Hours before President Donald Trump’s revised ban on issuing visas to travelers from six majority-Muslim countries was set to go into effect, a federal judge in Hawaii issued a temporary restraining order preventing the ban’s implementation nationwide. “Plaintiffs have met their burden of establishing a strong likelihood of success on the merits of their Establishment Clause claim,” Judge Derrick Watson wrote in his decision Wednesday, referring to the First Amendment’s requirement of the separation of church and state. Hawaii Attorney General Douglas Chin argued the ban discriminated on the basis of nationality, exceeded the president’s authority and was “motivated by anti-Muslim

animus.” He previously referred to the executive order as “Muslim Ban 2.0” Trump responded to the ruling during a rally in Nashville, Tennessee, Wednesday evening, vowing to take the case to the Supreme Court if necessary. “The order he blocked was a watered down version of the first order,” which “should have never been blocked to start with,” Trump told the crowd. Trump called the district judge in Hawaii “part of the much-overturned 9th Circuit Court,” drawing boos from the rally attendees. He added, “I have to be nice otherwise I’ll be criticized for speaking poorly of our courts,” before referring to the media as “dishonest” to the delight of the crowd. Trump said it was within

Praise for Police as Crime Drops in Desert Hot Springs By Kitty Alvarado Desert Hot Springs, CA -People who’ve lived in Desert Hot Springs for over a decade say they’ve noticed something. “I feel safer where I work and the outside on the streets, everything I’ve seen a big change,” says Farrah Aguiniga, who has lived in Desert Hot Springs for over 10 years, adding that now she feels safe letting her children go outside and play, so they’re happier. “In the last two years we’ve noticed a big decrease in delinquency, before we used to hear a lot of shootings, including one here near our church but thank God we’ve heard none of that lately,” says Patricia Balderama, who has lived in Desert Hot Springs for over 18 years.

And it’s not their imagination, Desert Hot Springs Police Chief Dale Mondary says violent crime was down 18 percent in 2016 from the previous year, that includes murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. This drop is a big deal for the City of Desert Hot Springs. While many credit Mondary for the change, he credits others like his officers, “We got there by hard work, our guys are working hard out on patrol out on the streets,” adding that residents have a lot to do with the crime drop too, “and obviously a part of our success, a huge part of our success is our community that support us, that banned together that aren’t afraid to report crimes.” But Mondary admits it wasn’t always this way and

building trust takes time, “There was an attitude of, ‘well we’re not going to call because we know they won’t do anything,’ and I’m hoping that we’ve turned that around and we are getting our community much more involved.” Residents like Aguiniga are grateful for their efforts, she says people must do their part too, “Thank you for your hard work ... we also need to help and help the community so we can grow together and be stronger.” Mondary says in an effort to get the community more involved they will be bringing back neighborhood watch groups and their first meeting is Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Miracle Springs if you attend you can expect free making Desert Hot Springs a Resort 10625 Palm Dr, Desert breakfast great conversation safer place to live. By KMIR News Staff Palm Springs, CA -Arraignment in the case of John Wessman has been postponed to May 19th at 1:30 PM. All three men accused in the Palm Springs bribery scandal will be in court that day. Prosecutors asked the judge for Wessman to turn in his passport, to which the judge agreed. Wessman must surrender his passport by 4:30 PM today. John Elroy Wessman, 79, was charged last month with nine counts of bribery of a public official and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony, stemming from a nearly 18-month-long investigation conducted by

the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI. Wessman’s former partner, 51-year-old Hugh Meaney, is facing the same charges, while Pougnet, 53, is charged with 21 felony counts, including corruption by a public official and perjury. The defendants are each free on $25,000 bail. Meaney and Pougnet are scheduled to be arraigned separately next month. District Attorney Mike Hestrin provided a snapshot of the case against the men during a news briefing on Feb. 16, describing the investigation as ``exhaustive’’ and resulting in the discovery of money trails going back to September

By Kitty Alvarado Indio, CA -It’s been three years since 41-year-old Jill Thomas Grant was murdered but the trial of her accused killer, then live-in boyfriend 46-year-old Michael John Franco finally got underway. Michael Thomas, Grant’s brother says waiting for this day has been tough, “Gave us hope only to find out that no it was indeed going to being continued again and again and again so that process has been very frustrating.” Thomas arrived in court backed by many friends who stayed through the testimony. Thomas was not allowed in court, something he contested. But in the end he was told he would not be allowed because he would be called to testify. (Cameras were also not allowed inside the courtroom. We spoke with Thomas before he entered the building and he made it clear he could not speak about the case as he would be testifying, we respected this request and

