Two new champions were crowned at the 2018 BNP Paribas Open on Sunday: Naomi Osaka and Juan Martin del Potro. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The BNP Paribas Open had one of the most exciting finishes to date. The fans got their monies worth on Sunday. It was a hard-fought battle between Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro. It was one of those matches for the history books. The game lasted for a long time. Del Potro won the first match. The second

was a back and forth battle that ended in a tiebreaker. It went first to del Potro and then back to Federer who finally won that tiebreaker. The fans went wild as most of the people in the filled stadium were Federer fans. The third and final match was another exciting, on the edge of your seat, game. Fans would yell after Federer

made a huge shot and then the whole stadium would be completely quiet. Can you imagine thousands of people not saying a word during play? Roger Federer had his chance to win several times but always came up short. Double faults were his downfall. The match again came to a tiebreaker. This time Federer was unable to make a comeback to win.

Del Potro was on the top of his game and came out a winner. He said he was still shaking when he spoke to the crowd at the trophy ceremony. The winner gets 1.3 million dollars, the same as the winner in the women’s match, which cannot be said in any other sport. The BNP Paribas Tennis Open is always full of surprises. This year is no exception

as many of the top seeds in Women and Doubles are not playing in the finals. Two 20-year-old women who are not well known are vying for the top spot, The 2018 BNP Paribas trophy. Venus and Serena Williams fell along with other prominent names Simona Halep, Caroline Continues on Page 11

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 29th Annual Desert Spirit was held on March 11th at the Heckmann Estate again this year. This is the Deserts Premier Gala to fight Cancer. The American Cancer Society’s event raised money for the fight against cancer in hopes of a cure. This event is one big party with top entertainment and 12 vendors with samples of their unique dishes. Each vendor had plates where guests could go from one vendor to another and hope they had room to taste it all. There was a massive bar as guests entered where they could get

refreshments of all kinds. Silent and Live auctions were held in between the entertainment and awards presentations Karen Devine served as Event Emcee, and Entertainment was provided by Dynamic Dave and New Sensations. There was a guest appearance by Michael Damian and an upbeat performance by the beautiful Bobbi Eakes. Event co-chairs were Sean and Tara Webb. Actor Sean Kanan and his lovely wife Michele were Honorary Chairs. The event honors several people. This year the Celebration of Life Honoree was Shay Moraga.

There was a posthumous Celebration of Life Honoree, Greg Polzin who lost his battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Actress Daisy Fuentes awarded her Husband, Richard Marx, the Spirit of the Mission Honor. Marx is a performer, singer, Songwriter, and Producer. He said that most of the time he is asked to sing at these benefits, and he did it again for this crowd. His songs have reached the top 10 and won many awards. He spoke of a young girl with bone cancer that showed him true heroism. He even built a room in her

a name at the hospital after she passed. He said she had such great courage and is still an inspiration to him. Chef Drew Davis from Catalan Restaurant was the host restauranteur. Other restaurants participating were Bistro, Coachella Valley Eatery, Haus of Poke, Cliffhouse. Pacifica, Rio Azul, Renaissance, Smokin Burgers, Two Bunch Palms, Kofofi, Over the Rainbow Desserts and LaQuinta High School Culinary Arts Institute. Each restaurant brought its own Chef to oversee the foods served. The Live auction was held

by Clint Bell, Auctioneer. Then The New Sensations Band got the guests up dancing. It takes many many sponsors to put on an affair of this size that brings people to the event. This is an outdoor gala with tables all over the lawn area. Guests mingled with friends and took photos of the giant backdrop. This is what they call a Fun Party that raises lots of money to eradicate Cancer. This disease hits all families and is a number one killer. It does not distinguish between the very young, the very old or in-between.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The BNP Paribas Tennis Open has had some fantastic struggles on the road to being the 2018 Winner. These tennis pros have shown why they are in the battle to win. It has been some nail-biting volleys and aces. It was a thrill to see Venus and Serena play against each other. Everyone knew that there would only be one winner in that match so Fans would not be able to see them together in the finals. I watched Sam Querry, and Milos Raonic play on

Friday. It was an on the edge of your seat match where both men have huge serves. It is hard to return serves that come at you in the 130 plus miles per hour range. San Querry made a valiant try, but Milos Raonic came out on top for the win to go on to the Semi-Finals on Saturday. Jean Martin Del Potro played against Philipp Kohlschreiber next. It too was a hard-fought battle between the two. Philipp played his heart out, and it was a very close match. Del Potro won

and advanced to the SemiFinals. That meant that Raonic and Del Potro would face each other for the semi-finals. Each hoped that would give them a chance at a win. The other matches too were thrilling. It’s fun to watch the video screen to find out if the ball was in or out. That call makes a huge difference sometimes in the score when it comes out different than the call by the linesmen. What started out on all eight courses came down to just Stadium one and two. The

crowds filled both stadiums. This Tennis Open has so much to offer. Autograph sessions had long lines. There was Entertainment every day and the areas for seating were always filled. People watched the video screens while eating or just resting. There was no need to have shade from the heat as the weather co-operated with cold temperatures, but there were a lot of areas to cool off if needed. There were foods of all varieties and vendors had a lot of memorabilia for

sale. Fans could get their photo taken with the trophy and so much more. The tent for getting tickets for 2019 was always busy, a testament to a great tournament. Venus Williams lost to D. Kasatkina, and S. Halep defeated N. Osaka. Venus Williams was hoping to get a win here at the BNP Paribas after beating her sister, Serena. Its always a little sad to see top names lose and look at the faces of fans not smiling.

Highest Scams Targeting Seniors are Romance Scams

By Janice Gough Seniors spend a lot of time on the computer and don’t always know how to stay safe. Shockingly, romance scams account for the highest number of internetfacilitated crimes and are on the rise. Every year more seniors become victims of “sweetheart scams.” Dating websites and social media are primary sites used, where thousands of victims get taken. The potential “date” could end up being a crime syndicate in Nigeria. Seniors are very

