CVRep Special Luminary Luncheon for Donna Mills

CVRep holds several luminary luncheons throughout the year. The special guest was actress and producer, Donna Mills. This is the first luminary luncheon for 2018. These luncheons are always open to the public. The honored guest is always interviewed by renown Don Martin who

has been doing the interviews since the luncheons began.

Donna Mills is best known for her role as the bad girl, Abby Cunningham on the soap opera, Knots Landing, that had a long run on TV. Many may remember her as the girlfriend of Clint Eastwood in the film, Play Misty For Me. Her list of TV and movie credits is extensive.

Don Martin began his interview after lunch was served. He does his homework when he asks questions about their early life and their careers. Donna Mills even joked with him as to where he got these questions because she didn’t have answers and didn’t remember some of the events. Donna Mills was a dancer in her early career. She found she liked acting after being in a school play. She was thrilled in her first career when

she got roles as a chorus girl and a dancer. Mills continues working and some of her latest characters have been in the movie, JOY, and, 12 Gifts of Christmas. She was cast as Daisy Werthan in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Driving Miss Daisy, in a theatre production.

tickets for the latest play at CVRep, Two Across. The lead actors in the play were in the audience, Andrea Gwynnel, and Joel Bryant. Ron Celona asked if anyone had seen the play and many hands were raised. Celona said they were excited to hold a special event on May 7th where guests could view the new theatre, the stage, dressing rooms and all. He remarked that all this is only possible with the help of everyone in the room and all the donors to make it happen.

It does not matter the amount that one can save out of every paycheck; it is far more critical to establish a habit of saving. Savings should be

placed on auto-pilot because as soon as that hard cold cash reaches one’s hands, there are thousands of things on their wish list, and the idea that they spend the most time doing, the internet, will provide a gazillion more ways to spend easily.

When our rainy day arrives, we all experience the rewards of saving and planning financially.

When a younger person begins to make money, this is the most crucial time to become educated on financial planning. Including a basic economics course in their studies is essential in any career. Investment clubs are very inspiring and a great learning tool.

When you are young invincible, and on your way up, why think about a will, a medical or a financial power of attorney? Young people feel that it is so far into the future, they do not give it a priority. Young adults may not need a will until they

Is Our Manager Licensed?

I complained to the Attorney General who told me they can’t do much. The real estate board says that the manager must have a real estate license, but the board told me it wasn’t necessary. Does a property manager have to be licensed by the State of California and is there a governmental department to whom I can complain? J.C, Lake Forest Dear J.C.: Your real estate board contact is confusing HOA management with rental management. Rental management in California requires a real estate broker’s license, but California does

not require licenses to manage common interest development associations. A number of states require licensing or minimum levels of education, but not California. California does have a voluntary title called the “Certified Common Interest Development Manager,” (“CCIDM”) established by Business and Professions Code Section 11502, requiring 30 hours of education in specified topics. Although the title is optional, Business and Professions 11504 requires managers to annually disclose to the HOA if the manager serving the association is or is not a CCIDM. This requirement applies to the manager serving the HOA, not the company – so having one certified manager in the company does not meet the requirement. Unfortunately, the law is typically not followed by uncertified managers.

There is no state department in California overseeing HOAs, so the best protection is to have educated directors with the right attitude and a solid and qualified manager.

Normally the hiring of association vendors is a board function. However, with a vendor so important as the manager, it might be helpful to introduce the manager (and their background and qualifications) to the members.

The budget will increase, and the board has the right (regardless of anything more restrictive in the governing documents) to increase assessments by up to 20% per year (Civil Code 5605(b)), if the association has issued the Annual Budget Report on time. If the association has not issued the Annual Budget Report items on time, the board may not increase assessments at all without a vote of the membership (Civil Code 5605(a). This is another powerful reason why professional management is important, since qualified managers get these report items out on a timely basis.

Shellfish Farmers Collaborate to Fight Climate Change

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – For shellfish farmers, climate change isn’t a future risk, but a present-day challenge to their industry - and farmers on the West and East coasts are joining forces to fight it.

The new Shellfish Growers Climate Coalition is raising awareness about the effects of carbon pollution on the industry. On the West Coast, the biggest issue is ocean acidification from dissolved carbon dioxide, which makes it difficult for shellfish larvae to grow their shells.

Bill Dewey, the public affairs director for Taylor Shellfish Farms, says acidification decimated their larvae a decade ago. In the aftermath, the company was able to set up a smallscale treatment solution.

