Thanks4Giving Gala Rick & Janet Blanke Schein, gala chair Robert Schein, and auctioneer Brian Harnik. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The first Lifestream Blood Bank Thanks4Giving Gala was held on Thursday, Nov.21st. The event was held at the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort & Spa in the Emerald Ballroom. Over 250 people attended this inaugural event. There was a fabulous silent

auction with items from well known and celebrity sports, figures, musicians, artists, and more. Gold Records were nicely displayed with the autograph of the artist. There were hotel stays, art pieces, and jewelry, to name a few as the list of items in the silent was very long.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 8th Annual Props & Hops Beer Fest was held at the Palm Springs Air Museum on Saturday, Nov. 23rd. Hundreds of people attended this over 21 events to be able to get a taste of the many breweries that brought samples. The General Miles Korea and Vietnam Hangar was filled with hundreds of people. Brewery vendors filled the area with sometimes a line in front of a favorite brewery. There was a VIP ticket where ticket holders came early and got 12 tasting tickets instead of the general admission 8 tickets. The early entrance hour gave them a chance to taste rare beer pairings supplied by Babe’s Brewery and LULU’s Restaurant. People were treated

to entertainment the whole afternoon. Entertainer groups were the Desert Sol, The Alley Cats, and DJ Alex Harrington. If ticket holders were hungry, there were food trucks available by In-N-Out Burger, Meatball Syndicate, Fries Galore, and a cool dessert, The Cone Zone. Aircraft rides were available on the internet early. There were $99 flights offered on the C-47, which held 10 passengers. Flight exhibitions were held throughout the afternoon by these rare P-51 mustangs, C-47, and T-28 Trojan planes. People could view these and other aircraft on display. I watched one man explain the working part of the aircraft he once flew to his wife. He

A Conversational Concert With David Syme, Jewish Irish Pianist

Phyllis Eisenberg, David Syme, Patricia Green, Picce Glast and Bob Glast. Photo by Pat Krause By Pamela Price Once again, David Syme, American piano virtuoso who resides in a quiet village in Ireland, returned to Temple Sinai in Palm Desert on November 18, stunning the audience with his repertoire ranging from classic rock hits to Beethoven Sonatas. An alumnus of Juilliard and Indiana University Mr. Syme tours internationally while performing at Steinway galleries, synagogues, and smaller venues, worldwide. The setting for his evening concert was impressive with a grand piano centered on

the bimah accentuated by stunning orange stained glass positioned behind the performer. The setting was as dramatic as was the artistry of the pianist’s choice of compositions. There was no intermission as Mr. Syme spoke informally to the audience throughout his performance, similar to the style he described to the audience when entertaining at his country home in Ireland. “His insider comments on composers and compositions from Frederic Chopin to Billy Joel were fascinating,” said Phyllis Eisenberg,

adding there was never a dull moment between his conversation, more of a stream of consciousness and his rather charming style of interpreting composers. Engaging the audience in the backstory, explaining why he relocated to a rural Irish village was a story in itself. For home, You will find him and his wife now comfortable residing in the southwest coast of Ireland between Cork and Dublin. Reflecting his belief that music brings people together, even geographically. He revealed how the popularity of his home concerts brought November 27, 2019

a new dimension to the Irish village he now calls home. Syme’s inimitable rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody revealed his knowledge of an astounding range of composers. His repertoire was sprinkled with comments bringing a personal dimension to his performance. There were no intermission glimpses of his musical career revealed when he remarked how he had dealt with a stroke he experienced since his last return at Temple Sinai, in 2018. It was apparent his recovery has been impressive, enhanced by personal stories

he shared with the audience. David Syme’s infinite talent and inspirational tenacity put him in a spotlight of his own creation. His conversational style and witty remarks once again boosted his growing popularity in the desert. Phyllis Eisenberg remarked, “It was such an enjoyable evening listening to a versatile pianist who has a natural ability to interact with the audience between concertos and conversation. His desert ‘fan club’ looks forward to a command performance.” www.desertstarweekly.com

Women Claiming Social Security are Confused on the many Rules

By Janice Gough Women live, according to actuaries, longer than men, and many have divorced. How to file Benefits’ leads to confusion when a woman becomes eligible to draw Social Security. An excellent example of how not understanding Social Security’s rules, can cause women to lose out, is demonstrated by the story of one of Johnny Carson’s exspouse. “The Tonight Show” host, even though his first, third, and fourth wives did take benefits from his Social Security, his second wife

made this big mistake. He was married to three of his wives for more than 10 years, and his second wife, Joanne, for nine years & 11mos. His fourth wife, Alexis, stayed married until his death. The surviving spouse, Alexis, got his full benefit amount. Wives one and three got survivor ex-spouse benefits. But the woman he was married to for only nine years, his second wife Joanne, could not claim on him at all. Knowing why, however, can help you understand some of Social Security’s detail-riddled rules and make more knowledgeable claiming decisions. If Joanne had waited one more month to file for divorce, she would have qualified, as you must be married for 10 years, for an ex-spouse to collect. As for the divorced woman, not all will be eligible to receive benefits based on their exspouses’ work records. That’s because, first off, there are essential criteria to be met; There are four rules: You had to be married for 10 consecutive years or longer. You each have had to reach age 62. You need to have been divorced for two years or longer, or the ex-husband already must be claiming his benefits. The fourth rule is that the ex-wife has not remarried. Some women do not realize that both a current wife

and an ex-wife can claim on the same husband’s Social Security benefits. They don’t have to divvy up the money, and the Ex-Husband is not notified of the claim. A woman doesn’t need her ex-husband’s permission or to even let him know that she’s applying to claim on his Social Security record. Many women freeze when faced with Social Security claiming decisions. A big pitfall is that some women think that if they claim at 62, they’re going to get a bump-up at full retirement age. Once you have filed, the early penalty of 25% by filing before the Full Retirement Age (FRA) is permanent. The No. 1 misconception divorced women have is they think, they will get more than one benefit, their own and half of their ex-husband’s. You only receive half of his or yours, whichever bonus is higher. From a Social Security vantage point, you can only take benefits from one bucket. The four buckets are Single, married, widowed, or divorced. Even though you may be in multiple buckets, Social Security will inform you of the higher bucket to claim benefits from. If one married two men & divorced both after 10 years, she gets a choice of which Ex is the better to file on. The Ex-spouse’s benefits are not changed no matter how many Ex-

spouses are claiming on him If a wife files on her husband’s benefit (spousal benefit is half of his), She can suspend her interest to accrue an annual bonus of 8% applied to her benefits to age 70 and then take the higher of the two amounts. When a divorce occurred 30 years ago, and the exwife hasn’t kept track of the guy, she may think, “How am I going to find him?” You don’t find him. Just find your divorce decree. That’s all you need. It has all the information on it that Social Security needs. If you filed on your own benefit, not realizing eligibility as an Ex-spouse, to file on him and his benefit is greater, you can ask Social Security Administration to see if there’s back pay owed. If a woman who’s divorced from a man who receives a public pension that’s subject to the Windfall Elimination Provision., which lowers Social Security benefits, she has a right to claim on those benefits. Her benefit will be calculated on his Primary Insurance Amount (PIA), which is lower because he’s receiving a public pension. Her ex-spouse benefits will, therefore, be lower too. However, this reduction applies only while the ex-husband is alive because it doesn’t affect survivor benefits. Thus, if he dies before she does, she

can have the Social Security Administration recalculate her benefits as a surviving ex-wife. That will be made on his original Primary Insurance Amount (PIA), not on the lower WEP-PIA. I suggest that women should visit the Social Security office for information that’s specific to their situation. There are two buckets of money: the spousal benefit (1/2) and the survivor benefit (his Full Retirement). Each has different rules, and, most importantly, like the widow, you can switch between them. If you are healthy at Full Retirement Age, consider filing on a spousal benefit first, and let your own benefits grow till age 70. Your interest will grow by 8% each year to age 70 when you can switch to your own benefit, which could have increased by 40% more. Social Security wasn’t designed as a welfare program. It was explicitly framed in the 1930s to be a pay-in to get a payout. Rules Regarding Children, and Blocked Driveways