vulnerable to romance scams. The FBI and Federal Trade Commission logged 15,000 romance-scam complaints in 2016 in which victims were defrauded of about $230 million. Only 15% of fraud victims report the crime, so the extent of confidence fraud is likely even more significant. The most vulnerable are seniors living in nursing homes or apartments on their own. They are the primary targets for romance scammers because they don’t get out much and have a more trusting attitude. These schemes are also known Confidence fraud, wherein scammers prey on people of both genders, young or old, to defraud them of money and often life-saving. It happens year around; however, it is particularly prevalent around Valentine’s Day. “Sweetheart scammers” steal people’s personal and financial information to swindle them out of money. These con artists are sophisticated operations, many organizedcrime, based in countries such as Nigeria and North Korea. There are about 3,000 romance websites, including those specializing in cougar dating, interracial dating or prominent, beautiful women (BBW) dating. Approximately 1,000 new sites open every year. WWW.RomanceScams. org is a watchdog and dating site reviewer who reports these scams. The FBI says the States with the most romance scam victims are California, New York, Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania. One Texas woman lost $2 million to a sweetheart scammer. Scammers defraud trusting types in a host of ways, including bilking men with “mail-order brides.” Other con artists may lure victims into videotaping themselves nude on Skype, then blackmail them by threatening to post the tapes on Facebook. Targeting these victims is done by getting lists of people in nursing homes. They, also, have ways to get the names of financial advisors’ clientele. They check obituaries in the newspaper to find widowers and then reach out to them. The level of sophistication can get very complex. Widowers are a target for “Mail order” brides, who are being trafficked out of former Soviet countries, like Romania, Bulgaria, Uzbekistan, and sent here. Some people have paid $25,000 to $50,000 for a bride. The girl shows up; the guy spends the money. They go through a marriage ceremony and start living together. Then the girl runs off with whoever brought her over here, and the guy is out the money. Romance scams are not gendering specific. There are a lot of scammers

behind keyboards posing as young women going after older men. Rarely is the scammer the person they’re purporting to be. They create a synthetic, or fake, identity. Organized scammers often post the names of victims on what is called a suckers’ list and will share identification details with other criminals so that they can go after them in the future. There have been scams where a Senior was picked up (supposedly) by a family member, but it wasn’t a family member. There have been cases of kidnapping, in which the scammer tried to shake down the victim or family. It can get severe. The hardest aspect for seniors to learn is not to trust people they meet online. Scammers know that seniors have been brought up to trust and be respectful, which makes them an easier target. It’s better to trust and verify than to trust and believe. Many times, verification is not made, because the relationship is kept secret. Even after they’ve been scammed, they’re too embarrassed to talk about or report it. One should always get a second opinion about the contact you have made. Ask a friend or your, financial advisor, who can help you validate if that the person is legit. Some contributing factors are lack of technology competence and savvy. They may feel that it is okay to send their personal identity information, address, phone number, or club they belong, to someone and even post it on their Facebook page. Once that information out there, there’s no control over it, and it can go everywhere. These scammers are hard to track because there’s more sophistication behind them compared to about five years ago. Identity theft cases reported to the FBI involve significant scamming operations in Nigeria, North Korea, China, and Russia. Some of it is organized crime, some supportive and sponsored by governments. By targeting thousands of people at the same time, March 21, 2018

if they get caught, they move on. They’ll open a website and then shut it down making it very hard to track when the site is up for a short time. They have large call centers where people are dialing out or using computers that are even more sophisticated than some of the legitimate call centers in the United States. It involves romance scams, stolen credit cards, and drug sales because some of the organizations are engaged in an illicit activity of multiple lines of fraud, and they keep moving around. Anytime someone wants to make a significant life event change, which was created by an online relationship, it should be questioned. Non-reputable sites have many more scammers, but even with a place that is reputable, you still must be very careful. The most important way to protect yourself is not to post personal identity information. Never give a credit card or bank account number to a stranger. If you are using a dating site, then always get validation that it’s a real person you are connecting for sure. Someone might be on Facebook; but if they don’t show up anywhere

else in an online search, it may be a huge indicator of a false identity. If anybody asks for money, hold onto your checkbook, because real romance doesn’t rely on a checkbook. If you’re looking for love, make it long-term, and if it seems too reasonable to be true, it probably is! Make sure you can verify the person through a third party. If you are scammed, you should avoid trying to go after them. They may be a part of organized crime. Instead, file reports with the Federal Trade Commission and your local police. If it’s proven to be a case beyond state bounds, the FBI will get involved. You can also contact your state attorney general. If you have suffered identity theft, Credit companies will give you free assistance and bring in the police. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in Palm Springs. Ex-spy Skripal poisoning ‘clearly came from Russia’

By Desert Star Staff US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has thrown his support behind UK allegations that Russia is responsible for the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal in the UK, whether directly or through negligence. The poisoning is “a really egregious act” and will “certainly trigger a response,” Tillerson told reporters on board an aircraft as he was returning to Washington DC from Nigeria. And, although he admits he does not know whether the Russian government had knowledge of the attack, he has agreed with British investigators that Moscow is “likely responsible.” Tillerson said that the US has “full confidence” in the investigation carried out by the UK authorities and in the preliminary conclusions they have reached on Russia’s alleged complicity in the former spy’s death. The US diplomat, however, like the UK PM before him, used the word “appears” when attributing the “attempted murder” to

Russia and stopped short of providing any new evidence to support the claims. He used the opportunity to again lash out at Russia for what the US and its allies are pitching as Moscow’s “destabilizing role” in Ukraine and Syria, “and now the UK.” Moscow, Tillerson alleged,” continues to be an irresponsible force of instability in the world, acting with open disregard for the sovereignty of other states and the life of their citizens.” It appears that the White House and the State Department are out of sync on the matter. Shortly before Tillerson endorsed the UK government, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders refused to attribute the incident, hinting that more proof is essential to drawing any definite conclusions. “The use of a highly lethal nerve agent against UK citizens on UK soil is an outrage,” Sanders said, without speculating on culpability. “Right now, we are standing with our UK ally,”

she said, when pressed by a reporter on whether the White House condemnation of the incident means it is joining the blame game. “I think they’re still working through even some of the details of that, and we’re going to continue to work with the UK,” Sanders responded. Earlier, UK Prime Minister Theresa May gave Moscow until Wednesday to explain Russia’s alleged role in the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury. Speaking in the House of Commons, she alleged that the attack was either a plot by the Russian state perpetrated on British soil or a result of Russia’s negligence that allowed a military-grade toxic agent to leave a laboratory and fall into the wrong hands. May’s accusations against Russia have yet to be backed by proof, as no evidence has so far been released into the public domain. It did not stop MPs from pinning the blame on Russia, however, berating it as a “rogue state” and the incident as a “warlike act” that

calls for a prompt response from the EU and NATO. Alexander Litvinenko, an ex-KGB agent who fled to Britain in 2000, died in November 2006 after being poisoned with radioactive polonium 21, which was allegedly slipped into his tea. His former colleague and now Russian State Duma deputy Andrey Lugovoy was

charged with the murder but denies any responsibility. Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky was found dead in his estate near London in March 2013. The death of the businessman, who had turned into a vocal Kremlin critic in his later years, triggered speculation about Moscow’s role. However, British police have found no foul play.