“But as conditions get worse, which they’re going to because of what’s already absorbed in the Pacific Ocean, it’s going to start to impact the animals in our nurseries

and on our farms, where we don’t have the ability to treat that water,” he explains.

Taylor Shellfish is a founding member of the coalition. The industry employs more than 2,700 people in Washington state, mostly in rural areas, and contributes more than $180 million a year to the economy. The coalition is also calling attention to the effects of storm damage from climate change, and fluctuations in salinity levels on shellfish farming.

The Nature Conservancy is partnering with the shellfish industry to promote action on climate change.

Jodie Toft, acting marine program director of The Nature Conservancy in Washington, says it’s a natural fit because the group recognizes the crucial role shellfish play in cleaning water and providing habitat. She notes shellfish also play a big role in the Washington way of life.

Heat oven to 350 F. In medium bowl, whisk oil, sugar, eggs, jalapenos and vanilla until blended.

In separate bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt; add to egg mixture. Mix just until combined. Pour into greased 8-by-8-inch baking pan.

Bake 15-20 minutes, or until brownies pull away from sides of pan easily. Cool in pan on wire rack.

Tip: Dust with powdered sugar before serving for added flavor and enhanced presentation.

Get Out the Vote: May Primary Tuesday in North Carolina

By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. – If you haven’t noticed by the number of yard signs poking out of the ground in your neighborhood, Tuesday is North Carolina’s primary election day.

Depending on your county, it will determine candidates for congressional seats in the November midterm election, as well as local and state races.

Voting advocates, including Tomas Lopez, executive director of Democracy North Carolina, want to make sure registered voters understand the importance of voting.

“Even though there aren’t major national races on the ballot this year in North Carolina, there are offices on the ballot that are really important to people’s lives,” he points out. “Sheriffs and district attorneys. If you have an opinion about law

enforcement, no matter what that is, in many cases it’s the primary that’s going to determine who’s in that office.”

NCVoter.org has more information on what races are taking place in your county, as well as where you can vote.

If you have any problems casting your ballot, or have questions, you’re encouraged to call 1-888-OUR-VOTE. You do not need a photo ID since the Supreme Court struck down that state law last year.

Lopez says there still may be some confusion about what’s needed at the polls because of the voting law changes in recent years, but it’s not as complicated as some voters may think.

“There is no photo ID requirement in North Carolina, and in most cases, you shouldn’t have to show any particular document in order to vote,” he states.

“If you are a first-time voter, however, it may be the case that you have to provide some type of documentation.

Typically, that’s a government document, a pay stub,

utility bill, something with your name and address.”

If you arrive at the wrong precinct to cast your ballot, or encounter problems at the polls, you

can request a provisional ballot that will be counted and also creates a record that voting rights groups can review later to make sure you were treated fairly.

By Desert Star Staff DENVER – Unrest between Denver Post workers and hedge fund owner Alden Global Capital is on the rise after editorial page editor Chuck Plunkett resigned late last week.

Workers at The Denver Post and other newspapers across the nation are set to protest Tuesday what they say are predatory management practices in Denver and at Alden’s headquarters in Manhattan.

Post reporter Kieran Nicholson is the newsroom

unit chair for the Denver Newspaper Guild. He says even though the Post made $28 million in profits last year, the company continues to cut staff and costs in ways that are unsustainable.

“They are busy stuffing their pockets as they wring this out,” he states. “And if it’s to the community’s detriment, if it’s to the Post employees’ detriment, they don’t care.

They just want to keep on racking in the profits, and we have to reverse that trend or stop that trend somehow.”

Workers and supporters

are calling for Alden to invest in the Post or sell it to someone who will.

A recent Neiman Lab report found that Alden’s Colorado properties produced a 19 percent profit margin, and the company’s strategy of continued cuts has produced the highest returns in the industry.

Attempts to contact Alden Global Capital or its subsidiary Digital First Media for a response so far have been unsuccessful.

After the most recent layoff announcement, the

Post’s newsroom is set to drop to just 70 from a staff well above 200, and other departments also have seen dramatic cuts.

Nicholson argues that ending Alden’s shortsighted business model is the only way for the Post to continue its mission, for more than a century, of serving as a watchdog and trusted information source for Denver and Colorado.

“We feel that we help people make important decisions,” he states. “If it were to vanish or disappear, I

think it would be detrimental to the community as a whole. Who’s going to watch the powerful and hold them accountable?”

