1.7 Million Dollars raised during the 75th Annual Palm Springs Art Museum Gala
By Pat Krause The Palm Springs Art Museum celebrated its 75th anniversary in a big way at the Palm Springs Convention Center on March 15th. White towers lined the driveway, and a big 75th banner crossed the road to the entrance to the Convention Center. Cars going to Valet drove on white and black carpets.
Guests entered the Centers lobby under a wall and ceiling of lights that were adorned with flowers. A memorable moment entering the Gala. The Gala was sold out again this year. This special 75th Palm Springs Art Museum Gala began with cocktails and appetizers, followed by Dinner, Entertainment and Dancing. The entertainment
for the evening was provided by Live It Up Productions. The many many talented singers and dancers displayed an artistically done production. A video was shown that detailed the many contributions made by the Art Museum. The Video showed the growth of the Museum and the impact it has made in the Valley. Chairman of
By Desert Star Staff Los Angeles, CA. – An oversize ping-pong ball volleyed around a badminton-size court with a tennis- size net: that’s how some describe pickleball, one of the fastest growing sports in the US according to Athletic Business magazine. Fast-paced, easy-to-learn and inexpensive to play, pickleball has gained enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels since it was invented in 1965 and the number of active pickleball players has nearly doubled in the country since 2010. According
to USA Pickleball Association, there are currently 1,900 places to play pickleball in the US with more courts being added each month. On March 7, Pickleball Channel, powered by Hyland’s Leg Cramps, made its internet debut. Every week, Pickleball Channel will bring web audiences new digital content from the quickly expanding world of pickleball. PickleballChannel.com is an interactive website that provides news and community resources for pickleball players and
organizations nationwide. The channel’s Executive Producer Rusty Howes says that with the lightning-speed growth of pickleball, there was a need for exciting digital content online to serve the sport’s growing fanbase. “PickleballChannel.com brings fans interesting stories and helpful tips in one accessible location,” says Howes. “It’s the place where Pickleballers young and old, novice and professional, can come together, tell their

Co-chaired by Barbara Keller, Terri Ketover, Bernie Fromm, and Ed Gubman, the event honored Childers for his work over the past seven years having produced Jewish Family Service of the Desert’s sold out “ONE NIGHT ONLY.” This event has successfully raised in excess of $ 1 million to benefit Jewish Family Service of the Desert’s critically-needed counseling, senior care, and emergency assistance services. Patrick Evans, CBS Chief Meteorologist & Host of “EYE ON THE DESERT” served as Master of Ceremonies for this grand event. “Jewish Family Service of the Desert will touch the lives of almost 5,000 people this year through psychotherapy, school based counseling, drug education, senior care management, and our very special tradition based programs for the Jewish community,” stated Executive Director Maureen Forman, LCSW. “Michael’s gift IS his gift for light . . . . a light that he has so graciously shared with Jewish Family Service over the past 7 years. He creates the light of joy and entertainment, year after year and then tosses that light to our patrons and donors. These donors then catch the light and through a strange alchemy of compassion, that light gets transformed into a light that shines on our clients,” Forman continued. Numerous personal video tributes to Childers were shown during the luncheon from some of his celebrity friends, including Stephanie Powers, Bruce Villanch, Doris Roberts, Bob Mackie, Peter Bart, and Senator Barbara Boxer, all reminiscing about Childers star-studded life. A special treat that guests thoroughly enjoyed was the “ROAST” song about Childers life, specially written by acclaimed lyricist David Zippel, recipient of a Tony Award, two Academy Award-nominations, two Grammy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations. Zippel is one of a few contemporary lyricists who has achieved success on Broadway, in Hollywood, and in Pop music. Zippel’s song was masterfully performed by Jason Graae, award-winning Actor/Singer/Dancer, who is the recipient for a second time of the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Achievement in Musical Theatre. “This song is an affectionate parody of a famous song toasting and roasting our dear friend Michael, who I have had the privilege of knowing for a couple of decades,” stated David Zippel. “It is a special delight to be asked to honor someone you adore. I think the world of Michael because you just cannot find a better friend,” Zippel continued. Palm Springs Mayor Pro Tem Rick Hutcheson personally presented Childers with a City Proclamation declaring March 6th as Michael Childers Day. www.desertstarweekly.com

