Story and Photos by Pat Krause Act For MS held its Annual Spring Gala, Hooray For Hollywood, on March 18th that was held at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa in the Crystal Ballroom. The theme this year was chosen because of honoree Leo Milmet’s Love of Films. Act for MS was born when Gloria Greer started the charity when her daughter Norma was Diagnosed with the Disease. Gloria Greer realized the need

to help people and families cope and proved the necessary treatments needed to give them a better and longer life. Honorees this year were Leo Milmet and his mother, Sarah Milmet. The Milmets are big supporters of Act for MS and many other charities. Leo and his mother are well known for buying 2 or more Christmas trees during Christmas Tree Lane Gala and then donates them to other charities. Leo is a very gifted young man that is

big for his age and suggests he is much older. He spoke to the crowd and with a much older presence and seemed to shine on the stage as he spoke. He said his life’s motto is, Always Help Others First, which shows his maturity. They were honored for their Philanthropic Hearts and their support of our local Charities. The event started with a cocktail party. Co-chairs were Nelda Linsk, Marc Byrd, and Lindell Campbell. President

Margot Nelligan gave the welcoming speech the, and the Emcee was Joey English. Guests were entertained by an exceptionally gifted couple, Guiseppe Viola and Adriana Ortega. Guests entered on a Red Carpet under a circle of balloons and cardboard statues of famous Hollywood Stars. Guests were greeted by a trio of media, two photographers, and an interviewer. Just like in Hollywood when guests arrive. There were a Live auction

and a raise the paddle to raise money for Act For MS. Act For MS offers strength training, and massage therapies, Yoga classes, an Aquatic program, wellness education series, Support and event help with the Electric Bill when necessary. They hold quarterly luncheons and a resource center and ALL programs are FREE. There is help out there for MS patients with Act for MS and all its benefits programs.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Alzheimers Coachella Valley held a fundraiser at the Fabulous PURCH on Highway 111. The event started at 5 and people drifted in all evening. The chef offered delectable treats of Shrimp, spring rolls and more. There was a table of cheeses, crackers, and fruits. Guests got to mingle and see all the new items displayed at PURCH. The fundraiser is for Alzheimer’s so they can continue their efforts to help those suffering from the disease and most importantly their caregivers. I know from experience that there was no help like this years ago. Caregivers are sometimes in denial and do not seek help which is a big mistake as the caregiver suffers in their health and well being. Support is out there if you look

for it and this is something that is sorely needed in our Valley. They have started something new by getting nurses and aides certificates for care. They have a weekly training session by a trained nurse to give them the ability needed to care for dementia patients. The service is hugely required by those who have Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The nurse instructor, Edwina Dirk, spoke and told everyone they are looking for students and explained the sessions. Other speakers said about the programs for caregivers and the help given to the patients by various facilities. A very emotional speech was given by a former caregiver of her husband, Joanie Schulman, that has passed on from the Disease. She spoke with eloquence and

emotions on what its like to be a caregiver for years and years. She said it takes a toll on a person. She was in denial and thought no one could care for her husband like she could but was finally forced to seek help. She realized it was the best thing she did for her husband and herself. Caregivers need all the help they can find, and the Alzheimers Coachella Valley can give that help. Caregivers take note. They were hoping to raise $30,000 to continue with all the programs they provide and the new nursing training program. Paul Rose announced a matching gift for all donations by attending guests. At the end of the evening, a donation of $5,000 by the Newman Foundation brought them close to reaching their goal. Volunteers are the

most significant part of this charity as most of them have suffered from someone afflicted

with dementia or Alzheimers and are very dedicated to help or eradicate this disease.

The Good and Bad on Tax Law Changes

By Janice Gough The National Federation of Independent Business, the most significant small business trade group, resoundingly supports the new tax law changes. Eighty percent of its members have fewer than ten employees. Six months ago, President Trump vowed that his sweeping tax reform would “bring back Main Street” by slashing taxes on small businesses. Now that the plan is law, small firms’ enthusiasm for the changes depends on which side of Main Street they find themselves. It is no surprise that

larger ones will reap more significant benefits since they have more income and pay more taxes. The vast majority of larger small businesses with revenue upwards of $200,000 will tangibly benefit from the legislation, and many are already planning business expansion. The tax reform broadly helps firms called “pass-throughs” that report their business profits as personal income on their returns. About 80% of small businesses file their taxes that way. The tax legislation cuts their taxes chiefly in two ways. First, individual rates are reduced, with the top rate falling to 37% from 39.6%. More critical, pass-through businesses can deduct 20% of their income for tax purposes, though the savings are trimmed above certain thresholds for higher income enterprises. Businesses can also deduct capital spending more rapidly from their income.

