By Desert Star Staff Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest one-day, charitable food drive, and coming up this weekend, Bay Staters are expected to help out with millions of pounds of food, once again. Rick DiCecca, regional administrative assistant for the National Association of Letter Carriers, says families in Massachusetts and all across New England have historically played a major role in this annual food drive. “Last year alone, Massachusetts collected just over 1.5 million pounds of food, which makes a significant dent in filling the shelves of local pantries throughout

the state,” he states. DeCecca says food uncertainty impacts 1 in 6 Americans, even though many are in households where at least one person is working. Bay Staters are encouraged to leave a bag of nonperishable food items on their front porch or at their mailbox for collection on Saturday. This is the 24th year the U.S. Postal Service workers have teamed up with sponsors, including the United Way Worldwide, United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and the AFL-CIO.

Of that 100 or so girls, 31

were recognized and given scholarships. Each girl was also given a Teddy Bear as a memento of the day. Some of the girls were given $500 and $1000 for colleges of their choice. A few were given full four-year scholarships that will help them in their career paths. Many of these girls are 1st time college students in their families. The girls carry

high GPA scores to get these gifts from Ophelia. They also are involved in many ways with school activities and Community projects. Berenice Ayala spoke about how she became an Ophelia Girl and how it changed her life for the better. She said that she did not know where she would be now if it wasn’t for

Ophelia’s mentoring and help. Ophelia program was the best choice she made in her life. Ophelia thinks that if you educate a girl, you educate a community. It takes $350.00 per school year to sponsor one girl. Ophelia is basically a mentoring program and there are 650 girls in the program. Mentors spend over 20,000

hours to help these girls with school, studies and life. They say that once an Ophelia girl you will always be an Ophelia Girl. They are sisters together. The Opehila Girls did an Art Project this year. Each girl was given a 1x2 piece of fabric in Red White and Blue, decorated that piece of fabric, and then they sewed it together to make it a very large American Flag. They made five flags in all to represent the schools they were from. The awards ceremony was held after lunch was served. Girls came up in groups of 5 to get their scholarship awards. The success stories that come from former Ophelia’s girls go on and on. Families and Girls all benefit from this program as it helps provide a better quality of life through education.

Has Main Street given up on Wall Street?

By Janice Gough This is a question facing many investors today. When we consider the changes in the market over the past 15 years, and currently are experiencing the secular market of today, many people have lost faith in Wall Street and may not be in a position to take further risks. After enduring the dot-com boom and bust, the housing bubble, a full-blown financial crisis followed by an awful stockmarket crash, a whipsawing commodities market and almost zero returns on cash savings, investors are suffering

from financial fatigue and have little interest or faith in anything that Wall Street is selling. After having been so badly beaten up, have investors decided to take their ball and go home? And by ball, I mean capital, and by home, I mean low-cost index funds or safer investments, like indexed annuities. Active management, in which a fund manager selects specific assets for investment, has failed to outsize performance over safer investments, and is getting harder to achieve. We all know that indexing is cheaper than active management, but the question is why has passive investing been so successful during the past few years? And why has active management, especially since the financial crisis, had such a dismal run? One reason is that there is much more competition in the market and active management fees are not equating to the lower returns. Additionally, the internet could be leveling the playing field. The information that once was the province of a select few is now in the hands of all. It was a huge game-changer when Yahoo message boards begin to fill up with posts from people doing legwork on individual companies. When someone reported that XYZ ‘s employee parking lots were filled with cars 24/7 — including weekends — anyone paying attention understood that business was booming and that sales were going to beat investor

expectations. For the few who grasped that, this was a period of large trading profits. And to go further, there is a loss of faith in Wall Street. We continually learn of a new type of fraud and a new scheme that prays on our investments. To remind you of the most current, we have experienced Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, gaming closing times for mutual funds, and spinning initial public offerings. Spinning an IPO is the act or practice of an investment bank under-priceing shares of a company’s initial public offering to the senior executives of a third party company in exchange for future business with the investment bank. This conflict of interest was a relatively common way for investment banks to attract new clients in the past, but has since been prohibited. IPO spinning is a disguised form of corporate bribery and it cheats two classes of investors: The shareholders in the third party company who are unable to receive similar favorable IPO terms as those received by its senior executives, and that constitutes a breach of fiduciary duty to shareholders, specifically that they not use their corporate office to extract favors that are not shared equally by all shareholders, whereas, the retail shareholders are compelled to purchase large sizes of stock in an IPO at exorbitant prices from the special favored executive friends of the brokerage who underwrites the IPO.

In the past few years, the Justice Department seems to have rediscovered insider trading. We need stricter enforcement of insider trading laws. Financial scandals continue to run rampant. Why have laws not change regarding investor fraud? It is relatively simple to prosecute, there is often lots of unambiguous evidence, and the odds of a conviction are high. Could it be the power of Wall Street and political power staying off stricter laws? Hence, even a market that is not perfectly efficient quickly eliminates almost

all of the potential alpha, or above-market returns. Being smart, hard-working and savvy may create only a short-lived advantage -- or none at all. Theories abound and none are completely dispositive, but all have some merit in explaining the reasons for underperformance. Janice Gough is a financial advisor in Palm Springs. HOA Homefront - The Problem with Proxies By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Association election contests can be controversial, and proxies all too often add to the controversy. What is a proxy? A proxy is a document by which one association member authorizes another to vote for them. Unless banned by governing documents, proxies are allowed in non-profit mutual benefit corporations under Corporations Code 7613 and Civil Code 5130. The three types of proxies. The three varieties of proxy are the directed proxy, the general proxy and the quorumonly proxy. Directed proxies instruct the proxy holder how to vote. By a general proxy, the member gives their voting rights to another person who may vote as they see fit. The proxy for quorum purposes only is self-explanatory, in that the member does not wish to vote or to give their vote to someone else but desires to help the association attain quorum. What makes a proxy