Healthy Ways to Reinvent Yourself
Aging gracefully is as much about feeling good on the inside as feeling good on the outside. It’s never too late to make changes to reinvent yourself and maximize your mental and physical wellbeing. Self-improvement is at the
top of many women’s to-do lists, and doing so can take many forms. According to a recent survey by Post Great Grains Cereal, 73 percent of women said they’d reinvented themselves since they turned 40 by improving their health, finding
a new passion or changing their career. Eighty-three percent of survey participants (women, ages 40-plus) think the greatest obstacle to reaching their full potential is what they think of themselves, rather than what
others think of them. Follow these tips to become your own best friend and take steps toward creating a happier, healthier you. Give proper attention to your diet. A common form of reinvention is improving your eating habits. A balanced diet that promotes a healthy digestive system is an important step in creating a healthier you. Starting each day with a nutritious breakfast is one easy change. Fill your menu with nutrition you can see and wholesome ingredients, such as those in Great Grains Digestive Blend cereals, which have active cultures in addition to whole grains and natural fiber. Take time to understand yourself. Digging deep to understand your true passions may help reveal a new, more fulfilling path in life, whether it be in the form of new hobbies or even a new career. If you’re not sure where to start, begin by making a running list of situations, which capture your attention, such as news articles or engaging conversations. Over time, look for patterns to emerge. By Desert Star Staff Thousand Palms, CA. – Before the Easter bunny hits the bunny trails and the kids come home for Spring Break, Animal Samaritans’ Adoption Alliance Program will reach an animal rescue milestone: 5,000 animals saved in less than three years. Animal Samaritans, in partnership with Riverside County Animal Services (RCAS), rescues more than 150 dogs and cats every month. Animal Samaritans’ special no-kill animal shelter has been
rescuing animals from RCAS into its personal shelter for decades, but through the Adoption Alliance program. They also rescue animals and place them with more than 130 animal rescue groups and fellow no-kill animal shelters throughout the U.S. and Canada. What’s more, the organization provides veterinary services, in some cases surgery, to adoptable animals that need medical attention before being ready for a safe haven and adoption. In addition to its primary partner, RCAS, Animal Samaritans
works locally to rescue animals with Animal Action League, Humane Society of the Desert, Living Free Animal Sanctuary, Loving All Animals, Morongo Basis Humane Society, Pet Place International, Save-A-Pet, and White Rock Horse Rescue. What will with the 5, 000th rescue be? A terrier or a toy poodle? A Pekinese or pug? A black lab or golden retriever? Perhaps it will be a cat, an orange tabby or tri-colored calico. Maybe it will be a mini-horse or someone’s abandoned rabbit. Which rescue
partner will take it in? Will they be local or out-of-state? Whatever the case, the Adoption Alliances’ 5, 000th saved animal will go to a no-kill animal shelter or pet recovery group that will keep it safe and work to adopt it into a new home. “This milestone, to be reached so fast, illustrates fantastic work on the part of our next-door neighbor, Animal Samaritans,” said Robert Miller, Director of Riverside County Animal Services. “Animal Samaritans should be proud of this accomplishment

rising to the top could signal a special interest you may have overlooked in the past. Nurture valuable relationships. Knowing (and loving) yourself comes first, but having a strong support system is also important for overall wellbeing. While it’s important for women to surround themselves with people who will boost them up, that boost doesn’t always have to come from another woman. When they need a good laugh, 59 percent of women in the Great Grains survey said they turn to their significant other. Investing time to strengthen your personal connections improves not only the health of those relationships, but the effects of those relationships on your physical health, as well. While charting a new path may seem daunting, focusing on your physical and mental health as you work to introduce change into your life can smooth the way to reinventing a better and brighter you. – and we’re pleased that our homeless pets from the Coachella Valley Animal Campus reap the rewards of all their hard work. They’re now in loving homes.” Animal Samaritans Adoption Alliance Rescue Coordinator Michelle Bergeron and part-time rescuer Jennifer Uberti work in tandem with staff