Papa Marvin Cohn Art Sale

Bianca Rae, Jerry Keller, Barbara Keller and Singer-Lorna Luft. Photo by Pat Krause Senator BarbaraBoxer, Papa Marvin Cohn, and Patti Grundhofer, who bought that painting. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Artists Council of Palm Springs Art Museum held a special 50th-anniversary special event at the Aqua California Bistro on Feb. 27th. The Artists Council honored Barbara and Jerry Keller for their continued support for the Council and its programs. The event featured the artistry of Barbara Keller’s 105-year-old Father, “Papa” Marvin Cohn. Cohn continues to paint

daily who is a long time member of the Artists Council. He decided to make this event his first ever live auction of his paintings. Cohn and Barbara Keller looked at all his artwork and selected just eight colorful paintings. Each a favorite of the artist and his daughter. The paintings were donated as a fundraiser for the Artists Council. All the proceeds went to the Council. The emcee for the

night was Bianca Rae, News anchor for KESQ Channel 3. Senator Barbara Boxer took on the role of Auctioneer. Boxer is a long time friend of the Kellers. Boxer did a fantastic job making a fun night for bidding on the various paintings. Each painting has a name and a story. Along with the art were packages of unique items and tickets to special events. Each painting and benefits package was

valued, and the bidding sometimes turned into a bidding war for a particular painting and extras. Bids ranged from $500 to $2,000. Papa loves the color and is painted in Acrylics. Paintings were naming Indigo, Miss Matador, who was Barbara’s favorite, The Eyes Have It because Papa likes to paint Eyes and, Sabrina, that called after Audrey Hepburn. Jessica told Barbara years ago that he

was a fan of, Jessica Rabbit. Then there was, CABARET, that is his version of a cabaret singer, HUSH-HUSH, was named because he said she had her finger to her lips like mums the word and, AFTER the BATH, which is an abstract Nude that had people bidding against each other. Papa said he would paint another, so they sold an extra just for this party.

LION KING musical. Continuing the Safari theme, guests arrived at the big white tent for dinner with drummers in Colorful African costumes playing bongo drums. The considerable tent housed a center bar, tables covered in silver tablecloths, silver chair covers and chandeliers hanging from the top of the tent. There were four video screens and a center stage for the Lion King skit, the live auction and Living Desert speakers. Centerpieces were white orchids, and there was even an orchid on the dinner plate. All very elegant for such a splendid event. Zoobilee Emcee was the

beautiful Brooke Beare, CBS local two anchors. The Live Auction was started with Living Deserts, Mr. Prickles, and his caretaker, Rebecca. People with winning bids got to do High Fives with Mr. Prickles, a very large porcupine who did high fives on demand with the help of a treat. Brian Harnik and Mike Shumard held the Live Auction in fast-paced bidding. There was the “Raise the Paw” bidding for dollars. Each amount asked for was started with telling the guests how much it takes for electricity, school instruction tours, Children’s bus tours and how much it takes to give the lions treats and exercise. This helped guests realize what their monies

were going to accomplish. The first resident naturalist was Karen Sausman who was hired at the Living Desert in the beginning. She was unable to attend but did a video to thank the guests. The recent scholarship winner was Jacob Finely who was awarded the Karen Sausman Conservation Award, and Jacob was also the 201718 Zoo Teen. Education is a big part of the mission of the Living Desert and its programs. They work to create unique environmentally friendly spaces for each animal. They also try to make each exhibit a place to see and learn about each habitat facility. They promote dialogue with nature to educate our youth and adults.

‘Zoobilee’ 25th anniversary

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Living Desert held its Silver Safari Zoobilee 25th anniversary celebration on March 3rd. There was a cocktail hour with hundreds of silent auction items, girls in fantastic white outfits like birds and a stilt-walking Giraffe, to celebrate the Year of the Giraffe. A DJ and a musician playing the bongo drums entertained the guests during the cocktail hour. The President & CEO Allen Monroe greeted guests as they arrived holding a colossal owl that guests could pet. Valet service was free, and a shuttle driver took guests on a short tour telling about all the upcoming new

facilities that are in the works. A new Rhino Exhibit is planned, and a new Lion Structure will be built within the next two years. They are creating a new entrance and concessions area too. All this takes a significant amount of money so this Gala in just one step into the completion of these grandscale upgrades. Guests had their memento photo made and got it right away. More than 450 guests were treated to all these amenities, cocktail hour, dinner, entertainment with silent and 12 live auction items. sharing of common facilities (planned developments) and land (condominiums). Without the HOA to care for these important interests, the shared ownership is impossible. The structure of the HOA is what many of us complain about when it rubs us the wrong way, but is exactly what we appreciate when someone else is not being a good neighbor. Financial Abuse is Common in Blended Families By Janice Gough Blended families often experience hideous inheritance disputes. Emotional and Adversarial battles occur in families when the death of a parent occurs. Mega-estates of fabled billionaires is far from the only inheritances subject to ugly family feuds. Indeed, litigation over family riches is more common than imagined, especially, when it involves stepmothers and stepchildren and is even more common if the deceased husband suffered diminished cognitive capacity. A good chunk of the Estate is diminished due to legal battles, and this commonly happens in blended families between stepmothers and their stepchildren. It is even more prevalent when the stepmother has no genetic children, and the spouse has cognitive impairment. The parent who has the control over assets may have encountered a severe physical illness or dementia, where they become isolated or even neglected by family members. A Caretaker or a family member may assume control and undue authority over assets. Deathbed asset transfers are common when this happens. The family should seek immediate legal counsel to investigate undue influence over assets when the presence of cognitive impairment exists. Financial exploitation requires

