Gay Pride Weekend

“The Center” float Photo by Pat Krause

The 28th annual pride celebration started with a proclamation presentation in downtown Palm Springs and a rainbow flag raising on Friday. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 28th Annual Gay Pride weekend held a lot of activities in down town Palm Springs that started on Friday. Hotels were filled with over 6,000 people that came to the Desert for Gay Pride Weekend. This event brings a lot of money into the Desert coffers. The Sunday morning parade on Nov. 9th is one of the highlights

of this fun weekend. Over 80 entries were in the parade. Those 80 plus entries had hundreds of people, men, women and children in some of the floats plus many dogs and horses. The Palm Springs High School Band came into the middle of the parade with other bands and tuneful floats during the parade to liven the parade

with music. The parade started with the local police clearing the streets of the thousands of parade lovers. The gallery of parade spectators lined the streets, and some even had special views on second story balconies. Motorcycles were the first in the parade with many horses and riders coming next. Of course, there were

By JOSEPH PISANI AP Business News NEW YORK (AP) - Gym classes that promise a plump posterior are in high demand. A surgery that pumps fat into the buttocks is gaining popularity. And padded panties that give the appearance of a rounder rump are selling out. The U.S. booty business is getting a big bump. Companies are cashing in on growing demand from women seeking the more curvaceous figures of their favorite stars, who flaunt their fuller rear ends. Nicki Minaj raps about her “big fat” butt in “Anaconda.” Reality-star Kim Kardashian

posts photos of hers on Instagram. And in the music video for “Booty,” Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea spend four minutes rubbing their curvy bottoms together. At one point, they slap each other on the booty. As a result of the pop culture moment the butt is having, sales for Booty Pop, which hawks $22 foam padded panties on its website, are up 47 percent in the last six months from the same period last year. Susan Bloomstone, Booty Pop’s co-founder, says customers have asked for larger sizes. So, the Boston-based company will begin selling

pads that are 25 percent larger. “People just want more booty,” she says. Feel Foxy, another maker of padded panties, says 2014 has been its best year since launching nearly a decade ago. Sales are up 40 percent from a year ago, but the company declined to give sales figures. Deborah Santiago squeezed into a $40 Feel Foxy one-piece for her 30th birthday. The shapewear flattened Santiago’s waist and boosted her back side. A flat butt can ruin an outfit, says the New York stay-at-home mother of two.

the Palm Springs Mayor and Councilmen and Councilwoman in convertibles. Other cars held the many honorees, VIPs and community leaders, awards honorees and Grand Marshall. Some of the floats carried people dancing to music while others had groups of people walking, some with their dogs. The floats were on anything with wheels

like golf carts, limos, fancy autos, buses and flatbed trailers. The floats were amazing again this year. Every year the parade gets larger and the crowds get bigger. Participants spend a lot of time getting ready with flower boas and beads that were Continues on Page 2

The parade lasted almost 2 hours and as always was filled with the rainbow of colors signifying the LGBT community. Banners, Balloons and placards were carried or placed on floats honoring the LGBT of the Desert.

CV REPERTORY THEATRE GATHERING OF LUMINARIES

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The CVREP held a first of its kind luminaries event at the Annenberg Helene Galen Theatre on Bob Hope Drive that sits behind the Eisenhower hospital offices. Ron Celona asked past luminaries from the CVREP lunches if they would like to participate. Nine great celebrities said they would be honored to attend this informal gathering of Luminaries. This was not really rehearsed as the celebrities just answered questions by emcee Don Martin. Each celebrity got up and told some very funny stories about their careers in show business. Mr. Martin introduced each of the celebrities and related their impressive bios. All of them have earned numerous awards during their long careers. Nancy Daussalt sang one of her favorite songs from her career on Broadway. Carole Cook and Carol Channing sang a bit of a duet from another song they had both sang on Broadway. Carole Cook started the song, and Carol Channing got up and finished the song. The audience cheered and clapped when she was done. Sharing stories seemed to bring back memories from a past era and made it so interesting for the audience. Alex Korey was the last celebrity, and she sang such a funny song the whole audience was laughing and gave her a standing ovation when she was done. It stated as “I Don’t Want to be Rich, Famous or Powerful” and she said it was on one of her first albums. The celebrities came out into the Lobby where refreshments were served and talked with the fans and posed for photos. The guests were so eager to talk to each star and say how much fun the evening had been and there should be more of these events. The cast of the CVREP play The Chosen was also in attendance and mingled among the guests. This was a big fundraiser for CVREP to continue with all the programs and plays they produce. The other notable luminaries were Kaye Ballard, Joyce Bulifant and Roger Perry, Tom Troup, Donna Theodore.