for defamation and racial discrimination in August saying he had been misquoted. The contents of article were heavily promoted by Fox News’ Sean Hannity, who pushed the Rich conspiracy on his show. Fox retracted the story on May 23, publishing a statement on their website: “On May 16, a story was posted on the Fox News website on the investigation into the 2016 murder of DNC Staffer Seth Rich. The article was not initially subjected to the high degree of editorial scrutiny we require for all our reporting. Upon appropriate review, the article was found not to meet those standards and has since been removed.” The family’s lawyer, Leonard A Gail of Massey & Gail LLP said: “Whether motivated by party politics, ratings, corporate profit, or personal gain, we hope to help prevent this kind of malicious and reckless behavior in the future so that others can be spared the hell the Riches have had to endure.” A Fox spokesperson

said: “We can’t comment on this pending litigation.” Rich’s murder has longfuelled speculation that he was in fact the DNC leaker. This is contradicted by US intelligence’s claims that the DNC was hacked by Russia in a bid to prevent Clinton from winning the election. News of the Rich lawsuit sparked further debate and speculation across social media Wednesday, with many still maintaining Rich was killed because he was the leaker. WikiLeaks has not said Rich was the leaker, however, founder Julian Assange further fuelled rumors when he spoke of Rich in an interview with Dutch TV Nieuwsuur in August 2016. “Whistleblowers go to significant efforts to get us material and often very significant risks,” he said. “There’s a 27-yearold, works for the DNC, was shot in the back, murdered just a few weeks ago for unknown reasons as he was walking down the street in Washington.”

Seth Rich lawsuit: Fox News sued over WikiLeaks-DNC claims

By Desert Star Staff The parents of late DNC staffer Seth Rich have sued Fox News over a retracted report claiming their son was in contact with WikiLeaks and leaked the DNC emails to the whistleblowing organization. Joel and Mary Rich filed the suit in Federal District Court in Manhattan on Tuesday, accusing the network of fabricating a conspiracy theory in its May 16 article. The piece alleged Rich leaked information to WikiLeaks. Reporter Malia Zimmerman and political operative Ed Butowsky are named in the suit along with Fox News. According to the complaint obtained by RT.com, the Richs “seek justice for having become collateral damage in a political war to which they are innocent bystanders.” The filing says Fox “intentionally exploited this tragedy — including through

lies, misrepresentations, and half-truths,” and calls the article a “sham.” Rich was killed on July 10, 2016. He was shot walking home from a bar in what police have stated was a botched robbery. The case has yet to be solved, and the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department has “identified no suspects, witnesses, or possible motives,” the suit says. FOX NEWS ARTICLE The Fox News article published in May, 2017 claimed Rich was a source of the leaked DNC emails which WikiLeaks published on July 22, 2016. The emails revealed the committee’s favoritism towards presidential candidates Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primaries. The suit says Fox News’ “outrageous conduct prevented them [the Richs]

from coming to terms with his murder because they were repeatedly forced to relive it. Whatever progress they had made in accepting Seth’s death and moving forward was completely derailed by Defendants’ outrageous behavior.” The Fox article quoted an unnamed federal investigator, who said they had seen an FBI report revealing Rich had been in contact with the late WikiLeaks director Gavin MacFayden. Rod Wheeler, a private investigator and Fox News contributor, was featured heavily in the original story and reportedly told Fox News his investigation also found emails had been exchanged. He was quoted as saying he believed “the answers to who murdered Seth Rich sit on his computer on a shelf at the DC police or FBI headquarters.” Wheeler sued Fox March 21, 2018

6 tips for winning scholarships

C

FAMILY FEATURES

ollege is a significant investment and millions of families each year face the question of how to pay for it. One way students can position themselves for success is by seeking out various forms of financial assistance. Earning scholarships can be one way to offset the financial burden, but winning a scholarship can sometimes be as competitive as gaining admission to the college of your choice. While most scholarships don’t entirely cover college tuition, they can be useful tools to help cover educational expenses such as room and board, tuition and books. Some scholarships can be earned by meeting or exceeding certain standards, such as academic performance, while other scholarships are based on financial need or personal interests of the applicant. There’s also a wealth of opportunities that support students in specific areas, whether it be from companies, professional organizations or foundations. For example, the America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders program offers industry-specific scholarships each year for those looking to study agriculture-related fields. While your academic performance, character and extracurricular resume all play a part, knowing where to look for scholarships can make all the difference when it comes time to

W

pay for your education. These tips can help you identify and apply for scholarships that match your interests and credentials.

Complete the FAFSA

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may be required to apply for a number of scholarships, particularly scholarships offered by most colleges and universities based on need. It is also required for other forms of financial aid, such as subsidized or unsubsidized loans. While you can begin filling out the FAFSA on Oct. 1 of the year prior to needing aid, many need-based scholarships give priority to students who complete the FAFSA by their state’s application deadline. It is important to note that some colleges and universities have earlier deadlines.

Talk to Your Counselor Colleges or universities and scholarship providers often supply information about their award offerings and applications to high school counselors. Many institutions also offer specific awards by major for both new and returning students that can be applied for through the school’s financial aid office. These resources, as well as newsletters and bulletin boards outside of these offices, can help you identify

Apply for Scholarships in Your Field of Interest Many job sectors have scholarship opportunities available through related clubs, organizations, small businesses and other benefactors. For example, the America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund in conjunction with the FFA, provides $1,500 scholarships to students endorsed by local farmers for continuing their education at two- or four-year universities and trade schools in agriculture-related fields of study. This year, the program will award more than $500,000 in scholarships to students in fields such as mathematics, computer science, business, communications, engineering, farming, agronomy, education and more. Students can learn more about the program by visiting GrowAgLeaders.com.

Don’t Overlook Smaller Award Amounts When it comes to paying for your education, every scholarship you receive – even those that come with smaller, one-time award amounts – can help defray the costs beyond tuition for books, supplies

and living expenses. Many times, scholarships with smaller award amounts have fewer additional requirements that must be satisfied outside of materials traditionally required for submission such as transcripts, letters of reference and an application.

Look for Essay Applications

Students are often more likely to forgo applying to scholarships that require essays, videos or additional assets that promote their accomplishments outside of submitting an application and a copy of their transcripts. This typically leads to a smaller candidate pool. Due to the added requirements, these scholarships can oftentimes

come with larger monetary values, as well.

