Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Arthur Lyons Noir Film Festival was held at the Camelot Theatre on May 12th through May 15th. This was the 17th edition of the Film Noir that people love. Restored and very rare films from yesteryear bring memories to people that saw them as teens or young adults back in the 40s and 50s.

Some of the films are still in the original version of black and white. Many were considered B films with a dark side. A lot of these films starred great actresses in a different type of role that they were known for. The Film Noir Festival is also known for bringing in actors and actresses who were in the films shown. The age of

The Noir Festival gives fans an opportunity to see their favorite actors like George Raft in, Red Light, The Accused with Loretta Young and Robert Cummings and one of my favorites, James Cagney in, White Heat. Many of these rare films are not on DVD and are not shown on TV. They are being restored for future generations to enjoy. These are considerable stories along with great acting. We hope they continue to try to restore these old film gems from long ago.

Loved ones with Dementia? 5 Steps to Take

financial acumen and led them to feel that everything was okay. During the last two years under his administration of her money, he lost 2/3rd of her estate but made lots of money for himself. For this reason, I chose to help those who may not be as informed, by writing articles and being an advisory for you. As an advisor dedicated to help those with financial planning, I feel that it is imperative that your financial advisor know the signs of dementia and know how to assist to you and client’s with excellent advice. Here are five steps you can take to be prepared for the coming age-wave: 1. Select advisors who know the basics about dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Understand the fundamentals and the red flags yourself. Be willing to get permission to meet with each of them personally. Your advisor should be a trusted member of your family and a voice of reason to help all those involved and be accessible to answer any questions when needed. 2. Obtain a special, institution-specific privacy waiver, so that you have your loved one’s permission to speak with their advisors and enable you to protect all of their interests and care. Any client with dementia will ultimately lose the capacity for safe financial and healthcare decisions. Do this for your loved one when they reach a specific landmark birthday,

such as 70, or when they retire. Don’t wait until they show obvious signs of impairment; it may be too late at that point to get a legally valid signature on such a document. 3. Keep close ties. Set up regular meetings. Start at the first time you learn a loved one’s dementia or when you observe signs of it yourself. A transition of power is going to be necessary and will be driven by the progress of the disease. If the legal paperwork allowing a family member or other to take charge is in place, ask to see it so everyone is on the same page. These meetings will help you facilitate the transition and involve your loved one for as long as possible. It will also educate you with the information to make the best decisions for them. 4. Create a resource list. Get some basic information about what resources exist in your community (or online) to help with the changes your loved one’s life. The Alzheimer’s Association, for example is a worldwide online resource for families and has a great deal of educational material as well as support groups for families. Local helpful organizations exist as well. Become familiar with some of them, who will provide lists, booklets or other materials to help you contemplate and deal with future decisions. 5. Watch for abuse. Learn about financial elder abuse, which is a looming risk for aging adults, whether they have cognitive impairment or not,

it will protect them from con artists, thieves and scammers. New scams are created every day. Do thorough background checks on all advisors, caretakers, and facilities they may use. Make sure their licenses are in good standing and that they have professional insurance. Check online sites like www.ripoff.com. You can make a difference if you are willing to pay attention, ask the right questions and know how to make a useful report to Adult Protective Services. You won’t be prosecuted for

making a mistake if you have reasonable suspicion of abuse. Think proactively about protecting you and your loved ones from potentially devastating abuse.

under-insuring the unit. With the same company insuring association and member, there is no ‘finger pointing’ as to which carrier is responsible. Also, an owner carries the clout of the HOA when they call the agency.” Michael Berg (Berg Insurance Agency), agreed: “The HOA’s agent would know the HOA policy and could provide a personal policy corresponding with the HOA policy coverage. In the event of a loss, the agent representing both parties can be liaison between the HOA carrier and the unit owner carrier. However, even when the HOA policy and the personal lines policy are with the same carrier, this doesn’t mean that a loss will be settled more in favor or one party or another. The loss is settled per the contract.” Timothy Cline (Cline Insurance Agency), differed: ”It might not be better to have a single adjuster coordinating both policies, because the individual owner has no one in their corner representing their interests. Also, the quality of HO6 policies can vary wildly from carrier to carrier. Carriers might have excellent HOA

policies but lousy HO6 policies. At least 50% of carriers writing master policies in California do not offer HO6 policies. Unit owners should seek the best HO6 policy, competitively priced and suiting their specific needs, from a knowledgeable agent.” Joel Meskin (McGowan Program Administrators) said: “Although you can get the HO-6 on-line, be very wary, because you may not know what the master policy covers and what the HO-6 should cover. The master policy may be an ‘all-in’ policy, a ‘bare walls’ policy or an ‘original specification’ policy. Find out if the unit is subject to FHA financing and requires deferent coverage. Determine if your association documents have requirements regarding responsibility for deductibles, which may dove-tail into the ‘loss assessment’ coverage from the HO-6 carrier. You may be able to purchase larger loss assessment coverage for a very small amount.” Carol Fulton (Labarre/ Oksnee Insurance Agency) responded: “Several carriers only write association policies, but they may be the best for

the association’s insurance needs. The HO6 carrier should be ‘A’ rated and California admitted. Many good carriers issue personal insurance. The agent writing the association’s insurance might be able to give unit owners guidance.” Readers, as you can see, HO6 policies are a good idea, but there are a number of factors to consider. Consult an insurance agent committed to the common interest community housing sector, hopefully one who has CAI’s “CIRMS” credential. Make sure you know what the HOA insurance will not cover. Thanks for your question (and thanks insurance experts), Kelly

HOA Homefront - Individual Insurance Policies By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL

Dear Kelly, When it comes to an owner choosing an insurance company for condominium insurance for the inside of the condo, would the best course be to choose the same company the association uses for the buildings and common area, or to choose a different company? The individual condominium unit insurance policy is normally referred to as “HO6” or “personal lines” policy coverage. Here are excerpts of their responses. Scott Litman, of the Scott Litman Insurance Agency, said: “I recommend owners have their policy with the HOA’s agent. Most agents insuring individual units do not read the CC&Rs, resulting in over-insuring or

Convenience Stores May Stop Accepting EBT/SNAP Benefits By Desert Star Staff Your local convenience story may no longer accept cards for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program if a new rule proposed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture goes into effect. Opponents expect the matter to come up at a hearing on the SNAP program today in the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture. The rule says if 15 percent or more of a store’s profits come from hot foods, the store will not be allowed to accept SNAP’s Electronic Benefit Transfer cards. Jawad Ursani, who owns five convenience stores in Los Angeles, says 80 to 90 percent of 7-Eleven stores would be affected,

and that would be a major problem for the millions of Americans who live in a socalled food desert, where the nearest grocery store is more than a mile away. “Our stores are placed in communities where these people rely on us to feed them,” he points out. “We’re talking about not only economically challenged, but physically challenged people.” SNAP is intended to be used to buy basics such as milk and eggs, and is not supposed to be used for fast food. Ursani says the rule came in reaction to a pizza chain that was letting people use EBT cards to buy frozen pizza, and then heating it up on site. In March and April,

Ursani and a group of 7-Eleven owners traveled to Washington to ask members of Congress to write the USDA and oppose the rule. Dennis Lane, who has owned his store in Quincy, Mass., for 40 years, also made the trip. “The kids that were catching the school bus in front of my store in the ‘70s are coming in with their own kids now,” he relates. “I’ve been feeding two generations of families in this neighborhood and I want to be allowed to continue to feed the families in my neighborhood.” The public comment period on the USDA rule is open until next Wednesday online at regulations.gov.

