Decorated golf carts and bands marched down Palm Desert’s famous shop-’til-you-drop El Paseo. Story and Photos by Pat Krause Palm Desert held its annual Golf Cart Parade on Oct. 30th with close to 90 entries. The parade is always held on El Paseo with people and children lining the streets early in the day to get a good spot to watch the parade. The event started at 8 am with a Rotary Pancake Breakfast on San Luis Rey. There is always a free kid’s play area where families can let their kids enjoy not just the parade but the other

events too. Many children came in costume to be a part of the Parade’s activities. The police officers that were policing the crowd also rode their motorcycles and would stop to give small children a police decal to wear. Vendors lined the center of El Paseo to make sure everyone would have food and refreshments. Businesses also set up booths to show their wares. Judging of the entries began at 10am, but the trophies were not handed

out until almost noon. There was a fly over at noon and then the Parade began. The color guard and our local Marines were the first to start the Parade John Calahan from the TV show. ALL MY CHILDREN were the Grand Marshall, and he came dressed for the part of the Halloween theme. The Awards ceremony was held on the corner of El Paseo and San Luis Rey. Entries waited for the results. The Sweepstakes Trophy, best

Story and Photo by Pat Krause The McCallum theatre brought a TV star to its stage on Oct. 29th. Jane Lynch is best known for her TV roles in Glee and Two and a Half Men. She used her humor to tell the crowd that she was sure they didn’t know what she would be doing for her show. Jane is also a Broadway Star playing Miss Hannigan in Annie. This is one multi talented lady as she really can sing. She has a husky voice but can hit the high notes with ease. The evening started with

the band playing several songs with a trumpeter and a sax player doing the leads. The band also did solos as each artist’s name was announced. They brought out a male singer, Tim Davis that played six seasons on GLEE. Davis did an amazing job with a beautiful voice. Then Jane came on stage to sing and joke with the audience. She sang a couple of solo numbers before she brought out another singer, Kate Flannery. Kate Flannery is best known for her role as Meredith,

The drunk, on the hit TV show, The Office. Jane and Kate sang Mr. Monotony as a duet, and it showed their talent as singers. Jane has won many awards, is a Broadway actress, is the host for NBC’s Hollywood Game Night, a TV actress and comedienne. She is also an author with a best-selling book, Happy Accidents. She sang with such animation that it was fun to watch her. She has toured with her show, See Jane Sing, for many months.

Other awards were: Presidents Trophy went to Panther Patrol; Mayors Trophy went to Abraham Lincoln Ghosts. The School Spirit Trophy went to C V Cheer group and the Best Cart for Charity was awarded to Loving All Animals. The

Humor Trophy went to the YMCA float, and the most humorous trophy was given to Venus De Milo. The Theme Trophy was awarded to the Palm Valley School. These awards are highly prized as a lot of hours go into making these floats and there are many children involved. An exciting time for children who participate and those those come to watch. Adults are always in awe of the way the golf carts are decorated.

What Can we Learn from the management of the Chicago Cubs?

By Janice Gough Watching the Chicago Cubs pave their way to the World Series has been thrilling. Ask, Judy Shea, a devout fan and a Chicago original! Their success is based on solid management principles taught in B-schools every day. Here are a few of them: 1. Allow freedom within the framework. Manager Joe Maddon allows his coaches and players to evolve on their own timeline. When Anthony Rizzo’s bat lost its heat, it was an obvious drain to the rotation, but there weren’t the usual angry faces and curse words from the dugout. Similarly, employees need to have freedom to move,

create and evolve within the rules of the organization. The Cubs didn’t stifle Rizzo like many clubhouses counting on their ace during playoffs. Good leaders like Maddon know Rizzo realizes what needs to happen. 2. Believe in and support your team. Even with the occasional loss, Maddon has noted it’s not best “to take a trip to Negative Town,” the natural path of human nature. Instead of pulling low performers, he pumps the lineup with struggling hitters, indicating he never believed they couldn’t pull out of it. And it paid off when these hitters all made a difference in the game later with home runs or RBIs. When the Cubs skipper says he believes and supports his players, he shows it, too. 3. Hold everyone accountable. Another key lesson Maddon instills is holding everyone accountable, including himself. He does this through the “Try Not to Suck” motto. Humor is known to resonate more with teams than mandates filled with obvious pressure like “Win Every Game.” The former is simple yet profound enough that everyone can relate to it—even my own kids use it for homework or sports. 4. Use emotional intelligence. An experienced and successful manager

like Maddon is emotionally intelligent. When bringing a new player into the clubhouse, he’s careful to consider not only the player’s stats but his personality as well. For Maddon, emotional intelligence is in play both on and off the field. He knows when the team needs a break from the pressure and scrutiny and lightens the mood with zoo animals, dressing up in ‘70s gear or pajama road trips. Good leaders know how to re-energize their team. 5. Gain respect before making big moves. Good management skills are not limited to the field either. Team owners the Ricketts family brought promise to Chicago

but didn’t hastily change things with the ballclub. They made subtle changes at first, and once they gained the respect of the city and fans, they made bolder moves. With any new manager or coach, fans expect an overnight sensation the first or second season. 6. Create a readily understood strategy. The Ricketts family and Cubs President Theo Epstein took the time to assess the situation, create a strategy everyone can understand (the Rickettses’ three founding principles: a) be a good neighbor; b) preserve Wrigley; c) win the World Series), and then make necessary

changes. As a result, Wrigley has become a better ball park, the surrounding neighborhood will flourish for decades, and now, after 71 years, the Cubs are in the World Series. The ultimate goal in business is not only to achieve profits, but to help others as well— all of which the Cubs have successfully achieved.

By Desert Star Staff With just over three weeks to go before the November 8 election, advocates backing a variety of issues are urging people to get out and vote. One issue that hasn’t gotten much coverage in the presidential campaign, according to Isaiah Wilson external affairs manager with the National Black Justice Coalition, is the high number

of people in the LGBT community - especially people of color - who are ending up in the country’s jails and prisons. He said it’s important to support candidates who will back legislation to improve people’s lives. “We need to vote and use the powers that democracy gives us in this nation to really hold those in authority accountable,” Wilson said.

“So, that looks like electing folks who have committed to criminal justice reform, specifically addressing the issues that show up time and time again for our community.” Wilson cited a report from early 2016 called, “Unjust: How the Broken Criminal Justice System Fails LGBT People of Color.” It found that that population faced greater challenges

in accessing legal counsel, obtaining pretrial release, and getting a fair sentence. Some strides have been made to protect the LGBT community, Wilson said, but there’s still a long way to go. Whichever candidate wins the White House, he said, they need to make sure more protections are in place. “The Obama Administration has done more for LGBT equality than all of the former administrations combined,” Wilson said. “So, it’s important - whoever does get into office - that they are able to build on that when it comes to marriage equality, when it comes to even expounding upon the robust hate crime legislation that President Obama signed as soon as he got into office.” LGBT young people who are black reported that they are frequently singled out by police, Wilson said. And transgender women of color complain that officers frequently assume they are engaged in prostitution. Wilson said that it is important for LGBT people of color to be included in conversations about necessary changes in police culture and establishing trust between communities and law enforcement.