Under one provision, the amount that can be written off the first year will rise from $500,000 to $1 million. Another method that places no cap on the investment’s value increases the portion that can be deducted immediately from 50% to 100%. The law gradually phases out the 20% reduction for service businesses earning from $157,500 to $207,500 (as single filers) or above. And it caps the write-off for other companies making more than $207,500 at half of the total employee wages or 25% of salaries plus 2.5% of the “unadjusted tax basis” of business assets. Most smaller enterprises, such as restaurants, retailers, and small manufacturers will only come out a little amount ahead if any, as savings are marginal in most cases. Smaller firms are the ones who need a boost. However, the bulk of the benefit is not going to Main

Street small businesses. The average small business with about $75,000 in profits will realize a typical modest gain of about $1,800. Some may even be worse off because the reform scraps the deduction for entertainment expenses and caps the write-off for state and local property and income taxes at $10,000. Also, most small businesses are not making capital investments that are large enough to yield benefits from those deductions. Doctors, lawyers, and accountants with large incomes but few employees are among the pass-throughs who will net the most significant gains. Even wealthy investors in real estate trusts can file as pass-throughs to reap the savings. Overall, 55% of the tax savings will go to the top 2.6% of pass-through businesses with the large incomes. Because they employ more people, they buy more assets and are considered

the drivers of the economy. Representatives on both sides agree on one thing: The law will make filing more complicated for small businesses, rather than simplifying the burden as initially intended. The law affects taxes on 2018 earnings that will be paid early next year. By adding a trillion and a half dollars to the country’s debt will prove to hurt us more in the long term. One day taxes will double to keep the economy from collapsing. This is why planning your future today should become your top priority.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL A lawsuit concluded in Las Vegas involving the Lamplight Village Homeowners Association in February 2018. A 15 year old boy in 2013 sat on a swing to send a text message. The crossbar of the swing set, had, unbeknown to him, corroded and worn badly at the connection points. After he sat down, the crossbar weighing 42 pounds fell on his head, causing serious injury. The jury was told that over recent years, this was the fourth time the HOA had experienced a swing set failure. The HOA, reportedly believing that the play set was new enough that maintenance was not yet warranted, did not have any regular maintenance or inspection of the play equipment. The particular swing set was about three years old at the date of the incident. When the trial ended, the jury awarded $20 million to Thompson, of which $10 million was punitive damages. The HOA only has $2 million of liability insurance coverage. Many valuable lessons can be drawn from this case, not only for playground equipment, but for any location in which members are using common area land or equipment for recreational purposes. In tort law, carelessness, or negligence, is a common way of imposing responsibility when that negligence contributes to injury. If an association is aware of a

dangerous condition and fails to act, liability might be imposed. However, if the association is not aware despite reasonable vigilance, it might not be found liable. One important exception to this is when the area in question is not periodically inspected – the lack of regular inspections could itself be argued to be negligence. California has since at least 2006 had Health and Safety Code 115725, requiring “public” playgrounds to be initially inspected by National Playground Safety Institute certified inspectors. The same as with California swimming pool regulations, HOA playgrounds are also considered “public” within the statute. Once a safety issue or maintenance concern is identified, associations should respond with reasonable diligence. One size of diligence does not fit all, as minor issues might

require less urgency than major ones, but in the area of potential injury, one might argue that SOME action is always warranted. In the event of a significant injury potential, the equipment may need to be closed until it can be made safe. Having some safety rules and disclosures could help to educate and limit misuse. Are there weight, size or other reasonable limits on the use of the equipment? Are there limitations as to the hours the playground is in use? Avoid age-related rules, or the association might run afoul of state and federal Fair Housing laws (which, amazingly, do not allow HOAs to institute safety standards based on the age of the participant). Associations often focus on roofs, decks, and plumbing because problems in these areas can be expensive to fix, and that these components wear down over time. Think about a swing sets,

weightlifting machines, or even diving boards – these items are challenged every day by users pulling, pushing or jumping on them. Yet, recreational equipment may not be perceived as important as balconies, roofs, plumbing, and railings. Perhaps the Thompson v. Lamplight Village trial is an important wakeup call emphasizing that all association facilities are important - and some are more potentially hazardous than others.

Ontario welcomes China Airlines Taiwan service Carrier sees Ontario as Southern California’s new gateway to Asia By Desert Star Staff ONTARIO, Calif., March 25, 2018 - The historic event was more than a year in the making. Local officials visited Taiwan and China Airlines executives visited Ontario. Negotiations were held and information was exchanged. Agreements were signed between airports and local governments. Flight schedules were announced and, when customer demand was even stronger than anticipated, expanded. With all the pieces in place, Ontario International Airport (ONT) today welcomed the arrival of China Airlines #CI24 from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), marking the start of Ontario’s first non-stop, transoceanic passenger service. “We welcome China Airlines, its passengers and crew members with open arms,” said Alan D. Wapner, president of the Ontario International Airport Authority. “This is a great day for aviation in Southern California as China Airlines begins service between Taiwan and Ontario. “We have worked tirelessly for more than a year to gain

the confidence of Chairman Nuan-Hsuan Hoand his leadership team and we look forward to maintaining a lasting relationship that benefits us all. We have the know-how, determination and community support to help China Airlines achieve success at Ontario.” “Extensive studies and assessments carried out by China Airlines have now finally paid off,” said China Airlines Chairman Nuan-Hsuan Ho. “The launch of the Taoyuan - Ontario route will tap into the market for travel between Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau among eastern Los Angeles’Chinese community. China Airlines has now set its sights on the market for travel between Greater Los Angeles and Southeast Asia. The new route will expand options for travel to and from Asia for metropolitan Los Angeles as a whole, fostering closer Taiwan-U.S. ties as well as strengthening links with the Asia market.” China Airlines, which increased flight frequency from four to seven days a week in response to strong customer interest, is marketing Ontario as Southern California’s new

