Where no chopper has gone before: NASA to send a helicopter to Mars
By Desert Star Staff Not content with rovers, NASA’s next Mars mission will include a helicopter that will be the first human craft to fly around another planet and could potentially pave the way
for groundbreaking exploration on Mars and beyond. The Mars 2020 Rover will land on the Red Planet in early 2021 with a small helicopter on board, to test if it will be able to fly. Until now,
the only man-made objects that have visited Mars are rovers, orbiters and landers. The helicopter mission will last 30 days and will consist of five flights, some of which will simply be hovering tests,
just 10 feet off the ground. Should the first mission be successful, it could open up a whole new world of potential for planetary exploration. Currently, robotic explorers have been limited to the red planet’s surface and can’t get to every nook and cranny. “We envision helicopters opening doors to new types of exploration on Mars,” Håvard Grip, flight-control and aerodynamics lead for the Mars Helicopter said. “In the future, we could imagine doing things like regional exploration using multiple helicopters or going to inaccessible areas or biologically sensitive areas using small helicopters.” Mars has a far thinner atmosphere than Earth, meaning that flying just above the surface is the equivalent of being at 100,000
feet in Earth’s atmosphere. Helicopters usually fly at a max of 10,000 feet. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory created an extremely light chopper, weighing just four pounds, with blades that will spin at 3,000 rpm, 10 times faster than most ordinary helicopters. It was approved for the Mars mission in May and will be fitted with solar power batteries, and a heater. It isn’t just the thin atmosphere that presents a challenge for the chopper, though: the distance between Earth and Mars means there would be a communication delay of at least a few minutes, so the helicopter needs to be able to fly itself and stay in contact with the rover.
Viking Sky cruise ship safely arrives at Norwegian port after engine disaster
By Desert Star Staff A luxury cruise ship that was left floating due to engine failure and nearly crashed into the rocks in rough waters has safely arrived in the port of Molde on the west coast of Norway, with over 900 people on board. The Viking Sky was towed to safety by two tugboats, with one sailing in front of the vessel and the other behind it. The luxury cruise ship, which set sail with almost 1,400 passengers and crew aboard, sent out an SOS signal on Saturday. It was drifting in rough waters near a rocky coast after all its engines stopped working. At one point, it approached land at a distance of just 100 meters, with passengers posting dramatic photos. But the crew was eventually able to start one of the engines and avoided crashing. “If they had run aground, we would have faced a major disaster,” Hans Vik, the head of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre for southern Norway, told TV2. Rescue services airlifted 479 passengers onto a helicopter before the weather improved and the Viking Sky could be towed. Twenty people required hospitalization as a result, the vessel’s operators said. The passengers were mainly elderly citizens from the US and Britain. People on board shared ‘Titanic’-style videos and photos with panels falling from the ceiling and furniture, including tables, chairs, and even a piano, sliding back and forth. The passengers said they were terrified the ship would capsize as it helplessly drifted

in waves of up to eight meters. “We were having lunch when it began to shake. Window panes were broken, and water came in. It was just chaos,” an American passenger said in an interview with NRK. “The last few hours on board the ship were some of the most terrifying [moments] we have ever experienced,” another passenger added. Rescued passengers are describing horror-filled hours on board the Viking Sky cruise liner stranded in turbulent Norwegian sea waters. Videos from the ship show objects flying as waves crash against the vessel. The storm that started on Friday caught the ship off Norway’s coast and as it intensified on Saturday the engines broke down, two American couples, Leslie and Gary Collins, and Karen and Dennis Ferra, recalled. They were among the first passengers evacuated, but over 900 people remained on board until much later. “We feared more that the ship would capsize,” one passenger told local media. Videos posted online by other passengers show chairs, tables and other objects, including a piano and a planter, slide back and forth across the floor as high waves tossed the ship from side to side. “The last few hours on board the ship were some of the most terrifying [moments] we have ever experienced,” said the Americans, who have over 30 cruises behind them. In the meantime, the holidaymakers gave credit to the crew saying that there was no panic on board as the alarm went off. The captain promptly informed
people about the engine problem and ordered them to prepare for getting on the lifeboats, witnesses said. The rescue team, however, opted to use helicopters as gusty winds and huge waves made it impossible to approach the vessel by sea. The tourists were caught off-guard as they were invited to the deck to board
a helicopter. “One from the crew just came over to us and said: ‘Join me’,” they remembered, adding that the 30-meter high climb up to the helicopter was something they would not forget soon. “We had booked a new cruise in September, but I think we would cancel it,” the travelers said. The liner, which was
traveling from Bergen to London, had 1,373 people on board – 915 of whom were passengers from the UK and US. 479 people were evacuated via helicopters before the crew managed to restart the engines. Tugboats later hauled the ship to the nearby port of Molde.

Creating a Sound Cash Flow Forecast Enhances Business Success
By Janice Gough A poll by Kabbage, a business lender, found that thriving US small business owners better understand their cash flow issues, which secures long term success. A third of them started with less than $5,000. Traits like self-confidence, grit, and determination are what drives the most success for small businesses. Confidence is the most important. Although many entrepreneurs have the desire it takes, they admittedly have the least amount of experience in financing and bookkeeping, legal and compliance, and

