‘Hollywood Vampires’

Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Fantasy Springs Resort Casino had another big hit in their Special Events Center on Saturday night, May 18th. They brought “Hollywood Vampires” to the stage. What a gigantic show and production. Hollywood

Vampires consisted of the iconic rapper, Alice Cooper, guitarist Joe Perry, and Actor Johnny Depp. The whole place erupted in screams when they took to the stage. Fans stood for a lot of the performance so they could raise their arms, dance by

their chairs, sing and sway to the music and take photos. The cheers and clapping were nonstop after each song. The seats were filled with fans of all three performers. Some fans even took extra time to come dressed like Alice, wore Alice T-shirts and hats,

Lady Beverly Cohn Ron Howard certainly falls into the category of a national treasure beginning with his role as America’s favorite kid, Opie, on “The Andy Griffith Show.” Since that time, that little kid from Duncan, Oklahoma, costarred in a variety of episodic television shows as well as directing Emmy-award winning programs. He made his feature film directing debut with “Grand Auto Theft” subsequently working with some of the most famous Hollywood actors, including Robert De Niro, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Kurt Russell, Mel Gibson, Gary Sinise, Tom Hanks, Kevin

Bacon, Ed Harris, and Bill Paxton. He has directed some of the film industry’s most memorable films including, “Cocoon,” “A Beautiful Mind,” “Splash,” “Parenthood,” “Cinderella Man,” “Frost/Nixon,” and “Apollo 13,” which garnered the Best Director Oscar. Your reporter sat down with this brilliant director for an exclusive interview to discuss his latest film, “Pavarotti,” a documentary on the life, times, and struggles of one of the world’s most famous tenors. A CBS Films Polygram Entertainment Brian Grazer presentation, the film is an Imagine Entertainment

and White Horse Pictures production and is scheduled to open in select cities on June 7. The following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.

You’ve made two successful documentaries: “Made in America” and “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years.” Why a documentary on Pavarotti? In addition to quick and easy preparation, asparagus also allows for loads of wholesome health benefits with its low-calorie qualities and sources of fiber, folate and vitamins. To get the most nutritional value out of your asparagus, consider buying the veggie when it’s in-season from your local area instead of purchasing imported asparagus. You Just Graduated from High School. What do you do next?

By Janice Gough Today’s senior students find themselves in one of the most competitive jobs and graduate school markets in a generation. In past years, we have determined that to get ahead, one needed to get a college degree, and many employers will not interview or consider those who have not completed that level of learning. However, it is essential to determine, as a parent, if your student is ready to commit to their dreams. It is a costly investment if your student learns that college is their time to party. Some students do not thrive

well in structured situations. Most students have already established whether they are ready to work hard to achieve their goals. However, some students need time to develop and go their direction before going to college. Having ethical counselors, advisors, and mentors are required to provide a plan of leadership. The most important thing a parent can do is to find a counselor who will advise your student of the best way to proceed. Such a relationship provides students with real-world advice, the best way to pursue their dreams and someone who can serve as a cheerleader along the Road. Some students can learn far more by reading independently, quite frankly. The idea of everybody going to college should be a non-starter. Instead, it’s being sold as some human right. Some of the most genius and wealthy people today have mastered their craft on their own. However, those seeking degrees in the Science and Medical fields or who do Laboratory work, need college to succeed. Soon-to-be graduates must confront, and sometimes overcome, traits and tendencies that could impede their efforts to land a job or secure a seat in graduate school. While confidence is high, they should also be prepared to deal with disappointments, failure, and setbacks, so this does not hold them back from the desire to reach their goals. Many of today’s graduates have strong fundamental skills (analysis, writing, oral communication); however, it is a challenge for all of us to

deal with rejection effectively. Employers and graduate schools expect a lot from graduates, and they are in a position to pick the best and the brightest from a large pool of applicants. They are looking for respectful and responsible team members who are curious and have a willingness to learn. It should go without saying that a positive attitude goes a long way when searching for a position. Honesty and dependability are critical characteristics for successful candidates, as are critical and creative thinking. Communication skills (interpersonal, writing) and the ability to listen can make the difference in securing an interview or getting a final offer. As important as it is to be goal oriented, it is also crucial that candidates demonstrate positive energy and have a sense of humor. That’s a tall order, but students who have used their college time wisely will have practiced these skills in various venues and be able to move on confidently. Students who are “ready

“to launch” can use advice and guidance at several points during their education and training. Today, Students and graduates are quick and creative thinkers, innovative, highly adaptable, technologically savvy, confident, not bound by norms, accomplished at teamwork, willing to take risks, and multi-talented. These skills and attributes should be highlighted on resumes and used during interviews. When I graduated, there was very little advice given to help seniors. I wish that there were more tools available and counselors, however, unless you were Rich, then you were left to “wing it” the best you could. I had employment before leaving high school, so I went to college part-time and worked part-time to pay for my studies, similar to internships. College advisors should begin talking about internships, relevant summer jobs, and work/study experiences on the first day of college. This will help your student to understand the value of a good work ethic and respect that they are a partner

in paying for their livelihoods. Conversations about post-graduation plans should be addressed at least a year or more before graduating, as there are many options to consider. Proper planning produces the best results. Success in college is defined as a predictor for success in the workforce or grad school. It, however, is not a guarantee that all aspirations will be fulfilled; students should not expect that good grades will equate to graduate admission or a high paying job. All of college and what decisions you make after graduating High School is preparation for what is ahead. Best of Luck to “Class of 2019” Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in Palm Springs. Supporters Promote Controversial Anti-Vaping Bill By Desert Star Staff HAMTRAMCK, Mich. — Supporters are speaking out this week in favor of a pair of controversial anti-vaping bills - with opponents saying they don’t go far enough. Senate Bills 106 and 155 would ban the sale of e-cigarettes and vaping products to minors and impose fines of up to $2,500 on retailers who violate the law. Rep. Isaac Robinson, D-Detroit, is behind the ban, and noted the law applies to more than just liquid nicotine. “All types of substances including marijuana, any dangerous chemicals that can be put in these devices, they are going to be taken out of the hands of kids,” Robinson said. The bills already have passed the state Senate and were voted out of the House Judiciary Committee. Next, they need a vote in the full state House of Representatives. In the past, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration has questioned the bills, preferring

The bills also would fine minors who attempt to buy vaping products up to $50 for the first offense, and require them to attend a health program on the dangers of vaping or do community service.

