Support Ukraine Ukrainian Americans Rally in Sacramento as Russia Invades Homeland By Desert Star Staff The Ukrainian American community rallied on the state Capitol steps Thursday, expressing outrage over Russia’s ongoing invasion

of Ukraine. Sacramento is home to about 100,000 Ukrainian Americans watching events unfold in horror. Vladimir Skots, chairman of Ukrainian American

House, a group based in Sacramento which brings the Ukrainian diaspora together, said he supports the solid financial sanctions imposed by President Joe Biden.

“We are calling for the whole world, for NATO, to unite and protect Ukraine,” Skots stated. “Because we have to stop this evil over there in Ukraine. Because if

His accounts of history intrigued him. As a writer, you have to evaluate everything correctly. What you remember will be different than what is true. You have to find the absolute truth by looking at the facts and not memory. He said you must read the whole paper every day and judge yourself by the content and not just the headlines. for their hit singles “Walk Away Renee” and “Pretty Ballerina,” the Left Banke’s story extended beyond those ‘60s radio favorites as evidenced on a newly-released expanded edition of the troupe’s third and final album “Strangers on a Train.” The new remastered collection rightfully celebrates the New York-spawned baroque pop group’s final recordings gathered together on an essential disc of 16 outstanding cuts. Originally featuring the talents of songwriter/keyboardist Michael Brown, lead singer Steve Martin Caro, bassist/vocalist Tom Finn and drummer/singer George Cameron, the Left Banke recorded two LPs in the late 1960s (“Walk Away Renée/Pretty Ballerina” and “The Left Banke Too”) before breaking up in 1969. However, the world was reintroduced to the Left Banke via “Strangers on a Train” issued in 1986; that album was actually a collection tracked in 1978 by Caro,

Finn and Cameron. The final chapter came in 2001 when Brown invited Caro to lay down vocals on demos for a hopedfor Left Banke reunion — six of those songs complete the new Omnivore Recordings title. The enticing title track, melodic “Heartbreaker,” Beatlesque “Hold On Tight” and wistful “Yesterday’s Love” are among the strong early selections on the set. The chamber pop gem “And One Day,” gorgeous “I Can Fly,” harmonies-filled “Only My Opinion” and funk-meetsdisco “Queen of Paradise” along with previously-unheard bonus tracks (notably the lovely “Airborne,” confessional “I Don’t Know” and gorgeous “Until The End”) help keep the momentum soaring high. Jason Falkner, Dada Tell me more: Texas-based singer-songwriter-guitarist Lannie Flowers is back with a marvelous new album “Flavor of the Month.” A compilation of his “March To Home” singles series issued in 2019, the 14-track album is an essential addition for fans of Flowers’ trio of concept albums that loosely chronicle his life from teenager to touring rock and roller to settling down at home (2008’s “Same Old Story,” 2010’s “Circles” and 2021’s “Home”) as well as anyone who loves great power pop. Flowers’ songs are original, smart and performed with a master’s touch — his signature sound a perfect blend of melody, shining songcraft and emotional heft. Additionally, it doesn’t hurt that Flowers is a top-tier lead vocalist. The newlyremixed tracks on “Flavor of the Month” delight at every turn. The yearning rocker “Don’t Make Me Wait,” psychedelictinged “Lost in a Daydream,” exuberant “Doin’ Fine,” romantic ballad “About You,” tuneful “Day Glow All Night” and power pop nugget “Where Did All The Fun Go?” are among my faves on the disc. Listen to the flamenco touches on “Let It Go,” fusion of harmonies and guitar crunch on the title track, and lavishly-layered “What Did I Know” and “Summer Blue” to further discover the myriad of wide-ranging talents displayed by Flowers. Step by Step: 6 Tips for Preventing Falls By Desert Star Staff New things are more important to older adults than their independence -- being able to do what they’d like when they’d like. But freedom can be fleeting. Something unexpected, like a fall, can change everything. That’s why it’s essential for older adults and their loved ones to take steps now to reduce the risk of a fall from happening. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), three million older people are treated in emergency rooms each year because of injuries caused by falls Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This includes broken bones and head injuries that can rob individuals of their freedom.

