By Desert Star Staff After years of dealing with failing health, Fidel Castro, leader of the Cuban revolution who steered the country through decades of a US economic blockade, has died, state media report. Castro died in Havana on Friday at 10:29pm local time, Cuban television said. His death was announced by his brother Raul, who took the reins after Fidel stepped down. “According to the will expressed by comrade Fidel, his body will be cremated,” Raul said.Castro led the country from 1959 to 2006, when an intestinal condition nearly led to his death. He ceded power to his brother first provisionally, and then formally in 2008. In his last years, he mostly stayed out of the public eye,

only occasionally providing commentary on events in Cuba. His passing marks the end of an era for many. Castro was the last remaining leader from the group of old school communist leaders including Chinese Mao Zedong, Korean Kim Il-sung and Soviets Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev. Dictator or national hero, Castro was called many things along the way, as he rose from being a student activist protesting against oppressive regimes to becoming the president of Cuba. In February 1959, the Cuban Revolution brought Castro to power as the prime minister. He was backed by the so-called 26th of July Movement, and Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara.

Together, they managed to oust US-backed President Batista. After failing to maintain ties with Washington, Cuba became isolated from its neighbor as the US chose to cut all trade links with the Caribbean state. In 1961, the island nation fended off a CIA-backed invasion known as the Bay of Pigs. Upon taking office, Castro quickly found a new ally, as the Soviet Union supplied Cuba with arms, cars, and industrial equipment to keep it running. But the nations’ alliance brought more than mutual benefits. Cuba and Russia became key players in the Cuban Missile Crisis – arguably the most dangerous confrontation of the Cold War,

The Argument toward Passive Money Management

By Janice Gough Success investing is a long-term, disciplined, continuous process, in which long-term investors need to maintain calm and ignore short-term price changes. Active funds are run by portfolio managers who attempt to outperform the market by selecting those securities they believe to be the best. Passive management refers to invest in funds that seek to replicate the performance of an underlying index by holding either all securities in the index or a representative sample of the securities in the index.

The current movement of funds toward passive management is an indication of a shift in investment strategies for a majority of investors from high-risk and “high cost” active money management funds to indexed funds. Equity indexed annuities and “low cost” EFTs, exchange-traded funds. These investments guarantee returns over a longer period of time. The goal of an index fund is to track the performance of a specific market benchmark, as closely as possible. That’s why you may hear it referred to as a “passively managed” fund. Some advantages are that broad index funds mostly don’t trade as much as actively managed funds might, so they’re typically generating fewer taxable incomes, which reduces the drag on your investments. Because index funds hold investments until the index, itself changes, they generally have lower management and transaction costs. Some index funds give you exposure to potentially thousands of securities in a single fund. The “revolution” toward passive management has been underway since 1976 when the Vanguard 500 debuted as the first index mutual fund. The trend has been gathering momentum as investors have become impatient with active managers struggling during the seven-year rally to outperform the indexes. By the

end of July 2016, Morningstar coined the phrase, “The Era of Flowmageddon.” This was due to the $328 billion free-flowing out of actively managed U.S. mutual funds, while $401 billion flowed into funds that passively track an index. Hedge funds are also under pressure with $29.2 billion in redemptions in the third quarter, a level not seen since the first quarter of 2009. A striking 18 Morningstar 500 funds suffered outflows of at least 40% of assets under management in the trailing 12 months ended February 2016; 61 shed 25% or additionally, and 168 had outflows of 10% or more. Other considerations toward passive management are that corporations are fighting structural headwinds, due to demographic aging, and technological displacement of jobs, caused by robotization, de-globalization, and over leveraged balance sheets. According to Republicans, America has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world at 35%; however, U.S. corporations rank among the world’s most “lightly,” as opposed to “heavily” taxed, at an average corporate tax rate of 24%. Cutting taxes could only increase profits at the expense of labor. It is believed that a new Trump bull market will be hard to obtain, considering the Trump policies of cutting corporate tax, heavy spending

on infrastructure improvements and defense combined, will not invigorate the private sector, but continue to favor capital versus labor, and markets versus wages. With this in mind, you could respectfully be looking at 3-5% globally diversified returns. Considering how the S&P 500 indexes dropped 37% in 2008, pension funds still had to pay retirement benefits to their retirees, creating a financial hole from which they are conversely digging out. For senior individual investors, too, the speculation of another 2008 fills them with dread because they fear they may not live long enough for their portfolio to recover.

This is why many pension funds and older investors have focused on risk management post-2008, not beating the market. Some pension funds are content with modest but reliable returns that meet their actuarial needs, while many individual investors have moved toward passively managed funds.

Dear C.K.: The association reserve funds should be deposited in a bank account insured by FDIC. Your board acts a fiduciary with respect to those funds, and could held personally liable if the funds are invested and any funds are lost. If your HOA’s account holds over $250,000 (the current FDIC limit), talk to your banker about getting the money protected by having it in multiple accounts. Best, Kelly.

prospective purchasers, as referenced in my response to J.L. above. For the very small association, bluntly, the DavisStirling Act largely does not work. It is too complicated and in many respects unrealistic for very small associations. For example, three unit associations must vote by secret ballot, using inspectors of election, because the law applies to all associations alike. Homebuyers should not expect that very small HOAs will be fully compliant with the Davis-Stirling law, because for the most part they are unaware of its complex requirements. Thanks for your questions, Kelly

Reservations Regarding Reserve Funds

Dear J.L.: There are many statutory requirements regarding reserves, including Civil Code Sections 5550 (reserve study every three years), 5550(a) (annual review of the reserve study), 5560 (a reserve funding plan), 5300(2) (b) (annual distribution of summary of the association’s reserves), 5500 (board quarterly review of reserve accounts and expenditures), and 5570 (detailed annual reserve disclosure). However, no law requires that associations actually put any money in the reserve fund. FannieMae and FHA require condominium projects set aside at least 10% of their budget for reserve contributions, in order to be eligible for their financing. The California Association of Realtors® has been helpful

