By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Plays about Hollywood are easy marks for satire and spoofs due to our human frailty, ambition and a little larceny that resides in all our hearts. Besides, we’ve
all seen every conceivable plot and twist over the last hundred years. After all, there are only 36 plotlines according to Shakespeare scholars; making everything else merely variations. The Desert Rose Theatre, of Cathedral City, the only theatrical venue serving the LBGTQ community, is
KMIR News Staff Indio, CA - He’s a heavy hitter in the ring, but Randy Caballero is bringing the heat when the gloves come off. Local boxer Randy Caballero has quite the resume. From being the former IBF Bantamweight Champion of the World to now the NABF Super Bantamweight title holder. But his resume extends outside of the ring as he is in his third year of being a local business owner. Caballero is known in the Coachella Valley for being a world champion. But like anyone who does anything in life, sometimes it’s nice to unplug. Caballero opened a barbershop man cave in Indio to not only have an outlet for himself but for locals looking for the same thing,
“My vision was to make a place where the guys can just get away. In this shopping center you’ve got a nails salon, women’s clothing store, you have all this stuff for women. When a guy goes with their wife and is sitting in their car waiting, they can come in here, hang out get their haircut play pool, you know watch TV. It’s just a place to hang out like a man cave. And that was my envision here in this barbershop. And you know it’s something totally different than the rest of them.” Although Caballero doesn’t cut hair, clients always enjoy his presence. “People come in here like where’s Randy, where’s Randy? You know I try to come out here, hang out
presenting a slick, snappy, and outrageously funny production written by Michael McKeever, that bills itself as a dark comedy spoof/satire entitled “Clark Gable Slept Here”, a Hollywood Fable directed by Resident Director and theatre co-Founder Jim Strait. The play’s message isn’t in the same league with,
say, discovering radium, or presenting a plan to end world hunger. It’s just about a drug theft gone hilariously awry that involves: The beautiful, self-obsessed, Hollywood actress Morgan Wright (Yo Younger), her ambitious and crass personal manager Hilly Hilliard (Michael Pacas), the General Manager of
Hollywood’s famous watering hole and hotel The Chateau Marmont (Winston Gieseke), Estella, a duplicitous, hotel room maid (Melanie Blue), who harbors a secret (every satire and spoof has to have a character who does this), and Travis (John Fryer), who is the Continues on Page 2

Cathedral City to Vote on Sanctuary City Status
KMIR Angela Monroe, Anchor Cathedral City, CA -It’s been a hot topic across the country so-called sanctuary cities. A city in the Coachella Valley may be joining the list of cities across america. The city of Cathedral City is moving towards becoming a sanctuary city. This would make them
the first official sanctuary city in the valley. “The overreach of the Federal Government is really encroaching on our local communities and it’s barbaric, inhumane and that’s not who we are as Americans,” said Cathedral City resident, Ellen O’Rourke. A sanctuary city
means that a city basically doesn’t cooperate with the federal government over immigration law. Residents say the fear of deportation is rising. “It was a complete intimidation act from our own government, and no human being should be treated like that, and that’s
what I came to city council to say,” said Palm Desert resident, Edward Holzhauer. Earlier this year, Cathedral City declared themselves an inclusive city, but decided to start the process to taking that further to sanctuary city. “As the new administration has taken over, and the federal government, as executive orders have come out with respect to immigration and immigrants in this country, and the fact that Cathedral City is over 60 percent Hispanic, we clearly have a number of undocumented immigrants living in the city, we’re very concerned about supporting our residents,” said Cathedral City Councilman, Shelley Kaplan. A bold move, after the government threatened to cut off funding to sanctuary cities. “Failure to remedy violations could result in defaulting grants, termination
of grants, and disbarment or ineligibility for future grants,” said Attorney General Jeff Sessions last month. A court ruling did block that for now. The city council for Cathedral City is moving forward anyways. “That should send a very big message to anyone that lives in Cathedral City that their city council and police department really do care about their safety and do care about who it is and who they are, and not about their legal status,” said Karen Borja with Inland Congregations United for Change. Other valley cities have discussed sanctuary city status, but Cathedral City would be the first one. They will vote on that, in two weeks. Source:KMIR

“Clark Gable Slept Here”. It’s a fun romp and a hoot of a satire and spoof about ‘noir Hollywood’ in the 40’s. The production is performed without an intermission (approximately 90 minutes) and runs through May 28, 2017. For reservations and ticket information call the box office at 760-202-3000.