By Desert Star Staff DENVER - If you’ve been anywhere near downtown during Denver’s Comic Con, you’ve probably seen swarms of people dressed up as their favorite comic book characters. But you may not know that the event’s parent organization, Pop Culture Classroom, also brings literacy programs to prisons across the state. The group will kick off a new workshop Saturday at the Sterling Correctional Facility. Illya Kowalchuk, Pop Culture Classroom’s director of education, said comics can help lower barriers to learning. “Over 60 percent of people that are in the correctional system are functionally illiterate, which means they can’t read above a fourth-grade level,” he said. “In addition to reducing

that intimidation level, they’re just cool, right? Like, comics are just cool and fun to read.” He said people in these programs start by reading graphic novels and learning how stories are told through text and artwork. Professional artists then coach the students as they create their own sixpanel comic strip based on personal experiences. Kowalchuk said the program gives many behind bars a chance to tell their own stories for the first time. He said participants are encouraged to write a story focusing on personal transformation, based on reallife events, through metaphor or something they hope to see happen in the future. “The stories that the inmates will write about are

producing climate benefits worth almost $700 million. The gas and oil industry is the largest source of methane emissions in the nation. According to Joe Minott, executive director and chief counsel of the Clean Air Council, this is the first time the EPA has established rules for methane emissions from an industrial source. “EPA needs to get a lot of credit for finally tackling a greenhouse gas that is 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20year period,” Minott said. Oil and gas producers say the rules are unnecessary because the industry already has reduced emissions by almost 79 percent since 2005. The EPA said the new standards also will reduce emissions of other pollutants, such as smog-forming compounds and toxics linked to a variety of serious health issues, including cancer. But

Minott said he is concerned that the new rules won’t apply to existing sources. “That’s having a profound impact on the quality of life and the health of people that live next to the existing infrastructure,” he said. Last month, Pennsylvania’s independent Regulatory Review Commission approved new state rules that would apply to existing gas and oil wells. Minott said the state rules impose standards on existing facilities that are similar to the EPA’s rules for new and modified structures. “It’s going to have a profound impact on local communities that are hosting the infrastructure,” he said, “and on trying to slow down climate change.” Some state legislators have introduced a resolution to block the new state rules from going into effect. Iowans Aid Wildfire Evacuees in Alberta

Some Iowa disaster workers are among those now in Alberta to help with aid to wildfire evacuees. (RedCross.ca)

By Desert Star Staff The wildfire in Fort McMurray, Alberta, has forced residents of the entire

community out of their homes, leaving an urgent need for places to sleep, plus food, water and basic supplies.

By Desert Star Staff Whether it’s your first move or your tenth, the process can be overwhelming. In fact, in a recent survey, commissioned by Duck brand, conducted online by Harris Poll, over half of Americans (56 percent) say packing to move is extremely/very stressful. Some easy ideas can help you pack and unpack like a pro. • Purge before Packing: Before loading boxes, get rid of items you haven’t used in a year or more. Make piles to sell, donate or toss. Sell valuable pieces online or to a consignment store, and donate other items in good condition to charity -- some organizations even pick things up at your home. • Tap into Apps: Nearly half of Americans (48 percent) describe their moving style as “organized chaos” -- stating they have it all under control, even though it may not look like it. To help you truly organize the chaos, download a free app like Move Advisor or MyMove to create moving day checklists and timelines. • Be Picture Perfect: Create a catalogue of photos before you move. Snap pictures of how your furniture was arranged, favorite knickknacks were displayed and complex electronics were installed to make set-up easier in your new place. • Box it Up: Over one quarter of Americans (26 percent) say finding enough boxes is frustrating when packing to move. While many are searching the local grocer or a friend’s basement for containers to reuse, it’s better to use new boxes, as secondhand boxes have often lost their strength. New, sturdy boxes, like those from Duck brand, are easy to find and available in a variety of sizes and levels of durability.

Then, seal your boxes with a strong packaging tape, such as EZ Start packaging tape. It won’t split or tear, and features “Frustration Free” special release technology, so you never lose the tape end. • Disassemble a Day Ahead: Taking apart large furniture is time-consuming. Disassemble items before moving day, so your crew isn’t bogged down unbolting beds. Keep screws and other small parts together in sandwich bags taped to the furniture to which it belongs. • Wrap with Care: It’s no surprise that one third of Americans (34 percent) say worrying about items breaking is the most frustrating part when packing to move. Wrap fragile belongings with a reputable cushioning material, like Bubble Wrap cushioning. Dish and glass kits also provide pouches and dividers to protect delicate goods. • Learn to Love Labeling: Avoid having to answer, “Where does this go?” by clearly labeling each box on the sides, so you’ll be able to see its destination when boxes are stacked. Or, colorcode them using colored duct tape. Duck Tape brand offers hundreds of colors. • Moving Day Must-Haves: Clearly mark one box with immediate essentials, such as tools to re-assemble furniture; plates and utensils for feeding your moving crew; toiletries; and clothes for your first night. And, don’t forget to prepare for inclement weather -- have plastic runners on hand to cover floors if rain strikes, plus towels to wipe up wet spots. With prep and planning, you’ll complete your move in no time, so you can relax and experience life’s next adventure in your new home. StatePoint

While the local Red Cross has been helping out, it also has flown in disaster workers from south of the Canadian border

-- including a few from Iowa. “It’s somewhat unusual for us to go across borders, between Red Cross societies,” said Leslie Schaffer, a regional executive for several Iowa Red Cross chapters, “and so it really is kind of an illustration of the impact of the fire.” Iowa Red Cross workers are part of the support teams at local shelters in Edmonton, Calgary and other cities in Alberta where evacuees have been taken. Schaffer said Iowans can donate to the Canadian wildfire response effort through their local Red Cross chapter. The need for assistance is particularly urgent because of the size, strength and speed at which the fire has moved, she said. “When they evacuate so

quickly, people leave behind a lot of their possessions,” she said. “I mean, really, it’s just about getting out with what they have with them, and so there’s a lot of emotional impact on folks.” With the fire destroying at least 2,400 homes and other buildings, Schaffer said most of the people of Fort McMurray have no idea what they might return to. “Right now,” she said, “so many people, they don’t know whether their homes are still standing or whether they’ve been lost in the fire.” Of the 50 American Red Cross disaster workers brought to Alberta, so far three are from Iowa.

