The superhero-inspired event invites the public to attend with a recommended donation of $30 per person to participate. Participants will

also have the opportunity to purchase a commemorative t-shirt for an additional $10 before the event. All participants will gather for a socially distanced 15 station outdoor workout, Firetruck pull, Walk-A-Thon, and Guns vs. Hoses event in Jameson’s honor. Memorializing a Loved One During the Pandemic By Desert Star Staff Among the many struggles of the pandemic are finding ways to grieve and honor a loved one who has died under the constraints of COVID-19. The missed opportunity for a traditional funeral or memorial service has left some at a loss for how to honor their loved one’s life and start their grief journey. Even if you are unable to hold a traditional service, there are still ways for families to remember a loved one and find support during this stressful and emotional time. Consider these four ideas from Remembering a Life, an online resource from the experts at the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA).

on what is permissible in his or her community and how a family can plan an intimate and meaningful service.

Hold a Small Service Now: While some communities are still limiting public gatherings, such as funerals, restrictions have eased in many areas and families may be able to have small services in a funeral home, a place of worship, at a cemetery or another meaningful location. A funeral director can provide guidance

Host a Private Service with a Memorial Service at a Later Date: Since the onset of the pandemic, many families have opted to postpone a loved one’s service and hold some type of service once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. A funeral or memorial service, regardless of when it is held, offers the opportunity to gather, support one another,

Consider Going Virtual: While most people find inperson services to be more healing, there are many options for incorporating a virtual component into a service when public gatherings are limited. With almost half of NFDA-member funeral homes offering livestreaming options since the onset of COVID-19, this option provides family and loved ones the opportunity to attend services and gives out-of-town family and friends who may be concerned about travel the chance to participate.

While immediate family members may have been able to gather for a service and other family and friends could participate virtually, there are often many friends and family members who would appreciate being part of an in-person service to pay tribute to a loved one who died.

Remember Loved Ones with Small Tributes: Sometimes even the simplest things can help recall fond memories of loved ones, whether by listening to their favorite music, eating their favorite foods or visiting places they enjoyed visiting. Remembering the things that were important to a loved one can help keep his or her memory alive.

EU drugs regulator backs AstraZeneca Covid-19 jab

By Desert Star Staff The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is continuing to study reports of rare blood clot events potentially linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine but said on Thursday that the jab “is safe and effective in preventing Covid-19”. Following a review of the vaccine and reported rare incidents of blood clots among recipients, the EMA did not find a link to an overall risk of blood clotting but will continue its investigations. The regulator’s findings come after 13 EU member states halted their AstraZeneca vaccine rollouts, which the AngloSwedish pharmaceutical company developed with

Oxford University. Speaking at a press conference to discuss the agency’s review, EMA chief Emer Cooke said the regulator’s Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee had come to a “clear scientific conclusion” after reviewing reports of blood clotting. Cooke added that despite days of in-depth analysis of numerous evidence, the EMA “still cannot rule out definitively” a link between cases of blood clotting and the vaccine. Therefore, the regulator has recommended highlighting the possible risks in updated product information and will launch additional investigations and studies into blood clotting, she said. “This is a safe and effective vaccine, its benefits in protecting people from Covid-19 with the associated risks of death and hospitalization outweigh the possible risks,” Cooke said. The committee also concluded that the vaccine is not associated with an increase in the overall risk of thromboembolic

events or blood clots. Cooke did stress, however, that during the EMA probe and review, officials saw a “small number of cases of rare and unusual but very serious clotting disorders” that had led to a more focused review, which is underway. About 7 million people have received the AstraZeneca vaccine in the EU and 11 million in the UK, and the jab is being rolled out in other countries.

The benefits of using the AstraZeneca vaccine “outweigh its risks,” the World Health Organization and the UK’s drugs regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, said in statements Thursday. Concerns about the AstraZeneca vaccine arose earlier this month when Austria paused its rollout of the jab after one person who received it died from thrombosis. A second was

hospitalized with pulmonary embolism. Last week other EU nations followed, temporarily suspending their use of the jab, Germany, France, and Italy becoming the latest to pause their rollouts on Monday. Spain was among those to suspend its vaccination drive with AstraZeneca, but on Thursday, its interregional council for the Covid-19 response is set to meet and discuss resuming use of the jab.

Report: Young Women at Increased Risk of Colon Cancer

From 1980 to 2018, almost half the U.S. counties considered hotspots for women’s colon cancer were in the Northeast and Midwest. (Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff BALTIMORE -- It’s Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and health experts are sounding the alarm over higher fatality rates in young women.

Maryland is among the states considered to be “hotspots” for colon cancer, which is the third-leading cause of death in the U.S., but also the most preventable.

A study published in December 2020 shows earlyonset colorectal cancer in young women has been linked to such factors as lack of physical activity and obesity.

