One Night Only Concert

Jason Graee and the Cats dancers. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Michael Childers proudly produced his 14th annual production of One Night Only that was held at the McCallum Theatre again this year. The theme for this year’s concert was Broadway Show Stoppers. Over twenty award-winning Broadway and Hollywood performers

graced the McCallum stage on April 14th. This is one of the most significant highlighted events in the Desert each year. The show was dedicated to Barbara Keller who lost her battle against cancer. She was also a founding member of One Night Only. All of these performers donate their time and their

incredible talents to do this show. Many singers come each year to be a part of this event and the charity it supports. This year all of the proceeds went to the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center. This is always a sold out concert way in advance. Choreographer Larry Fuller directed the show, and the musical director

was Christopher Marlowe. Many concert lovers consider this the show of the year. Honorary co-chairs were Helene Galen, the famous Barry Manilow, Garry Kief, Harold Matzner and in memoriam, Barbara Keller. The Event co-chairs were Barbara Fromm and Terri Ketover. The Executive Producer was

Ken Katz, and co-producer was Nancy Downer. It takes a lot of people to put on an extravaganza like this. There is a big difference between singers from Broadway and Hollywood than the pop stars of concerts today. The performance of their songs Continues on Page 7

Denise DuBarry Hay’s gets her Star Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Walk of Stars held a dedication placement of Denise DuBarry Hay’s Star. The Star was placed on the corner of Tahquitz Canyon and Palm Canyon Drive across from Starbucks restaurant. Several hundred people sat in chairs, stood or took seats at the corner restaurant. Speakers included her sister Suzanna DuBarry, Harold Matzner, Patti Gribow and more. Her daughter Whitney spoke about what a wonderful mother she was and her son asked for a moment of silence to remember a special moment everyone could remember with Denise.

A special treat for the guests was when her friend Patricia Welch sang her favorite song. A few tears were shed then when Mayor Robert Moon gave his husband Bill a plaque to commemorate the day. Denise had opened two Bikram Yoga studios. Her friend Rajashree Choudhury spoke about her love of Bikram Yoga and living a healthy lifestyle. The friends and family that spoke told of what a charming and energetic person she was. She wore many hats as an actress, philanthropist, restauranteur, nutritionist, movie producer, wife and mother, yoga instructor and business owner. She led

an extraordinary life. Her Husband Bill and her children, Whitney, Kyle, and Adam were in attendance also. Denise and her husband were big supporters of Olive Crest, and Olive Crest speakers told of all the vital work they did to support that charity. She was a member and past president of Palm Springs Women in Film and Television. PSWIFT brought a huge basket of white roses in her honor and gave each guest attending one of the roses to remember the occasion and her. Her Star was then unveiled, and guests took photos and offered condolences to her family for her loss.

Tim Disney on His Film – “William” and Family Matters WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

going to get “William” 2? Tim: Spoiler alert. I have no comment. (Laughs) That said, now that I’ve finished this film, I really want to make another one. I’ve been re-infected. (Laughs)

In the Disney tradition Tim Disney is a filmmaker with an assortment of documentaries and narrative films under his directing belt. Photo: Courtesy Photo In Part 1, Tim Disney’s “royal” lineage was laid out. To recap, he is the son of Roy Edward Disney, grandson of Roy O and Edna and greatnephew of Walt and Lillian. In the family tradition, he has produced documentaries on the environment as well as directing and writing independent narrative films. We spoke at length about his latest film William, which could be categorized as a sci-fi family drama about two scientists who decide to create a Neanderthal child by extracting DNA from a 35,000-year-old preserved specimen. The story covers the development of William from infancy through adulthood and stars Will Brittain in the key role. The cast includes Maria Dizzia, Walled Zuaiter, Susan Park, Callum Airlie, Beth Grant, and Paul Guilfoyle. The following exclusive interview has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes. PART 2: Why do you like directing? Tim: When I’m directing, I can’t think about anything else. I find it a relief to be completely occupied with one thing because then I can’t think about myself. It’s fun. It’s the most stimulating, challenging, exciting thing. I’m so blessed that I get the opportunity to direct from time to time.

Tim: I got a chance to work in the animation department as a young person, which had a big effect on me. What you learn from that is how to tell stories without words. It’s always better to tell a story without words if you possibly can. It’s like writing without adjectives. You have to really distill the story to its essence, always striving to create a scene where nobody sells anything. Getting back to the film for a moment. It’s kind of a cliffhanger. Are we

You chose to be an independent filmmaker. Why no studios? Tim: I’m not saying I would never work with a studio; it just has never worked out that way. Also, I’ve always pursued other businesses, and so I never made a full-time profession out of moving making. Maybe I should have, or maybe I never could have. I don’t really know. It’s just how it’s worked out. It takes a couple of years to make a movie, so you have to make sure it’s something you really feel strongly about. The last seven or eight years I focused a huge amount of my time working on arts and arts education programs. It’s been very rewarding, and I’ve met some wonderful people along the way. The name Disney. What’s the upside and what’s the downside? Tim: It’s such a global brand. It’s one of the most recognizable names on earth. It would be like being name Tim Coca Cola. I got to be exposed to amazing things and got to meet really interesting people, and I’m grateful for all of that. I guess the negative is not being anonymous. I can’t use my credit card without someone asking me about what’s it like being a Disney. That’s a little intrusive at times. I respect

that people are interested. Most of the feedback I get is positive. People share their memories about movies they saw or trips to Disneyland. I do my best to honor that for them. I would never say “quit bugging me. I don’t care about your happy memories.” That would be rude. My dad said to me one time that you have a name you can be proud of rather than to be ashamed of.

What was it like growing up as a young Disney? Tim: Like any kid, you just live in the world that you were born into. It was normal to me. The Disney family were mid-western people. My grandfather Roy and his brother Walt were essentially covered, wagon people. Roy died when I was very young, but I have very early childhood but hazy memories of him. My grandparents were big figures in our lives. They were straightforward, direct, honest, loving, kind, decent, people. I still run into people these many years later who knew them or interacted with them and speak so highly of my grandparents. That’s a beautiful legacy. How is the Disney brand different from the days when it was familyowned and run? Tim: Disney now is an enormous corporation. Walt could never have imagined what it would become. It is no longer a family company. I have the name, and I think that entitles me to a cranky opinion and nothing else. In terms of shareholders, it’s widely

held and is too big for any individual to have complete control. I have immense respect for Bob Eiger and the job he’s done running the company. He’s a good person, and he understands the importance of maintaining the brand as a trusted name that stands for something real and trustworthy.