Calif. Cuts Number of Uninsured Children by More than Half

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California has made the biggest recent gains in the country in getting

children signed up for health insurance, according to a new report. Researchers at the Georgetown University Center for Children and

Families found the Golden State cut its number of uninsured children by 55 percent between 2013 and 2015, just after the Affordable

Care Act went into effect. Mayra Alvarez, president of the Children’s Partnership credits the state’s decision to fully implement the ACA, expanding Medi-Cal and creating a state marketplace, Covered California, that makes it easy to sign up. “As a one-stop shopping center, families are notified about what programs for which they or their children may qualify, both private plans, and public programs like Medi-Cal, making the process easier, but also helping secure coverage for more children that are eligible,” she explained. The report said 97 percent of California’s nine million children now have health insurance, which beats the national average by almost two percentage points. California’s numbers will look even better by next year, because the state began allowing undocumented

By Desert Star Staff More than 10,000 people in the United States turn 65 years old every day, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. This growth in the aging population has led to an increased number of people who care for loved ones in their homes. “While many people are happy to take care of aging loved ones, playing this caregiver role can still be physically, mentally and emotionally draining,” says Jill Turner-Mitchael, senior vice president, Sam’s Club Consumables and Health and Wellness. “As a result, it can be easy for caregivers to forget about caring for themselves at times.” To help, Turner-Mitchael and the Sam’s Club Pharmacists are offering time-saving, stress-reducing tips to help caregivers support their loved ones while also maintaining their own well-being. • Focus on food and fitness. Maintain a healthy, energy-boosting diet that includes organic fruits and vegetables, lean protein and vitamins. Try to stay

active, as well. To keep yourself accountable, consider using a wearable device that tracks your daily diet and activity level. • Log on. To save time and effort, shop online when possible. In today’s digital world, it’s easy to get everything you need with the click of a button. Companies like Sam’s Club provide everything from groceries to personal care products online for those who don’t have time to make it into a club. • Give yourself a break. Convene a family meeting to discuss any challenges that you’re facing and see what others can do to lighten your load. Identify someone who can fill in for you for periods of time, so you can take breaks outside of the home to relax and refresh. Doing so will likely help you return to your role with even more energy. • Seek support. Find a caregiver support group that can help you make connections with others who understand your perspective. Seek out other existing resources that are designed to support caregivers, as well. For example, Sam’s

Club recently launched a new program for family caregivers, including a dedicated webpage that helps members find the products, expert advice and savings they need to make caregiving easier. Visit SamsClub.com/ caregiving or the kiosks in select locations around the country for more information. • As the number of caregivers rises, so does the importance of offering resources that make their

lives easier,” says TurnerMitchael. “As a club of the community, we are working to do just that, so caregivers can focus on what is most important – the health of their loved ones and themselves.” • Engage your employer. Around 42 million Americans act as caregivers while also working outside of the home, according to AARP. If you are juggling work and home responsibilities, ask your manager about perks or

policies that may help you find balance, such as flexible work schedules, emergency time off or on-site eldercare. Neglecting your own health does no one any favors, so don’t let caregiving mean the end of self-care. With the right resources and resolve, rest assured that you can provide the best care possible while also maintaining your own health. StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff MINNEAPOLIS – A new study shows Minnesota has the highest rate of so-called child care deserts in the country. The Center for American Progress looked at statistics from eight states to compare the number of children under age five to the number of child care facilities.

Report author Rasheed Malik, a policy analyst for the Center’s Early Childhood Policy Team, says Minnesota has about 1,250 child care centers, but there are roughly 350,000 children age five or younger. “Minnesota, more than 70 percent of the population lives in child care deserts,” Malik states. “And this is also a disproportionately

rural phenomenon. “Two-thirds of the rural child care deserts didn’t have a child care center at all within the bounds of that ZIP code.” The Twin Cities region is one of the largest urban child care deserts in the study. About two-thirds of the Minneapolis-St. Paul population lives in a child care desert, which amounts

to 1.2 million people. Malik says in the decades to come, children of color will become the majority, yet they’re more likely to live in child care deserts, especially Hispanic children. “This is an opportunity for us to think about our future, future workforce, our future innovators,” he stresses. “These children

deserve the best start that we can possibly give them, and high quality child care and early education is one of the safest investments we can make as a society.” The study says helping families pay for child care may drive the market. If more families can afford to enroll their children, then more facilities will be built.

children to enroll in MediCal this past May. So far, parents have signed up more than 135,000 children. Joan Alker, executive director of the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, said polls show most Americans are not aware of the success of these programs. “About half of Americans thought the number of uninsured children was actually increasing,” she said. “Only 28 percent were aware that the number has actually gone down. So, this is a success that we’ve had as a country, it’s not well known, and it’s something we can all feel good about.” The report said California still has more than 300,000 uninsured children, which is the second largest number in the country, behind Texas.

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – A bill passed by the New York City Council to protect freelance workers from wage theft is being called a historic first. The Freelance Isn’t Free Act passed unanimously late last week. A report issued in 2015 found that 70 percent of New York City freelance workers reported problems getting paid. Caitlin Pearce, director of member engagement at the Freelancers Union, said the measure will give them extra leverage if they have to take a client to court. “The freelancer would be able to get double damages as well as attorney’s fees,” Pearce said. “And clients who have repeated offenses might be liable for civil penalties as well.” The bill also requires a

written contract for all work over $800, and establishes a formal mechanism for the Department of Consumer Affairs to enforce freelancers’ labor rights. The category of “freelancer” includes self-employed people in a variety of fields, from writing, editing and photography to music and bookkeeping. The Freelancers Union represents about 300,000 freelancers nationwide. According to Pearce, those who aren’t getting paid are losing an average of $6,000 a year. “It’s really common for our members to go into debt, to rack up huge credit card bills, and to even have to rely on government assistance as a result of nonpayment,” Pearce said.

privatize public education, according to a new report. Stan Salett, the report’s co-author and president of the Foundation for the Future of Youth, spent more than four decades in public education and helped launch the nation’s Head Start and Upward Bound programs. He says in the past two decades, a small group of billionaires, including News Corporation’s Rupert Murdoch, who once called public schools an “untapped $500 billion sector,” have worked to assert private control over public education to make money. “And that’s what’s at play now,” Salett stresses. “You’ve got a lot of money on one side going in to create a privatized school system that becomes part of the new

marketplace for hedge funds and Wall Street investors.” The Independent Media Institute study found 40 percent of the nation’s 6,700 charter schools are part of corporate chains or franchises. Salett says many charters do good work, and are operated by and accountable to their communities. But the report recommends a national moratorium on the rapid growth of charter schools until the industry’s governing structures and business models can be assessed and improved. The study outlines how public tax dollars follow students who enroll in charters, taking money away from already struggling public systems. Salett says most major

U.S. cities are now divided into private and public tracks, and argues the future of one of the nation’s few institutions where people from diverse backgrounds come together is at risk. “Different language backgrounds, cultural backgrounds, racial backgrounds,” he stresses. “The aim of public schools has always been to create a place where the so-called melting pot can occur.” Salett says companies frequently mix nonprofit and for-profit wings to win taxpayer subsidies, further boosting profits. He adds some charters have also successfully lobbied to eliminate democratically elected boards, public oversight and accountability.

