By Desert Star Staff Donald Trump’s campaign manager has been arrested and charged with battery for intentionally hurting a journalist at a Florida political event.

Corey Lewandowski grabbed the arm of Michelle Fields, a former Breitbart reporter, police records show.

The altercations at a Trump rally in Jupiter, Florida; on March 8 left Fields with a bruised arm after Lewandowski grabbed her. “Lewandowski grabbed [Michelle] Fields’ left arm with his right hand causing her to turn and step back,” the Jupiter Police Department report said.

Fields showed police her left forearm which “appeared to show a grabbing-type

injury,” according to the investigating officer.

Lewandowski turned himself in just after 8am Tuesday, the Palm Beach Post reported, citing the police report.

Surveillance footage taken at the Trump National Golf Club and released by the police department corroborated Fields’ claim, the arrest report said.

After the incident, Lewandowski had tweeted to Fields that she was “totally delusional” and that not only had he never touched her, he’d never even met her.

Cathedral City ‘LGBT’ Festival

There was an amazing amount of activities planned for this event. Fun days included a costume Charity Bed Race and Equality Balloon Rides.

There was a Battle of the Bars.

This was Easter weekend so many of the activities included an Easter Egg Hunt for the kiddies on the Cathedral City Festival Lawn and an Easter Bonnet Brunch. The Champagne Brunch was hosted by Bella da Ball and featured Coco Peru. Saturday night saw the screening of the iconic film, Sordid Lives. Fans of the movie stood in a long line to get in. The theater holds 400 people and it looked like every seat would be filled. It’s been awhile since the movie

has been shown in the Valley.

The Mary Pickford Theatre in Cathedral City hosted the movie. Guests came in Easter costumes like rabbit ears and one man wore his, I Love Ann Walker, tee shirt in honor of her role in the movie.

Director Del Shores arrived in a Hearse, which is befitting for the script of the movie.

Several cast members arrived to the delight of the entire moviegoers and fans. Ann Walker, Rosemary Alexander, Newell Alexander, and Kirk Geiger arrived and posed for photos with fans. Some fans brought old DVDs of the movie to be autographed. This movie seems to have a special place in the hearts of all of Coachella Valley. It is probably the longest running film shown anywhere as it was shown at the

Opera Season in Palm Springs ‘Domingo and Fleming’

On March 20th, the concert was an extraordinary event featuring opera stars Placido Domingo and Renee Fleming, Maestro Domingo is hailed as the King of Opera during his

many years on the concert stage. The event started with music by the LA Opera Orchestra. What a thrilling sight to see the orchestra filling the stage. Conductor was James Conlon who made the music fill the room.

Renee Fleming came

on stage first and sang. Her beautiful voice thrilled the audience. Placido Domingo came out next and when he sings you don’t need to know the words as his artistry makes the song come to life. Not being a fan of Opera I was astonished at the power of their voices and the way they sing that

brings a special message to each song. They would explain each song before they sang that helped understand the words and story.

The crowd was especially pleased when they sang Some Enchanted Evening together and a medley of songs from West Side story, Maria and How We Danced. They last

performed together back in 1998. Fleming changed her gown and came out to sing Besame Mucho. She said she wore a Spanish dress including a fan just for her song, Morena.

They received standing ovations when they finished.

The guests wanted more but they finished their last duet together and waved goodbye.

The seats were filled in this 2200 seat auditorium, The Show at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa. According to one of the ushers, The Show has been voted Best Venue for the last 7 years.

Domingo had to catch a plane but was gracious enough to do a Meet and Greet after the show before he had to leave.

Guests were given a special treat with an amazing violin solo between songs by the artists that again brought a standing ovation. Everyone commented while leaving that it was a wonderful show.

Mutual Funds can have twelve different expenses before the share price is calculated, which is referred to as Net Asset Value (NAV).

If you own Mutual funds you should review those funds by using the Morningstar reports. Morningstar, Inc. is an investment research and investment management firm for mutual funds. You can obtain use of their monthly reports at your local library. With this report, you can determine change of management, the top ten holdings of the fund, turnover

percentage (buying and selling within the fund), and current returns and how you fund rates among similar funds.

This tax season could turn out to be particularly uncomfortable one for mutual fund investors and their advisors. Despite losses or small gains in most major markets last year, many mutual funds distributed capital gains to investors who, in turn, have to pay taxes on those gains even though they made little or no profit on those investments and may even have incurred losses.