Kelly: I am a new board member on a well-run condo association. We have several hundred thousand dollars in reserves in FDIC insured CD’s, receiving a very small interest rate. I believe the funds (or at least a part of them) should be invested in an insurance company fund that has paid more interest in recent years. This investment is not insured and so the other board members voted to have the funds stay in the CDs. Is this the normal way of handling reserves? If not, could the board be accused of not acting responsibly in the investments? C.K., West Covina November 30, 2016

Dear Mr. Richardson, In an article you spoke of a reserve summary that needs to be on file. We just had a reserve study completed on our small complex. Your article made it appear that much more than that study is necessary to comply with the law. Is that correct? It does seem that the laws makes the position of HOA board member HOA an almost impossible one to fill, especially in a small association. Can you comment on that also? Sincerely, B.R., Pasadena Dear B.R.: The law requires very detailed written disclosures to the membership and

Can Trump Actually “Put the Miners Back to Work?” “pretending that protecting the environment is the one responsible for this - when in fact, it’s just the marketplace.” Trump has so far given few details on how he plans to put miners back to work. Democratic Governor-elect Jim Justice has made a similar promise, also without much detail. Large-scale coal mining is still going on in West Virginia, and critics point out that environmental damage has hardly slowed. Ted Boettner, executive director at the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy, said his organization expects production to settle at about 40 percent of its most recent peak, about 15 years ago. “It’ll probably level out around 70 million tons, from

a high of about 165 million tons,” Boettner said. “The chances of a rebound, especially in southern West Virginia, are close to zero.” James Van Nostrand, director of the Center for Energy and Sustainable Development at West Virginia University College of Law, said there are ways Trump could loosen regulations on the mining industry, but those are pretty radical steps that would only lower costs a little. “You can abandon the stream-protection rule, you can abandon the Waters of the United States rule, you can have lax enforcement of the MSHA regulations,” Van Nostrand said. “But what’s driving the decline of the coal industry is geology, and it’s economics.”

his promise to put coal miners back to work. (Pixabay) CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Donald Trump has promised

to revitalize the coal industry and put miners back to work, but some political observers say he’s raising false hope. According to the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy, the decline in state coal production is being driven by cheap natural gas, low-cost wind and solar, competition from coal mined in Western states, and the fact that the easy-to-get Appalachian coal is gone. For Walton Shepherd, staff attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, when Trump and local politicians blame a so-called ‘war on coal,’ they’re actually hurting people in the coalfields. “That’s probably the biggest betrayal by some of the elected officials in Appalachia,” Shepherd said,

By Desert Star Staff SANTA FE, N.M. – Advocates with a group called Juntos: Our Air Our Water today are delivering 2,000 petition signatures to the Environment Department asking that the state move toward a clean energy economy and protect public lands despite the election of Donald Trump as president. During the campaign, Trump vowed to pull the U.S. out of the Paris Agreement on climate change and to dismantle the Clean Power Plan and the Waters of the United States rule. The latter puts smaller tributaries under the jurisdiction of the Environmental Protection Agency. Christopher Ramirez, program director for the Our Air Our Water program, says Gov.

Susana Martinez is moving the state in the wrong direction. “She’s talking about nuclear energy and natural gas pipelines, and what we’re concerned about is investment in renewables, solar and wind, not dirty industries,” he states. The petitions ask the governor to implement the Clean Power Plan, even though it is on hold while it’s tied up in court. Petitioners also ask for better community access to public meetings, which in the past have taken place during the workday and without Spanish translation. Our Air Our Water advocates are marching from the State Capitol in Santa Fe to the New Mexico Environment Department to hand in the petitions. New Mexico already is close

to being in compliance with the Clean Power Plan, because conservation groups won a lawsuit to force the closure of two of the four units at the San Juan Generating Station, a coal-fired power plant. Ramirez would also like to see the power company PNM stop buying nuclear power. “Nuclear energy, including the extraction of uranium from places like northwest and western New Mexico are dangerous for the environment and the people in those communities, let alone the disposal of products once they’re used for production of energy,” he stresses. occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, hospice aides, homemakers, and volunteers. A hospice nurse and doctor are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to give you and your family support and care when you need it. You can also include your regular doctor or a nurse practitioner on your medical team to supervise your care. Medicare’s hospice benefit allows you and your family to stay together in the comfort of your home, unless you need care in an inpatient facility. If your hospice provider determines that you need inpatient care, the provider will make arrangements for your stay. To find a hospice provider, talk to your doctor or call your state hospice organization. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization has a website that allows you to look up local providers based

on your zip code, at www. nhpco.org/find-hospice. You can get hospice care if you have Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and you meet these conditions: • Your hospice doctor and your regular doctor (if you have one) certify that you’re terminally ill, with a life expectancy of 6 months or less; • You accept palliative care (for comfort) instead of care to cure your illness; • You sign a statement choosing hospice care instead of other Medicare-covered treatments for your terminal illness and related conditions. You have the right to stop hospice at any time. If you do so, you’ll go back to the type of Medicare coverage you had before you chose a hospice provider, like Original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan, or another type of Medicare health plan. Depending on your illness and related conditions, the plan of care your hospice team creates can include doctor and nursing services; medical equipment (like wheelchairs

and walkers); medical supplies (like bandages and catheters); prescription drugs; hospice aide and homemaker services; physical and occupational therapy; speech-language pathology services; social worker services; dietary counseling; grief and loss counseling for you and your family; short-term inpatient care (for pain and symptom management); and any other Medicare-covered services needed to manage your terminal illness and related conditions, as recommended by your hospice team. Medicare benefits for the terminally ill