What about your personal life? Do you have time to date or are you in a relationship? Tim: I’m a single dad. I have three kids - 23,18 and 7. Two of them are boys, and I know about boys. And, I have a little girl. They split their time between their fantastic mom and me. My daughter has really changed my life. Having a kid later in life is really a good thing. Sometimes I see my contemporaries who are able to travel. I can’t really do that. What would I do if I had more time? Surf the internet? There isn’t anything I’d rather do with my time than to be with my daughter. I’m old enough now to savor her more, and I’m more patient than I used to be. In the past, putting kids to bed was like being taken, hostage. My older one wouldn’t let me leave the bed until he was asleep and would feel me if I tried to get up. Now, as long as it takes for her to fall asleep is all good. When I was younger, I was in a hurry. Not now. It’s been delightful getting to know you. The best of luck with your film and of course your role as dad. Tim: Thank you.

New Bill Urges NC Fisheries to “Let ‘Em Spawn”

By Desert Star Staff CHARLOTTE, N.C. – North Carolina’s fish stocks are dwindling, and new legislation aims to increase the populations of certain fish species harvested in commercial and recreational fisheries. Marine fisheries currently operate by catching as many fish as possible, and millions of young fish often are killed before they’ve had a chance to reproduce. Consequently, populations of Atlantic croaker, gray trout and other soughtafter commercial and recreational fish populations have been depleted. House Bill 483, known as “Let ‘Em Spawn Before They Are Gone,” would require fisheries to protect some species of juvenile fish until 75 percent of them have the chance to reproduce, or spawn. Tim Gestwicki, chief executive of the North Carolina

Wildlife Federation, says if the state doesn’t act, there will be no more fish left to catch. “We have too many juvenile fish being caught in our sounds that don’t have the chance to reproduce or spawn and grow to maturity,” he points out. “There has been a lot of vitriol and battles between the recreational and commercial fishing sectors, and therefore nothing’s been done, and our fisheries continue to decline.” Co-sponsored by Roxboro Republican Larry Yarborough and nearly two dozen other legislators, House Bill 483 would establish a minimum size limit for fish maturity in each historically essential species. Supporters of the bill say the new rule would allow fish to spawn at least once before being harvested, and over time could reverse the decline in fish stock. Gestwicki says for decades North Carolina’s marine fisheries have been steadily shrinking

The new legislation would require marine fisheries to let some fish species reach maturity before they can be harvested. (Adobe Stock) because of lax fisherymanagement regulations. “If you look at gray trout, spot, Atlantic croaker, southern flounder and kingfishes, we’ve experienced an 83 percent decline in catches and landings of those species in the past 20 years,” he states. “The state has simply got to implement

fisheries management that is going to solve this problem.” Many coastal communities rely on the fishing industry for tourism and employment. In 2017, commercial fishing operations harvested nearly 20 million pounds of fish and shellfish. Recreational harvests

were slightly higher, at around 24 million pounds, according to the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries. Disclosure: North Carolina Wildlife Federation contributes to our fund for reporting on Climate Change/ Air Quality, Energy Policy, Environment, Water.

Mid-Session OR Lawmakers Making Climate Action Major Priority

By Desert Star Staff SALEM, Ore. – A little more than halfway through the session, advocates for action on climate change see a lot of potential in the Oregon State Legislature. Environmental and clean

energy groups got their first significant victory in March when lawmakers passed a bill banning offshore oil drilling, and a bill banning fracking is still on the table. But Zach Baker, Oregon policy manager with the

organization Climate Solutions, says the most ambitious legislation, the Clean Energy Jobs bill, could determine this session’s legacy on climate action. House Bill 2020 would require large polluters to

buy credits for greenhouse gas emissions and place a cap on emissions that would decrease over time. “Passing the Clean Energy Jobs bill would be the most ambitious climate program in Oregon’s history, and the Legislature has been working on this for several years and is poised this year to pass the bill,” Baker stresses. Baker says an amendment to the bill would ensure funds from the greenhouse gas credits would be invested in communities most affected by climate change, including communities of color, tribes, rural communities and to help low-income families. Critics of the bill say it could hit consumers hard, increasing energy prices, particularly for gasoline. Lawmakers also are considering another

By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Legislature is considering bills that would make it easier for people to get some of their healthcare services – possibly including eye care – online. The “telehealth” bills help doctors use technology to provide services to patients remotely. It’s a significant change that has many industry groups at odds over the regulatory framework. However, supporters say the expansion should include

ocular telehealth or online eye care. They say it can provide affordable and muchneeded access to people in hard-to-reach communities. Mari Corugedo, Florida state director of the League of United Latin American Citizens – or LULAC, says her group supports the idea. “Sometimes online, you can get deals as long as you have a prescription, and it doesn’t eliminate the doctor,” says Corugedo. “It just makes it a little more accessible for people

to be able to fulfill those prescriptions and needs.” But industry groups like the American Optometric Association have been lobbying against ocular telehealth, citing safety concerns and that inperson comprehensive eye exams should remain the gold standard. For now, efforts to restrict the online options have been removed from the Florida bills as other differences are being hammered out by lawmakers. The American Academy

of Ophthalmology, which represents medical doctors, says it supports telehealth as a means to expand the physician-patient relationship beyond the exam room. Linda Sherry, director of national priorities with the group Consumer Action, says safeguards would remain in place when being checked by a doctor online, who can ultimately decide whether an in-person visit is necessary. “If you think about it, this is pushing in on the gravy train of optometrists, because

innovative bill. Baker says Gov. Kate Brown included in her budget a proposal to create a new state agency called the Oregon Climate Authority that would focus on addressing climate change and the transition to clean energy. “It would be the first state agency in the country to focus exclusively on climate change, and we think it could elevate the importance of climate in state government and provide better coordination among state agencies to address the climate crisis,” he states. Legislators also are looking at bills that would aid the transition to electric vehicles and expand renewable energy, such as rooftop solar. The session is scheduled to adjourn at the end of June.

optometrists would love to have you back in the office for a full-scale exam, even though that may only be a year from when you got your eyes tested,” says Sherry. Both the Florida House and Senate are moving closer to an agreement on their telehealth bills. For instance, the House version would establish permanent tax credits for insurers and Health Maintenance Organizations, while the Senate wants to offer the loans for a limited time.

