The ‘Flying Fortress’
Name of Plane. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Air Museum continues to provide amazing opportunities for our Valley Youth and their Parents. On April 24th, the B-17G Madras Maiden touched down at the Air Museum to provide rides in this legendary aircraft in the morning or tour this plane and the Museum in the after noon. These planes the Museum brings in are but a handful of planes still operating that flew during our wars. The B-17 was called the Flying Fortress, that was mainly used during WWII for dropping bombs on strategic
Instruments. Photo by Pat Krause targets. This plane was also used for Transport, Search and Rescue operations, Antisubmarine aircraft and more. The chance to see these airplanes firsthand is an opportunity to visit the history of aircraft. In addition to the planes they bring in from outside, there are a myriad of planes and autos from yesteryear to see. There is a huge library, Flight simulators that are really fun, and tours of all the planes. There are dozens that give a history of each plane as many of them actually flew or were a part of that period in history, so
they know it well and some speak from experience at the time. They also show movies if you want to sit and take a rest to see more. I had a chance to fly in the B-17 twice. The first time I could be in the front Gunner position that is a glass bubble that is just you and glass in the view. The second time I sat on the plane where I could see the bombs they drop, the guns on the sides and the equipment, they used to assist the pilot in flying the plane. Fascinating to see what our servicemen had to do during a war and to be able to see it
first hand. These are once in a lifetime opportunities to fly in these planes that someday will no longer be available as they are few and far between now. The Air Museum will be celebrating Memorial Day all weekend starting on Sat. th 27th where they will be doing a Ribbon Cutting on the new Kenneth P. Miles Hangar at 11 am. On Sunday the 28th they are opening a one-of-a-kind exhibit of Glider Planes used in WWII, including D-Day. What a thrill to see. Then on Mon. the 29th they are having the annual Flower Drop in honor of all those military
men and women who have lost their lives serving our country. Hundreds of people and children always come to fill the area hoping to catch one of the carnations that are dropped on the Museum grounds. A really special day for families of survivors, veterans and their families and young children to realize the importance air flight has paid in winning our wars and the lives lost in the effort. There are arts and crafts for kids, Food vendors, a beer tent and Live Music and presentations.

Bill to Limit Hospital Costs for NV Seniors Gets Hearing By Desert Star Staff CARSON CITY, Nev. — A hearing will be held this week for AB 183, a bill that would make sure seniors are charged lower Medicare rates by hospitals if they are injured in an accident in which someone else is at fault. Right now, some hospitals in Nevada charge patients for the full bill rather than the lower Medicare rates, based on the assumption that the victim will hire a lawyer to go after the responsible party’s insurance company. Bill Bradley, a consumer trial lawyer in Reno and a member of the Nevada Justice Association, said seniors on Medicare should get the benefit of the lower rates

Medicare has negotiated. “Medicare agreed to pay the bills on behalf of these people,” Bradley said. “These people paid for their Medicare contract, and for the hospital to unilaterally decide that it doesn’t have to bill Medicare is unfairly taking advantage of our senior citizen population.” Bradley said many hospitals refuse to bill Medicare in these cases. The University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas is an exception. If the patient recovers money from the other person’s insurance company, the patient will have to pay Medicare back. Opponents of the bill say hospitals have the right to refuse to bill Medicare because
the patient has the right to sue for the full amount of the bill. But Bradley argued that if the responsible party only has the minimum insurance coverage of $15,000, the patient is responsible for paying the rest. “Where there is not adequate insurance, lawyers try to approach these hospitals and explain that there wasn’t adequate insurance and ask the hospital to reduce its amount,” he said. “And sometimes the hospitals are willing to negotiate, and other times they aren’t.” According to Bradley, there is no national standard on how to deal with these types of situations. Rather, other states take a variety of approaches to the problem.
By Janice Gough Investors now face less favorable investment conditions, as many of the positive factors from past decades are slowing or reversing. As we consider some of the problems we face as Americans, we can look back on the economic period between 1982 to 2016 as the “Glory Days” for Investors. Reaganomics helped to jump start the boom of this 34- year economic era. American presidents typically receive too much credit for bull markets and too much blame for bear markets. Each new administration inherits his predecessor’s unsolved problems. During the Reagan era, tax cuts and easing of regulatory burdens helped provide a marketfriendly foundation for the U.S. economy. Reagan’s Federal Reserve Chairman, Volcker, took actions that were as controversial as Reagan’s economic policies, when he took unpopular steps to reduce inflation. The “Volcker recession” caused unemployment rates to reach double-digit levels, however his decisions created a steep and sustainable decline in inflation. Investors, during this time, benefited from favorable demographics, while baby boomers hit peak earnings, and their spending increased, as well as an increasing global trade. The “peace dividend” experienced during the 1990s after the fall of the Berlin Wall also provided a boost to markets. Despite two steep equity market corrections in the 1990s, the S&P 500 Index (with dividends reinvested) provided double-digit annualized returns during the multi-decade rally. Bonds also rallied strongly, providing
significant price appreciation as 10-year U.S. Treasury yields declined from double-digit to low single-digit levels. These decisions helped to create funds for defense and security spending. Under President Trump these expenses will likely rise in coming decades, making the peace dividend of the 1990s a distant memory. President Trump plans to increase spending, while cutting taxes, at a time the U.S. debt approaches 20 trillion dollars. Trade was a dominant issue in the U.S. presidential campaign, and the expansion of trade is likely to reverse in coming years. Federal budget experts suggest that the high national debt may not be sustainable without significant reductions in government spending, and an increase is tax revenues, which may not happen with a polarized U.S. Congress. The Fed has taken extraordinary actions to prevent the U.S. economy from falling into a deflationary spiral. After several years of monetary stimulus, inflation is finally approaching the Fed’s 2% target. Inflation is a vital component of economic recovery if held below 6%. At current levels, there is more of a risk associated with rising interest rates and inflation than potential benefit from a decline in either. Increase in other expenses will also impact Government spending. The ratio of retirees to those in the workplace is currently 4.5 to 1. By 2030, the ratio is projected to decline to less than 3 to 1. The aging of the baby boomers will create significant budget challenges in which the Fed faces Mandatory outlays. These, include entitlements such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. They are projected to exceed 80% of federal revenues by 2030. When interest costs

are added to mandatory spending, the cumulated spending commitments are projected to be nearly 100% of federal revenues by 2030. U.S. public debt to GDP was slightly more than 30% in 1980, giving Reagan considerable latitude to lower taxes. President Donald Trump has considerably less fiscal room to lower taxes unless he cuts spending elsewhere, as public debt is now more than 75% of GDP. Equity valuations were close to Depression-era lows in the early 1980s; valuations today are considerably higher, though below the peaks reached during the technology bubble. Terrorism is a continuing threat, and is compounded by anarchy in “ungoverned”
states in the Middle East and Africa as well as the nuclear ambitions of North Korea and Iran. The rise of China and the expansionism of Russia create heightened risk of superpower conflict, after an extended period in which the U.S. has been the dominant superpower. With these dynamics in mind, it may be time to readjust market expectations.

