Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Annual Dancing With Our Stars was held at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Friday Nov. 14th. Four women and four men danced with professional dancers to benefit 100 Women Charity. 100 women were formed to help women and children affected by HIV or AIDS by providing healthcare and so much more. The dancers are all locals very prominent citizens and spent several weeks with a trained dancer to get the dances to where they looked like professionals on the stage. The costumes they wore were consistent with the dances they had to perform like a waltz, salsa, samba and others. The fans cheered loudly for their favorite dancers and a few times the judges were given a Boo if the comments were not favorable. Randy Roberts and Andrew Krasny were the emcees for the evening, and the judge’s panel consisted of our own local celebrity Sal Mistretta and Academy Award and Golden Globe winners Rita Moreno and George Chakiris best known for their roles in the movie “West-Side Story”. The dancers were Mary Silverman from Desert Magazine, Tom Kirk from CVAG, Mindy Reed-ZIN American Bistro, Albert Gonzalez - Mgr Lulu California Bistro, Nina Beck- M3B TMKS/IP Inc. Nino Eilets- The Standard Magazine, Joseph Pradetto Board Assistant to Riverside Cty Supervisor John Benoit and the WINNER, Natalie Brunell from KESQ. VINCE GILL AND THE TIME JUMPERS

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Vince Gill and the Time Jumpers graced the stage at the McCallum Theatre on Monday Nov. 10th. Vince Gill said he loves to come to the Valley to perform. He makes an appearance here in the Valley often. He said that one of his favorite memories here was playing golf at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament a few years ago. He came on Stage in just an informal black t-shirt and jeans and proceeded to play and sing. He said he was going to play a few of his hit songs so the audience wouldn’t have to request them. He told of his meeting with his wife Amy Grant and how he said he loved her eyes and her beauty. He wrote a song for her before they were married. He said she had thought the song was so beautiful that it must have been written for some lucky lady. Years later he told her her it was written for her. Vince Gill started the evening performances by doing the first part of the evening before the intermission. The Time Jumpers and Vince came on after intermission and played the rest of the performances. The Time Jumpers are all masters of their instruments and have played with some of the top country music artists. They also write and perform their own songs.

AMFM FEST 2014

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Second annual AMFM Fest was held in Cathedral City at the Mary Pickford complex and theatre. AMFM stands for Art, Music, Film and MORE. There were independent films and movie premieres shown at the theatre. Special celebrity guests, film makers and directors walked a Red Carpet each of the 3 nights of the festival. There was an Art Display by well-known artists, panel discussions and evenings of entertainment by local bands, after parties and awards ceremonies. A lot to do in the three days of the festival. It is only in its second year, and this year was bigger and better than the last. Celebrities Ed Asner made his second appearance while Robert Loggia, and some of the directors and other actors came for the first time but probably not the last as the Festival continues to grow. The Boys and Girls Club of Cathedral City held an awards ceremony and Student Film Submissions on Friday. There was also a meet and greet with the cast of the new film, An Evergreen Christmas. There were Food Fair Trucks available for a delicious variety of foods, a Beer Garden and lots of music each night on the plaza for dancing the night away. The event brought a lot of people in from LA and even more this year from local cities as people find out what a special event this is in Cathedral City.

Charitable Giving-Tips in Donating By Janice Gough Now that the holidays are in full swing, many have begun to focus on charitable gifts they’d like to make before the end of the year. While a charitable income tax deduction may

increase the amount, a client ultimately gives to charity, I find that regardless of the tax incentive, the philanthropic spirit is usually the driving force. Here are some helpful tips to consider. 1. AVOID GIVING CASH: All charitable donations must be substantiated (such as with a receipt, canceled check, or written acknowledgement received from the charity) in order for the deduction to be taken. Many clients do not realize that this requirement also pertains to cash donations. In order to deduct gifts of $250 or more, you must have a receipt from the charity. Donations made by check can be deducted if postmarked by Dec. 31 — although for donations in excess of a few hundred dollars, best practices would dictate that the charity receives and cashes the check prior to the end of the year. Because online donations made by credit card get processed instantly, clients may want to consider making year-end donations in this manner. 2. CONSIDER THE D O N AT I O N S O U R C E : Remember that not all donations need to come from the checkbook. A client called me recently to discuss her elderly father’s estate plan. The father had a specific donation he wished to make, and he also

