Coachella Valley Symphony 25th anniversary Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Coachella Valley Symphony celebrated its 25th anniversary with a “Thanks For The Memories” special, as its final 2017-2018 season concert. The concert was held at the McCallum Theatre and starred Melissa Manchester. The Coachella Valley Symphony was started in 1993 by Jeannette Banoczi. In 1995 with the help of Beverly Rogers, began the Buddy Rogers Youth Symphony where children of all ages get to experience playing within a symphony format by making public appearances and performing in concerts. Over 1500 children have benefitted from this free
program. Benoczi passed away in August 2017. The concert started with an Overture to “West Side Story, and a Duke Ellington Medley still so prevalent songs today. The conductor, John Mario, told of each performance before it began as they performed, Silver Fanfare from, On Musics Wings by Peter Boyle. Then it was time for an Intermission before honors were bestowed. The McCallum was filled with Symphony lovers who marveled at the beautiful songs they chose to perform. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The annual Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival was held on May 10th thru the 13th at the Palm Springs Cultural Center formerly The Camelot Theatre. This festival is a film buffs dream when movie fans get to watch the old black and white movies of yesteryear. They brought to the screen some of the most well-known movie stars that continued to have significant careers in the film industry. Some of these films were considered dark films dealing with underground characters and Good Guys with femme fatales. Alan K. Rode is the Host and Producer who has
been involved with this festival for years. You can see him occasionally on Turner Classic Movie TV Channel where he tells about the movie to be shown and some of the backlot stories few people know. The name of the Theatre may have changed, but the films are shown in Theatre One, The Camelot Theatre. The Theatre was gifted to the Cultural Center by owner Ric and Rozene Supple. The theatre is the host to many film festivals each year. Rode said the Theatre is exceptional because they are still able to show films in the original 35mm reel to reel format.
He noted that 10 of the 12 movies shown would be from the film. So many of these movies are being preserved and formatted to save them. Very few are available on DVD, so the only way to see them is at the festivals like this one. This year the first Celebrity actor was Jack O’Halloran who was an actor in the movie, Farewell My Lovely, which was the opening night movie on Thursday and did a Q&A after the film. Friday saw the film, Larceny, The Turning Point, The Unsuspected and The Webb. Special guest was Victori Price, daughter of Vincent Price and an author of, A Daughter’s
Biography, about her father. Rode and Price signed their books after the films. Saturday was another day of famous movies from the 40s and 50s, Chicago Deadline, The Red House, The Man Who Cheated Himself and the final film, Witness For the Prosecution with Special Guest Ruta Lee. Ruta Lee and her husband Webb Lowe are part-time Palm Springs residents. Lee has had a long career in Movies and TV. Lee comes to the Desert to support various causes. She has been involved with the Thalians for many years. Sunday brought more
great films like, Under the Gun and Flamingo Road. The movie, Kiss of Death with Victor Mature brought his daughter Victoria Mature to the Theatre for a Q&A. In these movies, guests got to see their favorite actors and actresses like Robert Mitchum, Dan Duryea, Edmond O’Brien, Claude Rains, Alan Ladd, Donna Reed, Edward G, Robinson, Lee J. Cobb, Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton, Richard Conte, Victor Mature, Joan Crawford, Sidney Greenstreet and more. These great actors made these films timeless and the stories thrilling.
Story and Photos by Pat Krause Desert Arc held its first CV Link Beautification on May 7th. Desert Arc’s licensed and bonded Landscape Maintenance Division was engaged to keep the CV Link clean and appealing by removing trash from the area, as well as, doing light landscaping and alerting Cathedral City to any graffiti and other issues. Renova Energy’s Vincent Battaglia joined in the first cleanup of the first leg of CV Link. Marking the Beautification
Crew’s first day on the job for the first completed stretch of the CV Link, they started at the entry to Escena off of Vista Chino. Battaglia, CEO, and Founder of Renova Energy recommended Desert Arc to assume responsibility for this landscaping maintenance work. Renova Energy champions the cause of Desert Arc by hiring people with disabilities. This company believed in firsts and adopted the first completed section of CV Link in Palm Springs
thru the Coachella Valley Association of Governments “Adopt-a-Link Program.” The first section runs from Vista Chino to Ramon Road in Cathedral City. It’s beautiful, clean and full, with a vista of the mountains and desert. Vincent Battaglia was on the scene to officially thank Desert Arc’s Beautification Crew as they began clearing trash, sweeping sidewalks, raking the area and looking for graffiti. They found a large bag of trash in a small space that they checked that day.
Battaglia noted they would be coming once a week to clear the area of waste. Three members of the Desert Arc crew worked that first day. They were proud to wear their bright green logo vests provided by Renova Energy for safety and visibility. Renova Energy gave each person a Renova water bottle that they filled at the water fountain by the entrance. There is a large metal structure that provides shade to the benches for comfort in the heat. Battaglia, Renova Energy
staff, Desert Arc staff, and Beautification Crew Members all joined in to Launch this CV Link Landscape Maintenance Program. Desert Arc serves adults 18 and older with disabilities. They currently provide services to over 700 clients to enhance their quality of life by seeking employment in recycling, landscaping, kitchen and janitorial work and various other jobs. These programs give clients confidence, security, a type of importance and interaction with others.

Ten things you should know about RMDS
By Janice Gough 10. Owners of Roth IRAs do not have to take RMDs. Roth owners can leave the money in there for their heirs to enjoy if they so desire. Roth accounts are funded with after-tax dollars; therefore, when the time comes during retirement that you do need the money, you can withdraw all contributions along with earnings, taxfree. Now, with heirs: there are rules that govern their withdrawals from an inherited Roth, and they will be subject to taxes on the money and are subject to RMDs.

