Apocalypse? There’s a galaxy hurtling towards our Milky Way that could wipe out life on Earth By Desert Star Staff A nearby galaxy is set to slam into the Milky Way and the “catastrophic event” could knock our solar system into disarray, according to startling scientific calculations. Astrophysicists at Durham
University conducted a computer simulation to find out more about the movement of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a satellite galaxy that orbits the Milky Way. What they found was astonishing. It turns out that

Report: Americans Burdened by Skyrocketing Cost of Rent By Desert Star Staff Nearly half of all renter households nationwide are now spending more than 30% of their income on rent, according to a new report by the online service Apartment List. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, spending more than 30% of your income on housing means you’re cost burdened. Chris Salviati, a housing economist at Apartment List, says this is the first time renter cost burden has increased since 2014. “This jump that we have seen over the past year, I think, does really speak to the worsening of the housing affordability issue,” he states. “If you’re following the 2020 primaries, virtually all of the Democratic candidates now have plans that they have released to address the housing affordability crisis.”
Salviati points to cities such as Boston, with lots of good, high paying jobs, but lacking the housing infrastructure needed to keep up with demand. He says cities across the country are experiencing similar growing pains. There’s also the issue of home ownership. Salivati notes it’s becoming increasingly difficult for people in their 20s and 30s to purchase their first home, and that’s having a ripple effect on renting costs. “There has been a severe lack of new construction, particularly for starter homes, and so millennials, and folks who are reaching an age and point in their careers where maybe previously they would have been purchasing homes, a lot are continuing to rent,” he explains. “And so that does add this tightness to the rental market, which drives up prices.”
The number of cost-burdened renter households jumped by nearly 300,000 between 2017 and 2018, according to a new report from Apartment List. In Massachusetts, renters are shelling out 34.1% of their income on housing. Salviati says that should be an eye opener when
considering where to live. “Which, again, is well above that 30% threshold,” he points out. The report also found
that nationwide, the cost of median rent grew faster than renter income for the first time in nearly a decade.
Climate change denial is the new ‘flat Earth’ & causes WILDFIRES
By Desert Star Staff Add California’s wildfires to the list of problems caused by US President Donald Trump. The state’s former governor has warned Trump and his fellow Republicans that “the blood is on your soul” ... for
denying climate change. “California’s burning while the deniers make a joke out of the standards that protect us all. The blood is on your soul here and I hope you wake up,” former governor Jerry Brown snarled,
during a House Oversight Committee hearing on the Trump administration’s recent decision to bar California from setting its own auto emissions standards. “This is not politics, this is life, this is morality… this is real,” he continued.
Climate change is real, it’s happening, and you and everyone else will recognize that. Brown likened Trump and his fellow climate change skeptics to believers in “flat Earth,” claiming climate change is directly responsible for the wildfires currently engulfing swathes of California. While at least two of this year’s fires are actually believed to have been caused by malfunctioning PG&E power lines - like last year’s devastating Camp Fire, which wiped out an entire town - Brown has glossed over the notoriously mismanaged utility to pin the blame on hotter, drier weather. The only solution? “Limiting our carbon pollution,” he told reporters in 2015, defying climate scientists who suggested that that year’s fires were not caused by anything of the sort. The House called Brown and other “experts” to testify against the White
House’s decision to quash the waiver that had allowed California to set its own vehicle emissions standards and effectively control the whole country’s auto industry. Car companies can hardly afford to manufacture two separate versions of the same vehicle, and California has more drivers than any other state, so they can’t ignore the stricter emissions rules either. Democrats, including current California governor Gavin Newsom, have slammed the move as “reckless and politically motivated,” a symbol of Big Oil’s iron grip on the Environmental Protection Agency and other regulators. The White House, however, has claimed that stricter emissions standards make vehicles more expensive, meaning fewer people will drive these energy-efficient cars. The rule change is due to take effect next month.
Law Enforcement Predicts Growing Black Market For Vaping
By Desert Star Staff States across the country, including Minnesota, are investigating a rise in vapingrelated illnesses and deaths. In some states, public health officials have even declared an emergency. In addition to efforts by the medical community, law enforcement agencies are tracking down operations that sell illegal vaping products. Tim Fournier is the police chief in New Hope, a Twin Cities suburb. He said there are still a lot of

