‘California Gas Pandemic’ By Desert Star Staff California gas prices have hit a new record high, averaging $4.68 a gallon, as Americans continue to suffer the effects of inflation coupled with ongoing supply chain issues. Monday marked the second day in a row that
America’s most populated state broke its own record on gas prices, according to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA). On Sunday, gas prices were averaging $4.67, besting a previous record set in October 2002. The national average
for gas per gallon stands at $3.41 as of Monday – a figure continues to rise as Americans face the effects of inflation and supply chain issues in numerous industries. President Joe Biden has chalked up inflation issues to a rise in demand, as well as Covid-19 pandemic
disruptions. In a Sunday tweet, he claimed prices are too high for Americans and added without elaborating that the country is also in the middle of a “historic economic recovery.” Biden contended that his massive spending package, Build Back Better, will help
address inflation issues. Critics have pointed to the administration’s economic shutdowns and moves to limit drilling as factors driving the staggering prices Americans are paying at the pump, like a recent plan to reportedly Continues on Page 3
Americans advised avoiding two more EU countries
By Desert Star Staff The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended Americans not go to Germany and Denmark due to the rise in Covid-19 cases in both countries. The CDC added Germany and Denmark to countries with a ‘very high risk of contracting Covid-19. As a result, the travel advisory for both nations was elevated to Level 4, the highest threat level in the CDC’s four-tier assessment system. The agency advises Americans to ‘avoid travel’ to Level 4 countries or be fully vaccinated if they still decide to take the trip.
The State Department made the same recommendation, warning that “because of the current situation in Germany, even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading Covid-19 variants.” Germany has seen a rise in cases during the fourth wave of the pandemic, prompting some officials to recommend mandatory vaccination for the general public. Denmark has suffered from an upswing in cases as well. This month, the country introduced a digital ‘corona pass’ for people aged 15 and older.
Advocates Sue LA County over Emergency Food-Assistance Delays
By Suzanne Potter/PNS LOS ANGELES -- Antihunger advocates filed suit Monday to force Los Angeles
County to speed up the processing of applications for emergency food assistance. Those applications by
law must be processed within three days, but the county’s own data showed between October 2020 and September
2021, more than a third of applications took longer, affecting 54,000 households. Frank Tamborello, executive director of Hunger Action Los Angeles, said the CalFresh program is akin to emergency response. “When someone is hungry, every hour, every minute matters,” Tamborello argued. “It is unconscionable that in Los Angeles County, the most vulnerable families have to wait for weeks to get something as basic as food assistance.” The county did not respond to a request for comment by the deadline but has acknowledged a surge in demand combined with staffing issues is straining the system. Lena Silver, associate director of litigation and policy advocacy for Neighborhood
Legal Services of Los Angeles County, said to qualify for emergency food assistance, you have to earn less than $150 per month and have less than $100 in cash, or be unable to pay your rent or mortgage. “Emergency CalFresh is not a cushion,” Silver asserted. “It gives people money for food which are at imminent risk of, or already experiencing, hunger.” Los Angeles County’s 12-month average for applications processed past the deadline is 36%, much higher than other large counties in Southern California. For example, San Bernardino County misses the mark more than 11% of the time. Orange County is at 7%, and San Diego County is at 5%.
Health Advocates Work to Push Build Back Better Act Over Finish Line By Suzanne Potter/PNS According to groups fighting for better health care, SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Build Back Better Act, now headed to the U.S. Senate, would be a massive win for consumers. Forty-two members of California’s congressional delegation voted in support of the measure, which aims to keep premiums affordable for Covered California enrollees, lower the price of prescription drugs, cap prices on diabetes medication, and cap out-of-pocket expenses for older Americans on Medicare Part D. Rachel Linn Gish, director of communications for the group Health Access California, said it was a heavy lift and a big victory just to pass it out of the House. “There’s still time to speak
up in both thanking your congressional members,” Gish noted. “But also reaching out to your senators to make sure the bill gets out of the Senate as strong as possible.” The Build Back Better Act would also add a hearing benefit to Medicare, prevent considerable spikes in the cost of prescription drugs, and extend through 2024 subsidies helping millions of families get insured through Covered California. However, opponents say the price tag is too high. Gish contended Build Back Better is the most significant change in health policy since the Affordable Care Act. She noted one of the bill’s most important impacts healthwise is a provision allowing Medicare to start negotiating down the price of prescription drugs,
something currently forbidden. “Right now, prescription drug makers can charge whatever they want, whatever the market will bear,” Gish asserted. “Giving Medicare
the ability to go back and forth with drugmakers to lower those costs for their consumers is a huge step in the right direction.” If the Senate changes
the bill, it would still have to go back to the House for a concurrence vote before it lands on President Joe Biden’s desk.