marketing and advertising, when starting their business. Ask any small-business owner, and you’ll be told that having plenty of cash in the bank is probably the best indicator of our financial health. But managing cash flow continues to be one of the most significant issues business owners face. Almost two-thirds of small-business owners are “regularly stressed’ or have anxiety due to cash-flow concerns. According to a recent survey of more than 500 entrepreneurs, many have gone as long as six months without receiving a paycheck. This is the primary reason that many small businesses do not make it past the first three years. Some owners will consider that the stress is not worth it. Most businesses today are benefiting from a strong economy, and it is an excellent time to build reserves to manage future expenditures. Doing so would help when deciding whether you can afford to hire that next employee, make that capital investment, or commit to a large inventory purchase. How much cash should a small business minimally have in reserve? Many believe that a business should maintain cash reserves to cover operations over a three- to six-month period. This is a general rule of thumb. However, every small business is unique and has its own cash-flow needs,
based on its operational model and the business cycle. As a business owner, you should be able to make reasonable estimates of the future income needs based on the past business cycles. Many businesses have a period in which greater capital is needed for expenditures. For example, a manufacturer that buys materials at specific times during the year, a retailer that purchases greater inventory before holidays, or you may run a restaurant in a resort area that has an Offseason. Whether you are a startup or stabilized business, your business is subject to specific industry needs and should have adequate financing available. You may be subject to significant capital expenditures and seasonality or unknown sales patterns. The right reserve, be it three, six or more months of cash, depends on how much you spend now and what you plan on spending in the future. It’s important not only to get a handle on your monthly expenses but also to prepare a forecast or budget. Start by reviewing your revenues and expenses, by month, over the last 12 months. Then add in your cash balance today and look to the future. Using what you know from the past, forecast these monthly amounts over the next 12 months, with each month showing your available cash at the end. Make sure to include
significant cash expenditures such as estimated taxes, loan repayments, planned capital expenditures, or other unusual, seasonal or one-time items. Be realistic but also conservative. By forecasting a best case and a worst-case scenario, it will allow you to prepare for any unknown contingencies. It’s a critical benchmark for running your business. Also, having too much cash may mean you’re not making the best use of your capital and available lines of credit, and it could establish a false sense of comfort. Having too little can restrict growth, create stress, and ultimately cause you, like so many other business owners, to potentially go without a paycheck. Cash flow and run rate uncertainties are all too typical among small business owners. But while small business owners may seem daunting, today’s funding options open opportunities to
Associations Have Options By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Choosing management assistance is one of a board’s most important decisions. Even the smallest associations will benefit from some form of professional management. What is a “Manager”? Managers carry out the association’s day to day operations, advising and providing information to the board and carrying out its policies and instructions regarding association property and funds. A manager may be an unpaid volunteer or may be paid. The paid manager may be an association employee, a consultant, or an employee of an outside company. In California, no license is needed to manage HOAs. Volunteer management. Many associations use volunteers for their management functions. The motivation for volunteer management is primarily to save cost. In volunteer management, volunteers place themselves in the role of an unpaid manager - with all of its risks and no
reward. Volunteer managed associations often find it difficult to find candidates for the board, since directors work so much harder when they are also managers. Financial Management. This involves collecting assessments, paying bills, and preparing monthly and annual financial reports, disclosures, and budgets. A financial manager typically does not visit the property. Management companies often prefer financial management because it is more predictable and less prone to the extra work of managing the property. Some accountants also offer financial management services. Associations struggling with the cost of full association management may wish to consider at least financial management. Property Management. Property management involves responsibility for keeping up the condition of the buildings and grounds and may include routine inspections for architectural violations, maintenance items and repair needs. The plumbing leak on a Sunday afternoon and the broken window on Tuesday evening are all part of the routine March 27, 2019
for a property manager. Property management, when coupled with financial management, is called “full management.” Some associations choose to hire one company for financial management and another for property management services. Full management services normally cost significantly more than only having financial management. Off-site/On-site. Most associations are managed by persons working at a location at a management firm office. Some companies provide managers who work on site, at a greater cost. On site managers may provide a higher level of service for that greater cost. Portfolio vs. General Manager. Portfolio managers simultaneously work for multiple associations, while general managers work for just one. Most associations cannot afford general managers. An important question to the portfolio manager is “how many other associations will you handle along with ours?” A lower management fee can result from a company overloading its managers. For some, cost is the only concern but that can relate to the
handle cash flow better and smooth those uncertainties. quality of personnel and level of service. Ask questions, and make sure your association understands what it is receiving. HOAs get what they pays for. In-house management. Larger associations may choose to hire their manager and staff as direct employees. This gives the association more control of its management at less cost than the rates charged by a management firm for the staff it provides. The drawback is the opposite side of the coin - the association takes on the responsibility of finding and screening management candidates and supervising them as employees. Choose the management style best serving the community’s interests and needs, rather than automatically selecting the lowest bidder. Next week, Part II: Manager qualifications. Kelly G. New Research Confirms ‘You Are What You Eat’
By Desert Star Staff ST. PAUL, Minn. – New research suggests that what you eat could be the fountain of youth for heart health. It’s known that a healthy “gut” can contribute to a strong immune system and even improve mood and healthy sleep. But now, a new study from the University of Colorado also suggests “gut health” has long-term impacts on vascular aging. Research by lead author and postdoctoral researcher Vienna Brunt found that changes in microorganisms that live in the gut are connected to cardiovascular disease, which opens up a new avenue for potential interventions. “So this study, for the first time, establishes a link between adverse changes in the gut microbiome and changes that occur to the arteries as we age, which can then increase the likelihood
of developing cardiovascular diseases,” says Brunt. The research showed that when a cocktail of antibiotics was used to kill off gut bacteria in young mice it had no affect, but when used on old mice for three to four weeks, their blood vessels and arteries resembled those of the young mice. The study recently was published in the Journal of Physiology. The American Heart Association says the risk of cardiovascular disease starts as early as age 45, and 70 percent of people in the U.S. show signs of the impairment starting in their sixties. By age 80, four out of five people show diseased arteries. Brunt says why that happens is still a mystery, but her research suggests it wouldn’t be a bad idea to eat more pro- and prebiotic foods such as yogurt, garlic and asparagus. “It’s been established
The phrase “You are what you eat” was coined in 1826, but new research suggests pro- and prebiotic foods could help starve cardiovascular disease. (pixabay/anaterate) for a while that healthy diets can promote gut microbiome health, and so that is likely the best place to start looking for interventions that we can use to target gut health
as we age,” says Brunt. Brunt says antibiotics were used in the study as an experimental tool, but due to their side effects, she does not advocate for
antibiotics as a cardiovascular fountain of youth and instead recommends a healthy diet to reduce the inflammation that often leads to disease.
Report: Early-Childhood Educators Lack Health Insurance
Statewide, 1-in-5 early-childhood educators is without health insurance, according to a new report. And in some rural North Carolina counties, those numbers may be even higher. (kinni72nni72/Twenty20)

March 27, 2019
By Desert Star Staff WAKE FOREST, N.C. -- Early-childhood educators are finding themselves choosing between basic needs and health care. The median salary for child-care workers in North Carolina is not quite $21,000 - too high to qualify for Medicaid but leaving many early-childhood educators in the gap. A new report from one group that advocates for Medicaid expansion in North Carolina interviewed early-childhood educators from across the state, and 1-in-5 said they don’t have health insurance. One educator who asked to be referred to as “Eryka,” said she plans her budget very carefully each week for rent, food, electricity, and gas to get to work. But buying private health insurance is far out of reach for her. She said that means she goes to work even when she’s sick. “Most of the time, I kind of just have to ride it out and hope I get better. Otherwise, I am going to the ER, wasting their time, or the urgent care, wasting their time, for something small,” Eryka said. “If I had strep throat, I have to go pay $75, $100, to go to urgent care just to get antibiotics. Nothing is easily accessible when you don’t have good health insurance.” Two measures in the state Legislature, House Bill 5 and Senate Bill 3, would raise the income level for those eligible for Medicaid. Senate Leader Phil Berger, R-Eden, took aim at provisions in both bills, saying it represents a tax that
ultimately will be passed on to patients and taxpayers. Bills in the House and Senate propose to use federal funding to expand access to Medicaid, as 37 other states already have done. Leaders from both parties and the governor have different approaches to increasing access to health care, but would need to reach a compromise in order to actually pass legislation this session. Statewide, it’s estimated that 500,000 people are in the “coverage gap,” earning too much for Medicaid. Among them are thousands of earlychildhood educators such as Meranda who said that while she enjoys working with toddlers, the fact that she’s been uninsured for more than a year is frustrating. “If they expanded Medicare, it would be such a huge burden lifted off,” Meranda said. “Then I wouldn’t have to worry about getting sick and how long I am going to stay sick for. Am I going to get OK, or is this something serious because I have cancer that runs in my family. All four of my grandparents had it, my great-grandparents had it, my mother had it.” Members of the Early Childhood Advisory Council appointed by Gov. Roy Cooper wrote to legislators last week to share how expanding Medicaid to close the health-insurance coverage gap can help the state’s more than 1 million young children.

