Oh What A Night!
Big winners Mahershala Ali, Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Casey Affleck at 2017 Oscars
“La La Land” didn’t sweep Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards as expected ‘Moonlight’ wins Best Picture after some confusion By Theda Kleinhans Reichman The 2017 Oscar telecast has come and gone, but it will go down in Oscar’s history in the way the evening ended, with a monumental gaffe in which the wrong winner for the best picture was announced. Presenter Warren Beatty looked at the red envelope handed to him and seemed at a loss for
words, so he handed it to Faye Dunaway, who announced, “La La Land” had won as the best picture of the year. The cast and producers of “La La Land” rushed on stage, and happy acceptance speeches were given before event staff and host Jimmy Kimmel ran out saying there was a mistake— ”Moonlight” was the actual
winner. The announcement was made by a “La La Land” producer who just a moment before had received the Oscar, given his speech, and was now presenting the award to the producers of “Moonlight.” At this point, all the Oscars quickly and graciously changed hands. Everyone in the Dolby Theatre was in
By Desert Star Staff At least 4 people have been killed and 2 injured after a Cessna 310 aircraft crashed in a neighborhood east of the Riverside Municipal Airport, setting several houses on fire. The aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from Riverside Municipal Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The sixseat, low-wing, twin-engine monoplane was in route to San Jose, California when it crashed in a residential neighborhood, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said. “We have recovered four victims that are deceased,” Fire Chief Michael Moore
told reporters, stating that at least one body was a “teenage” person. According to the chief, some 60 firefighters are still searching for at least two other missing people whose houses were destroyed in the plane crash. A further two people who suffered injuries are being treated in hospital. According to one survivor, five people were on board the plane coming back from a “cheer conference” at Disney Land. The circumstances of the crash were not immediately known. Images from the scene
showed extensive fire which erupted after the plane crashed into a suburban neighborhood of Riverside at the intersection of Central and Streeter Avenues. Riverside Police Lt. Charles Payne confirmed that two homes have been affected. Residents of nearby homes were evacuated from the area and taken to a local community center, Payne said. Authorities have cordoned off the area, while firefighters continue to battle the flames. More than a dozen emergency vehicles are at the scene, including paramedic vehicles and police cars.
shock, but that’s what makes live telecasts so potentially exciting. And even though the Best Picture win came and went in moments, “La La Land” still garnered six golden statuettes on Oscar’s night and was nominated in 14 categories. It also took home seven Golden Globes earlier in the year. Not bad, not bad at all...
Amid all the tumult, another mistake went nearly undetected that night. During the InMemoriam tribute, Australian costume designer Janet Patterson was commemorated, but the photo used was that of living Australian producer Jan Chapman, who later said, “I was Continues on Page 9

Oscar Night at El Paseo
Patti Gribow, Sandie Newton, and Donna Mills. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Oscar Night is a big night across the Desert with so many Oscar Parties. The Shops on El Paseo played host to the 3rd annual Oscar Party on El Paseo, Oscars Under the Stars. Red Carpet arrivals started at 4 in the afternoon. The event benefited Palm Springs Women In Film and Television. There was a special concert by Thelma Houston, a Grammywinning singer, during the cocktail hour. A short program that introduced the
managers of the shops on El Paseo was held prior to the dinner that was served by Wolfgang Puck Kitchen and Bar. A dessert was served with a gold gilded chocolate Oscar. Sandie Newton introduced actress Donna Mills and presented her with the Tiffany and Co. Legend Award in front of all the guests. Newton is a long-time friend of Donna Mills. The ceremony was held just outside the venue on a small stage area. Patti Gribow, President of PSWIFT spoke
Mary Jo Ginther, Warren Jones and Leanna Bonamici. Photo by Pat Krause to the guests and Fred Fern from The Shops on EL Paseo also spoke to the crowd. Guests were given table assignments with names like Best Actress, Best Director, Special Effects and other Oscar Awards names. Guests found it fun to try to look for their seats by the table names. Warren Jones, CEO of the Jones Group, created a special Oscar day party to remember with 3 huge TV screens so no one would miss a minute of the Oscar Awards on TV.
KESQ Local TV station 2 was on hand for the Red-Carpet Arrivals and Interviews with locals attending the event. Guests dressed in their best finery for the occasion would cheer and clap when their favorite actor or actress won an Oscar. A few guests clapped when political comments were made while the rest just stayed silent. This is a very festive event, and it brings a bit of Hollywood to the Valley. There was a after party so guests could talk about who won and
who lost in the Oscar Race. Palm Springs Women in Film and Television, PSWIFT, empower women in the entertainment industry and media. The cocktail hour was also a time to buy silent auction items and buy items from various vendors in the room. Local weatherman, Patrick Evans, held the duties as Emcee. Dinner consisted of a shrimp and crab salad with the main course of Lamb chops and jumbo shrimp with a chocolate banana mousse cake.Very delicious. The live auction was held after dinner was served and there were eight items of jewelry, dinners and vacations.

Entertainment was provided by American Idol Finalist Katharine McPhee. Her Grandmother, a past president of Pathfinders - Gloria Burch, asked McPhee if she was willing to perform at the gala. She said yes and even brought her pregnant sister along to perform. It was an amazing evening of songs when each woman performed solos for the crowd, both having great voices. It was especially nice when the women sang the song, “Sisters” together. The gala provided a runway that ran into the dinner guests, consequently they could see her up close and personal. This is not a usual concert for McPhee for such a small March 1, 2017
gathering hence it was a very special night for all. McPhee stars in several TV shows and has made a CD of songs her mother used to sing. She tours with her three piece band, and they sounded great on such a small stage. Many guests followed
her time on American Idol and her career because of her Mother and Grandmother that are involved with Pathfinders. There was an after party where guests could speak to McPhee and get a photo with her, a very gracious young lady.

Women & Investing & How to Improve Confidence
By Janice Gough According studies, part of women’s lack of confidence when it comes to investing is genetic. It is the way our brains are wired. Part of it is the way we’re raised. But a lot of it is what we do to ourselves—and that’s something we can change. The following are some ways women can re-train their brains to feel and act with more confidence and overcome these hurtles. 1. Don’t keep tinkering with things to make them perfect. It’s often better to make a decision with the