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Mr. Richardson: Can an HOA come up with new house rules that ban children from playing outside the units? Especially with many young children that live here. G.G., Lawndale

Dear G.G.: Under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (Government Code 12900-12996), “familial status” is protected against discrimination by Government Code 12955(a). This means one cannot discriminate against residents with children. Rules targeting the activities of children are illegal discrimination, even if they are well-intentioned and appear to be based upon safety reasons. If due to safety concerns an association wishes to curtail recreational activities in common areas, an operating rule should not mention the age of the person doing so, but instead should simply focus on the activity. For example, would skateboarding

by legendary skater Tony Hawk be OK in the common areas? What about Lionel Messi playing soccer in the parking lot or drive aisles? If not, then simply ban skateboarding and soccer and avoid mentioning the age of the participants. California law specifically allows senior communities to discriminate based upon familial status, by exempting them from Government Code 12955. Section 12955.9 specifically excludes “housing for older persons” from the ban on familial status discrimination. Associations should be careful in drafting rules to avoid discrimination. Not only does the Department of Fair Employment and Housing pursue violations, but private housing rights organizations and aggrieved residents all can pursue lawsuits as well. Thanks, Kelly.

sidewalk, blocking my path and the path of my disabled neighbors, forcing us to walk in the street, and increasing the likelihood that I will trip and fall. Since I am in a protected class of people, if I seek a “reasonable accommodation” from my HOA, what are my chances in getting them to abide by state law and city municipal codes which say that vehicles may not park on sidewalks? I can’t even walk to see my neighbor down the street. Thank you. G.C., San Diego

Dear G.C.: Persons with disabilities may ask their HOA for reasonable accommodations to allow them to enjoy their residence and community amenities. However, the issue does not pertain to an access impediment to your home or to a specific amenity in the HOA. Dear Kelly, The situation you describe I am disabled and cannot affects all residents, not only walk easily, properly, or safely those with mobility disabilities. when there are obstacles in my The accommodation you seek way. cause is driveways which are too short to fit normal cars. The Fair Housing Regulations require you and the HOA to pursue an “interactive process,” meaning a dialogue regarding your request. Describe your concern and ask to meet to discuss what the board can do. If it proves all but impossible to help, the accommodation would be considered “unreasonable.” Everybody should try to work together. Another factor is safetyis the board addressing the possible safety concern about all residents being forced to walk in the street? This might be a concern which should be considered. 5 Ways to Stay Safe During the Dangerous Holiday Driving Season

By Desert Star Staff The holidays can be the happiest time of the year, but unfortunately, they can also be the most dangerous, with more fatal car crashes occurring due to increased travel time, more alcohol use and excessive speed, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety

Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA predicts that during this Christmas week, from Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at 6 p.m. through Thursday, January 2, 2020 at 5:59 a.m., 799 people will lose their lives nationwide due to car crashes. While it may be uncomfortable to consider these predictions,

NHTSA’s report says that analyzing and forecasting fatalities can serve as useful warnings to the public, actually making roads safer. “No one wants to think about what can go wrong, especially at such a joyful time of year, but as the saying goes, prevention is better than

cure,” said Jon Bloom, vice president, personal auto, Erie Insurance. “The good news is that there are specific things that people can do help keep themselves and their families safe this holiday season.” Erie Insurance offers these five tips for safer holiday driving. • Keep your car roadready. Proper maintenance will help keep your car in shape for whatever road conditions you encounter. In addition to getting regularly scheduled oil changes, make sure your car’s fluids are topped off and that filters, hoses and other components are in good working order. If they’re showing signs of wearing out, replace them. • Maintain properly inflated tires. Not maintaining the right tire pressure can lead to flats and blowouts, which could cause you to lose control of your car and crash. Pay close attention to your car’s tire pressure monitoring system. If you see an alert that tire pressure is low, fill them as soon as possible. • Be ready for emergencies. While maintaining your car can reduce your chance of being stranded along the side of the road, it could still happen. Keep an emergency

kit in the car with a cell phone charger, blanket and first aid kit, along with bottled water and snacks. Also, check with your insurance agent to ensure your policy includes Emergency Roadside Service coverage so that if your car does break down, you can call for help. • Give yourself plenty of time. With speeding being one of the top causes of car crashes, it’s important to remember that there’s no prize for arriving first. It’s much better to drive the speed limit -- or even lower, depending on road conditions and build in a few extra minutes to get where you’re going, especially when driving near busy shopping malls or on holiday travel days when traffic is heavy. • Stay sober or designate a driver. Celebrating with a holiday toast? Plan ahead and have a designated driver, or use a cab or ride sharing service to get home. Regardless, never get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking. While the holidays can be a particularly perilous time to drive, taking precautions can help ensure you, and others on the road, have a safe season. StatePoint

3 Tips for a Happier, Healthier You This Holiday

By Desert Star Staff During the holiday season, there tends to be a lot of focus on big celebrations and spending money. But during this festive time of year, it is also important to take steps that will keep your family, your home and your wallet healthy. Use these tips from the experts at Dollar General to enjoy a happier holiday season. Hospitable Home: With

friends and family visiting frequently, the holidays are a busy time around the home. To prepare for all of your guests, get your home into pristine shape. Stock up on cleaning supplies like disinfectant wipes, trash bags and paper items. Create a holiday season routine that dedicates one day a week or a few minutes daily to sprucing up. For holiday meals, look

for wholesome ingredients like milk, eggs, bread, cheese, proteins, frozen and canned vegetables, canned fruits, grains and more. All of these healthier food options are available at more than 16,000 Dollar General locations. Be sure to check your local store as the discount retailer is expected to have fresh fruits and vegetables available in approximately 650 stores by

January. You can balance some of those heavier dishes enjoyed around the holidays with healthier snacking options. For delicious recipes and tips for holiday meals visit, Dollargeneral.com/easy-meals. Mindful Wallet: Create a budget for the entire season that includes seasonal expenses such as gift-giving, hosting, meal preparation, decorations and more. Then, plan to stick to this budget with thoughtful spending. Luckily, it’s easier to plan your expenditures in advance thanks to new tech. When shopping for friends, family and loved ones, use apps with budget-friendly features, such as the Dollar General app found on the App Store or Google Play. Its Shopping List feature helps you create your shopping list and calculate your estimated total before even going to the store. If you don’t have time to plan your trip, the Cart Calculator function, which is available in approximately 12,000 stores, allows you to scan products, find digital coupon savings and keep a

running total of your basket. Additionally, you can take advantage of great deals offered by local and online stores such as Dollar General, which is currently running a toy discount of 25 percent off any $75+ qualifying purchase through December 24. Healthier You: The season’s cooler temperatures can adversely affect immunity, and possibly impact your family’s risk of contracting viruses and bacterial infections, so watch for the warning signs and take preventative measures to stay well. Remember to wash your hands often, particularly before preparing food, stay hydrated, get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly and consider stocking up on over-thecounter vitamins and minerals to improve winter wellness. It’s the season for celebration. Indulge yourself in making the most out of your time with loved ones, friends and family, but be confident in making healthy choices for you, your home and your wallet. StatePoint