Use a Scholarship Search Engine

While a simple search for “college scholarships” on any search engine is likely to elicit plenty of options, there are sites available that are dedicated to helping students identify college scholarship opportunities. While paid options exist, there are also several free sites, such as Scholarships.com, Fastweb and Scholarship America, that can provide local, regional and national options based on the information you provide. Other, more industry-specific websites, such as FFA.org, can provide scholarship opportunities that pertain to a certain field of interest.

INCREASING YOUR SCHOLARSHIP ODDS

hile there is no way to guarantee a scholarship to help offset the costs of higher education, there are things you can do to increase your odds of getting noticed by admissions departments and those who award scholarships. Before sending in your application, consider these tips:

Get Involved Students who are involved in extracurricular activities, such as volunteer causes, sports, clubs or student government, often give themselves a leg up on the competition when achievements in the classroom are similar. Getting involved outside of the traditional school day is also a way to network, which can be helpful when it comes time to ask for letters of recommendation.

www.desertstarweekly.com

scholarships for which you may be eligible to apply.

Apply Early

A good rule of thumb is to not wait until the due date to submit your application and other materials as issues out of your control can arise, such as a website malfunction or a not-yet-submitted recommendation letter. In fact, some scholarships close once they receive a certain amount of applicants, and those reviewing applications can put a premium on those received earlier.

Look Professional

Ensure your online presence matches the persona your application depicts. As more college admissions departments, employers and scholarship committees are researching candidates online prior to awarding admission, interviews or scholarship money, be sure to

March 21, 2018

clear your social media accounts of any inappropriate or unprofessional material, look yourself up on search engines to be aware of any information available about you and use a simple email address that includes your name in some fashion.

Proofread Read back through your scholarship application as well as your essay a few times once you’re finished to ensure everything looks and sounds as you intended. Pay particularly close attention to spelling and grammar, and if time permits, ask someone you trust – such as a parent, teacher or counselor – to double-check your work prior to submitting your application.

Gathering at Taos Plaza for Gun Violence Walkout

By Desert Star Staff TAOS, N. M. – Students, parents and spiritual leaders gather at the Taos Plaza today to show support for the 17 people killed in the Parkland, Fla., school shooting last month. The latest mass school shooting has galvanized young people across the country and reignited debate over gun control. Schools in Taos are closed for spring break, but event organizer Jill Cline described a local groundswell to recognize the horror of school shootings. “We’ve become so desensitized that sometimes, we really lose our ability to respond when it happens close to home,” said Cline, who also is a youth minister at St. James Episcopal Church. “But I think people are really at that place of saying, ‘I

don’t want it to happen close to home. I don’t want it to happen anywhere.’ And it’s really sad when we have to look at a situation of saying, ‘Well, it was only one or two,’ before it becomes important.” Last December, the small New Mexico town of Aztec became the site of a school shooting when a 21-yearold gunman, pretending to be an Aztec High School student, killed two high school athletes before killing himself. Many schools have discouraged students from joining the walkout, but there are 2,000 registered events nonetheless. Protests also are expected outside the White House and the U.S. Capitol. Cline believes it’s important to support students who want to voice their hopes and fears around gun safety. “Even though we’re

There are 2,000 registered school walkout events planned for today as part of the Enough is Enough movement. (npr.org) on spring break, it seems like there are teens who want to support their peers in Parkland, and

peers nationwide, who are stepping out of classrooms and taking 17 minutes for 17 deaths,” she noted.

The gathering on the Plaza begins at 10 a.m. Another gun-control march is plan

acts of violence, substance abuse or violations of protective orders. Aaron Dunn, case manager at Branches Domestic Violence Shelter in Huntington, says he isn’t surprised. He says it fits a pattern known far too well among those working to curb domestic violence. “Domestic violence does not exist in a vacuum, right?” he states. “So that’s not the first person they’ve abused. It’s not going to be the last person they’ve abused. “It’s something that pervades our work, honestly. There is that pattern that it’s not just one thing. It builds on another.” Everytown looked at the more than 150 cases between 2009 and 2016 where four or more people were killed, not including the shooter. Gun advocates argue more firearms would

prevent cases like those. To Dunn, that shows a basic misunderstanding of how violence happens. He says people almost always hurt others they know. Dunn says except for bystanders, the people who get shot are almost always connected to the person doing the shooting. He says that goes against the theory that more guns will make people safer. “You would think that we live in the Wild West, that Billy the Kid is going to come around at every corner, and you’re going to have to defend yourself with your weapon,” he relates. “And that’s simply not the case.” A bill that just overwhelmingly passed the U.S. House includes grants aimed at helping schools and police identify signs of potential violence. The legislation now moves to the Senate.

Republican candidate in tight Pennsylvania House race refuses to concede defeat

By Desert Star Staff Democrat candidate Conor Lamb has claimed victory in Pennsylvania’s razor-tight special House election. But, in a dramatic twist, Republican candidate Rick Saccone is refusing to concede defeat. There was just a few hundred votes between the two candidates in the competitive race for the conservative 18th District seat on Wednesday morning. Democrat Lamb claimed victory late on Tuesday, but Saccone is not accepting defeat. No official results have yet been released. “We are absolutely

not conceding,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Matt Gorman said on Wednesday. “We’re not ruling out a recount or any other further legal action.” “We are still fighting the fight. It’s not over yet,” Saccone said on Tuesday. Absentee ballots are in the process of being counted, as well as the military vote. Electoral victory in the congressional district is exceptionally important for both parties. The district has been seen as President Donald Trump’s home turf since he scooped a decisive victory there by 20

percentage points in 2016. Republicans have been shaken by the unexpectedly competitive nature of the race. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan warned that it was a “wake-up call.” He accused Democrat Lamb of running as a conservative, in defiance of a traditional Democratic stance. “They were able to pick a candidate who could run as a conservative,” Ryan said at the Republican leadership’s weekly press conference on Wednesday. “The candidate that’s going to win this race is the candidate that ran as a prolife, pro-gun, anti-Nancy March 21, 2018