Newspaper workers plan to deliver a petition with more than 1,000 signatures to Alden president Heath Freeman.

Nicholson says the petition is a public cry asking the hedge fund to sell to local owners, or at least to an owner who is willing to reinvest earnings into journalism.

By Desert Star Staff Social media has been flooded with comments after Republican Senator John McCain demanded that US President Donald Trump be kept away from his funeral.

McCain, 81, who has been

battling a brain tumor since his diagnosis July of 2017, shared some thoughts and, it appears, funeral plans over the weekend. Everything has been thought of, including the list of unwelcome guests.

According to those close

to McCain that list includes just one person: Trump.

Struck by the unusualness of this statement, some on Twitter suggested it would probably make little to no difference if Trump attended the funeral, as long as McCain

attended himself, insisting that death couldn’t be used as an excuse to sanctify McCain.

The pair have a lessthan-friendly relationship after Trump’s sarcastic remarks about McCain’s Vietnam past and the dispute over Obamacare. Yet some Twitter users mocked Trump for being the only one on the list of “undesired” guests.

While former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush are expected to make eulogies at any potential funeral for McCain, some Twitter users predicted that Trump would retaliate by disinviting McCain to his own funeral before killing himself to bring about those circumstances sooner than would otherwise be expected.

Others pitied Trump for being so unpopular, as they remarked on the lack of a formal invitation from Prince Harry to his upcoming wedding and the fact that his snub from a possible

McCain funeral was without precedent. “Anyone ever hear of a POTUS being unwelcome anywhere?” one woman asked.

However, McCain’s decision to disinvite Trump had also prompted some to point out that not everyone at the White House will be sorry about Trump’s absence, pointing out the enjoyable time First Lady Melania Trump and former President Barack Obama had at Barbara Bush’s send-off.

Sitting next to Obama, Melania was caught having a warm exchange that was widely discussed on social media. Smiling at each other, Obama and Melania created an impression of cracking jokes at a date, rather than grieving at a funeral.

It explains why some Twitter users couldn’t help expressing hope that Melania might looking forward to yet another funeral date with Barack Obama.

Ohio’s School Districts Struggle to Cover Lost Funding

Mike and Lindsay have four children – ages 6, 8, 10 and 12 – who need to catch multiple buses every morning to different schools in the Aurora City School District. That means Mike and Lindsay have to make sure all four children are dressed, fed breakfast and put on their buses before the parents can dash off to work in Solon and Kent, respectively.

“If I didn’t have busing,” Lindsay says as she pours cereal for 6-year-old Brynlee, “it just wouldn’t work.”

Beginning in the 201819 school year, Aurora’s transportation funding will be cut in half from where it was a year ago, and Portage County’s second largest school district will have to find the money to pay that bill. Ohio’s current two-year budget, which passed last summer, includes a major revision to school district transportation funding that affects more than half of Ohio’s more than 600 school districts.

The state helps districts cover transportation costs based on the district’s overall ability to raise revenue from its tax base. Changes in the complex formula the state uses to determine how districts receive transportation funding will result in Aurora’s funding being halved from $700,000 in the 2016-17 school year to $350,000 in the 2018-19 school year. In all, by next year, 335 school districts will have seen reduced transportation

funding since 2016-17.

“The State of Ohio continues to push the burden on school funding from the state level, partially, to the local taxpayers,” says Aurora superintendent Pat Ciccantelli.

“Eventually we’ll have to look at more local revenues to offset these kinds of losses.”

Stephen Dyer, an education policy fellow at Innovation Ohio, sees the state’s cuts as just one part of an ongoing problem.

“This is why education funding drives people crazy,” Dyer says. “Because the foundational problem with Ohio education funding is that the state just doesn’t want to pay for it.”

Governor John Kasich requested the cuts in his budget proposal last year.

The cuts went untouched as the budget passed both chambers and was eventually signed by Kasich in July.

“The only reason to do this is to free up some money so they can make a tax cut,” Dyer claims, seeing no policybased reason for cutting school district transportation.

Kasich saw the cuts as necessary, however, telling the Ohio House of Representatives before proposing his budget, “It is going to be tough.

We are on the verge of recession in our state.”

Dyer, who used to represent Portage County in the Ohio House is disappointed by the lawmakers he used to work with.