THE FIFTH ANNUAL CENTER STAGE GALA

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Fifth Annual Center Stage Gala was held on November 7th at the Riviera Resort and Spa. The Cocktail reception and silent auction started at 5:30 with Showtime to begin at 7. The event benefits the LGBT Community Center of the Desert. The Vanguard Award was presented to Judge Vaughn R. Walker. The Legacy Award was given to Mariah Hanson, Founder and Producer of the Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend. Judge Walker is well known for his decision that struck down California’s Proposition 8 in the Hollingsworth V. Perry case. The Gala was presented by Eisenhower Medical Center. Several hundred guests filled the ballroom for the sit-down dinner. The honorary chair was Martin Massiello, Eisenhower COO. Honorary Vice-chairs were Gary Hall with David Hood and George Sellers, who are also sponsors of the event. This was another sold out gala and was a kickoff to Palm Springs Pride Weekend. The hostess and emcee were Kate Clinton, who kept the audience in stitches with her quick wit and dialogue. The nationally know singing string quartet, Well Strung, entertained the many guests attending. These 4 amazing young men sing and play various stringed instruments that thrilled everyone. The mission of the Center is to enrich the lives within the LGBT community in the Coachella Valley. The Center provides educational and social programs. They provide a weekly food bank, Suicide prevention and support for our youth, clinical counseling and a safe environment for people from all ages.

than what we’ve seen from DC in recent years. If it wasn’t so sad, it would be hilarious to hear the pundits try to spin Tuesday’s results. Republicans claim they won in a tsunami. They did well but won many very close races that could have easily had been lost. Democrats claim that the map was against them, midterm elections always wind up like this and by people not showing up to vote, they somehow endorsed the President’s policies! Tuesday’s results said that we were tired of the business as usual in Washington DC. Plain and simple. If we are truly going to enter a new period of change, there also needs to be a change from the top of the parties. The toxic speech and the spiteful actions of the party leaders just can’t be ignored. If we want a breath of fresh air in DC, wouldn’t it be nice for the current leaders (McConnell, Boehner, Reid and Pelosi) to step down and let new members take up the task of running the country? George Washington could have been President until his death if he so desired. However, he knew that this country is much greater than any one person, group or ideology. Just days after the elections, political leaders started back with the same-old rhetoric. It would be a horrible mistake

for the Republicans to start the new term by trying to overturn all the things that they have disagreed with from the past six years. We need to move forward. If existing legislation can be improved, then that should be done. Nevertheless, to focus on just repealing laws that they don’t like will lead to a deeper quagmire and more division in our country. From a business point of view, there are so many positives that can be enacted. The economy needs a boost and not more financial manipulation

or new debt. There are roughly 50 job bills that were passed by the House but went nowhere in the Senate. Let’s revisit those and see which ones will entice corporations to loosen their purse strings. We need new factories. We need higherpaying jobs in the US. We need to bring manufacturing back to the US. We need to repatriate trillions of dollars that are being held offshore. Our infrastructure is in terrible need of attention. Energy policies need to be streamlined, and a strategic plan enacted. There are more

banking laws on the books than probably for anything else. Even so, we have so many scandals regularly. Let’s get banks back to lending money to Main Street instead of worrying about their next huge Wall Street deal. $4 billion was spent on the mid-term elections. What a horrible waste of resources if we don’t see major changes.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL When buying a common i n t e re s t p ro p e r t y, y o u automatically become a member of an association. Here are a “baker’s dozen” of items to consider first: 1. Read the CC&Rs. The document is a joint agreement between all the owners regarding the property, and it binds you when you become an owner – so read it before you take ownership. Look for restrictions regarding how you use your property – Are there pet limits? Can you park your RV in the driveway? Are there restrictions against hard floors (in multi-story buildings)? You will want to know that before you own.