Report: CA 9th Worst in Nation for Drinking-Water Violations By Desert Star Staff SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Water systems in California have the nation’s ninth-worst record for violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act, according to a new report from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Researchers pored over Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data from 2015 and found more than 1,900 violations in 832 different water systems that together serve 2.5 million people – in the Golden State alone. Erik Olson, a report coauthor and director of the NRDC’s Health Program, said many of the violations are for water conditions that can make people sick, and
listed a few of the concerns: “These violations include failures to treat the water to get rid of pathogens; excessive levels of contaminants like arsenic or coliform bacteria; and failures to test the water to make sure that it is safe or to report results to ensure that it is safe,” he said. Olson warned that failures in reporting sometimes hide major health problems, as they did in Flint, Mich. The report found across the country, 77 million people get water from systems that have violations. President Donald Trump’s recent budget proposal calls for a 30-percent cut to the EPA, in the name of reducing burdensome regulations. The NDRC report says
the cuts would mean fewer staff to enforce the law, and a lot less money for grants to help smaller water systems afford needed improvements. According to Jamie Consuegra, legislative director for NRDC’s Climate Program, eight out of 10 violations already result in no penalty at all. “Despite the need for better and more enforcement of state drinking-water laws, the Trump proposal would actually reduce EPA’s enforcement by nearly a quarter,” said Consuegra. The report concludes the U.S. would need to invest about $380 billion to bring its aging water system infrastructure into compliance with safety standards.
About 6.6 percent of Californians drink water from public systems that have records of violating the Safe Drinking Water Act, according to a new report. (Earl 53/Morguefile)
Lung Cancer Survivor: Women Must Pay Attention to Their Bodies
Lung cancer kills more than 400 people every day. (Dave-Les Jacobs/GettyImages) By Desert Star Staff RACINE, Wis. – Only about 18 percent of lung cancer cases among women are diagnosed early, when the disease is most treatable and survival rates are five times higher. This is National Women’s Lung Health Week, which
aims to raise greater awareness of the disease. Lung cancer survivor Sandra Helmin-Clazmer is a nonsmoker and retired teacher from Racine. She’s also recognized as the American Lung Association’s 2017 Lung Force Hero for
her tireless efforts to educate women about lung cancer risks and symptoms. Helmin-Clazmer says many women are so focused on caring for others that they ignore the warning signs their bodies are giving them. “They don’t always pay
By Desert Star Staff ANTA FE, N.M. -- Critics of a bill approved Thursday by a House panel say it could subject families in New Mexico to a resurgence in predatory lending. The bill coming out of the House Financial Services Committee would repeal significant pieces of the DoddFrank Act. When housing and financial markets crashed in 2008, Wall Street reform and consumer protections were created to stop abusive practices by enhancing regulations on the financial services marketplace. Professor emeritus Don Simonson of the University of New Mexico Anderson School of Management
said he’s worried that the legislation - the Financial CHOICE Act - potentially could create that dangerous atmosphere all over again. “The new act would repeal consideration of what’s abusive,” Simonson said. “Deregulation has led to tears, and it concerns me that we’re embarking on more of that.” He said these days, New Mexicans are most commonly subjected to predatory lending through payday advances and car title loans. Passage of this legislation would allow states to obtain waivers against consumer protections for these services; potentially opening the flood gates for lenders to charge even beyond the 175 percent rates
they’re restricted to now. Backers of the bill have said it’s a matter of opinion whether lending of this kind is predatory in nature, and the responsibility rests on consumers to decide what kind of interest they’re willing to pay on borrowed money. Simonson said with half of all families in New Mexico unable to meet an emergency expenditure of $400, small, short-term credit products can be useful for those with lower incomes. But, he said borrowers in the riskiest markets often aren’t informed enough to be knowledgeable about what financial businesses are doing regarding prices. Dodd-Frank has helped protect them from taking
attention to that little cough they may have, or ‘Oh, I just have a little pain in my chest, it’ll go away,’” she says. “It’s just, ‘I’m busy or I lifted the baby,’ or you know, ‘I did too much laundry.’” Helmin-Clazmer was told by three doctors she just had asthma, but she persisted until a cancer specialist discovered a small lung tumor. That was 30 years ago, and she says today, it’s just as important to understand that lung cancer isn’t only from smoking. It can be caused by exposure to secondhand smoke, radon, air pollution and other factors. The American Lung Association says awareness of lung cancer is critically low among women – as 98 percent say it isn’t one of their topof-mind cancer concerns. Helmin-Clazmer says women tend to focus on breast cancer rather than lung cancer. “They don’t associate that with the female gender,” she states. “They don’t think
they’ll ever get it because, ‘Oh, I’m a nonsmoker, I’ll never get lung cancer.’ Well, I was too. Lo and behold – 33, and here I had lung cancer.” In fact, anyone can get lung cancer, which kills more than 400 people every day. Helmin-Clazmer says diagnosis and treatment have come a long way in the last 30 years – and so have public attitudes about smoking. She says even a night on the town has changed a lot. “You didn’t have a good time unless your clothes smelled like smoke, because every place had smoke,” she points out. “I feel very proud that we’ve made some gains. And I want women to be aware of the fact that they can get lung cancer, and it takes being diligent, and aware of your body.” If you are a smoker, there is help. The Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line number is 800-QUIT-NOW.
out loans under conditions they don’t fully understand. “The guiding principle behind a consumer financial protection is the measure of fitting the terms of such a loan such that you don’t jeopardize the borrower’s ability to repay,” Simonson said. He said removing protections from Dodd-Frank
in the Financial CHOICE Act would allow families to go into debt that could leave them trapped on a treadmill they never get off. The bill now moves on to the full House of Representatives, where a hearing has yet to be scheduled.

Are Your Kids’ Toys Spying On Your Family? By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A bill to make sure your kids’ toys aren’t spying on them will have its first hearing before the state Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. The so-called Teddy Bears and Toasters Act would require manufacturers of smart toys and devices to install privacy protections and notify consumers about what it records or transmits. State Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson said some of these toys have voice recognition and can record conversations and collect children’s names, location and even where they go to school. “Because many of these toys and devices often lack even basic security features, they are particularly vulnerable to hacking, cyber attacks and
those who would do ill will to our children,” Jackson said. Senate Bill 327 also would apply to other internetconnected devices such as smart refrigerators, thermostats and digital assistants, requiring that companies tell consumers where their data ends up and explain their privacy protections. The California Manufacturers and Technology Association said the bill will stifle innovation, encourage lawsuits and impose infeasible mandates. The trade group also claimed companies already are voluntarily taking steps to protect customers’ privacy. Common Sense Media CEO Jim Steyer supports the bill and said consumers still are largely in the dark

to stay out of the issue. “The absence of clear federal guidelines now means that thousands of students in states or districts that are not supportive of the goal of keeping transgender students safe and well-integrated will have to rely on other means to seek redress for what’s happening to them,” Kim said. The report said the Obama administration tried to force a one-size-fits-all policy on the entire nation rather than allowing parents, teachers and local schools to find solutions. Kim said schools need policies to keep transgender students safe, and also to foster a climate that encourages acceptance. He criticized the Heritage report for failing to address those topics. Kim said schools need to know how to refer to transgender students, how to deal with the name and gender changes in official
school records, and how to create policies that make students feel comfortable in school restrooms, locker rooms, and when participating in sports and overnight field trips. He said there have been some positive changes made in states such as California, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. “States and districts have done a lot around the country,” Kim said. “And that is good news because those districts and state policies are going to provide the guidance needed in the future for other states and districts to follow.” He said students who aren’t in districts that correctly deal with gender identity issues may resort to filing lawsuits. But, he observed, not every family can afford to take that route.

