“First Responders” Concerns Grow Over Coronavirus Impact on Front-Line Workers By Desert Star Staff MILWAUKEE - While the public shields itself from the new coronavirus, many front-line workers don’t have the luxury of taking isolation measures. These workers
in Wisconsin are asking the federal government to provide more assistance. The front-line workers include the service industry as well as health care. Connie Smith is vice president of
the Wisconsin Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, and also works at a Milwaukee hospital. She says not only are there concerns about staff members who provide care, but others
who work at these facilities, such as housekeeping. “They’re nervous going in there to clean the rooms for these patients,” says Smith. “There’s a lack of support or education for people

A Vision of London at The Marylebone Hotel
At a chic rooftop suite at London’s Marylebone Hotel, a private terrace is de rigueur. Credit: Marylebone Hotel By Anthony Grant In the early 1980s, when everything cool in pop music was coming out of Britain (again), I like many a Yankee had a vision of London as a hotbed of New Romantics and general gorgeousness. This was the era of Duran Duran and Lady Di, and An American Werewolf in London and a prevailing sentiment was that the apotheosis of glamour was really nowhere to be found stateside, but rather was firmly anchored to the banks of the River Thames. That was the London of my dreams, anyway,
so whenever the fates decide to throw me at the British capital for a spell, I am subconsciously seeking to recapture some of that old perceived notion of swish Britannia and of course rarely finding it. At The Marylebone, a Doyle Collection hotel, I found it. And I found it on foot, having zipped into London’s Paddington Station on the Heathrow Express and then hoofing it along George Street. At a point, crossing elegant Bryanston Square, I glanced down Great Cumberland Place and spotted the Marble Arch,
at the edge of Hyde Park. Next up Marylebone, an old guard West End neighborhood (in the City of Westminster) that is nonetheless teeming with activity. In the mid-17th century, this was a village next to London with a roughand-tumble reputation, but you’d never guess it now: it’s a London of unapologetic elegance and dare I say it, glamour. It’s something you sense as you navigate the streets around Marylebone, with their posh pubs and highend boutiques, culminating in Marylebone High Street and
this chic hotel, which is after all only a five-minute walk from the department stores and boutiques of Oxford Street, Bond Street, and Mayfair. The stylish tone is set by the hotel’s chic lobby and Cocktail Bar, characterized by its series of inviting nooks and crannies and playful, elegant terrace. Then there is 108 Brasserie, set on the cobbles of Marylebone Lane and marked out by its striking awnings and red brick frontage—its outside tables, greenery, and elegant lantern lighting recalling a Parisian café. Inside, the curved 108 Bar, with its redstudded seating, provides a lively forum for locals and guests alike, while the raised dining area is an elegant yet relaxed environment for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. For the healthconscious, guests enjoy exclusive access to Third Space at The Marylebone, which features a gym, wellness area, spa treatments, and an 18-meter swimming pool. Many of the luxurious guest rooms feature gracious nods to 1920s chic. Then there are the statement suites – including the acclaimed rooftop terrace suites that rival any in London
for the wow factor, and one of which (I’m told) once welcomed Kendall Jenner and “friend.” But then isn’t gossip one of the critical ingredients of metropolitan glam? I certainly think so, and I think back to my jolly good breakfast at the 108, with my toasted banana bread with ricotta and caramelized pecans, my heritage scrambled eggs and healthy fruity smoothie. For it wasn’t just the food that was delicious, it was also the atmosphere. Sure, the requisite upscale American tourists were clinging to their “International New York Times,” which for me will only ever be a pale shadow of the old Trib, and there was jetlagged me, but there were also locals on the go tucking into their breakfasts before taking on London; swarthy businessmen of exotic provenance (Oman? Morocco?) doing the same; waiters with the kind of faultless timing that you would expect to find in such a suitably sumptuous Londonian lair as this. And there were the lovely dinner and gin cocktails the night before, too—but that’s another story. For more information, visit https:// www.doylecollection.com/ hotels/the-marylebone-hotel
Not Our First Goat Rodeo
By Desert Star Staff Sony Music Masterworks announces the long-awaited follow-up to the GRAMMY Award-winning The Goat Rodeo Sessions, with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, and Chris Thile. The new album — Not Our First Goat Rodeo — will be released on May 1 and is available now to preorder. Making its debut alongside the album preorder is its lead offering, “Scarcely Cricket,” which the group pairs with a live performance video. Following the album’s May release, the group will set out on a coast-to-coast U.S. tour beginning in August, followed by a second set of performances in October. Both sets of Goat Rodeo sessions combine the talents of the four solo artists, each a Grammy Award-winning talent in his own right, to create a singular sound that’s part composed, part improvised, and uniquely American. The music is so complex to pull off that the group likens it to a goat rodeo — an aviation term for a situation in which 100 things need to go right to avoid disaster. Both the first album and the new recording also feature the voice and artistry of singer-songwriter and fellow Grammy Awardwinner Aoife O’Donovan, who rejoins the group as a guest on Not Our First Goat Rodeo. on 2011’s genre-defying The Goat Rodeo Sessions, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Classical, Classical Crossover, and Bluegrass charts and remained at No. 1 for 11 weeks on the Bluegrass chart. Marking Yo-Yo Ma’s highest debut on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart, the release went on to break into the chart’s top 20 albums, where it peaked at No. 18. NPR’s World Cafe called the album, which received GRAMMY Awards for Best Folk Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, “organic yet composed in a way that only four deeply talented, in-tune musicians could make it,” with traces of, “Appalachia[n], Chinese, classical, Celtic, and jazz influences. If there was ever an album — or an unlikely band — that embodies the word ‘eclectic,’ this is it.” The Los Angeles Times has described the collaboration as “unlikely musicians on unlikely instruments … part blues, part bluegrass, and a smidgen of Bach.” The four musicians come from diverse backgrounds: YoYo Ma (cello), a classical cellist known for his crossgenre collaborations and a deep belief in culture’s essential role in society; Stuart Duncan(fiddle, banjo), a multi-instrument bluegrass virtuoso who has played with
artists from Dolly Parton to George Strait; Edgar Meyer (bass), a double bassist and composer who has written for musicians from Béla Fleck and Zakir Hussain to Emanuel Ax and Hilary Hahn; and Chris Thile (mandolin, fiddle, guitar, vocals), the mandolinist wunderkind who fronts bands such as Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers and hosts public radio’s Live from Here. Their traditions and experiences intersect in this collaboration to create a compelling sound that is at once global and American, a shared voice that speaks to the moment in which we live.

