By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association America’s most famous and favorite humorist of the late 19th century and early 20th century was renaissance man Samuel L. Clemens, who authored his own reallife adventures, stories, essays, and novels under the pen name of Mark Twain. He was born in 1835, the year of the arrival of the celestial body known as “Halley’s Comet”; which only makes an appearance in American skies every 75 years. He died 75 years later when Halley’s Comet returned in 1910. What Mark Twain

Society west of the Hudson River of New York was considered to be too brash, brawny and adventurous for snobbish East Coast elites. Ohio was considered to be end of civilized America with St. Louis, Missouri, the gateway to the Pacific. America has come a long way since it lawless days of the wild-west. Victoria Mature,-Victor Mature’s Daughter, Alan K. Rode-Producer and Host and Foster Hirsch-Film Noir author, professor and part of the 2019 Film Noir. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Arthur Lyons Film Noir in Palm Springs celebrated its 20th anniversary on Thursday night with cake and Champagne. The people involved with this festival almost since the beginning was Alan K. Rode along with Foster Hirsch. The new celebrity this year was none other than Victoria Mature, the beautiful daughter of film great Victor Mature. Most of the actors in these Noir films are now long gone. Their children bring a sense of the OLD Hollywood to these films. Many of these movies have had to be restored to be shown on the big screen. So
many have been lost forever, so the restoration of these old films is so important in the history of movies. Stars back then are no longer given credit for their excellent acting ability. The younger generation finally gets to see what made Hollywood and the film so incredible. These Noir films were called B movies because they were low budget and dealt with the underground of gangsters, their Molls, guns, and crimes of that dark period. These films made actors STARS that went on to bigger and better roles in the Hollywood Ideas, at the time. Blockbuster films were the

norm back then. The films shown this year are some many have seen on their TV sets but not on the big screen. “The Night of the Hunter” starring Robert Mitchum is terrifying in a personal sense, on the big screen, and not the blood and guts type of scary you see today. Many are still on 35mm film and require special equipment to show them now. The Film Noir Foundation works to preserve these precious films. Other celebrity guests included Joanna Lancaster, Daughter of the iconic actor, Burt Lancaster, who came for the showing of her fathers 9148 film, “ All My Sons.” The
granddaughter of Dashiell Hammett, Julie Rivett, is an advocate for her Grandfathers Works and came for the 1948 film, “The Glass Key.” Soap Opera star, Jan Shepard, came for a hugely anticipated digitally restored film, “King Creole,” with Elvis Presley, which played on Saturday night. Saturday also included, “Odds Against Tomorrow,” stars another famous face, Harry Belafonte, who’s daughter Shari Belafonte, has local connections. Local Kathy Garver also attended. Movies shown were, “Somewhere in the Night.” starring John Hodiak, “The Scarlet Hour”, “5 Fingers”
starring James Mason, “Trapped” with Lloyd Bridges, “Calcutta” starring Alan Ladd and William Bendix, “ShakeDown” starring Howard Duff, and one my favorites showing on Mothers Day, “Mildred Pierce” with Joan Crawford and Ann Blyth. These Dozen films are the only place to be able to see these thrilling iconic movies on the big screen. Some are available on DVD/Blu-ray, but most are still just shown at Noir festivals. We are lucky to have a FILM NOIR FESTIVAL in our Valley that explains why that period is called the “Golden Age of Hollywood.”

perform tasks that currently require humans to complete. Learning to work with Robotics is the area of education needed for future jobs growth. Graduates today must incorporate robotics training into their plan for their futures. Robots are becoming smarter than people and make fewer mistakes, and they don’t get bored! Most companies are moving toward this to cut costs. Adapting to this change is going to require us to understand how man-machine partnerships are going to evolve. Our goals must be to use our high-level cognitive ability to anticipate what parts of our work will be fully automated and what parts of our work will be so hard for machines to do that manmachine partnership is the most practical approach. With that in mind, we can work on adapting our skills to become better than our peers at leveraging man-machine partnerships. Estimates of how many jobs all together that the robots will wipe out, and when, vary wildly. Economists say somewhere between 9% and 47% of workers in the West could lose jobs to automation over the next two or so decades. Some of the first jobs to be replaced will be those in middle management unless the employee is working along with the Robot. Some of the tasks that will be placed may surprise you. The list includes Pharmacist, Lawyers
commentators- done 100% by robots. Financial writers will also find their days numbered. Robo-accounting is in its infancy, but it is fantastic at dealing with accounts payable and receivable, inventory control, auditing and several other accounting functions that humans used to be needed to do. Becoming a doctor was once the highest paid occupation. Robots make amazing doctors, diagnosticians, and surgeons. IBM’s Watson is teaming up with a dozen US hospitals to offer advice on the best treatments for a range of cancers and helping to spot early-stage skin cancers. Ultra-precise robo-surgeons are used now for everything from knee replacement surgery to vision correction. This trend is continuing at an incredible pace. I’m not sure how robodoc’s bedside manner will be,
1. Establish reasonable time limits to protect participation by all. Most associations allow 2 or 3 minutes per speaker. Have a timekeeper and consider giving members a “30 second warning” to help them. 2. Do not interrupt, argue with, or respond to the speakers during their time. 3. Listen to the speakers and take notes. Show attentiveness to their concerns – you just might learn something new. 4. Do not record open forum comments in the meeting minutes – comments are not actions. 5. Some speakers may disagree with the board or criticize. Deal with it -- you are in a position of service, and they might sometimes be right! 6. After open forum concludes, the chair should inquire if any item from open forum should be referred to a committee or management. If an answer to a question is immediately available, then the answer should be provided – after open forum. 7. Be consistent. The Chair should not
allow comments from the floor outside of open forum and should bar directors from interrupting open forum speakers. 8. Consider reopening open forum on issues perceived to be of major importance to the community, or where the board desires member input. 9. Do not discuss subjects raised in open forum unless they are already on the agenda. In open forum, members can say what they want, but unless the item is an emergency, it can’t be discussed by the board until it is placed on a posted agenda. 10. Adopt written board meeting rules, informing attendees how meetings are run and establishing decorum standards.
Open Forum - Drudge or Jewel? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. The “Open Meeting Act” (Civil Code Sections 4900-4955), requires at Section 4925(b) that all membership meetings and board meetings have a time set aside for members to speak. This time is often called “open forum.” In open forum, a member can speak on topics on or off the agenda. Some associations avoid open forum and others have unrestricted open forum, but both extremes are unhealthy. The time for homeowners to contribute to the meeting is not during deliberations – that is the board’s role – but during open forum. Open forum is an important element of a healthy association. If members have a fair opportunity to address an attentive board, they will have a more positive view of their association, and directors will be better connected with the community they serve. Consider these guidelines: Directors:

