Stagecoach Fest

Fans pose in front of Stagecoach art. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Stagecoach 2017 started of with larger crowds on the first night. Cole Swindell and Dierks Bentley were the last performers on Friday, and the crowds loved them. While walking through the crowds, I saw people dancing in the walkways. The walkways were wider this year that allowed

the flow of people to go more smoothly. Swindell would ask the crowd a question, and the crowd would erupt with screaming and yelling. The walls of the walkways were filled therefore people could get a good look of the stage and of course cell phones were high in the air to get a video or photo of the singer.

One of my favorites and so thrilled to see was the iconic, Jerry Lee Lewis, who is considered by many to be a pioneer in rock and roll with his expertise on the piano. They announced Lewis, and the crowd went wild. They all know and love his songs, even the younger crowd. He needed a little help walking

to the piano but once there he became the same Jerry Lee Lewis everyone loves. His fingers flew over the keyboard, and his voice was amazingly strong for his age of 81. Most of his band were of the elderly type too and continued to bring the same rock and roll music they did years ago. The crowd went crazy when they

played his signature song, Great Balls of Fire, and wanted to hear more after, A Whole Lot of Shaking Going On. A lot of people love to see these iconic performers from years past as they grew up with these songs that never seem to die. 38 Special followed Continues on Page 10

regarding reserve accounts. Associations must have a reserve study every third year, under Civil Code 5550, identifying the estimated replacement date and cost of major components which are association responsibility. Under Civil 5550(b)(5), the study must include a funding plan indicating how the association will fund the annual contribution needed to amass the funds needed for replacement of the items. Under Civil 5560, association boards are required to adopt the funding plan at an open meeting of the board, along with any consequent assessment increase. Civil 5570 requires a detailed disclosure report detailing how close are the major components to requiring replacement, along with how much reserve fund has been accumulated to meet that future cost. The Annual Budget Report (Civil 5300) contains seven different disclosures

associations must make annually to the members, including a summary of the reserves (5300(b)(2)), and a summary of the board’s funding plan (5300(b)(3). Civil Code 5500 requires the board review association operating and reserve accounts (and deposits and withdrawals) at least quarterly. All of these statutes imply that associations must have a reserve fund in place, since the various requirements all assume a reserve account is in place. There is no law specially requiring reserve accounts to be actually funded in any particular amount. This is sensible, since there is no “one size fits all” answer for common interest communities, and so many factors bear upon what is a properly funded association. The condominium lending guidelines of FHA/FNMA require at least 10% of the annual budget to go into the reserve account, a reflection

that those lending organizations consider reserves to be critical. Many associations do not follow their reserve study preparer’s recommended reserve account contributions because the board is trying to “hold the line” on monthly assessments. However, this misleads the homeowners, since the association is then quietly slipping into debt, and the members are likely to be hit with a special assessment and/ or loan payments when major replacement work is needed. Each month the roofs, asphalt, paint, decks and other items deteriorate. For example, a “ten year roof” probably has an expected life of 120 months. If the association is not depositing 1/120 of the cost each month into reserves, it is falling into a deficit each month on that item. The fact that homeowners don’t feel it, or see it on a financial summary, does not mean it is not a financial fact. Homebuyers need to

be very careful to review the association’s reserve status before they decide to buy, and should be aware of the fact that their appraisal will not take into account the health of the HOA’s reserve fund. This means that the true value of the property may not be presented in the appraisal, since unfortunately the marketplace does not adequately devalue the price of underfunded condominium association residences. Urge the board to faithfully attend to the association’s reserves. Thanks for your question, Kelly

By Janice Gouh In my opinion… Most people’s greatest procrastination is in making the basic estate documents. Designating what “your wishes” will be in regard to passing along possessions, and also, making sure that your wishes regarding your healthcare at death are honored, are very important to put in writing. Is it that we are too busy enjoying life or too busy struggling in it, to take care of basic documents? Your rights and wishes in death will be honored by creating your plan. Here are the five crucial documents that estate planning professionals agree are needed for a successful plan. 1. Will: The fundamental estate planning document is a will, which establishes the individual responsible for administering the client’s estate, as well as the beneficiaries. Without this document in place when the client dies, state intestacy statutes will take effect and create an estate plan on behalf of the client, which may not be what the client had in mind .If no one under the statute can be found, the decedent’s assets may end up going to the state. 2. Durable General Power of Attorney: A durable general power of attorney authorizes someone to act on behalf of the person who appointed them, in financial and personal business and tax affairs, in the event that the client is incapacitated and not able to make such decisions for him or herself. If the power of attorney is “durable,” it remains effective through the

client’s subsequent incapacity. It ends at death of one. 3. Health Care Proxy: Another basic document that should be included in estate plans is a health care proxy. By executing this document, the client appoints a person to act as an agent for his or her medical decisions if a time comes when the client is unable to make such decisions. For example, “If the principal is under anesthesia and the doctor requires an immediate decision as to treatment, an agent under a medical power of attorney may make such a decision,” It’s important the principal and agent discuss the principal’s wishes. 4. Living Will: Unlike the powers of attorney documents, a living will does not appoint a person to act on behalf of the client. Instead, a living will documents a client’s wishes about being kept alive “in case of a terminal condition or a persistent vegetative state,” In some states, the operative document is the living will while in others the courts will only enforce the health care proxy. In either case, it is common to have both prepared since the living will provides guidance to the health care agent on the patient’s wishes. 5.Trusts If you own property or anything that you hold a title to other that a vehicle, you need to establish a trust. This simple document saves beneficiaries lots of money, because you will avoid going to probate court, in which you not only have to pay court costs but attorney fees to settle property transfer. 6. HIPAA Authorization:

Generally, a medical power of attorney will include a provision, known as a HIPPA authorization, under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, granting an agent access to the client’s medical records. Without this specific authorization it is unlawful for a health care provider to disclose health-related information to a third party. Without these five basic estate planning documents, “things can become difficult and stressful.” These

estate documents are easy and can be implemented for a very small fee.

