Australian Firefighters Calendar is back and Supporting US Charities
By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, -- Now in its 29th year, the Australian Firefighters Calendar is back, producing six editions for 2022. As always, the favorite Cats, Dogs, Horse, Classic and Mixed Animal calendar featuring Australian wildlife will be on offer for the calendar’s millions of supporters around the world. Heating things for the first time, the Summer edition calendar is now available, featuring firefighters enjoying the Australian beaches and having fun in the sun. The inaugural Summer calendar
cover features Australia’s fittest firefighter, Matt Haydon. With a proud 29-year history of supporting worthy causes within Australia, it was time to begin to help those in need internationally. This year, the Australian Firefighters Calendar is teaming up with a well-known U.S.-based organization, the Greater Good Charities. Sales of this year’s calendar support the Greater Good Charities’ Rescue Rebuild program, which helps renovate animal shelters, domestic violence shelters, and homeless shelters to help pets and the
people who care for them. One of the projects the Greater Good Charities will be supporting will be the ‘Lost Our Home’ renovation. The Greater Goods Rescue Build team will carry out the project in conjunction with the Jackson Galaxy Project, in which existing shelter rooms will be redesigned for animals requiring comfort after coming in from domestic violence situations. “The Greater Good Charities is so excited to be partnering with the Australian

What is herd immunity? A public health expert explains By Rodney E. Rohde Professor of Clinical Laboratory Science, Texas State University The term herd immunity means that enough of a population has gained immunity to stifle a pathogen’s spread. You can think of herd immunity as being similar to fire starting in a field: If the field is dry and filled with weeds, the fire will catch and spread quickly. However, if the field is well-maintained with watering and trimming, the fire will fizzle out. Future embers that might land there will be far less likely to ignite. The embers are much like SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Herd immunity can theoretically be achieved either

through infection and recovery or by vaccination. The danger of trying to achieve herd immunity through infection is that many people will die or be forced to live with post-recovery disabilities. Moreover, research has shown that the immune response resulting from infection does not always provide strong enough long-term protection against COVID-19 and its evolving strains. Thus, public health experts still recommend vaccination against the coronavirus to achieve the strongest and most reliable protection. When the COVID-19 pandemic erupted, scientists quickly began to develop vaccines so that populations could develop immunity to slow the firelike spread of the coronavirus. In the meantime, nearly all countries mandated or encouraged social distancing, masking and other public health measures. Unfortunately, the disjointed implementation of these efforts, coupled with large-scale surges and the emergence of the highly transmissible delta variant, has forced public health experts to recalculate what it would take to reach “herd immunity” for COVID-19. Why herd immunity matters Prior experience with respiratory pathogens that were comparable to the new coronavirus allowed public health experts to make educated estimates of what
would be needed to reach the lower threshold of herd immunity for COVID-19. Initially they believed that around 70% of the population would need to be vaccinated to effectively slow or stop the spread of SARS-CoV-2. But with the delta variant continuing to spread rapidly around the world, experts revised that estimate. Now, epidemiologists and other public health officials estimate that closer to 90% of the U.S. population would need to be vaccinated to reach herd immunity for COVID-19. Viruses like those that cause polio and measles required decades of education and vaccination programs to achieve herd immunity and to ultimately eliminate them in the U.S. But given that new U.S. cases of COVID-19 continue to number in the tens of thousands daily, it’s become clear that COVID-19 is going to stick around. [Research into coronavirus and other news from science Subscribe to The Conversation’s new science newsletter.] There are several reasons it will take some time to achieve COVID-19 herd immunity. The COVID-19 vaccines are currently authorized for some age groups but not others. For perspective, roughly 90% of the U.S. population receives the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine – or MMR – as children, and 93% of the population is
vaccinated against polio; both of these have been routine childhood immunizations for decades. Since children make up more than 20% of U.S. residents, the country likely cannot reach COVID-19 herd immunity without widespread childhood vaccination, even if all eligible adults were vaccinated. As of Nov. 1, 2021, only 67.8% of the total U.S. population ages 12 and up that are vaccine-eligible had been fully vaccinated. Experts have attributed this
to multiple factors including vaccine hesitancy and the politicization of the pandemic. Of course, no vaccine is perfect. Vaccinated people can have breakthrough infections, although the COVID-19 vaccines continue to effectively reduce the most severe cases of COVID-19. In addition, research suggests that those who experience COVID-19 after vaccination may transmit the virus at lower transmission rates than those who are unvaccinated.
Cadillac Returns to Le Mans in 2023 After 20-Year Hiatus By Desert Star Staff Cadillac will bring its storied history in racing to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023 — for the first time in 20 years. The historic race will see Cadillac compete in the LMDh (Le Mans Daytona h) category, a hypercar class that demands a clean-energy output. LMDh vehicles are intended to resemble prototypes of future models so that manufacturers can showcase and test their concepts. The class has made recent regulatory changes designed to create more parity among racers, providing tight controls on downforce, drag, and engine power. The changes are attracting some of the more recognizable auto manufacturers. • Peugeot said it would enter the hypercar category in 2022. • In April, Ferrari
announced it would join the classification in 2023. • Acura, Toyota, Porsche, and Audi have already established a presence. General Motors,