from RCAS to access, test, and pull animals for rescue. Both organizations share a common goal: to reduce animal euthanasia rates and save more lives. “Five thousand discarded animals have been saved through the Adoption Alliance, and we can and will save more,” said Animal Samaritans’ Executive Director Fred Saunders. “The Adoption Alliance program needs your help in saving animals with donations, and volunteer assistance, including pet fostering, and pet transporters—Highway Heroes as we call them—to continue in the future.” Animal Samaritans relies on charitable contributions to underwrite its many community outreach programs, such as Humane Education in our local schools, emergency veterinary care for low-income seniors, and the feeding and care for animals at their own no-kill animal shelter. Animal Samaritans is currently seeking donations earmarked for The Adoption Alliance to ensure the program continues to thrive, and thousands more animals will be saved. Americans Believe In The Occult: Part 2 By Art Kunkin Mr. Life Extension Last week in this column I summarized a 2005 Gallup poll of 1002 American adults about occult and psychic beliefs. This Gallup Poll reported that three out of four Americans believe in some aspect of the paranormal and detailed the following conclusions: 55 percent of Americans believe in the psychic or spiritual power of the human mind to heal the human physical body. 42 percent of Americans believe that people on earth are sometimes possessed by the devil. 41 percent of the Americans polled by Gallup believe in extrasensory perception. 37 percent believe in the possibility that houses can be haunted by ghosts. 32 percent believe that the spirits of dead people can come back in certain places or situations. 36 percent believe in telepathy, communication between minds without using the traditional five senses. 25 percent believe in astrology, the belief that the position of the stars and planets can affect people’s lives, 32 percent of those polled believe in clairvoyance or the power of the mind to predict the future. 24 percent believe that extraterrestrial beings have visited earth at some time in the past. 28 percent of the 1002 American adults polled by
Gallup believe that people can communicate mentally with someone who has died. 21 percent believe in witches. This was the only one of the 13 questions asked by Gallup in the United States, Great Britain and Canada in which a solid majority of all responders in the three countries did not believe. 20 percent believed in reincarnation or the rebirth of the soul in a new body after death. Another 20 percent of those polled were uncertain of reincarnation was possible. Only 9 percent of the American adults polled by Gallup believed in channeling or the ability of a “spirit-being to temporarily assume control of a human body. The Gallup Poll showed little statistical difference among people in the U.S. by age, education, race and religion. However, belief did differ by gender. Women were more likely than men to believe in haunted houses, astrology and communicating with the dead. Men showed a slightly greater tendency than women to believe in extraterrestrial beings. Similar results were obtained in a 2009 Harris Poll of 2,303 adult Americans. 82% believed in God according to Harris. 76% believed in miracles. 75% believed in Heaven. 73% believed that Jesus is God or the Son of God 72% believed in angels. 71% believed in survival of the soul after death. 70% believed in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 61%
believed in hell. 61% believed in the virgin birth (of Jesus). 60% believed in the devil. 45% believed in Darwin’s theory of evolution. 42% believed in ghosts. 40% believed in creationism and not Darwin’s theory of evolution. 32% believed in UFOs. 26% believed in astrology. 23% believed in witches. 20% believed in reincarnation/ T h e p e rc e n t a g e s o f Canadians and Britons who hold such beliefs in the occult or paranormal are nearly identical to those of Americans. For example, a 2006 Readers Digest survey of 1,006 adults in Great Britain reported that 43 percent said that they can read other people’s thoughts or have their thoughts read. More than half said they have had a dream or premonition of an event that then actually happened. More than two-thirds in this Readers Digest survey in Great Britain said they could feel when someone was looking at them. 26 percent said they have mentally sensed when a loved-one was ill or in trouble. 62 percent said that they could tell who was calling before they picked up the phone. In addition, a fifth said they had seen a ghost while nearly a third said they believe that neardeath experiences are evidence for an afterlife. The tendency to believe in some paranormal occurrences varied by ideology -- political c o n s e r v a t i v e s a p p e a re d significantly more skeptical than either moderates or liberals.