Even having a fear of falling can restrict individuals from enjoying their life to the fullest. Thankfully, many falls can be prevented with a bit of forethought and advance planning, according to Dr. J.B. Sobel, chief medical officer for Medicare, with Cigna, one of the nation’s largest insurers, which serves hundreds of thousands of older adults through its Medicare plans. Dr. Sobel recommends older adults take the following precautions to prevent falls and increase their peace of mind. Get an annual eye exam. More than 12 million Americans aged 40 years and older experience vision impairment, putting them at greater risk of falling. They need to get an annual eye exam and make sure that they wear their glasses as instructed. Many Medicare Advantage (MA) plans, such as those offered through Cigna, provide some vision coverage at no extra cost. Review medications. People tend to take more medicines as they age. Unfortunately, some of these medications, or a combination of drugs, can cause dizziness or confusion, resulting in falls. Seniors should talk to their doctor or pharmacist about the medicines they are taking, including over-the-counter medications, regarding any interactions or unwanted side effects.

Do strength and balance exercises. Regular exercise strengthens muscles and improves balance and flexibility, helping reduce the chance of falls. Many MA plans include a fitness benefit at no extra cost. The benefit may consist of kits, bands and videos that can be used at home to help limit exposure to COVID-19 while achieving the benefits of exercise. Patients should always talk to their doctor about what exercises are right for them. Limit alcohol consumption. Even a tiny amount of alcohol can affect a person’s balance

and reflexes, leading to a fall. According to the National Institute on Aging, alcohol is a factor in 60% of falls in older Americans. For those individuals who may need it, Medicare covers alcohol abuse screening, counseling and treatment. Please be sure to discuss these types of issues with your doctor. Ensure a safe home. Seniors can benefit from having grab bars installed inside and outside the bathtub tub or shower and next to the toilet and having railings installed on both sides of stairs. Also, potential tripping hazards, such as floor mats, area rugs

or extension cords, should be removed or taped down, both inside and outside the home. Be careful with face masks. Wearing a face mask is a reality of the times, even after a COVID-19 vaccination, but face masks can restrict peripheral vision. When wearing a face mask, make sure it is snug, covering both your nose and mouth and take slow and measured steps. Those who wear glasses should wash the lenses with soap and water (if permitted by the manufacturer), Continues on Page 6

HOROSCOPES ARIES

A quiet peaceful change enters your life. You become sensitive, compassionate and sympathetic towards everyone, especially those in need. You’re drawn to things mystical, religious, spiritual, meditative, all functioning behind the scenes and the why isn’t apparent. You seek forgiveness while offering it. You allow no persecutions of any kingdom. Here your Aries comes forth.

TAURUS All that you do, consider and ponder upon has to do with groups, friendships, organizations and the forming of community that restores and reforms society. You know what’s coming. You are concerned with offering new ideas, creating collective objectives, helping others realize hopes, wishes and dreams that sustain life on earth. There is a mantram that is useful to say. “Let reality govern my every thought and truth be the master of my life.”

GEMINI You can use the mantram for Taurus, too. It’s very useful for the dissolution of glamours (illusions, deceptions, confusions, etc.) not only the glamours of self but when encountering the glamours (distortions, miasmas, illusions) of others. Eliminating glamours helps us focus on accomplishing goals, achieve a successful life, and allows for an honorable reputation.

MARCH 2 – 7, 2022 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

You have authoritative tasks to perform and an influential position to fulfill for the saving of humanity. You might begin to prepare now.