By Cate Kortzeborn When I talk to people with Medicare about planning for the end of their lives, the statistic that always strikes me is this: If you ask people where they’d rather die – in a hospital or at home – 75 percent say at home and 25 percent say the hospital. But when you look at what actually happens, only 25 percent of people get to die at home, while 75 percent pass away in hospitals. The only way you can ensure that your doctor understands your wishes is by talking about them. And now, Medicare will reimburse your doctor for that conversation. This is called advance care planning. It’s designed to help people with Medicare learn about various options for end-of-life care; determine which types of care best fit their personal wishes; and share their wishes with their

family, friends, and physicians. One option you can discuss with your doctor is hospice care. Hospice is intended to help terminally-ill people live out their lives as comfortably as possible, usually in their own homes. Hospice doesn’t focus on curing disease and it’s not only for people with cancer. Medicare’s hospice benefit covers your care, and you shouldn’t have to go outside of hospice to get care except in rare situations. Once you choose it, your hospice benefit should cover everything you need. If you qualify for hospice care, you and your family will work with your hospice provider to set up a plan of care that meets your needs. You and your family members are the most important part of your medical team. Your team can also include doctors, nurses or nurse practitioners, social workers, physical and

How Arts and Crafts Can Help Heal Veterans in Your Community

By Desert Star Staff When people hear there might be a bomb nearby, most will try to get as far away as fast as possible. U.S. Army Specialist Brandon Sanford and his bomb-sniffing dog Rexo, however, were not as lucky. Sanford and Rexo were part of the Army’s bomb detection unit, tasked with finding life-threatening explosive devices. “I was nervous on the first patrol missions since our duty was to find explosives designed to kill American soldiers,” said Sanford.

When a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in 2008, Sanford suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), among other wounds. Because of his injuries, Sanford suffers from seizures as well as problems with balance, fine motor skills and more. Basic tasks like buttoning a shirt are now daunting endeavors for him. And so the long, arduous process of healing began. Along with surgery and physical therapy, craft therapy became part of Sanford’s treatment plan. When men and women

return from war or other military postings, they often bring home more than their duffel bags. That is why Help Heal Veterans (Heal Vets), a nonprofit founded during the Vietnam War, operates on the knowledge that not all medicine comes in a bottle. As America’s largest supplier of therapeutic arts and crafts resources, Heal Vets has distributed more than 29 million kits since 1971, averaging 43,000 kits per month. The kits consist of hundreds of craft categories like woodworking, leather, models and a

variety of needlecrafts. Many doctors and occupational therapists prescribe arts and crafts as an important component of a treatment plan. Such an approach provides tremendous therapeutic and rehabilitative benefits, including improving fine motor skills, cognitive functioning, memory and dexterity. Crafts can also help alleviate anger issues and the severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and TBI triggers, such as anxiety, memories, sadness and frustration. In some cases, the benefits are physical as well. For example, stringing together a leather craft might help with hand-eye coordination and dexterity. Painting or model building can ease symptoms of PTSD or depression. Sanford said that working with small pieces has helped him with his hand-eye coordination. He also suffers from short-term memory problems associated with his TBI, so working on the kits helps train his focus and concentration skills. Since World War I, craft kits have consistently proven effective tools for veterans’ rehabilitation and healing. According to a Health

Flint Water Crisis Offers Lesson to Other Communities By Desert Star Staff The lesson learned in the water crisis in Flint, Mich., is that it could happen in Indiana, or anywhere. (cityofflint.com) LEBANON, Ind. – One of the women who has played a leading role in bringing international visibility to the drinking water crisis in Flint, Mich., brought her message to Indiana over the weekend. Melissa Mays, founder of the advocacy group Water You Fighting For, is traveling the country telling people to make sure the water the government is providing is clean and not filled with cancer-causing toxins. Mays was the keynote speaker at the Greening the Statehouse conference in Boone County. She says in Flint, city officials failed to treat the water with corrosion inhibitors,

which would have prevented aging drinking water pipes from leaching toxins into the water. Some 12,000 children were exposed to excessive amounts of lead because of that. “What’s been done to us has opened the eyes of the rest of the country, and I want people to know that, that I hope you don’t go something where officials made the wrong decision on your water treatment, but it is happening in many different cities across the world,” she states. The Hoosier Environmental Council, which sponsored the event, says Indiana is increasingly becoming aware of its own environmental challenges, including an ongoing lead contamination crisis in East Chicago, a disproportionately large number

of coal ash lagoons posing risks to drinking water in lowincome urban and rural areas, and not enough oversight from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Mays says two and a half years after the discovery of the water crisis in Flint, residents still don’t have clean water, but she says her message to people in other cities is that people can fight back. “We’re all just a bunch of regular people that just happened to find out that we were being poisoned and decided it was time to stand up and fight back,” she states. “And we’ve actually been able to push back on the government, which is unheard of in most cases. “ On Friday the Environmental Protection Agency said Flint will

have to treat and test drinking water from a new Lake Huron pipeline for at least three months before providing it to residents. Mays says in the meantime,

you see this big gap,” Yee said. “There were a lot more votes that were cast for Democratic candidates than are reflected in their share of the congressional delegations for southern states.” The Washington Post recently designated North Carolina’s 12th Congressional District the most gerrymandered district in the country. It stretches from north of Greensboro to Winston-Salem and all the way down to Charlotte. The Fourth District, covering Raleigh and Burlington, and the First District, covering the northeastern part of the state, also made the top ten in the nation. The Institute for Southern Studies looked at all the Southern states, Yee said, but North Carolina stood out. “North Carolina is one of

the states that has had the most egregious examples of this, at the House level and also at the state legislative level,” she said. “And that’s gone to court, that’s gone to litigation and so, there’s a big push in the state right now to do nonpartisan redistricting.” Earlier this year, a nonpartisan panel of retired North Carolina justices and judges released a suggested congressional map for North Carolina to demonstrate how redistricting might work. The panel created 13 districts based on geography only, without regard to party affiliation. If put in place, it is estimated that six of those districts would be Republican, four Democrat and three would be in play. Currently, there are 10 Republican districts in the state.