the parent company of Cadillac, generated $26.78 billion in revenue in Q3 2021, surpassing Wall Street estimates of $26.51 billion in revenue.
However, the carmaker’s third-quarter revenue was still down 25% compared to the $35.5 billion it generated in Q3 2020.

White House announces start date for vaccine mandate in the US President Joe Biden’s Covid-19 vaccine mandate for businesses will be enforced after the White House announced New Year. Failure to comply will incur heavy penalties, with a fine of around $14,000 per violation. The US will begin enforcing mandatory coronavirus vaccination for private-sector workers starting January 4, the White House announced on Wednesday. Those not vaccinated will have to be tested weekly. “It is important to understand that there are still
so many workers who are not protected and remain at risk from being seriously ill or dying from Covid-19,” said a senior administration official in remarks carried by the White House press service. Failure to comply with the vaccine mandate will incur heavy penalties for businesses, which will face an “approximate” fine of $14,000 per violation. The sentences will scale up with multiple cases of abuse, senior officials said. It was not immediately apparent whether workers could get fired should they
refuse vaccination or testing. The requirement for federal contractors to be vaccinated was pushed back a month and will be
enforced from the same date. “By January 4, 2022, [healthcare] facilities must ensure that all staff has received the necessary shots
to be fully vaccinated – either two doses of Pfizer, two doses of Moderna, or one dose of Johnson & Johnson,” the senior official said.

