That being said, how come most audiences don’t quickly recognize her name but always remember what her plays are about? Perhaps, it’s because Ms. Nottage usually champions the underdog.

She’s ‘David’ in the David and Goliath battles. She exposes the inequities of life and tries to broker the best in all societies with her penetrating and passionate plays. Joe Montana at the Rancho Mirage Speaker series

Joe Montana. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Rancho Mirage Speaker Series is in its 18th year and have decided to bring and new and different type of speakers for 2020. They brought super sports figures in their Legends of Sports Series. This series is so refreshing because it is about sports stars’ lives and not politics. The first speaker was Danika Patrick, who brought the story of her life in car racing to people who know little about the sport. The second speaker was a football great from the NFL and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Joe Montana.

Rancho Mirage mayor Iris Smotrich spoke to the guests and was thrilled to announce Mr. Montana as the evening’s speaker. She thanked the Rancho Mirage City Council and staff and all the volunteers that make this event happen. Leighton Ghin was again the moderator who has an impressive career from which to draw questions that relate to the guest speaker. Joe Montana spoke freely about his life before, during, and after his career in football. He said that while he was growing up, Joe thinks he

always had a ball in his hand of some sort. He remembered playing football with his dad and said his parents are the reason he is where he is today. His mom sacrificed a lot to get him to the many trips for games. He had a great way of telling a story that brought a lot of laughter from the guests who laughed with him. While in high school he played all the sports, baseball, basketball and football, basketball was his first love. He spoke about his college years and how at one point, he was at the bottom of the roster to play. Some of the players transferred or left, and he thought that maybe

Wall Street is Gambling with Your Pension Plan

By Janice Gough A pension plan is a retirement plan that requires employees to make contributions to a pool of funds set aside for a worker’s future benefit. The pool of funds is invested on the employee’s behalf, and the earnings on the investments generate income to the worker upon retirement. Unlike other Qualified plans like 401K, etc., the employee has no choice of what their contributions are invested in, thus making Pension plans easy prey to investment scams. Pensions are the retirement plans for teachers, firefighters,

and police officers, union members, large corporations, and other public entities. Pension plans have become easy prey to speculative investments. Pensions are holding investments that are very risky; some of these investments are referred to as “financial weapons of mass destruction,” just like the Sub Prime Mortgages “that brought down the market in 2008. The Sub-Prime mortgage scam was an easy way to prey on consumers because everyone wanted to own property while prices of real estate were low. The loans were secured in my “0” percent interest rate (sub below Prime interest rate) mortgages, in which the adjustable (Teaser) rate could increase any time after the lock-in initial rate. Consumers felt that the internal gain on properties would make them productive, and it would provide time for them to refinance to a set Conventional loan, as their wealth increased or sell the property at a gain. Consumers loaded up on properties, some people became “flippers,” hoping to sell for substantial gains when real estate values increased while obtaining rental income until they were sold. The loans required little underwriting and consumers, who would not usually qualify for a loan, got approved. Consumers were over-leveraged. The end

result was the foreclosure of loans, bankruptcies in which everyone involved took a HIT, and we went into recession for Five years. The loans, initially, were packaged, backed by bonds, and sold to large investors, like other countries in the world! When the loans had no value, the scheme came crashing down. Nothing has changed. Wall Street has the future in their hands again. To give people a chance to take action now and prepare before the house of cards comes crashing down back, you must investigate your pensions holdings and insist on laws for strict compliance with fiduciary laws for Pension Plans. Firms, in recent years, have devised the most secretive investments in history. These schemes are designed to conceal outrageous fees, risks, unethical, and even illegal practices to hide the financial system and with no pension transparency. Wall Street is gambling with your pensions. The pensions include many risky, secretive investments, incorporating very high fees while delivering deceptive performance results. Because of this pension deception, the most significant market correction could occur, and this next market crash will wipe you out! Employees want these types of occupations because

they offer pension plans. Can you imagine that all of these workers could be left living on Social Security only if there Pension was gone? That would cause one Hell of a recession. The Federal Reserve conceals these criminal actions along with Financial Institutions. It is their job to keep people invested in the market, not to advise of problems or schemes that would force one to withdraw from the market. Wall Street has exhibited corruption in every way possible. They are “lying” about Pension returns, along with anything conceivable in which the investors controlling the funds, make a ton of money, and leaving the average guy to lose. It is time to open the discussion and for workers to demand strict investment policies where their contributions would be Safe while producing a fair rate of return. Most employees have no idea what these firms are talking about. So they’re put into dangerous, exotic things with high fees, the same stuff the subprime guys were doing 2005-2007. This isn’t a new scenario. It has been going on for years. The Federal Reserve Bank is a criminal organization that bailed out the banks and companies like Lehman Bros., who ripped off many people. All of this was funded with our tax dollars. The Fed lowered the

interest rate to almost zero so that the pension plans can’t get any returns. If you’re expecting a 7% return, the best you can get is 2%. The pensions are going broke. In Paris and Chile, people are rioting, and it’s all about pensions. But Americans don’t talk about the U.S. pension crisis, which is why We need to investigate this investment before we end up losing Big again. The government does not talk about the crisis because they don’t want to scare the public. They have to protect the banks and financial institutions and keep the Stock market high. Most financial planners do not discuss it for the same reasons and could lose their position with their firm if they do not deliver positive news about Wall Street. I don’t trust Wall Street, the Fed, or the stock market. Navigating Elections in 2020 (and Beyond??)

