Mysterious ‘Planet 9’ By Desert Star Staff The furor surrounding the solar system’s theoretical ‘Planet 9’ reached new heights after a University of Michigan researcher discovered evidence that may shed light on the existence of the elusive world beyond Neptune. Some researchers believe that ‘Planet 9’ exists

because of the way certain space phenomena, known as Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs), behave. Conspiracy theorists, meanwhile, believe that NASA is keeping Planet 9’s existence a secret because it’s on a collision course with Earth, which will result in our annihilation. But let’s stick with the

scientists for now, shall we? Research from Juliette Becker and her team indicates the answer to Planet 9’s existence lies in the life of TNOs. Smaller than the former planet Pluto, TNOs are solid objects which orbit the sun at a greater distance than Neptune, the gas giant at

the edge of the solar system. Some astronomers say that for these TNOs to occupy their current orbits, they must have been in the solar system for more than a billion years. Others think, however, that in that vast amount of time some of these TNOs should have either crashed into another planet, been

hurled into the sun or been flung out into deep space by the gravitational force of other planets. Using a large set of computer simulations, Becker uncovered two new pieces of information about TNOs. First, researchers Continues on Page 3

Eisenhower Training Kicked in During Emergency Kitty Alvarado Monday’s shooting outside the orthopedic building Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage happened quickly. Frank McDonell a patient who was there when a man opened fire says the staff responded just as fast, “Pretty scary when I was just opening the door and she came running out at me and said don’t go outside there’s a shooter outside.” Patients were whisked away by staff to a secure building to shelter in place. Elizabeth Wholihan, the marketing and public

relations vice president with Eisenhower Health says no one can predict when emergencies like these will happen but their staffed stepped up, “Everyone knew how to react in the moment that was challenging, unexpected and shocking.” While they cannot speak about specifics of this case because of the investigation, she says staff follows homeland security protocols in emergency situations and they train year round for the unexpected, “We do drills for all kinds of all different Continues on Page 3

How Pros Train for the Big Match

Luz Delia Caballero Today was another beautiful day at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. A place where fans and players, alike, are able to be fully engulfed in the sport that they love. However, how exactly do players prepare for the big match? They train

extensively and have a healthy diet, but they also have specific people who warm them up; one of them being 22-year-old Manfred Brandes. “I’m more scared that they are going to hurt me,” Manfred told NBC Palm Springs, while explaining what it is that he does.

In fact, he is a hitting partner for players at the 2019 BNP Paribas Open. “I do what they want to do. If they want to start and then do some drills, cross court or down the line. They want you to be the best that you can be for them to practice, so they ask you to

go as hard as you can.” Manfred says that this gig is a lot of fun, but it does have its drawbacks. “Yeah, I’m from Mexico, and I’ve been traveling all around the world to improve my game. I miss home.” However, he assures that he wouldn’t miss this opportunity for the world. “Everyday is a new challenge. Every day you can go into the court without knowing what to expect.” That is to say, not only is he training with elite athletes, like tennis star Taylor Fritz, but he is also learning things off the court. “After warming up with Taylor. We sat down and Taylor sat with me and said, can I give you some tips. So he gave me two tips on my game. To lean forward on my forehand and to go forward in my serve. It’s amazing all those extra details he sees in your game and

how he improves it. Plus, school is awesome. Well, at first, I didn’t know what to expect. It was my first time going to college here and it’s also very different.” Different because now he’s shuffling tennis and business administration at College of the Desert so that he can continue improving and playing the game he loves. “I think it’s an interesting combination between skill, mental strength, physical strength, stamina and all that combined is what makes tennis beautiful for me.” Remember, you can always tune in to NBC Palm Springs for highlights and can catch the matches on your tv on the channels listed below. To the Batmobile! Bugatti’s new $19mn ‘hypercar’

