Recipe For Reasonable Rules
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL One important board responsibility is to adopt and enforce community rules. Developers, when creating common interest communities, provide CC&Rs and Bylaws (usually boilerplate), but typically do not create rules. So, it is up to the volunteer boards to create necessary and reasonable rules for their communities. Rules can cover many important topics, such as parking, community room use or architectural and landscaping standards.

Rules should be tailored to the needs of each community. However, the Civil Code does require each association to have certain rules. These required rules are: Internal dispute resolution procedures, election rules, delinquency enforcement policies, architectural modification application rules, and a schedule of fines. Rules must be written, per Civil Code 4350(a). From time to time, an association will describe to me “house rules” but cannot point to any place where the particular rule is written. Unwritten rules are traditions, not “rules,” and are unenforceable. Also, rules must be adopted per the process in Civil Code 4360. Keep it simple. Draft rules in straightforward language. Rules should be clear and concise. Avoid overly complex rules, because most likely the manager, board and homeowners will not remember all the technicalities in a complicated rule set.
Consider starting each rule section with a positive introductory statement. Beginning a section of rules with a short explanation about the purpose of the rules makes a more positive statement to the community, and hopefully increases community compliance by the residents. People do not like being told “because I said so”, regardless of age, and explaining the importance of the rules shows respect. Avoid having separate rules for kids. Rules cannot single out children for treatment different than adults, because that violates current Fair Housing laws. Some day, hopefully the law will allow reasonable safety standards to be applied to children, but presently, the law does not. For example, do not ban children skateboarding in hallways, just ban skateboarding in the hallways. Some broad terms are acceptable. It is unnecessary to try to define every possible
issue, or manner of nonneighborly behavior. Using words such as “reasonable” and “nuisance” are ok. Let the lawyer have a peek. Before publishing the proposed rule change to the members, send it to the association attorney for a brief review. Attorneys are trained to draft and edit documents, and may spot legal problems with a proposed rule. Check the other governing documents. Make sure the rules are consistent with the CC&Rs and bylaws. Per Civil Code 4205, rules may not contradict the bylaws and CC&Rs, unless something in the CC&Rs or bylaws violates current law – then the rules can follow the law. When considering a proposed possible new rule, make sure the issue is something the board is willing to enforce. Some issues are difficult to enforce, and it is better not to have a rule than to have one which is not enforced.
When establishing or updating the association schedule of fines, remember that the same fine amount may not work for each type of rule violation. Fines should deter but not be punitive. If, at the board meeting to formally adopt a rule change, a significant number of members oppose the rule, consider restarting the process and modifying the proposed change. Successful communities adopt and reasonably enforce necessary, clear, and reasonable rules.
By Janice Gough EightySeven.Five percent (87.5%) of firms filing for bankruptcy worldwide in the first quarter of 2016 were U.S. firms. This percentage equates to Ten times greater than the default rate facing riskier economics in emerging markets. As corporations with marginal debt look to stay alive, they must refinance their current debt as maturing obligations come due. Long term debt will require higher interest rates. Interest rates are climbing by 25 basis points as Federal Reserve Chairman, Janet Yellen has proposed two more possible increases in interest rates this year. Long term debt tends to be more expensive forcing bankruptcies to accelerate. Maturity dates on marginal debt are also trimmed when investment opportunities are less productive. Corporation leverage is at a twelve-year high and, perhaps, more worrisome. growing numbers of companies (one-third globally) are failing to generate high enough returns on investments to cover their cost of funding. As these dynamics take place, corporate bankruptcy is more likely. This captures the essence of the deflationary dilemma, causing the crumbling of the greater economy. Revenue streams will be too skimpy to cover debt costs, setting the stage for painful adjustments. It is not rocket science, simply put, customers will
not have the money to spend and we will see more businesses fold. As inflation increases, the percentage of goods and services that can be purchased with the same amount of money decreases. Consumer confidence is psychological but can have a real impact on any economy. Americans’ lack of cash is reflected in the growing surge of consumer bankruptcy filings. In the past year, they have climbed by 5% with January reports showing 52,421 filings. Credit card companies are reporting 30% increases in charge offs over last year. Another indicator show auto loan delinquencies growing to 6%, which is higher than the 2008-2009 financial crisis. Auto dealers have increased incentives for new cars to as high as $3600, a $500 increase over prior year, cutting profits to move product! Current inflation is at 2%. Inflation reduces real wages, which means that the cost of goods and services will increase while your pay will be stagnant. We could see a recession declared soon. Economic recession is a period of general economic decline and is typically accompanied by a drop in the stock market, an increase in unemployment, and a decline in the housing market. Generally, a recession is less severe than a depression. The blame for a recession generally falls on the federal leadership, often either the president himself, the head of the Federal Reserve, or the entire administration. For most investors, I believe it is time to
back away from the market. History tells us that if the Price of a Stock to the company’s earnings per share must be in the range of 10 times before a recovery occurs. The Standard & Poor’s 500 is currently 25.19 % with P/E s as high as 30 for the overall market. Investments in the broader market have never worked with P/E ratios are 20 or higher.