Model Legislation to Stop Freelancer Wage Theft Passed in NYC

Seventy percent of freelancers report problems getting paid for their work. (Freelancers Union/Flickr) In the New York City metropolitan area, 38 percent of workers do freelance work, contributing $230 billion to the economy. The Freelance Isn’t Free Act is the first of its kind in the

nation, but it will only apply in New York City. Pearce said that wage theft is a problem facing freelancers across the country. “We now have a piece of legislation that can serve as a model, that can go to other

cities and states that want to implement it,” she said. Mayor Bill de Blasio has not said whether he will sign the bill, but his office has signaled support for the legislation.

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California stands out for its work in turning young lives around, according to a new report on youth prisons. The Annie E. Casey Foundation research pulls together evidence of the ineffectiveness of youth correctional facilities, showing they are expensive and prone to abuse, and concluding they fail at reform. It recommends closing all youth prisons and reinvesting in other types of programs. Foundation president and CEO Patrick McCarthy says California is a good example, as a number of juvenile justice reforms reduced the number of youths in state custody from 10,000 in 1996. “The last figures that I saw is that they had 700 in those

facilities today because they provided incentives for the counties and the communities to take responsibility for their own children,” he relates. The report notes that California also passed legislation to only admit youths to state facilities that have committed serious offenses, enacted programs to increase prevention and closed eight of its 11 large youth corrections facilities. According to the report, systemic maltreatment has been documented in youth prison facilities in nearly half the states since 2000, including California. McCarthy says it’s the result of a model focused on security and control. “They are staffed by corrections officers and, in some facilities, things like

Mace have been used, long extended isolation, shackles, handcuffs – very brutal methods of controlling a young population,” he states. Instead of what he calls the outmoded assumption that locking up young people improves safety, McCarthy says the corrections culture should focus on rehabilitating them. “We’ve got to build a juvenile justice system that’s based on the very simple principle of developing young people’s capacity, giving them opportunity,” he stresses. “Holding them accountable, of course, is also very important, but doing it in a way that provides them a path to get back on track.” According to the report, youth incarceration rates in the United States far exceed those of other countries.

Planning for 2040: Engaging Kids in Political Process By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolinians of all political persuasions can be heard lamenting a lack of choices on the ballot in this election. So, how can we ensure that future elections will include a bevy of qualified candidates? Look at the youngest generation, says one North Carolina author. Mary Swann Parry recently released her first children’s book, “Sadie McGrady Runs for President,” a fictional story of a young girl’s pursuit of the White House. Parry said she wrote the book after she found a lack of resources for her young daughter. “They start learning about the government as early as third grade and how it works,” Parry said. “And I think it that would be terrific to have more of these conversations when they’re little and when

they’re having these goals.” The author said she hopes her female character will inspire girls specifically, since women make up more than half of the populace but only 19 percent of Congress, 25 percent of state legislators and 12 percent of governors, according to the Center for American Women and Politics. Parry said that in her experience, teaching young children they can run for office someday is enough to plant the seed for later in life. “You’re teaching them what foods to eat and to get enough exercise, and you’re listening to them - what they might want to be when they grow up,” Parry said. “But we’re not really, in all households, talking about civic engagement and how you not just make sure you’re a voter and a regular voter

Props 65 and 67: Clearing Up the Confusion

Even small bits of plastic bags can get trapped in a turtle’s stomach, causing an untimely death. (NOAA) By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California voters soon will

decide if the state’s ban on plastic shopping bags will stay or blow in the wind. The 2014

ban is on hold pending the outcome of Proposition 67, a simple referendum asking voters to decide whether or not to uphold the ban. Then there’s Proposition 65, which Steven Maviglio, spokesperson with the Yes on 67 campaign said complicates things. That ballot initiative would redirect a 10cent bag fee from retailers to what opponents say is an unclear environmental fund. Maviglio noted Proposition 65 will only go into effect if it gets fewer votes in favor than Proposition 67. “Prop 65 is on the ballot only because the plastic industry put it there just to confuse voters,” he said. “The people that want to protect the plastic bag ban want a “no” vote on 65 and a “yes” on 67. And so with 17 measures on our ballot, it’s very confusing and daunting.”

While Prop 65 supporters claim the measure would help protect the environment, opponents argue it’s an attempt to distract voters. Top financial backers of 65 are plastics companies, who also oppose 67. If 67 loses, the ban will be lifted. Meanwhile, the industry contends plastic bags are recyclable and account for small amounts of litter. But Maviglio counters the bags are not biodegradable and one of the biggest culprits of waste in the world. According to the World Economic Forum, there will be more plastic than fish per pound in the oceans by 2050. Joshua Hanthorn, program associate with Defenders of Wildlife in California noted that plastic debris is responsible for the deaths of nearly 100,000 marine mammals each year, as well as birds and fish. He said endangered sea turtles are

particularly susceptible to the effects of plastic-bag trash. “It gets trapped in their stomach, which prevents them from properly swallowing food,” he explained. “Many bags are found in turtles and it causes their unfortunate fatality. That’s the number two cause of sea turtles’ death throughout the world.” Maviglio believes Californians understand the dangers of plastic shopping bags, with bans already in place in 151 communities. He said many shoppers are either bringing their own bags or not using one at all. “What we’ve seen in these communities is upwards of a 90-percent reduction in overall bag use,” he added. “So it’s not a switch from plastic to paper; it’s just a dramatic reduction in bag use totally. So the impact on consumers is very small.” He said if the ban is upheld, California would be a national leader by becoming the first state to prohibit plastic shopping bags

