Timeshares – Are They Worth It?
By Janice Gough Time Shares can be challenging to understand. Before buying one, you should consider your likes and dislikes about traveling. If you enjoy going to local places and flexibility for your vacation, it may not be for you. If you are single, it may not be the right choice for you, as it is not always easy to find someone who can travel with you, get time off to do so, have the money to do so, and is a person that you can get along with. Also, most resorts are not animal-friendly, so you must consider the cost of

boarding your pet as part of the expenses for travel. These are some considerations: 1. Are there good choices with the places you would like to go to? Favorite Places are harder to get into because when the new year starts, they fill up fast and sometimes you may have to book the trip a year in advance to go. If the TS has many places to go nearby, this is a plus because you will save money using ground transportation to get there. 2. Am I purchasing the right amount of time? In other words, if I can only get away from home one week a year, why buy two weeks, as you will put yourself in a position of losing the one week or giving it away. 3. What is the rating for these resorts through Travel Advisor? Things that people do not realize when they buy the timeshare: 1. You will have closing fees and taxes due, just as if you purchased other real estates. 2. What is the interest rate for financing (usually high, with an option to pay it off early without penalty)? They will generally finance you over ten years. 3. Who are the TS’s Affiliate and # and locations of those resorts? Realize that Affiliates offer surplus inventory and many times you may be able to stay a day or so at a time, rather than a full week,
as regular vacation time for that location may be sold out early, so you are booking there “empty day” rooms. 4. What are the Annual Association Dues and Taxes? The number of dues is based on the amount of time your own. 5. If your home base resort in which you have a title, has a lot of property around it to manage, golf courses, tennis courts, lakes, etc., your dues are going to be much higher than the places that have lower maintenance and less property to manage. 6. Is the week assigned as your home week going to be a time of the year you can travel? Home week reservations are guaranteed, as long as you book at least a month ahead. 7. Are you familiar with Transfer Fees, Cancellation Rules, Check In and Check Out times, Parking Fees, other Resort Fees, such as the use of Spa or Gym? 8. Remember, Unless you put the property in a trust, it will have to go thru probate to be transferred to an heir. What should I do if I agreed to buy and have “buyer’s remorse”? Cancellation is possible and the period depends on the State where it is located. Generally, 10-15 days is allowed. However, the “Fax in” Cancellation form usually is hidden in the book they give you, so you must go through it to find the document right away, so you know the
rules and time frames. Anyone who has ever gone through the TS presentation can tell you that initially, things start very pleasant; however, can get very stressful. TS salespeople can be type-cast as very nice charismatic people. They will say to you’re their story and show you pictures of their kids, wife, ect., to relate better to you. However saying “No” to them many times can bring on a lot of stress, because when they cannot close you, they will call for their manager, etc., who will come in and start making possibly lower offers and they will not give up on the number of people who will come to their aid until you agree to sign. You could easily spend a whole day of a vacation stressed out by their spiel. They are trained professionals who will high-pressure you or guilt you into purchasing. The TS may offer you “freebies,” an extra trip, a nice lunch, etc., however, if you sign there is no free lunch. They make up the minor cost thru all the fees charged to members. TS salespeople typically try to enhance you with the beauty of their facility. They always speak of the purchase as an Opportunity. And should you say “NO” 50 times, they will let you know that you will never get the “Opportunity” again. Even though their sales person connects to you like an old friend, they will hardly speak to you if you walk without buying. Some TShares use
annoying tactics like loud music, which keeps you from logically thinking. The salespeople may make up lies to convince you that the property values are increasing rapidly, due to some “fictitious story” they tell you. They may also work in tandem with another Sales person to convince you that it is all real. But, once you have left and check out their assumptions and find them false, their Home Office will not do anything. You would have to file a complaint with the Real Estate Board in the area you purchased. And submit a cancellation in the time allotted. If you are attending the presentation for the “Freebees,” plan a good exit strategy. Know what time allotment you have agreed to. Take a friend, who will help you say “NO.” Have someone waiting after time allotment, to take you back to your room, with a good excuse of why you must leave now, such as the Ice Cream cake is in the car for the party you are having. Plan your escape. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in Palm Springs, Ca. Janice can be reached by email at Janice@GoughFinancialSvcs. com. Or via phone at Bus. (760)250-7724 or Cell (650) 200-8291. Social Work Month: Protecting Those Who Protect Others
By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Those who provide comfort and protection for Ohioans in crisis say they need more support in their efforts. March is National Professional Social Work Month, and in Ohio there are more than 27,000 social workers providing assistance in schools, hospitals, mental health facilities and social service agencies. Danielle Smith, executive director of the National Association of Social Workers in Ohio, says social workers are often unrecognized and under compensated for their work. And she maintains government funding is inadequate for the increasing number of caseloads. “Ohio is one of the worst states in the country for state funding for child protective service agencies,” she states. “So that leads to sending one person to do a site visit instead
of two like you would do in the past. The government and what it funds is vitally important to social work and to our safety.” Smith adds social worker pay lags behind other professions that perform similar duties. The average annual salary for social workers in Ohio is $48,000, compared to about $57,000 for a teacher and $70,000 for a registered nurse. Angelo McClain, the CEO of the National Association of Social Workers, notes social workers are the largest providers of mental health services and also on the front lines of the opioid crisis. “Social workers are providing the mental health and substance abuse services and also child protective services for those families as well,” he points out. “This one social problem has a ripple effect and social workers are front and center on helping address those issues.”
Despite expected growth in social work professions in coming years, Smith says there is still a very high turnover rate. She explains it can be dangerous work, and about one-third of social workers have been assaulted. “Some social workers are
seeing clients and their families really at their worst and their most vulnerable,” she explains. “They’re often in crisis and, at times, when they’re not able to think as clearly as other times. So, there is a risk from clients, their families and really kind of the environments they’re in.”