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Senate Bill 323 took effect in January 2020, creating new procedural requirements for HOAs and also unintentionally creating many problems and unanswered questions. Consequently, California HOAs have many struggles to consider in their elections in 2020 and beyond. One of the first issues with the law is that it did not create a grace period before it took effect. Since the election process under the new law takes more than 90 days to complete, what do associations do if their election is in the first four months of the year? Are their elections invalid, no matter what they do? Do they follow their bylaws and hold the election as scheduled, or delay their election several months in order to comply with the new timelines? Another question regards board eligibility. If the law’s single mandatory eligibility standard (membership) and four optional standards are the only standards allowed, then many longstanding eligibility standards in thousands of

HOA bylaws across the state are now erased – standards such as candidates cannot be suing the HOA when they run, cannot have longstanding unresolved rule violations, must live in the HOA, or sign a pledge for good conduct and ethics. It is hard to comply with a law which is not clear. Another consequence of the vagueness of the law regards term limits. Many HOAs amend (through membership vote) term limits into their bylaws. However, that also is an eligibility standard, so if in fact there are only five permitted eligibility requirements, term limits are now outlawed in California HOAs. Under Corporations Code 7511(c), if 5% of the members petition for vote to recall directors, that vote must be held within 90 days of the petition – except that then the timing of revised Civil Code 5115, with its required 3 consecutive 30 day intervals, cannot be met. So, which statute to violate? Corporations 7511(c) or Civil 5115? HOA boards should not have to decide which law it will follow and which it will violate. Clearly, associations may not under new Civil 5105(g) for any reason deny a ballot to a member and so cannot suspend March 4, 2020

member voting rights. However, this overrides many HOA CC&Rs and bylaws permitting suspension of voting rights. The new Civil Code 5105(e) requires that rejected candidates be given a notice of internal dispute resolution (“IDR”) or they cannot be disqualified from the ballot. However, what if the candidate is not a member but the HOA neglects to invite the candidate to IDR- does that provision apply to non-members (a mandatory disqualification)? Can non-members be candidates simply because they did not receive an invitation to IDR? How long must the HOA keep election records? For many years, the inspector of elections had to preserve election materials for one year (the time during which someone could challenge the result), but Civil 5200(a)(14) now says that election materials must be made available to

requesting homeowners for the current and two prior years. However, why should these records be retained beyond the time period for challenges? One final unresolved question is whether all the requirements of the new election procedures apply to other votes, such as assessments or governing document amendments – must those votes also take 90 days? Associations facing these issues should consult their legal counsel. Kelly G. 93% of Nevada Voters Want to Protect Wildlife Migration Routes

By Desert Star Staff LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Wildlife in Nevada follow distinct pathways during seasonal migration, and a new survey shows state voters are eager to provide them with safe passage when they move from one place to another. In a poll released by The Pew Charitable Trusts, 93% of registered voters in Nevada believe it’s important to adopt policies that protect wildlife migration routes. Former director of the Nevada Department of Wildlife Ken Mayer says across the board, people recognize that development has created a need for overpasses and underpasses to reduce animal-vehicle collisions. “Whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican, young or old, male or female, it didn’t seem to make any difference in the support for protecting in these migratory corridors,” says Mayer. According to the Nevada Department of Transportation,

more than 5,000 animals are hit and killed by vehicles each year, and the cost of those collisions is nearly $20 million. Mayer says research shows that after the first Nevada wildlife crossings were built in 2010, more than 37,000 animals used them in the first four years. The state now has 20 wildlife crossings in place for species that migrate in Nevada - including mule deer, pronghorn antelope, and elk. Mayer says nonetheless, when animals travel from a winter range to a summer range they often encounter new obstacles that prevent a safe migration. “And it’s not their fault or their problem that we build an interstate or a housing development or mining or whatever it is that we’re disturbing the land that cuts off their access,” says Mayer. “And they try like heck to get to where they want to go, regardless of what the barriers are.” The Pew survey found that

Pronghorn are the fastest land mammal in North America, with herds capable of traveling up to 60 miles per hour. (fws.org/TomKoerner) 92% of poll respondents support the construction of additional underpasses and overpasses for wildlife. Improved data from GPS-enabled wildlife collars also is helping to revolutionize how Western states approach the issue of protecting migrating

5 Tips for a More Efficient Workday

Be Resourceful: If you are unsure how to do something at work, reach out to your colleagues for help. Make friends with another person on your team at a similar level who has been around a while. Alysa Liu vs. Kamila Valieva

Battle of the season to unfold at 2020 World Junior Figure Skating Championships

By Desert Star Staff With the season-ending junior figure skating event kicking off in Estonia next week, the main intrigue of the tournament is, who will win the ladies competition – Kamila Valieva or Alysa Liu? The two immensely

talented skaters are set to make their debut at the Junior Worlds, which will run from March 2 to 8 in Tallinn. Rising Russian star Valieva has already established herself as one of the most technicallygifted skaters with her mesmerizing, Picasso-inspired

routine ‘Girl on the ball’ already being called a masterpiece by figure skating pundits. The tiny girl with pencilstraight lines and gorgeous flexibility has acquired quad toe loop jumps, which she is expected to throw at the upcoming world tournament.