By Desert Star Staff Luxury automaker Bugatti had barely unveiled its new sports car when the vehicle was purchased by a mystery buyer for an unprecedented €16.7 million ($19 million). The new supercar, named La Voiture Noire, was publicly debuted on Tuesday at the Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland. The amount spent by an unknown German on the new mostexpensive car ever built could buy over 500 Tesla Model 3s. The automaker produced only one example of La Voiture Noire to celebrate Bugatti’s 110th anniversary. According to the company, the six-tailpipe “hypercar” is equipped with an eight-liter engine that has

16 cylinders and 1500 brake horsepower. The new vehicle is reportedly a homage to Bugatti’s legendary Type 57 SC Atlantic, which was produced in the 1930s. The company hasn’t revealed the name of buyer who snapped up La Voiture Noire. However, several sources in the industry told CNBC that the luxury auto was purchased by former Volkswagen Group chairman Ferdinand Piech, who is known for his collection of high-performance cars. According to Bugatti, La Voiture Noire is “more than a modern interpretation” of the old Type 57 SC Atlantic, of famous work of Jean Bugatti, which only four units were ever the son of the company’s produced. Trump vows to boycott ‘Fake News’ networks

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump is threatening to boycott mainstream media by refusing to appear on their airwaves during the 2020 debates after Democrats said they’d bar Fox News from hosting its debates. Trump declared he wouldn’t participate in debates hosted by “Fake News Networks” during the 2020 campaign season, in retaliation for Democrats’ announcement they would refuse to allow Fox News to moderate any of their party’s debates. The Democratic National Committee declared Fox

News would not “serve as a media partner” for any of its candidates’ debates in 2020 following a New Yorker report detailing an “inappropriate relationship” between the Trump administration and Fox. “The network is not in a position to host a fair and neutral debate for our candidates,” DNC chairman Tom Perez said in a statement released to media on Wednesday. While this show of defiance is not new – the DNC made the same choice in 2016, claiming Fox’s conservative bias would prevent them from getting a fair shake – the

New Yorker report goes one step further, claiming Fox is “the closest we’ve come to having state TV,” quoting an “expert on presidential studies” …whatever that is. According to the New Yorker, the late Fox News founder Roger Ailes had tipped Trump off to debate questions; the president’s frequent Fox News appearances and his hiring of multiple former Fox News personalities (including Heather Nauert as State Department spokesperson and Bill Shine as White House communications director) are held up as proof of – you guessed March 8, 2019

those who hate him. Then again, Trump needs attention at least as severely as CNN needs ratings, some pointed out. Trump’s supporters reliably cheered the move, while his detractors echoed the DNC’s decision. It was a preview of the carnage sure to characterize the coming election season.

Tim ‘Apple’ Cook is latest in Trump’s long list of mangled names.

By Desert Star Staff A lot of people have trouble remembering names, but Donald Trump seems to take it to a new level, managing to mangle Apple CEO Tim Cook’s name right to his face in what is just the latest such blunder for the US president. While there’s no telling just how many famous figures Trump has forgotten the name of during his presidency, here is a list of some of his most notable and public name bloopers: Tim Apple (Tim Cook) Trump called Apple CEO and one of the most recognizable figures in tech Tim Cook “Tim Apple” on Wednesday as the pair

sat before the press. “We appreciate it very much, Tim Apple,” Trump said as he sat next to Cook, who had a paper name tag in front of him that clearly read “Tim Cook.” Marillyn Lockheed (Marillyn Hewson) It’s actually not the first time the president has mistaken a person’s second name for the company they work for. In March 2018, Trump called Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson “Marillyn Lockheed” while introducing her at the White House. Mike Bolton (John Bolton) Even Trump’s own staff are not exempt from the odd name switch; he has repeatedly referred to his National Security Advisor as “Mike” Bolton, instead of John. This particular blunder is common for poor Johnnot-Mike Bolton. According to the New York Times, he “does not have the same relationship with Mr. Trump that he had with Mr. Bush,” with the president repeatedly calling him “Mike” among White House aides. Ron Ryan (Paul Ryan) And it’s not only presidential staffers that suffer this affliction: Trump extends the dubious honor

