Star is at the corner of Tahquitz Canyon Way and North Palm Canyon Drive. Terri Ketover is well known in the desert as a Community Leader, local

philanthropist and volunteer. She had earned many awards and accolades in her career. Over 150 people attended the dedication, including long-time

more. In addition, she has been a big supporter of DAP Health for many years. This busy lady has also co-chaired the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival Angel Opening and Continues on Page 2

Honoring Our Heroes

By Jackie Devereaux Desert Hot Springs, Calif. Local dignitaries and business leaders honored our military heroes at Veterans Park last Thursday with a colorful, flagwaving ceremony. About 100 people attended and all were surprised when four military fighter planes from World War II flew over the crowd midway through the ceremony. “Stop, everyone, look up! We’ve got a flyby!” said Desert Hot Springs Mayor Scott Matas excitedly and pointing to the sky. The speaker, Bishop Shepard stopped, the crowd looked up and watched in amazement as the military planes flew slowly from the southeast then turned west past the crowd

and then south back over the city towards the airport and Palm Springs Air Museum. “Wow, that was fantastic,” said Mindy Salas, a longtime Desert Hot Springs native. “Did they choreograph that?” she asked. No, they did not choreograph it for the mayor and other dignitaries were all surprised by the flyover. “Maybe it’s a sign from above.” After Bishop Shepard finished his heart-felt prayer for the veterans who served our country, it was Royal Emerald Pharmaceuticals Founder and CEO Mark Crozier who stole the show with a real-life story about his 40 years serving as a U.S. Army Ranger and as a federal police chief. Crozier said he was the

only man in his Ranger unit who made it back alive (of six guys) and that he thinks about his buddies every day. “I got to come back and can enjoy cheeseburgers, but they can’t,” Crozier told the crowd, noting that cheeseburgers where his favorite meal. “We get to enjoy the freedoms (every day) that they died for. All you veterans out there know what I’m talking about. You know what I feel. You know exactly what I’m saying.” Crozier then presented a check for $1,000 to the Desert Hot Springs Community Task Force for the Shea’s Veteran Center. “I want to buy every veteran over there Continues on Page 7

She has been recognized by the White House as the founder of International ‘Do The Right Thing,’ which has helped thousands of children nationwide. Her Star was announced a couple of years ago, but Covid 19 had to be postponed until now. Her many local awards included DAP Health’s 100 Women Award, Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce Athena Leadership Award and the 2016 AIDS Assistance Program’s Gloria Greene Inspiration Award. The PSWIFT Broken Glass Award and DAP’s Everyday Heroes award, to name a few.

There were many guest speakers, all extolling her very many accomplishments, nationally and locally. Nona Watson welcomed the guests, and Tom Truhe acted as Emcee. Other speakers were Michael Childers, David Brinkman, Garry Keif, David Zippel. They all gave glowing accounts of her achievements, but none offered a more brilliant and informational version than her husband, Dr. Bart Ketover, who knew it all. Ketover told of her husband volunteering his services to help people with eyesight problems free of charge many times. Dr. Bart, as many know him, is a local eye specialist. A wine and appetizers event followed the dedication.

One Night Only Concert at the McCallum Theatre

Jason Graae and Klea Blackhurst singing Those Were The Days By Pat Krause Michael Childers, One Night Only Concert is Back. Covid stopped it last year. This concert of fabulous singers is always a highlight at the McCallum each year. The 15th edition of ‘One Night Only Concert’ was on Nov 10, 2021. People were asked to show a vaccine card to enter and wear a mask during the performance in the closeness of the Theatre. But that did not stop them from filling the McCallum Theatre to see these fantastic singers. The concert theme was, Back To The ‘70s. Great music was written then, and these singers brought the songs to the audience; it was nostalgia time for almost everyone as each probably had great memories of that time in their lives. The singers/actors are award winners and Broadway stars. Many return each year to perform in this concert. The show benefits the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center for

