How Compassionate Workplaces are Healthier for Everyone By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Workplace and community leaders come together this week to focus on how compassion can play a bigger role in our lives. The Compassion Leadership Summit is being held at the University of Washington, co-hosted by the school’s Undergraduate Women in Business. The two-day event features topics such as dignity for all, creating compassionate cities and how to support the next generation. Martha Enson, artistic director for EnJoy Productions, one of the summit’s presenters, says those at the summit also will discuss compassionate disagreement – an important tool during these contentious times. She says one goal is to realize you can’t make people think a certain way. “I can work on the tools that I carry in myself, which doesn’t mean I roll over and believe what you say,” she

states. “It simply means I can learn how to build bridges; I can learn how to listen. I can learn how to have appreciation for different perspectives.” Enson says summit-goers will share tools for creating more compassionate and mindful workplaces and communities. The summit is Friday and Saturday. Alix Schwartz, executive director of compassionate global initiative for the Human Values Center, is part of the summit on youth. She says youth are being raised in a culture of fear right now but have decided to stand up and have their voice heard. Schwartz says more compassionate workplaces will encourage people to stay longer and be interested in their work, and we should think about how to create this place alongside youth. “We need to hold space that’s non-judgmental and that is safe for these youngsters to come in and share what they think is working, what

(New Africa/Adobe Stock) they think is beneficial, what they think would impact in a positive way not only their community, but everything around them,” she states. Enson maintains the more compassion people

can feed into the systems around them, the more they will thrive, and that has value for individuals as well. “If we’re all connected, then there is a value to creating a space that is more

just, more loving, kinder, more filled with humor because it will impact me directly, because I am part of this whole ecosystem,” she states.

A Baby Named Faith Survived The Mexico Ambush Killings NBC News Staff The carnage was so horrific, family members didn’t recognize the remains of nine relatives. “All they found was charred remains, ash and bones,” family member Kendra Lee Miller said. “There were remains inside and outside of the vehicle.” Yet inside a torched car riddled with bullet holes, a tiny sign of life emerged. A 7-month-old baby — aptly named Faith — was alive. She survived a grisly ambush attack in Mexico that killed her mother and eight relatives as their caravan of cars was headed to see other family members Monday. In this remote,

mountainous part of northern Mexico, extended family members found the horrific scene before authorities did. “When we opened the passenger door, there was a car seat there with a bullet hole through the canopy of the car seat and two bullet holes through the bottom of the car seat,” said relative Julián LeBarón, who was the first to find Faith. He said Faith “sat in that car seat for over nine hours when we found her.” But Faith’s mother, Christina Marie Langford Johnson, didn’t survive. “She was just laying on the ground when we found her,” LeBarón said. “I can tell from the bloodstains that

Plastic Bag Ban Debate Heats Up Again

By Desert Star Staff The plastic bag ban debate is once again heating up in Ohio. A state Senate committee held its first hearing Wednesday on SB 222, which would preempt local governments from banning or taxing single-use plastic bags. Cuyahoga County passed such a ban that goes into effect Jan. 1, and a few other Ohio communities have similar ordinances on the books. State Sen. Michael Rulli, R-Salem, sponsored the bill and contends it will provide clarity and consistency for commerce in the state. “Consumers and

businesses deserve rules and regulations that are uniform and easy to understand,” he states. Sarah Damron is a chapter manager with the Surfrider Foundation, an environmental group that advocates for clean water and healthy beaches. She counters that Ohio should be taking action at the state level to reduce plastic pollution, instead of taking away power from local communities. “Governments at every level from local to state to even entire countries have taken policy action to address the plastic plague

caused by these kinds of items,” she points out. “In Ohio, for some reason, we’re going backwards.” SB 222 is companion legislation to HB 242, which had a fourth committee hearing in June. Supporters say the fees or fines imposed for violating plastic container bans are bad for business. But Elissa Yoder Mann, a conservation manager with the Sierra Club’s Ohio Chapter, argues there’s a lot more at stake, noting the state currently has just 39.9 years of landfill waste capacity. “Plastic pollution is November 8, 2019

Once it gets into the river, it breaks down into little pieces, and those pieces are consumed by fish and eventually get into the food chain.” Mann adds it’s a matter of protecting both the environment and local democracy. Since a similar bill died in Ohio last year, Mann questions who is behind this effort. “Is it the plastic industry?” she raises. “Is it the fracking industry? “Who is the one that is

As relatives in both the US and Mexico grieve the loss of three mothers and six of their children, the family is grateful that other children survived — including some who walked for hours trying to save each other. “It’s a miracle any of them are alive,” Willie Jessop said. “Only God knows how they can here’s so much carnage and so much damage to the vehicles and to their bodies and have them still be alive.” Source: NBC Palm Springs