Congress is considering measures to better support the profession, including HR 1289 that would offer resources to recruit more social workers and HR 1309, which calls for workplace violence prevention plans at social service agencies.
By Desert Star Staff The House Judiciary Committee has launched a new probe into US President Donald Trump that will focus on whether or not his administration engaged in “obstruction of justice, corruption, and abuses of power.” Committee chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler said the panel is sending document requests to 81 people linked to Trump, as a way to “begin building the public record” for the sweeping probe. Democratic leaders have promised to investigate all issues thoroughly and to review special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on alleged “collusion” between Trump and Russian officials
during the 2016 campaign before taking any significant action. It is likely, however, that many Democrats see the new investigation as a way to set the stage for impeaching Trump. Nadler said he believes it is “very clear” that Trump obstructed justice and told the panel wants to review documents from the Justice Department as well as from the president’s son Donald Trump Jr. and Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg. Former White House chief of staff John Kelly and former White House counsel Don McGahn will also likely be looked into as part of the probe. Nadler’s letter asking
for documents said the Trump administration faces “wide-ranging allegations of misconduct that strike at the heart of our constitutional order.” The letter requested that the documents are provided by March 18 or potential subpoenas will be issued. The probe comes as Mueller is expected to wrap up the long-running investigation into Trump’s alleged Russia ties, likely without finding any evidence of collusion — an outcome which would go against a narrative which has been promoted by Democrats and the media for two years. Nadler said the committee probe would potentially go beyond the Mueller probe, however, prompting
accusations from Republicans that the new investigation is just a desperate attempt by Democrats to figure out a new way to impeach Trump. Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan said the new investigation would amount to a “Kangaroo court” while Georgia Rep Doug Collins, the top Republican on the committee, said that Nadler had “recklessly prejudged” the president for obstruction of justice while admitting that he did not yet have facts to back it up. Speaking to ABC’s This Week, Nadler claimed the probe is not an impeachment inquiry, saying that before you impeach someone, “you have to persuade the American public that it ought to happen.” The
committee does not “have the evidence all sorted out” to start an impeachment process, he said. The latest document requests mean investigations into Trump look set to continue for the foreseeable future, even if the Mueller probe does not turn up evidence of collusion, as Democrats expected it would. Trump has repeatedly denounced the Mueller investigation as a “witch hunt.” On Sunday, he accused “crazed” Democrats of “Presidential Harassment,” in a tweet. Commenting on the requests, the White House said it would “review” the letter “and respond at the appropriate time.”

Dreamers Still Delayed
By Desert Star Staff CINCINNATI – March 5, 2018, was the deadline President Donald Trump gave Congress to develop permanent solutions for DACA recipients. The day passed, and a year later young immigrants still are unsure about their future. DACA, which stands for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, allowed some 700,000 children of undocumented immigrants to receive protection from deportation. Trump’s attempts to end the program are tied up in federal courts. Sandra Ramirez, immigration program organizer for the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center in Cincinnati, says that for these so-called Dreamers it’s like living on a time clock. “One day they could be at work, at school, and then the next day they could be
declared undocumented,” she states. “So, we’re still here, and we’re still fighting for a clean Dream Act with no strings attached.” A March Forth 4 Citizenship rally will be held at 5 p.m. Monday in front of the Freedom Center in Cincinnati to call for a permanent DACA solution. According to the Migration Policy Institute, there were more than 4,000 DACA recipients in Ohio in 2018 of some 11,000 who were eligible for the program. Ramirez says DACA recipients must apply for renewal every two years, and once they age out of the program, they don’t have a way to become legal citizens. But she stresses the U.S. is their home. “They grow up knowing that this is their lifestyle, and this is the life that they only know how to live,” she points out. “It’s like having your life

Tandem Vehicle Smuggling Attempt Stopped by Border Patrol
By Desert Star Staff EL CENTRO, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested two suspected smugglers who illegally brought 14
undocumented immigrants into the country in a tandem vehicle incursion Friday morning. The arrest occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m., after agents observed two
vehicles, a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a pick-up truck, drive through the international border around 14 miles west of the Calexico Port of Entry. Agents observed the
vehicles travel northbound across the desert until the cars headed eastbound on Highway 98. Agents responded and conducted vehicle stops on the highway. Agents determined that the driver of the SUV, a 31-year-old Mexican national, had eight Mexican national passengers, who had no legal authority to be in the country. The driver of the pick-up truck, a 23-year-old Mexican citizen, had six Mexican domestic passengers. Agents took all 16 people into custody. “Vehicle incursions into the United States are unacceptable and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. By Desert Star Staff A new report published by the New York-based environmental advocacy group, Natural Resources Defense Council, revealed that the heavy use of toilet paper in the US is harming Canadian forests. According to the study, called ‘The Issue with Tissue,’ the most significant US manufacturers of toilet paper and tissue products, such as Procter & Gamble, KimberlyClark, and Georgia-Pacific use virgin wood pulp from Canadian boreal forests, which means that they do not use recycled material. As a result, thousands of hectares of Canadian woods are cut down every year by industrial logging. The report also says