9. RMDs must begin before April 1 of the year after the owner turns Age 70 ½. In other words, if you turn 70½ some- time this year, you’ll have to begin taking money from your retirement account(s) before April 1 of 2019, unless you haven’t yet retired. If you are a 5 percent owner of the business sponsoring the retirement plan, RMDs must begin once you turn 70½, even if you haven’t yet retired. But if you are not a part owner of the business and you have retired, you need to take that first RMD before next April 1, the RMD you take before April 1 of 2019 is for the tax year 2018; and on December 31 of 2019, you have to take another RMD, for the tax year 2018. This is because once you’ve turned 70½, the deadline changes and withdrawals must be made by December 31st of all subsequent years or you must pay a 50 percent penalty on the amount of the withdrawal. 8. RMD Rules Apply to All Employer-Sponsored Retirement Plans. That includes profit-sharing, 401(k), 403(b) and 457(b) plans. The rules also apply to traditional IRAs and IRAbased plans such as SEPs, SARSEPs and SIMPLE IRAs.
6. Calculation of RMDS must be done separately; however, you can take all the Money from a Single account. At least, you can use for IRAs and 403(b)s. While you have to go through the work of separate calculations for each account, you don’t have to take as many withdrawals as you have accounts; instead, you can opt to take the money from one or more accounts. RMDs required from Group retirement plans, such as 401(k) and 457(b) plans, do have to be taken separately from each of those
plan accounts. This is due to administration of Group plans.
5. You are accountable if the calculation is not done right. Your IRA custodian or retirement plan administrator may calculate the RMD, however, You, as the account owner, are the one who’s ultimately responsible for calculating the amount of the RMD, thus make sure you check your work. 4. Remember. It is Required Minimum Distribution That means you can take more than that if you want, or need to. But you can’t take less. You may not apply the extra to next year’s RMD, which starts the clock ticking again. 3. The Time Schedule Must be met! If you fail to take an RMD on time, you’ll be hit with a penalty of 50 percent on the amount that should have been withdrawn, which means that if you were supposed to take $10,000 by December 31 and didn’t, you’ll get penalized $5,000 for the omission. This is money that can go up in smoke 2. There are ways to get the Penalty waived. If you can convince the IRS that your failure to withdraw
the full and correct amount “was due to reasonable error and that reasonable steps are being taken to remedy the shortfall,” you might be able to avoid the penalty. To qualify, though, you have to file IRS Form 5329 and attach a letter of explanation. 1. RMDS are Taxed at your Regular Tax Rate The percentage you’ll be paying is based on your income tax bracket. Is Our HOA Now A Free Speech Zone?
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: Thank you for your always insightful columns. I have a question regarding the new state law supporting use of common facilities for political activities, and one on first amendment rights. The new law allows residents to use common facilities for political meetings without charge. May the HOA limit attendance to only residents, residents and guests according to its adopted policies, or may/must these programs be open to all? Can an HOA prohibit the display of political signage on front lawns? For example, must the HOA allow residents to have campaign signs? Are there limitations to this allowance like size, length of display time, etc. as established in the HOA rules and policies? With what promises to be a contentious election season this year, this information will be quite timely. B.S., Murrieta Dear B.S.: The new law you mention is Civil Code 4515, which bars associations from charging a fee or requiring insurance as a condition of holding meetings
www.desertstarweekly.com
7. The IRS provided Tables used to calculate the amount of the RMD for each account. You must calculate the RMD for each retirement account you have. The tables provided by the IRS are for life expectancies: The Joint and Last Survivor Table is what you use if the sole beneficiary of the account is your spouse and your spouse is more than 10 years younger than you, The Unified Lifetime Table is used if your spouse is not your sole beneficiary or your spouse is not more than 10 years younger. The Single Life Table is used if you are a beneficiary of an account (an inherited IRA).
which relate to “common interest development living, association elections, legislation, election to public office, or the initiative, referendum, or recall processes”(Civil 4515(b)(1). That is a very broad (and vague) array of topics, but the association can still require a deposit or insurance for other uses of the common facilities. Also, while the statute says the association cannot bar the use (if the facility is available), that does not mean the HOA has to give carte blanche. For example, if someone wants to hold an event and serve alcohol, the association could reasonably allow the meeting, but not allow food or alcohol to be served without a deposit or insurance. In that instance, the HOA would not be banning the meeting, but only restricting food or alcohol at the meeting. Section 4515(b)(2) is more troubling. While all the other protected meetings under the statute refer to meetings of members, this section provides that a meeting “(i)nviting public officials, candidates for public office, or representatives of homeowner organizations” can include members, residents, and their invitees or guests. So, if someone wanted to push a particular political candidate May 16, 2018
and hold a rally for that candidate in the clubhouse, that member’s outside invitees could participate. This could be quite troublesome if the community is gated, overwhelming the security staff, or if the speaker is quite controversial (or even abhorrent). Without naming examples, we can all imagine a scenario in which a candidate known for hate speech or other repugnant positions is invited to speak in the HOA – and no matter how awful the candidate or their views, this statute protects their right to be invited and for the member inviting them to bring outside guests. With regard to the posting of signage, this has been covered by Civil Code 4710, which became law in 2004. That statute protects the right of residents to place noncommercial signs of up to 9
square feet in size or banners of up to 15 feet in size in their separate interest or exclusive use common area. This means that a homeowner in a planned development could place one sign of up to 9 square feet in their lot, so long as the sign was noncommercial and not made of certain prohibited materials. Are We Winning the War on Cancer? What to Know • Patent Law Review. There is a need for powerful drugs, but there is also a need for a gentler, holistic approach. Under the current status quo, pharmaceutical companies are rewarded for creating synthetic and highly toxic drugs when elements of nature could be used safely and effectively in many instances, say experts. • Funding for Alternative Science Research. “My father had the idea that if nature came up with carcinogens, nature had also come up with anticarcinogens. He discovered two of them: the bark of a tree from the Amazon rainforest and an extract from a bush in West Africa. Research confirmed their efficacy on a large array of cancers and their ability to work in synergy with chemotherapy,” says Beljanski. • Law Reform. Law reform that would allow legitimate dietary supplements to promote and highlight their benefits would help educate consumers. Furthermore, insurance companies should cover supplements, she urges. • Government Audit. The government should conduct an audit of its success and failures in funding cancer prevention and treatment research. • Data Sharing. “As long
as pharmaceutical companies’ quest for innovation is solely driven by intellectual property rights, they will keep failing in the war on cancer,” says Beljanski, who advocates for a shared, centralized database and open collaboration from the best scientists, doctors and researchers. • Prevention and Education. In the long-run, the smartest approach is prevention. Citizens must continue to become informed, active consumers, taking the initiative to read labels, avoid junk food and addictive substances, relieve stress, exercise and eat balanced meals. “The mind-body connection is strong and individuals have the power to create a healthier life for themselves,” says Beljanski. More information on cancer and Beljanski’s new book, is available at winingthewaroncancer.com. All of the author’s proceeds are being donated to help fund anticancer research. While the war on cancer will be long and hard-fought, experts say that a shifted approach to prevention, treatment and research will ultimately mean lives saved. StatePoint
By Desert Star Staff New cancer cases and deaths are both predicted to rise over the next two decades, according to the latest World Cancer Report. Despite billions of dollars of investment in research, survival gains for the most common forms of cancer are still measured in additional months of life, not years. Can cancer be cured? Some experts say the answer is yes, but that it will require reversing course on the way it’s researched and treated. “Integrative medicine may allow us to win the war on
cancer if done intelligently,” says Sylvie Beljanski, author of the new breakthrough book “Winning the War on Cancer: The Epic Journey Towards a Natural Cure,” which reveals the discoveries of her late father’s suppressed research -- Dr. Mirko Beljanski, a biologist-biochemist at the Pasteur Institute who spent over 40 years studying the environmental impact on DNA replication and transcription. “When my father started to rethink the origin of cancer and to develop molecules able to selectively block cancerous
By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho – It’s Older Americans Month, a celebration of the country’s seniors and also a chance to recognize some of the challenges they face. Today, the Idaho Commission on Aging is presenting the governor’s proclamation for Older Americans Month to the Metro Meals on Wheels program at the Meridian Senior Center. Judy Taylor, head of the Idaho Commission on Aging, says it’s important to honor older Americans as a way of saying thank you. She says hunger is one of the major barriers seniors face when trying to stay in their homes. “What we really want to do is help people age successfully in the community and not ever need to be institutionalized,” she says. “And, of course, the backbone
of that is basic nutrition.” One in six seniors in the United States faces food insecurity, meaning they aren’t sure where their next meal is coming from. That’s more than 37,000 seniors in Idaho. The theme of Older Americans Month this year is “Engage at Every Age.” The governor’s proclamation is being presented at 11:45 A.M. Metro Meals on Wheels serves fresh and nutritious foods to seniors in the Treasure Valley. Grant Jones, director of the program, says seniors sometimes have to make hard decisions based on how much money they have. “They think, ‘Okay, let’s see, I have a prescription I need to fill or I have multiple prescriptions I need to fill and I have a limited amount of money in which to purchase those,’” he says. “’So
you know what, I’ll go ahead and buy the prescriptions as opposed to the food.’” The Idaho Hunger Relief Task Force applauds the Metro Meals on Wheels program for giving seniors a chance to stay in their homes and independent.
The program serves more than 900 hot meals every weekday. Jones says another advantage is that deliverers have a chance to check in on seniors, who face a higher risk of social isolation. “When a Meals on Wheels volunteer comes to their door
and brings their meal, there’s also that interaction,” he adds. “There’s that socialization. There’s that contact with the outside world and someone to really check on them and make sure that they are okay.”
KMIR News Staff The White House said Monday that Melania Trump was hospitalized after undergoing a procedure to treat a benign kidney condition. The first lady’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said the procedure was successful and that there were no complications.
Grisham said Mrs. Trump is at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center just outside Washington and will likely remain there for the rest of the week. The White House did not offer any additional details on Mrs. Trump’s condition. Mrs. Trump, who has been gradually raising her profile as first lady,
recently hosted her first state dinner and launched a public awareness campaign to help children. With the president watching in the Rose Garden, Mrs. Trump last week unveiled the “Be Best” campaign, which she said will focus on childhood well-being, social media use and opioid abuse. The first lady, who’s 48,
lived full time in New York during the administration’s opening months so the couple’s son, Barron, now 12, would not have to change schools midyear. She and Barron moved into the White House last June and since then the first lady has been raising her public profile. Mrs. Trump joined her husband last month to host
the prime minister of Japan for a two-day summit at the Trumps’ Florida estate, and the Trumps hosted the president of France at the White House on a threeday state visit, including a lavish state dinner. FAMILY FEATURES
illions of people with Medicare will receive new, more secure Medicare cards in the mail in 2018. The new cards replace Social Security Number-based Medicare numbers with a new, unique, personalized Medicare Number, known as the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier. Each person with Medicare will have his or her own number. The cards will be mailed automatically, free of charge, and there will be no changes to Medicare users’ current benefits. The new Medicare cards no longer contain a person’s Social Security number, but rather a unique, randomly-assigned Medicare number that protects people’s identity, helps reduce fraud and offers better safeguards of important health and financial information. Removing Social Security Numbers from Medicare cards is one of the ways the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is helping to protect the identities of people with Medicare. The unique Medicare Number not only increases protections from fraud for people with Medicare, it also makes it harder for criminals to use Social Security Numbers to falsely bill Medicare for care services and benefits that were never performed. CMS is mailing the new Medicare cards in geographic waves. This means people with Medicare may not get their new card at the same time as their
friends or neighbors. People with Medicare and their caregivers can visit medicare.gov/newcard to find out when cards will be mailed to their areas. They can also sign up for email notifications about the card-mailing and check the card-mailing status in their states. As soon as people receive their new Medicare cards, they should safely and securely destroy their old Medicare cards and start using their new cards right away. In addition to using the new cards, consider these tips for further protecting yourself from identity theft:
Protect the New Card Number
People with Medicare should guard their new card like it is a credit card and only give their Medicare Number to people they know should have it. Medicare, or someone representing Medicare, will never contact people with Medicare to ask for their Medicare Number or other personal information unless they have been given specific permission in advance.
Look Out for Scams As the new Medicare cards are mailed, be on the lookout for scams. n Don’t pay for your new card. It’s free. If anyone calls and says you need to pay for it, that’s a scam.
n
n
Don’t give personal information to get your card. If someone calls claiming to be from Medicare asking for your Social Security Number or bank information, hang up. Medicare will never ask you to give personal information to get your new number and card. Guard your card. When you get your new card, safeguard it like you would health insurance or credit cards. While removing the Social Security Number cuts down on many types of identity theft, you’ll still want to protect your new card because identity thieves could use it to receive medical services.
The 4 R’s of Fighting Fraud
It is important to remember that you are the first line of defense in protecting yourself against Medicare fraud, and should make a habit of monitoring online accounts. Remember the four R’s for fighting fraud: n Record doctors’ appointments and services n Review claims for any you don’t recognize n Report suspected fraud to CMS by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800633-4227) n Remember to protect your Medicare Number
10 Things to Remember About New Medicare Cards Make note of these facts to help ensure a smooth transition to your new card. 1. Your card will have a new Medicare Number that’s unique to you, instead of your Social Security Number. This can help protect your identity and keep your personal information more secure. 2. Your card will automatically come to you at no cost. You don’t need to do anything as long as your address is up-to-date. If you need to update your address, visit socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. 3. You can find out when your card is mailing by signing up for email notifications at Medicare. gov/NewCard. 4. Your Medicare coverage and benefits will stay the same. 5. Mailing takes time, and Medicare will mail the new cards by April 2019. Your card may arrive at a different time than your friend’s or neighbor’s. 6. Once you get your new Medicare card, destroy your old Medicare card and start using your new one right away. Rather than simply throwing the old card away, shred it or cut it into small pieces.
www.desertstarweekly.com
7. Your card will be paper and not laminated, which makes it easier for many providers to use and copy for their records. 8. If you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO), your Medicare Advantage Plan ID card is your main card for Medicare. You should still keep and use it whenever you need care. However, you also may be asked to show your new Medicare card, so you should carry this card, too. 9. Doctors, other health care providers and facilities know your new card is coming and will ask for your new Medicare card when you need care, so carry it with you. 10. Only give your new Medicare Number to doctors, pharmacists, other health care providers, your insurers or people you trust to work with Medicare on your behalf. Treat your Medicare Number like you treat your credit card numbers. Medicare will never contact you uninvited to ask for personal information.