This is the 18th consecutive year that the Auen Foundation has supported this program. “We are impressed by the AAP – Food Samaritans recent expansion of its mission,” said Catharine Reed, Senior Program Officer for the Auen Foundation. “For more

than 26 years, this organization has offered nutritional support to Coachella Valley residents that need it the most. Originally, AAP was focused on serving people living with HIV/AIDS, but they recently expanded their mission to include people living with other chronic illnesses. We applaud this expansion and outreach to some of our community’s most vulnerable residents.” AAP – Food Samaritans was founded in 1991 to help the most atrisk members of the Greater Palm Springs community – people who are lowincome and compromised by HIV/AIDS. It recently

Its ongoing mission is to ensure that all AAP clients can continue to live their lives with dignity and self-respect. “I’m pleased that AAP – Food Samaritans has had such a beneficial and long-standing relationship with the Auen Foundation,” said Mark Anton, CEO and Executive Director of AAP. “Their ongoing support of AAP has played a vital role in ensuring that we continue to fulfill our mission of providing monthly nutritional support to low income Coachella Valley residents who live with

chronic illness. AAP does not receive federal or state financial assistance, so generous private donations like this allow us to continue to support the people who need it most.” ABOUT AUEN FOUNDATION Established in 1992, the Auen Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the overall quality of life of the aging population and raising awareness of the precious-end-of-life stage. Lawyers’ Group Prepared for May Day Protests

National Lawyers Guild Legal Observers document rights violations at protests. (Thomas Altfather Good/Wikimedia Commons) By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – With May Day demonstrations taking place in cities across the country Monday, the National Lawyers Guild is

fielding on-the-ground legal support in case of arrests. Organizers are calling it a national day of protest Trump administration policies on everything from the

environment to immigration. Local chapters of the National Lawyers Guild have been holding “know your rights” and Legal Observer training in more than a dozen

cities coast to coast. King Downing, the National Lawyers Guild’s mass-defense director, says the message the guild wants protesters to hear is simple. “You have the absolute right to do this, and don’t let any change in climate intimidate you from going out there as an individual or as an organization or as a coalition,” he states. The National Lawyers Guild’s know-your-rights booklet is available online in five languages. Police contend that they only make arrests when protesters disobey the law. But protest organizers say experience tells a different story. As an example, Downing points to events he witnessed at the Inauguration Day protests in Washington in January. “Several hundred people were kettled and rounded up,” he recalls. “Bystanders, even journalists, are not free

from risk of arrest for covering First Amendment activities.” More than 200 people were arrested in protests that day. U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has ordered a review of all agreements between the Justice Department and police departments aimed at curbing police abuse, saying such oversight is not the federal government’s responsibility – remarks Downing found troubling. “The attorney general’s remarks in favor of police may be giving them a sense of a green light to go ahead and act beyond their normal scope of abuse,” he stats. Downing adds that in many cities there is an NLG arrest hotline, and he urges those participating in May Day protests to write that number on their arms in case they are arrested.

Tens of Thousands Expected at May Day Rallies Across State

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – Monday is May Day – and immigrants’ rights and labor groups are banding together to celebrate with marches in hundreds of cities across the country, and across the Golden State. The Los Angeles march has been going strong for 17 years. And Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), says this year the protest has special meaning. “We are protesting the inhumane way immigrants are treated in this country, the lack of immigration reform and, in the age of Trump, just the cruel policies that seek to

The marches also include labor groups and contingents from the Women’s March, Black Lives Matter, refugee groups and those representing the Muslim community. The Los Angeles March starts at 11 a.m. at MacArthur Park and heads to City Hall. Salas says it’s a day to recognize the contribution of immigrants and people of color to society and to the workforce up and down the state. “We have about 17 activities that are going to be happening throughout the state of California, including San Francisco, Sacramento,

Millionaires to Trump: Keep Estate Tax By Desert Star Staff CHEYENNE, Wyo. – More than 50 multi-millionaires have signed a letter urging President Donald Trump and Congress to abandon their attempts to abolish the federal estate tax, the only tax on inherited wealth in the U.S. Chuck Collins, heir to the Oscar Mayer fortune and author of the book “Born on Third Base,” points out the tax only applies to households with assets of more than $11 million. He adds the tax was put in place 100 years ago to prevent the kind of inherited aristocracy the nation fought a revolutionary war over. “In that way, the estate tax is a fundamentally American tax,” he states. “It’s really the way in which we protect a level playing field and ensure that too much inequality doesn’t sort of upend our

democratic system.” Collins says starting in the 1990s, a handful of wealthy families – including Mars, Walton, Gallo and others – invested millions lobbying to end the tax, a move that would save their heirs billions. Trump once called the tax a “burden on the American worker.” But Collins notes that more than 99 percent of Americans will never be subject to the tax, and is confident the estates that will take a hit can afford it. Supporters of Trump’s proposed tax plan argue lowering taxes on corporations and the wealthy will lead to a revived economy and ultimately increase tax revenues. Collins acknowledges that cutting taxes for the middle class, along with increased wages, can boost the economy, but he says tax

By Desert Star Staff Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg began 2017 with a bold personal challenge: “to have visited and met people in every state in the US by the end of the year.” So far, his whistle-stop tour of the states certainly bears all the hallmarks of early political canvassing. As part of the challenge, Zuckerberg reportedly wanted

is to get out and talk to more people about how they’re living, working, and thinking about the future,” he added. The Facebook boss met with Daniel Moore and his family at their rural home in Ohio on Friday. Moore voted for Barack Obama twice, but then actively campaigned on behalf of then-candidate Donald Trump. Moore told local news outlet WKBN that the Facebook CEO wanted to find out more about America’s so-called ‘Rust belt,’ which garnered so much attention during the 2016 presidential election campaign. Zuckerberg has also visited Michigan and Wisconsin on his nationwide tour, making sure to meet longtime Democrats who voted for Trump in the last to take plenty of wholesome, election and asked his team to salt-of-the-earth photos reach out and find such people. with everyday working-class Americans along the way.Such “I’ve spent significant time a tour becomes even more in many states already, so I’ll conspicuous in light of unsealed need to travel to about 30 court filings from a classstates this year to complete action lawsuit in 2016 in which this challenge,” the tech Zuckerberg attempted to dilute CEO wrote on his personal shareholder power and afford Facebook page on January 3. himself permanent control of “After a tumultuous last year, my hope for this challenge the $440 billion company.

More than 99 percent of the nation’s taxpayers currently are exempt from the federal estate tax, slated for elimination under President Donald Trump’s tax proposal. economic impact,” he maintains. “The rest of us have to pick up the slack, and ‘the rest of us’ is the middle class.” Collins says if Trump’s claim to a $10 billion net

worth is true, eliminating the estate tax would effectively transfer $4 billion from U.S. coffers to his heirs.

Of particular note in the proceedings was a message sent to Zuckerberg by Marc Andreessen, one of Facebook’s most prominent investors, in which he raised the issue of “how to define the government service thing without freaking out shareholders that you are losing commitment.” “It’s the thing people will point to on announcement and say ‘what the f**k are you guys doing agreeing to this’, particularly since… government service would require you to give up control of Facebook anyway and it’s a moot point,” said Andreessen, adding credence to speculation that Zuckerberg will make a run for political office at some point in the future. In terms of broadening political appeal and widening a potential voter base, Zuckerberg has made a notable 180-degree turn on his religious stance in the past 12 months. The entrepreneur previously declared himself an atheist, on Christmas Day no less (though Zuckerberg himself was raised Jewish), but has since tempered his position

by stating that he believes “religion is very important.” Daniel Moore: My family and I are so blessed to have met and enjoyed an evening with Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and co-founder of Facebook. He is truly a great and intelligent man. He has a lot of plans and aspirations to make our world a better place. The world needs more men like Mark. I’ll always remember the ideas we shared with one another. If we could all set aside our differences and come together, dedicate ourselves to a common purpose of making the world more open and connected, achieve this purpose in an ethical manner, include talented individuals of diverse backgrounds and walks of life, empower all those with a desire to get involved, and implement an efficient process to ensure that our common purpose is completed, our nation and world would not be so polarized. I pray that the LORD is with Mark Zuckerberg and guides the steps of his life as he works to accomplish his goals.