2. Check the reserves d i s c l o s u re s . Prudent associations set aside money each month to offset the ongoing deterioration of major capital components (roofs, asphalt, paint, etc). Associations with little money saved in reserves are more likely to impose special assessments against the members when major refurbishments are needed. Unfunded reserve accounts are a form of hidden debt not reflected on the balance sheet. 3. It isn’t about “me,” it’s about “us”. Common interest communities are just that – communities. The HOA is not “them,” it’s “us”. 4. In Califor nia, the common interest development (aka “HOA”) law is so complicated it is difficult to operate one without professional help. If the association has no professional manager, it is probably innocently violating many laws (and the board is probably working too hard as free managers of the community). 5. The board members are homeowners also, and they pay the same assessments you do. They volunteer their time to handle things you don’t have to worry about. If you want to worry about those things,

volunteer for the board. 6. No license or credential is required in California to manage associations – ask about the reputation and credentials of the manager. 7. I f you buy a condominium, understand that “common area”, the shared property, is probably a lot more than you think. It may include even the drywall underneath your paint, or the floor underneath your carpeting. 8. In associations it is NOT better to ask for forgiveness than permission. You may be required to apply in writing to the association before you make changes to your home (and possibly to your yard). 9. Never assume the board is not enforcing a rule or restriction, so that it is OK for you to ignore it – the association’s enforcement actions are normally in closed session, and you may be unaware of the board’s actions against violators… until you become one. 10. HOA managers don’t make decisions – managers advise the board, and then implement board decisions and policy. 11. Individual directors have no power to make decisions - HOA leadership is a team

sport, and the board makes decisions, not one director (even if President). 12. Read the Community Association Institute “Introduction to Community Association Living”. The free download can be found at www.caionline.org. Click on “education” then “education for homeowners”. 13. It’s all about being a good neighbor. Consideration is the key to happy and successful association living. A selfcentered focus is a path leading to conflict and unhappiness with the neighbors in the association. Common interest development associations are a large and increasing sector of the housing market. Look before you leap, embrace the benefits (and responsibilities) of common interest community living, and have a positive experience!

Indexed Linked product vs. The Returns of Stock Market of a lot higher returns. This is primarily a benefit from our low interest rate environment. When the next correction occurs, it could be the biggest ever, as corrections historically come in threes; the first, the smaller investor gets out; the second, the medium investor gets out; the third, large investors get out, making the market correction much greater. We have had 2 previous corrections to date in this market cycle. The correction which occurred just a couple of weeks ago was only a rumbling of things to come. That drop in the market alone, would wipe out all gains of the year. Our low gasoline prices are keeping the market up for now. However, the indicators are real

and forecast a dramatic change. The return of Indexed products is based on a specific index return for the period you choose; annual, monthly, etc. Most of our clients who were simply receiving credits based upon the return of the S & P 500 for the past Six years have experienced returns averaging from 6-8 percent, not a bad return, while you enjoy guaranteed safety of principal and all earned credits. However, the Stock Market can achieve much higher returns, but to win in the market; you must be very savvy and donate all your time to it and be able to financially handle a loss. Indexed products also offer affordable protection for long-

term care and critical illness, while offering guaranteed income riders and tax-free withdrawals and tax-free death benefits. It is a great consideration for those who want to keep their “Serious money Safe.

Within the Indexed market-type of products today, many companies are offering much better products than last year. By Desert Star Staff The holidays can be an expensive time for decorating, entertaining and shopping. Luckily, there are easy ways to save this holiday season, so you can spend more time celebrating and less time stressing over expenses. Create: Typically, one of the largest expenses during the holiday season is gifts for friends and family. Instead of spending a fortune on storebought presents, consider creating a DIY gift. For example, you can place dry ingredients inside a canning jar with an easy-to-follow recipe for sugar cookies or holiday pancakes for a creative, inexpensive gift. Gift cards dressed up with a festive greeting card also makes a great present. Another option is to look for an auto-renewal program that allows you to give a practical gift like diapers, pet

food and more to a recipient on a weekly or monthly basis. Cook: One of the best parts about the holidays is baking delicious treats for the whole family to enjoy. A holiday favorite is fruit cake, so bake up something tasty like date nut bread using simple ingredients like flour, milk and eggs that can be bought from a discount retailer like Dollar General. Clean: The holidays are often about spending time with family and friends, which means you could be doing a lot more entertaining than usual at your home. Get your home holidayready by making a plan for house-cleaning. Straighten up before cleaning, so the process is expedited. To save on cleaning supplies, consider buying store brands, rather than name brand products. Be sure to also add the smells of the season with scented

candles and electric warmers. Celebrate: Adorning your home with holiday decorations can really get your family in the spirit. Deals on dollar ornaments, festive garland, decorative trees and fun wreaths can help you to

make your home festive without breaking the bank. F o r m o re t i p s o n holiday savings and DIY gift and decoration ideas, you can visit your local Dollar General or go online to

www.dollargeneral.com. By spending carefully, you can celebrate affordably and in style, without breaking the bank.