available information so you can keep moving forward. Sometimes you may be wrong, but by not second guessing yourself, you’ll spend more time going down blind alleys 2. Get outside your comfort zone. Try something you thought you’d never be good at: public speaking, coaching kids’ soccer, understanding Keynesian economics. What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger. 3. Be willing to be different. Women often try too hard to please everyone. If you find yourself in the midst of a maledominated conversation, you should “speak with authority” and “make a point of having a different point of view.” 4. Don’t automatically blame yourself for setbacks. Shift more of the responsibility to forces beyond your control, allowing you to let go and move on. 5. Take credit for what you’ve achieved. Instead of modestly brushing off a compliment, accept it and let it give you confidence for the next step. 6. Handle criticism by mentally converting it to a comment you can use. For example, you could respond to a negative comment that
your presentation went on too long by saying, “Thank you. Next time I won’t try to cover so many bases at once.” 7. Kill negative automatic thoughts.” Self-talk” can be crippling. (“I’m not valuable enough for the boss to give me a raise”) by writing it down as it occurs, then throwing the paper away. 8. Surround yourself with positive people who are strong confident peers and support you. 9. Shy about putting yourself forward? Think “we” instead of “me.” This can work well for women who hate to
deliver a talk or even speak up in a meeting. Envision yourself as the representative of your entire team or a group of people like yourself, and speak on their behalf. Be assertive in a good way. 10. Keep your bosses posted on your achievements. It’s very possible that they’re too busy to notice the terrific job you’re doing. 11. If you want a raise or more responsibility, step up and make the case for it. Nobody else will toot your horn, if you don’t stand up for yourself. 12. Accept that you aren’t perfect. It’s exhausting—and
impossible—to pretend to be infallible. But take care, not to put down your own abilities. 13. Most importantly, be yourself. Trust your instincts. Use your innate ability to build connections and consensus, but don’t be intimidated out of something you believe in.
be part of the “unit.” If the piping is outside the airspace of the unit, unless the documents say differently, it is common area, per Civil Code 4095. The association maintains and repairs common area, per Civil 4775(a)(1), unless the CC&Rs say otherwise. Exclusive use area is treated differently, in that the association repairs it but the owner maintains it (again, unless the CC&Rs say otherwise), per 4775(a) (3). Most associations’ original CC&Rs do not contain much of a definition of exclusive use common area, so associations then rely upon the default definition of “exclusive use common area” found in Civil Code 4145(b). That definition is broad, but does not specifically mention piping. The interpretation of the law and the governing documents to determine the nature of piping and maintenance allocation is best handled by the HOA’s attorney. Many association attorneys in past years interpreted Civil Code 4145(b) such that a water supply or water drain pipe outside the unit, but serving only that unit, was exclusive use common area and so the homeowner had to maintain it. This approach was rejected in the 2010 appellate decision of Dover Village v. Jennison. In that case, the CC&Rs said nothing about pipes or drains,
and the HOA took the position that a clogged patio drain pipe, if it drained only one patio, was exclusive use common area and therefore the homeowner’s maintenance responsibility. The appellate ruling rejected that interpretation, saying that the piping was an integrated system and that one segment could not be separated out from the rest. However, the court in interpreting the statute specifically noted that the governing documents were silent on the subject. Since Civil 4775 allows allocation by the CC&Rs of maintenance and repair responsibility for exclusive use areas differently than the statute’s default allocation, association CC&Rs could define such a pipe as exclusive use. Many associations find that the original developer-
supplied governing documents do not adequately deal with the specific needs of their property, and pursue a more customized set of CC&Rs for their association. That is a good time to take a long look at how piping is defined and how responsibility is allocated, and then include specifics in updated CC&Rs. Thanks for your question, Kelly

HOA Homefront – Whose Pipes Are Those? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Hi Kelly, I hope all is well. Thank you for your great HOA articles. What is the definition of internal installations of the unit? Are pipes in the wall considered internal installations of the unit? My take is internal means inside; so inside the unit. Can you please help me understand what internal installations of the unit mean? Thank you very much. Best regards, E.S., Hermosa Beach Dear. E.S.: I am assuming your association is a condominium, in which it is important to define common area and exclusive use common area. Determining which piping is homeowner or association responsibility is a very common point of contention, and can require review of the condominium plan (a recorded document by which the condominiums were created), CC&Rs, and Civil Code. To sort this out, one would first look at the association condominium plan. Is “unit” defined as a block of airspace surrounded by the unfinished walls, ceilings and floors? If so, then piping within the airspace of the unit (such as sink plumbing traps or toilet angle stops) would normally

2017 Fair Finds Hundreds of Homes for Loving Dogs
By Desert Star Staff Indio, CA – For the
fourth year in a row, the 71st Annual Riverside County
Fair & National Date Festival has joined forces with the
Riverside County Department of Animal Services and hosted animal adoptions. Efforts over these combined years have helped place more than 900 rescued animals into loving homes. During the ten day 2017 Fair over 300 dogs found forever homes. The successful adoption events have been part of ongoing effort led by the Riverside County Department of Animal Services, and in memory of Supervisor John J. Benoit, to place many of the homeless animals into healthy and caring homes. Special reduced adoption fees included vaccinations, a microchip and the pet’s surgery (note: most of these dogs have already had their spay or neuter surgery prior to their fair excursion -- so
they’re ready to go home on the same day of adoption). The County of Riverside Animal Services Department was on site every day of the10- day Fair, along with adoption counselors to help the public with the placement of a homeless dog into a forever home. There were approximately 50-60 dogs available each day for the duration of the Fair along with temporary licensing on site. The 71st Annual Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival, February 17-26, 2017 is presented by Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, the desert’s leader in gaming and entertainment. US not rich enough to give away money for free - Bill Gates
By Desert Star Staff Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates said it’s too early to dish out money to needy people, though the billionaire accepts the idea of universal basic income (UBI). Over time countries will be rich enough to do this. However we still have a lot of work that should be done - helping older people, helping kids with special needs, having more adults helping in education,” he
said, responding to users’ questions during an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit. UBI is an idea to provide people with a regular allowance regardless of their income or assets. The system can reportedly close gaps in equality, with an individual’s basic needs covered with free cash, funded by massive taxes at the top. “Even the US isn’t rich enough to allow people not to work. Some day we will be,
but until then things like the Earned Income Tax Credit will help increase the demand for labor,” the billionaire stressed. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a form of levy charged to lower-income families in the US to boost savings, incentivize work and help people to escape poverty. The idea of giving people money on a regular basis to increase social welfare has gained momentum in some countries in recent
years. Basic income was initially proposed in the 1960s and briefly tried out in the US and Canada. Finland launched its own two-year long experiment on basic income in January. The country’s authorities randomly chose 2,000 recipients of social assistance and started paying them €560 a month per month. Canada and the Netherlands have also announced similar experiments.
Last year, the Japanese government announced plans to issue money ‘vouchers’ for low-income young people to halt a significant decline in consumption within the age bracket. New Zealand is also debating UBI. Aiming to reduce poverty India’s Finance Ministry is considering replacing the country’s welfare programs with a basic income.
By Desert Star Staff Most Europeans support the idea of a “basic income” paid to every individual to cover their basic needs, according to the first EU-wide survey on the subject. Governments would pay the same amount of money to each person, regardless of whether they work. The poll, conducted by German company Dalia Research in April, was the first EU-wide survey to address the proposal of a basic income, defined in the poll as “an income unconditionally paid by the government to every individual regardless of whether they work and irrespective of
any other sources of income.” The preliminary results found that about 58 percent of respondents were aware of the idea of a basic income, and 64 percent would vote in favor of the policy in a referendum. Residents in Spain and Italy were most in favor of a basic income, with 71 percent and 69 percent saying they would vote for it, respectively. In addition to stating whether they would vote for a basic income, participants were also asked about their biggest hopes and fears if the model was introduced. Most of those in favor of the proposal – 40 percent –
said it would “reduce anxiety about basic financing needs,” while 31 percent said it would “improve equal opportunity.” Meanwhile, the most popular fear – expressed by 43 percent of respondents – was that basic income would encourage people to stop working. However, the survey indicated that this would not actually be the case, with around 34 percent of respondents saying that a basic income “would not affect my work choices.” Specifically, only 4 percent of participants saying they would stop working if they had a basic income, and just
7 percent said they would reduce their working hours. Several European countries have already begun working toward offering a basic income for their residents. Switzerland will vote on whether to introduce the model on June 5. Supporters of the initiative have suggested that each adult would receive 2,500 francs ($2,524) a month, with children receiving 625 francs ($631) a month until they reach 18. Finland is considering a two-year pilot program beginning in 2017 for 10,000 people to receive 550 euros ($616) a month. Four cities in the Netherlands are also testing
several variations of the model under a welfare experiment called ‘See What Works.’ Supporters of the basic income concept say it would abolish the current welfare state and allow for a fairer distribution of state funds, as each citizen would receive the same amount of money, regardless of status or personal circumstances. Meanwhile, critics have stated that the model would encourage people to leave the labor market and would fuel a sense of injustice from those who continue to work to support those who choose not to.
By Desert Star Staff OLYMPIA, Wash. – A new bill in the Washington state Legislature could help the growing number of workers without permanent jobs get benefits that go with them from job to job. Lawmakers in Olympia have introduced House
Bill 2109, which would set up portable, prorated accounts that give workers access to benefits such as worker’s compensation, health insurance, retirement savings and paid time off – services that are usually provided by employers in traditional work setups, but
typically aren’t for people who work as independent contractors, for instance. Nick Hanauer, the founder of Civic Ventures, an independent policy organization, helped craft this measure. “This legislation is designed to make benefits universally applied, so that every employer pays benefits in some way, shape or form,” said Hanauer, “and it’s not possible to somehow skirt through a loophole so everybody else pays benefits but you don’t.” Under the bill, an independent nonprofit would manage workers’ money pools. Contributions would be made monthly by each
employer a person works for. However, the bill could face opposition because of the costs it would pass on to businesses, workers or both. The market for workers without permanent jobs, who often work on short-term contracts or as freelancers, is often called the “gig economy.” The rise of the gig economy is changing the relationship between employers and employees. But Hanauer insists it shouldn’t be a way for companies to maneuver around labor standards. “We want companies to thrive because they’re innovative, not because they’re exploitive,” he said. “And the folks that work for
contractors, or Uber – or whoever it is – need the same kinds of benefits that folks who work for Microsoft get. And they deserve them.” Nearly 40 percent of Americans don’t have fulltime jobs, according to a Government Accountability Office report. And a growing number have alternative employment arrangements – working as independent contractors for such companies as Uber or Lyft, as freelancers, or for temp agencies. A study by professors at Harvard and Princeton Universities found the number grew from 10 percent in 2005 to 16 percent in 2015.