CANCER The light of Pisces Sun is providing you with aspirations and high ideals to learn something new that develops a new level of consciousness leading to wisdom. Remember to never assume a position of knowing until it is experienced or its validity proven. You will expand your mind through travel, study, a philosophy or encountering the elements, the soil and the earth (gardening). Then you are to teach others. Be adventurous and experimental.

LEO You search for your values. They have changed over the years. You explore the values of others, listening to their talk of sex, intimacy, money, death, regeneration. You discover your ability to intuit and sense (possibly diagnose) illness in friends, extending this ability to pets and small animals. You are like a detective. Read several mysteries, the type that provide courage through conflict. Be not jealous or combative. You will lose. Life in the shadows for a spell is best.

VIRGO You find yourself through relationship interactions, whether intimate, close friends or who and what you identify

with in the moment. You want to cooperate, seeking harmony within all situations so a sense of life-in-balance emerges. From person to the political, from social justice to world peace, you travel the range of relationships within the world of humanity’s endeavors. Do you remember the esoteric formula for peace?

LIBRA You become practical in all ways, tending to daily necessities for self and others. You become the social worker for the world, using your gifts and capacities to create roles for others so they too can be of assistance and of service. You make improvements wherever you are, tending to details, being scientific and concrete in your healing information. You drop all levels of criticism. You understand forgiveness. You forgive.

SCORPIO When observing you for a time we sense a new level of dignity emanating from you. We also sense a new level of creative self-expression, which in time can initiate a new artform that helps restore the art of living to yourself and perhaps for the world. Sometimes, you focus on happiness, things that entertain and playful. You speculate on ways resources can manifest and be used to assist those in need. You look to your past. You write about sadness. You deepen into this daily.

SAGITTARIUS Family continues to be your concern – creating, tending to, or writing about family heritage and traditions. Your history is like a tree growing within you, its roots go deep; the trunk is your life force, and the leaves how you interact with the world. You realize how important parents were. Whether they were capable enough or not, all parents are “good enough” in terms of what we must learn. We eventually realize we actually chose them. A radical thought. Moodiness may assail you. Take shelter for a spell.

give away. You will seek ways of making money and will find a state of reserved strength that sustains conservative yet Aquarian values. You will seek comfort and new ways to keep yourself warm. Love is all around you in the magical kingdom called Earth.

PISCES

There’s a sense of well-being, a radiance and willingness in all that you do. You will initiate new ideas others will ponder upon, accept, reject and/or react to. Election by Acclamation, Self-Campaigning, and Cumulative Voting By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Mr. Richardson: Starting in 2022, all HOAs have the option of utilizing the acclamation procedures in Civil Code §5103 when “the number of qualified candidates is not more than the number of vacancies to be elected.” My question: Do CCRs have to be changed before the HOA can implement the acclamation process? A.Y., Bakersfield

90 days before the deadline for nominations (Civil Code Section 5103(b)(1)). There is a second notice between 7 and 30 days before close of nominations, and a prompt response is required to each nominator and nominee. Updating HOA election rules and incorporating the process required by Section 5103 is a good idea. That amendment need not pursue the twostep, 28-day notice process required for most rule changes, because rule changes that ”merely repeat the existing law” are exempt from the process pursuant to Civil Code Section Dear A.Y.: No, the CC&Rs 4355(b)(5). So, this amendment do not have to be changed could be accomplished in (unless they specifically bar one open board meeting acclamation). The new Civil with the normal agenda Code Section 5103 is a boon for notification. Dear L.L.: Under Civil Code Section 5200(a)(9), members can request and receive a copy of the names, address, and email address of any member who has not opted out of allowing that information to be shared. Civil Code Section 4515 protects the right of members to campaign, and the middle 30-day period provided for by Civil Code Section 5115(b) seems to be intended to allow the nominees to campaign before ballots are sent out. Therefore, yes; any homeowner can do what you describe. Sincerely, Kelly. Dear Kelly, we tried to get a bombastic braggart off the board by a vote. I just can’t believe the recall formula that our attorney had us use is fair. I would appreciate your opinion on the recall formula. D.S., Orange, CA.

