Homes of all sizes built for deserving vets KMIR News Staff Indio, CA - Local nonprofit Habitat For Humanity stepped up it’s efforts to build homes for veterans and their families today in Indio. Some big and some small. Habitat For Humanity and hundreds of volunteers from Home Depot were out in full force to make some big and miniature home upgrades. On the receiving end were veterans and their families. “They had like two hundred plus volunteers come from all around the United States. So it was really cool to see people that really care about the CoachellaValley and us veterans our residence,” said Navy veteran Rudy Gutierrez. When it comes to the
larger homes on the block, Habitat For Humanity had one goal in mind. By our coming together with building these homes and providing other supplies to veterans and working in our community and helping veterans and help beautify their neighborhoods and their homes, it’s just a marvelous way we can say thank you to them,” said Dave Thornton, executive director of Habitat For Humanity. The smaller homes were built for smaller inhabitants. Each one will be delivered to deserving vets and their families. The younger crowd being just as

Mystery surrounds a car accident in California which investigators believe claimed the lives of viral protester Devonte Hart and his entire immediate family. It’s thought that Devonte Hart was a passenger in the vehicle which was found at the bottom of coastal cliffs in Mendocino County, California. The crashed car was spotted upside down by a passerby on Monday, but police say they’re still unsure when or how the vehicle plunged 75 feet into the Pacific Ocean. Photos of Devonte Hart, 15, went viral during a 2014 police brutality protest in Portland, Oregon. The images showed the boy hugging a Portland cop during a support rally for Michael Brown, who was shot dead by police in Ferguson, Missouri. Devonte and two others are currently missing, presumed dead. Allman confirmed that Devonte’s parents - Jennifer and Sarah
Hart - were killed in the crash along with children Marcus, Jeremiah and Abigail. “There was no skid marks, no brake marks, there was no indication of why this vehicle traversed approximately over 75 feet into the Pacific Ocean,” he added. “We have no reason to believe that this was an intentional act.” Allman admitted a number of unknowns exist at this stage of the investigation, but added that investigators believe that a whole family perished in the mysterious crash. “We know that an entire family vanished,” Allman said. “When I say the entire family, we have every indication to believe that all six children were in there. However, only three bodies have been recovered. Devonte, we believe was in the vehicle. However, we have not recovered his body and two others.” Police are now appealing for information about the movements of the family in the hours leading up to the incident.

By Desert Star Staff FRANKFORT, Ky. - A Kentucky lawmaker is hopeful that a bill that would help improve outcomes for women in prison soon will be approved by the House. Sen. Julie Raque Adams, R-Louisville, co-sponsored Senate Bill 133, which she said would address unfavorable conditions for women in prison, including access to basic health and hygiene services. The state’s correctional facilities were originally built for men, she said, and are ill-equipped to handle the recent rise in the female population. “Our female prison population is struggling to get the personal items they need, feminine-hygiene products, and there’s even a lot of problems with them having undergarments that are appropriate,” she said. “And in Kentucky, we still shackle women while they’re giving birth.”
Adams said one in four women entering the prison population either has an infant or is pregnant, and some are struggling with drug addiction. SB 133, which she called the “Dignity Bill,” also would allow pregnant women in prison to enter drug treatment to help them deliver a healthy baby, and end the practice of shackling pregnant women during labor. Jennifer Hancock, president of Volunteers of America Mid-States in Louisville, which provides addiction services for mothers and pregnant women, predicted that the bill would promote quicker access to treatment services for women who otherwise may spend their pregnancy behind bars. She contended that it’s needed now more than ever. “Some of the drugs of the past, still highly addictive, but women were able to more successfully remain abstinent
during their pregnancies,” she said, “and that game has changed in the face of the opioid crisis.” Some opponents have said allowing pregnant women to be released from jail for drug treatment could be problematic, opening a window
for drug crimes. However, Adams argued that it will help break the cycle of addiction in families, and thus is a good return on investment. “Delivering a baby that has been stepped down and is not a neonatal abstinence syndrome baby, that saves the
state hundreds of thousands of dollars,” she said. “And so, not only is this the right thing to do, it saves taxpayer money.” SB 133 passed the Senate earlier this month and recently was sent to the House Rules Committee. Details of the bill are online at lrc.ky.gov.
By Desert Star Staff HARTFORD, Conn. – After a woman gave birth in her Connecticut prison cell, civil rights advocates want legislation to ensure respect for incarcerated women’s health, dignity and human rights. The delivery happened last month without medical assistance in the York Correctional Institution in Niantic. According to Sandy LoMonico, Smart Justice organizer at the ACLU of
Connecticut, Senate Bill 13 would prohibit the shackling of women during childbirth, ensure services and support during and after pregnancy and delivery, and allow frequent visitation with children. “It’s important to treat all women, no matter where they are, with dignity and respect,” she says. “If we don’t do that, it impacts the health of not only women who are incarcerated but their children and their families as well.” The bill, called An Act
Concerning Fair Treatment of Incarcerated Women, has four sponsors and eleven co-sponsors in the General Assembly. LoMonico says the bill would also give incarcerated mothers and their children access to child-friendly visitation areas away from the noise and confrontations that can take place in adult visiting rooms. “Children of incarcerated mothers sense what their moms go through and
they suffer as well, and we can do better,” she explains. “We can stop the cycle of trauma and begin supporting the healing that is necessary for incarcerated women and families.” While some provisions of
the bill are now covered by policies within the Department of Corrections, LoMonico notes that putting them in legislation would ensure that the rights of incarcerated women are guaranteed by state law.

