Tell me more: Electronic artist The Album Leaf is back with Future Falling, his first album since 2016’s masterful Between Waves (not including a number of film scores and re-issues spearheaded by Jimmy LaValle during that period). The ambitious Future Falling features 10 immersive tracks that will appeal to fans of chillwave, ambient and downtempo electronica music.

The feeling of listening to several tracks — notably the openers “Prologue” and “Dust Collects” and poignant closer “Epilogue” — is one of loss, grief and mortality. The aptly-titled “Stride” is a more uptempo track that expands the reach of the mostly-instrumental record. The luxurious and absolutely gorgeous track “Afterglow” features guest vocalist Kimbra; later Bat for Lashes makes an equally strong vocal contribution via the otherworldly “Near.” A North American headlining tour featuring The Album Leaf in support of the new album will launch on May 13 in San Diego.

Tell me more: The first American band to perform behind the Iron Curtain, Blood, Sweat & Tears performed a string of dates in Yugoslavia, Romania and Poland in June and July 1970. Many of the concerts were recorded using a portable 8-track machine; an American film crew filmed the shows for a planned documentary as well. However, the film company that financed the project closed its doors during post-production and members of BS&T didn’t know how to to retrieve the materials. Fast forward 50 years and director John Scheinfeld and a tenacious team tracked down many of the recordings for the newly-released 2023 documentary “What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears?” and accompanying

Title: Live at Berkeley 1971 (Iconic Artists Group / Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Buffalo Springfield, Manassas

Tell me more: Following the release of his second solo album in June 1971, Stephen Stills embarked on his first solo tour. During that “The Memphis Horns Tour” Stills would open each night with a solo-acoustic set, and then close with an electric one.

Now more than 50 years after completing that historic trek, a 14-track collection of previously unreleased performances captured over two nights at the Berkeley Community Theater on Aug. 20 and 21, 1971 has been released shining a well-deserved spotlight on the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. The marvelous title features inspired performances of a myriad of the singer-songwriter/ guitar great’s songs. The Dallas, Texas native kicks it off with a freewheeling take on “Love The One You’re With.” The acousticflavored “Do For The Others” and “Jesus Gave Love Away For Free,” shimmering harmoniesrich “You Don’t Have to Cry” and “The Lee Shore” (the latter two tracks feature David Crosby sharing vocals with Stills) are early standouts on the set.

A medley of “49 Bye-Byes/ For What It’s Worth” (featuring Stills on piano), the bluescentered “Know You’ve Got To Run,” horn section-anchored R&B gems “Lean On Me” and “Cherokee” shine on the second half of the live album. The original recording was produced by Stills and recorded by Bill Halverson; the new reissue was produced by Kevin McCormick and Stills. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

National Group Defends CA End-of-Life Option Amid Lawsuit

A national nonprofit organization is speaking out about a federal lawsuit filed last week against California officials, challenging the state’s End of Life Option Act.

The plaintiffs claim that the revised law, which took effect last year, discriminates against people with disabilities by violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.

CEO of Compassion & Choices, Kim Callinan, pointed out that a disability alone doesn’t qualify a person for medical aid in dying.

She added that a national poll shows it is an end-of-life care options people believe should be available.

“The current lawsuit that came forward makes claims inconsistent with what the data demonstrate,” said Callinan. “We know that eight out of ten people with a disability want and support the option of medical aid in dying.”

Ten states now authorize doctors to offer mentally sound, terminally ill adults the option to request prescription medication they could chooseto die gently in their sleep if their suffering becomes unbearable.

Studies show that the most common diagnosis among terminally ill people who qualify for medical aid in dying is cancer. Since January, bills to authorize medical assistance for passing have been introduced in 14 states.

Dr. Chandana Banerjee - an associate professor who teaches palliative medicine and a physician who practices medical aid in dying, both at City of Hope National Medical Center - said it’s vital that people understand what medical assistance in dying is and isn’t.

People with disabilities who would qualify for the law must have a prognosis of six

months or less to live - and Banerjee said even then, they still may not be eligible.

