Shakti Fest Celebrates Creative Divine Feminine Energy Joshua Tree May 13 – 15 By Jackie Devereaux Joshua Tree, CA – If you like yoga, meditation and Kirtan music than Shakti Fest 2016 is for you. By Desert Star Staff Bud Light Music continued their quest to bring the people of America together by activating the second installment of their exciting lineup of Bud Light Music “Stage Moments” that took place during the Stagecoach Music Festival on April 29 in Indio, CA. Grammynominated and multi-platinum selling artist Sam Hunt electrified the crowd with an energetic performance mixing up Hip Hop and Country Music seamlessly
during his 55 minute set playing crowd favorite songs including, “Ex To See,” “Single For The Summer,” “Take Your Time,” and a cover of Drake’s hit, “Marvin’s Room.” Sam closed out the night by surprising the Stagecoach crowd bringing out Legendary Hip Hop artist Snoop Dogg, and chart-topping artists G-Eazy and Bebe Rexha. G-Eazy and Bebe Rexha kicked off the Bud Light Stage Moment performing their hit record, “Me, Myself and I,” followed by Snoop Dogg
joining them onstage to perform an amazing melody of “Next Episode” and “Drop it Like It’s Hot.” To close out his set, Sam joined all of the artists onstage to jam out to his hit song, “House Party.” Before the group left the stage, they posed for a group selfie amongst the thousands of excited fans in the crowd and encouraged them to “Raise One To Right Now” while toasting with cold Bud Light beers. By Jessica Martin, Mother Mother’s Day 2012 is a day our family will not soon forget. Leena and Brielle Martin were born at 25 weeks, after four weeks of hospital bed rest- they weighed just 1lb 12oz and 1lb 10oz. Both of our girls have been fighters from the very beginning. On several occasions, we were told to prepare for the worst, but both of our girls had continued to fight. They had a long, hard stay in the NICU that included nitric oxide therapy, laser eye surgery, nissen fundoplication, and gastronomy tube placement among many

other procedures. They fought through it all, enduring a 156-day stay at Kaiser Fontana; through the help of an amazing medical staff and the support of family and friends—we were finally able to bring our babies home. Watching the two of them grow has been our greatest joy. Since coming home, we have had some setbacks and are still reminded of their premature birth daily— due to their need to use G-tubes for nutrition. Although, we know our girls will continue overcome these obstacles just as the many others that have also been put in their paths.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The movie When Voices Meet held a special screening at the Mary Pickford Theatre in Cathedral City on April 27th. Actress Shari Belafonte contacted the Palm Springs Women in Film and Television, PSWIFT, about being a part of this documentary somewhat shot in 1992 in South Africa by Sharon Katz. PSWIFT was excited to agree to host this screening that was such an important event in the turbulent times of apartheid in South Africa. Sharon Katz brought together high-school students for a choir to tour South Africa starting in a city where

They started the “Peace Train” where Whites, Blacks, Coloured and Indian students all performed across the country. It was an effort to

Being Mindful of Mental Health in May By Desert Star Staff ST. PAUL, Minn. – Mental illness may be affecting more Minnesotans than you think, as health professionals say about 224,000 people receive mental health services in the state. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and it’s being used as a time to remember that those who are seeking treatment also may face social stigmas. Sue Abderholden, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Minnesota, says people may be afraid to tell their boss or employer that they’re suffering with depression or other serious mental health conditions. “I think their fear is that they won’t get a promotion, they won’t get a raise, that they will be fired for this,” she states. “The Americans with Disabilities Act actually does apply for someone with a mental illness. “ Abderholden says employers should make reasonable accommodations for workers who struggle with mental illness, but under the act they have to be notified first. This month, the alliance is hosting a series of events around the state to educate the public about mental illness and to build support for increasing services. The group is praising Gov. Mark Dayton’s budget proposal for including more funding for state-run mental health providers. Abderholden says such moves could help uncover untreated mental illnesses, which would cut down on health care
costs in the long run. “People wait an average of 10 years before seeking treatment,” she points out. “It’s just way too long. We know, generally speaking, in health care that the earlier
that you identify and treat something the better the outcomes, and the same is true for mental illnesses.” Abderholden also suggests that employers could train supervisors and