“legal”? For general or quorum-only proxies, the requirements are very simple. Per Corporations Code Sections 178 and 7613, a proxy need only express that a member authorizes someone else to vote for them. Section 178 requires proxies be “signed” by the maker, although the definition of “signed” is much broader than simply a signature. By implication, the statute requires proxies to be dated. A proxy could be on the back of a parking receipt, or a napkin. Associations insisting upon an “official” proxy form are mistaken, and often spark unnecessary disputes with members who submit “unofficial” proxies which still meet the very minimal legal requirements. Civil Code 5130(a)(1) adds another simple limitation - a proxy may only be given by a member to another member (not a relative, or tenant, for example). Some special issues, such as recall or ratifying contracts with a director, must be mentioned on the general proxy for it to be May 11, 2016

usable on those issues. Special requirements for directed proxies. Directed proxies are not useful because of the extra steps required by law. Under Civil Code 5130(c), directed proxies must have a detachable sheet telling the proxyholder how to vote. The proxyholder keeps that sheet, and then casts a secret ballot. However, since the ballots are secret, there is no way to confirm that the proxyholder voted the ballot as instructed. Proxy termination date. Proxies without a stated expiration date automatically expire in eleven months. A proxy cannot state an expiration date longer than three years. Proxies are revocable. Proxies may be revoked by the member actually voting a ballot. They may also be revoked by issuing a later dated proxy or by writing a revocation. Problems with general proxies. There is no reliable way for Inspectors of Election to confirm the date or validity of a member’s signature. Some members play games with proxies, leaving

dates blank, or collecting them under questionable circumstances. Proxy issues are one of the most common disputes in HOA elections. Proxies are unhelpful. The problems with general proxies far outweigh any real benefit. Since members have at least 30 days to cast their ballots in an “absentee” fashion, there is no need to give one’s right to vote to another. Consider amending your association’s bylaws to allow proxies only for the purpose of establishing quorum. Your association will have simpler elections - and your Inspectors of Election (and also lawyer and manager) will thank you. Kelly G. Anti-corruption Watchdogs slam U.S. rules on money laundering By Desert Star Staff CARSON CITY, Nev. – On the eve of this week’s anti-corruption summit in London, consumer watchdog groups maintain the Obama administration’s response so far to the Panama Papers money-laundering scandal is inadequate. They’re saying it could worsen Nevada’s and the U.S.’s reputation as a haven for corporate crime. Last week, the White House finalized a Treasury Department rule requiring banks to determine who really owns a company, as a way to root out shell corporations laundering money. But Elise Bean, a former chief counsel for the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, says the rule doesn’t make the bank verify that the “beneficial owner” named by the company is the

true owner, not a stand-in. “We’re inviting people who want to hide their identity to U.S. banks, because the only person they’re going to have to name is the manager of their corporation, which could be a law firm employee or an offshore corporateservice provider,” she states. The Panama Papers include records from an offshore law firm that revealed shell companies incorporated in Nevada are linked to hundreds of millions of dollars in losses from schemes to defraud Medicare, elderly investors and people in the armed forces. The Obama administration also released the outlines of forthcoming legislation to improve transparency. Mark Hays, a senior policy adviser at watchdog group Global Witness, stresses it still has gaping loopholes. “We believe it needs to have a strong, beneficial

ownership definition, that the information needs to be collected in a timely fashion, and that information needs to be kept up-to-date,” he states. “And then, there needs to be broad access

to that information – at a minimum, access for many levels of law enforcement.” On the other hand, he says Global Witness is praising more comprehensive bills recently introduced in the

tactics based on the season. A tax scam is circulating now in which someone calls pretending to be from the Internal Revenue Service, advising you there’s a problem with your tax return. Moyo said the revenue service never tries to settle a debt over the phone. “Then, the other thing to remember is when you’re dealing with the IRS or someone saying they’re calling from the IRS,” Moyo said, “that there’s always a way to mediate that debt in a non sort of threatening manner.” Abagnale is appearing at the Indianapolis Museum of Art on April 28. The presentation is free. Preregistration is required

and can be completed at the AARP IN Frank Abagnale Fraud Event web page. Moyo said another popular scam at this time of year centers around spring break and summer travel. A scammer calls pretending to be a child or grandchild who’s been arrested in another country and needs bail money. Moyo said scammers use your emotions to manipulate you. They “will get you scared or frightened or intimidate you,” he said. They’ll say “ ‘If you don’t handle this, the sheriff will come and arrest you,’ and do other things like that.” Moyo said to always get a callback number and never give out personal information over the telephone.

Former Thief Has Advice on How to Avoid Being Scammed It can take a crook to catch a crook. By Desert Star Staff Frank W. Abagnale, whose unlawful exploits were portrayed in the film “Catch Me If You Can,” knows all about scamming. After finally being caught, he has spent the last 40 years helping the FBI catch con artists. He’s now assisting AARP Indiana by giving a free presentation about fraud. Mandla Moyo, community outreach director for AARP Indiana, said Abagnale’s advice is crucial because scammers are always eager to take your money, and they change

Explosive TTIP documents expose corporate takeover

By Desert Star Staff Climate protection, jobs, food safety and online privacy rights will be whittled away under the controversial Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), an explosive tranche of leaked documents reveal. The text of the secretive EU-US trade negotiations indicate the watershed deal could tear asunder longheld environmental and consumer protections many Europeans hold dear. Greenpeace Netherlands published the classified documents on Monday to dismantle a veil of secrecy over the trade agreement and lay bare its implications for climate protection, human health, workers’ rights, internet privacy rights and the very social fabric of Europe itself. The NGO, which has a long history of environmental campaign work and research, obtained the documents from an unknown source. Green Peace Netherlands worked with a number of high-profile media outlets on the data, including Hamburgbased TV station NDR, Cologne-headquartered public broadcasting group WDR and renowned Munich-based newspaper Süddeutscher Zeitung. 1. Death knell for TTIP? The leak shines a light directly on the negotiation positions of the EU and the US, and gives the roughly 1 billion citizens in the EU and US the opportunity to have an informed debate on TTIP. TTIP’s opponents from Bristol to Brussels have branded the disclosures the trade agreement’s death knell. Executive Director of UK social justice campaign War on Want John Hilary said the leak shows how TTIP poses a direct threat to jobs, food safety and the democratic foundations of Europe. “It is even worse than we feared,” Hilary said. “Today’s leak shows the European Commission preparing to sell us down the river, doing deals behind closed doors that will change the face of

