may be opportunities within your portfolio for particularly efficient ways to give? It is time to review your strategies before the end of the year to take tax deductions for 2014. The types of assets which you hold now and in the future will help determine what form a charitable contribution you may take and when. 8. If you wish to give noncash or so-called complex assets, find out if the organization has the capacity to accept noncash assets. Not all organizations do. 9. Does the organization appreciate your donation? When making substantial contributions, it is important to feel that they are appreciated. Be aware that often charities have limited staff, budgets and resources and may require
time for extensive requests for information. 10. After a donation has been made, request a follow-up to the gift, a report on where the dollars went, and the efficacy of the gift. While your financial advisor can help make sure gifts are made wisely and in a tax-efficient manner, the bottom line is that with charitable dollars you should follow your heart. If a certain percentage is reached, will that invalidate our senior citizen status? Thanks, J.P., Menifee Dear J.P.: Associations can limit the percentage of homes which may be rented. Such limitations are best put into CC&Rs, because major restrictions on how members use the residences should be more permanent (and approved by membership vote). Rules can be amended by the board with 30 day notice at any time, so rules created by this year’s board could be completely changed by next year’s board – and that doesn’t help anyone. Dear P.L.: Your CC&Rs probably contain a general statement that homes in your association are to be used for “residential” purposes only. create a nuisance for the neighbors. This could bring disciplinary or other action by the association or legal action by any member. The board has many options in reining in such activities, but should start by talking to the offending owners, and explaining the importance of the community’s residential, non-profit, nature. Best, Kelly Dear Kelly: Our CC&R’s are in the process of being changed to limit rentals of condominiums to 45%. We are in our eighties and hope to sell soon and move to a place without stairs. The proposed CC&R’s will require owners who wish to rent their units to be on a waiting list, and new buyers would have to live in the unit at least one year before being put on that list. Currently, our complex has been getting sales to mostly investors. If we could only find a buyer who wanted to rent out the unit, what recourse, if any, would we have? J.F., San Diego
Dear J.F.: I assume your association is trying to preserve its FHA/ FNMA eligibility, so better loans are available for members. Real estate agents may have an opinion about whether that helps your ability to sell your condominium. If the membership approves the amendments, they would be enforceable, but not against you. Civil Code 4740 protects your future right to rent, because under this Section a rental cap applies only to future owners. If you discover that only investors want your condominium, ask a Realtor® if maybe renting it out yourself would be an option. Thanks, Kelly Kelly G. Scrooge Christmas Season for Retailers?
By Kevin Powell Scrooge Christmas Season for Retailers? The third quarter is just wrapping up its earnings reporting season and for the most part retailers looked okay. 75% posted better performance than what analysts were
expecting. However, looking at the 4th quarter 87% are not very optimistic and have not increased their guidance for what they expect their results to look like. This is surprising on the surface when you consider that consumer sentiment is at a sevenyear high. Consumer sentiment
By Desert Star Staff Many new jobs in local towns nationwide are coming from a somewhat unexpected place, according to new statistics. Local jobs nationwide are increasingly tied to consumers and businesses abroad, say researchers. These days, international trade supports more than one in five American jobs -- 38.1 million across the country -- according to research from Business Roundtable, an association of chief executive officers of major U.S. companies. Increasing evidence points to the importance of international trade to the American economy and to local businesses and communities, as the share of U.S. jobs tied to trade more than doubled from 1992 to 2011. These jobs span a range of industries from technology and agriculture across 50 states. And recent free trade agreements have led to rapid U.S. export growth to partner countries, according to Business Roundtable. America’s free trade partners purchased $733 billion in U.S. goods in 2013 -- 12.6 times more per capita than nonpartner countries purchased. What it all boils down to, say experts, is that countries that trade with the U.S. buy more American products. And increased trade drives foreign companies to create more jobs in the U.S., by locating research
facilities, laboratories and plants throughout the country. “American innovation and global competitiveness depend on our ability to trade with the rest of the world,” said Peter Cleveland, vice president of Global Public Policy at Intel Corporation. “More than threequarters of Intel’s revenue comes from sales outside the U.S., while roughly three-quarters of Intel’s advanced microprocessor manufacturing and R&D is done here in the U.S.” Given these trends, Congress is currently considering new legislation that could help foster new trade agreements and potentially drive future growth, as well. America’s Chief Trade Negotiator, Ambassador Michael Froman, expressed support for the effort in his testimony on the 2014 Trade Agenda, “Done right, trade policy creates opportunities for American workers, farmers and ranchers; manufacturers and service providers; innovators, creators, investors and businesses -- large and small.” However, not everyone is sold on the pending trade agreements. Some labor groups have expressed concern over the impact of increased international competition on domestic job creation, trade deficit reduction and the government’s ability to prevent currency manipulation.