Teachers Cite Testing Trauma in Call for Legislation
By Desert Star Staff ALBANY, N.Y. – Educators say recent problems with highstakes testing in New York’s public schools highlight the need for change. New York State United Teachers, the union representing educators across the state, has released a report called “The Tyranny of Testing,” a compilation of firsthand accounts of problems students and teachers faced in the most recent round of standardized testing for grades three to eight. Supporters of standardized tests say teacher evaluations must have an objective, statewide measurement and the tests fill that need. But according to Carl Korn, chief press officer for the union, some students spent five or six hours taking exams that were supposed to last no more than two. And that was just one problem. “We have reports of students in tears, students getting physically sick, and in testing through April, many students found that they worked hours on their exam only to have the computer lose
all their work,” he explains. The union is calling on the leadership of the state Senate to allow a vote on Senate Bill 8301, which would end reliance on standardized testing in teacher evaluations. Korn says the bill would return control over evaluations to local school districts and teachers, allowing them to create procedures that help teachers grow professionally while meeting the unique needs of their students. “By de-emphasizing state standardized testing, teachers can get back to what parents and educators and students really want, and that’s a more healthy classroom environment,” he says. He says the bill would give districts the flexibility to curtail testing, especially in the earlier grades, and bar standardized test scores from becoming part of a student’s permanent record. Korn points out that the bill passed in the state Assembly with only one dissenting vote, and 54 of the 63 state senators, including a majority of Republicans,
Some students reported spending five to six hours on tests designed to last only two hours. (tjevans/Pixabay) support the measure. “Sen. (John) Flanagan, the majority leader, must bring this bill to the floor,” he adds. “The message

receiving an additional $1,000. “On behalf of OneFuture Coachella Valley and our regional partners, we would like to congratulate all the winners of the FAFSA Battle of the High Schools Completion Competition this year,” said Sheila Thornton, OneFuture CV president and CEO. “Since 2011, all three school districts, the OneFuture
Coachella Valley and its regional partners have been working diligently to increase completion of the FAFSA and state applications among local students. That rate has increased from 48% in 2011 to 70% in 2018. Completing the FAFSA application is the first step to going on to college, and students who complete it are four times more likely to attend college.” OneFuture CV’s regional
goal has been to reach 85% completion by 2018, as part of the Coachella Valley’s Regional Plan for College and Career Success. All of the schools being recognized were selected because they achieved the highest FAFSA and Dream Application completion rates in the valley and helped OneFuture CV take one step closer to reach its regional goal of 85% completion.
that the students, parents and educators are sending is, ‘Let us teach, let them learn, let the Senate vote.’” Korn adds that Gov.
Andrew Cuomo has indicated that he would support a more fair and meaningful system of teacher evaluations.
This year 70% of graduating high school seniors completed the FAFSA or California Student Aid applications by March 2, a three (3) percentage point increase over 2017. To put the accomplishment in perspective, if all students receive the minimum financial aid award package, Coachella Valley students would be eligible for an estimated $14.7 million in financial aid. “We congratulate all students for taking this important step in your pursuit
of a higher education,” said Ernie Rios, OneFuture CV vice president of College Success. “We also want to recognize and thank the counselors, teachers and high school administrators that helped students complete the FAFSA and California Student Aid applications. It is because of your assistance with the application process that more students have the opportunity to pursue a higher education. Congratulations to all the high schools. We are all very proud of you!”
with Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. On Wednesday, May 9th, the Tolerance Education Center hosted a child Holocaust Survivor, Robert Frimtzis. Robert was born in the small, peaceful town of Beltz, Moldova. The Jewish settlement in Beltz dates from the beginning of the 16th century. In 1921, the Jews composed 50.7% of the total population. At the age of 10, Robert’s town was destroyed by the Nazis. To evade Nazi capture, Robert and his parents escaped 3,000 miles eastward, to Tajikistan, where they experience hunger. His father was immediately drafted to the Russian army. At the age of 12, Robert quit school and got his first job as an electrician assistant. They lived in a mud house, the only one
in the area to have electricity thanks to Robert’s job. Robert made a promise to his mother to write a book narrating their spellbinding circumstances. In 2009 ‘From Tajikistan to the Moon’ was published. Robert escaped Soviet Antisemitism by crossing many borders illegally. At age 19 he arrived in America, where he earned a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degrees in electrical engineering (Robert still does not have a high school diploma). He worked at NASA with Neil Armstrong. He also contributed to the successes of the Surveyor unmanned lunar lander, defense satellites and the Gamma Ray Observatory spacecraft. This is a story of tragedy, survival and triumph of the human spirit, an inspiration overcome obstacles.