China Airlines Boeing 777-300 at Ontario International Airport gateway to Asia, a reflection of how far the airport has come since its transfer to local control in November 2016. It is remarkable, Wapner noted, that this momentous event occurred in less than 18 months, and now other major carriers are taking note of Ontario’s new status as a global gateway. Already, other airlines are considering ONT for additional routes to China and new service to Europe. TPE is the primary International gateway airport for the New Taipei–Keelung–

Taoyuan City metro area, with more than 9 million residents, while ONT is the closest and most convenient international airport for more than 10 million Southern California residents in the Inland Empire, northern Orange County, and eastern Los Angeles County. More than 4.5 million passengers traveled through ONT last year, a 7% increase over 2016 and its best year since 2010. China Airlines projects 80,000 passengers on the new ONT-TPE route in the first year.

China Airlines’ inaugural flight arrived on time at 1:20 p.m. (PDT) with 298 passengers and crew aboard and was greeted by a water cannon salute and a “Blessing from 3 Princes” celebration. The return flight, #CI23, departed ONT at 3:45 p.m. with 338 passengers and crew members. The carrier serves the new route with Boeing 777-300ER wide-body aircraft equipped with 358 seats, including 40 in Premium Business Class and 62 in Premium Economy Class.

Oregon Initiative Introduced to Ban Assault Weapons By Desert Star Staff SALEM, Ore. – A group of religious leaders has introduced an initiative that would ban semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity magazines in Oregon. Initiative Petition 43 seeks to outlaw the sale of these weapons and require current owners to undergo background checkouts and register their guns. Rabbi Michael Cahana, one of the chief petitioners of this measure, says there’s momentum to act on gun violence after the shooting in Parkland. He says it’s important that religious leaders are

spearheading this proposal. “We felt that it was really time to, instead of just offering prayers, take action and to speak with a religious voice, to speak with a moral authority that our religions, our diverse religions call out to us, to protect life,” he explains. The group behind this initiative, along with Oregon students, plan to deliver signatures collected at the March For Our Lives to Salem today so it can start the ballot title drafting process. After that, they’ll need 88,000 signatures by July 6 to qualify for the November ballot. Opponents say the

initiative goes too far and is unconstitutional. Oregon state lawmakers say if it passes, it won’t survive in the courts. However, Cahana says the initiative is modeled after similar laws in states such as Connecticut, which have survived challenges in court. Pastor Mark Knutson of Augustana Lutheran Church is another chief petitioner of the initiative. He says Oregon should do this for the safety of its children. “We’re not against anybody,” he says. “We just don’t want weapons of war being available and we don’t want our children to be anxious

when they go to a movie or go to school. And that’s incumbent upon every adult in Oregon to come alongside these young leaders - not to empower them. They’re already very

powerful. But to walk alongside and make this happen.” The petition includes exceptions for the military, law enforcement and licensed firearms dealers.

reating a business from the ground up is no small endeavor. From planning to financing to putting standard business services in place, there’s a lot to tackle. All of that is in addition to operating the day-today business. To overcome these obstacles, franchising is an ideal solution for many aspiring business owners. It provides the advantages of business ownership, but with the added support of a recognized brand and an established method of doing business. Partnering with a franchise like The UPS Store offers numerous benefits. Flexibility. Opening a franchise allows you to enjoy the freedom and flexibility of making your own business decisions and being your own boss, while working toward your goals of personal and financial independence at your own pace. Start-up resources. Getting a new business off the ground requires a wide range of activity, from site selection and lease negotiation to hiring and training staff. A franchise can help you navigate these early decisions and needs with a deep pool of experience and knowledge to help overcome the hurdles you may encounter. Training. Even a well-educated business owner has room to learn. With a franchise, you have the opportunity to receive in-depth training in areas such as business operations, technical systems, human resources, marketing and financial management.

Networking opportunities. Connecting with other franchisees at area meetings, regional conferences and national conventions helps you stay informed of industry trends, discover new tools and resources, and develop lasting relationships with fellow franchisees. The result is a peer group that has intimate knowledge of your business model that can serve as a valuable resource as your business grows. Product development. Part of developing your business is understanding your customers’ needs and introducing new products and solutions. As a franchise owner, you can contribute insight to the process but focus on running your business while development experts dedicate themselves to researching and innovating new products and services that can help you better serve your customers. Marketing support. Many franchises conduct national advertising campaigns to build brand awareness, while regional efforts and local store marketing can build excitement in your market. A layered marketing plan extends the reach of your marketing budget and lends credibility to your business. Financing assistance. Funding your franchise according to your unique goals and background can help eliminate many of the financial pitfalls that those without experience or industry expertise may encounter. Learn more about franchising and the options available to aspiring small business owners at TheUPSStoreFranchise.com.

