Brothers Serving Together Continue “We Build, We Fight” Seabee tradition By Rick Burke, Navy Office of Community Outreach PORT HUENEME, Calif. “We Build, We Fight” has been the motto of the U. S. Navy’s Construction Force, known as the “Seabees,” for more than seven decades. The Navy

Seabees are an elite group of personnel trained in both combat and the craft skills of the construction industry. Petty Officer 3rd Class Stephen Tritsch and Construction man Apprentice Christopher Tritsch, brothers

California declares state of emergency after 1st coronavirus death

US House passes $8.3bn emergency funding bill By Desert Star Staff California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency over the deadly coronavirus, soon after local officials confirmed the state’s first death from the illness, which has infected more than 50 people in 12 counties. With California’s first death announced on Wednesday, and six new cases arising in the last 48 hours, the emergency declaration could see an influx of emergency funds set aside by Congress rush into the state – with the governor telling reporters on Tuesday there was “always... the opportunity to do

a declaration of emergency” to secure “additional resources.” “The State of California is deploying every level of government to help identify cases and slow the spread of this coronavirus,” Newsom said at a press conference, noting that the state of emergency would include provisions against price-gouging for vital medical supplies. Los Angeles County declared its own public health emergency earlier on Wednesday, after the number of cases in the area rose to seven, including the six newly confirmed patients. None of

Supervisor Kathryn Barger told reporters. “We need every tool at our disposal.”

CVRep Implements Additional Procedures Throughout All Public Spaces By Desert Star Staff Cathedral City, CA. - News of the Coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19, has garnered headlines throughout the world. While the Coachella Valley has no known cases of this pandemic virus, Coachella Valley Repertory (CVRep) has announced new protocols to reduce the spread of this, or any, possible virus. Board of Directors president Joe Giarrusso announced CVRep’s institution of additional safety and cleaning protocols. “It’s not here. There are no known cases of the Coronavirus in the Coachella Valley. We are taking this action as an added measure of safety and implementing sanitary procedures far beyond what’s required,” said Giarrusso. CVRep will be adding five hand sanitizing stations throughout the theatre. In addition, the theatre, seating and all public areas are being sanitized before and between

performances with medical grade disinfectant products. Said Giarrusso, “We will continue to monitor the spread of this disease. No one is telling us do this or do that. We highly value the health and well-being of our patrons, volunteers and team members. And, we want to stop something before it has a chance to start. I believe that this proactive approach will help protect us all.” James Robb, MD, FCAP, a professor of pathology at UCSD, outlined individual precautionary measures: • Don’t shake hands – use a fist bump, a bow or an elbow bump • Use your knuckle to touch light switches, elevator buttons, etc. Lift the handle at the gas pump using a paper towel or a disposable glove • Open doors with your closed fist or hip – do not grasp the handle with your hand – especially in bathrooms or commercial buildings

• Use disinfectant wipes at the stores when available before using the cart • Wash hands with warm water and soap for 10-20 seconds and/or use a greater than 60% alcohol-based sanitizer whenever you return home from any activity that involves locations where other people have been • Keep a bottle of sanitizer available at each of your home’s entrances and in your car • If possible, cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue and discard. Use your elbow only if you must, as clothing will contain infectious virus that can be passed on for up to a week (or more) • For more information on the Coronavirus, confirmed cases and other health information, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at cdc.gov/coronavirus. Elizabeth Warren suspends 2020 campaign after Super Tuesday failure

By Desert Star Staff Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has dropped out of the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. The candidate failed to win even her home state on a disappointing Super Tuesday. Warren released a statement via Twitter on Thursday vowing to continue the “righteous fight,” and shared a transcript of a call with her staff in a Medium post. While the text was heavy on the self-congratulatory platitudes, an endorsement

of any other candidate was conspicuously absent. Twitter: Our work continues, the fight goes on, and big dreams never die. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. — Elizabeth Warren Elizabeth “Pocahontas” Warren, who was going nowhere except into Mini Mike’s head, just dropped out of the Democrat Primary... THREE DAYS TOO LATE. She cost Crazy Bernie, at least, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Texas. Probably

cost him the nomination! Came in third in Mass. — Donald J. Trump Speaking to the press outside her home after confirming her withdrawal from the 2020 race, Warren refused to endorse another candidate: “Let’s take a deep breath and spend a little time on that,” she said. “We don’t have to decide right now.” The ex-candidate blamed her failure to win any primaries, including in her home state, on the existence of “two lanes” in the race - a