Conservation Groups Fight Back Against “Water Grab”
By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. – Michiganders have just a few days left to let state officials know how they feel about the planned expansion of a bottled-water operation that some are calling a betrayal of the state’s residents and resources. Swiss bottled water giant Nestle has asked the state for permission to increase the amount of groundwater it pumps from 150 to 400 gallons-per-minute at its
production wells north of Evart, in exchange for a business fee of just $200 per year. Jeff Ostahowski, the vice president of the group, Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation, says he finds the proposal outrageous, given the Flint water crisis and the water shut-offs many Detroiters have experienced.
“Having people disconnected from water for small amounts of money and having the world’s greatest water bottler receive so much for so little points to a real inequity in our situation,” he said. Michigan’s Department of Environmental Quality issued Nestle Water North America its first permit to extract state water for
profit in 2000. Since then, the company has extracted millions of gallons of water it bottles and sells for as much as two dollars a bottle. The DEQ is accepting public comment on the new proposal through this Friday. While the aquifer in question is located in Osceola County, Ostahowski says the idea of basically giving away the state’s water should concern all Michiganders who want to preserve the Great Lakes State way of life.
“When we don’t allow our best streams to process naturally through the ecosystem, we can’t help but make a mark on the quality of certainly the Muskegon River, and eventually Lake Michigan,” he explained. Tuesday, Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation and other concerned groups plan to deliver more than 345,000 petitions to the DEQ calling for the agency to cancel the plan with Nestle.
“I think that President Obama is behind it because his people are certainly behind it,” Trump added. “And some of the leaks possibly come from that group, which are really serious because they are very bad in terms of national security. But I also understand that is politics. In terms of him being behind
things, that’s politics. And it will probably continue,” he said. Earlier this month Trump voiced outrage over the leaks of transcripts of his outspoken telephone conversations with the leaders of Australia and Mexico, noting that his administration was hunting “very, very hard” for the whistleblowers. In an interview with Fox News, Trump accused “Obama people” of giving news outlets the details of his phone talks, saying that the holdovers from the Obama administration still serving on his White House and National Security Council staff were being replaced. “I would have handled it differently,” he said of White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s methods of hunting down leakers. “Sean handles it his way, and I’m OK with it.” Asked if he would step back from calling out his enemies on Twitter, Trump said the social network “does allow me to go around dishonest media.”
“Most of the people that want me to stop it are the enemies,” he said. Trump stood by his intent do boost the military budget by $54 billion, saying the money would come from a “revved-up economy” and reimbursements from countries relying on US military to defend them. “We will be having the greatest military that we ever had by the time I finish,” he said. Though he gave himself an A+ for effort and A for achievement for the first month of his presidency, Trump conceded his “messaging isn’t good.” “I think I’ve done great things, but I don’t think I’ve — I and my people — I don’t we’ve explained it well enough to the American public,” he said. As for the protesters, Trump dismissed their criticism by saying that “a lot of the people that are protesting are the people that lost the election.”
‘Obama & his people’ behind White House leaks, protests – Trump
By Desert Star Staff Barack Obama is behind the leaks of classified information from the White House and violent protests against the new administration, President Donald Trump has said in an interview with Fox News. During the ‘Fox and Friends’ interview, aired
Tuesday morning, the new Republican president was asked whether he thought his predecessor was behind the massive protests across the country since Trump’s inauguration in late January. I think he is behind it. I also think it’s politics, that’s the way it is,” Trump replied in the clip released on Monday night.
By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, -- Doctor Art Ulene, who challenged TODAY Show audiences to get healthy for 23 years, is now inviting people over 50 to “get high” with him—19,341 feet high to be precise. The 80-yearold physician has joined forces with World Wide Trekking to lead adventure treks specially designed for older people. Their first group heads for the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro on July 11, 2017, and four treks to peaks around the world are scheduled for 2018. “Age is not a barrier to climbing mountains,” Ulene proclaims. He should know. Five years ago, he and his wife celebrated his 75th birthday at the summit of Kilimanjaro, and they’ll be celebrating his 81st birthday there in July. “If the trek is designed properly,” he says, “almost anyone in good physical condition can make it to this summit.”
What’s different about Ulene’s trek for seniors? Ten nights on the mountain instead of the usual five, so daily hikes are shorter. A local guide for every two guests, so trekkers can hike at their own pace. The most unusual feature: an Expedition Doctor who will watch over Ulene’s guests every step of the way. On Kilimanjaro, that role will be filled by Dr. Aaron Waxman, a Harvard Medical School professor and pulmonary specialist. “We underestimate the physical potential of older people,” the 60-year-old Waxman says. “It’s amazing how far and how high we can go safely if we move at a slower pace and leave more time for acclimatization to altitude.” Ulene’s treks will be operated by World Wide Trekking, an international adventure company based in Salt Lake City. HOROSCOPES ARIES
You begin to look at your professional and social self, abilities and successes in different and more powerful ways. This will have a long time affect in your life. People around you also see a difference. A capacity of healing comes forth and you achieve what you have hoped and wished and worked hard for. You will be responsible for the collective transformation of the world at some time. For now, you’re in training.
TAURUS New ideas, philosophies, journeys, cultures all become important. Some Taureans consider moving to a simpler way of life. Some consider a monastery. And others to a place of higher learning. Some become teachers and professors of philosophies that support the new culture and civilization and future communities. Step into your visions. They are your future.
GEMINI It is good to make a study of life’s transitions, of death, the bardos, rebirth, reincarnation and all that occurs when we have completed a life on Earth. Understanding life after death has a lasting and hopeful effect on daily lives. Realizing there actually is no death, but only a continuation of life in a different realm. A good book to review