“I wish they would work so hard to figure out how to get money into schools rather than trying to figure out how to get money into the pockets of people who

Ciccantelli agrees. “I’d love to see us tweak the system and make it a little bit fairer, going back to the level of state support we had even just five and eight years ago.”

On a broader scale, Dyer sees these cuts as a slippery slope to even tighter financial situations for Ohio school districts and families, predicting districts will try to make up the lost funds with tax levies.

“Are we going to have to go to the ballot so that we can raise a new levy and raise people’s property taxes to pay for that gap, or are kids just going to have to do without?” Dyer asks. “Those are really horrible decisions for school districts to make.”

When asked in 2017 how districts should make up the funding lost in his budget, Kasich replied, “Why don’t they put a levy on? Because if they put a levy on, guess how much of the money goes into the schools? 100 percent.”

Mike Acomb sees it differently.

“I’m angry about it because I have to continuously tax myself to get my kids what they need,” he says.

Lindsay Acomb also takes it personally.

“It’s kind of scary,” she says.

“It’s almost like a punishment for being a working parent. They’re punishing us because we want to work and have jobs.”

Luckily for the Acombs, Aurora can handle the transportation cut by dipping into its general fund … for now.

Ciccantelli says the district’s transportation offerings will not change once the cuts come through, but other things that Aurora’s general fund might have paid for may go away.

“We’ll look at what it is we’ll have to cut,” Ciccantelli says of his “already lean” district. “The litmus test we’ll use is if it impacts kids significantly, we won’t cut it.”

By Desert Star Staff Accusing Washington of attempts to “rewrite history,” Iran has firmly rejected as a “mockery” of the justice system the US court’s recent default ruling which ordered Tehran to pay over $6 billion in damages to 9/11 victims.

“Issuing such an absurd and unacceptable verdict mocks not only the international legal system but also the survivors and families of the victims of the September 11 attacks,” Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Bahram Kasemi said Sunday, rejecting the New York court’s decision.

Last week, Manhattan’s District Judge George Daniels made a default ruling (issued in the absence of a defendant) that found Tehran liable for the deaths and ordered its entities to pay over $6 billion in compensations to the families of more than 1,000 victims of the September 11 attacks.

Accusing the US of attempting to “rewrite history,” the Foreign Ministry stressed that the country reserves the

right to respond to any “illegal procedures” and asserted that the ruling was obviously “politically” motivated.

The spokesman also rejected similar past verdicts against Iran, reiterating that the country had nothing to do with organizing or financing the 9/11 attacks. Previously Judge Daniels had issued default judgments against Iran, in 2011 and 2016, ordering the Islamic republic to pay billions of dollars to victims of the attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people.

The rulings against Tehran are especially astounding since none of the 19 hijackers on September 11, 2001, were even Iranian citizens, and no investigation ever found links to Iran. The 9/11 Commission –the organization tasked with investigating the attacks– has said there is no evidence indicating direct Iranian involvement or suggesting that Tehran was even aware of the 9/11 plot.

the kingdom’s alleged role in the attacks. Both Iranian and Saudi involvement is being reviewed under the 2016 Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA) guidelines, which paved the way for legal proceedings against foreign states and their officials suspected of supporting terrorism.

Chris Hemsworth Stars in ‘12 Strong’ Now on DVD

September 11, 2001, is a date that has been burned into our national consciousness forever. It was the day that Americans watched in horror as the World Trade Center was attacked from the air and came crashing down.

In the opening scenes of the powerful Warner Bros. film “12 Strong” Captain Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth) witnesses the destruction on television along with his family. Immediately after that he and 11 other U.S. Special Forces Green Berets are called into action and together they are sent into the mountains of northern Afghanistan to convince General Rashid

Dostum (Navid Negahban) to join them to fight their common enemy--the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies.

The group, along with General Rashid Dostum’s army, are vastly outnumbered, and the steep mountain passes they must travel are incredibly narrow. To make matters even worse for this daring dozen, they must go on horseback. This isn’t a problem for Nelson, who grew up on a ranch. However, it isn’t that easy for the others who have never ridden a horse before. Their fierce military battles on small Afghan horses remind us of a modern-day ‘western’ set

COLCOA French Film Festival Returns to the Directors Guild The 22nd annual COLCOA French Film Festival, the largest festival of its kind dedicated to French cinema and television series, recently wrapped up after eight days of screenings at the Directors Guild of America where a smorgasbord of 86 films, television and digital series, and VR programs were offered. Competing for awards were 33 features, 23 short films, 12 television series, four documentaries, and four digital series. (The winners are listed below.)