Dr. Reezwana Chowdhury, assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University, said healthcare disparities contribute to late detection, and a worse prognosis. “We know that African Americans do have a higher incidence and mortality from colorectal cancer,” Chowdhury observed. “So, one is adequate healthcare; reaching a physician to discuss symptoms, coming in to get their screening.” According to the study, Black women living in hotspot states like Maryland accounted for 23% of earlyonset colorectal cancer cases, compared to 14% in other states. Rates of early-onset colon cancer among white women were about the same, no matter whether they lived in an area classified as a hotspot. The study cites not only low physical activity and poor diet, but socioeconomic status as a contributor to

colon-cancer prevalence. In Maryland, twice as many Black residents live below the poverty line as white residents, and women are more likely to have lower incomes than men. Dr. Chowdhury noted these are warning signs worth paying attention to. “It kind of brings to our attention, ‘Let’s not ignore symptoms that we might have in the past,’ because maybe it could be more heightened, or sensitive, to the fact that something may be going on in our environment,” Chowdhury advised. “There are other folks in our location who are now being diagnosed with earlieronset colorectal cancer.” She added colon cancer is more treatable at an early stage, but the pandemic has led to a major dropin preventive screenings, down 86% nationwide, according to electronic health records.

Three dead after driver plows into at least eight pedestrians

By Desert Star Staff Three people have been killed and several more injured after being struck by a car in an underpass at San Diego City College in California on Monday, local police have said. One person has been arrested. The driver has been arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired, San Diego Police Department Chief David Nisleit said. The man is reported to be a 71-year-old who drove a Volvo station wagon and was detained by police after identifying himself to officers. Three people died from their injuries at the scene, San Diego Fire Department chief Colin Stowel told reporters. A further six people have been hospitalized.

The incident was reported just after 9 am local time at the 1400 block of B Street in a tunnel that runs under the college. Several medics and around 60 firefighters attended the incident, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. Stowel described the incident as “tragic” and said it “impacts all of us” while praising the emergency services personnel involved in the response. Local media report that the scene of Monday’s incident is frequented by homeless people who shelter along the tunnel’s sidewalks. Local resident Ronnie Williams, who was under the bridge at the time of the incident, told News8 that he heard a “bang” and saw the

driver hit “two or three tents.” He said the car then plowed March 19, 2021

into up to five more tents before Williams himself was

also struck by the vehicle, sustaining a minor leg injury. www.desertstarweekly.com

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (916)939-0772, or visit this internet website http:// search.nationwideposting.com/propertySearchTerms.aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA2000286659 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Improving Distance Learning: An Equity Issue for Many CA Kids

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -This week, millions of California kids will step into classrooms for the first time since the pandemic started a year ago. Even so, advocates for public education say the state can’t let the quality of distance learning deteriorate. A large number of families are choosing to delay their children’s return to in-person classes. Jaia Peterson Lent, deputy executive director of the National Center on Grandfamilies, said that’s especially true of multigenerational families where grandparents are the caregivers. “They may have a real fear that if they were to get COVID-19 and be unable to continue to care for the child, that there isn’t a backup plan for that child,” Lent explained. “So, they’re big decisions; they’re difficult decisions.” Many see support

for distance learning as an equity issue. Pew Research Center data show the highest share of multigenerational households are Asian and Latino families, at 29% and 27%, respectively. The publication Business Insider looked at census data and found California has more than three-quarters of a million multigenerational households. That’s the second-highest share in the country, at 5.77%. E. Toby Boyd, president of the California Teachers Association, predicted the new stimulus package signed by President Joe Biden last week would help school districts optimize distance learning. “Well, it’s going to assist in making sure the connectivity, the equipment, is going to be there,” Boyd remarked. “So it’s going to take a while to build up. But with the resources now, they’re going to have that opportunity to make sure it is occurring.” A survey done last fall in

Getting Vaccines to Returning Migrant Farmers

By Desert Star Staff OLATHE, Colo. -- Colorado farms bring back seasonal workers to get started on this year’s crops, and community health centers are gearing up to ensure they can access health care and COVID-19 vaccines. Kaye Hotsenpiller, chief operations officer for River Valley Family Health Center, which serves Olathe, Montrose, and Delta on the Western Slope, said migrant

workers face unique risks. Frequently, more than 20 farmers work alongside each other every day and go home together at night to dormitory-like settings. “They have a common kitchen, common living room,” Hotsenpiller explained. “And so, if one of them goes to a supermarket and brings it back, it’s highly likely that they will all get it.” River Valley staff will travel

to farms starting in late March. Providers will offer COVID vaccines, along with primary, dental, and mental health care. They’ll also screen for cholesterol levels and other indicators to identify and treat diabetes or other health conditions. Staff will make a second trip to farms at a later date to complete the vaccine regimen. Hotsenpiller noted relationships built with

community leaders over the years helped pave the way for delivering care during the coronavirus pandemic. She added many farms bring back the same workers each year, so patients already are on file in the River Valley system. “It’s about trust, so it’s about those workers trusting what we do,” Hotsenpiller stated. “They know that we’re safe, and they know

that River Valley is a trusted source of health care.” Axis Health System is a Federally Qualified Health Center in Durango that’s been distributing vaccines to agricultural communities since January. The group has also expanded outreach efforts to connect farmworkers with care and host a booth at the Four States Ag Expo in Cortez later this month.