Liu, who claimed her second straight US title last month, is widely considered the main rival for Valieva, with her extraordinary technical content, which includes a triple axel and a quad lutz. In December, both girls met at the 2019 Junior Grand Prix Final in Italy, where Valieva edged out her American counterpart by three points, becoming the only skater to beat Liu this season. Valieva, who is called the ‘ballerina on ice’ for her elegant moves and artistry, traditionally has high component scores, receiving a level 4 for her jawdropping spins and footwork. She also gets positive grades of execution (GOE) for every element executed in her programs, which helps her post-high overall scores. Both skaters will be eligible to enter senior competitions in the 2021-22 season, to earn a berth in the Winter

Olympics in Beijing, where they could potentially vie for gold. Valieva, who has trained under renowned coach Eteri Tutberidze, has been stable throughout the season, winning every event she has taken part in, including the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final and the Russian Junior Championships. The 13-year-old prodigy differs from the majority of her teammates by having mature skating despite her years. She flawlessly interprets the music of her programs, creating an unforgettable spectacle on the ice. Will she be able to repeat the success she had at the Grand Prix final? In Torino, she lost the short program to Liu before rising from fourth place to claim gold. Undoubtedly, the American ace will do everything in her power to avenge the defeat inflicted by Valieva, adding spice to the principle rivalry taking center stage at the 2020 Junior World tournament.

Biden campaign gets shot in the arm with landslide SC win

By Desert Star Staff Joe Biden’s campaign showed its first signs of life in South Carolina, with the former vice president taking the lead over other Democrats in the state’s primary, including frontrunner Bernie Sanders. Biden’s efforts in the state paid off after he won nearly half of the votes on Saturday, adding 33 pledged delegates. Sanders came in a distant second with less than 20 percent of the vote but still leads Biden by six delegates overall after winning New Hampshire and Nevada and a strong performance in Iowa. South Carolina was perceived by many observers as a make-or-break moment for the Biden campaign. Opinion polls projected he would win, but the victory needed to be convincing, otherwise, he would be in a weakened position ahead of next week’s Super Tuesday, where over 1,000 delegates are up for grabs. The former vice president

in the Barack Obama administration – who was endorsed by South Carolina Representative James Clyburn – was relying heavily on black voters to win big. However, exit poll data indicates that while he did well with older African-American voters, the black youth vote was split between him and Sanders on Saturday. The Vermont senator conceded defeat at a campaign rally in Norfolk, Virginia, but was optimistic about his chances on Super Tuesday, brushing off Saturday’s loss as a minor setback. I’m very proud that in this campaign so far, we have won the popular vote in Iowa, we have won the New Hampshire primary, we have won the Nevada caucus, but you cannot win them all. As Biden basks in his victory, he has received words of support from unlikely quarters. President Donald Trump tweeted that

his success shows that it’s time for billionaire candidate Mike Bloomberg to drop out of the race to not take votes away from Biden. The former New York mayor was not on the ballot in South Carolina, focusing instead on carpet-bombing Super Tuesday states with ads. Biden’s comeback after his worse-than-expected results in previous states

boosts his chances for the nomination. Sanders has been heavy criticized by mainstream Democrats like Hillary Clinton and the national media but has nevertheless managed to gain momentum with voters. Other contenders in the race are strategizing to keep him from winning a majority of delegates and score an automatic nomination while pitching themselves

as consensus candidates at what some belief may end up being a brokered convention in Milwaukee. Much like Biden, environmentalist billionaire, Tom Steyer put a lot of effort in the South Carolina primary. It brought him just over 11 percent of the vote and no pledged delegates, after which he announced his decision to drop out of the race.

Tom Steyer bows out of Democratic presidential race By Desert Star Staff Billionaire activist Tom Steyer has given up on his presidential bid after failing to win any delegates in South Carolina, according to projections. Steyer has been accused of buying his way into the race, having spent millions. Steyer dug deep into his own pockets, spending about $20 million of his own www.desertstarweekly.com

money in South Carolina alone in hopes of overcoming the 15-percent threshold that would have allowed him to win delegates in the fourth and final early voting contest before Super Tuesday. However, it was not to be, as Steyer is now projected to win less than 12 percent of the vote in the primary, dominated by former Vice President Joe Biden.

“I can’t see a path where I can win the presidency,” Steyer said, announcing his decision to put an end to his campaign. While the former hedge fund manager from California and avowed environmentalist drops out of the race, the other billionaire – former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg – remains in the race for the Democratic Party March 4, 2020

nomination, even though Super Tuesday will mark the first occasion he appears on any primary ballots. While Steyer’s absence from the race is not likely to upset many Democrat voters (he was polling at about two percent nationwide), he did have one viral moment. Hours before the South Carolina primary, Steyer’s name made headlines after

he was filmed dancing enthusiastically alongside rapper Juvenile singing ‘Back That Azz Up’ during a campaign rally in Columbia, South Carolina. However, the stunt, whether impromptu or not, apparently did not boost the billionaire’s chances, with some saying the “painfully embarrassing dance” just made it worse.

Drop-Off Clinics Keeping People with Mental Illness Out of Jail

Tennessee’s pre-arrest diversion clinics connected more than 7,000 people to mental-health treatment instead of jail between 2017 and 2019. (Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Tennessee is increasing the number of drop-off clinics

that allow police officers to take people with mental-

health and/or substanceabuse issues to a treatment provider instead of jail. Sejal West, senior vice president for operations of Volunteer Behavioral Healthcare System, says the jail diversion program is a close collaboration between local criminal-justice systems, law enforcement and treatment providers. “Just even the process of determining which crimes, which offenses would be appropriate for this, that was done collectively,” says West. “There are lowlevel misdemeanors, where there’s not a victim. Like trespassing and loitering, public intoxication. Those are a lot of the charges we see.” West’s organization covers 31 counties in middle and east Tennessee and is slated to receive $500,000 in funding to help build a new clinic.