“moderate” lane occupied by Biden, and a “progressive” lane occupied by Sanders - and no room for her. Her inability to win a single state in the 14-primary Super Tuesday contest is likely to have triggered her decision to drop out. She has collected a total of 65 delegates so far, but her failure to place within the top two in Massachusetts – or win any other state – cast a long shadow over the rest of the primary. The senator’s departure comes within a week of former South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg, Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar, and former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg leaving the race and endorsing former vice president Joe Biden. Given that Warren has been accused of acting as a ‘spoiler’ to divert votes from progressive Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, all eyes will certainly be watching to see who she endorses after officially leaving the race. Should Warren throw her support behind Biden, she’d likely be handing him her

delegates as well. Delegates for dropped-out candidates become ‘free agents’ at the party convention, but often join with whoever their candidate endorses. A late February poll suggested 40 percent of Warren’s supporters would unite behind Sanders, who is trailing Biden in delegates after the former vice president made an unlikely comeback on Tuesday. The Democratic Socialist started off the primary season strong, winning the first three states, only to see Biden overtake him with the help of voters in the south. President Donald Trump weighed in on Warren’s departure, noting that she was “going nowhere except into Mini Mike [Bloomberg]’s head” and pointing out she cost “Crazy Bernie” Sanders three states - and possibly the nomination. However, while Biden’s lead over Sanders was very close in several of the states he won, it’s not clear all Warren’s supporters would have jumped ship to Sanders.

When it comes to tax season, preparation is key to easing anxiety, according to experts. “Tax season can be stressful for many people, but it’s also an opportunity to strengthen your financial plan,” says Michael Corr, chief estate and business planning strategist, Lincoln Financial Advisors, National Planning Team. “The good news is that there are some simple ways to manage the process.” To weather the 2020 tax season, Corr offers these tips: Get the 411: Whether

The jobs of some of the Seabees today have remained unchanged since World War II when the Seabees paved the 10,000-mile road to victory for the allies in the Pacific and in Europe, said Lara Godbille, director of the U.S. Navy Seabee Museum. “I enjoy being around a tight-knit community,” Stephen Tritsch said. “The camaraderie is like no other, we take care of one another and always have each other’s back.” “As a Seabee, the people are really fun to work with,” Christopher Tritsch added. “I always liked construction work, and this job was a perfect fit.” Seabees have served in all American conflicts for nearly 80 years. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Virginia Waring International Piano Competition Thirty Sixth Anniversary Gala was held on Saturday, February 29th. The theme for the Gala was Paris at Midnight, an evening of Music and OOH LA LA. Hundreds of guests arrived at the Westin Mission Hills Resort and Spa Celebrity Ballroom. This Gala fundraiser benefits the community and education outreach programs of the Waring International Piano Competition. Many guests arrived at the cocktail hour in music-themed wear such as French tams, feathered boas and hats, and musical themed ties and shirts. The evening’s entertainment started off with performances by Cabaret Versatile. Girls

arrived for the first performance in white costumes with white feathers dancing and singing, I Love Paris. The other returns were done in red costumes with feather headdresses. They danced and sang while performing a lot of acrobatic moves and kept the theme going doing the CanCan dance by lifting their fancy skirts in Paris Cabaret Style. The audience took part by clapping to the music as they performed. Gala Chair and Emcee Peter Dout of KESQ News greeted the guests and thanked them for coming to support the Waring International Piano Competition. Cravens and Woodson brought Jan and Brian Harnik to the stage to award them the 2020 Life Time Achievement Award for all they do. The Harniks both spoke to the crowd and felt so honored by this award. Chad Mayes read a proclamation in their honor. This couple is beloved around the Desert for their commitment to a lot of charities and the Arts with their time and talent. Dinner was served, and the next program on the agenda was the 2nd place winner in the 2019 competition, 13-yearold Hudson Ragins. I wonder how many people remember what they were doing at 13, and this young man blew away

the audience with his mastery of the piano with standing applause. There was a raise in your paddle fundraiser that saw many guests donate to this event before the next performance. The 2007 2nd place Competition winner, Vijay Venkatesh, and Eva Shaumkell performed an amazing piano duet with selections for Carnival of the Animals. Another standing ovation for this duo. The final performance was the Palm Desert High School Chamber singers. It looked like there were over 50 young voices led by Michale Cundari and accompanied by Pianist Paul Cracchiolo. There were closing remarks by Pater Daut and JoAnn Wellner before the dance floor was opened to the guests to end a Paris

They expose children to classical music; many have never heard or piano playing. Music inspires kids to the Arts when schools no longer have that curriculum in their classes. Music can enrich the lives of our youth and everyone as a means to conversation and confidence in our children that need that in today’s world. Tom Hanks Brings Mr. Rodgers to Life on Screen