Keep Your Cool This Summer with These Organization Tips By Desert Star Staff Summer is often associated with lazy days spent picnicking and swimming, but most of us know that these months are often the most actionpacked, making organization as important as ever. To keep it all together this summer, consider the following tips and tricks. Mix it Up: Spend less time in the trenches of your closet and dresser drawers. Take an hour to move all your favorite summer clothing and accessories to the most accessible places in your closet, so getting dressed is simple all season long. Move items to the back that you won’t need or want to see for a while, so they don’t get in your way. Bye-bye heavy wool sweaters, hello short sleeve button-ups and sundresses! You are likely invited to many social gatherings
this summer. Whether it’s a garden party celebrating a marriage or a luau celebrating a birthday, take this opportunity to crosscheck your calendar with your closet, doing a quick inventory to ensure you have the items you need for all the festivities of summer. Write it Down: Don’t commit important dates to memory. Commit them to paper. You may already have a wall or desk planner, but you are on the -go a lot, so keep a planner with you at all times to track appointments, flight times, gift registries and other critical information. Writing things down is not only useful, it gives you a way of looking back and remembering all the summer fun you had long after the season has ended. To get this habit to work for you, choose a planner that matches your needs and suits your style. For example, the floral planners from AT-
A-GLANCE are evocative of summer, and are not only functional, but make a nice accessory. They come in sizes ranging from pocket to extra-large, and are offered in various formats, including daily, weekly and monthly. Rev Your Engine Hitting the road this summer? Whether you are traveling near or far, you’ll want to make sure your car is as ready as you are. If you aren’t comfortable performing the inspection yourself, take it into the shop. They will ensure you have proper air pressure in your tires and enough windshield wiper fluid, coolant, brake fluid and oil, among other tests and measures. You can prep your car, too, for summer fun and adventure. Toss a blanket in the trunk for the season in case of spontaneous picnicking. Pack games, books and other distractions, and
a cooler full of snacks and water for longer car trips. It can be easy to let adventure stand in the way of organization. But nothing ruins
summer fun quite as quickly as forgetting where you want to be. Keep your home, your car and yourself organized all summer long. StatePoint
Express Your Casual Side: “Whether you’re looking to take the Bohemian style to the next level or you love a cool and sporty outfit, there are so many ways to pull off a casual look this season -- plus plenty of footwear to choose from,” says Moeller. Get Comfortable: Selecting pretty and elegant fashion options doesn’t have to translate to swollen and sore feet at the end of the day! In fact, footwear manufacturers have created clever ways to deliver more comfortable choices. Consider this: • Block heels and wedges are on trend, easy to wear and easy to walk in! • Popular materials, such as velvet and suede,
are comfortable and soft to the touch. • Hidden construction features, such as zippers on the back and Velcro strapping, make a shoe easier to slip on -- rather than a closure that isn’t designed to “give” when placing over the foot. “How you define femininity and stay casual and comfortable is an individual choice. This season’s fashion footwear choices cover all the bases,” says Moeller. To find footwear for any occasion this spring, check out Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse. By Desert Star Staff The benefits of music education are endless. Studies have associated music education with higher test scores, improved concentration and more. But if you are a parent, you probably know how it goes: many children will begin a music program with enthusiasm, only to complain about practicing a short time later, sometimes even asking to quit. Music should never be a chore, however. In honor of Make Music Day, celebrated June 21st, here are tips for parents to incorporate music
into their family routine in ways that are fun and positive. • Plan a music night. Create an evening where all activities revolve around music. Take turns at the karaoke machine. Play a music-themed trivia game. Hold a family concert night or talent show where everyone gets a chance to perform. Sing instead of speak. Watch a favorite musical. • Take a class together. You can inspire by example by taking a music class with your child. You don’t necessarily need to find a class designed for parents and
kids, although there are plenty of such classes available. • Use new tools and tech. New tools can be used at home to make music fun. For example, Casio keyboards feature a Dance Music Mode, which divides the piano keyboard into different instrument sections, like drums, bass and more. Fifty built-in styles, as well as familiar effects like stutter and filter, make it easy and fun for anyone to create and remix dance music. Natural Ways to Support Infant Health During Pregnancy
By Desert Star Staff In the last 10 years, scientists have learned that having enough beneficial gut bacteria is a critical component of overall health. Now, research shows that ensuring newborns have sufficient exposure to probiotic bacteria during infancy and early childhood can give them a head start on lifelong wellness. What makes bacteria so important? Well, with nearly 80 percent of the immune system residing in the gut, a healthy microbial makeup from birth is essential for proper immune system development and optimal digestive, metabolic, and brain function. When looking to encourage a healthy infant microbiome (AKA the array of bacteria and microorganisms in the body), science tells us that the mother’s gut health is key. Here’s how it works: during pregnancy, babies are exposed to their mother’s bacteria in the placenta, which harbors a variety of microbes. A baby’s immune
system begins to develop just after birth, during which a mother passes on her beneficial bacteria to her child (often termed “seeding the microbiome”) as he or she passes through the vaginal canal and partakes in breast milk and skin-to-skin contact. Then, through an interactive connection between host cells and the baby’s brand new gut microbiome (inherited directly from the mother), helpful microorganisms selectively colonize the gut and participate in the maintenance and promotion of the child’s immune system. Expecting and nursing mothers can be proactive by ensuring their gut health is in tip-top condition, since the microbes they pass on to their infant can help establish a solid foundation for lifelong health. In addition to directly replenishing their good bacteria, moms should do their best to stay well-rested and properly hydrated while paying close attention to their diet. Focusing on getting proper prenatal nutrition in
the form of whole and plantbased foods, especially those rich in prebiotic fiber is important. It’s also helpful to be mindful of factors that deplete good bacteria, like antimicrobials, stress, environmental toxins and exposure to unnecessary antibiotics. Many doctors, midwives and other experts are touting the health benefits of one supplement for expecting and new mothers believed to increase a child’s chances for a healthy start at life: probiotics. “As a mom, the best gift you can give your baby is a healthy microbiome,” says Jamie Morea, cofounder of Hyperbiotics, a company that specializes in probiotic supplements and has developed the first probiotic formula designed specifically for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Hyperbiotics PRO-Moms includes time-release delivery for enhanced effectiveness, ensuring the living organisms survive stomach acids to colonize within the gut. Not only can probiotics
help with digestive discomfort during pregnancy, but an effective supplement can repopulate a mother’s system and help ensure she is passing on the best and most beneficial bacteria to her children. To learn more about how to support optimal gut health for moms and babies, visit hyperbiotics.com or join
the conversation on social media at #followyourgut. Because gut and microbial health have an overwhelming impact on lifelong wellness, tending to it while expecting is one of the most important things to consider for mothersto-be in order to properly pave the path of health for little ones. waiver. Jennings estimates that many seniors’ out of pocket costs could more than double. Supporters of the AHCA say it will reduce the deficit and give people more freedom by eliminating the government mandate to buy insurance. Jennings suggests that Senators Flake and McCain try to improve Obamacare rather than replacing it wholesale with a bill that could cost tens of millions of people to lose health insurance. “This is a bad piece of legislation,” he adds. “We’d like to see the Senate start from scratch and come up
with something that is more fair and does a better job of holding down costs.” Statistics show that 39 percent of Arizonans ages 50 to 64 have a pre-existing condition. If the state requests a waiver, the AHCA would allow insurance companies to charge those people much higher premiums. Some of them would be funneled into high-risk pools and offered premium assistance, but critics say the funding for the high-risk pools is gravely insufficient, and would price many people out of the health insurance market.
Arizona Senior Advocates Assail Republican Health Care Plan
the Congressional Budget Office, senior advocates in Arizona are slamming it as unfair and unaffordable.
AARP recently sent a letter to every U.S. Senator claiming that the American Health Care Act, or AHCA, would cause huge premium spikes because it no longer forces insurance companies to take a person’s ability to pay into account when setting rates. Stephen Jennings, the associate state director at AARP Arizona, says the AHCA benefits corporations more than it helps everyday citizens. “It gives tax breaks to big drug and health insurance companies, and allows health insurance companies to overcharge older Americans thousands of dollars a year,” he says. “It shortens the life of Medicare, leaving the door open to benefit cuts and Medicare vouchers.” The bill would allow insurance companies to charge adults between the ages of 50 and 64 five times as much as younger people, and more than that if the state seeks a