Best Flu Hacks Every Traveler Should Know By Desert Star Staff While everyone wants to make the most of their vacation, travel can do a number on one’s health, and during flu season, the risk of feeling unwell is even higher. Feel your best with these tips: • Flu levels increase during winter because people spend more time in enclosed spaces together touching surfaces and breathing “shared” air. Traveling only amplifies this. Reduce your chances of swapping germs by avoiding contact with shared items. For example, don’t put your face directly on airline-supplied pillows or blankets that haven’t been sanitized. • Ironically, just when handwashing is most vital -while traveling -- it becomes less convenient. Carry handwipes and sanitizers and use them when you can’t wash your hands. More importantly, avoiding rubbing your eyes or nose. • An airplane cabin’s dry air accommodates the growth of viruses that thrive on low humidity. Additionally, travelers often refrain from hydrating to avoid frequent bathroom trips. Yet, when mucous membranes are dry, they can’t keep germs at bay. A general rule is to drink at least 8 ounces of water for every hour in the air. Under the weather? Drink more than the daily recommended 8-10 cups to prevent dehydration caused by fever, loosen mucus, keep your throat moist and lessen the chance www.desertstarweekly.com

of the virus’ success. • Getting medical attention away from home is tough. Travel smart with overthe-counter products that are homeopathic and easy to use. Some, like Oscillococcinum, are good to pack in your carry-on so you can take at the first sign of symptoms. Though these uses have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration, clinical studies show that Oscillococcinum reduces the duration and severity of flu symptoms such as body aches, headache, fever, chills and fatigue. Widely available in supermarkets and drugstores, this flu medicine is taken without water, making it an ideal travel remedy. “I recommend that travelers keep Oscillococcinum on-hand: an easy-to-take, non-drowsy medicine that can be used for anyone ages 2 and up,” says Dr. Ken Redcross, a board-certified physician in internal medicine and author of “Bond: The 4 Cornerstones of a Lasting and Caring Relationship with Your Doctor.” “It works best when taken at the first sign of flu, so it’s important to pay close attention to symptoms.” To learn more, visit Oscillo.com. • Will you arrive in time to make your connection? What if you forgot to pack Aunt Ethel’s present? There’s no doubt that travel can cause stress, which research has shown can increase susceptibility to flu and even

increase the severity of symptoms. Being flexible, prepared and building extra time into your schedule can make for stress-free travel. • Exercise boosts energy and immunity, so don’t take a vacation from

workouts while traveling. Pack workout wear and carve out time for exercise. • Unusual travel schedules, unfamiliar beds and crossing time zones can disrupt a sleep schedule. Get plenty of rest before your trip

to keep your body’s natural defenses at optimum levels. Getting sick can put a damper on even the best vacation. Take steps to feel your best. StatePoint

How to Help Young Adults Build Credit History

By Desert Star Staff As young adults establish their financial independence, they may be overwhelmed with enticing credit card offers. Free airfare, cashback and special introductory rates may be tempting, but choosing the right card is more important than snagging some fun freebies. If your young adult is looking to get started

with credit, consider these options to help guide them toward their financial goals. • Add them as an authorized user on your card: When just starting out, young adults may have trouble getting approved for a credit card independently. One way to help with this is to add your young adult as an authorized user on one of your credit card accounts. Many lenders

report account information for authorized users to credit reporting agencies, which helps develop a credit history. For most cards, both positive and negative account activity is reported. Think of it as your young adult’s credit report inheriting your credit habits. Your child will get his or her own card, but you’ll remain the primary account holder. This means

you’re on the hook for any purchases they make. • Apply for a secured or student credit card: One option for students with limited income and a short credit history is a secured credit card. This type of card will help build credit history like a standard credit card would. The main difference is that secured cards require a deposit up-front, which acts as the card’s credit limit. Despite forking over a deposit, your student must still pay back the outstanding balance in full and the funds from the deposit can’t be used to pay off the balance. After graduating to a regular card or closing the secured card account, the issuing bank will refund the deposit amount. Those with an established credit history may want to consider a student credit card, which is no different from other credit cards, but typically has lower credit limits. This type of card generally requires proof of income for approval, so they make the most sense for students who have jobs.

• Consider a rewards card carefully: Once young adults have established healthy credit card habits and a more robust history, they can move on to choosing the best card for their situation. Those alluring rewards credit cards are popular because of their perks and bonuses like cashback, bank points and travel miles on their purchases. But as exciting as they may be, if your young adult isn’t careful, spending can easily get out of hand. These cards, some of which have annual fees, should be reserved for those who have a set budget and strict spending plan. For more tips on helping your young adult get started with credit, download TransUnion’s parent toolkit at transunion.com/pathtocredit. Whether an authorized user on your account or already on their own credit path, it’s important for your young adult to understand how credit works and how to interact with it responsibly. StatePoint

Tips to Support Alzheimer’s Caregivers During the Holidays By Desert Star Staff More than 16 million family members and friends are serving as Alzheimer’s caregivers in the U.S. As families approach the holiday season, there are easy ways to support caregivers that can ease the burden of caregiving and help make the holidays a joyous time for everyone. “Holidays can be stressful for all of us, but they can be especially demanding for caregivers,” says Ruth Drew, director of information and support services at the Alzheimer’s Association. “It’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, but little gestures can go a long way and can be easier than you think – just one hour of help can make a big difference for a caregiver.” An Alzheimer’s Association survey reports that many caregivers are not getting the help and support they need – an overwhelming 84 percent of caregivers say they would like more support in caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, especially from family members.

The Alzheimer’s Association offers tips for families that can help ease the burden on caregivers this holiday season: 1. Build on traditions: Caregivers may feel overwhelmed by maintaining traditions. Experiment with new traditions that might be less stressful or a better fit for the caregiver. For example, turn the traditional holiday dinner into a lunch. 2. Adjust expectations: The stress of caregiving responsibilities layered with holiday traditions can take a toll. If a caregiver has traditionally hosted family celebrations, offer to host instead. 3. Give them a break: Make a standing appointment to give caregivers a break. Offer to spend time with the person living with Alzheimer’s to allow the caregiver a chance to run holiday errands or engage in an activity that helps he or she recharge. 4. Check in regularly: It’s easy for people to lose touch during the holidays. Calling to check in, sending a note

or stopping by for a visit can make a big difference in a caregiver’s day and help them feel supported. 5. Tackle holiday todo lists: Caregivers are often overwhelmed by the demands of caregiving and it can be hard for them to find time to complete simple tasks that others may take for granted. For example, gift a household chore service or meal delivery service. To learn more and access resources, visit www. alz.org, the website of the Alzheimer’s Association or call its 24/7, free Helpline

Last Minute Holiday Gift Ideas for the Man Who Has Everything By Desert Star Staff Let’s face it, most people have a tendency to procrastinate around the holiday season, especially when it comes to scoring the perfect presents for those who are hard to shop for. To help stumped shoppers, here are some last-minute gift ideas to consider for “the man who has everything”: • Grill Accessories: Surprise your favorite grill master with an unusual grill accessory. Think outdoor popcorn poppers or a monogrammed iron brand to personalize his steaks. • Home Theater Set-Up: Whether you’re shopping for a movie buff, gaming fanatic or sports enthusiast, you can step-up his home theater game with a great projector. Those in the Slim line-up from Casio combine laser and LED technology for long life and high brightness, making it possible to have a great viewing experience in any room of the house.