Photo of dead leopard sparks outrage against a big game hunter

Female hunter ‘Britany L’ is in the crosshairs of Anonymous, animal activists, and celebrities for killing a leopard. Pic: Safari Club International By Desert Star Staff A big game hunter is the target of a hate campaign after a photo of her posing with a “record” leopard kill went viral. Anonymous posters and multiple celebrities have slammed ‘Britany’ on social media for her “disgusting” act. The photo of the woman, who has been referred to only as ‘Britany L,’ was shared with Safari Club International (SCI) earlier this month. SCI is a US-based organization that protects hunters’ rights while still promoting wildlife conservation. The image has

sparked global outrage, with SCI claiming in a blog post that Britany L’s slain male big cat could be the ninth largest leopard ever hunted. The photo went viral after David Bonnouvrier – cofounder of Knot on my Planet, an organization working to stop elephant poaching for the ivory trade – shared the picture on Instagram. “A very large male Leopard recently killed by Britany L. [who is a] member of the safari club international based in Tucson AZ,” Bonnouvrier said, before calling on social

media to “find this b***h” and to “call [SCI] and give them a piece of your mind.” Bonnouvrier’s photo quickly spread across social media like wildfire – with big-name celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Dutch supermodel Doutzen Kroes and Kyle Richards piping up to voice their disapproval at Britany L’s pastime. “How can you find pride and pleasure in killing a beautiful animal like this large male Leopard. The woman in the picture should be ashamed of herself! I find

this disgusting, and I’m so upset, sad and angry that this still happens!!” Kroes wrote, with Richards chiming in to add “I know this is upsetting to see but if we don’t speak up this will never stop.” South African Wildlife artist Sue Dickinson has dubbed Britany L a”cretin,” with the clandestine activist group Anonymous echoing Dickinson’s sentiments. Britany L is the latest grinning killer to be publicly shamed online for taking part in game hunting. In July, photos of American hunter Tess

Thompson Talley posing next to a giraffe that she had killed in South Africa, sparked outrage. A white American savage who is partly a neanderthal comes to Africa and shoot down a very rare black giraffe courtesy of South Africa stupidity,” Twitter account Africa Digest said, sharing images of Talley and calling on its followers to share. The post was retweeted more than 48,500 times and was liked nearly 30,000 times, with thousands more expressing their rage at her victory-style photos in the comments.

all the more intense by a significant transmission delay, with Thomson pointing to the camera, yelling that Morgan had no idea how the culling impacted him. “It’s very easy for you to sit in an armchair in London and not have to contend with what the African people have to contend with,” Thomson argued. Naturally, the heated exchange evoked an angry response from animal lovers and viewers who, for once, appeared to be firmly on Morgan’s usually controversial side of the debate. “It’s not often I agree with anything @ piersmorgan has to say but in this case well said and well done on taking on this hideous man,” wrote one user.

Hunter who killed 5,000 elephants blasted by Piers Morgan

By Desert Star Staff Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan was embroiled in a heated exchange on live television during his interview with an animal hunter who boasted about killing more than 5,000 elephants.

Morgan was interviewing Zimbabwean big game hunter Ron Thomson via video link on Monday morning’s show. The hunter admitted to feeling “nothing” while killing more than 5,000 elephants, along with 800 buffalo, up to 60 lions, roughly 50 hippos

and about 40 leopards. Thomson, who denied being a trophy hunter, compared his career choice to that of a brain surgeon, explaining that he would never allow emotions to cloud his judgment while on the job. “I felt nothing. If I had got

emotionally involved in what I was doing, I would never have been able to get my job done,” said Thomson to Morgan and his co-host Susanna Reid. In the interview, the animal hunter fought back against Morgan’s questioning and insisted he didn’t enjoy killing the elephants and claimed the government-funded culling is necessary to control the animals which he claimed are damaging national parks in South Africa. Thomson also denied that elephants are facing extinction, despite their plummeting population being widely documented. The live conversation took a turn for the combative, however, when Morgan described Thomson’s “detached” language as barbaric. A shouting match ensued, which was made

By Desert Star Staff A new survey of nearly 400 Kentuckians finds that student loans are the number one cause of financial hardship for respondents. Other reasons for experiencing financial hardship include medical debt, rent, payday lending, credit cards, and car payments. Most of the survey participants were women, and 26 percent said they were survivors of domestic violence. Andrea Miller, director

of Economic Empowerment Programs for the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence, led the survey, conducted at mobile tax preparation sites in Morehead, Maysville, and Somerset. She says women often stay in an abusive relationship for economic reasons. “We have survivors who, if they are working, their partner takes their pay, gives them an allowance or just controls all the household finances,” Miller explains. “That might be

even just a disability check. We might have a survivor that’s on a disability benefit that the partner controls.” Each tax season, Miller and a team of volunteers set up free, pop-up tax preparation services across the state. This year, her team brought nearly $700,000 in federal tax refunds back to residents. Miller points out tax season is a time to get organized and take advantage of any income tax credits for which individuals might be eligible.

Using tax refunds to pay bills or boost a savings account can set women on a path toward financial independence. “I have one client – she went through our homeownership program – and she uses her tax refund every year to pay her mortgage up, which is great because she works an hourly job and she worries about not having enough hours to keep her mortgage payment up, so she pays herself ahead,” Miller relates.