A pint a day keeps the doctor away Research proves moderate drinking is good for you
By Desert Star Staff Drinking alcohol within recommended limits could be better for you than not drinking at all when it comes to avoiding heart disease, new research has found. Consuming within the recommended limits of around one-and-a-half bottles of wine or seven regular-strength lagers per week could lower your risk of getting certain heart diseases.Researchers at the University of Cambridge
and University College London analyzed data from almost 2 million people in the UK, and found that those who do not drink at all, or who drink heavy doses, are more likely to be affected by seven types of heart condition – including strokes and heart attacks – than moderate drinkers. Lead researcher Steven Bell told the Independent that the findings, however, are not a reason for teetotalers to take up drinking, as there are
By Desert Star Staff Low-income families in Arkansas have seen significant improvements in health care under the state’s expanded Medicaid program, but proposed changes could put those gains in jeopardy. A new study says states, including Arkansas, that expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act have had greater access to care and better health outcomes, compared to states such as Texas that chose not to expand the program. Study co-author, Benjamin Sommers, associate professor of health policy at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, says researchers found under Medicaid expansion, low-income adults came out way ahead. “The coverage rates went way up in Arkansas and Kentucky,” he points out. “They went up by a little bit in Texas, but not nearly as much. And that this coverage really led to dramatic changes in a variety of different ways as to the types of medical care that people were getting.”
Sommers says in Arkansas, Medicaid has cut the uninsured rate by more than 20 percent, significantly increased the number of patients with a regular source of care and has more Arkansans saying their health is excellent. But policy changes under consideration in Little Rock and Washington could erode those gains. Marquita Little, health policy director with Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, says state officials have proposed a plan to cut Medicaid enrollees, despite what she sees as pockets of poverty with an overwhelming need for expanded coverage. “Chronic illnesses and poor health outcomes really disproportionately affect the rural counties, where access tends to be much more limited,” she states. “So, that certainly would have a major impact, and really impede some progress that we are making in our state.” Little worries that proposed changes to the ACA could make health

James Nicholls, director of research and policy development at Alcohol Research UK, said the study added “important” evidence to the subject. “A particular strength of this study is that, because of the numbers involved, the researchers are able to separate out different risks for different heart conditions,” he said. “The idea that ‘alcohol is good for the heart’ overlooks the fact that there are a wide range of heart conditions and that, knowing what we do about the biological effects of alcohol, the effect of drinking on these conditions should vary,” Nicholls added. “This study confirms that alcohol produces different patterns of risk, depending whether we are looking at, say, myocardial infarction or angina.” The research findings have also been welcomed by Harvard Medical School and John Hopkins Public School of Health in the US, as they claim it paves the way for future collection of bulk data that would lead to “reliable, and unbiased findings.”

Single Payer Health Care Bill Passes Assembly By Desert Star Staff ALBANY, N.Y. – A single payer health plan would bring affordable health care to all New Yorkers if a measure approved Tuesday in the State Assembly becomes law. It would make New York the first state in the nation to give every resident health care. The care would be paid for by an employment-based premium tied to income with employers paying 80 percent. According to Dr. Oliver Fein, chair of the New York Chapter of Physicians for a National Health Plan, it would provide quality health care with no copays or deductibles. “It would be very comprehensive and, I think, be an improvement over Medicare and an improvement, frankly, over most employer-based health insurance,” he states. While the Assembly now has passed the New York Health Act three years in a row, so far the Senate has failed to act on the legislation. Fein notes that a single payer system could significantly reduce costs by negotiating with pharmaceutical companies
The New York Health Act would ensure that every New Yorker has access to health care. General ‘cause they’re similarly sized hospitals,” he states. “Toronto General, three people dealing with billing. At the Mass. General, over 350.” Fein adds that while
private insurance companies spend about 20 percent on administrative costs, for Medicare that figure is only 3 percent. In the Senate, 30 Democrats are backing the measure, but it has no Republican sponsor. With the growing public awareness of the potential
impact of a federal repeal of the Affordable Care Act, Fein feels there is a chance the bill could finally pass. “It is very possible that a Republican might see it in their interest, frankly, to swing over and support it,” he states. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has not taken a position on the bill.

Consumer Safety Could Be at Risk, Bill’s Opponents Say
The Regulatory Accountability Act could increase consumer exposure to known toxins, say opponents. (John Morgan/flickr.com) By Desert Star Staff MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Regulatory Accountability Act (S-951) sounds innocuous enough, but consumer and public-health advocates say it’s anything but. The RAA claims

