“Lovesport”

New Comedy from Desert Ensemble Theatre in Palm Springs By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Tony Padilla, awardwinning playwright/director, and Founding Producing Artistic Director of Desert Ensemble Theatre, for years preferred the shorter, one-act format

to tell his stories. When he finally did branch out into two act plays I think he found his groove. Padilla has covered a broad spectrum of genres and subject matter over the last ten years, winning accolades and awards along the way for himself and for the actors who perform in his productions. His compelling 2016

drama “Endangered Species”, explored how human beings react differently to incidents and situations outside their comfort zones, and once again won awards for the production. It is one that still remains with me as an example of Padilla’s insight into the human condition. In his latest comedy play “Lovesport”, now performing

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Opening night on March 18th at the 12th Annual Fashion Week was exciting as always. Frank Jones from Palm Springs Life Magazine explained they made the runway longer to accommodate all the 800 plus customers for viewing. The new runway is 100 feet long. The models have less than 3 minutes to make a clothing change. The evening started with a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony where Mayor Jan Harnik cut the ribbon with Jaishri and Raju Mehta, presenting sponsors from El Paseo Jewelers, and Rancho Mirage

council woman Kathleen Kelly as part of the event. Hundreds of people enjoyed the cocktail hour with music by DJ Alf Alpha, who played up-tempo music to get the crowd in the mood for the night. The guests come dressed up for this stylish event. Women wore long skirts, gowns and very chic outfits. Even the men got into the theme of fashion with hats, fitted designer shirts, leather and colorful jackets. This stylish crowd comes from all over the U.S. for this Fashion Week that gets larger each year and is known as a premier event. Opening night saw three

designers of various tastes showing their creations. Christopher Bates presented his men’s casual and business attire. The women were all smiles as these handsome models dressed very stylized men’s clothing. The men were talking among themselves about their likes of each design. The second designer was Adam Lippes, and his designs had the women clapping and the men oohing. This was all unique and wearable clothing. The third designer of the night was Mikael D. showing his collection of dresses that

Novak Djokovic lost to an up-and-coming player, Nick Kyrgios. You could see Djokovic was tired and not playing his best tennis. Venus Williams was a local favorite, but she lost in an early round to Elena Vasnina. Venus was the fan favorite, but Vesnina was just a little better on the court. It was a thrilling match

Other favorites and top seeds that lost early were Madison Keys and Coco Vanderweghe from the USA and Caroline Wozniacki for the women’s singles titles. Some of the favorite men who didn’t make the finals were Andy Murray, John Isner and Sam Querrey from the USA, Juan Del Potro and Jack Sock also from America. They will all be back next year I am sure. Celebrities find this tennis tournament a place to be to watch these great players. Leonardo DiCaprio, Suzanne Somers and her husband Alan Hamel, Jon Hamm, Bill Gates and many more that were not seen by the press. The many suites are places for Celebrities to watch but not be seen. Fans go by the player’s entrance to get an autograph after the player finishes. Fans hold huge tennis balls, hats and programs for autographs, and some go away lucky.

What is ESG investing & Why is this Sector Growing

By Janice Gough ESG is defined as Environmental, Social and Governance and refers to the three central factors in measuring the sustainability and ethical impact of an investment in a company or business. Socially responsible investors (SRI) are rewarded with both a return on investment and a feeling of satisfaction in knowing that their capital is making the world a more livable place. In 2005, a group of institutional investors participating in the United

Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative agreed to evaluate environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) as part of their fiduciary responsibility. The group agreed to a general acceptance among financial economists that companies adopting more socially responsible business practices, generally, did not underperform firms who focused solely on maximizing profits. Investment fiduciaries will begin to invest more in this type of investment. They must decide whether the long-term interest of society is more important than the net investment performance of their clients. The reality is, however, there may not be much of a tradeoff. The good news is that investing in environmentally conscious companies can help a client stay committed to a long-term investing strategy without a big sacrifice in returns. They recognize that the importance that socially conscious investing provides an added value to clients looking for

more than just net returns in an investment strategy. This sector of investing covers things such as Environmental concerns, climate change, nuclear energy and sustainability. The premise of debate in every area, is the depletion of resources, such as raw materials and the question of whether they will they be there in the future. There has been an increase in the pace of “impact” investing. The longterm view is becoming more prevalent among investors. The “G” in ESG represents Corporate governance and covers the area of investigation into the rights and responsibilities of the management of a company – its board, shareholders and the various stakeholders in that company. It addresses management structure, employee relations and executive compensation. For a company’s mission to be a social responsible company, they must maintain strict compliance themselves. The three concepts of social, environmental and corporate

governance are intimately linked to the concept of Responsible Investing. Companies are now being asked to list the percentage levels of bonus payments and the levels of remuneration of the highest paid executives and are coming under scrutiny from stock holders and equity investors alike. Investors are demanding ethically defined parameters in SRI companies. In defining the reasons that this investment sector will become a greater consideration, we only need to review the result of a fast opening gap from government policies. More specifically, we see the cuts that President Donald Trump is making to budgets of federal agencies and nonprofits. He has proposed cuts on foreign aid. Other proposed cuts are to the State Department by 28%, as well as the U.S. Agency for International Development and other international programs by 28%. He has signed executive orders to dismantle the clean water rule and defund health providers overseas that support

abortion, and has proposed a federal budget that among other things would slash the budget of the Environmental Protection Agency by 31%, the budget of the National Institutes of Health by 20%, and the budget of the Department of Housing and Urban Development agency by 13%. People are seeing that the burden is shifting to the private sectors, that we cannot any longer rely on government or corporations. Some of the social cuts and changes will come in Human rights, Consumer protection, and Animal welfare. Socially responsible companies must fill the gaps by providing working capital and loans to keep these agencies afloat.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Hello Mr. Richardson, I recently received a letter from our management company, that all owners that rent their units out must submit a copy of the agreement to the management company. The letter also says each time a renter moves out and a new renter moves in the owner of that unit will be charged a $100.00 fee. Are they entitled to a copy of my rental agreement? What is the basis they can charge a fee for a renter moving out and a new tenant moving in when there is no expense created to the association? Thank you. L.L., San Diego

a vested financial interest. Associations increasingly began in the past twenty years to impose rental limits to help reduce these tenancy concerns. In response, the California Association of Realtors successfully sponsored legislation now known as Civil Code 4740. That section requires rental limits be applied only to owners which acquired their residence after the rental limit was put in place. Section 4740 also requires that prior to renting a residence, the owner must inform the HOA in writing of the date owner acquired the property, and also provide the tenant’s name and contact information. Some associations adopt rules or even CC&R provisions requiring landlords provide additional information to the HOA. Unless your association has a written rule or CC&R requirement that the lease be filed with the HOA, you are not required to do so. Some associations impose fees for moving to or from the property. Typically, these condominium projects, concerned about wear and tear on elevators, hallways and lobbies from moving furniture and belongings in or out of the unit. The fee charged must be at least roughly connected to an actual HOA expense, under the holding in Watts v. Oak Shores. That dispute involved an association at Lake Nacimiento which had imposed a fee on short-term rentals, based on rough approximations of costs normally incurred

during the tenant moving process, assisted by the HOA’s accountant. In its 2015 published decision, the appellate court approved the board’s actions under the business judgment rule. Therefore, associations which can demonstrate actual costs incurred in the moving process can impose a fee against the owner to help defray that cost to the association. The calculation need not be exact, but must involve actual association expenses and at least rough estimates of the cost. So, your HOA may be able to support that $100 fee, if it

can demonstrate it was not just pulled out of thin air, but was the result of a reasonable study and estimate of the cost to the association of each move. Thanks for your question, Kelly

HOA Homefront – Leave My Tenant Alone!

