By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK — A new, 50-state study finds that putting more people in jail for drug offenses doesn’t reduce drug use or overdose deaths. On Monday, President Donald Trump called for harsher sentences, including the death penalty for drug traffickers, to combat the opioid epidemic. Jake Horowitz, director of research and policy at Pew Charitable Trusts’ Public Safety Performance Project, said they compared states’ drug imprisonment rates to rates of drug use, overdose death and drug arrests, and found no correlation at all. “These findings reinforce a large body of prior research that casts doubt on the theory that stiffer prison terms deter drug misuse, distribution and other drug law violations,” Horowitz said. New York, for example,

ranked 41st for drug imprisonment and had 11.6 overdose deaths per 100,000 residents - a relatively low ratio. But Louisiana, with the highest incarceration rate in the nation, experienced overdose deaths at a rate almost 44 percent higher than New York. But while increased incarceration rates have no significant effect on drug use, Horowitz noted that stiffer prison terms do have a dramatic impacts on everyone else. “Putting more drug law violators behind bars for longer periods of time has generated an enormous cost for taxpayers, but has not yielded a convincing public safety return on those investments,” he said. Since 1980 the number of Americans in state and federal prisons for drug law violations has exploded from fewer than 25,000 to more than a quarter-

violence, according to new analysis by Everytown for Gun Safety. The study found the majority of incidents “involve domestic or family violence.” Lydia Waligorski, public policy director for the Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence, says she isn’t surprised by the correlation. She notes that groups like hers have known for decades that if people with a history of violence have access to a firearm, there’s a much higher risk of fatalities. “Even the presence of a firearm in the home where there’s violence sends this message to the victims in the home that, ‘I can kill you at any time I want,’” she warns. Everytown looked at more

than 150 cases between 2009 and 2016 in which four or more people were killed, not including the shooter. In more than four out of ten cases, the killer showed “red flags” - threats, attempts or acts of violence, substance abuse or violations of protective orders. Gun advocates argue more firearms would prevent such incidents. For years, victims of domestic violence have been told they would be safe if they were armed, but Waligorski says the mere presence of a firearm in the home increases the risk of the survivor being killed by as much as 500 percent. She points to a series of recent shooting deaths of highly trained law-enforcement

officers in Colorado as evidence that good people with guns are not always able to stop one that’s bad. “When we add people that are not highly trained, that’s adding more risk,” she explains. “More guns has not been the answer for domestic violence and, unfortunately, I do not feel that more guns is a solution for our schools.” Waligorski cites extreme risk-prevention policies, passed by a handful of states, as one way forward. Designed to stop gun tragedies before they occur, the measures allow family members to petition a court to remove a person’s access to guns if they pose an imminent danger to themselves or others.

New Benefits and Insurance Options You Can Expect in 2018

By Desert Star Staff Ever wondered whether your insurance policy was actually working for you? You may be in luck, as your insurance plan may start to follow the same trends being adopted in other industries: simpler, more convenient and personalized products – all supported by the latest mobile technology. have and more of a given: • Telemedicine: Consulting with a physician and getting treatment online offers greater flexibility and may become essential to busy people. • Fraud protection: Identity theft is likely top of mind for policyholders and businesses. Expect to see better fraud protection, including ongoing internet monitoring and full identity restoration after a data breach. • Bill negotiation: The ever-changing health care system is often confusing to navigate. Ongoing education, as well as help understanding medical bills, can ultimately mean greater access to efficient, affordable care. Transformed Benefits: Insurance providers will likely shift the customer experience to follow that of retailers and other industries. In 2018, expect to see insurers such as Aflac offer more cohesive insurance policies that combine multiple benefit types into one plan. Beyond the Basics: You may find things that were once luxuries, such as 401K matching, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and even annual bonuses, are not as successful in meeting the expectations of today’s employees. As those expectations grow, successful businesses can continue to close the gap with such services as: • Health advocacy: Access to round-the-clock

personal health advocates who can answer health care and insurance-related questions. • Financial and legal fitness: Access to financial and legal advisors who can educate consumers on the preparation of wills and other legal documents. • College-advisory services: These might include resources to help lower college costs and navigate the admissions process. • No more “one-size-fitsall”: Communications from benefits providers may be more tailored to individual needs. • Bite-sized communications: Concise information about workplace benefits, tips for using benefits to help protect financial security and better explanations