Women Go Topless in New York to Celebrate Equal Rights By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK,- The summer of 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of the landmark 1992 court decision establishing that women have the same right as men to go bare-chested in public places throughout New York State. Celebrating this milestone with a summer-long series of outdoor events is the Outdoor Co-ed Topless Pulp Fiction Appreciation Society (ToplessPulp.com), a book club founded in the summer of 2011 to give women in New York an opportunity to safely exercise their right to go topless in city parks, plazas, and other public spaces. The group’s events in past years have included boating on Central Park Lake, book

Last summer, the group produced an acclaimed all-female, fully nude outdoor production of The Tempest in Central Park to commemorate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. (Full nudity is permitted outdoors in New York as part of the performance of a play or other artistic exhibition. Toplessness is permitted at any time.) The group’s activities have been covered by media throughout the world, including the New York Times, the Sunday Times of London, Cosmopolitan, Jezebel, and Salon. The events planned for this summer (all of which are free of charge) include meet-ups in
many of the city’s most popular outdoor spaces, and range from adventurous to simply relaxing: a gathering of 10-20 women reading on the grass in the park, as unconcerned about baring their breasts under the sun as
the countless topless men in the park are about baring theirs. “A woman’s chest is no more inherently sexual than a man’s,” said the group’s co-founder, Alethea Andrews. “Eighty years ago, men weren’t allowed to
take their shirts off in public, and today that seems ridiculous. Years from now, it will seem just as ridiculous that we ever restricted women in this way. Once people get used to the sight, it’s really no big deal.”
“Die-In” Puts Focus on Trumpcare Fallout in Granite State
By Desert Star Staff CONCORD, N.H. – Opponents of the latest version of “Trumpcare” staged what they referred to as a “die-in” on Wednesday outside the office of Gov. Chris Sununu. The protest coincided with the governor’s scheduled meeting with U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price. Linda Rhodes, co-founder of the group Indivisible New Hampshire, says the goal of several dozen protesters lying on the floor was to call attention to the lethal effects they believe the latest version of the American Health Care Act could have, especially in the Granite State. “The cut to Medicaid and Medicare, the cutting funding for Planned Parenthood - it could have devastating effects on New Hampshire’s good work to try to help the opioid crisis here,” she explains. While President Donald Trump has said on numerous occasions that the measure to repeal and replace Obamacare will not strip health insurance from people with pre-existing conditions, Rhodes says “Trumpcare 2.0” jeopardizes coverage for tens of thousands in New Hampshire who get their health insurance with the help of Affordable Care Act subsidies. Rhodes says a big reason for the die-in was to call on Gov. Sununu to oppose Trumpcare - especially if he wants to effectively address the opioid drug epidemic - and for him to relay that message to Secretary Price. “He’s having meetings with people impacted by the opioid crisis; at least Gov. Sununu understands that that’s an issue,” she says. “But he threw his hat in the ring with people who are trying
to cut 24 million people off of their health insurance.” Rhodes says they would have staged the die-in as Price and Sununu met, but the location of that meeting wasn’t shared with the public. She says if the Affordable Care Act is repealed, the average cost to Medicare enrollees is estimated to be more than $1,000 a month.