This “double whammy” is even more pronounced if the fund distributions were shortterm capital gains, which are taxed at an investor’s income tax rate rather than the lower long-term capital gains of 15% or 20% for many investors, depending on their tax rate.

(the average distribution was 9.7%, in 2015. That would cost an investor in the top tax bracket slightly more than $2,300, turning a $500 gain into an $1800 loss.

be present, and it could humiliate the other member and escalate the possibility of hostility. This is not a court hearing, and the accused does not have the right to cross-examine witnesses or argue with their accuser. This is an informal proceeding between neighbors.

8. Do not interrupt members while presenting their side of the issue. Let them explain their position, and avoid using their time by arguing or discussing the issue. After the member is finished, that is the time for any questions from the board.

9. Do not deliberate in front of the member. Excuse the member, explaining that the board will now discuss the subject, and will in writing inform the member of the decision within fifteen days.

10. Do not allow the member to speak through surrogates, tenants, or attorneys. This is an informal neighbor to neighbor event.

11. Adopt rules regarding disciplinary and reimbursement hearings. Members should know how the process works.

12. Be reasonable neighborly conduct is the goal, and the board should also be reasonable as it consistently enforces the governing documents.

Unmet demand for after-school programs is high in rural communities

By Desert Star Staff As many families in rural communities struggle for economic security, experts say that the afterschool programs that keep students safe and inspire them to learn are in short supply.

A recently released report, “The Growing Importance of Afterschool in Rural Communities,” finds that just 13 percent of rural students in the U.S. participate in an afterschool program. While this number is up from 2009, it’s still considerably below the 18 percent nationwide rate.

According to America After 3PM, a household survey commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness and advocacy organization, for every rural child in an afterschool program, the parents of three more say their child would be enrolled if a program were available.

That amounts to 3.1 million children. Unmet demand is especially high among Hispanic, African-American and low-income rural families.

“Many rural communities nationwide are characterized by strong social ties,” says Jodi Grant, executive director of the Afterschool Alliance.

“But poverty, food insecurity and low education levels

persist in rural communities.

Indeed, in 2014, one in four rural children was living in poverty. Quality afterschool programs are a valuable gateway to a successful future, and it should be a high priority for leaders to meet the need in rural America.”

The new report, underwritten by John Deere, finds that: • One in five rural students is unsupervised after school.

• More than four in five rural parents support public funding for afterschool programs.

• Rural enrollment in summer learning programs is on the rise, yet there’s significant unmet demand.

• Both participation and unmet demand in afterschool programs are lower among children in white and higher-income rural families than African-American and Hispanic families.

• An overwhelming majority of rural parents report they are satisfied with their child’s afterschool program overall.

• An appreciably higher percentage of urban parents report their child’s afterschool program offers STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning opportunities than rural parents.

• Nearly three in four rural parents agree that afterschool programs should provide nutritious foods and 61 percent say they do so; 73 percent of rural parents agree that afterschool programs keep kids physically active.

In an accompanying online survey, rural afterschool program providers reported that the top challenge they face is raising funds to sustain their afterschool programs.

• Increase national attention to the essential role afterschool programs play.

A faulty cell phone charger is being blamed as the cause of the fire.

The incident happened at an AM/PM gas station near Cook Street and Gerald Ford around 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

Quick action by the driver, Kavin Rubarth, may have been the only thing that prevented something worse from happening.

Rubarth said he was gassing up when his cellphone charger caught fire.

He was able to get his wife and child out of the truck and quickly moved the car 30 feet from the pumps to avoid a potential catastrophe.

Democrats Call for Investigation After AZ Primary “Debacle”

By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX - Some angry Arizona voters are calling for a federal investigation into possible voter suppression in last week’s Arizona presidential primary, after it took some Phoenix-area voters up to five hours to cast their ballots.

Maricopa County elections officials said they cut the number of polling places from 200 to 60 as a costsaving measure, which led to long lines and caused many potential voters to give up.

Ruben Gallego, a Democrat representing Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, says the people responsible for the long lines need to be held accountable.

“At this point, if it was by chance or by planning, no matter what, there’s nothing that we can deny; that voter suppression

happened.” says Gallego.