A Milestone Accomplishment A focus on small business is driving big results for one national retailer. The nation’s largest franchise system of retail shipping, print and business service centers, The UPS Store, Inc., is now 5,000 locations strong. “The UPS Store network is made up of dedicated individuals and families who are committed to serving small business owners, customers and their communities,” said Chris Adkins, vice president of franchise development for The UPS Store. “We look forward to welcoming more franchisees into our network as we continue to challenge ourselves to find new ways we can bring convenience and value to our customers.” Over the years, the retail concept has expanded to include a range of solutions for small business owners, creating a one-stop shop for small-business support. Small business owners can find resources such as notary services, shredding, mailbox and locker rental, and, in some cases, even inventory management solutions, as well as the packing and shipping services that business and non-business customers alike can utilize.

5 Tips for Creating a Business Plan

Once you’ve settled on a business model that meets your needs, developing a business plan is an essential next step. These five tips can help you get started: n Think

long-term. A solid business plan should account for your start-up, of course, but also the longer range future of your operations. Consider how you want your business to look five years down the road. Create goals and build in milestones to chart your progress on that long-term path.

n Write

it yourself. No one can embrace your vision as completely as you can and developing the plan yourself gives you a deep understanding of every aspect of the business, which is essential for good management. Even if you hand over certain responsibilities down the road, being aware of each aspect of your business can make you a stronger, more successful leader.

n Review

the plan over time. Know that time brings change. The business climate and other variables that influenced your original plan will likely shift over the course of your ownership. That’s why it’s important to revisit your plan at least annually to ensure your original roadmap is still on the right track strategically.

n Share

your plan with others. Inviting input from an adviser or experienced friend or colleague is a great way to spur new ideas and identify potential problem areas. Be sure you’re prepared to accept constructive criticism to help shape the best possible business plan.

n Stick

to it. After all the sweat equity you invest in creating your business plan, the worst thing you can do is allow it to collect dust on a shelf. Use the plan to guide you in launching and growing your business. When business is booming and you’re too busy to think strategically, you’ll be grateful to have a wellconceived plan to rely upon.

By Desert Star Staff Facebook is being sued by a prominent civil rights group for alleged discrimination in advertising. The plaintiffs say Facebook allowed landlords to exclude women and people with children from seeing housing ads. The National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) and three of its member organizations filed the lawsuit against the social media giant in a New York City federal court on Tuesday. According to the lawsuit, Facebook created lists that make it possible for landlords and real estate agents to limit who sees their rental or sales advertisements based on family status and sex. This means that certain sections of the population, such as women and people with children, would not be able to view or receive such ads. “Facebook’s platform is

the virtual equivalent of posting a for-rent sign that says No Families with Young Kids or No Women, but it does so in an insidious and stealth manner so that people have no clue they have been excluded on the basis of family status or sex,” Fred Freiberg of New York’s Fair Housing Justice Center said in a statement. The housing groups claim that they have conducted investigations which confirm Facebook’s practices are “discriminatory” and violate federal housing laws. “The illegal exclusion of women and children from housing opportunities should never be an option,” said Keenya Robertson, president and CEO of Housing Opportunities Project for Excellence, a Floridabased housing charity. Facebook was embroiled in a similar scandal in 2016,

when it was revealed that its filters enabled advertisers to target users based on race. The nonprofit investigative journalism group ProPublica found that housing ads could exclude African-Americans, Asians and Hispanics using

the “ethnic affinity” feature built into Facebook’s advertising algorithms. Facebook scrapped the feature in November 2016. The latest lawsuit comes at an acutely painful time for the social media giant. The US Federal Trade Commission

announced on Monday that it was investigating Facebook over alleged privacy breaches, in the wake of revelations that data harvesting firm Cambridge Analytica had access to personal user information.

By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump will be relieved to learn that Stormy Daniels, the adult film actress who allegedly had an affair with him in 2006, does not have a “Monica Lewinsky type” dress that could be tested for DNA. Michael Avenatti, the lawyer representing Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, clarified the rumors in a tweet on Tuesday. “There is no dress to be tested for DNA,” Avenatti said in a tweet. Daniels appeared on CBS’s ‘60 Minutes’ last

Sunday to speak about her alleged affair with the president, despite signing a non-disclosure agreement and receiving a payment of $130,00 from Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, which was designed to keep her quiet. She is now claiming the NDA is invalid because it was not signed by Trump and she is suing Cohen for defamation. Rumors about DNA evidence began circulating when Daniels’ friend and fellow porn actress Alana Evans claimed that she still had the dress from “that night”

in her possession. It was possible, Evans suggested, that Daniels kept the dress as a “keepsake” from her night with the future president. In her 60 Minutes interview, Daniels accused Trump of having sent someone to physically threaten her in 2011, after she gave an interview to ‘In Touch’ magazine about her alleged affair with Trump. Avenatti said on Twitter that his team was “making progress” on identifying the person responsible for making that threat. Trump has also been

accused of having a 10-month long affair with Playboy model Karen McDougal in 2006. McDougal recently publicly apologized to

Trump’s wife, Melania, during a CNN interview. Trump has repeatedly denied having an affair with Daniels or McDougal.