of coverage combinations that are appropriate at various life stages. • New format: While some benefits information will still be delivered in the typical booklet format, more businesses may consider using online articles, digital signs, brown-bag luncheons and town halls. • Frequent communications: Employers may communicate about benefits throughout the year, or time communications to coincide with life events, such as employee anniversaries. Time Spent Smarter: In 2018, employers who have not yet adopted online platforms to manage benefits may do so. Advantages include yearround, convenient access to pertinent information and

one-page views of all benefits options and selections, enabling you to identify any holes you may have in coverage. Penny-Pinching: More voluntary benefits, such as accident, critical illness/cancer, hospital indemnity, life and disability insurance, are on the horizon. According to the 2017 Aflac WorkForces Report, 81 percent of employees see a growing need for voluntary insurance benefits, and 90 percent consider voluntary insurance at least somewhat part of a comprehensive benefits program. Thanks to a tech-driven world and the growing demands of consumers, 2018 may see insurers expand their services to offer even more convenience and personalization. StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff About a year ago, US President Donald Trump pledged to eliminate the national debt “over a period of eight years.” Treasury data now shows the debt has surpassed the $21 trillion mark this week for the first time in history. Last month Trump signed a suspension on the federal debt limit, allowing the government to borrow an unlimited amount of money until March 1, 2019. According to the Treasury

data, the national debt was $19.9 trillion when Trump took office on January 20, 2017. The $1.5 trillion tax cut bill and a two-year spending deal passed by the Congress are expected to drive the deficit and debt further upward. Despite the recent concerns that the US deficit was soaring under the Trump presidency, statistics show the national debt has been surging independent of party politics during this century. Under the previous administration of

President Barack Obama, the deficit nearly doubled, rising by about $9 trillion to just under $20 trillion. In its annual financial report, the US Treasury said last month the government lost over a trillion dollars in 2017. The huge sum constitutes the size of the entire Australian economy; it amounts to a loss of more than $2.2 million per minute. Tennessee Senator Bob Corker called the national debt the “greatest threat to our nation” when

it exceeded $20 trillion for the first time in September. In January, one of the largest ratings firms in China, Dagong Global Credit Rating, cut the US sovereign rating from A- to BBB+ on concerns that the country can fail servicing the debt. Peru, Colombia and Turkmenistan have the same rating with Dagong. The US Federal Reserve said this month national debt could reach $30 trillion in just 10 years, and that this should be cause for concern.

Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 29th Annual Desert Spirit was held on March 11th at the Heckmann Estate again this year. This is the Deserts Premier Gala to fight Cancer. The American Cancer Society’s event raised money for the fight against cancer in hopes of a cure. This event is one big party with top entertainment and 12 vendors with samples of their unique dishes. Each vendor had plates where guests could go from one vendor to another and hope they had room to taste it all. There was a massive bar as guests entered where they could get

refreshments of all kinds. Silent and Live auctions were held in between the entertainment and awards presentations Karen Devine served as Event Emcee, and Entertainment was provided by Dynamic Dave and New Sensations. There was a guest appearance by Michael Damian and an upbeat performance by the beautiful Bobbi Eakes. Event co-chairs were Sean and Tara Webb. Actor Sean Kanan and his lovely wife Michele were Honorary Chairs. The event honors several people. This year the Celebration of Life Honoree was Shay Moraga.

Marx is a performer, singer, Songwriter, and Producer. He said that most of the time he is asked to sing at these benefits, and he did it again for this crowd. His songs have reached the top 10 and won many awards. He spoke of a young girl with bone cancer that showed him true heroism. He even built a room in her

Each restaurant brought its own Chef to oversee the foods served. The Live auction was held

by Clint Bell, Auctioneer. Then The New Sensations Band got the guests up dancing. It takes many many sponsors to put on an affair of this size that brings people to the event. This is an outdoor gala with tables all over the lawn area. Guests mingled with friends and took photos of the giant backdrop. This is what they call a Fun Party that raises lots of money to eradicate Cancer. This disease hits all families and is a number one killer. The Finals of the BNP Paribas 2018 Open

Daria Kasatkina and Naomi Osaka-winner. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The BNP Paribas Open had one of the most exciting finishes to date. The fans got their monies worth on Sunday. It was a hard-fought battle between Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro. It was one of those matches for the history books. The game lasted for a long time. Del Potro won the first match. The second was a back and forth battle that ended in a tiebreaker. It went first to del Potro and then back to Federer who finally won that tiebreaker. The fans went wild as most of the people in the filled stadium were Federer fans. The third and final match was another exciting, on the edge of your seat, game.

