Tom Flores, still waiting! First quarterback in American professional football, and winner of two Super-Bowls as coach of the Raiders. By Julie Buehler For Former Raiders Coach Tom Flores, The Wait Continues. The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced it’s 26 semi-finalists Wednesday. Local man and former Raiders head coach Tom Flores is not one of them. Despite his pioneering a path for Hispanics in the NFL as
the first Hispanic quarterback, first Hispanic head coach and first Hispanic head coach to coach and win a Super Bowl, not to mention his 4 Super Bowl rings, he continues to be overlooked by voters. KMIR caught up with Coach Flores when he was announced as a nominee to
discuss why the process for his induction has taken so long and whether this year could have been his year. Of course, today, it was learned that he’ll have to wait at least another year. Here’s a look at who did make it in according to ProFootballHOF.com: Four first-year eligible
candidates – safety Brian Dawkins, defensive end Jason Taylor, running back LaDainian Tomlinson and wide receiver Hines Ward – are among the 26 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2017. Although Hall of Fame bylaws call for the selection of 25 semifinalists they also
provide that the semifinalist list includes all ties for the twenty-fifth position, as has occurred this year. One other player, guardtackle Chris Hinton, although previously eligible for the Hall, is a semifinalist for the

Tippi Hedren began her career in her twenties as a fashion model appearing on the front covers of several major magazines. She became an actress after she was discovered by
legendary director Alfred Hitchcock who noticed her in a 1961 television commercial. Hitchcock put her under personal contract in 1963 and cast her in his classic thriller, The Birds, for which she earned a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer. In her second film, Hitchcock’s Marnie, she played a challenging and difficult role of a frigid, compulsive thief opposite Sean Connery. Her professional relationship with Hitchcock ended with mutual bitterness and disappointment after Marnie completed shooting. Hedren has appeared in over eighty films and TV shows including: A Countess from Hong Kong opposite Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren. She also appeared with her daughter, Melanie Griffith in the 1990 film Pacific Heights, the Alexander Payne film, Citizen Ruth (1996), and the David O. Russell comedy, I Heart Huckabees (2004). In 2006, Hedren was a cast member of the shortlived primetime soap opera Fashion House with Bo Derek and Morgan Fairchild and continued to guest-star in television series such as The 4400 (2006) and CSI:
Crime Scene Investigation (2008). In 2012, Hedren and her daughter Griffith guest-starred together on an episode of Raising Hope. That same year, she appeared in the indie film, Free Samples and in In 2013, she made an appearance as herself in the fourth season finale of Cougar Town. Ms. Hedren’s strong commitment to animal rescue began in 1969 while she was shooting two films in Africa and was introduced to the plight of African lions. In an attempt to raise awareness for wildlife, she spent nearly eleven years bringing Roar (1981) to the screen. She started her own non-profit organization in 1983, the Roar Foundation, to support The Shambala Preserve, an 80-acre wildlife habitat which enables her to continue her work in the care and preservation of lions and tigers. Tippi Hedren’s contributions to world cinema have been honored with the Jules Verne Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Tippi Hedren Luminary Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, December 14 at noon at Agua Caliente Casino

Shea started a homeless shelter in Desert Hot Springs which they closed when Roy’s Desert Resource Center opened almost seven years ago. The problem now is money.

“The contract for managing Roy’s with Jewish Family Services terminates June 30th, they announced they were not renewing their contract, we looked for other providers there were none. They are actually out of pocket to fund the program,” said Palm Desert Councilman Sabby Jonathan. Funds going to Roy’s have decreased over the years, and not every city is contributing. “Cities have to cough up the money there were supposed to and have this facility open 24 hours, not 12, that’s horrendous and that was never the intention to begin with,” said Shea. So what is the future for the homeless shelter? “Roy’s is not closing, it is transitioning, the physical building will occupy a mental health type clinic and Roy’s will be reinvented in a location yet to be determined,” said Janathan. The county behavioral health facility will run 24 hours a day, and the committee for Roy’s is looking for a new
home for a smaller shelter. “We really don’t need that many beds if we use these other models that have come along since 2009 to rapidly rehouse people, but more importantly we’ll have the opportunity to use this as a behavioral health facility,” said Riverside County
Supervisor John Benoit. Supervisor Benoit says the building will still carry the name of his predecessor, Supervisor Roy Wilson. “This will be Roy’s, it’s not closing, it’s transitioning, there’s some overlap, but a new role,” said Benoit. A big issue was