There is a call for schools to create policies on gender identity. (cdc.gov) By Desert Star Staff ANNAPOLIS, Md. -A report on transgender student policies in American schools by a conservative think tank is being taken to task by experts. The report from the
Heritage Foundation, called “Gender Identity Policies in Schools: What Congress, the Courts and Trump Administration Should Do,” came out in March. Robert Kim, a research fellow at Rutgers University, has
put together a rebuttal. He said the report claims to give guidance on how states and school districts can resolve issues surrounding transgender students. But he said in reality, it only advises the federal government
Researchers: Fake News Not Swaying Elections
By Desert Star Staff DENVER – Despite claims by some politicians, fake news, social media and search algorithms don’t sway public opinion, according to a study by a group of international researchers. William Dutton, the report’s lead author, says if search engines did help create so-called filter bubbles – where users only get links to information with which they agree – the impacts on the democratic process could be huge. But he says surveys in seven nations including the U.S. found it’s not as big a problem as recent media coverage suggests. “On social media and www.desertstarweekly.com
on the Internet generally, they find a lot of viewpoints that their friends and family, that they disagree with,” he states. “And they often go to search to check the reliability, validity of what they hear on social media.” After Donald Trump’s upset victory over Hillary Clinton, pundits and pollsters struggled to find answers and many tagged social media for hosting numerous posts that were outright lies. Dutton says while a minority of Internet users are not skilled in vetting facts, most are not so easily fooled. The research – commissioned and funded by Google – was conducted independently by Oxford
University, Michigan State University and the University of Ottawa. Dutton says fears of social media echo chambers also are overstated. He notes the survey of 14,000 people found users agree and disagree with political posts on platforms such as Facebook. And Dutton says people also are exposed to a variety of perspectives on television, radio and print outlets. He adds users rarely unfriend or block people with whom they disagree. “Most people who are very interested in politics are relying on all sorts of sources of information and not simply search, or not simply social media,” he stresses. Burning Questions Facing The Class Of 2017
By Desert Star Staff MENLO PARK, Calif.-With graduation season upon us, members of the Class of 2017 are planning their entry into professional careers. Many resources exist to help new grads craft a resume or prepare for an interview, but not all questions have simple answers. How people address these gray areas can affect their early career success. Staffing firm Robert Half outlines six questions facing the Class of 2017, with tips for how to approach them. View an infographic about the anatomy of a first-time job search. Question #1: I don’t meet all of the requirements listed in the job description – should I apply anyway? If you meet three-quarters
of the requirements, apply for the job. Some firms write job descriptions for a “perfect” candidate – one who may not exist. If you show solid skills and are eager to learn the rest, you may land an interview. Question #2: I have a great internship. How can I approach the firm about parlaying this into a full-time role? Talk with your manager sooner rather than later. Express your interest in staying and note how you’d contribute moving forward. Be flexible as to what the entry-level position may look like. If your manager doesn’t have the budget to hire you, ask for referrals to other departments that might. Question #3: The career I’m interested in has nothing to do with my major. How
do I start my search? Branch out to gather the information and resources you need. Tap your professors for ideas and use the resources at your career center. Ask your classmates if their older siblings or parents can advise you. Reach out to people who graduated last year for their input and referrals. Research local firms online to see if they hire new grads. Build your LinkedIn profile and join professional groups in your field of interest. Question #4: I can’t get a job without experience, yet I can’t get experience without a job. What should I do? Highlight the experience you do have, especially roles that show your soft skills and customer service abilities, as employers place a high
value on them. Restaurant and retail jobs, volunteer work, internships and student activities provide great experience, and show you can balance schoolwork with other priorities. Question #5: The wellknown firm I want to work for just turned me down. Should I keep trying to get in there? Thank the hiring manager for considering you and ask if he or she will keep the door open in the future. But expand your horizons; don’t limit yourself to working for the biggest brands. Many organizations can offer a solid career path to you. The first job is just that – it doesn’t set the course for your entire professional career. Question #6: The salary for my first job offer

Copies Cost THAT Much?
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: Recently my family sold a house and paid over $700.00 in fees to the association, a large portion of which was for copies of rules and regulations to be provided to the buyer. The association provided the files to a third party website and then instructed the escrow company to download the files and print copies for the buyer once I paid - The association basically did nothing. Can an association charge fees without explaining what the fees are for? Doesn’t the homeowner have the right to request copies of bylaws and regulations without being charged? When are the fees considered to be excessive? Do I have any legal recourse? Thank you for your time. G.B., Nipomo
Dear G. B.: Management companies are often compared not by their qualifications, service level, or reputation, but typically by their “per door” monthly fee. Consequently, many management firms have found that the monthly fee does not cover their payroll, let alone provide for a profit, and
companies are forced to find other ways to create revenue. One such way is to charge a variety of miscellaneous fees, including document fees. The Realtor® profession has battled these fees for years, resulting in a group of three statutes controlling document fees - Civil Code Sections 4525, 4528, and 4530. Civil Code 4525 requires an owner to as soon as possible provide a prospective buyer with an extensive list of documents. Buyers should check the list and make sure that the buyer receives all of the items listed. There can be much valuable information in those documents. Civil Code 4528 provides a form which is required by Civil 4530(d) to be provided along with the copies. This form provides a breakdown of what fee was charged for each document, preventing “bundling” of all the charges into one fee. The main homeowner protections are found in Civil Code 4530. Under this statute, an association has ten days from written demand to provide the various documents covered by Civil 4525. The association can only charge its actual cost for the copies, which normally is whatever the management charges the HOA. Associations may charge a
“reasonable” fee from the seller. The statute does not define what is “reasonable,” since this depends upon circumstances. The association can provide the copies electronically, but cannot charge extra for providing them in electronic instead of paper form. Owners can by written request receive a written advance estimate of the fees for the requested documents (Civil 4530(b)(2)). Associations charging unreasonable fees for copies can under Civil 4540 be sued for refund, a civil penalty of $500, and attorney fees. However, this remedy is underused, since the amount of money is typically not perceived to be worth the effort to pursue. An association can save members money by posting as many as possible of the Civil 4525 documents on the “members only” area of the association web site, making
it easier (and cheaper) for members to provide most of the documents to their prospective buyers. Per Civil 4530(c)(6), sellers must provide copies of the documents the seller already has at no cost to the prospective buyer. Association boards should monitor the miscellaneous fees charged by their management companies to confirm they are reasonable. Thanks for your question, Kelly Kelly G. HOROSCOPES ARIES
In these special and sacred days, tend to all promises, follow all rules, act like a Taurus (which may feel a bit restrictive) and make sure that no aversion or opposition colors your attitude and ways of being with others. Honor is most important and one progresses more easily when the virtues of patience, understanding and grace are cultivated. Like a garden of graces.
TAURUS Your energy is up and down, high and low, there and not there. Your responsibilities however remain and each day more and more appear. You would rather turn away, find friends to chat with, take short trips to the bank and back, garden, and either envision or research all that’s needed for the future. When responsibilities and the need for freedom collide, it’s best to simply focus on goals. Or garden. Then you can continue to dream.
GEMINI Heavens! There are two distinctly polarized situations occurring. One keeps you behind the scenes and the other out in the world where all your values can be seen. So you talk about them because they define you. However, you’re also pulled into quietude and silence, a sort of repose before the storm of