and Paralegals, Drivers, Astronauts, Store Clerks, Soldiers, Rescuers, Baby Sitters, Warehouse workers, Reporters, Sports Writers, Journalists, Authors and Announcers, and Commodity Salespeople. All of these jobs have required much training in the past, but are easily programmable. Whenever the job requires danger, Robotics will be used to replace those of a rescuer or soldier, just as we witness today, how a robot is used to remove a bomb or a dangerous person. Writing is difficult even for the best of authors, but not report writing. Machines can be taught to read data, pattern match images or video, or analyze almost any kind of research materials and create a very readable (or announce-able) writing. Text-to-speech systems are evolving so quickly and sound very realistic. Before long, we will listen to play-by-play

To association members: 1. Open forum is for members, not tenants or other non-owners. Members desiring to convey information or opinions to the board should personally attend. 2. Be organized. Two or three minutes is short. To get your point across, make sure you focus on your point and not
but you could program a “Be warm and kind” algorithm, and the robo-doc would treat you that way. If and when robots start eliminating whole classes of employment, things could become stressful. Most people like to work and be paid for it. Most of us derive self-worth, satisfaction, and dignity through our paid labors, even if the actual job may be routine. We need our work, to be happy and healthy and we need jobs to pay for our dreams. As Socrates said, “the only thing constant is change”… and we must embrace change. everything you can think of. 3. Address issues the board can handle, and don’t use your time to talk about global warming or high taxes. 4. Don’t play the interrogator and bring a list of questions which you demand must be immediately answered. Open forum is not a debating time or a time to cross-examine your neighbors serving as directors. 5. The Golden Rule also applies to open forum. Unless you want directors yelling, insulting, or otherwise abusing you, then don’t do it yourself. 6. Outside of open forum, just listen, don’t interject. If you truly want to deliberate agenda topics, run for the board! Kelly G. Is an Electric Car Right for You?
By Desert Star Staff As the popularity and availability of electric vehicles (EV) continues to grow in the U.S., a new survey suggests that many consumers still have a lot to learn about the technology. For example, when asked to choose an acceptable amount of time it should take to charge an EV, the most common answer (28 percent) was ‘‘I don’t know” followed by “30 minutes” (25 percent). The survey was commissioned by MINI USA from market research and business intelligence firm Engine International, Inc. in advance of the early 2020 U.S. launch of the MINI Cooper S E electric vehicle. “What we learned from the survey is that the typical consumer might not be aware of the many benefits of
electric mobility,” says Andrew Cutler, head of corporate communications, MINI USA. “Helping consumers get a better understanding of EV can help them make smarter, more informed decisions around their next vehicle purchase.” For example, 74 percent of consumers surveyed didn’t know where their nearest EV charging station was located, but charging your EV is easier and more accessible than you might think. A whopping 80 percent of EV owners charge their vehicle right at home. Plus, public charging stations are easy to find online through companies like ChargePoint and EVgo, and most available charging stations are visible in the navigation system of the car. On the other end of the spectrum, 63 percent of those
surveyed said they plan to use their EV as a commuting or city car, which is good news for motorists, as experts point out that EVs, which are both fuel efficient and fun to drive, are ideal for everyday commuting and urban driving. Because batteries provide
a low center of gravity, electric motors provide fast, powerful acceleration. Thanks to Federal Tax Credits lowering the upfront cost of qualified EVs, going electric is not just stylish and good for the planet, it may make financial sense, too.
“A majority of consumers we surveyed believe that EVs are for early adopters, but, given the many benefits of the technology, it could make a good choice for just about any household today,” says Cutler. StatePoint
As Teen Vaping Spreads, WA Doctor Says Speak to Kids Early By Desert Star Staff With the number of teenagers who use e-cigarettes rising, what can parents do to stop the trend? According to the 2018 Washington State Healthy Youth Survey, 30% of 12th graders in the state used vaping products, up from 20% in 2016. Dr. Susanna Block, a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente, says young people sometimes don’t know that vape pens, e-cigarettes and products such as Juul are the same
thing and have health effects similar to smoking, especially for developing brains. Block suggests parents talk to their children in late middle school or early high school about this. “We can give them accurate information before they’re getting all their information from their friends, and since we know two-thirds of high school students didn’t realize e-cigarettes contained nicotine, I think it’s very easy to have misinformation spread,” she states. The Healthy Youth Survey
found one in 10 eighth graders tried e-cigarettes in 2018. Block says there are some physical signs parents can look for to see if their children are vaping, such as acne around the mouth, nosebleeds, coughing and even recurring pneumonia. She also says parents should be on the lookout for the sweet-flavored smells of some vape pens or unfamiliar electronics used for battery charging. E-cigarette cartridges can contain as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes and
By Desert Star Staff Chances are high that you know someone with COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It’s the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S., and more than 16 million Americans have been diagnosed with it. But according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), millions more people have COPD and don’t realize it. Could you or someone you know be among them? Here are some clues: COPD typically comes on slowly. You may start experiencing shortness of breath while doing everyday activities, and though it’s easy to think of this as just a part of “getting older,” often it’s not. Shortness of breath is a common—and potentially dangerous—symptom of COPD, so see a health professional as soon as you can. And watch for other symptoms—ongoing coughing; wheezing; and excessive production of sputum, a
mixture of saliva and mucus. COPD can progress quickly and make it increasingly difficult to breathe. Often by the time people see a health professional, their lungs’ ability to work properly has been significantly impaired, so don’t delay. Without treatment, COPD can prevent you from doing basic activities, such as walking and dressing. COPD: Why me? While COPD takes a devastating toll across many populations and regions, researchers now know that certain people are at increased risk of developing the disease, including those who smoke or have smoked cigarettes. About 75 percent of COPD cases are caused by smoking, but people who have never smoked can also develop COPD, and scientists are continuously working to understand why. Long-term exposure to secondhand smoke and other lung irritants such as air pollution, chemical
fumes and dusts from the environment or workplace can put you at risk. If you have a rare genetic condition known as alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, your risk rises. Race, sex and where you live can be influencers, as well. In the past, COPD often had been labeled a man’s disease. Yet, women are 30 percent more likely than men to have COPD. And while the vast majority of people diagnosed are white, COPD affects some other ethnic groups disproportionally. For example, COPD is more common among multiracial or American Indian/Alaska Native adults, but less common among Asian, African American and Hispanic populations. Variances can be found geographically, too. COPD is twice as common in rural areas than in urban parts of the country. Many people with COPD can be found in southeastern parts of the U.S., such as Kentucky and Virginia,