Well-known singers/actors Freda Payne, Liz Callaway and Ann Hampton Callaway, Jason Graae, Lucie Arnaz, and Lily Tomlin were among the stars. Tomlin gave the opening remarks and got a standing ovation and laughs from the crowd. Some of the songs were = She’s a Lady, You’re No Good, The Way We Were, You Light Up My Life, Ain’t Misbehaving, and Bridge Over Troubled Waters, to name a few. One final song had the whole cast on the stage singing, I Will Survive. At the concert’s end, the audience got on their feet for a standing ovation as colorful streamers came down on the singers. Micheal Childers’s birthday was the following day. Backstage the cast gathered around him to sing happy birthday to him before the cast photo. Guests were treated

to an after-party in a huge white tent near the back of the Theater. Delicious food and drinks were served buffet style as guests ate their food on white tablecloth-covered tables. It was very intimate

Latino Advocates Slam California’s New Redistricting Maps By Suzanne Potter/PNS SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Latino civil-rights groups criticize the draft legislative maps just released by the California Citizens’ Redistricting Commission, saying they give the community short shrift. The 2020 census showed Latinos accounted for more than two-thirds of the state’s population growth over the last decade. Arturo Vargas, CEO of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, called the maps a hatchet job that might reduce Latino influence rather than increase it. “They’re sacrificing the voting rights of protected

desert

voters over trying to keep counties whole,” Vargas asserted. “Preserving county and city lines should be secondary to complying with the Voting Rights Act.” People can find the draft maps and leave a public comment at wedrawthelinesca. org. In addition, the commission will be taking public comments at six meetings tomorrow through next Tuesday. Then comes more than a dozen line-drawing meetings. The final report meeting is set for Dec. 21. The Mexican American Legal Defense Fund submitted proposed maps designed to give Latinos a fair opportunity to elect candidates of their choice based on the population. But Vargas pointed out the maps unnecessarily break

up Latino areas, particularly in Southeast Los Angeles. “And maps that the prior commission drew that unified some Latino communities

of interest, they appear to be completely dismantled,” Vargas observed. NALEO encouraged people to make their voices

heard. Advocates noted if the final maps don’t change significantly, the dispute may need to be settled in court.

President Biden Signs Historic Infrastructure Deal Ken Calvert Californians are getting a historic win today; no thanks to Ken Calvert

By Desert Star Staff Today, President Biden signed into law the wildly popular bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that Democrats worked to pass to deliver accurate results for families and workers across California. But you won’t see Rep. Ken Calvert celebrating this historic accomplishment -because he sided with party bosses and voted against the once-in-a-generation investment that will strengthen America’s Infrastructure and create millions of jobs. This infrastructure deal marks the most significant action on our nation’s infrastructure and competitiveness in nearly a century. Despite Ken Calvert’s reckless opposition, thanks to the work of President Biden and Congressional Democrats, families across California will now be able to feel the effects of the bill’s gamechanging investments directly. From fixing California’s crumbling roads and bridges, easing inflation, providing millions of Americans with good-paying union jobs, ensuring every Californian has access to high-speed internet, delivering clean water to homes and schools, modernizing public transit, and helping save our environment from the climate crisis,

families and workers across CA-42 will see the impacts of this legislation in nearly every corner of their lives. “If Ken Calvert had his way, our nation’s crumbling infrastructure would continue

to fall into disrepair,” said DCCC Spokesperson Helen Kalla. “Ken Calvert already proved that he would rather side with party bosses than deliver wins for CA-42. Unfortunately, the

signing of this once-in-ageneration legislation serves as a reminder that while Democrats are delivering, voters cannot rely on Ken Calvert to do the same.”

It is soon time for you to help others, to offer support and resources, time and money, care and attention. Then you too become one who receives. At the heart of Gemini, under that mantle of thought, is love and wisdom from Venus.