Arizona Democrats held a news conference to blame Republicans for the problem, charging that election officials deliberately set up fewer polling places to discourage voters in low-income and minority neighborhoods.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, also a Democrat, wants the federal Department of Justice to investigate.

Some Republican officials, including Gov. Doug Ducey, are calling for election changes but deny deliberately suppressing votes.

Steve Gallardo, the lone Democrat on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, says when that body approved the primary election plan back in February, it was clear to him there were going to be problems.

The tiny Panoche Valley is one of three federal recovery areas for Central Valley wildlife, and this solar project would cover half of the valley floor.

The project still needs a Clean Water Act permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a federal Endangered Species Act permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which will be issuing the final biological opinion.

Sarah Friedman, senior campaign representative for the Sierra Club, says the group may seek additional legal action to stop construction before it begins.

“We just need to do whatever it takes to protect these species,” says Friedman.

“The remaining habitat they have has been developed for energy, for oil and gas, for solar, for housing. They have nowhere left to go and if we don’t save this habitat they could really be pushed to the edge.”

The project is co-owned

by Renewable Energy Trust Capital and ConEd Development, a subsidiary of the New York-based utility.

The companies say the project will contain 1.1 million solar panels and will contribute clean energy to the grid.

The environmental groups say they support solar, but would like to see it moved to a less-sensitive location.

FBI using Israeli firm to crack San Bernardino iPhone without Apple

By Desert Star Staff Cellebrite, an Israeli mobile forensic software company, is aiding the Federal Bureau of Investigation in its quest to unlock the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters, Israeli media reported.

The FBI has been contracting with Cellebrite to break through a locked iPhone, “according to experts in the field familiar with the case,” according to Ynet, online outlet of the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronot.

This would be a step in a much different direction in the FBI’s ongoing battle with Apple over the device belonging to Syed Farook, one of the perpetrators of December’s massacre in San Bernardino, California, that left 14 people dead.

Cellebrite, considered a global leader in the field of digital forensics, hasn’t officially commented on

their involvement with the FBI. However, The Verge reported the company has had a sole-source contract with the Bureau since the 2013, specifically to help with data extraction – the very task at hand in the San Bernardino case.

The FBI initially attempted to force Apple to crack the iPhone via an ongoing court battle, one which the company’s CEO Tim Cook said he was willing to carry all the way to Supreme Court, to defend the privacy of its customers.

Just as the two parties were scheduled to go to court on Tuesday, a federal judge agreed to the FBI’s request to postpone the hearing, after prosecutors announced that an unnamed “nongovernmental third party” had presented a potential way to crack Apple’s flagship product without the company’s help.

If the third party successfully bypasses the iPhone’s security features, it could have business implications for Apple that go beyond this particular case.

Other tech giants – and as of this month, the Department of Defense – routinely set

bounties for identifying and fixing exploitable flaws for outside hackers to claim.

Facebook paid out almost $1 million total in such bounties to independent researchers who found bugs in 2015, and Google paid hackers $6 million in 2010.

Apple, however, doesn’t engage in this industrystandard practice, and hackers have turned to underground markets to sell knowledge of flaws in the company’s software that not even the company itself has, and this could be why the FBI is able to turn to third parties.

The showdown between Apple and the federal government has spilled over from the realm of the courts and technology, finding itself under the scrutiny of lawmakers. Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-California) and Richard Burr (R-North Carolina) have been working since the Paris terror attacks in November, followed quickly by the one in San Bernardino, on an encryption bill that could be introduced to the Senate any day, reported The Hill.

Feinstein and Burr argue that it is currently too easy for criminals and terrorists to

“go dark,” and the new bill would force companies like Apple to comply with court orders that seek access to encrypted communications.

“The going-dark issue has been gathering momentum (in Congress) like a train coming down the tracks, but it still seemed for a while like it was going to be a long time before it got to the station,” said Representative Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, according to Reuters. “But it arrived with a fury with this lawsuit.”

Proposing a 50% increase

on top of that is reckless and ignores serious negative consequences including job loss and increased costs to job creators, senior citizens, and non-profits,” said NFIB/ CA State Executive Director Tom Scott. “It is no surprise that CEO Magazine has consistently ranked California dead last for its business climate; raising the minimum wage to the highest in the nation is the last thing Sacramento should do to job creators in this state.”