establishing a sound timeline of all physical and mental incapacity, which may coincide with any changes in a parent’s financial plan. The wrongdoer, or the undue influencer, thinks the gamble is worth it because the elder doesn’t have the mental capacity or is vulnerable for some other reason. They feel they will never get caught and they have a confidence level that they’re not going to be challenged. One percent of people age 65 have dementia; and by the time you get up to age 85, 30%-45% of all people have it. Because of the ill person’s vulnerability, deathbed transfers of assets are common. If the stepmother has no genetic children, the tendency is that she wants all the assets for her benefit, even though the father has named his genetic children as remainder beneficiaries behind the stepmother. The stepmother goes through whatever assets remain for her interest. It’s very logically that she will favor their genetic children over stepchildren. This leaves his genetic children feeling abandoned. If a dependent child is a substance abuser or just uses the parent’s assets to live off, they commonly exert control and abuse over an incapacitated parent, with threats of abandonment and sending them to a nursing home, which further defines the need for management of this dependent child. There is a higher percentage of no-contact March 7, 2018

children in step-parent marriages. In many cases, the children are driven away by a greedy stepparent. No-contact children get disinherited by a more significant percentage. Many times, trusts are set up so that at the first spouse’s death, half the decedent’s trust becomes irrevocable; the other half, the survivor’s trust, is usually left revocable. The problem exists when controls are not placed on an Irrevocable portion of the estate and the decedent spouse, the stepmother, is in full control over all these assets, this portion of the estate should be set up by a management service and funded. A sound estate plan can circumvent these disputes. They could create a mutually irrevocable trust that designates the beneficiaries, and when and how they are entitled to the proceeds. By having a Revocable and Irrevocable estate, two accounts are set up in which. Each has a separate tax identification number. Competition amongst children when one child is designated as trustee can cause another error. A trustee’s authority should be defined, and benefactor’s proceeds limited. FINRA has a new rule, which went into effect on Feb. 5, allowing the advisor to put a temporary freeze on the account if it looks like someone else is trying to take money out. The rule also requires the advisor to ask the client for the name of a family member or other

trusted person, so that if they see a cognitive decline or signs of financial exploitation, they can reach out to them. The rule provides some legal backing to the financial advisor when there’s suspicion raised. As a financial advisor, we are obligated to look out for Red Flags, especially if the husband becomes vulnerable and suddenly changes are made to the trust, mainly if the switch includes that proceeds go to the spouse and her genetic children and not anything to his children. A trusted member should be made aware that any changes. A timeline to focus on activities proving diminished mental capacity and any wrongdoing which may have occurred in that period. The schedule will provide investigators of any wrongdoing by any persons or caretakers. The wrongdoer is always going to maintain that the person was of perfectly sound mind almost up till the day they died. But that’s usually not hard to figure out or challenge because the central issue of undue influence is a vulnerability, which is not hard to determine and is a critical factor in deciding elder financial abuse. Why Real Estate is Still A Good Investment

By Ana Bourne The stock market has always attracted those who want to make massive profits, but many prudent investors are wary of its instability— the recent 1,300-point drop of the Dow Jones Industrial Average for the week of February 5th, is a classic case in point. Fortunately, the market bounced back recouping some of its losses, serving as a stark reminder of Wall Street’s volatility. Luckily for us, the stock market is not the only place we can invest. In fact, a strong argument can be made for another time-honored, wiser and safer method to make money: real estate. There are a few key reasons why real estate is currently and always will be a more stable investment than the stock market. First, as a long-term, tangible investment, real estate values increase over time, naturally keeping pace with inflation. Those who are patient and hold onto their investments during a real estate downturn are ultimately rewarded. This

isn’t necessarily true for the stock market, where the risk never changes, and stocks can suffer unpredictable hits in value or even decrease to zero value over time. Secondly, for those who are in a position to rent property, real estate is a particular source of stable, cash-based income. This allows a property owner to generate higher rental revenue during times of higher inflation, often proving to be a more lucrative investment than bonds when hedging against inflation. When you purchase property, the mortgage rate, which remains the most expensive cost of maintaining a property, is typically locked in at a fixed-rate over an extended period. This enables a property owner to borrow against their property’s equity to make additional investments while recovering some of the cost of ownership through multiple tax benefits. While a property owner can rely on the stability of fixed-rate loans, as the landlord, they also can increase the rent to

keep pace with the market. Thirdly, the use of leverage in real estate is double that of investing in stock portfolios. What is the advantage? It’s merely using borrowed money to buy or finance something. For example, with a standard mortgage, a typical 20% down payment gets you 100% of the house in which you want to live (or rent). Some financing programs allow you to put even less money down, still granting you the same house.

Even if your real estate properties appreciate more slowly than stocks do after a five-year period, often you come out ahead, because of the combination of tax breaks and leverage. In the long-term, it can generate years of consistent revenue, as the property itself will likely appreciate with value. Real estate investments can be an excellent alternative to investing in stocks. If you prefer lower risk, hands-on

investments, multiple tax benefits, and tangible assets… then real estate is where you want to keep your money. Ana Bourne is a Palm Springs area real estate investor, and owner and president of Global Alliance International, a corporate holding company that houses five separate and distinct subsidiaries in the areas of real estate, capital investment lending, multi-level marketing, and non-profit management.

