Cathedral City Councilman Faces Charges CATHEDRAL CITY – A Cathedral City councilman (and current Mayor Pro Tem) returned to work last week under intense public scrutiny after being arrested for allegedly siphoning funds from the city’s employee computer loan program. Charles Vasquez, 57, was arrested Monday, Apr. 8 at his home in Cathedral City and booked into the Indio jail. He was released the next day after posting a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday, June 11 on three felony counts of embezzlement by a public officer. Riverside County District Attorney Paul Zellerbach filed charges against Vasquez for misappropriation of public funds, according to a press release posted on the DA’s website. If convicted, Vasquez faces up to six years in jail. “The crimes charged involve the councilmember’s misuse of city funds through a program the city offers to loan money to employees and council members so they can purchase desktop computers, laptop computers or tablets,” said John Hall, senior public information officer for the Riverside District Attorney’s Office. “The program provides the loan at six percent interest and allows employees to make payroll deductions to repay the loans. Participants obtain an invoice or price quote from a vendor and are then given a city check to use for the equipment purchase,” Hall said A three month investigation

of domestic violence at a spectacular Gala fundraiser on Saturday, May 4 at 5:30 p.m., featuring the casts of Broadway and national tour musicals singing show tunes from The City of Palm Springs and beginnings for Shelter from the a host of top productions including the Palm Springs Police Officers Storm, the Coachella Valley’s only Les Miserables, Chicago, Hairspray, Association will celebrate new full-service shelter serving victims Jersey Boys, Wicked and many more.

conducted by District Attorney’s office revealed that from August 2011 through December 2012, Vasquez did not properly use the program and instead misappropriated city funds for personal purchases. The investigation showed that Vasquez would use part of the funds for computer purchases and part for unauthorized personal items. It also was discovered that in December 2012, Vasquez was provided a city credit card for the purpose of purchasing a laptop and a tablet but instead used the credit card to purchase $2,028 in prepaid Master Card gift cards. On previous occasions, Vasquez submitted fraudulent invoices under the loan program and then used the loan proceeds to purchase unapproved personal items in addition to some computer equipment. The complaint states that Vasquez on two occasions allegedly purchased computers and then returned them and bought personal items or kept the refunded money. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney William Robinson of the District Attorney’s Professional Standards Unit of the Special Prosecution Section. Vasquez said, “This will be heard in the courts my only statement at this time is that I will be cleared of the charges against me.” He was elected to office in 2005. Cathedral City Mayor Kathleen DeRosa responded by saying, “This is on-going litigation and I cannot add anything.” The Shelter fields more than 3,200 calls to its 24-hour Crisis Lines each year, bringing many families to the shelter’s 70-bed emergency location. Drive sober or get pulled over this Cinco de Mayo By Investigator Lance Colmer Cinco de Mayo has become a big night out for many people, especially young adults. However, the annual celebration, much like New Year’s Eve or St. Patrick’s Day, can also be a dangerous night out because of alcohol-impaired drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), from 2007 to 2011, drunk drivers with blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of .08 and above, accounted for 38 percent of all vehicle related deaths that occurred each year around Cinco de Mayo.During the 2011 Cinco de Mayo holiday alone, 35 percent of motor vehicle fatalities nationwide involved an alcohol-impaired driver or motorcycle operator with a BAC at or above the legal limit of .08. Death and injuries are not the only consequences from drunk driving. Individuals arrested for driving under the influence, even without causing an accident or

injury, often face costs frequently amounting to well over $10,000. These costs include attorney and court fees, fines, DUI classes, the suspension or revocation of driving privileges and increased insurance costs. Drivers can also expect,

the irresponsible decision to drink and drive, be forewarned, law enforcement officers will be on high alert for drunk drivers during the Cinco de Mayo weekend.

depending on the jurisdiction, to face towing and impound fees ranging from a few hundred dollars, all the way up to $1,000 or more. If your DUI arrest is the result of an accident causing injury or death, your criminal charge will usually include booking and incarceration until arraignment. Individuals may be able to post bail, however, the cost of bail depends on the specific charge, and could cost thousands of dollars. Then, depending on the outcome of the case, convicted individuals often face fees associated with court mandated alcohol and drug treatment programs, payments to the DMV for the reinstatement of driving privileges, and strict probation terms. When probation is granted in DUI cases, the terms usually include not possessing alcoholic beverages; not driving unless properly licensed; and the installation of an alcohol detection Ignition Interlock Device in any car you own or drive. Probation for DUI cases is usually for a period of 36 months. If your Cinco de Mayo plans include alcohol, make arrangements before the fiesta begins to ensure you arrive home safely. Further questioning disclosed the fact that the place he described was the site of a very old Indian well, long since filled in and covered over by drifting sand, aided by the tramping of cattle. He stated that as a small boy he had gone to this old well for water, [his] grandmother carrying a large red clay jar and he a small one. The Indian camp of many years ago (as evidenced by the fact that he was a boy then and now an old man and gray) was situated just below the small hill on which I had built my homestead cabin. This Indian’s story explained the broken pottery I found from time to time in the vicinity. Very early the next morning, in high spirits I walked the 14 or so miles across the desert in record time. My thoughts [were] in a whirl. Could water be so close at hand! Gee whiz! I was excited. Early and late I dug enthusiastically. Within a week I had found and uncovered the old Indian well used many years ago! It was on the north edge of Miracle Hill just as he had described. This is the only known authentic Indian well in this part of the desert. All the others have been blown over with sand and the locations forgotten. This relic out of

