‘American Idol’ Chris Daughtry

Chris Daughtry. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Show at the Agua Caliente Resort Spa started off the Memorial Weekend with a performance by former American Idol Alum, Chris Daughtry and his band, DAUGHTRY. The concert was held on the Friday before Memorial Day May 25th. Daughtry showed his rocker style by walking back and forth across the stage while belting out a song. Fans showed their appreciation for his music by yelling and

clapping after each song. Daughtry was a fan favorite on American Idol, but the show never crowns a rock artist. Daughtry was on American Idol in 2006 and has made his mark in the music world with Albums, tours and hit singles. He is one of the few Idols that had made it big even when he did not win. He has his style and during his performances. He is handsome with his bald head and a scruffy beard. He has been performing since he was 16 years old. I went to his

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Air Museum held its 21st Memorial Day Flower Drop and Air Fair on Monday, May 28th. Thousands of people attend this event on Memorial Day, and many hope to get one of the Red and White Carnations that are dropped in honor of the service men and women we have lost in the many wars. Adults bring their young children so they can realize what this day means. The event is a fun day for the whole family. There were food vendors with sandwiches, burgers, tacos and more. There were also vendors for refreshing drinks and frozen

foods to keep everyone calm. It was another scorching day, but no one seemed to mind the heat as there are several hangars to stay cool and check out all the old planes from yesteryear. Guests were treated to music by the Heatwave Jazz Band with local teens play instruments and sing. They got a standing ovation for their fantastic band. Even Harpo, the Clown, was visible to honor our heroes. This day was unique as it honored two of our service men that are over one hundred years old. Mike Kovich is 102 and was a top-turret gunner

website and found he is listed as a husband, father, singer, songwriter, actor, artist and Comic book enthusiast. He also put in there, Nerd, which is not appropriate for a rocker. He has put out a new song, Backbone, which is out now. He made it to the final four before he was ousted on Idol. His career has surpassed those that were in Idol of that year. Some of his hit songs are Home; It’s Not Over, What About Now and September. Fans were singing

along with some of the songs. A very excited crowd. His style is Pop Idol, Pop Rock, and American Rock Band and he is now considered a significant part of the mainstream pop rock culture. The Show is a fantastic place for an artist with over 2,100 seats and four levels, so no one has an unobstructed view. The Show is small enough to be an intimate experience for fans and yet large enough to accommodate many people who are still close

enough to the artist to enjoy the performance. I talked to one couple in the front row who is from San Diego, fans of Chris Daughtry and were so excited to see him in person. Fans stood up and clapped when he made his entrance onto the stage. A few people were even seen dancing in the aisles to his music. Check out Hotwatercasino.com/ TheShow for a full list of upcoming events.

3 Fun, Fashionable Color Trends This Summer Whether you’re looking forward to attending a few special events or have a fun getaway planned, you’re probably wondering what key items you’ll need to add to your wardrobe for summer. The good news is that there’s no need to overhaul your entire closet. And it’s easier than ever to incorporate on-trend pieces into your outfit of the day. This season’s most coveted colors are bright hues, pretty pastels and metallic tones, according to Nichole Duck, women’s buyer for fashion-forward retailer, Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse. Here she shares

how to wear on-trend colors for any style. Metallics as Neutrals: Metallic accessories and footwear provide a versatile option for today’s fashion. Because metallics can mesh with a broad range of color palettes and design styles, they are “the new neutral.” Ideas to try: • Select a classic white t-shirt, skinny jeans and a pair of metallic slides for a comfy and casual look. • Wear a long floral dress with metallic sandals featuring rose gold or silver to make a statement. Bold and Beautiful From berets to jumpsuits,

bright hues are prevalent head to toe this season. Additionally, there’s a resurgence of ontrend apparel and accessories that have undoubtedly been inspired by somewhere over the rainbow. In fact, rainbowstriped knit tops, athletic track pants, crewneck sweaters and more are now all the rage. Ideas to try: • Pair a neutral opentoed sandal with a pleated maxi rainbow skirt. • Balance casual jeans with a pair of sexy stilettos in a favorite statement color. Vibrant red, ultra violet and electric blue shades can add a charge of energy to any outfit. Ice Cream Pastels:This

season, ready-to-wear fashion features a palette of ice cream pastel shades (think yellow sorbet, mint green and lilac hues). The possibilities to incorporate these colors into this season’s outfits are limitless. Ideas to try: • Combine a pair of pastel skinny jeans with a neutral kitten-heel for a polished look. Shades of beige, coffee and gray all work well to complement the soft colors. • Try a fun, pointytoed pump with a simple camisole and pair of jeans. “From running errands to enjoying a night on the town, this season’s color

options offer variety and versatility for everyone’s personal style,” says Duck. To complete your summer look with today’s current trends, check out fashionable retailers offering thousands of options, such as Off Broadway. With more than 80 locations coast-to-coast, they offer high fashion styles from top designer and name brands. Visit offbroadwayshoes. com to shop online and get inspiration for venturing into the summer season in style. From head to toe, just a few essential on-trend pieces are all that’s needed to give your entire wardrobe a fresh summer reboot. StatePoint

How the Tax Cut Act & Job Act Will Affect our Economy

By Janice Gough Changes in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) have recently repatriated Billions of Dollars left in overseas accounts. Companies in the S&P 500 stock index bought back $178 billion of their shares in the first quarter. Multinational firms are leaping at the chance. Flush with cash, companies are buying back stock and increasing dividends at a record pace, according to Standard & Poors. Record stock buybacks are driven in part by the change in corporate tax. buyback leaders, with Apple at the head of the pack. The re-purchased $22.8 billion of its shares in the first quarter is a record amount for any company. Companies have lots of cash to buy back shares and provide dividends to shareholders. A record $1.6 trillion sat on the books of nonfinancial companies at the end of last year. Our old system taxed the earnings of their foreign affiliates when the domestic parent company made use of them. To avoid that tax, many companies left those earnings in their subsidiaries overseas. They could reinvest them in their foreign operations or hold them in U.S. financial institutions and securities, but they couldn’t use them for dividends to their shareholders or stock buybacks. The massive decrease in corporate tax (TCJA) is the big reason the 3Trillion dollars in overseas profits will be repatriated. By imposing a one-time fee on those accumulated profits, the Tax Act has freed companies to use the money wherever they wanted, and Trump hopes it will be focused

mostly in the United States. When a company reduces the number of shares available to buy, should we see its stock rise in price? Companies are not known for their savvy when it comes to buying back shares. Buybacks should be undertaken to increase shareholder value. They are all too often made to pump or support the stock price. Sometimes, buyback activity is sparked because companies need to purchase their stock to give to executives. This is not a productive use of capital. When stocks are cheaper, companies will buy back their stock. Wall Street has always taught us to “Buy Low and Sell High,” thus this can be a long-term strategy for creating income for the company. The good news for investors is that Dividends totaled $109.2 billion in the first quarter, up from $100.9 billion in the year-ago period, thus pumping more dollars into the economy. Combined buybacks and dividends the 12 months ended March 31 could exceed $1 trillion for the first time. By slashing corporate taxes, TCJA will

boost greater after-tax profits and cash flow. Companies will use some of that cash to buy back shares. By strengthening U.S. Trade agreements, it is hoped that America will become more competitive and begin to produce more of the products we use, on our shores, thus creating more jobs. The Trump administration is hoping for long-term infrastructure spending as a result of the TCJA. The markets are waiting to see what type of “carrots” will be offered. By pumping money back into our economy, we could experience economic stability for the next few years. Companies will increase hiring to accelerate the U.S. ability to outperform the world market. Tech companies could create a new renaissance period for America, as the majority of money is being re-captured by them. This may make our lives even more dependent on technology, however, increase the period where robotics will eventually eliminate many jobs and possibly make us more dependent, in some ways. Hopefully, we will

Can They Reject My Solar?

