San Jose Shooting San Jose rail yard shooting leaves at least nine dead, California police say By Desert Star Staff A suspect is down after a mass shooting at a rail yard in San Jose, California. Police confirmed at least nine people had been killed. San Jose Police on Wednesday morning descended
on a Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail maintenance yard, stating that a shooting had taken place and that the scene was “active.” Locals were advised to “stay out of the area.” The Santa Clara County
Sheriff’s Office said shortly afterward that the shooter was “down,” and the VTA declared the suspect “deceased.” Speaking to reporters later, sheriff’s office spokesman Russell Davis confirmed “there are nine victims that are
pronounced deceased at this point. And there is one suspect that’s pronounced deceased.” He also confirmed that the male shooter was a VTA employee and that other employees are dead. Video footage from the scene shows a heavy police presence. The rail facility where
the shooting took place is situated on the same street block as the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and a five-minute drive from San Jose International Airport. Homicides are up this year by 75 percent in San Jose. In addition, violent crimes have risen by 17 percent since last year.
Senior Centers Talk Reopening and Regulations
By Nico Payne As California gears up to reopen in mid-June, senior centers across the Coachella Valley are also making preparations to welcome members back. Some even plan on reopening before June 15th, and when they do, many precautions will be in place. “A lot of them are so happy that we are going to be able to be inside again, and we are going to be able to have that cup of coffee and cookie, you know. And be able to chit chat for a little, so everybody is excited,” said Thommy Kocan, Food Bank Coordinator for Cathedral City Senior Center. The Cathedral City Senior Center and Mizell Center in
Palm Springs will be opening their doors on June 15th, lining with the state reopening date. And depending on which senior center you visit, proof of vaccination may or may not be required. “We’re going to have temperature checks at the door, and we will have reduced class sizes to accommodate social distancing. Folks who are vaccinated and can bring proof of their vaccination cars won’t have to wear their masks. Still, otherwise, we’ll encourage everybody to wear a mask even if they have been vaccinated and would just prefer to have a mask on,” Rebecca Ruffing, Associate Director with Cathedral City Senior Center. The Joslyn Center in Palm
How to Help Manage Pet Separation Anxiety By Desert Star Staff For more than a year, working from home and keeping social circles small due to COVID-19 has meant people have been able to spend more time with their pets. However, as more Americans are vaccinated and restrictions loosen across the country, it’s likely many are spending less time at home with their pets. As a result, pet parents should be prepared to spot the signs of separation anxiety and help their pets manage. When left at home alone, pets can exhibit behaviors that could indicate they’re experiencing separation anxiety. It’s not a new problem, but it can become more pronounced as pet parents begin to spend less time at home, whether they’re returning to work fulltime or just leaving the house more often. It may be especially challenging for pets that found their forever homes during the pandemic, as being alone may be a stark contrast to what they’ve become accustomed to. In these cases, pets may struggle to learn how to cope with being by themselves. To help pet parents identify separation anxiety in their pets and embrace alone time, consider these tips from Dr. Crista Coppola, PetSmart’s consulting animal behaviorist and separation anxiety expert. How to Identify Separation Anxiety: Changes in behavior
are some of the most common indicators of separation anxiety. These behaviors are coping mechanisms and can include excessive barking or whining, destruction near exit points or windows, having accidents around the house, hyper salivating, pacing, decreased appetite and depression. To better understand what your pet is experiencing, consider setting up a video camera when you leave to see how he or she behaves when you’re not there. Ways to Prepare Your Pet for Separation: Unpredictability has been shown to add stress for many animals, including dogs, Coppola said. Routines, however, can help many pets cope with stressful situations. Because a vacation or long weekend getaway involves a change in your pet’s routine, these seemingly small changes can make him or her susceptible to separation anxiety. If you know change is coming, slowly introduce your pet to the idea of being alone beforehand to help your four-legged friend prepare. Start by taking short trips outside your home without your pet – even if just for a few minutes – and consider leaving treats or toys to help make the alone time more enjoyable. When you are ready to leave the house, set up a cozy, inviting space for your pet, where he or she can’t
destroy items or get hurt trying to escape. Consider a non-carpeted area in case of accidents or install a doggie door to allow for going outside when necessary. Prior to any period of alone time, mentally and physically engaging your pet by going for a walk or run, or working on quick trick training, can make it more likely he or she spends at least some of the time you’re gone resting. While you’re gone, Coppola recommends providing your pets with enrichment activities such as puzzles, chews and calming aids like the Adaptil Calm Onthe-Go Dog Collar. Calming vests like the veterinarianrecommended Thundershirt can also help pets transition.
half-day sessions – including themed playdates – your furry friend will receive expert care, exercise, mentally stimulating playtime and socialization with other pups.