EXCLUSIVE: Progress on Kimpton Hotel By Kitty Alvarado Palm Springs, CA -The Rowan Hotel by Kimpton in Downtown Palm Springs is on schedule. The construction site is busy and noisy. Wessman Development manager Octavio Fernandez says there are workers there round the clock, rain or shine. Fernandez has been with Wessman for over 25 years. When you step into what will be the lobby you can’t miss the large metal beam that looks suspended in midair. “We call it the grand staircase that connects the lobby with the second level meeting space,” says Fernandez, and by the looks of the beam alone it will be grand. It takes a little imagination to envision the completed,
six story, 150 plus room hotel. But the bones are there for the creative touches. “Design features are going to have different colors of stain glass insert to provide some privacy for the cafe,” says Fernandez. The 4800 square foot banquet rooms are large with extensive views of downtown and the mountains and Fernandez says it has options, “This room is divisible with dividers so we can have one or two different types of functions going on simultaneously.” The rooms are about 70 percent done. The drapes and tile floors are in, bathrooms have large showers and will be accented with marble. Fernandez says only the best materials are being used,
“Expense is not one thing that Mr. Wessman has spared here.” But it’s the rooftop that promises to be everything a Palm Springs paradise should be, starting with the dining area with its endless views and the rooftop pool is amazing even in its unfinished state. “All here, they’re private cabanas and you’ve got more cabanas over there, they’ve got ceiling fans, they’ve got heaters for the winter time, partitions for privacy all rigged for sound, “ says Fernandez adding the pool will have its own bar. The Weather Network Delivers its Spring Forecast Slow start to spring for some and active severe weather season for others
The Weather Network’s forecast for the months of March, April and May. (CNW Group/The Weather Network) By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, - The Weather Network’s team of meteorologists have just released their spring forecast for the months of March, April and May. Spring weather is already off to a quick start east of the Rockies. However, winter weather will make a comeback at times across many regions. The clash of the seasons,
along with a very warm Gulf of Mexico will contribute to the most active severe weather season since 2011. Overall, much of the eastern and southern US can expect above normal temperatures to dominate the spring season. However, the warm weather in combination with a trend towards drier weather during late spring may exacerbate the existing dry
By Desert Star Staff LINCOLN, Neb. — A Nebraska state senator is taking another run at legislation to protect mountain lions. The Natural Resources Committee heard testimony last week on Legislative Bill 448, which would remove provisions related to the hunting of mountain lions from the Game Law. It’s the fourth time Sen. Ernie Chambers has introduced the bill, after failed attempts in the last three sessions. He believes hunting mountain lions is cruel and barbaric. James Cavanaugh, counsel for the Sierra Club in Nebraska, said he agrees, pointing out that the animals are not considered a food source and most avoid humans. “There’s no real compelling reason to hunt them, and there are many compelling reasons not to,” Cavanaugh said. “In addition to their tiny, endangered population, they’re a noble, beautiful animal and add to our healthy ecosystem’s functioning.” Experts estimate only between 15 and 22 mountain lions live in Nebraska, mainly in the Pine Ridge region. Hunting them was made
legal in 2012 after there were several reported sightings, and a limited hunting season was held in 2014. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has been researching the mountain lion population and contends the hunt helps regulate the animal’s population. But Cavanaugh said he believes nature should be allowed to take its course. He explaned that, as an apex predator, mountain lions serve an important function by keeping the wild food chain in check. “Their primary diet consists of other wild animals, including deer and antelope and elk, raccoons, all the way down to field mice,” Cavanaugh said. “They don’t normally prey on a domesticated animal.” Some farmers, ranchers and other residents have expressed concerns about mountain lions as a potential threat to humans, cattle and pets. But opponents of the hunt point out that there has never been a documented case of a mountain lion attack on a human in Nebraska. Cavanaugh noted that the top three animals that have been responsible for harming humans in the state are cattle, horses and dogs

conditions heading towards summer. In contrast, a wet spring is expected across the north central US. colder weather will be most persistent across the Pacific Northwest. The northern third of the country will have to wait until the second half of spring for persistent warmth, which is typical for this region. “One of the keys to seasonal forecasts is looking back to years in the past that had similar weather and ocean temperature patterns. In particular, we look to the tropical Pacific Ocean, which is one of our primary drivers of weather patterns around the world. The pattern heading into this spring is unlike anything that we’ve seen during the past 75 years of record keeping,” said Chris Scott, Chief Meteorologist with The Weather Network. “It is evident that another significant El Niño event is developing. Such a quick return to El Niño after a brief and weak La Niña, and just a year after one of the strongest El Niño events on record, leaves us with a unique global pattern.” El Niño, characterized by warmer than normal Equatorial Pacific Ocean waters and La Niña, cooler than normal waters in the same area are
major factors in the overall global weather pattern, no matter the season. The most recent El Niño in 2016 was one of the strongest on record and all indications are pointing to another developing El Niño. This provides for a season with heightened uncertainties since effects from the previous El Niño continue to linger. Looking ahead to the summer months, temperatures are forecast to be above normal for most of the country. Overall, the Atlantic hurricane season is expected to produce fewer storms than many recent years. However, much warmer than normal ocean water temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico and along the Eastern Seaboard elevates the threat for any storm that does makes landfall to be highly impactful. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The ‘boys’ won Tony Awards in the 80s with such gay-themed shows as “Torch Song Trilogy and nabbed another with the musical “La Cage aux Folles “(1983), and yet another, with the blockbuster musical hit “Kinky Boots” in 2013; all from the creative brain of Harvey Fierstein. Now it’s the ‘girls’ turn in the first decade of the 21st century to begin collecting Tony Awards. First and foremost is the success of the 2015 Tony Award winner “Fun Home”, based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, with music by Jeanine Tesori and lyrics and book by Lisa Kron. The musical’s national tour production, now on the stage of The Ahmanson Theatre, is an eye-opening and somewhat of a ground-
breaking production, in that it tells the story of a gay young woman’s sexual awakening in a troubled Pennsylvania family. American families have been dealing with gay children not knowing how to “come out” to their parents or society in general, for years. For me, “Fun Home” should be required reading or viewing for all parents, relatives, and education professionals who interact with students. I’m no health professional or an academic, but it appears to me that “Fun Home”, comes across as a pretty good vehicle for a ‘Sexual Identity Course 101’, help aid. The intriguing and compelling story, brilliantly directed by Sam Gold, becomes all the more revealing when everyone has an opportunity to view, up close and personal (even in a theatre setting) the emotions of young people who do not understand what is happening inside their bodies, and who only know that they