new Gemini energy coming. Perhaps it’s a lot of praise. Or a move. Or a revelation.
CANCER You consider your resources and wonder if they need redirecting and you wonder if you’re using them efficiently for both long and short term needs and then family needs crop up and you worry and fret and don’t sleep nights and the past reappears and you’re hurting sometimes and sometimes need help. It’s hard to ask for help. And hard to trust it will come. But ask. It will.
LEO Each day more clarity about work and purpose and resources occurs and each day you feel more courage to pursue unusual goals, to fight for what’s right, to realize that a values shift is taking place in your life and this shift may create a future you only hoped for. Your hopes are calling up all the hidden dreams and wishes you’ve ever had. They ask you to follow and open your heart of twelve petals.
VIRGO The past years have been perplexing, puzzling, demanding and challenging. There’s been a shifting of structures, a sense of being captured by a taskmaster giving you many responsibilities to tend to. After all
responsibilities are completed and lessons learned you will feel freedom and relief from the taxing demands and tests You should quietly celebrate. And tend now to that new state of awareness growing within.
LIBRA A more strict and sober view of life is quietly taking hold of your thoughts and feelings. This is good. However, it could feel restrictive. Simply consider it as another step in growing up, being responsible, learning how to tend to the demands of life and how to act with more grace and refinement. There’s a struggle for balance, a struggle to be heard and understood. There is no compromise. Be strong and call forth daring, valor and courage.
SCORPIO You had obligations and responsibilities. Then your dreams came and nestled amidst your obligations. And you had to choose. And then relationship issues (questions?) cropped up and you had more than you could handle. Something is changing you. It’s pushing you to break the mold and all previous patterned ways of being. Follow this urging. It’s a call from your future compelling you onward. Don’t resist.
SAGITTARIUS Tremendous work was called
for this month and it will continue. If you take each day and work slowly through it (like a Taurus), then you will come to the end of each day with feelings of great success and pride of accomplishment. First the Dweller then the Angel of the Presence contacts you. Tend to resources (you as resource) and money very carefully. Be prepared, after a small respite, for new creative endeavors to appear. Rest now.
CAPRICORN Your creative force can be found in the garden, woods, fields and meadows. It can be found with hands in the earth, growing plants with deep roots, and building a pantry filed with sweet and savory edibles. These comforts will safeguard you in the times to come. Are you called to be out and about and present something to the world? You work hard for all that you have. There’s so much good around you to be passionate about.
pace than you. You want both beauty and security with all interactions and relationships.
PISCES You are being urged into a new state of independence. Know that you are fully capable and have the essential qualities and gifts to rely upon yourself, to move forward into your future and make correct decisions based upon your needs and no longer the needs of others (which Pisces looks to first). Courage is presenting itself. Wear it like a shawl, a mantle and a crown. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.
AQUARIUS The focus is on communication, how and with whom. It’s also on short distance travels, here and there. And siblings. And how you learn. Are many people in your life seeking your attention? Do you feel a bit jittery and unsure, then both delighted and confused (wondering about the future)? Don’t be unkind to those who disagree or think at a different
Environmental Protection: Two Steps Forward in TN
By Desert Star Staff ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. -- Tennessee’s U.S. senators are moving ahead with a bill providing protections for the state’s wilderness lands, even while the Trump administration works to remove protections elsewhere.
Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker introduced the Tennessee Wilderness Act - S.973 - to protect 20,000 acres of the Cherokee National Forest. Laura Hodge, campaign coordinator for Tennessee Wild, said the Republican-
led legislation faces good odds in the Senate. “This bill is huge because, with a Republican bill - conservation bill - being introduced in a Republican climate, we’ve got a great opportunity to get this bill passed,” Hodge said. “And it’s

significant because it protects some of the most pristine places in the Southeast.” Designating a place a wilderness area is the highest level of conservation protection for federal land. This bill comes as President Trump announced an executive order last week prompting a review of several national monuments - most of which are located in the West. According to the latest numbers from the Outdoor Industry Association, outdoor recreation generates almost $4 billion in federal tax revenue per year, and about the same amount for states in the Southeast - a region that includes Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Mark McNight of Chattanooga has been active in public land conservation for the past decade. He said while designating additional lands as wilderness would be a win for the Volunteer State, threatening protections of national monuments in other parts of the country is indicative of a larger problem. “If you start not following
these rules and start trying to undo the process, it puts the whole public lands system at risk,” McNight said; “because, if you think about it, protecting land forever is a concept that requires us all to believe in the same thing.” Bill Hodge, executive director of the Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards, said it’s important to pay attention to national policy changes, even if they don’t directly impact the state. “While a place like the Smokies is not at risk because it is a national park and it’s not a national monument that’s been designated, this all starts to undermine this entire idea of the value of public lands,” Hodge said. A number of national monuments across the country are threatened by Trump’s executive order. This is the fifth time the Tennessee Wilderness Act has been introduced, but supporters are hopeful that, since it has the support of members of the majority party, this time it will pass. www.desertstarweekly.com

‘The Bodyguard’-- Music, Romance & Danger at the Pantages

The new musical “The Bodyguard,” based on the Warner Bros. film of the same name, will be at the Hollywood Pantages for an all too brief three week run, ending May 21. In the film Whitney Houston was the singing star being stalked and in need of protection, provided by Kevin Costner, her bodyguard. In the theatrical musical version Grammy Awardnominated and multi platinum R&B/pop recording artist Deborah Cox takes over the
role of Rachel Marron who is deeply concerned for her safety after a mysterious intruder is able to sneak into her dressing room and steal one of her shimmering gowns. Even though she has security it is decided that someone with even more experience needs to be called in. At this point former secret service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer ( Judson Mills) is hired to keep the endangered superstar out of harm’s way. It’s definitely not love at first
sight, but things heat up considerably as time goes by. Farmer is very professional, but Rachel wants to feel she is in total control. Her young son Fletcher (Kevelin B. Jones III) however takes to him right away. Her sister Nicki (Jasmin Richardson) also finds the bodyguard attractive and personable. Danger is a key element in the storyline, but there is also plenty of humor, warmth and romance throughout. For example, Rachel’s young son Fletcher is a delight who can belt out a song and dance with assurance. (Young Kevelin alternates in the role with Douglas Baldeo.) One of the most charming scenes in the show occurs when Rachel and her bodyguard go out on a ‘sort of a date’ to a karaoke hangout. Cleverly she tricks him to get up and sing. The bodyguard does sing, sort of, and his solo is endearing and quite funny.
KMIR News Staff Indio, CA - He’s a heavy hitter in the ring, but Randy Caballero is bringing the heat when the gloves come off. Local boxer Randy Caballero has quite the resume. From being the former IBF Bantamweight Champion of the World to now the NABF Super Bantamweight title holder. But his resume extends outside of the ring as he is in his third year of being a local business owner. Caballero is known in the Coachella Valley for being a world champion. But like anyone who does anything in life, sometimes it’s nice to unplug. Caballero opened a barbershop man cave in Indio to not only have an outlet for himself but for locals looking for the same thing,
“My vision was to make a place where the guys can just get away. In this shopping center you’ve got a nails salon, women’s clothing store, you have all this stuff for women. When a guy goes with their wife and is sitting in their car waiting, they can come in here, hang out get their haircut play pool, you know watch TV. It’s just a place to hang out like a man cave. And that was my envision here in this barbershop. And you know it’s something totally different than the rest of them.” Although Caballero doesn’t cut hair, clients always enjoy his presence. “People come in here like where’s Randy, where’s Randy? You know I try to come out here, hang out with clients, and my
barbers and just let people see my place around here. It’s a different place for me to get away as well. I get to come out and hang out with the guys. You know I get to be myself around these guys. They’re fun to be around. We’re always joking around and we always joke with clients and make them feel like they’re at home.” There is however, one major difference between boxing and owning a barbershop, “I don’t get hit. You know what being inside the ring, it’s a tough sport you know and it’s a tough sport going through training camp and going through what I have to go through. But it all pays off when I’m inside the ring and for here it’s kind of similar. There’s hard days, there’s