Solutions for Coping with Anxiety: If your pet is excessively barking or exhibiting destructive behaviors, never punish him or her and avoid expressing disappointment or frustration, Coppola said. It is understandable to feel this way, but it can upset your pet further and add to the stress he or she may already be feeling. Instead, spend time having fun together when you are home and consider an option like PetSmart’s Doggie Day Camp, which can help ease the transition by gradually introducing your pet to the amount of time left alone. Restoring Coral Reefs Around the World
By Desert Star Staff If the world does nothing, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, scientists estimate 90% of the world’s tropical reefs will be gone by 2043, impacting nearly 500 million people who depend on them for food, income and coastal protection. However, there are groups working to restore coral reefs around the globe. For example,

the SHEBA® brand started work on the world’s largest coral restoration program, which aims to restore more than 185,000 square meters of coral reefs around the world by 2029. Hope Reef, the beginning of this program, has been unveiled off the coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia, and was built to spell out the word “H-O-P-E” on the seabed using restored coral to show the power of positive
change and spark action. Since the start of the project two years ago, coral cover increased from 5% to 55%, fish abundance increased and species such as sharks and turtles have returned. Businesses Can Give Back Meaningfully Without Big Bucks By David Radlo The COVID-19 pandemic curtailed some businesses’ ability to contribute to charitable causes. Moreover, the crisis affected the bottom lines of U.S. small businesses, in particular, many of them on a modest budget, to begin with, preventing some of them from being philanthropic or as giving as they would like. But there are ways to give back to the community and help those in need without breaking the bank. Those efforts are significant at a challenging time in our history, says David Radlo (www. davidradlo.com), best-selling author of Principles of Cartel Disruption: Accelerate and Maximize Performance and

an internationally recognized expert in leadership, growth and innovation. “As a leader or team member, it’s great to give back in a proactive, meaningful way to improve the world,” he says. “It combines the ideal use of people, process, and strategy towards transforming sustainably for a new and better world.” “You can help make the world a better place by first examining how you can contribute based on your skillset. You don’t have to dish out millions to be of service. You have skills and other resources that people need. The key is having leadership and management walk the talk by making it a priority and part of the culture to give back with time, talents, and contacts in a systematic way.” Radlo suggests ways companies can give back in impactful ways that don’t involve money: • Offer pro bono services or discounted products. One way for employees or business leaders can lift the disadvantaged is to offer their expertise or services at no charge or provide products at a discount. “Whether they donate time to mentor, teach new job skills, or provide free services, they are helping people who otherwise might not have gotten the assistance they need,” Radlo says. “That’s making a real impact on people.”
• Hold volunteer days. “A company that truly wants to make giving back part of their DNA and their brand recognition needs to devote company time to those causes,” Radlo says. “Consistency reveals sincerity to the public. An entire company or large representation of it showing up to help a community cause has a lasting impact, as long as it’s not a one-off.” Radlo also thinks it’s a positive for the work culture if the company offers employees paid time off for volunteerism. “If you’re going to present giving back as a highlyvalued part of your business,” Radlo says, “then you need to show how important it is to everyone employed by you.” • Organize office drives.
An effective way to give back without giving up many hours on the job is generating an employee-run drive to collect food and clothes donations. “You need good organizational skills to plan and implement the steps to make it happen,” Radlo says. “You build a team in which you have people sorting donations, getting the word out on social media and making the distributions. Small businesses build tight bonds with the communities they serve, and communityfocused drives strengthen those connections.” • Share your network of contacts. Radlo says a successful professional’s wellconstructed network can be a treasure trove for meeting others’ needs – by putting
them in touch with your key contacts. “Most people view networking as a means toward their own personal gain – ways to increase their contacts and opportunities for career growth,” Radlo says. “But it offers a short pipeline to solutions to a variety of needs. You know people with different specialties, and you can be the facilitator, bringing a struggling person or group together with your contacts and making a difference.” “Giving back in time, talents, and contacts is crucial to transform the world sustainably,” Radlo says. “There are many areas where you can make a difference, so get in the game.”