By Desert Star Staff PORTLAND, Ore. – Sales are skyrocketing for the bottled water industry, but what are companies actually selling to customers? In its new report “Take Back the Tap,” Food and Water Watch researchers look at the booming business of bottled water, which surpassed soda in sales in 2016. The group finds nearly 64 percent of bottled water comes from municipal taps and that it cost almost 2,000 times as much as tap water and four times as much as gasoline. Patty Lovera, food and

water policy director with Food and Water Watch, says bottled water companies target demographics through advertising, especially immigrant communities. “It is much more the norm in other countries where you have to go buy bottled water because the safety systems aren’t there for tap water,” says Lovera. “That’s not the case in most American cities. That’s pretty predatory to convince people they need to keep spending their hard earned money to do that and undermining people’s confidence in tap water.”

Bottled water companies say their water actually is safer. The report also found about 70 percent of bottles aren’t recycled and that four billion pounds of plastic were used to produce bottles in 2016. That’s enough to fill the Empire State Building 1.3 times. Activists also have raised concerns that companies that do rely on groundwater are depleting people’s local water supplies and hurting the ecosystem. For a decade, Nestlé has tried to open bottling plants in the Columbia River Gorge,

but failed. In 2016, people in Cascade Locks voted to ban large bottling facilities. Lovera says the company kept trying to open a facility in the town until Governor Kate Brown killed its chances for good last year. “The governor weighed in and basically blocked a fairly complicated deal that would have let Nestle do a water transfer to get access to build a water facility in the Columbia River Gorge,” she says. “So, it’s a huge issue for communities when they see the volumes of water that would be removed.” Lovera says even though

most tap water systems are safe, the country’s water infrastructure is in need of maintenance, especially in places such as Flint, Michigan, and that federal funding is the best avenue for that. But she adds that it can be difficult to get support for this idea. “It’s hard to build that political will if people think that you buy water at the grocery store and you just have to go take care of it that way” she says. “We kind of undermine this sense of ownership and accountability for having a tap water system that works for everybody.”

Sierra Club, calls it “a danger to a critical state resource” – a message she intends to deliver at the hearing. “New Hampshire does not support drilling off of our coast,” says Corkery, “in the Gulf of Maine or in any of the areas that have been permanently protected.” President Donald Trump has said the current ban on coastal drilling deprives the nation of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in wealth. The hearing is from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the Holiday Inn on North Main Street in Concord. But Corkery asserts that lifting the ban not only would put coastal areas at risk of oil spills, but also perpetuate reliance on energy sources that threaten the entire planet.

“Sierra Club certainly believes that we need to be shifting away from fossil fuels and focusing more on local, renewable energy,” she says. The Trump administration also has withdrawn the U.S. from international efforts to curb global climate change. Corkery says she’ll be at the hearing, along with a coalition of conservation groups and a bipartisan group of legislators. “We are asking folks to come join us on the sidewalk,” she says, “and we’ll be holding signs and voicing our opposition to the drilling plan.” The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management accepts public comments on the proposal through March 9.

ith tax season in full swing, take time to consider how to get the most out of your tax return, which includes finding all the credits and deductions available to you. While many taxpayers claim common deductions, such as home mortgage interest and self-employment expenses, there are additional tax deductions that can lessen your final tax bill or increase your refund. These often-overlooked tax breaks could potentially save you hundreds – maybe even thousands – of dollars if you itemize deductions. To start, get to know the difference between tax credits and tax deductions. Tax credits reduce the amount you owe in taxes. In some circumstances, tax credits allow a refundable credit, meaning you may not only reduce the amount you owe to $0, but you can also get money back. Deductions, on the other hand, simply reduce your taxable income. Both can have a potentially significant impact on your taxes and are often worth the extra effort to include on your return. Some commonly overlooked credits include: 1. Child and Dependent Care Credit: You can claim a credit of up to $2,100 for day care for your dependents so you and your spouse can work. Qualifying dependents include children under 13 and parents who are no longer able to care for themselves. 2. Earned Income Tax Credit: The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a federal tax credit based on your income and the number of qualifying children living with you. Nearly 1 in 5 people who qualify fail to claim the credit, worth up to $6,318. Just because you didn’t qualify last year doesn’t mean you won’t this year; one-third of the EITC-eligible population changes each year based on marital, parental and financial status. 3. Saver’s Credit or the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit: Make sure you “pay yourself first.” Even if it is only $20 each pay cycle, make sure you are putting some money into a retirement

Refund Advance

Some tax deductions that allow you to reduce your taxable income include: 1. Moving Expenses: If you moved for a job that is at least 50 miles away from your home and held this job for at least 39 weeks, you can claim your moving expenses even if you don’t itemize deductions. 2. Tax-Preparation Fees: Plan for tax time. Tax laws change and so do life circumstances. Using a professional to help you file your return may be a wise investment. For example, the tax pros at Jackson Hewitt can help you get every deduction and credit you deserve and the biggest refund possible. Plus, the cost of preparing your taxes can be claimed if you itemize your deductions. In fact, one missed credit or deduction could more than cover the cost of having your taxes prepared by a tax professional. 3. New Moms: Breast pumps and lactation supplies are considered medical equipment, which means they qualify for a possible deduction. 4. Career Corner: Job hunting often means investing both time and money. However, you may be able to deduct some of the job-search expenses you incur. Costs such as preparing resumes, creating and maintaining websites, business cards, agency fees and travel expenses may be eligible. 5. Wedding Bells: If you were married in a church or at a historical site during the past year, you may be able to deduct fees paid to the venue as a charitable donation.