has a large IRA. I suggested that they consider the IRA charitable rollover, which counts toward a n y re q u i re d m i n i m u m distribution amount and will also be excluded from taxable income. Until the end of this year, individuals over 70½ can “roll over” (i.e., distribute) up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charities -- a label that includes most public charities, although not all of them. This tax benefit will expire at the end of the year, unless Congress acts. Another option for clients either under age 70½ or without substantial IRA, fund is to give appreciated securities traded on a public market -- which, as always, will qualify for a tax deduction at their full fair market value. The tax benefit will expire at the end of the year, unless Congress acts. 3. UTILIZE DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS: Because donoradvised funds are themselves public charities, they allow individuals to set aside amounts for charities and obtain a charitable deduction, while they delay choosing a specific charity or purpose to benefit. Donor-advised funds can also be used in place of a family foundation to help create family legacies. A client of mine wished to set aside an amount for

charity that was substantial — but not quite substantial enough to justify creating her own foundation. I suggested that she uses a donor-advised fund. Now, every year at the holidays, she gets together with her nieces and nephews and gives each specific amount to decide where to donate. Not only does this allow her to teach her nieces and nephews about the joys of charitable giving, but she has also created a family holiday tradition; the only cost is the annual administrative fee charged by the donor-advised fund. 4. THINK LOCALLY: There are literally hundreds of community foundations across the United States. Community foundations focus on local needs, helping donors identify where the needs are the greatest and how to make the most impact, even with relatively small contributions. If you wish to help your community, don’t forget your local community foundation. The Council on Foundations provides information on community foundations and has a handy guide to help locate the ones in your area. Locally, we have established The Art Foundation of Desert Hot Springs, a 501c3, and we hope you will consider a gift as we need funds to establish operations. One of our primary

goals is to build an outdoor amphitheater in Desert Hot Springs, not only for music and theater, but also to train our talented children and have an avenue to bring in funds. Find us on Facebook and www. gofundme.com/AFDHS. 5. SCRUTINIZE RECIPIENTS: This shouldn’t need repeating, but with new charitable organizations popping up every day, it bears another reminder. CharityNavigator.org, which has excellent tips for donors, can also help advisors and client’s check out charitable organizations to ensure that donations are being used as promised. It’s wise to avoid charities that use paid fundraisers, who tend to receive a relatively large percentage of the funds they raise. Charity Navigator also suggests that charities should spend no more than 25% of expenses on fundraising and administrative overhead.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL 2014 was the first year of the relocated and reorganized Davis Stirling Act, but the legislators did not give the Act any rest. At least 32 bills proposed in the 2013-2014 session to make various modifications in laws affecting common interest developments, 13 of which were passed and signed by the Governor this year. To review or track legislation, use www.leginfo. legislature.ca.gov . There are many helpful features, including a “today’s law as amended” tab showing how current law would be changed by the bill. Three water conservation bills were approved: AB 2100, SB 992 and AB 2104. AB

2100 continues the current emergency protection of members not watering their yards, and removes the exemption on this protection in HOAs using recycled water. AB 2104 continues protecting water-saving landscapes, and adds a protection of homeowners removing existing turf in favor of lower water usage plants. SB 992 bans associations from requiring power washing of buildings, vehicles or concrete. AB 2100 and SB 992 were urgency measures, meaning those laws are already in effect. Most of these laws will be in effect only during declared drought emergencies (such as now). AB 2561 protects the right of homeowners to plant edible crop plants in their private yards. AB 2188 amends Civil Code 714, a statute protecting applications for solar energy installations. Under this new law, associations have narrower discretion in placing conditions on solar systems, and must now respond to such applications faster- within 45 days- or they are deemed approved. AB 968 amends Civil C o d e 4 7 7 5 , re g a rd i n g allocation of maintenance and repair responsibility. [See HOA Homefront #122]. The