“There are several other guardrails and eligibility criteria that these dying patients must meet, and then follow a multistep process to get the prescriptions filled,” said Banerjee, “contrary to the belief no one gets to wake up one morning and

access medical aid in dying.”

The law requires an attending physician to advise the patient about “feasible alternatives or additional treatment options, including, but not limited to, comfort care, hospice care, palliative care, and pain control.”

Studies from nine jurisdictions where medical

aid in dying is authorized show that more than a third of terminally ill adults who receive prescriptions for medical aid doesn’t take the medication.

negative psychological health is also associated with health behaviors linked to an increased risk for heart disease and stroke, such as smoking, lower levels of physical activity, unhealthy diet, being overweight, and not taking medications as prescribed.”

Studies have found some people, including people of color, may face a greater risk of poor health outcomes due to chronic stress, depression, and anxiety linked to psychosocial stressors, particularly those related to social and economic inequality, discrimination, systemic racism, and other societal factors. For example, a study published in the “Journal of the American Heart Association” found U.S. adults who reported feeling highly discriminated against at work had an increased risk of developing high blood pressure compared to those who reported low discrimination at work.

* Get plenty of good, restful sleep. Set a regular bedtime, turn off or dim electronics as bedtime approaches, and form a wake-up routine.

* Make connections and stay in touch. Reach out and connect regularly with family and friends, or engage in activities to meet new people.

* Practice mindful movement. Many gentle mindful practices like yoga and Tai chi can be done anywhere without special equipment to help ease your soul and muscles.

* Spend time with your furry friend. Companion animals are often beloved family members, and research shows pets may help reduce physiological reactions to stress and support improved physical activity.

The American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health, identified a strong interconnection between the mind, heart, and body in its scientific statement, “Psychological Health, Well-Being, and the MindHeart-Body Connection.”

“Research has clearly demonstrated negative

psychological factors, personality traits, and mental health disorders can negatively impact cardiovascular health,” said volunteer chair of the statement writing committee Glenn N. Levine, M.D., FAHA, master clinician and professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and chief of the cardiology section at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.

“The body’s biological reaction to stress, anxiety, and other types of poor mental health can manifest physically through an irregular heart rate or rhythm, increased blood pressure, and inflammation. In addition,

“Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being,” Levine said. “It affects how we think, feel and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices.

Practicing mindfulness in all forms allows one to be more aware of and have more control over emotional responses to daily life experiences.”

Consider these tips from Levine to improve your mindheart-body connection:

* Practice meditation regularly. Even simple actions such as communing with nature or sitting quietly and focusing on your breath can positive impact.

* Work it out. Regular physical activity - a recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise, 75 minutes of vigorous activity, or a mix of both weekly - can help relieve tension, anxiety, and depression and give you an immediate “high.”

“Wellness is more than simply the absence of disease,” Levine said. “It is an active process toward a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling life. When we strive to reduce negative aspects of psychological health, we promote a positive and healthy state of being.”

MOTHER’S DAY & MERCURY STATIONS DIRECT

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 14 and Mercury stations direct that evening at six degrees Taurus. We may need to be more aware than usual in honoring mother on Mother’s Day this year. When Mercury is stationing, our minds seem to fall into a semi-pralaya (sleep). We can be so internal as to not be present. Communication with mother (whether here or in heaven) is most important on Mother’s Day. Wherever they are their hearts are aware, open, alive and listening. It’s important to offer words of kindness, recognition and gratitude.

All mothers, an assignment, a spiritual undertaking and a job description, are constantly learning how to be mothers. The task of mothering is demanding, arduous, daunting, difficult, confusing, filled with suffering and paradox. Mothering is an Initiation, actually. Some (adult) children are estranged from their mothers. Such sadness! It’s good in this case to remember the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, saint of Right Human Relations. “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.”

In our mothers’ later years, they will need to look to us for guidance. Let us promise this to them, safeguarding our mothers with understanding, compassion and love.