measures how most of us are feeling about our pocketbooks and what the future looks like from our point of view. Gasoline is below $3 a gallon for the bulk of the US. (Not quite there yet for California) That should give all of us a little extra change to do more buying. Many consumer
discretionary companies have historically been conservative when providing forecasts but for there to be not one upgrade in outlook is concerning. This could be bad news if you own stocks in many retailing stocks. However, this could be really good news for consumers. If retailers are expecting slower sales that means more sales and deeper price discounts are just around the corner. Black Friday sales should be really big this year because of retailer’s concerns. In fact the biggest deals may not come on Black Friday. Sure there will be the huge discounts for some consumer items but those are so limited that the vast majority of us will never be able to take advantage of them. But if the Christmas shopping season starts off slowly this weekend, keep a keen eye out for even bigger savings opportunities online or through circulars in your local newspapers. Things that may keep consumer spending down this year are record levels of personal debt being carried by the average American. Auto and college debt are the most concerning areas. Wages have been stagnant for more than a decade and that leaves most of us with less
discretionary income no matter how much the price of gas falls. Even though the unemployment rate is now under 6%, the participation rate (Americans who can work but aren’t for whatever reason) is still alarmingly low. Even though more of us are working, many of the jobs we’re finding are towards the lower end of the pay scale. On a personal note, many thanks for all the e-mails and feedback this year. It’s awesome to hear what you think about the content and recommendations. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, try to take some time to reflect on what you are truly thankful for. Even though there are many things all of us can fret over, worrying never solved anything. I am in Kentucky and get to spend the holiday with my parents and family here. It’s an important reminder to me that the most important things in my life have nothing to do with money. Family, health and relationships far outpace those other things. BIGHORN Golf Club Charities Grants Nearly $400,000
By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, CA.- On Thursday, November 13, 2014, BIGHORN Golf Club Charities (BGCC) awarded 38 qualified non-profits in the Palm Springs and Coachella Valley area nearly $400,000. BGCC developed the BIGHORN Cares program to fund specific projects by local non-profit organizations that demonstrate a need and are remarkably improving the quality of life for the people they serve. “The Coachella Valley is home to many non-profits that do truly incredible work,” share’s BIGHORN Cares Chairman Joe Kirby. “Our mission is to seek out the most significant projects that are going to benefit the most people and make a real difference in our community.” The focus of the program centers around non-profits that provide assistance for people who require a helping hand in order to seek a better life and a brighter future for
themselves, their families, and their communities. Over 120 valleys non-profits applied for the BIGHORN care program, all with impressive programs and community-enriching services. Grateful grant recipients at the recent awards dinner professed that the much-needed funds will help them to reach landmark goals, buy critical supplies, repair buildings and equipment, maintain programs and begin new initiatives that will ensure the best possible outcomes for our Valley’s most underserved populations. From their plans for educational outreach, after school programs, foster care and AIDS assistance to cancer care services, health screenings, maternity care, help for disabled children, and military programs, the stories are tremendously touching, the needs vast, and the results will prove to be miraculous! “It was amazing to be a
part of so many organizations that were tremendously blessed by BIGHORN Cares,” praises Chuck Delong, Father’s Heart Ranch. “In my 20-plus years
in the non-profit world, the BIGHORN Cares dinner was the first time I have seen a standing ovation at the closing of the event to honor the hosting
organization’s efforts. It was an honor to be a part of that and to stand and applaud your efforts in giving to our youth and our community.”