Over 23,000 people attended the eight-day festival, which kicked off with a fabulous opening night gala where cameras snapped, wine flowed, and invited guests feasted on foods beautifully presented by an array of French chefs.

This annual cinematic journey through the works of famous and emerging directors, is a collaborative effort between the Franco-American Cultural Fund, the Directors Guild of America, Motion Picture Association of America, Writers Guild of America West, France’s Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers of Music, Directors and Producers (L’ARP,) the Film and Television Office of the French Embassy in Los Angeles, the CNC, TV France International, and Unifrance.

The memorable opening night film was Promise at

Dawn (La promesse de l’aube,) which is based on the life of French novelist and diplomat Romain Gary.

The film, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Pierre Niney, each of whom give outstanding performances as mother and son, was adapted by Éric Barbier and Marie Eynard from Gary’s book, and is brilliantly directed by Barbier.

The story takes us through the life and times of a man who grew up with his unrelenting Russian-Jewish mother in the 1920s. She filled him with seemingly impossible expectations and reminded him almost every day of her grandiose ambitions for him and even when he’s lying wounded in a military hospital bed, she instructs him to keep writing his book.

With too many to list, some of the outstanding films included: A Memoir of War, Makala, Return of the Hero, The Lady in the Portrait, Radiance, Plot 35, The Night Eats the World, Stand Up Girl, Some Like it Veiled, The Prince of Nothingwood, Christmas and Co, Naked Normandy, Let the Girls Play, The Guardians, Dog, My Son, Christmas and Co., Family is Family, See You There, Jealous, Radiance, Diving, Burn Out, Naked, School of Life, and C’est La Vie. Sandrine Kiberlain, Adriana Ugarte, and the irresistible Gerard Depardieu complete the two couples. The entertaining story illuminates what happens when a much older man leaves his wife for a gorgeous, sexy, much younger woman. His friend, another older, but seemingly happily married man, fantasizes multiple erotic adventures with this beguiling creature and the results are surprising.

With the potpourri of exciting cinematic and television works presented in this year’s COLCOA French Film Festival, one can eagerly look forward to next year’s edition, which will take place April 2019.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: A Music Lover’s Wish List nominated for admission into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!

Crazy when you gaze beyond the 30 million in album sales and consider the massive influence of Robert Smith’s potent vocals and distinctive guitar work as well as the band’s goth-rock stylings that laid the groundwork for a slew of descendants including the Church, the Smashing Pumpkins and Interpol.

Photo: Robert Kinsler The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 Induction Ceremony premiered on HBO on Saturday May 5, with Bon Jovi, The Cars, Dire Straits, The Moody Blues, Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe added to the museum’s ranks.

Watching the event (and seeing the Cars and Moody Blues finally get a nod) got me thinking about a number of my own favorite artists who have not yet been honored with induction into the Cleveland, Ohio-based Rock Hall. The following is my list of 10 artists that fully deserving of the honor.

Bad Company – Despite the obvious (and mandatory) inclusion of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, I have often wondered if there has been a strong bias against British rockers. Just look how long it took for Electric Light Orchestra, Deep Purple, Moody Blues and solo careers of George Harrison and Ringo Starr to land a spot; no surprise my “wish list” of inductees includes a long line of groundbreaking and popular Brits. Eligible since the early 1990s, British supergroup Bad Company featured singer-

songwriter Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke (of Free), guitarist Mick Ralphs (of Mott the Hoople) and bassist Boz Burrell (of King Crimson); the strong quartet carved out a number of bona fide classic rockers including “Bad Company,” “Good Lovin’ Gone Bad,” “Movin’ On,” “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” “Gone Gone Gone” and “Can’t Get Enough.”

Big Star – Album sales aren’t everything. Big Star’s debut (“#1 Record”) was cursed with minimal marketing and distribution from Stax Records upon its release in 1972 despite universal praise from critics. A similar fate befell the group’s equally-sterling second LP (“Radio City”).

However, the Memphis rockers’ legacy has continued to grow with every passing year; count R.E.M., Cheap Trick, the Posies, the Replacements and the Bangles among the many high-profile groups who have acknowledged the huge influence of Big Star on their music. The group’s blend of Beatles-styled melodies and crunchy guitars sounds as contemporary today as it did 45 years ago.