to senior Republicans. Before he resigned, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan was repeatedly referred to as “Ron” by the president during a praising speech in “Ron’s” own hometown, no less. Ouch. Steve McCarthy (Kevin McCarthy) In January, President Trump confusingly referred to Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as “Steve,” before then motioning to an actual Steve, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, to come over. Whether he thought both men were

genuine Steves is not clear. Mike Messer (Luke Messer) Mike is a preferred name for the president as he also called a Republican from Indiana Luke Messer by the same moniker while thanking him for his support of the GOP tax bill at an event in Indianapolis in 2017. Wendy Wasserman Schultz (Debbie Wasserman Schultz) Don’t you hate when you try to call out a disgraced former head of the Democratic National Committee in front of your 60 million Twitter

followers, but you don’t know her first name? Yeah, that happened to Trump last April when he publicly denounced “Wendy” Wasserman Schultz for her role in the DNC Server scandal. The tweet was of course later deleted and replaced with a corrected version. CBC (Customs and Border Protection) Last August Trump repeatedly called Customs and Border Protection (CBP) the wrong acronym – not once, but EIGHT times throughout his ‘Salute to the Heroes’ speech.

constructed a simulation of Planet 9 that would most likely cause our solar system to look the way it does now, by preventing the TNOs’ destruction or banishment to interstellar space. Second, the simulation predicted that there’s a process called ‘resonance hopping’ by which a TNO bounces between stable orbits. Resonance hopping can prevent TNOs from being forced out of the solar system. In each simulation, the team tested different scenarios for Planet 9 to study whether that version of the planet, complete with its gravitational forces, resulted in the same solar

system that we have today. “From that set of simulations, we found out that there are preferred versions of Planet Nine that make the TNO stay stable for longer, so it increases the probability that our solar system exists the way it does,” Becker said. “Through these computer simulations, we were able to determine which realization of Planet Nine creates our solar system — the whole caveat here being if Planet Nine is real,” she added. Researchers also tested the orbital resonance of TNOs with Planet 9, which occurs when “objects in a system periodically exert gravitational forces upon each other that causes the objects to line up in a pattern.” March 8, 2019

Becker and her team found that sometimes Neptune will knock a TNO out of its resonance but, instead of sending it on a collision course with the sun, something – Planet 9 perhaps – catches it and “confines it into a different resonance.” “The ultimate goal would be to directly see Planet Nine — to take a telescope, point it at the sky, and see reflected light from the sun bouncing off of Planet Nine,” said Becker. “Since we haven’t yet been able to find it, despite many people looking, we’re stuck with these kinds of indirect methods.” The search for the elusive planet has caused quite a stir over the last couple of months. Most recently, many

outlets ran stories that NASA had ‘admitted’ its existence, although this isn’t entirely true. “If a planet is there, it’s extremely distant and will stay that way (with no chance – in case you’re wondering – of ever colliding with Earth, or bringing “days of darkness”),” NASA said in a statement. “It is a possible “Planet Nine” -- a world perhaps ten times the mass of Earth and 20 times farther from the sun than Neptune. The signs so far are indirect, mainly its gravitational footprints, but that adds up to a compelling case nonetheless.” Sorry, conspiracy theorists, you’ll have to find another reason for the world to end. Luckily, there’s no shortage of ammunition.