that an average American consumes three rolls of toilet paper a week, while the refusal of the biggest brands “to create more sustainable products makes consumers unwittingly complicit in flushing forests down the toilet.” The worst offenders are the brands of Charmin Ultra Soft, Quilted Northern, Angel Soft, Kirkland Signature, and Up&Up Soft & Strong toilet tissues, according to the report, prepared in cooperation with Canadian grassroots environmental organization Stand.earth. In terms of revenues, the US is the world’s secondbiggest tissue market with estimated earnings of about $31 billion annually. US
citizens that make up just four percent of the global population account for more than 20 percent of global tissue consumption. “Canada’s boreal forest also stores nearly two times as much carbon as is in all the world’s recoverable oil reserves combined,” the study says. “Toilet paper and tissue manufacturers continue to rely on forests even though they have the resources and means to create and deliver products with recycled and responsibly sourced content that are better for the planet.” According to the study, Canadian boreal is a vast landscape of coniferous, birch and aspen trees, and the country contains
some of the last of the world’s remaining intact forests. At the same time, more than 600 indigenous species are inhabiting the woods, including boreal caribou, pine marten, and billions of songbirds. “Instead of relying on virgin fiber from ancient forests,

By Desert Star Staff DENVER – A new bill making its way through the Colorado General Assembly would protect consumers from surprise out-of-network bills in situations where they either didn’t know they were being sent out of network or didn’t have a choice. The law would have helped Zoe Williams. Two years after her child was transferred to Denver Health Medical Center for a broken leg, Williams was summoned to court for more
than $15,000 in medical bills she thought her insurance company already had paid. “There’s no way that we could come up with that amount of money, and we also knew what the impact would be if we were to have a judgment entered against us,” she relates. “And it just didn’t seem like it could be possibly fair to do that to people.” Under current law, health care providers are supposed to negotiate outof-network payments with state regulated insurance
companies. But providers can, and do, bill consumers directly and often take them to court if they don’t pay. House Bill 1174 would require providers to inform consumers about their rights, and would cap pay rates for out-of-network services. Critics of the measure argue that providers should be compensated at higher than in-network rates. Caitlin Westerson, director of legislative affairs for Colorado Consumer Health Initiative, says current regulations are failing
people who do their best to get care from in-network providers only to be hit with a bill much higher than what their insurance company agreed to pay. “If you owe 20 percent for emergency services, you’re thinking that that 20 percent is going to be based on the in-network rate,” she points out. “And if that rate then is suddenly as high as the doctor wants it to be, then 20 percent of that can be quite a lot.” As a law student with a background in community organizing, Williams says
she was well positioned to stand up for her rights, and she eventually won. She says most people can’t afford to spend six hours on the phone for months on end. “Because it was a pretty epic fight just to get this issue fixed,” she relates. “And I think there are a lot of consumers that don’t know that they have that option, or don’t have the energy to fight it.” HB 1174 is expected to be heard this week in the House Health and Insurance Committee.

5 Ways to Get Kids Excited About STEM Learning interests can open new possibilities for children to channel their interests into STEM careers. To build on any specific interests, such as robotics, the ocean or the universe, find activities in your area you can do with your child. For example, encourage your child to ask the zookeepers about certain animals he or she is interested in or research the lifecycle of a tree before taking a family camping trip.
By Desert Star Staff Many of the growing problems around the world, from famines and food insecurity to climate change and profound poverty, need the contributions of brilliant scientists, engineers, mathematicians and technologists. Encouraging children to explore skills and careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) can help build a better future. Whether a child pursues a formal career in STEM or just gains the background in related
skills, that experience and perspective can be important in stimulating change. Unlock the potential in your child with these tips from the learning experts at KinderCare:
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. — March is National Professional Social Work Month, and advocates are speaking out about a new campaign to “Elevate Social Work.” Social workers often are called in to help people who suffer from mental illness or drug addiction. In fact, statistics show one-third of social workers have been assaulted and 85 percent have been threatened or verbally abused. Angelo McClain, CEO of the National Association of Social Workers, supports a bill in Congress to require agencies to have a workplace-violence prevention plan and train workers on how to stay safe. “People don’t realize it, but social work is one of the 10 most dangerous professions,” McLain said. “Ninety-eight percent of our clients, we have good relationships with; we engage well with them. But there’s that percent of clients, given the right set of circumstances, can become violent. Some social workers have been murdered in the line of duty.” Groups also are fighting for higher salaries, because the average social worker
with a degree makes just $47,000-$49,000 a year - about $12,000 less than nurses or teachers. McClain said he supports a bill to be introduced in Congress that would raise the rate Medicare pays for socialworker visits. The measure is designed to attract more people to the profession and retain those already working. In California alone, thousands of jobs in social work remain unfilled. California’s new governor, Gavin Newsom, has voiced his support for programs to lower housing costs, help seniors stay in their homes, and expand subsidized preschool and day care throughout the state. Janlee Wong, director of the California chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, said he supports those moves. “This is something that social workers believe in because they see how it strengthens families and helps families with their income,” Wong said. He said he also would like to see a state law require those who call themselves social workers to hold a degree in the field.