Environmental Groups: Trump’s First 100 Days “Dizzying”

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio -- President Donald Trump marked his 100th day in office this weekend, saying his administration “has brought profound change to Washington.” While they agree the change has been profound, environmental groups say it’s been anything but positive, especially regarding policies that protect public health. Natural Resources Defense Council president www.desertstarweekly.com

Rhea Suh said since taking office, Trump has targeted clean water protections, fuel economy standards and safeguards against dangerous climate pollutants. “The first 100 days are fairly dizzying in terms of the level, the breadth and the depth of the environmental attacks that they’ve unleashed,” Suh said. “Things like the purity of the water we drink, the cleanliness of the air we breathe and sanctity of the places that we recreate.”

Trump also has threatened to pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Accords, and moved to cancel the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan, calling it a threat to jobs. The plan would have forced coalfired power plants to reduce their carbon emissions. Trump’s 100th day was Saturday, and 300,000 people attended a national climate march in Washington D.C. Events were held in solidarity in Cincinnati, May 3, 2017

Cleveland, Columbus and dozens of other U.S. cities. The Trump administration also proposed significant cuts to the EPA and nominated climate change skeptic Scott Pruitt to head it. Suh said this is despite polling that shows a majority of Americans would like the agency’s powers preserved or strengthened. “With 30 percent cuts to that agency, that’s literally like taking cops off the beat,” she said. “That will prevent EPA from doing its job. It will

prevent EPA from protecting us and it will certainly allow polluters to have a greater license in their activities.” Trump has touted his environmental policies as necessary to spur economic growth. According to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted 73 days into the president’s term, 61 percent of voters disapprove of Trump’s handling of the environment - more than twice as many as those who approve.

Trump blasts US infrastructure, pledges to spend $1T

By Desert Star Staff President Trump has compared the state of US infrastructure to that of the third world and said his infrastructure plan is nearly completed which envisages a $1 trillion spend over 10 years. The proposal is said to cover more than bridges and roads expanding to include energy, water, potential broadband and veterans’ hospitals. “We’re going to do

infrastructure very quickly. We’ve got the plan largely completed, and we’ll be filing over the next two or three weeks, maybe sooner,” President Donald Trump told CBS News’ John Dickerson in an interview that aired on Monday’s “This Morning” program. President Trump has been using China’s slick new roads and airports as an example of what he wants. “What China’s done is

incredible,” the president told conservative journalists, according to the Washington Examiner. “We’re like a Third World nation,” he added of US transportation. “We build a bridge and it’s like a miracle in this country,” he added, expressing frustration on moving forward with the plan. Trump then mocked the $6 billion spent to fix up Iraq, Afghanistan and other Middle East nations.

“We’ve spent $6 trillion in the Middle East,” he said in a renewed push for his plan, and “it’s 20 times worse than when we started.” Capitol Hill and the construction world are eagerly awaiting Trump’s yet-to-be officially released plan which the administration has touted will give a face lift to the nation’s roads and bridges, while also funding other projects like water systems and internet access. President Trump also told Bloomberg News on Monday that a gasoline tax hike is “something that I would certainly consider… if we earmarked money toward the highways.” Trump’s tax plan, released last week, did not mention the gas tax, which is 18.4 cents a gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents a gallon for diesel. It was last raised in 1993, when gas averaged $1.17 a gallon. In March, US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said the Trump administration would unveil its infrastructure plan later this year, but she did not offer details of funding for projects, according to CNBC. Chao said the

By Desert Star Staff PORTLAND, Ore. -- As the opioid crisis continues to haunt the country, communities are looking for ways to fight back. Opioid use causes about 91 deaths a day in the United States and resulted in an historic high of 33,000 deaths in 2015. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that number actually could be an under-estimation. In Oregon, the rate of opioid deaths is higher than the national average. Dr. Safina Koreishi, medical director at

She said cultivating trust among community members can be a useful prevention tool, because addiction doesn’t happen in a vacuum. “Talking about, within the community, how trauma can affect all of this; and that is something that we’ve been working on with our community,” Koreishi said. “And our community within the North Coast is really passionate about

it and has been struggling with it and moving forward regarding what does community resilience mean and how can we collectively build that.” Koreishi said there are many facets to fighting the epidemic, but the best tool is education. She said opioids should not be the first choice for treating chronic pain, and it’s important for medical professionals to know that. For instance, getting better sleep may be a more effective tool for treating pain than prescription pain medications.

And Koreishi said it’s imperative to get pills off the streets. “We’ve funded and helped the community start drug takeback boxes within pharmacies so it’s easier for people to give back unused pills,” she said. Koreishi said she believes we’re in the midst of a societal paradigm shift regarding these drugs, but she isn’t sure we’ve reached the tipping point yet. She said everyone has to help to stop the staggering destruction that opioid abuse has wreaked on the country. “It’s everybody’s

By Desert Star Staff Irlen Syndrome is a visual processing challenge affecting 15% of the general population and nearly 50% of struggling readers. If left unaddressed, it can result in academic struggles and low self-esteem that can follow a student into adulthood. Fortunately, Irlen Syndrome is easy to address and remediate, if it is properly identified through formal screenings. Because of the large financial investment required to screen all students in public schools, Academic Solutions USA, in coordination with the Irlen Syndrome Foundation, is raising money to bring screenings for Irlen

Syndrome to the schools of the Coachella Valley, making intervention for Irlen Syndrome available to all students who need it. Located in the Coachella Valley, Academic Solutions USA has already begun raising funds for this project to be implemented in the Fall of 2017. Any donation made to the Irlen Syndrome Foundation, and designated for the Coachella Valley Schools Screening Project, will be used to pay for Irlen screenings in Coachella Valley Public Schools. administration plans to offer incentives for public-private partnerships rather than simply fund improvements. It was not clear how much new federal funding the Trump administration would propose. She said the plan would aim to speed the processes for government projects. “If you have a job that you can’t start within 90 days, we’re not going to give you the money for it because it doesn’t help,” Trump said last month. “We’re going to be very strong on that. They have to be able to start within 90 days.” The idea of spending $1 trillion on such projects could stumble in Congress, where partisan differences over how to pay for it could overtake the bipartisan interest in getting something done. President Trump has signed an order to create an American Technology Council to help the government deliver better digital services. The new council would bring combine government and private-sector ideas to solve long-term problems and would begin by inviting big names from Silicon Valley to the White House in early June.

responsibility to get us out of this, and I literally think every single person within society plays a role in addressing this,” she said; “just like in addressing any other major, complex societal issue.” In April, the federal government distributed money to states to help fight opioid abuse, including $6.5 million for Oregon, as part of the 21st Century Cures Act. Some members of Congress have argued the legislation does not provide nearly enough to fight the crisis.