Tom Scott added, “It is especially troubling that this minimum wage deal was crafted behind closed doors with no public input or transparency. It is clear Sacramento is broken when sweeping proposals such as this are crafted in the dark and quickly moved through the Legislature, ignoring the voice of our 22,000 small business members and others.”

says De La Fuente could make a difference in states where the general election is a squeaker.

“And if he’s able to parlay some of those financial successes into being taken seriously as a candidate, then it is conceivable that his spoiler will be important in a couple of states,” says Ingram. “If you do end up having a really closely-fought election.”

Ingram says history shows independent candidates are often passionate about their issues and manage to get them onto the national radar, regardless of whether they garner enough votes to win.

About 40 workers from Taylor Farms, which is based in Tracy, picketed at Chipotle restaurants in Manteca and Sacramento.

Taylor Farms supplies tomatoes and other cut vegetables to Chipotle, as well as to many grocery chains around the nation.

Bloch says the Teamsters Union represents 2,500 workers at the Taylor Farms plant in Salinas, and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see the same problems there.

He adds the union has been trying to organize 900 workers at the Taylor Farmsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; location in Tracy for the past two years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In 2012, 20 workers were hospitalized after a chemical spill,â&#x20AC;? says Bloch. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Last year, the same accident happened and in the meantime, California OSHA has cited the company for almost 50 different violations of California law.â&#x20AC;?

FILM Make Room for ‘Room’ on DVD

If you were not able to catch the eight nominated films for this year’s Academy Award, fear not because they are now available on Blu-ray and DVD. “Room,” from Lionsgate, did not take home the gold for Best Picture, but lead actress Brie Larson won an Oscar for her stellar leading performance as Ma in the film. Young Jacob Tremblay, who played her 5-year-old son Jack, was not nominated, but he too turned in an Oscar worthy performance.

The film, based on the best selling novel by Emma Donoghue, is the heartwrenching story of a young woman and her 5-year-old

son, who was born in captivity after she was abducted seven years earlier. His mother’s love and the shed they call “room” is the only life the young boy has ever known.

What he observes about the real world comes only from watching the small TV set in their tiny, confining “room.”

The film, like Donoghue’s novel, is divided into two segments--the mother son relationship in captivity and their life after they discover a way to escape. While the young mother has suffered as a prisoner, she has been able to cope and survive by taking care of her little boy.

In the second segment of the story, we meet her family. The kidnapping has been devastating for them as well. But being reunited after seven long years is not easy for any of them. Freedom is a wonderful thing, but it is difficult to adjust to after seven years in confinement. Readjusting to the real world is particularly difficult for the young woman who is now psychologically disturbed and damaged. This terrible incident has also taken a toll on the family she left behind. Bill Macy and Joan Allen play her parents and Sean Bridgers (HBO’s “Deadwood”) is the man who abducted her.

Melissa Rauch & Haley Lu Richardson Discuss Their Latest Film

Melissa Rauch is an east coast native who began her career doing stand-up. She did a one-woman show playing Jenna Bush in “The Education of Jenna Bush” and later segued into television where she had a recurring role on “The Big Bang Theory” as well as guest appearances on “The Housewives of Orlando” and “True Blood.”

Her latest film is “The Bronze,” written by Melissa and her husband Winston Rauch.

The story revolves around a former Olympic gymnast who competed with a ruptured Achilles heel, winning a Bronze medal for the U.S. Olympic Gymnastic team, and her subsequent unfulfilling life.

Haley Lu Richardson, who plays the fledgling gymnast, began her career as a dancer.

Subsequently, she made guest appearance on several television programs including the long-running series - “Law & Order.” The rest of the cast includes Gary Cole, Thomas Middleditch, Sebastian Stan, and Cecily Strong.

Rauch and Richardson recently sat down with a select group of journalists to discuss their latest film and the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.

Do you feel by writing this with your husband that it was a way of taking charge of your career?

Melissa: I love writing so there’s writing for the love of writing and getting the story out there. When Winston and I are writing, we have our writing hats on. I like taking control and not waiting on the industry. I’m not getting the roles in films that I want. I think writing is a great way to write yourself out of the box.

There were people interested

in the script but wanted to cast someone else in the role of Hope. So, we held onto it and decided to do it ourselves on a shoestring budget. Ownership was important to us.

It took a while to get the movie out there. How did it finally happen?