Corporations Code Section 7222(b)(1) the “no” votes count for more than the “yes” votes. This is yet another reason why most HOAs remove cumulative voting when they update their governing documents. Cumulative voting creates more problems for HOAs than it helps. Best regards, Kelly.

Dear D.S.: I can tell from your narrative that the governing documents provide for cumulative voting, in which a member can stack their votes for candidates instead of casting one vote per candidate. Cumulative voting makes recalling individual directors very difficult, because under

Program Providing Extra Fruit, Vegetables to Kids Set to Expire By Desert Star Staff Advocates warn that lowincome families may have to cut back on fruits and vegetables starting in April - if Congress allows part of their food benefits to expire. President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan bumped up the amount families get to buy fruits and vegetables as part of the Women Infants and Children program, called WIC. Shannon Whaley - director of research and evaluation for Public Health Foundation Enterprises WIC program, a part of Heluna Health in LA - said unless Congress extends that bump by March 11, benefits go back to $9 a month for kids younger than five. “For a child to intake all their monthly vegetables, five fruits and vegetables a day, a child would need $48 a month,” said Whaley. “What the cashvalue benefit bump has done

is enable the WIC program to provide half of those fruits and vegetables, so $24 a month.” In California, almost a million low-income pregnant women, mothers of newborns and children younger than five depend on WIC. Brian Dittmeier - senior director of public policy for the National WIC Association - said the benefit helps families afford healthy food and boosts farmers and retailers in the process. “Access to healthy foods in early childhood can shape lifelong taste preferences and build healthier diets in the long run,” said Dittmeier. UCLA Fielding School of Public Health Professor of Community Health Sciences May Wang is an expert on WIC. She said in the past, adding more vegetables to the program produced measurable results. “When WIC had that change in the food package in

2009,” said Wang, “We saw a decrease in childhood obesity in the 3- to 5-year-olds.” Kiran Saluja - the executive director for the PHFE WIC Program in LA - said Congress

Empowering Girls Globally By Supporting Equitable Access to Education

By Desert Star Staff Sometimes forgotten amidst the pandemic that upended the world is a global learning crisis that forced more than 1.6 billion children out of school. This immense loss of learning and development resulted in permanent setbacks for an entire generation - disproportionately

affecting girls, according to a joint report between UNICEF, UNESCO and the World Bank. More than 10 million girls who left school temporarily due to the COVID-19 lockdowns may never return. Moreover, dropping out of school can negatively impact girls’ entire lives. In terms of child marriage, this

shake off the excess liquid and allow them to air dry. This can help provide a fog barrier. “Today, many older adults take good care of themselves and feel younger than they are,” Sobel said. “They are rightfully proud and don’t want to make concessions for their age. But a fall can happen to the best of us. So, it’s better

pandemic could force 10 million more girls to marry by 2030. Even in times of crisis, girls have an equal right to quality education and learning. You can play a role in ensuring girls worldwide have the opportunity

should extend the benefit until September and make the new rates permanent. “When Congress goes in,” said Saluja, “whether they do an omnibus bill which would take us

through September or they make a continuing resolution through September, we want to make sure that this fruit and vegetable benefit continues to stay.”

to fulfill their potential. An organization like UNICEF USA has resources to help girls receive a quality education. Advocate for the Keeping Girls in School Act One way to take action in the fight for girls’ education is by urging members of Congress to co-sponsor and help pass the Keeping Girls in School Act. This bipartisan act would empower girls worldwide by authorizing the U.S. Agency for International Development to enter into innovative and result-based grant programs that reduce adolescent girls’ barriers in receiving education. By investing in girls’ educations, barriers such as child marriage, harassment, violence, care burdens and harmful gender norms keeping girls from longterm, quality education can be put to an end. In addition, evidence shows that enrolling and keeping girls in school results in a positive impact on their health and economic prosperity and the improvement of the security of their communities and countries. To help streamline the process, UNICEF USA’s Keeping