1. Recognize people who advance STEM. When reading a book or watching a show featuring characters in STEM careers, such as doctors, mechanics or computer engineers, talk with your child about the characteristics those characters have in common, like a sense of curiosity or a
willingness to try an idea that may or may not work. Taking time to point out any family members or friends with similar jobs or hobbies can help your child picture himself or herself in STEM-related roles. 2. Identify outsidethe-box places STEM lives. Technology, for example, can be used to conduct research, draw or create music – things that don’t always occur in laboratories, research centers or tech companies. Using technology to pursue other
3. Focus on the process to instill confidence. Kids should understand failure is OK, so they’re more open to try something new and step outside their comfort zones. Encourage your child to explore his or her passions and interests more in-depth. Try to compliment desired behaviors, such as hard work, perseverance, grit and learning from mistakes, to teach your child success doesn’t come from always being right. 4. Emphasize STEMrelated skills. Curiosity, observation, problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication
are crucial in nearly all STEMfocused careers. By asking questions like “why?,” “how?” and “what if?,” and giving children the opportunity to explain the world around them instead of simply providing the answers, you can help spark curiosity and set the foundation for the development of more advanced skills. 5. Don’t limit your child to gender stereotypes. Ensure your children know they have the ability to do and try things that capture their attention and align with their passions. Try to refrain from identifying certain toys or games as things that are just for boys or girls. All children should be allowed to play with and explore trucks, dolls, dinosaurs, kitchen sets and tool boxes. Try to avoid setting boundaries that could unintentionally channel a child in a different direction, and make sure your child understands the vast possibilities his or her future holds. HOROSCOPES ARIES
Much of you has, should or will go into state of solitude and retreat for a while. This is food for you. For your Soul ruler, Mercury, is now retrograde and it’s calling you to a place of intelligent contemplation so you can reflect upon the past year and make plans in the quietest part of yourself for the future (when Sun enters Aries, the new spiritual year). This is a gift of time and preparation. Attend church or synagogue or a yoga or meditation retreat.
TAURUS You find yourself constantly amidst groups that need your ideas, practical direction, determined focus and your quiet, efficient and illuminating mind. Behind all your research, knowledge and teachings is the reality that it’s time to salvage the world and that much sacrifice must come forth from all of us to restore the Plan on Earth. When you lead, everyone follows.
GEMINI What do you think and feel is your gift as a Gemini and in the repair and reconstruction of the world? What do you want to be recognized for in this lifetime? What gifts of self will you offer to the New Group of World Servers whose task is to impress humanity with new ideals that will create the new culture and civilization? These and other ideas new and revelatory will occur in the Mercury retrograde.

An interesting situation is occurring. You now have the freedom to choose many paths. You can also choose to remain immovable and static. Your life becomes charged with possibilities and potentials. You will perceive complex information along with multiple levels of reality. You have entered the same brilliance Einstein saw and lived within. Ideas coming forth from the Mind of God to your mind.
LEO You might find that religious themes begin to form an important part of your life. All of a sudden altruism becomes your keynote and people begin to perceive you as philosophical, idealistic and visionary. You will have inspired insights that assist both the self and others. You imagine other lands, distant worlds. It’s good to build a boat, eat fish, swim in warm waters, talk with the devas.
VIRGO At times you find yourself functioning in other worlds. Compassion, empathy, kindheartedness and intuition unfold daily. Do not be concerned with not having adequate resources and try not to feel deprivation. There is no deprivation. There is only goodness, everywhere. God is always good. Some obligations and responsibilities call. Serve like a Bodhisattva.
LIBRA Perhaps you find yourself striving to harmonize past and present with significant others—friends, therapists, business colleagues, family and lover(s). Harmonizing all aspects of your life allows you to become more whole. It’s painful, the razor’s edge, honing our rough edges (karma). This is the design embedded within all relationships. What is your story? Who do you love? What do you fear? What soothes you?
SCORPIO As written previously this is a time set aside to care for your health. Know that you are the best there is always. Do you have a dream? A vision? Do not become disillusioned. This affects your health, which, with focus and care, you must rebuild time and again. Do not overwork or allow excessive worry. You never fail. There is no failure. Only experience, understanding and learning.
SAGITTARIUS There are times you may struggle with disappointment concerning perhaps relationships and professional endeavors. However, in the midst of this you will find a deep strain of inner joy, creativity and then, recognition in the world. At times you’ll feel great powers still to be expressed and long to do something significant. You realize you’re talented and

devices themselves and the networks they rely on to deliver unprecedented connectivity in every aspect of life. Watch for these tech trends on the rise in the coming year: Smart home devices: While devices that control the function and convenience of your home are hardly new, they’re becoming increasingly
sophisticated. Numerous voice assistant devices are now available, meaning you can take your pick of the features and brands you prefer. All function basically the same, allowing you to verbally control various smart devices throughout your home, as well as check the weather, make grocery lists, play music and more. In addition, security devices that manage access to your home and provide camera or video visibility when you’re away and more sophisticated smart devices like kitchen appliances are growing in popularity, too. Almost all these devices simply run over your home Wi-Fi network. 5G connectivity: You’ve likely heard about 3G and 4G, and maybe even about the latest network: 5G, or fifth generation. When 5G replaces 4G, often called LTE, as the fastest cellular connection available, you can expect faster uploads and downloads along with improved experiences for apps and services. March 6, 2019
very lucky. And that sacrifice plays a large part. You need a bit of peace and seclusion.
CAPRICORN You find you’re more curious than usual about the words you and others speak. You look beneath the surface of language to understand the complete picture. If one listens to communications through the question “What needs are being expressed here?”, the hidden psychological messages become clear. Keep writing, creating and doing mental/imaginative work. Confide in those who listen.
Deep within is a state of hidden joy. You need music and art and to plant many and various edible fruit, nut and berry trees. You have a sense of timing and intuition concerning when things should be done, with whom, when and where. These abilities will be more easily seen in the coming months. You can tap into unusual resources. There is always the supply you need. Share it generously.