Thousands Demonstrate at Palm Springs ‘March For Our Lives’

KMIR Max Rodriguez Palm Springs, CA - The Coachella Valley community joined the over 800 towns and cities around the world on Saturday’s March For Our Lives. The demonstration was a nation-wide event that brought out hundreds of thousands of people to rally against gun violence. John Terry, a student from Desert Hot Springs High School, was one of the leaders marching and speaking at the Palm Springs demonstration. “This march to me is at least to stand-up for my safety and our peer’s safety,” Terry said. “To make sure something like Parkland doesn’t happen again, we should have to go to our schools or movie theater and worry if whether we are getting shot.” Residents filled the Palm Springs High School stadium to unite for the same message. Asziah McAfee is also a student from Desert Hot Springs; she said, “Enough is enough, we are not going to let this keep going on, we are going to make a change, and the change needs to come right now.” She said she is marching to remember the lives lost during mass shootings, but she said

the primary goal is to create a national change in gun laws. “These lives are being taken, and we are not just going to sit there and wait for the adults who are supposed to be protecting us from doing something,” McAfee said, “Because they haven’t been doing something for the past 200 years.” President Donald Trump proposed arming teachers to make schools safer after a high school shooting in Parkland, Florida that killed 17 people.

But Terry does not think that is a good idea for the classroom. Terry said, “A teacher that you feared the most or hated the most and then arming them with a weapon to supposedly protect you, I am not saying that they won’t protect you, but that brings more fear onto us.” Many of the marchers said they do not want a complete ban on guns, but they do advocate for more conservative gun laws. McAfee said, “We don’t stop after a week, we don’t

stop after a month, we don’t stop after a year, it’s something that happens every year, and until the government listens to us, we are going to keep protesting.” The United States Justice Department is proposing to ban bump-stocks, a gun accessory that makes a semiautomatic weapon shoot like a machine gun, but until then students said they would continue to march. A national school walk-out is scheduled for April 20. Source: KMIR

Oscar Winner “Shape of Water” Now On DVD Guillermo del Toro’s imaginative, romantic sci-fi fantasy “The Shape of Water” entered this year’s Oscar race with 14 nominations and walked away with four golden statuettes: an Oscar for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Production Design and Best Original Score. Set in Baltimore in the early 1960’s, the storyline for “The Shape of Water” focuses on a young, mute woman. Elisa Esposito (Sally Hawkins, “Blue Jasmine,” “Happy Go Lucky”) who works as a cleaning lady in a government facility and a creature from the Amazon that is half man, half fish (Doug Jones). The Aquaman, found by an American team of scientists headed by Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon), was captured and brought to America for future research. In the Amazon, it was considered a god, but to Strickland “it” is only a creature to be studied and then destroyed. As a small boy, Del Toro was fascinated by the 1954 film “Creature From the Black

Lagoon” and wondered, even at that young age, why the creature never got the girl. With his award-winning feature “The Shape of Water” the creature finally gets his chance. However, Del Toro’s highly imaginative fairy-fish-tale, cowritten by “Game of Thrones” producer Vanessa Taylor, has lots more on its mind. Not only does it focus on an unusual love story, but it also takes a look at American life in the early 1960s, a time when many people were doing very well financially, and many others were not. As Charles Dickens might say, “It was the best of times and the worst of times,” depending on your social status. For example, Elisa’s neighbor, Giles (Richard Jenkins), is a commercial artist who is having a tough time finding work because photographs are rapidly replacing art in advertising. Giles keeps painting, hoping his circumstances will change. But will they? In the evenings he and Elisa watch old movies on TV. Both are big

movie fans, and their adjoining apartments are situated over the little movie theater below. At work, Elisa has another very close friend, Zelda Fuller (Octavia Spencer). They sweep and clean together, and Zelda is very protective of her speechless co-worker. When Aquaman is placed in a particular section of the facility, no one seems to

notice that Elisa often comes in and eats her lunch with him. She soon befriends him and teaches him to sign language. He is a quick study. She is horrified when she learns that Strickland plans to kill and dissect this sensitive, intelligent creature. At this point, she is willing to do anything in her power to save him. But what can she do?

“The Shape of Water” may not be for everyone, but for those who enjoy science fiction blended with romance, this is a thoughtful, unique piece of storytelling. “The Shape of Water” is rated R for sexual content, graphic nudity, violence, and language. Running time: 2 hours, 3 minutes.

Inner City Youth Orchestra commemorates the life of MLK Jr.