unknowns, but agencies are beginning to connect the dots. Officers from his department recently worked with a task force that netted more than 76,000 vaping cartridges containing THC, a chemical found in marijuana. “What we busted up were the most popular brand of illegal and undergroundproduced cartridge, where it doesn’t have the regulation attached to manufacturing,” Fournier said. A similar bust was recently reported by
Wisconsin authorities. That operation was described by investigators as one of the biggest illegal vaping rings in the country. Public health officials are trying to differentiate between potential causes of illness from legal vaping products and those illegally laced with THC. The Minnesota Department of Health has seen three deaths and more than 80 cases of vapingrelated lung injury, and is reviewing 39 others. Fournier said until more information is November 1, 2019
collected and policymakers enact more regulations, police will continue to track down tips and educate the public about the potential dangers of vaping, particularly off-market products. “What we can do in the meantime, what we have been doing, is working with our local schools, working with our local youth. The resources are more educational at this point, I think, than an enforcement capacity,” he said. Fournier added even
if more regulations are in place, black markets can still thrive. For example, he said in states where marijuana has been legalized, there’s added cost for the product sold in dispensaries - which can make underground markets more attractive to buyers looking for cheaper products. He said a similar scene could develop for vaping products containing dangerous chemicals.

Warren to UNH: Medicare for All Plan Coming Soon
By Desert Star Staff DURHAM, N.H. – Democratic Party presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts visited the University of New Hampshire on Wednesday. She has been portrayed as having plans for many things, but not health care – yet. Warren, like Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, backs Medicare for All. It would be a single payer, governmentrun health insurance system. When asked how it would be financed, Warren promised an answer is coming. “How much is it going to cost, and how are we going to pay for it?” she asked. “Something I’ve been working

And you can see it – you can see all of the numbers.” The latest poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire with CNN has Warren and Sanders leading the state. Recent polling from her home state of Massachusetts shows that more voters support a “Medicare for All Who Want It” option, rather than a Medicare for All system. However, Warren suggests that Medicare for All wouldn’t be as costly as critics claim it would be and, she said, it would cost less for average Americans. “We know that Medicare for All is the least expensive way to get everyone covered,” she added. While many economists predict that premiums for individual plans may

Congress approves ‘impeachment’ resolution
By Desert Star Staff The US House of Representatives has approved a resolution authorizing the impeachment probe of President Donald Trump, despite Republican opposition arguing that the “Sovietstyle” bill lacks transparency and due process. The 232-196 vote ended up being almost entirely along party lines, with only two Democrats voting against and no Republicans voting for the resolution. The White House has reacted to the outcome with a statement saying that “with today’s vote, Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats have done nothing more than enshrine unacceptable violations of due process into House rules,” adding that the
“unhinged obsession with this illegitimate impeachment proceeding does not hurt President Trump; it hurts the American people.” Meanwhile, Trump branded the process “The Greatest Witch Hunt In American History!” in a tweet. The resolution puts House Intelligence Committee chair Adam Schiff (D-California) in charge of the impeachment proceedings, while limiting the access of Republican members of Congress and White House attorneys. t comes following criticism from the GOP that the inquiry launched by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) 37 days ago has not been properly authorized by a full House vote, breaking with precedent established by