Re-Evaluating your needs for a Sound Future By Janice Gough Our goal in Financial Planning without clients is to establish a realistic road map to guide them for the future, incorporating where the economy is today. We view setting the goals and analysis on Using Time, Not Money, calculating How Much You Need To Be Financially Free. If you (or you and your partner/spouse) stopped working today, how long could you survive financially? That is a crucial question and one that most people will never calculate. This is why, when the unexpected happens—like a job layoff, an illness, or a divorce—so many people are not prepared. This is one reason why so many people struggle to find the best path forward and achieve true freedom. This is a different time than we have experienced in the past, and when an unexpected event, such as loss of work etc., is maybe the first time, you are forced to face the truth of where they are and how long they can survive financially. First, we start with defining,” What Do You Need To Live On?” Most people calculate what they want and need in terms of money. For example, “I need $1 million to live on for the rest
of my life.” When you talk with some financial planners, they speak to you about your nest egg, how much money you will have to set aside to retire. However, there is a better way to answer the question. Instead of measuring your wealth in terms of money, it’s better to measure your wealth in terms of time. The other important consideration we ask our client is, “If you (or you and your partner/spouse) stopped working today, how long could you survive financially?” If you stopped working today, it would mean “no more paychecks.” Thus, no income is coming in from those sources. How long could you survive financially? We are talking about survival at your current standard of living, not if you downsized your house, sold your car and rode the bus, stopped eating out, and so forth. Given your current level of expenses, how long would your money last? By calculating your income from all sources. Which consists of your savings, CDs, retirement accounts, liquid stocks (stocks you could sell today), physical gold and silver you have in your possession. Anything that can be converted into cash today. This does not include selling your jewelry, your furniture, or your second car, for example, because that would lower your current standard of living. It
does have cash flow from dividends, rental real estate, and other investments that produce income without your effort — otherwise known as passive income, as these incomes, can change. Your finances are dynamic; they are continually evolving. You may come up with a similar answer, or you may be surprised by your new outcome. Because our past spending habits were based on the previous passive income, thus it is valuable to make further analysis and make modifications, comparing Your available money vs. Your monthly expenses By doing the math and dividing how much money you have available by your monthly expenses, You will know the number of months you can stay at that pace. For most people, their
number is three or less. That means they could only survive without paychecks for three months or less. So most people are pretty much-living paycheck to paycheck. Some have a fraction instead of a whole number, which means they spend more every month than they are bringing in. Now you know something that most people will never take the time to figure out. And most importantly, now that you know, you can take action and change it. Look at your finances if you are unhappy, or even upset and disturbed, about that number in front of you—good. That just means it’s time to get to work. So, now that you know how much you have gone out every month versus how much you have coming in or available to you, do you want to understand what true financial freedom is?
Once you realize that, it is much less daunting to achieve true freedom than you thought. With inflation already at five ½%, we must make at least that amount added to keep up. Thus, by getting your money working for you, you can achieve Financial Freedom. Once you start compounding your wealth through investments, you will learn more and be more excited to make new ones. 120% Lino Brings Dash of Fashion to Desert
By Anthony Grant Quietly, one of the world’s foremost fashion brands has slipped into Palm Desert: 120% Lino opened just this past year at The Gardens on El Paseo. This is the world’s best quality linen clothing. According to The Gardens on El Paseo website, 120% Lino “is Italy’s foremost fashion brand specialized in linen for men, women and children. High quality materials, innovation, selectivity, and precious fibers are the basis of the brand.” It adds that “Linen clothing is the oldest known textile ever produced. It qualifies as a strong, fine and naturally breathable fabric. The raw linen, a very ‘cool’
resistant fiber, is selected from the best resources worldwide and printed, embroidered or mixed with silk and cashmere, always in style and in tune with the dominant fashion trends.” This prestigious brand “offers an understated elegant style, the perfect fit for people who love sophistication and natural elegance either in the city, or during travel, every season of the year.” Perhaps fittingly for the world’s oldest known fabric—coveted by the ancient Egyptians, and perhaps worn by Jesus himself—my own experience with the 120% Lino brand starts with a memory. It was years ago in Paris when
on a hot summer’s day I found a pair of linen shirts, one white and blue and each with floral patterns, in a boutique. They were a bit pricey but I knew from experience that linen is a much more breathable fabric than cotton, and dries faster too. Yes linen tends to wrinkle but as any linen aficionado will tell you, that’s part of the charm. Anyway, I wore those shirts for years, so durable is the fabric. I never expected to find this quintessentially Italian brand outside of Europe, so imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon the bright, airy 120% Lino boutique at The Gardens on El Paseo. Though understated, the clothing is
elegant with surprising pops of color (hand-dyed fabrics) and though functional has just that right amount of insouciance to suggest glamor. And indeed, celebrities such as Ryan Seacrest and Robert Downey Jr. have been seen wearing 120% Lino, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But the star of this show is, as the name indicates, linen. The organic linen wear for men and women includes floral-print dresses, wide-leg pants, patterned Bermuda shorts and linen shirts in both short and long sleeves, linen blazers in a palette of neutrals and more. There are also accessories such as elegant
handbags, belts and bracelets. Overall a trip to the 120% Lino boutique is like embarking on a yacht tour of the Greek islands—no wonder Italian model Marco Fantini has appeared on Instagram in the brand’s clothes against the backdrop of Santorini. Linen is the ideal fabric not only for the Mediterranean but also for the harsh climate of the Coachella Valley. Thanks to 120% Lino, you can defy the desert heat in organic linen style, all year long. Visit the boutique at The Gardens, Level 1, visit 120percento.com or call (442) 666-3053—and tell them Anthony sent you!
Australian Firefighters Calendar is back and Supporting US Charities
Continued from Page 1
Firefighters Calendar; we have been a huge supporter of their work through our social media channels for years now. This will be the start of a long-lasting partnership on charity projects across the U.S.,” said Lesley Cave, director of Partnerships at Greater Good Charities. For the first 29-year history, the calendar will be printed outside Australia for the U.S. market. In addition, the calendars will be printed in Dallas, Texas, and distributed for the U.S., Canadian, South American and Asian supporters. “The U.S. has been such a huge supporter of the Australian Firefighters Calendar over many years now,” said David Rogers, Director of the Australian Firefighters Calendar. “We are so happy to be in a position to begin donating to U.S.based charities now and into the future. Partnering with an organization as well respected as Greater Good Charities is the opportunity we have been waiting for. It was really important to us that the product was printed in the U.S. by an American company employing American workers. For the