• DIY: From roasting one’s own coffee to brewing one’s own beer, consider the gift of a cool new handson hobby. These days, kits make it easy to give great gifts to intrepid DIY-ers. • Keyboards: Aspiring musicians and experts alike will appreciate the gift of a high-quality instrument. One especially cool choice is the CT-S200 portable keyboard, which is available in black, white or red. Ultra-compact and battery-operated, it features a carrying handle and a button which quickly recalls your favorite settings to make portability and setup a cinch. A good choice for those in traveling bands, it’s also well-suited for beginners, as it connects to an app offering lessons. • Organizational tools: For those guys who value organization, a label printer is just the tool for enhancing any area, from workshops, garages and sheds to closets, media collections and home offices. Alcohol has almost the same number of calories per gram as fat, and a typical hot chocolate with whipped cream from a coffee shop is around 400 calories. If you’re going to

Top 5 Holiday Temptations and How to Avoid Them By Desert Star Staff The holiday season means delicious food and parties galore. If you’ve been dedicated to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, there’s no reason to throw away all your hard work. You just need to make adjustments to your routine so you can enjoy the season guilt-free. According to Courtney McCormick, dietitian at Nutrisystem, these are the five biggest holiday temptations and how to manage them. Temptation #1: Parties: To avoid temptation at holiday gatherings, never walk into one hungry. No amount of willpower will stop you from rushing the dessert table if you arrive on an empty stomach. Before you go, have a good, balanced meal that includes protein, veggies and plenty of water. Even if you do treat yourself to a Christmas cookie www.desertstarweekly.com

once there, you’ve done some substantial damage control. Temptation #2: Skipping Workouts: Exercise frequency drops off dramatically once weather gets cold and messy, according to a Gallup poll. If you don’t have a gym membership, investing in a few key pieces of exercise equipment -- bands, kettle bells -- can help you supplement indoor workouts and maintain an active lifestyle in cold weather. “I always aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. If I’m having a hard day, I break it up into 10-minute increments -- in the morning, afternoon and at night. It makes it much more manageable,” says Marie Osmond, entertainer and Nutrisystem ambassador. Temptation #3: Office Treats: As if your own holiday party indulgences weren’t bad

enough, you also have to deal with other people’s leftover treats in your workplace breakroom. To avoid temptation, make sure your meal prep is on point every week and includes snacks to keep you full throughout the day. It’s much easier to politely decline those brownies when you’ve filled up on almonds or light popcorn. Temptation #4: Holiday Traditions: Turkey with all the trimmings. Gingerbread houses with the kids. Hot chocolate on Christmas Eve. As much as we look forward to these traditions, they can take a toll on a healthy lifestyle. This year, try focusing less on food and more on shared experiences. Trade the annual cookie bake-off for a day of crafting or ice skating; skip your calorie-laden dessert and become the life of the party by bringing board November 27, 2019

HOROSCOPES ARIES

There’s so much to be thankful for as an Aries. A brilliant mind that can go here, there and everywhere, filled with goals, plans, ideas, desires and aspirations. You hear a call to travel, to wander and to be in places far away; the exotic seeking to replace the day by day. But then you feel the pull of responsibilities. Fret not. Something will come and take you away. It’s intelligent, loving and carries you into the future.

TAURUS You continue to work day and night preparing for the future. Some Taurus’s are focused upon the well-being of their community, not wanting to have a future lacking basic needs and comfort. You are sensitive to all the needs of others (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual). Resources are needed to fulfill hopes, wishes and dreams. Know the cosmic law that when we serve humanity the resources to continue that serving appears unexpectedly. Gratitude is the key.

GEMINI Are you wishing for a change in lifestyle, a change of heart? Are you and a partner, colleague, friend or close associate discussing travel, goals, physical, spiritual or philosophical needs? Are there disagreements? Know that flurries of conflict are useful and purposeful. Tension creates attention and new understanding.

NOVEMBER 27 – DECEMBER 3, 2019 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

Relationship conflicts and clashes sharpen the mind. Keep discussing. It lays the groundwork for later gratitude.

CANCER Cancer’s moods change and fluctuate, following the phases of the moon. Soon you’ll swing into action tending to this and that, here and there. However much you want to complete things, you may become overworked and overtired. Should pain or inflammation flare-up, remember Turmeric (in caps) and cayenne (sprinkled over food) are natural anti-inflammatory. Begin new rhythms now that Mercury is direct. You’re grateful that you can.

LEO The Sun, Moon, Jupiter and Venus have shifted into your house of creativity (5th house), fun, entertainment, pleasure, amusement, games and children. So now you must learn how to live and redesign your daily life with a few more of these qualities that bring you ease, a bit of indulgence, leisure and recreation. It is good to take up an art form, perhaps painting or photography. All of these create a sense of balance and equilibrium. You need a party.

VIRGO A new level creativity is emerging and it surprises you. While family and friends gather together, you’re considering plans, goals and philosophical ideas. When attempting to

communicate ideas you notice some understand you and others don’t. That’s OK. Focus less on others understanding you and more on gratitude, seeking to bring love and harmony (through intentions for Goodwill) to all interactions. Wounds then heal. And people listen.

LIBRA Whenever communicating in coming weeks, notice that many will be listening, seeking to learn philosophical and spiritual truths. You are the steward of this opportunity and it’s your responsibility at this time. Your words are to bring in new information about the present/future, create a structure of hope and aspiration, and offer pathways of harmony for those seeking guidance and direction. You always do your best. You hold the Temperance Tarot card for many.

SCORPIO Mercury in Scorpio sends profound messages into your mind, taking you into other dimensions of reality. Mercury is your special messenger always shielding and protecting you. Tend to any financial issues. Then assess once again what your values are and how (and if) you value yourself and your gifts enough. Have your values changed recently? Remember the Scorpio keynote: “Warrior am I and from the battle I emerge triumphant.” This is your banner.

SAGITTARIUS It’s a very good time for Sags. Actually, because of Jupiter it’s always a very good time though if you’re on the Path it may feel rocky and tumultuous at times. But behind all the shifts, changes, curves & precipices, challenges and obligations, toward the mountain of Initiation you walk and always there is a sense of joy. Joy is from the Soul. Happiness from the personality. Understand the differences, recognizing when they occur. One sings, the other…well, is learning.

CAPRICORN Have the weeks been rather frantic, filled with confusion and harsh sounds? How is your health and your hearing? The coming weeks are slower, calmer, offering more repose. Choose comfort, solitude and self-care. Pluto (transformation), Saturn (discipline) and the South Node (the past) continue in Capricorn. They have profound effects on our lives. When in any sort of doubt call in the Angel of the Presence. Then, harmony appears from within.

need? Needs are important. Wants are secondary. But more importantly, what are you thankful and grateful for? Then the key turns and the door opens.

PISCES Neptune in Pisces has turned direct. A refinement occurs, a call to more spiritual work, inspiration, intuition, dreams and visions. You’ll be summoned out from under the water lilies, so you can allow yourself to be seen and heard to those asking for your gifts. Know that confidence grows with each new endeavor. Use your focused will(ingness), love and intelligence. Ask for help when needed. You are well prepared. Your dreams come true. AQUARIUS The planetary energies are gathered in your sphere of friends, future, hopes, wishes, and everything you’ve ever wanted to be and do. So, who are your friends, how do you see your future, what you do you hope and wish for and what are your visions and dreams? What do you

‘Indian Horse’--From Novel to Screen

The film “Indian Horse,” based on a novel by the late Richard Wagamese, explores Canada’s mistreatment of aboriginal children who, in the past, were removed from their tribes and placed in CanadianIndian residential schools. The purpose behind this was to erase their indigenous heritage and turn them into good Christians. Unfortunately, this practice continued well into the 20th century. The story begins in the fall of 1959 as six-year-old Saul (Sladen Peltier) and his brother travel north with their parents and grandmother via canoe.