Her impressive oversized posters, some nearly five feet high, capture the essence of exotic travel from Cairo to Capri, when the jet age was in its infancy. Antique Galleries also displays original furnishings from the midcentury, such as a ten-piece sectional divan and a Sputnik Chandelier, which could have had a stint in a classic movie set from the mid 1950s. As Ms. Westbrook departed Palm Springs after three days of delving into “the modernism magic” she couldn’t help but be impressed. While driving by the windmills, Joshua Trees and countless cacti she

The biggest fear of course, is the fear of rejection and stigmatization on the part of their parents and friends. Without some guidance that is a very scary prospect indeed. Director Gold cleverly employs cinema techniques in the telling of the “Fun Home” story. Through flashbacks and flash-forwards, Kate Shindle narrates for the audience the character of Alison (Alison Bechdal’s alterego). We see her at various stages in her life: Small Alison, an elementary student wonderfully played and sung by Alessandra Baldacchino, and Medium Alison, an astonishing Abby Corrigan, as a high-school senior entering college, who, when she meets classmate Joan (played by Karen Eilbacher), she falls head over heels and has an epiphany as to her sexuality. When Alison in flashback discusses her home life growing up, we meet her Father Bruce, (Robert Petkoff in a finely judged performance), a closeted gay March 1, 2017
man who loves his wife Helen (steadfastly and knowingly played by Susan Moniz) and his three children: Alison, John (Lennon Nate Hammond) and Christian (Pierson Salvador), but handyman Roy (Robert Hager) also has Bruce’s attention. The story that takes place on the Ahmanson stage, and I’m guessing here, is probably not that much different from what takes place in the homes of families all over the world. Despite the emotional content of the story, “Fun Home”, is after all, a winning musical with singing and dancing, and lots of light comedy moments. The beauty of the production lies in the compelling and poignant performances of the cast. The opening night audience was definitely on the wavelength of Alison Bechdel, Jeanine Tesori, and Lisa Kron. Every nuanced scene and innuendo that the straight audience couldn’t decode, brought knowing smiles and on-the-nose laughter from those in the audience as having ‘been there, done that’ too.
Director Gold’s staging of his three ‘Alisons’ is somewhat analogous to cinema’s ‘dream mode’, in that the characters can see themselves in a scene or sequence while the action in the story unfolds. It’s very effective and helps the audience to keep track of all the moving parts in the production in perspective. Gold’s creative team led by Scenic Designer David Zinn, who also designed the Costumes delivers the goods in both disciplines. The Lighting Design is created by Ben Stanton and the Sound Design by Kai Harada, along with Hair and Wig Designer Rick Caroto, complete the team. Music director Micha Young, along with Orchestrations by John Clancy and Music Coordination by Antoine Silverman and a nine-person orchestra, put the finishing touches on this splendid and entertaining production. “Fun Home” performs at The Ahmanson Theatre and runs through April 1, 2017.

sold where prizes were valued in the hundreds of dollars. The special guest was Ruth Smadar Nachshon from Israel with her dog Roxi. Ruth was a seeing person until she gave birth to her son and became sightless during labor, which threw her into a new and scary life of blindness. Her mother was blind, so she knew a bit about sightlessness Her Guide Dog gave her a new lease on her life and gave
her freedoms her mother did not have. Ruth gave a very emotional personal speech of her life her inspirational story and how she feels you should never give up and keep on going in life regardless of circumstances. Ruth said that the only time she feels blind is when she doesn’t have her dog by her side. Israel Guide Dogs for the Blind founder, Noach Braun, spoke and gave out the
awards to the two honorees. He said that to provide a dog for the blind takes nearly two years and costs $25,000 per dog and there is no expense to the blind person for their dog. There is a tremendous demand for guide dogs. Entertainment was provided by the beautiful and talented Soprano, Elisabetta Russo. Her final song was the National Anthem that had everyone on their feet singing along.

In 1999, Shores wrote and directed the film adaption of Sordid Lives starring Beau Bridges, Delta Burke, Olivia Newton-John, Bonnie Bedelia, Leslie Jordan and Beth Grant, along with most of the cast from the play. The movie became a cult phenomenon taking in nearly $2 million in its eight-theatre limited release. The movie won six Best Feature and 13 Audience Awards at film festivals. In 2002, Twentieth Century Fox released the DVD/ Video, which has now sold over 300,000 units. The film was re-released by Wolfe Video in 2014. more Sordid Lives. Many of my LGBTQ fans, of all ages, have come out to their folks by showing them Sordid Lives because the humor helped them share their own story,” explains Shores. “I am excited to bring my characters up to July 2015 where they are hit with the reality of Texas having full equality. I wanted to contrast affirming churches and organizations like Faith In America with hypocritical bigotry that is still being spewed from pulpits represented by the ‘Anti-Equality Rally’ in the film.” “With the victory of marriage equality and the resulting backlash disguised as ‘religious freedom’ bills, our film exploring the impact of religious bigotry couldn’t come at a timelier moment in our history,” continues producer and star Emerson Collins. “Hard-fought LGBTQ rights won over the
past eight years now hang in the balance with the new presidential administration and conservative state legislatures across the country preparing to target the LGBTQ community.” As the original film dealt with coming out in a conservative Southern world, A Very Sordid Wedding explores the questions, bigotry and the fallout of what happens when gay marriage comes to communities and families that are not quite ready to accept it. These issues are explored with Del Shores’ trademark approach to using comedy and his much beloved Sordid Lives characters to deal with these important current social issues and the very real process of accepting your family for who they are instead of who you want them to be.