While Tom Hanks didn’t take home an Oscar for his portrayal as Fred Rogers in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” he turned in a warm, winning performance that captured the essence of TV’s extraordinary father figure “Mr. Rodgers.” Fred Rogers, born March 20, 1928, was not only a writer, musician, and producer for his children’s show “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood” he was also an ordained Presbyterian minister. And while his program reached countless thousands of children, his warm presentation made each child feel as if he were speaking to them on an individual basis. When he walked in and donned his red sweater, he invited the children to join him and be his neighbor...and they did. The film “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” directed by Marielle Heller (“Can You Ever Forgive Me” and “Diary of a Teenage Girl”) is based on a relationship between Mr. Rogers and

Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) who is assigned to write a feature on Mr. Rogers for Esquire by his editor (Christine Lahti). Usually, Vogel digs up unflattering truths about his subjects, but Mr. Rogers turns out to be too good to be true. Lloyd’s character is loosely based on journalist Tom Junod who wrote a cover story on Rogers in 1998 for Esquire. This led to a friendship that lasted until Fred Rogers’ death in 2003. However, unlike Lloyd in the film, Junod did not have an estranged relationship with his father. This aspect of the story was invented by screenwriters Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue. As the film begins, we meet Lloyd and his wife (Susan Kelechi Watson), who are the parents of a baby boy. Trouble erupts when they attend his sister’s wedding because his father Jerry (Chris Cooper) is one of the guests. Jerry abandoned his family years ago, and now suddenly, he is back in their lives. At the reception, Jerry tries to talk with his son, but

Lloyd wants nothing to do with him. This eventually leads to a fistfight and a black eye. When Lloyd shows up at Mr. Roger’s Pittsburgh studio for his interview, Fred gently questions him about his eye. He also skillfully keeps their conversations light and nonconfrontational. Over time a genuine friendship is formed between these two men. In the film, Lloyd conducts

portions of his interview on the set of Mr. Rogers’s show. This is fun because we get to meet and enjoy the many little puppets Mr. Rogers created like Daniel Tiger and King Friday XIII. Tom Hanks is warm and believable as Fred Rogers, and it is interesting to note that according to Fred’s wife, Mr. Roger’s enjoyed Tom Hanks as an actor. Hence, it is perfect

that Tom was able to bring Mr. Rodger’s to life once again in this thoroughly enjoyable film. “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” is rated PG 13 for some durable thematic material, a brief fight, and some mild language. This genuinely charming film is now available on DVD and Blu ray and has a running time of 1 hour, 40 minutes.

Hollywood Revisited is a show of song and dance in costumes from movies of yesteryear. Greg Schreiner is the owner of over 500 Hollywood movie costumes. He brings fabulous singers and dancers to the stage in uniforms worn by very famous movie stars. He started buying his collection in 1979 and continues to purchase costumes as they come available. He tells about the designer, the gown and the singer who is wearing the outfit. My favorite was a replica Marilyn Monroe gown when she sang

for the president, and the real dress sold for 5.6 million dollars. Gowns were worn by Ann Miller, Mitzi Gaynor, Carol Burnett, Cher, George Chakeris, Tony Curtis, Ginger Rodgers, Glenn Close, and even John Travolta. These are the gowns of the golden age of Hollywood when studios usually had only one designer per movie. Schreiner said his favorites are probably his Marily Monroe collection, but he loves them all. The performers again came out in the lobby to greet the guests wearing the fabulous gowns by the stars. The amazingly talented singers were Sam Burnside, Joshua Finkel, Jill Marie Burke, and Elisa Surmont.

Ridgecrest Native Serves at U.S. Navy’s “Secret City” in the Mojave Desert

By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class David R. Finley Jr., Navy Office of Community Outreach CHINA LAKE, Calif. - Margo Allen, a native of Ridgecrest, California, plays a crucial role in supporting the Navy’s research, testing, and evaluation of cuttingedge weapons systems for today’s sailors. Allen is the base public affairs officer serving at Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake, known as “Secret City.” “A vast weapons testing and training range operated by the U.S. Navy in California’s Mojave Desert, this location is where military and civilian personnel developed or tested nearly every significant airborne weapon system since 1943,” said NAWS China Lake public affairs officer, Margo Allen. As the base public affairs officer, Allen is responsible for informing the public of the Navy’s mission at NAWS China Lake. “My favorite part of this job is the chance to meet a wide variety of people and inform them of the outstanding, mission-critical work that is done on the installation,” Allen said. Allen is a 1993 Burroughs High School graduate. According to Allen, the values required to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Ridgecrest. “The biggest thing that I learned growing up here in Ridgecrest was that we had an important Navy base,” Allen said. “I knew growing up that I wanted to be a part of this important mission.” NAWS China Lake is