Neil Sedaka At The McCallum Theatre By Desert Star Staff S i n g e r. S o n g w r i t e r. Composer. Pianist. Author. These are just a few of the words used to describe Neil Sedaka. Through the generosity of Patrick and Edeltraud McCarthy, the McCallum Theatre welcomes the return of Neil Sedaka for two performances on Saturday, December 6, at 8:00pm and Sunday, December 7, at 3:00pm. Neil catapulted into stardom after Connie Francis recorded his “Stupid Cupid.” She then sang the theme song Neil and Howard wrote for the 1960 MGM film “Where the Boys Are.” Rhythm and blues stars Clyde McPhatter and LaVern Baker also scored hits with Neil’s songs. As a result of these hits, Neil signed with RCA as a writer and performer of his own material. He soon recorded chart toppers “The Diary,” “Oh! Carol,” “ Stairway to Heaven,” “Calendar Girl,” “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen,” “Next Door To An Angel,” and “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.” His music became distinguished for a unique recording style involving multi-tracking his own voice. In 1964, American music

changed drastically when The Beatles launched The British Invasion. It became harder for male solo artists to continue their music careers. Due to his talents as a songwriter, Neil prevailed, writing hit songs for other artists including Frank Sinatra (“The Hungry Years”), Elvis Presley (“Solitaire”), and The Fifth Dimension (“Workin’ on a Groovy Thing”), among others. Among the honors he has received, Neil has been inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, had a street named after him in his hometown of Brooklyn, and was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2007, Neil released The Definitive Collection, a careerspanning retrospective in honor of his 50th Anniversary in show business. Inspired by his grandchildren, Neil released Waking Up is Hard to Do,a collection of his hits reinvented as children’s songs. He returned to his classical roots, composing his first symphonic piece, “Joie De Vivre,” and his piano concerto, “Manhattan Intermezzo;” he recorded both with the Philharmonia

Orchestra of London. Neil recently released The Real Neil, a CD of new material and a few classics. “The most challenging task for a songwriter is to write a simple tune but still bring an emotional feeling to it,” says Neil. “After 60 years of writing, I am very proud of these new songs. This is my

first acoustic album. Piano and voice, the pure form of the song. The songs are very personal and come from my soul.” Through the generosity of Patrick and Edeltraud McCarthy, the McCallum Theatre presents Neil Sedaka for two performances, Saturday, December 6, at 8:00pm and

Sunday, December 7, at 3:00pm. Tickets for both performances are $99, $89, $79 and $59 and are available at the Theatre’s web site at www.mccallumtheatre. com, or by calling the McCallum Theatre box office at (760) 340ARTS. By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA--Palm Springs Windmill Tours is now open and offering the only windmill farm tour that takes visitors up close and personal with the Coachella Valley’s most recognizable landmarks. The tours operate daily at 9 am, noon, and 3 pm, and take visitors “behind the fence” to a working windmill farm, then explore other

The tours are approximately one and one-half hours and cost $35 for adults and $17.50 for children. “Palm Springs Windmill Tours is the only windmill tour company that takes its guests up close to actual windmills on the farm,” said David Hixon, of Palm Springs Windmill Tours. “We show our guests the

history of windmill operations here since the 1980’s, and also explore newer alternative energy production with a stops at a solar panel field and the valley’s new natural gas peaking facility.” Palm Springs Windmill Tours is also the only windmill farm tour endorsed by the Desert Wind Energy Association. In 1982, the first wind farm was developed in the

Palm Springs flats of the San Gorgornio Pass. Today, more than 4,000 windmills are spread out over 70 square miles and produce enough electricity to power Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley. In the Palm Springs area, about 2,000 windmills exist, ranging in height from 105 feet to the height of a 45-story building. The tours begin at Palm

to continue to serve the citizens of Desert Hot Springs for years to come,” said Shea ‘The DHS Community Task force, a non-profit 501c-3, has been raising tax deductible donations to keep the pool, at 8th and Cactus, open to provide swim programs for our senior’s families and children of all ages. These are private funds similar to those raised for the Orca Mural. This event is sponsored by both the Task Force and Rene’s Aquatics” she concluded. “According to local folk lore, the one and only, Frank Sinatra, in 1974, gave the money needed to complete the pool on one condition: the pool was NOT to be named after him” this from Larry Buchanan of the historical society. There is much history in the Wardman saga as, he and his associate, L. W. Coffee, dug the first hole and discovered water at 132 degrees back in