again. Some of these paths went so deep into the earth that women were afraid to walk down for the water. We were happy to use this old Indian well for some time,

not holes straight down in the earth as we know them. Indians had no boards or pipe, no rope, no pulleys. So therefore they dug inclined open trenches leading down into the ground until water was reached. Then women walked down to the bottom, filled jars with water, and walked out

because it was much closer and saved hours for other things. But the water was too hard and alkali to cook with or drink, and would not mix with soap, if you know what I mean. Go to www. cabotsmuseum.org for tour information and hours.

Time, Energy and Money: Keys to Success By Janice gough There are three components to everything that we do; time, energy, and money. To create success in our lives, we must manage all three of these things successfully. When we create a discipline for all of our resources, we learn to create success in our endeavors. These three things are the most difficult for most people to manage. Time, as a resource, has become even harder to manage due to the demand of a fast moving society. Technology has placed a demand on us to get things done in minutes. Although technology has made our work easier, information more accessible and faster, we must find time for this also. In investing, markets can change within a split second. The difference of selling a stock within minutes can be the difference of making or losing money from a stock trade. Stock traders have alarms set on their computers, with every stock in their portfolio, letting them know if a stock is dropping or going up. They must make split second decisions for their clients to help make them money on their investments. Being able to manage our time to be most productive is a challenge. The most successful people that I know are great time managers. They identify the activities that reward them the most and place those things first. The middle section of time incorporates management of those activities, and their third sector of time incorporates other marketing. And when they have met all of these established time frames for work, they make the time for family and friends. In order to satisfy the demand of our time, we need energy to do so. We, all fight between the quest of good energy and bad energy. A negative energy person or happening can ruin your day. Staying healthy, getting plenty of rest, and being focused, and in accord with our selves is

another challenge. Happiness and confidence will provide the energy to accomplish your goals. Staying positive can be a struggle. All successful people have mentors. This could be someone who connects with your same philosophy, desires and goals and is there to help you achieve success. We all need someone who will listen, and whom we connect with and will support us 100 percent. Determining who the energy suckers are in our life is very important. Once you identify the culprits, you become better at managing them in your time slots or eliminating them entirely. The third process is how we spend our money. In order for us to achieve the ability to succeed, we must not spend more money than we make. We must have money left over to give back and invest. Giving back is a reward we achieve from our work. Our ability to invest is the reward of taking our excess earnings and putting that money to work for us. Successful people always find the best trusted people to work with, whether it is a doctor, lawyer, or accountant. They want to spend their time and focus on their own work. A percentage of people may do very well by self management of their money, however, when you realize how complicated the markets have become today, working with a professional, whom you trust, will provide you with more time to make money. Focus on your strengths and find the best trusted people to work with who will handle the other things and success will flow your way. Investment Know-How Kevin Powell economic uncertainties. We are seeing some realization of those expectations as revenues are off for many companies. Corporations have been successfully cutting costs (especially labor) and that’s a

big reason why they are becoming more profitable. Wall Street prefers to see increased sales from higher consumer demand. Even with these tepid results, the markets continued their stellar start. At the end of last week, the S&P 500 was up more than 11 percent in the first four months of the year. There is a warning we should all heed in those reports and that is hiring is not rebounding as quickly as needed to create the jobs our economy requires to post more positive economic results. That was reinforced by a disappointing GDP (Gross Domestic Product) number of 2.5 percent for the first quarter. 2.5 percent is an anemic growth rate and it wasn’t well received by Wall Street as economists were looking for a GDP of 3 percent or more. That followed a woeful revised growth rate of 0.4 percent in the last quarter of 2013. Expect some of these numbers to be changed in coming weeks and that might add a little more clarity. For example, consumer spending remained strong in the first quarter but disposable income fell by 4.4 percent. That will make a lot of folks scratch their heads because

the numbers do not support each other. Experts blame the fact that income declined thanks to higher payroll taxes at the start of the year and the accelerated dividends that were paid in 2012 to beat higher taxes in 2013. If we had less money, that usually means we spend less. Of course we are Americans, so hear our credit cards roar. The next release of consumer debt will help answer this disparity. Many Americans said that they have tried to tighten their belts over the past few years but with unemployment languishing at historically high levels, more and more of us are having to go further into debt. There seems to be a strange cloud hanging over many

economic circles these days. The historical numbers that we rely on to discern where and how to invest our clients assets just haven’t been that good. However, it’s likely that the markets will continue to post positive results as long as central banks around the world pour money into their banking systems. The Federal Reserve has been pumping about one trillion a year into the U.S. economy. The Bank of Japan said they are going to aggressively increase stimulus policies. This was welcomed by financial gurus around the world. Finally, the EU gave hints that they are considering more stimulus and interest rate cuts to try and help pull the Euro Zone out of its current recession. Many investors have missed the past year or more of gains over concerns about the woeful economic news. I strongly recommend that all investors review their situation with their advisors and reallocate your portfolio if warranted. Kevin has been a financial advisor for the past 27 years and can be reached at kpplanner1@aol.com.