Move More Month: Healthy Habits Can Start at Work

The American Heart Association suggests taking a walk during lunch to get in more exercise during the workday. (Chuck Taylor/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff TACOMA, Wash. — It’s Move More Month, and health advocates say the workplace is a perfect spot for people to

think about building a healthy routine. Many people spend the workday sitting down, but health experts say there are a lot of opportunities during

the day to move around. The American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good initiative suggests taking a walk during lunch, using the

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump has announced his administration will stop ratification of the UN Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) and withdraw from it, calling it “badly misguided” and a threat to American freedoms. The UN will soon receive “formal notice that America is rejecting this treaty,” Trump said on Friday, speaking at the National Rifle Association (NRA) convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. “I will sign right now, in front of a lot of witnesses, a message asking the Senate to discontinue the treaty ratification process, and to

return the now-rejected treaty to me, to the Oval Office, where I will dispose of it.” The ATT is a multilateral arms control agreement that regulates the international weapons trade. It was signed by US President Barack Obama in 2013, but never ratified by the Senate to become US law. Conservative groups such as the NRA have voiced opposition to the treaty for years, arguing that its regulations seek to bypass the Second Amendment to the Constitution and impose domestic gun bans in the US. The ATT’s stated goal is to “reduce human suffering

caused by illegal and irresponsible arms transfers” and promote “accountability and transparency by state parties concerning transfers of conventional arms.” While its proponents say the ATT does not impact a signatory state’s domestic gun control laws or firearms ownership policies, it does require members to “establish and maintain a national control system,” run by “competent national authorities.” Some 130 countries have signed the treaty, and it is currently force in 100 of them, according to the UN.

stairs instead of the elevator, and treating exercise as an essential meeting by adding it to the calendar. Chad Major, an exercise specialist at MultiCare Health System in Tacoma, said people could use Move More Month to examine their habits, but folks shouldn’t be too critical of themselves. “Use examination as a tool for success, not as a tool to critique and kind of like, ‘Oh, I should be doing this, I should be doing this, but I’m not,’” Major said. “Use it as a way to, like, ‘Oh, I can do this now, and this is a new avenue for me to be able to take advantage of that.’ Positive mindsets always have better success.” The American Heart Association suggest adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise.

Major said if step-counting or watching the number of minutes spent exercising holds you accountable, you should do it. But he added the important thing is making sure you’re moving, no matter how long. He also noted 150 minutes of exercise might not happen the right way, but even short activities add up. “Just do a little bit at a time and build on it,” he said. “It’s like any habit. Habits don’t happen overnight. They take some time to form. So start forming some good habits.” Moving more and sitting less has many health benefits, including lowered risks of heart disease and diabetes. It also can lead to better sleep and fewer bouts of insomnia, fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety and a host of other positive effects.

Protecting Cities from Rising Water By Ziqian Cecilia Dong Across the country, policymakers are scrambling to protect their communities from the effects of climate change. In January, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker proposed real-estate tax increases to fund dam and drainage system upgrades, which would help residents cope with floods and storms. Meanwhile, a few months earlier, officials from several Florida counties agreed to work together to minimize the damage caused by rising sea levels. Adaptation efforts like these are crucial. Four in ten Americans live in coastal areas -- and this population will surge in the coming years. Sustained flooding can cripple homes and infrastructure like roads, bridges, subways, and wastewater treatment plants. Policymakers have limited

time and resources. So, they should rely on the latest computer modeling and other technologies to identify and implement the most efficient adaptation strategies. Rising water levels have already wrought havoc across the country. From 2000 to 2015, coastal “sunny day flooding,” or flooding caused by high tides rather than storms, more than doubled on the Southeast Atlantic coast, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association. And it increased 75 percent on the Northeast Atlantic coast. Climate change is making storms more destructive and frequent by heating ocean waters and increasing flooding. The United States experienced its most expensive hurricane season in history in 2017 -- storms caused more than $300 billion in damages.

The NRA, In the Red and In Crisis

Oliver North, just announced he wouldn’t serve another term after an ugly public split with its long-time chief executive. Anna Massoglia, a researcher with the Center for

Responsive Politics, a politicalspending watchdog, said its most recent tax returns show the NRA is badly in the red. “We saw a $55 million decline in income since the prior year, and the NRA spending into an $18 million deficit - a deficit that they have for now the second straight year,” Massoglia said. “And so, we’re seeing the NRA pretty consistently now spending more than they’re taking in.” The NRA is suing the company that runs its troubled broadcast arm, NRATV. And an article in the New Yorker magazine alleged culture of huge salaries and extravagant spending among NRA officers and vendors. A lawyer for the group said the article was written by a paid staff of an “anti-gun magazine.” According to the article, executives at the company named in the lawsuit - public relations firm Ackerman McQueen - have all but run

the NRA for their benefit for decades. A lawyer for the firm also said the New Yorker article is entirely untrue. Massoglia said she couldn’t judge the merits of the lawsuit. But she said the NRA’s tax documents show that a different vendor - a fundraising company - made millions off its work for the gun-rights group. “They kept over half of the money they had fundraised - they had made about $10 million and kept over $5 million of that,” she said. “And so, you are seeing a variety of different vendors potentially profiting off of the NRA.” Speeches and public statements at the annual NRA convention largely avoided the lawsuit. The group continues to take a combative stance against long-time foes in the gun-control movement and the political left. Its charitable status is under investigation in New York, and its board is expected to address the leadership issue this week.

— Kevin S. Gillespie (@ KevinSGillespie) April 27, 2019 In the manifesto, Earnest reportedly admits setting a nearby mosque on fire a month before. The mosque was defaced with spray-painted

graffiti making reference to the New Zealand attack. Police told NBC they are now working to confirm if Earnest might have been behind the arson, which did not lead to any casualties and caused only minor damage.

Earnest allegedly wrote on Reddit that he was planning to stream his shooting live on Facebook, but the plans reportedly fell apart after Facebook froze his account.