the previous impeachment campaigns in US history. In speeches on the House floor on Thursday morning, Democrats and Republicans both invoked the Founding Fathers, the Constitution and the defense of duty and democracy. Democrats maintain that Trump abused his power, undermined US national security and the integrity of elections – citing a July phone call with the president of Ukraine. Trump and the Republicans have pointed out that none of these things are true, and that there was nothing untoward about the call. The White House has released a transcript of the call, which Schiff famously mischaracterized in a “parody” during a
committee hearing. The Democrat-led interrogations of the people involved in US-Ukraine relations have been kept secret, with bits and pieces being leaked to friendly media outlets. Republicans have called the process an attempt to overturn the 2016 election and influence the 2020 presidential vote, citing a prominent Democrat who said Trump must be impeached or else he will win re-election. No US president has ever been successfully impeached. Richard Nixon resigned before an impeachment vote. Unashamedly intolerant: Veganism promotes a religion of hate By Desert Star Staff You’ve probably heard of transphobia or xenophobia or islamophobia. Well, welcome to the latest invented fashionable phobia, vegaphobia! Vegaphobia refers to meat-eating purveyors of hate, who dislike and fear vegans. Veganism loves to present itself as a brave progressive doctrine fighting off hordes of uneducated, angry carnivores. In reality, it is the ideology of veganism which promotes a religion of hate. Veganism is unashamedly intolerant. anti-meat campaigners are not prepared to allow others to decide for themselves what they should eat. That is why activists upholding the ideology of veganism feel entitled to invade supermarkets and prevent people from gaining access to the meat counter. They are zealously intolerant towards people who choose to adopt a diet that is at variance with their ideology. Veganism has become an unpleasant and sanctimonious ideology that directs its energies towards imposing its lifestyle on society. This is an ideology that is not confined to the objective of eliminating the consumption of meat! Veganism is inextricably connected to a broader project of social engineering. It dislikes consumerism and looks down on people who enjoy driving their cars and taking their family on overseas holidays. The ideology of veganism has become increasingly expansive. It plays a vital role in the culture wars that dominate Western societies. That is why a Guardian essay, sympathetic to veganism, declares that the “consumption of meat is visibly aligned with a certain kind of conservative alpha-masculinity.” The association of masculinity with conservatism is a caricature close to the heart of advocates of identity politics. Add meat-eating to this mix, and it is only a matter of time before the sight of men eating their burgers becomes a symbol of a cultural crime. Veganism attempts to guilt-trip and ridicule meateaters. It has successfully encouraged fellow social justice propagandists to embrace its crusade. The use of the word ‘gammon’ has become part of their woke vocabulary. The term gammon is hurled at supposedly conservative middle-aged English nationalists who still possess the ‘disgusting’ taste for meat. From their standpoint, meat, eating is a marker for nationalism, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, and heteronormativity. Veganism embodies all the worst features of

identity politics. Identity politics regards criticism of its lifestyle as a threat to its very existence. Consequently, its response to criticism is to shut down discussion. That is why it is not surprising that last week, veganist activists attacked the BBC for failing to challenge the supposedly ‘fatuous propaganda’ putforward by food writer Joanna Blythman. Blythman’s sin was to claim that a vegan diet “cannot compare in nutrient density” to meat-based diets. If vegans zealots have their way soon, criticism of their lifestyle – vegaphobia – will be declared a hate crime. Let’s be clear. It is OK not to eat meat. People are entitled to adopt a vegan lifestyle. Everyone is allowed to live according
to their inclination. Still, no one has the right to impose their consumption preferences on others. Unfortunately, veganism has
become a censorious and coercive dogma that encourages its followers to impose their lifestyle on others. And that is not OK. By Professor Frank
Furedi, a sociologist, and author. His book How Fear Works: The Culture Of Fear In the 21st Century is published by Bloomsbury

‘Stuber’ A Lame Summer Comedy Now On DVD
After seeing “Stuber” I certainly wouldn’t want to be an Uber driver. I also wouldn’t want to know this action-comedy twice. While it received a 79 percent audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, most critics were definitely unimpressed. The film stars Kumail Nanjiani (“The Big Sick”) as an Uber driver who is trying very hard to get a five-star rating for his services and Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer in “Guardians of the Galaxy”) as Vic, an L.A. cop with an attitude. For Vic, the job comes first, even when it comes to his relationship with his artist daughter (Natalie Morales). As the film starts, we learn that she really wants dear old dad to attend a gallery showing of her work that evening. He promises he won’t forget. Still, when he gets a hot tip on the location of his partner’s killer, he instantly decides to pursue the murderous heroin dealer (martial artist Iko Uwais “The Raid Redemption” and “The
Raid 2”). However, Vic has a big problem. He has blurred vision and is scheduled for a Lasik operation. Since he can’t see straight, in more ways than one, he calls for an Uber driver who turns out to be the mild-mannered Stu. Their ride experiences lead the duo to a strip club for clues and also to a den of drug dealers where the murderer often hangs out. While Vic doesn’t find his suspect, he does discover that the junkies have been giving dope to their hapless dog. To his credit, Vic is an animal lover who rescues the dog and takes him to a local vet. This leads to a shoot out when the murderer shows up. Much to his horror, poor Stu is caught in the middle of the action. The ongoing chase leads to many violent twists and turns, and Stu worries he won’t live to see another day or get his desperately needed five-star review. He also fears he will miss his tentative date that night with Becca (Betty
Gilpin), a lady he yearns for who doesn’t reciprocate. Do they stand a chance for romance, provided he gets out alive in his electric car? “Stuber,” written by Tripper Clancy and directed by Michael Dowse (“Goon”) is rated R for violence and language throughout, some
sexual references and brief graphic nudity. Running time is 1 hour, 33 minutes. “Stuber” is now available on DVD.