By Desert Star Staff United States Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is stepping down from his post atop the Pentagon, the Obamaappointee said Monday from the White House. Flanked by US President Barack Obama and the vice president during a Monday mor ning announcement, Hagel, 68, acknowledged that he submitted his resignation, confirming reports that started to circulate earlier that day in the press. Hagel, whose resignation was accepted by the president, called leading the Department of
Defense “the greatest privilege of my life.” He took office as defense secretary in February 2013 and previously spent more than a decade in the US Senate. Due to his previous opposition to the 2007 surge policy in Iraq and statements critical of the Israeli lobby in the US, his confirmation was met with significant controversy. Following Monday’s announcement, Hagel will have served just longer than the 20 months his predecessor Leon Panetta held the position. “For nearly two years, Chuck has been an exemplary defense secretary, providing a steady hand as we modernize
our strategy and budget to meet long-term threats while still responding to immediate challenges like ISIL and Ebola,” Pres. Obama said Monday. “Thanks to Chuck, our military is on a firmer footing engaged in these missions and looking ahead to the future.” Hours before the Monday presser, the New York Times reported that the outgoing Defense chief was stepping down under pressure following the massive mid-term losses suffered by the Democrats this month and the national-security team’s inability to keep ahead of a series of global crises, citing senior White House officials. CNN also reported that Hagel has clashed with the White House recently over alleged “micro management” issues within the administration. A senior defense official told the Associated Press that both Hagel and Obama had “determined that it was time for new leadership in the Pentagon” following weeks of discussion. From the White House this week, the president said, “it was an appropriate time” for Hagel
to step down, having guided the Dept. of Defense through a transition during the last 21 months that shifted focus towards fresh emerging threats in the wake of the Iraq War. With a military background and fewer hawkish view of international affairs, Hagel was viewed as the ideal candidate to bring major US combat operations in Afghanistan to an end while managing a leaner Pentagon amidst deep defense cuts. Recent events, however, including the rise of so-called Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, or ISIL, and the worldwide Ebola epidemic, “required a different kind of focus,” senior officials told the New York Times. With the White House ramping up its military operations in Iraq and Syria, one longtime associate of Hagel told ABC news the writing was on the wall. “He took the job to end the war—not start another one,” this associate of Hagel said. Hagel’s departure could both signal the White House
is ready to carry out a more aggressive foreign policy, while also signaling to analysts whom the Obama administration is receptive to critique of its perceived mishandling of recent events. It remains unclear who is slated to replace the outgoing defense chief. According to the NYT, Michele Flournoy, the former under secretary of defense; Senator Jack Reed, Democrat of Rhode Island and a past officer with the Army’s 82nd Airborne; and Ashton B. Carter, a previous deputy secretary of defense, are all likely candidates. A senior administration told ABC news that a successor “will be named in short order.” Meanwhile, Hagel said he will stay in his current role until a replacement can be confirmed by the Senate. Hagel’s predecessors, Defense Specs. Robert Gates and Leon Panetta, both published memoirs shortly after exiting the Obama administration in which they criticized the president’s leadership over the military. However.

Wish granted: Same day Delivery for the Holidays By MAE ANDERSON AP Technology Writer NEW YORK (AP) - A procrastinator’s holiday wish come true: Presents ordered at the last minute can now show up under the Christmas tree that same day. Amazon, Target and Macy’s and other retailers are offering speedier delivery, including overnight and same-day options that will continue even past the holidays. The focus on faster shipping is one way retailers are catering to shoppers who’ve become increasingly finicky and impatient. Since the recession, it’s not enough to get lower prices; they want the deepest discounts. And when it comes to ordering online, orders need to be shipped fast. “I’ll pay extra to get something right away,” says Wendy Connors, a 47-year-old mother of three who lives in Menlo Park, California. Quick delivery is important for retailers as they head into the winter holiday shopping season, a time when they can make up to 40 percent of their annual sales. U.S. shoppers are expected to spend $61 billion online in November and December, according to research firm comScore. Retailers can’t afford a repeat last year when UPS and FedEx failed to deliver some packages by Christmas due to a combination of poor weather and overloaded systems, causing angry customers. Neither of the top two deliverers said how many packages were delayed, but noted it was a small share of overall holiday shipments.
Forrester Research analyst Sucharita Mulpuru fears that the industry could be ill-prepared for the influx of online ordering again this year. She points out that the growth UPS and FedEx are forecasting this season is below growth estimates for online spending by the retail industry. UPS forecasts it will deliver 585 million packages in December, an 11 percent increase over 2013, and FedEx expects to deliver 290 million packages, an 8.8 percent increase from last year. But research firm ComScore expects online spending will grow 16 percent to $61 billion. It’s not a direct apples-toapples comparison, Mulpuru concedes, but the difference in estimated percentage growth could spell trouble for shippers and retailers this holiday. “I don’t know if there’s enough bandwith ... to accommodate full demand,” she says. Retailers are hoping that speedier delivery options will help spread out shipments throughout the season so that there’s not a big crunch toward the end like there was last year. Amazon expanded its Sunday delivery service, adding more than 10 distribution centers and 15 smaller sorting centers that sort packages by ZIP code and transport them to U.S. Postal Service offices. It also expanded same-day delivery, available for $5.99 per order to members of its $99 annual Prime loyalty program, to more cities. In August it expanded from 4 to 12 cities on the East and West Coast. Other online retailers are

Google relaunched its Google Shopping service, which costs $10 a month for membership or $4.99 per order, offers sameday delivery from Costco, Toys R Us and other retailers in about 6 metro areas. And eBay has retooled its “eBay Now” sameday delivery service, introduced in 2012, from a stand-alone app to a method of payment available on its site within the eBay app and website. “Shoppers don’t shop by saying what do I want now,” says eBay’s head of local, Tom Allason. “They shop by saying what do I want, and then when and where can I get it.” Tech companies aren’t the only ones offering same-day delivery. Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s
and six mall chains partnered with tech company Deliv to offer the service in major markets. Deliv founder and CEO Daphne Carmeli says there’s been a boost in holiday demand already, but she declined to give figures. Same-day delivery is mainly available in big cities, but elsewhere retailers still are working to cut delivery times. In October, Target rolled out a program to ship items directly from 140 stores in 40 markets, covering most of the country. Shipping directly from a store speeds up delivery because stores are often closer to customer’s homes than a warehouse. Target spokesman Eddie Baeb says that cuts shipping in half, from an average
of 4 days to 2 days. Toys R Us, Nordstrom and other retailers also have begun using their stores as mini warehouses to ship items directly to shoppers. Best Buy, which shipped items from 400 stores last holiday season, said it will ship from all 1,400 stores this time. It also is giving customers precise delivery information: During the checkout process, Best Buy will give precise get-it-by delivery dates on about 60 percent of products, compared with previously when it would just let shoppers know delivery times within five to eight days. Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly says the shipping process has been an “intense area of focus.” Source: KMIR

National Weather Service has issued potential flood warnings, saying that with temperatures across the affected area expected to stay above the melting level until Monday, at least minor floods are “imminent.” The state had prepared in case of widespread flooding; New York Governor Andrew Cuomo reassured the public, saying that hundreds of pumps

Government offices and schools, however, are expected to be open on Monday, Cuomo said. “We are sending teams of structural engineers in order to inspect any school that might have the potential of a constructional problem,” he said. “We hope to get back to business on Monday.”