We Are Not Alone At ECETI, UFO’s are real!

By Jackie Devereaux Joshua Tree, CA – Have you ever wondered about UFOs? Ever think about intelligent life somewhere out there in the Universe? Maybe we are not alone? If you want to explore those deep philosophical questions, then head to the 2017 Contact in the Desert convention held May 18-22 at the Institute of Mentalphysics where UFO researchers, contactees and thousands of fans will converge for the annual conference slated with the History Channel’s panel of experts from their Ancient Aliens television series. According to recent polls, approximately 50 percent of adults believe in UFOs and extraterrestrials. Main stream scientists and UFO researchers have been battling each other over this issue since the Roswell, New Mexico incident in July 1947. And the UFO issue appears to be in the news more and more with sightings photographed and videotaped on cellphones worldwide. One home-grown, highly experienced UFO Contactee, James Gilliland, founder of ECETI, a 70acre ranch located at Trout Lake, Washington has witnessed hundreds, if not thousands of UFOs firsthand. (ECETI is the acronym for Enlightened Contact with Extraterrestrial Intelligence.) “This place is a vortex, a sacred site where the veils between worlds is thin,” he said. “Mount Adams holds a door into the mountains, a light-door with a cave where space ships go in and out. We’ve filmed it with third generation night vision and see a giant light pyramid,” Gilliland said in a recent telephone interview. “I’ve had contact with quite a few beings.” “We have low-level

contacts with the Greys and Reptilians. It’s best to avoid contact with them. The benevolent ones are better to work with. Some are tall, some short, the blue-skinned ones come from a copper base, they’re feline beings, and others,” he added, noting there are 12 different star nations involved in the Earth’s and human evolution. “We’ve been colonized several times. Our poles have shifted, meteorites have hit the planet, the sun’s cycles and flares, the volcanic eruptions” all have reformed and evolved the planet. “We were (originally) terraformed by the Pleiadeans, then taken over by the Reptilians. The Pleiades (star system) has more genetic stock here than any other race.” Luckily, they are back to reclaim Earth with the emanating frequency of love, he said. Gilliland has a wide collection of photos and videos from his ranch with solid documentation and highlevel testimonies to prove his claims. Go to YouTube for one piece of video evidence at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=SBNOTEtc5fU “We are on the edge

of taking a quantum leap in consciousness. The physics is there to back it up, and the science is there to back it up. If we change consciousness, we can change the physical world in which we live. “NASA scientists, Boeing and Lockheed (aircraft) engineers have come here and witnessed the UFOs,” he said. “They appeared in the press on Coast-toCoast radio, and told what “they saw for themselves.” Seeing UFOs and communing with ETs are not new experiences for Gilliland, a native of Apple Valley, California. “We saw ships all the time when I was a kid. My dad was a local (Apple Valley) dentist; his family came from Roswell, New Mexico. As kids, we’d sleep outside in the high desert, and see ships all the time.” In addition to running ECETI, Gilliland is a bestselling author, internationallyknown lecturer, minister, counselor, and multiple NearDeath Experiencer. He is a visionary dedicated to the awakening and healing of humanity and the Earth who teaches higher dimensional realities of experience. He documents and shares amazing multi-dimensional contact phenomenon which can be viewed at www.

eceti.org or the ECETI YouTube Channel. He was initiated by a venerable Lama Guyaltrul Rinpoche and given the name Rigdzin Norbu, “Jewel of Pure Awareness.” His unique focus on dispelling the myths propagated by the disinformation system make him an in-demand speaker at events such as the International UFO Congress, Star Knowledge Conferences and Contact in the Desert. Gilliland’s books Reunion with Source, Becoming Gods, and The Ultimate Soul Journey educate, awaken, inform and heal. He is also the host of the documentary Contact Has Begun. His latest book, Anunnaki Return: Star Nations and the Days to Come, is a powerful look at what is happening on a multi-dimensional level as we move forward in this time of great change. HOROSCOPES ARIES

Something’s (everything about you) exalted, there’s an abundance of physical and emotional energy. Your moods swing into a rhythm following the stars. You seek to understand, then protect values, possessions and are tenacious, like a Taurus. Although fluctuating, financially you’re prosperous. You feel sentimental, kind and loving. You wonder about your new self.

TAURUS Watching you these days we see activity, forcefulness, courage, leadership. You’re free and independent, always lead by imagination and vision. Your creativity asserts itself everywhere. Enlightenment is your purpose. Nothing obstructs this, not even close relationships. You pioneer new enterprises. You say you found your Path and need no one (or so it seems). Yes you do.

GEMINI You move into a reflective phase, becoming more sensitive to the needs of others. At times, you will be drawn into the mysterious and mystical through prayer, and to the occult through meditation and visualizations. What are you reading these days? It is good to stay behind the scenes, study things like forgiveness, apocatastasis (a Greek word)

MAY 3 – 9, 2017 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

taught by St. Gregory of Nyssa. What does it mean? The world this week is being sanctified. Where is your crystal bowl?

CANCER Enlightenment this week and month come through family, social groups, friendships, organizations and/or communities seeking to reform and revolutionize society. You will ask what are the collective objectives as you define future hopes and wishes. If they are not practical you will make them so. New ideas become ideals, illuminating your mind. You have a muse.

LEO You seek enlightenment and illumination of thoughts through achievement in the world. Concerned with reputation, honor, recognition and fame, you learn how to influence others and be an enlightened intelligent loving authority. Assuming more responsibilities helps you learn how to lead with both power and love. When one is without the other, leadership is hollow. Leaders learn through suffering.

VIRGO Your high ideals seek justice for everyone. You attempt to remove the blindfold from the eyes of Lady justice. You aspire for more education, deeper consciousness and true wisdom. You want to

expand your mind through travel, religion or philosophical endeavors. Few see your spirit of adventure. Find and carve out of redwood or willow, oak or cypress, a sacred staff.

LIBRA You look to others, seeing how they live their deepest values. You contemplate aspects of death and regeneration. You see the phoenix-like qualities found in those with great courage. You seek a deeper level of intimacy with the mysteries. Some Librans enter into detective work, diagnosing mysteries. You will engage in conflict for the purpose of creating greater harmony. Many won’t understand. Carry on.

SCORPIO Enlightenment comes through seeing partners, intimates and those close to you with new eyes. Eyes not of judgment but of unconditional patience, love and understanding. You will find harmony through cooperation, balance through diplomacy, and peace through negotiation. This sounds like the United Nations, which is also Scorpio. The Great One is always knocking on the door of the U.N. And your heart, too.

SAGITTARIUS You will enlighten and illumine others, just like the Buddha would, by being practical, neutral and always seeking

wisdom; by tending to necessities (personal and professional); by assisting and serving others which creates a holy order of things; by tending with composure to daily health and details of daily life. All with a neutral attitude. Then you walk the razor’s edge gracefully.