on “inappropriately low” bail. Waukesha police have been reluctant to name the suspect in Sunday’s event, though local and national media outlets have identified him as Darrell Brooks. On Monday, District Attorney John Chisholm

Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office,” other than that, it was, literally, the approach of the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the case of Darrell Brooks, wasn’t it? — Ryan Drexel Rawson (@ drexrawson) November 22, 2021 Chisholm said the bail recommendation was “inappropriately low in light of the nature of recent changes and the pending charges” against Brooks and “not consistent with the approach of the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.” Chisholm’s statement came after critics pointed out that he has been an advocate of abolishing bail altogether in his jurisdiction and
outspoken in praise of other prosecutors who have done so in places like California. Brooks had been charged with bail jumping, as well as recklessly endangering safety, being a felon in possession of a firearm, battery, obstructing an officer, and disorderly conduct. The reckless endangerment charges stemmed from Brooks allegedly running over a woman after an argument, the Milwaukee JournalSentinel has reported. Brooks was arrested on Sunday after his red SUV was identified as the vehicle that sped through the crowd on Main Street during Waukesha’s Christmas parade, injuring dozens of people – including children. www.desertstarweekly.com

employee-paid coverage that supplements what your employer may already provide. Supplemental benefits are additional coverage beyond your health insurance you can choose and usually pay for through payroll deduction. Supplemental benefits allow you to customize your gifts package with the types of coverage most vital to you and your family. In addition, because you sign up for them at work, it’s usually more affordable than the coverage you could buy on your own. It’s also easier to qualify for coverage as part of a workplace group, often without answering any health questions. Consider these major types of supplemental benefits offered by providers like Unum and Colonial Life: * Life insurance is financial protection for your family should anything happen to you. It can help your loved ones pay living expenses, debts, medical bills and funeral costs, in addition to future needs such as college tuition or retirement. However, employerprovided life insurance may not be enough for your family’s long-term needs. * Disability insurance is designed to pay a portion of your income if you’re sick or injured and unable to work. * Dental insurance helps reduce out-of-pocket costs for most common dental procedures, like cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures,
Photo courtesy of Getty Images oral surgery, orthodontia and other treatments. * Vision insurance helps cover the costs of exams, glasses and contact lenses and may include access to discounted materials and services through a network of vision service providers. * Accident insurance offers a lump sum financial benefit that helps pay outof-pocket expenses such as doctor bills, co-pays or emergency room fees if you have an accident or injury. * Hospital insurance helps pay the costs of hospital stays and, on some plans, outpatient surgery and diagnostic procedures. * Critical illness insurance provides a lump sum
financial benefit when you’re diagnosed with a wide range of severe conditions, such as heart attack, stroke, cancer, organ failure, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS and more. * Cancer insurance provides more specific coverage for the oftenoverwhelming costs of treating cancer, from initial diagnosis through recovery. It can also help pay for various treatments and services, such as ambulance transportation, hospital confinement, radiation and chemotherapy, medications and surgery. Supplemental benefits can help bridge the financial gap between workplace medical insurance and out-of-pocket costs. For example, you can

block drilling in New Mexico near the Chaco Canyon National Historical Park. AAA has also noted that heavy rainstorms in Northern California have slowed the production capacity of refineries and helped in
the recent spikes in prices at the pump. However, spokesperson for AAA Doug Shupe told CNN that the dramatic price hikes are far steeper than people have seen in recent memory. “The person who has the typical midsize sedan with a 14-gallon size fuel
tank, they’re paying $21 more to fill up that tank today than last year,” Shupe said, noting that Americans are paying about $1.50 more per gallon, compared to last year before Biden took office. At a recent press conference, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki
Nike Doubles Down on Mental Health By Desert Star Staff Nike announced its new “Mind Sets” program last week, and it’s all about helping users prioritize their mental health. The goal is to get people to “move in any way that feels good for their mental wellbeing.” Mind Sets will deliver custom movement programs and mental health content across the Nike App, Nike Run Club, and social channels. Recent months have demonstrated the increasing importance of mental care for pro athletes:
• Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open to preserve her mental health in the face of media scrutiny. • Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley stepped away from the NFL to focus on his mental health. • Simone Biles admitted struggles with mental health issues during the Tokyo Olympics. • Ben Simmons cited mental health issues as part of the reason for his current absence from the Philadelphia 76ers. In addition, these benefits provide valuable coverage for many of life’s familiar but unexpected health events, such as accidents and illnesses. Trump Receives Ninth Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo
By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump has received a black belt in Taekwon-Do, the South Korean martial art. The award was given to him by the Kukkiwon, the school of the World Taekwondo Academy. It marks Trump’s first black belt, and it comes at a time when his remarks about martial arts and his racist rhetoric have roiled the world. The black belt, the ninth degree, is usually given to experienced martial artists who have been practicing for years. As President of the United States, the President will use his new title to promote the sport. Moreover,
he will be able to display it proudly at his Mar-a-Lago golf course. As a result, he will be able to advertise martial arts in his club, and he will also be able to use it for political purposes. The former President has vowed to wear fulltaekwondo gear during his next appearance in congress if he wins the election again. In addition, the former President has a home in Palm Beach and has visited the sport’s headquarters in Korea and other countries. While there, he met taekwondo instructors and autographed a book, which he signed for organization members.