Girls in School Act page allows you to send an email to your representative in one click. Support Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Programs Accessible WASH programs can help prevent girls from missing school and falling into child labor, adolescent pregnancy and forced marriage. For many girls, schools provide a lifeline, offering vital information and support (on-site or through referral services) for nutrition; menstrual hygiene management; and broader psychosocial, sexual and reproductive health needs. Annually, UNICEF invests $1 billion in WASH programs in more than 110 countries. These funds go toward building solar-powered water pumps for communities, providing education on and products for menstrual hygiene management, equipping schools with private changing rooms, single-sex bathrooms and handwashing stations, and more. To learn more about how you can support these programs and help ensure every girl’s right to education is realized, visit unicefusa.org/ WASHforEducation. Source: UNICEF Family Features

Rock Solid Homage To World History

By Pamela Price The Museum of History in Granite, located in Felicity, CA, is the last place you would expect to find one of the world’s most inclusive outdoor museums literally created from and carefully carved in granite. The mission of the museum’s founder, Jacques-André Istel: “To Engrave in Granite Highlights of the Collective Memory of Humanity.” During the last ten years, I have attempted to describe this unusual museum in a dozen travel columns in several languages, and yet, there are nonbelievers who are certain I am writing a science fiction story. Should you be unable to locate “Felicity” on a

map, look for Yuma, Arizona, which separates California from Arizona and bingo! The two locations are approximately 12 miles apart by via I-8. I should mention you are also in the ‘dental zone,’ as Algodones, the popular Mexican dental mecca for curing troubling dental issues from tooth A Raches to porcelain veneers, is about 12 minutes (5.5 miles) from the Museum of History in Granite. As you enter this fascinating outdoor museum, you may be astonished to see a 25 ft. section of the original Eiffel Tower stairwell, which gives you a hint of the worldwide scope of the monuments contained

in the museum. The museum’s founder confirmed it is Section 12 of the original staircase from the Eiffel Tower in Paris, which he discovered during his travels and had delivered to the museum. However, the star attraction of the museum is 900 granite panels, some more than 100 feet long, engraved and chronicling the story of world history. “Historical events and personalities come to life in granite at this outdoor museum,” said Sue Townsley, former Chair of the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission. The wide-open spaces become an encyclopedia of world history from diverse topics from

Iconic Presidents- Truman and Eisenhower to Early Changes Brought by Inventive Americans. The next exhibit opens on March 4 and is called “New Oceans of the World.” It will feature a 100-foot long granite monument with 30 panels depicting various ocean scenes –from tidal basins to the deep and even naval history. Visitors are invited to meander through the outdoor exhibits as history takes on a new perspective, without a book insight. Visitors will take a visual journey in stone, exploring all manner of subjects, including the history of American entertainment, from vaudeville and opera to the cinema and

Disney’s animated cartoons. There’s even an unexpected tribute to American beverages and food revealing one granite monument’s etching of a double-decker hamburger! Historically inspired events take place throughout the year at the Museum of History in Granite, tied in with exhibits such as The History of California, The Hall of Fame of Parachuting, The History of the French Foreign Legion and The Marine Corps Korean War Memorial. This season the museum is scheduled to close on March 30. More information at www.historyingranite.org