European society forever. “It is simply unacceptable that a group of unelected officials should be allowed to contemplate such a thing without any public scrutiny.” Hilary suggested the leak signals TTIP’s demise. “Total secrecy was the only way the European Commission could keep the European people from learning the truth about these appalling negotiations, and now the cat is out of the bag,” he said. “We call on the governments of Europe to halt the TTIP talks immediately, disband the EU negotiating team and hold a public inquiry into how such a damaging set of negotiations was ever allowed to get this far.” Following in-depth analysis of the leaked documents, Greenpeace International and other antiTTIP groups highlighted a number of key criticisms. 1. Profit over humanity, animal & plant life The leaked negotiating texts indicate that TTIP, in its current form, will likely see progressive EU policies that were put in place to protect the planet scrapped. Absent from the 248-page leak is a single reference to what’s known as the General Exceptions rule. This 70-year-old regulation, enshrined in the World Trade Organization (WTO)’s General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), ensures that cross-border trade deals are regulated in a manner that protects human, animal and plant life – while preventing over-consumption of valuable natural resources. 2. Eroded climate protections Also absent from the vast collection of negotiation texts is a mention of what many environmental commentators dub the most pressing issue of our time: climate protection. Greenpeace Netherlands notes that key chapters in the leaked negotiation texts, namely “Market Access for Industrial Goods” and “Regulatory Cooperation,” outline proposals for limiting the impact and scope of

vital measures put in place to tackle climate change. One particularly troubling concern flagged by the NGO is the fact that EU regulation on importing CO2heavy fuels like Tar Sands and oil would evaporate under these proposals. Such a policy shift undercuts one of the key environmental protection strategies laid out under the Paris Climate Agreement: to limit further temperature increases to less than 1.5 degrees. An overwhelming majority of climate scientists across the globe – climate sceptics excluded – argue anything less will entrench the climate crisis, endangering billions worldwide. 3. Gateway for hazardous chemicals & GM food The precautionary principle, which is laid out in Article 191 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, is also absent from the vast collection of negotiation texts. The measure aims to build a better framework of environmental protections via risk analysis and policy intervention. In the case of products that could endanger human, plant or animal life – or could cause environmental degradation – it can be used as a vital tool to withdraw hazardous commodities from the market. It is also used to strip suspect produce from market circulation in cases where aggregate scientific research does not offer a comprehensive picture of potential risks. The leaked negotiation texts also reveal that TTIP will open European floodgates

to US-produced genetically modified (GM) food and other products currently prohibited in the EU on environmental and public health grounds. Campaigners warn this would signal the abandonment of vital European regulatory standards. 4. Bias toward big business While corporations have been afforded a glowing opportunity to have their say on TTIP, civil society has had virtually no access to the secretive negotiations. Embedded in the 248page collection of leaked documents is a clear bias towards big business. While civil society actors have been largely locked out of talks, the leaked papers reveal the iron-cast influence corporate actors have wrought over negotiations. The European Commission (EC) has been anything but transparent about the extent of this corporate influence. The body’s most recent report on TTIP only mentions industry involvement in the talks once, while the leaked documents published on Monday show that industry input has been dutifully noted and collected throughout the negotiation process. The leaked texts also regularly reference a need for further consultation with corporate actors. 5. ISDS mechanism: a done deal? Analysis of the leaked documents show that the investor state dispute settlement (ISDS) clause central to TTIP is a high priority for Washington. The court mechanism would allow corporations to sue

governments for damaging profits. Leaked negotiation texts, published on Monday, show the US has shot down proposed alternatives to this measure tabled by the EU. Critics warn EC negotiators appear prepared to barter away EU states’ economic sovereignty for a quick buck born of US corporate contracts. Faiza Oulahsen, a lead campaigner for Greenpeace Netherlands, said civil society across Europe should be concerned about what the leaked documents uncover. “Whether you care about environmental issues, animal welfare, labor rights or internet privacy, you should be concerned about what is in these leaked documents,” she said. “They underline the strong objections civil society and millions of people around the world have voiced: TTIP is about a huge transfer of democratic power from people to big business. We call on all elected representative and other concerned parties to read these documents and engage in the debate.” The TTIP negotiation texts represent 13 of the 17 chapters that have been consolidated so far by the EC. They had previously been shrouded in secrecy, viewable only by elected members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and other key Eurocrats. Those privy to the secretive texts were confined to reading them in a security-proofed chamber, in the absence of expert consultants. They were also banned from discussing their content with others.

By Desert Star Staff SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - A group of Illinois urban and rural public-policy activists holds a protest in Chicago today, to unveil what it calls a “People and Planet First Budget.” Illinois is the only state operating without a budget for the current year. The activist group Fair Economy Illinois argues the state needs new revenue as vital public services continue to lose funding. Volunteer Ann Marie

Cunningham says the new budget alternative would bring in about $23 billion, partly from new taxes on corporations and the state’s top earners. “We have been doing ‘Moral Mondays’ to bring to light the fact people are hurting, because we do not have a budget,” says Cunningham. “Not having enough food, not having housing.” State lawmakers are still mired in a nearly yearlong budget impasse, but a bipartisan group is trying to

work out a compromise plan. Today’s budget protest takes place at noon at the Federal Plaza in Chicago. Some of the new revenue ideas in Fair Economy Illinois’ budget include what it’s calling a “LaSalle Street Tax,” a reference to Chicago’s financial district. Cunningham says it would raise about $12 billion for state services by enacting a small tax on financial trades of such assets as stocks and bonds. “You pay taxes on milk

and bread, and yet there are thousands of transactions every day at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the Board of Trade, and those exchanges are never taxed,” she says. But critics of the financialtransaction tax, including some economists, argue that at worst, that idea could drive the financial industry out of the state altogether. And Gov. Bruce Rauner has said he will not consider any new revenue options unless lawmakers agree to parts of

his controversial “Turnaround Agenda,” which includes business-friendly changes to union bargaining rules. Still, Cunningham argues legislators should focus on finding new sources of funding, to shore up state colleges, healthcare and human services. “This is about revenue and not about cuts,” says Cunningham. “The money is there, but the leaders in Springfield are not calling that money forth.”