How Women’s Concepts of Beauty are Changing

The modern age has expanded the scope of what Americans consider beautiful, while at the same time, it has also introduced social media -- an ever-present reminder of one’s appearance. In an effort to better understand these shifts, L’Oréal Paris recently commissioned a study with Ipsos engaging women on the topic and shared some top insights on this beauty evolution. Changing Values: Women are changing how they view beauty to be a more holistic, progressive and optimistic vision. A majority of women see beauty differently than they did 10 years ago. -- not perfection -- and are optimistic about continuing to be beautiful as they age. Most surveyed admit that while women in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s used to be considered to “look old,” women of the same age today are “in their prime.” Furthermore, beauty standards have changed and expanded as we’ve become a more culturally diverse, global community. Skincare still “Worth It”: While many factors play a role in beauty, the care and appearance of skin determines how beautiful a woman feels, according to the survey respondents, particularly in the social media age. Beauty routines can be time-consuming; however,

women strongly believe the skin care element is “worth it.” “We’re seeing a major shift in routines of millennial women. Four out of the five skincare products used are cleansers. This is dramatically different from what we saw in the past,” says Dr. Rocio Rivera, L’Oréal Paris director of scientific communications. Among the top regimens women are incorporating into their skincare is the use of at-home facial masks that cleanse and beautify skin by absorbing oils and impurities. “I am often asked ‘what are little ways to make a difference at home?’ Hands-down a mask is usually the answer,” says Vanessa Hernandez, November 2, 2016

celebrity esthetician. “Finding one tailored for your skin type is so important and from there, it’s like a mini facial in the comfort of your home.” To find one tailored for you, first determine your skin type. The Pure-Clay Masks from L’Oréal, for example, are made from clay minerals sourced globally and are offered in three varieties for specific skin needs -- whether you want to reduce excess shine, reduce dull skin and even out skin tone, or exfoliate and tighten pores. Inner Beauty: How women feel on the inside dictates how beautiful they feel overall. When describing what makes them beautiful, the women surveyed described a number

of emotional traits -- and these qualities vary by generation. Growing confidence is important to Millennials as they move from their 20s to 30s. There is hope among them that they will continue to grow stronger and healthier. For boomers, staying active and feeling young is important to them as they age. Personality, however, is timeless. Women of all ages and ethnicities believe their outlook on life is a huge part of what makes them feel beautiful, concluded the researchers. From new skincare habits to new outlooks, women are viewing beauty differently these days and taking different steps to achieve it. StatePoint www.desertstarweekly.com

HOROSCOPES ARIES

You are being asked to create order and organization in your daily life. To bring to all relationships a greater level of love. To tend to resources held in common with others with greater care. To pursue a course of study that will stabilize you as well as please you. To bring forth a transformation in your work. And to realize that your selfidentity is going through another change. Study the art & science of astrology.

TAURUS You work harder than most, and can be more measured than most. This is an observation. It acknowledges your careful methods, deliberate actions so what you create is always of value. You like money and possessions but sometimes take risks with spending. Is your energy equated to selfworth? If you have less energy you are less valuable? This is incorrect thinking. You are steady, constant, reliable, good and pure value.

GEMINI When there is a mental approach in any direction and in connection with the many opposites in manifestation, you have the emergence of the divine Messenger, able to comprehend extremes and relate them divinely to each other. Gemini is pre-eminently the sign of the messenger,

NOVEMBER 2 - 8, 2016 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

and this sign produces many of the messengers of God as they appear down the ages…the revealers of new divine truths. Are you doing your job as a messenger?

CANCER Great desires and/or aspiration are part of your being. When there isn’t enough of something we learn how to cherish. What in your life do you feel there isn’t enough of? There’s a Mantram we say each morning. You will like it. “Let reality govern my every thought and truth be the master of my life.” You understand this Mantram. You allow nothing pretentious in your life. Plant and tend several Boswellia sacra (frankincense) trees.

LEO You have become a mother lion, deeply protective of home, family, friends, relationships, life events. Are you living a somewhat solitary existence? Much of what you do, feel and think is both instinctual and intuitive. The two are different aspects of the s/Self. One is our animal heritage, the other our angelic heritage. We are from the stars… stardust. Your mind seeks to know humanity’s origins.

VIRGO A new energy has come over you. You’re active, more dynamic, responding quickly to situations. At times you can be suddenly creative.

You wonder why. It’s Mars affecting your creative selfidentity. At times you may feel angry, quick to judge. Have the intentions to be direct, truthful and spontaneous. Don’t “kill the Buddha on the road”. Pursue creativity instead.

LIBRA Attempt to regard the ideas and opinions of others as valuable. They hold truths that your heart seeks to assimilate. You need someone around who makes you laugh; with a sense of humor you understand. You need to laugh yourself out of the veils surrounding your life. These are natural veils. However, you’re tired of them. Watch the video of Alan Watts in Hollywood teaching the Laughing Meditation. And laugh with him.

SCORPIO Your purpose is to interact with many people in order to know (recognize) yourself. Your other purpose, also important, at this time is to help others, especially in groups (very special groups), learn their identity, as they articulate goals and discover cooperation. Like Aquarius, you have many acquaintances, some friends, few intimates. This year you are re-designing yourself.

SAGITTARIUS Things are not easy at times. Perhaps you feel a bit stifled, more tenuous about asserting yourself, at times defeated

that all actions are futile. This is temporary. Your energy is hiding away with your courage. Past events and memories flood your mind. Deep down you are strong, able to work independently, and you believe in yourself. We believe in you, too.

CAPRICORN Whatever you are doing, you work hard, climb the ladder, set goals, meet them, create boundaries and move ahead. Is there someone elderly or a parent figure needing your help? Perhaps it’s a memory or a dream. You are very serious and respectful. You are original. And a paradox. Something has occurred in your life that has transformed you. The transformation will continue.

and “have their being?”. A community that is educational and healing? You work best independently as a leader. One of your rulers as a Pisces is Pluto. You understand power. Power needs love to be effective. You’re very skilled in both. An unusual time is ahead with new and different experiences. Be generous, be kind and love more. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.

AQUARIUS Always you have needed a challenging and interesting partner, someone steadfast in their love, unafraid of conflict, equally aware politically and with the ability to practice compromise. Actually you might consider a bit more compromise, too. Are you able to understand others’ points of view? Make that important decision on the side of safety. You will want to study something soon.

Docrats sue Trump & GOP, claiming minority voters intimidation By Desert Star Staff The Republican Party, GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump and his surrogate Roger Stone are conspiring to intimidate and suppress minority voters, the Democrats claimed in four newly filed lawsuits in battleground states. Documents filed in Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Ohio accuse Trump, the GOP, Stone and his Stop the Steal super PAC of “conspiring to threaten, intimidate, and thereby prevent minority voters in urban neighborhoods from voting in the 2016 election.” The Democrats argue this violates the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, both passed in order to penalize the intimidation and suppression of minorities voting. They are asking the courts to provide immediate relief by declaring the Republican “exit polling” and “citizen journalist” initiatives illegal. Though each complaint was filed on behalf of the states’ Democratic parties,

the attorney in every case is Marc C. Elias, listed as partner at Perkins Coie LLP. Elias is also general counsel for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Last week, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) filed a motion before a federal court in New Jersey, accusing the Republicans of being in contempt of a 1982 Consent Decree that settled claims of voter intimidation in several states. Under the terms of the settlement, which federal judges have been extending ever since, the GOP has accepted the obligation to “refrain from undertaking any ballot security activities in polling places or election districts where the racial or ethnic composition of such districts is a factor in the decision to conduct, or the actual conduct of, such activities there,” among other things. It is not clear whether the courts can actually provide the Democrats with specific relief

in these cases, since “voter intimidation” is a vague term and difficult to enforce, law professor Rick Hasen wrote on Monday. “But the suits will first bring publicity to the activities, and second get these parties on record stating that they do not plan on engaging in voter intimidation, which itself could be useful in the event of problems on election day.” Hasen teaches law and political science at University of California, Irvine and has authored two books on US elections, “The Voting Wars” and “Plutocrats United.” He also maintains the Election Law Blog. Trump has made much of the rumors that the Democratic National Committee “rigged” the primaries in favor of Clinton and against her rival, Bernie Sanders – insinuating that the party might try to do the same thing in the general election. The DNC has responded by accusing Trump of undermining the very principles of American democracy – on behalf of Russia. November 2, 2016