Americans with the highest levels of education were more likely than others to believe in the power of the mind to heal the body. On the other hand, belief in three of the phenomena tested went up as the educational level of the responders went down: possession by the devil, astrology and haunted houses. The major difference between religious and non-religious people in these polls focused on ideas about the devil. For example, 55% of those Americans polled by Gallup[who said religion is very important in their daily lives also said they believe in devil possession, compared to just 14% of those who said religion is “not very important to them. ‘American Hustle’ a Reel Winner on DVD
By Theda Kleinhans Reichman “American Hustle” garnered double digit Academy Award nominations, ten total, but came away empty handed on Oscar’s night. That being said, it was a big winner at the SAG Awards, winning for best ensemble performances in a motion picture. It also won a Golden Globe and New York Film Critics Circle Award in the Best-Picture category and received Oscar nominations in all four acting categories and was in contention for finest picture, best director and best screenplay Oscars. All in all, that adds up to one fine dramedy now available on DVD. Director David O. Russell’s caper is a fictionalized version of the real-life Abscam scandal of the recent past when FBI agents used entrapment techniques to nab corrupt government officials. In the film, Bradley Cooper plays an overly ambitious FBI agent eager to make a name for himself in the Bureau. To do so he enlists the cooperation of two small-time con artists. The con artists in question are Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) and his clever, classy partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams). Cooper has entrapped these two for scamming, and in return for their cooperation, he will have charges dropped if they help him capture bigger prey— government crooks. The film is lots of fun, and you find yourself really liking Irving, who turns out to be a con artist with a conscience of sorts as well as a good heart, even though he has a bum
ticker. Adding to the plot twists and turns are love triangles and the Mafia when the New Jersey mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner) decides to accept Irving’s help to get money from a rich Arab Sheik (a fake) in order to have funds to revamp Atlantic City, which will bring in jobs, but Polito also brings in the mob in order to make everything work well and profitably. Soon
things start to look pretty shaky for Irving, who is caught in the middle. His unpredictable wife, Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence who is absolutely great) could be the spoiler causing everything to collapse. She is jealous and also vengeful because she hates the fact that her husband is in love with his business partner, Amy Adams. The constant plot twists, romantic ups and
downs add tension and fun to the proceedings. The movie is a extreme caper. It is also considerable fun. Perhaps the funniest bit in the entire movie has to do with a microwave oven given as a gift to Irving from his new-found friend, the mayor. “American Hustle,” like Russell’s “Silver Lining Playbook,” is moving, emotional and truly involving. Although some not an
Oscar winner, the film is a winner in every way. From Sony Pictures, rated R for pervasive language, some sexual content and brief violence. The DVD and Blu-ray have a featurette on the making of “American Hustle” plus deleted scenes.
A Film About Motorcyclists Who Ride With Dogs By Desert Star Staff MISSOULA, Mont., -The latest project by veteran indie filmmakers Eric Ristau and Geneva Liimatta is an upbeat documentary that also focuses on a worthwhile cause. This husband-and-wife team from Missoula, Mont., is putting together a film about motorcyclists who bring their dogs along for the ride. No, these easy-riding pups don’t sit on the seat, clasping their owner’s midsection. They ride in sidecars and wear specially designed dog goggles (called “doggles”). Fittingly the movie is entitled Sit Stay Ride: The Story of America’s Sidecar Dogs. “Seeing a dog in a sidecar brings a smile to everyone’s face,” says Liimatta. “Our film explores the relationship between sidecar dogs and their motorcycle-riding humans. The dogs and humans we’ve met while shooting this project are

amazing characters. You’ll love them all.” So far, footage for Sit Stay Ride has been shot in Washington, California and Montana. “We’ve found other amazing sidecar dogs in other parts of the country,” Ristau says. “We really want to include them in the movie.” Traveling around the country to produce a film is an expensive proposition, however. Ristau and Liimatta have a budget of $28,000 for travel, a soundtrack, sound mix, color correction, DVD manufacturing, distribution and promotion. In order to defray these costs, they have launched a Kickstarter campaign, encouraging dog-lovers, motorcyclists and anyone else to support production of the film. Thus far, about $10,000 has been raised. Information about their Kickstarter campaign, including sample clips from the movie, can be viewed at www.sidecardogs.com.