If you’re getting a refund, you typically want it as soon as possible, but that isn’t always an option, especially if you are one of the millions of Americans who claim either the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit. You could access up to $3,200 with a no-fee Refund Advance loan at zero percent annual percentage rate (APR), offered by MetaBank, at participating Jackson Hewitt locations. Terms apply, visit JacksonHewitt.com for details.

6. Medical Fitness: While general toning and fitness workouts to improve general health are considered personal expenses, you may be able to deduct your gym membership as a medical expense. If a doctor diagnoses you with a specific medical condition, such as obesity or hypertension, or a specific physical or mental illness, and prescribes workouts or participation in a weight-loss program to treat your illness, the membership dues may be tax-deductible. 7. Road Warriors If you travel for business and aren’t reimbursed by your employer, those costs can qualify as a deduction. Every possible tax credit and deduction can help when money is tight. You might qualify for at least one overlooked credit or deduction – and maybe more than one. Consult a tax professional to discuss how you can maximize your refund and learn more at JacksonHewitt.com.

Did You Know? 1. The IRS, as well as many states, allows taxpayers to catch up on missed credits or deductions, offering a three-year window for filing an amended tax return. You can secure unclaimed credits and deductions by filing amended tax returns to avoid losing any unclaimed funds from as far back as 2014. 2. With locations across the United States, including kiosks in 3,000 Walmart stores, the tax professionals at Jackson Hewitt make it easy to stop in when it’s most convenient for you. 3. If you are a single parent, you can file as Head of Household instead of Single. This filing status can provide better deduction options and a lower tax rate schedule.

A Win in Court for California Sea Otters

By Desert Star Staff PASADENA, Calif. – A big win for southern sea otters, as a federal judge on the 9th Circuit in Pasadena ruled Thursday that the feds do not have to reinstate a failed policy of “No Otter Zones” that had been put in place to protect commercial fishing interests. Representatives of the sea urchin and abalone industries had sued the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to get them to restart a Reagan era policy of trapping and relocating sea otters from Point Conception to the Mexican border, onto San Nicholas Island, south of Santa Barbara. Steve Shimek, executive director of The Otter Project, says when 140 otters were moved starting in 1987, all but 11 died, swam back north or disappeared out to sea. “In retrospect, the idea

of putting ‘lines’ across the water, and saying that a marine mammal should not cross that line, just kind of doesn’t make sense,” says Shimek. “So, it was destined to fail from the beginning – and it failed.” Environmental groups had to sue to get the feds to stop relocating the otters – and then, sided with the feds in the latest lawsuit to protect the sea mammals. Shimek estimates about a dozen fishing crews each make $500,000 a year selling sea urchins to sushi chefs in Japan. He thinks it’ll be 50 to 100 years before the otters eat so many urchins as to make that fishery unprofitable. Shimek also notes that sea otters are crucial to a healthy ocean environment. “If you take the otter out of the system, the system often becomes overrun with urchins

Experts say sea otters keep sea urchins from ravaging kelp forests, maintaining habitat for fish. (Kconnors/Morguefile) and you lose kelp forests,” he says. “Sea otters bring back healthy kelp forests; healthy kelp forests bring back fish.”

Sea otters are considered threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Experts believe 12,000

to 16,000 of them once lived off the Southern California coast – but now, just over 3,000 are left.

5 Ways to Refresh Your Home for Spring

By Desert Star Staff Spring is a time for renewal and awakenings. It’s also the perfect time to take your cues from Mother Nature and devise a plan to reduce and reimagine your way to a refreshing, updated home you can fully enjoy once more. Reorganize cluttered areas: If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able - and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate. Eliminate the extras: While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

Photo courtesy of Getty Images Get rid of grime: A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore

a crisp, clean appearance. Revise for real life: If there’s an area of your home that isn’t quite working for your lifestyle, spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to make a change. That may mean reconfiguring furniture for a more functional living room or converting an underused guest room into a useful craft or project space. Take time to consider what changes will make the space more practical, and even sketch out some possibilities on paper to fine-tune your ideas before you get to work. Self Defense Class Comes to Palm Springs, Geared Towards LGBT Community

KMIR Patrick Price Palm Springs, CA - It’s a first for the Palm Springs area. A self-defense class focused on helping people protect themselves if ever attacked while out at a bar or on the street and it’s mainly focusing on the LGBT community after several reports of gay bashing over the busy 2017 Pride weekend. “When I hear friends of friends that were attacked where ever it was in a club or something. I’m like oh man,” said Harry Legg, owner of New Jersey Tai Chi and the instructor for Saturday’s self-defense class. “Stay back, stay back, stay back,” he said in a demonstration for KMIR News on Friday morning. The techniques Legg teaches are more than just about throwing a quick punch. “And you can see, how right away, I take him down,” said Legg. It’s really a mental game when face to face with an attacker. “Your eye contact, the