amendment fills a “hole” in the statute, and confirms what most HOA attorneys have said for years – unless the governing documents say otherwise, the HOA repairs/replaces exclusive use area, and the homeowner maintains it. This law takes effect in 2017. SB 1243 extends the “Certified Common Interest Development Manager” program, established by Business and Professions Code Sections 11500-11506, up to the end of 2018. [Is your manager Certified? Your manager should be able to call themselves “Certified”] AB 2430 amends Civil 4530 and requires that, when there are charges for providing a prospective buyer HOA disclosure documents, the cost is billed to the seller (as opposed to the current practice, which is to bill the buyer). The charges must be itemized and cannot be “bundled” with other charges. If a document is provided electronically, there can be no charge. AB 1738 amends the “Internal Dispute Resolution” process of Civil 5910, and confirms that a participant may bring an attorney to IDR meetings. [This is a bad idea for both sides, since the whole

point of IDR is to keep attorneys out of the process and keep the cost down. Just because you CAN bring an attorney doesn’t mean you should. Both sides should keep attorneys out of IDR]. AB 2755 amends Corporations Code 5047 and excludes non-voting participants in board meetings from the definition of “director”. Some associations have “advisors” or “ex officio” participants, and they will now clearly not be considered directors. Developers may be interested in AB 2222 and AB 569, although those new laws will not affect boards or managers. AB 2222 involves “density bonuses” for builders of new projects, and AB 569 regards stock cooperatives, which are less common.

Michael Hyatt’s Five Steps To Discipline

By Art Kunkin Mr Life Extension While surfing the Internet this week I read some great information about how to accomplish anything written by entrepreneur Michael Wyatt. I believe this information will be useful to all readers. Here is what Wyatt suggests. 1: Determine your goal. The key is in knowing what you really want. If you are going to succeed, you must be specific. You must be able to see it. Write down this goal and – while you are at it – add a “by when” date. Example: I will lose 20 pounds of body fat by July 31, 2015. 2: List your reasons. This is often the missing piece in both goal setting and discipline. You have to ask yourself, Why is this goal important? What is at stake in my achieving it? List both the positive and negative. Example: I want more energy. Example: I want to lose my cholesterol. 3: Identify likely obstacles. As soon as you start swimming against the current, you will start feeling resistance. It’s as if the

universe is conspiring to keep you from succeeding. That’s why you have to anticipate these obstacles and build strategies to overcome them. Obstacle example: Inability to work out while traveling on vacation. Strategy: make sure that the hotel has a workout room before you register. Also, pack your workout clothes and shoes before leaving the house. Obstacle example: Eating more calories than you intend. Strategy: Educate yourself about the calorie count of various foods. 4: Developing new behaviors: This is where you should focus. What are the positive brand new behaviors you want to develop to replace the old, negative behaviors. Example: Drink two and a half liters of water each day to stay hydrated. 5: Read your goals daily. Everyday review your reasons why you want to accomplish your goals. Anticipate obstacles every day and work on your new behavior. If you get off track don’t

beat yourself up. Sometimes you will go three steps forward and two steps back. Just shake off your undesired behavior and re-focus on your goal. Discipline is not really about will-power so much as it is focusing on what you really want. If you get clear on that, accomplishing your goals suddenly becomes much easier. Michael Hyatt has also written a new book very worthy of note: It is titled “Platform: Get Noticed In A Noisy World. A Step-By-Step Guide For Anyone With Something To Say Or Sell.” This book is THE handbook to the social media cultural revolutions of our time. It is a must-read for anyone hoping to bring great awareness to their product, mission or service. From the Introduction: “Very simply, a platform is the thing you have to stand on to get heard. It’s your stage. But unlike a stage in the theater, today’s platform is not built of wood or concrete or perched on a grassy hill. Today’s platform is built of people. Contacts. Connections.