Trump slams NYT after report claiming ‘suspicious activity’

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump lashed out at the “failing New York Times” in a Monday morning tweet storm after the newspaper reported that Deutsche Bank employees had noticed “suspicious activity” on his accounts. Trump accused the paper and other “Fake News Media” of “writing phony stories” claiming banks did not want to do business with him. “WRONG! It is because I didn’t need money,” Trump tweeted. He also made reference to media theories that he had made financial deals with Russia in the past. “Now the new big story is that Trump made a lot of money and buys everything for cash, he doesn’t need banks. But where did he get all of that cash? Could

it be Russia? No, I built a great business and don’t need banks,” he wrote. Trump said the mainstream media has never been “as corrupt and deranged” as it is today and dismissed the idea that he was unhappy with the service provided by Deutsche Bank, which he said was “very good and highly professional” to deal with. The Times report claimed that the German bank’s antimoney laundering employees noticed multiple suspicious transactions involving legal entities controlled by Trump and his son-inlaw Jared Kushner — and recommended that they be reported to a federal financial crimes watchdog. The reports were never filed with the US Treasury Department, however. The

Times explained that certain transactions, particularly involving real-estate, can sometimes automatically trigger review procedures without any wrongdoing. The red flags raised by employees “do not necessarily mean the transactions were improper,” the report said, adding that banks sometimes opt not to filed suspicious activity reports “if they conclude their employees’ concerns are unwarranted.” Kerrie McHugh, a Deutsche Bank spokeswoman, told the paper that investigators were never prevented from looking further into suspicious activity and said suggestions that employees were fired “in an effort to quash concerns” relating to any client are “categorically false.”

Disability-Rights Advocates Sue MTA for Accessibility

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK — A federal class-action lawsuit claims

New York City’s subway system has broken the law by failing to make stations

wheelchair accessible. The lawsuit was filed by the group Disability Rights Advocates on behalf of individual plaintiffs and a coalition of disability organizations. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires transit systems to make older facilities accessible when major renovations are done. But according to Emily Seelenfreund, an attorney with DRA, almost 30 years after the ADA became law, three-quarters of the 472 New York City subway stations still are inaccessible to wheelchair users, the elderly, parents with strollers and travelers with luggage. “The MTA has blatantly ignored that mandate and it just continues to shut down station after station to make the station better for people without disabilities but totally ignoring the needs of the riders with

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Immigrants’ rights groups are speaking out against President Donald Trump’s new immigration proposal – unveiled yesterday – saying it betrays American values and ignores the thorniest issues that have thus far held up a comprehensive immigration deal in Congress. If the new proposal becomes law, migrants would have to take a civics test and demonstrate proficiency in English. They’d be judged on a point system that favors those who are younger, better-educated or highlyskilled, or who have a job offer waiting for them.

Karina Martinez, communications director with the group Mi Familia Vota Los Angeles, says that doesn’t sound much like a country founded to be welcoming to people of all economic backgrounds. “While it’s OK to have skillsbased immigration programs, our immigration should not be limited to only a select few and elites,” says Martinez. “Especially when you add a language test, it just goes against our national values.” The president defends his policy, saying it will protect jobs by keeping more low-wage workers out. According to the American Immigration Council, more

than 25% of California residents are foreign-born, and 20% are native-born with at least one immigrant parent. The state also is home to 2.4 million undocumented immigrants, who are a big part of the labor force and contribute to the economy through spending and taxes. Martinez notes that the proposal makes no mention of a path to citizenship for the 200,000 DACA recipients living in California. “They want to be able to use what they’ve learned and harness the skills that they have,” says Martinez. “So, it’s a real tragedy when President Trump is doing more to hurt people than to help people.”

disabilities,” Seelenfreund said. Earlier this year, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said it would allocate almost $3 billion for accessibility improvements in the five-year capital plan starting in 2020, up from just $248 million in the 2010 plan. Susan Dooha is executive director of the Center for Independence of the Disabled New York, a plaintiff in the case. She pointed out that in the past, the MTA issued a report saying it would make many more stations accessible, but promises are not enough. “The plan is only as good as their ongoing will to carry it out,” Dooha said. “And we think at this point we need a binding agreement.” She noted the MTA is still working to fulfill its obligations under a 1994 court settlement called the “key stations agreement.”

In March of this year, a federal court ruled that the renovation of a subway station in the Bronx triggered a requirement under the ADA to install elevators, which was not done. Seelenfreund said the new lawsuit seeks to build on that ruling. “Our lawsuit is taking that lawsuit and asking the federal courts to apply it broadly to all the stations in which the MTA has ignored their customers with disabilities just like at the Middleton Road station,” Seelenfreund said. The lawsuit seeks an order requiring the MTA to install elevators or other means of stair-free access in all renovated stations. Disclosure: Center for Independence of the Disabled New York contributes to our fund for reporting on Disabilities.

Critics of the proposal also point out that it doesn’t address the fate of the 450,000 holders of Temporary Protected

Status, or the 11 million undocumented people currently living in the United States.

Capitol Could Go Dark for Boise Pride Festival

The Boise Pride Festival is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. (Kenneth Freeman/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho – Boise is set to host one of its biggest pride festivals ever, but the Idaho State Capitol might not be part of the festivities. After three years of lighting the building with rainbow lights to support the LGBTQ community, Idaho officials say the Capitol building is no

By Desert Star Staff HAZARD, Ky. — Last week, Kentucky Public Health officials, community leaders and former smokers spoke to residents of Hazard as part of the Centers for Disease Control’s “Tips From Former Smokers” campaign. Amanda is a former smoker who has been traveling the country telling her story about how smoking affected the birth of her baby daughter. Amanda started smoking in fifth grade, and by age 13, she smoked every day. She now works as a tobacco-cessation counselor to help pregnant women and new moms quit smoking. “It seemed like everyone smoked,” Amanda said. “A lot of my family members smoked, a lot of people in the community smoked. A lot of older kids were smoking, my peers were smoking. And

as an adolescent, you want to grow up, you want to feel like an adult. And most of the adults I knew smoked.” According to the state’s Cabinet for Health and Family Services, each year more than 8,000 Kentuckians die of tobacco-related illnesses, such as lung disease. The state’s Medicaid and Medicare costs to treat smoking-related disease top $1.2 billion. Because she smoked during pregnancy, Amanda’s baby was born two months premature. She said she’s passionate about urging women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant to at least try to reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke during their pregnancy or quit for the 9-month period. “My daughter was born two months early because of my smoking,” she said. “She continues to have some health

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Washington state lawmakers passed bills this session to make the guardianship application process easier for parents. Sterling Harders, president of SEIU 775, says her union represents thousands of parents who take care of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She says she’s heard from members that when their children turned 18 the path to guardianship was

complex and expensive, often requiring a lawyer to understand the process. It also differs from county to county. Harders says two pieces of legislation are addressing these issues, easing some of the burden for parents. “Life is difficult enough for these folks having to take care of special needs kids,” she states. “They don’t need one more thing to worry about, and so we are really hopeful that these two bills will make life just a little