Be Prepared for Scammers
By Janice Gough Everyone is vulnerable to financial abuse and exploitation; however, seniors are the most highly susceptible because the desire for companionship is an enticing allure for them. Scammers will be more active during this period of Corona Virus, as many people are already in a fearful mode due to the virus and are staying at home. feel “fear” that something will go haywire unless you take immediate action. Or they may inform you that you have won a lottery or something of great value, and they only need you to secure it by you paying for something. If they want you to put money on a GREEN card (immediate cash to them), don’t do it. We all know someone, even sometimes a family member or a caretaker who will steal from you. By leaning on your sympathy for their bad luck, they will scam you. Most types of financial abuse or fraud are started by a phone call or the internet. Everyone is vulnerable to financial abuse and exploitation; however, seniors are highly susceptible due to their desire for companionship, especially if you are single. Men may be victims of the “mail order bride scam,” and women may be exploited by a man that tells them they want a relationship with them. They all have similar warning signals, such as a very attractive photo, posing as a Professional, out of the country for important work, being overly complimentary…then the emergency happens, and
they will try to clean you out. It is essential to be proactive by having a plan in place to deal with scammers The following are actions one should take to avoid the scammers. 1. Check the I.R.S. or the Federal Trade Commission’s list of scams. The most important thing is to identify Scams quickly. If something sounds too good to be true or remotely strange, do not take any action. 2. Use Your Financial Planner as ‘the Bad Guy’ Get in the habit of saying, “I run everything by my financial planner; I’ll get back to you” before making any financial commitments “ or “My trustee controls all payments.” Have a good excuse ready. 3. Establish a trusted team of professionals and designees; team members should include your attorney, financial planner, C.P.A., and loved ones who will always have your best interests in mind. They should know one another, be formally authorized to communicate with each other, and should all have copies of any relevant legal documents. Set up protections by establishing
checks and balances 4. Never give personal or financial information to an unsolicited caller or someone you met on the internet. 5. Create a Revocable Living Trust and assign a co-trustee. 6. Review beneficiary designations, successor trustee, and financial and medical power of attorney regularly. 7. Establish powers of attorney and health care proxies. 8. Ensure that all checks — or checks over a certain dollar amount require two signatures. 9. Discuss the tough
planning issues headon and proactively, 10. Put your financial plan in place before you reach the point of having signs of diminished capacity. Review it regularly with your professional planner or attorney to ensure estate planning documents are in place and current. Janice Gough is a Financial advisor in Palm Springs. Three Misused Terms in the HOA World
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL As a lawyer, I plead “guilty” to being persnickety (to use a Latin term) regarding the correct use of legal terms. In the world of common interest developments there are several commonly used terms which are inaccurate and create misunderstanding. Here are four of the “all-stars”. Homeowner Association. This very common term does not appear within the Davis Stirling Common Interest Development Act! The Act refers to “common interest developments” (CIDs). Calling them “homeowners associations” excludes the many “mixed-use” projects including business or “live-work” units along with residential units. The term “homeowners association” can be found only in two places in the entire Civil Code - in Section 714, regarding installation of solar systems, and at Section 2924b(f)(1), regarding a CID’s request for notification of a foreclosure sale. [This column is often called “HOA Homefront” because if I used the legally correct term, “CID,” nobody would know what it was!] Planned UNIT development. The term “P.U.D.” is so widely used, I despair of ever stamping out the term, which exists in some other states but not in California. The Davis-Stirling Act identifies four varieties of CID, one of which
is the “planned development,” and nowhere does the Act insert the word “unit” in the middle. A “unit” is the separate interest a condominium owner owns. The owned interest of planned developments is called a “lot”. Amazingly, even though the term isn’t recognized as a type of CID in California, there are two different Civil Code laws using the term -- the sections regulating “shared appreciation” loans (Civil Sections 1917.0301917.334) and the “Mobile Home Residency Law” regarding mobile home parks (Civil Sections 798-798.14). Townhome/Townhouse. The term “townhouse” is often used to describe residences in which neighbors live side to side but not over one another. Many CID associations even include “Townhouse” or “Townhomes” in their name. However, the term “townhome” and “townhouse” cannot be found anywhere in the Civil Code because it is not a real estate legal term but is March 18, 2020
only a visually descriptive label. A townhouse-style residence could be a condominium, stock cooperative, community apartment, or planned development. It could also be none of those, and simply a building with some other less formal type of shared ownership. The appearance or configuration of the building has nothing to do with the legal interests owned. Legal ownership is defined by the documents establishing title, such as the legal description of the property and other recorded documents creating the separate ownership interests. Rules. Many associations have long-standing policies or practices which they call “rules,” but which are not in fact “rules” under the law. According to the DavisStirling Act, operating rules are adopted by the board using a specific process. Are the rules published? Are they written and distributed to all owners along
with the CC&Rs and bylaws? Otherwise, they may not be rules, but only the association’s practices or customs. If the rule was adopted in recent years, was the proposed rule change disseminated to the members at least 28 days before the board meeting at which the rule change was adopted? If not, it may not be a “rule” recognized by law. Use the correct terminology and help to reduce confusion. Words convey concepts and wrong words convey misunderstanding. Kelly G. Schools Mobilize To Fight Hunger During Shutdown
By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio schools will begin their coronavirus shutdown later today, and local and state agencies and organizations are mobilizing quickly to ensure children in need don’t go hungry. There are hundreds of thousands of K-12 students who rely on free or reducedprice meals at school, and the USDA approved the Ohio Department of Education’s waiver to serve meals in non-congregate settings and at school sites during the closures. Joree Novotny, director of external affairs at the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, encouraged patience as districts develop meal-distribution plans. “We all are working on this from the school level to the government level to the philanthropic and charitable level as well as local businesses who are chipping in,” Novotny said. “We understand your concern and your fear. Trust that your schools are going to communicate with you as soon
as they have the information they need to do so.” Child nutrition programs in Ohio serve more than 1 million meals daily at more than 3,000 sites. Gov. Mike DeWine announced the school closures through April 3, but noted the shutdown could extend much longer. Novotny said schools only are allowed to provide meals to students, so hunger-relief groups are trying to keep pantry shelves stocked to ensure food is on the table for everyone in households experiencing food insecurity. “Low-income families may have parents who are now losing wages because they need to stay at home with their children who are out of school, have been quarantined because of illness, have had their hours cut or even been laid off because of the economic issues associated with this public-health crisis,” she said. “This is a larger food insecurity issue.” Hunger-relief organizations largely rely on older adult volunteers, who currently are