body posture and using your voice,” said Legg. “Shows you how to throw up a really strong deterrent which will hopefully make a potential attacker say, whoa I do not want to deal with you.” Legg knows that his class could potentially help reduce recently reported attacks on the LGBT community, or at least protect the potential victims from someone their size or someone significantly larger. “So you pin me down on the ground where I can’t move. If I muscle this it’s very difficult but I will teach you a relaxation technique...that allows you to just get them off right away,” said Legg. Tishema Moss is a native of Palm Springs. Thankfully she’s never been approached or attacked but it doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen. “I’d have to protect myself if that happens, but I try not to think that way. I try to stay positive,” she said. It’s worth keeping good thoughts but Legg says there’s no better time than present to learn from past incidents

to stay safe in the future. “Most people are going to back off unless that have really strong criminal intent,” said Legg. The class will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 24th at the Desert Rocks Indoor Climbing Gym. Their address is 19160 McLane St, North Palm Springs, CA 92258. Advance tickets are $50, and it is $60 at the door. Again, this is open to anyone. Source:KMIR March 7, 2018

‘I, Tonya’--A Dark Comedy About A Sports Scandal Ice skating events are always an Olympic highlight. They represent the embodiment of skill, athletic prowess and grace under pressure. In Universal Pictures “I, Tonya,” nominated for three Academy Awards, we go behind the scenes of one of the most sensational sports scandals that involved figure skaters Tonya Harding and her skating rival, Nancy Kerrigan. On Jan. 6, 1994 Nancy Kerrigan suffered an attack by an assailant hired by Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan, ”Captain America” franchise). Eventually the public held Tonya in contempt as well, believing she too was an accomplice in the sordid attack on Kerrigan. She denied the accusations, but the public’s ire ended her blossoming career. This was unfortunate because Tonya was very talented and was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, but her legacy was forever tarnished following the assault on Nancy Kerrigan.

The film begins when Tonya is very small. Her mother LaVona decides to have her learn how to ice skate and from the very beginning she warns Tonya not to befriend any of the other little girls in her class, telling her they are her rivals. Her mother (Allison Janney, who won a 2018 Golden Globe for her performance) also warns Tonya to focus only on her skating because she’s paying good money for her lessons--this is not play time. Her father is more supportive. The two of them go for walks and he teaches her how to shoot a gun and treats her to ice cream. When he eventually leaves home little Tonya cries, begging him to stay. As he reluctantly drives away she realizes she is now alone with her mother. Margot Robbie, who stars as Tonya, is a contender in the Best Actress category and Janney is a nominee for Best Supporting Actress. The film’s third Oscar nomination is for Best Film Editing. “I, Tonya” was directed

by Craig Gillespie (“Lars and the Real Girl.”) and is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. Bonus features on the Blu-ray, DVD and digital include: Deleted Scenes, Behind the Scenes, Feature Commentary with Director Craig Gillespie and trailers. “I, Tonya” is rated R for pervasive language, violence, some sexual

content/nudity. Running time 2 hours, 1 minute.

On The Beach With Film Independent Spirit Awards

L-R: Nick Kroll and John Mulaney co-host the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards held in a big tent on the beach in Santa Monica Photo by: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images SHOT 2 CAPTION: L-R: Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon receive the Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay - “The Big Sick.” Photo by: Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images What threatened to be a rainy, windy day turned out to be quite the opposite as the god of sunshine beamed his light down on the still damp, but beautiful Santa Monica Beach, once again home to Film Independent Spirit Awards. Now in its 33rd year, Film Independent is a nonprofit arts organization that encourages independent visual storytelling and supports a community of artists who embody diversity, innovation, and unique vision. Journalists from around the world gather to cover this annual celebration honoring the filmmakers who obtain financing outside of the studio system, and therefore are not constricted by studio demands. This allows them to make films that are true to their artistic vision and the Film Independent Spirit Awards honors their achievements. With Nick Kroll and John Mulaney presiding over this entertaining non-black tie ceremony, celebrity guests and honorees showed up for the pre-show lunch in the

familiar Big Tent more dressed than the usual torn jeans with knees poking through. With no language restrictions, the co-hosts took full comic advantage in both delivering prepared jokes and off-the-cuff remarks, including comments on the epidemic of sexual misconduct with some mention of yes, Harvey Weinstein. The “anything goes” is at the heart of the Film Independent Spirit Awards and is what makes it unique, relaxed, and fun. Among some of the presenters were, Fred Armisen, Chadwick Boseman, Alison Brie, Timothée Chalamet, Ava DuVernay, Joseph GordonLevitt, Danai Gurira, Jon Hamm, Ethan Hawke, Spike Lee, Ben Mendelsohn, Janelle Monáe, Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Olsen, Robert Pattinson, Salma Hayek Pinault, Margot Robbie, Amanda Seyfried, Molly Shannon, Sarah Silverman, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Lena Waithe. Sunflower Bean was the house band. This year’s major winners were Get Out, which won Best

Feature and Best Director; Call Me by Your Name, which won Best Male Lead and Best Cinematography; I, Tonya, which won Best Supporting Female and Best Editing; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which won Best Female Lead and Best Supporting Male; Lady Bird, which won Best Screenplay; Ingrid Goes West, which won Best First Feature; The Big Sick, which won Best First Screenplay; Life and Nothing More, which won the John Cassavetes Award; Faces Places which won Best Documentary and A Fantastic Woman, which won Best International Film. The coveted Robert Altman Award was given to Mudbound director Dee Rees who accepted on behalf of cast members Jonathan Banks, Mary J. Blige, Jason Clarke, Garrett Hedlund, Jason Mitchell, Rob Morgan, and Carey Mulligan and casting directors Billy Hopkins and Ashley Ingram. While the show aired live