Seasonal Jobs Help Workers Find Permanent Positions
By Desert Star Staff The holiday season helps put millions of people to work in jobs that may begin as temporary employment, but often turn into permanent employment, a c c o rd i n g t o E x p re s s Employment Professionals, which having employed nearly 400,000 people in 2013, is the largest franchised staffing company and second largest privately held staffing company in the United States. Last year, online superstores hired thousands of temporary workers to meet the demand www.desertstarweekly.com
of the millions of shoppers who visited Internet storefronts for their holiday purchases. Express Employment Services expects the 2014 holiday season will be no different. Many retirees, teens, stay-at-home moms and others find seasonal temporary employment ideal. Additionally, employed people often take on temporary seasonal work as a second job to earn extra holiday cash. But temporary holiday employment is only part of the story. While seasonal employment is nothing new,
what is unique about recent seasonal hiring is a growing trend of temporary holiday work becoming permanent. According to a recent study on seasonal employment by Express Employment Professionals, 39 percent of survey participants foresaw their desired seasonal work as being a potential avenue for a permanent position. Major companies agree that seasonal employment is a good entry point for permanent workers. As any shopper knows, the wallet doesn’t feel the holiday hangover until after the Christmas November 26, 2014
tree hits the curb. That’s when many Americans will find value in working seasonal jobs. “Employers will be looking at their temporary employees this holiday season to see which ones merit a full-time, permanent position. In many ways, a seasonal job is like an extended interview. So, if you have any interest in becoming a permanent worker, take advantage of your holiday job and show how hard-working and committed you really are,” says Bob Funk, CEO of Express Employment Professionals and former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Funk adds that while hours may vary for those hired through a staffing company, an Express associate works an average of 37 hours a week, with 60 percent of them hired for a full-time position following the initial assignment. “With over 19,000 open jobs available, the kinds of positions
we find vary considerably. In addition to our current holiday openings, we consistently are hiring for industrial, retail and fulfillment, office services, engineering, manufacturing, i n f o r m a t i o n t e c h n o l o g y, accounting, and sales-based positions,” Funk said. Through the years, the term “holiday temp jobs” has also changed. What used to mean a little extra cash at Christmas has turned into opportunities for workers to be hired in fall through New Year’s. For more information about seasonal work opportunities, visit ExpressPros.com. “There are many great ways to earn cash this year and possibly a permanent job. I encourage job seekers to take advantage of these opportunities,” Funk says. (StatePoint)

Palm Springs Art Museum In Palm Desert Swings Into Season By Pamela Price What a sensational night it was at the Third Annual Meet the Galen and the Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden in Palm Desert on Friday evening, from 6-8 pm on November 21st. America’s Swing Era also known as the “big-band band era,” around 1935-1946 brought new names to music from Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey. There were several at our table who mentioned songs where words spun stories, from “Stompin at the Savoy” to “Tuxedo Junction.” And there were quite a few classy gents in tuxedos As Helene Galen and Jamie Kabler greeted arriving guests, many attired in black and
white, the 1940’s swing music selected by DJ Alf Alpha filled the air. Thanks to Jamie Kabler and Susan Stein, Chairman, Art Angels Helene Galen, Donna MacMillan, Harold B. Matzner and Honorary Chairs Lucie Arnez, Larry Luckinbill, Suzanne Sommers and Barry Manilow it was an enchanting interlude under the stars, in step with style. That was evident when guest, John Saachi turned heads with his stunning Christian Louboutin shoes, sporting multi-colored spikes; those are the latest “roller-boat men’s flats,” remarked Grace Robbins, author that was accompanied by Gilbert Holmes and Patrick Mundt. At no time a dull moment

“The Hunchback Of Notre Dame” At La Jolla Playhouse
Ciara Renée (center) and the cast of La Jolla Playhouse’s U.S. premiere production of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, book by Peter Parnell, music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, directed by Scott Schwartz, running Oct 26 – Dec 14 in the Mandell Weiss Theatre; photo by Kevin Berne. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The La Jolla Playhouse, one of the country’s leading Tony Award Regional Theatres, is a recognized leader in the art of transferring its productions from La Jolla to Broadway, and they have a genuine, bona fide candidate with the Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz, Peter Parnell production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. The libretto by Parnell is based on the 1831 Victor Hugo epic novel (it seems he only wrote epic novels) should not be confused with the 1996 Disney animated movie. That movie was for the kiddies. This magnificent production now on stage at the Mandell Weiss Theatre, is for grownups. Under the inspired direction of Scott Schwartz (son of Stephen Schwartz) the production soars both literally and figuratively. The astonishing set design by Alexander Dodge is breathtaking