Experts: CA Risks Major Census Undercount of Children 0-5 By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES - The 2020 census forms can be filled out online starting on Monday and experts are warning that California is at serious risk of an undercount, particularly of children under age five. In the 2010 census, it’s estimated that California missed counting one million children. Jessica Berthold, communications director with the First Five Association of California, says the state could lose out on a huge amount of federal money if families ignore their census forms. “Estimates are that if we had an undercount in 2020,” says Berthold, “it could cost

It should then only take ten minutes to fill out the form, which can be done by phone or online at ‘2020census.gov.’ Deborah Stein, network director with the Partnership for America’s Children, says children from immigrant families are the hardest to count, because their parents might be afraid to interact with the federal government. “In this political environment, the likelihood that
immigrant families will not count their young children is much greater,” says Stein. “And we’re very concerned about that.” By law, however, the Census Bureau cannot share anyone’s identifying information with Immigration and Customs Enforcement or any other government agency. How Dental Technology Helps Athletes Get Back In The Game
By Desert Star Staff Playing a physicallydemanding sport can exact a steep toll on athletes. It may even cost them their teeth. The National Youth Sports Safety Foundation estimates that, on average, 3 million teeth are knocked out every year during organized sporting events. While dentists advise athletes to wear mouthguards in most sports, the data indicates many do not. High-contact athletic competitions such as ice hockey, football, basketball, lacrosse, mixed martial
arts and extreme sports (skateboarding, snowboarding, mountain biking) see athletes pay the price with their pearly whites, leading to costly trips to the dentist. Dental implants, bridges or dentures are options for replacing missing teeth after a sports injury. Another alternative is Utratooth, the only FDA-cleared immediateload dental device, which can replace a missing tooth in just a one-hour appointment. Whichever option an athlete chooses to fill the missing gap in their mouth,
advancements in dentistry can make an athlete’s return to competition and oral health a smoother process. “Injuries are a part of sports and injuries in and around the mouth are very common,” says Dr. Sargon Lazarof (www.sargondental. com), the creator of Ultratooth and a cosmetic dentist in the Los Angeles area. “The first question to be addressed is, what is the correct immediate and definitive treatment? Oral-facial injuries, those involving trauma to the mouth and face, can have significant adverse functional, esthetic, and psychological effects on athletes. “Only fairly recently has greater attention focused on this critical but often overlooked segment of sports-related injuries. Oral-facial injuries can be debilitating and costly, so it’s important to consult with a dentist for the best option given the type of injury.” Dr. Lazarof explains how tooth-replacement technology benefits athletes in the short- and long-term: Puts them back in the game quickly. According to the American Dental Association, anywhere from 13 to 39 percent of all dental injuries are sports-related. Athletes want to compete and miss as
little game time as possible due to injuries. Professional hockey players, for example, have been known to lose a tooth or several teeth in a single game and be back on the ice the same week. The National Hockey League has team dentists with each team. “Dentistry is one of the defining characteristics of the NHL and their players,” Dr. Lazarof says. “It’s vital to a player’s and a team’s success. Losing teeth is a badge of honor for many players, and it happens all the time.” Restores their appearance and confidence. Many professional athletes endorse products and have an image to uphold, and this often includes their availability to the media for interviews and press conferences. “A missing tooth can hinder one’s speech, make the athlete self-conscious about their appearance and affect their self-confidence,” Dr. Lazarof says. “Those feelings can be even more pronounced in a younger athlete. Getting teeth replaced is as important to selfimage outside of the arena as it is in terms of competition.” It provides teeth stability and functionality. A person’s ability to chew is hampered because of a missing tooth. “This is especially troublesome
if the tooth in question is an incisor or a molar,” Dr. Lazarof says. “But most importantly, a lost tooth can cause the surrounding jawbone to deteriorate over time, causing further tooth loss. And the nearby tooth also shifts toward the gap, causing crooked teeth that may be harder to brush and floss.” “Unfortunately, there aren’t many great options to replace a lost tooth for athletes since most available techniques take time and are not permanent solutions,” Dr. Lazarof says. “This is why many athletes wait until retirement to replace their missing teeth. “Dental implants no longer are the state-of-theart in tooth replacement since it takes several visits and multiple surgeries with added costs in time and money. Ultratooth is the only FDA- cleared immediate tooth replacement technology that allows the patient to walk out with a fully functioning tooth or teeth in a single visit.” Dr. Sargon Lazarof (www.sargondental.com) is a cosmetic dentist and the founder of the Sargon Dental & Implant Institute in Encino, Calif., where doctors come and train in basic and advanced implantology.
‘Will CNN call him xenophobic now?’
Biden says Covid-19 is like ‘attack from abroad’ after Trump pilloried for ‘foreign virus.’ By Desert Star Staff Joe Biden has raised quite a few eyebrows after he compared the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. with “being attacked from abroad,” prompting many to wonder if he is to be held to the same standard by liberal media as Donald Trump. The first one-on-one debate between former VP Joe Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders was largely overshadowed by the coronavirus crisis raging in the U.S.U.S., with both Democratic candidates unloading heavily on U.S.U.S. President Donald Trump for his handling of the pandemic within the country’s shores. While the two have clashed over Sander’s Medicare for All proposal, Biden took a conciliatory tone at the Vermont independent, saying that he “agrees with Bernie” in principle on how to deal with the health scare. “I agree with Bernie. We’re in a situation where we have to now be providing for the hospitals that are going to be needed. We need it now.” Biden, however, then made a comparison that struck many as odd, essentially likening the outbreak of the Covid-19, that originated in China’s Wuhan in www.desertstarweekly.com
December, to a hostile invasion. “This is like we’re being attacked from abroad. This is like a war.” Netizens were quick to pounce on Biden, who previously took aim at Trump for describing the disease as a “foreign virus.” Biden: “this is a crisis. It’s like we are being attacked from abroad.”Really? Is that the only way to describe the pandemic? It seems the issue is not the virus, it’s preparedness & ability to respond and manage. — Azad Essa “we’re at war with a virus... this is like being attacked from abroad” Biden, no — Alex Press Biden: This is like we have been attacked from abroad, this is like a war —ope “Labeling Covid-19, a ‘foreign virus’ does not displace accountability for the misjudgments that have been taken, thus far, by the Trump administration,” Biden said as recently as on Thursday. “Will CNN call him xenophobic like they did Trump when he called it a “foreign virus”?” a commenter asked. The number of coronavirus cases in the U.S.U.S. has passed over 3,300, with at least 63 deaths. With the number of those infected keeping on soaring, Democrats have been accusing Trump of mishandling the crisis, seeking to weaponize the national emergency. Shortly after the SandersBiden showdown kicked off, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) unveiled new guidelines, urging against holding mass
events with 50 people or more. Parades, sporting events, festivals, concerts, conferences, and even weddings fall under the ban, which will be in effect for the next 8 weeks at least. The set-up for the debate itself looked somewhat eerily – the venue was moved from Arizona to CNN’s Washington headquarters, and there was no live audience to witness the back-and-forth between the two. Sanders and Biden greeted each other with elbow bumps, and proceeded to their podiums, set 6 feet apart in line with the “social distancing” guidelines.