Joan Jett & The Blackhearts with Special Guest Elle King
By Desert Star Staff INDIO, CA – Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, will be joined by up and coming country-rock singersongwriter Elle King for an incredible night of music at The Special Events Center at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on Sunday, May 26, 2019. Joan Jett is an originator, an innovator, and a visionary. As the leader of the hardrocking Blackhearts, with whom she has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she’s had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.” Her independent record label, Blackheart Records, was founded in 1980 after she was rejected by no less than 23 labels. Blackheart is one of the longest running indie labels and continues to give voice to new bands. Jett has acted in movies and television, including 1987’s Light Of Day, and in a Tonynominated Broadway musical, The Rocky Horror Show. Her music has become a permanent force in mainstream culture. A version
of “I Hate Myself for Loving You” was reworked for NBC’s Sunday Night Football theme song, “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night”, and was performed for 9 seasons by the likes of Pink, Faith Hill and Carrie Underwood. Her music is heard in countless films and TV shows including Easy - A, Kick Ass, The Runaways, Shrek, Baby Mama, and many more. Multi-platinum and Grammy-nominated recording artist Elle King released her critically-acclaimed second album, Shake The Spirit in October 2018, featuring current single “Baby Outlaw.” Shake the Spirit is the follow up to her debut album Love Stuff which featured her breakthrough single “Ex’s & Oh’s,” and earned her two GRAMMY nominations and was certified double platinum. The track hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs Chart, and topped the AAA, Hot AC, and Alternative Radio charts, leading King to become the second female artist in 18 years to reach No. 1 at the latter format. She was also featured on Dierks Bentley’s GRAMMYnominated No. 1 Country Airplay hit “Different For Girls” (she performed it with
Bentley at the CMA Awards and took home an award for “Musical Event of the Year”). King also performed for President Obama in honor of Mavis Staples at the 2016 Kennedy Center Honors. Shake The Spirit lead single “Shame,” became her fourth radio #1 single and led Elle to become the only act in history to have scored number 1 singles on the Adult Pop Songs, Adult Alternative Songs, Alternative Songs and Country Airplay charts. Her new single “Baby Outlaw,” is currently Top 10 at AAA Radio. Rolling Stone wrote of her Austin City Limits live set: “Elle King is a little bit country, a little bit rock n’ roll, but ultimately, she’s punk as fuck.” Variety wrote of her Philadelphia Shake The Spirit tour date “…King churned the clotted cream of punkish country, raw R&B, crotchety rock and deep blues into rich, buttery musical drama with her band, The Brethren.. (she) belted, crooned, purred, sauntered and swaggered her way through a tautly rocking set…one thing became very clear: nearly every song that came before (the finale) was equally contagious, cattycool, and hit-worthy.” Elle King will be appearing
on the new season of American Idol next month and performed on Good Morning America, Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Live with Kelly and Ryan, and The Late Late Show with James Corden, and Late Night With Seth Meyers, in support of her new album. Visit www. elleking.com<https://www.

people to meet their nutritional needs so that they can focus on getting a job, and focus on getting out there and participating in employment activities,” he points out. Waivers allowing counties to bypass the three-month limit are given to states where unemployment rates are higher than 10 percent, or more than 20 percent above the national average. Currently, that includes all but one of Illinois’s 102 counties. The state estimates more than 400,000 adults who fall into the waiver parameters will receive at least one month of benefits this year and could be affected by this rule down the line. Downey notes that half of adult SNAP recipients are working, although the
jobs might be part-time. He calls hunger an allencompassing issue and says if folks are spending money on food, that takes away from funds for things like transportation or materials needed to get a job. “If all the expendable income – what little that they have – is going toward meeting their most basic food needs, then the idea of having them going out and finding a job on top of that is extremely daunting, and a lot of times impossible for folks, especially in rural communities,” he states. Public comments on the proposed change are being accepted until April 2.

Habitat for Humanity is improving homes with Berger Foundation grant
Cara Van Dijk Palm Desert, Calif., – A $25,000 Coachella Valley Spotlight grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation to Habitat for Humanity of the Coachella Valley (HFHCV) is already helping local families by supporting the nonprofit organization’s “A Brush with Kindness” program. This volunteer-based assistance restores and repairs damaged or blighted properties throughout the Coachella Valley. “Volunteers are crucial to all aspects of our work at Habitat for Humanity of the Coachella Valley,” said David Thornton, HFHCV Executive Director. “We not only rely on volunteers with building skills and construction experience to build and repair homes, but we are also grateful to our volunteers who help with yard work, painting and minor repairs, as well as those who help in our retail store, ReStore, and those who assist with administrative and clerical work. It takes many people with many different talents to help improve and transform communities.” Part of a global nonprofit

• Leadership skills: From a very young age, playtime experiences can have a major impact on the development of children’s leadership skills. In the case of superhero play, the act of taking on a powerful persona
offers kids an opportunity to assert themselves and gain self-confidence, while creatively constructing their own story lines. Through play, parents, teachers and mentors can help foster these attributes in children. • Movement: Movement helps children hone their coordination, balance and motor skills. Associating exercise with fun can set a precedent for a lifetime habit. What’s more, physical activity encourages better eating and sleeping habits. Be sure your kids have a safe place to play indoors that lets them burn off all their energy. When the weather is nice, take the fun to the backyard or a nearby park, where the possibilities for pretend expand. • Perseverance: Known as the “Batman Effect,” a 2016 study published in “Child Development” found that kids stay better focused on a task when they are pretending to be their favorite superheroes or characters. Through

Children can channel frustration, anger, fear and triumph into the worlds, characters and storylines they create, learning to manage these emotions in healthy ways. 5 Ways Children Benefit From Creative Playtime
By Desert Star Staff When kids pretend to be their favorite superhero, it may look like sheer fun at first glance, but experts say that imaginative play also benefits children in a number of substantial ways. “From building confidence and self-perception to offering children an opportunity to practice communication and language skills, pretend play is vital to child development,” says Keri Wilmot, a pediatric occupational therapist and an expert contributor to TheGeniusofPlay.org. How can creative play help your child thrive? Here are five important benefits, according to The Genius of Play, a national movement

providing families with the information, inspiration and hands-on ideas they need to make play an important part of their child’s day. • Enhanced literacy: Some of the same mental connections that take place when a child is first learning to read are employed in the world of pretend. Whether it’s a banana that becomes a phone or a towel being used as a cape, grasping symbolism in the world of play can pave the way for children to better recognize that each letter of the alphabet represents a sound. Encourage kids to use the everyday objects and toys around them to build a world of creativity and fun.