Mercury remains in its retrograde shadow until June 1st. We remain quite inward until then, the world gradually coming into clear alignment. We continue to order & organizing resources, considering our values – what we value, what is of value, ourselves as valuable.

RISA’S STARS

When stationing (being still) direct, it takes Mercury three days to reorient itself to moving forward. Very slowly we too begin to move forward, putting things back into place again. We no longer feel like we are walking backward into a mist.

Although Mercury will no longer be retrograde, Pluto is retrograde with more retrogrades to follow. Mid-June Saturn retrogrades and in July we will have five retrograde planets. The most important will be Venus, retrograding at 28 degrees Leo. By August we will have seven planets retrograde, including both Mercury and Venus. Knowing this information we can prepare for our future more efficiently and effectively.

Autumn will be a season of inner observation, scrutiny, examination, study, reflection, re-assessment and contemplation (the meditation phase of Libra).

ARIES: As we move through the season of spring, tend to all promises, follow all rules, act like a Taurus (which may feel a bit daunting and restrictive but it is very illuminating) and make sure that no resistance, aversion or opposition colors your attitude and ways of being. Honor is most important and one progresses more easily when the virtues of patience, understanding and grace are cultivated. These become of great value to your sense of self in the months to come.

TAURUS: Your energy is up and down, high and low, there and not there. Your responsibilities however remain and each day more and more appear. You would rather turn away, find friends to chat with, take short trips to the bank and back, garden, and either envision or research all that’s needed for the future.

When responsibilities and the need for freedom collide, it’s best to simply focus on goals. Or garden. Then you can continue to dream. A gate soon opens. Its arch is all twelve signs of the zodiac.

GEMINI: Heavens! There are two distinctly polarized situations occurring. One keeps you hidden, protected and behind the scenes and the other out and about in the world. Here all your values are apparent and you talk about them openly because sharing them helps define you. You are at times pulled into quietude and silence, a sort of repose before the outer world or the storm or Sun or something calls to you. Perhaps it’s a lot of praise. Or a move. Or a book.

CANCER: Many consider your valuable resources and wonder if they can be used to redirect a group or a committee or a village or a town. And you wonder if how you are using your resources efficiently for both long- and short-term needs. Then family needs crop up and you worry and fret and don’t sleep nights and the past reoccurs and you’re sad sometimes and need help to realign. It’s hard to ask for help. And hard to trust it will come. Ask anyway. Always when we ask, it is given.

LEO: Each day there is more and more clarity about your work and purpose in the world. And each day you feel more courage to pursue the goals of freedom and justice, to fight for what’s right, to realize that a values shift is taking place in your life and this shift may create a personal future you only hoped for. A new two-year cycle has begun and it’s calling up all hopes, dreams and wishes you’ve ever had and asking you to follow your heart. Where is it (your heart)?

VIRGO: The past years have been challenging for Virgos. There’s been a

shifting of structures, a sense of being under a taskmaster and you’ve had many tasks and responsibilities to tend to.

Soon, this will shift a bit and you will feel a new sense of freedom and relief from the taxing demands and tests undergone. What actually will occur is a new path forward appears. Saturn in Pisces calls you to a new order of things. You quietly celebrate.

LIBRA: A more restrained and thoughtful view of life is quietly beginning to take hold of your thoughts, actions and feelings. This is good, though it could feel restrictive. Simply consider it as another step in growing up, being responsible, learning how to tend clearheadedly to the demands of life and how to act with more diplomacy, sensitivity and refinement. There’s a struggle for balance, a struggle to be heard and understood. There is no compromise. Be strong and call for courage. Forgiveness helps.

SCORPIO: You had obligations. Then your dreams appeared and disrupted all your obligations. And it became clear that you had to choose. And then relationship issues (questions?) cropped up and you had more realties than you could handle. A burning ground has appeared. Something is changing within. It’s pushing you to break all previous habits, to drop the past and all previous patterned ways of being. Follow this. It’s a call from your future. Don’t resist. Three steps up to a door appears.