5 Tips for 1st Foods for Babies
By Desert Star Staff Ask any parent what he or she remembers most about a child’s first year and you’re likely to hear quite a bit about sleep schedules. However, a baby’s eating schedule is just as important as his or her sleep. While feeding a baby seems like it should be simple, for some new parents it can be nerve-wracking and lead to plenty of questions, such as: “Should I breastfeed or bottle feed?” “How much should my baby eat?” “When should I start baby food?” “What should my baby’s first foods be?” To help navigate firstyear feeding, consider these tips from the experts at KinderCare. Let babies eat as much as they need, when they need it. Be prepared to feed your baby soon after he or she shows signs of hunger, like rooting; sucking on

hands, toes, clothes or toys; or reaching for food. Let your baby tell you when he or she is full – like turning away, falling asleep or losing interest in eating. This helps your baby learn to eat when hungry and stop when full, even if it means not eating everything you offer. Choose a feeding style that meets you and your baby’s needs. Whether you breastfeed or use a bottle, the important thing is your baby is fed. If you breastfeed, it’s a good idea to express some milk now and again so your baby will take a bottle if someone else needs to feed him or her. Understand when it’s time to start baby food. While most babies are introduced to solid foods around 6 months of age, it depends on their individual development. Generally, if your baby can sit up on his or her own, has good neck
and head control and shows interest – like reaching for food during mealtimes – it may be appropriate to try solid food. Focus on exploration. It’s important to provide your baby with a variety of foods free from added sugars, sodium and artificial ingredients, and let him or her explore rather than focusing on how much is eaten. “Focus on introducing veggies, proteins, grains and fruit – in that order,” said Courtney Hines, KinderCare’s nutritionist. “Babies are naturally inclined to prefer sweet things so save fruit for last so your baby is more inclined to try other flavors.” Make the transition gradual and fun. Hines recommends gradually exposing babies to a wide variety of whole, unprocessed foods with varying flavors and textures, and talking with your baby about the taste, feel and

The British government has taken relatively modest steps to combat the spread of the disease in comparison to some other European

Downing Street has argued that drastic measures like shutting down schools or introducing harsher travel restrictions are preliminary and, if they come in effect now, would be less efficient because people would not observe them for long. The argument, however, drew massive pushback from the scientific community, with an open letter penned by over 200 scientists urging the government to “take stronger measures of social distancing” with “immediate effect.” So far, 1,372 confirmed coronavirus cases have been reported across the UK, and a death toll stands at 35. FL Legislature Approves Bill Creating New Aquatic Preserve
By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -On Wednesday, the Florida Legislature approved a bill that would provide protections to the largest seagrass bed in the Gulf of Mexico. House Bill 1061 by Republican Rep. Ralph Massullo of Lecanto passed overwhelmingly to create the first aquatic preserve in 32 years, including the coastlines of Citrus, Hernando and Pasco counties. The news comes with excitement for Capt. William Toney, a fourth-generation fishing guide in Citrus County. “This aquatic preserve will protect us and hopefully, sustain our way of living and keep our rivers safe clean and everything, from if there is any issues with pollution,” he states. “It’s being proactive, is what it is.” Seagrass helps stabilize the sea floor, filters
pollution and serves as habitat for fish species. Some local governments did express concern about added bureaucracy for the state protections, but the measure received unanimous support in the Senate and is now on the governor’s desk. According to The Pew Charitable Trusts, commercially fished seagrass-dependent species and eco-tourism in the region generate around $600 million a year for the local economy, and support more than 10,000 jobs. Holly Binns, Pew’s project director for the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. Caribbean, says the preserve is a winwin for both the environment and the economy. “It also supports traditional activities, ranging from fishing to scalloping, ecotours to view manatees,” she states. “This

Disney Plus -- for Health Care? By Sally C. Pipes Over 10 million people have signed up for Disney Plus since it launched last year. It’s easy to understand why. The service gives subscribers access to hundreds of movies and television shows for just $7 a month -- no cable plan required. Imagine if we applied that model to health care. For a flat monthly fee, subscribers could get everything from flu shots to lab tests “on demand” -- no expensive, cumbersome insurance plan required. This model already exists. It’s called direct primary care -- and Americans young and old, rich and poor alike are increasingly turning to it as a means of securing affordable, high-quality health care. Under direct primary
care, a patient pays a doctor a subscription-style fee in exchange for access to an array of services. Just a decade ago, there were only a handful of direct primary care practices scattered across the country. Today, over 1,000 serve around half a million people in 49 states. The model has flourished in part because many doctors no longer want to deal with insurance. Nearly 75 percent of physicians spend at least 10 hours each week on paperwork. Bureaucratic tasks are the largest contributor to physician burnout, which affects roughly half of all family medicine doctors. Burnout is serious. Physicians who experience it are more likely to make medical errors.