Oscar-Winning ‘Green Book’ Now on DVD
By Desert Star Staff This year “Green Book” received five Oscar nominations-- Best Leading and Supporting Actor (Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali), Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. On Sunday, February 24th “Green Book” took home the gold for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay and this uplifting motion picture will win your heart as well. It’s a feelgood story about real people. The film’s title is based on the 1936 book by Victor Hugo Green, “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” which listed the names of hotels where black travelers could find safe accommodations in the segregated South. Mortensen, who gained 40 pounds for the role, plays Italian American Frank Anthony (Tony the Lip) Vallelonga, a no-nonsense bouncer at New York’s famed Copacabana. The film begins as Tony forcefully throws a belligerent, unruly Copa customer out in the street--head first. He’s a tough guy, but he’s also a
warm-hearted family man who loves his wife Delores (Linda Cardellini) and his kids. (His son Nick co-wrote the Oscarwinning screenplay for “Green Book” with director Peter Farrelly and Brian Currie). As the story begins, the Copa is about to close for a few months for renovations, and Tony needs to find a short-term job until the famed nightclub reopens. He could become a short-term enforcer for the Mob, but he’d rather not have a Mafia-related job, so he looks for something else. An opportunity arises when he gets a call from gifted pianist Don Shirley (Oscar winner Mahershala) who is about to go on a concert tour in the Deep South. He not only needs a driver, but he also needs a bodyguard and Tony fits the bill. Their first meeting in Shirley’s apartment above Carnegie Hall doesn’t go well. Tony refuses the offer, but eventually, he relents since the pay is good. Tony is a gregarious guy who relishes embellishing a good story verbally. Shirley, on the other hand, prefers to drive in silence. He also doesn’t like
the way Tony eats fried chicken with his hands. Tony tells him not to knock it till he’s tried it as he hands the pianist a piece to enjoy sans knife and fork. Before he leaves on the trip, Tony reluctantly promises Delores he will write often. As Shirley watches Tony struggle to compose a decent letter, he offers to help him put his true feelings into romantic words. Soon Tony’s letters are the envy of all his wife’s friends who ask their hubbies to write
them a love letter like Tony’s. Little by little the two men become friends asTony keeps Shirley safe from the racists they encounter on their journey. Tony also observes the hypocrisy of rich white Southerners who willingly come to hear Shirley play in concert but will not let him sit down to eat with them before the music begins. In the end, the two men form a friendship that lasted until they died.
“Green Book,” rated PG 13 for thematic content, language including racial epithets, smoking, and some violence and suggestive material, has a running time of 2 hours, 10 minutes. The DVD contains added information and interviews with the filmmakers. Other Oscar nominees now available on DVD include: “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The Favorite, “A Star Is Born” and “Blackkklansman.”
How to Make Your Empty Nest an Empowering New Chapter By Desert Star Staff Suddenly, the kids are all grown up and ready to flee the nest. It’s the start of a new chapter -- for them, and for mom and dad, too. While this sudden change in family dynamic is bound to bring a mix of bittersweet emotions, there are plenty of ways to embrace the shift. An empty nest certainly doesn’t mean an empty life. Raising a family reaps many rewards and any parent knows that family time revolves around the children’s wants and needs well into their teenage years. While in the thick of it, the prospect of a
quiet, relaxing weekend with no parental responsibilities and the very concept of selfcare can seem farfetched. But now with the kids leaving home, it’s time to make the most of your new foot-loose and fancy-free lifestyle. Make More “Me Time” Now that you have more time to do things that bring you joy, it’s time rediscover who you are -- whether that’s through traveling the world, learning a new skill or language, taking a yoga class, volunteering or simply doing more of what makes you feel good. The newfound time in your day is an opportunity
to discover new hobbies and build a social life that is entirely your own. Stay Connected: Just because the kids have left home doesn’t mean you can’t stay connected. In fact, you may find yourself on the other end of the phone giving dating advice or having more meaningful life chats than ever before. Family group text threads can replace dinner table conversations, so do make sure you stay up-todate with technology to keep the entire family connected. Choose a phone plan that lets you talk, video chat or text with your kids as much as you
want, when you want, such as T-Mobile ONE Unlimited 55+, which gives you two lines for just $35 per line with no surprise fees or taxes. A super affordable option designed just for customers 55 and older, it includes unlimited talk, text and data, in-flight texting, one hour of Gogo Wi-Fi on domestic flights, and texting and data when you travel abroad in 210 destinations. And what’s more, all the money you save on your phone plan can go straight into the self-care fund or to finance your next “adults only” fancy vacation. Win-win.

“Faith Healer” Mesmerizes at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble
Paul Norwood as Frank questions whether or not he has a real gift. Photo: Enci Box You can bet your theatrical entertainment dollar that if Ron Sossi is the director of a play at his Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary, you are in for a fascinating, unique, and provocative piece of theatre. I can assure you that his production of “Faith Healer,” written by Irish playwright Brian Friel, who is considered one of Ireland’s most famous writers, will keep you fully engaged. This gifted writer has been compared to Anton Chekov in his ability to draw characters possessing the deep, varied spirit of the human experience, infusing them with myriad emotions. He has his place in that coveted group of famous Irish writers including, Brendan Behan, Colm Tóibín, Frank McGuinness, George Bernard Shaw, James Plunkett, Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett, Seán O’Casey, W. B. Yeats, and George Bernard Shaw. His writing has also been compared to such esteemed American playwrights as Arthur Miller, Harold Pinter, and Tennessee Williams. So, you may have guessed by now, that this is an exquisitely written play that uses the most beautiful poetic language. “Faith Healer” is not what would be referred to as a traditional play where the characters interact with each other and strive to overcome obstacles they face in their pursuit of attaining their desired goals. This is, instead, an evening of four monologues performed by three outstanding actors – Paul Norwood as Francis Hardy or Frank the faith healer, Grace his suffering wife played by Diana Cignoni, and Teddy, Frank’s manager brought playfully to life by Ron Bottitta. Under Sossi’s surgical direction, coupled with Friel’s graceful narrative, each actor breaks the fourth wall and talks directly to the audience for around 45 minutes. Their characters