to eliminate red tape for manufacturers, but environmental groups say the measure essentially would ban agencies from keeping pesticides and bacteria such as salmonella out of food, keeping lead out of water, and from
preventing exposure to known carcinogens such as asbestos. Anne Kelly is the senior program director of public policy at the Ceres BICEP Network, a nonprofit representing big-name companies interested in May24, 2017
sustainability, including Nike, Coca-Cola, Dell and Apple. She says public health is at stake. “This is an elaborate environmental-law infrastructure that has been put in place over the last 40 years, and to unravel those protections would really put our public health at great risk,” she says. Critics say the bill creates so many new requirements that it would paralyze regulators working to establish even the most basic rules and standards. They also say it makes cutting industry’s and banks’ costs a higher priority than protecting public health and safety. Congressman Steve Cohen (D-9th District) of Memphis spoke out against a version of the Act proposed in the U.S. House earlier this year. “There’s always a side that loses, and the side that loses is the consumers and the folks that will be injured and/or killed because of lack of regulations,” he explains. “I don’t know how much one life is worth, but it’s worth a lot no matter who it is, and there are going to be lots of people who will not survive.”
Proponents say the Regulatory Accountability Act will ensure that health and environmental regulations are transparent and based on the best available science. Kelly says the RAA ignores long-held beliefs about public health, consumer and food safety. “These are based on science, these are based on risk-assessment, and they really are grounded in the specialized expertise of the relevant agencies like the EPA and the FDA,” she adds. “And they need to be taken seriously. Not to suggest that improvements should not be made, but this is really wrong-headed.” According to the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, the bill would replace an already industry-friendly rulemaking process with something even worse than one that currently only applies to the Federal Trade Commission; an agency that hasn’t attempted to enact a major rule in decades.

‘Jersey Boys’ -- Oh What a Night at the Ahmanson
L-R: Keith Hines, Mark Ballas, Cory Jeacoma and Matthew Dailey in the national tour of “Jersey Boys” See page 9. Photo by Jim Carmody.
Photo by Gene Schiavone For many people in show business there are only six degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon. For me, there is just one degree of separation between the Four Seasons, AKA the Jersey Boys and me. It’s my sister Ellen whose chemistry lab partner at Plainfield High was Don Ciccone, who joined the group in the early 70s. In those days, all the “Jersey” girls in my family would put our nickel in the jukebox at a local New Jersey diner to hear their songs. Ah, those were the days—and that was the music of the times. In 2005, the musical hit “Jersey Boys” debuted on Broadway and in 2007, the tune filled production arrived at the Ahmanson Theatre for the first time. Now the show is back on stage at the Ahmanson. This time Frankie
Valli, lead singer of the group, is sung by Mark Ballas one of the star dancers on the popular TV show “Dancing With the Stars.” Bob Gaudio, the group’s prolific hit composer and singer is performed by Cory Jeacoma with Keith Hines and Matthew Dailey rounding out the cast as Nick Massi and Tommy DeVito. The music still appeals to all age groups from millennial to octogenarian. This was apparent on opening night as the audience cheered the cast when they took their bows and were joined on stage by the one and only Frankie Valli himself. The show details the life and times of the Four Seasons from their earliest beginnings to their eventual stardom. In those days, young Italian guys growing up in Jersey could either become a priest, a mobster or make it in the music
business. Lucky for them and for us, they chose the latter. The entire show is filled to the brim with such iconic hits as “Oh What a Night,” which begins the first act, to “Sherry,” “Walk Like a Man,” ”My Eyes Adored You,” “Let’s Hang On to What We’ve Got,” “Rag Doll,” “Working My Way Back to You” and the truly romantic “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You.” In fact, there are too many song titles to list them all. And each and everyone has the power to make you feel good. If you have seen the show before, back in 2007 or in Las Vegas, this production is not quite as dramatically nuanced but it still remains a night filled with unforgettable music that leaves you singing on your way out of the theatre. You will also be thinking—oh, what a night! Des McAnuff directed the show, with choreography by Sergio Trujillo. The book is by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice with music by Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe. “Jersey Boys” runs through June 24 at the Ahmanson
Theatre, 135 North Grand Ave, Downtown L.A. For tickets and information go online to www.centertheatregroup. org or call (213) 628-2772. At the Ballet: “Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center” is a wonderful way to experience balletic performances. This past weekend, May 19 to May 21, the Scottish Ballet was in town with their dance version of Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Wordlessly the troupe interpreted the entire story in dance. Well, there was one word in the production. That word was: STELLA!! If you have not had the pleasure of seeing Glorya Kaufman’s presentations, and you are a ballet aficionado, mark your calendars for the weekend of June 23-25 when the Boris Eifman Ballet Company of St. Petersburg presents “Tchaikovsky,” a revealing look into the inner struggles and personal demons of the famed composer. The gifted
choreographer did in-depth research into Tchaikovsky’s private and creative worlds and the environment that led to his torment. This is a new version of the ballet that debuted in 1993. Eifman’s enigmatic and contemporary choreography explores the composer’s complex sexuality, his inner break-up and personality dislocation and his journey through the creative process. The ballet is set to Tchaikovsky’s most popular symphonies, and the ballet shows characters from his work that materializes as demons, fairies and the like. Eifman is one of the most charismatic choreographers working in the world of ballet today. His ballets “Anna Karenina” and “Rodin” were both performed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and they were spectacular. Prices for “Tchaikovsky” start at $34 and are available online at www.musiccenter. org/eifman , by phone at (213) 972-0711 or at the theatre box office located at 135 North Grand Ave. in downtown L.A.
getting ready to go out. The UK’s ‘wine o’clock’ culture, in which women regularly drink at home, consuming cheap alcohol bought from supermarkets, has also contributed to the increase. The change is also partly the result of successful marketing campaigns and the creation of sweeter products aimed at young women or girls, as well as cuts in price. Researchers say women are now causing increasing amounts of damage to
their health as a result. “Alcohol use and alcohol use disorders have historically been viewed as a male phenomenon,” the authors say. “The present study calls this assumption into question and suggests that young women in particular should be the target of concerted efforts to reduce the impact of substance abuse and related harms.” Women’s bodies do not tolerate alcohol as well as men’s because they have a higher fat-to-water ratio, meaning the alcohol in their systems remains more concentrated. Women also have smaller livers than men, making it harder to process alcohol safely.