Civil Rights Leaders Condemn Citizenship Question on Census
By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, D.C. – Civil rights leaders are slamming a Trump administration decision to put a citizenship question on the 2020 Census survey for the first time since the 1950s. U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross defends the move, saying the data is necessary to enforce the Voting Rights Act. But, Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, says the question could cause a serious under-count of immigrants and calls it a poison for democracy. “The civil rights community is speaking with a clearly united voice,” she says. “This decision is wrong for our country, it’s wrong for our

communities, and it’s wrong for our democracy. And we will fight to overturn it.” The fear is that people who are citizens but may have undocumented members of their household will see that question and decline to participate in the census. The survey takes place every ten years and is used to lay out congressional districts and divvy up federal funds for crucial services like public safety, health care, transportation and education. On Tuesday, California’s Attorney General Xavier Becerra sued the administration, saying the Constitution requires a count of all persons, not just citizens. Arturo Vargas, executive director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Education Fund says the Commerce Secretary has not subjected this question to any of the customary, rigorous tests and focus groups designed to make sure adding it will do no harm. “The stakes are too high
for a failed 2020 Census, and we will not sit idly by as those with malice intention seek to thwart a fair and accurate count of immigrants, of Latinos and of all Americans,” he warns. John Yang with the group Asian Americans Advancing Justice says the administration’s antiimmigrant policies - from the
Muslim ban to the elimination of DACA protections have created a climate of fear and distrust of the government, which could be exacerbated with a citizenship question on the census. “This question and similar policies by this administration will leave minority communities under-counted, under-
represented and underprotected,” he says. Statistics show most of the nation’s immigrants cluster in 20 American cities, mostly in blue states that did not support President Trump in the last election. Meanwhile, the President’s reelection campaign recently sent a fundraising email signaling this decision.
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – While much of the country has been focused on Trump administration scandals, a new report shows Congress has been busy doing Wall Street’s bidding. Since last year, according to the sixth annual report by the group Americans for Financial Reform, the House Financial Services Committee has passed more than six dozen bills to loosen restrictions on the financial industry – with the support of virtually all Republicans and an occasional Democrat. Report coauthor James Lardner, a senior fellow
at the group, cited one bill signed by President Donald Trump in October that allows companies to force consumers who allege fraud into arbitration - and keeping them from filing a class-action lawsuit. “The result is that, if you’re cheated by your credit card company or your student lender, or what have you,” Lardner said, they’re perfectly entitled to say you’re not allowed to go to court, and you’re not allowed to band together with other people who’ve been cheated in the same way.” Lardner said the secrecy of mandatory arbitration
allowed Wells Fargo to get away with creating fake accounts for four years. He added that the tax bill greatly benefited Wall Street. The report found all but one of California’s 14 GOP representatives voted for 17 out of 19 anti-consumer bills supported by the financial industry. Wall Street has argued for years that Obamaera banking regulations went too far and restrict the availability of credit. Recently, the Senate passed Senate Bill 2115, a big financial deregulation package – one that Lardner said takes the heat off many large banks that were part
of the crash of 2008. “And it excuses banks with between $50 billion and $250 billion in assets from some of the sort of automatic scrutiny that big banks were supposed to get after the financial crisis,” he said, “to make sure they didn’t engage in dangerous, risky practices.” Polls show most voters support more regulation for Wall Street. Nonetheless, the deregulation bill will now go to the U.S. House, where hardline conservatives have said it doesn’t go far enough to lighten the load on banks. The report is online at ourfinancialsecurity.org.