All-Suite Viking Ra Will Begin Sailing New Nile River Cruisetour in Spring 2018 By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, -Viking River Cruises (www. vikingrivercruises.com) today announced details of the newest addition to its river fleet, Viking Ra™. Recently acquired, the vessel has been stripped down to the steel to undergo a complete renovation that will reflect Viking’s awardwinning Scandinavian design. Tailored to an intimate sailing experience for just 48 guests, Viking Ra will sail the Nile River on a new Egypt cruisetour, Pharaohs & Pyramids, that will launch in March 2018. “Egypt is one of the most intriguing countries in the world, and it remains a top destination for many of our guests,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises. “For two decades, we have led the industry in river cruising with our innovative ship design and itineraries that bring our guests closer to the cultures of the world. We are committed to Egypt, and with the introduction of Viking Ra, we look forward to providing our award-winning service to our guests on the Nile – and to their experiencing this culturally
rich region in the Viking way.” During the 12-day, Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary, guests will experience Egypt’s cultural treasures in seven destinations. The cruisetour begins with a three-night stay at a first-class hotel in Cairo, where guests can visit iconic sites such as the Great Pyramids of Giza, the new Grand Egyptian Museum and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. Guests will then fly to Luxor, where they will visit the Temples of Luxor and Karnak before boarding Viking Ra for a 8-day roundtrip cruise on the Nile River to Aswan, featuring Privileged Access to the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens and excursions to the Temple of Khnum in Esna, the Dendera Temple complex in Qena, and a visit to a colorful Nubian village where guests can experience a traditional elementary school. Finally, the journey concludes with a flight back to Cairo for a final night in the historic city. Viking Ra Designed for Destination Cruising The newly rebuilt, allsuite Viking Ra will boast 24 staterooms that will
exclusively accommodate 48 Viking guests for an intimate cruising experience. Named in honor the Egyptian sun god Ra, Viking Ra’s name also pays homage to the great Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl and his papyrus-reed boats Ra and Ra II. Designed by experienced nautical architects and engineers,
including the same interior design team responsible for the award-winning fleet of Viking Longships®, Viking Ra will be a state-of-the art ship with the clean, elegant Scandinavian design for which Viking is known blended with local influences like traditional geometric Arabic patterns and terrazzo floors. Viking Ra will help guests immerse themselves in local surroundings and will feature: All Suite Staterooms: The ship features three suite stateroom categories, each of 291 sq. ft., including 20 Veranda Suites with a full-size veranda in the living room and a French balcony in the bedroom. All staterooms include premium amenities such as a hotelstyle bed, luxury linens, sofa, private bathroom with shower, air conditioning and flat-screen TVs. Pool and Two Jacuzzis: In addition to two Jacuzzis, the ship features a pool at the back of the ship, allowing guests to swim surrounded by their destination. A sanctuary from the sun is provided by sculptural “sail-shades” inspired by local dhow ships
and intricate mashrabiyainfluenced screens surrounding the Pool and Sun Deck. Spa: Specifically designed for Viking Ra, guests can relax in The Spa offering massage services and a variety of treatments. Onboard Dining, Bar and Lounge: Dine in The Restaurant, which serves three full meals and a selection of regional and international fare, then head to the clinker-built bar to share a cocktail with friends. During the day, guests can enjoy The Lounge to relax, take in the views through floor-to-ceiling glass doors or hear an informative discussion on the next destination. Enriching Entertainment: Connecting guests to their destinations through authentic experiences is central to Viking’s “thinking person’s cruise.” Instead of casinos and water slides, guests are offered Viking’s Culture Curriculum®, which includes a Nubian evening event on board and a local experience riding a camel. Additionally, Viking’s expert Egyptologist leads all excursions, sharing the archaeological and historical significance of the sites.
Federal Methane Rule Survives Challenge By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. – The U.S. Senate on Wednesday narrowly rejected an attempt to overturn a rule meant to stop the release of billions of cubic feet of natural gas into the environment. Three Republicans joined all 46 Senate Democrats and two independents in rejecting the resolution to throw out the Bureau of Land Management rule. According to environmentalists, nearly 110 billion cubic feet of gas, valued at $330 million, is

released each year through leaks, venting and flaring on federal and tribal lands. Dan Grossman, Rocky Mountain regional director of the Environmental Defense Fund, calls the vote a major victory. “The oil and gas industry had lobbied hard to roll back these common-sense protections, and so today is a victory for the environment but it’s also a victory for the American taxpayer,” he says. Methane, the main ingredient of natural gas, is a potent greenhouse gas,
80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as an agent of climate change. Last month, EPA Administrator, Scott Pruitt, announced that he will reconsider an Obama-era rule meant to curb methane emissions from all new sources. But Grossman points out that the rule for wells on federal lands also applies to existing wells. “That’s the direction that Pennsylvania appears to be headed,” he adds. “It’s the path that Colorado started in 2014, that California continued May 12, 2017
recently. So I think the momentum toward addressing both new and existing sources is continuing today.” Although Gov. Tom Wolf has promised to impose regulations on existing gas infrastructure, draft rules from Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection, released earlier this year, only would apply to new facilities. While gas leaks are found throughout naturalgas infrastructure, including pipelines, Grossman says the BLM rules only apply to wellheads and
compressor stations. “Fugitive emissions from the wellhead are probably the leading source of methane emissions in the oil and gas sector, so this is a great place to start,” he explains. Wednesday’s vote was the last opportunity for Congress to overturn the methane rule, but the Department of the Interior still could repeal that rule through the rulemaking process.