Foot Locker Records $2.19B In Q3 Sales
By Desert Star Staff Foot Locker reported $2.19 billion in thirdquarter sales on Friday,
sliding past analysts’ estimates of $2.14 billion. Despite total sales jumping 3.9%, the company’s
net income fell year-over-year from $265 million to $158 million — but still managed to beat 2019’s third-quarter
net income of $125 million. Foot Locker has had a busy few months. • The company announced and completed the acquisition of West Coast athletic retailer WSS for $750 million during the quarter. • It also announced its acquisition of global retailer Atmos for $360 million in August, closing the deal earlier this month. • Foot Locker announced LCKR, the company’s first private apparel label since exiting the category three years ago. Merchandise inventory grew 9.1% year-over-year to $1.3 billion, partly attributed to the WSS acquisition.
Net income reached $790 million for the first nine months of the year — a significant increase from the $200 million posted during the same period last year — and sales totaled $6.6 billion during that span. Going forward, CFO Andrew Page expects “global supply chain issues to persist throughout the fourth quarter,” but says the company is well-positioned for the holiday season. Fullyear revenue estimates for the company are $8.85 billion. Foot Locker also issued $400 million in senior notes, due in 2029, during the quarter.
Amazon Takes Lead in Talks for NFL Media Stake
By Desert Star Staff Amazon has emerged as the frontrunner to buy a minority stake in the NFL’s media properties; sources tell Front Office Sports. According to sources, the tech giant is in talks with the country’s richest sports league about acquiring up to a 49% stake in NFL Network, RedZone and NFL.com. In June, the $10 billion clubs hired Goldman Sachs Group
to negotiate a deal to sell a chunk of NFL Media. But the deal with Amazon isn’t done, and a last-minute snag could push a final agreement back by several months, warned one source. The agreement would mark a significant jump in the growing business relationship between Amazon and the NFL if successful. • In 2022, Amazon Prime Video will become
the first streaming service to control an exclusive package of NFL games, paying $1 billion a year for the rights to “Thursday Night Football.” • Amazon’s foray into NFL broadcast rights began in 2017 when it became the streaming home of “Thursday
Night Football,” but those games were also broadcast on Fox and NFL Network. • The league’s Next Gen Stats have relied on Amazon Web Services since 2015. The NFL and Amazon both declined to comment. With annual revenue

Shifting Wellness Attitudes Shape 2022 Fitness Trends they ease back into more normal work routines.
Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff In adjusting to the constraints of the pandemic, many Americans had to improvise where and how they worked out. However, after months of adapting to a “gym anywhere” mentality and learning to accommodate more flexible workout schedules, this new fitness mindset inspires some more significant healthier living trends. “We’ve learned that wellness is not one-sizefits-all and that it’s achieved by small habits like regular hydration that can impact how you feel throughout the day,” said celebrity fitness trainer Harley Pasternak, MsC. “Collectively, nourishing both body and mind together as one makes holistic health a sustainable lifestyle.” Pasternak and the experts at Propel Fitness Water are forecasting five fitness and wellness trends to watch for in 2022:
www.desertstarweekly.com
Accountability Buddies: When gym closures ran rampant, folks leaned on others for inspiration to get moving, so it’s no surprise working out in pairs (or more) is a continued way to focus on fitness. Feelings of burnout may be common heading into 2022, so having a partner who gives you a healthy sense of camaraderie and competition can help push you to show up on days when you’d instead rest and stay committed to your goals. It also provides a sounding board when you need suggestions for nutritious recipes or fresh at-home cardio ideas.