On Friday, four people across the US were arrested in connection with electoral malfeasance. In two of the cases – one in Florida and one in Virginia – members of advocacy groups filed fraudulent voter registration forms. A Florida woman working for Miami-Dade County’s elections department was accused of submitting at

least two fraudulent votes for a Democratic mayoral candidate. A woman in Des Moines, Iowa was charged after casting an early ballot for Trump – twice. “I wasn’t planning on doing it twice, it was a spur of the moment,” Terri Rote said, according to Iowa Public Radio, before adding, “The polls are rigged.” www.desertstarweekly.com

E N T E RTA I N M E N T Suggestions for Fall Fun

BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

It’s hard to believe that 2016 is coming to an end. Suddenly, November has arrived and there are only two more months left in the year. The good news is, November and December usher in many excellent films, films that will be contenders for the coveted Oscar in 2017. Also Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah and Kwanzaa are just around the corner. These festive holidays are special times, times when we get together with family and friends. One unique way to get into the holiday spirit is to share a good movie or theatre evening with those we love. To help you plan, here are a few suggestions that range from

For starters, mark your calendars for Nov. 4, 5 and 6. That’s when Disney’s “Doctor Strange” arrives at the El Capitan Theatre. For the first three days, Fri., Sat., and Sunday, there will be a character “Meet and Greet” at the theatre where you can meet costumed characters from the film. Additionally, on Nov. 3, “Hacksaw Ridge,” directed by Mel Gibson, arrives on the big screen. The film, based on the true story of

a conscientious objector named Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), is about a young man who saved the lives of 75 men without ever carrying or firing a gun during one of the bloodiest battles in WW II. Doss, who felt the war was justified, but killing was wrong, was the first conscientious objector to ever receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. E N T E RTA I N M E N T Ewan McGregor – On Directing “American Pastoral” BY BEVERLY COHN

It is no accident that the perennial youthful and stunningly handsome Ewan McGregor is an international acting treasure who has racked up a list of impressive credits. His breakout role was in “Trainspotting” in which he played a heroin addict. Since then McGregor starred in such films as the prequel trilogy of “Star Wars” playing Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi; the love-struck poet in “Moulin Rouge;” the son in both “Big Fish,” and “Beginners;” as well principal roles in “Black Hawk Down;” “Cassandra’s Dream;” “Emma;” “Ghost Writer;” “Angels & Demons;” “Last Days in the Desert;” “The Impossible;” “August: Osage County;” and “Salmon Fishing in Yemen.” He earned the Number 9 spot on Channel 4’s Greatest Movie Stars of All Time. He also received accolades for his stage performances in “Guys and Dolls” and “Othello.” Born in Scotland, McGregor currently lives in Los Angeles, is married to Eve Mavrakis, and has four children. McGregor made his directorial debut with “American Pastoral,” a film based on Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The story follows an American family as it deals with the shattering of their comfortable middle-class life when their daughter Merry (Dakota Fanning) becomes an anti-war activist and commits an act of terror with dire consequences. The dad, Swede, (Ewan McGregor) struggles to understand and reconnect with his daughter while his wife Dawn, (Jennifer Connelly) drifts off into an altered reality. The film costars David Strathairn, Peter Riegert, Rupert Evans, Uzo Aduba, and Rita Cohen. McGregor recently sat down with a select group of journalists, and the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes. Have you been asked why you picked “American Pastoral” as your maiden directorial adventure?

McGregor: (Laughs heartily) We started our press tour in Toronto about a month ago and then we spent three weeks in Europe. It was amazing. Of course it’s a privilege for me to be out in front for a movie I’ve directed. I still pinch myself. I sat in a million rooms and was asked that precise question: “So, why did you choose Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel as your directorial debut?” I can hear it in my sleep and wake up with that in my head. My answer is “why not?” (Laughter) Obviously, you couldn’t do the whole novel so how were the choices made? McGregor: I thought what John Romano did with the adaptation beautifully pulled out the central story through a lens, which explored American history as told through this family. It consists of a mother and father who were products of the post-war generation in the 50s, and the American dream, which they embodied. Then there’s the daughter who embodies the 1960s, which was an extraordinary time in American history. This was a time when the parents’ generation collided with their children’s generation in a spectacular way over what was happening both in Vietnam and here at home. I think that was brilliantly observed by Romano. On top of that, having spent so much time with the book from late 2014, when I was doing “The Real Thing” on Broadway, I tried to soak up as much of what I felt the writer was exploring. We started shooting in September and I directed John’s script in the way I felt about the book.

Photo Courtesy of Lakeshore Entertainment mind that Roth doesn’t have any kids, so it’s even more amazing that he wrote so accurately about parenting and about this father/daughter relationship. I have four girls and absolutely know what that relationship is about, so when I read the script for the first time, it broke my heart because as a dad, I know how I feel about my girls. How were you able to relate to the character’s feelings of loss? McGregor: Although this is not a very extreme loss, I can relate it to my eldest daughter Clara, who is 20, and has gone off to college. She’s not in the house any more when I wake up in the morning and have breakfast. It’s strange and it is a loss even though it’s perfectly mundane and ordinary. Yet, unlike the Dakota Fanning character, Clara is still very much part of our lives.

How do you make the transition from director, which is objective, to actor, which is subjective? McGregor: I think it very much has to do with the preparation. I was always going to be in the film. I didn’t think not to be in it when I became the director. (Laughs) No one could play this part like me. (Laughter) When I auditioned I was very tough on of myself. (Laughter) The casting couch was very interesting. (Laughter) Somewhat of a solo What is your observation affair. have such a great relationship with Clara, but it’s different now. I go to visit her in New York City and hang out with her. I find myself about to parent her and I think ok I can’t do that any more. Like, where’s your jacket or why are you wearing those shoes? (Laughter) So I was thinking about that when I first read the script, which is why I was so attached to it.