PISCES You’re not an everyday sort of person. You don’t have the energy of Aries, steadfastness of Taurus, business acumen of Capricorn or the relating skills of Libra. You’re in touch with other levels with different values based on spiritual motivations. Know that in the darkest of times, you still have the ability to have gratitude. Unlike previous: enerations, the 5G experience will be fueled by a combination of technologies. In your home, at the office, at venues and airports, internet traffic will travel by a mix of other technologies including current and future versions of Wi-Fi. In fact, according to research by Cisco, cellular 5G networks will actually send vast amounts of additional data traffic over commercial WiFi networks that use the same technology as your router but on a grander scale. However, cellular carriers have to build out different infrastructure to beam 5G signals, so this process may take until 2020 or later. Wearable technology: The world of wearable technology has grown exponentially since the first fitness trackers came on the market a decade or more ago. Now, wearables come in virtually every shape and size, with interchangeable bands, customizable screens and more for maximum personalization. More notable, though, is the significant advances in function. Today’s wearables go far beyond counting steps or distance; you can create an entire wellness program

is proof that singing and dancing cats have longevity as well. “Cats” ended its long Broadway run June 19, 1997, after 6,138 performances. Now a touring production has come to the Pantages, bringing these Jellicle cats back to life yet again. “Cats” is based on “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot. Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, a cat lover himself, set Eliot’s whimsical poetry to music--and the result is “Cats.” The most memorable song in the show is “Memory” sung by Grizabela (Keri Rene Fuller), a once glamorous cat who ‘meows’ sadly about better days which are now only memories. As always it is a highlight. However, if you have seen “Cats” before you will notice something extraordinary is missing involving Asparagus, the old theatre cat (Timothy Gulan). Gus still sings briefly about the old days, but the clever Puccini like opera that made him a star in his youth has been completely removed in this touring production. “Cats” at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre, 6233 Hollywood Blvd. L.A. ends March 24. WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN
Dulé Hill Dazzles in “Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole” on Stage at the Geffen
Gisela Adisa as young Natalie Cole and Dulé Hill as her dad, Nat “King” Cole. Photo by Jeff Lorch Under the superb, masterful direction of Patricia McGregor, Dulé Hill, renders an extraordinary portrayal of one of America’s most famous entertainers. This story, written by Colman Domingo and McGregor is not what you might think it is. What it is not is a cheerful trip down the memory lane of Cole’s remarkable career where you will be reminded of his velvetthroated rendition of such iconic favorites as “Mona Lisa,” “Nature Boy,” “Route 66,” “Straighten Up and Fly Right,” “Stardust,” and, of course, “Unforgettable,” which would be a good adjective for this production. On the contrary, while you will hear most of his hit songs, Hill’s haunting performance takes us into the dark corners of his Cole’s fame, which had two faces. His weekly show on NBC Television, which was the only show with a black man as the star, contrasted to the behind the scenes humiliation he had to endure to please the network and the somewhat racist sponsors. To satisfy both entities, Cole submitted to having white powder splashed over his face to look less black. Not only did this national singing treasure have to tolerate the “white face” procedure, there were many times throughout his career that he had to enter and leave by the back door of the very same venue in which he was performing. Before going on camera, the camouflaging powder was applied by cheerful make-up artist Candy, played with good humor by Marcia Rodd, who also knows how to deliver a song. With a cigarette dangling out of her mouth, she would try to lessen the blow with wisecracks and coddling. This is a pivotal night for Cole, as it’s the official end of his half-hour prime time television spot, which had been on the air for thirteen months. Instead, the network
10
DesertSTAR
decided to switch his program to Saturday afternoon, which would be the death knell for the show. The producer, played by Byran Dobson is nervous because Peggy Lee, played Ruby Lewis, who also plays Betty Hutton, hasn’t shown up yet. Cole quips, “I’ve been known to carry a song on my own.” As this great singer gets ready for his final appearance, the stage manager, efficiently played by Brandon Ruiter, is busy getting the set ready. He does a lighting and sound check, and in short order, it becomes clear that the audience will be treated as the studio audience who are being primed to respond to the “Applause” sign that lights up at the appropriate time. His good friend Sammy Davis Jr., played by the amazingly talented singer and tap dancer Daniel J. Watts, who gives an over-the-top characterization. His job that evening is to warm up the audience before the program begins and to be a sympathetic ear for his friend. He clowns around and does some excellent impersonations, including the famous Marlon Brando mumble. The program is now live, and Cole becomes his professional, public image self – the easy going, friendly singer. Hill’s characterization as the “King,” captures the very essence of this legendary singer, mastering the tone, cadence, and distinct phrasing for which he was known. Under the tutelage of the late Gregory Hines, his tap dancing skills are awesome, and he and Sammy tear up the stage more than once in spirited routines. Now, remember, this is 1957 and commercials were live. The sponsor was Rheingold Beer, and a racist commercial is performed. One of the more offensive commercials he had to endure was for “Lights Out Cigarettes, “Made for the urban consumer.” Despite his internationally successful
career, Cole does not escape the wrath of the KKK, who burn a cross on his front lawn. Since this is the last night of his show, in addition to Peggy Lee and Betty Hutton, Cole also invited Eartha Kitt, reincarnated by sexy Gisela Adisa who also plays a young Natalie Cole. Cole and Hutton sing a fun duet, “Anything You Can Do,” followed by Hutton’s solo – “I Wish I Didn’t Love You.” What would be shocking today, the stage manager holds up a sign, which almost looks like a measuring stick, indicating the proper racial distance between each other they had to adhere. The action moves back and forth between the studio and Cole’s dressing room, nicely designed by Clint Ramos and Ryan Howell, with moody lighting design by Alan C. Edwards. Seated at his dressing table, Cole is furious about what the network is doing to him. Sammy agrees commenting, “Madison Avenue is afraid of the dark.” Now we move from naturalism to the surreal as the ghost of the singer’s mother, Perlina, appears. Played by powerhouse Zonya Love, who fills the stage with her booming, legit voice, she reminds her son of how much she loves him. Mom reminisces about how she started him on piano lessons because he was getting beaten up all the time, and how he met a young Billy Preston (Connor Amacio Matthews.) Back in the studio, Eartha Kitt finally shows up and does an over exaggerated rendition of “Santa Baby.” Throughout this last show, the anger inside of Cole begins to ooze out and his mind is in chaos. Encouraged by Davis who tells his friend, “Your silence is strangling you,” he begins to write a very emotional interpretation of “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter.” His delivery ranges from angrily screaming out the lyrics to reflect his feelings, to a March 6, 2019
tender ballad, which becomes a manifesto for expressing his deep seeded disgust of the treatment of blacks. This is a highly explosive, dramatic moment as the pent up anger finds an avenue of expression. An astounding tap-dance sequence ensues between him and Davis, which is truly a showstopper. Lest you think there are no laughs, well let me assure you there are, and they are embodied in the Christmas sequence in the manger where baby Jesus is Davis, and we hear “The Christmas Song.” It is about here that the ensemble sings the empowering “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the official black National Anthem during which people who know this, stand as a sign of respect. There is some light at the end of the tunnel when Cole’s manager (Bryan Dobson) tells him he is being considered for another show, but all they needed was a sponsor. Cole takes a stand making it clear that the days of having white powder splashed on his face are over. Dulé’s searing characterization of the painful lows of this famous singer’s life is intertwined with his excellent renditions of Cole’s iconic musical songbook. Between he and the rest of the company, we get to hear other familiar selections from his famous repertoire including, “Caroling, Caroling,” “Orange
Colored Sky, “Blueberry Hill,” and “Me and My Shadow.”