in its attention to detail in recreating a 30 foot-tall Notre Dame Cathedral for the actors to perform their magic, complete with gigantic bells and ringing ropes, choir stalls, and street scenes of 1482 Paris. When one walks into the Weiss auditorium it becomes immediately apparent that everyone is in for a very special evening of theatre. The story revolves around Quasimodo, the deformed hunchbacked Notre Dame Cathedral bell-ringer (Julian Decker the night I attended), the beautiful gypsy girl Esmerelda (Ciara Renee), the obsessively enthralled and conflicted Dom Claude Frollo, the archdeacon of Notre Dame Cathedral (a superb and mesmerizing Patrick Page), who falls under the spell of Esmeralda and the young handsome Captain of the Cathedral Guard, Phoebus de Martin (Andrew Samonsky) who also has fallen for the young gypsy beauty.
Victor Hugo’s poignant tale allows us to peer into the lives and the emotions of society’s outcasts during the Middle Ages: the poor, the disenfranchised, people of color; those with no hope or chance of escaping their destinies in their search of a better life in the Paris of 1482. The character of Clopin, King of the Gypsies, is symbolic and represents the “outcasts” Erik Liberman’s sly, wry, and inventive gypsy king portrayal shines in the lively “Topsy/Turvy” number in Act I, and in Act II with “The Court of Miracles” number. Hugo’s story of religious men in positions of power taking advantage of women have been the basis for many Hollywood films and plays over the last eighty-years From “Rain” (1932) with Joan Crawford as Sadie Thompson, to Rita Hayworth’s Miss Sadie Thompson” (1953), both playing alluring social outcasts to hypocritical religious men and pillars of society. In “Elmer Gantry” Shirley Jones won a Best Supporting Oscar playing a prostitute who brings down the slick talking tent revivalist/preacher Burt Lancaster, who also won the Best Lead Actor Oscar for his portrayal. The appeal of stories that feature men and women
grappling with their personal morality and the concepts of good and evil is a favorite subject matter for playwrights and screenwriters to this day. To date, that dynamic hasn’t been resolved but it sure does make for compelling theatre. The masterful staging and direction of Scott Schwartz, who combines new orchestrations for this production from Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz’s 1996 original score, is blessed not only with a solid cast of supporting players and ensemble performers, but benefits from the local San Diego area SACRA/ PROFANA choir whose singing and Gregorian chanting enriches all of the musical aspects of this impressive production. When the production opens inside the Cathedral, the company of players, singers and choir fill the Weiss Theatre with a glorious sound that shakes the building as a cast of twenty-five plus performers fill the stage in full throated song with “The Bells of Notre Dame” number. What a splendid way to introduce your cast to the audience. Leading the cast of principal performers is Julian Decker as Quasimodo. His strong tenor voice is all the more outstanding as it soars out of the deformed

body which he twists and turns in his portrayal of a deprived from birth individual who has lived his entire life inside the great cathedral; hidden from the outside world. One can feel his pain and his yearning, with his poignant rendition of “Out There”. Ciara Renee’s Esmeralda performance speaks volumes with her beautiful soprano rendition of “God Help the Outcasts”. As Lincoln once said, “God must dearly love poor people because he made so many of them”. The MiddleAges was not a compassionate time period to be alive if one was not part of the upper classes. Anchoring this splendid production is the performance of Patrick Page as Dom Claude Frollo. Page is widely recognized as one of America’s leading classic actors and is an Artist in Residence at San Diego’s Old Globe. His deep Bass-Baritone voice grabs the audience, and never lets go. His “Sanctuary” duet with Decker is haunting and spellbinding. The “Hellfire” number with Esmeralda and the congregation is spectacular with the burning of Esmeralda who has been declared a witch by Page. His conflicted archdeacon passes sentence on her while still secretly desiring her. The creative team led by Schwartz delivers a spectacular set design by the aforementioned Alexander Dodge, with mood inducing lighting by Howell Binkley, along with a powerful sound design by Gareth Owen. The costumes of Alejo Vietti provide the ring of authenticity for the period. Special mention goes to the Music Supervision/ Arranger Michael Kosarin, Music Director Brent-Alan Huffman, and Orchestrator Michael Starobin. All the technical elements are first rate. Under the Artistic Directorship of Chris Ashley, the playhouse is, once again, well positioned to send another of Ashley’s selections east to Broadway in search of yet another Tony win. “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” runs at the La Jolla Playhouse in the Mandell Weiss Theatre through December 14, 2014.