Microloans Set KY Women on Paths to Financial Independence
By Desert Star Staff October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and one survivor in Fayette County recalls how a microloan helped her get back on her feet after leaving an abusive marriage. Twenty-six-year-old Stacy says she initially used Facebook to reach out to the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violencefor financial guidance. “I started a microloan because I had some debt that my ex-husband had ran up on me,” she relates. “The microloan helped pay off my credit card, that had all these charges on it from my marriage.” Stacy says the microloan opportunity set her on a path toward financial independence. She’s graduated from college, and is now working on a master’s degree. Last year, the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic
Violence provided emergency shelter and transitional housing to more than 4,000 survivors and their children, as well as other services to more than 20,000 survivors. Stacy points out that, unlike traditional lines of credit, microloans don’t include interest charges. In this case, participants pay a small, set amount for one year, and receive training on how to create a budget plan for making regular payments. “Not only did it help me pay off my credit card faster, it’s a whole other line of credit that, as I was making payments on it every month, was helping build my credit even more,” she explains. Stacy wants women across the state to know there are resources available through any of the Kentucky coalition’s 15 member programs. “Any of them will be able to help with the application process or give

Plan Aims to Fund Health Care Delivered Outside Doctor’s Office
The Dell Medical Center at UT-Austin will study an initiative to prove the value of non-medical care outside of traditional settings. (Flickr) By Desert Star Staff A new initiative seeks to improve a patient’s health without a visit to a doctor or a hospital. The Factor Health program at the University of Texas at Austin’s Dell Medical School, funded by a $2l6 million
grant from the Episcopal Health Foundation, aligns unconventional partners to identify, prove and pay for non-medical care outside of traditional settings. For example, the program might use a healthy meal delivery system to change
a diabetic’s diet to healthier food, lower his or her blood glucose levels, and have a health insurance plan pay for it. Elena Marks, president and CEO of the Episcopal Health Foundation, says her organization aims to improve outcomes while cutting costs
outside of a clinical setting. “So, our role is funding what is essentially an experiment backed up with a lot of data collection and evaluation with the hope that if it proves true it becomes incorporated into the health care financing system,” she explains. The program brings together an unusual group of players, including managed care payors such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield, social service providers such as Meals on Wheels, and grassroots youth development organizations such as Youth Rise Texas. Marks says the first two programs to be tested through the Dell school would be managing diabetes for older adults and addressing the mental health impacts of family separation on high school age youths. She says the goal is to prove the value of such programs to the people who pay the bills. “People have done all
sorts of things around diet and exercise to impact diabetes,” Marks points out. “What’s different about this is that we are trying to get it embedded in the health care delivery system so that it gets financed as part of health care.” Marks says the goal is to demonstrate that if non-medical interventions can bring results, then they are worth something to a health insurance company. “The main thing behind it really goes to the core of what Episcopal Health Foundation is trying to do and that is to change the conversation and the financing so that we actually are prioritizing health and not just health care,” she states. Marks says the foundation will study the data and outcomes of the first two programs over a one-year period and consider funding new programs after that. which have led many parents to drop their children from government programs. Joan Alker, executive director of the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, says the loss of coverage hurt Latino children the most, but several other groups also saw decreases in coverage. “White children also had a significant loss of coverage,” she points out. “Young
children, under age six – and that’s really troubling. “And we’re also seeing families who are just right above the poverty lines, with incomes around $30,000 a year, those working poor families losing coverage.” Nationwide, the rate of uninsured children went from 4.7% in 2016 to 5.2% in 2018 – leaving a total of 4 million American children uninsured. Mayra Alvarez, executive director of The Children’s Partnership in Los Angeles, says California should be doing better, considering the state increased premium subsidies and extended Medi-Cal to everyone younger than 26 regardless of immigration status. “California had taken multiple proactive steps to expand coverage,” she points out. “But we aren’t making