Jewish centers cope with bomb threats; graves vandalized By Michael Rubinkam Jewish centers and schools across the nation coped with another wave of bomb threats Monday as officials in Philadelphia made plans to repair and restore hundreds of vandalized headstones at a Jewish cemetery. Jewish Community Centers and day schools in at least a dozen states received threats, according to the JCC Association of North America. No bombs were found. All 21 buildings - 13 community centers and eight schools - were cleared by Monday afternoon and had resumed normal operations, the association said. It was the fifth round of bomb threats against Jewish institutions since January, prompting outrage and exasperation among Jewish leaders as well as calls for an aggressive federal response to put a stop to it. “The Justice Department, Homeland Security, the FBI, and the White House, alongside Congress and local officials, must speak out - and speak out forcefully - against this scourge of anti-Semitism impacting communities across the country,” said David Posner, an official with JCC Association of North America. “Members of our community must see swift and concerted action from federal officials to identify and capture the perpetrator or perpetrators who are trying to instill anxiety and fear in our communities.” The FBI and the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division are probing the threats. Attorney General Jeff Sessions called the vandalism and bomb threats serious, unacceptable behavior and said the department will
“do what it can to assist in pushing back ... and prosecuting anybody that we can prove to be a part of it.” “We are a nation that is a diverse constituency, and we don’t need these kind of activities,” Sessions said. In Philadelphia, police investigated what they called an “abominable crime” after several hundred headstones were damaged during the weekend at Mount Carmel Cemetery, a Jewish cemetery dating to the late 1800s, said Steven Rosenberg, chief marketing officer of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. Police said the vandalism appeared to be targeted at the Jewish community, though they cautioned they had not confirmed the motive. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said authorities were doing everything possible to find those “who desecrated this final resting place.” “I’m hoping it was maybe just some drunk kids,” said Aaron Mallin, who discovered the damage during a visit to his father’s grave. “But the fact that there’s so many, it leads one to think it could have been targeted,” he told WPVI-TV. The vandalism comes less than a week after a Jewish cemetery in suburban St. Louis was targeted. More than 150 headstones there were damaged, many of them tipped over. Both acts of vandalism spurred offers of help. The Philadelphia Building & Construction Trades Council, an umbrella group for more than 50 union locals that work in the construction industry, offered to repair the damage at Mount Carmel free of charge, calling it a “cowardly act of anti-Semitism that cannot
(Michael Bryant/The Philadelphia Inquirer via AP). Northeast Philadelphia Police Detective Timothy McIntyre, center, dusts for fingerprints one of the headstones that were knocked down be tolerated.” A community cleanup organized by the Jewish Federation was to begin Tuesday with as many as 50 volunteers per hour. And in Missouri, a Muslim crowdfunding effort to support the vandalized Jewish cemetery near St. Louis had raised more than $136,000 by Monday, with organizers announcing they would use some of the money for the Philadelphia cemetery. Monday’s bomb threats caused no physical damage but were no less worrisome. “There’s plenty of people who are scared,” said Rosenberg, who denounced the hoaxsters as “an embarrassment to civilized society.” Some 200 people were evacuated from a Jewish Community Center in York, Pennsylvania, after a caller told the front desk there was a bomb in the building, said
Melissa Plotkin, the York JCC’s director of community engagement and diversity. Police entered the building and cleared it, she said. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, who has long ties to the York center, having served on its board, called the bomb threats and cemetery vandalism reprehensible. “These acts are cowardly and disturbing,” Wolf told reporters in a conference call Monday. “We must find those responsible and hold them accountable for these hate crimes.” Jewish centers and schools in Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Virginia also were threatened, according to the JCC Association of North America. Since January, the group has tracked a total
of 90 incidents in 30 states and Canada. Paul Goldenberg, director of the Secure Community Network, a nonprofit founded by several national Jewish groups to bolster security in the Jewish community, said Jewish Community Centers and other Jewish institutions have extensive security protocols in place. After dealing with Monday’s threats, he said, the “Jewish community is back in business.” Rubinkam reported from northeastern Pennsylvania. Associated Press writers Larry Rosenthal in Philadelphia; Eric Tucker in Washington, D.C.; Jim Salter in St. Louis; Marc Levy and Mark Scolforo in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Michelle R. Smith in Providence, Rhode Island; and Emery P. Dalesio in Raleigh, North Carolina, contributed to this report. Source: KMIR/AP
‘It’s so unlikely’: Duo behind Oscars fail tempted fate in recent interview
By Desert Star Staff In what can only be described as a strange coincidence, the two people responsible for the biggest Oscar fail in history recently gave an interview discussing www.desertstarweekly.com
what would happen if the wrong winner was announced at the awards. In a prophetic interview with the Huffington Post days before the ceremony, two Price Waterhouse
Cooper employees, who are the only people to know the results of the Oscars in advance, admitted they were unaware of the procedure if the wrong name was called out at the awards. Martha Ruiz, a tax adviser and Brian Cullinan, an accountant and chair of PwC’s US board, oversee the counting procedures and possess the winners’ list long before the winners are announced. “We would make sure that the correct person was known very quickly,” Cullinan said. “Whether that entails stopping the show, us walking onstage, us signaling to the stage manager — that’s really a game-time decision, if something like that were to happen.” “Again, it’s so unlikely,” he added. March 1, 2017
Once, you jinx an event with such a level of confidence, however, a mistake is always likely to happen. And, in this case, reverberate around the globe. Roll around the Oscars. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway present the Best Picture award to ‘La La Land’, instead of the actual winner, ‘Moonlight’, after seeing, ‘Emma Stone, La La Land,’ written on the card. To make matters more embarrassing, the PwC pair had also detailed in the earlier interview the process they undertake to ensure no mistakes are made. “It’s him checking me and me checking him, and we do it multiple times against each other to make sure that when we leave and are ultimately handing the envelopes to someone, we’re very confident
they’re getting the right envelopes and the contents in them are accurate,” Ruiz said. PwC has apologized for the mistake in a statement, which has been met with a high dose of online trolling. We sincerely apologize to ‘Moonlight’, ‘La La Land’, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture,” the statement said. “The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.”

MUSIC Icons aim high on new releases BY ROBERT KINSLER
Discerning listeners who love top-tier songwriting performed by engaging artists will want to get a listen to the latest album releases from singer-songwriter Colin Hay, fingerstyle guitarist Laurence Juber, alt-country rockers Old 97’s and tunesmith Livingston Taylor. Artist: Colin Hay Title: Fierce Mercy (Compass Records) You might like if you enjoy: Colin Hay, Bruce Cockburn, Tell me more: Colin Hay has an innate ability to write and perform songs that entice musically while effortlessly forcing the listener to think. On his latest masterwork “Fierce Mercy,” the acclaimed singer-songwriter uses a batch of original songs (several co-written with Michael Georgiades) that explore life from the insightful perspective that the majority of life’s days are in the rear view mirror. But Hay’s “Fierce Mercy” is no downbeat lament; there is a rich tapestry of both sonic and lyrical textures. The disc’s soundscape blends folk-rock, jazz, Americana and more while the richly-drawn lyrics aim
at the everyday triumphs and tragedies that define people’s lives. “A Thousand Million Reasons” is a gorgeous and subtle song that taps into the powerful genesis of love. “She Was the Love of Mine” finds the singer celebrating the life of his late mother. “Frozen Fields of Snow” is a deeply-affecting song written by Hay that looks at the life of a military veteran outside the narrow confines of a battlefield tale. The deluxe edition of “Fierce Mercy” includes three outstanding bonus tracks providing even more great reasons to get a wonderful album. Information: ColinHay.com.
compositions (including two by George Harrison). There are uptempo takes (“She Loves You,” “Ticket to Ride”), elegiac sorties (“And Your Bird Can Sing,” “Day Tripper,” “And I Love Her”) and beautiful arrangements that dazzle (“Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” “I’ll Follow the Sun”). Several of the more interesting renderings on the collection include the ambitious “Hey Bulldog” and playful “Honey Pie.” Information: LaurenceJuber.com.
Artist: Laurence Juber Title: LJ Can’t Stop Playing The Beatles! (HoLoGram Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles, Muriel Anderson, Pete Huttlinger Tell me more: On the aptly-titled “LJ Can’t Stop Playing The Beatles!” twotime Grammy winning guitarist Laurence Juber thankfully delivers on the promise of the disc’s title with 14 articulate and fully-realized acoustic arrangements of Fab Four
Artist: Old 97’s Title: Graveyard Whistling (ATO Records) You might like if you enjoy: Rhett Miller, Wilco, Supersuckers Tell me more: On their newly-released album “Graveyard Whistling,” the Old 97’s unleash a batch of potent songs that mine well-traveled trails celebrating romance, life in small towns, the thrill of playing music and the joys of having a good drink. Since emerging in Dallas, Texas in 1993, the quartet has recorded a slew of great albums filled with memorable songs that stand the test of time; that
things are being done,” he said. According to McCabe, the nation has been through the most tumultuous, unpredictable and stressful election of our times, and there’s more uncertainty and political turmoil now than in a long time. He says it’s time for people to take back their government on the state and national level. He’s convinced a big part of the problem is that ordinary “blue-jeans folks” don’t run for public office anymore, and says that has to change. “We’ve got to get regular people to start doing the things that citizens need to do, and that most of us are afraid to do, and most of us are really uncomfortable doing,” McCabe said. “But we’ve got to do that, or else the system belongs to
professional politicians who are feathering their own nests.” Last year, Blue Jean Nation held a similar event that attracted people from every part of the state. McCabe predicts this Saturday’s gathering will draw twice as many people. He says this kind of change involves a long process, but is confident it’s underway. “We’re going through a time where people have become very disenchanted with what the political establishment has done,” he noted. “They’re looking for ways to shake up the system and I think that’s going to play out over the course of years – not months, but years and perhaps even decades.” The gathering is open to
formula is firmly intact on the 11-track “Graveyard Whistling.” There are rollicking alt-country rockers such as the confessional “Good With God” and the raucous “Drinkin’ Song.” The Old 97’s can disarm with the most lovely of songs, as evidenced by the beautiful “Bad Luck Charm” with singer Rhett Miller’s reflective delivery and the band’s nuanced performance; on “All Who Wander” the band explores similar sonic territory with bona fide melodic prowess. The group also makes a joyful detour on the Celtic-flavored “Irish Whiskey Pretty Girls.” Information: old97s.com. Artist: Livingston Taylor Title: Safe Home (Chesky Records) You might like if you enjoy: Randy Newman, James Taylor Tell me more: It’s impressive that singersongwriter Livingston Taylor’s new album “Safe Home” was recorded as part of the Chesky Binaural + Series, a cutting-edge process that finds albums recorded with a single microphone while
ultimately providing listeners with an expansive and multidimensional recording. The jazz-styled original “I Must Be Doing Something Right” has the wonderful feel of a timeless American Standard, and Taylor’s warm baritone delivers the song with authentic warmth. Taylor is surrounded by a top-flight group of musicians on the album, including Shelly Berg (piano), David Finck (bass), Bashiri Johnson (percussion) and Chelsea Berry (vocals). There are also a number of great reworkings of classic material on the disc; a completely novel take on the Beatles’ “Penny Lane” is among the memorable songs covered. And although there have been countless versions of composer Harold Arlen and lyricist E.Y. Harburg’s “Over the Rainbow,” the version here (sung by Chelsea Berry and Taylor as a duet) is eloquently and artistically introduced by a reworked version of “Merry Old Land Of Oz” (another great song introduced in the enduring 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz”). Grassroots Group Wants to Mobilize “Blue-Jeans Folks” By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. – We’re living in mad times, says the founder of the nonpartisan grassroots group Blue Jean Nation. The group hosts an event in Waupun on Sat., March 4, to help people think aloud about how to respond. Blue Jean Nation founder, Mike McCabe, says in part, March Forth on March Fourth is a response to the political marches that have taken place since the election of President Donald Trump. But McCabe doesn’t want to have that kind of march. “What we’re asking people to do is ‘march’ back into the political process - to march into elections, to march into political parties, and to shake them up and change the way