Followers. The book goes on to explain that your platform might include a website; a blog, Twitter and Facebook account, an online video show or a podcast. It might also include personal appearances as a public speaker, musician or entertainer. It might include traditional media such as a newspaper column, magazine articles or radio show. “As in time’s past, success today is not so much about what you know; it’s about who you know. And the who is your platform. You may already have – or believe you have – a significant what. But, you have to make yourself heard among the noise of thousands of other voices; you also have to be able to present your brilliant, significant what to someone.” The author, Michael Hyatt, suggests that you should listen to him because his blog, MichaelHyatt.com, has more than four hundred thousand monthly visitors. In addition, greater than fifty thousand people subscribe to his daily

posts; he has one hundred thousand twitter followers and fifteen thousand Facebook fans. All this has happened in the last eight years. If you want to build a platform for your own endeavor, it might be very useful to learn how he has built his. Building a platform is no longer about investing thousands of dollars in consultants or understanding complex and confusing technologies. For the first time in history, non-celebrities can get noticed and win big in an increasingly noisy world. Art Kunkin is the 86 year young journalist who published and edited the alternative weekly newspaper The Los Angeles Free Press starting in 1964, later becoming president of the Philosophical Research Society. He currently is a member of the Advisory Board of The Institute of Mentalphysics, also known as the Joshua Tree Retreat Center. Copyright 2014 by Art Kunkin, All Rights Reserved.

Mayor And People’s Republic of China

By Desert Star Staff Desert Hot Springs, California – Desert Hot Springs Mayor Adam Sanchez, Sr., attended the “Disaster Survival Workshop” on Saturday, October 25 in Desert Hot Springs, along with two disaster readiness professionals from the People’s Republic of China. “This is my third time attending this very informational class. Carol had told me that every class is about five percent different from prior classes due to questions asked and what she relays spontaneously during class,” said Sanchez. “She was right—I learned new things at this class too,” he added. Mr. Wang, having excellent English, and Mr. Li both stated they “learned a lot” at this class. Mr. Wang is an International Development Consultant with the Beijing Red Cross Foundation, and Mr. Li is Director of a search and rescue organization in the People’s Republic of China. Both drove to the Coachella Valley from San Gabriel Valley for the four hour class. “It was all new to me. Carol

Camelot teaches how to handle fatalities such as from an earthquake, based on a two hour class she attended in 1997 by the Riverside County Coroner for first responders. She adapted the wrap the body technique and created a hands-on exercise for her students using large dolls. She emphasized that wrapping a body for retrieval by police/sheriff or the coroner’s office should not be done on bodies suspected of being contaminated with Ebola or other contagious diseases. November 19, 2014

Among the many topics presented in the class are earthquake preparedness and survival; Ebola and the immune system; nuclear, biological, chemical and electromagnetic pulse attacks; emotional and physical stress; water needs, storage and purification; trash and sanitation; food and water, and evacuation. Disaster Survival Training was founded in 1999 in Palm Desert, and offers presentations, consulting services, and classes. Nearly 6,000 residents have heard presentations on various topics by Camelot since 1997. Camelot served as chairperson from 1997-1998 for Neighborhood Emergency Service Teams (NEST), a city-wide citizen organization