10,000 signatures last week calling on Capitol officials to reverse their decision. The Department of Administration points to a message former agency director Robert Geddes sent to festival organizers last year, saying the agency was receiving a high volume of applications and could no longer accept requests. According to the Idaho Statesman, the agency receives about 10 to 12 requests a year. Dale says it’s going to be a big year for Boise Pride, with organizers expecting 70,000 attendees from across the West. Last year’s event drew 50,000 people. It’s the 30th anniversary in Boise and also the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York City, which are often recognized as the beginning of the LGBTQ movement. easier for parent providers.” The Uniform Guardianship Act, Senate Bill 5604, will standardize the guardianship process across the state’s 39 counties and create a monitoring system and model training program. The bill currently is on Gov. Jay Inslee’s desk. The other measure, House Bill 1329, creates alternatives to full legal guardianship. The bill was signed in April and goes into effect at the end of July. Shannon Beigert, the

mother of two children with very different needs, is the legal guardian for her daughter, who has an intellectual disability. Her son has autism, which manifests in challenging and oppositional behavior to her and her husband and has led to third-party guardianship of him. Beigert says one-size-fitsall laws around guardianship don’t work well for people as different as her two children. “In today’s world, you’re either an incapacitated person or you’re a person that is

not incapacitated with full legal rights, and creating an opportunity for there to be some different options within that continuum, I think, is very important,” she states. also says if one application for Capitol lighting were approved, the agency would have to approve them all. Dale takes exception to this, saying it’s the agency’s job to make decisions like this. “We think, as elected officials and as the state, they need to make a determination who should do it and who can’t do it,” he stresses. “You know, that’s why we trust them to make those decisions. It hasn’t been an issue for areas across the country. For some reason, it’s an issue here in Idaho.” Dale says this year also is important because the community continues to advocate for adding the terms “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to the Idaho Human Rights Act, which would provide housing and employment protections. Organizers might do a lighting across the street from the Capitol, but Dale says it will cost an additional $5,000 to do this, on top of they would have spent to light the Capitol.

Puget Sound, Orca Advocates in D.C. to Urge Fed’l. Funding

Salmon recovery in Puget Sound is critical for the survival of Southern Resident orcas. (Puget Sound Partnership) By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE - Supporters of Puget Sound, salmon and orcas are in the nation’s capital to advocate for federal investments in the Evergreen State. Environmental groups, tribal members and business leaders are to meet today with the state’s congressional delegation for the fifth year in a row to

thank them for their support of Puget Sound recovery and urge them to continue it. But the support doesn’t come easy. Robb Krehbiel, Northwest representative for Defenders of Wildlife, traveled to the capital and said the Sound’s recovery isn’t a high priority for the Trump administration. “Ever since President Trump took office, every budget

By Desert Star Staff BAR HARBOR, Maine – While the U.S. lobster industry is booming in Maine, some of its fishing methods are hurting a special group – the North Atlantic right whales. The whales number slightly more than 400 and are facing extinction. Recently, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration convened a group of experts, called the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Team. It made recommendations to the federal government about how to protect the right whales and, in particular, how the New England lobster industry can modify practices to save the whales. Zack Klyver with Bar Harbor Whale Watch and Blue Planet Strategies has reviewed data of about 100 whale sightings in Maine. He says the majority of the sightings were about 20 miles off the coast. “That’s where the greatest co-occurrence of risk is for whales and fishing gear, and that, I think, is where there really is need for conservation,” Klyver states. Meanwhile, the offshore lobster industry, which travels further into the water, has grown. According to a number of experts, this has been a deadly mix for the right whales. Peter Baker, who directs The Pew Charitable Trust’s marine conservation work in New England and the Atlantic region of Canada, describes the offshore lobster industry’s rise. “What we’ve seen over the last 15 years or so is this

massive buildup of an offshore lobster fleet,” he points out. “And these guys go farther out in the federal waters. They go out into where the right whale migrates, and they put in much bigger traps. They’re much heavier. They’re much deeper.” Baker maintains conservation efforts need to focus more on industrialsize offshore fleets and their impact on whales. Regina Asmutis-Silvia, executive director of the North American office of Whale and Dolphin Conservation, was part of the Take-Reduction Team. She says she was impressed by Maine’s commitment to protect the whales. “Maine, for instance, has said that they will reduce vertical line by 50%,” she points out. “Those vertical lines, those buoy lines that go up to the surface, that appears to be the biggest risk to right whale entanglements. And that’s a very big deal.” Asmutis-Silvia hopes there will be a proposed rule by the end of the year and that within the next few years, this rule will significantly reduce the amount of vertical fishing line in the water. But the recommendations must go through an approval process that could be divisive, particularly from some lobster groups. proposal he has rolled out has zeroed out key sources of funding to recover salmon and Puget Sound,” Krehbiel said. “And every year, we have to go back to D.C. to advocate for these funds to be restored.” This year, he said, they’re combining Puget Sound Day on the Hill with Salmon Days, to push for recovery of the Northwest’s ailing native

salmon populations. Along with a healthier environment, they’ll also be talking about the economic boost that Puget Sound gives to the state. Laura Blackmore, executive director of the Puget Sound Partnership, which coordinated the trip, said the National Estuary Program and Puget Sound Geographic Program are vital for Sound recovery. Blackmore added that there’s another critical program to help Northwest salmon, as well as the struggling Southern Resident orcas that rely on them. “The funding that we get that comes to the five western states through the Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund goes directly towards projects here, on the ground, in Puget Sound that help to restore habitat to support the recovery of Chinook salmon, so that orcas will have food to eat.” she said. Orcas are a big part of Puget Sound recovery, although Krehbiel noted that there isn’t

a dedicated source of federal funding to help the species. This year, Washington state lawmakers passed a suite of bills to protect orcas from oil spills, vessel noise and whale-watching in the Sound and restore shoreline habitat for salmon. Krehbiel said he wants the federal government to follow the state’s lead. “Everybody is pulling together to increase their investments and the state took a really, really big step in the right direction this legislative session,” he said. “So, that’s one of the messages we’ll be conveying to our folks in D.C.” The Southern Resident orca population is at a 30-year-low of 75. Can I/They Keep Their Exclusive Use Area Change? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Mr. Richardson, Many years ago, I was allowed by the board to raise the height of my deck. I paid for the architectural change. No board member or manager since has ever inquired about it. Most people don’t even see the change. Do I have legal standing to keep my patio the way it is or at some time could I be forced to put it back the way it was originally built? J.H., Huntington Beach Dear J.H., When you modify an exclusive use common area, it is still not owned by you. Common areas are normally defined by a recorded plan or map. I am assuming from your question that you have

no documentation proving the modification was approved. If you cannot prove the alteration was with HOA permission, the HOA might deny that the alteration was approved. If the association decided for some reason to renege on the permission, it might have to pay for the revision and possibly reimburse you for the original modification expense. Your situation illustrates why it is a good idea for both HOA and homeowner to document approved changes to an exclusive use common area, in a written agreement signed by the homeowner and the HOA. With a written agreement in hand, you would be able to prove you had permission. Such agreements are also helpful to the HOA because they can document the homeowner’s agreement to be responsible for the changed item’s maintenance and repair.