presidential election. Joplin council member Melodee Colbert Kean says with COVID-19 also top of mind, Centers for Disease Control experts updated city leaders about the pandemic. March 18, 2020
“They’ve been giving us information that we can take back to our cities to make sure that people aren’t put in a panic, that they’re getting relevant information and not relying on rumors,” says Kean. “Because this is not only affecting health, it’s affecting economics in all our communities.” Kean is a past president of the NLC, which she says helps form powerful partnerships between local officials and senators and members of Congress. This year’s 2020 Cities Agenda outlines four top priorities: building sustainable infrastructure, creating a skilled workforce, ending housing instability and homelessness, and reducing gun violence. Lindsey Constance is a city councilmember from Shawnee, Kansas - which is part of the Kansas City metro area. While COVID-19 is a global issue, she says local
leaders are on the front lines. She says the conference provided an opportunity to learn how other communities are responding. “It’s really been something that’s intertwined throughout when we are talking about communities that are more at risk,” says Constance. “And challenges with people who perhaps don’t have leave from work, maybe inadequate health-care services.” Kean says it will take the coordination of all levels of government to protect public health. “We have our local health department in touch with our governor, which is also in touch with federal,” says Kean. “The CDC has been doing calls to the health department and making sure that they have relevant, up to date information that they’re able to relay to the residents.” More than three dozen municipalities in Missouri are members of the NLC. www.desertstarweekly.com
CORONAVIRUS: JUST THE FACTS | DISEASE BASICS
What Is Coronavirus? Coronavirus (COVID19) is the disease caused by the new coronavirus that emerged in China in December 2019. It can be spread from person to person and is diagnosed with a laboratory test. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, diagnosis may be difficult with only a physical exam because mild cases of COVID-19 may appear similar to the flu or a bad cold. There is no coronavirus vaccine yet. Prevention involves frequent hand-washing, coughing into the bend of your elbow and staying home when you are sick. Here are a few frequently asked questions to help you better understand COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
WHY IS THE DISEASE CALLED CORONAVIRUS AND COVID-19?
On Feb. 11, 2020 the World Health Organization announced an official name for the disease. The name of this disease is coronavirus disease 2019, abbreviated as COVID-19. In COVID-19, ‘CO’ stands for ‘corona,’ ‘VI’ for ‘virus,’ and ‘D’ for disease. Formerly, this disease was
ALISSA ECKERT, MS, DAN HIGGINS, MAMS/CDC
referred to as “2019 novel coronavirus” or “2019-nCoV.”
HOW DOES THE VIRUS SPREAD?
This virus was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. The first infections were linked to a live animal market, according to the CDC, but the virus is now spreading from person to person. The virus that causes
COVID-19 seems to be spreading easily in the community and in some affected geographic areas. This means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they became infected.
China shows that some people are at higher risk of getting very sick from this illness, including older adults, according to the CDC. People who have serious chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes and lung disease also are at higher risk.
WHO IS AT THE HIGHEST RISK FOR CONTRACTING COVID-19?
IS THIS CORONAVIRUS DIFFERENT FROM SARS? SARS stands for severe
information out of| DISEASE acute respiratory CORONAVIRUS:Early JUST THE FACTS BASICS syndrome.
In 2003, an outbreak of SARS started in China and spread to other countries before ending in 2004. The virus that causes COVID-19 is similar to the one that caused the 2003 SARS outbreak: Both are types of coronaviruses. Much is still unknown, but the CDC reports that COVID-19 seems to spread faster than the 2003 SARS and also may cause less severe illness.
Symptoms and Testing The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to the flu or a severe cold. If you think you have been exposed to the virus through contact with someone else who has been affected, you should call your health care provider immediately for medical advice. Emergency warning signs and serious symptoms include: • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest. • New confusion or inability to arouse. • Bluish lips or face. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that this list is not all-inclusive and urges Americans to consult their medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning.
WHEN TESTING IS NECESSARY
If you are a close contact of someone with COVID-19 or you live in a community where there is ongoing spread of COVID-19 and develop symptoms of COVID-19, call your health care provider and tell them about your symptoms and your exposure. They will decide whether you need to be tested.

CDC
People who are mildly ill may be able to isolate and care for themselves at home. Your local medical professionals will be able to consider your case and deliver sound advice.
WHAT IF YOU’RE SICK?
The CDC makes the following recommendations to those feeling sick or afflicted with a mild case of COVID-19:
Stay home. People who are mildly ill with COVID-19 are able to isolate at home during their illness. You should restrict activities outside your home, except for getting medical care. Avoid public areas. Do not go to work, school or public areas. Avoid public transportation. Avoid using public transportation, ride-sharing or taxis.

CONTACTING YOUR DOCTORS
People at higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19 should contact their health care provider early, even if their illness is mild. This can help doctors make more informed decisions, like whether or not you should be hospitalized or if you should be tested for the virus. The CDC reports that older
adults and people who have severe underlying chronic medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19. If you are very sick, get medical attention immediately. If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19, get medical attention immediately.

Traveling During the Outbreak Travel has been banned in multiple countries affected by COVID-19. People throughout the United States have seen major delays in domestic travel, with airlines cutting back on the number of flights. If you still need to travel for work or family reasons, there are many things to consider before buying a plane ticket or loading up your car for a road trip.
BE SMART
One of the first things you should ask yourself is whether COVID-19 has been spreading where you’re going. If the answer is yes, you may be at higher risk of exposure if you travel there. Your risk of exposure to respiratory viruses like COVID-19 may increase in crowded settings, which is why all major leagues in professional sports have delayed or suspended their seasons. This is especially true for particularly closed-in settings with little air circulation if there are people in the crowd who are sick. Similarly, strong consideration should be given to avoiding travel if
COVID-19 is spreading where you live. You should avoid the risk of passing COVID-19 to others during travel, particularly if you will be in close contact with older adults or people with severe chronic health conditions.
WHAT’S YOUR RISK LEVEL?
Older adults and people of any age with serious chronic medical conditions, such as heart disease, lung disease or diabetes, are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19. The CDC recommends that travelers at higher risk for COVID-19 complications avoid all cruise travel and nonessential air travel. |
CORONAVIRUS: JUST THE FACTS
FAMILIES
WHAT IF YOU’RE EXPOSED?
If you have close contact with someone with COVID-19 during travel, you may be asked to stay home to self-monitor and avoid contact with others for up to 14 days after travel. If you become sick with COVID-19, you may be unable to go to work or school until you’re considered noninfectious. Consider these possible factors when traveling, as being exposed to the virus can have a big impact on your daily life or halt your professional capabilities. Depending on your unique circumstances, you should be open to delaying or canceling your plans.
Helping Children Cope It is very important to remember that children look to adults for how to react during stressful times. With the COVID-19 virus gaining international media attention, information about the pandemic is everywhere. If parents seem overwhelmed with the situation, children will naturally react in the same way. As parents, teachers and other adults in the lives of children, it’s up to us to reassure and educate them in the most honest, compassionate way possible.
TIPS ON INTERACTING WITH CHILDREN
Here are some tips on talking about COVID-19 with your children or students, according to the National Association of School Psychologists. • Remain calm and reassuring. • Make yourself available. • Avoid excessive blaming. • Be aware of their exposure to the news. • Maintain a normal routine, if possible. • Be honest and accurate.