Dear L.L.: Tenants can often be a controversial issue within homeowner associations. FannieMae and FHA guidelines have for a number of years imposed a maximum limit on rentals allowed in condominium projects for such loan eligibility. For years the limit was 50%, but the rule was liberalized last year, and now some associations may be able to obtain waivers which may permit a larger percentage of renters. Renters are not members, and boards normally do not have the power to directly discipline them for violating association rules. Furthermore, renters are normally thought to pay less attention to the upkeep of the project, since they do not have

Conservation Urged for World Water Day

Attention is being drawn to a precious commodity to many across the globe: water. By Desert Star Staff Wednesday is World Water Day, and Illinoisans are being asked to step up conservation to help people in this country and all over the world.

According to the U.N, there are more than 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home. Although it’s not at crisis level in most of the U.S., safe

By Desert Star Staff PORTLAND, Maine -- President Trump calls it his “America First” budget, but environmental groups in Maine say clean air, water and health for Americans are coming in dead last. Andrew LaVogue, campaign manager for Environment Maine, said one area of particular concern is Trump’s proposed 31 percent cut to the Environmental Protection Agency budget. He said Mainers live in the “tailpipe” of the nation when it comes to harmful carbon emissions, and Trump’s budget would put efforts to curb climate change at risk. “Well, as it concerns Maine, one of the most glaring problems is eliminating the Clean Power Plan, which is a national standard in cutting

emissions from coal-fired power plants,” LaVogue said. “So Maine cannot prevent Ohio from burning coal, but the Clean Power Plan can protect a state like Maine that is on the receiving end of all that pollution.” The Trump administration has defended the deep cuts, saying they reflect candidate Trump’s pledge to end what he called job-killing regulations. LaVogue called the Trump budget dirty and dangerous, adding that it fails to protect public health and the planet. He said Maine and other coastal states will be less able to respond to climate change and its impacts because of Trump’s plan to cut funding for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and its $73 million National

By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. - Environmental groups are going ahead with their challenge to permits for the Mariner East II pipelines, despite the denial of their petition to halt construction. The pipelines, being built

by Sunoco, will carry highly flammable, natural-gas liquids at high pressure for 300 miles across 17 Pennsylvania counties. According to Alex Bomstein, senior litigation attorney with the Clean Air Council, the state

water has been brought to the forefront recently because of contamination in Flint, Mich. Dan Haseltine is the lead singer of the band Jars of Clay, which was formed in

the 1990s by four students at Greenville College. He says during a trip to Africa to visit areas devastated by the AIDS crisis, the band was shocked to see people digging for water in dry riverbeds. “And it didn’t take long to kind of put some of the pieces together that if people are wrestling with this disease that destroys the immune system, and then they’re having to drink water that is filled with bacteria and disease, it was the water ultimately that was killing people,” he relates. After the trip to Africa, Haseltine helped start Blood:Water, which partners with African grassroots organizations to combat HIV/ AIDS and the water crises. The group encourages people to have some fun with conservation efforts by taking a water challenge, which could mean drinking only water for a number of days or going without it for an entire day.

Daniella Bostrom Couffe, communications manager of U.N. Water, says the theme for World Water Day this year centers on ways to conserve it. “In your home, you can do just simple things as turning off the tap when you brush your teeth, or you can stop putting oil or leftovers in the plug hole so that the wastewater becomes easier to treat and then to reuse,” she explains. Haseltine believes getting involved in the effort to bring clean water to those in need may be just what is needed. He calls it a good respite from the political strife that’s been happening in America. “We just need a breath,” he states. “We need somebody to tell us a better story that we can connect with, something that just means a little bit more.” Tips on how to conserve are online at www.unwater.org.

Environment Comes in Last in Trump’s Budget

Critics say President Trump’s budget virtually eliminates funding for proven programs to clean up the nation’s great waterways. (David Partee/NOAA) Sea Grant program. “Trump’s budget would also cut NOAA programs like the Sea Grant Program, a program that the University of

Maine at Orono participates in,” he said. “And it would cut funding at the Wells Reserve in southern Maine.” LaVogue said Trump’s

budget would also virtually eliminate funding for proven programs to clean up the nation’s great waterways.

Department of Environmental Protection permits were granted while there were still outstanding problems with the applications, including lack of a required analysis of alternative routes. “Sunoco never fixed that analysis, and never did the proper looking into whether it could avoid protected wetlands,” he said, “but DEP just went ahead and issued the permits anyway, and that’s just one of many examples.” In denying the petition to halt construction, the Environmental Hearing Board said Sunoco had met minimum standards. Bomstein noted that Sunoco has the single worst safety

record of all pipeline operators for incidents involving hazardous-liquid pipelines. Beyond potential damage to wetlands and waterways, Bomstein said, there are serious safety concerns. The pipelines will be carrying liquids that are 150 times more flammable than natural gas, and a leak anywhere would pose a threat of explosion or fire. “But if it blows up in an area such as suburban Delaware County or Chester County, or other areas along the route where there are a lot of people in close quarters,” he said, “it could just be horrific.” Bomstein said Sunoco

has seized private land through eminent domain, which the Clean Air Council believes is illegal. He said the company also has trespassed on private property when access hasn’t been granted, and the list goes on. “It has violated a settlement agreement with West Goshen Township, it’s violating zoning laws across the state,” he said. “So, almost every type of law you can imagine, it’s breaking right now.” But for now, the DEP permits remain in effect as the environmental groups’ appeal is being considered. The DEP permits are online at dep.pa.gov.