Inner City Youth Orchestra commemorates the life of MLK Jr.
Photos by Greg Moore By Desert Star Staff On Wednesday, April 4, 2018, the Inner-City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA) will present a concert to commemorate the life and contribution of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles County Center. The free show takes place on the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination. The evening will feature a prelude to the actual concert when a symbolic shot at the exact time that Dr. King was shot followed by a period of reflective music performed from 6:01 p.m. until 7:05 p.m. when he was pronounced dead. A
formal program will then follow featuring the orchestra and a chorus of 150 to 200 performing “I Have A Dream,” composed by conductor Charles Dickerson (a choral/orchestral setting of Dr. King’s epic speech) along with other performances, speakers and video clips over the course of the evening. The performance will feature the West Coast premiere of the orchestrated setting of The Seven Last Words of the Unarmed by Joel Thompson. The music marks the final words of seven African American men who were unarmed and killed by police and other aggressors in recent history.
Founder, Executive Director Charles Dickerson whose love of music and community inspired him to establish ICYOLA in the summer of 2009 when asked by nine African American high school instrumentalists to work with them. Two years later after numerous concert performances and an invitation to perform in Washington D. C., they knew that it was time to become a formal organization. So they established their mission, to provide the musical education and opportunity for young, urbane youth who otherwise would not have the occasion to express themselves
through music. The orchestra does not require auditions or tuition only the desire and commitment to do the work. Mr. Dickerson says, “The April 4, concert is significant as a benchmark extending ICYOLA’s mission because it uses musical expression to teach invaluable life lessons tied to the values of Dr. King while providing an opportunity for the orchestra to learn great music included in the orchestra’s repertoire, and to perform music before the diverse Los Angeles community.” The Remembrance Concert honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, the 50th Anniversary of his Assassination will be performed by the Inner-City Youth of Los Angeles in association with the L. A. Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion located at 1135 N. Grand Ave, Los Angeles CA, 90012. Doors will open at 5 pm. Oscar Winner “Shape of Water” Now On DVD Guillermo del Toro’s imaginative, romantic sci-fi fantasy “The Shape of Water” entered this year’s Oscar race with 14 nominations and walked away with four golden statuettes: an Oscar for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Production Design and Best Original Score. Set in Baltimore in the early 1960’s, the storyline for “The Shape of Water” focuses on a young, mute woman. Elisa Esposito (Sally Hawkins, “Blue Jasmine,” “Happy Go Lucky”) who works as a cleaning lady in a government facility and a creature from the Amazon that is half man, half fish (Doug Jones). The Aquaman, found by an American team of scientists headed by Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon), was captured and brought to America for future research. In the Amazon, it was considered a god, but to Strickland “it” is only a creature to be studied and then destroyed. As a small boy, Del Toro was fascinated by the 1954 film “Creature From the Black
Lagoon” and wondered, even at that young age, why the creature never got the girl. With his award-winning feature “The Shape of Water” the creature finally gets his chance. However, Del Toro’s highly imaginative fairy-fish-tale, cowritten by “Game of Thrones” producer Vanessa Taylor, has lots more on its mind. Not only does it focus on an unusual love story, but it also takes a look at American life in the early 1960s, a time when many people were doing very well financially, and many others were not. As Charles Dickens might say, “It was the best of times and the worst of times,” depending on your social status. For example, Elisa’s neighbor, Giles (Richard Jenkins), is a commercial artist who is having a tough time finding work because photographs are rapidly replacing art in advertising. Giles keeps painting, hoping his circumstances will change. But will they? In the evenings he and Elisa watch old movies on TV. Both are big
movie fans, and their adjoining apartments are situated over the little movie theater below. At work, Elisa has another very close friend, Zelda Fuller (Octavia Spencer). They sweep and clean together, and Zelda is very protective of her speechless co-worker. When Aquaman is placed in a particular section of the facility, no one seems to
notice that Elisa often comes in and eats her lunch with him. She soon befriends him and teaches him to sign language. He is a quick study. She is horrified when she learns that Strickland plans to kill and dissect this sensitive, intelligent creature. At this point, she is willing to do anything in her power to save him. But what can she do?
“The Shape of Water” may not be for everyone, but for those who enjoy science fiction blended with romance, this is a thoughtful, unique piece of storytelling. “The Shape of Water” is rated R for sexual content, graphic nudity, violence, and language. Running time: 2 hours, 3 minutes.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. New Abortion Rules, Lawsuits May Follow By Desert Star Staff INDIANAPOLIS – An abortion law that goes into effect in Indiana this summer isn’t sitting well with some, and the idea of a legal challenge is being tossed around. Gov. Eric Holcomb, who bills himself as pro-life, signed SEA 340 last weekend. It requires doctors to disclose the age, education, marital status and race of the woman who receives an abortion. It also keeps track of the number of abortions each patient has had. Patti Stauffer, vice president for public policy at Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, says it puts unnecessary restrictions into place and is government intrusion into the
sacred relationship between doctors and their patients. “Over and over again, the Indiana Legislature continues to try to practice medicine through the regulation of abortion and consistently treats the provision of abortion services differently than any other medical service,” she laments. If doctors don’t follow the new reporting guidelines, they could be charged with a Class B misdemeanor, face up to 180 days in prison, and be fined up to $1,000. Holcomb and other supporters of the legislation say it’s a way to increase patient safety. The law starts July 1, and impacts women who are suffering from potential “abortion complications”,
including serious physical ailments such as kidney failure, cardiac arrest, hemorrhaging and blood clots, but also psychological issues such as depression, anxiety and sleep disorders. Stauffer says the law isn’t about safety because abortions have lower complication rates than many other standard procedures. She says it’s about stigmatizing abortion, and lawmakers who quash reproductive rights are threatening the health of Hoosier women. “Indiana is one of the most hostile states with regards to reproductive health services, and what that translates into is what we’re seeing, is very significant increases in the number of sexually transmitted