According to its most recent publicly available tax returns, the National Rifle Association is millions of dollars in the red, for the second straight year. (Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Rifle Association’s leadership is in turmoil, it’s in severe financial trouble and issuing a prominent, long-

time vendor for allegedly overcharging the organization. The nation’s leading gun-rights group has also been a vital political force for decades. But its president,

By Desert Star Staff John T. Earnest has been named as the gunman who opened fire on worshipers inside the Chabad of Poway synagogue, killing one woman. He reportedly cited the New Zealand mosque attack as his inspiration. The man behind the deadly rampage on Saturday afternoon that left one person dead and three injured has been identified as John T. Earnest, a 19-year-old white male from San Diego, Sheriff Bill Gore said. Gore said that Earnest is not known to have any previous criminal record. The sheriff added that apart from going through the trail of digital evidence left by the attacker, police will also search his car and residence. They are also looking into a possible link between the suspect and a mosque fire in Escondido, which is just a 20-minute drive from Poway. Update #9 @SDSheriff Gore: We are serving search warrants for the suspect’s home, car and the Chabad of Poway. We are also working with @FBISanDiego, @ ATFHQ & @EscondidoPolice to check John Earnest’s possible involvement in the arson and vandalism of mosque in @Escondido_CA. — San Diego Sheriff (@ SDSheriff) April 28, 2019 Both President Donald Trump and Poway Mayor Steve Vaus denounced the attack as an apparent hate crime. A manifesto, which some believe was penned by the attacker and published shortly before he went on a shooting spree inside the temple on Saturday, has been circulated on social media.

Gore acknowledged that police have been combing through the suspect’s social media posts and an “open letter” he allegedly wrote in the run-up to the attack, but said that officers have yet to prove the authenticity of the purported evidence. “We have copies of his social media posts and his ‘open letter’ and will be reviewing those to determine the legitimacy of it and exactly how it plays into the investigation,” he said. The eight-page document, which has since been reviewed by several media outlets, bears striking similarities to the manifesto attributed to the Christchurch mosque attacker, and cites him as an inspiration. The manifesto is written in the form of a questionnaire with the author answering his own questions about ideology, and his attitude to religion and terrorism. Filled with anti-Semitic slurs and racist rants, the manifesto blames “Jewry” for “sealing the doom” of the European race. The author, who introduces himself as a “man of European ancestry” and “a descendant of one of the original colonists,”says that although he as an “individual” may kill only a small number of Jews, he hopes that his grim act would inspire others “to take a stand.” See this thread for the #Poway shooter manifestothis crap is terrible. I’m posting to give insight into this demented way of thinking to sound the alarm bells. WARNING: Multiple uses of epithets and racism throughout. HOROSCOPES ARIES

Although considered rather unpredictable, you also have traditional, stable, responsible and detailed aspects and these help you maneuver the outer world. Few, except astrologers, may know this about Aries. Those qualities are being internally recognized so you can recognize your value and worth. You know it’s not how much money you have. It’s more about perseverance, reliability and being steadfast in adversity and challenges. You’re learning.

TAURUS Patience and deliberateness help you assess anything new, thinking everything through with step by step care. You’re also visionary, continually developing an illumined mind, influenced by the Pleiades, Aldebaran and Alcyone (stars in the Pleiades) to bring forth the wisdom of the Buddha. When faced with a monetary situation you instinctively choose the right path. These are your gifts. Recognize them with gratitude.

GEMINI It’s most important that your work in the world aligns with your sense of values. Gemini is a complex, dual sign. You have a fluid mind. Much information must be filtered through your emotions. Therefore, that field (astral, emotional) must be clear, pure, no judgments, criticisms or opinions. This must be developed. You’re

MAY 1 – 7, 2019 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

the sign of hidden treasures. Security for you isn’t wealth. It’s who and what you love.

CANCER There’s a challenge now for you to emerge from under your Cancer shell, have a sense of adventure, step beyond comfort and focus upon things artistic and cultural. What would that be for you? Build your greater sense of love, heart to heart, with others. It will expand self-expression and creativity, what you really seek. Then you must also have a sense of fun. What is fun for you?

LEO Most Leos are charming. Some are hidden. But all are magnetic - an important quality to understand because it attracts others to you. When aware of this you’re either kind and compassionate or you misuse your power if your power doesn’t include Love. What are people seeking when encountering you? Light, intelligence, playfulness, vitality, discipline, direction and the willingness to Love. Do you have (and understand) these qualities to give?

VIRGO While you display order, discipline and list after list of new ideas, you must now add diplomacy. Along with tact, refinement, and how to relate with ease, compassion, right timing and Right Relations. Be aware that these are actual

seeds planted within all of humanity. For Virgo they lead later to the art of cooperation and conciliation through the art of negotiation. You’re learning the qualities of Libra.

LIBRA Your smile invites others to talk about themselves, share joys and sorrows, be friends with you. Libra when directed by the Soul, brings forth Right Relations, fairness, justice, openness and kindness to all interactions. Visualize yourself stepping into the Soul’s light. The results will strengthen all abilities, especially your tasks of creating harmony and loving more. Which then magnetizes even more love and resources your way.

SCORPIO As life continuously challenges you to transform and regenerate, you also ask (quietly demand) this of others. Because your life has such intensity, you must schedule consistent times for solitude, contemplation, rest and retreat – times to gather strength, rediscover inner meaning and self-purpose. That time is now. Vision is here, too. Only a few know that as you die (metaphor) each day to the past, future visions also come forth.

SAGITTARIUS Although you usually view life with optimism and a broad hopeful vision and because you’re an imaginative thinker

who sees signs and reads oracles in every situation, you also have a sense of being dutiful, responsible, traditional and conservative. These can hide behind unwavering enthusiasm. Working under time limits, rules and regulations, you have a very serious side. Value this as it’s your discipline as well as your wisdom.

CAPRICORN You exhibit great control, discipline, structure and reserve, often playing the role of the eldest child or wise parent. Traditions, following or creating them, are therefore most important. But there’s another valuable part to you –being progressive and inventive. Aware of the future, you’re quite different than most. Sometimes people can’t quite understand your abilities to change quickly and to offer everyone freedom to be (you and me). Remember?

AQUARIUS

life. Value your differentness. It’s unique and precious.