By Dan Marinelli COACHELLA VALLEY – For the first time since 2005 and 2006, the Indio High School Rajahs softball team has a chance to win back-to-back DVL titles. Standing in the Rajahs way, as usual, are the seven-time defending DVL champion La Quinta High School Blackhawks – who finished last season tied atop the standings with the Rajahs and the Palm Desert High School Aztecs. Winning or sharing the DVL title is not uncommon for the Blackhawks and Rajahs Indio and La Quinta have
to replace pitchers Alyssa Luna and Melanie Rodriguez, both of whom recorded five wins last year. Even with the holes left from the absences of the aforementioned players, with yet another loaded roster, the Blackhawks look like the favorites to take the DVL. This season, La Quinta brings back last year’s DVL leader in wins – junior pitcher Star Padilla. Joining Padilla in 2014 are the Blackhawks top two batters from 2013 – senior Dominique Rivas (.507 avg.) and junior Kelli Finan (.507 avg). The 2014 Blackhawks (0-0 in DVL, 6-4 Overall) have some work to do to play up to par with last year’s team that opened the season 8-0, also making it all the way to the Division 4 CIF-SS quarterfinals. They may be just a hair above .500 in this early season, but the abundance of preseason games the Blackhawks have played will definitely be an experiential advantage when league play starts in two weeks. The Rajahs (0-0 in DVL, 2-5 Overall) have not had an ideal start to the season, too. Indio has had some trouble plating runs this year, only scoring 4.14 runs, per game. Pitching, however, has been the bane of Indio’s first seven games – giving up 10.1 runs a game. Although Indio brings back senior pitcher Amanda Martinez,

won or shared the DVL title each of – at least – the last nine seasons. Prior to 2013, the most recent tie for first between these two schools was in 2009 – when both teams went 13-2 in league. Dating back to 2007, excluding the seasons they shared the league championship, the Rajahs have finished second to the Blackhawks, every year. head coach Marissa Araujo lost the Rajahs best, and arguably the league’s best pitcher from 2013 – Heather Morales. In addition to her pitching, Morales was also the Rajahs best hitter. Despite losing their overall best player to graduation, Indio does return four of its top five batters from last season (Savannah Gaeta, Nicole Romero, Gianna Espinoza and Ashley Oakley). Since 2011, when they finished in fourth place with a 3-5 record in the DVL, the Aztecs have slightly improved each year until finally winning a share of the league title in 2013. Continuing this year’s trend among the DVL’s top teams, the Aztecs (0-0 in DVL, 1-4 Overall) have also had a slow start to 2014. If this season is anything like 2013; Palm Desert should finish strong and make a spirited run at the DVL title. The Aztecs only lost two starting seniors from last year’s championship team. Palm Desert’s head coach Steve Leonhard has top batters Lyzette Huizer, Maya Pollard and Ayanna Murphy returning to help make another run at the league championship. The Cathedral City High School Lions (0-0 in DVL, 3-0 Overall) and last year’s fourth place finishers, the Coachella Valley High School Arabs (0-0 in DVL, 4-2 Overall), have had the
hottest starts to the young 2014 season. In spite of their starts, the Lions and Arabs have not even been in the discussion for DVL’s best since the Lions ended the 2006 season in third, and the Arabs third place finish in 2008. On March 17, Indio traveled to Redlands to take on the Redlands-based Citrus Valley High School Blackhawks in the Redlands Invitational. Indio will also play Redlands Invitational games on March 20 and 22 against teams TBA. Palm Desert played in the Redlands Invitational against Redlands High Terriers on March 17. Later in the week, Palm Desert will play more Redlands Invitational games to be announced later. On March 18, La Quinta welcomed the El Centro-based Central High School Spartans. La Quinta plays another home game on March 22 against California’s No. 15-ranked Riverside Poly High School Bears. On March 18, Cathedral City welcomed the Hemet-based Tahquitz High School Titans to Cathedral City High School. Cathedral City travels to Desert Hot Springs High School to take on the Golden Eagles on March 22. Coachella Valley does not have any games scheduled until their April 4 league opener at home against Cathedral City. www.desertstarweekly.com

Janie Hendrix, sister to the late Jimi Hendrix, joined Corbett to dedicate the stamp. “I am deeply touched and so are other members of the Hendrix family by the issuance of this stamp, and I wish to thank the United States Postal Service for bestowing one of our nation’s highest honors on my brother Jimi,” said Janie Hendrix. “While my brother has been cited many times as being among the most influential musicians of all time, the recognition implicit in his being portrayed on a U.S. postage stamp ranks as an unparalleled honor.” The stamp dedication was held prior to a Jimi Hendrix Celebration concert at the SXSW Outdoor Stage at Butler Park. There were performances by guitar luminaries, Wayne Kramer, guitarist for Motor City 5; Slash, March 19, 2014
former lead guitarist for Guns N’ Roses; Rusty Anderson, lead guitarist for Paul McCartney’s tours; and Perry Farrell, lead singer for Jane’s Addiction. Also, the concert featured Robby Krieger, guitarist for the Doors; Mary Bridget Davies, star of Broadway’s “A Night with Janis Joplin”; Jesse Malin, guitarist/ musician; Dave and Phil Alvin, former guitarists for The Blasters; and Etty Farrell, wife of Perry Farrell and former star of E! reality series, “Married to Rock.” The Postal Service has released numerous stamps to celebrate and honor music icons who had a big impact on American culture and the music industry. The Jimi Hendrix Forever Stamp kicks off the 2014 Music Icons series, which will include Janis Joplin later this year. The 2013 Music Icons series honored
Johnny Cash, Ray Charles and Lydia Mendoza. The new limited-edition Jimi Hendrix stamp, designed by artist Rudy Gutierrez, features a vibrant, colorful design fashioned to evoke the movement and rhythm of the late singer and pay homage to the psychedelic rock era of the 1960s. The stamp pane, designed to resemble a vintage 45 rpm record sleeve, features a painting of Hendrix’s face surrounded by colorful swirls and small icons that reference song lyrics or aspects of Hendrix’s life. The various icons include flowers, a guitar, a mermaid and a butterfly. The stamp art shows Hendrix in performance, wearing one of his trademark vintage military jackets and playing one of his beloved white Fender Stratocaster guitars.