tell the story from his or her personal perspective about the relationship with the other two characters through the prism of their individual memories each, actor giving a tour de force performance. Rashomon would be a good reference point. Clearly, in an agitated state, the opening monologue is delivered by Frank, who to pull himself together, recites in rapid succession, a long list of obscure Scottish, Welsh, Irish, or English towns that he visited. He is a self-styled alcoholic faith healer who traveled to these remote towns, where he performed his healing in run-down church halls. He is tormented with the notion that he might be a total fraud, “Am I just a con man?” He adds, “Drunk or sober, I always knew when something was going to happen” and remembers the time he actually straightened a man’s crooked finger and restored sight to a blind person. Frank ruminates about his life in an almost stream of consciousness and talks about how he missed his mother’s death by only an hour and referred to his long-suffering wife as his mistress. The dialogue emanates from a genuinely organic place with Norwood’s performance servicing the material with rapid, mercurial, almost dizzying transitions. This tormented man rambles on about his relationship with both his wife and Teddy, his manager. He is afflicted. He is deeply tortured. He is lost. Grace is next up. She is disheveled and clearly in a highly stressed state. She, like the other two actors, has crawled deep inside of her character and like Frank keeps trying to pull herself together by having another drink and lighting a cigarette. She tells her version of her relationship with her husband and how she stuck with him no matter what. She was virtually his
cheerleader, and despite how he treated her, she stood by her man, until she couldn’t. Grace talks fondly about Teddy and how he helped with her stillborn baby — dressed in what looks like a nightgown over which she wears a raincoat, which she continually clutches, almost trying to keep anything from getting in. She, too, is in a sorry mental state and when she feels like she’s losing it, like Frank, recites the names of obscure Welsh, English, Irish, or Scottish towns in rapid succession. She tells of how her husband kept changing
March 27, 2019
her name and her birthplace, which added to her confusion. She happily remembers the time Frank actually cured ten people in one night after which a grateful person left a wallet for them full of money. They celebrated for four days in Cardiff. Finally, at the end of her tether, she remembers saying to Frank, “Do not follow me. I love you. I’m leaving you.” Following a brief intermission, we get to meet Ron Bottitta’s Teddy who lightens up the proceedings. Over the years, he’s managed some different acts including a Whippet who played the bagpipes and a lady with 120 pigeons. He makes it clear that you shouldn’t mix friends and business. Teddy begins to tell his version of his relationship with Grace and Frank, which also reveals his tender feelings toward the abused wife. He shares a memory of watching Grace give birth in the back of the van and what happened after the baby was stillborn. He also refers to how many times he watched Frank actually heal people. There is some comic relief as being a bit worn out; he wants to represent something simple like, “A whistling dolphin.” By the end of the fourth monologue, delivered by Frank, one can put together a picture of what life was like for
three people whose lives were intricately bound to each other. The entire production is performed on a bare-bones stage with a bunch of empty wooden chairs where people are coming to get healed would sit, a couple of tables, and a phonograph with a recording of “The Way You Look Tonight,” which is played a few times throughout the production. Rashomon, as applies to this production, is not a new theatrical device. However, I dare say you would be hard pressed to find a more exciting use of this genre than what transpires on that stage as the nuanced performances given by these three mega-talented actors are nothing short of masterful. “Faith Healer” Odyssey Theatre Ensemble The Odyssey Theatre, 2055 S. Desert Hot Springs Resident Changing Their City’s Image
NBC PS Max Rodriguez A Desert Hot Springs resident wants to change the image of his city as he said crime tends to dominate the news coverage, now he and a group of residents are working to change the narrative. Kephyan Sheppard is the Pastor at Word of Life Fellowship Center in Desert Hot Springs, he is also part of a group of residents called, “Advancing Desert Hot Springs” where he shares stories of people doing amazing things in the city. “Feel good stories, put it them out in print, put them out on social media and let people know what’s happening,” Sheppard said. “Those of us that live here know how great of a city it is, it’s almost like the best-kept secret in the valley, so we’re turning up the volume a little bit to let people know, hey we’re here.” He said this is a community response
to the crime coverage his city often gets. Sheppard said, “We can have five or six positive things going on out here, but one negative thing happens, and the press jumps on the negative thing.” Instead, he wants to share his perspective as a resident and wants others to join. The Advancing Desert Hot Springs Instagram page almost reaches 300 followers, but the group also has a Facebook page and a website. He said one of his favorite stories he’s shared is about the Desert Hot Springs High School tennis champion, Eduardo Contreras, who beat all odds and became one of the best local players. “The kid played the whole season with holes in his shoes and he didn’t have his own tennis racket, he had to borrow tennis rackets,” Sheppard said. “The city council actually recognized, and it was a real
feel-good story and he’s a senior and wants to go to UCLA and play tennis. “ Besides sharing all of the good, Pastor Sheppard is also taking action, his church community is in the process of building partnerships to create a shelter for the homeless
behind his place of worship. Sheppard said, “We’re envisioning trailers, so be able to allow families to sleep at night, restrooms, showers and all of that.” Sheppard said they are in the middle of purchasing the church building, and
once the escrow is complete, they will be able to provide even more resources to the community. The Word of Life Fellowship Center has a page for donations to help its religious community. Source: NBC Palm Springs
Your Broadcast TV Channels May Change Frequencies
NBC PS Max Rodriguez If you rely on an antenna for your TV viewing, changes between now and July 2020 may affect reception of some of your channels. As part of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) work to make more airwaves available for high-speed mobile broadband services, some TV stations in cities across the United States are changing their over-the-air broadcast frequencies. While the channel numbers you see on the TV are not changing, viewers will need to rescan their televisions to update to the new frequencies so they can continue receiving those channels. Viewers will not need to buy a new TV or purchase a converter box. Only those who use an antenna to watch local channels need to rescan their TVs; cable and satellite subscribers are not affected by these changes. Not all channels are changing and the changes are happening on a rolling basis, so not all channels will change at the same time. Some viewers may need to rescan their televisions and converter boxes multiple times over the transition period. Viewers should look for additional announcements on local channels and rescan when those changes take place. Consider these common transition questions to ensure you’re prepared: How will I know it’s time to scan? Some local TV channels www.desertstarweekly.com
will change frequencies at various times through mid2020. Viewers should be on the lookout for public service announcements, “crawls” running across the bottom of TV screens and other notifications from local stations announcing “rescan days” on which viewers will need to rescan. Broadcasters will give viewers at least 30 days of notice that their frequency change is approaching. A good rule of thumb is to rescan your TV anytime you notice a channel missing. If you haven’t rescanned
in a while, you may be surprised by how many channels are now available. How many people will be affected by the transition? Millions of Americans nationwide who watch television for free with an antenna will be affected. What is the advantage of making the frequency changes? The benefit is that more airwaves will be available to meet consumer demand for increased mobile broadband capacity, the new 5G and
other advanced highspeed mobile broadband services being developed. How can I find out which channels are changing? The FCC website has an interactive map that allows viewers to insert their address to see which local channels are making a transition in their market. To access the map, visit fcc.gov/media/ engineering/dtvmaps. Once you enter your location information, such as city and state or zip code, you will be able to view a

list of stations in your area. Stations that are changing frequencies will have an “R” in the last column marked “IA.” Click on the station to see the time period during which each affected station will make the change. To find the specific “rescan day” for a particular station, watch for its on-air announcements and notices or check its website for information. For more information and tips on how to rescan, visit fcc.gov/TVrescan or call 1-888-CALLFCC (1-888-225-5322).

According to findings from a scientific study and survey commissioned by Tetra Pak, adopting simple renewable lifestyle habits can help people go from feeling glum to good. According to the survey, a majority of people (70 percent) feel happier when they make choices that help preserve natural resources. This study comes on the heels of the world’s first social experiment in renewability, conducted by three esteemed academic experts in habit and behavioral science, which uncovered how renewable lifestyle choices – habits that help preserve natural resources – influence levels of happiness. “We believe that even simple lifestyle behaviors have the power to make a big impact, on both a personal and global scale,” said Elisabeth Comere, director of environment and government affairs for Tetra Pak. “The combined benefit of the small actions we take, from taking shorter showers to choosing products in renewable packaging – made of natural resources that can be replenished over time – can benefit the world around us while making us happier.” Adopting one of these simple renewable habits can help preserve the planet’s resources while fast-tracking levels of happiness: 1. Conserve resources, including water. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that cutting your shower by just one minute will save two and a half gallons of water. Over time, that savings adds up: 75 gallons per month and nearly 1,000 gallons over the course of a year. 2. Choose products in renewable packaging. Choosing food and beverage products in renewable packaging is a natural extension of environmentally friendly habits, such as recycling or composting. From milk and soup to water and juice, you can find food products packaged in cartons – primarily made from paper, a renewable resource from growing forests. 3. Buy only what you can consume. At the grocery store, it’s easy to over-shop, especially if you’re hungry. Buy only what you need to reduce waste and seek groceries that are considered renewable, such as fruits and vegetables, and carton-packed food and beverages in packages made