growing community college in the entire state. But the college’s size might
have some drawbacks, as one of their students, Frank Alcaraz says, “it’s common here to hear that one of my classes got too full and had to get wait-listed and they would have to wait until next semester, which is unfortunate for some.” Student’s main concern is to get into the classes they need in order to finish on time. And with a bond measure passed by taxpayers on November, C.O.D. will get the funds they need to grow. “Five-hundred-andseventy-seven-million-dollars to be able to expand our campus offerings across the Coachella Valley and so what we are doing now is thinking about our academic curriculum should look like for the next five years,” says Pamela Ralston, vice
president for student learning. The College of the Desert has campuses in the west and east valley, however not every class is offered on all campuses. Sandra Morayla says she would like to take some of the classes offered in the Mecca campus, but the distance is too much. “We don’t have many cultural studies and being that we are in the Coachella Valley and it’s very diverse, I would like to see more of that, they do have a Chicano study but it’s all the way in mecca, so it’s kind of far to get there,” says Morayla. The administration at College of the Desert wants to hear from you, they will be holding community forums on Wednesday at the Indio campus and on Thursday at the Palm Desert campus to get your feedback on areas you would like to see them grow. find potential cost-savings for your prescription medications under your Part D coverage. Think Generic: When possible, consider using a less expensive prescription drug brand or generic. These alternatives typically carry the same formulas at a reduced cost, saving patients
substantially over time. Preferred Pharmacies: Verify whether your plan has preferred pharmacies -- which are pharmacies that have an agreement with a Part D plan to charge less than a standard network pharmacy. For example, Walgreens, which is a preferred pharmacy for many of the nation’s top plans, can help lower the cost of your copays, even to $0 in the case of Tier 1 generics on certain plans. “Depending on the design of your plan, coverage, and prescription drugs, you can pay higher copays at one pharmacy in comparison to another if your pharmacy is not in your plan’s preferred network! So, choosing the right pharmacy is definitely important,” says Mariah Moon, the blogger behind “The Simple Parent,” who recently wrote about helping her mother research her options for lowering her drug costs as part of the #PartDAtWalgreens campaign.
90-Day Refills: “My pharmacist told me that many physicians are willing to write 90-day prescriptions for many of the medications that seniors are often prescribed. This not only saves time by requiring fewer trips to the pharmacy, but also may save copay costs,” says Shelley Webb, a registered nurse and founder of “The Intentional Caregiver,” who cared for her father in her home for four years and was recently sponsored by Walgreens to share tips about saving on prescription costs with her readers. Medicare beneficiaries seeking help navigating prescription drug costs can find free resources at walgreens.com/topic/ pharmacy/medicarepartd. If you didn’t review your plan before renewing, it’s not too late to become a savvy consumer and learn more. Doing so can help you save money. StatePoint
3 Ways Seniors Can Save on Prescriptions This Year
By Desert Star Staff If you signed up for a new Medicare plan during Open Enrollment, it’s important to understand how your prescription drug costs may be affected. Even if you did nothing to alter your coverage, some features of your plan may have changed for 2017. Unfortunately, almost
one-in-five Medicare beneficiaries don’t have a good understanding of their plan, and a good portion have some misconceptions about copays, according to a recent survey by Walgreens. Here are three easy steps to help you make the most of your benefits and
Trump’s first address to lay out ‘bold agenda’
The opposition Democrats have chosen undocumented immigrant Astrid Silva to deliver the party’s response in Spanish. In his first address to Congress, President Donald Trump is expected to lay out a “bold agenda” to unite the country, reform healthcare and secure the borders. Democrats are responding by inviting immigrants, including some who are in the US illegally. Trump will be speaking to the nation and members of Congress at the invitation of House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin), who announced last week that the address was arranged to bring the country together. The speech is scheduled to be delivered from the US Capitol beginning at 9:00pm EST on Tuesday. “With this unified Republican government, we have a unique opportunity to deliver results to the American people,” said Ryan, adding “this will be an opportunity for the people and their representatives to hear directly from our new President about his vision and our shared agenda.” In a press briefing on Monday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the president will use the speech to refocus the American public on his policy priorities, and outline his vision for the country over the next four years. Spicer says Trump will focus on his “bold agenda,” which includes tax reform, a “patient-centered alternative” to the Affordable Care Act, and rebuilding America’s military. Trump will also talk about some of his administration’s key accomplishments so far, as well as his trade policies and plans for dealing with Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL). The president’s press secretary also noted that Trump views these issues as “shared American values, regardless of party,” and said the president will invite Americans of “all backgrounds to come together in the service of a stronger and