COVID-19 can either increase or decrease your children’s anxiety levels related to the virus and the news they are hearing. Remind them that you and the adults at their school or daycare are there to keep them safe and healthy. Always let your children talk about their feelings in a safe way. This will help them get things into the open and allow for opportunities for you to educate them on
what’s going on.
MODEL BASIC HYGIENE
The NASP recommends you teaching children the following hygiene measures: • Wash hands multiple times a day for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star slowly). • Cover mouths with tissue when sneezing or coughing and throw away the tissue

immediately, or sneeze or cough into the bend of the elbow. • Do not share food or drinks. • Practice giving fist or elbow bumps instead of handshakes.
CARRY ON WITH NORMAL LIFE
Encourage your child to eat a balanced diet, get enough sleep and exercise regularly.
Not only will this give them comfort during disruptions, but it will help their immune system stay strong. Going along with this guidance, you should also take the time to talk with your children. Don’t go out of your way to avoid conversations related to COVID-19. If they have questions, be ready to give them educated answers and advice on dealing with any inquiries they may have.

CORONAVIRUS: JUST THE FACTS | MENTAL HEALTH
Manage Anxiety and Stress The outbreak of COVID-19 may be stressful for people and communities to handle, especially as new information continues to be released at seemingly breakneck speeds. This stress can be difficult for people to handle. Maybe you have an older adult in your life with pre-existing medical conditions that could make them more at risk to catch coronavirus. Maybe your workplace recently shut down due to bans on public crowds and you’re worried about where your next paycheck is coming from. We all handle stress differently, and there is not a one-sizefits-all solution to overcoming these emotionally challenging times. Fortunately, there are plenty of beset practices you can follow to make illness-induced stress easier to manage.
WHO IS STRESSED?
There are certain segments of the population who may be more susceptible to stress than others. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, here are some examples of our country’s most vulnerable pop-

Protective Measures Avoiding COVID-19 requires smart hygiene and consistent protective measures. There are many simple steps you can take to protect yourself, your family and friends. Follow the steps below to give yourself the best chance of preventing the onset of COVID-19. WASH YOUR HANDS
Clean hands can be the key to making it through the coronavirus pandemic as healthy as possible. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, experts recommend using a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol. When using sanitizer, cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

What Are WA Workers’ Paid Leave Options During Coronavirus? By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE -- Washington state’s sick leave policies are in the spotlight as the novel coronavirus wreaks havoc on workers and businesses. Marilyn Watkins, policy director for the Economic Opportunity Institute, says Washington has enacted some of the most far-reaching and progressive paid leave laws in the country. To start, workers can tap into paid sick leave through their employers and receive full pay. “Paid sick leave is available to be used if you yourself are sick, if one of your family members is sick,” Watkins points out. “It’s also available to use in public health emergencies when your child’s school is closed or your child’s daycare is closed.” Watkins notes many paid sick leave programs are short-term, lasting one or two weeks. For more extensive coverage, the state has a Paid Family and Medical Leave program that went up
at the beginning of the year. People may be eligible for this program if they or a family member are ill. It provides up to 12 weeks of leave with partial pay -- up to 90% for low-income workers. However, the program faces a backlog and it could take a while for people to get approval. Watkins says the Employment Security Department is speeding up the process, vowing to bring it down from 10 weeks to two by June, and people can collect benefits retroactively. She also notes the agency has options for people in dire situations. “People who are really facing catastrophic consequences from the lack of income, there is a[n] expedited process and there’s a link to that on the department’s website,” she stresses. Trump warns against HOARDING over coronavirus
By Desert Star Staff The White House has warned citizens against hoarding daily supplies in the wake of videos showing people fighting for products like toilet paper and hand sanitizer and panicbuying everyday essentials until shelves are empty. President Donald Trump on Sunday spoke with “more than two dozen” grocery store and supply chain executives and thanked them for their work as people flock to stores to stockpile on supplies over fears surrounding the spread of coronavirus. Delivering his daily update on the coronavirus situation, Trump suggested Americans “just take it easy, just relax,” adding that the empty shelves all over the country are the result of “people buying anywhere three to five times of what they would normally buy.” There is no need for anyone in the country to hoard essential food supplies. Just go and buy, enjoy it, have a nice dinner, relax, because there’s plenty of it Though the White House said Americans don’t have to hoard daily supplies, the president told the store executives that stocked shelves with needed items will help Americans feel “safe and calm.” Keeping shelves stocked and meeting the public’s demand has become an increasingly difficult task for supply chain stores, though. Major grocery stores like Kroger and Publix announced on Sunday that they are changing their store hours to better meet demand. “Publix will continue to