Undocumented Children Eligible for Full Medi-Cal By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Starting Monday, about 170,000 undocumented children in California will be newly eligible for full-scope Medi-Cal insurance. It’s part of the Health4AllKids program, extending coverage to children in low-income families who qualify. Advocates are planning a big rally on the Capitol steps in Sacramento on Monday to celebrate. Mike Odeh, associate director of health policy with the group Children Now, said it’s a smart move to invest in more comprehensive and preventive care, rather than let health conditions worsen until kids are forced to seek treatment in the emergency room. “Everyone in our community needs access

to health-care services, especially kids, if we want a healthy, productive future of our state,” Odeh said. The coverage includes full medical, dental and mentalhealth services. State budget estimates for the expansion are about $20 million this year and $143 million as more families gradually sign up in the next fiscal year. Advocates now are pushing to extend coverage to all adults, also regardless of immigration status. Opponents have said programs such as Health4AllKids are only encouraging more undocumented people to come to California. However, Odeh pointed out that Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Washington state and Washington, D.C., all have made similar moves - without that issue.

Undocumented children will become eligible for full Medi-Cal coverage starting Monday. (Carolina Quezada/NACHC) “I don’t buy into that notion,” he said. “Other states have expanded coverage of Medicaid to undocumented kids and I don’t think we’ve seen this happening.”

Some undocumented families who are eligible for coverage may be afraid of giving personal information to the state, but Odeh said the health applications won’t

be shared with immigration enforcement and won’t affect anyone’s future application for citizenship. More information is online at health4allkids.org.

to improve patient outcomes and reduce re-admissions. Heidi Kelly, from Camarillo, supports the law because her mother passed away last year from internal bleeding after being discharged from the hospital on blood thinners, without sufficient instructions for the family. “They didn’t ask for one person to give all the information to, and I’m the oldest of six,” says Kelly. “And they were talking to all of us at different times giving different information.” The numbers on unplanned hospital re-admissions for the first part of 2016 aren’t in yet, but state statistics show that for the first half of 2015, more than 124,000 people, or 13.14 percent, had to return to the hospital within 30 days. That’s a slight improvement over 2014. Surani Hayre-Kwan, family nurse practitioner with the California Association

for Nurse Practitioners, says the new law forces hospitals to give the patient and the caregivers the tools they need to ensure a healthy recovery. “Instead of just being kind of pushed aside, as the patient is being cared for or getting ready for discharge, the caregiver can now say ‘Hey, wait a minute, you have an obligation to include me in this process in order for this patient to be cared for correctly,’” says Hayre-Kwan. A survey from the AARP found that 4.4 million Californians give unpaid care for a family member or loved one. Almost half perform complex medical tasks and almost 80 percent manage medications. On their website, the AARP has a downloadable printed card about the CARE act that you can put in your wallet as a reminder of your rights at the hospital.

By Desert Star Staff A few weeks from now, environmental groups will be going up against the coal industry in the U.S. District Court in Washington over President Barack Obama’s Clean Power Plan, which placed the first ever limits on heat trapping carbon dioxide pollution from power plants. The U.S. Supreme Court has temporarily halted the plan because its legal merits are being challenged. Kerwin Olson, executive director of the Citizens Action Coalition, considers the fight a big waste of time and says the coal industry needs to adapt and change

its business model. “Coal is on its way out,” he states. “Natural gas, wind, solar and efficiency are all cheaper, cleaner, and if you look at all the new resources built in our country over the last 12 months, it’s all natural gas, wind and solar. So coal’s time is finished and it’s time to move on.” Peabody Energy, America’s largest coal company, denies the scientific consensus on climate change and has said it joined with others in the coal industry and attorneys general from coal-producing states to protect what it calls affordable energy for American families.

The case will be heard in the federal court in Washington on June 2, and will likely go back to the Supreme Court regardless of the lower court’s ruling. Olson says the coal industry’s fight against clean power reminds him of the telecommunications battle of a couple of decades ago. “Ma Bell and Indiana Bell and AT and T resisting the Internet and cellular technology, trying to maintain their outdated business model,” he recalls. “That’s the same thing that’s going on with electric utilities.” The Natural Resources Defense Council also is trying

Impact of Student Loan Debt on Americans’

By Desert Star Staff WATERTOWN, Mass., -A new survey released today shows that student loan debt is affecting people’s lives in unexpected ways – and the entire economy as a result. From newly- minted grads to Baby Boomers nearing retirement, 72 percent of people with student debt say it impacts their life every day, and 77 percent say it’s made it more difficult to “live my life the way I want. With 35 percent of job openings expected to require at least a bachelor’s degree by 2020[1], this new data suggests a troubling outlook for current and future generations of borrowers and their employers. The survey, which was commissioned by EdAssistŽ, a division of Bright Horizons Family SolutionsŽ, and conducted by Kelton Global, shows that while student loan debt is certainly costing people financially, there is a lot more than money at stake. As a result of student loan debt, the survey found, employees are passing up their dream jobs and giving up on future education: Nearly half (49 percent) said they’re so stressed, they’d prefer help with school debt www.desertstarweekly.com

over budgeting (30 percent), credit card debt (28 percent), and even retirement (42 percent). And 47 percent are looking for help from employers when searching for a new job. 85 percent would like to earn additional degrees, but more than three in five (64 percent) say their current debt would prevent them from doing so. While 37 percent have been forced to give up their dream jobs completely, more

than half (58 percent) say debt would force them into jobs just for higher pay, and 33 percent said they would take any job they could get just to pay off their loans. “Rather than opening up pathways to success, in some cases, these big education bills are having the reverse effect, says Chris Duchesne, Vice President at EdAssist. “The amount of student debt people are carrying is costing them in dreams and ambition, and potentially costing employers in creativity, innovation, and the next big idea. The EdAssist survey uncovered a multitude of additional ways student loan debt is upending the lives and careers of Americans across all generations. Eighty-two percent of people with student loans admit it’s caused difficulties in their lives and is holding them back from achieving significant life milestones, like buying a car (56 percent), house (50 percent) or opening a credit card (41 percent). Forty-nine percent would delay engagement or marriage due to debt, and 21 percent are struggling to start a family. Seventy-eight percent of people with student loan debt say it has limited their ability to save for retirement. Additional key findings show: 77 percent of

people have had a personal relationship negatively affected by student loan debt. 73 percent of Gen Xers with student debt say it impacts their life every day. 79 percent of Millennials with debt say it has made it more difficult to “live my life the way I want. 78 percent of Baby Boomers carrying their own debt say it’s affected their ability to save for retirement. 54 percent of men feel debt has limited their career choices, versus 47 percent of women. “Many people see student loan debt as a millennial problem, but disturbingly, it isn’t, said John Eshleman, Manager of Benefits, Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, Texas, which offers student loan repayment benefits to employees. “Between taking on debt for dependents and the high demand for graduate degrees in today’s workforce, people of all ages are carrying student loan debt. As an employer, we want to see our employee’s lead happy and fruitful lives. With the amount of debt degreeholding individuals are facing today, we feel it is right from a recruitment and retention perspective to help ease this burden for our employees.

the spiritual purpose behind all relationships. Can you see these? Or are you caught in a duality of purpose? A Gemini test. Stand always with intentions for Goodwill. This is your festival.