Oklahoma frees over 500 inmates in largest commutation in US history

By Desert Star Staff Hundreds of inmates have been released early from Oklahoma prisons, breaking the record for the largest prisoner commutation in US history. It is part of a reform effort in a state dubbed the world’s “prison capital.” In a move approved by the state’s Pardon and Parole Board (PPB) last week, some 462 inmates walked free from facilities across Oklahoma on Monday, where many met loved ones for tearful reunions. Another 65 prisoners are being held on detainers and are also slated for early release, leaving an estimated 28,000 still behind bars in the state. We really want you to

Let’s make it, so you guys do not come back here again.” The decision comes as part of a sweeping reform initiative aiming to reduce Oklahoma’s massive prison population, which ranked number one worldwide last year for inmates per 100,000 residents, according to the Prison Policy Initiative. While the US already leads the list per capita among other nations, the state of Oklahoma alone regularly exceeds the US average, nearly doubling it in 2018 and vying with Louisiana for the top spot. Plagued by overcrowding and decrepit facilities, Oklahoma Department of Corrections Director Joe Allbaugh acknowledged last year that the state’s prison system was operating at 113 percent of capacity. Not accounting for the several for-profit private contractors hired by the state, the figure jumps to 153 percent.

Costume Designer Orry-Kelly’s Journey from Down Under To Hollywood By Lisa Lyons Australia’s Orry-Kelly was born in a small town in New South Wales called Kiawa, famed for its blowhole. The only child of an alcoholic tailor father and a proper British housewife, Kelly longed, for a more artistic path in life. He brought his wit, wiles and ‘wicked’ ways to America in the 1920s, first as an aspiring vaudevillian, then a Prohibition-era bootleg gin supplier, and finally ascending the Hollywood ladder as a top costume designer to the talented leading ladies of the time including Ava Gardner, Mae West, Fanny Brice (a lifelong friend) and Bette Davis, among others. Kelly was on the A list of designers, earning three Academy Awards - for An American in Paris, Les Girls and Some Like It Hot. But beneath the shimmering facade of his glamorous life, Kelly had a not-so-well-kept secret - he was a gay man with a drinking problem nursing a broken heart from a year’s long affair with debonair actor Cary Grant. Some 51 years after his death in 1964, a handwritten memoir of his rise and fall was discovered tucked away in a pillowcase in suburban Sydney. “Women I Undressed” was never sent to a publisher. Still, when it was finally published in 2015, its sensational secrets were catnip to hungryfor-gossip movie fans. When writer/performer Nick Hardcastle, himself an Aussie and native of New South Wales, saw a documentary about Kelly from Oscar-winning director Gillian Armstrong, he was enthralled and determined to share the story of this talented yet complicated man to the world at large. The result is “Orry,” a one-man show best described as a theatrical distillation of the memoir combining song and dance, archival footage, puppetry, and even one or two of Orry-Kelly’s original designs. Opening with a reimagining of Kelly’s funeral at Forest Lawn, complete with eulogy by Jack Warner, we meet the impish title character who leaps from his all-white coffin to address the audience and introduces us to his early life - including his invisible friend “Bijou” and his lonely life as somewhat “different” from his working-class schoolmates. Hardcastle is a handsome and ingratiating performer who quickly makes the audience fall for this Down Under devil. His singing voice, while not powerful, is elegant and well-suited to the demands of the role. The Soubrette, played by lovely lyric soprano Danielle Heaton portrays Bijou, Fanny Brice, and a variety of other colorful characters from Kelly’s life and does so with effortless charm. The set by Emmy awardwinning scenic designer John Iacovelli is simple,

4

DesertSTAR

functional, and understated with the coffin center stage, a sewing machine stage right, and piano stage left. Musical director Anthony Zediker accompanies Hardcastle as he weaves popular songs of the era throughout the performance as a commentary on the action. Lighting by Jared A. Sayeg is subtle, and the costumes by Kate Bergh are spot on. Director and dramaturg Wayne Harrison (the former artistic director of Sydney Theatre Company) keeps it simple, playing most scenes front and center, letting his leading man control the pacing of the approximately 100-minute one-act with great success. We don’t discover much about Kelly’s life in the 50s and 60s - Kelly apparently was discreet and never mentioned

names of his lovers other than Grant and a rascally con man in Sydney known as “Gentleman George” - but the amazing designs and artwork he produced spoke volumes about his view of life and the

legacy he left behind which comprised an astonishing 300 films between 1932 and 1963. For a titillating and swellegant evening, I encourage you to visit the Lee Strasberg Theatre, located at

7936 Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. ORRY is playing for a limited run closing November 11, so get your tickets soon by calling 855-326-9945 or visiting Gentleman-George.com.