accustomed to improvising where they work out, whether it was their neighbor’s garage, living room or a running path in the city. As exercisers are less beholden to a studio or gym schedule, the “gym anywhere” mentality is a level of flexibility many are holding on to, even as
Health in Small, Achievable Doses: This trend is all about recognizing health transformations don’t happen overnight, and even modest steps can make a big difference in how you feel throughout the day. One example is paying more attention to your hydration. If you aren’t adequately hydrated, few other things tend to go right either. Small habits like throwing Propel Powder Packs into your gym, work or school bag can make a difference. Filled with enough electrolytes to replace what is lost in sweat, they are handy for on-thego hydration and are easy to add to a water bottle. Wellness Goals vs. Fitness: Committing to overall wellness is more about lifestyle changes than numbers like weight loss or muscle mass. People embracing this trend are forgoing numeric goals based
on performance in the gym or on the scale and instead emphasizing outcomes that affect life, nourishing both body and mind together as one. Of course, fitness goals are an essential component, but so is supporting your mental health as well as being cognizant of what you’re putting into your body. When each piece is well taken care of, your body is better able to work like a well-oiled machine. Low-Impact Workouts: Walking treadmill challenges gained virality on social media this year, marking the increasing popularity of low-impact workouts yet effective. Getting moving is the key, even if it means taking your tempo down. You don’t need to do hours of HIIT every day to see results. Less time- and energyintensive workouts are easier to sustain and can often yield the same, or better, results. Find more hydration options and wellness tips at propelwater. com. Family Features
Versatility in Gym Spaces and Schedules: When a large segment of the workforce started working from home, the rituals of before- and after-work gym visits fell by the wayside. Instead, people grew more

January 6 probe subpoenas Roger Stone & Alex Jones
By Desert Star Staff The Democrat-led House committee investigating January 6 in Washington, DC, has issued five new subpoenas. Among the people the lawmakers want to question is Trump adviser Roger Stone and radio host Alex Jones. The committee wants to know “who organized, planned, paid for, and received funds” related to pro-Trump protests that escalated into a riot on Capitol Hill, “as well as what communications organizers had with officials in the White House and Congress,” Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) said in a statement. We believe the witnesses we subpoenaed today have relevant information. Accordingly, we expect them to cooperate fully with our effort to get answers for the American people about the violence of January 6. Stone, a Trump confidant, reportedly spoke at rallies on January 5 and was slated to speak the next day at the Ellipse protest that preceded
the march on the Capitol, the committee said. He also solicited support for the rallies and allegedly used the Oath Keepers group members as bodyguards, including one person who has since been indicted. According to the statement, Jones, a popular conservative radio host and conspiracy theorist, reportedly helped organize the Ellipse rally and claimed he provided “eighty percent” of its funding. In addition, he implied he was in communication with the Trump White House about the planned protests on January 6. The committee is also interested in promoting the claim that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump. Three other individuals who the committee believes can share details of how the protests in Washington were organized and funded are Dustin Stockton and Jennifer Lawrence, a couple who played vital parts in the ‘Stop the Steal’ movement, and Taylor Budowich, a Trump spokesperson. Stockton is of particular
interest to the investigators due to his reported efforts to warn the White House about the “possible danger” that marching from the Ellipse to the Capitol could pose, the statement said. Stone responded to Monday’s news by reiterating that he “had no advance knowledge of the events that took place at the Capitol on that day” and calling any claims to the contrary
“categorically false.” The Capitol Hill riot happened when US lawmakers were set to certify Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, to whom Trump has never conceded. Pro-Trump protesters broke into the Capitol Building. One of them was shot and killed by a police officer and later engaged in violent street clashes with security forces, during which four more
deaths among protesters and police occurred. Trump critics have treated the disturbance as one of the greatest threats the nation has ever faced. However, many of his supporters believe the violence may have been facilitated or even instigated by opponents of the former president in the FBI to justify the subsequent crackdown.