Melissa: We screened at Sundance and eventually Sony Pictures Classics pick up the distribution rights.

What we see onscreen is a foul-mouthed, spoiled, very unlikeable brat. As the actress/writer, how would you describe Hope?

Melissa: Playing her made me realize that she’s all talk on the outside and that under layers and layers of muck is her sweetness, but you have to chip away at it. She’s just doesn’t like herself very much. We could have made her a bit more likeable but decided not to.

Besides the USA Team warm-up suit, how important were her bangs to the character?

Melissa: She had those bangs way past the time it was socially acceptable and those bangs are where she holds her pride. She doesn’t really know how to properly express herself, so she plays with her bangs.

Haley: I skipped over my lines and didn’t know what I was saying, so I had to stop.

Melissa: When she finally did it, it was perfect and when she left the room, we all said, “That’s our Maggie.”

Did you base your character on someone and how did you train for your gymnastic scenes?

Haley: I’m obsessed with Shawn Johnson.* I’ve always been obsessed with gymnastics. It’s my favorite sport in the Olympics. Haley: Maggie considered everything Hope said as gold coming out of her mouth.

What advice would you give to people who want to get into the television or film business?

Melissa: If they want to go into the film or TV business, if there’s any part of you that likes to write, you should try to create your own stuff.

Most people in this business love it. It’s their passion as well as a job. So, there’s a sadness that comes along with it when you’re not given the opportunity to work.

What was it like having to eat all that junk food?

Melissa: It was sitting around and eating cold French fries. Actually, people had set up lawn chairs to watch us.

During the shoot, did you make any script changes?

Melissa: Yes. There were some long days – shooting 14 or 15 hours. A lot of times we didn’t have money to shoot at certain locations, so we would go home and do a rewrite of a particular scene. Some of the obstacles you face end up informing your creative decisions.

5 deadly terror attacks that failed to grab world’s attention

However, while millions in the West took to social media to share their grief, there are numerous attacks across the world that go largely unreported in the mainstream media.

NIGERIA – Over 80 killed, children burned to death On January 30, Boko Haram terrorists killed 86 people after they attacked a village in northeast Nigeria. The assault took place on the outskirts of the city of Maiduguri, which is the birthplace of the Islamist militant group.

Citing an eyewitness who managed to survive the attack, AP reported that Boko Haram extremists firebombed huts. The survivor said that he had heard the screams of children burning to death from a hiding place in a tree.

attacks in Africa, and especially in Nigeria,” Max Abrahms, assistant professor of political science at Northeastern University in Boston, told RT. “I think many people would be surprised to know how much killing power the main terrorist group Boko Haram has,” he said, adding that if such attacks were carried out against people in European or North American countries, “there would be much more media coverage.”

IRAQ – 29 dead after ISIS suicide bomber strikes football match Iraq is doing its best to try and return to some semblance of normality following the violence that Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) has brought to parts of the country.

However, on Friday, three days after the Brussels attacks, at least 29 people were killed at a football match south of the capital, Baghdad.

“They were just handing the trophy to the winners, the suicide attacker blew

himself up in the crowd,” AlAsriya, a police captain from the village, told AFP. The match was taking place at a small stadium in the town of Iskanderiyah located 50 kilometers south of Baghdad.

Earlier in March, an IS attack killed 60 people when a truck rigged with explosives slammed into a security checkpoint near the southern Iraqi city of Hilla, according to Reuters.

PAKISTAN – Easter suicide bomb kills 70 Taliban faction Jamaatul-Ahrar claimed responsibility for Sunday’s suicide blast outside a public park in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore that killed at least 70 people and injured more than 280, many of whom were women and children.

“The targets were Christians,” Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for the faction, said, threatening that more attacks in the region would follow.

This was Pakistan’s

deadliest attack since the December 2014 massacre of 134 school children at a military-run academy in the city of Peshawar that prompted a large-scale government crackdown on Islamist militants.

SYRIA – ISIS massacres dozens in morning rush hour On February 21, a series of explosions rocked a district of the Syrian capital, Damascus, killing at least 83 people. Two suicide bombers, who were linked to Islamic State, carried out the attack.

The first explosion was a car bomb that targeted a busy school street in the Sayeda Zeinab district during rush hour. The blast was followed by two explosions allegedly carried out by suicide bombers wearing explosive belts, and targeted the crowds gathered at the site of the tragedy.