affiliated with the Cathedral City Fire Department and has been in the disaster readiness field for over two decades. Camelot is also a member of American Rescue Team International and National Society of Newspaper Columnists. The next upcoming class date is Wednesday, December 10, 1:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. Preregistration is required and attendance is $99 per person. Each student receives a 55page “You Can Survive” booklet developed by Camelot and a Certificate of Training. Family and corporate discounts are available. It’s a performance of pop hits and holiday favorites backed by a 12-piece band and a spectacular choir. Born in South Carolina, PEABO BRYSON began singing at age 14. Two years later, in 1968, he left home to tour, gaining experience that would prepare him for a solid career. In 1976, he released his debut album Peabo. He followed with such albums as the Gold selling Reaching for the Sky, Crosswinds and Born to Love which included the smash single “Tonight I Celebrate My Love.” His 1989 album All My Love earned Peabo his first R&B #1 single with “Show & Tell.” Peabo released Live in Concert: Ladies’ Request (2005) and The Very Best of Peabo Bryson (2006), a compilation of his biggest hits. by an Angel,” a recurring role as the choir director in “Ally McBeal,” and three PBS specials. It’s been a decade since the FOX television show “American Idol” crowned RUBEN STUDDARD its 2003 winner. In the years since, the Velvet Teddy Bear (as Gladys Knight nicknamed him for his smoothly soothing vocal style) has produced a string of Gold and Platinum albums. He’s toured as Fats Waller in a national tour of Ain’t Misbehavin’, appeared on television shows and played a pastor in the 2010 film Lifted. Along the way, he’s picked up Grammy and American Music Award nominations and turned out urban radio hits like “Sorry 2004,” “Superstar,” “Make Ya Feel Beautiful,” and “Change Me.” He scored a #1 Gospel hit with “I Need an Angel.” Ruben’s latest album, Letters From Birmingham, is an alluring concept album about the ups and downs of modern romance and his most personal set of music yet. Through the generosity of Milton and Areta McKenzie, the McCallum Theatre presents “Colors of Christmas,” starring Peabo Bryson, with Taylor Dayne, Jennifer Holliday and Ruben Studdard, on Sunday, December 14, at 7:00pm.

A Revjuvenating Recovery in Desert Hot Springs By Pamela Price The Ranch Recovery Centers, Inc ., residential alcohol and drug program service based in Desert Hot Springs is more of a community offering time tested, therapeutic solutions reaching out to men and women who have been negatively impacted by drugs and alcohol. Their residents, seeking a new path in life, will find rehabilitation and recovery can make that happen. In short, ‘The Ranch’ with separate facilities for men and women provides assistance, individual treatment, alcohol and drug education education and recreational activities with wisdom, and encouragement imparted at every level. Currently, there are accommodations for men’s services at The Ranch, which covers 25 acres and accommodations for 35 women at Hacienda Valdez. The Ranch is self-sufficient staffed by Chef Beau Potter; he has been cooking up his specialties, such as chili for over

19 years. “Our residents pitch in to make meals, living here is hands on. Our kitchen turns out cuisine that is fresh and healthy” Potter said. Hacienda Valdez is located what used to be a mineral spa; the original pool is still in operation. This residential facility houses women who are in various stages of recovery. The casual ambiance resembles a mid century spa resort, with gardens and opens space creating a roomy healing environment. On first glimpse Hacienda, Valdez resembles the many small therapeutic spas that have made Desert Hot Springs a world recognized health spa destination. Rick Mesa, President and CEO said the complex was built in the 1950s as a small Mineral Springs spa; the pool remains for women in treatment here; a genuine healing environment for the recovery process. “The ambiance creates a feeling of home and security,” said Robin Montgomery,

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Humana Challenge and Desert Classic Charities gave a whopping $800,000 to Coachella Valley Charities. The Tournament has raised money each year for charities since it started in 1960. Thirty nine charities benefited from the money raised at last year’s tournament. The most money distributed so far with the largest donation to Eisenhower Medical Center that received over $200,000. Michael Landis, President of Eisenhower Medical Center Foundation spoke about how the tournament has been such a big influence in our Valley. He said just , imagine if there had been no tournament to give money to all these charities and what they would have done without the money and support all these years. He wondered if they could have survived, and it was thanks to the tournament that has continued its efforts on behalf of all the beneficiaries

of the monies raised. It was an unthinkable thought that could have impacted thousands of people all these years. Media was present at a luncheon to announce the donations. Three top TV anchors were at hand to announce each recipient. Kris Long- CBS Local 2 announced the $165,000 went to charities providing food and shelter and Gino LaMont-KMIR 6 announced the $265,000 went to charities that benefited children. John White KESQ 3 announced the $145.000 that went to charities that provide rehab, social and support services to those in need.