CANCER It’s important to be part of a religious or spiritual group. It’s also important not to be isolated. You need a balance between being solitary and being out and about among people. Being social is sometimes difficult. You sense the depths within others. You see how others are in need and you see how “love underlies the happenings of the times and all events.” Love happens to be the nature of Pisces, too. Love surrounds us all the time. Heaven and earth are made of it.

VIRGO New ideas, concepts, school, study, traveling, the art of archery, horseback riding or horse husbandry, publishing, and studying ancient philosophies, one or more of these, call you to attention. You seek justice in all areas of life. You are like King Solomon. Many recognize your gifts, talents and qualities. Listening is your best way of understanding what others need. Remain attentive. Trump loses bid to keep White House docs secret in Capitol riot probe By Desert Star Staff A US District Judge has rejected former President Donald Trump’s bid to prevent a congressional committee from securing his White House records as part of an investigation into the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill. Issuing the ruling on Tuesday night, Judge Tanya Chutkan rejected Trump’s attempt to prevent more than 700 pages of records produced during his presidency from being transferred from the National Archives to the January 6 committee. “Presidents are not kings, and the plaintiff is not president,” Chutkan declared, adding that “the public interest lies in permitting, not enjoining, the combined will of the legislative and executive branches to study the events that led to and occurred on January 6.” The congressional committee, established in the House of Representatives, has subpoenaed multiple officials from the Trump White House and phone records,

visitor logs, and documents. It is working to establish the events that led up to the riot and whether the former president had prior knowledge of what would occur or played any role in the incident. Trump has attempted to use executive privilege to prevent the release of the documents. However, the judge was clear that it was up to the incumbent president to decide which documents should be turned over or withheld to “protect executive branch interests.” Executive privilege gives the president and officials serving in the White House the power to withhold information and documentation from the judicial and legislative branches. Legal representatives for the former president have told the court he plans to appeal the ruling, with the case potentially being dragged out for the foreseeable future. However, Taylor Budowich, his spokesperson, stated after the verdict, Trump was fighting for the right of US president’s past and present to invoke executive

privilege and was committed to “seeing this process through.” Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS), who heads up the January 6 committee, has accused Trump of attempting “to delay and obstruct” the investigation. The Democrats have accused Trump of being involved in the riot, having spoken at the rally directly before the insurrection. It’s claimed he used incendiary language in a brief speech, November 17, 2021

riling up the crowd, who were demonstrating against the outcome of the 2020 election before around a thousand of them swarmed the Capitol as Congress’ certification of Joe Biden’s victory was underway. Hundreds of those involved were swiftly arrested and charged over their participation. One protester – an unarmed woman named Ashli Babbitt, who was attempting to breach a barricaded door – was killed by a Capitol Police officer during

the incident. Three others died from natural causes and one from a drugs overdose. Trump has encouraged non-cooperation with the committee, whose investigation he has dismissed as a partisan effort to keep the events of January 6 in the national conversation. He has repeatedly called on the committee to investigate instead the 2020 presidential election, which he maintains was fraudulent. www.desertstarweekly.com

Planning the Funeral of a Loved One

By Janice Gough It takes a person’s death for some families to know the full extent of how much their loved one meant to others. Distant relatives, longtime friends and co-workers may suffer deep sadness when your family member dies. However, everyone had their unique connection, each holding a piece of the puzzle of who the person was in life and the extraordinary impact. Those varying interactions may lead you to consider holding more than one memorial. Perhaps one with immediate family, another for former colleagues, church groups and the community. These days, offering multiple services can be easier via live streaming. Many families over the years have chosen to meet the needs of different groups. Sometimes, they want a more private service, and sometimes, they want a more global one. Ideas to consider for holding different types of live streaming services: For family members and close friends With the coronavirus pandemic, even the mostdevoted bereaved may not be able to attend in person. However, that doesn’t mean you don’t have to sacrifice having a more personal service. They still want that intimate time to grieve. A smaller group helps some people grieve more outwardly and openly, so they don’t have to be as guarded. To share that experience for those needing to watch from afar, some families have tried to make it more interactive by having families record a selfie video with little messages of encouragement. Then, someone from the family can help put that into a video montage to go with www.desertstarweekly.com