Boston – Not only do Boston’s most enduring hits (“More Than A Feeling,” “Foreplay/Long Time,” “Peace of Mind,” “Don’t Look Back,” “Amanda”) remain great sounding staples on radio, but the band’s textured and layered approach to recording continues to influence music makers across the spectrum today.

Kate Bush - Decades before artists such as Björk and Florence Welch (of Florence + the Machine) impressed with a mix of song, dance and visual arts, English songstress Kate Bush impressed with her mastery of multiple art forms. At age 19, her 1978 single “Wuthering Heights” earned her the honor of being the first female artist to have a self-penned single atop the British charts. Other great songs have followed, including “Don’t Give Up” (an enduring duet with Peter Gabriel), “Running Up That Hill” and “King of the Mountain.”

The Cure – I could be wrong, but I don’t think The Cure has ever even been

Depeche Mode – If getting into the Rock Hall is all about album sales and longevity, credit synth pop pioneers Depeche Mode with more than 100 million albums dating back to the early 1980s. But more importantly, the group’s groundbreaking blend of electronica and rock continues to impress and influence countless

The Smiths – Although the Smiths only recorded a handful of studio albums in the 1980s, the quartet’s influence is massive. The widely-acknowdged founding father of Britpop, the Smiths’ pioneering sound and style influenced a continuing wave of British greats including the Stone Roses, Oasis, Blur, Travis and Ride.

The Zombies – English rockers The Zombies have been nominated several times dating back to 2013 but omitted in favor of the artistically-deficient likes of Journey, Cat Stevens and

Look beyond the group’s best known hits (“Whip It” and a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction”) and discerning listeners will be immersed in a mix of sci-fi themes, social commentary and a muchneeded sense of fun.

critics as one of the greatest alternative rock acts of the past 25 years. Radiohead should be nominated and inducted without question in 2019.

Radiohead – Although the British quintet was nominated for inclusion in 2018 they didn’t make the final cut. Radiohead is widely acknowledged by discerning music fans and

Bon Jovi. To be clear, the Zombies’ were a key part of the seminal British Invasion and were the first rock band to masterfully blend melodic rock, baroque pop and jazz together successfully. Eligible since 1988, the Zombies’ 1968 album “Odessey and Oracle” is one of the greatest albums of all time. To put it simply, it is criminal that the Zombies (who remain a toptier live and recording act in 2018) are not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

In addition to the aforementioned snubs, artists that I personally love and would like to see at least get a nomination include New Order, The Monkees, Aimee Mann, Ten Years After and Peter Frampton for starters...

Lengthy Court Challenge Expected Over Iowa’s Abortion Bill

By Desert Star Staff DES MOINES, Iowa – A legal challenge is expected ahead of July 1, when Iowa is set to enforce the most restrictive abortion law in the nation.

Following approval from Iowa Senate Republicans last week, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed the so-called fetal heartbeat bill on Friday.

The Iowa law would bar physicians from performing most abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically at six weeks into a pregnancy and often before a woman realizes she’s pregnant.

Veronica Fowler, communications director for ACLU of Iowa, says the new law comes after the Iowa Legislature voted to forfeit the state’s family planning money, resulting in the closure of four Planned Parenthood clinics that served 15,000 women in Iowa.

“The passage of this

bill comes at a time when legislators have also led this devastating assault on access to family planning and contraception,” she states.

The Iowa ACLU and Planned Parenthood of the Heartland already have announced plans to challenge the law’s constitutionality.

Fowler says Iowa’s new abortion law pushes the state to the front of conservative statehouses attempting to impose the most restrictive regulations on the medical procedure.

“It’s extremely regrettable that people are imposing their own strict religious and moral code on the entire state,” she stresses.

Fowler notes that three years ago the federal appeals court struck down similar “heartbeat” bills approved by lawmakers in Arkansas and North Dakota.

“Iowa does have a rich

the bill is an attempt by Iowa legislators to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision affirming the legality of a woman’s right to an abortion.

Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, says SEPTA’s policies banning ads on political and controversial social issues turn the First Amendment on its head.

“Political speech and public debate get the most constitutional protection,” says Tack-Hooper. “But SEPTA’s policy essentially says the more important the speech, the less SEPTA wants it on its subways and buses.”

She says in letters exchanged with the Center for Investigative Reporting, SEPTA explained its policy as an attempt to keep out hate speech.

But Tack-Hooper points out that the courts already have told the authority it could not ban an anti-Muslim ad campaign sponsored by a group called the American Freedom Defense Initiative.