Report: Gerrymandering Impacted NC Election Results

Earlier this year, a nonpartisan panel of justices and judges created a district map of North Carolina that mostly considered geography. (Duke University) By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. – As the recount of votes in the November election continues in the Tar Heel State, a report from the Institute for Southern Studies has found that gerrymandering continues to impact the

outcome of North Carolina’s state and national races. In the recent election, Democrats comprised 47 percent of voters, but only 23 percent of elected seats. The analysis was prepared by the Institute for Southern Studies. Allie Yee, associate

director with the organization, said the end result is an inaccurate representation of the state’s electorate. “If you look at the congressional delegation and the number of votes that went to Democratic candidates versus Republican candidates,

The US government has always been open about its feelings toward communist Cuba. It remains unknown how many times the CIA tried to assassinate Castro, but some Cuban officials set the number as high as 600. This figure includes the notorious incident when Castro’s cigarettes were found to be stuffed with explosives. After passing power to his brother Raul, Fidel was still considered the main moral authority in Cuba. Occasionally, he also met with foreign

dignitaries like Pope Francis in 2015 and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill in February. Under Raul’s leadership, Cuba has experienced a slow transformation as he has introduced some marketstyle economic reforms in the largely socialist country. He also agreed to restore diplomatic ties with the United States in December, taking a step away from decades of rivalry. Fidel was skeptical about the rapprochement, but did not oppose it.

Then be sure to attend the 2017 National Association of Television Programming Executives (NAPTE) convention held Jan. 17-19 at the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc hotels in Miami’s famous South Beach. Take your TV series, pilots, story ideas and story boards with you because the attending 5,000 NATPE television executives need to reach audiences – and that need has never been greater than now! With video-on-demand platforms, pay TV services

and free-to-air broadcasters all active in commissioning programs, it’s easy to miss the new shows hitting the market. As one key network drama executive says, “It’s my job to know all that’s out there but I cannot know all in this kind of market.” Get your stuff in front of the people that matter. This conference is the fastest way to meet those who do drive the television industry, and who actually make decisions. While reality TV shows have commanded the

stage for the past ten years, newer shows that appeal to broader audiences are making a splash. Their new show “Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party,” premiered on VH1 to 2.3 million viewers and was the top premiere for a new cable unscripted franchise this year. What’s their secret ingredient? Go to the conference and find out. While there be a part of three new keynote platforms during the threeday conference. Get inspired and build relationships with

By Desert Star Staff Today, rising Los Angeles based singer-songwriter Katherine Kadenacy, who goes by XMeKate has released her debut single ‘Cigarettes’ produced by Andrés Rebellón (Marina & The Diamonds).

Comprised of a unique blend of electro pop, Indie and alternative genres, Kate’s heavy, haunting lyrics float seamlessly within the lightness of the melody. Together, the two crafted a track that is both universal and achingly personal. “Cigarettes”, the first single from her upcoming EP Expectation, is the first song that Kate and Andres

worked together on. It tells the story of Kate’s first heartbreak, and how the first girl she ever fell for ended up cheating on her with a boy. Kadenacy, who is of Italian and Greek descent, had a bicultural upbringing that was a major influence in developing her aesthetic, which draws from Greek mythology and classic literature. She chose her name, ‘XMeKate,’ to honor the sharp and uncompromising Kate from Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, one of the bard’s strongest female characters. Like her namesake Kate’s tenacity came from hardship and pain lead to power which infused itself into her music. Kate started performing as one half of an acoustic duo that started to get attention and draw crowds in clubs here

HOROSCOPES ARIES

You’re out and about, in and of the world. You can’t help it. The world, people, events, food, travel, adventures, mountain peaks, plains, cultures, culture, civilization– all summoning you to participate. Perhaps you will consider writing a book, perhaps publishing becomes interesting, Think deeply on your goals. Create more. Ponder upon this statement, “I see the goal, I reach that goal and then I see another.”

TAURUS I ask that you also read and ponder upon the statement at the end of Aries. And then observe the many and varied goals, dreams, hopes & wishes filtering through your mind each day. There’s not enough time each day to accomplish everything, Time seems to have changed, accelerated. You have many plans to fulfill. Visualize yourself in the midst of abundant resources and money. See yourself as the Law of Attraction. Accomplishing all dreams.

GEMINI What are you planning for the holidays? Will you prepare with family and friends? With someone in particular? Tend carefully to the one closest to you. A silver light is shining on your relationship. Communicative intimacy is being called for. Past, present and future seem to be bundled together. You and

another need to travel. Down a river or lake somewhere. Blue mountains ahead.

CANCER Your health at this time is what matters most. Focusing on health is good because you have the capacity to purify, harmonize and heal more quickly now. Foods are also on your mind. Are you considering preparing food to give as gifts? Are endless tasks and responsibilities appearing moment by moment. Till you have no time? Say no to some. You need rest.

LEO Your heart seeks more adventure, fun, play and being tended to in a very creative way. You need to accept invitations to parties and festivities, be with friends, attend plays, art shows, dances, and visit other people’s homes. You need both a Christmas tree and a Hanukkah bush with lights and candles everywhere. You need to be loved, cared for, recognized and then loved some more. Who can do this?