are dangerous if ingested. Block says these products are geared to appeal to middle and high school students, with interesting flavors and names and funny packaging that often make it hard to tell what they contain. “One thing that we do know is that these e-cigarettes are a gateway to using traditional cigarettes,” she points out. “So, this is really a product that is designed to addict an entire new generation to tobacco.” Block says the marketing for e-cigarettes
gives parents a chance to teach their children to be smart consumers. On the positive end, Block applauds this year’s passage of a bill in Washington state to raise the sale age for tobacco and vape products to 21 starting in 2020. Lawmakers Consider Staffing of School Nurses, Counselors
House Bill 1401 would require Pennsylvania public schools to have one school nurse for every 750 students. (ronnarong/Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff A bill introduced in the General Assembly would bring more nurses into Pennsylvania public schools. The legislation would cut the maximum ratio of students to school nurses in half and establish
minimum staffing requirements for other professionals who work with students. Current law requires schools to have one nurse for every 1,500 students and sets no minimum for school psychologists, social workers
and school counselors. Judy Morgitan, a school nurse and former president of the Pennsylvania State Education Association’s Department of Pupil Services, said the bills could help schools better serve the academic
needs of their students. “School nurses are key in getting them the services that they need so they can get in that classroom and become the students that they’re able to become,” Morgitan said. House Bill 1401 would require one school nurse for every 750 students, one school psychologist for every 500, and a school counselor and social worker for every 250 students. The bill is now in the House Education Committee. Morgitan, who served on Gov. Tom Wolf’s School Safety Task Force last year, pointed out student-services professionals are critical for helping kids cope with emotional stresses, including the “active shooter drills” now common in many schools. “It’s a heightened sense of insecurity and worry for the students,” Morgitan said. “So, I don’t know how much education goes on right before, during and after that drill, but it really is an impact for them.” Increasing the number of school counselors and
mental health professionals was among the School Safety Task Force recommendations. Morgitan added the shortage of school nurses, psychologists and counselors puts extra burdens on teachers and contributes to teacher burnout. “We hear time and time again, from all of our colleagues and all of our partners in the school health environment and the school community, that yes, we need more school nurses,” Morgitan said. In addition to setting minimum ratios for pupilservices professionals, the legislation also calls for certification of school social workers. Statewide Effort Improves Care of Opioid-Exposed Babies A statewide effort to improve the care of innocent victims of Ohio’s opioid epidemic is showing positive results. The Ohio Perinatal Quality Collaborative is aiming for better birth outcomes and fewer preterm births – Ohio’s leading cause of infant mortality. More than 50 neonatal intensive care units monitored over 9,600 opioid-exposed babies for a five-year period in a project on neonatal abstinence syndrome or NAS. Dr. Carole Lannon, a pediatrician at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, says the team focused on compassionate withdrawal treatment and letting the infants spend more time with the mothers. “By providing this compassionate care, supporting the mothers and the great work of the clinical teams at the hospitals, we were able to reduce both the length of treatment and
length of stay by about two days each,” she explains. Lannon says with this approach, fewer babies needed medications for their opioid withdrawal over the five-year project. It’s estimated that in 2015, one child was born every 25 minutes with neonatal abstinence syndrome, and Lannon says that number is steadily increasing. Lannon explains babies born with NAS experience both emotional and physical symptoms. “These infants can be more irritable, they can be more difficult to console,” she points out. “You can see trembling, tremors, excessive crying, not sleeping well – some yawning, stuffy nose and sneezing, and a little bit of hyperactivity.” Lannon adds she’s pleased with the progress of the collaborative, and says hospitals and doctors are learning from each other to create standardized, evidenceinformed care across the state.
Standardized compassionate care practices are being used to help babies with neonatal abstinence syndrome in Ohio. (Chris Sternal-Johnson/Flickr) “Sadly, Ohio has been one of the states on the leading edge of the opioid epidemic,” she states. “And I think that people are really working hard to try to figure out how to improve care and outcomes
for the moms and the babies.” The Ohio Department of Medicaid funded the project. Lannon says further efforts will focus on care during pregnancy and examining long-term
outcomes for these infants. This story was produced in association with Media in the Public Interest and funded in part by The George Gund Foundation.