1932. After drilling a second one where cold water was found, the significance of the healing powers of the natural mineral waters became apparent to them both. Coffee begins the first spa accessible to the general public, on the corner of 8th and Palm, where Coffee’s Hot Mineral Baths began receiving guests in the early ‘40’s. Coffee is given the nod for developing DHS into the spa city, yet without Wardman’s financial backing and support; the city might look quite different and Wardman Park may not be there for the community. ‘War Ink’ Shows Veterans’ Images of Combat

Pleasant Hill, Calif. – As Americans struggle to find meaningful ways to honor the nation’s 2.6 million Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, a powerful new online exhibit, WAR INK, opens today to support those efforts. The honest and emotionally raw collection of original video, photography and audio interviews uses the memorial tattoos and words of 24 veterans to open a dialogue between civilians and returning vets. “WAR INK emerged out of a need to recognize veterans’ stories of service and

sacrifices and to bridge the divide between the veteran and civilian communities,” says WAR INK co-creator Jason Deitch, a former Army medic and military sociologist. “This is both an exhibit and a forum, using tattoos as a springboard for veterans to share their stories.” “Veterans need ways to reconnect with their communities,” says Chris Brown, WAR INK co-creator and senior manager at the Contra Costa County Library, which will launch the program along with over 20 other libraries throughout California. “As

librarians, we’re pleased to play a part in bridging that gap and sharing the poignant stories of our veterans.” The sudden transition from war to civilian life leaves many vets facing deep feelings of alienation and isolation. Tattoos, Brown and Deitch explain, are a shared form of expression between many civilians and vets, and offer a unique gateway to conversations, which can begin to build that community. “Every tattoo on my body tells a story,” says WAR INK veteran Ron “Doc” Riviera of Santa Cruz, California. “If people just asked, they wouldn’t get a

movie or a book; they would get the real thing.” Elegantly produced, WAR INK walks visitors through four multimedia chapters. In the veterans’ own words, they remind guests that “We Were You” by sharing their experiences before they entered the military. The “Changed Forever” chapter is a searing examination of the real cost of war, followed by “Living Scars,” a candid look at the physical and emotional wounds of their military experiences. The exhibit’s final chapter, “Living Not Surviving,” tells of the

challenges veterans face, but also of their strength and resilience as they try to return to their communities.” To tell the WAR INK story, Dietch and Brown assembled an impressive coalition of diverse partners, including the StoryCorps Military Voices Initiative and premier photographer Johann Wolf. Video for the site was directed by filmmaker Rebecca Murga, and the online exhibit was designed by Favorite Medium. Visit the WAR INK exhibit at www.warink.org.

By KMIR News Staf LOS ANGELES (AP) - NBC is airing an unusual hat-trick series crossover. Episodes of three of the network’s dramas, “Chicago Fire,” ‘’Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Chicago P.D.,” will share a story line about an effort to crack a child pornography ring. The three-parter begins at 10 p.m. EST Tuesday on “Chicago Fire” and wraps up Wednesday on the two other NBC dramas airing back to back from 9-11 p.m. EST.

Making the ambitious crossover feasible: All the shows are produced by Wolf Films in association with Universal Television. Producer Dick Wolf said linking the two Chicago-based shows made sense, while drawing in New York-based “Law & Order: SVU” was a “little tricky.” “But it wasn’t too far-fetched to develop a story about child pornography that crosses state lines,” Wolf said, which he called a sad reflection of reality. Palm Springs Architecture and Design Museum Opens By Pamela Price The opening of the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center; Edwards Harris Pavilion in downtown Palm Springs heralds a new era in the recognition and preservation of a mid-century modern design. Called the A+D, for short, the center offers architecture and design-related exhibits, research and storage area for the museum’s collections and an ongoing schedule for educational and community programs year round. The overall project was funded 100 % by a combination of founding donors, grants and support from the City of Palm Springs. After the Palm Springs, Art Museum acquired the former Santa Fe Federal Savings and Loan building in 2011, Marmol Radziner handled the rehabilitation. A+D opens the season with an inaugural exhibit, An Eloquent Modernist: E. Stewart Williams, Architect on display through

Feb. 22nd , 2015. The exhibition features film clips, original renderings, photographs and drawings reflecting Mr. William’s 50-year career. The opening of the A + D has created several tour opportunities such as The Modern Tour, the official tour of the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center. This is an exclusive curated tour of Palm Springs’ collection of modern architecture and design featuring Michael Stern, author of the best-selling Rizzoli publication, “Julius Shulman: Desert Modern,” details at TheModernTour.com (760) 904-0904. Healing Through the Power of Music!!!