Puerto Rico reports 1st US Zika-related death amid outbreak By Danica Coto And Mike Stobbe SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Puerto Rico announced Friday that it has recorded the first Zika-related U.S. death amid an outbreak of the mosquitoborne virus in the U.S. territory. Health Secretary Ana Rius said the victim is a 70-year-old man from the San Juan metro area who died in late February. The U.S. territory is battling more than 700 Zika cases and seeks federal funds to help prevent an epidemic at a time of worsening economic crisis. Officials said the unidentified man recovered from initial Zika symptoms, but then developed a condition in which antibodies that formed in reaction to the Zika infection started attacking blood platelet cells. He died after suffering internal bleeding. Rius said the man died less than 24 hours after

seeking help at a health center. She said three other cases of the condition known as severe thrombocytopenia have been reported in Puerto Rico, and that those patients recovered successfully. Three similar Zikarelated deaths also have been recorded in the South American country of Colombia, said Tyler Sharp of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Zika-related deaths in adults are considered extremely rare. The virus causes only a mild and brief illness, at worst, in most people. CA Progressive Groups Launch “Building the California Dream Alliance”

director of policy advocacy for the Western Center on Law and Poverty, said it will help struggling families. “Today, if a family is already receiving welfare assistance and they have another child, that child does not get assistance from the state of California,” she said. “It’s really built on some old-fashioned, sexist, racist notion that a woman would actually have a baby in order to get more welfare payments.” Among the bills on the “dream killer” list are proposals that would weaken the California Environmental Quality Act, roll back overtime protections for domestic workers, and reduce penalties on employers who violate the labor code.

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. More than two dozen California progressive organizations announced Wednesday they’re forming a new coalition called

the “Building the California Dream Alliance.” The groups advocate for many different issues ranging from gender equity, environmental justice, workers’ rights, immigrant

rights, health care and more. Jon Youngdahl, executive director of the Service Employees International Union, said they are now banding together to release

a list of bills they call dream builders and dream killers to counter the “job killer” list put out by the California Chamber of Commerce. “For far too long, we’ve allowed a few CEOs to limit what’s possible in California,” he said. “In our dream builder’s list, we’ll define a new progressive vision for a Golden State of unlimited opportunity regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, immigration status, disability, health status or age.” Senate Bill 43, which would end solitary confinement for juveniles, is one of the bills the Alliance considers a “dream builder.” Another is Senate Bill 23, which would roll back the maximum family grant in the Cal Works welfare program. By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES - As the National Park Service turns 100 this summer, a broad coalition of conservation, civil rights, environmental justice and faith-based groups is pressing the White House to make public lands more welcoming to people of color. The group has launched a petition on Change.Org asking President Obama to instruct the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service to develop more policies that are inclusive. Jose Gonzalez, founder of the group Latino Outdoors, said hiring more park rangers of color would be a great start. “They know that action needs to be taken, but we’re still looking at agencies that are not representative of the

population at large,” he said. “The Park Service is still 80 percent-plus Caucasian white.” He said the groups also will submit a list of policy goals along with the petition. One goal was closer Tuesday when it was reported the administration plans to declare a national monument in the struggle for gay rights at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Mark Masaoka is the policy director of the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council, an association of 45 Asian Pacific nonprofits in Los Angeles County. He would like future monuments that spotlight environmental heroes from communities of color. He suggests one more potential project for the list: a monument in Delano, in the central valley, to Filipino-American Larry

Itliong, who co-founded the United Farmworkers Union. “They have one for Cesar Chavez, and we’d like to see a monument for the Filipino role,” he said. “In fact, it was the Filipino workers who initiated the strike that Cesar Chavez later joined and the Filipino and Latino organizations then formed the United Farm Workers Union.” Advocates hope the next president will be as conservation-minded as President Obama, who has created 23 new national monuments, changed the name of Mount McKinley back to Denali, and created the “Every Kid in a Park” program that gives all fourth graders a free pass to a national park.

A coalition of groups has launched a petition asking President Obama to make public lands more welcoming to minority groups. (Latino Outdoors)

Palm Desert Showcases “Vision San Pablo

By Carlos Herrera PALM DESERT, Ca. -Palm Desert opened its streets to promote its “vision of a community that is friendlier to walkers and bicyclists. The city showcased a version of that vision along San Pablo Avenue. “Vision San Pablo is a corridor that promotes safer streets for walking and biking and creates a downtown area in Palm Desert. At Saturday’s street-fair, residents had a chance to see what the vision is all about. “This type of vision is really great for the city here on San Pablo because there is a lot of room and a lot of places people don’t even know are here, Palm Desert resident Conrad Negron said. Residents had a chance to see how the city’s proposed “Vision San Pablo would look like. The result, a new pedestrian- friendly downtown area with traffic lane reduction on each direction of San Pablo Ave. between Fred Waring Dr. and Highway 111, wider bike lanes, nicer sidewalks, street

The city is using the project to highlight their community businesses as well as create a pedestrian- friendly path to

businesses on Highway 111 and El Paseo. “We’ve been working on our plan to create a downtown city center and we have really identified this area, it’s really slowing down traffic really making it a lot safe for them, associate planner for the city of Palm Desert, Eric Ceja said. And residents are all for it. Some resident envision San Pablo will be the new

hot spot in town. “I imagine it as a destination here in Palm Desert where more people and more families could come and walk around and have the room and safety to walk around, Negron said. The city will vote on the proposed project in July. If approved, it could be completed in the next four years. Source KMIR

High-Speed Internet Access Benefits National Economy

By Desert Star Staff Having higher speed internet access can do more than simply improve your family’s enjoyment of entertainment and games. Today, experts say that better broadband connectivity is helping people gain access to additional medical care through telemedicine, enabling children to access multimedia educational resources, improving small businesses’ ability to interact with customers and suppliers, and even helping improve the broader economy nationwide. “The Economic Impact of Rural Broadband, a new report released by the Hudson Institute and commissioned by the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS), reveals that investments made by rural broadband providers have had a significant impact on both urban and rural economies. In fact, 46 percent of the jobs supported by economic activity created by rural broadband companies are in rural areas while 54 perfect are in urban areas. www.desertstarweekly.com

At a time when the ability to complete a transaction electronically has become indispensable, the report highlights the economic benefits of broadband on both urban and rural communities. “The advancement and viability of our rural American communities is not just a

rural issue but a national imperative, says FRS executive director, Jessica Golden. “Rural broadband contributes to not only the rural economy but to the nation’s economy as a whole. Indeed, rural broadband companies contributed more than $24 billion to the U.S.