CAPRICORN You’re often very dignified, and more so this month as the Buddha’s blessings shower upon all of us. Your dignity allows others to see you as noble, poised, self-possessed. You’re also creative, expressive and very entertaining (very funny sometimes), dramatic (in a good way), romantic (hidden) and playful. If anyone acts proud of themselves, praise them. They will find your response remarkable. You understand pride.

Perceptions are heightened concerning the environments you find yourself in. You seek to improve and enlighten them. This provides you with tasks and purpose, two things you need in order to feel comfort and a sense of beauty. Contact siblings, close friends, walk through neighborhoods, take short trips and listen to kirtan, learn Sanskrit. Draw the Diamond Sutra. This way you reach into the Light. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.

AQUARIUS Enlightenment occurs this month through family, acknowledging the foundation of your life and how you’ve adapted, embraced and understand early learnings. As you grew you sought new sources of happiness. Where are your loyalties now? Nurture and shelter your origins. Give thanks for your early years. They refined the goodness you experience within yourself now. Build your home on these.

‘The Legend of Georgia McBride’ --A Cheerful Comedy Told in Drag

In “The Legend of Georgia McBride,” the sweet, endearing Casey (Andrew Burnap), an Elvis impersonator by trade, doesn’t discover true acting success until he takes on the persona of a woman. As the story begins he is a happy-go-lucky guy who barely earns enough money to pay the rent as an Elvis impersonator in a seedy dive in Panama City, Florida called Cleo’s. His irresponsible, yet totally lovable ways are a source of deep concern to his wife Jo (Nija Okoro) when the rent check bounces because Casey had to buy a Papa John’s Pizza and their fragile bank account couldn’t handle both charges. He manages to get her to smile by snuggling and rubbing her feet, but things go really bad when she tells him they are going to have a baby. He is overjoyed, but before he can tell Eddie, his boss (Nick Searcy), he’s fired. The reason? Eddie’s cousin, a flamboyant drag queen named Miss Tracy Mills (Matt McGrath) has come to Florida and Eddie has promised him (her) his own show. As part of her act Miss Tracy Mills works with another drag queen, Miss Rexy (Larry Powell, who also plays Casey’s landlord, Jason). When Miss Tracy learns that Casey will have no job she gets her cousin Eddie to keep him on as a bartender. Soon the club finds an audience and begins to prosper but at this point Miss Rexy, after

drinking too much vodka, collapses and now there is a need for another drag queen to take his (her) place. Skillfully Miss Tracy gets a very, very reluctant Casey to step in as, of all singers, Edith Piaf. Casey has never heard of Piaf and becomes ever more upset when he is told he must lip-sync in French. How Miss Tracy shows him the secret of mouthing a song in French is hilarious. She gives him a slightly naughty saying to constantly repeat and it works. We were sitting in the third row so I could read Casey’s lips mouthing the saying as Edith’s voice spilled out into the audience. The results were hilarious and it was at this point that this odd, but very clever little comedy really came to life. Much of the fun comes from the varied, imaginative costumes the two men leap in and out of which were created by costume designer E.B. Brooks. And the choreography by Paul McGill is also a hoot. One of the funniest song combinations is performed by Matt Mc Grath as Miss Tracy. He mouths a long string of Broadway songs from “Les Miserables” to “Gypsy.” Each selection is short and sweet, about 16 bars, as the drag diva jumps, spins and does high kicks. The results are side-splitting. And as soon as she darts off to quick change, out comes the country sweetheart Miss Georgia McBride in another sexy, revealing outfit.

Andrew Burnap and Matt McGrath. Photo by Jeff Lorch Photography. Soon, and much to his surprise, Casey has become a drag sensation at the club and he is able to bring in lots of cash from all the money he generates in tips from the audience. His paycheck has also vastly improved. Another clever aspect of this show is is how Eddie announces the different shows at Cleo’s for the various holidays ranging from Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s Day to St Patrick’s Day. Soon Casey is making big bucks, but his wife still

thinks it’s because of his bartending skills. What could or will happen if she finds out? “The Legend of Georgia Mc Bride,” at the Geffen Playhouse Playhouse, 10886 LeConte Ave., L.A., ends May 14. Running time 1 hour 40 minutes. For information call (310) 208-5454 or online at www.geffenplayhouse. org. Ticket prices: $32$90, subject to change.

During the merry, merry month of May many fine

musicals will grace L.A. stages. Till May 14th you can enjoy “The Legend of Georgia McBride” at the Geffen. Then, starting on May 2nd the musical hit “The Bodyguard” comes to the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood featuring the fantastic Dolly Parton song “I Will Always Love You,” which will also always conjure up memories of the late, great Whitney Houston. And last, but by no means least, “Jersey Boys” returns to the Ahmanson Theatre from May 16th through June 24th.

Continued from Page 1 Lewis in the Palomino Stage. Palomino was filled to the brim with people that love that kind of music and fans who wanted to be able to hear those great bands. The Zombies, another extreme group from the 60s graced the stage before Lewis and 38 special preceded Lewis on stage. Some of these bands still have a few of the original performers. Other bands in the Palomino stage were Randy Rogers Band, Elle King, the Blasters and Quite Life. The early bands play to a smaller audience, and that makes it easier for people to get closer to the stage to hear some fantastic music.

The Mane Stage brought the famous country singer Dierks Bentley to the stage. Bentley had the crowd in his hands from the initial song, and fans would sing along on some songs. Cole Swindell started his set by coming out on a very high platform for his first song. Other performers were Jon Pardi, Maddie and Tae, William Michael Morgan, Dylan Scott, Ryan Hurd and Bailey Bryan, who started the concert early in the afternoon. The Mustang stage also had some very up-andcoming artists. And the Honkytonk area had bands playing all day.

SATURDAY Story and Photos by Pat Krause Stagecoach Day 2 were even more than expected. The crowds probably topped the 85,000 mark as it was people as far as you could see. You would expect the crowd to be more of the middle age group around the country, but I saw mostly the younger crowd. There are a lot of families with young children because it is a safe venue even for very small children. The art work is something to behold as they are huge. Fans love to take photos by the art works, and some are just trying to be in the shade. It was such a lovely weekend with fairly mild weather considering how hot it was the last couple weeks. Everyone was just waiting patiently for a couple of special artists. Willie Nelson celebrated his 84th birthday in front of a packed Palomino Tent and his many fans had overflowed the area so many stood outside the tent only to hear and listen and get a look at their favorite country star playing his guitar with a hole in it

from the years of use. This icon of country music brought his son to the stage with him. His son played stagecoach a few years back. It was a thrill to be able to see and hear this grand country legend in person. Of course, he sang his signature songs and those most famous that everyone knows. I love the fact that Golden-voice brings a lot of Iconic old bands to the stage for fans to see, and these bands are still together playing hit songs from their era. The whole area was filled with fans of the Queen of Country music, Shania Twain. Twain is starting her very anticipated tour with her new music at Stagecoach, and no one was disappointed. Twain came on stage in lacy clear leggings over short shorts. She is as beautiful as always even after being gone from the country scene for so long. A couple of other superstars joined her on stage for a song; Heartthrob Nick Jonas and country personage Kelsea Ballerinias; I heard from Luke Burland. Her first song had a

lot of Pyro-technics as she sang Rock This Country which she did, Rock the Stagecoach Stage. Other performers on the Mane Stage before Twain were Brett Eldredge, Kip Moore, Dan & Shay, Marin Morris and more. Palomino stage offered music by Willie Nelson, Jamey Johnson, Tommy James and Photo by Jose Negrete ©Stagecoach 2017 the Shondells, Margo Price and lots more. Of course, the Mustang stage was also filled with more musicians with a variety of music styles, and the fans filled both Palomino and Mustang tents all night. Some fans decided to spend some time in the Craft Beer area where they could sit and watch the performances on a large TV screen hoisted into the air. Dancing fans would head to the HonkyTonk tent to do line dancing and more. Something for everyone at Stagecoach.