VIRGO You are the light of the world to your family. You are the one who must connect them, one to the other, create festivities that make them feel at home. You must begin to plan a large gathering so that those who have no family are welcomed (where you are).

You must merge separate realities, unify oppositions, and synthesize all the parts and pieces. You love these tasks.

LIBRA Being out and about in the neighborhood, dropping in on neighbors, driving around town seeking the most dramatic holiday decorations, having dinner with friends, gathering holiday decorations, seeing relatives, talking on the phone, sending holiday cards – all these you love to do You look forward to the beauty of this season all year. Who is your family these days?

SCORPIO For the next several weeks you sense a light shining on you. You’ll feel lucky, able, capable, resourceful, wealthy, emotionally supported. Don’t run out, however, and buy everything you fancy and shining brightly. Unless it’s for a loved one. Then be lavish. However, most appreciated would be your heart, given to another. Even if it’s to a friend. We think of you as internal, hidden, watchful. Give a little more of yourself for a while.

SAGITTARIUS All parts of you are active, energetic, hopeful (we hope). You also become a bit more impulsive, quick to anger, impatient, wanting your own way (for a time). We see you as being more assertive, daring like a warrior. You become

very attractive. However, be careful with everything – communicating, driving, walking running, using tools, implements. Things red, hot and sharp (all of which, to some, you are) might attack. You’re laughing. That’s good. Caution with language.

CAPRICORN You may be fatigued, weary, drained, worn out, depleted of major nutrients and in need of rest. Soon you will need to be out and about in the public more, so take this time to draw back, do less work. You can still plan and create goals. However, do not act upon them immediately, instead making health, rest, and well-being your central focus. Allow these to be your directives for at least a month.

AQUARIUS As you go out and about be careful not to be too reckless. You have energy and enthusiasm, you have hopes and wishes, you have opportunities and invitations. Amidst the many possibilities, attend only one or two at a time. Say thank you, exit gracefully, then focus on several more. Pay all bills promptly, don’t worry about money. You always have the needed resources and resourceful people.

summoned. A forum or group invites you to teach, to offer your gifts of communication, counseling, intelligence and knowledge. You prepare. However, you are aware that at any time, things dissolve away. So you are hopeful, patient, accepting, acquiescing, yet you are also wary, cautious, circumspect, careful and coiled like a kundalini snake, which is Ok (for now). Winter is almost here and as the temperatures outside fall, the list of fine films worth seeing heats up considerably. In fact, most Oscar contenders are released in November and December. Why Are You Avoiding the Doctor?

By Desert Star Staff Most Americans want to stay healthy and prevent disease and illness. For many, this means getting regular check-ups and using their health plan benefits. For others, it seems that ignorance is bliss. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Americans get their preventive services only about half the time, even though preventive care

is fully covered at no cost by most health plans under the Affordable Care Act. Preventive services save lives and decrease suffering from advanced illnesses. Vaccinations prevent lifethreatening diseases. Health screenings can find serious conditions early. Managing diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure can prevent heart attacks, strokes or kidney failure.

Despite these facts, there are numerous reasons people avoid their doctors. “Understanding why you avoid getting your needed preventive care is the first step in taking action for your health,” says Dr. Christina Stasiuk, senior medical director for Cigna. Dr. Christina and the experts at Cigna identified six types of people based on common perceptions.

By Desert Star Staff Most parents of infants are well-advised of certain dangers. However, there is one safety risk that doesn’t get much attention. Nearly 24,000 children are in accidents involving shopping carts each year, many suffering cuts, bruises, broken limbs and even head and brain injuries. Falls from the cart are among the leading causes of head injuries to young children. How can you ensure your trip to the store doesn’t lead to a trip to the emergency room? The experts at Safe-Strap, the inventors of the shopping cart seat belt, offer the following tips. • It can be tempting to try to balance your infant carrier on top of your shopping cart, as the carrier may appear like it’s designed to fit there.

Be advised, this isn’t the case. Use a shopping cart outfitted with a docking station, such as Safe-Dock, the first universal infant carrier docking station for shopping carts. This provides an easy transition of baby carrier from car to cart, no matter what the make and model of your US-purchased car seat is. • Toddlers and pre-schoolaged children can be at-risk too. Make sure your children are wearing a safety belt or harness at all times, and that it is fastened securely. Children should never ride in the basket. Remember, it only takes a second for a child to stand up in a shopping cart, which increases the chances of falling or tipping the cart. • Pay attention. These days, it’s all too easy to let your phone be a distraction, but shopping is distraction

enough. Keep your eyes on your kids for safer shopping. • If the stores you shop in don’t offer carts with infant carrier docks, talk to a store manager. Your customer feedback is valued, and your voice could help motivate the store to upgrade their carts to include important safety features. More shopping cart safety tips can be found at shoppingcartsafety.com, where parents can also see if local retailers offer SafeDock and request their stores install the system. It’s important to keep in mind that most shopping cart injuries are entirely preventable. Make shopping safer for your baby and more convenient for you by always using a shopping cart with proper safety features. StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff Dock and request their stor Getting cozy this winter? You’ll definitely want to make use of your fireplace. But remember, you’ll need

to take extra precautions to keep everybody and everything safe. The use of a safety screen is a must -- in fact, they’re required on all