Sam Sheperd Drama On Stage At COD By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic. A Special for the Desert Star It was a different cultural America when Sam Shepard penned the play “Buried Child” in 1978. As the author of some 45 plays, there are on-going themes that run throughout many of his plays. They are often dark, disturbing, and bleak. His characters are continually caught up in the quest for normalcy and a piece of the American dream. and are played out by dysfunctional families with dark secrets to protect. In “Buried Child”, Shepard’s 1970’s story is now the new normal when it comes to shocking behavior by today’s storytellers. Shepard hit the jackpot in 1979 with “Buried Child”, winning a Pulitzer Prize for Drama that launched his career as a major new American playwright. In this intense College of the Desert (COD) production, directed by Tres Dean, metaphors abound: a failed father figure for the American dream; a mother who betrays her trust; two sons who represent their society and its culture becoming victims, and
a grandson and his girlfriend who try to make sense of the American dream during the 60’s and 70’s where the father figure is expected, along with his wife, to leave the children of their marriage in a position “better off” than their parents left them. That will never happen for the alcoholic and dying Dodge (Mason McIntosh) and the bitterly disappointed Hallie (Mari Kerber). Their family farm in Illinois has fallen into a state of near bankruptcy through neglect and their failed marriage. Their two children, Tilden (Johnny Bolth) and Bradley (Chris Hoggatt), are flawed in so many ways that they will never become part of the American dream. Tilden has slipped into a mentally challenged state, and his brother Bradley, has lost a leg to a chainsaw farm accident. The family is barely functioning. All they do is snarl their dialogue at one another. Into this potentially explosive situation comes Vince (Paul Mackey) the grandson of Dodge and the son of Tilden, with his girlfriend Shelley (Miranda Hane)
in tow. Vince has been gone so long that when he and Shelley return for a brief visit, no one recognizes him as a member of the family. Shelly, the only character that appears to be somewhat “normal” tries to convince Vince to just move on and not cause any trouble in this obviously dysfunctional family. But Vince has other ideas. The secrets that tear at the fabric of the family are revealed late in the second act, however, there is a lot of shouting and yelling at one another that goes on before we get to that denouement. The young actors are earnest and passionate in their portrayals, but it can become heavy going on the part
of the audience in the quest for relevancy for what is taking place on stage. Auditory overload (too much shouting and yelling at one another) is a recipe for audience turnoff, so voice modulation protocol needs to kick-in to gear. We’re only about 35 feet from the actors in the Pollock Theatre. Sometime, less is better. It’s just a suggestion… However, actors McIntosh, Bolth, and Hane, do make the most of their time on stage. Cast member Jesse Bentley has the unenviable role of representing religion in the story as a priest who plays fast and loose with his vows. Once again Shepard reminds us how flawed some our institutions are. Director Dean and his
creative team led by JW Layne as scenic, technical, sound, and lighting designer provides a set right out of tobacco road. It has that lived-in and neglected look of a rural farm in decline. Kailey Osgood-McAuliffe’s costumes reflect the time period, and Noemi Villaela Dean’s, Musical Sound design interludes are nicely appropriate. When one hears Johnny Cash singing lyrics that fit the mood and theme of the play, you know you’re not in a big urban city anymore.
“Buried Child”, at COD’s Pollock Theatre runs through March 23rd. For tickets call 760773-2565.