Bill in Congress Would Protect Ore. Landscape ‘Unique to World’
A measure in Congress would ban mining in 100,000 acres of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area in southwestern Oregon. (Zach Collier/Northwest Rafting Co.) By Desert Star Staff PORTLAND, Ore. — A hearing is scheduled in Congress today on a bill that would expand public-lands protections in Oregon. Sen. Ron Wyden and Sen. Jeff Merkley have introduced the Oregon Recreation Enhancement Act, which would extend safeguards for the Rogue River and
create protections for parts of the Molalla River in Clackamas County and rivers in southwestern Oregon. Pam Marsh, a state representative from Ashland, near the Rogue River, called the bill a generational investment that is especially important because of the greater demand to visit these places. “You can be on the Rogue
and you can really be out in the middle of nowhere on this tremendous river with these wonderful rapids and feel like you’re the only person on the planet,” Marsh said. “That’s a pretty extraordinary opportunity, and that’s why people go back and back and back to the Rogue.” The measure would create a 30,000-acre recreation area
near the Molalla River, establish the 98,000-acre Rogue Canyon Recreation Area and expand the existing Wild Rogue Wilderness Area by about 60,000 acres. It also would ban mining in 100,000 acres of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area. Zach Collier owns Northwest Rafting Company and said the bill makes amends for unfinished business. Protections for these areas were left out of a larger public-lands package passed earlier this year, but Wyden and Merkley vowed to bring them back. Collier noted these places are integral for local communities in Oregon that rely on recreation, and also the state’s bigger recreational picture. “We have Keen, who’s selling shoes, and we have Columbia Sportswear, that’s selling jackets,” Collier said. “So the recreation goes beyond just the direct recreational impact. It goes to our larger recreation economy here in Oregon, which
includes the equipment side.” According to the Outdoor Industry Association, outdoor recreation in Oregon generates more than $16 billion in consumer spending and more than 170,000 jobs. Protections from mining in the Kalmiopsis are especially important to Collier. He said it’s a mecca for botanists and a landscape unlike anywhere else on the planet. “I’m somebody who’s paddled all over the world. To me, these creeks are the most unique and rare things I’ve ever seen. They’re just really special,” he said. “So, I’m really excited that they’re up to be protected. They’ve very deserving of protection.” Today’s hearing will be before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources’ Subcommittee on Public Lands, Forests and Mining. Report: Factory Farming Driving Global Environmental Crisis
By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. – Factory farms and other industrial farming practices are contributing to a climate catastrophe, according to a new global assessment by the Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. North Carolina is home to thousands of industrial hog operations and, according to the report, these types of factory farms are significantly contributing to greenhouse-gas emissions. Patty Lovera, assistant director at Food and Water Watch, said while intensified agriculture has fed more people, it also has fueled pollution and water insecurity. “We’ve really intensified how most animals are being raised. Many of them are confined. Chickens are confined for their whole lives; so are pigs. Cattle are confined for a good chunk of their life,” Lovera said. “The footprint of how you raise that food for them, which is often corn or soybeans, that counts when we’re thinking about the environmental impact of this model.” Factory farms also release more air pollutants compared with small-scale farms. The enormous amount of manure produced by hundreds or even thousands of animals confined in one place emits particulate matter, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide into the air. North Carolina has the second highest number of industrial hog farms in

the country, and by some estimates there are more hogs in the state than people. Managing the animal waste produced by factory farms is an ongoing problem. Most operations store hog feces in unlined pits before pouring the waste into nearby fields known as lagoons. In North Carolina, flooding from Hurricane Matthew in 2016 inundated these lagoons, releasing untreated animal waste into waterways. “So in places like North Carolina, when you have a disaster like a hurricane, and you have all of that weather and all of that water, flooding lagoons that are full of animal waste, that’s a problem,” Lovera said. “But even without disasters, disposing of that waste on too small of an area of land creates all kinds of problems for water quality, for neighbors, the air that they breathe - it’s a very different system from how we used to raise animals.” Research has shown in North Carolina, the damage to air and water quality from hog farms is concentrated in low-income rural communities and in communities of color, leaving these populations to bear the brunt of environmental and health consequences. HOROSCOPES ARIES
It’s good to assess if there are any needs you or work colleague have that are unspoken, existing in a sort of mysterious process that comes to life only with conflict. This is a good question to ask in all relationships, but especially now due to all the world changes taking place. Are there legal papers or situations you must tend to? Make plans for implementation soon.
TAURUS It will soon be time to teach others what you know. You’ve been hiding information away until the right time and now is that time. You cannot do what you’ve been doing alone anymore for any length of time. Offer all that you have to others. You have many resources to offer. You’re entering a most spiritual time. Revelations appear, guiding your every day and night.
GEMINI Is there difficulty with concentration, communication, or making contact? Take this time to reflect upon what you value most in daily life. Should there be expectations placed upon you explain you’re working slowly now, pondering about your future plans in community. As you’re called to tasks not quite to your liking, remind yourself it’s an exercise in sacrifice (love at the center). Take it slow. Be the harmonizer wherever you find yourself.

CANCER
Are you tending to family these days as the world turns, changes, adjusts itself and transforms? Are you sleeping enough? And are you hungry? Soon something will slip into your life creating a sense of happiness. It comes with determination and courage and a new sense of creativity. You’ll feel inspired. Prepare for a new life to appear. It includes others. You will want to feed them and then realize the need to be more organized.
LEO It’s time to travel. However, should you feel you cannot leave home for whatever reason, it’s OK to remain there. The incoming energies are calling you to tend to personal issues that are of value; cleaning and clearing environments; ordering and organizing, with some time spent on research. Reach out to previous friends. Is there a misunderstanding to be explained, some care and tending to be offered?
VIRGO Make sure you’re getting enough vitamins and minerals, especially calcium/magnesium and B complex. There can be a lessening of appetite and a change in digestion. While monetary situations continue to be favorable, you discover more and more ways to balance accounts, more ways to bring in resources. Ponder upon the
nine tests Mars provides. Is something financial hidden?
LIBRA Make sure finances are in order, assess income and expenditures carefully. Tend to your relationships with enlightened care. It’s possible you may be a bit tired, impatient, confused and holding an old hurt. What do you need to feel safe and secure? Do you offer this to others? State clearly, in adult language, your needs and wishes. So many things hidden must be brought into the light of day. Rest more.
SCORPIO Your life assumes additional intensity (actually that’s your middle name), which you try to hide. But you’re unable to at this time. To ease the discomfort of this concentrated power, this force and energy coursing through your daily life, maintain consistent exercise. A new state of self as valuable is developing. Set your sights on goals that serve others. Happiness follows.
SAGITTARIUS The structure you’ve sought is finally forming both publicly and personally. But you must discipline yourself in the right use of energy and time. Many people waste valuable time in emotional endeavors because they don’t know what to do when emotions overtake them. Stay behind the scenes. Work on your foundation and home.
Plan for future endeavors or do nothing at all. You deserve rest and an affair to remember.
CAPRICORN It’s best not to assume extra tasks lest exhaustion undermines your immune system. You’re fully capable of holding the entire world on your shoulders, but soon this becomes unbearable and unattractive. Create a manifestation list stating hoped for goals, wishes, needs and priorities. This becomes a magnet. Those aspiring toward the same will appear. Delays are part of the pattern now. The US plans to deploy 120,000 troops in the Middle East By Desert Star Staff Donald Trump has reportedly been presented with a plan to send as many as 120,000 troops to the Middle East to counter the so-called Iranian threat, the New York Times reported. Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan disclosed the updated military plan at a meeting of Trump’s top security aides on Thursday, the publication said, quoting anonymous sources inside the administration. Several options to tackle Tehran in the region were outlined to the president during the briefing, while “the uppermost option called for deploying 120,000 troops, which would take weeks or months to complete,” the Times said. While the revisions “ordered” by “hard-liners” do not promulgate a land invasion of Iran, “the development reflects the