diseases as well,” she explains. The Indiana chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union says it’s reviewing the law and has not ruled out suing the state over it. They’ve challenged other abortion laws in Indiana, including one signed by former Gov. Mike Pence that would prohibit women from getting an

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Act For MS held its Annual Spring Gala, Hooray For Hollywood, on March 18th that was held at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa in the Crystal Ballroom. The theme this year was chosen because of honoree Leo Milmet’s Love of Films. Act for MS was born when Gloria Greer started the charity when her daughter Norma was Diagnosed with the Disease. Gloria Greer realized the need
to help people and families cope and proved the necessary treatments needed to give them a better and longer life. Honorees this year were Leo Milmet and his mother, Sarah Milmet. The Milmets are big supporters of Act for MS and many other charities. Leo and his mother are well known for buying 2 or more Christmas trees during Christmas Tree Lane Gala and then donates them to other charities. Leo is a very gifted young man that is
big for his age and suggests he is much older. He spoke to the crowd and with a much older presence and seemed to shine on the stage as he spoke. He said his life’s motto is, Always Help Others First, which shows his maturity. They were honored for their Philanthropic Hearts and their support of our local Charities. The event started with a cocktail party. Co-chairs were Nelda Linsk, Marc Byrd, and Lindell Campbell. President
Margot Nelligan gave the welcoming speech the, and the Emcee was Joey English. Guests were entertained by an exceptionally gifted couple, Guiseppe Viola and Adriana Ortega. Guests entered on a Red Carpet under a circle of balloons and cardboard statues of famous Hollywood Stars. Guests were greeted by a trio of media, two photographers, and an interviewer. Just like in Hollywood when guests arrive. There were a Live auction
and a raise the paddle to raise money for Act For MS. Act For MS offers strength training, and massage therapies, Yoga classes, an Aquatic program, wellness education series, Support and event help with the Electric Bill when necessary. They hold quarterly luncheons and a resource center and ALL programs are FREE. There is help out there for MS patients with Act for MS and all its benefits programs.
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Alzheimers Coachella Valley held a fundraiser at the Fabulous PURCH on Highway 111. The event started at 5 and people drifted in all evening. The chef offered delectable treats of Shrimp, spring rolls and more. There was a table of cheeses, crackers, and fruits. Guests got to mingle and see all the new items displayed at PURCH. The fundraiser is for Alzheimer’s so they can continue their efforts to help those suffering from the disease and most importantly their caregivers. I know from experience that there was no help like this years ago. Caregivers are sometimes in denial and do not seek help which is a big mistake as the caregiver suffers in their health and well being. Support is out there if you look
for it and this is something that is sorely needed in our Valley. They have started something new by getting nurses and aides certificates for care. They have a weekly training session by a trained nurse to give them the ability needed to care for dementia patients. The service is hugely required by those who have Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The nurse instructor, Edwina Dirk, spoke and told everyone they are looking for students and explained the sessions. Other speakers said about the programs for caregivers and the help given to the patients by various facilities. A very emotional speech was given by a former caregiver of her husband, Joanie Schulman, that has passed on from the Disease. She spoke with eloquence and
emotions on what its like to be a caregiver for years and years. She said it takes a toll on a person. She was in denial and thought no one could care for her husband like she could but was finally forced to seek help. She realized it was the best thing she did for her husband and herself. Caregivers need all the help they can find, and the Alzheimers Coachella Valley can give that help. Caregivers take note. They were hoping to raise $30,000 to continue with all the programs they provide and the new nursing training program. Paul Rose announced a matching gift for all donations by attending guests. At the end of the evening, a donation of $5,000 by the Newman Foundation brought them close to reaching their goal. Volunteers are the
most significant part of this charity as most of them have suffered from someone afflicted
with dementia or Alzheimers and are very dedicated to help or eradicate this disease.