brighter future for our nation.” The speech comes after Trump’s first month in office, in which he has promised to deport illegal immigrants back to Mexico and signed an executive order banning immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East. The opposition Democrats have chosen undocumented immigrant Astrid Silva to deliver the party’s response in Spanish, while former Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear delivers the response in English. Several Democratic lawmakers have also announced they would be inviting immigrants as guests to the event. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinios) has invited Aaima Sayed as his guest. Sayed, who was brought to this country when she was just three years old, is an undocumented immigrant who can only stay in the country thanks to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program enacted by President
Barack Obama in 2012. She is now a third-year medical student at Loyola University. “Would the United States be better off if Aaima is deported to Pakistan, where she hasn’t lived since she was a toddler, instead of using her talent as a physician to help low-income Americans? The answer is clear,” Durbin said in a statement quoted by Politico. “I am honored to host this gifted young medical student as my guest. I hope her presence reminds President Trump what’s at stake in the debate over DACA: the lives of more than 750,000 innocent young people and the wellbeing of entire communities.” Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez (D-New York) tweeted that her guest will be Hameed Darweesh, an Iraqi interpreter who worked for the US army for a decade, but was detained at JFK International Airport following Trump’s travel ban in January. Darweesh is also one of the lead plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging Trump’s
immigration ban alleging that it violates immigrants’ Fifth Amendment procedural and substantive due process rights. In a press release, Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinois) said his guest would be Fidaa Elaydi, a Muslim immigration attorney and daughter of Palestinian refugees. Elaydi works with immigrants that are vulnerable to Trump’s travel ban. “I want Trump to see the face of a woman, the face of a Muslim, and the face of someone whose family has enriched and contributed to this country despite starting out as refugees,” Gutierrez said, adding “Trump needs to know that real people are hurt by his policies and Ms. Elaydi can make that point in so many ways. I am looking forward to it.” Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released a statement saying she was inviting Banah Al-Hanfy, a young Iraqi woman whose father served as an interpreter for the US military. Trump’s travel ban also stopped Al-Hanfy from boarding a flight from Baghdad to Maine, separating her from the rest of her family. “I hope the President will make clear tomorrow evening that his new immigration orders will not attack people who are coming to our nation legally simply because of their religion or country of origin,” Pingree wrote, adding “I also hope Banah will hear President Trump express gratitude for those who’ve served our military as her father did.” In total, more than a half a dozen Democrats from the House and Senate are inviting undocumented immigrants who are currently protected under the DACA program, including Ami Bera (D-California), Jared Polis (D-Colorado), Jerrold Nadler (D-New York), Mark Pocan (D-Wisconsin), Nanette Barragan (D-California), and Lou Correa (D-California).

“Zoot Suit” revival returns to its birthplace: The Mark Taper Forum
L-R: Jeanine Mason, Daniel Valdez, Rose Portillo and Tiffany Dupont in the revival of “Zoot Suit.”
L-R: (Tiffany Dupont, partially obscured), Jeanine Mason, Demian Bichir, Matias Ponce, Daniel Valdez and Rose Portillo in “Zoot Suit.”
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Seventyfive years ago a murder was committed in Los Angeles in an area known as the ‘Sleepy Lagoon reservoir’. Four young Latino men were charged with the crime of murder, and the ensuing, highly controversial trial introduced a new word into the main-stream American lexicon – “Pachuco”. In 1977, playwright/ director Luis Valdez, brought his play “Zoot Suit” to Gordon Davidson, the Artistic Director of the Mark Taper Forum with the hope that one of the country’s most prestigious Regional Theatres would produce his controversial story of social injustice and police brutality toward Latino’s in the city of Angels. And he wanted to do it with a cast of mostly Latino performers. Not only did Davidson agree to produce the play, he helped guide it through development stages giving director Valdez full support and resources of the Mark Taper Forum. Davidson’s belief and Valdez’s powerful play helped change the creative theatrical climate of Los Angeles. Not only did it open the door of diversity in casting, it made edgier and non-traditional subject matter plays acceptable; solidifying the reputation of the Mark Taper Forum as a welcoming place for new work by America’s emerging playwrights. The Taper’s revival musical production, now onstage of “Zoot Suit”, is faithful to Valdez’s original story. This production has had a little tweaking by playwright-director Valdez here and there. I saw the original production in 1978, starring Edward James Olmos as the narrator/guide El Pachuco, It was an astonishing performance and production. Actors Daniel Valdez who
Reyna, delivers a potent performance of a cynical man when it comes to his view of society, and rightly so. He is brutalized both by his culture in the barrios, and in the treatment of his brothers by the ‘gringos’ who control the power levers in his world. While viewing the police vs. the pachuco scenes, I felt the obvious bias

portrays Henrique Reyna and Rose Portillo who plays Delores Reyna in the 2017 production, were both in the original 1978 show. Daniel Valdez is also the Music Director for the 2017 production. The power of Valdez’s story and the potent dialogue of the original show is still intact and still affecting. The stage is splashed in colorful costumes of Costume Designer Ann Closs-Farley, especially in her Pachuco costumes sported by Henry and El Pachuco right down to the long single feathers in their hats and their three foot long pocket chains. The cultural heat and moves of the barrio dancers under the direction choreographer Maria Torres heightens the excitement and energy of the entire production. Christopher Acebo’s spacious set provides all the room required by director Valdez to bring his 1940’s musical of barrio life along with five songs composed by the late great Lalo Guerrero. Guerrero was considered to be the father of Chicano music. “Zoot Suit” also features the music of Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Felipe Valdes Leal, Daniel Valdez, and Jorge Negrete. Even though the story is based on actual events, there are echoes of gang warfare moments from “West Side Story” and a taste of family warfare as in “Romeo and Juliet”. Alas, it would appear this tired old world hasn’t learned very much from our forebears when it comes to tolerance and understanding. As a theatrical piece, however, “Zoot Suit” still has the goods to move an audience emotionally and intellectually to appreciate our diversity by listening to our better angels; thanks to the skill of this outstanding cast of 25 solid, actors, led by a mesmerizing Demian Bischir, as El Pachuco, ‘a messenger’ who embodies both good and bad spirits. Matias Ponce as Henry
of the justice system could have been toned down a bit. We get it and seeing it through the lens of 40 years later, too much cruelty can be offputting to some, regardless of its veracity. Many times, less can make a more powerful and convincing statement. Henry’s one bright spot in life is his love for his girlfriend
Della, appealingly played by Jeanine Mason. When the rumble in the Sleepy Lagoon area goes sideways and a rival gang member is killed, Henry, and his three compadres are caught up and sacrificed on the expediency alter of political and police department agendas. Then as now, instilling fear (in “Zoot Suit” it’s the ‘Pachuco’ gangs), is a useful tool and a necessary component in maintaining control by governments worldwide. In the jail and courtroom sequences Brian Abraham as George Shearer and Tiffany Dupont as Alice Bloomfield, Henry’s attorneys respectively, display their frustration in fighting a system where one can easily compare barrio life to the old Jim Crow rules of down south before the Civil Rights movement became law. This triumphant production has been taken to the hearts of 2017 audiences, as was the 1978 production. It has been extended three times to accommodate the clamor for tickets. “Zoot Suit”, at the Ahmanson Theatre, now runs through April 2, 2017. Don’t Miss It!