They intend to return to Indian territory so they can begin their life anew. Unfortunately, things change when Saul’s brother develops a terrible cough and dies. At this point, his father and mother, a Chrisitan convert, return to civilization with their dead son so that he can be blessed by a priest. When they never return, the grandmother and Saul continue their journey home. Sadly she dies en route, and the young boy is taken to live in a Canadian-Indian residential school run by nuns and priests. The school, determined to erase the children’s ties

to their ethnic roots, is a harsh and cold environment. The head nun is particularly cruel. Her mission is to instill Christian values, but not Christian virtues like love and kindness. She often imparts punishments that upset Father Gaston (Dutchman Michel Huisman, Daario Naharis from “Game of Thrones”) who takes young Saul under his wing. Thanks to Father Gaston, the boy learns about ice hockey. Saul loves watching the older boys play and cleans the school’s ice rink every morning. Eventually, he starts to practice the game on his

own, using pucks made from frozen horse dung. Soon his skills come to Father Gaston’s attention. At this point, the priest not only mentors the boy, but he also makes it possible for Saul to play for the school’s hockey team, even though he is quite young. In 1968 Saul was adopted by Fred Kelly (Michael Lawrenchuck), who manages a team of native Canadian players. Saul is an excellent player, but racism rears its ugly head when he begins to play against all-white Canadian teams. Often the Indian players are forced to

fight against prejudiced players from the opposing side who ridicule them. Eventually, Saul becomes discouraged. He considers quitting, even though he is an excellent player because he feels he doesn’t belong. In his mind, hockey is a white man’s sport. In therapy, he reevaluates his life and personal journey and finds peace. “Iron Horse,” now available on DVD, contains interviews with the film’s cast and crew. The film is unrated but is basically suitable for all age groups.

Billy Ray Cyrus And Lil Nas X Win American Music Award

By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Billy Ray Cyrus continues touching audiences and all ages worldwide with the success of “Old Town Road (Billy Ray Cyrus Remix)” with Lil Nas X as the pair are honored with an American Music Award for Favorite Song Hip-Hop/Rap. Already this year, Cyrus and Lil Nas X took home two MTV VMA Moonmen for Song of the Year and Best Direction,

as well as two trophies at the BET Hip Hop Awards for Best Collab, Duo or Group and Single of the Year. This is all the on the heels of the song being certified diamond by the RIAA. Billy Ray Cyrus became a household name for his unprecedented career, which spans across music, television, and theater. Throughout his nearly three-decade career, Cyrus has achieved worldwide success as a singer, songwriter, actor, and producer. He also enjoyed a successful career as an actor in “Doc” and “Still The King,” as well as the Disney series “Hannah Montana” with his daughter Miley. Recently, Cyrus has shattered records with Lil Nas X with the global smash, “Old Town Road,” which remained No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 19 consecutive weeks.

FAMILY FEATURES

hile heart disease is a leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, many of the risk factors associated with the condition can be controlled with dietary and lifestyle changes. By centering your meals around better-for-you ingredients and recipes, you can show your heart some extra love. Consider walnuts, which are a heart-healthy food certified by the American Heart Association. More than 25 years of research shows walnuts may play a key role in heart health. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved one of the first qualified health claims for a whole food, finding that eating 1 1/2 ounces of walnuts per day as part of a low-saturated fat and low-cholesterol diet while not increasing caloric intake may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Additionally, walnuts are the only nut signifi cantly high in omega-3s, with 2 1/2 grams of alpha-linolenic acid per ounce. Walnuts can add this essential nutrient to dishes like these American Heart Association HeartCheck Mark certified recipes for Greek Cucumber Walnut Bites and Banana Bread Overnight Oats. MUSIC

BY ROBERT KINSLER

November Brings Must-Hear Titles

Some of music’s most notable heroes and underground names have crucial new collections available now, or coming as part of Record Store Day’s Black Friday celebration being held on Friday, Nov. 29, 2019. Artist: Beck Title: Hyperspace (Capitol Records) You might like if you enjoy: Beck, Radiohead Tell me more: With modern rock no longer a major force in the mainstream, Beck has continued his transformation into the future with his genresblending fourteenth studio album “Hyperspace.” Indeed, this is an album that sounds as if it was beamed back in time, dreamt up and recorded years from now. Beck’s 2017 LP “Colors” was a commercial success, but lacked the farreaching experimental and art rock flourishes that have marked so much of the Los Angeles-based artist’s creative output dating back to the early 1990s. The 11-track “Hyperspace” is a move back in the right direction, thanks to the notable contributions of principal collaborator Pharrell Williams (who co-wrote and coproduced seven tracks on the disc), singer Sky Ferreira (heard on “Die Waiting”), guitar master Jason Falkner, keyboardistsinger Roger Manning, Jr.,

Coldplay singer Chris Martin (heard on the wonderful “Stratosphere”), and a cast of others. The majority of songs mine probing moodscapes with musical dexterity and emotional depth. The highlight on the album is the Americanatinged disc closer “Everlasting Nothing,” but the future of the sonic-sphere is heard more forcefully on the dreamy “See Through,” luxurious “Chemical,” blues/electronica/rap mashup “Saw Lightning,” confessional “Dark Places” and undeniable single “Uneventful Days.” Information: beck.com. Artist: Tim Buckley Title: Live at the Electric Theatre Co. Chicago, 1968 (Manifesto Records) You might like if you enjoy: Tim Buckley, Jeff Buckley Tell me more: Although Tim Buckley died of a heroin overdose at the mere age of 28 in June 1975, he left an enduring legacy as a groundbreaking artist who explored folk, rock, blues, jazz fusion, funk and other styles over his short career. Fans of the late artist have been rewarded with the release of “Live at the Electric Theatre Co. Chicago, 1968,” a collection of 14 acoustic songs recorded over the course of a two-night stint at the venue in May 1968. Described in the liner notes as “works in progress”, the

selections are potent even when heard via this sparse forum where Buckley (on vocals and 12-string guitar) is backed by a bassist and conga player. The lovely “Sing a Song For You,” haunting “Danang,” a cover of the Helen Deutsch/Bronislaw Kaper co-write “Hi Lily, Hi Lo” (the latter bolstered by Buckley’s high-reaching falsetto vocals), a terrific take of Johnny Cash’s “Big River” and the intoxicating “Gypsy Woman” are highlights on disc one; his renditions of Fred Neil’s “Dolphins” and “Looks Like Rain,” as well as his own “Happy Time” and “The Father Song” shine on disc two. “Live at the Electric Theatre Col. Chicago, 1968” includes liner notes about the Chicago shows along with remembrances from Buckley collaborators songwriter Larry Beckett and guitarist Lee Underwood. Information: manifesto.com. Record Store Day’s Black Friday Releases Artist: Paul McCartney Title: In A Hurry / Home Tonight Tell me more: The swirling psychedelic-meets-Baroque pop gem “In A Hurry” and infectious “Home Tonight” are featured on a forthcoming Paul McCartney double A-side single set for release on Nov. 29, 2019 as part of Record Store Day’s Black Friday. “In A Hurry” is the more interesting

of the tracks, with its artful build and the use of creative background vocals and diverse instrumentation. The poppy “Home Tonight” recalls some of McCartney’s ‘70s folk rockers and is as catchy as anything he has recorded in recent years. Fans of McCartney’s 2018 “Egypt Station” will enjoy adding these memorable tracks to their library. An important note: only 12,000 copies of the 7-inch vinyl picture disc will be distributed worldwide at brickand-mortar music retailers on Nov. 29; it will be very difficult to score a copy of the colorful single to be sure. Information: RecordStoreDay.com. Artist: New Riders of the Purple Sage Title: Thanksgiving in New York City (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: the Grateful Dead, Gram Parsons Tell me more: Recorded live at the Academy of Music in New York City on Nov. 23, 1972, New Riders of the Purple Sage’s “Thanksgiving in the City” should be on every music lover’s Black Friday shopping list. The two-disc release serves as both a perfect introduction and an essential addition for those seeking to discover – or learn more – about the legendary American country psychedelic rock band. There