influence of Mr. Bolton, one of the administration’s most virulent Iran hawks,” The Times reported. Bolton has been a long-time advocate of using military force against Tehran, even penning an oped in 2015 titled “Top Stop Iran’s Bomb, Bomb Iran.” The proposal to send additional reinforcements comes amid accusations from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that Tehran has been engaging in “an escalating series of threatening actions and statements in recent weeks.” To counter the unspecified threat, the Pentagon has already deployed the USS ‘Abraham Lincoln’ carrier strike group and bomber task force, including B-52s, to the region. The deployment came exactly a year after Washington unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), and renewed sanctions against the
Islamic Republic’s financial, oil and banking sectors. The US has also labeled Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards Corps a “terrorist organization,” triggering a titfor-tat response from Tehran. May 15, 2019
Meanwhile, Iran said it will cancel part of its obligations under the nuclear agreement, and urged the European signatories to tackle Washington’s pressure. The US saber rattling
is “attempting to magnify the shadow of war,” Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi explained on Sunday night, noting that American military buildup in the region is “theatrical and useless.” www.desertstarweekly.com

KCET and Tastemade Series Kicks Off With “Broken Bread” at The Wiltern
Host of “Broken Bread” Roy Choi introduced a whole new generation of eaters and followers in what has been dubbed “America’s first viral restaurant” by Newsweek. Photo Courtesy KCET-TV In a rip-roaring, fun event, KCET, in association with Tastemade and Live Nation, hosted a screening of “Broken Bread” at the historic Wiltern art deco theatre as part of the Los Angeles Times “Food Bowl” dining events. Designed to bring together community organizations and individuals for an interactive exploration of the power of food, young people lined up around the block for a pre-screening reception, which included a variety of snacks and delicious homemade ice cream, all of which were provided by Kogi BBQ, Mariscos Jalisco and GD Bro Burger, participants in the Food Bowl. Roy Choi, executive producer and host of this socially conscious show, was named Food & Wine’s Best New Chef 2010 and is listed as one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in the World 2016, as well as LA Times Restaurant of the Year 2017. He is also the author of L.A. Son: My Life, My City, My Food, an award-winning New York Times Best Seller. The first to use Twitter, he ushered in a whole new generation of eaters and followers in what is now known as America’s first viral restaurant. The fascinating “Broken Bread” took us into the kitchens of Chef Carlos Salgado’s “Taco Maria,” Mar Diego’s “Dough Girl,” Bill Bracken’s “Bracken’s Kitchen,” Ron Finley’s “Gangsta Gardener,” and Homeboy Industries, one of the first innercity youth programs founded in 1992 by Father Greg Boyle. With the exception of Homeboy Industries, each these organizations was started by high-risk, former gang members who were incarcerated for any number of violent crimes. them the opportunity to earn a living, but to also contribute to providing healthy low fat, low sugar, low calorie foods to their Los Angeles neighborhoods, many of which are filled only with unhealthy fast-food restaurants. Choi takes you inside these kitchens where the young chefs demonstrate their cooking skills, turning out deliciously prepared food artistically presented in the same manner as a four-star restaurant. Besides the many kitchens, Choi takes you to some of the spectacular gardens created by formerly troubled youngsters who are now employed by “Gangsta Gardener.” Their designs and creative skills are, and one can see the pride they have in their accomplishments. Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns” Now on DVD In 1964 Disney’s “Mary Poppins” received 13 Oscar nominations and took home five Academy Awards. Julie Andrews won for Best Actress, and the Sherman Brothers (Robert & Richard) took home the gold for their song “Chim Chim Cher-ee.” Now 54 years later Mary Poppins has returned to the silver screen in a film appropriately titled “Mary Poppins Returns.” This time Mary Poppins is played by Emily Blunt, and Lin-Manuel Miranda is a lamplighter, not a chimney sweep as Dick Van Dyke was in the first film. The excellent news is Dick Van Dyke, now 93, has a delightful cameo as a 91-yearold banker. It’s worth the price of admission to watch him jump on top of a bank desk and do a lively tap dance. It’s the highlight of the movie. Rob Marshall (“Chicago,” “Into the Woods”) directs, and David Magee (“Finding Neverland,” “Life of Pi”) wrote the screenplay based on P.I. Travers books “Mary Poppins Comes Back” (1935) and “Mary Poppins Opens the Door” (1943).
This time the Banks children from the original story are grown. Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw), is a widower with three youngsters of his own (Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson). His sister Jane (Emily Mortimer), is a labor activist who lives nearby. When Mary Poppins makes her return appearance, floating down from the sky with her umbrella in hand, Michael is facing the loss of his family home due to an ill-advised loan he made with the bank where he works. His employer, William Weatherall Wilkins (Colin Firth), while seeming to be concerned, is obviously overjoyed at the prospect of foreclosing on Michael’s home since it will mean more money for the bank. There are some animated segments as Mary Poppins takes the children inside a porcelain bowl owned by their mother who said it was priceless. Earlier while fighting over the bowl, they accidentally drop it so Mary Poppins, ever helpful and resourceful, is going
to help them repair it. This eventually takes them to Mary’s cousin (Meryl Streep) who can fix anything. Angela Lansbury also makes a cameo appearance in the park where she sings as she sells her balloons. As in the first Mary Poppins film, there is music throughout composed by Marc Shaiman which is pleasant enough, like “Trip a Little Light Fantastic.”
However, these new songs are not as memorable as the Sherman brothers hits like “A Spoonful of Sugar Makes the Medicine Go Down,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee” or “Feed the Birds” which stand the test of time to this day. A tip of the hat to the first Mary Poppins film is the significant production number, not by chimney sweeps this time, but by Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), fellow lamplighters
and Mary Poppins. In the DVD featurette the cast, director and others who worked on the film talk about how “Mary Poppins Returns” was designed which is quite enlightening and informative. There is also a song that wasn’t in the film. “Mary Poppins Returns” is rated P.G. for some mild thematic elements and brief action. Running time: 2 hours, 11 minutes.