Thinking about where you fit can help you see why you may put off preventive care: • Procrastinators: Procrastinators fear that a check-up will discover a condition that needs to be addressed and will impact them personally and financially. They delay or avoid getting a check-up to cope with their apprehension. • What-if Worriers: What-if Worriers spend a lot of time thinking about unpleasant hypothetical situations and things. While some worriers see a doctor for every ache or pain, others avoid check-ups altogether because they anticipate an unfavorable diagnosis. • Solitary Sufferers: Many people don’t get help from their doctors to avoid revealing personal issues or concerns -- especially related to mental health or substance use -because they’re ashamed and worried about being judged as weak by others. This fear also keeps them from using their Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) at work. • Super Savers: Super Savers always look for a good

deal and hate to pay full price for anything. They pinch every penny and may view a checkup as not worth the cost. Some don’t even realize their health benefit plan covers preventive care services with no out-ofpocket costs, or how advanced diseases may cost them much more time and money. • Workaholics: People in this group value work over any other activity. They may consider a check-up to be a waste of time, and don’t realize that poor health can impact the work performance they prize. • Self-Diagnosers: SelfDiagnosers feel confident that they are engaging in healthy activities and the need for a check-up doesn’t really apply to them. They may not consider that early on, many conditions have no physical symptoms. No matter what your own motivations and concerns may be, you can get tips on taking control of your health and using your health benefits to the fullest at Cigna.com. “From vaccinations to early detection, optimal health absolutely includes preventive care. Get past the hurdles and schedule your recommended check-ups. It is crucial for your long-term health and wellness,” says Dr. Christina. StatePoint

A Hollywood Movie Industry Comedy at Geffen Playhouse

Lucas Near-Verbrugghe, Rebecca Henderson, Jennifer Mudge, Nate Corddry and Keith Powell. Photo by Jeff Lorch Photography. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Hollywood is a magical word in the world of show business. It conjures up feelings of glamor, celebrity, and money… tons of it. And of course, when money enters the picture (pun definitely intended), powerful men and and women cannot be far behind. And the gold mine at the end of the rainbow is Television. Ask any budding writer in Los Angeles, what his or her choice of a dream job is in the industry would be, and nine times out of ten, the savvy

ones will say ‘show runner’. If you’re the show runner, you’re the creative executive writer and the producer with immense influence and power that controls the syndicated/rerun market where the really big money gathers in piles in every room in your home or bank. Yes, the stage is the touchstone of the performing arts, and the movies once were kings of the box office, but the Mother Lode now is television and everyone wants a piece of the action. “Icebergs” is a Geffen Playhouse World Premiere production written by Alena Smith, herself a TV writer, and is smartly directed by Geffen Artistic Director Randall Arney.

The Geffen has been the venue of choice for many of Los Angeles’ emerging playwrights due to the proximity of Hollywood and a steady stream of available quality actors thanks to close-by TV and movie production companies. LA is an ‘industry town’ and many Geffen productions are sprinkled with familiar faces from TV, stage and movies. “Icebergs”, in short, tells the story of a millennial married couple who both work in the industry. Calder an up and coming movie writer/ director nicely played by Nate Corddry, and Jennifer Mudge as Abigail, his beautiful but neurotic actor wife. Abigail is an

established leading lady who is beginning to be aware that her biological maternal clock is ticking away and that she and Calder must make some career altering choices. A career or children? They have been trying to get pregnant but without luck. Besides, they reason, with all the talk these days about “climate change”, maybe kids should be not on their radar screens just now. Into this flux-filled weekend comes Calder’s old college roommate Reed (Keith Powell), a paleontologist and science professor who is attending a science conference this weekend on the subject - you guessed it - climate change. In addition to Reed, Abigail’s unpredictable, wisecracking tarot card reading friend Molly (hilariously played by Rebecca Henderson) unexpectedly drops in. Abigail and Calder’s agent Nicky played by Lucas NearVerbrugghe, is spot on as a schmoozing Hollywood agent looking out for his clients. In one scene, the issue of whether Abigail should be given the lead role in Calder’s screenplay which has not yet been cast comes up. But Nicky diplomatically says he thinks the studio may not green light it with Abigail in the part. Calder loyally says to Nicky it’s my movie and either Abigail plays the lead, or it’s no deal.

That scene becomes a bit of a stretch in order to believe that this type of dialogue rings true in an industry where hard-nose executives wear flak-jackets under their business suits for safety and eat noble and loyal writers for breakfast. “Icebergs” is a light, nice, TV sitcom-like play with plenty of laughs. The actors are solid, in their verisimilitude performances, but it’s not like they’re splitting the atom or solving world hunger during this weekend in LA’ Silver Lake District setting. It’s just a-slice-of-life peek into the up and down machinations of the television/move industry, along with the decision of whether two millennial Hollywood professionals should plan to have children or not. Anthony T. Fanning’s functional set design gives the actors plenty of space to roam. And the David Kay Mickelsen’s costumes have the proper Southern California industry look. Lighting designer Daniel Ionazzi, and composer and sound designer Richard Woodbury complete the creative team led by director Arney. The play is performed without an intermission and runs approximately 95 minutes. “Icebergs” performs at the Geffen Playhouse on the Gil Cates stage and runs through December 18, 2016.

Champagne-Inspired Décor: For those in the midst of planning a holiday party, Vitalie suggests using a bubbly bar as the centerpiece of the festivities. “Create a dedicated space for your bubbles, offering options such as Champagne Taittinger Brut La Française and Prestige Rosé, and allow guests to taste at their own leisure. It makes for a great spot to strike up conversation and leaves the host free to mingle with all of the other guests,” says Vitalie. In terms of the look for your bubbly bar, you don’t have stick with traditional holiday colors. Instead, let Champagne Taittinger inspire your décor by using metallics like brushed gold, galvanized silver and rose gold, alongside lush holiday greens, for a more contemporary take on holiday spirit. For bigger crowds, largeformat bottles are sure to be a crowd-pleaser -- from a Magnum (two standard bottles), to a Methuselah (eight standard bottles). “Everyone loves a big bottle of Champagne, and it will save you tons of recycling space, as well!” says Vitalie. Parisian Raw Bar: Take a moment from the hustle and bustle of the holidays and transport you and your guests to Paris with a French-style raw bar -- a crowd pleaser at any party and for any season.