SUNDAY Story and Photos by Pat Krause Sunday was the final day of Stagecoach, and it proved to be a great event again this year. Sunday afternoon the Palomino Tent was filled with well-known and loved singers. The early afternoon saw actor Kiefer Sutherland, and his band play some of his original songs. He said he was excited to play his music in front of such a large audience, and it topped everything else for

him. His fans filled the tent to be able to hear this renown actor and now singer. One of his songs was about someone he loved that was gone too soon. He has a good voice and plays a mean guitar. He was followed on the Palomino Stage by The Long Riders. The Country legend star and the original part of the Judds played in the Palomino tent at 4:45. She too filled the tent to overflowing. band The Big Noise brought the fans to cheering her as she stepped on stage. She joked at one point she forgot the words but the fans were singing along and helped her. Her husky voice had garnered millions of fans and sold millions of records. The next band on the Palomino Stage was Los Lobos. I saw a lot of people dancing to the music in the back in the tent. Fans really got to the music when they sang La Bamba. Everyone was cheering May 3, 2017

and moving with the music. The final artist in Palomino tent was another countrywestern star, Travis Tritt. Fans seem to love these artists who have made a name for themselves for years from the country scene. Many fans opted to see these stars rather than going to the Mane Stage for the newer artists. The Mustang Stage also had some well-

known blue grass bands like the Steep Canyon Rangers and Cowboy Junkies. The audiences have every kind of music to see and here. The HonkyTonk had DJs of renown for those that wanted to dance or be in an air-conditioned tent. The Top Country artist’s fans filled the Mane Stage area when Kenny Chesney came onto the stage. But, the tendency in American playwriting has been driven by economics. So, you have a lot of three, four, and five person plays. That’s the only kind of play that can get produced. What kind of story can you tell about the world with five people? What are the advantages to training your actors in the Commedia dell’ Arte style of acting? Robbins: It’s a blessing to have a group of actors trained in a certain way as you develop a short hand. On the first day of rehearsal, they are up on their feet with scripts in their hands. It’s like we are in the fourth week of rehearsal. It also eliminates discussions where an actor might say, ‘I’m not feeling this moment.’ You can talk and talk but ultimately our esthetic is just get on stage and show me what you’re talking about. Make a different choice but be bold. Dare to fail. This is the only way you’ll make discoveries. Do a lot of actors who fail to learn this stylized,

We tell people when they start classes that this might not be for you. We ask that they give it a shot once a week for eight weeks. We make a contract that if it doesn’t work for them, that they leave this theatre with the same love of theatre they had when they came in. I’ve seen great actors fail at this training and I’ve seen people who weren’t actors nail it. It’s about leaving your bag of tricks behind - the stuff that made you able to play leads in plays in various theatres. We operate on a different level. We are interested in an ensemble and not anything that is star driven. When you’re working this intensely with people, you can really see the destructive nature of what a diva or an asshole can do to a piece. Our success has to do with mutual generosity that people share on stage. In the training you learn that you can make yourself better by

making other people better. Emotional honesty is absolutely important; otherwise it’s just histrionics and is unwatchable. Do performances vary from night to night? Robbins: Every evening is going to be different. You’re not going to be able to assemble the same people that were in this theatre last night as each audience has its own chemistry which is affected by whatever happens in their daily lives. Each audience deserves its own show. Part of the trap of live theatre gets into is “we just had a killer show, let’s do that again.” When you try to do that, it just doesn’t happen. Is there any validly in actors blaming the audience for a bad performance? Robbins: Never assume anyone in the audience had enough money to buy this ticket and assume because of that, they walked five miles to get here because they couldn’t afford a bus. That’s the respect you owe an audience. You never want to hear that Continues on Page 14

By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho – Tax Day has come and gone, which means people are receiving their tax refunds. It also means it’s high season for scams. An IRS scam has been sweeping the nation recently, with fraudsters calling victims and demanding that they owe the tax agency money. Cheryl Tussey, who has worked with AARP Idaho on fraud prevention and education for two decades, says seniors are especially vulnerable to these scams. She shares her number one rule when it comes to tax scams. “The IRS will never call you,” she emphasizes. “It’s so important that people

understand that. They do not call. They will contact you by mail first if there’s a problem. They do not call you. And if folks can remember that, they can just hang up.” Tussey says scams are especially prevalent from January through the end of May. She stresses that people should never give out personal information over the phone and should shred any documents with sensitive information on them rather than simply throwing them away. Tussey has heard many heart-wrenching stories of seniors, often on fixed incomes, who have been defrauded out of thousands of dollars. Identity theft is common throughout the year. So are

other scams, such as the socalled “grandparent scam,” where a thief calls and pretends a person’s grandchild is in jail and in need of bail money. Tussey says these scams persist in new iterations and may never go away. “I don’t believe we’ll ever be able to stop the initiation of old and new scams and frauds, but we can decrease the number of victims via these education opportunities,” she states. AARP Idaho holds events free to the public called Scam Jams across the state where speakers, such as Tussey and state officials, offer tips on how to avoid scams and frauds. The next Scam Jam is at the College of Idaho in Caldwell on May 25.

the Syrian province of Homs on April 6 in retaliation for an assault on a rebel-held town in north-western Idlib province on April, 4, that was allegedly carried out by Syrian government forces with the use of chemical weapons. The US attack was carried out before any expert investigations were launched. After the airstrikes on the airfield, Trump, who was expected to depart from the policies of Obama’s administration and take a milder stance toward Russia, declared that relations between the two countries “may be at an all-time low.” At the same time, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley condemned Moscow

for supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad. North Korea has drawn an angry response from its regional neighbors and the US after several test firings of ballistic missiles hailed by the state media as major military achievements. Tensions between the two nations increased after President Trump said he would seek to stop North Korea from developing a nuclear weapon and missile

tests. As part of this plan, the US anti-missile THAAD system was stationed in South Korea aimed at deterring its northern neighbor. The system has been announced “operational” just recently. Moscow has condemned the move, urging Washington and Seoul to reconsider this decision, saying that THAAD anti-missile system would serve as a “destabilizing factor” in the region.