5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

By Desert Star Staff April 22 is Earth Day, an annual opportunity to celebrate the natural world and get involved in short- and long-term efforts to protect the environment. Here are five ways to celebrate. 1. Volunteer. Many neighborhoods and communities around the country host volunteer cleanups to honor Earth Day. Find one in your area or organize your own: gather some friends, some sturdy garbage bags and pairs of work gloves, and head out to a park or the shore of a local waterway for a clean-up. 2. Enjoy nature. Get outside and enjoy nature. Even if you aren’t an experienced hiker, there are plenty of tools to make getting outdoors easy, such as wearable tech, which can support your adventure. One option is Casio’s ProTrek PRW3510Y-8, which has triple sensor technology, including a compass, thermometer, altimeter and barometer, allowing you to track your surroundings as you explore them. Featuring Tough Solar Power, it can be charged by sunlight or florescent light, making it an eco-friendly choice. 3. Plant a tree. Trees

provide shade and food for people and a habitat for birds and other wildlife. What’s more, they produce oxygen for people to inhale, as well as sequester CO2. Trees also reduce polluting runoff by intercepting water. In short, we need trees! Celebrate Earth Day by planting one. Each year, you can watch it mature and grow. 4. Reduce waste. The land and ocean have become saturated with plastics and other trash. Get into the habit of reducing waste by recycling and reusing items as much as

possible. Take a look at the footprint you create with your plastic consumption and find ways to improve your habits. Bring a reusable bag to the grocery store. Buying a drink? Don’t use a straw. Getting takeout? Ask the restaurant to hold the plastic silverware. 5. Update your technologies. Outdated tech often contains harmful elements that can hurt the environment, such as lead paint or mercury. Check out newer models that meet international standards like The Minamata Convention

on Mercury. For example, Casio Lampfree Projectors combine a laser, a fluorescent element and LED light to deliver a hybrid light source that lasts up to 20,000 hours while sustaining a high brightness. Because these projectors are mercury-free, it removes the need to replace hazardous and expensive bulbs. This Earth Day, celebrate a healthy planet with environmental stewardship at-home and in your community. StatePoint

Groups Protest Expansion of Tar-Sands Oil Refining in CA

By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO – Protesters took to the streets of San Francisco on Monday, to denounce the possible expansion of an oil refinery in the North Bay town of Rodeo – a decision they say was taken behind closed doors. Documents from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District show that Phillips 66 will now have permission to ramp up processing of oil sands at two hydrocracking units from 42,000 barrels a day to 65,000, a 55-percent increase. Hollin Kretzmann, an attorney with the Center for

Biological Diversity, says the agency changed the permit and approved it after the public comment period was over. And he says the process emits toxins into the air. “Processing tar sands is extremely dangerous and energy-intensive, and it’s going to increase the risk of air pollution, of water pollution, and increase the risk of health impacts to our communities,” Kretzmann warns. Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, denied that the permit allows for an expansion and said the

matter will be debated publicly at a hearing on April 9. Phillips 66, when contacted, offered no comment. Last year, local authorities in the San Luis Obispo area rejected a request by Phillips 66 to upgrade some rail lines to allow for more oil trains. The company has also applied to expand its marine

terminals, to take in more tar sands via boat - something Kretzmann also opposes. “It’s going to receive these dangerous tar sands via ships, and those ships coming in and out of San Francisco Bay have potential to cause spills and accidents and do a great deal of harm to our fragile ecosystem in

the Bay Area,” he says. A coalition of environmental groups petitioned the federal EPA on Monday to step in and overrule the permit. Those groups include Communities for a Better Environment, San Francisco Baykeeper, Friends of the Earth, the Sierra Cluband Stand.earth.

’Lady Bird’ Now on DVD

Nine films were nominated for an Oscar in the best picture category this year. If you haven’t had the chance to see them all, many are now available on DVD like “Dunkirk,” ”Darkest Hour,” “I, Tonya,” “Get Out,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing,Missouri’ and “Lady Bird’ starring Saoirse Ronan in the title role. “Lady Bird” was written by actress Greta Gerwig and the film also marks her directorial debut. Gerwig was nominated for an Oscar for her work. In “Lady Bird” she tells the story of a young Sacramento senior in a Catholic High School (Saoirse Ronan) who calls herself Lady Bird. When a priest asks her if that’s her given name she tells him “Yes, I gave the name to myself.” She is feisty, bright and eager to attend a college back east to get as far away from Sacramento as she can. She tells her parents she wants to be where real scholastic opportunities and culture can be found. However, her

mother (Laurie Metcalf, who won three Emmys for her work on TV’s “Roseanne”) feels it will be too expensive. She also tells her daughter she is “ a snob.” Undeterred, Lady Bird appeals to her father (Tracy Letts) for help. Because she is very special to him, he tells her he will do his best to see that she has enough money to follow her dreams. It is clear from the very start that there is tension between Lady Bird and her mother. Early on the two of them are driving in the car, listening to the radio, when the atmosphere changes from cordial to combative. Finally, when Ladybird has had enough, she unleashes her anger verbally before she opens the car door and falls out on the road much to her mother’s shock. In the process, Lady Bird breaks her arm. According to director Gerwig, the film deals with senior year experiences and romantic relationships, but “most of all the mother-

daughter relationship is the love story of the film.” “Lady Bird” is also filled with high school experiences, friendships, and romance. Lucas Hedges and Timothee Chalamet play the boys in her life. The head nun at her parochial school is Lois Smith. Purity is expected at all times at the school, as shown when a nun chaperone at a

school dance tells a couple to leave six inches between themselves for “the holy spirit.” Lady Bird’s best friend is a plump, cheerful Julie (Beanie Feldstein) who always sits next to her in class and the cool, wealthy Jenna (Odeya Rush) who makes the devoted Julie jealous. As the film progresses, Lady Bird heads off to college,

5 Ways to Reduce Everyday Stress By Desert Star Staff Deadlines, responsibilities, bills -- there are so many causes of stress in our lives. Unfortunately, stress can take a negative toll on one’s health and wellness, particularly if it goes unaddressed for too long. Indeed, common effects of stress include headaches, stomach upset, anxiety, sleep problems and more, according to the Mayo Clinic. This April, which is Stress Awareness Month, consider these strategies for relieving stress. • Aromatherapy: Scent your home and workspace with stress-relieving scents like lavender, rosemary and peppermint. Support your adventures with waterresistant wearable tech, like the WSD-F20 ProTrek Smart Outdoor Watch, which features functions like full color maps and GPS, app functionality to track progress, as well as sensor technology, allowing you to comfortably get off the beaten path and better appreciate your surroundings. • Meditate: Many experts agree on the benefits of meditation, from increased positive emotions to the relief of stress and anxiety.