Faith Healing Bill Doesn’t Go Far Enough, Critics Say By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho – The Idaho Senate held a hearing on a bill Monday concerning the exemption faith healing receives as a medical practice for treating children. The Senate State Affairs Committee heard from Sen. Dan Johnson of Lewiston, Senate Bill 1182, which would make changes to the civil provisions in Idaho’s faith healing exemption laws, but would leave in place exemptions to criminal prosecutions for parents whose children are injured or die. Another bill, Senate Bill 1181, has been shelved for now. It would expand faith healing as a practice by directing courts to consider prayer and other forms of medical treatment beyond medicine. Bruce Wingate, founder of the Protect Idaho Kids

Foundation, opposes both bills. “There needs to be a deterrent, and these two bills are totally unacceptable from the standpoint of protecting the kids,” he states. Idaho is one of only two states with faith healing exemptions for manslaughter, civil liability for abuse or neglect, misdemeanor criminal charges for neglect or injury of a child, and felony criminal charges for neglect or injury of a child. The other state is Virginia. A bill addressing faith healing exemptions has been months in the making. In October, the Legislature had an interim hearing on religious exemption laws. In December and January, there were two known cases of children dying because they did not receive medical treatment for preventable diseases. Wingate says before these bills, several resolutions

A hearing was held Monday on a bill concerning faith-healing exemption laws in Idaho. (DieselDemon/Flickr) were written but never heard, and that lawmakers might be looking to sweep this issue under the rug. “If that’s the temperament of the Legislature, I would say that probably they will try to pass these as quickly as they can and hope that the problem

goes away,” he states. “It won’t. We will keep on it until we get some relief for the kids, but I think that’s their intention.” Wingate says the focus in Idaho has been on protecting the religious freedoms of adults, yet the rights of children are rarely considered.

“The Legislature wants to center this around religious freedom and we have no quarrel with that, but when it harms children, there’s also another issue and that’s the right to life for these children,” he stresses.

By Desert Star Staff New studies have found the prevalence of colorectal cancer is increasing for millennials and generation Xers. Screening can be a highly effective tool against the disease. And during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March, medical professionals are getting the word out on how to identify and prevent this highly dangerous disease. Colonoscopies are the most effective tool for screening. In Oregon, there’s also a mail-in test, known as the FIT test, that people can use to screen for the cancer from their homes. Dr. Tanya Kapka, medical director of CareOregon, says the importance of screening can’t be overstated. “We know that if we screen for colorectal cancer, we can actually impact the outcomes,” she states. “In other words, patients are more likely to get

it detected earlier and they’re more likely to survive a cancer or even to detect it before it becomes a cancer, such as precancerous polyps.” Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for men and the third leading cause for women in the United States. Kapka says CareOregon works with its partner coordinated care organizations across the state to provide FIT kits to members. She says in the first year of providing FIT kits, screening went up nearly 10 percent. Kapka notes that despite recent findings, the rate of colorectal cancer has decreased and more than 90 percent of colorectal cancer cases are found in people 50 and older. She says symptoms of cancer in young people include rectal bleeding, new abdominal pains, and

unexplainable bowel changes. Because of the high risk for people 50 and older, Kapka says they should use the FIT test every year and still should have regular colonoscopies. “The reason the colonoscopy is useful is because not only can it actually find pre-cancerous polyps or other lesions, but it can also at the same time remove them, so those would represent the cancers that we are preventing years down the line,” she explains. Kapka notes AfricanAmericans are at increased risk for colorectal cancer and many medical societies have suggested they begin screenings at an earlier age than the rest of the population. She adds that colorectal cancer screening is one of the Oregon Health Authority’s 17 metrics for improving health outcomes for patients.

Health Care Act, which some call Trumpcare in part because it bases the amount of the subsidies on age alone, and would no longer take into account ability to pay or the cost of insurance in a given state. House Speaker Paul Ryan defends the overhaul, saying it will give people a choice on whether to buy coverage and will increase competition in the marketplace.

Christ says the new proposal eliminates the taxes that paid for Obamacare, giving a huge break to insurance companies, drug makers, medical device companies and the wealthy, while slashing extra help for lower-income patients. “The Republican proposal also eliminates the cost-sharing assistance that reduces deductibles, copays and co-insurance,”

she points out. “So that means that out-of-the-pocket expenses are going to go up in addition to the premiums.” The Republican proposal also saves billions by capping the Medicaid expansion and imposing a 30 percent surcharge on people who lose coverage and can’t afford to buy a new plan right away. Ryan says he hopes to pass the GOP plan in the next two weeks.

Senior Advocates Oppose “Age Tax” Bill And “Trumpcare” By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Advocates for older Americans are criticizing a bill in the House of Representatives that would raise the amount insurance companies can charge seniors. Under the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies only could charge seniors three times what younger adults pay. But the new bill raises that to five times – meaning premiums for the average senior could go up as much as $3,000 a year. Amber Christ, a senior staff attorney with advocacy group Justice in Aging says this bill amounts to an “age

Reports expose Gorsuch record against students with disabilities

By Desert Star Staff DENVER – According to two new reports, Judge Neil Gorsuch – President Donald Trump’s nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court – has repeatedly failed to protect the rights of students with disabilities. Gorsuch is set to testify before the U.S. Senate Monday. National Education Association President Lily Eskelsen García, who taught students with special needs during her 20-year classroom career, says everyone should be concerned by the trend in Gorsuch’s record. “He’s endorsed the lowest expectations for students with disabilities, and he’s allowed schools to provide our highest need students with the bare minimum of an educational benefit,” she states. Reports from the NEA and the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law point to one case as an example where

an autistic student’s progress was dramatically reversed after switching schools. The parents sued the second school district, but Gorsuch sided with the district, ruling the student was only entitled to make progress that was slightly above the lowest possible standard. Mark Murphy, the Bazelon Center’s managing attorney, says Gorsuch’s de minimus – or minimum standards – rulings show Gorsuch is not sensitive to, or doesn’t understand, the legal rights of people with disabilities. “It really reflects really low expectations for kids with disabilities,” Murphy asserts. “I think it’s fair to say that no parent of a child without a disability would be happy if the school district said that they only had to provide a de minimus level of education for them.” Garcia adds while parents and civil rights advocates rely on rules designed to

New reports show some rulings by President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee have allowed schools to use force against and to isolate students with disabilities. (Wikimedia Commons) end abusive practices, she says Gorsuch seems to have an antagonistic view toward agencies charged with protecting kids at risk. “Why wouldn’t you want to be on a parent’s side when they say, ‘We know what

benefits our children because we saw it in this school, and we’re not getting it in the second school,’” she points out. “Why wouldn’t you be on the side of parents?” The reports also show Gorsuch’s rulings have

allowed schools to use force and to isolate students with disabilities, despite studies showing that these students, especially students of color, are disproportionately subjected to the practice in schools.

personal freedom and being able to live a life you want. And this bill will help transgender people to be able to live a life free from discrimination.” Reinsch notes under current law, a transgender person must undergo surgery and appear before a judge to prove their identity. House Bill 1122 would only require a note from a health professional supporting the change. Two previous attempts to update the state’s rules did not clear the Senate, where some opponents have said the move could lead to fraud or identity theft. Reinsch adds the bill would put Colorado in sync

with current federal policies for updating gender on a passport or Social Security card. “The federal government uses this process that the bill would put in place for folks to update the gender on their passport or Social Security card,” she explained. “So if there were real, valid concerns about fraud, the federal government and all these other states would not be using this process.” Reinsch says her group and others will be contacting members of the Senate’s State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, urging them to give the bill a fair hearing.