Additionally, over $100 billion in e-commerce was supported by rural broadband, with the largest share drawn from the manufacturing sector. Beyond these direct economic benefits of rural broadband services come secondary benefits for the nearly 20 percent of Americans living in rural communities: access to distance education, telemedicine, remote monitoring systems aided by live-stream video, and multi-participant interactive programming. “While technical challenges still remain, it is clear that investing in rural broadband will have far-reaching positive impacts for both urban and rural America, says Golden. How to get hired right out of college By Desert Star Staff Improving economic conditions have finally caught up to millennia’s, providing them with a brighter job market, according to the United States Department of Labor. But a recent Federal Reserve Bank of New York report says the devil is in the details. Not all new college graduates are doing equally well. The kind of degree they earned is an enormous factor in the job hunt. “There’s no question that your field of study significantly alters your prospects, but even having chosen the right field is no guarantee,” says Matt Stewart, an entrepreneur and co-founder of College Works Painting (www.collegeworks. com), an internship program that provides practical business experience for college students. “How you approach your field, such as engagement at an internship, can boost your professional prospects immensely.” For example, interns with College Works Painting operate their own house-

painting business with hands-on guidance from mentors. They learn valuable leadership skills by functioning as leaders in a business. “Unemployment for our alumni has remained at less than 4 percent, including when youth unemployment exceeded 16 percent a few years ago,” Stewart says. “This kind of challenging yet fun student experience helps ensure a good career for college graduates right out of the gate.” He offers tips about what students should look for in an internship so they can gain the professional experience they need to land a job after graduation. • Know what you will actually be doing. While simply being in a company’s culture has value, many businesses assign students to their lowest-level work. Grunt work, to some extent, is a fact of life in most professions. But that kind of work won’t propel a student’s career. Consider an internship that gives you real responsibility and provides experiences that will definitely come in handy in your future career.

• Consider a company’s internship recognition. Don’t accept an internship with just any organization. Think about the business awards the company has won, the type of articles that have been written about the company, and how the company contributes to their industry and community. If you can, get information on how other former interns fared. May 11, 2016

• For any student, real experience is crucial. Whether you’re an artist, athlete, musician, theater major, English student, a STEMfield student, or a business major or future entrepreneur, getting experience often comes with a heavy price. This includes the loss of personal or family finances. Look for opportunities that provide guidance while

allowing you to apply skills to real-life challenges such as budgeting, marketing, and managing employees. These are transferable skills that apply to any industry. “Regardless of how the economy is doing, you’ll want to put forth your best effort,” Stewart says. “As we’ve seen, the market can take a nosedive at any time.” www.desertstarweekly.com

E N T E RTA I N M E N T Actress Charlotte Stewart Pens Her Memoir BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

Actress Charlotte Stewart

Before she landed the iconic role of Miss Eva Beadle in the long-running hit “Little House on the Prairie,” Charlotte Stewart had appeared in dozens of prime-time programs ranging from “Gunsmoke,” “Hawaii Five-O” and “The

Waltons” to “Mannix” and “My Three Sons.” She also performed in countless commercials. However, it was her role as the 19th century schoolmarm in Minnesota that endeared her to countless millions of viewers worldwide.

In her memoir “Little House in the Hollywood Hills” she talks about the call from her agent asking her if she would like to audition for a new TV show based on the book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Stewart was not familiar with the books, but decided to audition because she had worked with Michael Landon before on “Bonanza” and considered him “an unusually talented guy who could write, act, produce, direct —and look great on a horse. Serious skills.” Alison Arngrim, who played Nellie Oleson in the series, describes Charlotte’s book as “An inspiring story

By Desert Star Staff By the time average American children reach age 17, their eyes will have spent the equivalent of nearly six years looking at digital devices, according to findings from a new survey by VSP Vision Care. While the survey shows that parents are concerned with increasing screen time, it found that nearly 60 percent have little to no awareness of blue light -- the high-energy light emitted from digital devices -- and its impact on vision. As blue light enters the eye, it causes visual strain because it is defocused in front of the retina and scatters, creating an effect visually perceived as glare. The eyes are then forced to work overtime to focus and process the wavelengths of light. From smartphones, to tablets, laptops, televisions, and even CFL and LED lighting, today’s family is surrounded by devices that produce blue light. As we spend increasing amounts of time staring at screens, blue light exposure is reaching unprecedented levels. This has led to an alarming increase in reports of digital

eye strain, especially amongst children who are experiencing tired, sore eyes, headaches and trouble focusing. “At home, in classrooms and at work, our eyes are exposed to blue light,” says VSP optometrist, Dr. Gary Morgan. “Technology continues to change the way we live and allows us to be more efficient and connected, but despite its benefits, we must be mindful of the impact of increased blue light exposure on our eyes.” Dr. Morgan offers the following tips to reduce blue light exposure and maintain good eye health. • Get an Eye Exam: An annual trip to the eye doctor is critical for the entire family. Ask your eye doctor about the best options to help reduce eye strain, including eyeglass lenses with coatings that reflect and absorb blue light, like Sharper Image TechShield. • Observe the 20/20/20 Rule: Give eyes a break every 20 minutes and spend 20 seconds looking at something at least 20 feet away. • Maintain Digital Distance: Find a comfortable working

distance from your screen. This is especially important for children, since the intensity of light increases exponentially the closer our eyes are to light sources. Children have shorter arms and therefore receive a more intense dose of blue light from devices. They should hold devices as far away from their eyes as is comfortable. • Lower Screen Brightness:

She also talks about working with countless leading men from Jimmy Stewart and Elvis Presley to Kevin Bacon and Kyle MacLachlan and details her marriages, friendships and flings with some of the film and music’s biggest names. T H E AT R E HONKY – A Seriously Hilarious Comedy BY BEVERLY COHN