The attacks claimed the lives of at least 83 people, according to local media, while at least 178 were injured,

many of them severely.

LEBANON – ISIS strike Shiite stronghold a day before Paris attacks A day before the Paris attacks, two suicide bombers struck in the Lebanese capital of Beruit, killing at least 43 people, with a further 240 people injured. Islamic State claimed responsibility, with members of the militant group blowing up a motorbike with explosives in the middle of a street.

The first blast took place outside a Shiite Mosque, while a second blast, also in the early evening, occurred near a bakery. A second bomb reportedly went off seven minutes later as passers-by tried to help those injured in the initial blast.

A potential third attacker was killed before he managed to blow himself up. He was found dead with his legs torn off but still wearing an explosives’ belt, a Lebanese security official reported, according to AP.

IRS Alerts Payroll and HR Professionals to Phishing Scheme

By Desert Star Staff IRS Criminal Investigation is issuing an alert today to payroll and human resources professionals to beware of an emerging phishing email scheme that purports to be from company executives and requests personal information on employees.

The IRS has learned this scheme – part of the surge in phishing emails seen this year – already has claimed several victims as payroll and human resources offices mistakenly email payroll data including Forms W-2 that contain Social Security numbers and other personally identifiable information to cybercriminals posing as company executives.

“This is a new twist on an old scheme using the cover of the tax season and W-2 filings to try tricking people into sharing personal data.

Now the criminals are focusing their schemes on company payroll departments,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.

“If your CEO appears to be emailing you for a list of company employees, check it out before you respond.

Everyone has a responsibility to remain diligent about confirming the identity of people requesting personal information about employees.”

IRS Criminal Investigation already is reviewing several cases in which people have been tricked into sharing SSNs with what turned out to be cybercriminals.

Criminals using personal information stolen elsewhere

seek to monetize data, including by filing fraudulent tax returns for refunds.

This phishing variation is known as a “spoofing” email.

It will contain, for example, the actual name of the company chief executive officer. In this variation, the “CEO” sends an email to a company payroll office employee and requests a list of employees and information including SSNs. The IRS recently renewed a wider consumer alert for e-mail schemes after seeing an approximate 400 percent surge in phishing and malware incidents so far this tax season and other reports of scams targeting others in a wider tax community.

The emails are designed

to trick taxpayers into thinking these are official communications from the IRS or others in the tax industry, including tax software companies. The phishing schemes can ask taxpayers about a wide range of topics.

E-mails can seek information related to refunds, filing status, confirming personal information, ordering transcripts and verifying PIN information.

By KMIR News Staff BANNING, Ca. -A preliminary hearing is scheduled Monday for a convicted felon accused of killing two people and wounding three during an unexplained hour-long rampage in the Banning Pass.

James Paul Diaz, 34, of Hemet was arrested last Sept. 26 following attacks in Banning and Beaumont.

Diaz is charged with two counts each of first-degree murder, attempted murder and child endangerment and three counts of assault with a firearm.

A special circumstance allegation of taking multiple lives in the same crime could make him eligible for the death penalty if he’s convicted and the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office elects to pursue capital punishment.

Monday’s hearing at the Banning Justice Center will determine whether there’s sufficient evidence to warrant a trial for Diaz, who is being held without bail at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside.

According to investigators, the rampage began about 11:30 in the morning in the

700 block of East John Street in Banning, where the defendant allegedly opened fire with a shotgun, striking two men sitting in a vehicle.’

One of the victims, 66-yearold Paul Lesh, was dead by the time officers arrived to investigate the shots-fired call. His friend, whose identity was withheld, suffered minor wounds, according to police.

Witnesses described the shooter’s vehicle as a white SUV. Banning police Chief Alex Diaz -- no relation to the defendant -- said that a little under 15 minutes later, there was another vehicleto-vehicle shooting near the intersection of San Gorgonio Avenue and Nicolet Street.

The victim, whose identity was not disclosed, told police that a man in a white SUV had fired a shotgun through his windshield, shattering it and leaving him cut by the broken glass.

The man was treated for minor injuries and recovered.

Ten minutes later, Banning police officers responded to a report of an assault with a

deadly weapon at a gas station near 22nd and Ramsey streets.

The victim told officers he was inside his parked vehicle when an unknown assailant stepped alongside, began throwing punches, and struck him with an object.