CANCER You may feel your work at times takes you away from family. And then, in turn, family feels like it takes you away from your (spiritual) work. Your task is to balance the two. The more difficult, the greater the Initiation. Do you have visions and dreams for a different future? Envision and (day) dream more. In between health crisis and responsibilities glimmers of dreams occur. Record them.

E N T E RTA I N M E N T Captain America vs. Iron Man

BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

“Captain America: Civil War” is off to a ‘MARVEL-ous’ start, bringing in over $800 million worldwide to date. In this latest superhero mega movie, Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) and his supporters face off against Captain America (Chris Evans) in teams of six each. And, for Marvel fans, the action-packed battle scenes come fast and furious. It does help if you are

familiar with other films in the series like “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Captain America: Winter Soldier” which detail the friendship between Steve Rogers, aka Captain America and his World War II buddy James “Bucky” Barnes (Sebastian Stan), also known as the Winter Soldier. Eventually, you will figure out their close

connection as I finally did, but the link will be more apparent if you have already seen the other two films. As “Captain America: Civil War” begins, the Avengers are trying to make the world a better place in Lagos, Nigeria, but things get out of hand. Soon there is massive collateral damage, which causes the world and the United Nations to question the group’s ability to keep evil in check. After the botched Nigerian battle, Tony Stark (Iron Man) meets Alfre Woodard, the mother of a young man killed in a previous battle with evil vs. the Avengers. As a result, Stark begins to agree with the Secretary of State and 116 nations that the Avengers should sign the Sokovia Accords, named after a fictional city destroyed during another super-hero invasion in a preceding super hero film “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” In that story, the battle between good and evil forces also led to catastrophic damage. Now back to the current film plot. Captain America does not want to wait to be asked for help by the UN and remains steadfast in his resistance to

signing the Accords. He is also determined to help his buddy, now known as “The Winter Soldier,” regain his reputation. To accomplish this, they must find out who is controlling the Winter Soldier’s mind against his will. Another clue, the perpetrator is a character from “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The split decision over honoring the UN sanctioned accords results in a major conflict, between the two rival Avenger forces. And at this point, what really lightens up the film, and I must confess what led to my favorite part of the movie, is Tony Stark reaching out to a neophyte hero, the very young Spider Man. According to co-director Joe Russo, “ We wanted to introduce free radical characters into the storytelling.” And young Spidey is all of that and more. For starters, he’s a 15-year-old kid from Queens with special powers unlike any of the other Avengers. He is also loaded with younglooking enthusiasm, which generates much-appreciated comic relief. To capture this young-looking, awe-filled energy the filmmakers cast

19-year-old Tom Holland. His presence in the big onscreen battle between the opposing Avenger forces is truly a highlight of the film. “Captain America: Civil War” rated PG-13 for extended sequences of violence, action and mayhem has a running time of 2 hours, 27 minutes.

“Captain America: Civil War,” in 3-D, is playing at the El Capitan Theatre, 6838 Hollywood Blvd, through May 22. Warren Buffett bites into Apple with $1 billion purchase ahead of shares’ fall By Desert Star Staff Berkshire Hathaway, the investment conglomerate run by Warren Buffett, the world’s third-richest man, has just purchased nearly 10 million Apple shares for around $1.07 billion. The move, which was disclosed in a regulatory filing on Monday, comes at a time when the price of Apple’s stock has fallen its lowest point in almost two years in the wake of an April report revealing disappointing earnings. The 9.81 million shares were acquired for an average of $109 each. Apple’s price, however, has since fallen further, to about $90 per share, though it quickly shot up to $93 following the news www.desertstarweekly.com

of the billion-dollar purchase. Berkshire Hathaway’s share is now worth around $900 million. Apple’s stock has dropped 12 percent since the beginning of 2016 on slowing growth in iPhone sales. Carl Icahn, another high-profile billionaire investor, disclosed last month that he had sold his entire position in Apple, citing concerns about the Chinese government meddling in its economy. Greater China, which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, is Apple’s second largest market by revenue, and the company announced just last week that it has invested $1 billion in Chinese ridesharing company Didi. Icahn had earlier bought his own $1 billion stake in a

failed bid to steer Apple into increasing dividend payouts. Last week, Appaloosa Management, a hedge fund run by billionaire David Tepper, also sold its stake in Apple, which was valued at $133 million. While he didn’t own any Apple shares at the time, Warren Buffett echoed Icahn’s sentiments in 2013 when he argued that the company was holding onto too much cash, though his suggested remedy was that the company buy back its own shares. Berkshire’s purchase is notable because the investment giant is known to steer clear of technology stocks. The company has, few years, and Buffett himself however, been steadily adding was recently revealed to be to its stake in IBM over the past backing a bid to buy Yahoo, May 18, 2016

La Quinta Football Adds Local Sports Stars To Staff

By Julie Buehler LA QUINTA, Ca. - Two local sports heroes are joining the La Quinta Blackhawks football coaching staff. And while one makes a lot of sense, the other is turning a lot of heads. Former Blackhawkturned-Kansas City-Chief wide receiver Jeff Webb tells us he’s received dozens of congratulatory messages celebrating his new position with his Alma Mater. But he’s not the only new addition to the Blackhawks coaching staff. Timothy Bradley Jr. is the most successful athlete to come out of the Coachella Valley. Period. He’s won multiple world titles and millions in the ring. And now he’s a football coach. He’s joining former La Quinta standout and NFL receiver Jeff Webb as assistants on Dan

Armstrong’s staff. With 26 years at La Quinta high school, Armstrong is the longest-tenured head coach in the Coachella Valley, and this could be his final season as he prepares to retire. And that’s part of the reason Webb joined the staff. “We all know this may be Coach Armstrong’s last year,” Webb told KMIR. “So I want to give back to my coach.” And his prediction for Bradley making the transition from the ring to the gridiron? “I think it’s going to be easy for him. The champ, our champ, the desert’s champ... He knows football, anything that he touches turns to gold,” Webb said. “Some of the best coaches never even touch a pigskin, but they know how to coach a sport.” Bradley has hosted NFL players for his youth football camps in Cathedral City in the past. And he’s not the only athlete that transitioned into the world of football from a different sport.

Former international rugby star Jared Hayne, who caught national attention as he tried out for the San Francisco 49ers, announced Sunday he’s retiring from the NFL to play rugby for New Zealand in the Rio Olympics. Now this is the first year Rugby Sevens, the faster version of the sport, is in the games. And it’s the first

time since 1924 any rugby is played in the Olympics. And speaking of being back in the Olympics, Russia’s sports minister made a plea for his country to be allowed to compete at the Rio Games. In an article written for Britain’s Sunday Times, Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko asked for Russia’s athletes to be reinstated in

time for Rio. There’s less than three months before the games open August 5th, and Moscow wants a global ban overturned to allow its track and field athletes to compete. Of course KMIR has you covered for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, including exclusive interviews with members of Team USA. Source KMIR

By Desert Star Staff Just a week and a day after Mothers’ Day, comes

Mothers’ Equal Pay Day, a date that marks how far into 2016 a mom typically has

to work to make up for last year’s difference in income between moms and dads. The observance today is based on a National Women’s Law Center study that shows mothers make 73 cents for every dollar fathers make. Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, head of the organization Moms Rising, says another study, from Stanford University, illustrates how mothers are discriminated against when it comes to hiring and pay. “Moms are 80 percent less likely to be hired than nonmoms for the same job,” she points out. “And in fact they’re also – for highly paid jobs – offered $11,000 lower starting salaries. Dads on the other hand are offered $6,000 more.”