the service. Loved ones also can send in written messages. This may be the service where family photos or videos take a central role in the service. It may be the service where more confidential information about the person who died is shared. Rather than share with a larger group, this service may be where close loved ones may feel freer to discuss the struggles and triumphs of a person’s life. With a smaller circle of viewers, the tone of the service may be informal and warm. For the more global group This option may allow for a more proper perspective, exploring a more comprehensive view of someone’s life. Have a family member share news of the death with that person’s co-workers, church leaders, club members and any other group where they were active. Those people can act as liaisons to others, providing details about upcoming live-stream services. As with the service for close friends and family members, you may suggest that people send in written condolences or personal memories. Ask for photos or videos, as well. Unfortunately, family members may not have access to work projects or church and club activities in which their loved ones participated. Some funeral homes ask people to write a personal note to be added to a balloon representing the people who wanted to be there. So, what would have been an empty room for the service is now full of balloons. That moves families. Family members should try to find out what made their loved one stand out at work, at church or in whatever endeavor in the community. It helps to build a service around something the viewers can make a connection with. What would most everyone have

known about that person? But that is just a starting point. It would be helpful for the family to understand how their loved one touched others in specific ways. We all play different roles in a person’s life. When they die, they take a different piece of us. Sharing those specific interactions can help the family

board “dynasties” by forcing directors to take some time off before seeking election or appointment again. Of course, such dynasties are sometimes the unintentional result of member apathy. While one can argue for or against HOA board term limits, to add or delete this requirement normally requires a membership vote to amend the bylaws. Even though applying term limits to candidates should be a simple matter, Civil Code Section 5105(e) adds one more wrinkle to disqualification notices. Candidates are not considered disqualified until they are offered internal dispute resolution, stating that HOAs “shall not disqualify a person” unless they were offered Internal Dispute Resolution under Civil Code Sections 5900-5915. So, does this mean that, in HOAs with term limits, a candidate who has served the maximum consecutive terms could still run

as a candidate simply because the HOA failed to offer IDR? The statute’s harsh language is quite clear, so always send IDR invitations along with disqualification notices. Competent counsel and up to date election rules are increasingly essential to ensure valid HOA elections. Thanks, Kelly p.s. to J.L. – Electing directors by acclamation will be allowed for all HOAs starting in 2022. Check the new Civil Code Section 5103 in January 2022 for the procedure.

and others know more about the person they have lost. Holding live streaming outside of immediate friends and family may lead to hundreds of people tuning in, bringing great joy to the person’s closest loved ones. Encourages them not to be dismayed if the viewer count is lower than expected. Sometimes people have expectations and are let down. Say that mom’s 95. If she had passed at 65, her circle of that

Into the Desert with Nowheresville is a Campy Romp

Premiere Screening of Out of Nowheresville. Photo by Pat Krause By Pamela Price The “Premier Screening Event” of a new film, Out of Nowheresville (A Nice Place To Get Away) at the Mary Pickford Theatre in Cathedral City on November 16 showcased a fascinating story featuring a backdrop of desert scenery bolstered by characters with charisma. The desert-inspired story is accentuated by an accidental discovery made by a woman driving her problematical car in the shadows of the

desert’s iconic windmills. When her unreliable car stalls amid the windmill turbines at the San Gorgonio Pass on approach to Palm Springs, she is in for an unexpected discovery, a briefcase buried in the sand. Upon opening it, she discovers, neatly sorted out, nearly a million dollars in cold cash. It is from this moment her life changes, plunging her into an unintended adventure. Enhancing the plot is the background music of the Platters, a mid-century vocal