By Desert Star Staff Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, held a phone call in which they have agreed to cooperate on promoting diplomatic progress in dealing with tensions on the Korean peninsula and in Syria, according to the Kremlin. “Vladimir Putin has called for restraint and decreasing of the level of tensions” on the Korean peninsula, the statement said. “It has been agreed to work jointly on a diplomatic solution that will settle the crisis.” Putin and Trump have spoken about coordinating Russia’s and US efforts aimed against terrorism in Syria, the statement adds.Putin and Trump have decided to “activate the dialogue between www.desertstarweekly.com

This means that Russia’s foreign minister and the US secretary of state would inform their leaders about progress in this regard.” The call between the two presidents came a day before a new round of talks on Syria in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana. This is the first time that Trump and Putin have talked to each other since the US missile strike on a Syrian airfield that set back USRussia diplomatic relations. A groundbreaking album from The Zombies and a beloved instrumental tribute to the music of The Monkees have both been reissued on the occasion of their respective 50th anniversaries while pioneering ensemble Gorillaz is back with a new genre-busting studio collection. In addition, a celebrated soundtrack from the dawn of the 1980s is available for the first time ever on CD.

Now The Zombies’ greatest album has been reissued in lavish fashion; the seminal “Odessey & Oracle - 50th Anniversary” is available on both audio CD and vinyl. The terrific reissue was remastered from the best original sources available and the expanded edition includes seven bonus tracks (a mix of alternate versions and outtakes from the original recording sessions); additionally there are new liner notes and previouslyunreleased photos all adding

Tim Robbins Gives a Brief Primer on Theatre Parallels On Indentured Servants Continued from Page 12

an audience sucked. No. You sucked. You didn’t meet them. You didn’t find a way to tell them a story. Because of our discipline and approach, which is how do we make this immediate and great right now for these people, we rarely have an off night. What was the reaction when you took this play to Italy? Robbins: Imagine my nerve to bring our style to Italy last summer. But, it went great and the Italian critics really got the connection between Black Lives Matter and were really grateful for the reminder of the roots of Commedia dell’ Arte. What is very compelling about your work is your political views, which you very delicately infuse into the work without it becoming diatribe. Could you talk a bit about some of your other works and your point of view in particular?

Robbins: Our mission was to embrace a different kind of theatre. Our first play “Ubu the King,” was a scatological, surrealist play from 1902 about this megalomaniac named Ubu, and addressed the relationship between power and the truth. It spoke to the times we were living in, which were the early Reagan years, where we saw selfishness and lack of compassion for marginalized groups. Over the past ten years I’ve been thinking a lot about what enslavement or indentured servitude is. We did this play called “Break the Whip,” which was about Jamestown. We spoke three languages – English, Lenape, an original native language, and the West African Kimbundu. The first laws passed in the colony were about fraternization. It was illegal for the white indentured servants to talk to the Indians. Why? Because they knew they would have more in common with them than with the aristocrats they were working for. So, immediately there

were defections. These were pretty hardcore indentured servants, not only English, but other countries, and they could survive in the wilderness, compared to famine and malnutrition that was happening in the Jamestown colony. I’ve been thinking a lot about indentured servants and what was the difference between them and the African slaves who came eight years later. (History note to Dr. Ben Carson: They didn’t arrive as immigrants, but were brought over against their will in chains.) How is that germane to today? Robbins: If you look at today, college students graduate are in debt that they won’t be able to pay off for twenty or thirty years. At the same time they’re graduating with that student debt, the credit card companies give them cards. Now you’re able to buy stuff because you’re an adult. Or, are you working every day because if you don’t go to work, you will go bankrupt and you could go to jail. What’s the difference between that college graduate and the person who made the deal to do the transatlantic journey as a white indentured servant? He had to work for Tim Robbins ten years in order to get his freedom, all under the rules of the master. 1 victim & suspect dead, 6 critical in San Diego pool-party shooting

At least one woman is dead and six people are in critical condition after a man opened fire at a poolside party at an apartment complex in San Diego, California, according to the local police chief. Police confronted the gunman and fatally shot him while he was trying to reload his weapon. The suspect has been identified. The incident happened 6.10pm local time at the La Jolla Crossroads Apartments in La Jolla, California, when a white male wearing brown shorts and armed with a gun started shooting those at the pool. According to witness reports, the man was holding a beer in one hand and brandishing a gun in the other when he opened fire. San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said eight people were injured. “There were eight victims

that were transported, and we had four of the victims were African-American females who were suffering from gunshot wounds that were taken to area hospitals, two AfricanAmerican males were taken to an area hospital suffering from gunshot wounds, one Hispanic male suffering from a gunshot wound taken to an area hospital, and then one African-American male fleeing the area broke his arm when he was fleeing the gunfire,” Zimmerman said. One woman later died at the hospital, while six other victims remain in critical condition, according to Zimmerman. A police helicopter reached the scene shortly after the emergency call and officers saw the man reloading his weapon, according to Zimmerman. Three police officers then arrived and confronted the gunman. After an exchange

The gunman has been identified as 49-yearold local resident named Peter Selis, the police chief said. The motive behind the shooting remained unknown. “We are interviewing witnesses and, at this point,

we don’t know what the motive is for this shooting,” Zimmerman said. Witnesses said the group, which was apparently targeted by the shooter, appeared to have been celebrating a birthday party at the pool area. This is truly a horrific act of

violence that took place here today,” the city’s mayor, Kevin Faulconer, told reporters. “Our entire city, all of our thoughts and prayers, all San Diegans’ thoughts and prayers, are with the victims and their families tonight,” he said.

Are Marijuana Dispensaries Attracting More Crime?

KMIR Vince Marino Cathedral City, CA -The marijuana industry is growing here in the Coachella Valley and promises to bring big bucks into city coffers. But after a medical marijuana dispensary was robbed in Cathedral City Wednesday night, some people are wondering if the marijuana boom will bring more crime than cash. No Wait Meds was robbed last night at gun point. Thankfully no one was hurt but last nights incident serves as a reminder that more money could lead to more problems. The two men who robbed the dispensary last night were able to get access to the facility while people were shuffling in and out, even though the dispensary has three different doors that customers have to be buzzed through. The two suspects got away with an undisclosed amount of cash and marijuana. One of the suspects was arrested Thursday while the other is still at large. The question is, as more and more marijuana dispensaries pop up in Cathedral City, could

Certainly that is the concern, that it brings that element to our city. And we’re doing whatever we can to prevent anything like this from happening with security measures to discourage anybody wanting to do this. Ultimately

there are people who are going to do it regardless of what measures you put out,” said Commander Julio Luna of the Cathedral City Police Department. Marijuana dispensaries are beefing up their security. Things like surveillance cameras and secured entry are standard, but some dispensaries are now employing armed security guards.