Hilarious political Trump-Like satire at The Kirk Douglas Theatre

Samantha Sloyan and Harry Groener. Photos by Craig Schwartz By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Some plays and movies get a little too “on the nosy”, and fall short of their intended target and audience. Not so with the current World Premiere satiric political poke in the eye from the pen of Jon Robin Baitz and his newest play “Vicuna”, now gracing the stage at the Center Theatre Group’s Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City. There’s very little doubt that Baitz has been influenced by the antics and the three ring circus atmosphere of the 2016 Presidential Election campaign, led by ringleader Donald Trump. But then who hasn’t? As a result, Trump is the hands-down choice of the media, the pundits and campaign surrogates to be parodied. He’s his own worst enemy and he doesn’t even recognize it. But he’s great fodder and source material for
playwrights and screenwriters to hoist him on his own petard. “Vicuna”, unfolds in the stunning and luxurious, atelier of Anselm de Paris’s Manhattan location designed by Kevin Depinet, one of the outstanding scenic designers working today. When the audience enters the theatre the set screams luxury and high prices. His creative set design for the 2015 Old Globe production of “Sense and Sensibility” is still fresh in my memory. Baitz’s wickedly hilarious satire is deftly directed by Robert Egan, formerly the Producing Artistic Director of the Mark Taper Forum. Egan is fortunate to have casting director Meg Fister on his creative team for this production. She has assembled a stellar cast of solid actors who know how to perform in a comedy/ satire production when they
find themselves in one. The story revolves around Presidential Candidate Kurt Seaman, an ego-centric, multi-millionaire real estate tycoon and businessman played by Harry Groener, who wants a suit from the hands of master tailor Anselm Kassar for the final presidential debate in two weeks. And he’s willing to pay extra to have it delivered in time. Groener delivers Baitz’s outlandish lines with impeccable timing and silky smugness. In short, he’s fabulous in a part he was born to play. Brian George as Anselm Kassar the proprietor, is a man who knows how to make extremely expensive suits - Kassar charges Seamam $ 110 thousand dollars for a vicuna material creation-while his clients enjoy the art of the deal in the haggling over the cost, without either going beyond the point of losing the sale. It’s a verbal tug of war between Kassar, his young progressive-thinking intern Amir passionately played by Raimiz Monset, who believes Seaman’s millions should
be spent elsewhere where it could do some good, and not be wasted on the body of a megalomaniac. The exchanges between Seaman, Kassar, and Amir, plus Srilanka (yes, that’s her character’s name), Seaman’s daughter played by Samantha Sloyan are right out of the current Trump campaign playbook. It’s impossible to miss the obvious parallels. There is another character called Kitty Finch-Gibbon wonderfully played by glamourous veteran actor Linda Gehringer. Kitty is the ‘agent’ representing a mysterious cabal who are intent on getting Seaman to withdraw as a candidate by dangling a two billion dollar carrot as the inducement. Oh, how candidate Seaman loves to be a player in the art of the deal. “Vicuna” is comedy rich in innuendo and roman a clef portrayals. I’ve seen several of Jon Robin Baitz’s plays in the past, but this one is a little different from his usually serious efforts as a dramatist. This play combines sharply written satire and
terrific performances from a sold cast; all under the watchful and experience eye of director Robert Egan. The creative team led by director Egan includes the aforementioned Scenic Designer Kevin Depinet, Costume Designer Laura Bauer and that ‘$110 Thousand dollar suit’ that fits Mr. Groener like a fine silk glove. Lighting Designer Tom Ontiveros made the entire set sparkle, displaying the richness and warmth of the wood trimming and the various suit displays. And Original Music and Sound Design by Karl Fredrik Lundeberg complete the technical credits. “Vicuna” is a biting commentary on America’s Presidential Election process in democracy every four years. The 2016 Election results will already be known by the time you read this review. But you have to see the play yourself in order to determine if the 2016 Election was indeed ‘rigged’. “Vicuna” performs at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, CA through November 20, 2016.

E N T E RTA I N M E N T ‘Doctor Strange’ -- a New MARVEL-ous Action Hero BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
Marvel Comics has unleashed countless superheros into our universe, amazing men with superhuman powers whose primary purpose is to save us all from dark evil forces. For starters, there’s Tony Stark, better known as Iron Man, the incredible Green Hulk, Thor— and now Doctor Strange. The greatest sorcerer in the world, Dr. Strange has joined the ‘Marvel-ous’ family of amazing superheros. In the Marvel film playing citywide, he is performed by Benedict

Cumberbatch, perhaps better known to us as PBSTV’s Sherlock Holmes. We first meet Doctor Strange outside the operating room. He’s an excellent surgeon, and he knows it. In fact, he is so self-confident and cocky that he’s respected, but not well liked, by his colleagues. Perhaps the one exception is Dr. Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams). They are romantically linked, but even she finds it hard to get close to him on a personal level. He has a successful
career, a lovely home, an assortment of watches, drawers full, in fact, but it is only a matter of time before things change dramatically in his orderly, successful life. His downfall takes place as he is speeding to a highpowered professional function. To ease the boredom of the drive, he starts to text, which is a stupid thing to do no matter how brilliant you think you are. Suddenly, he is involved in a horrendous crash that sends him and his vehicle careening over a cliff and into the water