“Of course, even those

AFDI ads, which I think most SEPTA riders would probably agree are racist and gross, didn’t bring the trains to a grinding halt,” says TackHooper. “They didn’t have much of an effect at all on the operation of the transit system.”

She notes that the City of Philadelphia, which controls ad space on city bus shelters, has agreed to display the CIR ads. Tack-Hooper adds that the Transportation Authority has other ways to respond to hate speech in advertising that are far less extreme than banning protected speech.

“For example, SEPTA could use its ad space to put up its own message of tolerance and disavow groups like AFDI that might advertise on SEPTA,” says Tack-Hooper.

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

public transit system.

The Center for Investigative Reporting has compiled data showing racial disparities in home mortgage lending in 61 American cities, including Philadelphia. But when it sought

to highlight the results with an ad campaign, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority refused to display the ads on its trains and buses.

By Desert Star Staff DENVER - Even with this year’s increase in Colorado’s minimum wage, now at $10.20 an hour, workers in ski-resort counties and cities such as Boulder continue to struggle.

On Thursday, a state Senate committee is scheduled to hear a bill that would allow municipalities to set their own minimum wages.

of pay, one size doesn’t fit all.

“Because the cost of living differs throughout a state,” he said, “it makes sense to have a higher minimum wage in regions or cities that are more expensive.”

In 1999, Colorado passed a law prohibiting local governments from setting their own minimum wage, and more than a dozen states now have similar pre-emptive laws.

Opponents have said allowing a patchwork of wage floors across the state would lead to job loss, and businesses would have to pass higher costs on to consumers.

However, analysis by the

Center for Economic and Policy Research found that businesses end up saving money after minimum-wage hikes, and that their training costs go down because workers stay on the job longer and take on more responsibility.

When companies don’t pay a living wage, Strauss said, taxpayers end up footing the bill as workers turn to public assistance to get by.

“Yes, we may be paying two pennies more for a McDonald’s meal,” he said, “but at the same time, we can be satisfied that workers in the store are not going to be living off of food stamps.”

Palm Springs is hot spot of syphilis outbreak KMIR Max Rodriguez The Riverside County public health staff is warning of a Syphilis outbreak in the Coachella Valley, with the county’s health officer concerned over the spread of the diseases reaching a critical point.

“We do have a syphilis outbreak happening right now,” Marcella HerreraCarpenter said, she is the program coordinator for the Riverside University Health System with the county.

These are busy times for Dr. Christopher Foltz at the Dock in Palm Springs, he specializes and treats infectious diseases with the Desert Aids Project.

Foltz said, “Primary Syphilis usually people get a sore, could be anywhere on the body, usually in the genital region sometimes in the mouth.”

But he said the sores from the first and second phases

of the disease can disappear within one or two weeks, “And the infection can go dormant in the body and kind of lay quiet for a while and that’s when it gets more difficult to diagnose.”

But Herrera-Carpenter said the disease can still be transmitted to others, “And how do we stop that, well we stop that by first of all knowing who are partners are, using protection, limiting those partners and making sure that everybody is getting an S-T-D check-up.”

She said the county is still sourcing the reason behind the outbreak, but they do know that men who practice sex with men make-up most of the cases. The county’s number of Syphilis cases in Palm Springs and North Palm Springs are ten times more than the rest of the county.

Herrera-Carpenter said, “We don’t have any answers,

we have dealing with this for a number of years and essentially we need to start thinking outside the box.”

But Dr. Foltz has seen a recent trend that may be out of the box.

Foltz said, “The reason why I think a lot of the surge with the Syphilis outbreak is because of PrEP people are often using PrEP as a way to not use condoms so that is increasing the incidents of all STDs.” Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a drug that reduces the transmission of HIV, but it does not take the role of a condom.

Foltz said, “If you have been a little bit more risky definitely ask, there’s nothing wrong with asking to get tested for syphilis.”

The bigger temblor struck with a 4.5 magnitude at 4:49 a.m. at a depth of eight miles, its epicenter 6 miles south-southeast of Mt. San Gorgonio and 8 miles north of Cabazon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Two minutes later, a

magnitude-3.2 quake was recorded in the same area.

There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries even though the quake was felt over a wide are of Southern California, including in Los Angeles around 90 miles to the west of the epicenter, according to residents who contacted the editorial headquarters of City News Service on L.A.’s Westside.