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic “Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche”, written by Evan Linder and Andrew Hobgood, and cleverly directed by Michael Shaw is a difficult property to label. Is it a drama? Definitely Not! Is it a comedy? Definitely Yes! And, it’s also a satire with elements of farce thrown into the mix for good measure, and what an intriguing title for a play written by two men for five women. The story of five selfproclaimed lesbians, who are

attending the Annual Quiche Breakfast meeting of the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein, is set in 1956. It’s a period in America’s past that only those old enough to remember the Russia vs. America cold war and the A-bomb scare and paranoia that ruled the hearts and minds of the American public can appreciate. Sounds pretty frightening doesn’t it? Well, in the hands of the ensemble cast led by a radiant Yo Younger, all that underlying fear is turned into a squealing comedy/farce about

Quiche and “the egg”. It’s really not that important to understand what the characters are saying, it’s more rewarding to see and enjoy what the actors are doing on-stage (although it would be nice if the squealing could come down a notch). There is a wink to the audience here, as well as direct dialogue to the audience during the show along with double-takes, and includes an over-the-top moment by Phylicia Mason during one of the scenes. 2013 Tony Winner ‘Kinky Boots’

The upbeat 2013 Tony Award-winning Best Musical “Kinky Boots” celebrates its LA premiere at the Hollywood Pantages for three weeks only, now through Nov. 30. The show took home six Tonys, winning Best Musical, Best Score (Cyndi Lauper), Best Choreography (Jerry Mitchell), Best Orchestrations and Best Sound Design. It also received the Grammy for Best Musical Album and many other accolades. Fourtime Tony winner Harvey Fierstein wrote the Book for the show, based on the British film of the same name, and although the title may sound ‘kinky,’ the vibrant musical has a tender heart. The story revolves around Charlie Price (Steven Booth) who has reluctantly inherited his father’s shoe factory, which is about to go bankrupt. Charlie doesn’t really want to carry on in the family’s business, but he’s also reluctant to let the factory close since the workers have been like family to him. Not knowing just what to do, he finds himself inspired by a flamboyant drag queen entertainer named Lola (Kyle Taylor Parker) who, it turns out, is in desperate need of sturdy stilettos that won’t collapse under

his weight. They meet by chance one night when Charlie tries to protect Lola from a group of rowdy guys outside the theater where Lola performs... Charlie gets knocked down in his attempt to be a hero, but Lola puts up a truly professional fist fight. Later, when Lola finds out what Charlie does, she asks if can make her a pair of fancy boots—,and they must be RED. Icon Sheila E. A Rainfall in Wilderness By Carolyn W. Gaines Palm Springs, CA.- Sheila E. a Grammy-Nominated singer drummer percussionist showed up for her desert fans, and lost her voice due to hard work. Pat Prescott and Fans made one thing clear. Sheila E. can still beat a set of drums and rained a stormy, great performance. Thursday, evening the Instrumentalist picked up those drumsticks and drumfire her fans into magnetic none-stopped, deep booming sounds. The Rhythmist Concert began at 8:00 PM at the Morongo Casino Resort where her fans awaited early as 3:00 PM. in the afternoon. The Fans were all excited and fired up after her completed Esperanto. An exceptional review

about the outstanding, pretty, timpanist-vocalist Sheila E. Pat Prescott radio personality from 94.7 the Wave said,” Sheila had no voice to sing and talk. She did the Sheila E. thing. She gave 150 percent, which meant she should have not been singing her knew album called, ‘’Icon” songs, which were a Fantasy. Sheila has a new book coming out called,’’The Beat Of My Own Drums.” She gave love much love. She’s a Lovely Lady.’’ The Morongo’s Concert was sponsored by the Hot, Jazz, Radio Station the 94.7 the Wave as Peabo Bryson would sing the commercial. The Superstar, Legend, Sheila E’s cousin Cheryl said, “She always out does herself, and She shares herself with her

audience. She is the Queen of participation.’’ I have to admit the reality of Sheila E’s, Mom and Dad, raised a very nice daughter for the ‘World’ of Entertainment. She excited her fans very well after her Vibe Room Recital with an unforgettable a night! One of her fans commented after the show said,” It was as, if Miss. Newly Minted Neil Simon Classic “The Odd Couple”