Cathedral City Police Chief George Crum said this is the first time a medical marijuana dispensary was robbed in the city. He went on to say that it’s too early to tell whether the increase in dispensaries will lead to an increase in crime, but it’s clear this won’t be the last robbery of a dispensary like this one in the city. It’s an issue that’s not going to away. Source: KMIR

Black Americans still 30% worse off than whites

By Desert Star Staff Overall prosperity for Black and Latino Americans still lags 20-30 percent behind whites, according to the National Urban League annual report. There were slight increases, however in education and healthcare but still less than for whites. Among the findings, African Americans made gains over the past year with increased access to healthcare, which grew from 79.4 percent in 2016 to 80 percent in 2017, as well as education from 77.4 percent in 2016 to 78.2 percent in 2017, with a higher percentage of blacks receiving associate’s degrees compared to whites at 100 percent. “While the Obama years were no panacea for America’s long-standing racial inequalities, they

DESERT HOT SPRINGS

were a steady climb toward improvement,” the report said. The equality index measures quality of life in terms of economic, health, education, social justice and civic engagement, according to the report.African American’s economic prosperity only improved slightly with a gain of 0.3 percent, from 56.2 percent in 2016 to 56.5 percent in 2017, with a boost in black women’s earnings, and growth in the percentage of black-owned businesses. Hispanic Americans come in at 62.1 percent. “The data side of the report pretty much covers the Obama years,” Marc Morial, CEO National Urban League Morial told USA Today. “Things improved economically from an education standpoint and

in terms of health disparities, not in a fashion that we would have liked but certainly in a very important way.”The report said the gains in health and education were overshadowed by a decline in social justice equality between blacks and whites, which dropped from 60.9 percent in 2016 to 57.4 percent in 2017. African Americans were found to have experienced an increase in incarceration after an arrest, and whites posted a greater decline than black in terms of their likelihood of being the victim of a violent crime. There were gains made in education and health under Obama but threats to cuts government programs under the incoming Trump administration have advocates worried the gains will be lost. May 3, 2017

“Recent proposals before Congress would shift desperately needed resources away from underfunded public schools towards our heavily-invested-in military,” Marc Morial, CEO of the National Urban League, said in a statement. Morial said proposed federal budgets cuts would slash the budgets for the Departments of Health, Education, Housing and Labor. “A blueprint for a sick, uneducated, homeless and unemployed America. Suggested double-digits cuts, or the outright elimination of funding for vital programs and services, would devastate already vulnerable citizens and working families.”The report is released as the the Trump administration in its first budget blueprint for fiscal 2018 has called for a nearly 18 percent cut, or a loss of $15.1 billion in programs, for the Department of Health and Human Services for its next year. Trump would also cut $4.2 billion in grants the federal government provides to communities to assist the poor, including the decadesold Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which helps low-income Americans with their heating bills. And the budget would slash more than $400 million in training programs for nurses and other health professionals, which the Trump administration said are ineffective.

A.R. Gurney’s Comedy “Later Life” now on stage at CV Rep By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Playwright A.R. Gurney examines life’s missed opportunities and second chances squanderd when it comes to the game of love and loss for players of a certain age in his 1993 bittersweet, comedy play “Later Life” that opened last Friday at CV Rep Theatre in Rancho Mirage, CA. Gurney, one of the most prolific playwrights and writers of the 20th century – more than forty-five plays, four novels, and two screenplays – can still entertain and please an audience with his sophisticated, ‘old school, East Coast style’ of biting wit, that imbue many of his plays. “Love Letters”, written in 1988, is one of his most compelling, poignant and popular plays, is still a favorite with regional and community theatres. Gurney is considered the master when it comes to the skewering of the WASP culture of snobbishness, stuffiness, privilege and New England elitism. “Later Life” is the final production in CV Rep Theatre’s 2016/2017 season of plays that follows the Equity Theatre’s 2017 theme of presenting plays that are about “Love, Marriage and Life Changing Events”. Next season Artistic director Ron Celona will present his audiences with a new theme, which will be announced later this year. The production, nicely helmed by guest director Luke Yankee, features four highly talented performers, who know their way around sophisticated, funny and poignant comedy plays and moments when they find themselves on stage in one. Gurney’s story revolves around the meeting of two people who only met once thirty years ago. Austin (William Fair), does not remember meeting Ruth (Barbara Niles) when he was a young Naval Officer

attending a party. Ruth, on the other hand, vividly remembers the encounter which she thought had a promising future. Austin has spent his entire life convinced that something terrible is bound to happen to him – and he’s still waiting for it to happen. One night, at a party, overlooking Boston harbor, Austin meets Ruth at a party arranged by friends in the hope that the two might reconnect. Austin’s personal baggage now includes being a divorced man, along with a medical history that sports a therapist and pills to ease his depression and withdrawal from life’s speed bumps. Ruth, on the other hand, has managed to shed three husbands over the years. Both are flawed and wounded souls. Their mutual friends look to Austin as Ruth’s last chance at a semblance of normalcy. The trouble is that Austin is a Freudian delight in his own right. He’s introverted and rife with more personal tics and mannerisms than a clock. Besides, arranged meetings by well-intentioned friends rarely end up as “made in heaven” pairings. But hope springs eternal. In addition to the tall and handsome Mr. Fair and the beautiful Ms. Niles, this fun romp is also blessed with gifted actors Teri Bibb and Joel Bryant who play multiple characters as party guests. Bryant as one character, forced me to check my program to see who this fifth actor was in this four actor cast. These potential scene-stealing actors deliver many nuanced comedy moments. Ms. Bibb is on the nose with her distinct Bryn Mawr-accented delivery so reminiscent of Kathryn Hepburn. Also, Mr. Bryant along with Ms. Bibb shine as a bickering New York husband and wife, among other poignant and comedic vignette gems: like a married Southern couple with home-spun wisdom and humor trying to convince Austin and Ruth that conjugal life is a

William Fair, Barbara Niles, Joel Bryant and Teri Bibb. Photo by Jim Cox ball. There was a lot resonance and laughs taking place in the audience on opening night. It’s amazing how the performing talent plus the artistry of the creative team led by director Yankee, grabs the audience and makes the on stage magic spring to life. The stunning set design by resident award-winning design wizard Jimmy Cuomo, dishes up one of his best designs with a large, sparkling recessed terraced interior room, with a view of Boston’s

famous harbor that is cleverly lighted by award-winning lighting designer and Technical Director Moira Wilke Whitaker. The gorgeous eye-popping gowns and costumes created by Aalsa L. Lee, and Hair, and makeup designed by Lynda Shaeps and Selene Rodriguez, is the icing on this splendid visual cake of a comedy production. The Sound design by Terence Davis, complete with harbor boat horns and background cocktail party noise, is

nicely woven into the play’s narrative moments lending the production its overall verisimilitude of Boston at night. “Later Life”, is an enjoyable evening in the theatre that will bring audiences back for CV Rep’s ninth season beginning in the Fall. The production is performed without an intermission (approximately 85 minutes) and runs through May 21st. For reservations call the box office at 760-296-2966. Be sure to catch a performance, you won’t be disappointed.