a dent in the number of uninsured kids in California, despite the fact that the economy has been strong.” The report says the number of uninsured children increased by 400,000 nationwide between 2016 and 2018. Living with Chronic Liver Disease? Be Aware of Hepatic Encephalopathy
By Desert Star Staff Approximately 30 million people in the U.S. have some form of liver disease, which occurs in people for many different reasons. Some common types and causes of liver disease include hepatitis, caused by viruses A, B, and C, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is caused by too much fat in the liver cells, and alcohol-related liver disease, caused by consuming too much alcohol. Having liver disease over a long period of time can result in cirrhosis, an advanced chronic liver disease, which then puts a patient at risk for hepatic encephalopathy (HE) – a serious complication of advanced liver disease. “Up to 80 percent of patients with cirrhosis can develop HE. This condition can have very debilitating effects on patients and takes a toll on caregivers, especially as the condition progresses,” says Dr. Howard Franklin, vice president of Medical Affairs and Strategy at Salix Pharmaceuticals. “However, many patients with liver disease, especially younger
patients, are not even aware they are at risk for developing HE, so early recognition of signs and symptoms is critical.” A Closer Look at HE In patients with advanced chronic liver disease, the liver is damaged so it cannot filter toxins out of the blood the way a healthy liver would. These toxins can then build up and travel through the body until they reach the brain. The buildup of these toxins in the brain can then lead to the symptoms of HE. Onset of HE can start slowly, and at first, people with the condition may not even be aware they have it. Family or friends may often be the first to notice someone with HE is acting differently. Symptoms of HE, which can encompass both mental and physical symptoms, may vary for each person and include: • Mental symptoms Forgetfulness, confusion, poor judgement, not knowing where you are or where you are going or personality changes • Physical symptoms Changes in sleep pattern,
tremors or shaking of hands or arms, slowed or sluggish movement, slurred speech and changes in breath odor In the most severe form of HE, people can become unconscious and enter a coma. These symptoms can have a significant impact on daily life, such as not being able to drive a car, not being able to work and not being able to care for oneself and
having to rely on a caregiver. Proper and early treatment and management of HE can help slow its progression before it gets worse. Treatment Options Talk to your doctor to learn more about HE and how to manage this condition. Lifestyle changes, such as changes in diet or eliminating certain medications, may also help. “Once diagnosed and
put on treatment, proper adherence to medication is critical,” says Dr. Franklin. If you or someone you know has chronic liver disease and begins to experience any symptoms of HE, it’s important to talk to your doctor right away. How to Stick to Your Workout Schedule During the Holiday Season
By Desert Star Staff There are plenty of temptations to skip a workout during the holiday season. Ironically, this is the time of year you may need the movement most. Here’s how you can stay focused on fitness throughout the holly jolly season. • Rise and Shine: Consider creating the habit of working out first thing in the morning. Not only will doing so clear your mind and set the tone for the day, but for many, it’s the best way to avoid excuses and ensure the workout happens at all. • Every Bit Counts: Don’t forget that every bit of movement counts -- even holiday shopping. This is an especially important lesson if you’re not a gym lover. In fact, one of the best ways to stay healthy is with walking. You can

even do it during your lunch break. With just 30 minutes of brisk walking added to your daily routine, you could burn about 150 more calories a day, according to the Mayo Clinic. • Track It: Wearable tech can help you stay accountable to your goals as well as motivate you to set new ones. Check out the latest additions to the new POWER TRAINER sports lineup of watches from G-SHOCK, which go beyond an athletic aesthetic to offer advanced functionality. Features include a Training Log 200 LAP Memory, Training Timer, Target Alarm and Double Super Illuminator LED light to guide you through late-night and early morning pre-dawn workouts. Both the men and women’s series come equipped with Bluetooth technology compatible through the G-SHOCK Connected app.
Employing new technology developed by Casio, the app displays a graph which breaks down daily steps taken in each of five metabolic equivalent (MET) levels from data based on the step count and walking pace, as well as displays the exact time of day the wearer’s calories were burned, making it useful for interval training. • Friends and Family: Tis the season to spend time with friends and family, and there’s no reason why you can’t extend that mentality when it comes to your fitness routine. Maximize workouts by combining it with quality time -- ask your spouse, sibling, best friend or anyone near and dear to your heart to join you at the gym or on a walk. There’s a lot to juggle during the busy holiday season, but with the right tools and mindset, it’s easier to prioritize fitness. StatePoint November 1, 2019