did not approach him after he testified. The following was written from notes taken in court and the quotes are from the interview with Thomas before we both entered the Larson Justice Center.) In opening statements the prosecution told jurors Franco murdered the Palm Desert High School teacher two days before Christmas by cutting her throat with a box cutter, and then plowed her over with her own car. Golf course employees who heard her desperate screams and discovered her body tangled in a bush took the stand. Aurelio Elizalde, a mechanic at the Terra Lago golf course in Indio, the community where Grant and Franco lived, said just before 5:00 in the morning, while doing his rounds, he got to hole 7 and saw tire marks on the grass, because he thought he saw a broken sprinkler near the tire marks he went to take a closer look, Elizalde said what

he confused for a sprinkler was a black sandal and when he shined his flashlight on a bush he saw a tan blouse and a body dripping blood in the bush. He said he then shined a light at a couple of Indio Police patrol cars, one stopped. Then Thomas testified. For the first time, he was shown a crime scene picture, a close up of his sister’s face, it was swollen, bloodied and bruised. Friends in the courtroom caught a glimpse and gasped. When he was asked if he recognized the picture, Thomas answered, “Barely.” Thomas stayed strong, “Emotionally I’m just here for my sister, and so that gives me the strength I need to to be able to sit up there and do what I need to do,” he said. Thomas said the evening of the murder his sister was throwing a holiday party at her home and friends who were stopped at the guard gate entrance to her community called him asking if he knew

the whereabouts of the couple. He says he called Franco, who called him back after a few calls saying the party was canceled because he and Grant had a “big blowout” and she left on foot. Thomas says he was suspicious because it was cold and out of character for Grant to cancel an event without alerting her guests. The defense told jurors during opening statements several times the case was about “drugs, sex and passion”. The defense attorney said Franco had a long history of drug addiction and the night of the murder he was “high as a kite” on methamphetamine and that he doesn’t remember any of that night because he was on a drug fueled psychosis. Franco pleaded not guilty on all charges but his attorney asked jurors to only convict Franco on manslaughter charges, not torture, gun charges or kidnapping. Franco is charged with murder, torture and committing the

and kidnapping, he also faces charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a loaded gun. If convicted Franco faces life in prison without parole. Both the defense and prosecution described a phone call Franco made by accident from his cell phone to a friend. The defense says in the call Franco wants to get Grant help but the prosecution says Grant is heard asking Franco to let her leave and she would say she was attacked. Thomas says regardless of the outcome he says some in his family will never see justice, “My father died during this period of time my mother was checked into the hospital yesterday morning ... parents may very well not see justice for my sister because of these delays, so certainly justice was denied to my parents.” Thomas noted that it was fitting the trial started on PI Day, as Grant was a math teacher. But, our esteemed playwright had no intention of making this a “Sunday in the Park With George,” but more a Sunday in the park with an unhinged man meeting a seemingly “hinged,” gentle man who is content with the life he is living. But no. that is not what happens. It’s about here that Albee takes a dramatic fork in the road and quite unexpectedly Jerry turns very dark and begins to argue with Peter. Jerry makes fun of Peter’s dreary life and before long, hits him on the arm demanding that he move away from him on the bench. Taken aback, Peter keeps moving until he reaches the edge of the bench saying, “I can’t move any further.” It’s under these circumstances, when Peter is being bullied into giving up his favorite bench, that the base, smothered violent tendencies lurking beneath the surface, rears its ugly head. He yells back saying he’s not going to give up his bench at which point Jerry produces a knife and a violent struggle ensues. So, in a flash, Peter goes from a mild-mannered, rich publishing executive, to a man in a life and death fight, which he could have avoided by, yes, simply giving up the bench and going home to his comfy life. Albee makes a point that under the right circumstances, a controlled, normal exterior could mask a violent streak waiting to be unleashed especially when it involves a territorial imperative. What struck me in particular, is Albee’s use of the dog, who survived being poisoned, as a metaphor for how we engage with each other in life. We love. We hate. We destroy. We repent. We are redeemed. There’s a lot to ponder but heck, that’s what makes for a great evening of theatre and, despite the weakness of “Homelife,” “The Zoo Story” is just the play to stimulate your imagination and perhaps question what’s around you.