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hi Kelly, We purchased a home needing a complete remodel and we took all of the appropriate steps with the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). We submitted additional plans to install solar. Our ARC denied our plans, indicating that they are strongly opposed to solar energy because they feel it takes away from the “tranquility” of the neighborhood. We explained that we have the right to install solar, but they indicated that if we pursue installation of solar panels our application for other remodeling will never be approved. Several other homes in the community already have solar. The board said they are opposed to any solar in the neighborhood and that our other remodeling could not be approved unless we agree to waive our legal rights to pursue solar for at least four years. They said they don’t mind litigating with community members who don’t do what they say and gave us several examples of lengthy litigation efforts with individuals in the neighborhood. Have you seen these issues before with HOA battles over solar? Sincerely, J.B., San Juan Capistrano

Dear J.B.: Your board and ARC are completely wrong, and if they keep daring people to sue, someone is going to take them up on the challenge. Your board and ARC need move past the 80’s or they are going to be spending a lot of time in courtrooms in the 2010’s! The Civil Code contains very strong legal preference and protection for homeowners who wish to install solar systems. Civil Code 714 protects the right of homeowners to install systems on their property, by declaring that CC&Rs, rules or other governing documents banning solar are unenforceable. The preference for solar was expanded still further at the beginning of 2018 with the addition of Civil Code 4746, which clarifies that even condominium owners may install solar systems on common area – subject to some important limitations and conditions.

May 30, 2018

If the solar system is to be installed upon your roof or your separate property, there is not much the association can do about it. In fact, if the HOA imposes conditions which either impact the efficiency of the system by 10% or adds more than $1,000 in cost to the system, it is considered an illegal “ban.” In condominium associations or in attached planned developments in which the HOA maintains and repairs roofs, owners should expect that if they install a solar system the association will require that they insure it, take responsibility for roof leaks, and promise to remove the system if the association needs to work on the roof. These promises are best accomplished with a “common area alteration agreement” recorded against the property. While some companies offer leasing arrangements for solar systems, homeowners

turn that into a benefit. It is really up to us as a nation to take advantage of these dynamics. We can choose to be a part of the Solution or a part of the Problem. It is only the people who can make America Great Again. This new ERA could create an era of higher spending on Socially Responsible needs, Better Education, Space Exploration and ways to decrease our 32 Trillion Dollar national debt. Our nation could be, once again, recognized as the leader in the world, of Peace and Unity. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in Palm Springs. may wish to obtain legal advice of their own. I often recommend associations not allow leased solar systems on common area roofs, since the HOA has no direct control over the leasing company which still owns the system. The demand you “waive” your right to install solar is almost certainly illegal. Tell your ARC and board to see the (sun)light and stop fighting a battle the Legislature ended years ago – or ramp up their legal defense budget because under Civil 714(g) the loser pays the winner’s legal fees. Kniffen says setting it up will cost $15 million to start, and $30 million annually thereafter – but she points to potential savings in other areas. “We believe there’ll be cost savings when we allow children to stabilize in their placements, so foster children won’t be moving from home to home as often as they are right now,” says Kniffen. “We also think that there will be fewer calls to law enforcement when families are struggling with issues, and that there will also be cost savings there.” Kniffen adds that society benefits when foster children are able to bond with their new families, concentrate on school and get a fresh start in life. Without these supports, some end up facing criminal charges over family disputes. She says once young people get arrested, it often only leads to further involvement with the justice system.

Digging Deeper to Pay for 2019 Health Insurance By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennesseans who have to purchase their own health insurance plans can expect to dig even deeper next year to pay for them. The Congressional Budget Office estimates a 31- to 54-percent premium spike. Tennessee is one of the states that didn’t opt to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act and uses the federally run health insurance exchange. The prospect of higher premiums comes after Humana stopped offering coverage in Tennessee last year, citing costs and the elimination of federal subsidies to help people pay for their policies. Eliot Fishman, senior director for health policy for

the health care advocacy group Families USA, says the Volunteer State isn’t alone in its challenges. “What Tennessee is experiencing is unfortunately, as the CBO describes, typical of many states around the country,” Fishman states. “Premiums went up significantly last year, and are projected to go up again this coming year.” Blue Cross, Tennessee’s largest insurer, expects its premiums to remain stable next year, as the company says it already planned for some of the latest changes to the Affordable Care Act. In its report, the CBO attributes the big premium hikes to the elimination of federal subsidies for low and middle-income people, and uncertainties about

the future of the ACA. Fishman says it’s important to consider the source and objectiveness of the CBO. He notes the agency says the premium hikes are the result of changes made under the Trump administration. “The CBO is really the most authoritative voice on these questions, and it reports ultimately to Congress,” he states. “It has a Republican-appointed director, and is really an unimpeachable and objective source on that question.” A majority of the 229,000 people covered through the Health Exchange in Tennessee receive a subsidy to help offset their premium costs, which also increases the overall cost to the federal government.

Health insurance premiums in Tennessee will increase by at least one-third for many people next year, according to the Congressional Budget Office. (Lira_n4/Twenty20)

Medicaid Expansion Supporters Gear Up for Summer Push By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho – A campaign to pass Medicaid expansion in Idaho at the ballot box is preparing itself for a summer push. The ballot measure has hit the threshold for signatures, but supporters are still waiting to hear if they received enough signatures in at least half the state’s legislative districts. If the measure does qualify, its biggest asset could be the grassroots network that sprung up to collect signatures this spring. Emily Strizich is co-chair of

Idahoans for Healthcare, a group backing the measure. “We assumed all of these dedicated volunteers were going to be exhausted and just want to kick their feet up,” she says. “But all of our volunteers have been contacting us and saying, ‘What can I do next, how can I help, what do you guys need?’ The people are so enthusiastic about getting involved in this and making a difference.” The health-care expansion would help about 62,000 Idahoans who make too much for Medicaid but too little to

qualify for federal subsidies to help them pay for insurance. Opponents want to stay out of Obamacare, saying it will be costly for the state. A coalition of groups supporting the measure includes the American Cancer Society’s Idaho Chapter, Idaho Academy of Family Physicians, and the Consortium of Idahoans with Disabilities. A poll by Idahoans for Healthcare found 66 percent of residents support expansion, including 53 percent of Republicans and 77 percent of Independents. May 30, 2018

Strizich agrees there is backing across the political spectrum. “I think there is a small minority of vocal opponents to this,” she notes. “What we have seen crisscrossing the state is overwhelming support for this idea - from Republicans, Independents, Democrats alike.” Strizich says Idahoans are ready to give a voice to the state’s uninsured. While gathering signatures, she heard from a woman who was taking care of her grandchildren and fell

into the health-care gap. When diagnosed with a serious medical condition, the woman had to decide if she would sell her house to afford medical treatment. “Here was this woman that, her whole life, had done everything right,” she adds. “She’d played by the rules of the game. And through no absolutely fault of her own, she was finding herself with this terminal diagnosis - and she fell into the gap.” The deadline for Idaho county clerks to verify signatures is June 30.