According to state data, between 2017 and 2019, pre-arrest diversion clinics connected more than seven thousand people to mentalhealth treatment, saving an estimated $9.8 million. Kim Parker, director of inpatient and crisis services at Pathways Behavioral Health Services, says the funding will help her organization build a new clinic in a closed-down hospital in rural west Tennessee. “We will be able to use that rural hospital to provide this service to get the people the treatment that they need,” says Parker, “as well as reduce the overcrowding in the jails.” This year Gov. Bill Lee budgeted $1.5 million to boost the pre-arrest diversion program in rural, underserved and distressed parts of the state.

Educators Praise Decision to Audit Online College

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Education groups are praising a unanimous decision by a legislative committee Wednesday to audit the state’s first online community college, called Calbright College. Lawmakers expressed concern about transparency and duplication of current offerings. Jeff Freitas, president of the California Federation of Teachers, says the $140 million invested in Calbright would have been better spent bolstering online programs at existing community colleges. “Could have done it cheaper, could have done it with the expertise of the faculty that are already employed by our community colleges,” says Freitas. Calbright College launched on October first and has 450 students enrolled, but just 38 who are pursuing

MD Bills Seen as First Step to Ending Solitary Confinement

By Desert Star Staff Addressing concerns over the impact of solitary confinement, Maryland lawmakers are looking at two bills introduced this week aimed at reforming how state prisons use it. One House bill would prohibit releasing incarcerated people directly from segregation to the street. Another would end restrictive housing for people suffering from serious mental illness, according to Rabbi Charles Feinberg - executive director of Interfaith Action for Human Rights. He says the bills are a first step toward ending

MIT/Harvard Study: Dozens of Approved Drugs May Kill Cancer

By Desert Star Staff CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A new study from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard tested thousands of existing drugs on close to six hundred types of cancer cells in humans and they found close to fifty that may kill cancer. Scientists from the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and the DanaFarber Cancer Institute used Broad’s Drug Repurposing Hub. These drugs have either been U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved or were safe in clinical trials. In this paper, which was recently published in the journal “Nature Cancer,” they tested drugs that weren’t meant for cancer therapies. Study first author, Drug Repurposing Hub founder and Broad Institute Oncologist Dr. Steven Corsello explains that in the past, scientists often would start with a target inside of a cancer cell in mind. Then,

they would find a drug that worked against that target. “In our study, we started in the other direction,” says Corsello. “So we started with all of the drugs, and then selected the ones with promising cancerkilling capabilities.” They were able to do this all at once with a new tool called DNA barcoding: basically, they tagged each human cancer cell line with a DNA barcode. They then pooled several cancer cell lines together in a petri dish, and exposed each group of barcoded cancer cells to a single drug or compound. Some of the most promising drugs they found were used for diabetes, alcoholism and inflammation. Corsello shares one of the biggest surprises about this study of non-oncology - or, non-cancer - drugs. “Interestingly, when nononcology drugs kill cancer, they’re actually usually

The Drug Repurposing Hub at the Broad Institute now has a collection of more than 6,000 approved drugs in humans. (Drug Repurposing Hub/YouTube) working in a completely unexpected manner,” says Corsello. “Meaning working through a different mechanism than the drug was originally designed for.” For example, the drug tepoxalin can be used to treat

arthritis pain in dogs, and was found to be safe in humans in clinical trials. Corsello says they found tepoxalin can kill cancer cell lines that have adapted themselves to evade chemotherapy. Tepoxalin and other

promising drugs from the study will have to go through anywhere between one and five years of additional studies before being ready for clinical trials in human cancer patients.

Officials in Riverside County Monitoring Coronavirus Outbreak NBC PS Nico Payne Officials in Riverside County have said they were monitoring COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, as the first U.S. death from the disease was reported in the Pacific Northwest. Public health officials are stressing that there are “no new or existing confirmed cases” of the virus in the county. “City leaders are actively monitoring the COVID-19 (Coronavirus), working w/ Riverside County Department of Public Health & other agencies closely,” the Riverside City Fire Department Office of Emergency Management tweeted. Assemblywoman Sabrina Cervantes, D-Corona, said she and her team continue to “monitor the situation closely” and urged the public “to help spread facts, not fear.” Officials reported on Saturday that a King County, Washington man in his 50s

died of the coronavirus and had underlying health issues. President Donald Trump gave a televised update on the outbreak Saturday, where he announced new travel restrictions involving Iran and warnings about travel to parts of Italy and South Korea, where high virus activity has been detected. Trump appeared with Vice President Mike Pence — who was appointed by Trump to lead the U.S. response to the crisis — and officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, who all stressed that the current risk to U.S. citizens was extremely low. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people can best protect themselves from the respiratory virus by washing their hands with soap and water, avoiding touching their eyes, nose, and mouth; and

staying home when sick. Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser said the common flu was a more significant public health threat and would claim more lives in the U.S. than coronavirus. Meanwhile, more than 50 county residents who recently returned to the U.S. from other countries remained quarantined inside their homes due to potential exposure to coronavirus, according to the Riverside County Department of Public Health. On Tuesday, one county resident who was evacuated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Japan tested positive for the coronavirus and is being treated in Northern California, county health officials said. The patient was not identified. Health officials said the person “is expected to fully recover.” The number of people who have been diagnosed with the virus throughout

HOROSCOPES ARIES

You’re different these day, more motivated, focused and purposeful than other signs (except Capricorn). You can therefore be misunderstood by peers, associates, colleagues and groups. Your capacity for leadership is extraordinary. However, often you cannot work with others, needing to create your own systems. One day you will stumble into the field of subtle energies - the etheric field. Here everyone and everything is connected. Pisces & Gemini live here. You can too.