Birth Certificate Bill Faces Uphill Battle in Senate

A new bill that would make it easier for Coloradans to change the gender on their birth certificate faces an uphill battle in the Colorado Senate. (David Prasad/Wikimedia Commons) DENVER – The Birth Certificate Modernization Act cleared the Colorado House with bipartisan support last week, but now it faces an uphill battle after being assigned to the Senate’s unofficial “kill” committee. The new law

Tennis Anyone?

Indian Wells Tennis Gardens Stadium. Photo by Jackie Devereaux Story and Photos by Jackie Devereaux Indian Wells, CA - The attitudes of the amateur tennis players may have appeared laid-back because of the sweltering 95 degree heat, but the excitement in their eyes spoke volumes about what was really in their hearts. –“We’re here to have fun, to watch world-class tennis, and to win!” said Diane Lowings, from a U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) team from

New Orleans, Louisiana. The USTA approved teams from across the nation to converge at the BNP Paribas Open held here for its 42nd annual event in the Southern California desert. Over the last weekend, Lowings’ team, representing the Southern Region, played a team from Chicago, Illinois, representing the Mid-West Region. Each team had different criteria to advance in the circuit. “We had to beat out a

series of other contenders to get to these finals. Yesterday, we played an Inner Mountain team from Boise, Idaho, and beat them to advance,” she explained while her fellow team members Dawn Vincent, Keri Becker (Captain and Team Photographer) waited and rested in the shaded picnic areas adjacent to the Tennis Garden Village for their turn on the open-air courts. When asked how long the women have been playing

tennis, Lowings admitted she only started three years ago, while team captain Becker has been playing for 14 years. “They said I looked athletic, and they needed someone to play, so here I am,” Lowings said. All the women looked fit and trim – they all had the kind of body a tennis player should have. Then, over the loud speakers their names are called to an open court. The women slowly stood up, stretched their legs, arms and backs before collecting their sports gear and heading to their court to play their next round. Sitting nearby in the picnic area was another group of females from Chicago, Illinois: Danielle Balzano, Leslie Buch, Lee Koepke, Alison Miller, Dena Balzano here for a second year of play. When asked how and why did they come to play at Indian Wells, team captain Danielle Balzano said, “We play divisional teams, then Mid-West sectional teams which takes a whole year.” After beating those teams, they win a spot at Indian Wells. There are nine to 11 people on each team, but the USTA limits the number of players on each team to 10. Each team member pays their own airfare, hotel, meals and entry fees. “We’re supposed to get $50 back on our $200 entry fee,” Balzano said.

Indian Wells Tennis History – Who Knew? Story and Photos by Jackie Devereaux Indian Wells, CA – The BNP Paribas Open has been around for 42 years! Who knew? Apparently, plenty of people from all over the world with a passion and love for tennis know about this event. While the four grand slams (Wimbledon, French Open, Australian Open and U.S. Open) get all the media attention, this event appears to be the players and fans favorite – and there’s plenty of reasons why. Last year alone more than 438,000 fans converged on the Southern California desert to enjoy two weeks of the highest level of competition of professional and amateur tennis. According to the BNP Paribas Open official tournament program, it conducted its 42nd men’s event and 29th women’s event this year. The events were held on consecutive weeks from 1989 through 1995 before combining for simultaneous play in 1996. This year marks the 21st year that the men and women competed concurrently. But better and more tennis is not the only thing the tournament brought to the desert. In 2014, the BNP Paribas Open generated more than $373 million in economic impact for the Coachella Valley. Back in 2009, the newly named BNP Paribas Open announced that Larry Ellison, co-founder and CEO of Oracle Corporation, had become the new owner of the event and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. That’s when the world of tennis changed. Ellison hosted lavish charity events to benefit the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development fund to help those devastated by the January 2010 earthquakes. In 2011, Ellison installed the Hawkeye electronic line calling systems on every match court, including qualifying matches,

making Indian Wells the only tennis venue in the world to offer the state-of-the-art technology. In 2012, he upped the ante by being the first and only ATP World Tour and WTA combined event to offer $1 million in prize money to each of its singles champions. Then, an historic expansion project with technological and construction upgrades to Stadium 1, and a streamlined construction of a new 8,000seat Stadium 2, which was completed in 2014. HOROSCOPES ARIES

You shift from instinctual knowing to searching for selfidentity. You need both. All of our identities are changing as the world is changing. We are all reflecting the shifts in our world. Unless we’re stranded in the old-world realities. But now you. You’re always initiating new thoughts and ideas. You know how to apply yourself responsibly to all challenges ahead.

TAURUS You might be feeling different these days, vulnerable, tender, nostalgic, inflamed, exhausted, unable to sleep or sleeping too much. Your digestion may be off, your eyes tired, your stamina lessened. Be very careful with diet. Learn what your dosha (Ayurvedic constitution) and blood type are and eat accordingly. No nightshades. Seeking alternative health care will help. You are valuable, we need you. Stay healthy.

GEMINI I often wonder what your dreams and visions are. Visions propel us into the future. They are based on desires and aspirations. When we envision things, we create a magnetic field around that vision and it “calls” things to us. Some of us no longer have visions. We have despaired of visions ever coming true. Where are you

It is providing you with light; the light of accomplishment, right action, sense of achievement, service. Your presence helps others feel secure enough to move forward. This is an important task and identity. We know you’re shy. We know you notice.