In Washington state, mothers make less than 69 cents for every dollar fathers make. Annually, the gap amounts to $19,000 less for Washington mothers. Rowe-Finkbeiner says U.S. lawmakers should update the Paycheck Fairness Act so that wages in companies are more transparent and patterns of inequality can be identified. “When we’re talking about discrimination against moms, we’re talking about a lot about subconscious, implicit bias,” Rowe-Finkbeiner states. “There isn’t a committee of people saying, ‘Let’s pay moms less.’ It’s a lot of subconscious, small decisions that significantly add up over time in a really big way.”

Rowe-Finkbeiner says paid family leave, affordable child care, and easy access to health care can also help lower the wage gap. As head of Moms Rising, Rowe-Finkbeiner hears many stories from working mothers. In one case, a woman came to a sad realization when she looked around and found most of her coworkers were women. “She walked up and she asked the director, ‘Why are there so many women here?’” Rowe-Finkbeiner relates. “And he said, ‘Because I can pay them less.’ And then she wrote in and said the part that’s heartbreaking, which is ‘I hadn’t yet learned I was less valuable than a man.’”

By Julie Buehler PALM DESERT, Ca. -Chad Toocheck has quite the story. After battling addiction in his youth, he overcame that past, earned a football scholarship at Western Alabama and caught the eye of NFL scouts thanks to his tall frame, sure hands and speed. Less than a year ago, he was featured on the NFL Network’s critically acclaimed show “Undrafted” and preparing for his shot in the NFL and then... More life happened. “This time last year, things

were different,” Toocheck told KMIR. “I was looking forward to the draft, going into camp, I had all my eggs in the football basket. I pulled my hamstring before the draft, so that kind of ruined my chances of getting into camp and shortly after that I was diagnosed with cancer. And then as soon as I finished all my chemotherapy, my mom passes away suddenly. And along the way my mind set went from I want to play football and I want to help people to I want to help people and it’d be awesome if I could play football.” Well, Sunday, he’ll be on the field for the SoCal Coyotes, the Coachella Valley’s own AAA

developmental football team. It’s the start of the playoff for the Coyotes who are gunning for their 5th championship, but Toocheck, who was recruited by teams across the nation, told KMIR winning on the field is only part of what brought him to the program. It’s the team’s community outreach that scored in his book. “Coach Miller and the SoCal Coyotes, I’m so drawn to them because of what they want to do in the community,” said Toocheck. “It’s very important that we win games,” said head coach J. David Miller. “If we don’t win games we’ll be living in a

box under the interstate, but it’s very important that that’s our pulpit and the success we have on the field gives us an opportunity to stand in front of kids and say look, this is what I’ve done to succeed.” The Coyotes boast a leadership curriculum they pass to elementary schools and middle schools across the Coachella Valley. Scoring new fans with their winning ways and powerful message. “Our lessons in leadership and the Coyote leadership programs and the leadership expos have impacted thousands of our youth throughout the valley,” said Miller. “But the importance

of those is the power is in the story of the players.” Underscoring that message, franchise recordholding receiver Rashad Roberts was asked, “Any secrets to the coyotes success?” He answered simply, “What you do and what you say has to match. That’s the secret.” Toocheck and the rest of the Coyotes will take the field Sunday, May 15th at Shadow Hills High School. The game begins at 3:00 and you can print your free ticket, courtesy of The General Air Conditioning and Plumbing. Source KMIR

‘Egg’ceptional choices for breakfast fans

By Pamela Price The next time you crave eggs for breakfast, whether it’s one lonely fried egg ($1.50) off the menu at La Copine on Old Woman Springs Road in Flamingo Heights, in Yucca Valley or scrambled eggs with bacon at The Parker Palm Springs “cozy diner” style restaurant, Norma’s it’s obvious there’s more going on behind the scenes with breakfast today then ever before. Mark Farley, a wellseasoned marketing director and a serious breakfast fan said breakfast is the new lunch, noting that breakfast styles are diverse and the cost can range from lavish too

economical. Dining al fresco on the sun-drenched patio at The Parker costs nearly $100 for two, attribute that to two eggs and bacon priced at $27. With that in mind, here’s a trio of exceptions, which honor the egg at more plebeian prices. At Townie Bagels/Bakery/Café in Palm Springs where you order on the counter, enabling you to view and inhale the freshly baked bagel and variety’s forms cinnamon raison to sesame, the choices are few but fabulous after one bite. The bagel + egg breakfast for 3.25 is a good place to start. Even with the trimmings such as cheese and bacon,

the most you’ll pay is $6.67, that’s for the “Everything Bill Feingold, which has too many add-ons to list here. Another contender for exceptional eggs is Spencer’s Restaurant in Palm Springs at the Tennis Club. While I would rather go into raptures on Spencer’s “one large waffle served with soft butter mixed berries and whipped cream” I will focus on their traditional “three country fresh eggs” (I recommend pancake style), with delicately sliced fruit and one of the most perfectly toasted bagels in the desert served with soft cream cheese ($8.95). No surprise Spencer’s was locally voted Best Sunday

Brunch. My old standby is Manhattan Delicatessen Bakery Restaurant, Palm Desert and Palm Springs with eggs served 15 different ways (grade AA local eggs only said the menu), you can also “build your own omelet with choices ranging from homemade Chile to ‘lox trim’. A traditional “one egg any style” with hashed brown potatoes and a toasted bagel and preserves (ask

for the scrumptious house made applesauce) is divine at $5.99, and that’s a fraction of the egg duet at Norma’s at the Parker Palm Springs as well on East Palm Canyon in Palm Springs As, Mr. Farley a serious breakfast fan says, “I’ll take Manhattan!”