By Desert Star Staff The science of healing through music is well documented, and valley residents are taking the plunge. Music therapy has been shown to improve quality of life scores for adolescents with emotional and behavioral problems, and to help adults enhance coping skills in response to stressful life events. And yet, there has been 50% reduction in music program’s country wide in the last seven years. Local music producer Adon

Icon has tapped into the healing power that music brings. He has been producing for industry and upcoming artist since 1997 and is doing a community outreach program to give people the opportunity that comes with the joys of recording music. “I have personally seen the value of recording someone and then hearing their own vocal playback. (Interesting idea, but probably not one that true believers will ever embrace.) This series also uncovers the alien dimension within secret codes, deadly cults, mega-disasters and plagues and alien connections to dinosaurs, NASA and even the Third Reich. It also considers time travel, underwater UFO activity, ancient Martian civilizations and the possibility that some children have alien DNA. (That may be the reason why you can’t always reason with your kids.) The questions raised in the series are fun to ponder. Suggested retail price: $99.98.

US Spends Money on Drug and no one Knows how it Works

By KMIR News Staff Americans spent over $7.5 billion on one drug over a oneyear period ‒ more than any other medication. And yet no one knows how the powerful pill works. But that doesn’t keep Big Pharma from marketing it for a multitude of disorders. “Quick: what’s the top-selling drug in the United States?” the Daily Beast asked. “Prozac? Viagra? Maybe something for heart disease?” The answer is actually Abilify (aripiprazole), a powerful antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, among other major psychiatric conditions. Americans spent over $7.5 billion on the drug between October 2013 and September 2014, with nearly 8.8 million prescriptions filled per month in that same time period, Medscape Medical News reported. The sales of aripiprazole were more than all other major antidepressants combined. Bristol-Meyers Squibb (BMS) initially developed Abilify to treat schizophrenia ‒ a disease affecting only one percent of Americans. A few years later, it was approved for bipolar disorder, an illness that an additional 1.5 percent of Americans battle. But then the

12

Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which approves and regulates all medications in the US, allowed the drug to be used in conjunction with other medications to treat major depressive disorder, MedShadow Foundation’s Suzanne B. Robotti reported. Depression affects 16 million people in the US, Dr. Candida Fink, an expert in bipolar disease, pointed out to Robotti, adding that it is a significant and lethal disease. Once the drug was able to be marketed as an add-on for depression, its sales soared. (BMS spends $121 million on promoting Abilify each year, according to MedShadow.) Its advertisements tout that the drug works “like a thermostat to restore balance,” and that “[when] activity of key brain chemicals is too high, Abilify lowers it…. When activity of key brain chemicals is too low, Abilify raises it.” The Daily Beast likened the drug to “a bazooka to conventional anti-depressants’ revolver.” That’s about as close as anyone gets to explaining how the powerful, atypical antipsychotic works. “Our promotional activities focus on the description of the mechanism of action of

aripiprazole as it is written” in the standardized United States Product Insert (USPI), a spokesperson for Otsuka, which produces Abilify with BristolMeyers Squibb, told the Daily Beast. But the USPI doesn’t shed any light on how the drug works. In fact, it says that the “mechanism of action of aripiprazole… is unknown.” It suggests a “proposed” way of working, but does not list any evidence supporting the theory. The FDA also says the way Abilify works is “unknown.” A page called “How Abilify is thought to work” on the the drug’s website notes, “Keep in mind that the exact way ABILIFY works has not been fully determined.” An article in PLoS Medicine, a peer-reviewed journal, called the advertisements “questionable,” asking “whether the complexities of treating bipolar disorder (with its unknown etiology and well-known heterogeneity in response to treatment) are accurately portrayed as a reliable, mechanical thermostat.” “However,” the authors noted, “consumers are likely to find such advertisements compelling.” The lack of government regulation or outcry from professional associations November 12, 2014

about Otsuka’s claims, they hypothesized, “significantly contributes to the process of disease mongering.” “The advertising is everywhere,” Fink told Robotti. “The effects of the advertising are very vivid to me, I see it all the time. I talk to my patients about making the best decision for them and not rely on advertising. But that’s certainly a big part of why Abilify is selling as much as it is ‒ because of the advertising.” And patients who rely on television ads are the targets of what the PLoS authors describe as disease mongering, which is another way for pharmaceutical companies to grow sales. “Consumers who view such advertisements are likely to characterize their problems in a manner congruent with industry promotion and to request welladvertised pharmaceuticals as treatment,” they wrote. “At