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Over 70,000 people enjoyed the 10th anniversary of Stagecoach; another year of diverse, and fantastic music in all its forms. The 3 days of entertainment are unparallel in this Valley. The Indio Polo Grounds is transformed from Coachella Fest Weekends into a country theme. The art works on the grounds is definitely geared to the country fans. There was a huge cowboy boot, that fans crowded around to get selfies. The very large Ferris Wheel can be seen all around the venue and is a way to find the entrance and Exits, the vendors and food booths. There was a long line of vendors selling beer and drinks and foods at one area and other vendors all over selling cowboy hats, belt buckles, removable tattoos, T-Shirts, and memorabilia. Everyone wants a memento of this weekend. Food Vendors sold just about anything from pizza to spring rolls, hot dogs, and everything in between. There were walkways for fans to get into one side or another or to one stage or another. The three stages, Mane, Palomino and Mustang were filled to hear every kind of artist. There was the traditional country, blue grass and a more hip kind of country for everyone’s taste. There were a lot of brand new artists, that are making news in the country scene. Goldenvoice does a great job in
finding the newest talent to highlight. Fans are finding new entertainers that are making their mark in the music world. I noticed there were a lot of younger people along with an older crowd at the more traditional country acts like, Marty Stuart, Emmy Lou Harris, John Fogarty, Lee Ann Womack and the Doobie Brothers. The senior country artists had the largest crowds in the Palomino and Mustang stages. The many fresh artists could be seen on all three stages during the day and creating brand new fans. STAGECOACH OFFERS WEALTH OF AMERICANA, COUNTRY AND ROCK MUSIC IN INDIO By Robert Kinsler If there was one thread that tied together many of performances that I caught at Stagecoach last weekend, it was the spirit of Merle Haggard. While a slew of the performances acknowledged Hag, who passed away April 6, 2016, there was ultimately an even deeper theme of honoring a range of musical heroes and acknowledging the large part that great music plays in the lives of those who journeyed to take in the sights and sounds at California largest country music festival. Here is an overview of the noteworthy performances I caught at the three-day festival, held April 29, 30 and May 1, 2016 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. Friday, April 29 While early Friday

performances from Leroy Powell and Aubrie Sellers were entertaining, the first top-tier performance came courtesy of the Malpass Brothers’ 45-minute play in the Palomino tent. The five-member troupe (headed by Christopher and Taylor Malpass) honored musical greats ranging from Hank Williams (a Western Swingflavored “Move It On Over”) and Johnny Cash (a buoyant “Folsom Prison Blues”) to Jimmie Rogers (“California Blues”) to Haggard (an emotive “Sing Me Back Home”). The Malpass Brothers closed their set with several songs rooted celebrating their heroes, including “Man in Black is Wearing White” (a fitting tribute to Johnny Cash). Just as strong was the appearance by Austinbased singer-songwriter
Dale Watson. Backed by a tight trio known as “His Lone Stars,” Watson paid tribute to honky tonk and authentic country music with every note, including the uptempo George Jones-honoring “Jonesin for Jones.” Armed with a rich baritone voice and sharp guitar licks, his 14-song set also featured the retro-styled original “Whiskey or God” and Haggard’s timeless country ballad “Here In Frisco.” Memphis country-punk outfit Lucero was a good fit to perform in the Palomino. Sandwiched in the middle of the previous traditional sets from the Malpass Brothers and Watson, and subsequent sets from legends Robert Earl Keen and Emmylou Harris, the band’s rollicking style was a welcome change of pace. Former Creedence Clearwater Revival singerguitarist John Fogerty packed the Palomino tent with his generous set filled with almost two dozen classics. After a fitting video tribute was shown focusing on the year 1969, including Fogerty’s band CCR and major events of the time, it was time for Fogerty to perform 75 minutes or so of classics (with a handful of new material). What isn’t to love about Fogerty and an amazing band (featuring drummer Kenny Aronoff) charging through some of the greatest rock songs of all

time; “Travelin’ Band,” “Green River,” “Lodi” and “Down on the Corner” for starters. And his folk rockers hold up nicely too (“Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” and “Who’ll Stop the Rain” in particular). A tremendous set to be sure. Sunday offered a continuing parade of eclectic choices, leading up to the entertaining festival-ending performance from the solidlyperforming rock legends the Doobie Brothers on the Palomino Stage and Luke Bryan on the Mane Stage. That day kicked off with a memorable 45-minute turn from songstress Ruthie
Collins on the Mane stage. A highlight in her set was a cover of John Denver’s hit “Take Me Home, Country Roads” and her own breezy country-pop song “Ready to Roll.” Singer-songwriter William Elliott Whitmore performed a solo set accompanied by his banjo, bringing plenty of wry lyrics to the Mustang Stage. “Old Beer Jones” provided plenty of laughter, as did my favorite track, the poignant “Civilizations” off his “Radium Death” disc. Other highlights that welcomed concertgoers May 6, 2016
on day 3 included a set of ‘80s hit singles and bona fide humor from American country singer Johnny Lee. The crowd that mostly filled the Palomino was singing along at full force for his 1983 hit “Hey Bartender” and most-beloved track, the 1980 crossover hit “Lookin’ for Love.” Several fantastic performances closed out the Mustang tent, including an inspired set from New Orleans’ the Deslondes, a group able to expertly blend blues, country, gospel and roots music together during
a winning 45-minute set. The infectious song titled “Less Honkin’ More Tonkin’,” tuneful “Louise” and propulsive “One of These Lonesome Mornings” were among the songs showcasing the group’s distinctive harmonies and original song craft. Stagecoach wouldn’t be the same without the inclusion of great bluegrass. The Earls of Leicester fully delivered the authentic sounds of bluegrass, genuinely putting new life into the genre via strong performances of “Big Black Train,” “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down” and the incredible “Dim Lights, Thick Smoke.” Headed by Dobro master Jerry Douglas, it was criminal more folks attending Stagecoach didn’t get over to catch the group before checking out the Doobie Brothers or Luke Bryan artists whose roots ultimately extend back to the style celebrated (at least, in part) by the Earls of Leicester.

