Cabot’s Museum Tours

A whole new experience begins December 1st By Desert Star Staff Desert Hot Springs - More than 70 years ago Cabot Yerxa started building his Pueblo as a tourist attraction. People coming to the Coachella Valley were told to see the self-described DesertRat up on Miracle Hill because he told the best stories and had the most unique items for sale in his Trading Post. For the price of an admission ticket guests were taken inside and told stories of ever-changing life in the Valley. Beginning December 1, 2014, visitors can take the new Cabot’s Pueblo Museum Signature Tour

– a new experience that includes seeing rooms not previously open to the public as well as incredible new insights into the man many believe is responsible for putting the Coachella Valley on the map. Few have left as indelible a legacy in the Coachella Valley as Cabot Yerxa. He discovered the mineral springs. He was a friend to the Native Americans in the area. He was the first sustainable builder using only reclaimed, recycled or reused materials in the construction of his 5,000 square foot pueblo. He believed in helping his neighbors and strangers alike.

He brought Hollywood celebrities to the desert. He helped layout – and build - the streets of Desert Hot Springs. And so much more. At 15 he started traveling the world, but Cabot the adventurerhumanitarian made the Coachella Valley his home. And it is the lovely place to live and tourist destination it is today because he did. Cabot’s Pueblo Museum is open, and the Signature Tour, offered Tuesday through Sundays, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission is $9-$11. Group tours available. For information visit CabotsMuseum. org or call (760) 329-7610.

Three Ways to Give the Holiday Season More Meaning By Desert Star Staff These days, the focus of the holidays is often on consumerism -- from gift cards to glitzy décor to formal place settings. Whatever your religious beliefs, you may be looking for ways to incorporate more spirituality into the season and beyond. Here are three ways to bring more meaning to the season: • Skip the gift exchange. Instead of purchasing pricey presents for family and friends, do a letter exchange instead. Take the opportunity to tell loved ones what they mean to you. These notes of appreciation will be a lot more memorable and a lot more meaningful than a store bought

item. The money you would have spent on gifts can be donated to your favorite charity instead. • Volunteer. The winter can be an especially difficult time for the elderly, the hungry or the sick. While it may be a particularly busy time of year for you, try to dedicate some time in your schedule to a volunteer project that helps you connect with others in your community. • Be introspective. There is plenty of great literature available that can help you explore your own spirituality. One new title, “Coming Home, A Spiritual and Religious Dialogue,” by Star Chang, who has studied religious scriptures, history and spiritual books for years, delves

into the teachings of the likes of Buddha, Jesus, Plato and Muhammad. The book seeks to help readers navigate their own path by discovering which teachings apply to them and how to incorporate them into a modern lifestyle. This reading can be especially beneficial to those looking for more meaning around the holiday season. More information about the book can be found at www. BookComingHome.com. While there is certainly great joy to be had by getting swept up in the spirit of the holiday season, taking time to reflect and be of service to others can give this time of year even more meaning and importance. S P O RT S Hawkins and Miller Shine for Indians in CIF Quarterfinals BY DANIEL MARINELLI

HESPERIA – If you have paid attention to high school football in the Coachella Valley this season you know the Palm Springs Indians are loaded with talented athletes. One night it could be quarterback Will Olvera leading the team to victory, another night it could be two-way (offense and defense) receiver Riley Hagar catching the game-winning touchdowns – and throwing them. On the road in frigid Hesperia last Friday night – with the CIF-SS

desert

Eastern Division semi-finals on the line – offensive centerpieces Franklin Miller and Taylor Hawkins lifted the Indians with their bigtime play making ability. After forcing the Hesperia Scorpions (6-6 overall, 3-2 Mojave River) to punt on the game’s opening possession, Miller received the kick at the Indians’ 45-yard line. Then slipped through, swerved and dodged defenders, sprinting 55 yards, all ending in an electrifying touchdown that set the tone for the rest of the game. The Scorpions were able to answer immediately to tie the game but the Indians, specifically Hawkins, answered right back – twice! The future NCAA athlete found the end zone on a nineyard carry to put Palm Springs up to 14-7. Following a huge fourth-down stop, the elite, do-it-

all, receiver-corner back caught a highlight-reel, 60-yard bomb that put the visitors up to 21-7 before the first quarter had even ended. By this point, it was obvious, the Indians looked like, and were playing like the better team. If they kept their defensive intensity up, all that stood in the way between the DVL’s second seed, and the CIF semis was 36 minutes of game time. In the second quarter, Hesperia managed to score another touchdown to come within eight. Moving the ball with little resistance; however, minutes before the end of the first half, Miller caught his only pass of the game, a 13-yard strike that put the Indians back up 27-13. They were just up to 14 at the game’s midway point but with the Indians’ dominant play through the first two quarters, the latter

“THE BROSQUITOS” Continued from Page 1 can get” I asked the Second lead guitarist named Hamilton a few Questions? How long have you been playing the guitar? He said,” Two to Three Years.” What made you began playing the guitar? He said,”Playing at the Church.” Who is your guitar idol? He said,”George Harrison.’’ Where did you learn how to read music? Hamilton said,” In the School Band.” Few Questions to Max the Base Player. How long have you been playing the Base? He said,” For 5 years, plus I have been in the School Band for seven years. I do know how to read music.’’ Who is your Base player idol? He said,’’Jaco Pastorious a legend.’’