Fans would yell after Federer made a huge shot and then the whole stadium would be completely quiet. Can you imagine thousands of people not saying a word during play? Roger Federer had his chance to win several times but always came up short. Double faults were his downfall. The match again came to a tiebreaker. This time Federer was unable to make a comeback to win. Del Potro was on the top of his game and came out a winner. He said he was still shaking when he spoke to the crowd at the trophy ceremony. The winner gets 1.3 million dollars, the same as the winner in the women’s match, which cannot be said in any other sport. The BNP Paribas Tennis

Glady Knight sang God Bless America when the local servicemen came out on the court with a huge American Flag. It was a fabulous rendition of the song. Knight put a lot of emotion into the song. I noticed that everyone stood with their hand over their heart while she sang. This event came in between matches. Tennis fans come from all over the world as this tournament is one of the largest in the U.S and considered the best by the players. There is a lot to see and do at the Tennis Gardens,

’Lady Bird’ Now on DVD

Nine films were nominated for an Oscar in the best picture category this year. If you haven’t had the chance to see them all, many are now available on DVD like “Dunkirk,” ”Darkest Hour,” “I, Tonya,” “Get Out,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing,Missouri’ and “Lady Bird’ starring Saoirse Ronan in the title role. “Lady Bird” was written by actress Greta Gerwig and the film also marks her directorial debut. Gerwig was nominated for an Oscar for her work. In “Lady Bird” she tells the story of a young Sacramento senior in a Catholic High School (Saoirse Ronan) who calls herself Lady Bird. When a priest asks her if that’s her given name she tells him “Yes, I gave the name to myself.” She is feisty, bright and eager to attend a college back east to get as far away from Sacramento as she can. She tells her parents she wants to be where real scholastic opportunities and culture can be found. However, her

mother (Laurie Metcalf, who won three Emmys for her work on TV’s “Roseanne”) feels it will be too expensive. She also tells her daughter she is “ a snob.” Undeterred, Lady Bird appeals to her father (Tracy Letts) for help. Because she is very special to him, he tells her he will do his best to see that she has enough money to follow her dreams. It is clear from the very start that there is tension between Lady Bird and her mother. Early on the two of them are driving in the car, listening to the radio, when the atmosphere changes from cordial to combative. Finally, when Ladybird has had enough, she unleashes her anger verbally before she opens the car door and falls out on the road much to her mother’s shock. In the process, Lady Bird breaks her arm. According to director Gerwig, the film deals with senior year experiences and romantic relationships, but “most of all the mother-

daughter relationship is the love story of the film.” “Lady Bird” is also filled with high school experiences, friendships, and romance. Lucas Hedges and Timothee Chalamet play the boys in her life. The head nun at her parochial school is Lois Smith. Purity is expected at all times at the school, as shown when a nun chaperone at a

school dance tells a couple to leave six inches between themselves for “the holy spirit.” Lady Bird’s best friend is a plump, cheerful Julie (Beanie Feldstein) who always sits next to her in class and the cool, wealthy Jenna (Odeya Rush) who makes the devoted Julie jealous. As the film progresses, Lady Bird heads off to college,

but will the experiences meet her expectations “Lady Bird” is rated R for language, sexual content, brief graphic nudity and teen partying. Running time: 1 hour, 33 minutes. Good News! This week Oscar winner for Best Picture, “The Shape of Water” will be available on DVD and Blu-ray.

#DeleteFacebook trending as users fume over the scandal $36 billion off the company’s valuation, and $5.5 billion off Zuckerberg’s fortune

By Desert Star Staff The hashtag #DeleteFacebook is trending after it was revealed that Cambridge Analytica bought data harvested from 50 million Facebook users and used it to target voters during the 2016 US presidential election. The data mining was revealed on Saturday by the Observer, which found that the firm – which worked with Donald Trump’s election team – bought the harvested data from a company called Global Science Research. Cambridge Analytica has denied knowing the data was improperly obtained. www.desertstarweekly.com