Carbon Fee Initiative Addresses Environmental Justice

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – The latest effort to curb carbon pollution in Washington state is putting communities most affected by climate change at its center. Backers of Initiative 1631 are gathering signatures to qualify it for the November ballot. It would charge $15 per ton on carbon emissions starting in 2020. Thirty-five percent of the fee would be invested in communities of color that have borne the effects of pollution. Dujie Tahat is the communications director of Front and Centered, an organization that represents communities of color fighting climate change. He notes the disproportionate effects, such as higher asthma rates for children of color, in these communities. “(Initiative) 1631 represents an opportunity to put the cost burden back onto the polluters

and holds the largest corporate polluters accountable, because our communities, you know, we’ve been paying our fair share,” he says. “And now it’s time to make it more equitable, in that sense.” Fifteen-percent of the fee would address the oversized energy burden for low-income households, 10 percent would go to Native American tribes affected by climate change, and a $50-million reserve from the fee would assist displaced fossil-fuel workers. Opponents of the measure say companies could pass the cost of the fee onto Washingtonians. Tahat says it’s important to reframe the conversations on racial justice and climate change and recognize they are interwoven issues. “If the human cost of climate change matters to you, then what people of color - what communities of color

a fee on carbon pollution have failed, including a 2016 ballot measure and 2018 legislation. Initiative 1631 is more focused on communities of color than previous attempts

and has gained the support of the Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy, the Quinault Tribe and Gov. Jay Inslee. The initiative needs about 260,000 signatures by July 6 to qualify.

Report Deems Cell Towers, Power Lines Threats to Wildlife By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON – It’s hard to imagine what life was like before cell phones and their necessary towers dotted the landscape from coast to coast. But an increasing body of research calls into question the safety of the electromagnetic radiation generated by power lines, Wi-Fi, cellular technology and broadcast transmissions – not only for people, but for wildlife. This month, a review body funded by the European Union concludes that radiation poses a potential risk to insect, bird and plant health. “The ways that the frequencies move through the air are not natural,” says Theodora Scarato, executive

6

DesertSTAR

director of Environmental Health Trust. “They are manmade, and they’re different than what we’ve had on the earth. They’re not the same as sunlight, or other electromagnetic fields that animals have been exposed to, for forever.” Scarato says scientists are even more concerned about the increased use and implementation of 5G technology, which offers greater bandwidth for data on mobile devices, but requires placement of additional and more frequent transmitters across the country. Scarato adds at least 20 nations have crafted recommendations to reduce people’s exposure to cellular

signals, citing radiation risks. Buglife is an EU-based charity that advocates for the life of insects and other invertebrates. And its chief executive, Matt Shardlow, says there is plenty of research raising concerns about the safety of communication towers, but there is little regulation. “What we’re calling for, really for the moment, is that when we’re looking at new sources of electromagnetic radiation, or introducing higher levels of electromagnetic radiation, that we also put in place proper risk assessment processes,” he states. In 2014, the U.S. Interior Department recommended to the Commerce Department May 30, 2018

that procedures be revised for who has jurisdiction over communication towers, citing the potential impact of electromagnetic radiation. Since then, efforts to study that impact or implement regulations have been halted by the Trump administration. In the meantime, Scarato says, seven other countries – including Russia and China – have enacted radiation limits.

“In the United States, we need to catch up with what’s happening in the rest of the world,” she stresses. “We’re doing it with plastics and BPA, and look at lead. I think we need to step up our game.” More than 230 scientists have signed an appeal to the United Nations asking it to take the risks posed by electromagnetic radiation more seriously.

Protests Set at Mackinac Policy Conference By Desert Star Staff MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. – People getting off the ferry to attend the Mackinac Policy Conference Tuesday will be handed lollipops by protesters – with the plea “not to be a sucker” for Enbridge, the company behind the Enbridge Line 5 oil pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac. The conference, hosted by the Detroit Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Enbridge, draws the state’s biggest names in policy and business. David Holtz, communication coordinator www.desertstarweekly.com

with the Oil and Water Don’t Mix coalition, says the 65-year-old pipeline is dangerous and should be decommissioned. “It’s had 29 different leaks and, about four or five years ago, we discovered through video that the National Wildlife Federation took in the Straits of Mackinac, that the condition of the pipeline there was something of concern,” he points out. Gov. Rick Snyder, who leaves office in January, has asked Enbridge to come up with a plan to replace the pipeline, not get rid of it.

The protestors are also calling for questions about Enbridge Line 5 to be included in the gubernatorial debate at the conference, scheduled for Thursday. Holtz says Snyder’s pro-business position gives Enbridge a shortcut and favors Big Oil over Michiganders’ health, safety and the environment. “Instead of prioritizing protecting the Great Lakes, he feels a responsibility to help the oil industry continue making money,” Holtz asserts. “I just think it’s an orientation that comes from being a May 30, 2018

former CEO, and not really having the same priorities as most people in Michigan.” The pipeline shuttles 23 million gallons of Canadian oil per day from the town of Superior, Wis., through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the Straits of Mackinac, ending at a refinery in Sarnia, Ontario. Holtz says his group believes the oil could be transferred through newer or less controversial pipeline systems.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

A revolution, revelation, idea, dream or vision, held long in your heart and mind, perhaps for years, comes more and more into form and matter, manifesting through using your creative imagination, creating visualizations. The next seven years, which seems like a long time but is really only a blink in God’s eyes, brings forth what you’ve longed for, hoped would occur, and through your persistence you will love into existence. Then, it must be shared.

TAURUS You never lose sight of your vision or of the tasks you are to perform. No matter what occurs – surprising events, losses, people, ideas and hopes falling away – you know “love underlies all happenings of the times.” That love emerges from heavenly beings and stars and angels guiding our lives. Focus now only on what’s in front of you. Know choices, plans and events made during this time will slowly move forward.

GEMINI Many thoughts, ideas, events and communications from the past return. This last month there was a need to externalize thoughts and be understood. This will continue as Mercury remains behind the scenes (in Taurus). Later, misinterpretations will turn

around, lost friends may call. Much remains obscure so you can spiritualize all actions. Write each day’s events in your Esoteric Journal.

CANCER You think about, ponder upon and consider goals for the coming months. You have expectations and ideals. Up to this point the goals and ideals of the past have served you. However, in the last several years, life has changed so radically that newer points of view are forming. This is also due to influences of health, and by friends, colleagues and family. You have been “reconstructed.”

LEO Your creative life, art, photography and writing especially, are most important now. These constitute your real vocation, as they are closest to your heart. They define the gifts through which you can best assist others. It is through beauty. Pursuing your talents improves them more and more. What studies have you put off in recent years? Subscribe to an art magazine.

VIRGO You think deeply so you can have clear perspective. Mortality (the idea and meaning of death, the reality of life after death) is something you will think about in the coming months. This is a healthy

response to the changes occurring on our planet as the Pisces Age ends. There’s an underground river of communication between you and others. It’s not verbal or externalized. Fill that river with love.

LIBRA This is a special time of connecting with other cultures and communicating with them. Share your heart with others and they, in turn, share with you. You might begin a monthly Conversation & Dinner Group, a Salon, or a Book & Dinner Club. Gathering and discussing for greater perspectives. You like and need partnerships. They accomplish more than one person alone. Discuss everything with loved ones. You need love and care. This comes from open loving communication.