Videos from US stores amid the coronavirus outbreak show the effects panic buying is having on both consumers and workers. Online response: This is insanity — Marc Some videos show customers taking supplies like paper towels straight off of pallets before they are even stocked. people are scrambling out here like it’s the end of the world @SamsClub to get paper towel anyone else have a similar shopping experience? — Eric Quach Others show lines of people ready with their carts waiting outside before stores even open. INSANE! FOX5 viewer Katrina Maves shared this video of the lines to enter Costco in Henderson this morning as the store opened. Costco says sales at its stores are up as shoppers race to stock up on various items as the coronavirus spreads — FOX5 Las Vegas While the panic buying is in direct response to the coronavirus, it is in opposition to the ‘social distancing’ politicians have been promoting through Twitter. Putting yourself in a horde of people to get supplies likely increases your risk of being exposed to the virus, especially since grocery store employees are now coming into contact with more and more people. Sunset Blvd. Records). The album features the talented Austin, Texas spawned singerguitarist and former leader of Los Angeles’ Textones teaming up with 11 notable guests to share lead vocals on a followup to her 2013 disc “Have Harmony, Will Travel.” The track listing is uniformly strong with a celebrated and eclectic lineup of great singers artfully joining their voices with Olson’s own. The decidedly rootsy “Timber, I’m Falling In Love” (with Stephen McCarthy on vocals and guitar), the Byrds-flavored “Goodbye My Love” (featuring Herman’s Hermits lead singer Peter Noone) and “After the Storm” (with actress-singer Mare Winningham), and Americana nugget “Bossier City” (featuring I See Hawks In L.A.) are among
the world’s great and enduring horn sections. Led by founder and tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo, Tower of Power’s timeless sound is celebrated with power and zeal. “The Story of You and I” is a wonderful musical explosion featuring a driving rhythm section amidst horns, fiery lead guitar and soulful lead vocals. The soulful ballad “Who Would Have my favorites on the album. The album kicks off with the acoustic guitar-driven “I Love the Afternoon,” Midón’s soulful vocals balanced by some select harmonies that augment his voice; the track is further bolstered by a strong solo on his guitar. By Desert Star Staff NEW HAVEN, Conn. Many voters are supporting former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders - I-Vt. - because they think they are more “electable” against President Donald Trump - they are also white men. But according to a New Haven-based researcher, the electability of white male candidates may not be supported by data. Brenda Carter directs the Reflective Democracy Campaign, which analyzes
the demographics of power in the U.S. When they studied the 2018 midterm results, Carter didn’t expect big differences between white male candidates and women and candidates of color. “But when we looked at candidates up and down the ballots nationwide in 2018, we found that women of all races and men of color won their elections at the same rates as white men, and even slightly more,” says Carter. According to the Reflective Democracy Campaign’s report,
“The Electability Myth,” white male candidates performed slightly worse than women and candidates of color in the 2018 midterm elections. Carter thinks voters’ support of Biden and Sanders is partially due to how ingrained the white male electability myth is in American society. Still, Carter didn’t anticipate the results they saw from the 2018 elections. “The fact that actually white men are the least successful by a small margin when they run was surprising
going on right now with this discussion of electability.” In her survey, respondents thought that 47% of other Americans wouldn’t vote for a woman for president, and 42% wouldn’t vote for a black person for president. But Bateson says recent polls actually show those numbers as much lower: less than 10 percent of Americans say they wouldn’t vote for a black or female president. Bateson thinks this overestimation of bias, what she calls “strategic discrimination,” could have impacted Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s campaign, as well as the historically diverse field of candidates this year.
Discerning listeners with an ear for a variety of styles are in luck. A new duets project from singer-songwriter/ producer Carla Olson, an amazing return from soul masters Tower of Power and a genre-stretching effort from jazz great Raul Midón are worth adding to your music library.
White Men Lost Races More in 2018 Than Women, POC because it’s so completely contrary to the conventional wisdom,” says Carter. But according to new research, many Americans could be misjudging others’ level of bias. Political Science Professor Regina Bateson conducted several experiments about people’s perceptions of candidates based on gender and race in 2019 while she was at MIT - now, she’s at the University of Ottawa. In one survey, Bateson asked a nationally representative sample if they thought other Americans would vote for a woman or person of color. “People often overestimate others’ levels of bias,” says Bateson. “I think that’s very much what’s

Israel’s Netanyahu tests negative for coronavirus By Desert Star Staff Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on Sunday flaunted a negative result for his Covid-19 test, branded “manipulation” by his rival Benny Gantz. The stunt seemingly didn’t help, as Gantz was then tapped to form the government. The prime minister and those working close to him had been tested for the deadly virus as a “precaution,” while none of them displayed any symptoms of the disease. The coronavirus test was harshly criticized by Netanyahu’s political rival, the head of centrist Blue and White party Benny Gantz, who blamed the PM for staging a publicity stunt and “manipulating” the people. While
the incumbent PM has been pushing for an “emergency unity government” with Gantz, claiming it is needed to fight the outbreak, Gantz has been reluctant to accept Netanyahu’s advances. Late on Sunday, Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin’s office said that Gantz would be entrusted with forming the government, in a new attempt to end the country’s nearly year-long political deadlock. “Tomorrow, around midday, the president will assign the task of forming the government to head off [Blue and White party] Benny Gantz,” the statement said as quoted by Reuters. Netanyahu critics, including coronavirus scare as a pretext to court sessions in the country. Gantz, have accused the delay his corruption trial after his The trial, which was initially embattled PM of using the cabinet imposed a ban on most scheduled for March 17, has

Coronavirus: MD Closes Schools, Bans Large Gatherings By Desert Star Staff ANNAPOLIS, Md. Maryland officials have announced the state’s first case of community-transmitted new coronavirus. That has contributed to a series of large-scale actions to slow the spread of the virus. Some of the actions the state is mandating include closing all public schools from March 16 through the 27. And Gov. Larry Hogan is also requiring a temporary ban on public gatherings of more than 250 people. He urges residents

to take the coronavirus threat very seriously. “This situation is escalating rapidly,” says Hogan. “Information is changing not only on a daily basis, but on an hourly, almost minute-by-minute basis.” The state is also ordering all non-essential state employees to work from home, and is suspending visits to anyone in prison. The state’s first community-transmitted COVID-19 case is part of nearly a dozen infections of the new coronavirus in Maryland. Hogan says given the
magnitude of the actions the state is taking, people should get used to the fact that dayto-day life and activities just won’t be normal for a while. “All Marylanders need to understand and prepare that there may be significant disruption to your everyday lives for period a time,” says Hogan. Hogan says people also need to be clear that these actions - no matter how concerning or even frightening they may seem - are meant to save lives and protect the public. March 18, 2020
In addition to school closings and a ban on large gatherings, Maryland officials are closing the Port of Baltimore to passenger cruise ships in light of the new coronavirus. (Adobe Stock) www.desertstarweekly.com