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The world fell in love with the movies about one hundred years ago. Instead of losing interest in what some said was just a passing fad, the movies and its actor/celebrities

in America. Nostalgia in everything Hollywood has produced volumes of books, articles, and plays. There are actors who became celebrities, then there are actors who became legends, and then there are the super ICON’s of Hollywood. Katharine Hepburn was a super ICON. She was also a very smart, gifted, alpha female actor who knew how to get what she wanted when it came to being cast in a movie. “Tea at Five”, is a saucily written one-woman monologue about Hepburn by Matthew Lombardo based on Hepburn’s book “Me: Stories of my Life”. Nicely co-directed by Wendy Cohen and Marge Doyle, the play serves up anecdotes and facts (some of which may be apocryphal) on have instead grown from mere the career of the great Kate curiosities, to fascination, to Hepburn, the only actor to win an all-consuming addiction. four Leading Role Oscars. Brundage discovered and fell in love with Lombardo’s one woman monologue play about Hepburn. In turn, she recently brought the play to the attention of Artistic Director and theatre founder Joy Groves, with an offer to portray Hepburn if Joy would produce it (Hepburn and Brundage are both red heads. It’s hard to say no to redheads). Many people may not be familiar with some of the incidents in Hepburn’s starcrossed life and career. As the audience, we are made privy to many moments in her fascinating, and at times, her turbulent up and down movie and stage career. There is the twenty-seven year Spencer Tracy period that lasted until his death. Hepburn had few regrets when it came to her career. Her one great disappointment was her losing the role of Scarlett O’Hara in “Gone with the Wind” to then unknown Vivien Leigh. But, no more spoiler alerts. One must come to the theatre to discover a Hepburn you only thought you knew. Ms. Brundage is an

engaging personality and actor whose smile can light up a large train station. Her interpretation of Hepburn is not only entertaining and winning, it’s also a tribute to her own memorization skills. She never leaves the stage except for the act break. It’s a true test of stamina and talent that produces an astonishing performance. In the technical department the functional intimate drawing room set is uncredited as are the lighting and costume design, but is nevertheless, a perfect fit for the tiny 22 seat theatre. I suspect that codirectors Cohen and Doyle are responsible for most of technical elements. Don’t let the size of the stage dissuade you from attending. The Groves Cabin Theatre is the most honored theatre by the Desert Theatre League, with more than 50 Desert Star Awards to their credit. “Tea at Five” performs on Saturdays at 7 pm and on Sundays at 2:30 pm through June 12, 2016. Supreme Court opts against resolving Obamacare birth-control challenge

Supporters of contraception rally before Zubik v. Burwell, an appeal brought by Christian groups demanding full exemption from the requirement to provide insurance covering contraception under the Affordable Care Act, is heard by the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, U.S., March 23, 2016. © Reuters By Desert Star Staff The US Supreme Court refused to take up the contraception mandate challenge to the Affordable Care Act, brought by religiously-affiliated nonprofits who argued it violated their rights. The case was sent back to the lower courts for resolution. One justice short of a full bench following the death of conservative justice Antonin Scalia in February, the eightmember Supreme Court opted unanimously against offering a resolution in the case of Zubik v. Burwell,, sending it back to the appellate courts in order for the two sides to reach a compromise. In the order, the court said it “expresses no view on the merits of the cases” brought about by religious groups such as hospitals and universities. The plaintiffs challenged not only the Affordable Care Act’s requirement for contraception coverage in employer health plans, but also an “accommodation” later made by the Obama administration in which the nonprofits could opt out of paying for the birth-control coverage, via written notice, in order to allow the federal government and insurance companies to directly provide it. In seven combined lawsuits, the groups – including the Little Sisters of the Poor, a Catholic charity in Washington – cited the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to assert that the accommodation still violated their religious beliefs by involving them in access to birth-control coverage. The high court said Monday a compromise in the case must come

from a lower court. “The parties on remand should be afforded an opportunity to arrive at an approach going forward that accommodates petitioners’ religious exercise while at the same time ensuring that women covered by petitioners’ health plans ‘receive full and equal health coverage, including contraceptive coverage,’” the justices wrote. Contraception coverage must remain intact while litigation moves forward, the court said. The plaintiffs in the case said the Supreme Court’s action represented a temporary victory for religious freedom. “It is crucial that the Justices unanimously ordered the government not to impose these fines and indicated that the government doesn’t need any notice to figure out what should now be obvious—the Little Sisters respectfully object,” said Mark Rienzi, senior counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which represents Little Sisters of the Poor. “There is still work to be done, but today’s decision indicates that we will ultimately prevail in court.” Defenders of contraception coverage in the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, said the law’s provision of full coverage for birth control should apply to all employee insurance plans. “We are disappointed that the Court chose not to issue an opinion today conclusively resolving this dispute and ensuring that women receive health insurance coverage that includes contraceptive care without further delay,” said Louise Melling, deputy legal director for the American

TYPEWRITERS!

Civil Liberties Union. “We are, however, optimistic that the courts below will rule in favor of women’s access to the care they’re entitled to under federal law and that the highest court will resolve this matter once and for all on the right side of the law and history. Religious freedom does not include the right to discriminate against women.” In a separate opinion, Justice Sonia Sotomayor warned the plaintiffs and lower courts that the Supreme Court’s Monday order in the case does not mean that the high court would accept the plaintiffs’ argument in

potential future arguments. She was joined by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “Today’s opinion does only what it says it does: ‘afford[s] an opportunity’ for the parties and Courts of Appeals to reconsider the parties’ arguments in light of petitioners’ new articulation of their religious objection and the Government’s clarification about what the existing regulations accomplish, how they might be amended, and what such an amendment would sacrifice,” Sotomayor wrote. The female justices added that the court’s opinion does not “endorse the petitioners’

position that the existing regulations substantially burden their religious exercise or that contraceptive coverage must be provided through a ‘separate policy, with a separate enrollment process.’” The case may come back to the Supreme Court if lower courts are divided in future proceedings or if one of the parties files an appeal. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court looks to be one justice short for the foreseeable future, as Republicans in Congress have rejected any possibility of considering Merrick Garland, President Obama’s nominee for the bench.

Facebook courts GOP as allegations fly over its ‘suppression’ of conservative news

By Desert Star Staff Still stinging from allegations that Facebook “suppressed” right-leaning topics in its trending news feed, its tech-oriented leader is courting an unusual crowd for a face-to-face meeting – high-profile conservatives. The meeting to take place on Wednesday will feature Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, a senior advisor to Donald Trump named Barry Bennett, Fox News co-host and former White House press secretary Dana Perino, and media personality Glenn Beck, as well as others. The move comes in the wake of a Gizmodo report claiming that Facebook employees in charge of the network’s “trending” news section were biased against conservatives. Former workers told the outlet that Facebook routinely “suppresses” news stories of interest to conservative readers in its “trending” news section, even when the stories

are trending organically with Facebook readers themselves. Facebook denied the allegations following the report, claiming there was “no evidence that the anonymous allegations are true.” Gizmodo also stated that there was “no evidence” that the bias was mandated or even known about by Facebook’s management. However, the report did note that those in charge of the trending news section tend to be Ivy Leagueeducated individuals with liberal worldviews. As conservatives lambasted Facebook over the report, with some threatening to leave the social network altogether, Zuckerberg himself issued a statement in an attempt at damage control. “Trending Topics is designed to surface the most newsworthy and popular conversations on Facebook. We have rigorous guidelines that do not permit the prioritization

of one viewpoint over another or the suppression of political perspectives,” Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post. “In the coming weeks, I’ll also be inviting leading conservatives and people from across the political spectrum to talk with me about this and share their points of view. I want to have a direct conversation about what Facebook stands for and how we can be sure our platform stays as open as possible,” he added. Even Zuckerberg’s proposed meeting came under fire from conservative outlets like Breitbart, which alleged that all those being invited to the meeting were anti-Trump. “The move to invite from this school of ‘conservatives’ flies in the face of Zuckerberg’s claim of creating a diverse group for the discussion,” the website argued in a post. However, Bennett’s decision to attend the

meeting seems to have minimized that criticism. Facebook’s seemingly rocky relationship with Trump had come to light earlier, when one employee asked Zuckerberg whether the company had a responsibility “to help prevent President Trump in 2017.” Zuckerberg himself made comments critical of Trump’s position on immigration In April. Facebook’s head supports a more open immigration policy, while Trump has called

for the construction of a wall between the US and Mexico. “I hear fearful voices calling for building walls and distancing people they label as others, for blocking free expression, for slowing immigration, reducing trade and, in some cases around the world, even cutting access to the internet,” he said at an April conference, according to The Hill. “It takes courage to choose hope over fear,” he added.