Shopping for a Wedding Gift? What to Know Now
By Desert Star Staff If your fridge is filled with save-the-dates and wedding invitations, you’re inevitably facing the daunting question: what to give? In taking a look at the couple’s registry, you may have been surprised by some of the items listed. While in the past, you probably only found traditional household items like linens and cookware, these days, you can expect to see the latest home technologies, too. From connected doorbells and thermostats, to smart showers, these are the items that many of today’s millennials would want, suggests a new study. Leading faucet manufacturer, Moen, commissioned a survey conducted online by Harris Poll in March 2018, which investigated what smart products would top the list when it comes to millennial (ages 18-34 at the time of the
survey) wedding registries, and how this tech-savvy generation appear to be reinventing the process of registering. The survey found that 42 percent of millennials would
want to include smart home products on their registry. Millennials are bucking several age-old gifting beliefs, and while traditionalists may find these new registry
customs strange, guests should consider selecting one of the high-tech items on a millennial couple’s list if they want their gift to stand out. StatePoint
Put More You into Your Wedding Day
Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff A wedding day is filled with symbolic tradition, from varied religious customs to the neverending circle reflected in the rings and the types of flowers accentuating the celebration. Even with all the traditional rituals to consider, nearly every bride and groom can find ways to give their special day some unique touches that reflect their personality and love. Music sets the mood for every wedding, and it’s an easy place to put your own spin on the celebration. Whether you forgo the traditional bridal march entirely or simply look for an arrangement that gives an updated twist to the classic version, let guests know this isn’t your average wedding by setting the festivities against a soundtrack that lets your true character shine. www.desertstarweekly.com
The wedding party is intended to be a collection of those nearest and dearest to the bride and groom, who help ensure the day goes off without a hitch and who lead fellow revelers in celebrating the start of the new couple’s life together. That being said, there’s no reason this group must be limited to women on her side and guys on his, or even that it’s limited to humans - a beloved pooch can make for an adorable ring-bearer, after all. Photography is an essential element of your big day, but think beyond the images you’ll capture throughout the wedding and reception. Photos lend a personal touch, no matter what your color scheme or theme. Integrate photos of the two of you at various stages of life, together as a couple and with loved ones (perhaps even some
you’re honoring in memoriam). You can display these at a table with the guest book, as part of the table centerpieces, or even on the gift table. Or take things digital and load all your images into a slide show set to music. Make favors meaningful. Forgo more common items like
bubbles and chocolate, and instead send a little of yourself home with your guests. Maybe it’s a memento from a place with special meaning to you both, or a bottle opener shaped like a bicycle to represent the way you met. Just think about the moments and things that define you as a couple and do some searching online. You’ll probably be surprised by how quickly the options pile up. Serve up a menu that shows guests more about your life together. Your loved ones can order basic beef or chicken anywhere. Instead, give them a glimpse into you. Make your main course the same food you enjoyed on your first date or during another monumental moment in your courtship. Or plan the entire menu around a region that you hold close to your heart. Weddings are filled with traditions, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put your own touches on the day for a special event filled with memories that are uniquely your own. HOROSCOPES ARIES
You will feel more impulsive than usual; more fiery, intelligent & more and more you will seek freedom of expression and freedom from the past which feels imprisoning from you. Daily chants and the repeating of Om...their sounds will break up any obstructions hindering you from moving swiftly forward. New patterns come forth. New self-identity and a new look, too!
TAURUS A new set of values comes forth, awakening you to areas of life never realized or seen before. Old attitudes from the past simply fall away. Taurus is a most material sign, a good thing at first. But there is the new “spiritual materialism manifesting. Where all that we say, do and have are offered for humanity’s well-being. New income based upon spiritual endeavors appears. You are to be future oriented, inventive and progressive.

CANCER Everything you held onto as stability shifts into a state of change. Daily life may feel disrupted; things, events, people, even your thinking may feel erratic. Plans will change. You will need to call upon great patience to sustain yourself. Know that new approaches now must be incorporated so that you once again feel in control. The Tibetan teacher tells us to “adapt to all that occurs. Adaptation frees us.
LEO You will express yourself in unusual and creative ways. A new level of creativity is awakening. Nothing will be like before. Everything will feel out of the ordinary. Relationships with children and lovers and your relationship to creativity will be surprising. Inhibitions fall away. And a greater understanding of others comes forth. You will feel playful, spontaneous. Be more eccentric. It’s more interesting.
in new rhythms and new archetypes. Allow yourself to perform unconventional tasks. Be inventive. Take up tai chi, yoga & chanting.
LIBRA Be as reliable a partner as you can be. When Uranus enters Taurus, you find relationships that have become tired and worn out will fall away. You begin to look at relationships differently. Do not allow feelings of limitation or rebelliousness to interfere with loving others. You want to break free from all restrictions. Both love & freedom can exist side by side. Be gentle, be kind & forgive always. These create the freedoms you seek.

we can know the truth of our adventures here on Earth. Some of us will recapture ancient theologies. Some will question all assumptions. Some will know that the unfoldment of the Soul is what gives direction. Some of us will travel to parts unknown and travel with the ancients. Everything will be bright, brilliant, abrupt, progressive and unexpected!
CAPRICORN Career changes come as a surprise. Unusual offers, too. Everything that defines a Capricorn in the world seems to shape shift. Caps love tradition. But Uranus lets tradition fall to the wayside so a new future can come forth. Look at what is occurring in Hawaii with the volcanoes. Earth’s inner fires burning the crust of the Earth. This “burning of the past has evolutionary purpose, allowing you to come forth in the world with both greater brilliance and higher purpose.
Something new takes its place. We are happier.
PISCES All of the past - habits, behaviors, things that hurt & traumatized us, all that we did to others unconsciously –these come to light and we approach them tentatively, at first. Then we stand at their very center and we change the outcomes. We visualize the right ways, the ways that promote Goodwill and forgiveness. Then all the elements that hurt us and others simply disappear into a cloud of safety and goodness. This occurs slowly yet surely, with precision and purity. AQUARIUS Friends and social acquaintances grow in surprising ways. You meet new people; unusual circumstances occur in groups. You might join a spiritual group of like-minded people. You always need freedom, nothing limiting you. Aquarians are unique, inventive and surprising. One day everything changes. What we thought we wanted isn’t there anymore.