FILM

Disney’s ‘Big Hero 6’ and ‘How to Train Your Dragon II’
From the creators of “WreckIt Ralph” and the billion-dollar smash hit “Frozen” comes another animated adventure, Disney’s “Big Hero 6.” The story, based on a little-known comic from Marvel’s vaults, deals with five teens and a lovable, Rolypoly robot that looks like a cross between the Pillsbury Doughboy and a giant rubber snowman. His name is Baymax and he not only steals your heart, he steals the movie as well as he is transformed from a medical healer to a super hero dressed in red spandex.
www.desertstarweekly.com
Baymax is the invention of Tadashi Hamada (Daniel Henney) , the older brother of the 14-yearold whiz-kid Hiro (Ryan Potter). Hiro is a robotics genius who has already graduated with honors from high school. Unfortunately, he is squandering his talents on creating gaming robots for use in illegal back-alley robotic fights to the finish. His hobby earns him money, but it also has the potential to get him into plenty of trouble. To refocus his kid brother, Tadashi takes him to San Fransokyo Tech, a prestigious
university for technical geniuses. Hiro is intrigued by the possibilities of studying there, but to gain admission, he must first create something unusual and amazing in order to impress Professor Robert Callaghan (voiced by James Cromwell) and Hiro does. Things turn dark when Hiro’s robotic invention is stolen following a mysterious fire. Who is behind the theft which has tragic consequences? Hiro is joined by fellow students from the university in an intense search for the sinister masked thief. They are aided in their quest by the gentle giant Baymax, a robot whose primary function has been to diagnose illnesses and prescribe medications and health care information. Baymax is a quick study and proves truly useful as,

he and the young heroes look for answers. To say more would spoil the surprises and the plot twists and turns that follow. Like another Marvel super hero stories, there are plenty of fast actions and adventure, but this time out there is also the loveable Baymax, an endearing, strong, yet gentle robot that brings warmth and comedy to the tale. Screenwriters Robert L. Baird, Daniel Gerson and Jordan Roberts have embellished the original comic book story and directors Don Hall and Chris Williams have joined forces to create an adventure that will propel the viewer into a future world that is a blend of Tokyo and San Francisco. The music is from the Fall Out Boy Band’s new track “Immortals” which is blended with composer Henry Jackman’s orchestral score to create a pop music background for the film. Rated PG for action and peril, some rude humor and thematic elements. “Big Hero 6” is playing city wide and at the El Capitan Theatre, 6838 Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood. What is special about seeing the movie at the El Capitan is the added extras. The El Capitan presents Baymax, the lovable robot, live on stage plus an exhilarating “Laser Light Show” before every 3-D presentation of the movie. The colorful light extravaganza will put you in the proper mood for this Marvel Comics inspired adventure set in the not too distant future. Bring your camera or iPad because you and the kids can take a photo with Baymax in the lobby. The theatre’s Disney store and Soda Fountain has plenty of toys and figures from the film on sale. Another plus is getting a free sample of Ghirardelli chocolate as
you enter the soda fountain area. For tickets call 1-800-DISNEY6 or visit www.elcapitantickets.com.

Fans of the Oscar nominated animated adventure “How To Train Your Dragon” won’t want to miss the next chapter in this epic trilogy. In the second part of the story, “How to Train Your Dragon II,” now available on Bluray + DVD + Digital HD, Hiccup, the Viking and his amazing black dragon, Toothless discover a secret ice cave inhabited by countless varieties of dragons and a mysterious Dragon Rider. Soon these two friends find themselves in an epic battle to save the future of man and dragons from an evil force determined to control the dragon population. In the first installment we learned how Hiccup befriended Toothless. Their eventual bonding, which leads to an enduring friendship, was extremely touching. Then Hiccup had to convince his father that a dragon can be a friend and companion, not a force of evil and dread. In this second story of the trilogy Hiccup, Toothless and the other young Vikings must band together to keep an evil force from destroying the bond between man and dragon. Part II is filled with plenty of action and countless varieties of dragons who come in all shapes, colors and sizes. From DreamWorks, rated PG for adventure action and some mild rude humor. The Blu-ray comes with many bonus features that include: an all-new adventure entitled “Dawn of the Dragon Racers,” deleted scenes, commentary, “Where No One Goes: The Making of How to Train Your Dragon II” and much, much more.