Theatre’s production of “Spring Awakening,” which garnered beautiful reviews that resulted in a Broadway production. Act Two is “The Zoo Story” and the acting, to a lesser extent, almost matches the energy and excitement of “Spring Awakening.” I suspect part of that is because all four actors are on stage at the same time so that we can see the part being played simultaneously by both the signing and hearing actors. The action takes place on a park bench in New York’s Central Park recreated through a splendid fall setting by Karyl Newman, which makes up for the most uninteresting set in Act 1, which in no way suggests the upper middle class lifestyle of Ann and Peter. Following the confrontational nature of the conversation with Ann in Act One, Peter goes off to the park to sit on his favorite (L-R) Peter (Troy Kotsur ) listens as Jerry (Russell Harvard) talks about his pathetic life. bench. I wanted to see Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic play. These two are idols for many tennis fans. Nadal played a young upand-coming tennis star with a big serve. He did his best but Nadal won in two sets. Fans cheered, Rafa, Rafa, many times during play. Djokovic won also in two sets, but it took the last set into overtime for him to claim the win. Delightful Eugene O’neill Comedy at a Noise Within Theatre By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Eugene O’Neill, America’s only Nobel Laureate in Literature (1936) is a giant of the American theatre. He’s arguably one of the four greatest American dramatists of the 20th century, along with Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Edward Albee. O’ Neill, is best known as a highly-regarded dramatist who explored the dark and rougher side of the American experience, as a way of expiating the “sins” of his troubled family history. O’Neill, a prolific writer and dramatist, only wrote one comedy play - “Ah, Wilderness” - over his storied career. “Ah, Wilderness”, O’Neill’s paean to the youth he never experienced, is a sweet, nostalgic, coming of age comedy that had the good fortune to land in the capable and caring hands of director Steven Robman, and a cast of exceptional performers. It’s a fitting production to stage for the highly acclaimed A Noise Within theatre company, now celebrating their 25th anniversary season. The theatre, co-founded by Geoff Elliott and Julia Rodriguez-Elliott have earned their reputation over the last twenty-four years, as a classical repertory company, dedicated to staging the great works of theatre. The story centers round the middle-class Miller’s, their extended family members and their children, that takes

place in a small town on the Connecticut shore at the turnof-the 20th century. Most of the action in the play occurs in the house of Nat and Essie Miller, winningly played by Nicholas Hormann and Deborah Strang, respectively) Nat owns the local newspaper, and his oldest son Richard (Matt Gall in a terrific performance), a budding 17 year-old poet and writer (the alter-ego of O’Neill) is in love with Muriel McComber, (a lovely Emily Goss), the daughter of Nat’s largest advertiser. Muriel’s ultra conservative father David (nicely and stuffily played by (Marcelo Turbet), is outraged when he learns that Richard has been discussing the ‘scandalous’ books of George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, and the 12th century poet Omar Khayyam with Muriel. As a result, the young people are forbidden to see each other. Yes, yes, it was definitely a different society one hundred years ago. When Richard mistakenly thinks, Muriel has agreed to end their relationship, he goes to a local tavern and gets drunk for the first time, causing an uproar when he gets home. The next day he learns that Muriel still cares for him and they meet in secret that night at a deserted local beach, where they finally profess their youthful devotion to each other. Life in America back at the turn of the 20th century was, to co-opt the words of our forty-first President George

Ensemble of Ah, Wilderness!. Photo by Craig Schwartz. Herbert Walker Bush, a ‘kinder and gentler America’. Large and connected families like the Miller’s in the play include three sons: Richard, Arthur (Ian Littleworth) and Samuel Genghis Christian, and one daughter Mildred (Katie Hume), an Uncle Sid, Essie’s brother (wonderfully portrayed by Allen Blumenfeld), and Nat’s sister Lilly Miller (Kitty Swink), the love interest of Uncle Sid for sixteen years; with no marriage plans in sight due to Sid’s drinking problems. The idea of a loving, caring, family unit was the bedrock of American society, and one that O’Neill missed desperately. The audience on opening night, was probably 60 % over 50 and 40% under, with both age groups lapping up the performances and ‘getting’ the play’s nuances

through the lenses of people who lived over a hundred years ago. Young people, today are the audiences of the future and this audience appeared to appreciate what came before them. Both age groups aren’t quite ready to toss the ‘nostalgia baby’ out with the bathwater, if the responses to “Ah, Wilderness”, I heard on opening night are any indication. Great stories and great theatre will always have a place in the memories of theatre-goers, and the need to revisit them from time to time is crucial. In the technical department, director Robman leads the creative team of Scenic Designer Frederica Nascimento, Lighting Designer Tom Ontiveros, whose lighting allows the audience to see and appreciate the costumes

of Designer Garry D. Lennon, and that wonderful turn-of-the century look. The redoubtable Cricket S. Myers provides the sound, and Danielle Richter designs the Hair, Wigs and Makeup. “Ah, Wilderness”, also is blessed with cast that sings three and four-part harmony under the musical direction of Jonathan Tessero. Radio was a couple of decades in the future, so and the source of family entertainment then was a piano, and family members who gathered around it and sang and played musical instruments. Almost an unthinkable way to entertain families today. “Ah, Wilderness” is a splendid and charming evening of theatre that performs at A Noise Within theatre in Pasadena, and runs through May 20, 2017. Don’t’ miss it!