Arthur Lyons’ Film Noir Festival Celebrates its Twentieth Anniversary
Kathy Garver. Photo by Pat Krause By Pamela Price Whether you’re “Trapped” (1949) or “Somewhere in the Night” (1946) one or likely more of the thirteen dark, daunting films from the genre now known as Film Noir mesmerized fans at the historic Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs May 9-12th. The Twentieth Anniversary of the Arthur Lyons Film Noir film festival continues to lure fans to films from a bygone era. Film Noir sizzles with criminal characters, suspense, and blonde bombshells, yet this movie genre is different from all others “said loyal fans Frank Tysen and Marilyn Sue Will of Palm Springs who introduced me to this daunting film festival twenty years ago when the future of these black and white crimes inspired films were in danger of becoming extinct. That’s part of film history now thanks to Alan K. Rode, Producer and Host who picked up the reins after mystery writer and Palm Springs City Councilman Arthur Lyons with co-founder Barbara Lyons - Cherico established the Palm Springs Film Noir Festival. It was renamed in Mr. Lyon’s honor after his untimely passing in 2008. According to Noir history, Mr. Lyons mission was to create a “programmatic blend of archetypical and overlooked cinematic gems selected mainly from the classic film noir era.” Fast forward to 2019; today the Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival thrives thanks to the support of Ric and Rozene Supple founders of the Palm Springs Cultural Center and its 625-seat theatre renamed in their honor. Film noir fans arrived at the Opening Night starting at 6:30 PM for the Twentieth Anniversary Cake Cutting and Celebratory Toast which was followed the 7:30 PM screening of the slightly terrifying 1955 film, The Night of the Hunter starring Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters. Kathy Garver made her debut in this film which was “widely recognized as one of the seminal Hollywood movies of the 1950’s”. She was the special scheduled guest at the film’s conclusion. Rock, Blues, Soul, R&B and Roots Make For Sonic Stew
Artist: Vintage Trouble Title: Chapter II - EP II (Ingrooves) You might like if you enjoy: Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Gary Clark Jr. Tell me more: For the countless thousands of “Troublemakers” who have grooved, danced and been swept away by Vintage Trouble’s memorable performances opening for the legendary likes of The Rolling Stones, The Who, AC/DC and the Dave Matthews Band or at the rock ‘n’ soul quartet’s high-profile appearances at Coachella in 2013 or the Doheny Blues Festival in 2014, the great news is the band is set to perform at two Southern California festivals this weekend. Vintage Trouble will headline at the Joshua Tree Music Festival on May 18 and will return to the Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point on May 19. Those upcoming performances come on the heels of the release of the band’s fantastic new “Chapter II - EP II,” a 10-track title featuring five new studio songs and five forceful live cuts. The unbridled
power and energy that Vintage Trouble brings to the stage with every performance has been difficult to fully capture on the band’s commercial recordings; that is thankfully not the case with “Chapter II - EP,” which finds singer Ty Taylor, guitarist Nalle Colt, bassist Rick Barrio Dill and drummer Richard Danielson unleashing their genre-bending mix of rock, blues, soul and R&B with perfection. Taylor’s incredible vocals are persuasive throughout including on the modern stylings of “Everyone is Everyone” and “Don’t Stop Forever,” the soulful rocker “Knock Me Out” and via two versions of the nuanced soulful ballad “So Sorry” (both the live and studio versions end with stellar guitar work courtesy of Colt). The disc ends with an artfully- and amped-up live version of the Beatles’ “Come Together.” Information: VintageTrouble.com. Tedeschi Trucks Band Tell me more: Tapping into Memphis soul, Southern blues and classic R&B, Southern Avenue continues to blend their rich influences as they create something decidedly new on their sophomore effort “Keep On.” Memphis-bred singer Tierinii Jackson’s voice astounds via performances that are nuanced and creatively in tune with the songs. The rest of the excellent group includes Israel native Ori Naftaly (guitar), Tikyra Jackson (drums), and Jeremy Powell (keyboards). The album extols a sense of exuberance and joy, whether songs are explosive (“Keep On,” “Switchup,” “Jive”), anthemic (“We Are Not So Different,” She Gets Me High”) or make their poignant mark as soulful ballads (“We’re Gonna Make It,” “Lucky”). Southern Avenue will perform at the Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point on May 19. Information: SouthernAvenueMusic.com.
enjoy: Leon Russell, Elton John, Sam Bush Tell me more: Leon Russell and his New Grass Revival Band were in prime form when they were recorded at the celebrated Gilley’s nightclub in Pasadena, Texas on Sept. 17, 1981. Brandishing the troupe’s so-called “rhythm and bluegrass” style, Russell (who sadly passed away at the age of 74 in November 2016) and his five-man outfit shine across this wonderful must-hear release. Among the many standout moments on the 12-track recording are the beautiful piano-anchored ballad “Lady Blue,” countrified blues Southern rocker “In the Pines,” bluegrass-on-speed take of Bill Monroe’s “Uncle Pen,” and signature Russell originals “A Song For You” and “Prince Of Peace.” The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s vocals are emotive and astound across the disc. Tom Petty, Chris Hillman, John Mellencamp Tell me more: Nashvillebased singer-songwriter/ multi-instrumentalist/producer Will Kimbrough is not a household name — he should be. Based on the power and ambitious reach displayed across his newly-released masterwork “I Like It Down Here” (the Alabama native’s 9th solo release since 2000!), fans of authentic Americana and heartland rock ‘n’ roll will all find plenty to admire in his original song craft and stellar musicianship. The great material ranges from the Tom Petty-flavored “Hey Trouble” and gritty blues of “Buddah Blues” to the melodic “I’m Not Running Away” and probing “Anything Helps.” The moving and sparse “Alabama” finds Kimbrough’s voice joined by that of blues singer Shemekia Copeland as they chronicle the lynching of Michael Donald in Mobile, Alabama in 1981. In addition to Copeland, other guests include singer Savana Lee Crawford, Brigitte DeMeyer and Dean Owens. Information: WillKimbrough.com.