To make sure that future owners of the lot or unit are notified of this agreement, the agreement can be filed with the County Registrar/Recorder. Perhaps it is not too late to have such an agreement signed now, to avoid future disagreements. Hoping this helps, Kelly

Baurle says it is common for men to shy away from talking about their feelings directly or informal settings, so using a shoulder-toshoulder approach can help bring issues out in the open. She says it is an excellent idea to let men in your lives know – as you are driving or out on a walk – that when they are ready, you are open to talking and are there for support. “So it might not be in that moment that you first broach the topic, it might be at some other point,” she states. “And when he does come to you, it is important to focus and listen because men can more easily feel brushed off or ignored if other things are going on.” Baurle says catching

Tips for Helping Men Seek, Get Mental Health Care By Desert Star Staff DENVER – STRIDE Community Health Center has joined the Let’s Talk Colorado campaign, a coalition of more than 20 health organizations, and this year’s emphasis is to address some of the unique challenges men face with mental health. STRIDE psychologist Erin Baurle says men do not seek care at the rate women do, even though numbers show they suffer from depression, anxiety, and other obstacles to their well-being the same as everyone else. She says stigma continues to be one of the most significant barriers for people seeking treatment. “The lack of treatment for mental health exceeds any other health condition www.desertstarweekly.com

that we have, and people are again real reticent to seek care and not getting the care that they need to address issues and concerns that are very real,” she states. Baurle notes at STRIDE, mental health is seen as integral to overall health and well-being, and licensed mental health professionals stand side by side with medical providers during a patient’s medical visit. Six million men across the U.S. admit to experiencing depression, and men are almost four times as likely to die from suicide as women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Conservationists Oppose Moving BLM HQ to Western State By Desert Star Staff SALT LAKE CITY — Federal officials say they plan to reveal later this year whether they will relocate the Bureau of Land Management headquarters to a Western state. The stated goal is to better manage federally owned public lands, which are mostly in the West. But conservation have questioned the Trump administration’s motives. States such as Utah, Arizona, Idaho, New Mexico and Colorado have been most prominently mentioned for the relocation. Ashley Soltysiak with the Sierra Club of Utah said they see no real reason for the move. “I think that the current system is working - sort of that ‘if it’s not broke don’t fix it’ mentality,” Soltysiak said. “But there are field offices throughout the West, and they communicate regularly with headquarters. And so, I don’t see a huge benefit to moving

the headquarters west.” Soltysiak said the states being considered have large contingents of legislators and other interests who want the states to control federal lands. Conservation groups such as the Sierra Club and others have fought for years to keep public lands under federal control. They are concerned that those lands could be opened up for mineral leases or other development or might be sold outright to private interests. Currently, the federal government owns more than one-third of all the land in the five states, and controls more than 60% of both Idaho and Utah. Shifting control of public lands to sates has long been a goal of many westernstate conservatives, who say the federal government controls too much of their land. Soltysiak said moving a large agency such as the BLM out of Washington

Cedar Mesa in Southern Utah is part of thousands of square miles of public lands in the Western United States. Federal officials are considering moving the BLM’s headquarters from Washington, D.C. to a western state to better manage public lands. (HannahCowan/BLM) could be an enormous and unnecessary expense. “There’s been no dollar sign that’s been placed on this reorganization,” she said. “And these types of changes don’t come without a pretty major cost, which could be massive for an agency that May 22, 2019

has already been underfunded and has limited resources.” Over the last two years, the Trump administration has acted aggressively to remove parts of national monuments and limit future designations. In Utah, a presidential order removed millions of acres

of land from both the Bears Ears and Grand StaircaseEscalante monuments. Department of the Interior officials say September is their deadline to announce details of any decision to relocate the BLM. www.desertstarweekly.com

Doheny Blues Festival Recap Lovers of blues, soul, blues-rock and roots music all found something to celebrate at the Doheny Blues Festival held in Dana Point, May 18-19. The annual blues bash lived up its legacy over two wonderful days, with fans rewarded with memorable performances. Here is a recap of this writer’s favorite performances at Sea Terrace Park over the weekend. May 18 Singer-harmonica player Tom Ball and guitar master Kenny Sultan performed a breakfast set for fans lined up to get into the festival, offering up authentic acoustic stylings with warmth and early-hour firepower. GA-20 is a rising talent forged in Boston, Massachusetts last year. Recalling the fiery approach

title track off their latest album “Two Trains.” Another solid original was the tuneful “Live For Today,” bolstered by great vocal harmonies and impressive fretwork courtesy of Joey Delgado. To say singer-songwriterguitar great Sue Foley brought down the house was to state the obvious. Performing a 45-minute set of material weighted in favor of her latest album, the terrific “The Ice Queen,” the Canadian star is a masterful artist who was able to further inspire via a strong performance on the Backporch Stage. The smooth “Gaslight,” joyful “The Lucky Ones” and a short mini-set of flamenco blues showcasing Foley’s guitar work made for one of the weekend’s standout sets. Foley closed out her set with the hard-charging “Run” that

Photo by Bob Steshetz of new generation blues heroes Moreland & Arbuckle and The Record Company, singer-guitarist Pat Faherty and guitarist Matthews Stubbs fired up the crowd with a number of hard-hitting tracks. “One Night Man,” “By My Lonesome” and a cover of Clifton Chenier’s “My Soul” were among the memorable cuts that lit up the Backporch Stage. Opening up the action on the Dana Point Stage was East Los Angeles’ the Delgado Brothers, a quintet that shined with a mix of wellcrafted blues and roots rock tracks. Drummer-lead singer Steve Delgado, bassist Bob Delgado, lead guitarist Joey “D” Delgado and keyboardist David B. had everyone moving to the wild and infectious rhythm. The North Mississippi Allstars brought their signature brand of Southern rock, blues rock and jam band tradition to the Backporch, with singerguitarist Luther Dickinson and drummer-guitarist Cody Dickinson impressing with their virtuoso chops and authentic approach. Highlights of the hour-long outing including an extended electric washboard solo from Cody, and 16-yearold guitar prodigy Brandon “Taz” Niederauer and lead guitarist Duane Betts (the son of Allman Brothers Band legend Dickey Betts) joining the band later in the set. Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals used their 90-minute set to deliver a searing lesson in why blues and roots music

still matter. Performing on the Dana Point Stage, Harper and his outfit performed both fullband blues blasters and sparse acoustic tracks. All featured Harper’s distinctive vocals and lyrical stories that resonate with real life power and explore issues related to social justice. The potent “Burn One Down,” the trance blues of “Whipping Boy” and stirring “There Will be a Light” were among the wonderful selections that showered the night with magic.