Facebook users weren’t exactly thrilled to find out that they had been analyzed in such a way. They’ve now taken to Twitter to express their anger under the hashtag #DeleteFacebook. The campaign is calling for users to unsubscribe from everything related to Facebook, including Instagram and WhatsApp. Stock market trader and political analyst @Ian56789 accused Facebook of being “part of the Big Brother system of control,” while referencing George Orwell’s novel ‘1984.’ He added that it sells data to governments and corporations, manipulates what see and don’t

see online, and “even tries to manipulate your current mood.” Author and physician Rachel Clarke took to Twitter to deliver a reversed version of the age-old break-up line to Facebook. “It’s not me; it’s you. Goodbye,” she wrote. Stand-up comedian Joe Heenan brought a bit of humor to the situation, saying that deleting Facebook would take away his ability to see “racist comments” from people he hated in high school. Meanwhile, Mark Davyd, founder, and CEO of the Music Venue Trust in the UK noted the irony of #DeleteFacebook trending on Twitter. In real music industry fashion, he highlighted that irony by including a screenshot from the music video of Alanis Morissette’s smash 1996 hit ‘Ironic.’ Others took the opportunity

to share their experience with deleting Facebook, encouraging others to do the same. “I deleted Facebook New Year‘s Eve 2014. It was the best decision I’ve made, and I can safely say I do not miss it. Life is so much better without it,” Twitter user @ CEdwardsEsq wrote. “I deleted my Facebook account over a year ago and noticed a substantial drop in anxiety. I did not realize how deeply entrenched I had become in what is essentially an addictive game with shit graphics,” Twitter user Kavus Torabi wrote. However, journalist and author Fabio Chiusi were less optimistic about the effect of deleting Facebook. “#DeleteFacebook if you wish, but please don’t pretend this is a solution to surveillance capitalism. What we need

is a restructuring of the data economy, not opening up a market for the next Facebook – which, btw, will be as bad, without changing the rules of the game.” Whether those who are deleting their Facebook accounts will stick to their commitment over the longterm remains unknown. For many, the desire to receive Happy Birthday messages from people they never speak to may prove to be too strong. Meanwhile, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg continues to remain silent while the company deals with a 6.77 percent drop in shares as a result of the breach. The fall knocked $36 billion off the company’s valuation, and $5.5 billion off Zuckerberg’s fortune, according to Forbes’ live tracker of the world’s wealthiest people.

5 Ways to Reduce Everyday Stress By Desert Star Staff Deadlines, responsibilities, bills -- there are so many causes of stress in our lives. Unfortunately, stress can take a negative toll on one’s health and wellness, particularly if it goes unaddressed for too long. Indeed, common effects of stress include headaches, stomach upset, anxiety, sleep problems and more, according to the Mayo Clinic. This April, which is Stress Awareness Month, consider these strategies for relieving stress. • Aromatherapy: Scent your home and workspace with stress-relieving scents like lavender, rosemary and peppermint. Whether you use candles, oils or fresh herbs, this is an

easy way to immediately reduce feelings of stress. • Get outdoors: Both exercise and nature can have stress-relieving properties. Combine the two with hiking, biking, and waterbased sports. Support your adventures with waterresistant wearable tech, like the WSD-F20 ProTrek Smart Outdoor Watch, which features functions like full color maps and GPS, app functionality to track progress, as well as sensor technology, allowing you to comfortably get off the beaten path and better appreciate your surroundings. • Meditate: Many experts agree on the benefits of meditation, from increased positive emotions to the relief of stress and anxiety.

And these days, meditation is more accessible than ever, as employers offer mindfulness programs in the workplace, mobile apps in guided meditation abound, and communities and fitness clubs add practices like tai chi and yoga to their rosters. • Enjoy music: Music can be an extremely powerful outlet for stress relief, particularly when you’re getting creative and making it yourself. Have the means at home to play a variety of beautiful music so that you can de-stress any time you need. To faithfully reproduce the sounds of acoustic instruments like guitars, drums, basses, brass, wind instruments, string ensembles and more, you don’t need

WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

Up Close & Personal With Patrick Schwarzenegger trust me, all the guys gave me input – do they like her, do they not like her, can she hang out with the boys. So it’s a vice versa situation.