SAGITTARIUS: Tremendous work was called for this past year and it will continue. If you take each day and work slowly through it (like a Taurus), then you will come to the end of each day with feelings of great success and pride in what you have accomplished. Is there

someone special contacting you? Or the possibility of money from someone close? Be prepared, after a small respite, for new work to appear. High energy will be called for. Rest for now. Before the new lighted path appears.

CAPRICORN: You have presented yourself this year as a great server of those in need. This is discipleship work. There is another side to you - the creative side - activated in gardens, woods, fields and meadows. It can be found with hands in the earth, plants with deep roots, and a pantry (or lunchbox) filed with sweet and savory homemade foods. You need comfort and safeguards as you serve others. We are always and only asked to come forth with our gifts when there is a need. Those you are serving are deeply grateful.

AQUARIUS: There is a focus on relationships, whether it’s friends, acquaintances, or the many people in your life seeking your attention. You have a need for care and intimacy with another. Sometimes needs make us feel unsure of ourselves. But you have confidence to ask for what is needed. Be aware some people will not be able to respond. But many more will. You want to have a clean well-lighted place of security and beauty. Many things about home and resources will occur in the coming months. They are good things. You can rest in this assurance.

PISCES: You are being presented with a greater field of recognition. This is a new expanded stage of work needed for humanity. Know you are fully capable and have the essential qualities and gifts to fulfill the situations being offered. You will rely more on your gifts as you move forward into your future and make correct decisions. There is an army of angels and supporters ready to assist you in this work. You are not alone. Courage and confidence present themselves. Wear them like a mantle and a crown.

HOA Damaged Me, My HOA Suspended - Must I Pay Assessments?

Kelly, when is it legal not to pay HOA dues/fees because an HOA is not fulfilling its duties?

I’ve had emergency leaks and made calls and sent emails that they never returned. I have had animal control issues that they do not attend to unless I go into the office - I have proof of emails sent. Thank you again, V.B., Chula Vista

Dear V.B.: I am sorry your HOA is not responding to your concerns. It is possible that a homeowner could have financial claims against their HOA due to problems such as unrepaired issues. However, homeowners may not use offsetting claims against their HOA as an excuse to not pay assessments. This issue was resolved in the 1994 case of Park Place Estates v. Naber, in which Mr. Naber had some complaints about repair work completed by the HOA. He argued that his offsetting monetary claims against the HOA allowed him to withhold his assessment payments, but the appellate court said that the trial court was correct in not allowing Mr. Naber to use alleged HOA errors to justify his nonpayment of assessments.

V.B., you may or may not have legitimate claims against your HOA, but you still must pay your assessments regardless of any monetary claim you might pursue against

the HOA. Sincerely, Kelly

Hello Kelly, our HOA was suspended by the Secretary of State and Franchise Tax Board. The HOA continues to ask me for their dues, but I have been told that I do not need to pay them since they are suspended and no longer viable. The treasurer that is asking me for the dues is not the treasurer on file with the Secretary of State and no change in treasurer was ever filed. Also, the HOA has collected dues for each year since from all homeowners. Is this legal? Thank you for your time. S.H., Grass Valley.

Dear S.H.: Incorporated associations must file state tax returns annually with the Franchise Tax Board and at least every other year file SI100 and SI-CID forms with the Secretary of State. Associations failing to do so will eventually find out that their corporate status has been suspended. The state refuses to recognize the existence of a corporation during the suspension. A huge consequence is that courts will not allow suspended corporations to file, maintain, or defend lawsuits, so the HOA could find its lawsuit dismissed or a default entered against it as a defendant. Another problem is that while suspended the name used by the corporation is not recognized by the state as in use, so anyone can reserve the name and use it for a different corporation. A final consequence is that if the HOA

was suspended due to failure to file tax returns, Revenue and Taxation Code Section 23304.1(a) says that during the HOA’s suspension due to not filing tax returns any contracts with the HOA can be canceled by the other party - but cannot be canceled by the HOA. In spite of all that, your HOA CC&Rs still require you

to pay your assessments, and you should not withhold assessment payments. Don’t risk incurring liens and collection fees. Best, Kelly

7 Killed In Texas Rampage

Texas - A Land Rover drove into a group of people waiting at a bus stop outside a shelter for immigrants and homeless people in Brownsville, Texas, on Sunday. Police said seven people died in the rampage, and at least 11 were injured.