The man was not seriously injured. Again, the suspect was said to have fled in a white SUV, according to police.

At 12:13 p.m., Banning police were called to the 200 block of East Lincoln Street, where a vehicle had crashed into a wall outside a city vehicle yard.

Officers found 34-yearold Benjamin Johnson shot to death inside the vehicle.

Witnesses reported an SUV racing away from the location, and Beaumont police, sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers were alerted.

About 12:20 p.m., Beaumont police officers received a call that a man fitting the defendant’s description was knocking on doors in the 700 block of American Street, trying to get residents to open up.

in her car, getting ready to leave her house in the 1300 block of Eighth Street with her two young children, when Diaz allegedly ripped off a door handle and banged furiously on the car. ``I could tell that he was manic and crazy,’’ Ruehle said later. ``He told me that his kids were in the car and that I had his kids. And I had no idea who he was. I had never met him before.’’ Ruehle and her children were not injured.

Diaz was arrested without incident, and a shotgun was seized from his SUV, investigators said.

Coyote Stageworks back on stage at Annenberg with “Art”

By Jack Lyons Who would have thought that a ‘white canvas painting’ three feet by four feet without a frame, could wreak such comedy havoc between three old friends?

That in a nutshell is the gist of the story of the blisteringly funny comedy ‘ART’, written

by Iranian-born, but Frenchraised, Tony Award winningplaywright Yasmina Reza.

English playwright Christopher Hampton (who works on all of Reza’s plays) provides ‘ART’, with not only a witty, and insightful translation, he delivers a script chock full of biting dialogue for the sensational trio of gifted actors: Chuck Yates (Marc), Larry Raben (Serge), and David Engle (Ivan) spin his words into theatrical gold under the deft direction of Don Amendolia.

‘ART’ is a story that crosses generational lines, international borders and multi-cultures, that resonates with people everywhere because we have all seen our friends and relatives in situations the three characters find themselves in, despite the fact that it’s set in Paris.

The play is not just about a painting; it’s about how we react when our friends’ secret agendas bubble up from their subconscious when they’re innocently asked for an opinion. The meat of the play unfolds in the interaction of these three friends and is a favorite device

in many of Reza’s plays like ‘God of Carnage’, another of her Tony-winning plays.

In ‘ART’, Serge, a divorced, successful dermatologist and a culturedriven art collector, has purchased a painting for $50,000 dollars and can’t wait to share his purchase with Marc his best friend of fifteen years. Marc has always fancied himself as Serge’s mentor in all things cultural. In the past, Serge usually consulted with Marc before making a purchase; this time, he didn’t. He made a spur-of-the-momentdecision and now is eager to get Marc’s approval.

Marc can best be described as an analretentive, irritating nitpicker who has a gift for always being right and enjoys the rough and tumble of these spirited exchanges with Serge and Ivan, or anyone else who will listen to him spout-off.

When he and Serge discuss the painting, Marc is appalled, not only at the priced Serge paid for it, but he disses the painting as utter crap, forcing Serge to defend his purchase.

The result is both men agree, after verbally fencing and insulting one another, to see what Ivan thinks of it.

Ivan is not the cultural or monetary equal of Serge or Marc. He is a middleclass working type who has just begun a job in a stationery store owned by his future father-in-law.

The three despite their backgrounds, however, are compatible best friends.

Photo by David A. Lee The beauty of this stellar production lies in the performances of its three extremely talented actors and the deliciously incendiary dialogue of playwright Reza.

Just when one thinks that all the one-upmanship lines each actor hurls to the other, that the final salvo has been fired, another round of sparkling, zinger-laden put-downs begins all over again. I’ve seen four professional productions of ‘ART’ over the years and I wouldn’t exchange this trio for any who have performed

Reza’s lacerating comedy of male friendship and honesty.

Director Amendolia keeps the pace crackling and wisely allows his three stars to flesh out and mine every comedy nugget to the fullest. It’s a terrifically entertaining comedy production that also affords the audience time to absorb what is taking place on stage, and to reflect upon its deeper and more sobering meanings.

and a tricky lighting design

by Moira Wilkie (who just created the lighting design for CV REP’s ‘I Am My Own Wife’ which I saw last week), required to see the costumes designed by Bonnie Nipar.

This splendid production should not be missed by Coachella Valley audiences.