MUSIC ‘Keeping it honest’ spans a range of new releases BY ROBERT KINSLER

A number of celebrated, groundbreaking artists are captured at the height of their powers via a slew of outstanding springtime releases.

Artist: Santana Title: Santana IV (Santana IV Records) You might like if you enjoy: Early Santana, War Tell me more: For the first time since the early 1970s, the original members of Santana reformed to record, the results showcased on the new studio album “Santana IV.” The natural follow-up to 1971’s successful “Santana III,” the reunion project teams guitar great Carlos Santana with the majority of his Woodstock-era line-up including Gregg Rolie (keyboards, lead vocals), Neal Schon (guitar, vocals), Michael Carabello (percussion) and Michael Shrieve (drums). There is a passion, inventiveness and cohesive spirit across the disc, with the rhythmic powerhouse “Shake It”

(featuring a terrific blend of percussion and lead guitar fireworks), signature Santanastyled “Anywhere You Want to Go,” expansive psychedelicblues instrumental “Fillmore East” and funk rock-styled “Freedom In Your Mind” (the latter featuring guest vocalist Ronald Isley) all pushing the classic rock ensemble forward. Artist: Sturgill Simpson Title: A Sailor’s Guide To Earth (Atlantic Records) You might like if you enjoy: Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, Van Morrison Tell me more: An amazing follow-up effort to his 2014 sophomore album “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music,” Sturgill Simpson’s third LP “A Sailor’s Guide to Earth” confirms the Kentucky native’s greatness. On the album’s first track, “Welcome to Earth (Pollywog),” Simpson somehow blends authentic country music,

orchestral textures and soul into a single five-minute arc. A few songs into “A Sailor’s Guide to Earth,” it’s obvious that the Kentucky native has somehow blended far-flung genres into a single sound built around an eight-track song cycle written following the birth of his first child in the summer of 2014. The thematic collection also includes a musical intermission where he delivers a magical and completely reworked cover of Nirvana’s “In Bloom.” Information: sturgillsimpson.com. Artist: Linda Ronstadt Title: Silk Purse (Varèse Sarabande Records) You might like if you enjoy: Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris Tell me more: Since her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2014, there has been a long-overdue examination of singer Linda Ronstadt’s long career. Although she

retired in 2011 (and was sadly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in December 2012), a newly-issued reissue of her second solo album “Silk Purse” showcases Ronstadt’s amazing soprano and emotional connection with a song. The 1970 album features Ronstadt exploring folk rock, alt-country and related styles. Chief among the joys here are the duet “Louise (with Gary White), the country ballad “He Darked the Sun” and her first hit “Long, Long Time” (the latter which earned the Arizona native her first Grammy Award nomination in 1971). Stapleton, Mo Pitney and Sturgill Simpson over the past few years is likely a reaffirmation of the path forged by artists long interested in preserving country music’s rich roots. On his latest release, available on DVD and digital, Alan Jackson makes a pretty compelling case for keeping the music real in an age where many country music artists have drifted into the world of pop. “Keep’ It Country – Live at Red Rocks” finds the Georgia son performing a rousing 26-song set of his beloved songbook, including “Good Time,” “Gone Country,” “Small Town Southern Man,” “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning),” Artist: Alan Jackson and “Where I Come From.” DVD Title: Keepin’ It Not one to ever live simply Country – Live at Red Rocks in the past, Jackson’s (Eagle Rock Entertainment) live performance staged You might like if you before a capacity crowd at enjoy: Alan Jackson, Hank Red Rocks Amphitheatre Williams Jr., George Strait in Colorado also featured Tell me more: The new songs from his 2015 emergence of country music album “Angels and Alcohol.” traditionalists including Chris Information: alanjackson.com.

Possible Prince heirs may have to submit to DNA testing, judge rules

By Michael Pearson and Sara Sidner Long-lost relatives -- or those claiming to be -- often materialize after the death of a wealthy celebrity, maybe seeking a piece of the proverbial pie. Such is the case with the death of Prince. But in a ruling published Monday, the Minnesota judge overseeing Prince’s estate has said anyone claiming to be the late entertainer’s heir could be subject to genetic testing. And District Judge Kevin Eide ruled potential heirs will need to pay for the testing themselves. But anyone who really is the Purple One’s descendant could probably get reimbursed for the cost: they would stand to inherit at least part of an estate worth millions of dollars. the special administrator overseeing Prince’s estate, Bremer Trust, asked the court to put in place a procedure to test those who are claiming to be Prince’s heirs. Last week, a man currently being held in a federal prison in Colorado claimed he is Prince’s son. Carlin Q. Williams, 39, said his mother gave birth to him after having sex with Prince in a Kansas City hotel in 1976. Also, an attorney who once represented the son of Prince’s late half-brother wrote a letter to the court saying he believed the man may have had a surviving granddaughter who would be Prince’s grand niece. But, attorney Michael Padden said, he has not been able to reach the girl to advise her and suggested that the court should appoint a guardian to represent the girl’s potential interests in the case. sought computer and other records pertaining to Prince. Eide also gave Bremer Trust the authority to use legal tools such as subpoenas and interstate depositions to get a full picture of Prince’s estate. Source: KMIR/CNN www.desertstarweekly.com

Al-Qaeda online magazine calls for stabbing attacks in US By Desert Star Staff An online magazine published by Al-Qaeda’s main affiliate urges stabbing attacks on Americans, following the wave of incidents in Israel. It also says damage to US economy could be inflicted via killings of businessmen and entrepreneurs in their homes. The article titled ‘O Knife Revolution, Head Towards America’ published Saturday in the Inspire magazine invites “zealous Muslims in America who clearly see their Muslim brothers in Palestine being tortured” to carry out terrorist attacks on the American soil, as quoted by Vocativ. The magazine says it is the “duty” of each Muslim to “spread this revolt to the throats of Americans in their very own homes.” Israel has seen a surge in street violence since October with ‘stabbing attacks’ claiming 28 lives. At the

same time, security forces killed 133 Palestinians who they said were assailants, according to Reuters. The article also calls for “professional assassinations” and “home assassinations” of renowned American businessmen and entrepreneurs. The May issue includes a collage of Microsoft founder Bill Gates as one such high-value target, the Washington Times reports. Inspire is an Islamist online recruitment tool published by group’s main affiliate, AlQaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). The magazine assigns itself as the first Englishlanguage Al-Qaeda magazine. “The Prophet ordered the killing of many criminal leaders using this method … And here we are, following the footsteps of the prophet on how he dealt with his enemies and friends,” Inspire’s Editor Yahya Ibrahim wrote as quoted by the Middle

East Media Research Institute. Ibrahim says that Islamists are “determined” to keep fighting and pursue America “in its homeland,” striking Americans with operations conducted by “organized jihadi groups and by Lone Jihad.” The May issue calls for

continuation of the bloody chain of the most notorious terror acts worldwide, mentioning 9/11, Boston Marathon bombing, and other capitals and locations that suffered from terror attacks, namely “Madrid, Bali, London and Paris.” This appeal differs from

the targeting announced by another Sunni terrorist group, Islamic State, which had earlier called for assassination of the American military personnel, notes the Washington Times. IS publishes its own English-language online magazine called Dabiq.