a bare minimum, increased medicalization will result; in some cases, disease mongering may indeed be an appropriate characterization.” Abilify is also used to treat irritability and symptoms of aggression, mood swings, temper tantrums and self-injury related to autistic disorder in children who are at least 6 years old, Drugs.com noted. Although aripiprazole is the top grossing medication in the US, it is only the 13th most prescribed. Crestor, a cholesterol-lowering drug, edged out Synthroid, a hypothyroid medication, for the top spot, with almost 22.28 million a month between October and September, compared to 22.56 million per month. But Crestor’s sales were almost $5.8 billion over that one year period, while Synthroid’s totalled less than $1 billion, according to Medscape. www.desertstarweekly.com

Businesses Cash in as Women Chase Bigger Cutts Continued from Page 1

Lopez is her butt idol. “I always wanted a big butt,” Santiago says. To be sure, the desire for big butts isn’t new. Large booties long have been preferable in Latino and black communities, says Dr. Dionne Stephens, an associate psychology professor at Florida International University. But recently, the desire for a bigger bottom became more mainstream, in large part due to pop culture influences. “When people see things repeated on TV more and more, it becomes normalized,” Stephens says. The interest in larger hind parts seems to have started when Kardashian began

appearing in a reality TV show “Keeping up with the Kardashians” seven years ago. In a 2011 episode, she had an X-ray to prove she didn’t have butt implants. Kardashian still frequently posts shots of her backside to her 21 million Instagram followers. But the desire for big buns has intensified. This summer, the music video for “Anaconda” that showed Minaj in a pink thong was viewed 19.6 million times within 24 hours of its release - a record for music video site Vevo. It has racked up nearly 300 million views. Some businesses that specialize in butts say pop culture has had a direct impact

on their bottom line. A Brazilian butt lift, in which fat is sucked from a patient’s stomach, love handles or back and put into their buttocks and hips, is increasingly popular in the U.S. This type of surgery, along with buttock implants, was the fastest-growing plastic surgery last year, with more than 11,000 procedures, up 58 percent from 2012, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Dr. Matthew Schulman, who performs the procedure in New York, says this year has been busier than last. Schulman, who charges $10,000 to $13,000 for the three-hour surgery, does six to eight Brazilian butt lifts weekly,

up about 25 percent from a year ago. He says when he asks patients which celebrity butt they want, the top names are Kardashian, Minaj and Lopez. The downside is that women desperate for cheap options have risked their lives, going to phony doctors that inject silicone, and even bathroom caulk, into their buttocks. Deaths have been reported in Miami, New York, Las Vegas and Jackson, Mississippi. Another problem is doctors performing surgeries that don’t have experience: Schulman says about 20 percent of his patients to him so he can fix lumps, bumps and uneven

butt cheeks done by unskilled doctors. Not everyone is trying surgery, though. DailyBurn, which streams workout videos, says views for its “Butt, Hips and Thighs” video doubled in January and have remained popular. At a gym in Boston, there’s a waitlist for a $30 class that features 120 squats in 45 minutes. The class, Booty by Brabants, was started by Kelly Brabants a year ago. Brabants starts most classes with Lopez’s “Booty” song. “Every girl now wants a booty,” Brabants said.

S P O RT S Desert Schools Prep for Postseason Football BY DANIEL MARINELLI

Tyler Hawkins (2) will need to play his best football for the Palm Springs Indians to make it all the way to the championship. (Photo by Dan Marinelli) COACHELLA VALLEY – The CIF-SS Eastern Division playoffs are set to start this Friday, with a plethora of desert teams ready to take the field under the bright lights. It was no surprise that the league-winning La Quinta Blackhawks (6-0 Desert Valley League, 8-2 overall), and the Palm Springs Indians (5-1 DVL, 8-2 overall) grabbed the one and two seeds out of the DVL; the only question was the third seed that the league was guaranteed. The Indians’ defeat of the Cathedral City Lions (3-3 DVL, 5-5 overall) and the Xavier Prep Saints’ (3-3 DVL, 5-5 overall) defeat of the Palm Desert