Perhaps after seeing McGregor’s tightly directed production, your personal lights will be turned on. Maybe you will decide to become an activist to try to counter these turbulent times in which we are living and in some not so subtle ways, mirror the great Nat “King” Cole’s personal struggle with racism so many decades ago. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatres Critics Association When one is in Palm Springs, and one is a theatergoer who loves musicals, the Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) is one of the venues you should check out. The Layne family now in their 21st year of presenting theatrical productions both musicals, as well as comedies and dramas, is currently presenting the
musical “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” It’s a colorful high energy, boot-stomping, hoot of a production that features dancers, singers, and sparkling costumes that light up the stage, courtesy of resident costume designerextraordinaire Derik Shopinski. The “Whorehouse” story is a bit dated these days having debuted on Broadway 41 years ago, but subsequent revival productions have judiciously cleaned-up the bawdiness
and the objections to the lyrics and titillating dialogue to a point where one doesn’t see references to it as being “Banned in Boston” or “ the work of the Devil” anymore. Based on the true story about the state of Texas’ famous “Chicken Ranch” brothel, Writer Larry L. King wrote the libretto with Peter Masterson, with music and lyrics supplied by Carol Hall. The production is directed by Se Layne and features 33 actor, singer, dancers, plus a four-piece orchestra under the baton of Musical Director and pianist Steven Smith; includes David Bronson on Drums, Larry Holloway on Bass, and John Pagels on guitar. Thirty-three performers on the PCT stage could be a recipe for classic gridlock both on and off the
By Desert Star Staff (SACRAMENTO – CA) – Monday, March 4, 2019, Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) proudly presented Indio resident and esteemed community leader, Beatriz “Bea” Gonzalez, as the 56th Assembly District’s 2019 Woman of the Year recipient. “It is my great privilege to be able to bestow this honor on such a well deserving recipient as Beatriz Gonzalez. Bea is a spectacular person, much beloved and well known in our community for her big personality and even bigger heart. She is a fierce advocate and consummate volunteer. She has dedicated her career growing Coachella Valley Unified School District’s Expanded Learning After School Programs where she has gone above and beyond, building partnerships, and leveraging resources to ensure that her students have every possible opportunity to succeed,” shared Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia. For nearly two decades,
Beatriz has served as the Coachella Valley Unified School District’s District Coordinator of Expanded Learning After School Programs. In this capacity, she ensures the quality programming for twenty-one school sites. Often these efforts intersect with Assemblymember Garcia’s policy initiatives, for example, his work with the National Compadres/Comadres Network to help deter the schools to prison pipeline through cultural healing and mentorship. In partnership with the National Compadres/ Comadres Network, Beatriz has been able to utilize Prop 47 dollars to implement La Cultura Cura model programmings such as the Joven Noble and Xinachtli in our local schools. Last year, the Riverside County Latino Commission dedicated “Bea’s House” Girl’s Youth Treatment Facility; in recognition of her work to promote mental wellness and healing. This is the first and only local facility of its nature proving service to girls ages thirteen to seventeen and a half who are
suffering from mental health and substance youth disorders. Beatriz currently serves on the following boards; Riverside University Health Care Systems Behavioral Health Commission; Riverside County Desert Behavioral Health Advisory Board; Riverside County Latino Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Inc.; American Cancer Society- Relay For Life Committee; Valley Missionary Program; and the Regional Access Program Foundation. Above all else, Beatriz considers being a mother to be her greatest accomplishment, and she feels very blessed to have the love and full support of her two children, Monique and Matthew. “I am truly humbled and honored to be recognized by Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, someone who I greatly respect and admire. All I want to do is see our community to grow and flourish. This is why I am constantly looking for avenues to invest in our students and their capacity as leaders. I truly appreciate

stage. However, Director Layne nicely avoids those pitfalls and keeps the action going. The choreography wisely created by Anthony Nannini is both energetic and audience-pleasing without straining the dancing skills of performers who have reached ‘a certain age.’ There is no way I can list a cast of thirty-three performers due to a lack of space. However, there are always standouts who are: Jaci Davis as Miss Mona Stangley. Ms. Davis is an experienced leading lady who knows her way around a musical stage who also knocked the socks of PCT audiences in last year’s production of “Gypsy,” starring as Mama Rose. Kimberly Cole as Jewel; Alan Berry as C J Scruggs, Matt Sambrano as Rufus
Poindexter; Ron Coronado as Melvin P. Thorpe; Don Kelley as the Sheriff: Paul Grant as Senator Wingwoah; Virginia Sullick as Doatsy Mae, and Allegra Angelo as Ginger. Provide solid support. In the technical department led by Director Layne, the excellent set design by Neil Kapple allows for plenty of space for the huge cast to perform without bumping into one another. The lighting is designed by the redoubtable JW Layne, resident set designer and theatre company co-artistic director. “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” performs at the Palm Canyon Theatre through March 10, 2019. my parents for instilling in me the importance of serving others and thank my children, Monique, and Matthew, for always being by my side. I am appreciative of everyone who donates their time and works tirelessly to make our community a better place,” said Beatriz Gonzalez. Every year as part of
Women’s History Month, the California Legislative Women’s Caucus sponsors the Woman of the Year awards to recognize women who have made a positive impact in our lives and our communities. This afternoon, Beatriz joined other distinguished honorees from across the state.