‘The Bodyguard’-- Music, Romance & Danger at the Pantages

Deborah Cox as Rachel Marron and Judson Mills as Frank Farmer in The Bodyguard. Photo by Joan Marcus. The new musical “The Bodyguard,” based on the Warner Bros. film of the same name, will be at the Hollywood Pantages for an all too brief three week run, ending May 21. In the film Whitney Houston was the singing star being stalked and in need of protection, provided by Kevin Costner, her bodyguard. In the theatrical musical version Grammy Awardnominated and multi platinum R&B/pop recording artist Deborah Cox takes over the
role of Rachel Marron who is deeply concerned for her safety after a mysterious intruder is able to sneak into her dressing room and steal one of her shimmering gowns. Even though she has security it is decided that someone with even more experience needs to be called in. At this point former secret service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer ( Judson Mills) is hired to keep the endangered superstar out of harm’s way. It’s definitely not love at first
sight, but things heat up considerably as time goes by. Farmer is very professional, but Rachel wants to feel she is in total control. Her young son Fletcher (Kevelin B. Jones III) however takes to him right away. Her sister Nicki (Jasmin Richardson) also finds the bodyguard attractive and personable. Danger is a key element in the storyline, but there is also plenty of humor, warmth and romance throughout. For example, Rachel’s young son Fletcher is a delight who can belt out a song and dance with assurance. (Young Kevelin alternates in the role with Douglas Baldeo.) One of the most charming scenes in the show occurs when Rachel and her bodyguard go out on a ‘sort of a date’ to a karaoke hangout. Cleverly she tricks him to get up and sing. The bodyguard does sing, sort of, and his solo is endearing and quite funny.
The real musical numbers belong to the ladies. And the show is filled with one hit after another. Rachel and her sister Nicki are singer-songwriters, but Nicki hides her singing talents away, performing usually unnoticed in a small club. Frank Farmer comes one night and is impressed. You’ll be impressed as well by her vocal styling. Of course the iconic song ”I Will Always Love You” is sung by Deborah Cox as Rachel. Other hits include: “Greatest Love of All,” “I’m Every Woman,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” “One Moment in Time,” “Run to You,” “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” and “Savin’ All My Love.” The stalker, constantly lurking in the shadows throughout, is menacingly portrayed by Jorge Paniagua. The book for the show is by Alexander Dinelaris based on the screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan. The imaginative set and costume
designs are by Tim Hatley with choreography by Karen Bruce. Thea Sharrock directed. “The Bodyguard,” at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre, 6233 Hollywood Blvd. (just east of Vine St.) ends May 21. Tickets are available at www. HollywoodPantages.com or www.Ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-982-2787. Tickets can also be purchased at the theatre’s box office. Note: Deborah Cox is not scheduled to perform at the matinees. New 2017-2018 Season Packages for the Pantages are available now. The list of shows includes: Disney’s “Aladdin,” “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Love Never Dies--The Phantom Returns,” “School of Rock-the Musical,” “The Color Purple,” “On Your Feet-The Emilio & Gloria Estefan Musical” and “Waitress.” To order or find out more go to HollywoodPantages. com or call 866-755-2929.