located in the Western Mojave Desert region of California, approximately 150 miles north of Los Angeles. The installation is the Navy’s most significant single piece of real estate, representing 85 percent of the Navy’s land for Research, Development, Acquisition, Test, and Evaluation (RDAT&E) use and 38 percent of the Navy’s land holdings worldwide. In total, its two ranges and leading site cover more than 1.1 million acres, an area larger than the state of Rhode Island. Operating a facility as large as China Lake is a monumental task, considering 19,600 square miles of restricted and controlled airspace makes up 12 percent of California’s total airspace. Compounding the challenge is the diverse nature of the operations that include weapons testing and evaluation in air and ground ranges, research and development in highly sophisticated laboratories, and numerous science and technology projects ranging from sensors to chemical and material systems. The workforce at China Lake is a combination of military, civilians, and contractors employed across many different commands focused on researching and evaluating cutting edge technological systems, and training of Navy personnel preparing for combat in areas around the world. China Lake and the men and women who serve there play a key role in the Navy’s broader mission of protecting American interests on the world’s oceans. According to Navy officials, maintaining maritime

superiority is a vital part of a Navy that is present today and prepared for tomorrow. The impact affects Americans and their interests around the world, as more than 70 percent of the Earth is covered by water, and 90 percent of all trade travels by sea. The foundation of the Navy the nation needs includes a focus on warfighting, warfighters, and the future of the fighting force. “I am confident that we will maximize the Navy we have today while delivering the Navy that our nation will rely upon tomorrow,” said Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations. “We will do so with urgency. Our fleet will be a potent, formidable force that competes around the world every day, deterring those who would challenge us while reassuring our allies and partners.” Though there are many ways to earn distinction in a command, community, and career, Allen is most proud of being able to maintain excellent relationships with the community and sharing our stories and accomplishments with the public. “That has been my goal since I became involved in public affairs,” Allen said. “It has been a long time coming and took a lot of hard work.” Allen has military ties with family members who have previously served and is honored to carry on the family tradition. “My dad was Air Force, and I served 14 years in the Air Force and Air National Guard,” said Allen. “We have a family history of service. To me, it means being

Photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Bradley Gee able to do my small part in ensuring our continued liberties and freedoms.” As a member of the U.S. Navy, Allen, as well as others at the command, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs,

and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations to follow. “Working for the Navy means supporting those who serve and ensuring our traditions continue,” Allen said. Facebook: https://www. facebook.com/NavyOutreach

Experts Weigh In: Why Did Biden Win Maine?

By Desert Star Staff ORONO, Maine -- Maine was the closest race of the Democratic Party presidential primaries on Super Tuesday, with former Vice President Joe Biden narrowly beating Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont in a surprising victory. Until Monday, Sanders was heavily projected to win the state, which he won against Hillary Clinton in 2016. Professor Sandy Maisel at Colby College says one big change is that Maine switched from being a caucus state in 2016 to a primary state this year. “We know in caucuses the most active, most concerned, most ideological people are who turn out to vote,” he points out. “It should surprise nobody that a candidate like Sen. Sanders would do better in caucuses than he would do in primary states.” In caucuses, party voters meet and make their case for their preferred candidate, and vote at the end of the meeting. In primaries, people

simply cast ballots. So, since more moderates likely voted in the Maine primary on Tuesday, Maisel thinks this gave Biden a boost. University of Maine political science professor Mark Brewer notes that Democratic voters in Maine and across the country unified around the need to beat President Donald Trump. Brewer also thinks voters banded together for another reason. “For a vast majority of Democrats, they wanted an alternative besides Bernie, and we saw an overwhelming movement of non-Bernie Democrats towards Joe Biden,” he points out. Maisel maintains three factors tend to influence elections: a campaign’s organization, paid media or advertising, and what he calls “earned media,” or news that goes a candidate’s way. In Biden’s case, his strong performance in South Carolina and endorsements from former candidates Pete

Former Vice President Joe Biden didn’t even campaign in Maine, yet narrowly won the state in the Democratic presidential primary on Super Tuesday. (JoeBiden.com) Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar created an unprecedented level of earned media. “The takeaway that I get from the whole Super Tuesday is the power of earned media,” Maisel states.

“He had no organization on the ground, and he hadn’t campaigned extensively in any of the Super Tuesday states, hadn’t been in Maine at all. There’s no other explanation.” Biden narrowly won Maine

by about one percentage point over Sanders, with around 34% of the vote. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts came in third with close to 16%.