Desert Town Hall Jon Meacham

Continued from Page 1

as he was able to talk to him. As a historian, transparency is key to the truth. September 9th changed everything in people’s lives. It became a moment of fundamental decision. Moments like that define a President. Meacham spoke about early times in America and how they relate to us today. He talked about men and times, presidents and the country using dates, people and Presidents to make his point. A few years ago, Meacham was a speaker at the Rancho Mirage Writers Fest with Singer Tim McGraw. He mentioned this as one of his opening remarks. He and Mcgraw wrote the bestselling Book, Songs of America. The Book is a celebration of the

music that has helped shape our nation. He said he was neither a Democrat nor a Republican. Instead, he had been a biographer and historian during the terms of several presidents. He mentioned many of them he has studied, from President Ronald Reagan to current President Biden. His knowledge of dates and places is uncanny. He noted the differences between earlier Presidents’ times and today’s world. He also spoke about the war in Ukraine. Democracy there is at stake. A lot of Americans don’t follow this. It’s up to the American people to listen and learn. He said you must Preserve your quality and integrity. Protect your rights, and being a good neighbor, you will protect mine. Being a

good neighbor is what makes a good president. Voting for President should be weighed carefully with facts and not emotion, likes and dislikes. Desert Youth Town Hall brought Coachella Valley Boys and Girls Club CEO Quinton Egson to speak to the selected students from local high schools. Epson talked about how he wished he had known as a teenager and what he knows now. The knowledge he

has learned is that we all need a support system. He leaned you have to stay out of trouble, go to college if you can, work, study hard and dream big. If you do all that, you can achieve many goals in life. But, if you have a problem, find someone to help you deal with it. Your life now is a blank canvas, and it’s up to you what you do with it. You will make mistakes, and it’s how you learn. Make your own

way, and do not follow others making bad choices. Listen to your parents, they are smarter than you think. He gave each student a book, “The Boys.” a memoir of Hollywood icons, Ron and Clint Howard. Students had an opportunity to ask questions from both Egson and Meacham during their time on the podium. These are not direct quotes but from my notes during the speeches.

When making their bids, all bidders except the Secretary must submit a deposit totaling $44,596.94 [10% of the Secretary’s bid] in the form of a certified check or cashier’s check made out to the Secretary of HUD. A deposit need not accompany each oral bid. If the successful bid is oral, a deposit of $44,596.94 must be presented before the bidding is closed. The deposit is nonrefundable. The remainder of the purchase price must be delivered within 30 days of the sale or at such other time as the Secretary may determine for good cause shown, time being of the essence. At the conclusion of the sale, the deposits of the unsuccessful bidders will be returned to them. The Secretary may grant an extension of time within which to deliver the remainder of the payment. All extensions will be for 15-day increments for a fee of $500.00, paid in advance. The extension fee shall be in the form of a certified or cashier’s check made payable to the Secretary of HUD. If the high bidder closes the sale prior to the expiration of any extension period, the unused portion of the extension fee shall be applied toward the amount due. If the high bidder is unable to close the sale within the required period, or within any extensions of time granted by the Secretary, the high bidder may be required to forfeit the cash deposit or, at the election of the foreclosure commissioner after consultation with the HUD representative, will be liable to HUD for any costs incurred as a result of such failure. The Commissioner may, at the direction of the HUD representative, offer the property to the second highest bidder for an amount equal to the highest price offered by that bidder. There is no right of redemption, or right of possession based upon a right of redemption, in the mortgagor or others subsequent to a foreclosure completed pursuant to the Act. Therefore, the Foreclosure Commissioner will issue a Deed to the purchaser(s) upon receipt of the entire purchase price in accordance with the terms of the sale as provided herein. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 097766-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 097766CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Know Your Kidneys - How to prevent and manage kidney disease

By Desert Star Staff You may not think much about your kidneys unless there’s a problem, but they play a vital role in your health. Your kidneys continually filter your blood to remove extra fluid and waste released from the body as urine. They also help control blood pressure and keep bones healthy. Consider this information from Know Your Kidneys, an education campaign from the American Kidney Fund, Boehringer Ingelheim and Otsuka, to understand how your kidneys work, how to protect them and help prevent kidney disease, which has no cure.