And these days, meditation is more accessible than ever, as employers offer mindfulness programs in the workplace, mobile apps in guided meditation abound, and communities and fitness clubs add practices like tai chi and yoga to their rosters. • Enjoy music: Music can be an extremely powerful outlet for stress relief, particularly when you’re getting creative and making it yourself. Have the means at home to play a variety of beautiful music so that you can de-stress any time you need. To faithfully reproduce the sounds of acoustic instruments like guitars, drums, basses, brass, wind instruments, string ensembles and more, you don’t need

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Board meetings should be efficient and business-like events, but can unfortunately often be tumultuous and disorganized. Ineffective meetings frustrate directors, managers, and even the audience. The directors set the tone for the meeting, and there are ways in which the HOA board can contribute to (or prevent) a chaotic meeting environment. Room configuration. How is the board seated? If the directors are all seated in a line facing the audience, a subtle message is conveyed: The board is talking to the audience. It is not surprising that in such a seating configuration the audience believes it is their right to talk to the board in return. If the board sits more in a semi-circle, the directors can face each other, while the audience is able to listen to the board deliberate. Talking to the audience.

Some directors cannot resist “playing to the crowd” and speaking to the audience. This completely disrespects the other directors, and also can lead to raucous response from the audience. Directors should never grandstand to the audience and should confine their remarks to their board colleagues. No rules. Very few associations have meeting conduct rules. Such rules can prohibit certain intolerable behaviors, such as shouting, physical intimidation, and profanity or hate speech. All members should be able to feel safe as they attend meetings. Should anyone disrupt the meeting, rules would empower the board to impose discipline. Meeting rules can also contain open forum guidelines, disciplinary hearing procedures, and other helpful information explaining the various meeting procedures. Undisciplined deliberation. A disciplined board stays on the agenda item at hand and avoids straying into other side issues. Rambling board

deliberations will frustrate both directors and audience. All directors should help in reminding their board colleagues when the group goes off the topical rails – it’s not only the chair’s job. Interfering with open forum. Open forum is a critically important event because it is the one time in the meeting when association members speak and the board just listens. Directors should not interject or respond during open forum remarks. If the directors interrupt a member’s open forum remarks, it adds a conversational element into the meeting – but this is not a conversation, it is a board meeting. Furthermore, if directors are unable to quietly listen to open forum remarks, why is it fair to demand that the audience quietly listen to the board deliberations? Board decorum deficit. Good meeting behavior begins with a respectful and calm chair and a mature group of directors. If the board is disorderly, it is unreasonable to expect the

audience to be otherwise. Letting it happen. A loudmouth bully only takes over meetings when nobody stops them. A common response to meeting disruption is to adjourn, but that means the bully won. Instead, take a short recess, allowing the disruptor to choose between calming or leaving. Disrespectful disagreements. One sad hallmark of our present culture is the unwillingness to express disagreement respectfully. We shake our heads at some of the antics and venom spewing from both sides of the political aisle – but miss that sometimes

our neighbors are treating each other the same way. Businesslike HOA meetings do not just happen. They result from disciplined and intentional conduct, building a positive and respectful HOA meeting culture.

Up Close & Personal With Patrick Schwarzenegger trust me, all the guys gave me input – do they like her, do they not like her, can she hang out with the boys. So it’s a vice versa situation.

Bella Thorne (Katie) and Patrick Schwarzenegger (Charlie) Photo Credit: Ed Araquel Out of the historic Kennedy clan has emerged yet another young “prince,” and his name is Patrick Arnold Shriver Schwarzenegger. The eldest son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, his family tree reads like the who’s who in American philanthropy and politics, ranging from Robert F. Kennedy, Ted Kennedy, and John F. Kennedy, to his maternal grandmother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who founded the Special Olympics, and his grandfather, Sargent Shriver, who was a United States Ambassador to France, the first director of the Peace Corps, and the Democratic nominee for Vice President of the United States under George McGovern in the 1972 U.S. presidential election. Patrick is taking a nonpolitical path and began his career as a model. He’s a local boy and was educated at the Brentwood School and received a degree from USC’s Marshall School of Business as well as a degree from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. In keeping with the philanthropic tradition of the family, with the help of his parents Patrick founded Project360 when he was 15, some of the proceeds earmarked for charitable donations. 24-year-old Patrick’s love of the world of film goes back to his childhood when he hung out with his dad on set and got bitten by the acting bug. He makes his film debut as Charlie in “Midnight Sun,” in which he co-stars with Bella Thorne as Katie Price. This is a touching story about a young girl with a terrible disease, how she copes with it, and how meeting Charlie brings her unexpected joy. Chemistry reads closer and closer to each other are when you do it with the on and off screen and I think leading person who is already that closeness and comfort cast. You basically see if you was portrayed in the film. have chemistry with each other. I had known Bella a little bit How did Bella help you prior to this film and texted her with some of the very telling her that I was going to emotional scenes? have a chemistry read with her Patrick: You know, when and wondered if there was any you play tennis with someone chance she could meet me. who is not good, you’re not She texted back, ‘Print out an good, but when you play with extra set of the sides,* choose someone who is really good, a place, and I’ll meet you.’ you become better. That’s how it worked with Bella. What influence did your dad have in your pursuing an acting career? Patrick: Obviously while I was growing up my dad made a few films. (Laughter) My favorite thing was I could ask him to take me to the set. He would pick me up early from school, throw me in the Hummer and we would drive to Universal. I wanted to stay there all day because I would watch movies, visit him in the make-up room, and watch him go from dad to “Mr. Freeze” or “The Terminator.” I would see something on paper become a reality in terms of film. During breaks we would jump in his golf cart and go on all the rides. I loved going to Craft Services and getting candy. (Laughter) This was when films were always shot in Los Angeles and he filmed at Universal Studios. So I loved going to sets and fell in love with film and always wanted to do film. I took some theatre classes at school. I think my parents always knew that I wanted to be an actor but they also wanted me to get an education. They wanted me to finish high school and go to college. I’m happy I did. My dad is obviously someone that had a path in acting, but also has the real estate and business side as well as the political side. You know with acting you can work for three months and not work for a year. So having other things you like to do during those down times is important. Did you have more fun on film sets than when you lived in Sacramento? Patrick: (He laughs) Sacramento? When my dad ran for governor, I was around ten so when you’re ten or eleven – (makes a weighing motion with two hands) the capital or movie sets? (Laughter) It was definitely a great experience. I got to learn a lot, but as a kid going to movie sets was more fun. On which set did you have the most fun? Patrick: A lot of the filming of “Terminator 3” was shot on the hillside near the Griffith Observatory so I got to go on a lot of hikes, but my favorite was when he was working on the Universal lot. You literally got to go to “King Kong” or “Jaws” and it was a dream come true for a kid. Your name: Does it help or hinder? Patrick: You can look at

anything in life as a positive or negative. I definitely like to see it as a positive. I’ve gotten to meet so many people from the film industry through my dad – people he’s worked with since he was a young actor. Does it help open up some doors for me? Well yes, but again like everything in life, if you’re not going to put the time in, if you’re not going to work hard, if you’re not dedicated, people will care only so much what your name is and then they’ll say “next.”