‘The Kitchen’ --A Mob Drama

The name Melissa McCarthy, for many, conjures up comedy and laughter. She was the wife in the long-running TV series “Mike and Molly” and has often made guest appearances on “Saturday Night Live.” She then branched out into funny films like “Ghostbusters “ and “Bridesmaids.” Now she stars in dramatic features, the latest being “The Kitchen” set in New York in 1978 The film, written by Oscarnominated screenwriter Andrea Berloff (“Straight Outta Compton”), marks Berlof’s directorial debut and her story source material for “The Kitchen” stems from a DC Vertigo comic-book series by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle. In this dark crime tale, Kathy (McCarthy) is married to Jimmy (Brian D’Arcy James), a protection racketeer who seems to love his wife and two children. The other two women’s lives are not as harmonious. Claire (Elizabeth Moss) is often beaten by her brutish husband, Rob (Jeremy Bobb). Her life in Hell’s Kitchen is literally hellish.

And Ruby (Tiffany Haddish) has a spouse (James Badge Dale) who is a cold fish plus a miserable mother-in-law (Margo Martindale) as well. The three men all work in the protection racket, taking money from local store owners and businesses in the area, promising to keep them safe. One night after a robbery, all three men are arrested and sentenced to three years in prison. Their wives seek help from the gang leader, Little Jackie (Myk Watford). He promises to take good care of them while their men are away, but that promise turns out to be a lie. In desperation, the three women join forces and take over their husband’s jobs. They also keep all the money they collect. While their takeover is relatively rapid, the film doesn’t adequately detail how they managed to do it. Suddenly they are on top, and as their mission in life changes, so does their appearance. They are now confident and well dressed. While their hubbies are away, they thrive and prosper

and make deals with the Italian mafia boss (Bill Camp) and the Hasidic jewelers in the area. Now the three women are making better deals than their husbands ever did, and they love being in charge. Soon Gabriel (Domhnall Gleeson) shows up. He is a killer who has returned to the neighborhood, determined to start a relationship with Claire. Their love affair rapidly

heats up, because he really cares about her, unlike her miserable husband who is now out of the picture--at least for three years. Gabriel not only teaches Claire how to kill effectively, but he also shows her how to carve up a corpse and dispose of the pieces so that they will never be found. What they do together is gory, but their love is surprisingly tender.

“The Kitchen” is rated R for violence, language throughout and some sexual content. Running time: 1 hour, 43 minutes. “The Kitchen,” from Warner Bros., is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. Exclusive featurettes include “Running Hell’s Kitchen” and “Taking Over the Neighborhood” plus deleted scenes.

Photo by Pat Krause Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Family YMCA of the Desert held its 32nd Annual Hoedown at Sundown on November 2nd. The event was held at the Agua Caliente Resort and Casino. The event was sponsored by the Commander Allen Fund. Everyone had a rootin tootin good time. There were hundreds of silent auction items that filled long tables in the entry of the ballroom. There was something for everyone to bid on from gas to golf to massages and more. www.desertstarweekly.com

The event started with early bird arrivals, a hosted bar, and a huge silent auction. There were games to keep everyone busy having a good time, like roping a calf, bag toss, and other games where skill was not needed to enjoy playing. This gave people time to get together with old and meet new friends. Cowboy costumes, boots, and hats were everywhere. A fun time to relax and enjoy getting dressed up in a costume. Dinner was served at 6:30. Guests arrived in the

ballroom for dinner with kids greeting and waving them in. As guests were getting seated, the 16 YMCA children danced to the music, and their choreography was great. No one seemed to miss a step, so I am sure they practiced a lot. The guests appreciated their efforts with loud applause. The dinner was a Western BBQ with BBQ Brisket and chicken, Corn, beans, cornbread and rolls, A delicious chocolate dessert topped off the meal. many activities the YMCA provides. There is a day camp for ages 5-12, activities for children 2-4 at Westfield Mall, to name just a few of the extra programs they offer. To raise more money for programs, they held a paddle plea followed by a live auction of about a dozen exceptional items. The YMCA is the largest employer in the Desert, with about 400 staff members. It takes that many to provide all the programs and services the YMCA creates for 3,800 children daily. The programming is in all

locations across the Coachella Valley. They provide services from Palm Springs to Mecca, so no child will miss out on the many excellent programs the YMCA can provide. The Family YMCA has an unwavering commitment to the community. The Family YMCA and all its programs help every child in many ways to help them grow healthy and become better citizens. They teach social responsibilities and healthy living so they can become adults the Desert, their families, and themselves can be proud of.