What is kidney disease? Kidney disease means your kidneys are permanently damaged and do not work as they should. This lets extra fluid and waste flow back into your bloodstream instead of leaving your body as urine. According to the American Kidney Fund, an estimated 37 million Americans live with kidney disease, and 1 in 3 adults is at risk for the disease. However, kidney disease typically does not have any symptoms until the late stages, so most people do not know they have it. Who is at risk? Kidney disease doesn’t discriminate; people of all backgrounds get it. However,

multiple barriers contribute to inequity in kidney care, including systemic racial and ethnic biases, language and cultural differences and where a person lives. These barriers make it more likely for certain people’s kidney disease to progress to kidney failure - the last stage of kidney disease. For example, Black Americans make up just 13% of the population, but they are 3.4 times more likely than white Americans to progress to kidney failure. Other risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, hereditary causes or having a family history of the disease, over the age of 60, obesity and smoking. Talking with your doctor about these risk factors is an essential step toward managing your kidney health. Barney Bentall Cosmic Dreamer

By Desert Star Staff Soaring with sentiments of hope, love, longing, and loss, multi-Platinum selling and Juno award-winning artist Barney Bentall plots a sonic constellation of Americana

to traditional Folk with the upcoming release of his new album, Cosmic Dreamer. Set for release April 22, 2022, via True North Records, the album includes the title track, “Cosmic

Dreamer” — available now! With special guests Ruth Moody, Valentino Trapani, and Adrian Dolan joining on three songs, the 11-track album features nine new all-originals from the prolific artist alongside

two covers — Bob Dylan’s “You Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” and Gordon Lightfoot’s “Shadows.” Cosmic Dreamer marks the seventh solo release for Bentall and now tallies over 20 overall when including his JUNO Award-winning band, The Legendary Hearts and his other releases with The High Bar Gang, Bentall Taylor Ulrich and The Cariboo Express. “I wanted to experiment with other things and everybody, bless their hearts, was very good about it,” he shared in an interview of his everbroadening range of roots, country, bluegrass — and even instrumental, as heard in his recent album RanchWriters, written and released with longtime friend, Spirit of the West’s Geoffrey Kelly. “It’s important for me to write songs and try different music styles. Why limit myself? To me, it’s just good music.” COVID-19 caused Bentall

to spend less time with other songwriters and musicians than he would have in the past, so Cosmic Dreamer has fewer cowrites than previous efforts. Bentall co-produced the album with multi-instrumentalist Dolan, and much of it was recorded and mixed at Dolan’s Track + Trestle studio in Ladysmith, B.C. The albumclosing “Cody Road” was recorded by The Drifter & The Preacher producer John Raham at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studios. Bentall wrote Cosmic Dreamer’s title track at Yellowpoint Lodge on Vancouver Island in late February 2020 while taking a course at Ladysmith Marine Institute to receive a new certification to continue to drive rigid-hulled inflatable Zodiac boats on Arctic expeditions for a travel company called Adventure Canada. On April 22, 2022, Cosmic Dreamer is available via True North Records.

Ann Hampton Callaway to Headline “Stepping Out” for COD By Madeline Zuckerman After a hiatus caused by the COVID 19 pandemic, the College of the Desert Foundation has announced plans to host its not-tobe-missed “Stepping Out” fundraiser on March 31, 2022, at 7:00 pm on stage at McCallum Theatre. Considered one of the most significant philanthropic events of the year within our Valley, this highlyanticipated performance will feature Tony Nominee Ann Hampton Callaway. Callaway will be performing The Linda Ronstadt Songbook, encompassing Rock & Roll favorites, as we andy standards. This Show celebrates the many faces of love in Ronstadt’s iconic songs from her Stone Pony days, including such hits as “Different Drum” and “Long, Long Time” to pop/rock classics like “You’re No Good” and “Desperado,” along with unforgettable classics from her three Nelson Riddle albums. In addition, the renowned Billy Stritch will join Callaway on stage. Stritch has performed with Tony Bennett Mel Tormé and has had a 25-year collaboration with Liza Minnelli, resulting in the record-breaking extravaganza Liza Stepping Out at Radio City Music Hall. “It makes me feel good to know someone of Ann Hampton Callaway’s caliber is singing these wonderful songs,” said Linda Ronstadt. Callaway has shared the spotlight with great artists from many different genres: George Shearing, Dizzy Gillespie, Stevie Wonder, Dr. John, Liza Minnelli, Betty Buckley, Diana Reeves, Ramsey Lewis, and Michael Feinstein, to name a