Women are finally equal to men.. in alcohol consumption at least
By Desert Star Staff The gender gap in alcohol consumption has almost vanished, according to a new study, which says women are binge drinking nearly as much as men due to a booming ‘wine o’clock’ culture. The research looks at the convergence of drinking habits between men and women over time from 1891 to 2014. It pools the results of 68 international studies published since 1980 to look at the changing ratio of male to female drinking.t says www.desertstarweekly.com
young men born between 1991 and 2001 are just 1.1 times more likely to drink at all than women of the same age. That can be compared to men who were born between 1981 and 1910 who were 2.2 times more likely to drink than women. The research, published in the medical journal BMJ Open, also found men born in the early 1900s were three times as likely to drink to problematic levels, and are now just 1.2 times as likely to binge drink. The trend is partly driven
by the decline of the maledominated pub, researchers say. Those who have succeeded in obtaining jobs that were once reserved for men may have also found it necessary to become part of the after-work drinking culture. Images of celebrities enjoying themselves on nights out have also helped remove some of the stigma attached to drinking by women. Some of the drinks now available have been targeted at young women who ‘pre-load’ while May 25, 2017

Small glass of wine or beer a day increases breast cancer risk By Desert Star Staff Women who enjoy beer or wine may want to reconsider ordering a second round – or even their first one – the next time they’re at the bar, according to a new report which found that a small alcoholic beverage is all it takes to raise the risk of breast cancer. The report from the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research, released Tuesday, found that drinking just 10 grams of alcohol per day – equivalent to one small glass of wine, an 8oz beer, or 1oz of hard liquor – raises the risk of breast cancer. The increased risk was more profound in postmenopausal women (9 percent increase) than in premenopausal women (5 percent increase).
However, any risk posed by just 10 grams of alcohol is big news, as the average alcoholic beverage (like a 12oz beer can) typically contains around 14 grams. The report is part of the Continuous Update Project (CUP), which analyzes global cancer prevention and survival research by studying links between cancer and diet, nutrition, physical activity, and weight. The Tuesday report is based on the evaluation of 119 studies which include data on 12 million women from across the globe. It is the first study of its kind since 2010. “I was most surprised by the alcohol result, that risk increases at just one drink a day on average,” lead study researcher Dr. Anne Tiernan told Medical Daily.
The study did, however, have some good news to report – premenopausal women who practice vigorous exercise such as running or biking can decrease their breast cancer risk by 17 percent. The same exercises can lead to a 10 percent decreased risk in postmenopausal women. “Physically active individuals who exercise outdoors are also likely to have higher sunlight exposure and consequently increased Vitamin D, which may influence cancer risk,” the report states. The study also noted that being overweight or obese throughout adulthood increases the risk of postmenopausal cancer, and that breastfeeding decreases the risk. Meanwhile, the pros and cons of alcohol have long been debated in medical
circles. According to a study released in March, drinking alcohol within recommended limits could be better for you than not drinking at all when it comes to avoiding heart
disease. Another study one month prior found that brain damage among drinkers aged 50 and above has trebled over the past 10 years.
and its political influence, that was definitely a milestone for – not just on divestment, divestment is part of that – but on the work on climate change,” he states. President Donald Trump, who will attend the G-7 meetings, has taken steps to block the Clean Power Plan – the primary U.S. strategy for reaching goals set in Paris. Trump has not made clear whether his administration will uphold America’s commitments to reduce carbon emissions, and has called climate change a hoax. Last week, fossil fuel giant Dutch Shell’s CEO told NPR that climate change is real, and that a worldwide transition to clean energy will be necessary to keep global temperatures from rising to dangerous levels. BP, Chevron and
Exxon Mobil also support the Paris agreement. Cadan says he hopes the divestment moves made by faith leaders and other economic realities will convince U.S. leaders to face facts. “And therefore it will be unreasonable for the U.S. to continue as business as usual because they won’t be able to create or participate or compete in the global economy,” he stresses. According to a report by the University of Oxford, nearly 600 institutions worth more than $3.4 trillion have made divestment commitments. Cadan adds that 22 percent of those have come from religious institutions including the World Council of Churches and The Lutheran World Federation.

Winners of the Holocaust Creative Art & Writing Contest. Courtesy of The Tolerance Education Center/Talia Lizemer-Hawley By Pamela Price The Tolerance Education Center’s participation in this year’s Holocaust Memorial Observance, Yom Hashoah, was the fourth (?) year their Annual Holocaust Creative & Writing Contest presented art and essays submitted in the Junior Division, (grades 8-9) and high-school students (grades 10-12) from the Coachella Valley. The topic this year was The Danger of Spreading Hate: Then-Nazi Propaganda, Today-Social Media. This year’s controversial theme was the subject of essays and art that reverberate with today’s
students in a variety of ways as demonstrated by the Junior and Senior Divisions. The awards funded by The Jewish Federation of the Desert were presented by Ellen Glass and Stephanie Ross, co-Chairs. The panels of judges were Sandra Elkins, Dennis Jory, Debra Star and Charlie Ciali for Art and Bev Irom, Joan Moyer and Pam Price for Essays. Walker Risenmay a student at Palm Desert (Springs) Charter Middle School was awarded first place for his essay, which delved into the dangers of propaganda, specifically how it has emerged during the Internet era. his teacher Kristin Wagner Palm Desert Middle School asking her how she presented this year’s theme, on Propaganda to her class. She said that she presented the Essay competition to her students by briefing them on the issues of tolerance. “Our class is one, which integrates social studies and language arts, the curriculum in literature based,” she said. She also mentions that her winning student was one of 460 students visiting the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Los Angeles as part of a field trip project. “This added to their understanding of the
Holocaust as the Museum has in depth exhibits, which explore the intent of propaganda during the Nazi era. This exposure had an impact upon the students, such as Walker, who comprehended how propaganda can be used, whether it be for evil or good.” The impact of the Internet in propaganda was mentioned in many of the essays and art submissions and (as) reflected in essays by other winners, in the Junior and Senior Division; Aaliya ( Alaya) Lopez, Shadow Hills High School, Stephany Herrera, Raymond Cree Middle School and in

MUSIC Doheny Blues Festival BY ROBERT KINSLER
As Orange County’s most celebrated and enduring live music event, it’s no surprise that the 20th Annual Doheny Blues Festival offered a slew of great sets and attracted blues fans from throughout California on May 20-21, 2017. The seaside event featured a total of 23 artists playing on three stages, as well as a fulllength breakfast set staged outside the front gates each morning. Here is a recap of a dozen highlights this writer caught over the sun-drenched weekend in Dana Point. As the first artist to perform on the Doheny Stage on Saturday, the Casey Hensley set the tone for the strong day to come. Armed with a powerful voice, the San