MARCH 4 – 10, 2020 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

CANCER

Do you experience separation from something or someone? Do you feel a lessening of your energy, betrayed by your desires, hopes and aspirations? It’s important to realize you have the ability to see the many different subtle worlds. Give yourself adequate respect or recognition for these gifts. They are a force for Goodwill. They provide direction. Stand closer to these worlds.

LEO

Although most don’t realize this, you seek to subtly and quietly prove your value and self-worth. So often you stand in shadows and behind the curtains. However, you must realize the great need in the world for the information you possess. Young aspirants, minds not yet restructured, with the desire to learn seek your advice. You were once in their place. Remember?

Did something occur when you were little in relation to your parents? Were they absent, unavailable, hurting you or themselves? And did these experiences create a hard shell around you? Your heart constantly seeks understanding and healing. With others, so often, you’re disappointed. No one seems to understand your needs. So you draw boundaries around yourself for safety. Wisdom says to simply and always give your heart away.

GEMINI

VIRGO

TAURUS

So, what is the primary emotional wound experienced as a young child? It dominates you at times. This is good impelling you to move in a new direction, allowing the crisis spiritual teachings bring forth. The result is an inner balance, harmony and entrance into the Ashram (for which you need preparation). Then you relax into a class you’ve secretly longed for. Everyone’s waiting.

You’re very aware of the mind-body connection, of working with your health so that diet and nutrition are most important. You realize that you must, each day, keep yourself emotionally balanced, be able to concentrate on the needs of others, be able to discriminate between what others need and what you need. They are different. This is a learning curve. Connect

with others not through pain but through how they serve.

LIBRA It’s important to recognize the many ways you’re creative, how you communicate and what makes you feel healthy, wealthy and wise. It’s important also to know the difference between happiness, joy and bliss. Happiness is an everyday, personality feeling. Joy is a Soul experience when we make contact and love is released. Bliss is otherworldly. It comes from Spirit. Which do you experience?

SCORPIO It would be good to learn your family lineage, history and heritage. You are sensitive to everything. However, you hide it. When we know our roots, where we came from, who our relatives were, and their history, we are able to understand ourselves better and accept our family’s behaviors. We also realize what changes we might initiate within ourselves. So many of us don’t know who we are. Studying our family, less and less do we feel abandoned.

SAGITTARIUS Are you feeling in control, on a journey, completely at home, calm, kind and wise? Or do you feel alienated, misguided, separate and without adequate foundation? Perhaps you feel eccentric or so spiritual you sense others no longer understand you. Perhaps you will want

to write about this. Is there’s difficulty in making yourself understood? Or perhaps you’re not understanding yourself? Someone’s not listening. Is it you? The Soul is always listening.

one must be spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically strong. Allow no nervous tension or worries. You are bringing secrets out into the open for the benefit of humanity. You are a teacher and healer. Protect yourself. Happy Birthday.

CAPRICORN Notice how much pleasure you receive from resources offered everywhere and all around. There is a difference between money, possessions, resources and wealth. If you define each one, you see the subject here is one of values. Note what is of value to you? What do you value the most? Are you of value? What is value? Everything comes down to self-worth and self-value. You are worthy.

Supporters of Tobacco-Control Bills Make Push at MN Capitol By Desert Star Staff ST. PAUL, Minn. - Bills related to smoking prevention have seen a flurry of activity in recent days at the Minnesota capitol. Supporters hope the measures continue to advance, while opponents speak out

against some of the legislation. One bill, endorsed by a pair of Senate committees this week, would raise the tobaccobuying age to 21. Even though similar action was recently taken at the federal level, Laura Smith - spokesperson

for ClearWay Minnesota - says states need their own laws to provide enforcement clarity. “Our state Tobacco 21 law does things like require signage,” says Smith, “and it creates a public database so we can see how we’re

doing when it comes to compliance checks that are already happening.” While that bill hasn’t encountered strong opposition this session, some lawmakers in past sessions have questioned whether the move would create an underground market. Meanwhile, opponents have been more vocal about a separate bill that would ban all flavored tobacco products. They issued the same argument about an underground market of illegal products being sold. But Smith and others say flavored tobacco items pose a danger because of a

strong interest among teens. Smith adds that temporary federal restrictions are not strong enough, and leave plenty of products on the shelves for young adults to get their hands on. “If we can take the flavor out of it,” says Smith, “we can really get rid of the attractiveness factor of e-cigarette use.” The flavor-ban measure gets a committee hearing today in the House. Other tobacco bills being considered include banning smoking in cars with children present, and reauthorization of smoking prevention efforts.