My Questions to Oscar the BrosQuitos Rhythm guitar player. How long have you been playing the guitar? He said, “One to Two years and I learned really fast how to play the guitar.” What do you like about the Band? He said,”I always like music, and the Band played at the Homecoming, and James contact me via Facebook to play in the BrosQuitos Band, I immediately said, “Yes!” My last questions went to Hugo the Drummer; he is the time and beat keeper for the band. How many years have you been playing the drums? He said,” Four years.” Who is your Drummer idol? He said, “Benny Thompson, who is a world-class drummer.” Do you like to practice? November 28, 2014

half figured to be mostly clock management for Dan Murphy’s poised team. Palm Springs opened the second half with possession and took a 17-point lead on a field goal early in the third quarter. The Scorpions did score another touchdown, and giving a slight scare to the away-team faithful, recovered the ensuing onside kick on the first play of the final 12 minutes. Despite giving away an extra possession on the onside kick, the Indians defense did not let Hesperia take advantage, coming up with another fourthdown stop, ending the last serious Scorpions threat. “The (defense) has been coming through for us all year – tonight was no different,” Coach Murphy said. “When we needed a stop, they did what they had to do. I’m extremely proud of them, always am.” The Indians played the type of unrelenting defense it takes to win a CIF championship, and the offense kept up its end of the bargain by scoring when the opportunities were presented. To put the nail in the coffin, Miller carried the ball nine yards for his third touchdown, putting the Indians up by a final of 37-20. With the win, Palm Springs moves on to the semifinals for the first time since 2012 – and the first time under Coach Murphy. “Feels great, it’s a goal we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year, to make a deep run in the playoffs and were fortunate enough to do that,” Coach Murphy said. “The kids played well tonight. Hats off to Hesperia, they have some tough kids who put us in bad situations, but our kids prevailed and did what we wanted them to do.” Miller’s three scores put the

junior at a remarkable 17 total touchdowns on the season. Including his two touchdowns, Hawkins finished the game with 79 yards receiving. Finishing with two passing touchdowns, Olvera ended the night with 148 passing yards. All season long, Palm Springs has used its dynamic passing offense to breeze through the season. Against the scorpions, it was all about the run. In addition to starting running back Israel Gumero, the Indians used Miller, Hawkins and even receiver Ray Mullen as running backs – and with two scores on the ground, it was definitely a difference maker. Up next are the semifinals. The scorching Indians (11-2 overall, 5-1 DVL) take on the Oak Hills Bulldogs (10-2 overall, 5-0 Mojave River), the finest team in the Eastern Division Bracket, and one of the first teams in California. Palm Springs has been rolling but with a match up against the 51st best team in the state, some adjustments will have to be made “We have to fix up some defensive alignments and stuff like that, but the kids were really excited, and they performed well when crunch time came,” Coach Murphy said. “They did what they had to do, so we’ll work on some things, we’ll watch some film, and we’ll go from there. I think we’ll be fine.” A location for this Friday’s game is to be determined but will likely take place at Oak Hills High School in Hesperia. Game starts at 7 pm.

Hugo said,”Yes, It’s like a miniconcert? He smiles.’’ Have you all gone into the studio, yet? His answer, “Yes, and we recorded our first CD in an hour to save money on studio time.’’ What are the names of your Hit Songs? Hugo said,” Limelight, Leaving Me at Night, Break Time, Let’s Go See, and we have a new Single out called, “See Right Through.” Can you tell all the teenagers what kind of music the BrosQuitos play? He said,’’It’s called Modern Alternative, Indie, Rock.’’ I asked, The BrosQuitos Band’s Classmate Clarissa a 12th grader at Desert Hot Springs High School. Have you ever seen The BroQuitos Band Perform? She said, “I have seen them perform live for the first time. They were outstanding. I thought it was amazing to see them because those are

people I go to school with and to see them reach this far, it’s incredible.’’ What do you think of The BrosQuitos Band for the future? She said, “I believe they will get far. I mean everyone at school supports and is helping them out in any way possible. I think they have a great shot on becoming successful in the long run. I’m glad to see them achieve their dreams.’’ Finally, what message can you all send to the teenagers around the World, in the United States, Desert Hot Springs, and Europe? The BrosQuitos said,” If you are not willing to practice, this is not or might not be the thing for you, and you are not committed to your craft. Our Desert Hot Springs Middle School Band Teacher Mr.Garry Cobles taught all of us perfect practice makes perfect.’’

Palm Springs Art Museum In Palm Desert Swings Into Season By Pamela Price What a sensational night it was at the Third Annual Meet the Galen and the Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden in Palm Desert on Friday evening, from 6-8 pm on November 21st. America’s Swing Era also known as the “big-band band era,” around 1935-1946 brought new names to music from Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey. There were several at our table who mentioned songs where words spun stories, from “Stompin at the Savoy” to “Tuxedo Junction.” And there were quite a few classy gents in tuxedos As Helene Galen and Jamie Kabler greeted arriving guests, many attired in black and

white, the 1940’s swing music selected by DJ Alf Alpha filled the air. Thanks to Jamie Kabler and Susan Stein, Chairman, Art Angels Helene Galen, Donna MacMillan, Harold B. Matzner and Honorary Chairs Lucie Arnez, Larry Luckinbill, Suzanne Sommers and Barry Manilow it was an enchanting interlude under the stars, in step with style. That was evident when guest, John Saachi turned heads with his stunning Christian Louboutin shoes, sporting multi-colored spikes; those are the latest “roller-boat men’s flats,” remarked Grace Robbins, author that was accompanied by Gilbert Holmes and Patrick Mundt.