An artist whose recordings and concert appearances seem to get better and more compelling as time goes on, songs from her latest disc “Love Wins Again” were particularly affecting on the intimate Backporch Stage. The full set was terrific, with “Love Wins Again” and “As Long As I Can See the Light” showcasing Magness’ amazing voice and artistry. Classics such as “Ordinary Average Guy” and “Life’s Been Good” and the timely “Analog Man” were delivered effectively to cap Saturday. Sunday’s run of sterling performances got off to a quick start via a memorable parking lot set from the Mighty Mojo Prophets, with the Chicago blues-heavy “Lucky Man,” and speedy “West Coast Girl” thrilling a good-sized audience catching the quartet. The Backporch featured two must-see performances on Sunday. First up came Junior Brown blending his wry style of original songcraft and dazzling guitar chops (all delivered on his two-neck guit-steel instrument which features an electric guitar on top and lap steel guitar below) for a 70-minute crowd-pleasing set. Armed with his bass-baritone voice, the Cottonwood, Arizona native unleashed a mix of country, blues and surf-flavored originals. Favorite “Highway Patrol” and several new songs were simply outstanding; Doheny is the rare festival willing to feature seminal artists so early in the day. Following was groundbreaking Kansas trio Moreland & Arbuckle. The band’s fiery 80-minute performance came in the midst of the threesome’s farewell tour. Singer-harmonica virtuoso Dustin Arbuckle, guitarist Aaron Moreland and drummer Kendall Newby attracted cheers and standing ovations as they tore through a fast-moving set of originals and select covers. Manchester suicide bomber named by police
By Desert Star Staff Greater Manchester Police have named the suicide bomb suspect as Salman Abedi, 22. The attack on Monday night at Manchester Arena, which killed 22 people, including children, was carried out by a suicide bomber who died at the scene. Some 59 people were also injured in the blast. Chief Constable Ian Hopkins told journalists: “I can confirm that the man suspected of carrying out last night’s atrocity has been named as 22-year-old Salman Abedi. However, he has not yet been formally identified and I wouldn’t wish, therefore, to comment further. “The priority remains to establish whether he was acting alone or as part of a network.”Hopkins added that a 23-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the attack. Hopkins says police have also exercised two warrants, one in Whalley Range and one in Fallowfield, that included a controlled explosion to enable a safe entry. British police had asked the media to hold off on publishing the attacker’s name. Several American news organizations including CBS and NBC ignored the request, however, citing anonymous US officials who leaked the
details from their conversations with British authorities. The Prime Minister’s spokesperson was asked during a press briefing on Tuesday afternoon whether they were concerned that information passed to the US had apparently been leaked without their consent by US officials. They were also asked whether they could trust that such sensitive information could be passed to the White House in future. The spokesperson replied simply that they “would not comment on leaks,” according to Business Insider. Asked to confirm the attacker’s name, the spokesperson replied: “Greater Manchester Police said that confirmation would take place after formal ID had been confirmed and that is where they are.”The Telegraph reports Abedi was born in Manchester in 1994, and was the second youngest of four children. His parents were reportedly Libyan refugees who came to the UK to escape the Gaddafi regime. While the working theory is that the perpetrator triggered the blast alone, the national counter-terror network are urgently piecing together his background to see whether he had any help in planning the attack. Reuters reports Abedi
traveled to Manchester from London by train before carrying out the attack. Police terror raids continue after man arrested in connection with attack Bomb squads swooped on a home in the Manchester suburb of Fallowfield to carry out a “controlled explosion” as part of an ongoing terrorism investigation, according to police. Residents in Fallowfield posted footage of armed police close to a house on Elsmore Road on Tuesday. Some took to Twitter to report “loud explosions.”Police
have also raided a property in nearby Whalley Range. “Police have executed warrants, one in Whalley Range, and one in Fallowfield, where a controlled explosion took place, as part of the investigation into last night’s horrific attack at the Manchester arena,” police said in a brief statement.A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the Manchester bomb attack, police say. “With regards to the ongoing investigation into last night’s horrific attack at the Manchester arena,
we can confirm we have arrested a 23-year-old man in South Manchester,” Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.Speaking outside Downing Street on Tuesday, May said the attacker had chosen the time and the place to attack and cause “maximum carnage and to kill and injure indiscriminately.” May said security services “believe the attack was carried out by one man” but need to find out whether “he was acting alone or part of a wider group.” If others are responsible for the attack, they will be brought to justice, she said.
Flynn pleads 5th as Stone, Manafort send documents to Senate By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser has invoked the Fifth Amendment in response to a Senate request for documents in relation to its Russia probe, with his lawyer saying the request amounted to a fishing expedition. Responding to the subpoena issued by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Robert Kelner, General Michael Flynn’s attorney, cited the“escalating public frenzy against him,” the appointment of a special counsel in the probe of alleged Russian meddling
in the 2016 US presidential election, and the sheer scope of the committee’s request. Led by Senators Richard Burr (R-North Carolina) and Mark Warner (D-Virginia), the committee had demanded Flynn produce detailed information about any meetings he may have had with “any Russian official or representative of Russian business interests.” They are also seeking details on communications the Trump campaign may have had “in any way related to Russia,” between June 16, 2015 – the day Donald Trump announced he was running for president –
and January 20, 2017, when Trump was inaugurated. The Fifth Amendment to the US Constitution says that no person “shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself,” something the committee’s request would effectively make Flynn do, Kelner wrote. “The subpoena seeks to compel General Flynn to offer testimony through the act of producing documents that may or may not exist,” argued Kelner of Covington & Burling. He added that it’s at odds with several established legal precedents against selfincrimination. Two of Trump’s
former associates, Roger Stone and campaign manager Paul Manafort, submitted documents requested by the committee on Monday, NBC News reported citing congressional sources. Flynn resigned as Trump’s national security adviser on February 13, after reportedly “misleading” Vice President Mike Pence about the content of his conversations with Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak. Sally Yates, who was
acting Attorney General at the time, told the committee earlier this month that she had warned the White House about discrepancies in Flynn’s accounts, but denied that she had leaked the information to the Washington Post or anyone in the media. Days after that meeting, Yates was fired for refusing to enforce Trump’s executive order imposing a travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries.