Photo by: Araya Diaz/Getty Images simultaneously on IFC and on Facebook Watch at 2:00 pm PT/5:00 ET, with cameras in hand, fans lined up behind viewing barriers set up along the path leading to the tents to get a glimpse of some of their favorite movie stars, some of whom greeted the fans, signed autographs, and posed for pictures. So once again, thousands of dishes were cleared away and the tents were folded up until next year when Film Independent Spirit Awards would once again return to the little city by the sea to bring its own special brand of celebrating the world of outstanding independent filmmakers. As far as the weather, it held up just about until the end of the day when the skies suddenly darkened, the temperature dipped, the wind began to blow, and tiny droplets sprinkled on the departing guests. Following is a complete list of the winners: Best Feature: Get Out (Universal Pictures) Producers: Jason Blum, Edward H. Hamm Jr., Sean McKittrick, Jordan Peele Best Director: Jordan Peele, Get Out (Universal Pictures)

L-R: Greta Gerwig who won the Best Screenplay Spirit Award for “Lady Bird’ with fellow director Jordan Peele who scored both Best Director and Best Features awards for “Get Out.”

FAMILY FEATURES

ver since the day the first feline became a house cat, destructive cat scratching has plagued owners. All the affection and loving care owners shower upon their cats can feel like wasted energy when the thanks they get looks more like hatred: shredded furniture, carpet and curtains. It’s a normal human response to be angry or frustrated about damage inflicted by cats’ scratching, but equally normal is a cat’s need to scratch. Cat scratching is a behavior that fulfills both physical and emotional needs. Cats scratch to stretch their bodies, maintain their hunting and climbing skills, groom their claws and mark their territory, showing they’re in a safe space. However, these behaviors cats exhibit to establish a safe living space can be anything but pleasant for their human companions. This can lead frustrated owners to take drastic measures to modify behavior, but those decisions can be risky, especially when it comes to a permanent and potentially harmful practice like declawing. Many pet owners believe that declawing their cats is a harmless and quick fix for unwanted scratching, similar to trimming one’s nails.

However, if a declawing procedure were performed on a human being, it would be like cutting off each finger at the last knuckle. “Not only does the practice cause pain, it removes an important self-defense tool and the surgery itself poses risks related to anesthesia and infection,” said Dr. Valarie V. Tynes, president of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists, licensed veterinarian and veterinary services specialist at Ceva Animal Health. “All of this can lead to behavioral issues that may be worse than a shredded couch.” Declawing is an irreversible measure to address a normal behavioral issue in cats. Declawed cats may be less likely to use a litter box, more likely to bite and the disruption of the natural scratching behavior can cause lasting physiological problems. That sentiment is echoed by national organizations such as the American Association for Feline Practitioners, which deems the practice of declawing an ethically controversial procedure that is not medically necessary in most instances. In fact, declawing cats is now illegal in several U.S. cities. Find alternatives to declawing, and catscratching solutions, at savethecouches.com.

5 Humane Alternatives to Declawing There are numerous safe and painless alternatives to declawing, including these ideas from the pet behavior experts at Ceva Animal Health: 1. Routinely trim nails. Regular nail care is an important part of general care and hygiene for your cat, but it can also help prevent scratching damage by eliminating the sharp, destructive claw tips. Properly trimmed nails are less likely to snag or split, and cats with well-trimmed nails are less likely to resort to scratching as part of their own self-grooming rituals.

and potential physical harm of the painful declawing procedure,” Tynes said.

2. Create scratch-friendly zones. Keeping cats from scratching areas you don’t want them to bother is far more likely if you provide areas where they can scratch at will, such as scratching pads and posts. Pair these scratching areas with a product such as Feliscratch by Feliway, which is clinically proven to prevent destructive scratching by redirecting cats to scratch in the right place. Cats are attracted to the drugfree, naturally derived product and will feel compelled to scratch where it’s applied, leaving that chair or couch alone. “Cat owners can now have damage-free home decor without putting their cats through the stress

4. Consult a behaviorist. Not all cases have easy answers, but an expert with experience in animal behavior can provide guidance based specifically on your cat’s personality and circumstances to help create a custom solution.

www.desertstarweekly.com

3. Reinforce off-limits areas. Cats are highly tactile, so applying textured materials like double-sided sticky tape or rough, crinkly aluminum foil to areas you don’t want scratched can be an effective deterrent.

5. Eliminate negative reinforcements. Avoid punishing your cat for undesirable behavior. This includes shouting, spraying with water or swatting your cat. Punishment can increase stress and anxiety. It can make the problem worse and may even make your cat afraid of you.

DIY Scratching Post

Designating a spot for your cat to safely scratch is one of the most effective ways to minimize damage to your possessions. A homemade scratching post is a quick and easy project. 1. Cut foot-long length of 4-by-4-inch wood and a 1-foot square piece of plywood. The exact sizes can vary, but these are good starting points that you can adjust up or down, depending on your space. 2. Sand away splinters and rough edges. 3. Add a sturdy fabric wrap or paint to lend aesthetic appeal to the plywood base. 4. Wrap the post tightly with heavy-gauge rope or carpet scraps (or both), securing tightly with glue and reinforcing with a staple gun. 5. Securely attach the post to the base using a long bolt. 6. Place the post in an area your cat enjoys spending time, and consider adding a pheromone therapy spray to attract your cat to the post.