Desert will not require proof of vaccination and will be opening a bit earlier on June 7th. Although a reopening celebration is planned for June 2nd, where health resources will be on hand, members are being asked to make reservations as operations will be limited. “We determined not to require proof of vaccination but to wear the masks, temperature checks. We are only utilizing three of our largest rooms, and there will be capacity restrictions, and this is based on the discussion we’ve had with the county department of health because we are dealing with a very vulnerable population,” said Jack Newby, Executive Director of Joslyn Center. And after being closed for over 14 months, senior centers in the Coachella
Valley described what they missed the most and what they feel their members are looking forward to the most. “We know that seniors, older adults, and probably even younger adults like you have been isolated a lot during this May 28, 2021
pandemic, and so for senior and older adults especially, that can have profound impacts on their health,” explained Newby. “Not being able to be close and intimate friendshipwise, that’s been very hard, and if it’s been that hard on
me, I can’t imagine what it’s like for a senior person who is facing senior isolation. I can’t imagine what that must be like, and I’m so excited we can come back,” added Newby. Source: NBC Palm Springs

Summer travel to approach the pre-pandemic level
By Desert Star Staff Ontario, California – Passenger volume at Ontario International Airport (ONT) will approach pre-pandemic levels during the summer
travel months. Airport officials forecast as more than 1.4 million air travelers are expected to arrive and depart at the Southern California aviation gateway.
From the start of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, ONT officials expect approximately 1,453,000 passengers, based on analysis of current airline schedules
and load factor trends. The figure is 87.7% of the total number of passengers (1,657,185) who arrived and departed ONT pre-pandemic during the comparable period in 2019. The Summer 2021 travel period begins Friday, May 28, and ends Monday, September 6. “The Inland Empire’s strong economy and rapidly growing population have combined to put ONT at the forefront of airline recovery plans in Southern California,” said Mark Thorpe, chief executive officer of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA). “We look forward to a near-normal summer travel season and welcoming many travelers we haven’t had the pleasure of serving in more than a year.” Airlines are offering nonstop service to 25 destinations this summer,
with six new destinations -- Charlotte, Chicago (O’Hare International Airport), Honolulu, Houston (William P. Hobby Airport), Mexico City and San Salvador. Service to San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador, is the first from the Inland Empire to Central America. The ten airlines serving ONT have scheduled 66 departing flights per day on average from May 28 through September 6, with more than 1.8 million seats available. By August, the number of daily departures will have increased to 74. ONT forecasts more than 75% of the seats will be occupied. Air travelers, greeters and other ONT visitors are reminded that face coverings are required in the airport and on board aircraft.

faces the threat of a pandemic,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the UN agency’s annual assembly of health ministers from its 194 member states on Monday. “It’s an evolutionary certainty that there will be another virus with the potential to be more transmittable and more deadly than this one.” On a more positive note, Ghebreyesus said the global number of Covid-19 cases and deaths reported has been decreasing for three consecutive weeks. But the WHO chief stressed that the world remains “in a fragile situation” and cautioned against any nation assuming it is “out of the woods, no matter its [Covid] vaccination rate.” He also reiterated his previous calls for governments to donate Covid-19 inoculation doses to the COVAX
vaccine-sharing facility backed by the WHO and the Gavi vaccine alliance. So far, the global rollout of Covid jabs has seen more than 75% of all doses administered in just ten countries, according to WHO data. Ghebreyesus said such “scandalous inequity” is “perpetuating” the pandemic. He has previously referred to the situation as “vaccine apartheid.” The efficacy of the world’s current crop of Covid-19 vaccines does not appear to be undermined by emerging variants of the virus, such as the strain first detected in India, Ghebreyesus said. But he did warn variants are “changing constantly” and that any future strains could “render our tools ineffective and drag us back to square one.” www.desertstarweekly.com
Sponsor local high school student Irann Nayely Orosco
By Desert Star Staff My name is Irann Nayely Orosco, and I am a junior in high school. Earlier this year, I went to Orlando, Florida, to compete for the National Championship in Mixed Martial Arts. I emerged from that event ranked second best in the United States in my weight division. And with this ranking, I qualified for the World Championship and have been invited to represent the United States in Sofia, Bulgaria, between
July 30 and August 1, 2021. Mixed Martial Arts has had an incredible impact on my life. As I began to enter my teen years, I really struggled to find myself and find my place in the world. I was bullied in a way that truly wounded me. Because of this experience, I have developed more compassion for others and treat everyone with the respect that I would want from them. After a lot of thought and prayer, my mother encouraged
me to try martial arts to keep me busy and hope for a positive outcome. I was so excited by that idea! However, it was only after I had started my training and had a positive outcome that my parents found out from a psychologist friend of the family that he always recommended martial arts for struggling teens to help them learn self-esteem, self-respect, self-confidence, self-discipline, self-control and develop the ability to follow instructions as well as work and
train with others in a respectful manner. It turned out that MMA was exactly what I needed! I discovered a real passion for Mixed Martial Arts: it’s what I want to get up and do for the rest of my life. I learned that if I really apply myself, I can succeed at anything. And I have applied myself: my sensei at Kihon MMA awarded me with the title, “Most Improved StandUp Martial Artist of the Year.” I still have a lot to learn, but it is amazing how far I’ve come
in the last year. I have been training hard every day, both in my art and as a young woman. I, therefore, ask you to please consider sponsoring me so that I can proudly represent the United States of America in Sofia, Bulgaria, this summer. I’d really appreciate your help; please donate to my GoFundMe site https:// gofund.me/73da7409. If you have any questions, please call or text my mother, Gabriela F. Felt, at 707-720-8326.