The Star’s Desert

If a photograph is a snapshot of a moment in time, then the collected work of internationally famed photographer Michael Childers presents a visual history of celebrity spanning the past halfcentury. But, for one night of the year, Childers’ talents as a producer presents the Desert with a true gift – an ensemble performance by a cast of Broadway and Hollywood stars, each performing one song, for One Night Only. This year’s One Night Only cast, consisting of 28 individual celebrity performers and the Palm Desert High School Choir, featured the music that surrounded the excitement and love of Childers’ life, and contained a film narrated by Childers interspersed among the on-stage performances. Each year, in addition to the ultimate treat of attending the performance, there is a cast party for the entertainers and major event underwriters. This year’s cast party was held at the Rancho Mirage estate of underwriter and Honorary co-chair Helene Galen. Among the other guests noted were the other honorary co-chairs Annette Bloch, Barbara Keller and Harold Matzner along with the event cochairs Barbara Fromm and Terri Ketover, along with Tim Hanlon, representing Wells Fargo Bank, One Night Only’s presenting sponsor. Once again, Michael Childers presented an evening of remarkable performances, creating memories that will last far beyond One Night Only and its wellearned thunderous closing standing ovation. ***** Some children are born with a silver spoon in their month; others receive the gastronomic equivalent. Michael Childers “One Night Only” Story and Photo by Pat Krause

PALM DESERT - Michael Childers presented his Annual One Night Only at the McCallum Theater on Wednesday, Apr. 24. The event benefits Jewish Family services of the Desert. Childers brings top name stars from both the Broadway and world Theatres. Singers, dancers and actors bring a diversity of music to the Stage. Over 20 singers performed with many dancers. Both Opera and Pop singers sang the music of famed songwriters. Dancers flew around stage, both singly and in groups. The One Night Only Dancers performed a hot voodoo number complete with spears and feathers. Tony DeLare played the piano and sang “Take Me to the Pilot.” Lis Callaway sang “From a Distance” while Valerie Perri sang “Don’t Cry for Me Argenian.” Donna Theadore brought down the house with the song “Crazy.” Ann Hampton Callaway sang “I’ll Be Seeing You” with a couple dancers. The Palm Desert High School Choir was part of the performance “Candid.” The whole cast came on stage for the final number while silver streamers came floating down. Carl Remsberg did a fantastic job directing the whole concert. There was an after party at Acqua Pazza California Bistro restaurant. Guests got to mingle with the cast members and compliment then on all the superb performances. A buffet supper was provided by the restaurant. A pre-performance cast party was held at Helene Galen’s Home on Tuesday, Apr. 23. This is a performance everyone wants to see in the Desert. Co-chairs for One Night Only were Annette Bloch, Helene Galen, Barbara Keller, Harold Matzner, Brabara Fromm, and Terri Ketover. Presenting sponsor was Wells Fargo.

François de Mélogue who, for the first solid food his young son ate prepared duck confit with truffle fingerling potatoes. It pays to start training taste buds early; today Mélogue is the Executive Chef of Figue (French for fig) Mediterranean Restaurant in La Quinta, a newly opened restaurant owned by Valley restaurateur Lee Morcus. If Morcus’ name sounds familiar, it should. Morcus and his father started Kaiser Grille in 1992 and have taken the family business to a total of seven highend restaurants, including the Hog’s Breath Inn, purchased from Clint Eastwood. Like all men of vision Morcus, who along with his father and siblings run the Kaiser Restaurant Group, wanted a restaurant all his own; the result is Figue. ‘sharing,’ and everything on the menu is designed to be shared; a replication of the sense of community that is part of the Mediterranean lifestyle. Figue calls their appetizers “Small Dishes,” and they are numerous and mouthwatering, representing a myriad of regional Mediterranean influences. “Big Dishes” refer to the main course, and are also sharable and feature hard-to-find items such as Porchetta, a wood rotisserie Fried Suckling pig and Bourride, a seafood stew. For a melt-inyour-mouth experience, try the Provencal Beef Dauble made with slow

cooked Kobe beef cheeks. All pasta is freshly made in-house, featuring a signatureworthy pasta paella and a fig-covered hand rolled tagliatele with prosciutto and figs among the favorites. One thing you won’t find at Figue: Happy Hour. Our cost of food is too high to reduce the restaurant’s profits with a Happy Hour, says Morcus, who also acknowledged that dinning at Figue is not an inexpensive experience, with one Small Plate and One Big Plate averaging slightly more than $50. But, when you consider the unsurpassed quality of the food at Figue Mediterranean Restaurant, the expertise of its chef, as well as its preparation and service, $50 is little to pay for being transported to Italy … at least for dinner.