You and your dad are built quite differently. Where do you fall and did you have to train for the swimming sequences? Patrick: Well before this film, I loved weight lifting, I loved eating, I loved bulking up. But for this role, I lost almost 20 pounds because I stopped lifting and started swimming. When you start swimming, your body gets wider shoulders and a slimmer waist. I had someone from the USC swim team train me four days a week for the swimming sequences and I actually got pretty good at free-style swimming. What was your reaction when you watched the film for the first time and who did you watch it with? Patrick: I watched it with my friends and my family. It’s weird to see yourself on screen and to hear your voice. I was thinking, ‘Do I really sound like that?’ My mom and sisters were tearing up at the end, which made me happy, I guess. (Laughter) They really liked it and I’m really proud that I got to do this. How did your dad react to the film? Patrick: He’s proud. He actually shed a tear and I don’t know if it’s from the story or from just seeing me on the big screen. Kids want their parents to be proud of them and to be happy for them. My parents just want us to do what we want to do. My dad has always said to follow your passion. It’s not really work if you’re doing something you love to do. Congratulations. Your family has good reason to be proud of you. Patrick: Thank you…. *Sides: Excerpted pages from a screenplay that an actor can study and read to prepare for an audition or screen test. **XP: Xeroderma Pegmentosum

New Music Releases Deliver Soaring Sights and Sounds Several new concert films champion the legacy of enduring classic rock artists, while the debut from Greta Van Fleet may well be turning young audiences onto the power of blues-fueled, hard-charing rock ‘n’ roll.

in celebration of the 50th anniversary of “Days Of Future Passed.” The band’s concert at the Sony Centre For The Performing Arts in Toronto was filmed, and has now been released on a multiple of formats including Blu-ray, DVD, vinyl and audio CD. The set explores the band’s hits and deeper cuts. The first half of the concert includes a wide range of the group’s songs; the driving “I’m Just a Singer (In A Rock and Roll Band)” “The Story in Your Eyes” are extended allowing Justin Hayward to showcase his melodic-meetsflashy guitar playing; “The Voice” is bolstered by lush keyboards, acoustic guitar and Hayward’s warm vocals. Other earlyset highlights include the folk rocker “Your Wildest Dreams” and “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere,” the latter featuring a lush arrangement with Hayward, John Lodge and Norda Mullen artfully blending their voices. The next portion of the concert finds the Moody Blues joined by an orchestra to perform “Days Of Future Passed” in its entirety; this set includes the baroque rocker “Peak Hour,” intoxicating “Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon)” and eternal “Nights in White Satin.” Finally, the band uses its encore to elevate

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES — The California Fire Foundation (CFF), a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, announced today that its 5th annual Celebrating Uncommon Courage gala will honor actors Johnny Galecki and Jaime Camil, as well as Hilton executive Joe Berger. Hosted by “Superstore” actress Lauren Ash and set to take place at the Avalon Hollywood on March 28, the gala will raise crucial funds to support CFF’s mission to provide emotional and financial assistance to families of fallen firefighters, firefighters, and the communities they protect. Attendees will mingle with firefighters, celebrities, and corporate and entertainment executives at a cocktail reception, sponsored bar, and a three-course catered dinner. They will also have the opportunity to enjoy live music from Plain White T’s and stand-up comedy. Attendees will also receive special edition, high-demand art from worldrenowned artists such as Ron English, Risk, and more. Honorees include Johnny Galecki (“The Big Bang Theory”), an outspoken

supporter of firefighters and was himself a fire victim when his ranch near San Luis Obispo burned down in a wildfire last year; Jaime Camil (“Jane the Virgin,” “Coco”), a tireless advocate for CFF’s work and whose mother and grandmother were both saved from a fire by firefighters; and Joe Berger, EVP & President of Americas, Hilton, a longtime corporate donor and supporter of CFF’s efforts. Sydney Rockett, a senior at California Baptist University, will speak about her experience as a child of a fallen firefighter who received the California Fire Foundation’s Daniel A. Terry Scholarship. “Firefighters dedicate their lives to serving our communities and keeping our families safe,” said CFF Chairman Lou Paulson. “The past year has been very challenging across California, but our women and men stepped up like they always do when fires break out. We’re humbled that so many people are coming together to show their gratitude and financially support the services CFF provides to firefighters, their families, and disaster victims.”

Tens of thousands of people were impacted by massive wildfires in Northern and Southern California over the past year. Thousands of firefighters heroically battled blazes across the state and the CFF assisted with recovery through its Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency (SAVE) program. Other major functions carried out by California Fire Foundation throughout the year include honoring fallen firefighters at the California Firefighters Memorial in

The Sensational Space Shifters’ “Live At David Lynch’s Festival of Disruption.” Filmed at the historic Ace Hotel Theatre in Los Angeles in October 2016, the hour-long event marked the first time that Plant had joined forces with the Sensational Space Shifters since 2012. The fast-moving set is freewheeling and spirited, with material ranging from the Louisianastyled blues of “Poor Howard” and trance blues of “Little Maggie” to songs anchored or blending Celtic, African, folk and rock styles. When I first heard the band’s roaring breakout single “Highway Tune,” I briefly wondered why I didn’t know the name of the track. In fact, Greta Van Fleet appears to take pride in completely mirroring the past while modern-day audiences seem hungry enough for the powerful blues-fueled material to fully embrace the revival rockers. And to be honest, the eight songs that speed along on “From The Fires” are so good, the Michigan-spawned rockers made a believer out of this critic as well. Information: www.GretaVanFleet.com.

By Desert Star Staff Last week, news of a previously-unknown iPhone unlocking device called GrayKey surfaced, and today, MalwareBytes shared photos and additional information about the product, which is designed for law enforcement officials. Created by a company named Grayshift, GrayKey is a small, portable gray box equipped with dual Lightning cables. Two iPhones can be connected to the GrayKey at once and need to be connected for about two minutes to install proprietary software that’s designed to guess the passcode for an iPhone. Once the software is installed, it will work to crack the passcode, a process that can take as little as a few hours for a short passcode or several days for a longer six-digit passcode. Once the GrayKey software has cracked the passcode, it’ll be displayed right on the screen of the iPhone. The iPhone can then be plugged back into the GrayKey to download all of the data on the iPhone, including the unencrypted contents of the Keychain, which can then be accessed using a computer. Based on screenshots, the GrayKey can crack new iPhones running modern versions of iOS. It works with

the iPhone X and iOS 11.2.5, the release of iOS that was likely available when the screenshots were captured. It probably also works with iOS 11.2.6, unless Apple has managed to block it in the latest operating system update. Grayshift presumably designed the GrayKey for law enforcement professionals, and it’s relatively expensive. A $15,000 option requires internet connectivity and is geofenced to a specific location once set up, while a $30,000 option requires no internet connection and can be used anywhere. MalwareBytes worries that the portable version of the GrayKey could easily fall into the wrong hands. It uses two-factor authentication,

but given that people “often write passwords on stickies and put them on their monitors,” it’s possible the token could be kept in the same location as the device. What happens if the GrayKey becomes commonplace in law enforcement? The cheaper model isn’t much of a danger if stolen--unless it’s stolen before setup--but at 4x 4x 2, the unlimited model could be pocketed relatively easily, along with its token, if stored nearby. Once off-site, it would continue to work. Such a device could fetch a high price on the black market, giving thieves the ability to unlock and resell stolen phones, as well as access to the highvalue data on those phones.