LEO Your sense of justice stands alongside your sense of adventure. You need the adventure, the rest of the world, including the kingdoms, need justice. And so, you shift from self to the world and back again until the two synthesize and you simply become the adventurous one creating a just world. New groups around you form. Leo’s are leaders. Rogue Machine Presents Another Hit – “Still Life” by Alexander Dinelaris

L-R: Laurie Okin as Carrie Ann with Jennifer Sorenson as Mary and Nardeep Khurmi as her husband, the good doctor Sean. Photo by John Perrin Flynn If ever there was a compelling argument for the merits of the 99-Seat Plan, the production of Rogue Machine’s West Coast premiere of Alexander Dinelaris’ “Still Life” could be the poster child for that argument. The playwright has a long string of hits including co-writer of “Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance,”) which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Under the powerful direction of Michael Peretzian, who assembled a highly professional cast, the storyline revolves around the key character of Carrie Ann, a gifted but troubled young woman beautifully brought to life by Laurie Okin. Her performance illuminates the multi-level complexities of her character. Following the death of her father, played by Frank Collision, and a successful exhibit, which displayed a number of photographs of dead chickens, she experiences a psychological paralysis and is unable to pick up her camera. Her despair is illuminated in the opening scene, which is performed on an almost bare stage with only a chair and a podium. She is the guest speaker at the Ramirez Family Foundation, an engagement arranged by her manager Joanne, nicely played by Susan Wilder who captures the aggressive, sometimes cold nature of her character. It’s business first, no matter what. Carrie Ann is suppose to discuss her photographs, but instead goes into a rampage and storms off the stage. Staying with the chicken theme, the action shifts to a discussion between Terry, the head of a marketing firm that does trend analysis, and his creative guy, Jeff. Terry, deliciously portrayed by

10

DesertSTAR

Jonathan Bray, captures the outright, pure sleaziness of his character. He has an irreverent comment during even the saddest moments. Jeff, skillfully played by Lea Coco, is the extreme opposite of his crass boss and embodies the depth and sensitivity of his character. Taking a piece of chicken out of a bucket, Terry comments on how greasy the chicken is: “It’s how you know it’s good.” Eventually, a really cheesy commercial is created, likening eating fried chicken to having a good family life. Terry and Jeff attend the opening night of Carrie’s exhibit. Terry makes a vulgar comment about the artist’s ass while Jeff is taken with the sadness of the photographs of dead chickens. He approaches Carrie asking her why she took those particular pictures and thus begins their romance. I should mention that giant reproductions of photos, clearly taken in Africa of indigenous natives, are flashed on screens flanking stage left and right, the reason for which becomes clearer later in the play. We now meet Jeff’s best friend Sean who is a doctor, played quite sympathetically by Nardeep Khurmi. He has to give Jeff some bad news about the result of a test, the prognosis of which slowly seeps in. Trying to continue to live a normal life, Jeff and Carrie are guests at the home of the good doctor and his outspoken wife Mary, played by a versatile Jennifer Sorenson who also plays multiple rolls. Drinking wine and laughing, the discussion begins to center on the progress of the women’s movement and its place in today’s society. This kind of political dialogue is always on a slippery slope in danger of sliding into diatribe.

However, thanks to the excellent script, and actors who really own the words of their respective characters, that particular scene absolutely does not fall prey to the dangers inherent in such dialogue. Another slippery slope scene is between Jeff and Sean, which is definitely a one-Kleenex moment. Jeff asks, “What will happen?” Sean answers, “Nothing. You’ll just go to sleep… See you on the other side.” It’s been one of my contentions that so many plays have a weak Act II, but this is not the case in “Still Life” which has a very compelling second act as it explores what happens to the relationship between Carrie and Jeff as a result of his illness. They are very much in love and Jeff tells her “You are every woman I’ve ever dreamed of.” Again, what could have been soupy dialogue comes off as a genuine declaration of his love. At the same time Jeff is struggling with his health, Carrie is offered an assignment by National Geographic to do a shoot in Tanzania. Both her manager and Jeff insist that she take the assignment, which by the way, would necessitate her using a camera which she is not done since her father’s death. As her father was dying, he confessed that “It’s cruel to realize you are mediocre at the end of your life,” assuring Carrie that while he is not gifted, she truly is. Eventually, even though she doesn’t want to leave Jeff, she consents to take the assignment and invites Jessie, a young talented photography student to go with her. A most adorable Tania Verafield delivers a wonderful performance as the intense, extremely verbose young woman who comic utterances March 22, 2017

Carrie Ann (Laurie Okin) with Jeffrey (Lea Coco) become smitten with each other. Photo by John Perrin Flynn fall squarely into the streamof-consciousness category. Going on the premise that there was pain in Terry’s life to cause him to be the horrible person he is again, because of the compelling writing, there is an explosive explanatory scene in a bar between Terry and the bartender Al, played meticulously by Sorenson, who in no way resembles Sean’s demure wife Mary. Terry is very drunk on whiskey and snorting cocaine. He is a belligerent drunk and verbally attacks Al for her being a lowly bartender. He tells her she’d be better off being a prostitute. His drunken ramblings reveal that he was a battered child and was molested by his father. One can begin to understand the root cause of his despicable behavior. That reverie, however, would last only a few seconds before he reverts back to his “normal,” hostile way of communicating. To prove her ultimate willingness to become a prostitute, he offers the barkeep $300 if she would let him touch her breasts. What follows are some interesting moments with a few unexpected surprises. Carrie returns from Africa too late to see Jeff for one last time, but what happens to her as a result, catapults her back to picking up her father’s camera which she had given to Jeff. Her shot is beautifully tragic and perhaps reflects the playwright’s intention of showing how

Carrie’s tragic loss propelled her to get unstuck and move forward with her life. In addition to casting a very talented ensemble of actors, director Peretzian assembled an excellent production team beginning with Tom Buderwitz’s minimalistic, but quite effective set design, nicely lit by Leigh Allen. Adding to the overall look of the production is Nicholas E. Santiago’s video design, Christopher Moscatiello’s sound design, and Halei Parker’s costumes, especially the stunning wardrobe won by Susan Wilder’s character of Joanne. This is a story that will make you laugh, make you tear-up, and make you cheer. It also shines a light on the true nature of love as expressed under the saddest of circumstances. Dance Divas Ultra Naté, Martha Wash to Rock CC

Martha Wash

Ultra Naté. Photo by Karl Giant

By Anthony Grant Cathedral City has lent little to pop culture besides a funny name (there is, after all, no cathedral) but that might change March 24 and 25 when two of the biggest names in American dance music, Martha Wash and Ultra Naté are set to perform here. While each iconic singer – Wash is perhaps most famous as one-half of The Weather Girls with their 1982 smash hit, It’s Raining Men and Ultra’s is the powerhouse voice behind 1997s hit Free – has a body of work that merits a whole concert on its own, they’re coming to town to celebrate something even bigger, and that’s the third annual Cathedral City LGBT Days. The three-day bonanza, March 24-26, will unfold on the festival lawn by Cathedral City’s City Hall and at various area establishments (for a full and updated calendar

of events, check out www. cathedralcitylgbtdays.com). We’re talking a Battle of the Bars, a Bed Race presented by Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa and hosted by Bella da Ball and more, but the highlights for many will surely be the chance to hear Ultra, the opening-night kick-off party headliner, and Wash, Saturday’s main stage headliner. For a taste of what to expect, we caught up with each from their homes in the frosty East, starting with Wash, who began her musical career at the age of two in her parents’ church in her native San Francisco, and defies all cultural climatechange—not just because of the Weather Girls connection. What can people expect to hear on the main stage Saturday? “I’ll be performing my classic songs,” she says. In addition to the Weather

