Taylor Fritz upsets Rafael Nadal in Final Match at the Bank Paribas Open
By Richard Rowland The world’s best players competed the past two weeks at the BNP Paribas Open for the 45th edition of the ATP Masters 1000 event, held in Indian Wells, CA. New World No. 1, Daniil Medvedev, and three-time 2022 titlist, Rafael Nadal, led the way at the first Masters 1000 of the season. Crowds were back to the desert this season in full force to witness the event, as things returned to a high level of normalcy after the recent pandemic obstacles. This two-week event saw 475,372 fans in 2019, and this year’s attendance was close to that level, after cancellation in 2020, and a switch to October in 2021. San Diego native Taylor
Fritz upsets Rafael Nadal in the final, realizing his dream to win on home turf, after almost having to withdraw due to an ankle injury sustained in the semifinal match. Fritz worked with his team in warm ups and an on-site doctor for an hour prior to being able to compete in the Final Match. Fritz attributed his success against Nadal to his forehand, his serve, and success on the big points. A thrilling final match brought the conclusion to a great week in the desert for tennis and Fritz as an up and coming player. Fritz is the first American player to win this event in 21 years.