Super Tuesday round-up: Biden surges, Sanders takes the top prize By Desert Star Staff The stage looks set for a drawn-out Democratic contest between an establishment centrist and a socialist agitator after Super Tuesday voting saw Joe Biden sweep the south. At the same time, Bernie Sanders claimed the top prize in California. The biggest voting day in the Democrats’ primary calendar, Super Tuesday brings in vote tallies from 14 states, as well as from American Samoa. It has a significant impact on shaping the race to nab the party nomination. So, what happened, and what does it all mean? Biden’s (finally) in the game After a poor showing in early states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada, former VP Joe Biden’s campaign had been on life support until his South Carolina primary win last week. That victory finally offered him the ‘Joe-mentum’ he needed heading into Super Tuesday – and it certainly seems to have made an impact. There was more at work

than just a handy win in the Palmetto State to set Biden up for Tuesday’s success, however. On the eve of the big day, two fellow moderates, Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar dropped out of the race and threw their support (and voters) behind Biden. Meanwhile, semiprogressive Elizabeth Warren, who holds little chance of securing the nomination, stayed in the race in what Sanders’ voters felt looked suspiciously like a party effort to split the progressive vote and damage the democratic socialist. By Wednesday morning, Warren was reportedly “talking to her team” about whether or not to continue on in the race. The slew of new endorsements reportedly came at the urging of former President Barack Obama, who was the “quiet hand” behind the rapidly moving effort by centrist Democrats to coalesce around their man Biden. He also picked up endorsements from the likes of former FBI director James Comey and ex-CIA chief John Brennan, as well as

former national security adviser Susan Rice and former UN Ambassador Samantha Power. Revived by the wave of establishment approval, Biden took Alabama, Arkansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia, shooting him into first place in the everchanging and all-important delegate count. He also racked up surprise victories in Minnesota and Massachusetts and is expected to win in Maine, too, though the final tally has not yet been announced. Sanders secures top prize California With Biden riding high on a sudden spurt of voter enthusiasm, Sanders missed his opportunity to acquire a substantial lead in the delegate count. Instead of locking in a lead for the Vermont senator, Super Tuesday turned the Democratic contest into a two-man race – and a close one at that. Lower than hoped-for turnout by young voters in the southern states, who often favor Sanders, also seems

to have hurt his campaign. Still, as expected, Sanders managed to capture the night’s top prize, winning easily in California. He also pulled off victories in his home state of Vermont, as well as in Colorado and Utah, keeping him very much in the game. Bloomberg’s millions go to waste It was another bad night for former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who spent hundreds of millions of dollars of his own cash to buy himself a place in the race. Yet, despite spending a whopping $500 million on ads, the idea of Bloomberg as president never took off with voters. His disastrous showing on Super Tuesday was likely no surprise to anyone who witnessed his dismal debate performances, which saw him clobbered by other candidates. Bloomberg did manage to pull off a win in the US territory of American Samoa, however, earning five of six delegates on offer there. Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard took the remaining delegate in her birthplace. Ultimately, Bloomberg’s strategy of pumping money into his campaign and skipping the contests in the early voting states did not pay off. With seemingly no way for him to bounce back (having never really bounced forward in the first place), Bloomberg threw in the towel and dropped out of the race on Wednesday morning, endorsing Biden as he went. Voter suppression Amidst all the celebrations and commiserations for candidates as exit poll numbers began to trickle in, it

was another story entirely for voters, some of whom found themselves waiting as long as seven hours to cast their ballots. Social media was awash with complaints of “voter suppression” as voters, particularly minorities, complained of broken voting machines and insufficient staff at polling stations. Voters were still casting ballots six hours after the polls closed at Texas Southern University in Houston, the Texas Tribune reported. The idea that minority voters are victims of voter suppression efforts is not new. An analysis published by the Guardian on Tuesday found that 750 polling stations have been closed in Texas since 2012 – most in areas where black and Latino populations are growing fastest. In California on Tuesday, Sanders’ campaign filed an emergency injunction to keep polls open as long lines remained as the closing hour of 8pm approached. From here on out Now that Super Tuesday is in the rearview mirror, the race looks set to become a whole lot dirtier as Biden and Sanders battle it out to become the Democratic nominee to challenge Donald Trump for the White House in November. With the weight of almost the entire Democratic and liberal media establishment behind Biden, it seems Sanders will need to step up his attacks on the former VP if he wants to convince more Americans that a Clinton-style Democrat is not best placed to beat Trump.