Tom Hanks Brings Mr. Rodgers to Life on Screen

While Tom Hanks didn’t take home an Oscar for his portrayal as Fred Rogers in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” he turned in a warm, winning performance that captured the essence of TV’s extraordinary father figure “Mr. Rodgers.” Fred Rogers, born March 20, 1928, was not only a writer, musician, and producer for his children’s show “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood” he was also an ordained Presbyterian minister. And while his program reached countless thousands of children, his warm presentation made each child feel as if he were speaking to them on an individual basis. When he walked in and donned his red sweater, he invited the children to join him and be his neighbor...and they did. The film “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” directed by Marielle Heller (“Can You Ever Forgive Me” and “Diary of a Teenage Girl”) is based on a relationship between Mr. Rogers and

Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) who is assigned to write a feature on Mr. Rogers for Esquire by his editor (Christine Lahti). Usually, Vogel digs up unflattering truths about his subjects, but Mr. Rogers turns out to be too good to be true. Lloyd’s character is loosely based on journalist Tom Junod who wrote a cover story on Rogers in 1998 for Esquire. This led to a friendship that lasted until Fred Rogers’ death in 2003. However, unlike Lloyd in the film, Junod did not have an estranged relationship with his father. This aspect of the story was invented by screenwriters Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue. As the film begins, we meet Lloyd and his wife (Susan Kelechi Watson), who are the parents of a baby boy. Trouble erupts when they attend his sister’s wedding because his father Jerry (Chris Cooper) is one of the guests. Jerry abandoned his family years ago, and now suddenly, he is back in their lives. At the reception, Jerry tries to talk with his son, but

Lloyd wants nothing to do with him. This eventually leads to a fistfight and a black eye. When Lloyd shows up at Mr. Roger’s Pittsburgh studio for his interview, Fred gently questions him about his eye. He also skillfully keeps their conversations light and nonconfrontational. Over time a genuine friendship is formed between these two men. In the film, Lloyd conducts

portions of his interview on the set of Mr. Rogers’s show. This is fun because we get to meet and enjoy the many little puppets Mr. Rogers created like Daniel Tiger and King Friday XIII. Tom Hanks is warm and believable as Fred Rogers, and it is interesting to note that according to Fred’s wife, Mr. Roger’s enjoyed Tom Hanks as an actor. Hence, it is perfect

that Tom was able to bring Mr. Rodger’s to life once again in this thoroughly enjoyable film. “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” is rated PG 13 for some durable thematic material, a brief fight, and some mild language. This genuinely charming film is now available on DVD and Blu ray and has a running time of 1 hour, 40 minutes.

Faith Leaders Work for Full Count of Racial, Ethnic Minorities

By Desert Star Staff DENVER -- Colorado’s faith community is stepping up efforts to ensure historically undercounted racial and ethnic minority Coloradans participate in the 2020 census. Auxiliary Bishop Jorge Rodriguez with the Catholic Archdiocese of Denver said all people, regardless of race, religion or immigration status, are made in God’s image and deserve to be counted. He sees participation as a moral obligation because of the impact it will have on programs families rely on. “This is what is at the heart of the census,” Rodiguez said. “It’s not about numbers, it’s about how these numbers will help us to put in place programs according to those numbers, according to those families and children.” Longstanding - and largely substantiated - distrust of government remains one of the biggest barriers for participation among communities of color, and faith leaders are reminding residents that all personal information collected in the

census is confidential and cannot be shared with other government agencies. Rabbi Salomon Gruenwald with the Hebrew Educational Alliance said because every human being is of immeasurable worth, all U.S. residents are worthy of being seen. When people fill out the census form, they are saying, “we are here, we are part of ‘we the people.’” “And every 10 years our country gets together to count every single person,” Gruenwald said. “It’s a mandate to count every person, and it also teaches a civics lesson that every person here counts, everybody has something to contribute.” This month, the U.S. Census Bureau will send an invitation by mail to every household. Responding should take about ten minutes to complete online, on paper to return by mail, or by telephone. Colorado receives $13 billion each year in federal funding based on census numbers, for nutrition programs, education, health care, programs for children, veterans, seniors, and more.

Paul Harraka spoke to the audience about the mission of Childhelp and how they are well known worldwide. He said kids are broken on the inside, and when they are transferred from one foster home to another, that healing doesn’t begin. Childhelp has programs to help a child heal with arts, horses, caring, a feeling of family, and more. They meet the emotional, spiritual, educational needs of children that have been abused and neglected for at-risk children.

Latino Voters Feel Ignored by Major Candidates By Desert Star Staff As voters head to the polls today in Minnesota and 13 other states, advocates for Latino voters say they don’t feel major presidential candidates engage enough with their communities. In recent months, some national Latino groups didn’t receive any feedback from certain candidates when submitting surveys or trying to schedule meetings. Francisco

Segovia runs an outreach group in the Twin Cities and said after trying to get more Latinos to participate in elections, he has found it often isn’t a priority for them because they feel ignored. “I realized that I wasn’t alone, that oftentimes, people running for office are not connecting with our communities,” Segovia said. He said while it may take some time for his demographic

to become convinced to participate in elections, that doesn’t mean major candidates should avoid them. According to the Pew Research Center, 32 million Latinos could be eligible to vote this fall. The report said that would be a record, and would exceed the number of eligible black voters for the first time. Segovia said in the political world, there’s also the belief that Latinos only care about

immigration issues. But he says that’s not the case. “Immigration is key for us, but it’s not the only issue,” he said. “We care about health care, access to education and other things.”

The same Pew Research Center survey found more than 70% of Latinos favored the government playing a larger role in providing health care. A majority also said they support stricter gun laws.

In 2018, Minnesota led the nation in voter turnout, but Latino advocates say there’s still a racial gap in participation. They say that could be in part because Latinos often feel ignored by candidates. (Adobe Stock) www.desertstarweekly.com

New Tobacco Products May Further Confuse Public By Desert Star Staff The Food and Drug Administration recently approved a new heat-not-burn tobacco product called IQOS for sale in the U.S., but some Kentucky public-health officials say consumers are being left in the dark when it comes to knowing what the side effects and long-term health risks of new products are. Elizabeth AndersonHoagland, health promotion section supervisor with the Kentucky Department for Public Health, noted the tobacco industry is focused on creating more high-tech purported alternatives to traditional cigarettes. “The more products introduced in the marketplace, the more confused the public is going to be, AndersonHoagland said. “Because, how do you keep straight what tobacco product is what, what the side effects are, what the consequences of use are?