‘Phantom Thread’ Now on DVD and Blu-ray
Daniel Day-Lewis, a phenomenal actor, has been nominated six times for Best Actor and has won three times for “My Left Foot,” “Lincoln” and “There Will Be Blood.” He made his first screen appearance in 1971 as a child in “Sunday, Bloody Sunday” in an uncredited role. Now, almost 50 years later, he has announced that “Phantom Thread” will be his final film role. We can only hope that he will change his mind, but if “Phantom Thread” marks the end of his remarkable career, he will be leaving on
an extremely high note. In 2007 director Paul Thomas Anderson worked with Day-Lewis on the film “There Will Be Blood.” They teamed up again this past year for the Oscar-nominated “Phantom Thread.” In the movie, set in 1950s London, Day-Lewis plays the role of Reynolds Woodcock, a highly respected fashion designer who creates gowns for the wealthy and the royal. He has never married and lives and works with his spinster sister and business partner, Cyril (Lesley Manville) who is
BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
very protective of her brother. As the film begins, Reynolds meets Alma (Vicky Krieps), a pretty young waitress, over breakfast. While she is taking his order, he invites her to dine with him that evening. Later when they return to his home and studio, he asks her to undress, but the encounter is not what you may expect. Moments later his sister Cyril is there with notebook and pen to take down her measurements. She tells Alma she has the perfect figure to model his designs. Alma is instantly smitten with this attractive, cultured middle-aged designer, but for Woodcock, his life is his work. He also likes quiet over breakfast at home and scolds Alma when she crunches her
toast too loudly in the morning. He requires silence to plan out his work day ahead. Eventually, Alma realizes that getting too close to the very rigid Woodcock may be ‘almost’ impossible. However, she is resourceful and extremely proud and protective of his designs. In fact, it is her devotion not only to him but to his creative prowess that finally draws him closer to her. But will this relationship ever get off the ground? Not only is he devoted to his craft, but he also adores his late mother’s memory and keeps a lock of her hair in his pocket, close to his heart. How Alma handles all of this is often sweet and devoted, sometimes sly and once in awhile a bit dangerous and devious as well.
Throughout this darkly quirky romantic comedy, you are engaged by the unique relationship between Woodcock and Alma, even if you doubt the two of them ever will be involved, at least to one another. The look and feel of London in the 50s adds a nostalgic patina to this strange romantic tale. You also get caught up in Woodcock’s designs (created for the film by costume designer Mark Bridges) as they are modeled throughout “Phantom Thread.” In fact, one of the featurettes in the DVD-Blu-ray showcases the gowns seen in the movie. “Phantom Thread” is rated R for language and has a running time of 2 hours, 10 minutes.

Matzner has also been honored with the Horatio Alger Award which is awarded to very few Distinguished Americans. Melissa Manchester came on stage and sang many hits from her albums and favorite songwriters. She May 16, 2018
told a few stories about her life and career, and when she started to sing a song, the audience would know the song and clap. Some of the songs were Chances Are, and For My Gal and Me, Love is Just Around the Corner, Night and Day, They Say its Wonderful and More. Singing in front of the Symphony Orchestra is a sound all unto itself. Manchester has this beautiful voice that lends
importance to every song. She is a songwriter as well and has received many awards for her songs and has recorded many albums. The audience would clap loudly after each song, and you could hear the Ahhhs as they remembered and loved these timeless songs. After her performance, Manchester went out into the lobby to sign autographs and pose for pictures with her many fans.

Sheldon Epps’ “Blues in the Night” Lights Up The Stage at The Wallis Are you ready for an evening of being treated to some of the most famous blues songs ever written? Would you like to take a musical journey through the love lives of three characters brought to life by amazingly talented women? How about being treated to highly trained legit voices belting out songs of love and romance, and the ensuing disappointments, yearning, passion, sadness, loneliness, and heartbreak? If your answer is “yes,“ then don’t miss the Tony and Olivier Award-nominated musical “Blues in the Night,” on stage at The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. This exciting musical revue was conceived and brilliantly directed by Sheldon Epps, with original vocal arrangement and musical direction by Chapman Roberts, and orchestrations and additional vocal arrangements by Sy Johnson, tied together by Music Director Abdul Hamid Royal. The love stories of these characters are told through songs, which takes us on an emotional roller coaster ride through the lives of The Lady from the Road (Yvette Cason,) The Woman of the World (Paulette Ivory,) and The Girl with the Date (Bryce Charles). John Iacovelli’s excellent Scenic Design created a small room for each of them who live in a rundown Chicago hotel,
the outside of the building illuminated with signs that read “Jazz,” “Hotel” and “Bar.” Jared A. Sayeg’s superb lighting design accents the opening scene with a colorful spotlight on each of the women in their respective rooms. They are frozen in silhouette assuming graceful poses reminiscent of old photos from the 1920’s and 30’s. Epps uses this visually stunning theatrical device throughout the production punctuating the opening and closing of a number with a different stilled look. Cason’s character (“The Lady”) is the quintessential red-hot momma and boy can she sing. She resides in a small room with a bed and a trunk where she keeps her cherished possessions, including an assortment of nightgowns, dresses, hats, and colorful outlandish outfits designed by costume designer Dana Rebecca Woods. Her character is the storyteller and she breaks the fourth wall frequently to present the narrative and to play with the audience. She has the best laugh lines such as “I’m not getting older – I’m just moving slower.” Cason blasts out the hilarious Leola and Wesley Wilson’s “Take Me For a Buggy Ride,” a song loaded with sexual metaphors. But the showstopper is her rendition of Andy Razaf and Wesley Wilson’s “Kitchen

Man.” Dressed in a flamboyant costume, a matching crazy hat, and carrying a parasol, which she occasionally uses as a phallic symbol, Cason turns food into a variety of sexual acts and I promise you you’ll never look at a hot dog in quite the same way again. She also sings Jimmy Davis, Jimmy Sherman and Roger “Ram” Ramierz’s “Lover Man” in three-part harmony with “The Girl” and “The Woman,” which is how many of the songs are sung, including Bessie Smith’s “Blue Blues,” the first number at the top of the show. Throughout the performance, Cason’s presence is electric and the pivotal character around which the others rotate. Paulette Ivory’s character (“The Woman,”) has had her share of heartbreak and sexual encounters. She drowns out her sorrows by taking to the bottle as she sings Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life,” a memory of past loves. No shrinking violet, she also belts out Alberta Hunter’s sexy “Rough and Ready Man.” The youngest member of the trio is Bryce Charles (“The Girl”). She’s still somewhat enthusiastic, as life hasn’t quite beaten her down yet. We see
the transition in her emotional life when she goes from “Mack Gordon and Henry Revel’s “I’ve Got A Date With A Dream,” to her heartbreaking rendition of Ann Ronell’s “Willow Weep For Me.” Filled with visceral emotion, don’t be surprised if you get a little lump in your throat and a tear in your eye. Two other outstanding songs include, Jimmy Cox’s “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out,” sung by the ensemble, and Bessie Smith’s “Wasted Life Blues,” sung by “The Lady.” Rounding out the cast is Chester Gregory as The Man in the Saloon. He is a saloon singer and kind of a wise guy. Gregory gets his share of song and dance moments with such pieces as Duke Ellington and Mack David’s “I’m Just a Lucky So-and So,” and Ida Cox’s “Wild Women Don’t Have the Blues”. He is somewhat like a one-man Greek chorus as he observes and musically reports on the emotional temperature of the women with lines like “These women are on the edge.” He also does a nice job with Bessie Smith’s “Baby Doll,” and Johnny Mercer, Gordon Jenkins, and Bernard Hanighen’s “When A Woman
Loves A Man and “Am I blue”. Additional members of the superb technical team include, Cricket S. Myers’ on Sound Design and the excellent five-piece orchestra. Under the direction of pianist Lanny Hartley, the musicians are: Kevin O’Neal on Bass, Randall Willis and Louis Van Taylor on Reeds, Lance Lee on Percussion and Fernando Pullum on Trumpet. This sensational evening ended with a foot stomping reprise of Willard Robinson’s “Four Walls (And One Dirty Window) Blues.” The cheering audience sprang to their feet and clapped along in rhythm. The songs may be about the blues, but be rest assured that you will leave The Wallis smiling and humming one of the tunes. U2 finds riches and renewal via ‘eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour’ in Las Vegas
Photo credit : Danny North If you caught U2’s The Joshua Tree Tour 2017, you weren’t alone. After all, the stadium-minded extravaganza featuring a complete performance of their 1987 masterwork grossed $316 million while selling 2.71 million tickets. This writer caught two of the 51 shows (the tour opener in Vancouver and their final U.S. date, a late September gig in San Diego featuring Beck as the opener) and they were both impressive. Exactly one year after seeing U2 perform the kick-off to their previous tour in British Columbia, I found myself in Las Vegas at the decidedly more intimate T-Mobile Arena catching the sixth show of their eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour on a beautiful Saturday night (May 12, 2018). This time around, U2 has opted out of performing at gigantic stadiums and is only playing smaller arenas en route to delivering an experience very different than what fans of the Irish quartet got last time around. Essentially, the new tour is a continuation and companion to U2’s Innocence + Experience Tour in support of 2014’s Songs of Innocence LP that wrapped up in December 2015. Like the 2015 tour, the eXPERIENCE +
iNNOCENCE Tour features an impressive projection screen that runs the length of the floor bringing visual elements and band mates Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. as close as possible to concertgoers in every part of the arena. The screen also is able to accommodate members of U2 actually performing and moving inside the high-def marvel — even interacting with animated images and those of their fellow bandmates. Amazing. All of the planning, 21st century technology and great sound system in the world wouldn’t mean a thing if U2 couldn’t deliver artistically. A long-time fan of U2 (I first caught the band at the US Festival in May 1983 and have seen them dozens of times since), the band delivered a powerful and deeply affecting 130-minute concert event on May 12. Those wanting a nostalgic-centered show of hits will only be partially satisfied; about a half of the songs offered up in Las Vegas came from the band’s two most recent albums (2014’s Songs of Innocence and 2017’s Songs of Experience). And while there were certainly staples of the band’s four-decade discography
offered up (including “I Will Follow,” “Beautiful Day,” “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “One”), there was a strong focus on deeper cuts from the past as well as recent gems that provided a magical experience for die hard fans. It was simply spellbinding to watch the band soar through “Acrobat,” a nugget from Achtung Baby never before played live by the band until this tour’s opening on May 2. “Staring at the Sun” — offered up during an acoustic set — was so beautiful and I marveled that the song hadn’t been featured in a U2 set since 2001. The consequence of this calculated focus on deeper and newer cuts were longtime favorites such as “With or Without You,” “Bullet the Blue Sky” and “Where the Streets Have No Name” were nowhere to be found. But there was such power in the set that such omissions didn’t matter; in fact, they likely enhanced this night. Special moments came early and continued through the fast-moving two-part concert. Bono opened the show, alone on the long ramp as he sang “Love Is All We Have Left,” a foreshadowing of the wideranging themes of love, loss, family, faith and political turmoil that defined so much of the