below. As a result of the crash, he loses the full use of his hands. To his horror, he is told that full recovery will be out of reach forever. The diagnosis is totally devastating. However, he refuses to accept the fact that he will never again be able to perform delicate operations. Even though everything seems hopeless, Strange refuses to accept his fate. At this point, he learns that a man named Pangborn (Benjamin Bratt) whose spinal cord had been severed several years earlier has made a complete recovery. How could this be possible? In fact, Pangborn had come to Strange at the time, but was turned down by the brilliant surgeon because there was nothing that could be physically done to rehabilitate him. Hoping to discover a miracle cure, Strange sets out to find Pangborn. Perhaps there still was a way for him to regain the use of his damaged hands, a way to work as a gifted surgeon once again. Eventually Strange tracks down Pangborn, who tells him his mysterious secret. When no one in America could help him, Pangborn traveled to Kathmandu where he learned how to channel the inner powers of his mind under the tutelage of an ancient sorcerer. Strange immediately flies to Nepal to study with the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). She may be his only hope since nothing else has helped him regain the full use of his once skillful hands. Upon his arrival in Kathmandu, he is introduced to the ageless sorcerer by another skilled member of her staff, a sorcerer named Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Strange shows promise, but when she starts to show him how to channel his mind during their first encounter, he repels her with his arrogant attitude. It seems that Strange has a strange effect on many people, including the Ancient One. She casts him out, but he refuses to leave. He continually bangs on the door to her sanctuary until he is totally exhausted. Finally, his persistence wins her over, and he is given a second chance to learn the age-old secrets that she, and her books contain Strange is tireless in his studies and ultimately learns how to step through fiery openings that are portals through time and space. The CGI images are spectacular and will be especially appealing to the comic book crowd that can’t get enough of Stan Lee’s characters and their amazing adventures. Special
effects include buildings that fold up and self destructs, burning portals that’re open up, allowing Strange and other sorcerers to leap effortlessly through time and space and eventually there is the colorful, cosmic confrontation with the dark evil force that is determined to take over the entire universe even if it means destroying our planet. Will Strange be victorious in his efforts to save the world? And will he become a master sorcerer rather than return to his chosen career as a skilled surgeon? When the endless end credits roll, and from the look of them, millions of people were involved in making this movie, don’t rush out of the theater. If you do you will miss the second ending involving Mordo. And after that Strange and Thor appears in yet another scene that lets us know that there will be a sequel involving Doctor Strange, the greatest sorcerer in the universe... “Dr. Strange is rated PG-13 for martial arts fighting that is too intense for young viewers.

The winners were announced tonight as part of a one-hour special on MLB Network hosted by Greg Amsinger and Eric Byrnes. In addition to Betts, who was named the top defensive player in baseball, the following Major Leaguers were honored as the top defensive players at their respective positions: Zack Greinke (pitcher, Arizona Diamondbacks), Buster Posey (catcher, San Francisco Giants), Anthony Rizzo (first baseman, Chicago Cubs), Dustin Pedroia (second baseman, Boston Red Sox), Nolan Arenado (third baseman, Colorado Rockies), Brandon Crawford (shortstop, San Francisco Giants), Brett Gardner (left fielder, New York Yankees), Kevin Kiermaier (center fielder, Tampa Bay Rays) and Betts (right fielder, Boston Red Sox). Betts, a first-time All-Star in 2016 and a first-time recipient of the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year award, led MLB with 32 defensive runs saved. He is the youngest player ever (24) to win a Defensive Player of the Year Award. The Giants, who reached
the Postseason as a National League (NL) Wild Card team this year, set an NL record in 2016 for the longest errorless streak in league history, spanning more than 17 games. The Giants (Posey and Crawford) were one of two Clubs with multiple 2016 award winners (Red Sox). Of the nine players honored, five (Greinke, Rizzo, Kiermaier, Gardner and Betts) are first-time winners, with five hailing from the NL and four from the American League. Pedroia, the overall Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, earned his third award this year while Posey, Crawford and Arenado won for the second time in their careers. SAN DIEGO, - In recognition of Veterans Day and in gratitude of the sacrifice of the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, the NewSchool of Architecture & Design (NewSchool) today honored its employee and student veterans, and thanked them for their service. In early 2016, Accrediting Council for Military & Veterans Education and Training (ACMVET) named NewSchool the “First Regionally Accredited School in the State of California” to be certified and recognized as “Military & Veteran Supportive Campus” by ACMVET. The accrediting/ certifying commissioners certified NewSchool based on its solid academic curricula, military and veteran educational benefits, services, support, and community networking and
outreach provided by its San Diego, California campus. The certification identifies academic institutions that have gone above and beyond to provide not only a quality education but additional services and support to the military and veteran communities. Last year, NewSchool debuted a new Veterans’ Resource Center, which gives students receiving military benefits access to information about services available in our local community, and also enables them to meet and interact with one another in a supportive space on campus. NewSchool continues to participate in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program and is proud to be designated as a Military-Friendly School and receive the Military & Veteran Supportive Campus recognition from ACMVET.