PISCES The two signs most misunderstood are Scorpio and Pisces. Often the fish is seen as wandering about, too idealistic and sensitive, seemingly lost, dreamy and confused. But there’s more to Pisces. They’re also brave and courageous when someone’s in danger. They’re independent, seers of potential, rewarding others for their innate gifts, which most cannot see. When spontaneous, a light fills the air. When sad there’s despair. Pisces observes, then acts. It brings them freedom and it saves the world. Pluto rules Pisces on the Soul level. It’s important to acknowledge that, ruled by Uranus, you’re different than most. Why? Aquarius streams through Uranus which is tipped on its side. The atmosphere of Uranus is arranged in layers of clouds, its magnetic-tail twisted into a long corkscrew, the source of its magnetic field unknown. Uranus is blue/ green, has a moon, many rings and satellites, seventh planet from the Sun and 3rd largest planet in the solar system. This unusual planet rules your entire

E N T E RTA I N M E N T

BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

Clint Eastwood’s “The Mule” Now On DVD Award-winning actor/ director Clint Eastwood first entered the scene on May 31, 1930, in California. He’s still going strong, and at age 88 he completed his 90th film “The Mule” now available on DVD and Blu ray. This past weekend I spent a lot of time with Clint. First I watched him in “The Mule” on DVD to review it for this week’s column. On the following day, I saw him in “El Torino” on TV. , and in each case, Eastwood plays a feisty, somewhat cantankerous old man who has problems connecting with his family. “The Mule” is based on an actual drug runner, Leo Sharp whose story was first told by Sam Dolnick in the New York Times. In the film, Sharp’s name has been changed to Earl Stone. We first meet Earl happily tending the plants in his nursery, but financial trouble looms. Unable to pay his debts he reluctantly puts his home and nursery up for sale. But an opportunity arises at a party for his granddaughter Ginny (Taissa Farmiga) who is about to be married. A young Hispanic guest tells Earl about a contact who might be able to use him as a driver. When Earl applies, he’s hired for a run. He’s given a medium sized cloth bag which is placed in the trunk of his truck. He is told not to open the bag. Upon arrival at the drop off location, he should park and leave the keys in his unlocked vehicle. The next day he will find his payment. True to their word he finds an envelope filled with a substantial amount of cash. The drug cartel hired him because they felt no one would suspect an old white guy of running drugs. They were right, and all goes well and according to plan. After his first delivery Earl has enough money to pay off his debts, buy a new truck and pay for Ginny’s wedding. This gesture doesn’t repair the rupture in his relationship with his only child, Iris ( played by Eastwood’s actual daughter Alison.) It does go slightly better with his ex-wife Mary (Dianne Wiest) who still seems to care about him despite their past. Earl continues working for the drug cartel headed by an amiable Andy Garcia (“Ocean’s Eleven,” “The Godfather Part III”). He’s happy to earn all the extra cash, which he often uses to help others like his granddaughter and the local VFW community center which needs $25,000 to stay open. Earl is pleased with this new found opportunity, and the cartel is equally happy with his ability to go unnoticed. Soon he is asked to carry out more extensive deliveries.

It’s fun to watch Clint carry out his duties. He enjoys the job and the money and cheerfully sings along with his radio as he drives to his drop off destinations. Thanks to an informer DEA agents Colin Bates (Bradley Cooper) and Laurence Fishburne successfully crack down on many drug smugglers. However, the informant is unable to identify the most successful mule, due to a code name given to Earl by the cartel. At one point in the story, an innocent Latino man in a black truck is pulled over by DEA agents who suspect he may be the elusive mule with the code name “Tata.” This is why Earl was hired in the first place. Who would

suspect an 80-year-old white man to be a cartel mule? “The Mule,” from Warner Bros., has a running time of 116 minutes. Rated R for

language throughout and brief sexuality and nudity. The DVD and Blu-ray version of “The Mule” has a featurette entitled “Nobody

Runs Forever: The Making of The Mule.” The Blu-ray Combo Pack also has a feature entitled Toby Keith “Don’t Let the Old Man In” Music Video.

Roots, rock and reggae shine on new releases

Several new eagerlyawaited returns have been released as well as two new recordings pulled from the early 1980s. Artist: Joy Williams Title: Front Porch (Thirty Tigers) You might like if you enjoy: The Civil Wars, Tell me more: Those missing the enticing Americana style pioneered on the Civil Wars’ brief five-year path are in luck. Joy Williams — one half of the popular Grammywinning duo that also featured John Paul White — has returned from her brief detour into a more electronic-meetspop style via 2015’s “Venus” to reward listeners with the luxurious 2019 album “Front Porch.” The beautiful title track is one of the most lovely songs this writer has heard this year; the better news is that the disc’s sonic riches don’t end there. The introspective and nuanced Appalachiapainted soundscapes inspire across a dozen-track run that

showcases Williams’ expressive soprano. The artist delivers probing material with cliche-free depth, as evidenced by mining feelings of loss (“When Does a Heart Move On,” “Be With You”) and romantic celebration (“One and Only,” “No Place Like You”) with equal artistry. Information: JoyWilliams.com. Artist: Nils Lofgren Title: Blue With Lou (Cattle Track Road Records) You might like if you enjoy: Lou Reed, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen Tell me more: Singersongwriter/guitar great Nils Lofgren has returned with his first studio album in eight years, and the 12-song disc reveals it was an ambitious recording project more than worth the wait. Featuring six songs that Lofgren co-wrote with the late Lou Reed, “Blue With Lou” is an album that would have sounded great in any era while definitely resonating in 2019. While a few of the songs that the two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers co-wrote have appeared on

previous Lofgren and Reed releases, “Blue With Lou” features a handful of songs previously-unheard. The musthear collaborations include the wry rocker “Attitude City,” funktinged “Give” (featuring loads impressive and expressive Lofgren guitar work) and the poignant “Talk Thru the Tears.” In addition, Lofgren has crafted two beautiful tributes on the LP; “Dear Heartbreaker” casts its magic on the memory of the late Tom Petty while the album’s affecting closer “Remember You” is a poignant look at his family’s dog Groucho. But at its heart, “Blue With Lou” a showcase for Lofgren’s immense talents as singer, lead guitarist and songwriter. Information: NilsLofgren.com. Artist: Lone Justice Title: Live at the Palomino, 1983 (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Emmylou Harris, Lindi Ortega, the Blasters Tell me more: The most celebrated artist on Los Angeles’ early ‘80s cowpunk

scene, Lone Justice blended old school country and honkytonk with punk, rockabilly and roots rock with authenticity and firepower during the group’s short run. Omnivore Recordings has just released a previously-unavailable “Live at the Palomino, 1983” featuring 12 great songs captured on October 22, 1983. The fastmoving track list includes nuggets from their not-yetreleased 1985 debut album (“Working Late,” “You Are the Light”) and a great take on Merle Haggard’s “Working Man’s Blues,” and an amped up version of the Johnny Cash/ June Carter duet “Jackson.” The live LP is a winning reminder of the talents of the talents of Maria McKee (lead vocals, guitar), Ryan Hedgecock (lead guitar, vocals), Marvin Etzioni (bass) and Don Willens (drums). Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com. Artist: Culture Title: The Nighthawk Recordings (Omnivore Recordings)