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Bee Gees Vinyl Reissue Series To Be Released Worldwide By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, - On May 8, Capitol/UMe is set to release five remastered LPs from the storied catalog of the Bee Gees, one of music’s most legendary and acclaimed groups. Each LP has been pressed onto both black vinyl and limited-edition colored vinyl. The five LPs are, in chronological order, 1969’s Best Of Bee Gees (on black and berry vinyl), 1975’s Main Course (on black and whitewater vinyl), 1976’s Children Of The World (on black and sunshine yellow vinyl), 1977’s double live album Here At Last…Bee Gees…Live (2LPs on black and tangerine vinyl), and 1979’s Spirits Having Flown (on black and blood red vinyl). All five albums have been remastered from the original analog LP master tapes at the iconic Capitol Studios by Kevin Bartley and Ian Sefchick. The Bee Gees’ first greatest hits compilation, Best Of Bee Gees, was released in June 1969, and it features a prime selection of the early hit singles that established the group’s broad musical palette. The twelve gems comprising Best Ofare among the most popular songs of the then-burgeoning group’s canon, including the desperately pleading “I Gotta Get A Message To You,” Sir Barry’s classic balladry vocal on “Words,” the harmoniously soulful classic “To Love Somebody,” the pure pop perfection of “Massachusetts,” Robin’s signature vocal on “I Started A Joke,” and the skillful buildup of “Spicks and Specks,” the latter song being the Bee Gees’ first-ever No. 1 record in their homeland of Australia. June 1975’s Main Course, one of the most significant albums in the Bee Gees catalog, marked a new direction for
the group, and in turn created the model for their output throughout the rest of the 1970s by featuring a fresh, R&Bmeets-pop sound. Recorded in Miami, Florida, and produced by the legendary Arif Mardin, the album’s infectious No. 1 hit, “Jive Talkin’,” carries a rhythm inspired by the sound the group’s car made on the 163rd Street Causeway Bridge as they drove to and from the recording sessions being held at the fabled Criteria Studios. With Main Course, Mardin and the Gibb brothers continued to explore the use of synthesizers instead of strings in their arrangements. It’s also the first album where Barry Gibb’s hallmark falsetto is most prominent, showcasing the impressive depth of his vocal range. The album’s other hit singles include the dramatic “Nights On Broadway” and the always touching “Fanny (Be Tender With My Love).” The first single from the Bee Gees’ next album, September 1976’s Children Of The World, “You Should Be Dancing,” went to No. 1 in both the U.S. and Canada, and was also a Top 10 smash in numerous other territories. Children Of The World, which attained certified multi-platinum status in the U.S., was also recorded at Miami’s Criteria Studios, albeit this time produced by the Bee Gees, Karl Richardson, and Albhy Galuten. The album’s other key singles include the uplifting ballad “Love So Right,” the provocatively seductive “Boogie Child,” and the harmonyand-synth-driven title track. Released in May 1977, Here At Last…Bee Gees…Live, the group’s first live album, was recorded at The Forum in Los Angeles in December 1976.
The majority of this palpable 2LP set was made up of songs that had been big hit singles for the Bee Gees, along with tracks from their aforementioned recent hit albums, Main Course and Children Of The World. Highlighting the group’s magical harmonic vocal blend onstage, Here At Last contains definitive live versions of “You Should Be Dancing,” “Jive Talkin’,” “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart,” “I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You,” “New York Mining Disaster 1941,” “Run To Me,” and many more. Spirits Having Flown, the 15th Bee Gees album, was released in January 1979, and was the group’s first album following the massive success of 1977’s multi-platinum Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. The first three tracks released from Spirits Having Flown — “Tragedy,” “Too Much Heaven,” and “Love You Inside Out” — all shot to No. 1 in the U.S., giving the Bee Gees an unbroken run of six U.S. charttoppers in a one-year period. In addition, the Bee Gees donated the copyright of “Too Much Heaven” to Music For UNICEF, a charity they founded along with their longtime Manager Robert Stigwood and Sir David
Frost. Spirits was a No. 1 album for the Bee Gees in the U.K. and topped the charts around the world. The album was recorded at the group’s favored Criteria Studios in Miami, where Chicago was simultaneously recording their own hit album, October 1978’s Hot Streets. The two groups wound up collaborating on Chicago’s “Little Miss Loving,” while Chicago’s lauded horn section guested on select Spirits Having Flown tracks. The Bee Gees — brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb, one of the most successful songwriting teams of all time — have long earned their stature as one of the world’s most popular and bestselling groups ever. Having recorded 22 studio albums and for numerous soundtracks, including November 1977’s monumentally successful Saturday Night Fever, the Bee Gees infused popular culture with dozens of worldwide hit singles that featured their singular and highly influential three-part harmonies. They achieved nine Number Ones and 23 Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, including “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Night Fever,” and “Stayin’ Alive”
from Saturday Night Fever, in addition to hitting charts around the world with many other classics, including “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart,” “I Started A Joke,” “Lonely Days,” “Words,” and “You Win Again.” Among the honors bestowed upon the Bee Gees are eight GRAMMY Awards®, including The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Legend Award; five American Music Awards; a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music; and a Legend Award from the World Music Awards. The Bee Gees have also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, BMI Icons, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and the Dance Music Hall of Fame. All three brothers were honored with a CBE as Commanders of the British Empire in 2002, and Barry was knighted ‘Sir Barry Gibb’ in 2018. Families Urged to Follow Nursing-Home Visitation Curbs
By Desert Star Staff As health officials work to slow the spread of the new coronavirus, they’re asking that families avoid making any non-essential visits to loved ones being cared for in nursing homes. In conjunction with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Iowa Health Care Association says inperson visits are limited to situations where a patient is facing an end-of-life situation.
Association President Brent Willett says other forms of communication will have to be used for the time being. “We are advising that families change the way that they visit and communicate with their families,” says Willett, “using the means of technology that our members and providers across the state are beginning to push out and make available to families.” Willett says some providers are gathering additional television monitors
for video conferencing, and they’re being asked to free up more phone lines. Willett says they’re also asking providers to enhance efforts to stop a potential spread of the virus, should it
find its way inside any of the facilities across Iowa. “Things like even more frequent hand washing by staff members,” says Willett, “the use of personal protective equipment in
caring for individuals who may be showing any kind of respiratory symptoms.” In a scenario where a visit is allowed, Willett says there will be a special screening process at the point of entry.

Clean and Disinfect your Space The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends straightforward cleaning measures to reduce our chances of contracting COVID-19. Follow the simple tips below to ensure your home stays as safe and healthy as possible. CLEANING AND DISINFECTING
If surfaces are dirty, they should be cleaned using a detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection. For effective disinfection, use diluted household bleach solutions, alcohol solutions with at least 70 percent alcohol and common EPAregistered household disinfectants. Diluted household bleach solutions can be used if appropriate for the surface, but always follow manufacturer’s instructions for application and proper ventilation. The CDC states that unexpired household bleach will be effective against coronaviruses when properly diluted.

products being used and whether there is a risk of splash. Always remove your gloves and gowns carefully to avoid contamination of the wearer and the surrounding area. Wash your hands immediately after removing the gloves for extra protection.
DOING LAUNDRY
Performing laundry properly is an important aspect of keeping your family’s health in good shape. Wash items in
accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions using the warmest appropriate water setting for the items and then dry items completely. Do not shake dirty laundry, as doing so can increase the possibility of dispersing virus through the air. Dirty laundry that has been in contact with an ill person can be washed with other people’s items, according to the CDC. Be sure to clean and disinfect hampers or other carts used for transporting laundry.
