We Are Not Alone
By Jackie Devereaux Joshua Tree, CA – Have you ever wondered about UFOs? Ever think about intelligent life somewhere out there in the Universe? Maybe we are not alone? If you want to explore those deep philosophical questions, then head to the 2017 Contact in the Desert convention held
May 18-22 at the Institute of Mentalphysics where UFO researchers, contactees and thousands of fans will converge for the annual conference slated with the History Channel’s panel of experts from their Ancient Aliens television series. According to recent polls, approximately 50
percent of adults believe in UFOs and extraterrestrials. Main stream scientists and UFO researchers have been battling each other over this issue since the Roswell, New Mexico incident in July 1947. And the UFO issue appears to be in the news more and more with sightings photographed and videotaped
KMIR News Stuff Palm Desert, CA -On Friday, April 28 at approximately 9:30 am, The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens welcomed a male giraffe calf to the herd - born to mother, Tuli, and father, Hesabu. The yet-to-benamed male calf, weighs in at 185.9 pounds and stands 6 feet 3 inches tall. The calf is the largest giraffe born at The Living Desert. “We are so excited to share the wonderful news of our new addition. Mother and calf are bonding and doing very well,” said Allen Monroe, President/CEO of The Living Desert. “Every birth is special,
and this giraffe birth is a fulfilling part of our mission, since Tuli and Hesabu were brought to The Living Desert based on Species Survival Plan recommendations.”This is the second calf for Tuli, and eighth calf for Hesabu – their first calf together, Ayo, was born July 2, 2015. Tuli is 6 years old and came to The Living Desert in 2013 from the San Diego Wild Animal Park. Hesabu is 16 years old and has lived at The Living Desert since 2002. “Tuli and her calf are doing very well. The well-baby exam on April 29, showed that all his vitals are within the normal range, and he is progressing
as expected,” said Dr. Kevin Leiske, Veterinarian of The Living Desert. The Living Desert is now home to a herd of eight giraffe, six males and two females. The calf will continue to bond with mom behind-the-scenes, and his exhibit debut will be announced soon. Giraffe gestation is about 15 months. The calf will now nurse for nine to 12 months, and begin eating foliage at about four months. The giraffe will double his size in the first year of his life. Giraffes have their own individual spot-like markings and no two giraffe have

The Mayor of Palm Springs, Rob Moon, is supporting the CV Link but with changes. “I’m concerned about the portion KMIR Angela Monroe a gift, extra miles means cyclists that’s in the very northern part of Palm Springs, what CV Link is a proposed 50- can come to the area and I’m recommending is that mile path meant to connect stay within the city and not be the desert, but it is proving going down valley somewhere,” we defer that portion to the next phase,” said Moon. to be a divisive topic. said president of Friends of Other councilmembers “They should look at this as CV Link, Gary Lueders.

We’ve filmed it with third generation night vision and see a giant light pyramid,” Gilliland said in a recent telephone interview. “I’ve had contact with quite a few beings.” “We have low-level contacts with the Greys and Reptilians. It’s best to avoid contact with them. The benevolent ones are better to work with. Some are tall, some short, the blue-skinned ones come from a copper base, they’re feline beings, and others,” he added, noting there are 12 different star nations involved in the Earth’s and human evolution. “We’ve been colonized several times. Our poles have shifted, meteorites have hit the planet, the sun’s cycles and flares, the volcanic eruptions” all have reformed and evolved the planet. “We were (originally) terraformed by the Pleiadeans, then taken over by the Reptilians. The
Pleiades (star system) has more genetic stock here than any other race.” Luckily, they are back to reclaim Earth with the emanating frequency of love, he said. Gilliland has a wide collection of photos and videos from his ranch with solid documentation and highlevel testimonies to prove his claims. The physics is there to back it up, and the science is there to back it up. If we change consciousness, we can change the physical world in which we live. “NASA scientists, Boeing and Lockheed (aircraft) engineers have come here and witnessed the UFOs,” he said. “They appeared in the press on Coast-toCoast radio, and told what “they saw for themselves.” Seeing UFOs and communing with ETs are not new experiences for Gilliland,