from renewable materials. Carton-packed foods last longer, are easy to store and have a relatively low environmental footprint. 4. Use re-usable containers. These days, hectic lifestyles are the norm and that often means meals and beverages on the go. When possible, rely on re-usable drink and food containers instead of disposable ones. 5. Whenever you can, bike or walk instead of driving. According to data compiled by National Geographic, it takes nearly 13 gallons of water to produce each gallon of gasoline. Using alternative modes of transportation and taking care to combine errands, car pool and use public transportation help cut water and energy demands. MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
Record Store Day Preview Music lovers will want to start making plans to get select, one-of-a-kind titles being released from the far-flung likes of Pearl Jam, Courtney Barnett, Weezer and Elvis Costello on Record Store Day on Saturday, April 13. Several stores in the Coachella Valley will be participating and offering select titles, including Record Alley in Palm Desert (RecordAlley.com), and Palm Springs Vinyl Records and Collectibles in Palm Springs (PalmSpringsVinylRecords. com). Concertgoers lucky enough to be at Weekend 1 of Coachella on April 13 can hit the air conditioned pop-up record shop on the festival groups that will be carrying Record Store Day exclusives along with new releases from Coachellafest artists (this writer was fortunate to pick up an autographed Gary Clark Jr. audio CD when the emerging artist performed there for the first time in April 2012). There will also be 30,000 vintage releases in the store, all curated
by Coachella staff. Additionally, there will be merchandise like tees and totes that can only be purchased on that date. Here is a roundup of some of the high-profile releases available on Record Store Day. Blues harmonica legend James Cotton (who passed away in 2017) will be celebrated via “Late Night Blues (Live At The New Penelope Café),” captured in Montreal back in 1967. Being released on vinyl for the first-time ever, all fourteen tracks of the recording feature Cotton’s incredible talents on the blues harp. Michigan-spawned rockers Greta Van Fleet’s outstanding 2017 LP “From the Fires” will appear on vinyl for the first time. Pearl Jam’s live performance at Seattle’s Easy Street Records shop in 2005 will be released on vinyl for the first time. Australian singersongwriter Courtney Barnett will issue a new single titled “Everybody Here Hates You”; the release features handillustrated artwork by the artist. The 12-inch vinyl is
limited to only 2,000 copies. Sigur Rós is celebrating this year’s event with two exclusive vinyl albums, each limited to 2,000 copies and produced on black heavyweight 12-inch vinyl with a spined sleeve and printed with special inks. “22° Lunar Halo” is a brand new dance work by leading Taiwanese choreographer CHENG tsunglung, who selected his favorite music from throughout the Icelandic troupe’s career; those recordings were then twisted, bent and broken and then recreated into something new. The second release is “Variations On Darkness,” Sigur Rós’ soundtrack to a series of choreographed performances from the Iceland Dance Company. Coachella-bound Weezer will be featured on the RSD exclusive “Dusty Gems and Raw Nuggets,” a collection of rarities housed on limited-edition vinyl. On a related note, April 13 will see the release of “Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Weezer.” The
latest in CMH Label Group’s Rockabye Baby series aimed at little listeners, parents and tots can check out reimagined classics such as “Island in the Sun,” “Beverly Hills,” “Buddy Holly” and “Undone - the Sweater Song.” Elvis Costello & the Imposters’ “Purse” EP is essential for fans of the songwriting great; the title collects songs that Costello wrote with Burt Bacharach, Sir Paul McCartney, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. One of the most important releases coming on RSD arrives via Yep Roc Records, which is issuing a new disc from The Minus 5, the aptly-titled “Stroke Manor.” In November 2017, musician Scott McCaughey was nearly killed after suffering a stroke that also wiped out his musical memory (he was a member of the Minus 5 and long-time touring member of R.E.M.). While still in the Intensive Care Unit he began writing down thoughts that came into his mind; those stream-of-mind thoughts jotted down onto a notebook anchor
“Stroke Manor,” which will be issued on both audio CD (2,500 copies worldwide) and vinyl (2,000 copies). The disc features contributions from Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Corin Tucker, Jeff Tweedy and others. Omnivore Recordings is issuing four eagerly-anticipated titles on vinyl for RSD. “I Don’t Like the Way This World’s A-Treatin’ Me” is a four-song tribute to Woody Guthrie. Pioneering L.A. Americana troupe Lone Justice’s previously-unreleased “Live at the Palomino, 1983” should generate renewed interest in the groundbreaking group. Culture’s “The Nighthawk Recordings” is a seven-song EP featuring four unreleased songs; Dennis Quaid & the Sharks’ terrific 2017 album “Out of the Box” rounds out the list. For more information, including a complete list of stores across the U.S. participating on April 13 and information on many more special releases, visit RecordStoreDay.com.
Trump chosen by God as savior of Jewish people?
By Desert Star Staff Trump may be God’s chosen one to save the Jewish people from “the Iranian menace,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed in a baffling interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network. Specifically, the interviewer asked Pompeo if Trump could be a modern-day version of the biblical character Esther, a beautiful woman chosen to be married to Persian King Ahasuerus. Presumably, the comparison wasn’t invited in light of Trump’s feminine charm,
but because Esther spoiled the plans of the king’s chief advisor Haman, who wanted to kill all of the Jews living in Persia. The interviewer states rather factually that there is a “new Haman” in the Middle East who wants to “eradicate the Jewish people,” also known as Iran, and asked if President Trump had been chosen, “just like Queen Esther,” in order to “save the Jewish people from the Iranian menace?” “As a Christian, I certainly believe that’s possible,” Pompeo answered with a smile. The interview took place during Pompeo’s visit to Jerusalem
on the day Jews mark the foiling of Haman’s plans with a holiday called Purim. Aside from the holiday, the secretary’s comments came in light of Trump’s announcement that the US would recognize the occupied Golan Heights as part of Israel, despite a UN resolution which
condemns Tel Aviv’s forceful acquisition of the territory. “I am confident that the Lord is at work here,” Pompeo added, describing the role the United States has played in preserving the “Jewish state.” Pompeo’s bizarre comment fetched many responses from people on
Twitter that ranged between concerned and terrified. Pompeo is currently engaged in a Middle East tour aimed at forming a united front against Iran. Having stopped in Kuwait before heading to Israel, he will next visit Lebanon before heading back to the States.