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Gaby, as she likes to be called, has a varied work and personal background that had helped her find her way
through this newly created position. “I started as a Volunteer Receptionist, at The Center,” says Gaby. “I liked being there so much that I approached James Martinez, the Executive Director, about a full-time position. I wanted to cause a change in my community and help all those I saw coming over every day. Plus, I knew there were hundreds more out there who couldn’t get to the Center who still needed help with
everyday life issues.” “I asked myself, what should I do first and how can I make the outreach program at The Cathedral Center expand and grow?” She continues Gaby. “Then I thought of the outreach programs that I had come across during my own financial hardships. I did some more research on other programs available. It was overwhelming how many programs I found.
The majority of people don’t apply for these programs because they don’t know about them. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment knowing that I can assist and help in the application and follow through a process.” “I look forward to helping in the expansion of our Outreach program, and I’m excited to see people coming back to The Center satisfied by
the results,” notes Gaby. Gabriela attended Coachella Valley High School. S P O RT S Hawkins and Miller Shine for Indians in CIF Quarterfinals BY DANIEL MARINELLI
Israel Gumero (23) hyping his team up with a post-game speech. (Photo By Dan Marinelli)
HESPERIA – If you have paid attention to high school football in the Coachella Valley this season you know the Palm Springs Indians are loaded with talented athletes. One night it could be quarterback Will Olvera leading the team to victory, another night it could be two-way (offense and defense) receiver Riley Hagar catching the game-winning touchdowns – and throwing them. On the road in frigid Hesperia last Friday night – with the CIF-SS Eastern Division semi-finals on the line – offensive centerpieces Franklin Miller and Taylor Hawkins lifted the Indians with their bigtime play making ability. After forcing the Hesperia Scorpions (6-6 overall, 3-2 Mojave River) to punt on the game’s opening possession, Miller received the kick at the Indians’ 45-yard line. Then slipped through, swerved and dodged defenders, sprinting 55 yards, all ending in an electrifying touchdown that set the tone for the rest of the game. The Scorpions were able to answer immediately to tie the game but the Indians, specifically
Hawkins, answered right back – twice! The future NCAA athlete found the end zone on a nineyard carry to put Palm Springs up to 14-7. Following a huge fourth-down stop, the elite, do-itall, receiver-corner back caught a highlight-reel, 60-yard bomb that put the visitors up to 21-7 before the first quarter had even ended. By this point, it was obvious, the Indians looked like, and were playing like the better team. If they kept their defensive intensity up, all that stood in the way between the DVL’s second seed, and the CIF semis was 36 minutes of game time. In the second quarter, Hesperia managed to score another touchdown to come within eight. Moving the ball with little resistance; however, minutes before the end of the first half, Miller caught his only pass of the game, a 13-yard strike that put the Indians back up 27-13. They were just up to 14 at the game’s midway point but with the Indians’ dominant play through the first two quarters, the latter half figured to be mostly clock management for Dan Murphy’s poised team. Palm Springs opened the
second half with possession and took a 17-point lead on a field goal early in the third quarter. The Scorpions did score another touchdown, and giving a slight scare to the away-team faithful, recovered the ensuing onside kick on the first play of the final 12 minutes. Despite giving away an extra possession on the onside kick, the Indians defense did not let Hesperia take advantage, coming up with another fourthdown stop, ending the last serious Scorpions threat. “The (defense) has been coming through for us all year – tonight was no different,” Coach Murphy said. “When we needed a stop, they did what they had to do. I’m extremely proud of them, always am.” The Indians played the type of unrelenting defense it takes to win a CIF championship, and the offense kept up its end of the bargain by scoring when the opportunities were presented. To put the nail in the coffin, Miller carried the ball nine yards for his third touchdown, putting the Indians up by a final of 37-20. With the win, Palm Springs moves on to the semifinals for the first time since 2012 – and the
first time under Coach Murphy. “Feels great, it’s a goal we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year, to make a deep run in the playoffs and were fortunate enough to do that,” Coach Murphy said. “The kids played well tonight. Hats off to Hesperia, they have some tough kids who put us in bad situations, but our kids prevailed and did what we wanted them to do.” Miller’s three scores put the junior at a remarkable 17 total touchdowns on the season. Including his two touchdowns, Hawkins finished the game with 79 yards receiving. Finishing with two passing touchdowns, Olvera ended the night with 148 passing yards. All season long, Palm Springs has used its dynamic passing offense to breeze through the season. Against the scorpions, it was all about the run. In addition to starting running back Israel Gumero, the Indians used Miller, Hawkins and even receiver Ray Mullen as running backs – and with two scores on the ground, it was definitely a difference maker.