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic “The Odd Couple” is one of Neil Simon’s most successful plays, and believe me he’s had a slew of them. He holds the record as Broadway’s most successful playwright with over 30 smash Broadway hits; with three running simultaneously, in a non-pareil career. The genius that is Simon is his ability to resonate with his audience. One doesn’t laugh at his characters. One laughs with them and the laughs are non-stop. It should come as no surprise then that the Palm Desert Stage Company (PDSC) is presenting a first-rate production of Simon at his best; lovingly directed by Jeanette Knight. Producer and founder of PDSC Colleen Kelley, who plays one of the Pigeon sisters

in the production, gathered a cast of some of the Valley’s most talented and sharpest comedians and actors who bring fresh portrayals to Simon’s iconic characters of Oscar Madison and Felix Unger played by Lou Galvan and Matthew Shaker, respectively. Galvan and Shaker are well known actors here in the Valley, and their on-stage chemistry plays like gangbusters under Knight’s creative direction. Galvan’s Oscar is a dynamo of energy with impeccable comedy timing. It’s always a pleasure watching him perform. He has a serious side but he excels in comedy roles; thank goodness. Left to right: Ron Young, Alan Berry, Peter Mins, Lou Galvan Shaker as the fussy, aboutto-be-divorced-from-his-wife, Felix, is a revelation. Shaker in “Wait Until Dark”, at the Palm Claude in “Hair” (the man’s a has run the acting gamut with Canyon Theatre years ago, to professional musician as well), such diverse roles as the villain Cornelius in “Hello Dolly” to to now as Felix in the PDSC production gem “The Odd Couple”. Shaker’s Felix brings another comedy dimension to the character created by Neil Simon. He and Galvan are the perfect “Odd Couple” It’s one of Shaker’s finest performances. His frustration with Galvan’s slob Oscar portrayal is priceless to watch. Bolstering the entertaining production is the solid hilarious ensemble group of card-playing cronies of Oscar: Ron Young as Murray, Charles Williams Gaines as Vinnie, Peter Mins as Roy, and Alan Berry as Speed (it’s good seeing Berry back on the boards after a five year hiatus). Adding spice to Left to to right Matthew Shaker, Debbie Apple, Colleen Kelley the comedy proceedings are the aforementioned Colleen

Kelley as Gwendolyn Pigeon, and Debbie Apple as Cecily Pigeon, the English sisters who live in the upstairs apartment in Oscars building. It was gratifying to see a sold-out house on opening night at the Indio Performing Arts Center (IPAC). The mostly middle-age patrons of a “certain age” audience, relished the onstage shenanigans of the actors remembering, no doubt, the first time seeing “The Odd Couple” back in the middle 1960’s. This production is like a good vintage wine that only gets better with age in the caring hands of a terrific ensemble cast. “The Odd Couple performs at IPAC through November 23rd, 2014. Call the Palm Desert Stage Company Box Office at 760-636-9682 for reservations and ticket information.

S P O RT S La Quinta has Close Call in Playoff Opener BY DANIEL MARINELLI

LA QUINTA – In the opening round of the CIF-SS Eastern Division football playoffs, it should not be too difficult for any top team to advance to the second round. Prior to the La Quinta Blackhawks’ (first place in DVL) opener last Friday, however, head coach Dan Armstrong knew that the Apple Valley Sun Devils were a much better team than their mediocre 3-7 record suggested. Armstrong touted the Sun Devils for their physicality and their ability to move the ball. Additionally, it was still a game-time decision whether Blackhawks starting quarterback Michael Avina would even play; a huge loss if the ankle sprain he suffered two weeks ago kept him of the field.