Interviewing The Platters at screening of Out of Nowheresville. Photo by Pat Krause group, predating rock and roll with their unforgettable songs, including Only You, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and My Prayer. Their classic songs cleverly enhanced a twisty plot. Yet, the two women (portrayed by Andrea Jungert and Barbara-Ann Kay) planning to keep the treasure managed to get involved with a stream of surly characters you wouldn’t want to share a park bench with, let alone a buried treasure. The one exception is actor Tom Sizemore who portrays a well-meaning preacher in a

small desert church with wise words to share with the two women hanging on to the loot. Today’s Platters, an American vocal group performed at the screening, brought a resurgence of memorable songs to the stage. Their clever connection of the past to the present was well choreographed. The two main characters stumble through several messy murders and various shady characters you wouldn’t want to sit next to even at a desert diner (where coincidently they

worked before the stash of cash was discovered by the windmills). While the classic film “Thelma and Louise” is mentioned by these two women, their rather miserably maneuvered trip to Cabo San Lucas, where the plot thickens and ultimately backfires. Rita Lamb, Cathedral City Councilwoman, said of Out of Nowheresville, “It was a campy romp through the desert with characters raw and reactive moving from caper to catastrophe with gusto.” I agree.

Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call In Source Logic at 702-6597766 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Website www.insourcelogic.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA0700042020-1. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Notice to Tenant NOTICE TO TENANT FOR FORECLOSURES AFTER JANUARY 1, 2021 You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 702-659-7766, or visit this internet website www. insourcelogic.com, using the file number assigned to this case CA07000420-20-1 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee’s sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-939-0772 or visit this Internet Website www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2021-78039. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not be immediately reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (916) 939-0772, or visit this internet website http://www.nationwideposting.com/, using the file number assigned to this case 2021-78039 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. 2022 Special Olympics USA Games Selects Artist to Create Cauldron Design

By Desert Star Staff ORLANDO, Fla., Today, the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games, presented by Jersey Mike’s Subs, names Donald Gialanella, the USA Games Cauldron Arts Project winner. Donald will design and produce an original cauldron lit during the USA Games’ Opening Ceremony, kicking off the week-long event. Donald was chosen by a selection committee consisting of Special Olympics Athletes Katy Wilson and Mia Luoma and local representatives from the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games, Greater Orlando Sports Commission, City of Orlando, Orange County Arts and Cultural Affairs and Osceola Arts. The committee looked for a design unique to the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games and inspired by the tagline, “Shine as One.” The cauldron is an iconic symbol for the 2022 USA Games. After it is lit during the Opening Ceremony at Exploria Stadium, it will reside at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for the duration of the Games, June 5-12, 2022. After the Games, the cauldron will become a permanent statue in Orlando and create a legacy for the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games. Gialanella, with input from Special Olympics athletes, will work to ensure the cauldron represents what the USA Games means to Special Olympics athletes. This process began with a workshop where Gialanella had the opportunity to hear first-hand from athletes what Special Olympics means to them and how important

the USA Games are. The 2022 USA Games are built on the foundation of being athlete-driven, which means athletes will continue to play an essential role throughout the production process. “My passion for this project is rooted in my lifelong love for sports and Special Olympics,” said Donald Gialanella. “I have Parkinson’s disease and have struggles in my everyday life; I can empathize with Special Olympics athletes and what they overcome daily. My mission is to inspire with my art, share a message of inclusion and help others achieve their goals, something Special Olympics athletes do every day. I am honored to be part of something so universal and to bring to life a symbol of hope, unity and inclusion that will hopefully inspire many and allow these Games to shine brighter than ever.” Donald Gialanella is a metal sculptor with more than 25 years of experience in design and fabrication and has worked on more than 30 public projects. Originally from Maplewood, NJ, Gialanella now works out of his studio in St. Petersburg, Florida. Known for his larger-thanlife sculptures in public and private collections across the United States, his work is installed in more than a dozen cities including, Los Angeles, New York, and Orlando. His background includes teaching art at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, and ten years as an Emmy-winning television graphics producer in New York City. In addition, he has a long history of displaying his work in

Orlando’s public art programs. He was recently commissioned to create an 11-foot-tall metal assemblage sculpture for Fire Station 9 in Orlando, Florida.