Bella Thorne (Katie) and Patrick Schwarzenegger (Charlie) Photo Credit: Ed Araquel Out of the historic Kennedy clan has emerged yet another young “prince,” and his name is Patrick Arnold Shriver Schwarzenegger. The eldest son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, his family tree reads like the who’s who in American philanthropy and politics, ranging from Robert F. Kennedy, Ted Kennedy, and John F. Kennedy, to his maternal grandmother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who founded the Special Olympics, and his grandfather, Sargent Shriver, who was a United States Ambassador to France, the first director of the Peace Corps, and the Democratic nominee for Vice President of the United States under George McGovern in the 1972 U.S. presidential election. Patrick is taking a nonpolitical path and began his career as a model. He’s a local boy and was educated at the Brentwood School and received a degree from USC’s Marshall School of Business as well as a degree from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. In keeping with the philanthropic tradition of the family, with the help of his parents Patrick founded Project360 when he was 15, some of the proceeds earmarked for charitable donations. 24-year-old Patrick’s love of the world of film goes back to his childhood when he hung out with his dad on set and got bitten by the acting bug. He makes his film debut as Charlie in “Midnight Sun,” in which he co-stars with Bella Thorne as Katie Price. This is a touching story about a young girl with a terrible disease, how she copes with it, and how meeting Charlie brings her unexpected joy. Sensitively directed by Scott Speer from a screenplay by Eric Kirsten, the film co-stars Rob Riggle as Katie’s dad Jack and Quinn Shephard as her best friend Morgan. And yes. Do stuff

What influence did your dad have in your pursuing an acting career? Patrick: Obviously while I was growing up my dad made a few films. (Laughter) My favorite thing was I could ask him to take me to the set. He would pick me up early from school, throw me in the Hummer and we would drive to Universal. I wanted to stay there all day because I would watch movies, visit him in the make-up room, and watch him go from dad to “Mr. Freeze” or “The Terminator.” I would see something on paper become a reality in terms of film. During breaks we would jump in his golf cart and go on all the rides. I loved going to Craft Services and getting candy. (Laughter) This was when films were always shot in Los Angeles and he filmed at Universal Studios. So I loved going to sets and fell in love with film and always wanted to do film. I took some theatre classes at school. I think my parents always knew that I wanted to be an actor but they also wanted me to get an education. They wanted me to finish high school and go to college. I’m happy I did. My dad is obviously someone that had a path in acting, but also has the real estate and business side as well as the political side. You know with acting you can work for three months and not work for a year. So having other things you like to do during those down times is important. Did you have more fun on film sets than when you lived in Sacramento? Patrick: (He laughs) Sacramento? When my dad ran for governor, I was around ten so when you’re ten or eleven – (makes a weighing motion with two hands) the capital or movie sets? (Laughter) It was definitely a great experience. I got to learn a lot, but as a kid going to movie sets was more fun. On which set did you have the most fun? Patrick: A lot of the filming of “Terminator 3” was shot on the hillside near the Griffith Observatory so I got to go on a lot of hikes, but my favorite was when he was working on the Universal lot. You literally got to go to “King Kong” or “Jaws” and it was a dream come true for a kid. Your name: Does it help or hinder? Patrick: You can look at

anything in life as a positive or negative. I definitely like to see it as a positive. I’ve gotten to meet so many people from the film industry through my dad – people he’s worked with since he was a young actor. Does it help open up some doors for me? Well yes, but again like everything in life, if you’re not going to put the time in, if you’re not going to work hard, if you’re not dedicated, people will care only so much what your name is and then they’ll say “next.”

You and your dad are built quite differently. Where do you fall and did you have to train for the swimming sequences? Patrick: Well before this film, I loved weight lifting, I loved eating, I loved bulking up. But for this role, I lost almost 20 pounds because I stopped lifting and started swimming. When you start swimming, your body gets wider shoulders and a slimmer waist. I had someone from the USC swim team train me four days a week for the swimming sequences and I actually got pretty good at free-style swimming. What was your reaction when you watched the film for the first time and who did you watch it with? Patrick: I watched it with my friends and my family. It’s weird to see yourself on screen and to hear your voice. I was thinking, ‘Do I really sound like that?’ My mom and sisters were tearing up at the end, which made me happy, I guess. (Laughter) They really liked it and I’m really proud that I got to do this. How did your dad react to the film? Patrick: He’s proud. He actually shed a tear and I don’t know if it’s from the story or from just seeing me on the big screen. Kids want their parents to be proud of them and to be happy for them. My parents just want us to do what we want to do. My dad has always said to follow your passion. It’s not really work if you’re doing something you love to do. Congratulations. Your family has good reason to be proud of you. Patrick: Thank you…. *Sides: Excerpted pages from a screenplay that an actor can study and read to prepare for an audition or screen test. **XP: Xeroderma Pegmentosum