First ever Jansen Cup to tee off at Desert Willow Golf Resort KMIR News Staff FootGolf. It’s exactly as it sounds. The combination of soccer and golf, on a golf course. Although it may sound new to you, the sport is nothing new to Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, as it is home to the American FootGolf League. “Desert Willow brought in FootGolf a couple of years ago and they just thought it was a great fit,” explained Laura Balestrini, President of American FootGolf League. “They actually reached out to us and asked if we wanted to have more of a working partnership. We started the discussion and of course how could you say no when you’ve got this.” And now the resort will be home to FootGolf’s first Jansen Cup. Like the Ryder Cup of golf, twenty-four top players from Great Britain and the United States will compete.
“This is our inaugural year so it’s our first edition of it.” Balestrini said. “Michael Jansen is the creator of FootGolf so we decided to call it the Jansen cup.” One of Desert Willow’s own helped bring the sport to the resort. “I think that there’s also room for some soccer players on the golf course and this is a great new sport,” explained Darrell Souza, Director of Golf at Desert Willow. “It’s challenging, brings new people to golf courses and the game of golf, it’s really exciting.” If you can’t go catch some of the Jansen Cup, you can try the sport another day at the resort. “We see families and kids coming out to play all the time,” said Jason Wilkinson, Tournament Director at Desert Willow. “The tee sheet opens up after 3pm and we let them
go out to the Mountain View course and have at it.” Regardless if you can make the tournament, history will be made. “I think forty years from now people are going to look
back on this tournament and say wow that was the beginning of the Jansen Cup,” explained Balestrini. “And now it’s a tradition that’s been going on for forty years, so I think it gave the sport a real foundation

KMIR News Staff BIG SUR, Calif. - A massive landslide along an iconic coastal highway in California has buried the road under a 40-foot layer of rock and dirt, the latest hit after a winter of crippling slides and flooding. A swath of the hillside gave way in an area called Mud Creek on Saturday night, changing the Big Sur coastline below to include what now looks like a rounded skirt hem, Susana
Cruz, a spokeswoman with the California Department of Transportation, said Tuesday. More than 1 million tons of rock and dirt tumbled down the slope, which remained unstable. The slide is covering up about one-quarter of a mile of Highway 1. “We haven’t been able to go up there and assess. It’s still moving,” Cruz said. “We have geologists and engineers who are going to check it
out this week to see how do we pick up the pieces.” The state already had closed that part of Highway 1 to repair buckled pavement and remove debris after an earlier slide triggered by one of California’s rainiest winters in decades. Authorities removed work crews from the area last week after realizing that saturated soil in that area was increasingly unstable, Cruz said. Narrow, windy Highway 1

Imperial valleys. Perez was termed out of office. Before his election to the Assembly, he was a member of the Coachella Valley Unified School District. Perez challenged Benoit for the Fourth District seat in 2014 but lost by a wide margin. If he chooses to seek election to the seat, the new supervisor will have to run in the June 2018 primary. Because Riverside County is not a charter county, any time a supervisor dies, resigns or otherwise vacates a seat, it falls on the governor to appoint someone to fill it. Prior to this appointment, Brown appointed Chuck Washington to fill the Third District seat left open by the election of then-Supervisor Jeff Stone to the state Senate. Washington won election in his own right last year.Benoit died at his Bermuda Dunes home after declining rapidly in his battle with pancreatic cancer. In addition to his seven-year service as a supervisor, he was an assemblyman and state senator. He went into politics after a 30-year career with the California Highway Patrol. Supervisor Marion Ashley served as steward of the Fourth District from the time of Benoit’s passing to the appointment of Perez.

INP1700260 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both of RICK FREELS aka RICKY FREELS. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by JACOB FREELS in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that JENNIFER HAAS be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: June 7, 2017 at 8:45AM in Dept. 1A located at 46-200 Oasis Street, Indio, CA 92201. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. Waste to Energy Proposal
By KMIR Kitty Alvarado Cathedral City, CA According to the United Nations Environmental group, organic waste is the second highest kind of trash filling up our landfills. But Alibaba Farzaneh from Cathedral City says he wants to turn that trash into something we use everyday, energy, “Everything that comes out from the food and trees and vegetables will be turned into money.” He says he already bought
one machine that converts that matter into natural gas or energy and will present that idea to the Cathedral City Council. He wants to show them how it works and then build several large machines in the valley and turn that trash into treasure, “The idea is after sorting out all the waste from the food, grass, trees should not be going to landfills it should be going to this machine and from the other side you should get electricity or gas, natural gas.”
city takes pride in being green and not only did they lead the way in water conservation, but they’re installing more solar panels at city hall, when they’re done 75 percent of their energy will come from the sun. Milos says that’s why they’re open being based out of their city, “This really goes with along kind of the theme of our general plan when it comes to sustainability, it’s just another possibility when it comes that we’re interested in looking in,” but he added the plan would be years away if they do accept it. Cameron Craves works in the solar energy industry, he says ideas like these can play a big role in saving the environment, “If you listen to some of the skeptics, you know they say we don’t He says 50 tons of waste have that much time left on produces enough energy the planet, but if we make to power 1000 homes and changes now, it’s important, there’s another benefit to it’s important for the long processing this waste in our term health of our planet valley, “Leftover food cannot and our resources.” be recycled there, they hall A state law says that it all the way back to San California’s goal is to compost Bernardino ... by having or recycle 75 percent of solid this machine in Coachella food waste by 2020 and Valley, we will eliminate all by 2030 half of the state’s the traffic taking trash to San energy must come from Bernardino, we will also keep renewable energy, so this plan everything here business.” Cathedral City’s community could also meet the state’s green plan. SD Oncologists Test Genetic Approach to Treating Cancer
By Desert Star Staff SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Cancer treatment for some patients could lie within their DNA. Sanford Health locations in the Dakotas are participating in a clinical trial known as the “Targeted Agent and Profiling Utilization Registry,” or TAPUR study. Dr. Steven Powell, a medical oncologist and principal investigator at Sanford, called the treatment “precision cancer therapy”. He said cancer types often are grouped together - such as lung cancer. But no two lung cancers are alike; they actually differ at the genetic level. So, Powell explained, researchers have inverted the process for treatment. “We’ve learned that you may be able to treat one type of cancer entirely different than another type of cancer,” Powell said. “And this study is actually building upon that and saying, ‘Let’s look at the molecular level. Let’s look at the genes that are mutated and try to pick drugs that are going to match
A person’s genetic profile could hold the key for precision cancer treatment. (Andy Leppard/Flickr) up with those gene mutations,’ and focus on that rather than the specific cancer itself.” Powell said Sanford is looking for participants for the study, especially people for whom standard treatment hasn’t worked. He added they will soon start clinical studies on adolescent cancer patients as well.
To enroll, people can call 1-87-SURVIVAL. Powell is running the trial at the Sioux Falls-area Sanford Health location. The trial begins with a genetic profile of the participant. Then, researchers identify the mutation that is most likely causing the cancer. Most cancers are caused by