Martin Sandoval, an investigator with the Brownsville Police Department, said the accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. Sunday at a bus stop near the Ozanam Center, a shelter for immigrants in the border city. He added that the background still needs to be clarified.

According to the director of the Ozanam Center, Victor Maldonado, most

victims were Venezuelan men. Shortly after the terrible accident, Maldonado watched the images from the surveillance cameras:

“What we see in the video is that this SUV, a Range Rover, just ran the traffic light about 30 meters away and sped through the people sitting there at the bus stop.”

A man was arrested at the scene and is now in custody; police told reporters. He is also being treated in a hospital and tested for alcohol and drugs. Sunday’s incident came just hours after Texas had already been overshadowed by another tragedy: a shooting at an outlet mall in Dallas that killed eight people shortly before.

Advocating for Mental Health as a Universal Child Right

Mental health and psychological wellbeing are essential for children, adolescents, and communities to thrive. However, with crises in locations such as Ukraine, Syria, Turkey, and Afghanistan, the mental health and well-being of children and young people worldwide are causes for concern.

Globally, more than 1 in 7 adolescents ages 1019 live with mental health conditions, according to UNICEF. However, children and youth globally, including those in the United States, face challenges bridging the gap regarding mental health needs and proper access to quality services.

The COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with school closures and disruptions in learning, impacted nearly 1.6 billion children globally. In addition, anxiety,

depression, and other mental health conditions actively threaten children’s ability to be healthy and happy. Addressing critical mental health and psychosocial issues to support their development can allow them to meaningfully participate in society.

Together, UNICEF and UNICEF USA are advocating locally, nationally, and globally to provide children with the tools they need to support mental health. On a global level, the organizations are calling on Congress to pass the Mental Health in International Development and Humanitarian Settings (MINDS) Act, the first federal legislation that addresses mental health and psychosocial support through U.S. foreign assistance. It focuses primarily on populations with increased risk factors for developing mental health disorders,

Gran Fuhr Golf Tournament 2023

The Third Annual Grand Fuhr Celebrity Golf Tournament took place on May 5th and 6th at the Desert Willow Golf Course. Along with hosting the tournament, they provided a delicious lunch, including BBQ chicken and pork, salads, chili, desserts, and refreshing beverages. The event’s main objective was to raise funds for the Betty Ford Center, with the proceeds directed toward the Children’s Programs. Susan Ford Bales, daughter of President Gerald and First Lady Betty Ford, expressed that her mother had a soft spot for the Children’s Programs, and thousands of children have benefited from

the Center over the years.

Bales shared a heartwarming story of a young lady who once attended the Betty Ford Center as a child and is now pursuing a medical program in college. The valuable lessons she learned at the center have stayed with her into adulthood, particularly the importance of seeking help when necessary. The center’s programs were integral in helping her overcome her challenges. Grant and Lisa Fuhr thanked Bales for her assistance by giving her a thoughtful gift. The Betty Ford Center is commemorating its 40th anniversary in the Desert.

The event featured notable celebrities from various fields,

such as sports, entertainment, and modeling, including some who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Among the football legends were Marcus Allen, Damon Allen, Seth Joyner, and Mark Rypian, to name a few. Baseball enthusiasts would recognize the names of Kenny Lofton and Ozzie Smith, while hockey fans would be familiar with Jeremy Roenick, Gary Lehman, and Barnard Nicolls. Basketball also had its representatives in Ron Harper and Shasa Vujacic.

Several renowned singers and entertainers like Dave Brock, Shawn Drover, Arabian Prince, and Ann Liguori graced the event. Awards were presented to players with the

longest drives and putts, and the victors received trophies. The winners were announced by the host, Grant Fuhr, and emcee, Dan McGrath. The tournament attracted almost 175 players who relished the opportunity to play golf with these esteemed celebrities. More than 40 renowned personalities attended the event to lend their support to this noble cause.