Photos by Greg Moore By Desert Star Staff On Wednesday, April 4, 2018, the Inner-City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA) will present a concert to commemorate the life and contribution of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles County Center. The free show takes place on the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination. The evening will feature a prelude to the actual concert when a symbolic shot at the exact time that Dr. King was shot followed by a period of reflective music performed from 6:01 p.m. until 7:05 p.m. when he was pronounced dead. A

formal program will then follow featuring the orchestra and a chorus of 150 to 200 performing “I Have A Dream,” composed by conductor Charles Dickerson (a choral/orchestral setting of Dr. King’s epic speech) along with other performances, speakers and video clips over the course of the evening. The performance will feature the West Coast premiere of the orchestrated setting of The Seven Last Words of the Unarmed by Joel Thompson. The music marks the final words of seven African American men who were unarmed and killed by police and other aggressors in recent history.

Founder, Executive Director Charles Dickerson whose love of music and community inspired him to establish ICYOLA in the summer of 2009 when asked by nine African American high school instrumentalists to work with them. Two years later after numerous concert performances and an invitation to perform in Washington D. C., they knew that it was time to become a formal organization. So they established their mission, to provide the musical education and opportunity for young, urbane youth who otherwise would not have the occasion to express themselves

through music. The orchestra does not require auditions or tuition only the desire and commitment to do the work. Mr. Dickerson says, “The April 4, concert is significant as a benchmark extending ICYOLA’s mission because it uses musical expression to teach invaluable life lessons tied to the values of Dr. King while providing an opportunity for the orchestra to learn great music included in the orchestra’s repertoire, and to perform music before the diverse Los Angeles community.” The Remembrance Concert honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, the 50th Anniversary of his Assassination will be performed by the Inner-City Youth of Los Angeles in association with the L. A. You skillfully avoided pathos or turning the film into a “pity party.” Speer: Thank you for seeing that. The emotional tone or color of the movie was really important because when you talk to kids who actually have XP, they don’t want to be a disease. There are presently about 150 confirmed cases in the U.S. and they think of themselves as normal kids like Bella’s character of Katie. XP is a one in a million condition so we wanted to be very honest in how we presented this story. Since it is so rare, what are the symptoms and how is it diagnosed? Speer: The symptoms show up when kids are in the playground screaming and crying from pain following a

severe sunburn, which is how they are diagnosed. There’s not a lot of information online so we had to contact people who actually have familiarity with XP. As we’ve begun promoting the movie, one of the websites that is an authority on XP, tweeted us and said that in the last 24 hours, they had gotten 100,00 hits. (Audible “wow.”) It made my day that we could help be part of awareness on some level. We never set out to make a documentary or a movie about a sickness, but it’s great that we can help with advocacy at the same time. You really walked a fine line with this story as it could have denigrated into a soppy soap opera but it was anything but that. It is beautifully done – the directing is superb, the acting is superb, the cinematography is superb. That said, why did you want to tell this particular story? Speer: Because I love love stories and because I love romantic dramas and I feel there are actually very few romantic dramas these days. It’s a genre that’s under represented. You know, there are a lot of romantic comedies, and there’s a lot of hybrids but if you go back to my favorite movies like “West Side Story,” or “Love Story,” or “Splendor in the Grass,” or think back to some of Betty Davis’ early work, there was a Continues on Page 17 www.desertstarweekly.com

An The Record Plant by producer alternate cut of “From Here To Eddie Kramer in December There Eventually” (recorded in 1968. The range of the material 1969), the previously-unheard is dizzying; the driving opener acid rocker “Angel Drawers,” “C’mon Everybody” twists traditional take on Hank Eddie Cochran’s approach in Williams’ “You Win Again,” the all the right places, including blistering blues rocker “Straight the shouting vocals and Shootin’ Woman” (featuring freewheeling rock ‘n’ roll attack. some killer guitar work from Later, the art damage take on Bobby Cochran) and synthSun Ra’s “Rocket #9,” an altanchored cover of Argent’s country “Fergie’s Prayer,” the “Hold Your Head Up” from racing New Orleans rocker 1982 are standouts on the first “Mama Get Down Those disc. Singer-songwriter/guitarist Rock and Roll Shoes,” and a John Kay has always been able countrified harmonica-adorned to infuse evolving styles into reworking of the 1962 Bruce Steppenwolf’s sonic brew, as Channel hit “Hey! Information: 1990’s Berlin Wall-themed “The Wall” and probing “Rock & Roll War” showcased on disc two. The third disc features 13 tracks featured on the troupe’s 1995 release “Live at 25.” The performances sizzle with power; the blues rocker “Move Over,” the outlaw countrified version of Hank Snow’s “I’m Moving On,” Chicago bluesmeets-rock attack of Willie Dixon’s “I’m Your Hootchie Cootchie Man” and rousing takes on Steppenwolf’s biggest omnivorerecordings.com. hits (“Magic Carpet Ride” and Artist: Justin Hinds “Born to be Wild”) are among and the Dominoes the highlights. released in 1984, Omnivore Recordings’ new reissue of Justin Hinds and the Dominoes’ “Travel With Love” features the original eight-track LP and 10 bonus tracks. The voices of Hinds and the Dominoes (backing vocalists Dennis Sinclair and Junior Dixon) blend in polished perfection on a collection of laid-back and positive-minded reggae songs. The melodic “Get Ready Rock Steady,” wistful “Miss Wendell” and musically dynamic-and-lyrically insightful “In The Jungle” are among the strong original songs penned by Hinds featured on “Travel With Love.” Particularly powerful is “The Rainbow,” a beautiful track enhanced by the work of a nuanced horn section. You might like if you enjoy: Justin Hinds, reggae music Tell me more: Released in 1992, “Know Jah Better” finds Hinds bringing newer sounds into the blend of ska and reggae styles he helped pioneer and explore earlier in his career, now tapping into the Jamaican dancehall scene for what would be his final full-length studio album. The standouts on this disc include the intoxicating “Want More,” the spirited title track, catchy “No Place Like Home” and “Picking Up Chips.” Information:

omnivorerecordings.com. Artist: 6 String Drag Title: High Hat (Schoolkids Records) You might like if you enjoy: Old 97’s, Son Volt, the Jayhawks Tell me more: Alt-country rockers 6 String Drag emerged from Raleigh, North Carolina

in 1993, helping create a new sound and style along with Texas’ Old 97’s, Minnesota’s Jayhawks and Georgia’s Drive-By Truckers that is essentially the blueprint for a slew of modern-day Americana groups. In January 2018, Schoolkids Records (formerly Second Motion) issued a 20th Anniversary Reissue of the band’s 1997 disc “High Hat.” Produced by Steve Earle, the LP’s songs sound as great as ever and retain the bite of a contemporary release. Singer Kenny Roby’s emotive delivery of the songs is the icing on the sonic cake; the arrangements across the 15 tracks impress at every turn. The anthemic “Bottle of Blues,” pretty “Elaine” and freewheeling “Gasoline Maybelline” are early nuggets on the LP. “Cold Steel Brace” is mostly sparse and evocative, but has an explosive section that adds just the right amount of powder. The jangly rocker “Ghost,” Dixieland-flavored “Over & Over” and bonus track “Lorene” (the latter a cover of the Louvin Brothers classic) are among the other essentials on a fantastic release. In addition to being re-released on audio CD and on most digital formats, “High Hat” is also available for the first time on vinyl. Information: SchoolKidsRecords.com.

Acceptance and Empowerment: LGBT Health Awareness

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ending the fear of discrimination and creating an inclusive medical environment - those are among the goals of National LGBT Health Awareness Week, which runs through Friday. At Equitas Health in Columbus, education manager, Karen Nicosia, says there are social determinants that impact the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Ohioans and make them less likely to seek medical care. “When you have less acceptance from family or peers, there are real consequences,” she says. “It affects their mental health and their physical health.” JC Chen, a medical student at OSU, says that within the health-care profession, the needs of LGBT patients are unfortunately often siloed into the areas of sexual and mental health. “The curriculum is very ‘othered,’” Chen says. “We don’t really think of that population when we think of typical everyday diseases like high blood pressure or diabetes.” Equitas Health works to engage LGBT individuals to take control of their

Nicosia says that includes working with providers to create a comfortable and welcoming space. “There’s more to inclusivity than just slapping a rainbow sticker in every room,” Nicosia explains. “We go through health disparities, but we also go

through more practical stuff like how do you ask someone their pronouns? Is this a genderinclusive restroom? Do the pamphlets reflect the patient?” Chen developed patientempowerment training for Equitas Health, which they say includes education to help LGBT individuals better manage their health and reduce anxieties during medical visits. “Specific things like emotion regulation just to kind

the US census until it was scrapped in 1950. “Including a citizenship question on the 2020 census is not just a bad idea – it is illegal,” Becerra said in a tweet. According to research from the Public Policy Institute of California, Becerra’s native California is home to over 2.3 million illegal immigrants. Becerra fears that these immigrants – who make up 10 percent of California’s workforce – would be discouraged from filling out the census by a citizenship question. This, he argues, would result in an inaccurate population count, the loss of

one of California’s seats in the House of Representatives, and a shortfall in federal funds for Californian cities. Becerra enjoys the support of 18 other Democratic state attorneys general, who pressed Ross’ department last month against including a citizenship question. They argued that including such a question would be unconstitutional. The Department of Justice, however, said it needs citizenship data to better enforce the Voting Rights Act. Immigrant communities overwhelmingly vote Democrat, and several party

representatives and senators took to Twitter to voice support for Becerra’s suit. Former US attorney general Eric Holder – best known for his role in the ATF’s disastrous ‘Fast and Furious’ gunrunning program – announced today that he too would go to court to fight the reintroduction of the citizenship question. Holder said that the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, which he leads, would fight the Trump administration’s decision, which he called “irresponsible.” “The addition of a citizenship question to the census questionnaire is a direct attack on our representative democracy,” he said. Becerra’s decision to take legal action is no surprise. In 2017, he peppered the Trump administration with lawsuit after lawsuit – 24 in total. He opposed the administration’s travel ban, opposed the border wall, opposed immigration enforcement, and opposed the Trump administration’s directive seeking to ban transgender people from the military, among others. The Department of Commerce must provide Congress with a copy of the final wording of the census by March 31.