Burl Moseley as Thomas (center) is surrounded by two thugs - (L) Christian Henley and Matthew Hancock. Photo by John Perrin Flynn A revival of Greg Kalleres’ politically incorrect HONKY is not for the squeamish politically correct individual as it presses the racist button at every twist and turn of the action. Originally premiered in New York, HONKY was subsequently performed on PBS television and one must wonder how the heavy usage of mother-f@#@ got past the censors. A one-act play sans intermission, it made its West Coast premiere at the San Diego Repertory Theatre and to say the play has travelled well would be an understatement. Under the sharp, commanding direction of Gregg T. Daniel, who assembled a most talented ensemble, the play moves along at breakneck speed, maintaining the brisk pacing even during the multiple scene changes designed by Stephanie Kerley Schwartz, whimsically lit by Dan Weingarten, and underscored with a catchy sound design by Jeff Gardner. Using designer basketball shoes as a metaphor for race relations, as well who is allowed to use the “N” word, the story revolves around an incident where a young African-

American boy named Charlie Cross was shot and killed for a pair of Skymax basketball shoes. The controversial advertising campaign, approved by the president of the company Davis Tallison, well played by Bruce Nozick, was deliberately geared towards the urban population, code for the African-American consumer. The commercial ended with the word “S’up.” Mirroring the commercial, the shooter used “S’up” before killing the sneaker-wearing dude. Following the shooting, much to Nozick’s delight, sales to white kids increased dramatically, contributing hugely to the company’s bottom line. He is serious when he says, “I will even be happier when white kids start killing for sneakers.” Despite the success of the campaign, representing the board of directors, Dr. Driscoll played by Ron Bottitta has some surprising news for Nozick who, in his ignorance, refers to the “Jim Croce Laws.” James Liebman brilliantly plays the continuously conflicted Peter Trammel, who can’t seem to complete a sentence without wandering off into non-sequiturs. He’s

the guy who wrote the copy for the commercial and has taken personal responsibility for the death of the young man. The African-American designer Thomas Hodge, sensitively played by Burl Moseley, designed the shoe. He is conflicted about his work and the fact that he came from an affluent family and didn’t grow up in the “hood.” Will I be accused of racism by referring to Hodge’s ethnicity? This is precisely what the play is about - confusion over what is and what isn’t politically correct. Taking you back to the beginning, the opening scene shows two young men, Matthew Hancock and Christian Henley, in the deadly slow-motion basketball sequence, which sets up the ensuing craziness. In the very next scene, Tom and Davis are having a conversation. He is clueless about his own racism and easily tosses around inappropriate references. Meanwhile, the overwrought Peter, goes into therapy with Emilia Hodge who is uh, black and Thomas’ sister. Played with an initial professional demeanor, Inger Tudor as the therapist probes into Peter’s

apparent racial discomfort. It’s a very funny scene as Peter goes through great lengths to make a point of not being racist but every word he utters is black related and he succeeds in digging his own grave by trying to correct everything he blurts out. In one of his slips of the tongue he describes his fiancée Andie as white, sinking deeper and deeper into a hole. The seemingly patient Emilia isn’t exactly who she appears to be and there are some amusing revelations into her own struggles and what she has to do to function. In one of the scenes with her brother Thomas, she asks him what he wants to talk about and he answers “Black shit.” Peter’s fiancée Andie is a rather innocent scatterbrain who says whatever comes into her head without any filtering. A talented adorable Tasha Ames brings this lovable character to life. Her scenes with Peter illuminate her bona fide innocence contrasted against Peter’s guilt, who is tormented by his lack of understanding of anything.

Eventually she meets Thomas at a Skymax function. There is an immediate mutual attraction and they begin an affair. At one point, he comments “I find you refreshing for a cracker bitch.” In this send-up, racism is a two-way street. Playwright Kalleres, formerly a copywriter for a New York advertising company, brings satirical insight into ongoing racial struggles and white guilt, as well as a comedic examination of targeted marketing. He does all this with a playful wink at the audience who had a really good time on opening night.

The Truth about Hot Peppers

By Melinda Myers Don’t be afraid to add a little spicy heat to your meals this season by growing a few hot peppers in the garden or containers. It’s easier than you think and many of the hot pepper myths floating around the garden are simply not true. Don’t worry about your hot peppers heating up your sweet peppers. Peppers are normally self-pollinated. If an insect happens to move the pollen from a hot to sweet pepper, it will not affect the flavor or heat of this year’s harvest. If you save the seeds from a cross-pollinated pepper and plant them in next year’s garden, the plants they produce may have hot or sweet fruit (or a little of both), but only time will tell. And don’t assume all green peppers are sweet or you will be in for a surprise. Jalapenos are typically harvested when green and others, like habanero, Anaheim and Poblano are hot, whether harvested

when green or red. You’ll also find that hot peppers can be yellow, orange, brown and of course red. You can turn down the heat when preparing your favorite recipes, too. Contrary to popular belief, all the heat in hot peppers does not come from the seeds. While partially true, the majority of the capsaicin that gives hot peppers their heat is in the white membrane that houses the seeds. When the seeds are growing, they may also be coated with extra capsaicin from the membrane. So, remove the white membrane and the seeds, just to be safe, if you want to turn down the heat. The spicy heat of hot peppers is measured in Scoville Heat Units. The ratings are based on the amount of sugar water needed to neutralize the spicy heat in the extracted capsaicin that has been diluted in an alcohol-based extract. A panel of five taste testers

decides when the spicy heat has been neutralized and then assigns the rating. Today many companies use a chemical process (liquid chromatography) but translate their results into the popular Scoville heat units. The Scoville heat unit ratings vary from one type of hot pepper to another, with Poblano rating between 1000 to 2000, jalapenos 2500 to 6000, habaneros at 100,000 to 300,000 and one of the hottest, the ghost pepper, at 1,000,000 to 2,200,000 Scoville heat units. Check online or the Homegrown with Bonnie Plants mobile app (for iOs and Android) for the Scoville ratings, growing tips and a Pepper Chooser to help you pick the best varieties to grow. Ratings may also vary from individual plants within a specific type based on individual plant differences and the growing conditions. Whatever kind you grow, be sure to label hot peppers when planting, harvesting

and storing to avoid any mix-ups. The sweet banana pepper, for example, can easily be confused with hot banana. This could make for an unwelcome surprise when preparing, serving and eating. Also, consider wearing rubber gloves and avoid touching your face and eyes when working with hot peppers, as they can burn. Wash your hands, utensils and

cutting boards when finished to avoid any future issues. And don’t worry if you are having a bad day when planting your hot peppers. Contrary to some old adages, planting hot peppers when you’re angry won’t make the peppers hotter, but unknowingly taking a bite of a hot pepper may very well change your mood. MUSIC Coachella and Stagecoach veterans display brilliance on new albums BY ROBERT KINSLER