May 19 Southern Avenue may not be Memphis’ best-kept secret much longer. The high-energy young group brought a mix of Southern soul, blues, funk and R&B to the Backporch. Kicking things off with “Whiskey Love” off their new sophomore album “Keep On,” the mix of styles, infectious energy and palpable chemistry between the band members and virtuoso chops kept the set racing for the next 45 minutes. Singer Tierinii Jackson and her sister Tikyra Jackson showed off their great harmonies, while top-tier guitarist Ori Naftly were especially locked in as they commanded the front of the stage. Keyboardist Jeremy Powell got to shine on “It’s Gonna Be Alright,” a great track off the group’s self-titled 2017 effort. Southern Avenue closed things out with the uplifting “Don’t Give Up.” At 85, John Mayall remains a passionate and heartfelt champion of the blues – and so-called “British blues” in particular. In addition to his strong baritone vocals, Mayall shared his talents on keyboards, guitar and blues harmonica while also showcasing his talented lead guitarist (and sometimes lead vocalist) Carolyn Wonderland. I especially loved the performance of a loose and buoyant take on the Curtis Salgado song “The Sum Of Something.” The Marcus King Band delivered a jaw-dropping and blistering hour-long set on the Dana Point Stage. Led by super-talented lead guitarist/ singer-songwriter Marcus King, the Greenville, South Carolina band draws comparisons with modern-day artists such as Southern Avenue and Vintage Trouble in terms of mixing up its influences and creating something that is the group’s own. King was flat-out amazing on stage, with his dramatic and impressive fretwork conjuring up sonic fireworks aplenty. What wasn’t to love, including the explosive “Where I’m Headed,” more introspective “Mourning Light” and Southern rock power ballad “Goodbye Carolina.” What’s more, the collective were even joined by Niederauer May 22, 2019

Canadian singer-songwriter-guitarist Sue Foley performing on the Backporch Stage. Photo by Bob Steshetz to cap this incredible set. Vintage Trouble has proven to be one of modern music’s alltime great concert acts, so it’s little surprise the Los Angelesbased quartet killed it on the Backporch Stage on Sunday. While the weekend may have been winding down, Vintage Trouble had little interest in helping blues fans relax. Rather the group kept the party rolling with an intoxicating mix of rock ‘n’ soul. The soulful “Nobody Told Me,” rocking “Blues Hand Me Down” and tender “My Whole World Stopped Without You” were early favorites. The band continued to mix things up and keep things inspired and interesting, complete with an acapella vocal opening to open the timely “Everyone Is Everyone,” slide guitar-anchored “Run Like The River” and an

inventive cover of Elton John’s “Rocketman.” Lead singer Ty Taylor ventured out into the enthusiastic crowd several times, including when he was carried above the audience. The over-so-fast set ended with a mighty “Knock Me Out.” Omega Events added a special Music Preserves Stage at this year’s event where artists were interviewed and concertgoers were treated to insider experiences from musicians. I caught Niederauer who talked about his passion for the blues and his excitement at performing with many of the artists at this year’s Doheny Blues Fest. The aforementioned Foley, harmonica legend Rod Piazza and Southern Avenue were among other artists who spoke on the stage.

Ron Howard Discusses His Documentary on the Iconic Tenor Luciano Pavarotti WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

Pavarotti in performance with his signature white handkerchief, which he started using as a young singer because he wasn’t sure what to do with his hands. Courtesy Photo Continued from Page 1 He had missteps and foibles, but at the end of the day, I felt there was an interesting paradox with this very common, earthy guy performing at that high level for so many years. The film is a blend of his life and what I could reveal about opera, what it takes to sing opera, and what opera can mean on an emotional level. I could offer audiences something a little surprising. That’s what drew me to make the film. When you were doing your research and interviewing people, did you discover something that surprised you? Ron: It was interesting to understand the way he navigated in the world. So on the one hand, he was not innocent, but he wanted people to like him, and he wanted to make people feel comfortable. At the same time, he was a shrewd businessman, and he cared about the deals. I was surprised at the way his career sort of flattened out. He went into a period of a kind of a malaise wherein he canceled appearances and was just down in general in the wake of some romances that didn’t work out. His marriage was over, but he didn’t feel he could get a divorce. Being Catholic and Italian made a divorce highly problematic for him and his family. Was it easy to get cooperation from his family? Ron: I didn’t interview his first wife Adua Veroni because I don’t speak Italian and I was directing “Solo – A Star Wars Story” at that time. I think the family was incredibly courageous. They gave us all a gift – not by just offering insight into Luciano - all his foibles and all his

10

disappointments - but also by giving us an object lesson in forgiveness. I didn’t expect that. None of us expected that to come out of those interviews and it wasn’t just Adua, it was also the daughters. Did someone in Pavarotti’s life positively impact him? Ron: I was surprised that Princess Diana, who I had an opportunity to meet a couple of times over the years and talked to her, had a profound effect on him. Her dedication to philanthropy seemed to reinvigorate him in a way, and he took that on himself. That was something that came out of the interviews. What is it about documentaries that you find particularly exciting? Ron: I always enjoyed them, and they satisfy my curiosity. They’re related to a lot

One of the most exciting moments in the film is the famous Three Tenors concert featuring José Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, and Plácido Domingo which was performed and recorded live in Rome. Courtesy Photo

of the narrative stories that I’ve done – the ones that are either based on real events or they’re fiction and meant to depict the world like the movie “The Paper.” I wanted the journalism to feel realistic even though it was a fictional story. There’s a lot of research involved. I always found that fascinating, and as I’ve done that, it’s made me more and more curious about what it would be like to make a documentary and take on that responsibility. In the three films I’ve done, I’ve had fantastic collaborators who were helping me understand that discipline. I find it very satisfying. It’s a departure in some ways from what I do when I’m directing a scripted narrative piece, but they’re more related than I expected it to be. What is the difference between making a narrative film vs. a documentary?