She said low-income Kentuckians tend to disproportionately use tobacco products. According to the latest state data, 46% of low-income adults and 42% of those with less than a high-school education currently smoke cigarettes. Bonnie Hackbarth, vice president for external affairs with the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, said the state takes in close to $500 million a year in tobaccotax revenues. Big tobacco spends another $280 million marketing its products in the Commonwealth, yet Kentucky spends only $3.3 million annually on helping people quit. Hackbarth said she doesn’t think that’s enough. “And we need to be able to have more funding to reach these kids with prevention programs, and also to help adult tobacco users quit, she said.

Tobacco use costs Kentucky an estimated $1 billion a year in direct health-care expenses. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Scientists Warn Climate Change is Destroying CA Kelp Forests By Desert Star Staff MONTEREY, Calif. -- Kelp forests off the West Coast are being decimated at an alarming rate by marine heat waves linked to climate change, according to seven top marine scientists who just wrote an open letter about it that was published in Science magazine. Fiorenza Micheli, a professor of marine science at Stanford University and co-director of the school’s Center for Ocean Solutions, said kelp forests are a sentinel

for the health of the oceans. “We are seeing change that is happening very rapidly and on a very large scale,” she said, “and it’s affecting this ecosystem -- and very little is being done.” Studies have predicted that unless the world stops dumping increasing amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, marine heat waves will become the “new normal” by the end of this century. Micheli called for better monitoring and more research to identify heat-

resistant types of kelp that can be used for restoration. Off the coast of Northern California, 90% of kelp has died off in the past five years, which threatens many species of commercially important fish. Micheli said she believes the United States must join other countries to tackle climate change, the ultimate driver of this problem. “Global action in addressing the ultimate cause of this problem -- that is the most important part of

this,” she said. “Everything else is really just a way of buying some time.” She said California, Oregon and Washington state need to coordinate efforts to

restore damaged kelp forests, remove some of the sea urchins that are overfeeding on the kelp, and protect otters and other species that prey on sea urchins.

Trump imposes more travel restrictions, says risk still ‘very low’ By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump on Saturday addressed fears surrounding the coronavirus, as health officials have announced the first US death from the virus in Washington State. The first US death from the virus was announced on Saturday by Washington State health officials. No details were given, except that it occurred in King County. The deceased was a “medically high-risk patient in her late 50s,” President Trump announced at his White House press conference on Saturday afternoon. While admitting more cases within the US are likely, the president said 15 of the 22 citizens who contracted the virus have “recovered fully or they’re well on their way to recovery.” Trump also announced he is meeting with representatives from pharmaceutical companies at the White House on Monday to discuss a response to the virus, including the creation and distribution of a vaccine. The president warned the media not to “incite panic because there is no reason to panic.” He insisted that contracting the coronavirus is still highly unlikely for most citizens, and stressed it is not guaranteed to be lethal. “If you’re healthy, you’ll probably go through a process and you’ll be fine,” Trump said.

Vice President Mike Pence, head of the Coronavirus Task Force, also spoke to the media and announced a Level 4 travel advisory for US citizens. The State Department is issuing the advisory, which is for the parts of Italy and South Korea most affected by the virus. Pence also announced an extension on the travel ban pertaining to Iran, which now includes “any foreign national who has visited Iran in the last 14 days.” The FDA has ramped up its laboratory testing, and more US cases have been reported this week, some of which cannot not be explained by foreign travel – a previous common factor for victims of the virus, which is believed to have begun in Wuhan, China. The Department of Health previously announced two new cases on Friday evening, including a highschool student in Snohomish County who had not recently traveled. While tests for the virus were positive, they are still waiting on confirmation from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. President Trump downplayed the coronavirus on Friday evening during a rally in North Charleston, South Carolina. He accused the Democratic Party of “politicizing” the virus, and referred to it as “their new hoax,” a statement which sparked a backlash

from Democrats including presidential hopeful Joe Biden, who called Trump’s words “absolutely dangerous.” Trump announced on Wednesday that he was ramping up efforts to respond to the coronavirus, with Vice President Mike Pence being chosen to lead the charge. He added that the risk to the American people remained “very low,” while also noting the “regular flu” claims more lives than the new virus has so far. “We’re ready to adapt and ready to do whatever we have to as the disease spreads, if it spreads,” he added. The administration has asked for $2.5 billion in emergency funds to respond to the virus, a number which Democrats have criticized as being far too low.