Locals Say Goodbye to Starbucks at The River Luz Delia Caballero One of the busiest stores at “The River at Rancho Mirage” served up its last latte today at noon. NBC Palm Springs spoke to the saddened Starbucks customers who say this is a big loss to the neighboring community. Tim Esser and Rose Donnelly live in Rancho Mirage and have come to the Starbucks inside of The River for many years. In fact, Tim couldn’t help but smile while looking back on all of the fun times he, his friends, and his family have spent just outside of the coffee shop. “Starbucks has been an anchor store, along with the theater for many many years. We’re just sad to see it going out of business and there’s
no reason to because there are people here all the time.” Tim told NBC Palm Springs. Other locals shared that same sentiment saying they felt “terrible because this Starbucks is very convenient, and it has a beautiful setting and we can all sit outside.” The also said they enjoyed coming over, getting iced lattes, and enjoying the beautiful weather. Rode Donnelly said she was shocked to hear that this Starbucks was closing because, to her, it seems like a staple here in the valley. “It was shocking coming in this morning, getting our usual breakfast and coffee and this is what’s going on. This is sad. This is really sad.” Many people said they
have made a lot of friends here. Some citing they have been coming since its inception, over 10 years ago. The baristas even gave loyal customers “thank
you” cards, showing their appreciation for the continued loyalty through the years. “So, we’ll all miss it. We’ll all miss it a lot.”
This Starbucks offered complimentary coffee until it closed its doors, for the last time, at noon. Source: NBC Palm Springs
training or diet? I did absolutely no training before the tournament. I’ve been going to the gym for about a year now. There wasn’t any. On the subject of food, I don’t follow any particular diet. When I go to the gym, I try to adhere to a good diet, but when I don’t, I eat everything in sight. For winning the championships, you received 30,000 rubles in prize money. Was it worth it for the trouble? I got 15,000 rubles actually. Thirty thousand was the overall funds, and 15,000 was the prize money for the winner. I don’t really think about any money. I just went to try my luck and take part in the competition. The money was just a bonus! Many say you should enter WWE or UFC with such a devastating slap. Have you ever thought about making the transition? I’ve never really even considered going into UFC. I don’t think it’s my thing. They hit hard, and I would die I think! WWE is like a show, a stage, it’s not real.
UFC fighter Nate Diaz became famous for his own ‘Stockton Slap.’ Who has the best slap from you two? If you had a slap match, who would win? It probably depends on who has the first slap. If I went first, then my weight would probably make a difference. But Nate Diaz is a serious fighter. Who would you want to slap the most from the world of sports? I wouldn’t want to slap anybody. Why would I want to do that? A lot of people said that the championships would be an excellent alternative to sorting out political debates and elections, what do you think? [Laughs] I don’t know anything about political debate and elections. I don’t know how interesting it would be. I rarely get involved in politics myself. What did it mean for you to win the male slapping championship? It doesn’t mean anything to me. A win is a win. If people want to take part in a competition, then, of course, they want to win it - and that’s exactly what I did. Is there any kind of technique to ‘the perfect slap’? No there’s no kind of special technique. It’s actually the first time I have taken part in a slapping competition. There are specific rules of how to hit correctly and how not to hit. That’s all. I used to go to training. I went a couple of times, but I stopped going. But I plan to start again. Now is probably the ideal time to start again because I have a break at work. I will start again soon. What would you do if a UFC fighter or wrestler challenged you
to a slapping match? I don’t even know. I’d think about it at first. I wouldn’t want to call anyone out, but it would be interesting to have a match. You knocked out some of your opponents in the tournament. Is that what you intended to do with the slaps? I knocked out two guys. I didn’t even think about it. I didn’t know you could knock out someone with a slap. I have a beard. Maybe it helped me a little bit [in defending slaps] in that it made the slaps softer. Do you follow any other sports in your spare time? You could say I follow all sports. I watch football, ice hockey, basketball, MMA, all sports. I support the Spartak Moscow football club. About the Olympics - people are just joking, that’s all. In my spare time, I work. I watch all the Spartak matches broadcast on TV. I play FIFA on the PlayStation. I also love the banya, I’m always sweating it out in the banya. And I love cooking meat like shashlik and steak. Do people on the streets of Krasnoyarsk recognize you now given your newfound fame? I live in Ilansky, not even Krasnoyarsk. It’s a small town, and before the championship, people knew me well enough. But now it’s all anyone will talk about. There’s a buzz in the city going around at the moment about the ‘guy who won the slapping championships.’ What’s an average day for you? I live a normal life. I get up, have breakfast, go to work, come back home. In the evenings I watch football. On the weekends I go to the banya with friends.
‘I didn’t know I could knock him out with a slap!’
By Desert Star Staff Russian viral sensation Vasiliy Kamotskiy recently wowed the world by winning an utterly bizarre new sport in literally stunning fashion - knocking out opponents in the Male Slapping Championships in Siberia. A video of the giant, 370 lbs, bearded Russian nicknamed ‘Dumpling’ slapping opponents into a daze, including knocking two poor opponents unconscious, went viral across social media, reaching news outlets across the United States and Europe. Clips of Vasiliy’s exploits subsequently gave the world an invaluable insight into the weird and wonderful championship held as part of the annual exhibition of brute force. But just how do you reach the pinnacle of the slapping world? Days and days of grueling training sessions fine-tuning the back-swing and connection? Priming your body to withstand the force of a grown man striking your open face? Perhaps studying angles

of the trajectory of a perfect open-palm slap to land perfectly against a cheek to obliterate your opponent and achieve untold riches, fame, and glory? Or does merely spending your free time sweating it out with friends in the sauna, eating tonnes of barbecued meat and drinking gallons of beer make the perfect recipe for a champion? RT Sport caught up with the man they call the ‘Siberian Slapping Machine.’ It turns out Vasiliy is a local football fan and weightlifter who turned up to watch a show with friends and ended his night by winning the coveted male slapping championships. Vasiliy, just exactly how did it come about that you took part in the Male Slapping Championships? It all happened by chance. I just came to watch the Power Show, and it turned out that I ended up taking part. My friends put me up to it, so to speak. Tell us about your training regimen for the championships. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. With Mueller finished, US media turns to… John Travolta By Desert Star Staff With Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe wrapped up, one can’t blame the liberal media for trying to keep the ‘Russian Collusion’ narrative on life support. Enter the latest Russian agent: ‘Grease’ star John Travolta. The Hollywood star’s recent trip to Russia – a PR tour to a country fascinated by aging celebrities – didn’t escape the eagle-eyed Russia sleuths over at the Daily Beast. “Why is John Travolta palling around with Putin’s cronies in Russia?” the liberal news site asked on Saturday. Raw Story later picked up and rewrote the story.
The ‘Pulp Fiction’ star’s transgressions included meeting with “elite members of President Vladimir Putin’s court,” having his picture snapped by Russian paparazzi, and praising Russia’s culture of “music, ballet, and avantgarde artists.” He also chatted with Kremlin press spokesman Dmitry Peskov about the “Russophobic moods” of American authorities and reportedly said that “ordinary Americans” hold a positive attitude towards Russia, seemingly despite the best efforts of US media. Travolta’s Russia visit saw the veteran actor attend a music awards ceremony
at Moscow’s prestigious Bolshoi Theater. However, the presence of a Kremlin official meant the Beast only saw a lousy propaganda effort. The article sarcastically noted that Travolta “did everything just the way the Kremlin wanted him to,” saying he smiled at Russian TV cameras and thanked his hosts. Well, he was hardly going to skip down the road to the Kremlin and snoop through Putin’s office looking for an envelope with ‘Collusion Evidence’ written on it, was he? Still, that wasn’t going to stop the Daily Beast looking for ulterior motives. For almost two years,
the news site has been breathlessly charting every twist and turn of Mueller’s investigation. The Daily Beast reported the nowinfamous ‘Steele Dossier’ (which accused President Trump of, among other things, hiring two Russian prostitutes to pee on a hotel bed) as credible, questioned whether the president was actually “a Russian asset,” and promised readers that Mueller “is connecting the dots” and “has got Trump on collusion.” Raw Story too has been feeding its readers a steady diet of collusion and conspiracy. The site accused Trump of a “desperate cover-
up” of his alleged Russian ties, promised “damning evidence” of a Kremlin/Trump plot, and called the Russia non-story “the single greatest scandal in the history of the US.” Trump, it said, was “running scared” from Mueller’s investigation. Now that that’s not actually happening, the adjustment must be difficult. Indeed, pundits and anchors from all networks have served up an impressive display of denials, evasions, and on-air strokes in recent days. Some, like the Daily Beast, are just determined to keep the party going, even after everyone else has long since gone home.
Save Your Way to Lower Home Insurance By Desert Star Staff If your homeowner insurance rates are creeping up even though you haven’t filed any claims, it may be time to take a look at how you can bring those prices back down. Research, smart shopping and even some home upgrades can make a noticeable difference in your insurance premiums. Explore the cost-savings potential with these tips from the experts at CertainTeed, a leading manufacturer of exterior and interior building products: Shop for the best rates. It’s easy to be complacent when you’ve used the same insurance company for years, but if getting the best rate is your objective, it’s a good idea to shop around. To do effective comparison shopping, have a copy of your current policy ready and contact a handful of competitors. Provide them the exact same coverage details so you can compare like rates, but also be ready to listen to information about additional coverage options that may suit your needs. Combine homeowner insurance with other policies.
Most insurance carriers offer multiple policy discounts, which they apply when you insure more than one item. For example, if your homeowner insurance carrier also insures your cars, you’re likely to save money on the rates for protecting both your home and automobiles. Update your home’s first line of defense. Many homeowners focus on aesthetics when it’s time to make upgrades, but there are some important functional improvements that can make a difference when it comes to your insurance premiums. For example, as extreme weather becomes more commonplace, the first line of defense is often the type of roofing material chosen. Many insurance companies even offer discounts for using impactresistant shingles. Check with your insurance provider before making a final selection, but in general, look for products that include “impact-resistant in their name and specs, and “Class IV Impact Resistance, the highest rating available for roofing materials. For example, NorthGate Class IV impact-resistant
shingles from CertainTeed are engineered to have a higher probability of resisting hail. These shingles are made using rubber-like polymers that offer flexibility and impact resistance, as well as crack and shrink resistance, even in cold weather. So when severe weather strikes, your home can be protected and stay looking good. Install a home security system. An intruder alarm can provide more than peace of
mind. Insurance companies often reward homeowners who take steps to minimize the chances of burglary or vandalism. After all, a wellprotected home is less likely to result in a claim for losses. Some companies offer varying degrees of discounts on insurance rates depending on the type of system you install, so be sure to thoroughly research the options. For example, a system that simply emits a
loud noise when triggered may generate one level of discount, while a system that dispatches emergency personnel when activated can lead to an even better rate. Insurance rates are one place to save money on your home costs. Learn more about impactresistant shingles and how they can save your home and wallet at certainteed. com. Family Features