‘The Wife’ on DVD & ‘Cats’ at Pantages

“The Wife” Jane Anderson wrote the screenplay for “The Wife,” based on Meg Wolitzer’s famous novel. It is a bittersweet story about Joan and Joe Castleman (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) who have been together for 40 years. The film begins as Joe gets a phone call telling him he has won the Nobel Prize for literature. He is overjoyed, Joan seems less

so. The reason for her stoic, reserved reaction to the good news becomes clear through a series of flashbacks. Soon the couple is on their way to Stockholm to accept the coveted award along with their son David (Max Irons, the son of Jeremy Irons), an aspiring writer. It is clear that David wants to receive some recognition for his work from his self-absorbed father,

but it is Joan who reassures him, not dear old dad. On their flight to Sweden, they are approached by Nathaniel Bone (Christian Slater) who is eager to write Joe’s biography. Joe doesn’t want to be bothered, but Joan, ever the diplomat, tells Bone that this is not a good time to talk about it. Through the flashbacks, we learn that Joe was Joan’s

Coyote Stageworks’ Tenth Season Finale: Greater Tuna

By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, CA – Coyote StageWorks, the Coachella Valley-based award-winning Actors’ Equity professional theater company, will conclude its Tenth Anniversary season with the comedy “Greater Tuna” that will run for nine performances from March 22-31, 2019 at the Palm Springs Art Museum’s Annenberg Theater. “Greater Tuna” is a hilarious send-up of small-town morals and mores. Set in a fictional small town in Texas, this popular comedy stars two skillful, transformative actors who will take on 22 roles as they portray the town’s wacky inhabitants. “Greater Tuna” was written by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and Ed Howard and will star Alan Denny and Chuck Yates. The production will be directed by Larry Raben. “Greater Tuna” was the very first production Coyote StageWorks mounted ten years ago. “In 2009 we started our production company with this hilarious show, and our audience members have been asking us to restage it for years,” said Chuck Yates, Founding Artistic Director of Coyote StageWorks. “The play is a significant challenge, as the two actors eventually play 22 different roles in a breakneck fashion. We are thrilled to mount this production at the Annenberg Theater and end our season the way we started this company ten years ago.” About Greater Tuna Set in the fictional town of Tuna, Texas, the “thirdsmallest” town in the state, “Greater Tuna” explores the town’s quirky inhabitants– men, women, children and animals. It is an affectionate comment on small-town, Southern life and attitudes but also a withering satire. “Greater Tuna” was originally produced in 1981 in Austin, Texas. One year after its premiere, “Greater Tuna” opened Off Broadway, ran for

over a year, and went on to tour major theaters all over America and spots overseas for the next thirty-some years, becoming one of the most produced plays in American theatre history. It features two actors creating the entire population of Tuna through quick-change artistry, different costumes, vocal characterizations, and inventive voicework. About the Actors Alan Denny has been a member of Coyote StageWorks company and is reprising his roles in Greater Tuna for the 10th Anniversary of Coyote StageWorks. He also served on the Board of Directors for seven years. Denny has been involved in the entertainment industry for many years, wearing many hats. He has appeared in productions such as: DA, The Rocky Horror Show, Jesus Christ Superstar, Shenandoah, Strider, and Chicago. Other shows from his time in New York are, Marat/Sade, As Is, Outward Bound, The Tempest, Closer Than Ever, Fashion Police, Box Office Poison, and Kiss Me Quick Before the Lava Reaches the Village. While living in New York, Denny was Music Director, Founding Member, and Board member of the Eclectic Theatre Co. where he wrote, directed, played piano and performed in several musical revues and plays. He also worked with three other NY theatre companies; Love Creek, Red Light District, and Current Shakespeare. Not only sticking to being onstage, he has also designed and assisted behind the scenes doing everything from sets, costumes, props, and marketing materials to working the box office. Alan currently sings with A Cabbello and Modern Men, the Coachella Valley Men’s Chorus. He moved to the area 6 years ago and currently lives in Cathedral City. Chuck Yates – Five-time

Outside of Coyote StageWorks, he performed in Tru (Invisible Theatre, Tucson. MAC Nomination Best Actor) and Into the Woods (Musical Theatre University). “A Room with a View” - A Sight for Sore Eyes and Ears