Will Virgin America flights become the swingers’ airline of choice? You certainly can make that argument after the airline’s announcement of the launch of “Red™” its first-of-itskind seat-to-seat delivery service. With Red, passengers can now use the airline’s touch-screen seatback personal entertainment platform to send a cocktail, snack or meal to a fellow traveler onboard their flight using a digital seat map. Virgin America already features a seat-to-seat chat platform via its existing Red inflight entertainment platform that allow passengers to send text messengers to other guests on their aircraft. But now, social interaction can be facilitated with alcohol … how unique is that? As part of the launch of Red’s new capabilities, Virgin America is kicking off an online promotion inviting users to share how they are using, or would use, the new “Seat-to-Seat” feature – by introducing their best in-flight pickup lines. Social media submissions of pick-p lines are being collected through May 22nd. The top five entries will be voted on by Virgin America fans, with the top two entries receiving grand prize packages consisting of a moodlit Virgin America flight to Las Vegas from anywhere in the Virgin America U.S. domestic network, a two-night stay in a Terrace Studio at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, dinner for two at a choice of restaurants and VIP entry to the Marquee Nightclub & Dayclub at The Cosmopolitan. Local Business Owner Gives Back to the Community By Jamie Harvey

DESERT HOT SPRINGS – Restaurateur Angelo Avramidis can be found most days working in the kitchen of the Sidewinder Grill on Pierson Blvd., either cooking his heart out or cooking with all his heart. Avramidis has been the Executive Chef and Owner of the Sidewinder Grill for more than 20 years. Lately, he’s been wearing all the hats because his two sons, Dimitri and Michael, who used to help him at the restaurant, have both moved away to start their own families and businesses. The Sidewinder Grill is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Avramidis, however, puts in many more hours for repairs,

At the Sidewinder Grill, Avramidis makes sure the portions are generous and the food tastes good. However, his generosity does not end with his portions. Last Veteran’s Day, Avramidis, a Vietnam War veteran, opened his restaurant to all active and inactive veterans along with their widows/widower for a free turkey dinner with all the trimmings. He plans to make this an annual event, adding valet parking to accommodate any disabled veterans. Testosterone: Cure For “Male Menopause” “Are you tired. Have you lost your edge, your sense of vitality, your “mojo” ? Does sex feel like work, or maybe it doesn’t work out anymore? Is your mood blah? Have you put on a gut

even though you don’t seem to be eating any more that you ever did? Maybe it’s age. Or maybe, just maybe, you have a medical condition called low testosterone or, as I prefer to call it, low T. “If you do, you should know

that treatment of low T has an excellent chance of helping you feel better. Not only do many men experience improvement in their sexual function and return of their old desire for sex, but they also say they feel that their battery has been recharged. They say they feel younger, more vigorous, or ‘the best I’ve felt in years.’ “What’s more, low T is incredibly common. Testosterone levels decline as we age, beginning around thirty-five years of age. By the time a man is seventy years old, there is a 50 percent chance that his T levels will be lower than the lowest values seen for men in their twenties. In men who have diabetes, obesity, hypertension or lung disease, the risk of having low T approaches one in three for men over the age of forty.” “Yet here’s the crazy thing. For the longest time, despite recognizing the symptoms of low T for centuries, very few doctors offered treatment. The diagnosis and treatment have

been part of all standard medical textbooks for several decades, yet there has been a great deal of confusion and a lack of clear guidelines about how to diagnose and hoe to treat low T. For the average man in reasonable health who feels his internal battery has worn down, this has meant that no one, including his own physician, has likely gone to the trouble of determining whether he might have low T.” These are the first paragraphs in an important book published in 2009, “Testosterone For Life.” This book is sub-titled “Recharge Your Vitality, Sex Drive, Muscle Mass & Overall Health” and is written by Abraham Morgentaler, M.D. Dr. Mergentaler is an Associate Clinical Professor at the Harvard Medical School. The natural hormone Testosterone has become an important part of my own program for living longer since it was prescribed for me by my doctor at the Veteran’s Administration hospital at Loma Linda, California. That’s why I want to let the readers of this newspaper know about this valuable book. Its important message is that the declining energy of aging men can be restored by testosterone, just as the declining energy of aging women is restored by supplements of proper female hormones. In Chapter 1, Dr. Morgentaler shares stories from his practice so that the reader can get a feel for the various ways that low T can impact a man and his life. Chapter 2 is devoted to explaining what testosterone is and what it does. Readers may be surprised to learn that testosterone influences boy and girls before and after puberty. Chapter 3 describes the various symptoms caused by low T. Chapter 4 addresses the various blood tests used to diagnose low T and how to interpret them properly. Chapter 5 reviews the benefits of T therapy while Chapter 6 describes the different ways that low T can be treated, either with pills, patches, gels, pellets or injections. (I am using the FDA approved gel called Androgel on a daily basis). Chapter 7 addresses the specific concern regarding testosterone and prostrate cancer that prevents many doctors from prescribing testosterone. For sixty-five years, it had been assumed that raising testosterone will increase the risk of prostate cancer or would make an existing prostate cancer grow more rapidly. As Dr. Morgentaler explains, this idea was not unreasonable. However, recent new research strongly suggests that T therapy is quite safe for the prostate. Chapter 8 covers the risk of T therapies. Chapter 9 is special because it addresses for the first time the difficult