Aztecs (3-3 DVL, 3-7 overall) on the final day of the season left the Lions, Aztecs and Saints in a three-way tie for the third. In most other leagues, a tie would come down to a coin flip but not in this special case. In an attempt to decide ties in a more fair way than flipping a coin, the DVL constitution allots points for different types of wins; three points for a league win in regulation, two points for a win in overtime and even a single point for simply getting to overtime and losing. Here is the point breakdown for the three schools: Xavier Prep finished with eight points because of two regulation league wins and the

win in overtime. Thus, Palm Desert ended up grabbing the DVL’s third seed, finishing with 10 points from three regulation league wins and the crucial point from Friday’s loss in overtime. Finally, ending the season with nine points from three regulation league wins, Cathedral City snuck in the postseason with an at-large bid. Unfortunately for the Saints – DVL’s newest team – despite the head-to-head win against the Aztecs, they will be not be participating in the Eastern Division playoffs this year. Had Xavier Prep won in regulation, all three teams would have finished with nine points, and

then a coin flip would have been required to break the tie between the schools. “This does not wash away the efforts and heroics of our athletes and the incredible season they had in the face of much scrutiny and doubt,” Xavier Prep AD Mark Campbell wrote on Facebook in letter to the school. “They will forever remain the Kings of Cook St. Friday’s game will live on forever and the fruits of their labor will result in many championships and banners in the near future.” There’s always next year for the Kings of Cook Street but for the other four schools, there is now. On Friday, La Quinta welcomes the Apple Valley Sun Devils (1-4 Mojave River League, 3-7 overall), the last place team from one of the better conferences in Southern California. On paper, La Quinta appears to be the favorite but with concerns over quarterback Michael Avina’s leg injury from a few weeks ago, head coach Dan Armstrong is not overlooking any team. “I’m watching Apple Valley right now and Apple Valley is probably one of the best 3-7 teams I’ve seen,” Coach Armstrong said. “They moved the ball up and down the field on Kaiser, they moved the ball on Serrano and Oak Hills – who are both ranked really high. They just seem to give up inopportune plays at the wrong time. They fumbled plays at the goal line, fumbled punts at the wrong time, so they were not getting very many breaks.” La Quinta may not be at full strength for its playoff opener but Palm Springs is 100 percent, and looking to

make some serious noise this postseason. With a dynamic passing game and a secondary that anchors the defense, the Indians start at home against a decent Moreno Valley Vikings (3-2 Mountain Valley, 8-2 overall) squad that finished second in a lackluster Mountain Valley League. Palm Springs will have an added advantage, as the Vikings will be without its starting quarterback due to an early season-ending leg injury. Who did the Aztecs draw for narrowly sneaking into the playoffs? Oh, just a road matchup with the Serrano Diamonbacks (4-1 Mojave River League, 9-1 overall), one of the best teams in the Eastern Division. Rounding out the final DVL team to make the playoffs, Cathedral City will go on the road to face the Oak Hills Bulldogs (5-0 Mojave River League, 8-2 overall), a team that MaxPreps.com has ranked 51 in the state of California, and the highest ranked team in the bracket. De Anza League As the De Anza League winners, the Shadow Hills Knights (6-0 De Anza, 8-2 overall) earned a favorable draw and have a promising path to the CIF-SS Northwest Division championship. The Knights open the playoffs at home against the Riversidebased Notre Dame Titans (2-3 Ambassador League, 6-4 overall) on Friday. All playoff games are scheduled to start at 7 pm. Two Ebola Monitored Cases in Riverside County Cleared By KMIR News Staff Two Riverside County residents monitored following their return from West African countries impacted by Ebola do not have the potentially fatal disease, according to Dr. Cameron Kaiser, Riverside County Department of Public Health. Dr. Kaiser said neither of the “low-risk’’ people showed any symptoms of Ebola during 21 days of active monitoring. The residents, whose names are being withheld, took their temperatures with a digital

thermometer twice a day and reported the readings to the health department. It was not immediately known when the two returned from West Africa, but county public health spokesman Jose Arballo Jr. said the monitoring ended over the weekend. “The individuals’ cooperation made the entire process go much more smoother,’’ Kaiser said. “They showed great patience and it was not always easy, but the system worked and I greatly appreciate their cooperation.’’ The Riverside County

residents are not related to each other and traveled separately. They stayed in their respective homes and were never required to remain indoors, Arballo said. County officials said the pair traveled to one of the three West African countries impacted by the Ebola outbreak: Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Ebola is marked by fever, vomiting, severe headaches and muscle pain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Source: KMIR