Bill to Remove All Lead Pipes Gets Renewed Attention in Congress
In addition to tens of thousands of lead water service lines, Minnesota officials estimate 675,000 homes still have lead in plumbing or fixtures. (Adobe Stock) By Mike Moen/PNS A bill that has resurfaced in Congress aims to give all states the ability to replace these lines. Tuesday, a U.S. House committee hears testimony on what is sometimes known as the “ Get the Lead Out Act,” which was reintroduced this month. The bipartisan measure establishes a 10year deadline to replace toxic lead pipes and provides $46 billion to help states and utilities reach that goal. John Rumpler, clean water program director at Environment America, said it’s an issue that crosses many ZIP Codes around the country. “It knows no partisan boundaries, you know -
urban, rural, suburban,” said Rumpler. “These lead pipes are everywhere.” A 2019 study released by the Minnesota Health Department estimated the state still has 100,000 lead service lines. Rumpler said polls indicate broad public support to take on the problem and thinks the bill would complement similar efforts proposed by the Biden administration. He acknowledged it might be more challenging for some areas to meet the deadline but suggests waivers could be granted. In Wisconsin, Rumpler said Madison is an example of a U.S. city already making strides. Not taking
aggressive action, he said, would be a disservice to kids who experience the adverse health effects of lead exposure in drinking water. “It would just be criminal neglect of our children’s health for us to be sitting here ten years from now, with millions of lead pipes still in the ground,” said Rumpler. Research has shown even low-level exposure to lead can affect a child’s brain development. The Minnesota report estimates it could cost as much as $4 billion to remove lead from drinking water but says the benefits associated with the improvements are worth double that amount.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. VW Won’t Bite On $9.2B Offer for Lamborghini
By Desert Star Staff British outlet Autocar reported Tuesday that Volkswagen received a $9.2 billion bid for Lamborghini from Zurich-based holding company Quantum Group AG. Within hours of the report, VW made its position clear: “Lamborghini is not for sale.” Quantum Group AG recently formed a consortium with Londonbased firm Centricus Asset Management and saw the Lamborghini brand, including its motorsports division, as a centerpiece for the “technology and lifestyle investment platform” that the two companies are building together. • Lamborghini, which VW owns through its Audi subsidiary, has come up before as a possible
divestment opportunity. • VW is also the parent company to Porsche, Bugatti, Bentley, Ducati, and several other automakers. All signs indicate that Lamborghini is committed to a competitive future. Last week, it announced that it’s spending $1.8 billion to develop plug-in hybrids of all its current models and produce fully electric cars by the second half of the 2020s. It’s not immediately clear how the electric transition will affect its motorsports operations, including the GT World Challenge and the Lamborghini Super Trofeo series. Some of VW’s other brands have already made the jump on the racing front. Porsche entered the allelectric Formula E series in
2019, and Audi has been a participant since the first season kicked off in 2014.
VW reported $4.1 billion in Q1 2021 revenue earlier in May — a significant
increase from the $633 million it recorded during the same quarter last year.

The arena, which will be built using private financing, is expected to be completed by the end of next year, the company said. Approximately 1,400 temporary jobs will be created during construction.