My recent treks to the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals reminded me yet again about the never-ending joy of musical discovery. In this column, I feature the latest albums from several artists I caught in Indio this year, as well as masterworks from Coachella 2012 headliner Radiohead and Stagecoach 2012 standout the Jayhawks. Artist: Radiohead Title: A Moon Shaped Pool (XL Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Radiohead, Atoms for Peace Tell me more: Any doubts about whether Radiohead remains rock’s greatest contemporary artist were solidified with the release of the band’s ninth studio album “A Moon Shaped Pool” on May 8, 2016. Listening to the 11-track release is to be immersed in a world blending acoustic, symphonic and electronic soundscapes adorned with

intoxicating rhythms, sound effects and singer Thom Yorke’s ethereal vocals. “Burn the Witch” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor Rich Man Poor Man Beggar Man Thief” in particular benefit from the use of orchestra, while the more intimate “Daydreaming” evokes just as much power with a quiet intro anchored around Yorke’s high-reaching vocals and a piano artfully layered with other sounds; after four minutes or so the song’s dynamics explode into an orchestral eruption that is both beautiful and, ultimately, unsettling via some guttural noises. A fearless and masterful return. Although “A Moon Shaped Pool” was only released digitally on May 8, the album will be released on audio CD and vinyl on June 17. Information: radiohead.com. Artist: The Jayhawks Title: Paging Mr. Proust (Sham) You might like if you enjoy:

Dawes, Neil Young, R.E.M. Tell me more: Just as Radiohead was formed in 1985 and has served as a groundbreaking force in the alt rock universe since the early ‘90s, the Minneapolis-spawned Jayhawks also formed in 1985 and have proved to be an enduring and essential artist on the Americana and alternative country music scene. On the group’s recently-issued ninth album “Paging Mr. Proust,” long-time band mates Gary Louris (lead vocals, guitar), Karen Grotberg (keyboards, vocals), Marc Perlman (bass), Tim O’Reagan (vocals, drums, percussion) and newcomer Kraig Johnson (electric guitar) deliver shimmering power-pop (“I’ll Be Your Key,” “Leaving the Monsters Behind”), baroque pop (“Pretty Roses in Your Hair,” “Isabel’s Daughter”) and alt country (“The Devil Is In Her Eye”). Produced by Peter Buck (of R.E.M. fame), Tucker Martine and Louris, “Paging Mr. Proust” moves

the Jayhawks forward while showcasing the impeccable song craft, amazing vocal harmonies and instrumental chops that have made the band an American treasure for three decades. Information: JayhawksOfficial.com.

Artist: Pete Yorn Title: ArrangingTime (Capitol) You might like if you enjoy: Beck, Ron Sexsmith Tell me more: Singersongwriter Pete Yorn turned in one of the strongest sets at Weekend #2 of Coachella, so it isn’t all surprising that his latest studio disc “ArrangingTime” is such a joy. There is a hypnotic quality to the sound of the album overall, even while all the songs stand on their own and enjoy specific arcs. While the songs are accessible, there is an artistry that means the rich nuances of the tracks reveal themselves more with each listen. My favorites include folk rocker “Halifax,”

the lush “She Was Weird” and irresistible “Tomorrow.” Information: peteyorn.com.

Artist: The Heavy Title: Hurt & The Merciless (Bad Son Recording Company) You might like if you enjoy: Vintage Trouble Tell me more: Thriving on heavy funk grooves and garage band rock ‘n’ roll, the Heavy’s “Hurt & The Merciless” provides one catchy track after another. Inthe-pocket rhythms, blasting horns, spirited vocals from Kelvin Swaby and rollicking arrangements fuel a dynamic album that is a blast from start to finish. While uptempo burners are the rule (just listen to the pumping “Since You Been Gone” and rocking “What Happened to the Love?”), the Heavy’s lovely Latin-flavored ballad “Nobody’s Hero” and the retro “Miss California” are welcome detours. Information: theheavy.co.uk.

a day-into-night affair and will have stadium-like seating. The Polo Grounds will open each day at 2 p.m. with sets to start after sunset. There will be no opening acts. Grandstands will border five rows of reserved floor seating, with standing room tickets available up front and near the stage. World-renowned chefs from 40 restaurants will be on hand. For an extra $225, attendees can choose an ``Outstanding in the Field’’ option featuring a four-course meal while they watch the concert, with two available dinner seating times per night. Overnight car, tent and RV camping will be available, and may be necessary for some as Coachella Valley hotel rooms are reportedly already filling up for the Desert Trip weekend. Car and tent camping will be available for $99, while RV camping is $950 for a 20-by-50-foot space, which comes with free showers, food and beverage vendors,

24-hour medical and security personnel, a fully stocked general store and internet cafe. Campers can also stay at Coachella’s Lake Eldorado, which features teepee style tents, for $1,600. The Oct. 7-9 and Oct. 14-16 concerts will feature The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, The Who and former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters, performing at the same venue where the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals are annually held. Dylan and The Rolling Stones are set to perform on the first night; McCartney and Young, with his brother Lukas’ band, Promise of the Real, on the second night; with Waters and The Who closing out the festival. The event has been dubbed ``Oldchella’’ by some because of the older demographic it is expected to attract. For more information, visit www.deserttrip.com.