Eric Kayquaptewa

Raymard Tawma Lalo

By Desert Star Staff Meet the Artists: Eric Kayquaptewa: Eric Kayquaptewa is a Hopi Native American from the village of Hotevilla, Arizona, which is located on the third mesa on the Hopi reservation. He began learning how to carve by making flat kachina dolls around the age of 15 from watching his father, grandfather, brother, and cousins. Eric has improved upon his skills and has advanced to making more elaborate kachina dolls known as contemporary style kachina dolls. He sells his artwork in stores and galleries across the United States and throughout parts of Europe, Australia, Japan, and Canada. Five years ago he refined another skill called the traditional kachina doll style. In

creating the traditional kachina dolls, Eric uses natural earth pigments that he collects and crushes into a fine powder. He uses feathers from ducks, pheasants, and parrots, as well as rabbit fur and leather. As for the contemporary style, he uses a wood burner, wood stain, and oil paints.

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, Music legends Glen Campbell and Willie Nelson have been nominated for the Academy of Country Music Award for Vocal Event of the Year for their poignant duet “Funny How Time Slips Away.” The 53rd Academy of Country Music Awards will air live on Sunday April 15, at 8 PM ET/PT on the CBS Television Network. “I’m so proud of my dad and so glad his music is still being enjoyed and recognized in the music community. He always put his heart and soul into every song he ever sang,” said Ashley Campbell. Written by Nelson 57 years ago, “Funny How Time

Slips Away” was recorded for Campbell’s Grammy® -nominated farewell album, Adiós, released in June 2017 via UMe to rave reviews. The collaboration between longtime friends takes on a new gravitas as the two trailblazers reflect back together on where the years went. Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a marvelous, albeit heartbreaking, tribute to their enduring love and respect for one another,” the song is even more significant following Campbell’s death last year from Alzheimer’s. In November, the collaboration won the Country Music Association Award for Musical Event of the Year. Adiós capped off an extraordinary career for

all hand-made, wood tools and the paints are all-natural pigment paints that he collects. He says that, “The kachina dolls that I carve are replicas of how I would see them in physical form when they Darance Makwesa come to visit Hopi.” Darance Chimerica: Darance Makwesa recently went to Japan for a Chimerica is also a Hopi Native solo gallery showing and has participated in art markets American from the village of in Arizona, New Mexico, Hotevilla, Arizona. In 2015, Raynard won Best of Category at the Heard Museum Art Market. Raynard better understands the basics of carving due to growing up watching his father carve. Throughout the years,

Glen Campbell And Willie Nelson Nominated for ACM Award Campbell that spanned more than six decades and 50 million albums sold. Hailed as one of the best of his career, the album received an incredible reaction around the world from the likes of Rolling Stone, USA Today, NPR, Uncut and many others. It debuted in the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 garnering Campbell his 16th Top 40 album and his 19th Top 10 Country Record. The album Campbell had always wanted to do, Adiós was recorded following his “Goodbye Tour” which he launched after revealing he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. FREER aka BRIGITTE FREER aka BIBI E. FREER . A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by RIVERSIDE COUNTY PUBLIC ADMINISTRATOR in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that RIVERSIDE COUNTY PUBLIC ADMINISTRATOR be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act . (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: April 3, 2018 at 8:45AM in Dept. 1A located at 46-200 OASIS STREET, INDIO, CA 92201 IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. Transform Your Bathroom into the Ultimate Paradise

By Desert Star Staff Many people spend a lot of time in the bathroom. It’s a functional space where you can bathe, get ready for the day and take care of business. However, the bathroom can be so much more than that: it can offer a place to destress, relax and recharge before taking on the morning or after conquering a long day. Now you can escape to your own paradise without leaving home. These simple tips and tricks from lifestyle and parenting expert Jordan Reid of Ramshackle Glam can help you transform your bathroom into a spa-like oasis without undergoing a major renovation. 1. Don’t be scared to play with lighting, as it helps create a room’s atmosphere. Use multi-bulb lighting fixtures paired with warm LEDs. For a sunset-on-the-beach vibe, try pink bulbs in the bathroom with your regular lighting; together they can create a rosy-glow that’s the perfect aesthetic for a relaxing time.

2. To immerse yourself in the sand and sun, use collections of gold-framed mirrors. Adding mirrors is a simple way to bounce additional light around the room, and the gold can add a warm hue, so they’re both functional and aesthetically pleasing. 3. Bathrooms can have greenery in them, too. Plants such as philodendrons and bromeliads can add an element of airiness and life, and both can be found in super-realistic faux styles if your bathroom is not conducive to the real thing. 4. Don’t be afraid to accessorize your bathroom with items that fit your style and personality. For your paradise getaway, a bamboo bathmat can create a beachy vibe that’s also chic and modern and Turkish towels can add texture and color. Even smaller items, such as jewelry stands, towel hooks and toilet paper holders, can show off your unique aesthetic and make your escape truly your own.

products such as those from the Clorox Scentiva Pacific Breeze & Coconut line, including bathroom foamer, toilet cleaning gel, multi-surface spray and disinfecting wipes, not only deliver a refreshing clean, but

can also help transport you to a relaxing paradise with aromas of coconut, pineapples and warm sandalwood. For more information, visit Clorox. com. Family Features

At this year’s State of the City, Mayor Sabby Jonathan, laid-out several future plans for Palm Desert, such as

beginning construction of CV Link later in the year, but also new developments around the campuses of CSUSBPD and UCR. Jonathan said the development will be different to the current aesthetic of the city, he said, “Smaller homes, very little backyards, but instead a sense of community.” He said the traditional 10,000 square feet lots will be reduced to 4,000. He said the goal of the planned project is to have more housing options at different price points that students and young professionals can afford. Jonathan said, “There’ll be neighborhood gardens, there’ll be neighborhood yoga pads, there’ll be lanes for walking and biking, not on the street but through the homes, there’ll be front porches.”