Classic Rock, Emerging Heroes Excel on New Titles with his reworking of “With A Little Help From My Friends matching his strong baritone with the emotive soprano of Beth Hart. “The Bookends is a masterful album from start to finish. Information: MascotLabelGroup.com.
A trio of outstanding collections is available now, including a newly-issued vinyl box set featuring The Zombies and new albums from Eric Gales and Nick Waterhouse. Artist: The Zombies Title: The Complete Studio Recordings (Varèse Sarabande Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Zombies, the Hollies Tell me more: With The Zombies set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this month. There is no time better than the present to grab a copy of a particular box set that features both U.S. studio albums, two great compilations as well as a
bonus collection of rare singles and United Kingdom-only album tracks. “The Complete Studio Recordings features five LPs are on 180-gram vinyl and proves to be the most comprehensive vinyl collection of The Zombies’ ‘60s recordings ever gathered together. The packaging is as beautiful as the sound, and all five albums are housed in a box to help protect and treasure this amazing title. As for songs, casual rock fans will immediately appreciate the sound of timeless hits such “She’s Not There, “Tell Her No and “Time of the Season, while discerning fans will be immersed in each and every one of the 60+ cuts. The
blend of R& B, jazz, and rock celebrated in sophisticated and groundbreaking recordings that made the British quintet, so original from their formation in the early ‘60s is entirely on display via this incredible collection. Artist: Eric Gales Title: The Bookends (Mascot Label Group) You might like if you enjoy: Gary Clark Jr., Doyle Bramhall II, Beth Hart, Gary Clark Jr. Tell me more: Singersongwriter/guitar virtuoso Eric Gales’ latest album “The Bookends will appeal to fans of blues-rock, jaw-dropping
guitar work, and top-tier songcraft. The Memphis, Tennessee native’s 11-track disc boasts some style-rich moodscapes. “Something’s Gotta Give (featuring guest B. Slade) features a breezy intro with acoustic guitar forming the backdrop before the song excels via a soulful-pop funk run. The tender R&B-flavored “Southpaw Serenade (with guest Doyle Bramhall II) builds to an explosive finale; the powerful “Reaching For A Change is a riff-rock bluesrock blaster with introspective lyrics that speak of life’s uncertain journey and the quest to beat the hard times and fight the pain. Gales also revisits one of the Beatles’ great originals
Artist: Nick Waterhouse Title: Nick Waterhouse (Innovative Leisure) You might like if you enjoy: JD McPherson, Dean Martin Tell me more: Retro sounds of the mid-1950s are everywhere on the self-titled album from Nick Waterhouse. A listen through the 11-track LP is a trip to a bygone era even while the music surges with the energy and feel of a modern-day release. The disc has a super cool vibe as evidenced by the ‘60s-mining R&B of “By Heart and “I Feel An Urge Coming On, rockabilly-meets-garage rock of “Song For Winners, and Rhythm ‘n’ Blues of “Black Glass. The swinging “Wreck The Rod is another standout, complete with blasting horns, the pounding piano, and Waterhouse’s wonderful baritone growl. Environmental Groups Question GOP Water-Pollution Credit Bill By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. – A bill introduced this week by Republican legislators that would create a clearinghouse between fixed-source polluters and water-pollution credit generators in Wisconsin is drawing questions from some environmental groups. The bill introduced Tuesday would streamline the state’s water-pollution credittrading system. LRB-1244 would create a clearinghouse that would enter into contracts with credit generators and assume liability for the viability of their credits. Some environmental groups insist they want more specifics on how it would work. Bill Davis, director of Wisconsin’s John Muir Chapter of the Sierra Club, thinks so far, the way the bill is worded is too vague. “The language in there that seems to me read one way would allow trades to happen
anywhere on the Wisconsin River, which to me is too big a stretch,” Davis observed. “So, in other words, the increased discharge in one place is not going to see the benefit of the decrease in other places.” The bill’s supporters, which include some environmental groups, have said the new system also could provide a source of revenue for farmers and improve water quality. Gov. Tony Evers has declared 2019 the Year of Clean Drinking Water. Davis said he’d like to support the idea. But for now, he wants to see if there will be safeguards in place for heavy polluters who might just opt for trading credits instead of curbing their polluting practices, or making sure heavy polluters aren’t concentrated in one area. “For example, if you get two or three people who are increasing their discharge,
and they’re very close to each other – and the people who are decreasing their discharge are in other places – we want to make sure there are no negative impacts in that water body, near those increased changes,” Davis explained.