You might like if you enjoy: Bob Marley, reggae music Tell me more: Lovers of ‘70s-’80s roots reggae will love the terrific “Culture: The Nighthawk Recordings.” Lead singer Joseph Hill, who passed away in 2006, was among the genre’s best singers and this collection captures the Jamaican artist at the top of his powers. The first three songs on the collection were recorded in 1981 and feature Culture (Hill, Albert Walker, Lloyd Dayes) backed by the Roots Radics; the timeless “This Time” is a highlight of those sessions. The other four tracks on the disc find Culture backed by the Wailers; several of these tracks were put away in vaults and this 2019 title marks their commercial debut. The driving “Can They Run” is particularly forceful and is bolstered by an interesting mix of vocals on the track. The other previouslyunheard song, the infectious “Mr. Music,” is a feel-good melodic groove. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

5 Unique Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

By Desert Star Staff Flowers are always a perfect selection on Mother’s Day, but for gifts that will genuinely make Mom’s day, consider the following ideas: 1. Self-care. Whether you bring the professionals to your home or plan a spa day, Mom deserves to be taken

care of and treated well. A gift certificate is a great way to let her pick the services she wants á la carte, though many spas offer exclusive package deals providing higher value. Either send Mom alone for some deserved me-time or make a day of it and join her so you can enjoy

some quality time together. 2. Music. For musical moms with limited space, or moms looking to learn piano or hone their skills, consider gifting a keyboard with a slim profile. Weighing in at less than 25 pounds, the Casio’s PX-S1000 boasts the Smart Scaled Hammer Action

Keyboard with simulated ebony and ivory key textures, for a grand piano feel and an unusual sound. And integrated Bluetooth technology lets you connect your device wirelessly. Complement this gift with a package of lessons or music to get her started. 3. Making a meal. Create memories together, and a new family tradition, by cooking one of Mom’s favorite or most notable recipes together. Not only will you be creating a delicious Mother’s Day meal, but she can also pass down the recipe to you while you spend quality time together. 4. Timepiece. Put a spin on the usual jewelry given on Mother’s Day, with an accessory that’s not only fashionable but useful, too. For versatility that will complement simple, classic or retro glam looks, consider the Vintage Collection timepieces from Casio, which are offered in different metallic color combinations, such as gold and black, rose gold,

silver, and even camo, and equipped with an LED-lit display face, a countdown timer, and a 1/10th second stopwatch. They also feature a daily alarm, hourly time signal, and an auto-calendar, making them a necessity for anyone looking for fashion flair that keeps them on time. 5. Movie night. Is Mom a movie buff? Upgrade the cinematic experience by helping her create an affordable at-home theater. It all starts with the right projector. For a unique, highbrightness tool, consider a LampFree projector from Casio’s Advanced Series, such as the XJ-F210WN, which features two HDMI terminals as well as a USB power supply. It also has Intelligent Light Control, which senses ambient light in the room and automatically adjusts the projection brightness accordingly to ensure viewers have spectacular visuals any time of day and in any lighting conditions. PUBLIC NOTICE

PUBLIC NOTICE

Notice to Respondent Rene Sugich. You have been sued. Aviso al Demandado Rene Sugich. Ha sido demandado. Petitioner Frances Sugich filed for divorce at Pomona Courthouse South, 400 Civic Center Plaza, Pomona, CA 91766, case number 19PSFL00440. After service of the Summons and Petition for divorce, you have 30 calendar days to file a Response (FL-120). A letter, phone call, or court appearance will not protect you. If you do not file your Response on time, the court may make orders affecting your marriage and property. For legal advice, contact a lawyer immediately. If you cannot pay the filing fee, ask the clerk for a fee waiver form. NOTICE— STANDARD FAMILY LAW RESTRAINING ORDERS: These restraining orders are effective against both spouses until the petition is dismissed, a judgment is entered, or the court makes further orders. They are enforceable anywhere in California by any law enforcement officer who has received or seen a copy of them. Starting immediately, you and your spouse or domestic partner are restrained from: 1. Cashing, borrowing against, canceling, transferring, disposing of, or changing the beneficiaries of any insurance or other coverage, including life, health, automobile, and disability, held for the benefit of the parties and their minor children; 2. Transferring, encumbering, hypothecating, concealing, or in any way disposing of any property, real or personal, whether community, quasi-community, or separate, without the written consent of the other party or an order of the court, except in the usual course of business or for the necessities of life; and 3. Creating a nonprobate transfer or modifying a nonprobate transfer in a manner that affects the disposition of property subject to the transfer, without the written consent of the other party or an order of the court. Before revocation of a nonprobate transfer can take effect or a right of survivorship to property can be eliminated, notice of the change must be filed and served on the other party. You must notify each other of any proposed extraordinary expenditures at least five business days prior to incurring these extraordinary expenditures and account to the court for all extraordinary expenditures made after these restraining orders are effective. However, you may use community property, quasi-community property, or your own separate property to pay an attorney to help you or to pay court costs. WARNING—IMPORTANT INFORMATION California law provides that, for purposes of division of property upon dissolution of a marriage, property acquired by the parties during marriage in joint form is presumed to be community property. If either party to this action should die before the jointly held community property is divided, the language in the deed that characterizes how title is held (i.e., joint tenancy, tenants in common, or community property) will be controlling, and not the community property presumption. You should consult your attorney if you want the community property presumption to be written into the recorded title to the property. Publish April 30, May 3, 10, 17, 2019. Enhanced surveillance and public outreach will continue in an ongoing effort to bring down mosquito populations. District teams are searching for and treating standing water sources. Community members are urged to also do inspections for standing water on their own properties and remove any standing water they find. No mosquito-transmitted viruses have been detected in the Coachella Valley this year, however, the higher the mosquito population, the higher the risk of West Nile