situation of treating low T in prostate cancer survivors. Whether you are a man experiencing low energy and/ or depression, or a woman concerned with the health of the men in your life, or a young man wanting to prevent the symptoms of aging, this is the book for you. For additional information I would also like to recommend a much earlier book on testosterone therapy, “Super T,” written by a good friend of mine in Los Angeles, antiaging specialist Karlis Ullis.. Dr. Ullis, M.D. was a team physician at five Olympic games. ------------------------------Art Kunkin is the 85-year young journalist who founded the alternative weekly newspaper, The Los Angeles Free Press in 1964, became Professor of Journalism at Cal State University Northridge and later became president of the Philosophical Research Society of Los Angeles. LoSing My viRginity By Paul Krassner William M. Gaines was the head of Entertaining Comics, which published a line of crime and horror comics–plus Mad. Here was a comic book that poked creative fun at society in general and comic books in particular. What a kick to see Clark Kent going to a phone booth to change into his Superman outfit, only to find that Captain Marvel was already there. Mad’s mascot was Alfred E. Neuman, a gap-toothed, floppy-eared, dim-witted youngster whose total philosophy consisted of “What – me worry?”My first errand for Mad was to deliver a package to Bob and Ray while they were doing their morning radio show. The night finally arrived when I would get laid for the first time. Because I had no place to take a girl, Bill Gaines gave me a key to his office and permission to use his convertible sofa. My date Joanie and I went to a rehearsal of the Steve Allen show to catch Lenny Bruce. At the time, Elizabeth Taylor was converting to Judaism so she could marry Eddie Fisher, and Lenny’s opening line was a rhetorical question: “Will Elizabeth Taylor be bar mitzvahed?” Then Joanie and I went to the Mad building. Bill Gaines’s office had original paintings of his famous horror characters hung around the walls–the Old Witch, the Crypt

Keeper, the Vault Keeper–and there was also a framed portrait ofAlfred E. Neuman, watching over us while I lost my sexual innocence, just as he had been watching over a whole generation as they lost their cultural innocence. Joanie and I were rolling around on the carpet, kissing and groping and undressing each other. To open the convertible sofa now would interfere with our compulsive spontaneity. I had read so much about Bartholin’s glands, how they lubricate the vaginal cavity and take the friction out of intercourse, but now that I was actually putting my thing into her thing, now that I was sliding around inside another person’s body after fantasizing about it for so many years, it occurred to me to flap my arms like wings to make sure I wasn’t dreaming–but, since my weight was on my elbows, I couldn’t carry out that particular reality check without losing my balance. Joanie and I were beginning to reach that certain point in lovemaking where the voluntary is on the verge of becoming the involuntary. I needed to get the condom which had been residing in my wallet beyond any possible estimated shelf life, so I stopped moving while I still could, and broke the silence with a strained yet noble whisper: “I better put something on.” “Oh, that’s okay,” Joanie said. “You can fuck me without worrying.” I had never heard a girl say the word fuck before, and I was just a little shocked to hear it now, even though we were in the middle of fucking. As our spasms of pleasure mounted and began to overwhelm us, her reply remained in my awareness –You can fuck me without worrying –then suddenly my verbal ejaculation became as inevitable as my physical

ejaculation, and I simultaneously surrendered to both, blurting out, in a voice that was not quite my own, “What–me worry?” Even though I had been in the very throes of orgasm, I still could not resist responding to such a perfect straight-line. 2013 Stagecoach Honky-Tonk story and Photos by Pat Krause

INDIO - Another Stagecoach winner for fans. The record heat was the big news as the heat index was more than 106 for Saturday and Sunday. Fans were wearing less and using spray bottles of water to keep cool. The heat did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the crowds. Each artist filled the three stages every day. Fans would sing along and dance to the music. Fans know the words to these songs. Short shorts, bra tops and cowboy boots could be seen on

most women. The men were bare-chested and wearing flip flops for shoes. The crowds were less this year as there were far more restrictions on RVs and car camping. The heat did not seem to be a factor in smaller crowds. The people that came seemed to be real country western music fans. The restrictions were in place to cut down on the extreme partying and alcoholism. This event is easier to get around as there are walkways to get to the stages. There are only three stages compared to the six stages at Coachella Fest. Fans can

get from one stage to another to see their favorite bands or check out the newer bands. The music goes from blue grass, Hillbilly, and true country to the pop rock style of Western country. Country Legends Don Williams, Charley Pride, Charlie Daniels and Kenny Loggins with the Blue Sky Riders played on Sunday. Actors Jeff Bridges with his band The Abiders, John Reilly and Friends and Katey Segal with the Forest Rangers took time off from acting to come to Stagecoach to perform. Randy Jackson from American Idol introduced his

friend Charley Pride to the crowd. Celebrities mingled with the crowds unnoticed. Other legends performing were Suzy Bogguss, Marty Stuart, Dwight Yoakam and Waddie Mitchell to name just a few. New Country western big names were Trace Adkins, Toby Keith, Dierks Bentley, Lady Antebellum, Thompson Square, Darius Rucker and the final band on Sunday was Zac Brown Band. This can be a family affair as there is the Half Pint Hootnany area for kids, a Ferris Wheel and a BBQ

cookoff. Line Dancing was taught at the Toyota World of Wonder tent. There is something for everyone to be able to have a really good time. Vendors sold out of Stagecoach tank tops on Saturday.