Coyote Stageworks Revisits an Old Friend in “Greater Tuna” After its Ten Year Debut
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatres Critic Association Like a fine wine that just gets better with age and tender-lovingcare, Coyote StageWorks of Palm Springs found its groove too. But an explanation is in order. Ten years ago, Coyote co-founders Chuck Yates, Alan Denny, Larry Raben, David Engle, and Michael Solomon brought their talents as actors, producers, and directors, from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, with an eye toward remaining permanently in our desert paradise. This gifted quintet of professionals approached Arch Brown, then owner of Thorny Theatre, in Palm Springs (now defunct) to ask if he was interested in renting the Thorny Theatre to them, as a way of introducing to Valley residents, the professional theatrical skills of Coyote StageWorks. He did and the rest, as they say, would become history. Over the last ten years, Coyote StageWorks has gone on to rack up 77 Desert Theatre League Awards (DTL) for excellence in their productions. The play they selected to produce was a hoot of a comedy about a tiny radio station - probably a 500-watt signal that just reaches out the window sill - to the 1500 listeners of a tiny, fictional community in East Texas called Tuna. That would be the extent of its outlet reach and probably doesn’t travel much beyond their city limits, but that doesn’t faze our intrepid radio co-hosts. Thurston Wheelis (Alan Denny) and Arlis Struvie (Chuck Yates), the two guys chit-chat about the local residents who buy the ads and talk to the listeners who call-in to their local daily radio show. And they also read the local and national news too. “Greater Tuna,” set in the fictional city of Tuna, (“the third smallest city in Texas”) is a series of comedy vignettes punctuated by lightning-quick costume changes that make up the meat of this excellently produced comedy by David Youse and Chuck Yates and staged by DTL awardwinning director Larry Raben. The highest compliment a theatre critic can bestow to a seamlessly directed play is to say the hand of the director was nowhere in evidence. One can only imagine; however, the blood, sweat, and tears taking place backstage that gives the appearance of the production as one that flows smoothly to the audience. That’s why it’s called ‘stage magic.’ “Greater Tuna”, written by co-authors Ed Howard, Joe Sears, and Jaston Williams hit the jackpot back 1982 when they created the outrageous, oddball, and the kookiest www.desertstarweekly.com
cast of characters that looked and sounded like your crazy uncle (who usually slept in the attic on a cot) or Bertha Bumiller community busy-body, and nosy lady who knows everyone’s business and shares it with anyone who will listen which, of course, in Tuna, everyone does exactly that. Spoofs and satires are blisteringly funny to most, except those that see themselves as objects of ridicule. The fun aspect of this terrific production is in recognizing the characters as people we have loved or known in the past and have accepted their flaws, yet we as an audience, are still able to embrace them and their biases because they cannot see or find fault in their own lives. The fictional characters of Tuna, Texas are intentionally exaggerated and over-thetop, but, by gosh, it sure does make for one hilarious evening of theatre. Those twangy Texas accents also lend another dimension to the performances of all nineteen characters. And, where do they come up with the names of the people who live in Tuna? They’re downright Dickensian — more about the two incredible actors who perform these nineteen characters later. Coyote StageWorks performed just one production at the tiny Thorny Theatre “Greater Tuna.” For the next three years, the group became sort of a gypsy-like traveling theatrical company. Productions of “A Tuna Christmas” and “Fully Committed” thrilled audiences at The Palm Springs Woman’s Club. The group presented their final ‘roadshow’ production “Buyer & Cellar,” at the Helene Galen Performing Arts Center, in Rancho Mirage. Their performing home for the last seven years has been the Annenberg Theater, located inside the Palm Springs Art Museum. The group’s Artistic Director Chuck Yates, felt it was fitting to celebrate the group’s first decade of professional quality theatre in the Valley, by presenting a revival production of “Greater Tuna”, with the same two actors and director who created the roles in the first Palm Springs production: Chuck Yates and Alan Denny, and Larry Raben Time has been kind to these two fine actors. I reviewed the very first production in the Thorny Theatre, and I immediately knew this professional Equity and Sag/ AFTRA theatre group were keepers. However, I did wonder how these two seasoned actors would fare ten years later in the roles they originated. Not only did they acquit themselves in “Greater Tuna” one, they exceeded and enriched their acting chops and performances in “Greater Tuna” two, now performing at the Annenberg Theater venue in Palm Springs.
Photo by David A. Lee The division of labor in this terrific production boils down to 10 characters for Mr. Yates, and nine roles for Mr. Denny. Both men portray female characters, but you wouldn’t know it from the audience; well, yes, one might, but it’s always a delight to watch two pros do their thing. Mr. Denny is perfect as Bertha Bumiller in how she handles her annoying children as well as her
friends. And Mr. Yates never disappoints in any of the wideranging roles he tackles. His performance as Truman Capote in the biographical play “TRU,” is still talked about in the Valley. The creative, technical team led by director Larry Raben includes a slick functioning set by Designer Josh Clabaugh; Supplemental Costumes by Jim Lapidus
and Supplemental Costumes/ Wardrobe/Master Frank Cazares, complete the creative team. The production is Stage Managed by Diane L. David. “Greater Tuna” performs at the Annenberg Theater in Palm Springs and runs through March 31, 2019. It’s a Must See production!