Voter Registration Soars in California

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Record numbers of Californians are now registered to vote – more than 20.3 million people – which is 3 million more than at this point in 2016, according to the latest statistics from Secretary of State Alex Padilla. More than 80% of voters in the Golden State have registered, which is the highest percentage in 67 years. Padilla says we’re now 10 percentage points higher than the 2016 presidential election – and he predicts sky-high turnout for the 2020 presidential contest, thanks to a number of state-level reforms. “Automatic voter registration and online registration have empowered millions of citizens to register to vote,” Padilla states. The state will also be

mailing ballots to all voters next year. Voters can check that their registration is up to date at VoterStatus.sos.ca.gov and first time voters can go to RegisterToVote.ca.gov. People also can register on Election Day at any polling place or early-vote center. California’s primary is set for March 3. Padilla notes that people registered with any of the political parties can only vote in that party’s primary. “No party preference voters can, however, request to vote in the Democratic Party, Libertarian Party or American Independent Party’s presidential primary,” he points out. Democrats make up the largest bloc of registered voters in California, followed by “no party preference,” with Republicans coming in third.

Once Upon A Mattress

By Desert Star Staff MORONGO BASIN Reach Out Morongo Basin will be hosting the opening night of ‘Once Upon A Mattress’ directed by Theatre 29 veteran Kathryn Ferguson at Theatre 29, 63637 Sullivan Road, Twentynine Palms on Friday, November 22, 2019. Opening night tickets are $25 each. They are available at Z107.7, The Desert Trail, ArtFx and Furnishings, and at Reach Out Morongo Basin offices in the Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley senior centers. be served at intermission. If you thought you knew the story of ‘The Princess and The Pea,’ you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken’s love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn’t the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of beautiful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship

and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again. Proceeds from the event will benefit the neighbors helping neighbor’s organization which helps seniors and disabled residents live healthy and independent lives. Rapper T.I. faces backlash after taking his 18yo daughter to obgyn

8

By Desert Star Staff Rapper T.I. has sent Twitter into overdrive after he revealed that he takes his teenage daughter to a gynecologist to check if her hymen is intact. The bizarre admission has prompted accusations of abuse. “Not only have we had the conversation [about sex], we have yearly trips to the gynecologist to check her hymen,” T.I. said, with his confession leaving podcast hosts Nazanin Mandi and Nadia Moham somewhat dumbfounded. The musician, however, did not stop at that, making sure nobody got the impression he was just messing with the presenters. “Right after the birthday, we celebrate. And usually like the day after the party, she’s enjoying her gifts, I put a sticky note on the door: ‘Gyno. Tomorrow. 9:30.’” The hip hop star said he would then accompany his daughter to the gynecologist, asking her after the exam if she minded her doctor sharing the results. “I’m like... ‘They want you to sign this so we can share information. Is there anything you would not want me to know? Oh, OK. See doc? No problem.” Deyjah, the rapper said, has been subject to such check-ups since she turned 16, noting that “as of her 18th birthday, her hymen is still intact.” The doctor apparently attempted to warn the rapper that hymens can break from other things besides sex, among them strenuous physical activity, but he brushed off the argument. “So I say, ‘Look doc, she don’t ride no horses, she don’t ride no bike, she don’t play no sports. Just check the hymen, please and give me back my results expeditiously.”

Seemingly letting out the reason behind his preoccupation with his daughter’s virginity, T.I. argued that boys are reluctant to look for a relationship with girls who lack sexual experience. “[Virgins] – they’re no fun,” he said. “Who wants a virgin? Like really? All that work.” The rapper apparently does not hold his sons to the same high standard, however. “I will definitely feel different about a boy than I will about a girl. And that’s just the God’s honest truth. I don’t think there’s any father out there who’ll tell you any different.” The rapper’s startling admission has set Twitter alight, with many accusing him of invading the young adult’s privacy by making her go through “virginity testing.” “This is disgusting and horrible,” one commenter said. Some went as far as to suggest that the doctor who performed the procedure should be stripped of their license. Others noted that such tests are not always accurate – observing that not all women bleed during their first time – and called out T.I. for ignorance. Netizens also took issue with how T.I. broke the news of his daughter’s private parts online for the whole internet to discuss, which it has done ever since his odd admission. With the podcast going viral, #She’s18 and #T.I. have been trending on Twitter, while Deyjah’s Instagram page has been flooded with comments. “Seeing so many disgusting comments, it’s not even funny. I’m sorry your father made you a target to this cruel social media,” one message read. The 18-year-old has yet to comment on the controversy.