Charity Golf Event Helps families Children INDIO – From soccer to piano lessons, to ballet or art class, there are so many extracurricular options for children here in the valley. But for many families the options don’t matter because they can’t afford all the extras that go along with those activities like cleats, music books, ballet shoes and art supplies. That’s why Rosie Welmas started Rosie’s Kids, a nonprofit organization that helps families afford to enroll their children in the activities they love. On Monday, May 20 Eagle Falls Golf Course will host the 3rd annual Rosie’s Kids charity golf tournament in order to raise money for the nonprofit cause. Entry is $75 per golfer and includes 18-holes of championship golf, lunch, cart with GPS, use of the driving range and practice green, and an ice-filled cooler with water. To sign up or for more information, call (760) 485-4483 or

email Rosie Welmas at rndwelmas@aol.com. Rosie Welmas, founder of Rosie’s Kids, says the organization was started because of the need she saw firsthand while coaching a group of children’s cheerleading squads and the memory of a third grade teacher who helped her family afford extracurricular activities. The organization helps offset the high cost of supplies and helps children to become well-rounded individuals. Eagle Falls Golf Course is part of Fantasy

Springs Resort Casino. The par 72 course is 6,715 yards and was voted a best new course by Golfweek magazine. The resort features a 250room and suite luxury hotel, seven restaurants, rooftop wine bar, world class casino with 2,000 slots and 40 table games, bowling center, nightclub and A-list entertainment nearly every weekend. Fantasy Springs is a privately operated business of the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians.

palate pleasers 16 Still Drooling from Scoma’s Seafood page

By Jackie Devereaux While celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary in San Francisco last weekend, my husband and I decided to only eat fresh seafood during our stay in the City by the Bay. Living in the Palm Springs area offers many culinary delights and we’ve had the good fortune to dine at some of the finest restaurants in the Desert (see past restaurant reviews about Figue Mediterranean, Morgan’s in the desert and Arnold Palmer’s). However, I lived in San Francisco for seven years and learned that the seafood there was, by far, the best in California. We didn’t have to think hard about which seafood restaurant to choose for our special anniversary meal. “There’s really only one place to go,” my husband Tom said, “and that’s Scoma’s.” We booked our table for 6 p.m. on Friday night because we generally go to bed early, but after exploring the city all day, we found ourselves an hour late to the restaurant. Our taxi driver told us not to worry. “They’re really cool at Scoma’s, in fact, it’s the only restaurant in Fisherman’s Wharf that I would take friends and family to,” he said. That statement made us feel a lot better about being late. Scoma’s hostess, Laura, greeted us and said “No worries, your table is ready.” I was shocked because the restaurant was packed. Our server named Han Min told us she was born in Shanghai, China but spoke perfect English. We asked

her what the best thing on the menu was and then let her order for us. Han Min started us off with a pairing of Scoma’s Sautéed Scallops with a Saffron Sauce followed by Dungeness Crab Legs for two ($33). Executive Chef Alan Fairhurst cruised through the restaurant stopping at tables asking diners how everything tasted. When he got to our table, I drooled over the Scallops and Saffron Sauce. I told him the scallops were so good that I wanted to put my face in the dish. Chef Fairhurst laughed then explained they were dry packed and flown in fresh from New Bedford, Massachusetts, and said he had inspected the fishing boats and harvesting of the scallops on a recent trip back East. Chef Fairhurst knows his seafood and has worked at Scoma’s for the past 15 years. While enjoying our scallops and then our crab legs, Nic McGreevy, Scoma’s General Manager visited our table and said he originated from Northern England, but loved living and working in San Francisco. For our entrées both Chef Fairhurst and McGreevy independently recommended the Lazy Man’s Cioppino ($39), one of Scoma’s classic dishes to be shared. The entrée portions are so large that an NFL or NBA player would have trouble finishing it all. We shared each dish and still had plenty to take back to our hotel room where we enjoyed our leftovers during a late night supper. We finished off our romantic diner overlooking Pier 47 splitting a

delicious Tiramisu served with chocolate spoons! If you want a romantic and unforgettable seafood meal in San Francisco, then go to Scoma’s. You’ll tell all your friends about it. For more information, go to scomas.com or call 415-771-4383. Reservations are highly recommended.