SCORPIO We think we have free will. We do, to an extent. We can choose what we do each day, somewhat. We can choose how we behave, sometimes. We can think about where we live, sometimes. But there’s a greater plan over-lighting us. It’s best to be more fluid and discover what that greater reality is that hovers over, influences, surrounds and penetrates our little wills and lives. It is the Soul. Make its acquaintance.

SAGITTARIUS

Great opportunities move toward you in their own time and place. You become more and more aware of this. Listen to all communications, from yourself and others, assessing carefully intent, purpose behind everything, everyone and all events. Messages can heal, wound, uplift, destroy, create, deny or be a refuge. Refuge (sangha) is greatly needed by you and everyone at this time. You are to offer it.

CAPRICORN In your daily (successful, ambitious, up the ladder of) life, you find yourself needed in two places at once. Your mind is here, your body over there somewhere. This is the Gemini experience in the daily life of a Capricorn. You will attempt to bring a harmony and synthesis to this duality. Amidst constant changing vicissitudes and instability, you find poise, balance and harmony. And a field of bright orange flowers. This is the Soul. Call upon it each moment.

time, just be the artist and futurist you’re meant to be.

PISCES Know that everyone and everything in your environments love, care for and support you. Offer gratitude to them for being in your life at this very moment and all the future moments to come. Something’s ending. A new life will be built from the old, phoenix-like – a new community creating the foundation for newer and greater achievements. Bid the old realities adieu. They served their purposes well. You now have new promises to keep. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. AQUARIUS It’s best to be among the young, playful, innocent and childlike, romantic and creative. Then you will become these, too, discovering new outlets of art and creativity. You will see things in a newer, more golden light and your imagination will flow outward making your life filled with days of happiness and joy. Often you are toiling among life’s questions. At this

4 Ways to Make Summer Easier for Children With Autism

Holly Robinson Peete, actress and autism advocate and her son RJ. By Desert Star Staff Transitional times of the year mean shifting schedules, which can be particularly challenging for children with

8

DesertSTAR

autism and their families. Whether you’re just beginning to learn about cognitive special needs, or have many years of

experience, gaining insight into what has helped other families cope can be valuable. Holly Robinson Peete, actress and autism advocate whose son RJ was diagnosed with autism at a young age, is sharing her own tips and strategies for a smooth summer break. Discuss Plans Ahead of Time: Summer days are often filled with new experiences, which can sometimes be overwhelming for your child. Share a schedule in advance to help your child understand what the day will look like. Of course, plans -- and weather -- may change, so it’s important to provide a backup plan, too. For example, you may want to say, “We’re going to the pool today at noon, but if it rains, we’ll go to the movies instead.” Maintain a Schedule: Routines are important for all children, but especially for those living with autism. In summer, it can feel tempting to be more flexible with daily routines but maintaining the basic structure of your child’s typical school day helps. May 30, 2018

Start the day by encouraging the same wake-up time each day and following a regular morning routine. Use free resources and easy step-by-step guides to help with everyday activities, like the oral care instructions created by Colgate on the MagnusCards app. MagnusCards combine proven learning techniques with game design in order to help people with cognitive special needs master life skills. Colgate recently launched five guides on the app to help establish healthy oral care routines, from proper tooth brushing to visiting the dental office. To learn more, visit Colgate.MagnusCards.com. Do Activities Together: A family needs to work together to thrive. Opt for activities that are exciting for your child but benefit everyone. “A simple picnic on the beach is a good day for the Peetes! We’ve been doing this since RJ was a little boy,” says Peete. “The sounds of the ocean and watching the waves relax

him and the whole family.” Focus on the Positive: Children with autism respond well to praise. The key is to be specific about what exactly was great about his or her behavior and to provide a little reward, such as an ice cream cone or extra trip to the pool. “Many parents take eye contact for granted, but it’s something that can be difficult for children with autism to do. It’s very hard to describe what it’s like when your child is unable to look at you. You don’t make the connection you need to make, which can be painful and frustrating for everyone,” says Peete. “Whenever RJ would make extended eye contact, we would make sure he got his favorite pizza or the chance to jump longer on his trampoline. These are small wins, but huge for an autism family!” Don’t let summer vacation be overwhelming. Leverage new resources and learn more about others’ experiences to help your family discover winning routines for a great summer. StatePoint www.desertstarweekly.com

Clint Eastwood’s ‘The 15:17 to Paris” Now on DVD

In recent years actor, turned director, Clint Eastwood has focused his attention on American heroes like airline captain “Sully” Sullenberger (played on screen by Tom Hanks) who kept his plane from fatally crashing by successfully landing on the Hudson River. Sully’s quick thinking saved the lives of all 155 passengers on board. In his latest work, “The 15:17 to Paris” from Warner Bros., Eastwood turns his cinematic attention on three young American heroes, Oregon National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos, U.S. Air Force Airman First Class, Spencer

Stone and Anthony Sadler who play themselves in the film. Jenna Fischer and Judy Greer star as the mothers of Skarlatos and Stone. The screenplay, written by Dorothy Blyskal, is based on the book by Sadler, Skarlatos, Stone and Jeffrey E. Stern. Before the terrifying events on the train, Eastwood begins his film by introducing us to the three heroes as youngsters who first meet in middle school. While good kids they were often in trouble for arriving late or misbehaving in class. This has resulted in many visits to the principal’s office and detention. This

BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

was very stressful for their single parent mothers, Fischer and Greer especially when one teacher suggests that their children’s actions may be the result of not having a father figure in the home. We then cut to the trio in Europe as they travel throughout Italy before boarding the 15:17 train heading to Paris. It is at this point that the film takes off. Things seem reasonable as they board the train and take their seats. However, everything changes when the terrorist El Khazzani enters the 15:17 train and goes immediately into the bathroom.

When he comes out, he is armed and starts shooting. What happens next is electrifying. One man is shot as Khazzani bursts down the aisle, aiming to kill as many passengers as he can. At this point, the three Americans join together to bring the gunman down. Eastwood has also cast some of the actual passengers on the 15:17 train to play themselves. There are two unique features on the DVD and Bluray. One is entitled “Making Every Second Count.” The other is “Portrait of Courage” where Eastwood and his creative team describe what aspects of the story moved them and Eastwood explains why he cast the actual heroes to play themselves in the movie, In “Making Every Second Count” we join Spencer Stone, Alek Skarlatos, and Anthony Sadler--the three Americans who stopped the attack--as they take us moment-bymoment through the real-life drama, just as they lived it. “The 15:17 to Paris” is rated PG-13 for bloody images, some suggestive material, drug references, and language. Running time is 1 hour, 33 minutes.

The Merry Month of May: On Saturday, May 19th Prince Harry married his American sweetheart, Meghan Markle. It was a gala occasion watched around the world from start to finish, ending with the royal kiss. This was followed by the horse-drawn carriage ride to their wedding party and reception with the Royal Family, Meghan and Mom and celebrity guests. It was a real-life fairytale. And thanks to worldwide TV coverage we got to watch it, many of us getting up in the wee small hours of the morning to witness it live. This past weekend I spoke with my longtime British friend, Dorothy Penny Dunn in London. She spoke glowingly of Prince Harry’s new bride and her mother, saying that they have captured the hearts of the Brits. She also thought the sermon by the American Episcopal Bishop was “smashing, warm and lively.” And to my delight, Dorothy has promised to send me a souvenir cup commemorating the Royal wedding--just as she did years ago for the Royal wedding of Prince Charles and Diana.