Girls classic, these include Strike It Up, Everybody, Everyboy Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now), and I Don’t Know Anybody Else. And more! Your music has definitely touched a lot of people through the years. “It has. Some people say ‘my parents played your music, and I say that’s cool. That’s how you learn! What are you most looking forward to at the Cathedral City LGBT Days? “Just looking forward to everybody coming out and having a great time!” Festival goers may also be treated to tracks from her album Something Good and Show Some Love, a great “First Ladies of Disco” song released through Wash’s own label, Purple Rose Records. As for Ultra Naté, the musical chameleon has embraced a variety of sounds

over the years, from R&B/ hip-hop, soul and disco to house, rock and electropop. Her music videos, by the way, are fierce. What can people look forward to at her performance? “I always mix it up: I have a vast body of music, so I try to put it all together in a way that’s cohesive that gets all the hits in there but also some of the long-time faves from 1989 onward. People have their favorites from my more underground vocal stuff to my really commercial pop dance tracks, and I try to make it a truly broad sensibility that gets everybody in every place.” This is the 20th anniversary of your smash-hit Free. Can you tell us a little bit about that track? I was really targeting humanity when I wrote that song, and it still resonates with people. At this point, there’s a new generation that

has even grown up with the song, which is sort of scary when people tell me that! (laughs). But the reality is I’m so honored to have something like that in my catalog that touches people over and over again. It could really apply in the LGBT community, to women, to marginalize communities all over the world and the common thread that we all have. I think that’s what’s made it more than a dance-floor moment and stand the test of time. Musically, those melancholy guitar’s kind of strike a chord with you right out of the gate. We had the idea of then matching that guitar with another one with some angst; that’s the drive, the rhythm of what our lives are like. It’s all metaphorical for me; I’m very Pisces with that! What about your friendship with Boy George? I just love George, his voice and writing style too as he’s left of center in a lot of ways like I am. The way he wrote his music years ago helped validate my style because I was very left of center as a singer and songwriter. So, after you rock the desert is it back to the studio? I have just finished my next album project called Black Stereo Faith - BSF for short and its subsequent followup. I’m orking to get it out in late spring early summer this year! In the meantime, I am on the road continuously doing live performances and/ or DJ gigs while maintaining my underground dance event - Deep Sugar.

Drastic climate change in 2016 will continue this year By Desert Star Staff The impacts of global climate change made 2016 the warmest year on record, and signs point to a continuation of trends and further climate anomalies to come in 2017, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says. Ahead of World Meteorological Day on March 23, the WMO, a United Nations agency, has released its annual report, ‘State of the Global Climate’, detailing significant weather and climate trends across the world. Last year was the warmest on record, the WMO said, at 1.1C (33.98F) above the preindustrial period and .06C above the record set in 2015. Furthermore, global average sea surface temperatures hit an all-time high, as sea levels continue to rise and as Arctic seaice mass fell much below average for most of 2016, according to WMO SecretaryGeneral Petteri Taalas. “With levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere consistently breaking new records, the influence of human activities on the climate system has become more and more evident,” Taalas said. Each year since 2001 has been at least 0.4C higher than the long-term average for the period of 1961-1990, which is considered a base period of reference for global climate change science. The WMO said 2016 has continued warming trends that include a 0.1 to 0.2C increase per decade. The 2015-2016 El Niño was consistent with past El Niño years and “played an important role in the year’s climate and confirmed that,

Climate breaks multiple records in 2016, hottest year on record. Global impacts. Extreme and unusual trends continue in 2017 when natural variability interacts with anthropogenic climate change, the impacts on human societies and the natural environment can be severe,” the WMO said in the report. El Niño helped push global sea levels to record highs in 2016, the WMO said, as global sea ice extent fell by more than 4 million sq km below average in November. The WMO called the latter development “an unprecedented anomaly for that month.” Warm ocean temperatures helped exacerbate coral bleaching and mortality in many tropical waters, causing deep impacts on marine life, the WMO said. Noteworthy events of extreme weather in 2016 included severe droughts

that devastated southern and eastern Africa; abnormally heavy rains and floods that hit eastern and southern Asia; and Hurricane Matthew, which caused “significant damage” to Haiti and the United States. Extreme climate conditions will not abate in 2017, the WMO said. “Even without a strong El Niño in 2017, we are seeing other remarkable changes across the planet that are challenging the limits of our understanding of the climate system. We are now in truly uncharted territory,” said World Climate Research Programme Director David Carlson. The Polar equivalent of a heatwave has occurred at least three times already in 2017, the WMO reported, with

temperatures near ice-melting point. Antarctic sea ice has also reached record lows. These ice levels are causing major impacts to global oceanic and atmospheric weather patterns, the WMO said. “In the USA alone, 11,743 warm temperature records were broken or tied in February, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,” the report says. The report confirms the findings of similar analyses released by other top climategauging agencies, illustrating the grim year for the global climate that was 2016. In January, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA released a report stating that, for the third consecutive

year, all-time highs for average global temperature were reached in 2016. The WMO report said that implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change, a pact in which the Donald Trump administration has said it will not remain, is crucial for slowing global climate change impacts. “It is vital that its implementation becomes a reality and that the Agreement guides the global community in addressing climate change by curbing greenhouse gases, fostering climate resilience and mainstreaming climate adaptation into national development policies,” the report states.

Texas Lawmakers Push for National Constitutional Convention

By Desert Star Staff AUSTIN, Texas – Texas is among a growing list of states to consider seeking a convention to propose amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The Texas Senate, acting on a call by Gov. Greg Abbott, has approved a measure for a convention of states that would shorten the usual process of Congress approving amendments for the states to ratify. The idea now is pending before the Texas House, which has yet to act. Sanford Levinson, a constitutional law expert at the University of Texas School of Law, says legislators are using a little-known part of the constitution to try to make major changes. “If you ask most people how to get constitutional amendments, they’ll say through Congress,” he said. “But Article V does very, very clearly set out this alternative procedure called a constitutional convention, www.desertstarweekly.com

and it’s never been done.” Levinson says Article V contains no guidelines on how to conduct a convention, and that has legal scholars and others deeply concerned. Most backers are pushing for an amendment to balance the federal budget, but other issues could be considered. Others wonder if a convention should include lobbying interests in the process, and whether each state would get a vote or representation would be proportional to the population. Elaine Wiant, president of the League of Women Voters of Texas, says she is worried that the whole thing could quickly spin out of control. “Because there aren’t any rules and once you call a convention, there can be rules but the rules can be changed by the delegates, so that is a concern,” she explained. Levinson says while legal scholars might debate the

(Moussa81/iStockphoto) pros and cons of holding a convention, he thinks there may be a practical reason why it’s just not a good idea. “We’re just too divided, so that the most likely consequence of a convention, March 22, 2017

from this perspective, is simply a lot of shouting at one another and nothing happening,” he added. A constitutional convention needs 34 states, a two-thirds majority, to sign on. In recent

years, about 15 states have passed such legislation. Proposed amendments must be ratified by at least 38 states. The U.S. Constitution has been amended 27 times since 1787.