Ron: Basically, you’re skipping over the production side with a documentary and going right to post. Whenever I’m in post-production, I always forget about what it was like to shoot and just look at what we have and try to explore what its virtues are and what it can be. Actually, the big difference is that the story has to kind of define itself for you based on the acquired footage and what the interviewees have to say. So, you have your goals, you’ve done your research, you start thinking about what the story is going to be, but you can’t be sure. It does sort of present itself. When you’re working on a scripted project, you have a lot more editorial control over what it is you want to say and how you want to work with the story to say it. In this case, Pavarotti’s spirit informed every interview, and even if they were acknowledging

warts and disappointments, the takeaway was always that the scales dipped dramatically to the positive. His spirit and his sense of giving were pure, and something everyone respected and appreciated. Your film definitely fulfills his wish to bring opera to the masses. Ron: Thank you. If we accomplished that, I’d feel that we have helped Luciano Pavarotti to fulfill his agenda. Thank you so much for a gracious interview. Ron: Nice interview. Thank you. Stay tuned for Part 2 in which Ron Howard discusses transitioning from actor to director, how he chooses his scripts, and his directing approach.

‘Apollo 11’ Details the 1969 Moon Landing In 1961 President Kennedy committed the United States to land a man on the moon within the decade and then bring him safely back to earth. It has now been a halfcentury since the spacecraft “Apollo 11” left earth behind to fulfill Kennedy’s challenge. The date was July 6, 1969. In his documentary “Apollo 11” filmmaker Todd Douglas Miller chronicles this earthshattering event showing how scientists prepared for the historic flight to the moon. We then watch as three astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins suit up. They board Apollo 11 and are launched into space. Traveling at 25,000 miles an hour they speed to their destination, the moon- 240,000 miles away. From the vantage point of the astronauts, we look out into space and see our planet earth below, like a beautiful blue marble. As they orbit the moon, before landing, we view the moon’s powdery gray cratered surface. Collins remains aboard the lunar orbiter as Armstrong and Aldrin prepare to land on the moon’s

surface. Once the Eagle has landed, Armstrong opens the door and steps on the lunar surface saying, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” After leaving his footsteps on the face of the moon, Armstrong places an American flag in the moon’s soil. Data gathering equipment is set up. Next soil and rock samples are gathered to take back to planet earth. In the song, we speak of “the man in the moon,” but at this point, two men are standing on the moon. It’s a great accomplishment in world history. President Nixon acknowledged the astronauts said, “Our nation is one in our pride and one in our praise for what you have done.” For the first time in world history, man had left earth behind, leaving human footprints on the surface of the moon. Using recently discovered archival footage and audio from NASA, filmmaker Miller chronicles one of man’s greatest achievements. While we watch us feel as if we are a part of this grand adventure. The film is rated G

and is 93 minutes in length.

Hail and Farewell. This past week we lost two beloved performers--Doris Day, followed by Tim Conway. Doris Day began her career as a big band singer in 1939. One of her earliest hits was “Sentimental Journey” with Les Brown. She then went on to make 48 films, including “Calamity Jane,” “Pillow Talk”

with Rock Hudson and “The Man Who Knew Too Much” with Jimmy Stewart. She retired from films at an early age and became an animal rights activist. She left us on May 13, at age 97. Cause of death was pneumonia. Tim Conway made us laugh for years. He appeared in films like “The Apple Dumpling Gang” with Don Knotts, but is best known for his TV work on “The Carol Burnett Show.”

Tim was a wild and crazy guy who often cracked up co-star Harvey Korman during on-air skits. Even Carol had to keep from laughing when he did something totally unexpected. Tim had six children. His son Tim Conway Jr. hosts a comedy talk show on KFI radio. Like his dad, he too can make us laugh. Tim passed away on Tuesday, May 14, at the age of 85. He will be missed.

7 Steps Toward Superior Sleep

Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff While it’s fairly common knowledge that quality sleep is essential to overall wellness, there are several factors that can keep you from getting the rest you need. However, overcoming them is well within your control. “A lack of sleep can often be the result of poor habits, environmental variables or a combination of factors,” said Dr. Sujay Kansagra, an associate professor at Duke University Medical Center and sleep health expert for Mattress Firm. “Undiagnosed medical disorders aside, most people find that overcoming their sleep obstacles is very achievable.” Try improving your sleep with these seven tips from Kansagra: • Create an atmosphere conducive to sleep by choosing comfortable bedding and setting the thermostat to a temperature between 68-72 F. An ambient noise machine may drown out traffic and other sleep-disturbing sounds. If it’s not possible to completely darken your room, try installing dark-out curtains or wearing a sleep mask. • Blue light emitted by electronic devices and ambient light may delay or disrupt your sleep. It’s best to remove or limit cellphones and other sources of bright light from the bedroom at least 30 minutes before it’s time for you to fall asleep. • Establish a bedtime routine and stick to it. At about the same time each evening, listen to soothing music, read a book or take a warm bath or shower. Yoga moves that relax muscles and promote steady breathing can be helpful but avoid vigorous activity that accelerates your heart rate before bedtime. • Be conscious of factors that may affect the quality of your rest. If you have reflux or experience frequent back pain, your sleep may not be as restful. Consider upgrading your bed with an adjustable base that allows

12

DesertSTAR

you to change your sleep position with the simple push of a button. A slight elevation to your neck and head can

allow for a more open airway and a quieter night of sleep. Adjustable bases like those from Mattress Firm offer a

movable foundation for your mattress. Because of its adaptability, an adjustable base is suitable for sleepers with chronic pain or reflux, as well as the average sleeper looking for more comfort. • If your mattress shows signs of age, it may be the reason you have trouble falling asleep. There are several factors that determine the “shelf life” of your mattress, including quality and usage, so it’s important to evaluate your mattress regularly to make sure it’s still giving you the support you need for a good night’s sleep. • If you are unable to fall asleep after 20 minutes, try getting out of bed and doing something relaxing until you feel sleepy. Staying in bed and watching the clock increases your anxiety and can make it more difficult to drift off. • Remember that good

daytime habits promote better quality sleep at night. You may be rewarded with a better night’s sleep by exercising daily, maintaining a healthy and balanced diet and reducing or eliminating nicotine. Avoid naps during the day if possible, but if one is required, limit it to 30 minutes or less and take it early in the afternoon. Get outside during the morning to enjoy the benefits of natural light, which is a strong regulator of the biological clock. Not getting an appropriate amount of sleep can be detrimental to your physical and mental well-being and may pose serious health risks. Practical tools can be the perfect gift, and a pocket knife is such a useful choice that it’s hard to go wrong. For a more sentimental approach, consider a knife with a laser-cut personal message, or go ultra-functional with a multi-tool design. Keep in mind that lesser quality blades may require more frequent sharpening, but they’ll generally do the job just as well as pricier models. Also be conscious of the weight and features like safety catches that may affect comfort and usability.