Trump says he will meet with Xi and Putin at G20
By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump has said he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at next month’s G20 summit in Osaka, Japan.
Trump announced the pair of meetings to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday afternoon. “I’ll be meeting with him directly, President Xi. Yes, I will be meeting with President
Putin also,” he said. Earlier that morning, Russian newspaper Kommersant reported that Washington had requested a meeting with Putin, and was awaiting
the Kremlin’s response. A Kremlin spokesman responded to Trump’s statement on Monday by saying no preparations were underway for such a meeting. The meeting with Putin comes at a time of strained relations between Washington and Moscow. Although Trump and Putin discussed a range of geopolitical issues in an hour-long phone call less than two weeks ago, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov are expected to clash over the ongoing Venezuela crisis and Iran’s nuclear program when they meet in Sochi on Tuesday. Pompeo and Lavrov will likely also discuss the US’ recent withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, and the US’ last deployment of a carrier group to the Persian
China strikes back at Trump’s new tariffs By Desert Star Staff Beijing has retaliated against Washington’s recent tariffs by imposing export levies targeting $60 billion worth of US goods, effective June 1, China’s Ministry of Finance announced on Monday. The tariff hike of up to 25 percent will affect more than 5,000 items imported from the US to China. The step comes in response to the latest hike of export duties the Trump administration implemented on billions of dollars’ worth of Chinese products. Last week, the White House increased American tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25 percent from 10 percent, previously. Earlier, China’s Foreign Ministry said that the country would never surrender to foreign pressure amid renewed threats from
Washington to impose tariffs on all Chinese goods. “China will never surrender to external pressure. We have the confidence and the ability to protect our lawful and legitimate rights,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a daily news briefing on Monday. The world’s two biggest economies have been involved in a full-scale trade dispute over the past two years. In early 2018, US President Donald Trump accused China of stealing trade secrets, forcing foreign companies to hand over technology as the price of access to the Chinese market, while subsidizing its own tech companies. Trump has raised tariffs on Chinese goods in an attempt to narrow the trade deficit between the US and China. Beijing has called the measure by Washington protectionism. Global stock markets
tumbled on Monday on news of the Chinese response. The S&P 500 fell 1.46 percent, Dow futures dropped 1.36 percent while Nasdaq futures declined 1.99 percent. Separately, Beijing reportedly threatened to single out US aircraft
maker Boeing as part of the ongoing trade dispute. The news sent shares in the US aircraft manufacturer down more than three percent. “China may stop purchasing US agricultural products and energy, reduce Boeing orders and restrict
Gulf, under the auspices of countering what they claim is Iranian aggression. Trump’s meeting with Xi will most likely focus on trade. In the latest escalation of the countries’ tit-for-tat trade war, China announced on Monday it would hike tariffs on $60 billion in American goods as high as 25 percent. That move comes after the White House increased tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports from 10 percent to 25 percent last Friday. Shortly before the meeting with Xi was announced, Trump took to Twitter to predict US tariffs forcing companies to leave China for cheaper locations like Vietnam, and press China to make a deal to end the trade dispute. “China should not retaliate,” he tweeted. “Will only get worse.”
US service trade with China. Many Chinese scholars are discussing the possibility of dumping US Treasuries and how to do it correctly,”Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of staterun media outlet Global Times, said in a tweet.
Guaido asks US military for meeting to ‘restore democracy’ in Venezuela By Desert Star Staff Officials loyal to the US-backed self-proclaimed president Juan Guaido have requested a meeting with US Southern Command to begin planning a military intervention in Venezuela, after multiple failed attempts to take power. Guaido’s ambassador to the US, Carlos Vecchio, published on Monday a letter he sent to SOUTHCOM requesting a “meeting with a technical delegation to advance in strategic and operational planning” in order to “restore
14
DesertSTAR
democracy” in Venezuela. The government swiftly condemned Vecchio’s letter in Caracas. “We reject the letter by one of the coup leaders asking for military intervention in Venezuela, on behalf of a group of coup plotters who carry out terrorist activities to create confusion and destabilize our homeland,” VicePresident Delcy Rodriguez said in an appearance on Venezuelan television. The letter is dated May 11. Two days prior,
SOUTHCOM tweeted out a statement by its commander, Admiral Craig Faller, saying “We stand ready!” to support Venezuelan military officers who are willing to side against the government in Caracas – and were only waiting for Guaido’s invitation. Earlier this month, Faller voiced the same sentiment to a congressional committee, urging Venezuelan officials currently loyal to President Nicolas Maduro to “do the right thing” and switch their allegiance to the USbacked opposition leader. May 15, 2019
Though Vecchio’s request was sent on Venezuelan embassy stationery, he does not have access to the embassy building in Washington, DC. After Maduro’s government severed diplomatic ties with the US, it permitted a group of American activists calling themselves the “Embassy Protection Collective” to occupy the building in order to prevent it from falling into the hands of Guaido supporters. Attempts to force them out by cutting off food supplies, water and electricity have
so far been unsuccessful. Guaido, elected to chair the National Assembly last December, declared himself “interim president” in January, calling Maduro a dictator and usurper. Despite claiming to command the loyalty of most Venezuelans, all of Guaido’s attempts to take over Miraflores Palace have failed. The most recent stunt involved an attempted military takeover but fizzled out within a few hours when only a handful of troops joined his cause.