s temperatures drop, the risk of illness – including cold and flu – rises. It can be easy to mistake the flu for a common cold since many of the symptoms are the same, but muscle aches, cough, fever, headaches and sore throat are some of the more common signs you may be suffering from the flu, which tends to come on quicker than a cold. In fact, a random, double-opt-in OnePoll survey of 2,005 Americans commissioned by Mucinex found sore throat pain to be one of the top three most debilitating symptoms along with fever and migraine. While there’s no way to ensure you and your family members won’t get sick, there are steps you can take to reduce the chances.
Get a Flu Shot The flu spreads differently than colds and can be transmitted before symptoms even arise. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends all people older than 6 months of age get the influenza vaccine, or flu shot, annually to help protect against the strains of flu expected to be the most common during the current flu season. The injection, which does not contain a live virus, goes into the arm muscle to generate antibodies that protect against future flu infection about two weeks after receiving the vaccine.
Practice Self-Care
While important year-round, maintaining regular self-care practices can go a long way toward maintaining your health during cold and flu season. Eating a well-balanced diet of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins can help strengthen your immune system, as can working out moderately each day. Regular exercise also helps reduce inflammation. In addition, proper hydration can help maintain many important body functions, and getting the National Sleep Foundationrecommended 7-9 hours of sleep can help keep antibodies strong and build a defense against illnesses.
Prepare for Symptoms
As one of the common symptoms of the flu, sore throat pain can flip your life upside down with the constant nagging, disruptive pain and irritation. However, 55% of those surveyed said they were likely to “power through” a sore throat and continue working, going to school and completing other tasks while dealing with sore throat pain. To make powering through easier, the Mucinex InstaSoothe line includes lozenges and sprays designed to numb, soothe and relieve sore throat pain. “What separates these lozenges from others is they’re clinically proven to numb sore throat pain fast,” said Dr. Omid Mehdizadeh, MD, otolaryngology, and head and neck (ENT) surgeon. “Both lozenge varieties contain Hexylresorcinol, a local anesthetic for topical use on the mucous membranes of the throat and mouth. As a lozenge dissolves in the mouth, it starts to deliver a local ‘numbing’ anesthetic effect directly to the throat within seconds, lasting up to two hours. For those needing relief from a sore throat and cough, the Mucinex InstaSoothe Sore Throat + Cough Relief Lozenges also contain the active ingredient Dextromethorphan HBr to provide cough suppression.”
Stock Your Medicine Cabinet
Be ready before cold and flu hit your household. Take inventory of your medicine cabinet, get rid of any expired medicines and make note of any you need to replace and replenish. Make sure you have pain relievers, fever reducers, decongestants, antihistamines and cough syrups that can be used to help fight cold and flu symptoms. In addition, think about other supplies you may need to have on hand such as tissues, cough drops, hand sanitizer, anti-bacterial soap, a thermometer and a humidifier.
Disinfect Household Surfaces
Cold and flu viruses can live outside the human body on hard, non-porous surfaces such as metal, plastic and wood for hours, and sometimes even days. Regularly cleaning often-touched household surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, remote controls, faucet handles and countertops with a disinfectant spray or wipe can help kill germs that cause the viruses. Look for Environmental Protection Agency-approved

disinfectants containing bleach, alcohol, pine oil, sodium hypochlorite, citric acid, hydrogen peroxide or quaternary ammonium compounds for best results.
Remember Healthy Habits
One of the easiest ways to help avoid getting sick is to practice proper hygiene. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth as much as possible, as these are areas where cold and flu germs can most easily gain entry into your system. Remember to cough and sneeze into a tissue or into your elbow if a tissue is not readily available. Frequently wash your hands with warm water and anti-bacterial soap for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the restroom, before eating and after touching surfaces in public places. A good rule of thumb is to sing “Happy Birthday” twice to judge the time. Using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer can also suffice when a sink isn’t within close proximity. Also avoid sharing items like utensils and cups, even with family members, to help avoid spreading germs.
Have a Plan for Sick Days During cold and flu season, you or one of your family members may become ill and need to miss work or school. If you typically work in an office space, check to see if working remotely is possible and verify your office’s policies about sick time. Saving sick time or a couple vacation days for the season can help avoid having to take unpaid time off if you need to stay home for any reason. Also consider enlisting the help of friends or relatives to help with sick children in the event you’re unable to take time off from work, and coordinate with your children’s teachers to ensure your little ones receive any schoolwork they may have missed while home sick.