is a winning spirit displayed across the recording, with great lead and harmony vocals and top-tier musicianship coming in the service of great strong country- and Americana-styled rock songs. The tender “Leaving on Her Mind,” freewheeling take on the classic “Hello Mary Lou,” lovely “Contract” and “Linda,” a wistful cover of “Long Black Veil” and stylish reworking of the Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women” are among this writer’s favorite tracks on the collection. Speedy guitar work courtesy of lead guitarist-vocalist David Nelson and pedal steel player Buddy Cage (as evidenced on “Henry”) are among the draws on a terrific collection, but the nuanced work provided by rhythm guitarist-vocalist John Dawson, bassist-vocalist Dave Torbert and drummer Spencer Dryden add to the power of the New Riders of the Purple Sage’s timeless sound. Information: OmnivoreRecording.com. In addition to “Thanksgiving in New York City,” Los Angelesbased Omnivore Recordings’ other Record Store Day/ Black Friday releases include the previously-unreleased Alex Chilton cut “My Rival” (recorded in 1975 and engineered by Big Star cofounder Chris Bell) and a vinyl Christmas single from the Peter Holsapple Combo. Judie Cothrun has been selected as the recipient of The 2019 Brinton Child Advocacy Award, and she will be honored that evening. with children. She initially volunteered and worked in Napa with kids who were on probation and who could not attend public school. This led her to obtain her Teaching credential, working with high school students. Upon moving to the desert and retiring from teaching in 1990, Cothrun learned about Olive Crest through some very dear friends, Karen and Jack Whittemore, who helped raise funds to build safe houses for these at-risk children. Cothrun became inspired by the amazing Olive Crest services and programs available to at-risk children and their families. As she explains it, she was blessed with an unexpected inheritance that her Mom left her, so she decided

to give back explicitly to children in need or at-risk. “Dr. Brinton and I are so pleased to give this year’s Brinton Child Advocacy Award to Judie Cothrun, a person with a giving heart, especially where at-risk children are concerned,” stated Lorraine Brinton. “Judie has been giving to Olive Crest since she moved to the desert many years ago – she is a true philanthropist,” she continued. The Brinton Child Advocacy Award is named in honor of Dr. and Mrs. James Brinton, Founders of the Desert Communities Region of Olive Crest. Jim and Lorraine Brinton’s personal commitment to the Olive Crest mission has been unwavering through the years of devoted advocacy

for children. Each year, Dr. and Mrs. Brinton, with a select committee, choose an honoree who they believe best exemplifies this same commitment to children. Individual event tickets are $ 175.00 per person, and sponsorship opportunities are available. For additional information and/or event reservations, please visit www.olivecrest.org/ vivalasvegas2019 or contact Vanessa Espinoza at 760848-0227 or at vanessaespinoza@olivecrest.org. ABOUT OLIVE CREST Since 1973, Olive Crest has transformed the lives of over 130,000 abused, neglected, and at-risk children and their families. Olive Crest works tirelessly

Put Some Stoke In Your Stocking

Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff The holidays can be a stressful time. From family events or planning your own gathering to finding the perfect gift for your loved ones, it seems like there is never enough time. This year, instead of going from store to store scouring for

inspiration and slowly checking off your gift list, consider these ideas from Harley-Davidson that go the extra mile. Give the gift of a first ride: Surprise the child in your life with a modern twist on a classic holiday gift: an ultimate bike experience to give him or her time and exercise outdoors.

For example, the IRONe12 and IRONe16 electric balance bikes can be a perfect learning tool for hand-eye coordination to help a child develop skills while having fun. He or she can learn to push, balance and coast in the non-powered mode before graduating to a powered mode to learn an

understanding of the brake and throttle. This gift can provide a one-of-a-kind learning experience and spark a lifetime love for riding on two wheels. For the “makers in your life: The holidays are an opportunity to build memories with family and friends, but this year you can give them the opportunity to build something else with an option like the LEGO Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Kit. This set provides an immersive building experience while showcasing a reallife motorcycle to give the joy of a kid opening a new favorite toy. This gift can be a perfect selection for someone of any age who loves the experience of building and completing a project. Fashion-forward finds: Give a gift that keeps your loved ones looking good and feeling confident by gifting stylish apparel. For example, flannels and plaid shirts can keep them warm and toasty this holiday season while also adding flair for men and women. With a variety of color and style options, you can find the right fit for everyone on your list. For those looking to give a more luxurious present, the Wild Distressed Leather

Biker Jacket for women and the Digger Leather Jacket for men are options. For those on the go: Whether commuting to work or hitting the road, your loved one may feel like going on an adventure every time he or she leaves the house with and option like the useful Waxed Canvas Backpack. The backpack is water-resistant with an interior padded laptop sleeve and wide comfortable straps. The waxed canvas and heavy gauge leather provide a unique look and durability. Give the gift of a new adventure: There’s always that one friend or family member who already has everything under the sun. Instead of stressing to find the perfect tangible item this year, give an adventurous experience he or she is likely to remember for years to come. For example, the Harley-Davidson Riding Academy New Rider Course is a unique option to give the thrill seeker in your life confidence riding on two wheels in just one weekend. Spruce Up Your Guestroom for the Holidays

Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff The holidays are typically a time for lots of merriment and cheer. They also often include an abundance of guests visiting your home, which means it’s time to get the guestroom ready for family and friends who’ll be spending time with you this season. If sprucing up your guestroom induces panic, fear not. Consider these easy tips to help transform your guestroom into a comfortable and restful retreat. Clean and Clear: The first step in creating a welcoming get-away for guests is giving the room a good cleaning and clearing out clutter. If your guestroom has become a catch-all for items you’ve been meaning to organize throughout the year, the arrival of guests (such as in-laws) can serve as the perfect motivator to take care of the task. For a painless approach, start

the process a few weeks in advance, devoting 15 minutes a day to clutter-busting and cleaning. Make sure you remember to leave room for guests to unpack any luggage and free up outlets for cell phone chargers and other devices they may bring along. Home is Where the Hairdryer Is: While fancy furniture and decor are nice, a gracious guestroom is about hospitality and anticipating the needs of your guests. Think about useful necessities provided in hotel rooms –a reading lamp by the bed, extra hangers in the closet, an alarm clock, fresh sheets and towels and sometimes even a hair dryer. These are items you likely already own. Simply add them to the guest bedroom or bathroom to create a thoughtfully appointed home away from home. To take it up a notch, provide extra toiletries such

as toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, soap and other necessities in case your visitors left something behind. Comfort is King (or a Queen or Twin): Few

things make guests feel more comfortable and cared for than being able to get a good night’s sleep, and that can start with your mattress. The guestroom mattress is often overlooked because you’re not the one sleeping on it. Give the mattress a good inspection. If it has lumps and bumps or is more than 7 years old, it’s time to replace it. For an easy solve, the sleep specialists at a retailer like Mattress Firm can help you find the best mattress for your needs, and the holidays can be a great time to catch the best deals. Also remember to check the pillows to ensure your guests don’t have to endure any sleepless nights with flat, lumpy pillows that are past their prime. Focus on Functional: Because your guests may not conform to the same schedule as you, ensure the early risers and night owls have things at their disposal to stay occupied while others

are sleeping. Reading lights, a photo frame that includes the Wi-Fi password so your guests can easily connect their smart devices, and a television in the room are all accommodations that are typically universally accepted. You may also consider leaving coffee and snack options in an easily accessible location in the kitchen. Thoughtful Touches Add Up: Take time to add some thoughtful yet affordable touches to the room. Consider a small vase of fresh flowers, a scented candle, some subtle holiday decorations or even a few of your favorite magazines and books. If you really want to wow your guests, leave a small gift basket of snacks along with a handwritten welcome note. She said many teens are desperate for information, and pointed out many feel they can’t ask their parents or other trusted adults questions about sexuality. “Cause they’re certainly not getting it in their public school systems and in their homes, and what they are having access to in large part is very fear-based, very shame-based and not helpful, and honestly pretty traumatizing - certainly can be, especially for queer folks and people who are already marginalized,” Turner said. Research has shown that when sex education includes information about contraception, teens are less likely to become pregnant compared to those who receive abstinence-only or no sex education. According to federal data, Kentucky ranks among the top five states in the country for teens births.