CONLIN INP 1600268 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both of JOHN CONLIN aka JOHN D. CONLIN. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by DAVID LAZOVSKY in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that DAVID LAZOVSKY be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. By Desert Star Staff In an attempt to clarify his stance regarding potential default on national debt payments, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stated that, in the US, “you never have to default because you print the money.” Responding to questions over recent comments indicating that as president, he would renegotiate US national debt rather than pay creditors in full — which could spur a global financial shock — Trump said the notion that he would default on national debt is “crazy.” “People said I want to go and buy debt and default on debt, and I mean, these people are crazy. This is the United States government,” Trump told CNN on Monday “First of all, you never have to default because you print the money, I hate to tell you, OK?” Late last week, Trump said that as president, he would “borrow, knowing that if the economy crashed, you could make a deal.” He added, “And if the economy was good, it was good. So, therefore, you can’t lose.” Trump’s comments alarmed many, as defaulting on national debt would send reverberations throughout global finance given US debt is considered about the lowest-risk financial asset the world over. On Monday, Trump addressed his previous comments.

“I said if we can buy back government debt at a discount, in other words, if interest rates go up and we can buy bonds back at a discount — if we are liquid enough as a country, we should do that,” Trump said. “In other words, we can buy back debt at a discount.” Trump, the billionaire real estate magnate, called himself the “king of debt,” going on to reference his purchase of discounted mortgages during the housing-bubble collapse that trigger the 2008 recession. However, a nation is different from a business, he said. “In business (debt buyback) happens all the time. I bought mortgages back when the market went bad, I bought mortgages back at tremendous discounts, and I love doing that,” he said. “There’s nothing like it actually, it gives me a great thrill. But in the United States with bonds, that won’t happen because you know in theory the market doesn’t go down so that you default on debt, and that’s what happens.” Trump has also made news of late for suggesting that he would like to see a boost in minimum wage protections and less tax decreases for top income recipients in the US than his previous tax plans had indicated. On Sunday, Trump gave somewhat contradicting statements on wage hikes in

On ABC’s This Week, Trump said that “people have to get more” in terms of wages, but his comments centered around the vague pledge to “bring companies back into this country.” “But my real minimum wage is going to be -- I’m going to bring companies back into this country and they’re going to make a lot more than the $15 even,” Trump said. “They’re going to make a lot more than that. That’s what I want to do.” Later on Sunday, on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump said that states should decide on their own minimum wages, and that the federal government should not set a wage floor.

“I would like to see an increase of some magnitude,” he said. “But I’d rather leave it to the states. Let the states decide. Because don’t forget, the states have to compete with each other.” In both Sunday interviews, Trump expressed a belief that, after negotiations with Congress, the wealthy in America may have to pay more in taxes that is proposed in his own tax plan. He did not express a desire to alter his tax plans for top income recipients. In fact, on Monday during an interview with Fox Business Network, Trump said his proposal is centered on “massive tax decreases.”

Anything but “Square”

By Desert Star Staff TORRANCE, Calif., -Honda is bringing to life the all-new 2016 Civic Coupe in a new integrated advertising campaign that highlights the vehicle’s role as the most stylish, refined, dynamic and connected car in its class. The multi-platform campaign

launching today includes TV, print and digital executions that highlight the vehicle’s innovative new styling and advanced features while playfully communicating how the 2016 Honda Civic Coupe challenges the way people perceive the world around them. In “Square,” (https://youtu.

be/ZJazux_BxQk) the Civic Coupe’s new 30-second TV spot, a world is depicted that is dominated by dull square forms, from square people and square dogs to square cars, even the ad itself is shown in a square format. This “square” world is completely disrupted when the all-new

Civic Coupe arrives, flaunting a new sleek design and sporty curves. When airing on TV and in pre-roll formats, the commercial will be confined into a square format, which will then expand into full frame as the Civic Coupe arrives. “The bold styling and dynamic performance of the allnew Honda Civic Coupe have reset customer expectations for the compact car experience,” said Susie Rossick, Assistant Vice President of Marketing at American Honda. “Our new campaign visually represents how the Civic Coupe is breaking the rules of conformity.” “Square” will debut across high profile primetime, sports (NHL and NBA), cable and online video properties. Print executions will illustrate that ‘Curves are Better’ in publications including Car and Driver, Road & Track, Autoweek, Motor Trend and Automobile. On the digital front, crossplatform and high-impact

By Desert Star Staff During Military Appreciation Month, Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation (Fallen Patriots) honors the heroic sacrifices that soldiers, surviving spouses and their children have endured and overcome. This awareness month was created to ensure the nation was given the opportunity to publically demonstrate their appreciation for the sacrifices and successes made by our service members, past and present. Fallen Patriots Day: Officially proclaimed by mayors and governors throughout the nation, May 13th is recognized as Fallen Patriots Day. This special day honors the bravery of surviving children while also creating awareness for Fallen Patriots’ mission. In 2014, mayors and governors across the country, including military-friendly Jacksonville, Washington DC, Charlotte, Columbus, Dallas, and Birmingham, as well as

the state of Florida, officially proclaimed this holiday. On Friday PepsiCo will help celebrate Fallen Patriots Day in Jacksonville through their Rolling Remembrance campaign, a 5000-mile relay across the country that will begin in Seattle and end in White Plains, NY on May 24th. Using normal business routes, U.S. Military Veteran PepsiCo drivers will pass off a flag to each other at 31 different relay points. “PepsiCo’s partnership with Children of Fallen Patriots directly benefits military children of servicemen and women who have sacrificed everything for our country. Rolling Remembrance generates tremendous support and the awareness its brings about across the country, helps us provide college scholarships and educational assistance to more of the estimated 20,000 children who have lost an active duty parent in the past 35 years,” explained Kendra E. Davenport, President of Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation. “We’re very grateful to PepsiCo for their commitment to military families. They do more than just donate - they inspire people to get involved.” Honoring the Fallen: Memorial Day is a time when our nation reflects on the ultimate sacrifice that so

advertising units will be featured across select partners, such as Google, Amazon and Pandora. Targeted digital and search support will continue across various platforms, rolling out engaging programs in support of the all-new Civic Coupe throughout the campaign to maintain awareness. The social media execution continues Honda’s tradition of pushing the status-quo boundary by building the firstever crowd sourced stunt track to tout the performance of the all-new Civic Coupe with the #CivicDreamTrack. Honda is leveraging Facebook and Twitter, asking fans for ideas on how to create the ultimate “Dream Track”. If a fan’s suggestion gets used in the making of the stunt track, that fan will get a special social media shout-out from Honda. A video of the #CivicDreamTrack will debut across Honda social channels in mid-June. Sneak peeks will also be featured on Honda’s Snapchat.