Before the golf tournament, a reception party was hosted at Hotel Paseo on Friday night.

The hotel arranged a buffetstyle meal that was served on three long tables. During the cocktail hour, the guests enjoyed the performance of Jojo Malagio. Emcee Gino

Lamont introduced Host Grant Fuhr, who announced all the sponsors. A live auction was held to raise funds, followed by a silent auction in a separate room where sports autographs, art, jeweled purses, and jewelry were displayed. Each group had a celebrity and a golf pro. The weather was great, and the golf course was in pristine condition. All had a fun time. Grant and Lisa Fuhr can take pride in the tournament’s success and the money raised to benefit the children’s Programs at the Hazelden Betty Ford Center. As a result, thousands of families have been helped with their addiction to alcohol and drugs.

Like many other groups, said Strat Maloma, associate director for advocacy and community engagement for AARP California, some older adults face challenges with internet access and speed.

“Much like electricity, running water, internet access has become a basic necessity for modern life,” he said. “Disparities exist especially for older adultsaccess to high-speed internet, or whether it’s disparities in access and the importance of having high-speed internet access.”

As of last year, the Federal Communications Commission estimated that at least 3.7 million California households are eligible for its Affordable Connectivity Program, a $30 broadband discount offered to

low-income families. However, only 1.4 million had enrolled.

CA aims to reduce the “digital divide.” SAVE 15% Use a broom instead of a hose.

At the workshop he attended, Maloma said, the attendees were divided into small groups and had the chance to participate in guided dialogue about their technology use. He said it’s significant for all Californians - especially older adults - to share their experiences and be included in conversations about how the state could use federal funds for broadband.

“What we’d like to hear from them is what their experiences are when it comes to having access, affordability, to broadband and internet services,” he said, “but we’d also like to hear what would help create a situation of equitability for them, their communities when it comes to having access to broadband and high-speed internet access.”

In 2020, 10% of Californians reported not having a desktop, laptop, or computer at home. That figure is slightly higher, at 15%, for Black and Latino households. Access was especially limited among lowincome families, with 23% not having internet or a device.

We’re in a drought. We all need to reduce our water use by 15 percent. That’s about 12 gallons per person per day.

It’s easier than you think. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your patio, sidewalk and driveway, and save on average 6 gallons every minute.

court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (877) 440-4460 or visit this Internet Web site www.mkconsultantsinc.com, using the file number assigned to this case 230109009. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Notice To Tenant: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (877) 440-4460, or visit this internet website site www.tlssales.info, using the file number assigned to this case 230109009 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.

Homeboy Expands into a New Industry – Recycling Clothes

navigates a forklift around hundreds of boxes of clothes in a Commerce warehouse. Some are tattered and worn out; others haven’t been used. Her job: to keep them from going to a landfill.

Sera works for Homeboy Threads, a new for-profit arm of the missiondriven organization that rehabilitates and trains formerly gang-affiliated and incarcerated people.

“I learned the forklift, I learned how to input weights and data entry into the computers,” Sera says of her job. “I learned how to sell things online, on e-com. I never, never in my life thought I would know how to do any of that stuff.”

Sera started as a trainee with Homeboy Industries a year and a half ago and became the first full-time employee at Homeboy Threads. Now she supervises the next cohort of trainees and teaches them what she’s learned.

The trucks bringing in clothes for Sera to sort are filled with company inventory that didn’t sell, rolls of fabric that didn’t get used, or worn materials that customers returned to the store.

Homeboys can profit in a few ways: Sort the clothes for a company and hand them back; fix or sew new dresses and sell them; sell the raw materials to be recycled into a new medium, such as insulation.

Sorting through clothing is time-consuming and requires effort. In addition, it involves determining which pieces can be reused, repaired, or recycled.

Some of the clothes in the warehouse belong to the clothing company GUESS. It worked with Homeboy for over a year in a pilot project before publicly announcing its launch last week.

Homeboy has accepted 200,000 pounds of clothing since December 2021 to prevent landfill waste..”