FAMILY FEATURES

hether it’s the kids or grandkids wrapping up the school year, spending a little extra time with mom or traveling with loved ones for a long weekend, the potential increase in quality family time is something many look forward to in May. When everyone is gathered together, it seems at some point the conversation always turns to who’s watching what when it comes to TV shows and movies. Watching TV or going to the movies together can be a great way to bond, but people are discovering exciting series and films outside of cable channels and movie theaters. Even with busy schedules and differing tastes, streaming services like Netflix are always adding new shows and movies, so there’s sure to be something everyone can enjoy together (no matter how picky some family members may be). If you’re looking to discover something new or different from what you find on regular TV, here are five reasons to give an option like Netflix a try: 1. No More Fighting Over the Remote. Whether you’re sitting

down to watch as a family or getting cozy on the couch for a date night in, there’s no need to commandeer the remote to ensure you have control of the entertainment choices. With a large selection of shows and movies, streaming services make it easy to find something you’ll love to watch together. 2. Like a Guide Channel That’s Customized for You. If you’re a fan of Blue Bloods, you can either catch up on old episodes, or give an option like MINDHUNTER a try. Or if you’re looking for laughs and love Friends, check out Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It’s like a guide channel, but because it knows your tastes, Netflix will only display show and film recommendations based on what you have watched in the past. 3. Rediscover Shows and Movies You Love. Experience some of ABBA’s greatest hits with Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth in the musical romantic comedy Mamma Mia!, or get your action fix with Matt Damon in The Bourne Ultimatum. If you’re feeling nostalgic but are looking for something

outside of reruns, consider a trip down memory lane with a reboot of classic series like Lost in Space or Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. 4. Take Your Shows On-the-Go. If you’re doing any travel this spring, discover a new way to stay entertained while you’re on the go. Whether you’re on the road for work or leisure, Netflix lets you watch your favorite shows wherever you are. Just use your phone, laptop or tablet to access the service and pick up right where you left off. 5. Sign-Up is Simple. All you have to do is go online to Netflix.com, choose a plan and provide payment information and your zip code. You may also be eligible for a subscription as part of some existing cable packages, and if that is the case, you may not need any additional equipment to access it. Find more information about countless shows and movies, sign up for a one-month free trial and set up your account at Netflix.com.

TV SHOWS AND MOVIES ON NETFLIX IN MAY Netflix is adding new shows and movies to the service every day. MUSIC

BY ROBERT KINSLER

Icons explore roots via new collections

A wide range of talented artists are truly in their element using their roots in carving out great new recordings available now. Artist: John Mellencamp Title: Plain Spoken: From The Chicago Theatre (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, John Fogerty, Woody Guthrie Tell me more: In “Plain Spoken: From The Chicago Theatre” singer-songwriter John Mellencamp provides a deeper look into his craft via a mix of stunning musical performances and spoken word. In the digital release I reviewed, there was both a full-length concert film featuring Mellencamp and his terrific band, as well as that same concert film featuring a voice over from the artist offering a wealth of insights about the beginning of his career, his ability to observe and put those observations into song, and thoughts about the world about him. The performances range from the bluesflavored “Lawless Times” and Americana-draped “Troubled Man” to rocking takes of “Rain on the Scarecrow” and “Pink Houses.” The work of fiddler Miriam Sturm and accordion

player Troye Kinnett in particular enhances the performances. But it is the narration that will appeal to those looking for a deeper glimpse into the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. “I’ve always been interested in other people,” Mellencamp acknowledges early in the film. “And at the same time always found other people in my way.” “Plain Spoken: From The Chicago Theatre” is available on DVD+CD, Blu-ray+CD and via digital formats. Information: www.eagle-rock.com. Artist: Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite Title: No Mercy In This Land (Anti) You might like if you enjoy: Ben Harper, Charlie Musselwhite Tell me more: Five years after teaming up for their Grammy-winning masterwork “Get Up!” Ben Harper (vocals, slide guitar, piano) and Charlie Musselwhite (harmonica, vocals) have joined forces again. “No Mercy In This Land” finds the dynamic duo once again demonstrating there is plenty of new territory to explore in the blues. This is an album that explores the genre’s richest traditions even as the approach here has a contemporary energy and relevance that astounds. The

fleet “Bad Habits” finds Harper even tapping into a seemingly authentic early 20th century poetry while conjuring up the blues: “When a man gives you his hat / He’s living on borrowed time.” Musselwhite’s potent blues harmonica spices up the track, as well as the original material across the disc (just listen to “Movin’ On” later). The fiery Chicago blues “The Bottle Wins Again,” yearning ballad “When Love Is Not Enough” and country blues “Trust You To Dig My Grave” demonstrate the range of the duo’s approach. Musselwhite takes over lead vocal duties on the descriptive Delta foray “No Mercy In This Land,” a Harperpenned tale whose probing lyrics could have been penned in the 1860s or 1960s and sound just as timely in 2018. and modern-day heroes Black Country Communion. He turns on a dime for the Texas blues of “Any Day, Anytime,” here his voice equal parts Austin gale and Memphis soul. On the rockabilly-tinged “Love’n’Roll,” he dips back into the sounds of the ‘50s for a spirited romp where his pleasing vocals and guitar work are positioned amidst horns. The lovely “Can’t Get You Out Of My Mind” is a ballad that fuses jazz chords into the blues sound, while the spirit of Hendrix creeps into the psychedelic blues rocker “Til The Day I Die.” “Pull It Through” simply thrills with its power and style. Sure, Menezes’ guitar work is thrilling; but just listen because his expressive solos always come in the service of the songs themselves. Information: www.arturmenezes.com.

Artist: Artur Menezes Title: Keep Pushing (independent) You might like if you enjoy: Gary Clark Jr., Tommy Castro, Kenny Wayne Shepherd Tell me more: Armed with a powerful and soulful voice as well as top-tier talent on lead guitar, Brazil-born Artur Menezes shines across his new Josh Smith-produced album “Keep Pushing.” The 10 original songs are outstanding, and what’s more Menezes is expert at mixing up a number of styles. For example on the heavy blues-rocker “Come With Me” his approach recalls a mix of vintage Bad Company

Artist: Gene D. Plumber Title: All the Pretty Girls (Bar/None Records) You might like if you enjoy: Willie Nelson, George Jones, Merle Haggard Tell me more: There is a sense of bona fide fun while listening to Gene D. Plumber’s “All the Pretty Girls.” Not many artists release a commercial debut album at age 72, but Plumber provides aspiring recording artists and roots music fans of all stripes a joyful listen thanks to a great collection mixing up his colorful originals and reworked covers that benefit from his style. of the disc is bolstered by a farflung mix of songs. The life-long Hoboken artist surprises on the absolutely tender original “A Breeze Blows Through the Palm Tree,” an acoustic song that stirs via his vocal performance and Marc Jonson’s subliminal organ. He mines similarly affecting emotional territory on a version of the George Jones hit “I Always Get Lucky with You.” Uptempo standouts include his Cajun-flavored title track, the old time rock ‘n’ roll-styled “Let’s Make a Deal - Marriage Proposal” and a New Orleansflavored cover of the Chris Kenner & Allen Tousaint 1961 classic “I Like It Like That”. Information: bar-none.com. Artist: Curtis Salgado and Alan Hager Title: Rough Cut (Alligator Records) You might like if you enjoy: Little Walter, Kim Wilson Tell me more: Lovers of traditional blues will love the new collaboration featuring award-winning vocalist and harmonica virtuoso Curtis Salgado and guitar great Alan Hager. On the duo’s newly-released “Rough Cut” they explore the genre with a mix of potent originals and beloved covers. Among the great tracks on the set are the driving originals “So Near to Nowhere,” “One Night Only” and warmhearted acoustic track “I Want My Dog to Live Longer (The Greatest Wish).” The two artists also take on a number of well-known classics, with the buoyant Muddy Waters standard “I Can’t Be Satisfied” (featuring some sly slide work from Hager), biting Chicago blues nugget “Too Young to Die,” a wonderfully vocals-anchored “Morning Train” and dance-minded take of Elmore James’ “You Got to Move” among the essentials featured on the 13-track disc. How do you prepare for the next big storm? By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Streams and rivers will emit increasing amounts of carbon dioxide as temperatures rise from climate change, according to a new global study. New research finds that just a 1-degree Celsius rise in temperature will result in a 24 percent increase in the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from these waterways. Aquatic scientist Alba Argerich from the University of Missouri said models of our changing climate include the effects of the oceans, forests and industry, but not the massive numbers of rivers and streams across the world. “With this study now, this is confirming that, well, the trend can be even worse, right?”