lyrical content to come. The Edge’s guitar playing continues to astound, especially when heard in an expansive concert setting; his first major solo during “Lights Of Home” bolstered that song to be sure. And even his driving rhythm work was a wonder, notably on early favorites such as “I Will Follow” and “Gloria,” the latter featuring his use of both ringing harmonics and even pounding on the guitar body for effect before unleashing another otherworldly lead foray. And, never to be overlooked, the signature drive of Clayton’s driving bass guitar and Mullen Jr.’s solid drumming provided for nuanced and potent versions of the material all night. The house lights up, the band roared through “Beautiful Day.” Bono and The Edge took the lead in interacting with the video and animated images on the screen, which itself was
production. All four members performed, lined up on the ramp an equal distance apart. The subsequent performance of a newer song, “Raised By Wolves,” got a huge unprompted boost when a good share of the audience would sing the “Raised By Wolves” refrain. And capping up the mighty run, U2 leveled the arena with a rocking version of “Until the End of the World.” The second half of the concert was just as aweinspiring, featuring a highoctane opening punch with “Elevation” and “Vertigo.” An acoustic-styled set presented on the second stage included “Desire,” the aforementioned “Acrobat,” lovely “You’re The Best Thing About Me” and “Staring at the Sun.” The band’s focus then turned and remained focused on the world stage and current events, including troubling

The use of the screen (which could be raised and lowered artfully) and ramp never negatively impacted the power of the set; a second focusing on Bono’s youth in Dublin was empowered by paintings and old movies; the performance of “Iris (Hold Me Close),” a song for Bono’s late mother, was especially poignant. Leading up to the song, Bono noted: “A story about a boy and his search for his mother...a household that never mentioned her name; her name was Iris.” Bono’s weighty vocals, Edge’s shimmering guitar and sublime harmonies added up to one of the most special offerings of the concert. “Sunday Bloody Sunday” also benefited from the stage
images of hate groups such as the KKK and Nazis marching in American streets. Some of the disturbing images were then offset by those seeking to fight back and finally a black & white image of Martin Luther King Jr. as the band led the audience through a spirited version of “Pride (In the Name of Love).” U2 continued to make points geared toward a more inclusive America, women’s rights and the welcoming of undocumented refugees via a run of songs that included a fiery “American Soul” (complete with Bono using a bullhorn) and an inspired “One.” The night ended with a gorgeous “13 (There Is A Light),” with Bono at the far end of the arena from his band mates before they came together to end a very special night.

Photo by Pat Karuse By Pamela Price Friends of Phyllis Eisenberg gathered at El Paseo’s Anatolian Rugs in Palm Desert on May 11th to say farewell as this favorite desert snowbird as she wrapped up another season in the desert. Serdar Taken, the owner of one of El Paseo’s newest shops, which is devoted to antique oriental rugs from around the world, was an unexpected choice for this late afternoon tea. Arriving guests were
impressed when they entered this fascinating gallery surrounded by lavish, ornate hand woven rugs and kilims, some dating to the 18th century. “The designs dazzle the eye,” said Chris Clemens, from a Central Anatolian runner to Kula and Kurdish rugs revealing intricate, classic designs symbolizing ancient secrets. Marcia Argust, director of the campaign, said more than 180 infrastructure groups, including architects, electricians, engineers and construction workers, have signed on to a letter
calling for Congress to put their members to work on maintenance and repairs. “We’re talking about historic structures, buildings, roads, bridges, trails, campgrounds, waterfronts, recreation facilities,” Argust said. A Pew-commissioned analysis found that addressing the maintenance backlog facing the National Park Service would create or support more than 9,800 jobs in New York State alone. Vrba pointed out that Dutchess County is home to the estate of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who brought the country through
the Great Depression and World War II, and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who played a key role in development of the universal Declaration of Human Rights. “It’s so relevant today to what’s going on in our country that we need to see where we were,” Vrba said; “and if we don’t continue to maintain and keep these places open, all that valuable knowledge is going to be lost.” Congressional lawmakers are considering several bills to address deferred maintenance in the national parks. There are two dozen National Park Service sites in the Empire State, drawing more than 19 million visitors a year and generating more than $700 million in local spending in 2017 alone. But

According to Mary Kay Vrba, president of Dutchess County Tourism, from Niagara Falls to the Statue of Liberty, maintaining national parks in New York means preserving not only their economic value but critical pieces of our national heritage as well. “This history that’s here

Groups Push for National Park Investment on Infrastructure Week By Desert Star Staff YOSEMITE, Calif. — This week is national Infrastructure Week, and a coalition of business, conservation and veteran’s groups are calling for a dedicated funding stream to address the $11 billion backlog of deferred maintenance at our national parks. The money is needed to repair not just roads and trails, but things such as staff buildings, visitor centers, sewage systems, water lines, power lines, docks and more. Carolyn Cavecche, president and CEO of the Orange County Taxpayers Association, said national parks benefit everyone and should be prioritized before costs jump even further. “The more you put off paying to fix something, the more expensive it gets,” Cavecche said. “And if
we don’t focus on taking care of our national parks right now, then we’re going to be in an even bigger crisis down the road.” California is home to 27 national parks, monuments and historic sites that have $1.8 billion in deferred maintenance. They include Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon and Joshua Tree national parks, as well as smaller sites such as Muir Woods, Devil’s Postpile and the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument. Marcia Argust, director of the Restore America’s Parks Campaign with Pew Charitable Trusts, said returning the parks to tip-top shape would be good for the environment and the economy. “A Pew-commissioned analysis found that if the maintenance backlog facing
Yosemite National Park had a backlog of more than $583 million worth of deferred maintenance as of 2017. (Schick/Morguefile) the National Park Service was fully addressed, over 110,000 jobs could be created or supported nationwide,” Argust said; “including more than 16,000 jobs in California alone.”
More than 180 infrastructure groups have signed a letter to Congress asking for more investment in national parks. Their members include professionals in
the fields of construction, engineering and architecture. Support for this reporting was provided by The Pew Charitable Trusts.