‘GrayKey’ iPhone Unlocking Box Used by Law Enforcement

How the GrayKey works is not known, but it’s believed to be using some jailbreaking process that could damage iPhones in some way. It’s also not known how the GrayKey device itself is protecting data that’s stored on it, and whether or not the data could be remotely accessed by hackers. It’s also unknown who Grayshift is selling the devices to. It’s possible that sales are limited to law enforcement officials in the United States, but it’s also possible that it’s being offered abroad. Other devices of this type have slipped out of the hands of law enforcement and have become widely available, so the same could happen with the GrayKey. Apple is continually

working to fix the kinds of exploits used by devices like the GrayKey, so it’s possible whatever mechanism the box uses will be fixed in a future update. The average iPhone owner likely doesn’t need to worry about the GrayKey, but as MalwareBytes points out, it is troublesome knowing such a device could fall into the hands of malicious entities. 5 ‘Healthy’ Habits Worth Giving Up

By Desert Star Staff While most weight loss proclamations are wellintentioned, sometimes they look better on paper than in practice, actually doing more harm than good. Here are five so-called “healthy” habits worth giving up on, as well as better solutions. Habit 1: I’m going to take up permanent residence in the gym. Working out is an important piece of the weight loss puzzle, but moderation is key. Studies suggest that too much exercise can lead to a number of issues like hormonal imbalance, fatigue, insomnia and even depression. Many people also report experiencing a drastic increase in appetite after extreme bouts of physical activity, which can lead to overeating and negate the weight-related benefits. Plus, if you exercise so intensely that you’re injured or sore for days, it will be difficult to sustain this otherwise healthy habit. Habit 2: I’m saying goodbye to fats completely. Fatty foods have gotten a bad rap. The reality is there are good fats and bad fats. In humans, fat helps support normal growth and development, provides energy, allows for proper cellular function, provides protective cushioning for organs, and

helps with absorption of certain vitamins. Bad fats are found in foods like meat, butter, lard, cream and trans fats (found in baked goods, fried foods and margarine) and can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Aim to replace these with good fats, which are associated with a decreased risk of chronic disease. Good fats include plant-based oils like olive and canola, avocados, nuts, seeds, and dairy, since these also offer the nutrition your body needs. Habit 3: I’m going to skip breakfast to cut calories. According to The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, if you’re skipping breakfast, you’re doing something wrong. Research shows breakfast helps support brain function, energy and mood. And research suggests that people who eat breakfast consume fewer calories throughout the day, weigh less and have fewer risk factors for heart disease. Just a few reasons to load up in the a.m. Habit 4: I’ll just crash diet to lose the weight. Crash diets don’t work and many people who do them end up just gaining the weight back. “Sustainable weight loss should not involve hunger or deprivation,” says Mandi Knowles, dietitian for South Beach Diet. “Your

Plans like South Beach Diet teach portion control through a low-carb, high-protein approach with meals delivered to your door. Habit 5: I’m going to stop snacking. Snacks can account for more than a quarter of one’s daily calories. But if you

munch on nutrient-dense foods (high in vitamins, minerals and fiber and low in calories), you’re more likely to maintain a healthy weight, according to the “National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.” So, snack wisely. “We have opened an investigation to understand the process failure and improve our oversight. We will undertake disciplinary and other processes as appropriate,” a Facebook spokeswoman said in a statement sent to The Australian at the weekend. Facebook boasts a global user base of approximately 1.86 billion people, but the company has built a far more detailed database of young people in Australia and New Zealand than had been previously reported anywhere. The breakdown of the regional database of young people is as follows: 1.9 million high schoolers with an average age of 16, 1.5 million third-level students averaging roughly 21 years old, and 3 million workers averaging 26 years old. The document details how Facebook collects precise information that is “not publicly available” on mood shifts within each demographic that are “shareable under nondisclosure agreement only.” For instance, “anticipatory emotions are more likely to be expressed early in the week, while reflective emotions increase on the weekend,” wrote David Fernandez and Andy Sinn, the two senior executives at Facebook who prepared the document, as cited by The Australian.

‘‘Facebook only permits research following a rigorous procedure of review whenever sensitive data, particularly data involving young people or their emotional behavior, is engaged,” Facebook said in a statement to The Australian. “This research does not appear to have followed this process,” the company added. However, targeting teenagers who are predominantly concerned with “looking good and body confidence,” and “working out & losing weight,” seems to have overstepped certain ethical boundaries for a company the size of Facebook which boasts a market cap of over $440 billion. Facebook disputed The Australian’s report in a brief statement on Monday, describing the premise of the article as “misleading.” “Facebook does not offer tools to target people based on their emotional state,” the company said, adding that the network’s analysis “was intended to help marketers understand how people express themselves on Facebook. It was never used to target ads and was based on data that was anonymous and aggregated.” “Facebook has an established process to review the research we perform. This research did not follow that process, and we are reviewing the details to correct the oversight.”

Facebook targets insecure teens

By Desert Star Staff A leaked, confidential document has exposed Facebook’s unsavory and often predatory advertising practices which target teenagers as young as 14 and preys on their insecurities. The social networks have denied the allegations, however. By monitoring users’ posts, media uploads, interactions on the platform, and their overall internet activity, the social media giant can establish when users are feeling “stressed,”

“defeated,” “overwhelmed,” “anxious,” “nervous,” “stupid,” “silly,” “useless,” and a “failure,” the confidential document states, The Australian reports. The Australian has published a series of articles detailing questionable practices by Facebook in the country, with the latest 23-page document, marked “Confidential: Internal Only,” providing unprecedented insight into how the corporation interacts with advertisers who use the platform.