The real musical numbers belong to the ladies. And the show is filled with one hit after another. Rachel and her sister Nicki are singer-songwriters, but Nicki hides her singing talents away, performing usually unnoticed in a small club. Frank Farmer comes one night and is impressed. You’ll be impressed as well by her vocal styling. Of course the iconic song ”I Will Always Love You” is sung by Deborah Cox as Rachel. Other hits include: “Greatest Love of All,” “I’m Every Woman,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” “One Moment in Time,” “Run to You,” “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” and “Savin’ All My Love.” The stalker, constantly lurking in the shadows throughout, is menacingly portrayed by Jorge Paniagua. The book for the show is by Alexander Dinelaris based on the screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan. The imaginative set and costume
designs are by Tim Hatley with choreography by Karen Bruce. Thea Sharrock directed. “The Bodyguard,” at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre, 6233 Hollywood Blvd. (just east of Vine St.) ends May 21. Tickets are available at www. HollywoodPantages.com or www.Ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-982-2787. Tickets can also be purchased at the theatre’s box office. Note: Deborah Cox is not scheduled to perform at the matinees. New 2017-2018 Season Packages for the Pantages are available now. The list of shows includes: Disney’s “Aladdin,” “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Love Never Dies--The Phantom Returns,” “School of Rock-the Musical,” “The Color Purple,” “On Your Feet-The Emilio & Gloria Estefan Musical” and “Waitress.” To order or find out more go to HollywoodPantages. com or call 866-755-2929.
easy days and there’s different days and it’s just the way it is in the gym. I get my good days and bad days, it’s the same thing. I try to make sure everything runs good with my career and this business. Hopefully in the future I open more businesses and venture out to different things but
as of right now I’m enjoying my barbershop and loving the way it’s going so far.” Caballero is still waiting for his next date to get back in the ring. Until then, he’ll be continuing his training and running his barbershop. Source: KMIR

E N T E RTA I N M E N T Tim Robbins On His Road To Stardom BY BEVERYL COHN
Tim Robbins PART 2: THE JOURNEY Bio Recap: One of America’s acting treasures, the multiple award-winning Tim Robbins, excels in any medium in which he works. He began his career on episodic television, appearing in such programs as “Hill Street Blues,” “St. Elsewhere,” “Hardcastle and McCormick,” “Santa Barbara,” “Moonlighting,” and “The Love Boat.” Robbins’ film work, however, is what catapulted him into becoming a major movie star beginning with his role as Ebby Calvin ‘Nuke’ LaLoosh in “Bull Durham” in which he plays a rookie baseball player being “trained” by Susan Sarandon. One of his most memorable roles was in “Mystic River” for which he won multiple awards. Equally at home behind the camera, he directed the riveting “Dead Man Walking,” for which he received a nomination for Best Director. Another unforgettable performance was in “Shawshank Redemption.” Other films include “War of the Worlds,” “Green Lantern,” “Catch a Fire,” “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Top Gun,” and “The Player” for which he received the Best Actor Academy Award. He is Founder and Artistic Director of The Actors’ Gang, which he formed thirty-five years ago and has directed multiple provocative productions, most of which with a political bent to their stories. Robbins recently sat down with your reporter for an exclusive two-part interview, which has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes. Here’s a small world story for you. When I was in Washington Irving H.S. in
10

New York City, our brother school was Stuyvesant High where you attended. Is that where your love of theatre began? Robbins: No, it had happened before that. My sisters were involved with theatre so I would go watch their plays. I was put into one of their plays I believe when I was 12, so that was my first play. I did a street theatre show called “Undercover Cop,” followed by a number of plays that were social satires. We would pack a truck with 4 x 8 platforms on legs. We’d set up a stage – put the backdrop up, and costumes would be in the truck, where we would change. Musicians would be there. They would play music, the crowd would gather, which usually was around 200-300 people, and we would perform our plays on the street. It was a great way to learn because it takes a lot of projection and presence to compete with a New York City street, with the sirens, the honking horns, and the junkies coming up on the stage. (Laughs) You mentioned that Bull Durham is your favorite film? Why? Robbins: It’s where I met Susan (Sarandon) and a family came out of that for me. That was pretty special. Not only did that happen, but I was also able for the first time in my life to fulfill a fantasy, which was to be a professional baseball player. (Laughs) How does your success as an actor inform your love of theatre? Robbins: I wanted to be a theatre director and that’s why I went to college. I had always envisioned myself
going back to New York and becoming a director. Then I got lucky. I got an agent out of a competition I did at UCLA and within a year I was working as a professional actor and making pretty good money. I produced my first play “Ube the King” using my earnings from a gig. By the time I got around to my second play, I had started earning money in television and movies so I realized wow; this is a great way to fund theatre. So, for the first ten years of The Actors’ Gang, I was very much in the discipline of making sure that I would save time to do one play a year. I would tell my agents that I was going to do a play and would be out of commission for three months so please don’t send me on auditions. They would say, ‘Are you crazy? You’re not getting paid to do theatre. We’re building a career for you and things are going well’. I would tell them this is as important – maybe more important than doing a walk-on in “Hardcastle & McCormick.” In my mind, one was to make money and one was to make art. I was very clear. Even when I was getting better and better roles, I made sure to still make time for theatre. When I was cast in “Bull Durham,” I was also producing “Carnage, A Comedy,” which we opened at the Tiffany Theatre in Hollywood. So I told my agents that I agreed to do the film but would need three months off after that.
Do you find theatre and film mutually exclusive? Robbins: My different careers have always been partners and I still get a lot of joy out of acting in movies and I love directing movies. But, my heart is always here and always has been. (The Actors’ Gang.) When you’re waiting on financing for a film, and you realize you are subject to the whims of financiers, I can just come in here and say, ‘Hey, let’s workshop this. I’m kind of interested in doing this play. Let’s do some scenes and see how it looks.’ What is your biggest fear when you’re starting a new project with your actors? Robbins: (Long Pause) I don’t operate in fear. I think it’s good when you’re trying to create something that you have doubts, and challenge yourself to be better. Too much confidence can be an enemy and certainly arrogance is not a fun thing to deal with. I try to enter into a relationship with my actors as a collaborator rather than a boss because their work, their talent, and their commitment to emotions May 10, 2017
ultimately will reveal a truth, if there is a truth to be revealed. Also, their best efforts will reveal the lack of truth and where there’s something wrong. It’s a great opportunity for a writer/director to have a group of actors to be able to make you realize what works or conversely, what doesn’t work, giving you the opportunity to change it. Can you talk about your family? Were they show biz folks? Robbins: My dad was a folksinger and my mom was a publishing executive, but she also sang. She was a music major in college and was in the marching band, which is how they met at UCLA. She played the flute and my dad was the drum major. He had some success with a group called The Highwaymen. Then he started doing a solo act and ran a club called “The Gaslight,” in Greenwich Village. She was a member of the New York Chorale Society of which she was president. She sang regularly with them and would do shows at Carnegie Hall. It was a very creative household and there was always music playing. They didn’t encourage us to be actors; in fact, they encouraged us not to be actors because my dad knew how difficult it was. I wanted to attend Performing Arts High School but he wouldn’t let me apply. He said that there’s nothing less interesting than an uneducated actor. So that’s why I went to Stuyvesant High School even though it was over my head because I was a Catholic school kid. I took the test to get in and got in, but in my freshman year, I was a “C” minus student. I was a bit over my head, as Catholic school had no science. It was “God made it” and that’s it! We didn’t have any kind of pre-algebra or any kind introduction to concepts. Are you a practicing Catholic? Robbins: No, I’m not. But, I’m respectful of that religion. What about your family? Robbins: (Laughs) They’re all in the business. My son is a musician and a great songwriter and my grandson is directing and my daughter writes an amazing blog on motherhood. You’ve worked with some of the most famous people in film. Do you have one experience that stands out for you? Robbins: I would say working with Robert Altman
on “The Player” was a dream come true. I won Best Actor at Cannes as well as a Golden Globe. It was right before I directed my first film so it was like having an opportunity to attend film school with Altman. We collaborated. We wrote together. He respected me, which was an odd thing because I was a young man and had idolized him. I just loved him because he empowered me with the idea that me and Bob Altman were collaborating on this project. At one point he said that a producer might try to come in and try to bully his way or try to cut a scene. We said that we should make a pact that if they start trying to fu## with us, I walk and if I walk, you walk. I said, ‘I’m in!’ He was a genius in so many ways. His films are not like any other films. When I saw “Nashville,” I was in high school and it was the first time I watched a movie and thought wow. You can do that in film? It seems that Hollywood marriages break up at a faster rate than others. Can you talk about that? Robbins: I can’t talk about a Hollywood marriage. Susan and I never had a Hollywood marriage. We lived in New York, number one and number two – one of the reasons we stayed together as long as we did was because we kind of didn’t talk about this stuff. You know, broad general ideas about what relationships are or how that is through the prism of our relationship. (long pause) It’s an area that I’ve always refused to talk about because personally I don’t think it’s that interesting and I also just don’t think I know anything insightful about this subject. Poundridge, New York came up in my research. Did you live there with your parents? Robbins: No. I grew up in Greenwich Village with my parents in a one-bedroom railroad flat with four kids. I bought a house in Poundridge somewhere around 1990. I still own a house that with Susan. Isn’t that Republican territory? Robbins: It’s partly Republican. They wouldn’t let me join the golf club. I just wanted a place to play golf as I had a brief interest in golf. I couldn’t become a member because I was not married. I was living in sin. (Laughs) But you could be married and divorced several times and still be eligible for membership. (Laughs) Well, I’ve kept you for a long time and it’s been fun. I look forward to your next project – theatrical or film or whatever medium in which you are working. Robbins: Thank you. www.desertstarweekly.com