Bolton wants all of North Korea’s nukes shipped to US By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump’s national security adviser wants North Korea to ship all of its nuclear weapons to a US lab in Tennessee, to make sure Kim Jong-un follows through on his promise to dismantle the program. North Korea’s nuclear weapons should be dismantled and sent to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee if Kim wants to see a relaxation of sanctions, John Bolton said during an interview on ABC’s ‘This Week’ on Sunday. “I think the implementation of this decision means getting rid of all the nuclear weapons, dismantling them, taking them to Oak Ridge”, said Bolton. “It means getting rid of the uranium enrichment and plutonium processing capabilities. It means addressing the ballistic missile issue. A lot of things like that.” Korean state media has said the country will openly dismantle its nuclear test site around May 23-25, with journalists from both
Pyongyang and the US invited to cover the event. Bolton didn’t specify whether he expects the nuclear weapons to eventually be stored at Oak Ridge National Laboratory where the US Department of Energy operates a research lab and a nuclear weapons complex - or the nearby Y-12 National Security Complex, normally tasked with nuclear weapons production. The Y-12 facility is where equipment and documents from Libya’s nuclear program were stored after Colonel Muammar Gaddafi made the decision to abandon nuclear weapons push in 2003. He was overthrown and killed in 2011 by NATO-backed rebels. With less than a month left before the hugely-anticipated talks between Trump and the North Korean leader in Singapore, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo implied on Sunday that Washington will have to assure North Korea it won’t seek to undermine Kim Jong-un. Pompeo told ‘Fox News Sunday’ that any deal paving
the way for a nuclear-free Korean peninsula will have to include certain US safeguards reassuring Kim he won’t become a target of yet another regime change attempt. “We will have to provide security assurances to be sure. This has been the trade-off that has been pending for 25 years,” Pompeo said, without specifying any instruments such assurances would be ironclad. Just last week, Trump pulled the US out of the 2015 UN-backed nuclear
deal with Iran, also signed by China, Russia, the UK, France and Germany. The JCPOA provided Iran relief from UN-imposed sanctions in return for curbing its uranium enrichment program and granting access to inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Despite the IAEA certifying that Iran was fully complying with the terms of the agreement, the Trump administration unilaterally withdrew from what he termed the “worst deal ever.”
The US has since reimposed a slew of sanctions on Tehran and threatened its European allies, as well as any other countries seeking to continue doing business with Iran. While Paris, London, Berlin, Moscow and Beijing have raised questions about US credibility in any international deals going forward, neither Seoul nor Pyongyang appear very concerned as the two Koreas seek closer ties independent of the US.
“The State of Washington is saying this terminal should not be built here because it has too many harmful impacts,” she says. “That is a focused decision based on a pretty lengthy and detailed environmental review.” Washington state has asked the federal court to wait until state court proceedings have run their course before making a ruling. In its denial last year, the Washington Department of Ecology said the project came with too many unavoidable harms, such as increased air pollution, cancer risks to the local community and hazardous rail traffic. At full operation, the agency found the terminal would emit nearly 40,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide a year, the equivalent of adding 8,300 cars to the road before any of the coal is burned. Utah-based Lighthouse Resources, which is behind the $680 million project
and brought the suit against Washington state in January, alleges the state is discriminating against coal. Boyles says this company and the states that filed the brief have made Washington state’s decision out to be a conspiracy against coal. “But because you have a bad idea and propose a bad and harmful project doesn’t mean everyone just says yes,” she adds. “I mean, the state has looked at this and said, ‘That is not the vision for our state, that is not what the community wants, and that’s not what we’re going to approve.’ Those are processes and decisions that states make all the time.” The terminal would have shipped up to 44 million tons of coal a year to Asian markets. Boyles says motions in front of the federal court by Washington state to dismiss some of the claims could be heard this month.

According to the Riverside County Weights and Measures, if a machine is faulty the gas station should shut the pump down immediately. The deputy commissioner of the county office, Michele Tracy said, “Pumps are not to move as far as the register or digital display unless
activated by the customer other than to return to zero.” Ramirez said she returned about five hours later to see if the pump was still in service and it was, “I thought I would drive by and see if there was an out of order sign but there was still no out of order sign.” The owner of the gas station said he was not aware of the problem with the pump until KMIR News brought up the issue, he said he will keep pump nine out of service until an inspector checks it. 6 States Join Fray as Backers Attempt to Revive Wash Coal Terminal
An Environmental Impact Statement from the Washington State Department of Ecology says a proposed coal terminal would require 16 more trains per day. (Darin Moulton/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff LONGVIEW, Wash. – Six states have joined the battle over a massive coal export terminal proposed in Washington state. The Millennium Bulk Terminal in Longview would have been the largest in the country but
was denied several key permits by state officials last year. Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, Utah, South Dakota and Nebraska have filed an joint amicus brief in federal court, saying the rejections were overly broad and could affect other commodities.
Kristen Boyles, an attorney with Earthjustice representing environmental groups intervening on Washington’s behalf, says the state’s decision was based on the particulars of the Millennium project, and not some wider denial of coal or commerce.

Meal Shaming, Denying Food to Students Spurs MA Lawmakers
Some lower-income students would rather skip lunch than go to the cafeteria and be lectured or denied a hot meal because their parents owe the school money.
By Desert Star Staff BOSTON – A cold sandwich is what students may get instead of the hot lunch they wanted at some Massachusetts public schools. They often are humiliated, sometimes to tears, when denied their lunch, and some are even confronted about their parents’ debt by cafeteria workers. State Sen. Cynthia Creem, D-Newton, and Rep. Andres Vargas, D-Haverhill, have filed a bill to change this practice. Their concerns stem from a report by the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute which found that students without money in hand can end up hungry the whole day. Patricia Baker, a senior policy analyst at the institute, says families often get into debt unwittingly, not knowing that they are in fact eligible for free school meals. “The children end up
getting a cheese sandwich, or ‘sun-butter’ sandwich, which can be very humiliating for these children, who often are teased by peers or so embarrassed they simply don’t eat the sandwich,” she says. Besides swapping hot lunches for sandwiches, the report says punishments schools use to collect unpaid meal debt include taking away extracurricular activities, denying report cards and withholding graduation caps and gowns. A joint legislative hearing on the bill, S.2390, is today from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. in Room B1 at the State Capitol. Baker says the bill tries to elevate the problem to an adult discussion instead of using students as pawns. She adds the legislation would require districts to talk directly to parents and not allow students to be punished for meal debt,