few. In addition, she has been an exceptional guest performer with Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops. Throughout her 30 plus-year careers, Callaway has sung with more than 40 of the world’s top orchestras. Following her performance on March 31, Callaway will conduct a special Vocal Masterclass exclusively for COD students on April 1 at 11:00 am at Pollack Theatre. “We are thrilled to have Ann Hampton Callaway headline this important COD Foundation fundraiser, which raises critical funds to benefit College of the Desert Foundation’s Fund For Student Success,” said Matt Durkan, Director of Development for the College Of The Desert Foundation. “Over 70% of students attending COD in March of 2020 lost their sources of income as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. And almost half of the students had their living arrangements disrupted in Spring of 2020. Supporting this year’s “Stepping Out” for COD 2022 is so critical to help these underserved students continue their studies and achieve a college education.” The event is being Cochaired by two of the COD Foundation’s dedicated Board Members, Barbara Foster Monachino and Jane Saltonstall. “Callaway’s enormous fan base is all the more reason the COD Foundation is honored to have such an incredible talent grace the McCallum Theatre stage,” said Foster Monachino. “The community’s support of this event helps

the Foundation meet the most pressing initiatives on campus and enrich academic offerings, ultimately providing our students the opportunity to achieve their educational dreams. Adds Cochair Saltonstall, “Education is essential for one’s personal, social, and professional growth. Yet, for so many in today’s world, acquiring an education is a mere dream. “COD graduates are the backbone of this community.” Tickets range from $75 to $100 per person and can be purchased by calling the McCallum Theatre at 760340-2787 or visiting www. McCallumTheatre.com For more than 60 years, College Of The Desert has made it possible for local students to pursue their academic dreams. In turn, these students become skilled nurses, firefighters, EMTs, chefs, hoteliers, architects, entrepreneurs, and business leaders who give back to our community and generate over $300 million annually to our local economy. Here are some real-life testimonials from COD students who have been impacted and helped financially by the COD Foundation . . . “At a time of extreme need, when I was laid off from my job due to COVID 19, and my savings and my pantry ran dry, I was able to ask the COD Foundation for help. I am forever thankful because the funds that have been granted to me will go a long way,” stated J.P., COD First Year Nursing Student. “During the pandemic, I was not able to work at all, and not having an income was especially hard on me. I March 2, 2022

explained this to my counselor, and he mentioned that COD had the grant to help students during this time. Receiving the grant was a big relief because my bills were stacking up. I do not know where I would be today without the help from the COD Foundation. We were able to have electricity, gas, food, etc., and I am very appreciative and thankful,” stated Rayneisha S., COD Biology Student. “During the pandemic in March of 2020, it was tough because I was already on my own. If the student emergency fund weren’t available, I would have been struggling between my academic and financial lives. The COD Foundation helped me pay for my phone bill for three months because, at that time, I was also moving. When I received the grant, it gave me the help I needed because I was able to focus more on my online Education and less on my financial

situation,” stated Lucky T., COD General Education Student. College Of The Desert is the Coachella Valley’s largest and most respected institution for higher Education, boasting more than 125,000 alumni and contributing over $300 million annually to the local economy. College Of The Desert is a 501c(3) registered nonprofit organization. The mission of the College of the Desert Foundation is to act as advocates for the College and to secure financial support enhancing the educational opportunities for all students.