Up next are the semifinals. The scorching Indians (11-2 overall, 5-1 DVL) take on the Oak Hills Bulldogs (10-2 overall, 5-0 Mojave River), the finest team in the Eastern Division Bracket, and one of the first teams in California. Palm Springs has been rolling but with a match up against the 51st best team in the state, some adjustments will have to be made “We have to fix up some defensive alignments and stuff like that, but the kids were really excited, and they performed well when crunch time came,” Coach Murphy said. “They did what they had to do, so we’ll work on some things, we’ll watch some film, and we’ll go from there. I think we’ll be fine.” A location for this Friday’s game is to be determined but will likely take place at Oak Hills High School in Hesperia. Game starts at 7 pm. British Farce Becomes Mark Taper Forum Revival
Rod McLachlan and Frances Barber in Joe Orton’s “What the Butler Saw” at the Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic If you’re old enough to remember the old “Carry On” series of British movie farces of the 1960’s and 70’s (more than 30 plus films) and the more recent nuttiness of the Monty Python TV shows, then you’re going to love the current production now on the boards of the Mark Taper Forum. “What the Butler Saw” written by English playwright and ‘infant terrible’ Joe Orton, is classic English farce performed with stiff upper lip by a cast of clueless characters that looked as if they just stepped out of a West End theatre production to find themselves on the stage of the Mark Taper Forum, bewildered as ever, but supremely confident in the correctness of their decisions. Orton was a star-crossed performer/playwright that enjoyed brief success on the British stage before an early and tragic death took him at age 34. For three years in the early 1960’s he penned 10 plays of varying quality. “Entertaining Mr. Sloane” and “Loot”, two of his earlier efforts were popular but his most successful play was “What the Butler Saw”. Directed by John Tillinger
with flair and style, the improbable story revolves around Dr. Prentice, a London psychiatrist played by Charles Shaughnessy who runs a private medical clinic during the 1960’s. Prentice has a penchant for seducing his pretty female patients. As the play opens, Prentice is interviewing perky and cute Geraldine Barclay (Sarah Manton) who has applied for the position of the doctor’s secretary. During the interview, Prentice convinces Geraldine that it’s perfectly proper for him to conduct a complete medical examination as well the employment interview, and asks her to undress. Just as he begins the faux medical exam, his wife Mrs. Prentice enters the room and he hastily covers up his activity telling Geraldine to hide behind the medical curtain. Mrs. Prentice (Frances Barber), however, has her own problems and is being blackmailed for her sexual indiscretion by Nicholas Beckett (Angus McEwan), and she offers the position of the clinic secretary to her husband, which ads further confusion, including Nicholas and Geraldine dressing as the opposite sex. Are you still with me to this point? Good. It’s a British farce, remember? But I digress.
Dr. Prentice’s clinic is then faced with a government inspection. The inspection is conducted by Doctor Rance (a delightfully clueless Paxton Whitehead), a product of the old boy, fuzzy-thinking network, who reveals that the chaos and odd situations going on in the clinic will make for interesting casestudy entries in his new book “The final chapters are coming together very nicely” he says, “incest, buggery, outrageous women, and strange love cults catering to depraved appetites” rubbing his hands together in gleeful anticipation of publishing day. In most British farces, the police constabulary is somehow always involved in the plot. It’s a staple of the genre becoming the comedy icing on top of the farce genre cake that’s offered to the audience. The convention allows one Sergeant Match (yes that’s his name) played with ferocious authenticity and commitment by Rod McLachlan to burst through the clinic’s door in search of suspects and clues to shenanigans going on at the clinic, whereby he immediately begins interrogating everyone in the room. The dialogue is delivered at warp speed, along with impeccably timed pauses
by this splendid ensemble cast of farceurs. It’s the stuff and silliness that made the Monty Python comedy group famous. One of the character traits I admire most in the English culture is their ability to laugh at themselves as a people. This manifests itself mainly in their comedies. Alas, we Americans on the other hand, never seem to understand parody, satire, or jokes about our country or our idiosyncrasies. Hey America, it’s really okay and even healthy to
poke our collective fingers into our culture’s eyes from time to time. The technical credits under the watchful eye of director Tillinger and his creative team: scenic designer James Noone, Costume designer Laurie Churba Kohn. Lighting designers Ken Billington and John McKernon, sound designer John Gromada are all first rate. “What the Butler Saw” runs at the Mark Taper Forum through December 21, 2014.