iS youR Pet ReADy FoR outDooR weAtheR? When the weather’s nice, many people like to head outdoors – and their pets do, too. Before you let your pet go outside, make sure you’ve taken steps to prevent pests, care for their skin, and know how to spot signs of allergies. Fleas and Ticks: Pets are susceptible to a variety of bugs and pests – especially fleas and ticks. Both should be avoided as fleas can trigger allergies and dermatitis in pets as well as infectious diseases in people and pets. Ticks may also carry diseases that can be harmful to pets. However, in a survey by the American Pet Products Association, only 64 percent of dog owners and 41 percent of cat owners purchased a flea and tick product for their pet last year. Be sure to purchase preventative topical treatments like K9 Advantix® II for dogs only or Advantix® II for dogs or cats to protect your pet. And after pets go outdoors, inspect them carefully for ticks and other insects to ensure their safety. Grooming: A winter indoors often leaves pets with dry skin, tangled fur and a thick undercoat, which begins to shed when the weather warms. A professional grooming salon, like those found in PetSmart stores, will help keep pets cool with services like a bath, brush or hair cut to remove loose hair. Have their skin and coat moisturized with a hypoallergenic conditioner for a softer, shinier coat. Medicated flea and tick baths or spot treatments can also be added for instant relief and to help prevent flea and ticks from returning. Allergies: Warm weather lets loose high amounts of pollen in many areas of the country and since pets can experience allergic reactions to inhaled particles like dust or pollen, pet parents should be on the lookout for signs that their pet may be suffering from allergies. Dr. Simon Starkey, veterinary expert for PetSmart, says you should monitor your pet’s behavior and consult your veterinarian if your pet exhibits reactions such as: • Swelling or irritation of the skin, especially around the eyes, face, head and feet. • Hives, rashes, blisters, clear discharge from eyes or nostrils, sneezing, itching and mild discomfort may also be present. • Pets may also chew on or lick their feet constantly. • Allergy treatment for pets varies based on severity, but usually includes antihistamines and other medications to control the allergic reaction. Cannabis – Pot for Pets?

No matter which side of the fence you plant your opinion, this medicinal weed is creeping into the lives of desperate pet owners everywhere, regardless of what state they live in. Since our companion pets (dogs and cats) have the same natural cannabinoid receptors as us humans, they too can reap the same therapeutic benefits. This fact has opened a brave new world for some free-thinking veterinarians sanctioning its use for their hospice patients, ill pets with poor appetites and those suffering from chronic pain conditions. Championing this cause is Dr. Douglas Kramer, a progressive California veterinarian. Dr. Kramer says his goalis to “provide palliative care and prevent accidental overdoses resulting from owners’ well-meaning attempts to relieve their pets’ pain and suffering.” Dr. Kramer was inspired by his beloved Husky, Nikita, who fought a long battle with cancer. After exhausting every conventional pain control medication and therapy available, Kramer began administering a marijuana tincture to Nikita in a last ditch effort. The results were nothing short of amazing. Within hours of the

first treatment,he witnessed the return of Nikita’s appetite and her moaning ceased entirely. While the cannabis did not cure the cancer, it did afford Nikita several more months of “quality” time with her family. A true believer, Dr. Kramer now dedicates most of his time to informing the veterinary community and pet owners about the therapeutic benefits of medical marijuana (aka MM or MMJ). He offers cannabis consultations – specializing in palliative and hospice care. More info on Dr. Kramer’s website:Enlightened Veterinary Therapeutics. Currently, veterinarians cannot legally prescribe medical marijuana because cannabis remains a Schedule I drug by the FDA. To further this ignorance, many people think of cannabis only in terms of being purchased for recreational use – unaware that special strains have been developed with an eye toward pain control, nausea relief,

and appetite stimulation – all within a zone of safety with minimal to no reported side effects. Not surprisingly, public interest has peaked since the use of cannabis has been decriminalized. As veterinarians, pot has mostly been

on our radar screen in regards to its potential toxicity when the family dog sniffs out the stash or worse yet, pigs out on laced baked goods like cookies or brownies. Please use caution if you are a user and keep it out of the reach of children and pets! Although most of the time owners return home to find a stoner dog – spaced

out, wobbling around, or lethargic –death by overdose can happen. Never administer marijuana to your pet unless you’re under veterinary supervision. When used orally, in precise dosages under proper guidance, this herbal remedy does more good than harm. Plus, cannabis doesn’t adversely impact the liver or other organs, as most drugs do. Not tainted by Big Pharma, I’m giving earthly pot the green light. And kudos to the lawmakers in Washington State – their historic measure to regulate and tax marijuana deserves to be studied as a model of how legalization ought to be designed and implemented. Buffy’s Adventures by Kitty Pallesen Buffy was my first rescued dog over 40 years ago. I had gone with some friends to an old swimming hole in an Iowa pasture called, no kidding, Dog Creek Pond. Right away I spotted a little puppy running around. There were many people swimming that day. I assumed she belonged to someone, but at the end of the day after everyone left, she was still there. Thus began the “adventures with Buffy” stage of my life. She became my loyal

traveling companion and faithful best friend for 17 years. I did many car trips across the country with her head resting on my shoulder from the back seat and her nose out the window smelling everything along the way. Later when I settled down, she went to work with me. When I got my pilot’s license, she accompanied me on every flight, even though there was no window to roll down to catch the wind and the smells. We were inseparable. I once left her behind with a friend in L.A., but she ran away and made her way across city streets, bridges, freeways, hundreds of stop lights and thousands of cars, and back to the beach where we lived at the time. Another time I was visiting my sister in Kansas City on the 4th of July and left her in the house to go view the fireworks. When we got back, Buffy was gone. I drove the streets looking for her for days. A week later I got a call from someone in Eastern Kansas who had found her. Before I could get there, I got another call from the middle of Kansas. I begged these new people to put her in the house and hang on to her, but she jumped from a 2nd story bedroom window