November 2, 2016

How did you come up with the very beautiful look of the film? McGregor: We used Edward Hopper’s paintings as our color palette and used a lot of his dark greens, yellows, and reds and then we allowed the colors to bleed out as the films goes on. Having found all the locations, I spent a great deal of time with Martin Ruhe, our cinematographer, dreaming up how the scenes might play. I would sit next to him

with a white board and for two weeks we drew every location that we had found and I would sketch out how I imagined the scene playing. Then we would discuss how we wanted to shoot it - if it was going to be a still frame and no movement, or if the camera was going to move, what was the reason. How did pre-production preparation help you with your character of Swede? McGregor: Since all of the prep work was done before we started shooting, when we finally hit the set, it was very easy for me. I had spent nine months thinking about the Swede. Because he’s a central character in the movie, he’s in the middle of all my imaginings about the film. The result was that I felt I had never been better prepared to play a part in my life. How did you work with the actors? McGregor: I did something Danny Boyle does with the actors, which is to clear the set and as an actor, I know that absolutely works. Then it was just me and the actors. We would shut the door and then there would be a moment where we felt we were getting away with something because there was no director on the set. (Laughter) I would say ok this is what I imagined, me here, you there, and let’s see if that works, and we would try it. If it didn’t feel right, we would explore until it did feel right. You worked with Danny Boyle on “Trainspotting,” “Shallow Grave,” and “A Life Less Ordinary” and recently worked with him again on “T2: Trainspotting.” Was it a different experience for you as an actor now that you’ve become a director? McGregor: I finished my last day on “American Pastoral” at Warner Bros. I literally got in Continues on Page 11 www.desertstarweekly.com

MUSIC Far-flung heroes highlighted on new releases BY ROBERT KINSLER

A new album from Barry Gibb, a fitting tribute to the late Jerry Garcia, a unique collaboration examining loss, stoner rock from Sweden and a legendary live collection are among the far-flung sounds to be discovered via a number of exciting new releases.

Artist: Barry Gibb Title: In The Now (Columbia Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Bee Gees, Barry Gibb Tell me more: Barry Gibb’s first album in 32 years, “In The Now” showcases the former Bee Gee’s fantastic voice, sterling songwriting and his uncanny gift for creating intoxicating soundscapes that demand repeated listening. Time has been kind to Gibb’s 50-year legacy as a songwriter, with “I Started a Joke,” “Run to Me,” “Jive Talkin’,” “To Love Somebody” and “Stayin’ Alive” recognized as enduring pop masterworks. On “In The Now,” Gibb joins forces with his children (sons Ashley Gibb and Stephen Gibb, the latter who performs guitar on the collection) to create striking confessionals in the 21st century. The driving power pop gem “Blowin’ A Fuse,” affecting “Home Truth Song” and impactful “Meaning of the Word” are early standouts. Gibb celebrates the legacy of his family (his brother Andy died in 1988, while Maurice died in 2003 and Robin died in 2012) on “End of the Rainbow,” written as Robin was dying; it is a lovely song that builds from a quiet ode with Gibb’s voice and piano to a more swelling symphonic fanfare before the song artfully segues back to a solemn and hushed finale. the Music of Jerry Garcia (Rounder Records) You might like if you enjoy: the Grateful Dead, Peter Frampton, Trampled by Turtles Tell me more: It takes an army of talented players to bring justice to Jerry Garcia’s stellar musical legacy, and fortunately that is how the stars align on the aptly-named “Dear Jerry: Celebrating the Music of Jerry Garcia.” Released by Rounder Records in multiple formats (Blu-ray, DVD, CD and digital download), the collection shimmers with the same magic that drew legions to follow the late Garcia and the Grateful Dead during the 30 years he led the band (1965-1995). The first track (a mini-medley of “The Wheel” and “Uncle John’s Band”) features Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh & Communion and stretches more than 16 minutes, and not a second is wasted. It’s honestly tough to highlight any of the tracks without criminally ignoring others just as deserving. That being said, a bluegrass take on “Shady Grove” featuring David Grisman, a rocking “(I’m a) Road Runner” with Peter Frampton on vocals and lead guitar, a wistful “Loser” courtesy of jam rockers moe and an Appalachian version of “Brown-Eyed Woman” from Trampled By Turtles scratches the surface of the power of the two & a half hour concert event staged on May 14, 2015 that is one of the finest tributes to a modern musical hero ever captured on film and audio (with true Dolby 5.1 surround stereo). Artist: Mark Collie & His Reckless Companions Title: Alive at Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: John Mellencamp, Johnny Cash, Kelly Willis Tell me more: In 2001, country-meets-rockabilly artist Mark Collie led a group of topflight musicians into Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in his home state of Tennessee to give several full-length performances. Collie hoped his appearance at one of the nation’s most infamous prisons might help spread a message of hope and redemption, but shuffles at his record label left a commercial release of the project in limbo - until now. Now that 15-year-old concert

recording has been released, and the good news is that “Mark Collie & His Reckless Companions: Alive At Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary” packs a punch far beyond the walls of the penitentiary that closed in 2009. The hardrocking Collie original “One More Second Chance,” a shimmering “Heaven Bound” (featuring songstress Kelly Willis on lead vocals), inspired “On The Day I Die,” anthemic “Reckless Companions” and an apt take on the Johnny Cash jewel “Folsom Prison Blues” make the wait for this fine live set more than worth the wait. This is rock that challenges the listener to be sure. While both the title track and “Gossip Hounds” are lilting and tuneful, the spoken word-anchored “Alligator Teeth & Coffee Grounds” and ferocious Pencils and Pistols” recall alt rock’s adventuresome origins. The hypnotic “Woman” is built on a simple repeating chord change and singer-songwriter Jesseo’s distinctive baritone wielded into a potent brew. “Close My Eyes” blends punk rock and spoken lyrics before a more textured and melodic chorus emerges. “Wall” is another great song, the mix of tunefulness, synthpop and lyrical repetition adding up to something riveting and original. FBI reopens Clinton investigation as new emails found

By Desert Star Staff The FBI has learned of more emails involving Hillary Clinton’s private email server while she headed the State Department, FBI Director James Comey told several members of Congress, telling them he is reopening the investigation. In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of email that appear to be pertinent” to Clinton’s investigation, Comey wrote to the chairs of several relevant congressional committees, adding that he was briefed about the messages on Thursday. “I agree that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation.” The FBI director cautioned, however, that the bureau has yet to assess the importance of the material, and that he doesn’t know how long that will take. In response to Comey’s letter, Hillary Clinton has called on the FBI to release

whatever information it has about the newly obtained emails ‘without delay.’ “I’ve now seen Director Comey’s letter to Congress. We are 11 days out from perhaps the most important election of our lifetimes, voting is already underway — so the American people deserve to get the full and complete facts immediately,” the presidential candidate said at a press conference during a campaign event at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa. “The director himself has said he doesn’t know whether the emails referenced in his letter are significant or not. I’m confident whatever they are will not change the conclusion reached in July [when FBI decided against prosecuting Clinton due to lack of grounds]. Therefore it’s imperative that the bureau explain this issue without any delay,” Clinton stressed. Following the FBI investigation and interviews with Clinton in July, it was decided she will not be prosecuted as there was not sufficient evidence to indict her. James Comey at the time called Clinton “extremely careless,” but said there were

no grounds to prosecute her. Clinton noted that the FBI had not yet contacted her with regard to this new information, and that therefore she was unaware what facts became known to the bureau that forced it to reopen the investigation against her. “We have not been contacted by anyone. First we knew about it is, I assume, when you knew about it, when this letter sent to Republican members of the House was released. So we don’t know the facts, which is why we are calling on the FBI to release all the information that it has,” she urged once more. Representative Bob Goodlatte (R-Virginia), chair of the House Judiciary Committee, praised the decision to reopen the case. “Now that the FBI has reopened the matter, it must conduct the investigation with impartiality and thoroughness,” he said in a statement. “The American people deserve no less and no one should be above the law.” Almost 15,000 new Clinton emails were discovered in September, but it’s unclear if the announced investigation relates to them

or other correspondence. The newly discovered emails are not related to Wikileaks or the Clinton Foundation, law enforcement sources told CNN’s Evan Perez. The messages were not found on the private email server in the Clintons’ New York residence, a government source told Reuters.