By Jackie Devereaux (Joshua Tree, CA) – If you’re looking for or need a spiritual fix but don’t care for the traditional Judeo/ Christian religions, then you may find the vibrations at Shakti Fest to your liking in the high desert this weekend. More than six thousand people are expected to gather over the three-day festival to sing and dance with kirtan and Hindu music, attend master yoga sessions, discover alternative healing modalities, and sample delicious vegetarian foods from May 12-14 at the Institute of Mentalphysics. Yoga is everywhere in the United States. Most big box stores sell yoga mats, straps and blocks, and most gyms offer yoga class regularly. For
those who want to get their fix of yoga on, and off the mat, yoga retreats tend to be expensive in places like Costa Rica. However, Shakti Fest is a great alternative to that expensive option. “We are invincible, inexhaustible, inspirational... here is so much diversity in the human race, we can all recognize the absolute power of the people to do good,” says festival promoter Sridhar Silberfein on his website. “Coming together in a community of compassionate connection, we can send out the energies of healing and compassion across the globe. Never underestimate the power of love!” “From May 12-14, we combine these powerful energies in celebration of
the Divine Feminine. We stand together in honor of Mother Earth, nature, and family. Join the sangha
(spiritual community) at Shakti Fest this year and be part of a greater whole.” This year’s event features two pre-event intensive workshops with Saul David Raye on May 11 hosting the Divine Moon: Awakening & the Inner Path of Shakti; and Siva hosting an Ayurveda Medicine workshop. A postevent workshop called Festival Immersion with Govind Das and Radha where participants will learn from the gurus, saints, great masters and scriptures from the East takes place on May 16. Mayand new Ram Dass interview with Silberfein, promoter of both the spring Shakti Fest and fall Bhakti Fest held Sept. 6-11 with Deepak Chopra and Krishna Das as headliners.
This year’s musical lineup includes: Jai Uttal, Saul David Raye, Shiva Rea, Jaya Lakshmi and Ananda, Mas Vidal, Donna De Lory, Jeffery Armstrong, Sheela Bringi, Govind Das and Radha, Fanna-Fi-Allah, Mark Whitwell, Viyakasi Das, Singun Kaur, Prajna Viera, Uzo Nwanka, and many more. Tickets are $375 for the five-day festival and available online or at the festival site. Go to www.bhaktifest.com for tickets and festival schedule. There are still some campsites still available in the men’s area with full showers and toilets, and individual beds with complete bedding available from $150 from Thursday to Monday. Free camping is available for Wednesday and Thursday when registered for the full weekend festival.

All-Suite Viking Ra Will Begin Sailing New Nile River Cruisetour in Spring 2018 By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, -Viking River Cruises (www. vikingrivercruises.com) today announced details of the newest addition to its river fleet, Viking Ra™. Recently acquired, the vessel has been stripped down to the steel to undergo a complete renovation that will reflect Viking’s awardwinning Scandinavian design. Tailored to an intimate sailing experience for just 48 guests, Viking Ra will sail the Nile River on a new Egypt cruisetour, Pharaohs & Pyramids, that will launch in March 2018. “Egypt is one of the most intriguing countries in the world, and it remains a top destination for many of our guests,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises. “For two decades, we have led the industry in river cruising with our innovative ship design and itineraries that bring our guests closer to the cultures of the world. We are committed to Egypt, and with the introduction of Viking Ra, we look forward to providing our award-winning service to our guests on the Nile – and to their experiencing this culturally
rich region in the Viking way.” During the 12-day, Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary, guests will experience Egypt’s cultural treasures in seven destinations. The cruisetour begins with a three-night stay at a first-class hotel in Cairo, where guests can visit iconic sites such as the Great Pyramids of Giza, the new Grand Egyptian Museum and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. Guests will then fly to Luxor, where they will visit the Temples of Luxor and Karnak before boarding Viking Ra for a 8-day roundtrip cruise on the Nile River to Aswan, featuring Privileged Access to the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens and excursions to the Temple of Khnum in Esna, the Dendera Temple complex in Qena, and a visit to a colorful Nubian village where guests can experience a traditional elementary school. Finally, the journey concludes with a flight back to Cairo for a final night in the historic city. Viking Ra Designed for Destination Cruising The newly rebuilt, allsuite Viking Ra will boast 24 staterooms that will
exclusively accommodate 48 Viking guests for an intimate cruising experience. Named in honor the Egyptian sun god Ra, Viking Ra’s name also pays homage to the great Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl and his papyrus-reed boats Ra and Ra II. Designed by experienced nautical architects and engineers,
including the same interior design team responsible for the award-winning fleet of Viking Longships®, Viking Ra will be a state-of-the art ship with the clean, elegant Scandinavian design for which Viking is known blended with local influences like traditional geometric Arabic patterns and terrazzo floors. Viking Ra will help guests immerse themselves in local surroundings and will feature: All Suite Staterooms: The ship features three suite stateroom categories, each of 291 sq. ft., including 20 Veranda Suites with a full-size veranda in the living room and a French balcony in the bedroom. All staterooms include premium amenities such as a hotelstyle bed, luxury linens, sofa, private bathroom with shower, air conditioning and flat-screen TVs. Pool and Two Jacuzzis: In addition to two Jacuzzis, the ship features a pool at the back of the ship, allowing guests to swim surrounded by their destination. A sanctuary from the sun is provided by sculptural “sail-shades” inspired by local dhow ships
and intricate mashrabiyainfluenced screens surrounding the Pool and Sun Deck. Spa: Specifically designed for Viking Ra, guests can relax in The Spa offering massage services and a variety of treatments. Onboard Dining, Bar and Lounge: Dine in The Restaurant, which serves three full meals and a selection of regional and international fare, then head to the clinker-built bar to share a cocktail with friends. During the day, guests can enjoy The Lounge to relax, take in the views through floor-to-ceiling glass doors or hear an informative discussion on the next destination. Enriching Entertainment: Connecting guests to their destinations through authentic experiences is central to Viking’s “thinking person’s cruise.” Instead of casinos and water slides, guests are offered Viking’s Culture Curriculum®, which includes a Nubian evening event on board and a local experience riding a camel. Additionally, Viking’s expert Egyptologist leads all excursions, sharing the archaeological and historical significance of the sites.