your Response on time, the court may make orders affecting your marriage and property. For legal advice, contact a lawyer immediately. If you cannot pay the filing fee, ask the clerk for a fee waiver form. NOTICE— STANDARD FAMILY LAW RESTRAINING ORDERS: These restraining orders are effective against both spouses until the petition is dismissed, a judgment is entered, or the court makes further orders. They are enforceable anywhere in California by any law enforcement officer who has received or seen a copy of them. Starting immediately, you and your spouse or domestic partner are restrained from: 1. Cashing, borrowing against, canceling, transferring, disposing of, or changing the beneficiaries of any insurance or other coverage, including life, health, automobile, and disability, held for the benefit of the parties and their minor children; 2. Transferring, encumbering, hypothecating, concealing, or in any way disposing of any property, real or personal, whether community, quasi-community, or separate, without the written consent of the other party or an order of the court, except in the usual course of business or for the necessities of life; and 3. Creating a nonprobate transfer or modifying a nonprobate transfer in a manner that affects the disposition of property subject to the transfer, without the written consent of the other party or an order of the court. Before revocation of a nonprobate transfer can take effect or a right of survivorship to property can be eliminated, notice of the change must be filed and served on the other party. You must notify each other of any proposed extraordinary expenditures at least five business days prior to incurring these extraordinary expenditures and account to the court for all extraordinary expenditures made after these restraining orders are effective. However, you may use community property, quasi-community property, or your own separate property to pay an attorney to help you or to pay court costs. WARNING—IMPORTANT INFORMATION California law provides that, for purposes of division of property upon dissolution of a marriage, property acquired by the parties during marriage in joint form is presumed to be community property. If either party to this action should die before the jointly held community property is divided, the language in the deed that characterizes how title is held (i.e., joint tenancy, tenants in common, or community property) will be controlling, and not the community property presumption. You should consult your attorney if you want the community property presumption to be written into the recorded title to the property. Publish May 1, 8, 15, 22, 2019. Desert Rose Playhouse of Rancho Mirage, CA Scores In “Pageant” By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association The Desert Rose Playhouse located in Rancho Mirage, Ca is the only theatre venue dedicated to serving the LGBTQ community of the Coachella Valley It has an excellent track record of presenting both gay-themed and straight productions over the years. Quality writing with solid performance is an equal opportunity employer and is the goal of what really matters to any theatre audience. As the Bard of Avon says “The plays the thing,” which is really the name of the game. When the IRS and the Census Bureau counted noses of Coachella residents, it discovered that various election results over the years find the gay community of the Coachella Valley to be the dominant demographic. Thanks to the valley’s vibrant theatre scene there is plethora of theatres to enjoy stage productions in all its forms and styles. The Desert Rose Playhouse recently underwent a passing of the “management torch,” so to speak, from founders Paul Taylor and Jim Strait to
Robbie Wayne, the new artistic director and to Kam Sisco, the new producing manager. Paul and Jim now prefer the trade winds, beaches, and luau dinners as residents of Hawaii, our 50th State in their golden years of retirement. However, when visiting the mainland and the desert they still attend Desert Rose Playhouse performances when available. Messrs. Taylor and Strait set the bar high, and now Mr. Wayne and Mr. Sisco are dedicated to raising it even higher. “Pageant,” a send-up musical about the world of beauty pageants everywhere, is created by Bill Russell and Frank Kelly and directed by artistic director Robbie Wayne. According to director Wayne, the show is strictly a satiric comedy presentation intended to be just fun for the audience. There is no hidden agenda message being delivered by its cast or the writers. The story, such as it is, unfolds in a series of quasisketches performed by the cast that reflects the various judging categories in which the “ladies” compete on the road to becoming crowned “Miss Glamouresse” (think Bert Parks and the old Miss America pageants). The faux Glamouresse beauty pageant is hosted by
Franky Cavalier (Michael Pacas) who introduces the contestants and puts the ladies through their paces. There’s a lot of tongue-in-cheek intro’s that the ladies endure before they get to strut their stuff. And it’s all done in the name good fun. The contestants for Miss Glamouresse in alphabetical order are: Noah Arce as Miss Industrial Northeast; Larry Martin as Miss Great Plains; Timm McBride as Miss Texas; Ben Reece as Miss Bible Belt; Brian Keith Scott as Miss Jersey Shore; and longtime professional “drag diva” performer Miss Rusty Waters as Miss Deep South. There’s no ‘camp turns’ or moments in this entertaining show.
The production could be sub-billed as “Seven Guys and a Gal.” The single female, however, doesn’t appear on stage in this “Pageant” production. Jaci Davis, is the musical’s piano accompanist and a fabulous actor in her own right; makes sure the singer/actors on stage stay on key - which they do! “Pageant” is a glittering, gorgeously produced, costumed musical that is a crowd-pleasing production. The technical credits of set design by Bruce Weber, and lighting design by the redoubtable Phil Murphy, along with glittering costumes created by director Wayne and Ruth Braun. “Pageant,” is the final
production of the Desert Rose Playhouse 2018-2019 season. Their traditional summer season show is “Ruthless the Musical,” which will perform from June 21 to July 14 2019. The Fall season kicks off with Charles Busch’s comic melodrama “Die, Mommie, Die!“ inspired by the 1960’s movies of Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and Lana Turner, as aging Hollywood divas who refuse to grow old as performers. Playdates for “Die, Mommie, Die!” are October 4 through October 27 2019. The box office for Desert Rose Playhouse will be accepting reservations for “Ruthless the Musical” and season subscription tickets beginning the week of May 27.
Improving Your Children’s Health 3 ways to take a proactive approach
A

s a sign of the times, Millennial moms continue to lean toward proactive and preventative care when it comes to the health of their babies. A survey of more than 300 moms in the United States from Evivo baby probiotic revealed more than half approach their children’s health with a proactive mindset. They are more likely to conduct their own research before visiting their pediatrician (more than 80 percent), and also inquire about particular ways they can improve the overall health of their children, even if they are not sick. These tips can help you advocate for and improve the overall health of your baby:
Schedule regular well-visits
Although paying close attention to your baby’s appetite, activity level and general condition can provide ample information about his or her health, it can’t rule out every possible concern. That’s why the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents schedule regular wellness visits during the first six months of a child’s life and beyond. During these visits, physicians can monitor for problems that may not be readily visible and they are also an opportunity for parents to ask questions. In addition to ageappropriate visits to the pediatrician, it’s also a good idea to begin preventive eye and dental care at an early age.
Be proactive about gut health
The first six months of life are a critical time to focus on gut health. Remember to pay attention to the bacteria living in the gut as it pertains to the development of the immune system. Research from the University of California, Davis shows the critical strain B. infantis, which is known to naturally protect baby’s gut from bad bacteria, is missing in nine of 10 U.S. babies today. When the strain is not present in the infant gut, it allows potentially harmful bacteria to thrive, which are linked to higher risk of colic, eczema, allergies, asthma, diabetes and obesity. “The connection between rising autoimmune conditions and early immune health is becoming stronger with research about B. infantis and its impact on the infant gut microbiome, which makes the first six months of life a critical window to be proactive about gut health and restore B. infantis,” said Dr. Tanya Altmann, a pediatrician and best-selling nutrition author.

Thirty-seven percent of moms said they give their child a probiotic to encourage good health. Parents can promote immune health with an option like Evivo, which is the only baby probiotic clinically proven to restore B. infantis to natural levels. To learn more, visit evivo.com.
Incorporate plant-based foods for optimal nutrition
Breastfeeding is a significant first step in making sure your baby is getting all the nutrients he or she needs. Once you start feeding your child solids, it’s also important to introduce a wide variety of foods with high

fiber, including fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains. According to the survey, parents today are focusing on whole foods to provide nutrients, as 47 percent of moms said they’re incorporating more plant-based foods into their family’s diets and 31 percent are eating more organic. If you have a picky eater, it can get tricky to get him or her to eat more fruits, veggies and whole grains on a regular basis, but an option like smoothies can be a simple way to pack in the nutrients. There are many actions parents can take to promote healthy lifestyles for their children, but focusing on gut health and nutrition in the early months of their lives can be a good place to start.