By Lisa Lyons If you’ve never had the opportunity to be present at the recording of a radio drama, it is something you should take advantage of, especially if you are a fan of the spoken word and life in Los Angeles. L.A. Theatre Works (LATW) is an artistic enterprise that gathers some of the best working actors available to perform adapted versions of books, movies, plays and sometimes original material which are then recorded in front of a live audience. Once recorded, the works are available for purchase on CD, mp3 and are also archived on the LATW website for podcasting. I had the pleasure of attending the recent production of “A Room with a View,” based on the novel by E.M. Forster and lovingly adapted for radio by BBC Radio 4’s Kate McAll. McAll, who staged “Daniel Deronda” last season for LATW, has hit the mark again with a brilliant cast and Spain production. In a serendipitous twist of fate, Julian Sands (who played the character of George Emerson in the Oscarnominated 1985 film) returns to inhabit Forster’s world but this time as George’s father, Mr. Emerson. The staging for this recorded drama is a simple lineup of chairs upstage in front of a scrim, and music stands with sensitive mics that each actor stands at Downstage. A sound effects artist is seated off to one side providing the necessary effects (brilliant work by Brian Wallace), and appropriate backdrops are projected behind the cast members. It all works wonderfully, and you find that the exquisite visuals of the original film

are barely missed. If you are not familiar with the story, it tells of a fateful trip to Venice by the beautiful Miss Lucy Honeychurch and her chaperone and cousin Miss Charlotte Bartlett. When the pensione they are booked at turns out to be a disappointment and does not have the promised room with a view of the Arno River, a socially-mobile tradesman Mr. Emerson and his thoughtful son George offer to switch rooms with the women and the die is cast. Hearts will move, minds will change, and love will, in the end, surmount all obstacles. As the young lovers, Eleanor Tomlinson as Lucy and Eugene Simon as George, are completely and adorably perfect. She is patrician, flame-haired and has a fine vocal instrument; He is soulful and shyly persistent in his pursuit of her. When they kissed (and they actually did, rather than leave it to the effects designer), you could hear the audience heave a collective romantic sigh. As the genteel, slightly impoverished Charlotte, Rosalind Ayres captured both sides of her personality – the reluctant realist and the romantic dreamer who is the unlikely heroine of the love story. As the senior Emerson, Julian Sands captures the dual sides of a man who, though a “rude mechanical” by profession, is a philosopher-poet by nature. The year in which the book is set in the early 1900s of English society, was a time of great movement within the classes; freed from the restrictions of the caste system and able to move into the rarefied air of the nouveau riche, fortunes were earned that made such movement possible for

the first time in centuries. In the supporting roles of Freddy Honeychurch, Lucy’s cheeky younger brother, and her Mother, a kind and broadminded widow, are nicely enacted by Alastair James Murden and Edita Brychta. Both actors also portray a variety of characters, as do Moira Quirk (as the Misses Allen) and Matthew Wolf as Lucy’s erstwhile fiancé, the pompous and controlling Cecil Vyse Special mention goes to Darren Richardson as Reverend Beebe the vicar always in search of a spot of tea. Forster created an indelible “tableau vivant” of people we really do want to know what happened to after the curtain descends. In addition to the direction of McAll, the production is blessed with Recording Engineer and Sound Designer Mark Holden and Senior Producer Ronn Lipkin The opening night audience at the James Bridges Theater located on the UCLA Campus gave the cast a well-deserved standing ovation and were delighted when several cast members remained in the lobby to meet and greet their fans. As is their tradition, LATW will make the recording of “A Room with a View” available soon for purchase in CD or mp3 format, as well as via podcast and an archived version for listening online. In a world of portable culture, perhaps there is a new role for radio podcasts in opening the ears and eyes of new generations to the beauty of literature. If so, LATW is poised to be the theater of choice for lovers of the word. Check out their current season of productions on their website at www.latw.org.