Note to BLM on NM’s Chaco Canyon: ‘The Public is Watching’ By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — After a shortened publiccomment period, the Bureau of Land Management is planning to open land in the Greater Chaco region to more oil and gas development, even as Congress considers legislation to protect the culturally significant area. Miya King-Flaherty with the Rio Grande Sierra Club said the BLM is proposing up to 40 new fracking wells and 22 miles of new pipeline northwest of the community of Lybrook on the Navajo Nation. Previous administrations followed the National Environmental Policy Act and held 60-day public-comment periods, she said. But this one was only 10 days. “The public just doesn’t have ample time to be able to comment or oppose, or provide their reasons for why continued expansion of fracking is going to be a detriment to the area,” King-Flaherty said. In Congress, the Chaco Cultural Heritage Protection Act would prevent any future leasing or mineral

development on federal lands within a 10-mile radius around Chaco National Historical Park. Earlier this month, in a win for environmental groups, a federal court ruled some previous oil and gas drilling and fracking permits approved by the BLM for the region were illegal. The appeals court ruling stemmed from a 2015 lawsuit holding the BLM failed to consider the cumulative impacts to air, water and the Navajo Nation in its environmental assessment. Kyle Tisdel, energy program director and attorney with the Western Environmental Law Center, noted the court reversed only 25 drilling permits - but said it was still a big win. “I think not only will it reset the agency in terms of its decision-making processes going forward, but there are a whole host of decisions that the agency has already made over the last four or five years that are vulnerable based on the court’s decision,” Tisdel said. Last week, the BLM stripped its conservation-

Despite a court ruling favorable to environmental groups and a new bill in Congress to protect the area, the Trump administration has not backed off plans to drill within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. (Sierra Club) focused mission statement from agency news releases. The releases previously noted that the BLM sought to “sustain America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.” The new language highlights the “economic” value of public lands. King-Flaherty said the

BLM needs to remember the public is watching. “This is just another systematic way for the BLM to make sure the public’s concerns are not considered,” she said. “And it also goes to show that the BLM is really just prioritizing industry profit over protecting the environment, community health and safety.”

The BLM oversees more than 248 million acres of public land, primarily in the Western US. Disclosure: Sierra Club, Rio Grande Chapter contributes to our fund for reporting on Climate Change/Air Quality, Energy Policy, Public Lands/ Wilderness, Water.

consider adjusting your pre-bedtime consumption. Avoid caffeinated drinks, like or coffee or soda, and foods that take longer to digest, such as red meat.

Hydrate Accordingly: Especially during the summer, few things can be as refreshing as an ice-cold glass of water, which can help keep you energized and agile. Consider drinking water as your main form of hydration and limit your intake of drinks that may be high in sugar. Maintain a Nutritious Eating Plan: A healthy balance of nutrient-rich fruits, vegetables and protein are helpful ways to keep up personal health. On hot days, however, a bowl of ice cream may be more appealing. You can still indulge in a healthy way with an option like Re:Think Ice Cream, which is available in nine flavors that are low in sugar, calories and carbohydrates, according to Dr. Ryan Lazarus, MS, CSN, DC and a boardcertified nutrition specialist. “Many ice cream brands

use sweeteners that cause gastrointestinal issues and focus on calories rather than quality ingredients,” Lazarus said. “Re:Think is real ice cream, low in sugar, low-glycemic, provides polyphenols and promotes healthy gut flora. It’s an ideal combination that provides peace of mind so you can indulge with benefits.” Visit the Doctor Regularly: Try keeping doctor visits as one of your standard health priorities. Check-ins with your doctor can help ensure your body is in tip-top shape from a health professional’s perspective. Not to mention, it is also necessary to be regularly screened and vaccinated for diseases and common illnesses. Learn more about leading a healthy lifestyle at Rethinkicecream. us. Family Features

5 Healthy Tips for Summertime

By Desert Star Staff Healthy living doesn’t always require life-altering changes to your everyday schedule. Even with work obligations, family time or the unexpected twists and turns life can bring during the summer months, these five lifestyle tweaks to implement exercise, nutritious foods and refueling techniques can make a difference for long-term health benefits. Add Exercise to Your Daily Regimen: The longer days summer brings are a perfect opportunity to take your workouts outside. Whether kicking up the cardio or finding your innerharmony with yoga, the addition of a wellness activity can help you step toward your healthy lifestyle goals. However, keep in mind that changes to a routine can be a physical adjustment.

George Haymaker, founder of Re:Think Ice Cream and a recovering addict, knows all too well how hard it can be to make positive changes. “My recovery program addresses the well-being of my mind, body and spirit,” Haymaker said. “For exercise, I rotate between aerobic and anaerobic cardio days; two days of high-rep, high-intensity weight training; and a day of core, hip and back flexibility and strengthening. My objective is to feel so good, and good about myself, that the idea of changing my state of being with drugs or alcohol doesn’t even occur to me.” Sleep to Refuel: Just as much as staying active and eating nourishing food contributes to health, so does an expert recommended average of 7-9 hours of sleep each night. If sleep doesn’t come easy,

1. Cashing, borrowing against, canceling, transferring, disposing of, or changing the beneficiaries of any insurance or other coverage, including life, health, automobile, and disability, held for the benefit of the parties and their minor children; 2. Transferring, encumbering, hypothecating, concealing, or in any way disposing of any property, real or personal, whether community, quasi-community, or separate, without the written consent of the other party or an order of the court, except in the usual course of business or for the necessities of life; and 3. Creating a nonprobate transfer or modifying a nonprobate transfer in a manner that affects the disposition of property subject to the transfer, without the written consent of the other party or an order of the court. Before revocation of a nonprobate transfer can take effect or a right of survivorship to property can be eliminated, notice of the change must be filed and served on the other party. You must notify each other of any proposed extraordinary expenditures at least five business days prior to incurring these extraordinary expenditures and account to the court for all extraordinary expenditures made after these restraining orders are effective. However, you may use community property, quasi-community property, or your own separate property to pay an attorney to help you or to pay court costs. WARNING—IMPORTANT INFORMATION California law provides that, for purposes of division of property upon dissolution of a marriage, property acquired by the parties during marriage in joint form is presumed to be community property. If either party to this action should die before the jointly held community property is divided, the language in the deed that characterizes how title is held (i.e., joint tenancy, tenants in common, or community property) will be controlling, and not the community property presumption. You should consult your attorney if you want the community property presumption to be written into the recorded title to the property. Publish May 1, 8, 15, 22, 2019. 5 Tech Trends That Businesses Can’t Afford To Ignore By Desert Star Staff With technology evolving at such a rapid pace, some business owners are left digitally disoriented as they try to figure out which of the latest innovations they need to invest in and what they can ignore. It can make for confusing times. All that bewilderment aside, though, these fastdeveloping advances also create opportunities that can help small and medium-sized businesses become more competitive – if they understand how to seize them. “Technology exists today that at one time was available only to large corporations with huge technology budgets,” says Chris Hoose (www. choosenetworks.com), an IT consultant who works with small businesses. “Every year, technology becomes even more accessible to companies of all sizes.” Hoose says businesses that want to stay on top of their games should make sure they invest in these technological trends if they haven’t already: The Internet of Things. Many Internet of Thingsconnected devices, such as smart refrigerators and thermostats, are designed for home use, but there are