Textiles are the fastestgrowing waste in California’s

landfills. The average U.S. consumer throws away 81 pounds of clothing annually and buys new clothes every 5-6 days, a significant increase from 40 years ago. But Zwicke says he’s seeing more consumers and companies who want to know where their

unsellable clothes end up.

“Corporations are more sensitive to the idea now that there is no ‘away’ when you throw something away. It’s going somewhere.”

With California’s new Responsible Textile Recovery Act of 2023, there may be an increase in demand

for certified collectors to gather and recycle clothes and textiles for companies.

Homeboy Threads is launching at a perfect time. Our workforce development mission aims to create jobs by addressing a market gap focusing on manual labor.

Understanding Maternal Health and Hypertension

FAMILY FEATURES

Acommon misconception is high blood pressure (HBP), or hypertension, rarely affects women. However, nearly half of all adults with HBP are women.

While HBP isn’t directly related to gender, a woman’s life stages like pregnancy, pregnancy prevention (birth control) and menopause can increase the risk of developing HBP.

HBP is an important sign that preeclampsia, or severe high blood pressure during pregnancy, may be developing and testing may be needed to check both the mother and baby. Not all women have noticeable symptoms beyond high blood pressure, but when they do occur, they may include headaches, vision changes, abdominal pain or rapid swelling (edema). Black women of childbearing age are more than twice as likely to have uncontrolled blood pressure than their white counterparts, according to research featured in a special Go Red for Women issue of the “Journal of the American Heart Association.” Additionally, food insecurity, or lack of access to adequate healthy food, which is one of the social factors that may affect HBP risk, is higher among Hispanic and Black women compared to white women.

While delivery of the child is the only cure for preeclampsia, which affects 1 in 25 pregnancies in the United States, management of condition is based on several factors, including the overall health of the mother and the progress of the disease. Symptoms usually subside within six weeks of delivery. To help ensure a heart-healthy pregnancy, consider these tips. Education about healthy heart habits from the American Heart Association is nationally supported by Elevance Health Foundation.

Visit a health care provider regularly. A health care professional will monitor you and your baby at regular prenatal visits – monthly until 28 weeks then the frequency will increase to bi-weekly or weekly as the due date approaches. There is no proven way to prevent preeclampsia or test to predict the condition. Follow your health care team’s recommendations and check blood pressure and urine levels of protein regularly, if advised.

7 tips for a heart-healthy

pregnancy

Track blood pressure at home. To take readings, the American Heart Association recommends using a validated automatic, cuff-style bicep monitor. Avoid caffeine or exercise within 30 minutes before measuring and empty your bladder at least 5 minutes beforehand. Sit with your back straight and supported with your arm supported on a flat surface and the upper arm at heart level. Place the cuff directly above the bend in the elbow and don’t take the measurement over your clothes. Measure at the same time daily, such as morning and evening, and record the results to share with your doctor.

Take medication as prescribed. Some medications, including some heart medicines, may be risky for you or your fetus during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about what’s safe, what to do if you miss a dose and other drugs or supplements that may help improve or maintain your health. Never stop medications without approval.

Manage blood pressure through lifestyle modification. Limiting salt intake and getting regular

physical activity can help keep blood pressure in a healthy range.

Reduce stress and manage anxiety. Some ways to calm down include meditating, spending time in nature and enjoying other hobbies.

Monitor weight gain. Doctors will advise you how much weight is safe to gain based on your body mass index (BMI) before pregnancy. Normal weight women with a BMI of 18.5-24.9 who are pregnant with one baby are typically expected to gain 25-35 pounds. Avoid unhealthy habits. While pregnant, do not smoke, drink alcohol or use illegal drugs.

It’s important to know that women with preeclampsia are more likely to develop HBP and diabetes later in life. Research also shows having the condition increases the odds of heart failure, especially if preeclampsia happens in more than one pregnancy. Learn more about how HBP can impact pregnancy, and how to take control of your blood pressure, at heart.org/health-topics/high-blood-pressure.