Study: MD’s Texts Can Help Patients Lose Weight
By Desert Star Staff CHICAGO – More than one in three adults in the U.S. are considered to be obese, and a new study suggests those who are struggling to lose weight might benefit if their doctors stayed in touch with them about the importance of eating a healthy diet. In the study, one group of patients was given instructions on a healthy diet at the time of their doctor’s visit. A second group got the same advice - but also received three text messages a week for 22 weeks, and after six months, they lost an average of 11.2 pounds, while the first group only dropped about two pounds. Dr. Ashwani Singal, associate director of Hepatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham,
says for overweight people, shedding weight can be a matter of life or death. “We know from experience that it can be relatively easy to lose weight at first but we want to know whether text messaging can help people over the long haul,” he says. Singal says obesity can lead to a variety of fatal illnesses including diabetes, heart disease and non-alcoholic liver disease, which can turn into cirrhosis or cancer. The study is being discussed at the Digestive Disease Week conference in Chicago, which wraps up Tuesday. The National Institutes of Health says obesity is associated with other chronic gastrointestinal illnesses and Singal says this study indeed indicates doctors may be
able to help their patients by simply texting them. “Based on the success in this study, we will be conducting additional larger

Poor can expect to die 20 years before rich in rural US
By Desert Star Staff The difference in life expectancy between rich and poor in the US has grown far larger over the last three decades, a new study has found, creating a gap of nearly 20 years in clusters of poor, rural counties, even as life expectancy has risen overall. In 2014, the life expectancy in the US at birth for both sexes combined was 79.1 ‒ up 5.3 years from 1980 ‒ but differed by 20.1 years between the counties with the lowest and highest life expectancy, researchers at the University of Washington found in a study published Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. “Life expectancy in many places in this country is declining. It’s going backward instead of forward,” Dr. Ali Mokdad, a co-author of the report and a professor of global health at the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, told the Washington Post. “These disparities are widening, so this gap is increasing.” “This is way worse than any of us had assumed,” he told the Guardian The researchers used “deidentified” death records www.desertstarweekly.com

Coachella Considers Own Police Force
KMIR Vince Marino Coachella, CA -The cost to use Riverside County Patrol Deputies and other personnel could be going up. Now some of the cities that contract with the sheriff’s department may decide to go it alone.

DesertSTAR
“This is an issue for us that’s extremely important because it’s unsustainable. Not only for the city of Coachella...every contract city is questioning the Sheriff rate increases,” said Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez.
Tomorrow, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors will consider the request from the sheriff’s department, which says they need more money to pay for the high costs of protecting people. “That’s part of everything else. Labor goes up, costs go up, gas goes up, everything goes up,” said Juan Torres, a 70 year resident of the city of Coachella. Under the new rates, the cost of a sheriff’s patrol deputy would rise from $160 to just over $168 per hour, an increase of about 5%. The sheriff’s department said the largest single component of the May 10, 2017
rate increase is labor costs. The city of Coachella will be one of the cities hit hardest by this increase, and they may just end up hitting back. “We’re looking at neighboring cities and possibly the contracting with the city of Indio. We’ll look at creating our own joint powers authority which is a metropolitan police department, looking at other partners such as cities within the Coachella Valley or different cities within Riverside County. And then the third option we’ll look at is possibly creating our own police department here in the city of Coachella,” said Hernandez.
Artist: Ozomatli Title: Non-Stop Mexico – Jamaica (Cleopatra Records) You might like if you enjoy: Sly & Robbie, Herb Alpert, Juanes Tell me more: Although groundbreaking Los Angeles group Ozomatli is well known for being a champion for Latino culture and fighting for immigrant workers’ rights, the group’s “Non-Stop Mexico – Jamaica” is their first mostlySpanish language release in their ambitious 21-year history. The album was produced by drum and bass reggae icons Sly & Robbie (Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff), and the sixmember Ozomatli is joined by the far-flung likes of Gaby Moreno, Juanes, G. Love, Slightly Stoopid and Herb Alpert to perform reggae-flavored favorites of their youth. As Ozomatli proves across the rewarding 14-track disc, reggae stylings sound as great in their sonic hands as the Latin rock, hip hop, funk and other genres explored on previous albums. Among this writer’s favorites is a smooth version of “Besame Mucho” blending melodic lead vocals from Asdru Sierra and rapping from Justin Poree with Alpert’s trumpet. Later, Ozomatli transforms the classic “La Bamba” into a Santanameets-Third World celebration. Information: ozomatli.com.
•••••••••••••• The 5% hike will allow the department to cover salaries, benefits, equipment, and other services needed to support the officers on the streets. The city of Coachella was denied when it asked the Sheriff’s department for cost projections over the next five year. “One of the things that’s very difficult to do is look at trends when you don’t have a partner that’s willing to share their budget information or their cost increase information,” Hernandez said. For now, the city of Coachella will dip into its reserves to pay for the increased cost of doing business with the sheriff’s department. The earliest they will make a change will in the year 2020. NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF: RICK FREELS aka RICKY FREELS CASE NO. INP1700260 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both of RICK FREELS aka RICKY FREELS. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by JACOB FREELS in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that JENNIFER HAAS be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: June 7, 2017 at 8:45AM in Dept. 1A located at 46-200 Oasis Street, Indio, CA 92201. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for Petitioner: BRYAN E. SKLAR, ESQ., 901 E. TAHQUITZ CANYON WAY, SUITE A-201, PALM SPRINGS, CA 92262 (760) 778-4967. EPA to replace half of science advisors
By Desert Star Staff Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt has dismissed half of the EPA’s key scientific review board members. Some fear the Trump administration is “inserting politics into science” and will favor industries the agency is meant to regulate. Pruitt is facing a backlash over his decision to not reappoint nine members of the 18-member Board of Scientific Counselors (BOSC) – a panel which reviews research done by EPA scientists within the Office of Research and Development (ORD). According to JP Freire, a spokesman for the EPA, Pruitt is considering replacing the academic scientists with representatives from the very industries the EPA regulates. “The administrator believes we should have people on this board who understand the impact of regulations on the regulated community,” Freire told the New York Times. “We want to expand the pool of applicants to as broad a range as possible, to include universities that aren’t typically represented and issues that aren’t typically represented.” Four other members who have already served their maximum two terms have also left, opening the way for Pruitt to fill 13 of the board’s 18 total seats. The scientists who ended their first term at the agency were recently assured they would be able to stay for another term. Robert Richardson, one of the members of