As kids, we’d sleep outside in the high desert, and see ships all the time.” In addition to running ECETI, Gilliland is a best-selling author, internationally-known lecturer, minister, counselor, and multiple Near-Death Experiencer. don’t connect to that plan. “I support having a true CV Link, if we get rid of the north side of the CV Link, we don’t have a link, it defeats the whole purpose of the project,” said Councilman Geoff Kors. Construction started in Cathedral City last month, but not all city’s will be linked together as Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells are raising objections. The spearhead of the project, Coachella Valley Association of Governments, has faced resistance to the proposal. “We’ll even consider the option of leaving the city of Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells out, and allowing bikers to continue using Highway 111 and Fred Waring, which frankly, I don’t think is the safest approach, but it is an option we can go with,” said CVAG Executive Director, Tom Kirk.
Many people spoke up at city council for and against. “We’ve objected to where they’ve got their money from, the people that are using are not the same people who are paying for it,” said Bob Terry with a group called People Over Pollution. “I speak in favor of the CV Link, all 16 miles of it within the city of Palm Springs and all 50 miles of it in the Coachella valley,” said Palm Springs resident, Rick Burgs. Palm Springs city council decided in favor of the CV Link -- all of it -- to a path that may have a few missing links. On May 15th, the Coachella Valley Association of Governments will be holding a meeting at Palm Desert City Hall. They will be proposing a final route which may not include Rancho Mirage or Indian Wells. Source: KMIR

‘The Legend of Georgia McBride’ --A Cheerful Comedy Told in Drag
In “The Legend of Georgia McBride,” the sweet, endearing Casey (Andrew Burnap), an Elvis impersonator by trade, doesn’t discover true acting success until he takes on the persona of a woman. As the story begins he is a happy-go-lucky guy who barely earns enough money to pay the rent as an Elvis impersonator in a seedy dive in Panama City, Florida called Cleo’s. His irresponsible, yet totally lovable ways are a source of deep concern to his wife Jo (Nija Okoro) when the rent check bounces

because Casey had to buy a Papa John’s Pizza and their fragile bank account couldn’t handle both charges. He manages to get her to smile by snuggling and rubbing her feet, but things go really bad when she tells him they are going to have a baby. He is overjoyed, but before he can tell Eddie, his boss (Nick Searcy), he’s fired. The reason? Eddie’s cousin, a flamboyant drag queen named Miss Tracy Mills (Matt McGrath) has come to Florida and Eddie has promised him (her) his own show. As part of her act Miss Tracy Mills works with another drag queen, Miss Rexy (Larry Powell, who also plays Casey’s landlord, Jason). When Miss Tracy learns that Casey will have no job she gets her cousin Eddie to keep him on as a bartender. Soon the club finds an audience and begins to prosper but at this point Miss Rexy, after drinking too much vodka, collapses and now there is a need for another drag queen to take his (her) place. Skillfully Miss Tracy gets a very, very reluctant Casey to step in as, of all singers, Edith Piaf. Casey has never heard of Piaf and becomes ever more upset when he is told he must lip-sync in French. How Miss Tracy shows him the secret of mouthing a song in French is hilarious. She gives him a slightly naughty saying to constantly repeat and it works. We were sitting in the third row so I could read Casey’s lips mouthing the saying as Edith’s voice spilled out into the audience. The results were hilarious and it was at this point that this odd, but very clever little comedy really came to life. Much of the fun comes from the varied, imaginative costumes the two men leap in and out of which were created by costume designer E.B. Brooks. And the choreography by Paul McGill is also a hoot. One of the funniest song combinations is performed by Matt Mc Grath as Miss Tracy. He mouths a long string of Broadway songs from “Les Miserables” to “Gypsy.” Each selection is short and sweet, about 16 bars, as the drag diva jumps, spins and does high kicks. The results are side-splitting. And as soon as she darts off to quick change, out comes the country sweetheart Miss Georgia McBride in another sexy, revealing outfit. Soon, and much to his surprise, Casey has become a drag sensation at the club and he is able to bring in lots of cash from all the money he generates in tips from
Andrew Burnap and Matt McGrath. Photo by Jeff Lorch Photography. the audience. His paycheck has also vastly improved. Another clever aspect of this show is is how Eddie announces the different shows at Cleo’s for the various holidays ranging from Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s Day to St Patrick’s Day. Soon Casey is making big bucks, but his wife still thinks it’s because of his bartending skills. What could or will happen if she finds out? “The Legend of Georgia