Fortunately for the DVL’s one seed, Avina did suit up, but from the opening drive of the game, Coach Armstrong’s other concerns appeared valid. The Blackhawks defensive line was slacking and Sun Devils running back Tristian McNatt ran 80 yards on four plays and scored. La Quinta answered immediately, with a six-yard touchdown pass from Avina to Justin Anderson that calmed the nerves of the home-team Blackhawks fans. Despite the brief tie, Apple Valley scored on the very next drive, and once again, La Quinta trailed 14-7. If the touchdown meant anything, it was an early sign that the Sun Devils were not going away, and they were not going to let the Blackhawks walk

all over them. Looking like the inferior team, La Quinta scored once more to tie the game by halftime. Something may have been said to the Blackhawks in the locker room. Or, it might have been Chris Toribio’s clutch, 4th and 1, 57-yard touchdown run on the first possession of the third quarter that ignited the team, but La Quinta played with a higher sense of urgency in the final two quarters. Most of the game was back and fourth – best exemplified in the waning minutes of the third quarter, when the game was locked at 21. Apple Valley quarterback Nick Schulze threw an untimely interception to Anderson and the Blackhawks took back the momentum that

always proves crucial in late, tie games. Fitting the game’s chain of events, on the very next play, Toribio uncharacteristically fumbled for the second time in the game, returning the ball, and momentum to Apple Valley. The Devils took advantage, and on a one-yard Schulze touchdown run to open the fourth quarter, the Blackhawks were trailing again. Down 28-21, La Quinta needed to score a lot and score fast – which is exactly what happened. Avina’s offense found the end zone four times in the final 12 minutes. Three rushing touchdowns by Toribio (2, 17 and 37 yards) and even an ill-advised, 14-yard run from Avina to put La Quinta up by two touchdowns, 42-28, with just 4:15 left in the game. The game appeared all but over, until Schulze ran in his second touchdown of the game with just a hair under three minutes left. After failing to get the two-point conversion, La Quinta was only up eight points, 42-34, and the game very much alive still. W ith such little time remaining, the Sun Devils needed to recover an onside kick to have any hope of tying the game, but they did not. The Blackhawks recovered and put an end to any possibility of a comeback. Toribio finished his night with a 37-yard touchdown run that put La Quinta up 49-34 – the eventual final score. “We’re obviously disappointed in how we played defensively,” Coach Armstrong said after the game. “We did a very good job of stopping the run after we made some adjustments at halftime but gave up way too many big plays on defense. Fortunately on offense we were

able to answer and score some.” La Quinta’s defense turned it on in the second half, despite allowing six more points than they did in the first. The Blackhawks defense was able to force an interception, two punts and a turnover on downs in the final two quarters, where they only managed to force one punt in the first two. Toribio finished with 322 yards on 39 carries and an astounding five touchdowns. In addition to his rushing and passing touchdowns, Avina ended the game with 90 yards passing. Even in a reduced roll, it was important to have Avina – one of the team leaders – on the field. When asked about how important it was to have Avina on the field for this game, coach Armstrong simply said, “Huge”. Still with some issues to be resolved before next game, the Blackhawks (9-2 overall, 6-0 in DVL) travel to Moreno Valley to take on the respectable Vista Del High School Lago Ravens (11-1 overall, 4-1 / 1st place Mountain Valley League). Game starts at 7 pm. The Rest of the Valley The Palm Springs Indians and Shadow Hills Knights won their respective games, while the Palm Desert Aztecs and the Cathedral City Lions were not as fortunate. On Friday, the Indians (102 overall, 5-1 DVL) travel to Hesperia High School to take on the Scorpions (6-5 overall, 3-2 Mojave River) and the Knights (9-2 overall, 6-0 in De Anza) are host the Nipomo High School Titans (7-4 overall, 3-1 Northern League).