‘Hamilton’ Garners 16 Tony Nominations
By Theda Kleinhans Reichman Lin-Manuel Miranda won the Pulitzer Prize and 2016 Grammy Award for best Best Broadway Musical Album this year. He now has the chance to take home an armload of Tony Awards for his sensational hip-hop Broadway smash-hit “Hamilton.” On Tuesday, May 3rd, when the Tony nominations were announced, the show also made Broadway history by garnering 16 Tony nominations. In the past Mel Brooks hit musical “The Producers” and Britain’s delightful “Billy Elliot” held that honor when they received 15 nominations. “The Producers” went on to win 12 Tonys; “Billy Elliot” took home 10. Will “Hamilton’ top ‘The Producers?” We shall see on June 12 when the awards are presented on CBS. The host will be CBS-TV’s “Late Late Show” host James Corden, who won a Tony in 2012. Annual Evening under the Stars Gala
Story and Photos by Pat Krause Hundreds of people filled the grounds at the O’Donnell Golf Course for the 23rd Annual Evening Under the Stars Gala on April 30th. The reception area was filled with everyone dressed to the nines. Drink stations were everywhere so there were no long lines waiting for refreshments. The Gala is a fundraiser for AIDS Assistance Program, AAP. The event is also a way to reward special people with humanitarian awards. The evening’s entertainment was by The Village People group. Honorees this year was Senator Barbara Boxer with the Jeanette Rockefeller Humanitarian Award who said she was retiring from the Senate at the end of this year but was still going to be a fighter for HIV/AIDS. Terri Ketover was given the Gloria Greene Inspiritation Award and said she wanted
to acknowledge her husband Bart as the biggest supporter in all that she does. Cathy MacNaughton received the Herb Lazenby Community Service Award and was thrilled with the award. Emcee Lily Tomlin was smiling and proud when she gave her partner Jane Wagner the Joanna Jakway Community Hero Award. AAP gave an inaugural award this year to Walgreens as a Corporate Angel Award for their years of support in the HIV/AIDS struggle. Guests were urged to bring their cell phones to the stage to welcome The Village People by taking photos and videos of the performance. As soon as the Village People came on stage the dance floor was filled with guests taking photos, moving with the music and some were trying to dance at the back of the dance floor. The Village People really know how to get the crowd on their feet to enjoy

The fund supports all the Arts, Film, TV, Music, Opera, Radio,
Theatre and Dance and that include those that work behind the scenes in the entertainment industry. The fund has many programs, including social services, financial assistance, health care, housing and so much more. The Actors Fund is a safety net for
the fun. They are a nationally well known group with hits like “Macho Man” and “YMCA” and are credited with bringing gay culture into the forefront. AAP not only helps people with HIV/AIDS but others with health issues, and most are low-income people. AAP has a variety of programs but mainly provides food so no one will go hungry. CEO Mark Anton said that most of the clients rarely leave the program. There is always a waiting list of people in need and money is needed to help everyone. AAP survives on private donations, special events and local support. They get no state or federal funds. Each client gets a $100 dollar voucher monthly for food and necessities and must pass income and residency guidelines, and some are tested regularly for illegal drugs.

Singer Lorna Luft, Judy Garlands daughter, spoke about her bout with cancer, twice, and the help she received from the Actors Fund. They were there with her all through her ordeal, even being
there when she woke up from surgery. She thanked them for all they have done for her and others in the same situation. She is happy now to be a spokesperson for the Actors Fund, as she knows first hand all they do for those in need.
Many invited guests along with other celebrities came to support the Actors Fund and ask for donations to continue their cause. Helene Galen, Donna MacMillan, Harold Matzner along with home owners Grafton Doyle and Peter Mahler hosted the event. Actors Fund Artist Ambassadors attending were Linda Gray, Lucie Arnaz and Beverly Johnson and more. The Actors Fund is a National Organization that serves all professionals in the performing arts and entertainment.

This outdoor observatory is located a few hundred yards before the north entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. Visitors become stargazers when they step into the ‘orrery’, an outdoor model of the Solar System. We visited this openair educational center on April 30th,, a windy afternoon for a tour of this extraordinary school learning center which has been called “one of the best places in the United States for astronomical viewing,” according to fan, James E. M. Schmitt. He reports this unique