A.R. Gurney’s Comedy “Later Life” now on stage at CV Rep By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Playwright A.R. Gurney examines life’s missed opportunities and second chances squanderd when it comes to the game of love and loss for players of a certain age in his 1993 bittersweet, comedy play “Later Life” that opened last Friday at CV Rep Theatre in Rancho Mirage, CA. Gurney, one of the most prolific playwrights and writers of the 20th century – more than forty-five plays, four novels, and two screenplays – can still entertain and please an audience with his sophisticated, ‘old school, East Coast style’ of biting wit, that imbue many of his plays. “Love Letters”, written in 1988, is one of his most compelling, poignant and popular plays, is still a favorite
with regional and community theatres. Gurney is considered the master when it comes to the skewering of the WASP culture of snobbishness, stuffiness, privilege and New England elitism. “Later Life” is the final production in CV Rep Theatre’s 2016/2017 season of plays that follows the Equity Theatre’s 2017 theme of presenting plays that are about “Love, Marriage and Life Changing Events”. Next season Artistic director Ron Celona will present his audiences with a new theme, which will be announced later this year. The production, nicely helmed by guest director Luke Yankee, features four highly talented performers, who know their way around sophisticated, funny and poignant comedy plays and moments when they find themselves on stage in one. Gurney’s story revolves
Barbara Niles and William Fair. Photo by Jim Cox
William Fair, Barbara Niles, Joel Bryant and Teri Bibb. Photo by Jim Cox around the meeting of two people who only met once thirty years ago. Austin (William Fair), does not remember meeting Ruth (Barbara Niles) when he was a young Naval Officer attending a party. Ruth, on the other hand, vividly remembers the encounter which she thought had a promising future. Austin has spent his entire life convinced that something terrible is bound to happen to him – and he’s still waiting for it to happen. One night, at a party, overlooking Boston harbor, Austin meets Ruth at a party arranged by friends in the hope that the two might reconnect. Austin’s personal baggage now includes being a divorced man, along with a medical history that sports a therapist and pills to ease his depression and withdrawal from life’s speed bumps. Ruth, on the other hand, has managed to shed three husbands over the years. Both are flawed and wounded souls. Their mutual friends look to Austin as Ruth’s last chance at a semblance of normalcy. The trouble is that Austin is a Freudian delight in his own right. He’s introverted and rife with more personal tics and mannerisms than a clock. Besides, arranged
meetings by well-intentioned friends rarely end up as “made in heaven” pairings. But hope springs eternal. In addition to the tall and handsome Mr. Fair and the beautiful Ms. Niles, this fun romp is also blessed with gifted actors Teri Bibb and Joel Bryant who play multiple characters as party guests. Bryant as one character, forced me to check my program to see who this fifth actor was in this four actor cast. These potential scene-stealing actors deliver many nuanced comedy moments. Ms. Bibb is on the nose with her distinct Bryn Mawr-accented delivery so reminiscent of Kathryn Hepburn. Also, Mr. Bryant along with Ms. Bibb shine as a bickering New York husband and wife, among other poignant and comedic vignette gems: like a married Southern couple with home-spun wisdom and humor trying to convince Austin and Ruth that conjugal life is a ball. There was a lot resonance and laughs taking place in the audience on opening night. It’s amazing how the performing talent plus the artistry of the creative team led by director Yankee, grabs the audience and makes the on stage magic spring to life. The stunning set design
by resident award-winning design wizard Jimmy Cuomo, dishes up one of his best designs with a large, sparkling recessed terraced interior room, with a view of Boston’s famous harbor that is cleverly lighted by award-winning lighting designer and Technical Director Moira Wilke Whitaker. The gorgeous eye-popping gowns and costumes created by Aalsa L. Lee, and Hair, and makeup designed by Lynda Shaeps and Selene Rodriguez, is the icing on this splendid visual cake of a comedy production. The Sound design by Terence Davis, complete with harbor boat horns and background cocktail party noise, is nicely woven into the play’s narrative moments lending the production its overall verisimilitude of Boston at night. “Later Life”, is an enjoyable evening in the theatre that will bring audiences back for CV Rep’s ninth season beginning in the Fall. The production is performed without an intermission (approximately 85 minutes) and runs through May 21st. For reservations call the box office at 760-296-2966. Be sure to catch a performance, you won’t be disappointed.
Coachella Valley Schools Screening Project By Desert Star Staff Irlen Syndrome is a visual processing challenge affecting 15% of the general population and nearly 50% of struggling readers. If left unaddressed, it can result in academic struggles and low self-esteem that can follow a student into adulthood. Fortunately, Irlen Syndrome is easy to address and remediate, if it is properly identified through formal screenings. Because of the large financial investment required to screen all students in public schools, Academic Solutions USA, in coordination with the Irlen Syndrome Foundation, is raising money to bring screenings for Irlen