CA AG to sue Trump administration over ‘il egal’ census question

By Desert Star Staff California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said on Monday that he intends to sue the Trump administration over a controversial question on citizenship in the 2020 census. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross announced a re-introduction of the citizenship question in a post on his department’s website yesterday. The decision, the post read, was made following a request in December from Jeff Sessions’ Department of Justice. A question on citizenship previously appeared on

Coyote Stageworks Presents A.R. Gurney’s “The Cocktail Hour”

The Cocktail Hour Full Cast Jeff Jones Chuck Yates Lee Bryant Yo Younger. Photo by David A Lee. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association A.R. Gurney is one America’s most prolific playwrights. His canon boasts more than fifty plays that explore the machinations, the philosophies, and the lifestyles of America’s New England upper-class families over the last thirty years. And he ought to know; he’s a Buffalo, NY-born son, of a privileged American family, and a graduate of Williams College, Massachusetts and Ivy League Yale School of Drama. “The Cocktail Hour”, is a semi-autobiographical comedy that offers a peek into the world of one upper-crust waspish family as they engage in their nightly ritual – the cocktail get together before dinner. After all, doesn’t everyone practice this ritual in their own home? Of course not. Ninety-five percent of us don’t employ servants to cook and then serve our meals. We have Mom and other family home grown talent to perform those chores, which, I dare say, they enjoy doing. One of the spectacular features of this insightful, biting, comedy-satire, is the splendid set design by Josh Claybaugh. From the moment the curtain goes up, we are smack dab in the middle of a the drawing room, in a home of privilege. Everything we see drips with the lifestyle of ‘old school’ New England. Conservative politics, and family values, the Steinway grand piano, and the obligatory Portrait of the family Patriarch over the fireplace, the works! “The Cocktail Hour”, directed by David Youse, is produced at the Annenberg Theatre by Coyote StageWorks founding artistic director Chuck Yates with the following cast: Lee Bryant as the ginloving mother Ann, who at times plays the role of family peacemaker, but dearly loves her cocktails; Jeffrey Jones as Bradley the irascible, hypochondriac father who claims he’s dying and that the world has gone to rot; Chuck Yates as book editor and playwright son John, who has come home to ask permission www.desertstarweekly.com

from Bradley if he can publish his latest play which is about the family, and Yo Younger as his spoiled, needy, sister Nina, who is upset with John for not writing a larger role for the character that plays her. It’s imagined ‘slights’ like this that partially fuels her ennui and her denial that her lifestyle,of doing nothing with her life, is self-inflicted. Needless to say, the characters in this family are self-absorbed and don’t have a clue as how ‘traditional’ families function, and worse yet, show no inclination to look inward for solutions. It’s a little bit reminiscent of what is happening economically and socially to America today. Those who have a history of not dealing with their problems and issues, and who are oblivious or satisfied with the status quo, usually discover that a bumpy road lies ahead. In this play there is a lot comedy situations to ease the pain with laughs. Cocktail parties fueled by nature’s truth serum – alcohol - produce loose lips that aren’t always filtered by empathetic or correct behavior. John has gone down that bumpy road with a past playwriting effort that was too close to the family bone for Bradley. Children of successful parents usually seek their approval. John’s gaffe of wanting to surprise his father with hit play that instead fizzled, resulted in the estrangement of Bradley and John for a period of time. Now, John turns up with a new manuscript in hand, asking for his father to read it and give his permission to publish it. Bradley refuses, saying the last family-based play John wrote embarrassed the entire Buffalo business community, to say nothing of their socially prominent friends. Nina, however, jumps at the chance for a preview peek. To those of us outside that august circle of families with pedigrees, it seems to be a lot fuss and much ado about nothing. It’s the witty dialogue and skilled delivery of zingers that propel this comedy of manners American-style,

snappily along. It’s a sharp ensemble cast where each actor has moments in which to shine, and there are many of them. Lee Bryant, is a scene stealer with her fey style as Ann. Yo Younger makes the most of her shallow character Nina, Jeffrey Jones as Bradley, soldiers on despite his cold and his script crutch Chuck Yates, has the unenviable plot-part character of John to play, which he does with understated style. As a side bar note: the audience on opening night was

informed that one of actors has been nursing a cold for two weeks. As a way of honoring the theatrical tradition of ‘the show must go on’, said he will rely on a carry-on script as a backup. Audiences are incredibly empathetic and supportive individuals at times like this. God love em! However, a few more rehearsals should do the trick for Mr. Jones and cast to all be on the same page for the upcoming last three performances. In the technical department

the creative team led by director Youse, includes the aforementioned set designer Josh Claybaugh, along with lighting designer David Simpson, and costume designer Frank Cazares who create the mood and appropriate costumes, respectively. Phil Gold, stage manages the production. “The Cocktail Hour”, performs at the Annenberg Theatre inside the Palm Springs Art Museum and runs through April 1, 2018.