Decade of Denial: Paid Sick Days Act Languishes in NC By Desert Star Staff DURHAM, N.C. – For the past 10 years, various lawmakers have introduced legislation that would create a paid sick days policy for North Carolina workers. The Healthy Families and Workplaces Paid Sick Days Act has never seen a vote over the last decade in the State General Assembly, despite the fact that 1.6 million citizens do not have jobs offering this benefit. Jay Murrie owns Piedmont Wine Imports in Durham and voluntarily offers paid sick days to his employees. “When you put people into that sort of environment, they give a lot back to the organizations they work for,” he states. “I feel like paid sick leave is just part of a tapestry that any business should do for the people within it, in order to achieve a sustainability and profitability for the company.” Low-wage workers are specifically impacted by
the lack of paid sick days, since more than half of them earn less than $20,000 a year, meaning they are not able to miss a paycheck to take care of illness. Currently this year’s legislation (SB 556/H 544) has been referred to committee for consideration. Opponents of the legislation argue it creates a burden for employers. Ana Pardo, campaign coordinator for the Workers’ Rights Project at the North Carolina Justice Center, says there are a myriad of factors in not offering paid sick leave, aside from just financial. “If you make your workers come to work sick, you’re essentially putting them in a situation where they forfeit their wages to not come into work sick,” she points out. “A lot of people are going to choose to come in, and you don’t get what you need from those workers when they come in sick, and you expose the rest of your staff and your customer
For the 10th year, a bill is before the State Assembly that would create a paid sick leave policy for private employers in the state. (Claus Rebler/flickr.com) base to getting sick as well.” Murrie says aside from knowing he’s doing the right thing for his employees, he makes the money back that he spends on the benefit and then some by retaining employees and avoiding a high turnover rate.
“I think that what a lot of business owners don’t understand is that if you pay people a living wage, you give them basic necessary benefits, on a daily basis they create higher levels of profitability,” he states. Connecticut, California,
Massachusetts, Oregon and Vermont all have paid sick days laws. In North Carolina, the law would allow employees to accrue from 4 to 7 days of paid sick leave each year, depending on the size of their company.
Juvenile-Justice Fees Forcing Some CA Families Into Bankruptcy
Before Sacramento County repealed its fees, the average juvenile probation case could generate $5,640 in fees, according to a new report. (JDAI AZ) By Desert Star Staff BERKELEY, Calif. – A new report finds that some
California families are losing their homes and being driven into bankruptcy by the fees
counties charge when kids get arrested - fees that nonetheless generate little
to no profit for taxpayers. Researchers from the UC Berkeley School of Law found that more than 50 counties charge fees for detention, probation supervision, electronic monitoring, drug testing and even representation by a public defender. Co-author Stephanie Campos-Bui, a clinical supervising attorney with the Policy Advocacy Clinic at the UC Berkeley School of Law, says many kids who get into trouble come from struggling families, so the fees are counterproductive and cause even more family strife. “Many families can’t afford to pay even $50 a month, let alone $500 a month,” she says. “When these fees are assessed, they become a civil judgment against a family that is enforceable through wage garnishment and tax-rebate intercepts.” The report shows that San Diego, Orange, Kern and
Ventura counties charge the most in fees. But Sacramento County just voted a month ago to stop charging their fees altogether and forgave the debt that families there had accrued, some dating back to the 1970s. Bui says San Francisco County has never charged the fees. And Los Angeles, Butte, Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties all have re-evaluated their fees in the past year, citing fiscal reasons and a desire to improve a system that disproportionately harms families of color. “Santa Clara County ended their fees in January,” she adds. “They were spending over $450,000 in staff and resources and only collected $400,000. So, a net loss.” A bill currently before the state Legislature, Senate Bill 190, would ban collection of fees in the juvenile-justice system across the state.
Yogis, Mystics and Kirtan Music
Joshua Tree Sunset. Photo courtesy of Facebook By Jackie Devereaux (Joshua Tree, CA) – If you’re looking for or need a spiritual fix but don’t care for the traditional Judeo/ Christian religions, then you may find the vibrations at Shakti Fest to your liking in the high desert this weekend. More than six thousand people are expected to gather over the three-day festival to sing and dance with kirtan and Hindu music, attend master yoga sessions, discover alternative healing modalities, and sample delicious vegetarian foods from May 12-14 at the Institute of Mentalphysics. Yoga is everywhere in the United States. Most big box stores sell yoga mats, straps and blocks, and most gyms offer yoga class regularly. For
those who want to get their fix of yoga on, and off the mat, yoga retreats tend to be expensive in places like Costa Rica. However, Shakti Fest is a great alternative to that expensive option. “We are invincible, inexhaustible, inspirational... here is so much diversity in the human race, we can all recognize the absolute power of the people to do good,” says festival promoter Sridhar Silberfein on his website. “Coming together in a community of compassionate connection, we can send out the energies of healing and compassion across the globe. Never underestimate the power of love!” “From May 12-14, we combine these powerful energies in celebration of
the Divine Feminine. We stand together in honor of Mother Earth, nature, and family. Join the sangha
(spiritual community) at Shakti Fest this year and be part of a greater whole.” This year’s event features two pre-event intensive workshops with Saul David Raye on May 11 hosting the Divine Moon: Awakening & the Inner Path of Shakti; and Siva hosting an Ayurveda Medicine workshop. A postevent workshop called Festival Immersion with Govind Das and Radha where participants will learn from the gurus, saints, great masters and scriptures from the East takes place on May 16. Mayand new Ram Dass interview with Silberfein, promoter of both the spring Shakti Fest and fall Bhakti Fest held Sept. 6-11 with Deepak Chopra and Krishna Das as headliners.
This year’s musical lineup includes: Jai Uttal, Saul David Raye, Shiva Rea, Jaya Lakshmi and Ananda, Mas Vidal, Donna De Lory, Jeffery Armstrong, Sheela Bringi, Govind Das and Radha, Fanna-Fi-Allah, Mark Whitwell, Viyakasi Das, Singun Kaur, Prajna Viera, Uzo Nwanka, and many more. Tickets are $375 for the five-day festival and available online or at the festival site. Go to www.bhaktifest.com for tickets and festival schedule. There are still some campsites still available in the men’s area with full showers and toilets, and individual beds with complete bedding available from $150 from Thursday to Monday. Free camping is available for Wednesday and Thursday when registered for the full weekend festival.