and kept heading West to her California home and, in her mind,

me. I finally caught up to her with the 3rd person who had captured her. Her paws were raw from running. I just hugged her with tears of joy and said, “Come on, Buffy, let’s go for a ride!” She made it faithfully by my side until my son was 4 years old. Then her arthritis got so bad that she could no longer stand up to go outside. I carried her in and out for a long time after that until I realized that my faithfulness and loyalty to her would not allow me to let her suffer any more. I buried her in the back yard with

my heart full of the unforgettable memories and adventures we had together – a little rescued puppy from Dog Creek Pond who became my best friend for 17years. “Saving one dog’s life won’t change the world, but it does change the world for that one dog!” Excerpted from www. ArieS: You find yourself interested in your possessions while observing what your habits are. You’re also concerned

with the crisis of the times. You know you have a strong will to get through any experiences, especially difficult ones. It will be good to ask your Soul what your life needs, what you want to be doing in the next five years, and where that will be. You must realize both your and humanity’s needs. To initiate new realities.

TAURUS: It’s important to not alienate others as you continue to research the needs of the future, preparing in all ways for that unexpected future. You can at times be impatient. This will eventually create unhappiness. You need to become more sensitive, have more tact and learn cooperation. Many people lag behind you mentally. Many people look to you for direction. A leader must have love along with leadership when giving direction. Open your heart more. Listen more. GEMINI: When we don’t have clear goals we can feel worried by vague uncomfortable anxieties. We can feel our life is not orderly and not in control of our precious life. Perhaps you are experiencing this. It would be good to create small useful goals each morning. Make them simple so you can see the results. This small task focuses the mind, develops orderliness and confidence. Our lives are enriches. Saturn’s task of structure. CANCER: Do not continue to worry. Instead, create your own path of creative endeavors and focus on that path without fear for self or family. Be loving, always, consciously. Attempt to praise and recognize the talents and gifts of others. Everyone is unique. Don’t ration your feelings of care or your heart will close. Choose self-confidence, balance and happiness. Listen to the crickets, frogs and birds of the night. LEO: Careful these days. You can take your responsibilities a bit too seriously and this can lead to a stressful inner environment. It is good to rely on others, giving them responsibilities. This provides you time and relaxation. Allow others to excel, let them know you value them. In this way you achieve all the control you seek and you are no longer vulnerable. There is more to you than ambitions. Family, gardens and home vivify your life of gold. VIRGO: It’s important to never have

judgments, beliefs or opinions without deep research leading to actual facts. There must also be a precious compassion within your heart at all times. This will protect you from fear, from daily life pressures and aloneness. True communication does not include dogma. It has dialogue, curiosity and a Socratic way of asking question. This generates social grace that sensitizes everyone. Happiness follows.

LIBRA: Sometimes we Librans define our worth and values in relation to those we love and are close to. Then we find we must flee (run away), create a separation, seek solace in being alone to find ourselves again. To ask what are our own values, needs, hopes and wishes? We try to establish self-worth and confidence on our own. We support others so much and so often, we don’t know how to tend to ourselves. Patiently, begin to define your own goals. They are there. Hidden. Wrapped in gold. SCORPIO: Do not hesitate to express your wishes to others. Do not try to hide them. Instead, begin conversations on how everyone you know expresses themselves and their needs. And that you want to learn how to do this, too. Safely. Often you don’t express feelings, protecting yourself. As you should. However, you could also become alienated within those feelings. Who can you trust? What are your feelings today? ‘ SAGITTARIUS: It’s time to stop worrying. To find the silver lining in all that you do. You will be, and you are always, all right, all the time. Even in difficulty. Like God is good, all the time. There’s a “big picture”. You’re part of it. You’re good and compassionate. Sometimes you’re humble. Sometimes not. Rules, details and fears that you’re not doing things perfectly upset your balance. You’re perfect and not perfect. They are the same. Imagination saves you. CAPRICORN: Capricorns tend to be traditional, to present a face to the world that “everything’s good.” However, there are times when tradition isn’t who you are. When you are unique, unusual. It’s important to be unique. Always leaders must act differently, following the beat of a different set of drums (responsibilities). You’re challenged to be part of a group while not relinquishing your distinctive identity. It’s a test.

AQUARIUS: Notice your commitment and perseverance, moving you steadily towards achievement. Keep going with whatever you are doing while also continuing to outline goals. Goals change. Allow yourself to have foolish goals. Keep your eyes on the target. Tend to others especially those who never ask. Give and give. Give shelter. Be disciplined. Independence develops your authority. Happiness finds you. PISCES: As your sensitivity becomes more acute, you see more into the essential nature of others. You wonder about your spiritual mission, life’s adventure. You’re in a relative time of luck, good things happening, good fortune. Not like a fortune cookie. But a time of unlimited opportunity and possibilities. Traveling is illuminating. Writings are accepted. Maintain values and ethics when challenged. When your gifts are not recognized, walk away. Other doors open.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder`s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which