and St. Louis encephalitis virus transmission. These viruses are transmitted to people via the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite birds with the virus. Most people will have no symptoms; others develop fever, headaches, and body aches. Hospitalization is required in some cases and in rare cases the disease is fatal. Young children, the elderly, or individuals with lowered immune systems are at greater risk of experiencing severe symptoms when infected. Anyone with symptoms should contact their health provider. The best way to prevent getting infected is to prevent mosquito bites. Prevent mosquitoes

Powerful Drama ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ at Palm Canyon Theatre

“The Diary of Anne Frank” Photo Paul Hayashi By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Timing is everything as the saying goes in show business. It can’t be taught. Either performers have it, or they don’t. The same could be said for subject matter written for the theatre and for the cinema. It’s a question of when is the original story “ready” for an audience? And when should those plays and movies be revisited again? In the case of movies, we have TCM to comfort or alert us. In the world of the stage, we rely on revivals. The world is once again drifting into dangerous and perilous waters with the rise of intolerance, hate, violence, and a disregard for accepted societal rules and laws. Alas, we humans have short memories when it comes to not learning from our past mistakes. This is why the play “The Diary of Anne Frank,” at the Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) in Palm Springs, is a must-see production no matter wherever and/or whenever it is staged. It’s a poignantly dramatized play written 76 years ago by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett that unfortunately is very relevant today. It appears that a storm warning from our past is approaching in the 21st century in the form of civil unrest and increased protests involving extreme right-wing leaning nationalistic agendas and movements both in America and abroad. “Whether the rock hits the jug or the jug hits the rock… it’s usually not very good for the jug”, according to Sancho Panza, the character in the musical “Man of La Mancha. And he is absolutely correct in his 20th century whimsical, pithy, epigram. Wonderfully staged by theatre Founder and director Dr. William Layne, “The Diary of Anne Frank,” is a play with a message that is timeless and should be both heeded and celebrated at the same time. The true and factual story of 14-year-old German/Jewish teenager Anne Frank and her www.desertstarweekly.com

diary - which she kept during WW II - while in hiding with her family in Holland from the Nazi government’s obsession to murder all of European Jewry. Her story became the basis for the powerful and heartfelt play and the movie that followed based on her famous diary. She died in a Nazi concentration camp 18 months before WW II ended. But her personal holocaust story lives on to inspire us to listen to our better angels. It’s become a symbol of tolerance, strength, and hope in the face of adversity. Playing the lead role of Anne is a daunting task for any actor. The part is usually tackled by teenage actors or older, who range from 16 to 20 years of age due to its emotional demands. Experienced actor Susan Strasberg, was 17 when she performed as Anne in the Broadway debut in 1955 garnering a coveted Tony Award nomination in the process. I can’t recall any other actor playing Anne younger than 17… until now. In the PCT production, the role of Anne is performed by 12-year-old Ava Tethel. The young actor delivers an astonishing nuanced performance for one so young. She is in the moment in all her scenes with actors up to five times her age, and she holds her own. It helps, however, when one comes from a theatrical family. She is the granddaughter of director William Layne and the daughter of actor, choreographer, and theatre co-artistic director Se Layne and daughter of actor/director Rodney Tethel. It’s also fortunate to be surrounded by an outstanding supporting cast. Emmy-winning Professional Sports announcer for the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars Hockey team, Ralph Strangis, stars as Otto Frank in the powerful performance as the head of the Frank family. Who knew a professional hockey broadcaster could bring such empathy and tenderness to the stage? The solid cast of ten actors perform both as an effective and as an affecting drama ensemble whose dark and somber performances at times,

“The Diary of Anne Frank” Photo Paul Hayashi are leavened with light comedy moments. Even in the worse situations in life, humorous dialogue occurs. If the subject matter of the Holocaust wasn’t so dire, the characters in this production would be right at home in playing a family in any American TV sit-com. In the “Diary of Anne Frank,” the story retells in a flashback, what took place when the Frank family of Otto, his wife Edith (Chandra Smith), his two daughters Margot (Ashley Davies), and young Anne are forced to flee Hitler’s Germany to Holland. When Holland becomes occupied, all Jewish refugees are rounded up; destined for the concentration camps. Others like the Frank’s went into hiding protected by gentiles who if they were discovered harboring Jews also could be arrested themselves.

May 1, 2019

The gentile home-owner Mr. Kraler, who hides and protects Jewish families is nicely played by Frank Catale. Miep Gies (Suzie Thomas Wourms) another protector and friend of Kraler, renders a little gem of a performance in her scenes, Morgana Correlli as Mrs. Van Daan, and Larry Dykeman as Mr. Van Daan shine in their scenes as ‘outsiders’ who create problems for the eight Jewish residents living in a space built to accommodate four people. The Van Daan’s teenage son Peter, nicely played by Aiden Bosworth, has several tenderly performed scenes with Anne. One can only ache for the youngsters trying to live and grow up in such circumstances. The comedy relief character of the frustrated and fearful dentist Mr. Dussel, if one can use the term in the context

of the drama, is amusingly performed by Herb Schultz. The creative team led by director Layne includes Scenic and Lighting Designer J.W. Layne, who provides a perfect functional set and lighting design that allows the actors as well as the audience to appreciate the story unfolding on stage, along with the appropriate WW II costume designs created by resident Designer Derik Shopinski, Wig designs created by Mado Nunez, complete the team. “The Diary of Anne Frank” is a powerful and important production that underscores the play’s core story points of being “different” - which inevitably lead to discrimination and racism - will ever become a reality here in the United States. And the beat goes on ….