damage to DNA, such as from sun or radiation; although Powell said some people are born with mutations that will eventually cause cancer. He said genetic testing has provided an effective new avenue for cancer treatment. “When anybody has a cancer that’s been determined incurable, I think it’s really important to think about genetic testing on that tumor - because it can potentially open up doors to treatment,” Powell said. “And hopefully the more people that get tested, we can identify more of these gene mutations that we can intervene on, and hopefully we can improve our treatments for cancer.” Seven pharmaceutical companies have volunteered to provide medications for the trial.

Roger Moore had prouder achievements than playing James Bond
(AP Photo/ File). FILE - This is a July 8, 1968 file photo of British actor Roger Moore as he poses with Spain’s most prized award, the Don Quixote Award, which was presented to him at the Spanish Embassy in London By Desert Star Staff LONDON - Sir Roger Moore saw more to life than a well-mixed martini. “I felt small, insignificant and rather ashamed that I had traveled so much making films and ignored what was going on around me,” he would say years after starring in seven James Bond movies and upon accepting a role that his friend Audrey Hepburn inspired him to take on, goodwill ambassador for UNICEF. Moore, who died Tuesday at age 89, didn’t seem to take Bond that seriously even while playing him. Burdened with following Sean Connery as Agent 007, Moore kept it light, using a wry, amused tone and perpetually arched eyebrow as if he had landed on the set by accident. Connery embodied for millions the role of Bond as the suave drinker, womanizer and disposer of evil. Moore didn’t so much inhabit the character as look upon him with disbelief. “To me, the Bond situations are so ridiculous, so outrageous,” he once said. “I mean, this man is supposed to be a spy and yet, everybody knows he’s a spy. Every bartender in the world offers him martinis that are shaken, not stirred. What kind of serious spy is recognized everywhere he goes? It’s outrageous. So you have to treat the humor outrageously as well.” The handsome, darkhaired actor had long, full lives before and after his debut as Bond, in 1973. He was remembered warmly by fans of the popular U.S. 1950s-60s TV series “Maverick” as Beauregarde Maverick, the English cousin of the Wild West’s Maverick brothers, Bret and Bart. He also starred in the 1959 U.S. series “The Alaskans.” In England, he had a long-running TV hit with “The Saint,” playing Simon Templar, the enigmatic action hero who helps put wealthy crooks in jail while absconding with their fortunes. By the time the series, which also aired in the United www.desertstarweekly.com
States, ended in 1969, his partnership with its producers had made him a wealthy man. He succeeded even as critics scorned. His performance opposite Lana Turner in the 1956 movie “Diane” was likened by Time magazine to “a lump of English roast beef.” In the 1970s, New York Times reviewer Vincent Canby dismissed Moore’s acting abilities as having “reduced all human emotions to a series of variations on one gesture, the raising of the right eyebrow.” He was more inspired when helping others. He became the UNICEF ambassador in 1991 and five years later attended the World Congress Against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, and disclosed that he too had been a victim. “I was molested when I was a child - not seriously - but I didn’t tell my mother until I was 16, because I felt that it was something to be ashamed of,” he told The Associated Press at the time. He gave no details, but said it was important to encourage young victims not to feel guilty. “They’re being exploited. We have to tell them that,” Moore said. In 2003, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, not for his acting, but for his humanitarian work. Moore received the Dag Hammarskjold Inspiration Award for his contributions to UNICEF and was named a commander in France’s National Order of Arts and Letters in 2008, an award he said was worth “more than an Oscar.” In a statement Tuesday, UNICEF executive director Anthony Lake praised Moore as one of the “great champions for children.” “In his most famous roles as an actor, Sir Roger was the epitome of cool sophistication; but in his work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, he was a passionate - and highly persuasive - advocate for children,” Lake wrote. “He once said that it was up to all of us to give children a more peaceful future. Together
with Lady Kristina, he worked very hard to do so.” Born in London, the only child of a policeman, Moore had studied painting before enrolling in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He played a few small roles in theater and films before his mandatory army duty, then moved to Hollywood in the 1950s. He appeared opposite Elizabeth Taylor in 1954’s “The
Last Time I Saw Paris” and with Eleanor Parker in “Interrupted Melody” the following year. In 1970, he became managing director for European production for Faberge’s Brut Productions. With the company, he co-starred with Tony Curtis in “The Persuaders!” for British television and helped produce “A Touch of Class,” which won a best-actress
Oscar for Glenda Jackson. Three years later, he made his first Bond film, “Live and Let Die.” He would make six more, “The Man With the Golden Gun,” ‘’The Spy Who Loved Me,” ‘’Octopussy,” ‘’Moonraker,” ‘’For Your Eyes Only and “A View to a Kill” over the next 12 years. And while the Bond of the Ian Fleming novels that the films were based on was generally described as being in his 30s, Moore would stay with the role until he was 57. He continued to work regularly in films after handing over Bond to Timothy Dalton, but never with the same success. His post-Bond films included such forgettable efforts as “The Quest” with JeanClaude Van Damme and “Spice World” with the Spice Girls. Moore was divorced three times, from skater Doorn Van Steyn in 1953, English singer Dorothy Squires in 1969 and Italian actress Luisa Mattioli, the mother of his children Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian, in 2000. He married Swedish socialite Kristina Tholstrup in 2002. AP National Writer Hillel Italie contributed to this report from New York. Source KMIR/AP