By Desert Star Staff Warmhearted and Witty Comedy/Drama Features Gloria Loring In Charming Story of Ann Landers as She Prepares Her Most Important Column PALM SPRINGS, CA. – Coyote StageWorks, the Coachella Valley- based award-winning Actors’ Equity professional theater company will conclude its 2016-2017 theatrical season with a production of “The Lady With All the Answers,” a popular one-woman play that will feature Coachella Valley favorite Gloria Loring as she portrays the beloved American advice columnist Ann Landers. The production will run April 14 – 23, 2017 with eight performances at the Annenberg Theater in the Palm Springs Art Museum. The fully staged play brings to life the wise, funny, nononsense woman whose daily dialogue with America helped shape the social and sexual landscapes of the last halfcentury. Tickets are $45 – $55 for matinees and $50 – $60 for evening performances. A Q&A session with cast members will follow the Thursday matinees. To purchase individual tickets or subscriptions, call 760-3254490 or visit annenbergtheater.

About “The Lady With All the Answers” This heartwarming comedy/drama by writer, playwright, actor and producer David Rambo gives us a chance to get up close and personal with “Eppie” Lederer, better known to the world as Ann Landers. This folksy, funny, and straightforward one-woman play is set in Eppie’s plush, traditionally furnished living room on a late night in 1975. Eppie ominously lets on in the show’s first few minutes that she is preparing to write the “most important column of my career.” But like many another journalist facing a deadline, she insists on exhausting all forms of procrastination before settling down to crank out her copy. Instead of rapping out those few momentous paragraphs, Eppie entertains the audience with cozy tales of her colorful history, interspersing these with readings of some of her favorite letters, including questions about nude housekeeping, sex in a motorcycle helmet, sibling rivalries, addiction, religion and wandering spouses. The play will star

renowned actress Gloria Loring, of “Days of Our Lives” fame, who blew away audiences with her awardwinning performance in the Coyote StageWorks production of “Love, Loss and What I Wore.” In “The Lady With All the Answers,” Loring will portray the popular advice columnist as she struggles to complete her latest installment while dealing with a new kind of heartbreak: her own. The Chicago Tribune calls the play “… warmhearted …highly entertaining, and frequently moving…” and the Los Angeles Times describes it as “…engaging from beginning to end.” The 2016-2017 Coyote StageWorks season is generously sponsored by Annette Bloch and David Lee. Earlier this year, David Lee also issued a $30,000 challenge grant that doubled any donation the company received. Donna MacMillan recently joined as the generous production sponsor. About Gloria Loring Gloria Loring is an actress primarily known for her role “Liz Chandler” on “Days Of Our Lives.” She has starred in several Movies of the Week, television specials, and theatrical productions,

including a national tour of “Anything Goes.” She is also a recording artist of the #1 hit song “Friends and Lovers,” and co-composed the television theme songs for “Diff’rent Strokes” and “Facts Of Life.” She has shared the stage with the Pointer Sisters, the Supremes, Billy Crystal, Bill Cosby, and Bob Hope, and performed on numerous award shows, including the Emmy Awards, Academy Awards, and Golden Globes. She is one of few artists to sing two nominated songs at the Academy Awards. She is a spokesperson

Although the latest titles featuring celebrated Austin bluesman Gary Clark Jr., groundbreaking British trio Depeche Mode, as well as a wonderful reissue teaming Bobby Darin & Johnny Mercer couldn’t be more different, all are terrific and showcase top-flight music making.

Mortgage Rates Hit Multi-Year Highs Ahead of Fed Meeting 7-year ARM to 3.81 percent. Mortgage rates spiked higher leading into this week’s Federal Reserve meeting, climbing for the third week in a row and the fourth time in the past five, rising to multiyear highs. The benchmark 30-year fixed mortgage rate hit the highest level since

April 2014 and it was a similar story across the range of mortgage products. But with a Fed rate hike now in the books and a recent decline in oil prices below the $50 per barrel threshold, this marks two factors that can take edge off inflation increases. That is comforting to longterm bond investors and potentially good news for mortgage rates. Indeed, this was the reaction in the hours immediately following the Fed rate hike, with yields on longterm bonds sliding about onetenth of a percentage point. At the current average 30-year fixed mortgage rate of 4.44 percent, the monthly payment for a $200,000 loan is $1006.25. SURVEY RESULTS 30-year fixed: 4.44% -up from 4.38% last week (avg. points: 0.28) 15-year fixed: 3.64% -up from 3.57% last week (avg. points: 0.24) 5/1 ARM: 3.60% -- up from 3.57% last week

(avg. points: 0.30) Bankrate’s national weekly mortgage survey is conducted each Wednesday from data provided by the top 10 banks and thrifts in 10 top markets. The survey is complemented by Bankrate’s weekly Rate Trend Index, in which a panel of mortgage experts predicts which way the rates are headed over the next seven days. The panelists are fairly evenly divided this week, with 36 percent expecting mortgage rates to continue falling and an equal 36 percent forecasting that mortgage rates will remain more or less unchanged over the coming week. The remaining 28 percent of respondents predict mortgage rates will resume their climb during the next seven days. Secret Service under investigation over more breaches

By Desert Star Staff Three security incidents at the White House in just over a week’s time has lawmakers demanding the Secret Service make “major structural changes.” Heading up the investigation is Congressman Jason Chaffetz of Utah, a familiar foe of the agency. Jonathan Tran, 26, scaled several fences at the White House and went undetected on the grounds for more than 15 minutes before the US Secret Service (USSS) was able to apprehend him on March 10. The USSS released a statement in the days following, saying that Tran was able to climb and hop a 5-foot fence near the US Treasury Department next to the White House, then he scaled an 8-foot vehicle gate and another a three-and-a-half foot fence near the East Wing. “The men and women of the Secret Service are extremely disappointed and angry in how the events of March 10th transpired,” the statement said. The agency said they are taking steps to prevent future breaches, including creating additional posts, implementing technology enhancements and new response protocols. In an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN’s “The Situation Room” on March 17, House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said that Tran was even “able to get up next to the White House, hide behind a pillar, look through a window, rattle the door handle.” “It’s just beyond comprehension,” Chaffetz said, “especially because it is not the first time this has happened.” Last year, Chaffetz faced retaliation while looking into

the Secret Service after two of its agents drove through an active bomb threat scene investigation. Dozens of agents, including 11 senior members, gained unauthorized access to Chaffetz’s own rejected 2003 application to the agency and leaked it to the press. The Department of Homeland Security ended up punishing 57 Secret Service agents over the violations. The recent breach prompted Chaffetz to send a letter to William Callahan, the acting director of the Secret Service, saying his committee will investigate the service. In the letter, Chaffetz, who is on the panel that oversees the service, questioned the agency’s security and requested surveillance videos from the recent breaches to ensure they would be preserved for upcoming investigations. The letter suggests that several allegations were not in the original affidavit from the Secret Service, including the fact that Tran triggered several alarms which were ignored, and “may have attempted entry into the building.”