He said they need more housing to fit the growing campus, he said CSUSBPD is almost reaching 8,000 students. First-year student, Tatiana Savala, said she usually studies around the CSU campus, but she said she would like more options to spend the time. Savala said, “A place where students can go and hang out, do work, not so much focused on education but a place that’s fun for them.” She said she would like to see more of a college community on and off campus. And as student enrollment continues to grow at Cal State San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus, Mayor Jonathan said in about five to ten years, it will be renamed to just CSU Palm Desert. Source: KMIR

Cabaret at The McCallum

By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, CA. The McCallum Theatre presents Cabaret for seven performances, Wednesday, March 28, through Sunday, April 1. The Saturday March 31 performance at 2:00pm is presented through the generosity of Robert and Sharlene Britz. Based on Roundabout Theatre Company’s Tony Award-winning production, Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) and Rob Marshall’s (Into the Woods and Chicago, the films) Cabaret comes to the McCallum Theatre. Welcome to the infamous Kit Kat Klub where the Emcee, Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd and leave their troubles outside. But as life in pre-WWII Germany grows more and more uncertain, will the decadent allure of Berlin nightlife be enough to get them through their dangerous times? Cabaret features some of the most memorable songs in theatre history, including “Cabaret,” “Willkommen,” and “Maybe This Time.” Creative Bios Joe Masteroff (Book). Born in 1919 in Philadelphia, he had only one dream from infancy: to write for the theatre. After the essential lonely childhood and four-year stint in the Air Force, he came to New York to face

his future: book writer or book seller? Happily, luck intervened. Before long he had three shows on Broadway bearing his name: The Warm Peninsula starring Julie Harris, and two musicals She Loves Me and Cabaret, for which he was the book writer. Thanks to indulgent parents, the New Dramatists, Hal Prince and many others, he is now retired and living in subdued luxury. John Kander (Music) and Fred Ebb (Lyrics). The Kander and Ebb collaboration of four decades created many Broadway standards and contemporary classics. Their first collaboration, “My Coloring Book,” became a hit song for Barbra Streisand, earning John and Fred a Grammy nomination. Kander and Ebb’s first Broadway show in 1965 Flora, the Red Menace, produced by Hal Prince, directed by George Abbott introduced a rising new star, Liza Minnelli. Followed by Cabaret (Tony Award music and lyrics); The Happy Time; Zorba; 70, Girls, 70; Chicago; The Act; Woman of the Year (Tony Award music and lyrics); The Rink; Kiss of the Spider Woman (Tony Award music and lyrics); and Steel Pier. Along with movies and television writing original material for the Academy Awards “Liza With a Z” and HBO’s Liza Minnelli’s “Steppin’ Out” (both Emmy winners); “Baryshnikov on Broadway;”

“Goldie and Liza Together;” Funny Lady; Lucky Lady; New York, New York; Steppin’Out; and Chicago the movie. In 1985, the song “New York, New York” became the official anthem of New York City. At the time of Mr. Ebb’s death in 2004, Kander and Ebb had several projects in different stages of completion, Tony-nominated Curtains, in 2007; 12-time Tony-nominated The Scottsboro Boys, in 2010; All About Us (an adaptation of The Skin of our Teeth); and The Visit, premiering at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, then the Signature Theatre in

Fairfax, VA, and nominated for five Tony Awards, including best score in 2015, all starring Chita Rivera. Mr. Kander is currently collaborating with author/ playwright Greg Pierce The Landing and Kid Victory deputed at the Signature Theatre and The Vineyard Theatre. Sam Mendes (Director) founded and ran the Donmar Warehouse in London for ten years. He has directed many productions at the Donmar, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, in the West End and on Broadway. He founded the trans-Atlantic theatre company The Bridge Project, for whom he directed five productions that toured the world. In London recently: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. In addition, he has directed several movies, including the Academy Awardwinning American Beauty and the James Bond movies, Skyfall and Spectre. He has won many awards for his work on stage and screen, including the Tony, the Olivier, the Directors Guild Award, the Shakespeare Prize, the BAFTA, the Golden Globe and the Academy Award. He was awarded the CBE in 2000 and the Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. Rob Marshall (Co-Director, Choreographer). Broadway:

Cabaret; Little Me; Kiss of the Spider Woman; She Loves Me; Damn Yankees; Victor/Victoria; A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum; and Company. For his stage work, Marshall has earned six Tony nominations, the Outer Critics Award, the Jason Robards Award and the George Abbott Award. Film: Chicago; Memoirs of a Geisha; Nine; Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides; and Into the Woods. Marshall’s films have been nominated for 26 Academy Awards and have won nine, including Best Picture.