5 Financial Tips for Teens By Desert Star Staff When it comes to economics, many teens’ mouths write checks their knowledge can’t cash. While 93% of American teens say they know how the economy works, 29% have had no economic schooling, according to a survey of 1,000 U.S. teens ages 13-18 by Wakefield Research on behalf of Junior Achievement and the Charles Koch Foundation. Even in light of their false confidence, teens are aware of the importance of financial education. Although the study identified numerous gaps in economic and financial knowledge, it also showed teens do know where to look for credible information. Two-thirds (67%) recognize they should use their school as a resource. “One of the things we hear often is that some textbooks are written too academically for most students to understand the concepts,” said Jack E. Kosakowski, president and CEO of Junior Achievement USA. “Our programs, which work as a complement to the school curriculum, are written from the perspective of today’s

teens and use digital content to help bring economic concepts to life for students.” Beyond the classroom, another 63% of students believe they should use their parents as resources for economics education. Help influence the financial literacy of a teen in your life with these practical moneymanagement tips adapted from the curriculum. Set goals. Managing your money is more meaningful when you’re doing it with purpose. This might mean budgeting to ensure you have enough money to maintain your auto insurance and keep gas in your car, or you may be saving for a big senior trip. Knowing what you want to achieve with your money can help you plan how you spend it more wisely. Weigh needs vs. wants. When you begin making your own money, it’s easier to indulge your own wishes and spend money on things you don’t necessarily need. To some extent, that’s not a bad thing; rewarding yourself is fine when you do so within reason. That means not exceeding your available funds, and not forsaking things you truly need, like gas money to get

to and from a job or school. Get a debit card. Most people find that having cash on hand makes it easier to spend. If you use a debit card instead, you’re an extra step away from spending so you have a little more time to consider your purchase. Another benefit of a debit card is it helps track your purchases in real time so you can keep constant tabs on your balance and ensure you don’t overdraft your account.

Start a savings habit. Even if your income doesn’t allow for much, it’s a good idea to get in the habit of setting aside a portion of each check. It may only be $10, but over time each $10 deposit can build your account toward a long-range goal. Protect your privacy. Teens who’ve grown up in the digital age tend to be less skeptical and cautious about privacy matters than their elder counterparts. It’s

important that young people understand the potential impact of failing to protect their privacy when it comes to financial matters, including the possibility that their identities could be stolen and all of their money siphoned away. Teaching kids about security is an essential lesson in economics. Visit ja.org for more tips and information to help raise your teen’s financial literacy. Family Features

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Unpaid family caregivers in California volunteer 4 billion

hours of their time, and perform work valued at $63 billion each year, according to a recent report from AARP.

The Golden State, with almost 40 million residents, has 4.7 million caregivers who help adult friends or

relatives with limitations in their daily activities. Blanca Castro, advocacy director for AARP California, says her organization believes lawmakers should require employers to allow workers more flexible schedules and paid time off when they’re caring for an older adult. “Policymakers need to give people more time during their workday and not have to take vacation time or sick time to take care of a loved one,” she states. California is a leader in supporting caregivers. Last year, state lawmakers raised the amount workers are paid while on family leave. And a 2015 law requires that hospitals train caregivers for tasks such as cleaning wounds, giving medications or moving a person from wheelchair to bed, so that newly-released patients don’t end up back in the hospital. Castro says a good next step would be to allow

licensed nurse practitioners to work without being under contract from a doctor. That would help with the shortage of medical professionals in some areas, and could allow more home care visits. “We are the only state in the western region that still requires the nurse practitioner to have a contract with one physician in order to practice, and that really limits access to health care,” she points out. The AARP report is part of a series known as Valuing the Invaluable. It found that in 2017, about 41 million family caregivers in the U.S. provided 34 billion hours of care. The estimated economic value of their unpaid contributions annually is $470 billion. Disclosure: AARP California contributes to our fund for reporting on Health Issues, Senior Issues.

CA Unpaid Caregivers’ Work Valued at $63 Billion per Year

A new report warns the U.S. will continue to see a shortage of caregivers as the population ages and families are smaller. It says by 2030, there will be only four potential family caregivers for every person over age 80, compared to seven in 2010. (AARP)

Biggest art robbery since WW2: How 2 thieves snatched priceless jewelry

By Desert Star Staff An incredibly audacious jewel heist was mounted on a German treasure trove in Dresden in the early hours of Monday. Here’s what we know of how the brazen theft unfolded, right under the security team’s noses. The smash and grab In the early hours of Monday, two thieves forced their way into Dresden’s Green Vault Museum via a grilled window. Security

cameras filmed the pair on their way in, police later said. Bild reports that the thieves cut the power to local street lighting by damaging a nearby supply box before making their entry. However, although police have acknowledged that power went out in the neighborhood at around 5am local time because of a fire at the supply box, it has not been confirmed that this is definitely linked to the robbery.

Once inside, the thieves ignored larger items and focused on the collection’s impressive and immensely valuable gemstones, smashing their way into the display cases to snatch an array of historical jewelry and making a swift escape back out through that same window. The alarm is raised The security service was actually in the building during the theft, according to Marion Ackermann, director-general of

Dresden State Art Collections. It was they who registered the robbery and raised the alarm. Police said that the alarm sounded at 4.59am local time and that officers were on the scene five minutes later. However, despite the quick reaction, the response came too late: the burglars had already fled the scene along with at least three sets of priceless jewelry, including diamonds and rubies. Within minutes of arriving at the museum, police found signs that a getaway vehicle was used by the perpetrators. A burnt-out car found a few miles from the scene may be the vehicle in question, the police chief told local media, but this has yet to be confirmed. The ‘Green Vault’ The thieves targeted a priceless collection of 18th century jewelry, gems and elaborate trinkets known as the ‘Green Vault’ and housed in the Grand Palace, Dresden. The pieces were collected by the ruler of Saxony, August the Strong, who set out to create an elaborate showcase of brilliant gems and valuable artworks.

The value of the items stolen could be up to €1 billion, according to Bild. One of the most iconic and prized pieces of the collection, the 41-carat Dresden ‘Green Diamond,’ is currently on loan to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and thus escaped any threat from Monday’s heist. What could happen to the haul Some major heists, such as the theft of an enormous 100kg 24-carat gold coin from Berlin’s Bode Museum in 2017, are believed to result in the artwork being quickly melted down or broken up for easier transportation and sale. In Dresden, the museum’s senior staff noted that it would be obviously impossible to sell such unique, identifiable items as those stolen from the Green Vault on the open market. However, they added it would be “terrible” if the thieves are tempted to break up the pieces given their historical and cultural significance. “We are talking here of objects of immeasurable cultural value,” museum director Dirk Syndram told reporters.

Trump warns journalists to keep quiet during WH event By Desert Star Staff During a ceremony to honor Conan — the dog who famously helped take down Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi — Donald Trump warned the press corps that the hero canine was “trained to attack if you open your mouth.” The US president introduced Conan at the White House ceremony on Monday as “probably the world’s most famous dog” before issuing the warning to reporters, who he said would “want to be very, very careful.” He recalled the “flawless attack” on al-Baghdadi who was reportedly chased into a tunnel by Conan before blowing himself up in Syria last month. Helping Seniors Avoid Social Isolation over Holidays By Desert Star Staff Nearly half of adult Americans say they feel alone, according to research by the health care provider Cigna, and the holidays can exacerbate that loneliness. But there are ways South Dakotans can help. Kristin Fox is the director of Senior Companions of South Dakota, a program that matches volunteers with people over 55 who need in-home

assistance and respite care. As the days grow shorter and temperatures plunge, Fox says many seniors – especially those who live in rural areas – can feel left out. “It is a hard time for a lot of people, but especially with seniors who are perhaps isolated already,” Fox points out. “So, I would suggest whatever it takes to get out and about and continue being part of the community.”