Argerich said. “If we don’t take them into account, into these global climate models, we are missing an important piece of information.” Argerich said streams and rivers need oxygen and have respiration similar in a way to humans. Organisms in and on the water use and produce carbon dioxide. As temperatures go up, her research predicts more carbon dioxide will be produced. The analysis was published in the journal Nature Geoscience. Researchers also studied streams in Alaska, Australia and Puerto Rico. Argerich said she hopes this is the model of the future for studying climate change. She said funding for this type of

research is tight, especially in other countries, but a global view is needed to really understand what is going on. “I imagine that this

is the way that the future of the science has to go, right? Instead of doing our own experiments, trying to work together to have a

global picture,” she said. Argerich joined 26 other co-authors on the study.

celebrate once they get the beer open,” Camp said. He continued: “Our cops have killed over 400 people so far this year. And of the 1,100 2017 killings, officers were charged with a crime in only 13 – one percent of all killings by police! Just one percent are even charged with anything. It is basically open season on Americans by our own police forces”. He reported that over a half of all these killings began with police responding to suspected non-violent offenses or cases where no crime was reported. Besides that, in a little under half of the killings, the victim didn’t even have a gun. Most of those who were completely unarmed, and yet killed anyway, were people of color, he said. “It is not that cops don’t kill white people… they kill more white people than Wendy’s Baconator sandwich. But it’s that the white people [who] cops kill are more likely to be waving a gun around. The black people are often not,” Camp explained.

He also noted that, on average, police recruits get only eight hours of training on how to de-escalate tense situations and spend 58 hours learning “how to shoot things.” “So it sounds like shooting things is about seven times more important than trying to avoid shooting things,” he observed. If police did not kill people who were not posing a threat with a gun, there would have been 638 fewer deaths in 2017 – a 57-percent reduction. “I think it is pretty undeniable that we have a uniquely American problem in which civilians are getting massacred by police on a near-daily basis,” Camp concluded. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives passed a bill recently to impose federal penalties on people who deliberately target law enforcement officers with attacks. According to The Intercept, the bill exemplifies “the very worst sort of legislation: at once unnecessary and pernicious.”

It’s open season on Americans by US police forces’ – Lee Camp

A memorial of Saheed Vassell, killed by NYPD officers, Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York, US, April 6, 2018 © G. Ronald Lopez / Global Look Press By Desert Star Staff We have a uniquely American problem in which civilians are getting massacred by police on a near-daily basis, Lee Camp says on the latest ‘Redacted Tonight’ episode about the problem of out-ofcontrol policing in the US. Just several days ago, video emerged showing Milwaukee police Tasering

NBA player Sterling Brown for the ‘crime’ of parking in a disabled parking spot. “But he got off easy,” Camp said, given that police in the US have already killed over 400 people since the beginning of 2018. In comparison, Lee explained, in the 12 months to April 2016, British cops discharged their weapons

just seven times, with three people killed. “They had only fired their guns seven times in a year! An average American cop discharges their weapons seven times just to open their beer can. When the little metal tab breaks off, you know, you gotta get the gun out. And then they fired three more times to

‘Roseanne’ canceled after star’s racist tweets By Desert Star Staff Two months after a ratings-smashing return to television, ABC has canceled the sitcom ‘Roseanne,’ after the star Roseanne Barr fired off a racially-charged insult at a former Obama adviser. In a now-deleted tweet, Barr described Valerie Jarrett, former senior adviser to President Barack Obama, as looking like the “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby.” After the outrage that followed, ABC announced that it would cancel ‘Roseanne’. ABC President Channing Dungey

said that Barr’s statement was “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.” Barr’s tweet immediately drew a tidal wave of disgusted reactions and accusations of racism. For the foul-mouthed conservative comedienne, the apology did little to control the damage. Just an hour later, African-American comedy writer Wanda Sykes said that she would be resigning as producer on Roseanne’s show. Barr regularly takes to Twitter to vent at liberals and shout her own conservative opinions. On Tuesday, she

also targeted Hillary Clinton, who was recently seen at a Memorial Day parade in a bulky coat and scarf that may have concealed a back brace. “Its a colostomy jug cuz full of sh**e,” Barr professed. Jarrett, who is AfricanAmerican, was born in Iran to American parents. During her time in the Obama White House, she was plagued by unfounded rumors that she was secretly working to make America an Islamic nation. This is not the first time Barr has been accused of racism. In 2013 she called Susan Rice, another African-American and Obama’s national security advisor at the time, “a man with big swinging ape b**ls.”

prices,” Mr. Coe noted. Lightbox will launch in the US and will initially be available to US-based consumers through the

Lightbox e-commerce website, with retail partnerships to be announced in due course. A subsidiary of De Beers Group, Lightbox will be the only jewelry brand to source lab-grown diamonds from De Beers Group’s Element Six business, a world leader in lab-grown diamond technology for more than 50 years. Any Lightbox lab-grown diamonds of 0.2 carats or above will carry a permanent Lightbox logo inside the stone. Invisible to the naked eye but easily identified under magnification, the logo will clearly identify

the stone as lab-grown and also serve as a mark of quality and assurance that it was produced by Element Six. To support Lightbox, De Beers Group is investing a total of US$94 million over four years in a new Element Six production facility near Portland, Oregon, adding to Element Six’s existing UKbased facilities. Once fully operational, the plant will be capable of producing upwards of 500,000 rough carats of lab-grown diamonds a year. For more information, visit www.lightboxjewelry.com.