The emails were apparently discovered as part of the sexting probe into former Representative Anthony Weiner (D-New York), the New York Times reported. His electronic devices, as well as those belonging to his wife, senior Clinton aide Huma Abedin, were seized during that investigation.

Brazile out at CNN after WikiLeaks reveals she gave debate questions to Clinton camp

By Desert Star Staff Democratic party chair Donna Brazile is no longer at CNN, as WikiLeaks revealed that she sent debate questions to Hillary Clinton’s campaign at least twice. Confirming Brazile’s dismissal, CNN said it was “completely uncomfortable” with her conduct. Brazile’s role as a Democratic pundit at CNN was suspended in July, when she took on the role of interim chair for the Democratic National Committee following the scandal-ridden departure of Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. She resigned from the network on October 14, after revelations that she had given advance notice to the Clinton campaign of questions to be asked at a CNN-hosted debate. “We are completely www.desertstarweekly.com

uncomfortable with what we have learned about her interactions with the Clinton campaign while she was a CNN contributor,” the network said in a statement Monday, announcing Brazile’s dismissal and maintaining that they never gave her any questions or other materials in advance of debates. Emails published by WikiLeaks earlier show otherwise, however. A March 12 email from Brazile to Clinton’s communications director Jennifer Palmieri – published by WikiLeaks on October 11 – was titled: “From time to time I get the questions in advance,” and gave the campaign notice of a question about the death penalty at the upcoming CNN-hosted town hall between Clinton and

her rival for the Democratic nomination, Bernie Sanders. Another email, published Monday, shows Brazile giving advance notice to Palmieri and Clinton campaign chief John Podesta about the upcoming debate in Flint,

Michigan. Brazile was vice chair of the DNC at the time. “One of the questions directed to HRC tomorrow is from a woman with a rash,” says the subject line of Brazile’s email dated March 5, followed by: “Her family has lead poison and she will ask what, if anything, will Hillary do as president to help the ppl of Flint.” Both CNN and Brazile emphatically denied any wrongdoing prior to Monday’s release. “To be perfectly clear: We have never, ever given a town hall question to anyone beforehand,” said CNN. “As it pertains to the CNN Debates, I never had access to questions and would never have shared them with the candidates if I did,” Brazile said in a statement earlier this month.

On Monday morning, before CNN acknowledged her October 14 resignation, Brazile tweeted about “campaign hell” and quoted a Miami Herald article indicating that Donald Trump’s campaign had a “back channel” to WikiLeaks cofounder Julian Assange through political operative Roger Stone. Brazile and other senior Democrats have accused Assange of being a “Russian agent” and alternately dismissed the WikiLeaks publications as either forgeries or attempts by Russia to influence US elections by backing Trump. Stone has rejected both claims. “I bet there is no evidence of a Russian conspiracy to fix the election,” he told the Herald. “He’s not a Russian agent,” Stone added, speaking of Assange.

Family of disabled girl takes service dog case to Supreme Court By Desert Star Staff If a public school district refuses to allow a student’s trained service dog in school, can the student sue in federal court? That’s the question facing the Supreme Court in a case concerning a Michigan girl with cerebral palsy. On Monday, the Supreme Court will consider the question brought about by a lawsuit against a school district in Napoleon, Michigan. Stacy and Brent Fry, parents of Ehlena Fry, a girl with cerebral palsy, sued the district in federal court after the district refused to allow Ehlena’s service dog, Wonder, to assist her throughout the school day with tasks ranging from opening and closing doors to stabilization when she transferred from her walker to a seat. The Frys bought Wonder in 2009, when Ehlena, now a middle schooler, was five years old, according to reports. The school district says it followed legal guidelines set forth in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act by providing an aide to help Ehlena at school, thus rendering the dog unnecessary. Furthermore, after a 30day trial run with the dog in Ehlena’s school, the district

said the hypoallergenic Goldendoodle could bother students and teachers allergic to dogs, and that one student had recently been attacked by another dog and was afraid. Wonder was not allowed back in the school. The Frys argued that Wonder helped their daughter perform functions in a way that helped her take on more responsibility over time, becoming more independent in the process. “One of our whole goals in getting Wonder for her was that eventually, the more she was able to use Wonder and navigate her environment, that she would need the aide less and less,” Stacy Fry told NPR. The Frys eventually transferred Ehlena to a new school district where Wonder was “enthusiastically welcomed,” the suit says. But, in December 2012, the Frys sued the Napoleon school district in federal district court, claiming the district violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. They are seeking monetary damages for their daughter’s emotional distress in the process of changing schools. Stacy Fry told NPR that, more important than the money, the case is about helping meet the needs of

students with service animals “so that they don’t have to have what happened to my daughter happen to their child.” Yet the school district says that such a challenge to a district’s education policies should go through a state’s administrative appeals process before a federal court is involved. The district, backed by the National School Boards Association, argues that to allow such lawsuits to go forward before administrative appeals could cost school districts millions of dollars. The Frys, backed by the

American Civil Liberties Union, say that qualified service animals should be allowed for disabled children at schools, and that such challenges to school district policies should be heard in federal courts. They believe that they are only required to go through a remedial administrative process if they are asking for relief through an Individuals with Disabilities Education Act administrative proceeding, which the Frys argue they are not. They are not accusing the district of violating that law at all, but that the issue was their

daughter’s independence at school, which is guaranteed by the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to ScotusBlog. The family has lost in lower courts, appealing all the way to the Supreme Court. To win their lawsuit, the Frys believe they must show their daughter “was denied the right, guaranteed to any person with a disability, to be accompanied by her service dog in a public facility.” Following Monday’s oral arguments, a decision in the case is expected next year.