(Wokandapix/Pixabay) and also be proactive and help families get benefits that trigger free-meal status. “It would also require school districts that have a high percentage of economically
disadvantaged children to apply for a federal option to give all the children in that school, or school district, free school meals,” she adds. The bill’s sponsors say a
lack of statewide policy puts kids in harm’s way, leaves teachers struggling to feed hungry students and cafeteria workers in tough positions with little or no guidance.
United Airlines announces new direct flight from PS
KMIR News Staff United Airlines announced today that its seasonal service out of Palm Springs International Airport will now include direct flights to Newark, New Jersey. The move is part of a major expansion of destinations out of the airline’s East Coast hubs in New York/
Newark and WashingtonDulles, which included replacing the connections between Palm Springs and Newark with direct flights. From Dec. 19 though March 30, 2019, one flight a day will be offered on a 119-seat Airbus 319, which will depart from Palm Springs in the evening
and arrive in Newark in the early morning. Typically, flights between Palm Springs and Newark can only be completed through a connection, but United expanded service out of New York/Newark to 15 destinations, as well as adding the Palm Springs flight and a nonstop seasonal
flight to Key West, Florida. “We approached these schedule adjustments with our customers in mind, knowing that we wanted to create a schedule that offers customers beginning their travel in the New York City area convenient flights to many of the business and leisure destinations they frequent the most,” said Ankit Gupta, United’s Domestic Network vice president. City Manager David Ready called the flight addition “a great compliment” to Palm Springs as a destination. “The city of Palm Springs is delighted that United Airlines continues to recognize the desire for more flights to and from Palm Springs to the East Coast,” he said. Tax revenue from the cannabis industry totaled $60.9 million since January 1, 2018, which includes state cultivation, excise and sales taxes. It does not include local tax revenue collected by cities or counties. In November 2016, California voters approved Proposition 64, the Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act. Beginning on January 1, 2018, two new cannabis taxes went into effect: a cultivation tax on all harvested cannabis that enters the commercial market and a 15 percent excise tax on the purchase of cannabis
and cannabis products. In addition, cannabis and cannabis products are subject to state and local sales tax at the time of retail sale. California’s excise tax
on cannabis generated $32 million in revenue for the first quarter of calendar year 2018. The cultivation tax generated $1.6 million, and the sales tax generated $27.3 million in
revenue. Medicinal cannabis is exempt from sales tax if the purchaser holds a valid Medical Marijuana Identification card. Source: KMIR

The site also said he recently suffered a heart attack. The palace statement said: “This is a deeply personal moment for Ms. Markle in the days before her wedding. She and Prince Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Mr. Markle in this difficult situation.”

Palm Canyon Theatre revival of the musical “Gypsy” is a glittering triumph
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) The American musical has gone through many iterations, and changes in structure and content over the last one hundred years. In the 1940’s the American musical created a unique American art form – known as the ‘book musical’ which combined the acting, singing, and a narrative storyline resulting in a blended, linear, modern, vernacular, script and a presentation style that had reigned supreme for almost 75 years. When “Oklahoma”, the first book musical burst on the stage, it blew everyone away with the new performing style that we still see today… until “Hamilton”, that is. But that’s another review for another day. In 1959 the creative and most successful musical writing team of Rodgers and Hammerstein we’re gathering the best of Broadway writers, directors, choreographers, to produce a musical about the early days of show business on Broadway and the various touring “road show” companies that were then in vogue. Initially, no one wanted to sign on to a new show called “Gypsy: A Musical Fable”. Ultimately, the musical did come together under the music of Jule Styne, the lyrics of Stephen Sondheim, and the libretto written by Arthur Laurents going on to have six different revivals of touring companies world-wide over the years. “Gypsy”, would win tons of Tony Awards, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle Awards, and Obies, and Academy Awards for the movie version. The musical, is now considered to be the gold standard when it comes to structure in creating the American musical play. It’s pure musical theatre at its best with songs that resonate with millions of audiences that are funny, poignant, uplifting, and flat out entertaining. The Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) has a successful track record of presenting quality performances, colorful sets, gorgeous costumes, and talented singers and actors for over 20 years. “Gypsy”, is directed and choreographed by Derik Shopinski, who brings his many theatrical skills to the production. Boasting a cast of 30 performers, Shopinski, who also costumed the production along with his team of costume magicians that include: Kathryn Ferguson, Virginia Sulick, and Char Childs, and an army of seamstresses that fill the stage with colorful and glittering costumes that are a visual feast for the eyes. The story of Gypsy Rose Lee, one of the country’s most famous striptease artists, is loosely based on Ms. Lee’s www.desertstarweekly.com
1957 memoirs and on focuses on Gypsy’s quintessential Show Biz stage mother Mama Rose Hovick played by a sensational Jaci Davis, in a tour de force star turn. Rose is determined to raise her two daughters June (Allegra Angelo) and Louise (Elizabeth Schmelling) to become performers on the road trip vaudeville circuits and then to Broadway. She lives vicariously in show business through June and Louise. One day, while attending auditions for a local comic who is looking for kid acts to join his troupe, Rose meets salesman Herbie (Tom Warrick). Herbie is intrigued by Rose’s energy and force nature personality. Rose quickly recruits him into becoming the Act’s manager. From this point we follow the kids through songs and skits during their growing years; even into their late teens. Regardless, the act always performs the same – as kid performers despite their obvious older ages. To borrow the song lyric from “Damn Yankees” “Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets”; applies to the demands of Mama Rose when it comes to June and Louise and the Act, making Herbie’s job as Manager, all the more difficult when trying to book a kid’s show performed by teen agers. In Act Two, June has eloped with Tulsa (Mat Tucker), (a male dancer from the act), leaving Rose devastated and heart broken. June, as the baby in the act was always Rose’s favorite. Now she must figure out their next move. In the meantime, Herbie, inadvertently books the act into a Burlesque house, setting off Rose and putting Herbie and Rose at odds on what to do about the act and about their own future plans as a married couple. Louise, settles the issue by declaring that she will honor the booking and go on stage herself. After much discussion Rose agrees to allow Louise to perform… but with no stripping. “Remember, you’re a lady dancing on a stage.” This launches the career of Gypsy Rose Lee who goes on to stardom at Minsky’s on Broadway in New York City, becoming a star and a celebrity in the process. The real beauty of this stellar production lies in the performances of the entire cast. But the heavy lifting by the principal performers gives this splendid production an extra boost and it’s exciting to watch. Jaci Davis as Rose, brings down the house in the terrific musical number called “Rose’s Turn”. It’s an explosive, high octane performance riff on driving out Rose’s jealousy demons and her life’s disappointments. Louise, now known as Gypsy Rose Lee, is brilliantly portrayed by Elizabeth Schmelling. From shy, introverted Louise, Ms. Schmelling turns Gypsy into an icon of American show business.
Her stage chemistry with Rose and her sister Baby June is palpable. June, vivaciously played by Allegra Angelo shines in the musical numbers when June and Louise talk about the day Rose and Herbie tie the knot, in a sweetly sung, two-part harmony number called “If Mama Was Married”. There’s a lot of good work taking place on the PCT stage in this production. There are so many wonderful songs and numbers that it’s impossible to leave the theatre without humming, at least some of the 17 terrific songs, most of which became platinum in the 60’s Tom Warrick as Herbie, one of the Valley’s finest character actors, delivers a solid, sympathetic performance as the love interest of Rose. With a cast of 30 performers it’s difficult to list everyone, but there always standouts, and they include: The Specialty Act of strippers consisting of Morgana Corelli as Mezzepa, Elissa Landi as Tessie Tura, and Denise Carey as Electra. Mat Tucker as dancer Tulsa, Alan Berry as theatre cigar smoking producer Weber, Natalia Fernandez as loyal Agnes, Frank Catale as Uncle Jocko. If not a first, then it’s a rarely seen on stage performance by
Photo by Paul Hayashi Palm Canyon Theatre Founding Director, Dr. William Layne as Pop, Rose’s father. Special kudos also go the youngsters who portray the kid actors. They help in making the audience harken back to their own childhood experiences in school plays when some were first bitten by the acting bug. “Gypsy” is a show that resonates with everyone on some level. The musical accompaniment is under the baton of Musical
Director and pianist Steven Smith, with Larry Holloway on Bass, and David Bronson on Drums. The Set Design and Lighting Designers J.W. Layne and Kay Van Zandt provide the right amount of mood lighting that does justice to the wonderful costumes of director Shopinski and his staff. “Gypsy: A Musical Fable” performs at the Palm Canyon Theatre and runs through May 20, 2018. Don’t Miss It!.