Within 40 minutes of the bigger quake, more than 6,700 people had reported on the official USGS website

having felt it. According to a map based on those reports, the quake was felt as far north as Santa Clarita and Palmdale in northern Los Angeles County and as far south as Tijuana, Mexico.

By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump has promised the highest level of sanctions on Iran after announcing that US is leaving the nuclear deal. He promised Tehran “bigger problems than it has ever had before” if it develops nuclear weapons.

Trump called the agreement a “decaying and rotten structure… defective at its core,” which did little to limit Iran’s nuclear enrichment and provided the government in Tehran with cash to fund its “malign behavior” across the Middle East.

“Therefore, I am announcing today that the US will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal,” Trump said.

“Today’s action sends a critical message: the US no longer makes empty threats. When I make promises, I keep them.”

Powerful US sanctions against Iran will go into full effect, Trump said, and any country that aids Tehran’s

nuclear or missile programs will find itself sanctioned as well. If Iran continues developing nuclear weapons, “it will have bigger problems than it has ever had before,” the US president said.

Trump professed admiration for the Iranian people, history and culture, but denounced the “dictatorship” that has held the country “hostage” for almost 40 years - a reference to the 1979 Islamic revolution that overthrew the US-backed monarchy.

The revolutionaries stormed the US embassy in Tehran and held fifty-two Americans hostage for over a year.

The US president concluded his remarks on a strangely conciliatory note, saying he would be ready and willing to talk if the Iranian leadership decided to “make a new and lasting deal.”

Tax-Time Scammers Target Granite State

By Desert Star Staff CONCORD, N.H. — With the end of tax season approaching, officials are warning Granite Staters to be cautious of suspicious phone calls.

The Attorney General’s office said it has received about 100 complaints related to Internal Revenue Service scams in the past week.

Senior Assistant Attorney General James Boffetti explained the calls are either a live person or recorded message claiming to be from the IRS, and threatening arrest or other legal action unless there is an immediate payment for delinquent taxes.

“A lot of very savvy people get tricked by this stuff. It is disconcerting - and for some people, frightening - to be told that they’re subject to being arrested, even if they know that they don’t have any IRS issue,” Boffetti said. “But if you do get tricked into making the payment, you’re probably going to take that loss. “ Boffetti said often, the money goes quickly overseas and is nearly impossible to

breaches that have happened,” he said. “And my theory is that this information from the data breaches is sold off to scam artists and they use that to determine who may be more vulnerable. And they’ve decided that senior citizens are a population that they want to target.”

If someone receives one of these calls, his advice

is to not engage with the person on the other line and immediately hang up. The Attorney General’s office said personal information should never be provided over the phone or email to anyone, unless the source of the inquiry has been verified.

a patient’s onset of symptoms and crucial treatment.

“In the case of strokes, every moment counts, and thanks to ITTS, we’re able to deliver treatment faster than ever before,” says Gary Belt, M.D., stroke neurologist at Atlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center in Summit, N.J., a not-forprofit multihospital system and the first in the country to implement ITTS technology.

Recent research highlights the benefits of this technology: patients evaluated with ITTS in ambulances while in-transit to the hospital can be treated with the brain saving drug alteplase 13 minutes faster than those patients not assessed until they are in the emergency department (referred to as door-to-needle, or DTN, time), according to a recent study

by researchers at Overlook Medical Center and Atlantic Health System and published by the journal “Stroke.”

The first-of-its-kind study assessed 89 presumptive stroke patients in ambulances over 15 months from January 2015 through March 2016.

Atlantic Health System paramedics responding to neurological emergencies used an InTouch Xpress device -- a portable unit with a high-

definition camera, microphone and screen -- allowing video communication with a stroke neurologist who performed a neurological evaluation of the patient while in-transit to the emergency department.

Once the patients arrived at the participating hospital’s emergency department, the neurologist assumed care and, when indicated, administered alteplase, a tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) that breaks down blood clots to restore blood flow to the brain.

“We are constantly looking for ways to treat stroke patients as quickly as possible, as each passing minute of lost blood supply translates to more brain damage,” says John J. Halperin, M.D., senior study investigator and chair, department of neurosciences at Overlook Medical Center.

“Our observations suggest that pre-hospital evaluation with telestroke may provide a scalable, affordable way to speed stroke treatment, as well as more rapidly direct patients to the centers capable of performing the procedures that will serve their needs best.” StatePoint