Trump says Buttigieg’s dropping out of Democratic race is plot to ‘take Sanders out of play’ By Desert Star Staff Reacting to the reports of Pete Buttigieg’s killing his presidential bid, US President Donald Trump argued that it was the “real beginning” of not such a covert ploy by Democrats to get rid of their frontrunner, Bernie Sanders. Taking to Twitter on Sunday evening, Trump suggested that Buttigieg’s termination of his campaign has set the wheels in motion for the establishment Democrats’ blitzkrieg to stop Sanders’ potential nomination dead in its tracks. Donald J Trump: “Pete Buttigieg is OUT. All of his SuperTuesday votes will go to Sleepy Joe Biden. Great timing. This is the

REAL beginning of the Dems taking Bernie out of play - NO NOMINATION, AGAIN!” Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor’s decision to put an end to his bid came out as rather unexpected considering that it comes just two days ahead of crucial Super Tuesday, when 14 states will cast their ballots for a Democratic nominee. While Buttigieg’s campaign has somewhat lost its momentum since his stunning, although nothing short of controversial, victory in the first Democratic party early voting contest in Iowa, where he butted heads with Sanders, and a strong showing in New Hampshire , where he

narrowly lost to the Vermont independent, he managed to finish in the top four in the South Carolina primary on Saturday. It’s not the first time by far Trump has accused the Democratic Party of attempting to rob Sanders of his chance to challenge him in the 2020 presidential election, while comparing the current Democratic nomination saga to that of 2016, heavily skewed in Hillary Clinton’s favor. Back then, Sanders, who rode a wave of popular support, lost to Clinton, whose campaign coordinated with the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to secure her nomination behind Sanders’ back.

Dezart Performs Stages the Triumphant Pulitzer Prize Drama “Sweat”

(left to right) - Corydon Melgoza and Cortez Jackson. Photo by David Lee Continued from Page 1 the less fortunate among us where the vernacular of the street and its language rules the day. (A note of caution here: there is a plethora of adult language throughout the play with f-bombs being hurled from the stage so leave the kiddies and grandma at home). Not everyone wants to think introspectively about how the sum of society’s parts today illustrates the total problems the world faces in the twentyfirst century. The prospects, for most of us, regarding solutions, are too daunting, with many in denial about the future of America’s workforce. The story of “SWEAT” takes place in Reading, Pennsylvania, in the years 2000 through 2008, where America’s industrial manufacturing plants are facing ever-increasing layoffs as jobs are moving elsewhere, even overseas. It’s not a rosy picture. Many fear the days of the Great Depression of the 1930s and the new mood of Corporate America, where their “bottom-line mantra” of financial belt-tightening policies will return and effect everyone. America’s Union movement is coming under increasing attack to accept less in negotiations with management. Most in America’s rust belt communities live from paycheck to paycheck. There are more worker bees than there are management types, with the union caught between these two powerful forces. “SWEAT” is the compelling story of one such Pennsylvania factory where more friends work on the factory floor as hourly workers, must now come face to face with the inevitability of layoffs that test

long-time friendships and even family relationships. The Dezart Performs production produced by Michael Shaw and Clark Dugger, is brilliantly and seamlessly directed by Shaw. His directorial vision of how to bring this potent story to the stage of the Palm Springs Woman’s Club is a story in its own right. Ms. Nottage’s play features a cast of nine characters, each with a compelling story to share with the audience. The Pearl Mc Manus theatre becomes the arena and a metaphor for the struggles of all working-class Americas as they try to hang on to their piece of the “American Dream” in perilous times. The central performing space, wonderfully designed by Thomas L. Valach, takes place in a neighborhood Bar frequented practically every day by the factory floor workers. It’s so authentic looking in atmosphere, and in execution, there are real beer taps dispensing real beer - the audience applauded when the lights came up. It’s the workers watering hole of choice where they gather over a beer or a shot of their favorite beverage to unwind, discuss their kids, politics, their fears, and dreams, as well as exchange gossip involving the company management demands of more work for less pay. Even though the production is chock full of highly nuanced individual performances by gifted actors, the strength of this impressive production lies in the ensemble performance of the entire company. Director Shaw becomes the symphony conductor, so to speak, who orchestrates his cast into becoming a finely-

tuned performing theatrical instrument. There isn’t a false note by the actors in this gutwrenching, blisteringly raw, and powerful drama. Yes, there is a lot of shouting taking place on stage, but the life-altering issues stretch the characters’ emotions to the breaking point. The outstanding cast includes: Eddie Stephens as Evan, who sets the tone of the production as a parole officer/ advisor; Corydon Melgoza as Jason, a troubled society outcast for his many tattoos that adorn his body and for his frequent brushes with the criminal justice system; make him a ticking bomb waiting to explode; Cortez Johnson as Chris, also a past criminal justice system individual who is struggling to return to society; Mike Trulock as Stan, the bartender who runs but doesn’t own the bar, is charged with keeping the peace when things get out of hand as a result of the frustrations his patrons feel over the

uncertainty of their jobs and their families. I don’t know who is responsible for the authentic fight sequence in the Bar area, but it is one of the bestchoreographed action scenes I’ve seen in a very long time. Miguel Arballo as Oscar, the Puerto Rican the all-round bar-factotum employee; Theresa Jewett as factory floor worker Tracey and mother of Jason; Desiree Clarke as Cynthia, and mother of Chris; formerly a factory floor worker, who is recently elevated to be the floor workers Union representative, a step up the ladder that tests the friendship of Tracey, and Melanie Blue as Jessie, a besotted factory floor worker who made alcoholism her best friend as way of dulling the pain of her less than successful life; and a sensational Cary Thompson as Brucie, an addict, and father of Chris and ex-husband of Cynthia. It’s a cast to die for. In the technical and creative department led by director

Shaw, the production features the incredible set design by Thomas L. Valach, that is enhanced by professional lighting designer Phil Murphy, allowing the costumes designs of Frank Cazares to be fully appreciated, along with the Hair and Make-up designs of Selene Colon and the Sound designs of Clark Dugger, who is also responsible for the informative projection designs that lend an extra element of detail to the production. Often, attention to detail is what separates a good production from a great production. The Stage Manager is Sierra Barrick. Well Done All! “SWEAT” is an absorbing and profound production that grapples with the issues plaguing most of America’s workforce today.