Hiking Trails to Remain Open During Summer
KMIR Vince Marino Over the years several hikers have gone up hiking trails, but never came back down. Despite signs that warn hikers of their responsibility, the signs are not
enough to save their lives. The only way a trail can be closed is if the property owner or owners decide to close it and that can get complicated. While many of the trails begin on city property, some trails
belong to the Bureau of Land Management. Other trails or portions of the trail could belong to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians or private land owners. Although several hikers die every year
from the heat, the trails are set to remain open this summer. “As far as I know there is no real interest or movement towards closing trails for safety unless there were a fire or something like that,” said Colin Barrows, a conservation coordinator with Friends of the Desert Mountains. In Palm Desert, the bump and grind trail sits on public land and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. They have no plans to close the trails, as doing so would require a change in municipal codes. Meanwhile hikers like George Guzman say they know what they’re doing, “I think people should know their own limits. It’s common sense. If you can’t really run in this temperature, you shouldn’t do it.”
Anytime a hiker is rescued, tax payers end up footing the bill. Signage does warn hikers that they could be responsible for paying for a rescue, but Cal Fire said today that they have to prove a hiker was negligent in order to bill them for the rescue. Sometimes that can be difficult to do. “I did cross country all my years in high school so I’m used to the heat,” said hiker Ivan Magana. If you are thinking about doing some hiking this summer, know your limits. Cal Fire advises that hikers stay hydrated. That means a quart of water per person, per hour. You should also avoid hiking alone. If you do hike alone, wear light and bright clothes and let someone know where you are going and when you should be back. Source: KMIR
Border Patrol Agents Seize Heroin, Meth, and Cash in Arrest
KMIR News Staff Salton City, CA -El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station arrested a man suspected of smuggling narcotics and bulk cash Tuesday night. The incident occurred at approximately 8 p.m., when a silver 2003 Honda Accord coupe was travelling in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near Eagle Mountain Road. Agents patrolling in the area performed a vehicle stop based on their observations. During the vehicle stop, agents interviewed the driver. Further observations by agents led to a request for a Border Patrol detection canine team to perform a canine sniff of the vehicle. The canine subsequently alerted to the
rear part of the vehicle. Agents conducted a thorough search of the Honda and discovered an aftermarket compartment built into the driver’s side rear quarter panel. Shortly thereafter, agents pulled 16 bundles of black tar heroin and 18 bundles of methamphetamine from the compartment. Upon further search of the vehicle, agents also discovered $18,000 in bulk cash. The methamphetamine had a total weight of 20.1 pounds with an estimated street value of $68,340. The heroin weighed a total of 20.6 pounds with an estimated street value of $226,000. “This was great work by our agents discovering the narcotics and cash,”
said David S. Kim Assistant Chief Patrol Agent. “These dangerous substances were intercepted and seizing the cash always hurts criminal enterprises’ bottom line.”
The man, a 27-year-old United States citizen, vehicle, currency and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
In fiscal year 2017, El Centro Sector has seized more than 683.35 pounds of methamphetamine and 116.41 pounds of heroin. Source: KMIR

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, - Inspired by this year’s Costume Institute exhibition Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, the H&M design team created one-ofa-kind looks that explored many of Kawakubo’s recurring themes. These included deconstruction, subverted tradition and asymmetry, mixed with the charm of bows, flowers and polka dots, with each look made especially for this exclusive evening of fashion. Attending the Costume Institute Benefit for the third year in a row, H&M was particularly pleased with this year’s theme having collaborated with Comme des Garçons for its 2008 H&M designer collection. “It has been our honor at H&M to create these looks inspired by Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garçons, one of fashion’s most important and influential designers. Each H&M look has been entirely custom-made, with both Kawakubo’s creative world and the style of our guests in mind,” said Pernilla Wohlfahrt, H&M’s Head of Design and Creative Director. “Partnering with H&M has been an incredible and unique experience. The look we have created is so special to me and I’m looking forward to sharing this moment with everyone. Together with the H&M design team, we embodied the theme;

Joe Jonas dress that played with the theme of deconstructing and subverting traditional garments. A top of off-white silk taffeta shirting appeared as if falling off a calico bodice, its skirt of deconstructed navy pinstripe suiting that was cut asymmetrically and into bows. Actress Sasha Lane wore a sheer net-like structured dress embellished with various sizes of polka dots, one of Kawakubo’s key motifs. The dress was held by a sheer, boned upper body with black Swarovski crystals, the playful dots in tactile materials
such as raffia and velvet. Singer Joe Jonas was dressed in a deep red slim fit suit in Italian double-silk satin with black stripe and lapels. His black silk shirt was in 100% organic silk, finished with a black bowtie. Model Stella Maxwell wore a sheer organic silk chiffon dress covered in strands of pearls. Beginning as a necklace that draped the open back, the pearls crossed the chest and formed the lines of a crinoline into the dress, before falling free to play around the body. www.desertstarweekly.com