Refugee Family to Attend Anti-Fear Forum By Desert Star Staff The Syrian refugee crisis has created a lot of rhetoric in the United States, which has created fear and even hate by some toward immigrants and Muslim Americans. It has also led some state leaders to reject the resettlement of the refugees. Ira Harritt, Kansas City program coordinator for the American Friends Service Committee, says an exaggerated perception of threat also has increased levels of fear and anxiety and inflamed racial and ethnic tensions in schools and communities. “We’ve also seen politicians use that fear and threat to further their own interests and appeal to zenophobes and racists,” says Harritt. American Friends Service Committee has put together a series of public forums, with the next one slated for Thursday at the public library’s Plaza Branch in Kansas City. Harritt says the divisive

He says it’s all so unnecessary. “What the reality is, is that we’re more likely to be crushed by an unstable television set in our home than

to suffer a terrorist attack, and so the thing need to be put into perspective,” he says. Harritt says Kansas City took in one of the first Syrian refugee families to come to the United States, and that family will be at the forum on Thursday. He says hopefully that will help allay the fear

fans are still angling to be Tom Cruise’s wingman. On Monday, Twitter was all-abuzz with everything from GIFs to favorite lines from the

film which also costarred Kelly McGillis, Tim Robbins, Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards. Time has literally flown since Maverick, Goose and

the gang took to the skies as a group of students in training to become a part of the U.S. Navy’s squadron of elite pilots. The film was a big deal for Cruise at the time who was fairly new to the fame game with roles in “Taps” “The Outsiders” and “Risky Business.” He told the Los Angeles Times when “Top Gun” was released in 1986 that he saw the film as about more than military service. “It was important to me that we made a movie about characters and the human element -- not a war picture,” he said. “This movie is about competition, not killing.” Never seen it? Get thee to Netflix. We could tell you how it goes, but in the words of Maverick: “It’s classified. I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.” Source: KMIR/CNN

Anglo/Indian biopic engages with artistry and style

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic In “The Man Who Knew Infinity”, the world of 1914 eerily resonates with thorny issues still plaguing the 21st century; especially when it comes to culture, ethnicity, diversity, and the meritorious acceptance of individuals. Most Americans don’t really understand or comprehend the English and their “tight little island” mentality. If one wants to irritate an Englishman just call him a European; but be prepared to duck if you happen to be in a pub just before closing. England is a small county geographically. In 1914, about 60 million souls lived on an island where no one was, and still is, never more than seventy-five miles from the sea. As colonizers, they brought their culture, language, and the English point-of-view to whatever land they came to. In India of 1914, the British Raj had been embedded in power and in the running of the Indian government for almost 150 years. The intriguing story of “The Man Who Knew Infinity”, insightfully written and deftly directed by Matthew Brown, historically echoes some of the mathematics themes that are present in, not only in the 2015 Oscar-nominated film “The Theory of Everything”, starring Eddie Redmayne who walked away with a Best Actor statuette as astrophysicist Steven Hawking, but also was the subject matter in the earlier film “Good Will Hunting” where Matt Damon nabbed a Best Support Oscar. Once again, mathematics is the backdrop for this

engaging, finely crafted, and nicely acted Anglo/ Indian biopic based on the real life experience of Indian mathematics scholar Srinivasa Ramanujan. His field of expertise was in solving the “prime numbers” conundrum, vexing the world’s mathematicians. The superb Jeremy Irons stars as the brilliant, eccentric, and passionate Cambridge University mathematics professor G. H. Hardy. When Hardy is confronted with the mathematics genius of a young twenty-five year- old completely self-educated Indian student from Madras, named S. Ramanujan (stoically and poignantly played by Dev Patel) Hardy’s faith and passion for his chosen profession is put the test. Hardy agrees to sponsor and mentor Ramanujan at the behest of an old Indian friend convincing the admissions and faculty at Trinity College, Cambridge that another budding genius should be given an opportunity. After all, one its more famous students, Isaac Newton while sitting under an on-campus apple tree one afternoon discovered ‘gravity’; altering the world of science forever. Who knows where genius comes from? In the case of Ramanujan, Hardy, an avowed atheist asks where he gets his mathematic ideas and formulas from? “I get them from God”, he sincerely replies. The beauty and simplicity of the film will appeal to viewers who don’t give a fig for analysis of story points and/or whether they need to have a degree in mathematics to appreciate the give and take that Ramanujan endures from his erudite, but boorish and snobbish colleagues concerning his theorems and lack of “proofs”

to back up his claims. This is a feel-good movie that that celebrates the victory of an outsider over the insiders. It is the clashing of the Titans of East-West cultures – India the symbol of eastern thought, and England (at that time the reigning power intellectually as well as militarily) the guardian of western thought. When one contemplates today’s world and its problems, the movie is a welcome and enjoyable respite. “The Man Who Knew Infinity” is another one of those quintessential British movies in the vein of Merchant/Ivory films whose verisimilitude of the film’s period setting immediately envelops the viewer. If you enjoy rain and glowering scenery in the winter and the eagerly awaited English spring, with its flowers and fleeting sunshine, then you’ll feel right at home. Now you know why actors in early English films never seemed to take off their coats, even while eating. It’s bloody cold! I know, I lived there for three years. Director Brown scored a major coup when he asked if he could take his camera, cinematographer Larry Smith and the crew along with the cast to Trinity College, Cambridge to film

many of the scenes that take place in the movie. The supporting cast of characters consisting of academics, believers and skeptics are solidly performed by professional actors: Toby Smith (a believer) as Professor Littlewood; Jeremy Northam, as Bertrand Russell (a believer) who tells Hardy to forget protocol and let Ramanujan soar with his theories; Richard Johnson as Vice Master Henry Jackson (a skeptic) and the lovely Devika Bhise as Ramanujan’s loyal young wife Janaka, who remains in Madras

while her young husband pursues his academic studies. The film moves slowly at first, allowing the audience to settle in, but picks up speed in the middle section and continues to unfold to its inevitable conclusion. We Yanks are an impatient lot, however there’s no hurry. We should re-learn to slow down and smell the roses along the way. The results are usually worth waiting for. “The Man Who Knew Infinity” opens at the Camelot Theatres, Palm Springs, and at The River Theatre complex in Palm Desert on May 20, 2016.