“If true, these allegations raise questions about whether the agency’s security protocols are adequate,” Chaffetz wrote. The letter mentions a bipartisan report from the committee, which found that “Over the last 10 years, there have been 143 security breaches and attempted security breaches at secured facilities which resulted in an arrest.” “This just keeps happening - again, and again, and again,” Chaffetz said in an interview with Fox and Friends, where he promised that “major structural changes” will take place at the agency. Chaffetz recommended splitting up the Secret Service, with separate teams that would handle cyber missions and protective detail mission. Chaffetz also said that there is a bipartisan group exploring the idea of moving the Secret Service into the Treasury department, where it was before the Department of Homeland Security took over that function in 2003. This is the third time the White House has

been breached in an eight-day period. On Saturday, William Rawlinson, 58, was spotted in a prohibited area of the North Lawn of the White House at around 12:40pm. Police say they found Rawlinson behind an auxiliary security barrier that resembles a bicycle rack, yelling “nonsensical statements,” according to the Washington Post. That same day, Sean Keoughan, 29, was arrested after he drove up to a White House checkpoint in a car that was reported stolen in Virginia and told a Secret Service officer that “there’s a bomb in the trunk” while holding something in his right hand, according to Reuters. The Secret Service has also been in the news recently after an agent had a laptop with sensitive information stolen from their vehicle, and two agents are currently under investigation for leaving their post to take selfies with President Donald Trump’s grandson.

Udall Defends, Celebrates Free Press in U.S. Senate By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, D.C. -- New Mexico Sen. Tom Udall took President Donald Trump to task on the U.S. Senate floor Wednesday over his treatment of reporters and news organizations. Udall shared some of the history of journalism with fellow senators, and spoke about why a free press is crucial to a functioning democracy. His statement came during Sunshine Week, an annual observance of America’s open government and free press. Stewart Mizell III is an executive with USA Today and president of the American Society of News Editors, the group that founded Sunshine Week. “It’s a week-long celebration of a true right that

Udall decided to add his voice to, “thousands of Americans who believe that open government is their right.” In his presentation, Sen. Udall warned that a government that shrouds itself in secrecy can become an oligarchy. Mizell explained that the purpose of Sunshine Week is to recognize the role and importance of the news media in getting information to the public about the workings of government. This year’s theme is, “It’s Your Right to Know.” “It’s a critical element of the constitutional right to petition the government

and his husband Marty (Alan Berry). They are a committed, non-open marriage, couple who are comfortable in their own skins and with their marriage state. Following a dinner party with mutual friends, Marty has invited a young couple Gary (Cameron Shingler) and his partner of two years, Ben (J. Gazpar Ascencio) back to their home for nightcaps and conversation. Gary is hyped on the subject of bringing a baby into their relationship. Ben, on the other hand is not warm to the prospect of sharing his lifestyle or home with a baby. How these two couples maneuver the shoals and rapids of gay lifestyle in America, especially after too many glasses of wine and whiskey, is the meat of Padilla’s play Some may see echoes of “Virginia Woolf”, others might see shades of “God of Carnage”. And like those

plays, “Lovesport”, also has moments of comedy, pathos, poignancy, and resonance. It’s difficult to hit a home run every time at bat even for the best of pro baseball players Pro playwrights who direct their own plays, are not immune from the guilt of not being able to throw their ‘theatrical babies’ out with the bathwater, when it might be called for. “Lovesport” is relevant in today’s society with some excellent comedy lines, however, it’s in need of some tightening, pruning, and sharper

pacing. It also shoots itself in the foot with a lack of comedy energy. One could almost see it being performed without an intermission if tweaking here and there were done. Jerome Elliott is more familiar to desert audiences and his fans as a club and cabaret star. So his Josh portrayal will come as revelation to them, as it was to me. Alan Berry, a former touring Rock ‘n’ Roll musician from the desert, plays Marty, as a spouse that anyone would be happy to have around the house 24/7. There is nice

on-stage chemistry between Elliott and Berry, which helps set the tone of the play. Cameron Shingler, has the unenviable role of playing the nagging spouse who wants a baby to care for and raise even after his partner makes it quite clear that he’s not interested. Both gay and straight couples have been coming to grips with this issue for millennia. J. Gazpar Ascencio, plays the ‘heavy’ as Ben. It was jolting in the short second act when Ascencio finally explodes in frustration in a scene with

Shingler. There is a lot of heated yelling taking place on that stage for a comedy. Sometime less is better making it easier for shaping and shading performances. “Lovesport” performs on the Pearl McManus stage at the Palm Springs Woman’s Club on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:00 PM and on Sunday at 2:00 PM until March 26, 2017. For reservations and ticket information call the box office at 760-565-2476.

By Desert Star Staff Seven years ago, our good friend Leslie Andrews traveled to Phoenix, Arizona to meet and write about One Foot in the Grave, a senior citizen punk rock band. Today in 2017, this same band will be coming to our neck of the woods, this time to Joshua Tree. JoDina is the woman behind the outfit. She has had this band going since 1990, with musical partner Gavan Weiser as her rock of support. They have had a long line of fellow seniors ranging from ages 60-80 perform with them in the early days, including one of Lawrence Welk’s guitar players in his big band. Two albums, “Who’s Your Embalmer?” (1992) and

“Old Farts” (1995) came about, Saloon in Joshua Tree, at featuring older musicians used the corner of Park Boulevard to the likes of Frank Sinatra and Perry Como playing modern punk rock. Sadly over the years, some of these band mates have died of old age, in their 90s, citing that JoDina added ten years to their lives. Currently, guitarist Dan Wall has remained in the band, joining in 2000 and is a favorite in the Phoenix hard rock scene. Gavan Weiser, the bass player who Leslie met in 2010, passed away in 2015 after battling Alzheimer’s disease. JoDina decided to carry on with at least one more show, maybe and hopefully more. One Foot in the Grave will be performing on Saturday March 25 at the Joshua Tree

and Highway 62 at 9pm, with Johnny Angel Wendell and

The Small Wonder Experience opening the evening.