BOSC whose renewal was denied, told Science Magazine that the cuts “just came out of nowhere.” “I’ve never heard of any circumstance where someone didn’t serve two consecutive terms,” Richardson told the Washington Post, adding that the dismissals gave him “great concern that objective science is being marginalized in this administration.”Gretchen Goldman, research director at the Center for Science and Democracy, said the EPA’s decision is “inserting politics into science.” “The EPA is treating this scientific advisory board like its members are political appointees when these committees are not political positions. The individuals on these boards are appointed based on scientific expertise not politics,” Goldman said, according to CNN. Members of the BOSC are selected based on scientific merit, according to a 2013 solicitation for committee members. Nominees are evaluated based on “scientific
and/or technical expertise, knowledge, and experience” as well as an absence of financial conflicts of interest. The dismissals follow HR 1431, a bill passed by the House in March, which alters membership requirements for the EPA’s other major advisory board, the Science Advisory Board (SAB). The bill’s sponsor, Congressman Frank Lucas (R-Oklahoma), Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, wrote an op-ed for the Daily Caller about the bill, which he said was meant to “implement safeguards and shed light on the scientific review process behind many federal regulations.”“In rural America, EPA had become a four letter word,” Lucas wrote. “Many of my constituents were constantly worried about potential fines or the overwhelming cost of complying with prospective regulations.” House Science Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) said the agency
needs to be restructured in order to remove “clear” conflicts of interests from scientists who “receive millions of dollars in grants from the federal government,” he said in an interview with the Washington Post. However, many scientists who served on the advisory boards say the restructuring will create further conflicts of interest within the agency. Joseph Arvai, who served on the EPA’s Chartered Science Advisory Board wrote an op-ed for the Huffington Post, in which he said the bill was only written to “give business and industry greater influence over EPA rulemaking.” President Donald Trump has proposed making major cuts to the EPA ever since he took office. The EPA has scrubbed several pages from their website and some environmental regulations put in place under former President Barack Obama have been overturned by the Republicancontrolled Congress.
Domestic violence hotline sees sharp rise
By Desert Star Staff The most popular domestic violence hotline in the US has reported a 30 percent increase from 2015 in calls from undocumented immigrants. Their data shows that the growing fear of deportation began during the 2016 presidential election. A recent report from the National Domestic Violence Hotline states that it responded to 7,053 phone calls, texts and online contacts in 2016 that involve immigration-related concerns, up 30 percent from 2015, the Associated Press reported on Monday. Katie Ray-Jones, CEO of the hotline, said the spike in calls from undocumented immigrants happened just after President Donald Trump became the Republican nominee for president and the party began calling for tougher enforcement of immigration laws. Ray-Jones told the Associated Press that many victims had been threatened by their abusers, who have used immigration status as leverage to control their victim’s

behavior. Many of the women who call say they have been threatened by their abusers and if they ever tried calling the police, the abuser would contact US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deport them. “We’re not in a place where we can say, ‘Oh, don’t worry. That’s not going to happen,’” Ray-Jones said. Kim Gandy, president of the National Network to End Domestic Violence said the victims are afraid that deportation would cause them to be separated from their children. “It’s about the worst threat you can make to someone,” Gandy told AP. The data from the Hotline mirrors recent data from police departments, which have seen a dramatic reduction in the number of domestic abuse reports from undocumented immigrants since Trump became president. In March, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck held a press conference, where he said that there has been a
10 percent decline in reports of spousal abuse and a 25 percent decline of reported rapes among Latino residents, compared to the previous year since Trump became president. Beck said the fear of deportation creates a rift between the community and law enforcement, whereby undocumented immigrants are reluctant to engage with police, even if they were to witness a crime. “It’s no surprise that’s someone who’s being abused, but fears deportation if she calls the police, would reach out to the national hotline to try to find out if she has any other options,” Gandy said. In February, the immigrant community was shocked when ICE agents arrested a woman in a courthouse after she obtained a protective order against the man who allegedly abused her. US Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly responded in a joint letter in March, explaining that it is easier for police to arrest undocumented May 10, 2017
immigrants while they are in a courthouse, since “visitors are typically screened upon entry to search for weapons and other contraband and the safety risks for arresting officers and persons being arrested are substantially decreased.”The US Commission on Civil Rights, a bipartisan independent agency, said last month that courthouse arrests had a “chilling effect” on witnesses and victims of crimes. David Lapan, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, told reporters last month that immigrants who are in the country illegally are not protected because they are victims or witnesses to a crime. “Just because they’re a victim in a certain case does not mean there’s not something in their background that could cause them to be a removable alien,” Lapan said, according to New York Daily News. “Just because they’re a witness doesn’t mean they might not pose a security threat for other reasons.”

Dark’ Comedy Satire Spoofs Hollywood At Desert Rose Theatre By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Plays about Hollywood are easy marks for satire and spoofs due to our human frailty, ambition and a little larceny that resides in all our hearts. Besides, we’ve all seen every conceivable plot and twist over the last hundred years. After all, there are only 36 plotlines according to Shakespeare scholars; making everything else merely variations. The Desert Rose Theatre, of Cathedral City, the only theatrical venue serving the LBGTQ community, is presenting a slick, snappy, and outrageously funny production written by Michael McKeever, that bills itself as a dark comedy spoof/satire entitled “Clark Gable Slept Here”, a Hollywood Fable directed by Resident Director and theatre co-Founder Jim Strait. The play’s message isn’t in the same league with, say, discovering radium, or presenting a plan to end world hunger. It’s just about a drug theft gone hilariously awry that involves: The beautiful, selfobsessed, Hollywood actress Morgan Wright (Yo Younger), her ambitious and crass personal manager Hilly Hilliard (Michael Pacas), the General Manager of Hollywood’s famous watering hole and hotel The Chateau Marmont (Winston Gieseke), Estella, a duplicitous, hotel room maid (Melanie Blue), who harbors a secret (every
satire and spoof has to have a character who does this), and Travis (John Fryer), who is the object of everyone’s curiosity in this somewhat ‘dark’, noir-like comedy whose play title, like everything in this production, has very little connection to Clark Gable other than a couple of references to him as a Hollywood actor. And that’s the only spoiler alert you’re going get from me. Audiences will simply have to see for themselves in order to get into the spirit of the proceedings. What I will tell you is, when you attend, leave the kiddies and grandma at home. This funny and well performed production is strictly an Adult rated play that is in love with f-bombs and all the rest of the words that pass for vernacular discourse on the street these days; along with a little nudity thrown in for good measure. Actually, the nudity is called for, as it’s an important plot point. Director Strait has assembled a cast of talented energetic actors who relish their moments of over-the-top performances. Ms. Younger, as the glamorous Morgan Wright, gives Bonnie Parker and Ma Barker a run for their money as to an Alpha- female who demands compliance to her every wish and command. Pronto! It’s a role female actors love to portray and Ms. Younger has a ball doing it. Talk about that old TV ad about not fooling around with Mother Nature. Yikes! Mr. Pacas, as her snide manager, is the type of character that one would love

The role of the hapless hotel manager Gage Holland, as played by Winston Gieseke, is a study in ‘controlled frustration’ as the only character not involved in the heist/caper, but whose presence is required. It’s a little gem of a performance. Melanie Blue, as Estella, the hysterical maid caught up in the twist and turns of the plot also delivers a gem of a performance. John Fryer as
Travis, the focus of all the onstage shenanigans opens the production and remains an integral mystery man. That’s all that can be said now. However, remember the great Sherlock Holmes’ admonition: “Patience Watson, all will be revealed!” In the creative team led by director Strait, who also designed, the well-appointed, one set hotel suite, is lighted by award-winning designer Phil Murphy, and costumed designed by Allan Jensen, and stage managed by Steve
Fisher. The play is produced by theatre co-founder Paul Taylor. The Desert Rose Theatre, concludes its fifth season with “Clark Gable Slept Here”. It’s a fun romp and a hoot of a satire and spoof about ‘noir Hollywood’ in the 40’s. The production is performed without an intermission (approximately 90 minutes) and runs through May 28, 2017.