That’s not to say they’re ranked 8th in the newly developed playoff ranking system, but the top 16 of the 19 teams in Division 4 will get the nod for the postseason, so the likelihood the Indians are in

that bunch is pretty good. But in reality, it’s a waiting game for them. They’ll have to wait for the results of Week 10 to see if they’re in the playoffs and who their opponent is. Coachella Valley 30, 29 Palms 47: Tough night for the Arabs. A win meant they could be in contention for at least a share of the league title, but the Wildcats owned the night. Despite 2 rushing scores from Romeo Martinez and another score from Armando Deniz, the Arabs fell. But they still have a solid chance to make the playoffs with a big win over Desert Mirage next week. Meanwhile, 29 Palms is at Yucca Valley. Yucca Valley 13, DHSHS 6: The Golden Eagles defense held the Trojans offense as best it could, but their offense couldn’t get rolling and DHSHS’s only score on the night came from Julian Montes’s pick-6. California’s first female black judge dies at 96

By KMIR News Staff LOS ANGELES - The first female black judge in California and one of the longest-serving jurists in state history has died at the age of 96, her family said Monday. Vaino Spencer died of natural causes in her sleep at her Los Angeles home on Oct. 25, said her niece, Fatimah Gilliam. Spencer served 46 years on the bench. She was appointed to Los Angeles municipal court in 1961 and served on the Superior Court and state appeals court before retiring in 2007. Gilliam described her aunt as “a trailblazer and a self-made woman in an era when there were few opportunities for women and people of color.” In a statement, California Chief Justice Tani CantilSakauye said Spencer was “a double pioneer.” She was “a pioneer for women on the bench

and a pioneer for people of color on the bench in Los Angeles, statewide, and nationally,” Cantil-Sakauye said, adding that Spencer’s work laid the groundwork for women like her to even consider a career in law. “She leaves a legacy as a jurist in her opinions and as a role model in the person she was,” Cantil-Sakauye said. Spencer was voracious reader who kept up with national and world events and loved to talk politics, Gilliam said. She lived alone in Los Angeles up until her death and maintained a sharp wit through her senior years, Gilliam said. When Gilliam once asked her aunt, an elegant dresser, why she had stopped traveling, her aunt replied: “Dear girl, I stopped traveling when people stopped dressing for the plane.” Spencer founded the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles in

The quakes, which began at 2:43 a.m., were all relatively mild, but closely follow a swarm of around 200 quakes that struck the region in late September. “There have been some

Swarm of Small Earthquakes Rattles near the Salton Sea

earthquakes that we would consider swarm like, meaning they tend to be clustered in space and time, so those have been happening in the last day or two in sort of the southern end of the Salton Sea,” said Andrew Barbour of the United States Geological Survey. That swarm -- which included two magnitude-4.3 temblors -- led the California Office of Emergency Services to issue an earthquake advisory, warning of a slight increase in the possibility of a major earthquake (magnitude-7.0 or higher) to be triggered by the swarm. The California Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council said in September that the probability of a major quake occurring along the San Andreas Fault was increased by .03 to 1 percent due to the swarm. The majority of the latest quakes occurred within about an hour of each other, but two additional temblors were recorded by the USGS at 10:17 a.m. and 10:26 a.m., with magnitudes of 3.0 and 2.9, respectively. “For all intensive purposes this is sort of a common occurrence in this area, which is highly active from a tectonic perspective. So there’s the San Andreas fault to the north that transitions further south to the Imperial fault and in between that transition is sort of a complicated series of faults cut across the Imperial Valley,” said Barbour. The largest was a magnitude-3.5 recorded at 3:41 a.m. near Niland in Imperial County. Source KMIR

Defendants Ordered to Stand Trial in Pinyon Pines Triple Murders

By KMIR News Staff RIVERSIDE, Ca. -Update: A judge has ruled there’s sufficient evidence to go to trial for the two men accused of killing a woman, her boyfriend and her daughter in Pinyon Pines in 2006. Robert Lars Pape and Cristin Conrad Smith will be arraigned on November 15th. Testimony is slated to resume today in a hearing to determine whether there’s sufficient evidence to warrant a trial for two men accused of killing a woman, her boyfriend and her daughter in Pinyon Pines. Robert Lars Pape and Cristin Conrad Smith, both 28, are accused of the Sept. 17, 2006, deaths of 53-year-old Vicki Friedli, her boyfriend, 55-year-old Jon Hayward, and her 18-year-

old daughter, Becky Friedli. The defendants’ preliminary hearing began Monday at the Riverside Hall of Justice and at least four more witnesses are expected to testify. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office on Monday called the victims’ neighbor, Timothy Sumerlee, who recalled seeing their house engulfed in flames that September night and immediately running over to see whether he could do anything to help. ``I saw a head and torso,’’ Sumerlee testified. ``I told the (firefighters) that I had seen something that looked like a body in that wheelbarrow.’’ Sumerlee called the fire inside the victims’ house at 68550 Alpine Drive, just south of Palm Springs, ``robust’’ by

the time fire crews arrived. Sheriff’s Detective Ben Ramirez testified that Becky Friedli’s remains were in the wheelbarrow, about 70 feet north of the house. An autopsy listed her cause of death as ``homicidal violence,’’ but nothing more specific. Ramirez said Vicki Friedli’s charred body was located in the laundry room. She had been shot once in the head. Hayward was found in the kitchen, with a shotgun blast to the chest, according to the prosecution. ``There were two gas cans in the garage,’’ Ramirez said. ``We found match sticks and lighter fluid on the north side of the house.’’ Pape, of Cathedral City, and Smith, of Olympia, Washington, are each charged

with three counts of firstdegree murder, with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. The pair were previously charged with the killings, but after problems arose during grand jury proceedings in 2014, the District Attorney’s Office temporarily shelved the case. The defendants were re- arrested last June. New evidence emerged following an exhaustive 16-month investigation, which included a cell tower analysis that placed Pape and Smith in Pinyon Pines at the time of the killings; according to an arrest warrant declaration by sheriff’s Investigator Lester Harvey. The affidavit cited phone calls between Pape and his girlfriend, Sara Honiker, regarding an unregistered gun and a statement from an anonymous informant indicating Smith’s alleged admission to igniting a fire at the victims’ home. Pape and Smith told investigators they were in Cathedral City when the trio were killed, but analysis of cell phone records showed that the pair were on Monterrey Avenue, heading toward Pinyon Pines, according to the affidavit. Investigators played back recorded jail phone calls, eventually finding two allegedly incriminating conversations between Pape and his girlfriend. According to Harvey, Pape discussed two guns registered under Honiker’s name, as

well as a handgun that would ``never be registered.’’ Investigators determined that a Glock model 22 .40-caliber pistol was among weapons potentially used in the killings. In 2011, an anonymous source contacted investigators and alleged that in 2007, he or she overheard Smith discussing the fire and was admonished by Pape to shut up. Harvey said detectives identified and located the informant in May 2016, and that the person told investigators that Smith, a former U.S. Army ranger, once said that ``You don’t need to be in the military to kill someone.’’ Firefighters were called to the Pinyon Pines property shortly before 10 p.m. after receiving reports of a structure fire, at which point they discovered the victims. Photographs introduced during the preliminary hearing showed Becky Friedli’s legs dangling out of the wheelbarrow, while the upper half of her body was burned beyond recognition. Pape had been in a relationship with the young woman at one time. The defendant, who’s being held without bail at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside, could face the death penalty if convicted. Smith, who’s being held without bail at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta, was a juvenile at the time and would face life in prison without the possibility of parole if found guilty.