also applications for small businesses, Hoose says. Some examples: smart locks use digital keys that can’t be lost or stolen, and log a record of who uses a door and when; RFID tags on merchandise can prevent theft and automatically update inventory; and mobile-card readers can replace cash registers. Artificial intelligence. Don’t be fooled into thinking that AI is something only the big organizations can afford to use, Hoose, says. “It’s making inroads into technologies accessible for businesses of all sizes,” he says. “AI can help you offer increasingly personalized experiences to customers by maximizing your time and automating manual tasks, like data entry.” AI also can be used to improve decision making, Hoose says. Essentially, AI will help you take that jumble of data most businesses have and analyze it in a way that allows you to make betterinformed judgments on the actions you need to take. Telecommuting. The office world is changing, and more workers spend at least a portion of their work week telecommuting. “In many cases, remote employees use their equipment, which can eliminate some of the company’s costs with purchasing and maintaining

computers, printers, and mobile phones,” Hoose says. Video conferencing, instant messaging and other advances are helping to make telecommuting a viable option, he says. Customer-relationshipmanagement (CRM) software. Any application that a business uses to interact with customers, analyze data, or recommend products and services to customers is “part of the CRM family,” Hoose says. “This type of software helps your team manage, control and build customer relationships,” he says. “It can log your team’s touchpoints with prospects, including emails, phone calls, voicemails, and inperson meetings. You can have a complete record of your team’s interaction with a prospect that’s easy for anyone to access.” Voice search. Consumers increasingly are making use of such AI assistants like Siri or Alexa to help them do internet searches using their voices. “Voice search is changing the way people find information because these queries are structured differently than when we type terms into a search engine,” Hoose says. “Organizations of all types can benefit from optimizing their content to improve where they fall in a voice search.” “To help propel your

By Desert Star Staff As temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter, you might start taking your workouts outside more often. To ensure your body’s comfort and safety, you may need to refresh your fitness regimen. These tips can help you safely enjoy your summer workouts: Wear sweat-proof sunscreen. Protecting your skin is a year-round endeavor,

but when it’s hot outside, you’re more likely to lose the protection of sunscreen faster. Use a sunscreen that is designed to withstand your summer workout, whether it’s a good sweaty run or laps in a refreshing pool. Reapply a broad-spectrum formula with an SPF of 15 or higher regularly and be sure you’re using enough. Most people need a full ounce to cover their entire bodies.

Stay hydrated. In warmer weather, your body typically sweats at a higher rate, causing you to lose key electrolytes, like salt and potassium, that are important to keeping your body properly hydrated. Stay hydrated by drinking fluids before, during and after a workout. To mix up your hydration plan, consider choosing a water formulated for fitness, like Propel Vitamin Boost, which

business going forward, it’s important to stay abreast of technology innovation,” Hoose says. “These technologies will help you expand your customer base, create more efficient in-house processes, and increase engagement from both customers and staff.” About Chris Hoose: Chris Hoose (www.choosenetworks.

com) is the president of Choose Networks, an IT consulting firm for small businesses. Hoose started the company in 2001 to give large-scale solutions and support to businesses that can’t afford their own in-house IT department. He earned a Master of Information Systems Management from Friends University.

Take Your Workout Outdoors for a Fresh Boost is enhanced with 100% of the recommended daily value of vitamins B3, B5, B6, C and E and electrolytes to help replace what is lost in sweat. Find a workout buddy. There’s power – and safety – in numbers. Whether you grab a friend, coworker or pet, try exploring new places to work out for a change of scenery. Having a buddy by your side not only offers security, but also a boost of motivation. Together, you can work toward a common goal, keep each other accountable and encourage each other to crank up the intensity. Time workouts for cooler periods. Avoid exercising during the heat of the day. Instead, opt for morning or evening workouts and be

conscious of high humidity levels, which can adversely affect your respiration and lead to overheating. It’s also a good idea to acclimate to the warmer temperatures by starting with a brief workout and gradually increasing the duration over the span of a week or two. Wear appropriate clothes. Switching to summer attire isn’t just about wearing less material; you also need to pay attention to the fabric you wear. The appropriate fit may vary depending on your chosen activity, but generally, breathable fabric in lighter colors is ideal. s a child, you knew dad would be thrilled with whatever card or sculpture your creative mind could conjure. As an adult, you can still give him a homemade gift for Father’s Day, but with a grown-up twist he can appreciate just as much. Almost nothing beats a savory steak sizzling hot off the grill, and ribeyes are one of the most popular and flavorful cuts you can choose. Remember, though, not all ribeyes are the same. Learn about the different cuts and styles from the experts at Omaha Steaks:

Classic Ribeye Omaha-Cut Ribeye

The classic ribeye is rich and well-marbled, a true steak-lover’s steak with flavor that multiplies as marbling melts during cooking, creating buttery richness and irresistible steak flavor. A classic ribeye is easy to cook on the grill, in a pan or seared and roasted in the oven, and it’s easy to season since the rich beef flavor doesn’t require much help.

Bone-in Ribeye Cowboy Steaks

Ribeye Crown Steak

A Private Reserve Bone-In Ribeye, often called the “Cowboy Steak,” features flavor and tenderness with plenty of marbling for a signature ribeye taste. The bone-in cut not only lends even more flavor and extra juiciness, it makes for a striking presentation on a special occasion. Season lightly to let the steak’s natural flavors really shine, and have big plates ready to make a big impression.

A melt-in-your-mouth steak, the Private Reserve Ribeye Crown Steak is uniquely high in both tenderness and rich ribeye flavor. It’s cut from the richest, most buttery portion of the ribeye, and that intense marbling deepens the signature ribeye flavor while extra aging enhances the tenderness. This is a true entertaining selection, ideal for wowing a crowd.

Omaha-Cut Ribeye

King-Cut Ribeye on the Bone

This robust, richly-marbled ribeye is tall and thick, a distinct steak shape you normally find only in filet mignon. The cut, which is available exclusively from Omaha Steaks, combines the tender texture of the filet with the traditional rich, buttery ribeye flavor that makes it a steakhouse favorite. These juicy, flavorful ribeyes cook well thanks to their thicker size, which allows for a more uniform distribution of heat.

With a flavor-enhancing bone in the middle, this ribeye is truly distinctive. These cuts are perfect for smoking after a pan sear, or try slow-roasting, quickroasting or grilling over indirect heat. The three-pound cut might just break your plate, so plan on a platter and carve to serve. Explore more steak cuts for celebrating dad at OmahaSteaks.com.