De Beers Group to Launch New Fashion Jewelry Brand

By Desert Star Staff LONDON, --De Beers Group today announced the launch of a new company called Lightbox Jewelry that will begin marketing a new brand of laboratory-grown diamond jewelry under the Lightbox name in September, offering consumers highquality, fashion jewelry designs at lower prices than existing lab-grown diamond offerings. Lightbox lab-grown diamonds will retail from US$200 for a quarter-carat stone to US$800 for a onecarat stone. The line will bring something new and innovative to the jewelry sector, featuring pink, blue and white lab-grown diamonds in a selection of accessibly-priced earring and necklace designs. “Lightbox will transform the lab-grown diamond sector by offering consumers a labgrown product they have told us they want but aren’t getting: affordable fashion jewelry that may not be forever, but is perfect for right now,” said Bruce Cleaver, CEO, De Beers Group. “Our extensive research tells us this is how consumers regard lab-grown diamonds – as a fun, pretty product that shouldn’t cost that much – so we see an opportunity here that’s been missed by labgrown diamond producers. Lab-grown diamonds are a product of technology, and as we’ve seen with synthetic

sapphires, rubies and emeralds, as the technology advances, products become more affordable. After decades of R&D investment, we’re able to offer consumers a better price today. While it will be a small business compared with our core diamond business, we think the Lightbox brand will resonate with consumers and provide a new, complementary commercial opportunity for De Beers Group.” “Lightbox Jewelry offers consumers something new: sparkle and colors, at a very accessible price. In addition to a deep understanding of what consumers want, Lightbox brings innovation and a commitment to transparency to the lab-grown diamond sector,” added Steve Coe, General Manager, Lightbox Jewelry. “We’ve learned from our research that there is a lot of confusion about labgrown diamonds – what they are, how they differ from diamonds, and how they are valued. Lightbox will be clear with consumers about what lab-grown diamonds are and will offer straightforward pricing that is consistent with the true cost of production. “We will introduce more designs and colors as the range evolves, and the technological efficiency of our proprietary production process means we will always offer Lightbox at accessible

PITCH YOUR SMALL BUSINESS LIKE A PRO

E

FAMILY FEATURES

ntrepreneurship is alive and well, even if the face of small business is evolving with the times. Autonomy in management and making dreams a reality are the reasons most cited by entrepreneurs looking to open a small business. Nearly half of all respondents in the annual The UPS Store “Inside Small Business Survey” said they’d be optimistic about opening a small business this year. Of respondents who hope to open a small business, top motivators include being their own bosses (38 percent), followed by believing in the power of their own ideas (17 percent) and creating their next career paths (15 percent). “The American Dream of owning your own business is still very much real, especially when compared to the rest of the developed world,” said Dr. Luke Pittaway, Ohio University College of Business Copeland Professor of Entrepreneurship. However, how Americans are choosing to open small businesses is where there may be a shift. “Consumer habits are changing,” Pittaway said. “That’s forcing Americans to consider how they open small businesses, whether it's focusing more on e-commerce than actual store fronts or focusing on selling to a local community or region instead of a broader national audience.”

Starting Your Own Start-Up

The process of launching a start-up can throw various unexpected obstacles your way, but

there are numerous resources available to support a budding business. “We understand the challenges of small business owners and offer products and services designed specifically to help and support small businesses,” said Tim Davis, president of The UPS Store, Inc. “Small business owners are unparalleled in their passion for their businesses, and understanding that aspiration is critical to running a successful small business.” This action plan from the experts at The UPS Store can help you get you on your way to launching a successful start-up:

Your work space should fall within your monthly budget while still satisfying the needs of your customers.

4. Determine your budget and expenses.

Assessing your available funds enables you to prioritize and assign an appropriate amount to your business assets. This should include necessities for daily operations, as well as secondary expenses, such as traveling and meetings.

1. Analyze your target audience.

5. Develop a business plan.

Start by performing extensive market research to understand your customers' core necessities. Assessing your target demographic gives you a clear perspective on how to serve the people in it.

Think of a business plan as a road map that indicates where your start-up stands and where it is headed. If you need funding, it’s also a great tool to articulate your ideas, philosophies and goals.

2. Determine a legal structure.

6. Set up a marketing plan.

Selecting the right legal structure ultimately determines how you handle income taxes and all government reporting requirements. Many small businesses fall under a sole proprietorship or limited liability company (LLC) while bigger entities may identify as corporations.

3. Establish your premises.

Choosing the right business setting could be the difference between a cost-effective start-up and a moderately expensive one.

Conduct an analysis of your business’s strengths and weaknesses to devise strategies and tactics that account for challenges and opportunities your business is likely to face. The scale of your marketing plan will likely depend on resources you have available and your target audience, but should feature a variety of tactics. Your plan should include printed materials like direct mailers, business cards, newsletters, flyers, banners and posters, as well as digital to cover things like search and social media.

7. Be competitive.

Examine your competitors to determine the areas in which they thrive and see what makes them successful. Learn from the landscape to improve upon their strengths and gain an upper hand on their weaknesses. For example, implement various pricing models, such as special offers, coupons and rewards, rather than sticking with your initial, low price to remain competitive and profitable. With a carefully structured action plan, you can turn your start-up idea into a successful business. Find more tips for your small business at TheUPSStore.com.

hen you’re launching a small business, there could be any number of reasons you may need to pitch your idea. You may be courting an investor, recruiting talent or even starting to market your product or service. Brevity is often essential, so learn how to concisely pitch your business like a pro with these tips: Draw out the essentials. Reduce your pitch to a few digestible bites. Make sure you have an intro that is brief enough to get someone’s undivided attention then elaborate on your points, such as your top competitive advantages, and provide more detail about your business as a whole. Come to entertain. Add an entertainment factor to make your pitch engaging and memorable. Of course, you need substance to go along with style, but keeping your audience focused and doing something to stand out is essential. Anticipate questions. Prepare yourself to reassure concerned investors and flesh out subjects you may have kept brief for your presentation. Make sure to practice your answers so you sound confident. Grabbing attention is important, but you need to be able to back up your spiel. Know your audience. This is the cardinal rule of communication. Make sure you do your homework and know who you are addressing. This shows you value your listener’s time and feedback. Furthermore, insight about his or her philosophy in doing business can be extremely valuable during a pitch. Practice until it hurts. Take the time to practice your entire pitch, including answers to likely questions, until you know it inside and out. The more comfortable you are, the more likely you are to win someone over in a meeting. Have the materials to back it up. A written document is your chance to leave a lasting impression and elaborate on your major selling points. It’s also a chance to show your professionalism, so be sure to proofread carefully and package the information for a polished presentation. APN: 607-391-029-1 Commonly known as: 41460 TRINITY CIRCLE, BERMUDA DUNES, CA 92203 The sale will be held at: AT THE FRONT STEPS TO THE ENTRANCE OF THE FORMER CORONA POLICE DEPARTMENT, 849 W. SIXTH STREET, CORONA, CA 92882 Per the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, the estimated opening bid will be $286,458.41. There will be no proration of taxes, rents or other income or liabilities, except that the purchaser will pay, at or before closing, his pro rata share of any real estate taxes that have been paid by the Secretary to the date of the foreclosure sale. When making their bids, the winning bidders with the exception of the Secretary must submit a deposit totaling ten percent (10%) of the Secretary’s estimated bid amount in the form of a certified check or cashier’s check made payable to the undersigned Foreclosure Commissioner. Ten percent of the estimated bid amount for this sale is $28,645.84. A deposit need not accompany each oral bid. If the successful bid is oral, a deposit of $28,645.84 must be presented before the bidding is closed. The deposit is nonrefundable. The remainder of the purchase price must be delivered within 30 days of the sale or at such other time as the Secretary may determine for good cause shown, time being of the essence. This amount, like the bid deposits, must be delivered in the form of a certified or cashier’s check. If the Secretary is the highest bidder, he need not pay the bid amount in cash. The successful bidder will pay all conveying fees, all real estate and other taxes that are due on or after the delivery date of the remainder of the payment and all other costs associated with the transfer of title. At the conclusion of the sale, the deposits of the unsuccessful bidders will be returned to them. The Secretary may grant an extension of time within which to deliver the remainder of the payment. All extensions will be for 15 day increments for a fee of: $500.00, paid in advance. The extension fee shall be in the form of a certified or cashiers check made payable to the Secretary of HUD. If the high bidder closes the sale prior to the expiration of any extension period, the unused portion of the extension fee shall be applied toward the amount due. If the high bidder is unable to close the sale within the required period, or within any extensions of time granted by the Secretary, the high bidder may be required to forfeit the cash deposit or, at the election of the Foreclosure Commissioner after consultation with the HUD representative, will be liable to HUD for any costs incurred as a result of such failure. The Commissioner may, at the direction of the HUD representative, offer the property to the second highest bidder for an amount equal to the highest price offered by that bidder. There is no right of redemption, or right of possession based upon a right of redemption, in the mortgagor or others subsequent to a foreclosure completed pursuant to the Act. Therefore, the Foreclosure Commissioner will issue a Deed to the purchaser(s) upon receipt of the entire purchase price in accordance with the terms of the sale as provided herein. HUD does not guarantee that the property will be vacant. The scheduled foreclosure sale shall be cancelled or adjourned if it is established, by documented written application of the mortgagor to the Foreclosure Commissioner not less than 3 days before the date of sale, or otherwise, that the default or defaults upon which the foreclosure is based did not exist at the time of service of this notice of default and foreclosure sale, or all amounts due under the mortgage agreement are tendered to the Foreclosure Commissioner, in the form of a certified or cashier’s check payable to the Secretary of HUD, before public auction of the property is completed. The amount that must be paid if the Mortgage Deed of Trust is to be reinstated prior to the scheduled sale is based on the nature of the breach, this loan is not subject to reinstatement. A total payoff is required to cancel the foreclosure sale or the breach must be otherwise cured. A description of the default is as follows: FAILURE TO PAY THE PRINCIPAL BALANCE AND ANY OUTSTANDING FEES, COSTS, AND INTEREST WHICH BECAME ALL DUE AND PAYABLE BASED UPON THE DEATH OF ALL MORTGAGORS. Tender of payment by certified or cashier’s check or application for cancellation of the foreclosure sale shall be submitted to the address of the Foreclosure Commissioner provided below. Juncker says Italy’s ‘fate’ not ruled by finances