By Desert Star Staff BALTIMORE – It’s an event that organizers hope many in Washington, D.C., can watch and learn from. But the ultimate goal of this weekend’s Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl in Baltimore is to help train students before they enter the workforce on how to work through complex moral issues. This year, 36 teams will face off, as part of the 2019 Annual Conference of the
Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. The cases students will handle cover topics in business, journalism, medicine – and there’s a focus on ageism. Nancy Carr, associate state director of communications with AARP Maryland, says that’s what prompted her organization to sponsor the Ethics Bowl. “So, we’re really encouraged that young people,
these college students, are training to become ethical, thoughtful, deliberate decision-makers and future advocates,” says Carr. Students will have to balance objectives related to employment and educational opportunities, and examine representations of age in motion pictures. The Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl National Competition begins 7:30 p.m. on Saturday
at the Hyatt Regency Inner Harbor in Baltimore. It continues through Sunday. One emphasis of the competition is on collegiality in the dialogue and debate – something Carr says she hopes to see more of from today’s leaders. “And so, it’s in that spirit that we are encouraging a return to civilized, intelligent discourse about the many critical issues of the day,”
says Carr. “And you know, sometimes that seem to be lacking – you know, just down the road, in DC and other places.” Students will be judged on their ability to understand the facts of a case and articulate the ethical principles involved. They’ll need to present an effective argument on how the case should be resolved and respond effectively to challenges.
By Desert Star Staff At least 23 people have died, and multiple others have been hurt in several large tornadoes that have lashed parts of Alabama and Georgia, tearing off roofs, uprooting trees, and leaving a grim trail of destruction. An eight-year-old girl
and at least 22 other people fell victim to a tornado that swept through Lee County, Alabama on Sunday, the county sheriff has confirmed. He did not specify the exact causes of their deaths. Several tornadoes descended on Alabama and Georgia, causing extensive
damage to houses and infrastructure, and leaving some 35,000 people in both states without power. Large-scale search and rescue operations have been launched in Lee County, where officials reported multiple injuries. The spokesperson for
Lee County Emergency Management Rita Smith said that some 150 first responders were dispatched to help the victims and search for survivors. “They are doing a phenomenal job. Sadly, we know that we have two known, confirmed fatalities and many,
many injuries,” she told AP. Smith urged residents to stay clear of the roads and the area affected by the storm. The National Weather Service issued a series of tornado warnings along the Georgia-Alabama border on Sunday.
LRB-1244 authorizes a market-based framework to facilitate more water-quality trades in Wisconsin. (Greyerbaby/Pixabay) Wisconsin law currently divides polluters into two classes: so-called point sources, such as municipal sewage treatment plants that discharge pollutants directly into the environment, and nonpoint sources,
such as farms that pollute through runoff. In 2010, the Department of Natural Resources imposed tougher phosphorus restrictions on point-source polluters.

hether you’re new to hosting or simply looking for ideas to make Easter entertaining easier than ever, there are plenty of ways to save time and stress in the kitchen. How to Heat a Frozen Ham Many frozen hams are fully cooked and can be served as soon as they’re properly thawed, which is an ideal solution for a casual brunch with mini sandwiches on the menu. However, if you’re serving an elegant holiday dinner, you’re more likely to prefer a warm centerpiece dish. A fully cooked ham is still a time-saving option; you’ll just need to allot time to heat it in the oven once it’s thawed. Start by thawing a fully cooked ham in the refrigerator for 24-48 hours. To keep your ham extra moist, always put the cut-side down. You might also consider placing a baking rack in the pan and adding a quarter-inch of water before placing the ham on the rack. )RU D VSLUDO FXW ERQH LQ KDP KHDW WKH RYHQ WR ) 5HPRYH KDP IURP ¿OP DQG IRLO 3ODFH ham cut-side down on a raised edge baking pan lined with foil. Edgy Drama on Stage at Dezart Performs in Palm Springs
(L-R) Sean Timothy Brown, Bianca Stoker, David Youse and Alexana Thomas in Dezart Performs’ production of “White Guy On The Bus.” Photo by David A. Lee. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association The last great hope for humanity to survive its innate folly has been The United States of America. We created a system of government two hundred and forty years ago the world has come to know as American democracy. Here the people governed themselves - in a manner of speaking - with a Constitution that guarantees that all citizens are equal under the law. The challenge over the years of our existence has been for some people to accept that precept. The award-winning Palm Springs-based Dezart Performs theatre company is currently staging a powerful drama that addresses what some have called America’s “original sin of Slavery” that has morphed into what is now referred to as America’s racial divide. And that is only the “Black/White “issue” plaguing our society. We have always been a nation with multicultural immigrant roots. There is strength in our diversity. “White Guy on the Bus”, written by Bruce Graham, is deftly directed by Michael Shaw. It’s is a play about power and revenge that
attempts to pierce the veil of institutionalized racism in an effort shock our society into asking all of us to appeal to our better angels, which by the way, is long, long overdue. The story in short, is set in the upscale Main Line section of Philadelphia and on a city public bus that centers around two couples: Ray, a wealthy businessman (a flatout sensational performance by David Youse) and his wife Roz (Alexana Thomas) a lady who tells it as she sees and lives it, is strongly played by Ms. Thomas. Desiree Clarke plays Shatique, the AfricanAmerican girl on the bus who Ray befriends as they ride to work every morning. Ms. Clarke delivers a finely nuanced dramatic performance (patrons may recall seeing her in comedy roles at Dezart). Sean Timothy Brown, as Ray’s surrogate son Christopher and Bianca Stoker as Christopher’s wife Molly, bring the younger people’s point of view to this intentionally dark production. Playwright Graham doesn’t sugarcoat his drama’s language. It’s raw at times but the issues are compelling and deserving of the audiences’ attention. However, there will be no spoiler alerts from me here. To do so, would diminish the effect of Mr. Graham,s tautly written and professionally performed play. One will