In addition to volunteering, experts recommend group exercise classes, book clubs, visiting libraries, museums and places of worship, as ways to avoid isolation. Fox adds that the holidays also are a good excuse to call loved ones and catch up, and to make self-care a priority. Folks who volunteer for the Senior Companions program can help their clients prevent or delay long-term care November 27, 2019

placement and increase their ability to live independently, according to Fox, and those who are served also report reduced stress levels. “Families are busy, and even if there is family nearby, it’s hard to always be there for that loved one,” she states. “So, just knowing that their companion is coming to visit on Tuesday afternoons can just really make a difference.” Fox says the Senior

Companion program serves 60 individuals across South Dakota, and there’s a big waiting list in Sioux Falls and Rapid City for those who would like a companion. Volunteers receive an hourly stipend, mileage reimbursement and other benefits. Information about how to apply for the program is available on the Good Samaritan Society website. www.desertstarweekly.com

Musings from the 2019 NYC American Theatre Critics Association Conference

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association I’ve noticed a trend lately in our ever-changing theatre scene that states in the playbill/programs that “This production will be performed without an intermission.” It appears to be a sign of the times indicating that budgetary issues are definitely impacting not only the subject matter of stories being written by playwrights, but also the size of the casts employed by producers as a result. Is it a harbinger and sign of the times? It certainly looks like it. The fate of the three and two acts play structures over the last 75 years, (unless one was watching a Shakespearean play that told its story in 5 acts back in its day) is likely to be as relevant in today’s theatre productions as a buggy whip. It’s difficult to actually pinpoint when producers introduced the “90 minute” production concept; ranging in cast size from the “twohander” to casts up to six characters, but it’s been at least ten years by my count. Today’s American society in general have short attention spans. We are an instant gratificationdriven society. We want everything and we want it now! “Immediate seating, no waiting” is music to our ears, be it entertainment or dinning choices. Alas, it’s no wonder we’re constantly stressed out much to the delight of the pharmaceutical industry. I believe our playwrights and theatre professionals deserve much better than this. The American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) usually holds its New York City Broadway visit event in late October/ early November to coincide with its member conference and plays availability from Broadway producers. This year’s conference was short and sweet. It ran from November 1st thru November 3rd. Not much time for the average person to see many plays, however, theatre critics thrive www.desertstarweekly.com

on overdosing and binge reviewing as many plays as possible within that short window of opportunity. To wit: I saw three productions in that time span and each one as it turned out was performed without an intermission; running approximately 85 to 90 minutes. A perfect time frame for the current state of today’s theatre-going audience demographic choices. And I still had time to attend an all-day session of panels and discussion groups. How do we do it you wonder? Ah, that’s the mystery and the magic of the theatre. In order of the productions seen and reviewed, “Betrayal”, by Sir Harold Pinter is a must see show for Pinter fans. Its devilishly written dialogue and non-linear plot is deftly performed by a terrific cast of actors led by British leading man Tom Hiddleston as writer Robert, husband of Emma, a sultry Zamwe Ashton, and Charlie Cox as Jerry, Robert’s agent and best friend and the other man in this love triangle production. Eddie Arnold, lends solid support as the Waiter and performs other yeoman duties as well. Harold Pinter, in a moment of complete candor said he based this play on his own marriage woes involving infidelity and betrayal as the key components. The powerful production, exquisitely directed by Jaime Lloyd, features strong emotional content mixed with achingly poignant moments of truth and boldness as it explores the rush that sex and infidelity sometimes, for some, can inject into a marriage. The stark, minimal set design by Soutra Gilmour, matches and achieves director Lloyd’s vision on how best to capture Pinter’s edgy and all-so-civilized-sophisticated drama. The characters are playing with dynamite which almost always leads to one or all in the triangle being forever scarred and even destroyed. The timing and pacing may appear glacial at times, but this non-linear play is so compellingly well-acted by this cast that it keeps one engaged and on our toes

until the payoff moment that is so Pinter-esque. The sex triangle characters are fully formed adults who know what they’re buying into when the play begins, but we the audience, must wait to find out how it all sorts out. And it’s all accomplished in less than 90 minutes. The second play reviewed was the Irish Repertory Theatre production of Conor McPherson’s self-loathing melodrama “Dublin Carol”. The Irish Rep Company has a fabulous reputation of bringing the light and dark side of Celtic heritage to its productions that celebrates the many styles of story-telling yarns for which the Irish are famous. “Dublin Carol” is a penetrating portrait of Irish culture with a leitmotif of alcohol addiction, guilt, remorse, and redemption running rampant throughout its 89 minutes of the stage performance. Needless to say, it’s not an O’Casey-like comedy. But, it is an ever so brilliant tour de force performance by Jeffrey Bean, as Dublin funeral parlor employee John Plunket who is constantly warring with his demons that will not stop coming out of the Jamieson whiskey bottles he keeps in his cupboard. The play set in Dublin on Christmas Eve in 1999, centers around John’s relationship with his estranged daughter Carol (Sarah Street) who has not spoken to her father in eleven years who now suddenly shows up on his doorstep to inform him that her mother is dying of cancer. Carol has a love/hate relationship with her father. She wants to have a closer family relationship, but she can’t bring herself to forgive him for his “abandoning” of the family years ago. Guilt is the powerful enabler and the enemy of remorse and redemption. No character feels that pang more acutely than John. The nephew of John’s friend is a young Dublin lad of twenty named Mark - who has recently joined the family funeral business - is nicely November 27, 2019

played by Cillian Hegarty. His purpose is to help flesh out the deeply held emotions and insecurities of John as sort of a sympathetic ear and shoulder for John to lean on when the “urge” to enjoy the comfort of those Jamieson whiskey bottles become too strong to resist. The Irish aren’t considered as having the “gift of the gab” for nothing. “Dublin Carol” is a talky play. The beauty of the production, however, lies on the performance of Jeffrey Bean as John. It’s a tribute to Bean’s talent, experience and stamina if nothing else. He’s on that stage for about 80 of its total 89 minutes. It’s an astonishing performance. The last production reviewed in this three- mini review piece is “The Height of the Storm”, written by French playwright Florian Zeller, with an English translation by Tony and Oscar awardwinning author/playwright Christopher Hampton. The 2018 Olivier Awardwinning play stars British theatre legends Eileen Atkins and Jonathan Pryce in two riveting star-turn performances as an aging couple of some 50 plus years of marriage who find themselves needing one another more than ever as the medical term of “dementia” begins to rear its ugly head. Playwright Zeller is a huge fan of playwriting Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter, which accounts for the echoes of Pinter-like plotting, the opaqueness of structure, the content, and the style so associated with Pinter plays. For example, the

audience, at the beginning, isn’t quite sure whether the characters of Andre (Jonathan Pryce) and Madeleine (Eileen Atkins) are even alive as characters. They are seen interacting with their two daughters Anne (Amanda Drew) and Elise (Lisa O’Hare). But they too may even be ghosts or perhaps, figures of the imaginations of the other on-stage family members, as well as two non-family visitors: The Woman (Lucy Cohu) a woman who claims to be from Andre’s past whom he doesn’t recognize or knows, along with The Man (James Hillier) the boyfriend of Elise; all of whom meet and interact with one another. Confusing? You bet. One thing we know for sure is that either Andre or Madeleine must be deceased. Which one passed first is revealed at the end. Everyone else appears to be caught in a dream, and/or in denial. Frankly, even for me, a Pinter fan, Zeller has tossed in too many red herrings into his French onion soup that lacks clarity and cohesion. I’m not sure if the play’s clarity problems lies in the original French version or in Hampton’s English translation. Regardless of clarity concerns of the story directed by Jonathan Kent, one cannot deny the power and precision of the performances of Jonathan Pryce and Eileen Atkins. These two stars possess the talent and acting chops to still knock your socks off, along with solid support from this impressive ensemble cast.