By Desert Star Staff EU President Jean-Claude Juncker said Italy’s fate is not “in the hands of financial markets,” apparently replying to earlier comments by EU’s budget chief who said finance turmoil would teach Italians not to vote for “populists.” “Italy’s fate does not lie in the hands of the financial markets. Regardless of which political party may be in power, Italy is a founding member of the European Union that has contributed immensely to European integration,” Juncker said in a statement. Despite the recent political developments in the country, Juncker is confident that it would continue “on its European path.” “The Commission is ready to work with Italy with

responsibility and mutual respect. Italy deserves respect,” the official stressed. Juncker’s comments came as an apparent response to earlier statements by his fellow Euro bureaucrat, Budget Commissioner Gunther Oettinger. The official warned of possible financial consequences that political turmoil in Italy might bear, and which would come as a valuable “lesson” to Italian voters. “My concerns and expectations are that the coming weeks will show that markets, government bonds and Italy’s economy could be so drastically impacted that they would serve as a signal to voters not to vote for populists on the right and left,” Oettinger told DW in an exclusive interview.

EU budget chief’s remark on ‘markets teaching Italians to not vote for populists’ sparks outrage Oettinger was also roasted by his Commission colleague, European Council President Donald Tusk, who urged all the EU institutions to “respect the voters.” He also reminded that the EU bureaucrats were there “to serve the voters” and not to “lecture” them. Oettinger’s remarks drew an angry response from Italian politicians, including Lega Nord leader Matteo Salvini, who accused the EU official of interfering in the internal affairs of the country and urged him to resign. Salvini deemed the comments “threatening” and said they demonstrated a “German desire for hegemony.”

“Can you imagine such disdain for democracy,” Salvini wrote on Facebook. “He should resign this afternoon.” European Parliament leader for the 5-Star Movement (M5S) Laura Agea said that Oettinger’s “words are of an unprecedented gravity and are proof of the clear manipulations that Italian democracy has suffered in the last few days.” She urged Juncker to “immediately deny” the official. The political uncertainty has been riddling Italy since the March parliamentary elections, as none of the parties achieved a decisive majority. Following months of negotiations, the Eurosceptic Lega Nord and M5S parties managed to agree on a coalition and presented the country’s President Sergio Mattarella with the PM candidacy on May 21. However, the cabinet was rejected by the president due to the pick of Paolo Savona as Minister of the Economy pick, in order to avoid “risking an exit from the euro.” Italy ended up with an ex-IMF chief, Carlo Cottarelli, named by Mattarella as the new Prime Minister on Monday. The pro-austerity and pro-EU official is expected to form and lead an interim government until new elections are held. The move was condemned by the Eurosceptic majority parties as “unconstitutional.”

Powerful Drama “Disobedience” on Screen

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critic Association (ATCA) Movies have come a long way since 1934 when it comes to the subject matter of ‘forbidden fruit’ as depicted in Lillian Hellman’s muted, but daring play and film, “We Three”, was produced in the heyday of the Hays Office, when movie censors reigned supreme as to what American audiences could or not see In the cinema. The ‘no-no’ subject matter in the legitimate theatre was breached by Tennessee Williams when he referred to sexual subject matters in his plays as “that of which we dare not speak”. That was in the 50’s. It’s now almost the second decade of the 21st Century, where filmic boundaries, stories and audiences, now accept homoerotic love; which if, tastefully and honestly done, keeps forbidden sexual love as a legitimate subject-matter category and one that reflects and recognizes all aspects of human relationships. In most western societies we now live as a true global community free to live as one chooses. The 2017 Oscar-winning Argentina-born, now a Chilean citizen, film director, Sebastain Lelio of “A Fantastic Woman”, fame is once more in 2018 Oscar Nomination territory with his riveting, deeply emotional, romantic new drama “Disobedience”, starring Rachel Mc Adams, Rachel Weisz, and Alessandro Nivola. The story set in England is adapted from the novel “Disobedience” by Naomi Alderman and the screenplay, sensitively written by Sabastian Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz, centers around now New York-based photographer Ronit Kruska (a sensational, smoky, alluring, introspective Rachel Weisz), who flies home to London after learning about the death of her estranged, charismatic, Rabbi father Rav Kruska (Anton

Lesser), the Spiritual leader of a highly Orthodox temple where traditions run deep. Ronit returns to the same Orthodox Jewish community in North London’s Hendon district, that shunned her years earlier for her childhood attraction to Esti Kuperman, a close female friend brilliantly portrayed by a conflicted Rachel McAdams, who is now married to Rabbi Dovid Kuperman, a childhood friend of both women; now sets in motion a series of internalized emotions that soon reignites their burning attraction and passion Alessandro Nivola and Rachel McAdams in “Disobedience” as the two women explore boundaries of faith and adult sexuality. Jewish life in England is somewhat different than here in America. The closest link to English Jewry for American Orthodox Jews are the Orthodox Hasidic communities of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Also, there are many background story points and echoes that one will find in the stage-play “The Wanderers”, written last year by playwright Anna Zeigler, who set her powerful play within New York’s Satmar Hasidic Judaism sect in Brooklyn. They are integral to the story and are filmed in such a manner that the emotional depth felt by the characters and performed by two Hollywood stars, doesn’t become a seatsquirming experience but rather, as a catharsis for both the characters and the audience. “Disobedience”, is now in wide release and currently screens at the Camelot Theatre in the Palm Springs Cultural Center.