Australian Firefighters, it’s really exciting to be involved.” The support from the Australian Firefighters Calendar to the U.S. follows a long history of goodwill between the two countries. Australians will never forget the overwhelming support received from the American people during one of the worst bushfires in recent memory. The money raised by U.S. fans went to support native Australian animals that were severely injured. One of the incredible local-Australian charities supported by the calendar donation was the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital. From humble beginnings two years ago, a handful of passionate veterinary surgeons and nurses came
together to establish Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital. Through the determination of the local community in Byron Bay, they were able to raise enough capital to build Australia’s first mobile wildlife hospital. “The support the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital received from the U.S. was phenomenal, and it continues to this day. The funds have enabled us to start building another mobile hospital to support our wildlife in the event of other wildfires,” said Stephen Van Mil, CEO of Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital. “When the bushfires occurred earlier this year, I had a nine-week-old baby at home and felt helpless for all the wildlife that were affected. So when this position popped
up on my computer, I applied straight away as I felt I could try and make a difference,” said Dr. Bree Talbot, Wildlife Veterinarian at Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital.
The Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is one of the many critical native hospitals the calendar will support again this year.

Artist: Aimee Mann Title: Queens of the Summer Hotel (SuperEgo Records) You might like if you enjoy: Aimee Mann Tell me more: Aimee Mann began to craft new music for what would be her latest album “Queens of the Summer Hotel” back in 2018 after she agreed to write songs for a stage adaptation of “Girl, Interrupted,” author Susanna Kaysen’s memoir about her psychiatric hospitalization in the late 1960s. The subject matter was perfectly suited to Mann, whose previous album was even titled “Mental Illness.” While the coronavirus pandemic put the “Girl, Interrupted” project on hold, Mann decided to collect the songs into “Queens of the Summer Hotel,” her 10th studio album. Mann’s otherworldly ability to craft songs that are literate, melodic and layered shines across “Queens of the Summer Hotel,” the album’s soundscape bolstered by acoustic piano, strings, woodwinds and horns. The Baroque pop gem
“Home By Now,” probing “Little Chameleon,” sumptuous “Suicide Is Murder,” soaring “Burn It Out” and potent “You’re Lost” are among the many stellar selections on the album. Information: AimeeMann.com.

of Wayne, Cheap Trick’s 1977 album “In Color” Tell me more: Fans of toptier melodic rock will love the Brothers Steve’s new album “Dose.” The Los Angeles troupe’s 10-track disc is loaded with smart, fun, infectious and melody-rich originals courtesy of singer-guitarists-frontmen Os Tyler and Jeff Whalen, drummer Coulter, bassist Jeff Solomon and guitarist Dylan Champion. The exhilarating opener “Get On Up” is bolstered by a joyful spirit enhanced by harmonies, handclaps and artful musicianship. The band taps into a perfect blend of early rock ‘n’ roll abandon and ‘70s power pop on the swirling “Wizard of Love.” They adorn the chamber pop “She Will Wait” with creative harmonies aplenty. They turn on a dime for the propulsive rocker “Electro-Love.” Other excellent melodic rockers include the tuneful “Sugarfoot,” Beach Boys-meets-Fountains of Wayne zing of “Griffith Observatory,” and dazzling album closer “Better Get Ready to Go.” “Dose” is a flat out great record. Prine, Jimmy Buffett Tell me more: A triple threat as singer, songwriter and guitar master, the late Steve Goodman’s growing legacy is celebrated across an outstanding new 19-track retrospective. “The Best of Steve Goodman” features studio recordings, radio sessions, live performances and even a solo demo of his enduring masterwork “City of New Orleans.” During Goodman’s short lifetime — he died of leukemia in 1984 at the age of 36 — a relatively small but dedicated following in his native Chicago and beyond purchased his albums and attended his live performances. Over the past several years, Omnivore Recordings has been reintroducing the music of Goodman to a wider audience. “The Best of Steve Goodman” is an excellent way for uninitiated listeners to fall in love with an artist the equal of many of his well-known contemporaries. The chilling “Yellow Coat,” comedic “You Never Even Call Me by My Name” (co-written with his good friend John Prine) and “This Hotel Room,” a beautiful rendition of Mike Smith’s “The Dutchman,” introspective “Video Tape” and bittersweet “A Dying Cub Fan’s Last Request” are among the stellar tracks on this essential collection. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 844-387-2537 or visit: www.DelphiLLP.com/foreclosure-information for information regarding the sale of this property, using the following Trustee Sale number assigned to this case: 5050 016140. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be available via telephone or reflected on the website listed above. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have the right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase.