Move on to the perfect shrimp cocktail: the sweet flavor with just a squeeze of lemon is a natural fit with Champagne. Then, end with a bit of lobster or crab,” says Vitalie. For a new presentation, stagger footed cake stands at different heights to create areas where you can add additional design elements, such as winter greenery, flowers, candles and lights. Drape linen or other textured fabric for added texture and a touch of Paris. Voila! Champagne Macarons: Chocolate delicacies and Champagne are a natural pairing, particularly when there is a secondary element of fruit in the chocolate, such as passion fruit, raspberry, coconut or

hazelnut. And the outer shell, airy pillow, creamy center and soft chew of Macarons are a natural fit for Champagne, which is an equally ethereal experience. Available online at mrchocolate.com in Brut La Française, Bellini, Mimosa, and Rosé, Champagne Taittinger Macarons at Jacques Torres Chocolate can round out your dessert spread and provide a memorable conclusion to your meal. More information can be found at taittinger.com. So much more than just a drink, let Champagne be the source of your entertaining inspiration this holiday season. StatePoint

Tips for Making this Holiday Gathering the Best One Yet! By Desert Star Staff As most holiday hosts know, it’s not unheard-of to spend the majority of your party in the kitchen, while guests laugh together down the hall. But preparing in advance can help you reduce stress, have more time to make the moments special and still serve a delicious meal. Here are a few hosting hints to make this holiday the best yet. Snappy Sides: Make sides in a cinch by doing any chopping, slicing or mixing in advance of the day of your party. Certain sides can even be prepped ahead and popped in the oven just before the guests arrive. Or, consider making your party a potluck festivity. This way, everyone pitches in on the food, which leaves you time to mine Pinterest for simple DIY holiday décor ideas that are sure to draw

more than a few wows. Main Course: The centerpiece of your celebration, the ham or turkey, shouldn’t involve a ton of work or preparation. When your guests have traveled from all over, why not treat them (and yourself) to a little taste of home that provides the perfect presentation and effortless preparation? One easy way to serve these home favorites without spending all day near the oven is by picking up a readyto-serve, premium option locally. Classic options like those from HoneyBaked Ham come spiral sliced so they are effortless to serve. Their handcrafted, premium meats are smoked over blended hardwood chips and finished with a sweet, crunchy glaze, giving flavors that are evocative of happy holiday memories and home cooking.

The brand also offers ready-made sides, like green bean casserole and herb stuffing, as well as cakes, pies and other desserts, which could potentially mean onestop shopping for you. And, while shopping in-store, you can join HoneyBaked Ham in supporting the Gary Sinise Foundation by donating to help our nation’s first responders. DIY Drinks: All too often, hosts get bogged down fixing drinks for guests as they arrive. Avoid this conundrum by setting up a DIY drink station. You may consider making a signature drink in advance and serving it in a beverage dispenser or punch bowl, or giving guests a few cocktail suggestions on a placard. Don’t forget the little ones. Set up a hot chocolate bar that includes marshmallows, peppermints and whipped cream topping options.

Ask adults to help their children serve themselves. You don’t have to get sidelined in the kitchen at your holiday gathering in order to

By Desert Star Staff Lights decorate streets across the country. The holiday season is officially upon us! However, with the joy of the season comes the tendency to over-indulge. On average, Americans gain approximately one to two pounds during the holiday season. With just a few strategies from nutrition experts, you can avoid weight gain while still enjoying friends, family and holiday feasts. Don’t Skip Meals: “In preparation for a holiday feast, do not skip meals throughout the day,” says Heather Mangieri, registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson. “Skipping meals can result in overeating later on.” Instead, Mangieri

recommends eating foods full of protein and high in fiber before the feast because these foods will fill you up and satisfy hunger. Don’t Forget to Exercise: The holidays are a busy time full of cooking, decorating, shopping and catching up with loved ones. But remember, it is still important to make time for physical activity. “We have set a tradition to include a family walk over the holidays,” says registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy spokesperson Toby Smithson. “It’s a great time to create memories, share in conversation and sneak in exercise.” Don’t Overdo the Buffet: Holiday meals tend to be large, buffet-style gatherings where it is easy to overeat and fill up on unhealthy options.

To avoid overeating, Mangieri recommends loading your party plate with lean protein and veggies. “But that poses a problem at many holiday parties because treats and snacks are often all that fill the countertops. Stay in control by taking your own healthy protein options with you such as turkey meatballs, chicken skewers or a shrimp cocktail platter,” says Mangieri. Also note that it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain you are full. “Before going back for seconds, take time to savor each bite and enjoy conversation with friends and family,” says Mangieri. Don’t Splurge on Sweets: “It is okay to save room for dessert, but try to choose only one splurge item,” recommends Smithson. “These

Additional easy and affordable recipes, including tasty appetizers and desserts, are available online at Dollar General Easy Meals at dollargeneral.com/easymeals. Keep food and drinks near the viewing area so guests don’t need to miss a moment of the game to refill their cups or plates. Save Big on Game Day:

S. JOHNSON. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by LYNN VAN BUSKIRK JOHNSON in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that LYNN VAN BUSKIRK JOHNSON be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests the decedent’s WILL and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The WILL and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act with limited authority. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: 12/22/16 at 8:45AM in Dept. 1-A located at 46-200 OASIS STREET, INDIO, CA 92201 IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for Petitioner WILLIAM R. REMERY, ESQ. - SBN 89897 JACQUELYNN REMERY, ESQ. LAW OFFICES OF WILLIAM R. Hollywood legend Sophia Loren to grace the stage at The Show

By Desert Star Staff Rancho Mirage, CA. – The Show at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa welcomes to the stage Sophia Loren, whom the American Film Institute calls one of the great legends of the golden age of Hollywood. In her only appearance in the Coachella Valley during the national tour of An Unforgettable Evening with Sophia Loren, the award-winning actress shares stories of her childhood in war-torn Italy, her family life and prolific career. Loren will be accompanied by interviewer Bill Harris and she will also answer questions from the audience. From beauty pageant runner-up at age 14 to a modeling career that paved the way for a successful big-screen presence, Sophia Loren has firmly established her legacy as one of the most famous International Film Stars of our time. After a series of popular Italian films in the 1950s, the screen siren caught Hollywood’s eye and America’s heart with a string of movies, including Boy on a Dolphin, Houseboat, Arabesque and Heller in Pink

Tights, starring with Hollywood’s top leading men, including Cary Grant, Marlon Brando, Gregory Peck and Paul Newman. However, it was Loren’s performance in the riveting Italian mother-daughter drama Two Women (La Ciociara) that made cinematic history. The New York Times called her portrayal of a strong-willed woman who endures an assault to spare her daughter from the horrors of war “profound.” The role scored Loren an Academy Award – the first ever given for a non-English language role. Loren expertly juggled European movies – garnering an Oscar nod for her performance in Marriage Italian Style – and American films such as El Cid and The Fall of the Roman Empire. The hit Italian comedy Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, which won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, featured a striptease by Loren’s character, which was re-created in Robert Altman’s comedy Ready to Wear. In 1991, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognized Loren’s career achievements

with an honorary Oscar. An Unforgettable Evening with Sophia Loren takes place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 12, 2017. Tickets, starting at $65, are available online at HotWaterCasino.com, by calling (800) 585-3737 or in person at the Essentials Gift Shop at

Irish Playwright Martin McDonagh returns to Mark Taper Forum

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The Irish have the gift of the gab to be sure. In America, up until the 21st Century, the general image of Ireland and its people was mainly shaped by Hollywood. Actors like John Wayne, Ward Bond, Victor McLaglen, Barry Fitzgerald, Maureen O’Hara, and Director John Ford, plus many more over the years, were responsible for setting the tone and image of the Emerald Isle. As a result, we tend to view the Irish as charmin’, whimsical folk, with a twinkle in their eyes and a ready smile and a quick wit with which to enliven social gatherings. Well, there’s more to the Irish than George Bernard Shaw, Irish Whisky, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, and a somewhat publicly held image concerning their rowdy, pugnacious nature along with the lilt of Irish laughter. British-born, Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, has a much darker view of his heritage and their behavior (the IRA notwithstanding). McDonagh has said, “Theatre is never going to be edgy in the way I want it to be”. Which, for those who have not viewed his plays before, is a clue as to what one can expect to see in his dramadey of rural, bleak, West Ireland existence.

“The Beauty Queen of Leenane,” a black comedy written by McDoagh in 1996 and staged on Broadway in 1998, returns in a riveting revival production at the Mark Taper Forum, solidly directed by longtime McDonagh associate Garry Hynes; both veterans of the Druid Theatre in Galway, Ireland, as is the entire cast. The story revolves around Mag Folan, an elderly mother brilliantly played by Marie Mullen, who is one of those maddeningly dependent and demanding women of a certain age who love to manipulate those about them under the guise of helplessness. Mother-daughter love/hate relationships are timeless and are always relevant for audiences. Mag’s actions guarantee a miserable existence for her never-married 40 yearold daughter Maureen, sensationally performed by Aisling O’Sullivan, who grudgingly responds to her mother’s constant demand for attention. “Where’s me porridge bowl Maureen?” “Could I have another cuppa of tea dear?” In addition, Mag is nosy, a gossip, and self-centered. Maureen is Cinderella without any wicked step-sisters. She cleans, cooks, does the bills, and is expected to be on call 24/7. Not a recipe for a happy home life, however, Maureen is quite capable of living on her own if she has

L-R: Marie Mullen, Marty Rea and Aisling O’Sullivan. to, and she’s a ‘looker’ too. A respite from Maureen’s hell arrives in the form of 40 something year-old, unemployed neighbor, Pato Dooley, terrifically played by Marty Rea. Pato has had a yen for Maureen for some time but doesn’t quite know to how to broach the subject of dating. He is shy and careful not to offend or appear overeager, being almost obsequious in his moments with her. Pato’s letter in Act Two to Maureen from London where he is temporarily working, is a comedy monologue masterpiece. His plea in commitment to continue the relationship is a sublime comedy moment that is met with rousing audience applause at its conclusion. When the moment of their

dating/ mating dance finally does begin, along with too many drinks, Pato becomes Maureen’s sleepover bedmate as Mag discovers in the morning while getting her own breakfast for a change. No Maureen to wait on her and then Pato comes down stairs zipping up his trousers. The comedy exchanges and sly dialogue throughout the two act play speaks comedy, but those who are familiar with McDonagh plays know he tends toward grisly denouements. He’s a fan of movie director Quentin Tarantino. Need I say more? However, no spoiler alerts here. The brilliance of “Beauty Queen” lies in the performances of its actors. Ms Mullen, Ms. O’Sullivan,

Mr. Rea, and Mr. Aaron Monaghan, who plays Ray Dooley, Pato’s young brother. Monaghan is the comedy relief in the play, but I had a devil of a time understanding that heavy brogue of his spoken at warp speed. “The Beauty Queen of Leenane” is definitely a Druid company family affair. Set Designer/Costume designer Francis O’Connor renders a home that is bleak and dingy, with costumes to match the mood lighting of Designer James F. Ingalls. Sound Designer Greg Clarke and Composer Paddy Cunneen, are also Druid associates of long standing. The riveting comedy/ drama revival performs at the Mark Taper Forum through December 18, 2016.
