Pan Am ‘Retro”

It was time to say goodbye to this wonderful crew who made The Pan Am Experience a hoot and a half. Photo by Beverly Cohn

Pan Am’s Flight To Nowhere Recreates the Golden Age of Travel By Beverly Cohn Have you ever longed for the good old days when luxury travel was, well, luxury travel? Back in the day, there were no security lines or body scanners and whoever accompanied you to the airport, could actually sit with you at the gate until you were ready to embark. When you walked onto a Pam Am plane, let’s say, you were greeted with lovely, smiling hostesses who were not being distracted by cell phones and most cordially

escorted you to your seat. Well folks, if you would like to relive that glorious time, I have just the spot for you. Air Hollywood, a wellknown motion picture studio specializing in films requiring interior or exterior shots of airplanes, has launched The Pan Am Experience. A joint venture of the studio’s CEO and Founder Talaat Captan and Anthony Toth, they have created the interior of a Pan Am Boeing 747, including First and Clipper Class cabins, as

well as the nostalgic spiral staircase connecting First Class to the Upper Deck dining room. Toth has spent years scouring the world for authentic original Pan Am seats, tables, silverware, dishes, stemware, and serving carts as well as different sections of the plane and vintage uniforms. The recreation is absolutely perfect for as you enter the plane, you are immediately catapulted back to that luxurious time. Before boarding the plane for our “flight to nowhere,” I

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Annual Palm Springs Pride Parade was held on Sunday Nov. 6th. Approximately 200 entries were in this year’s parade. I was told that almost 500 teens from a lot of the local and surrounding high schools attended. I also heard that there were over 300 students in the bands that participated. The parade lasted almost 2 hours. Of course, there was the usual floats and rainbow colors. Beautiful Cars held the honorees and celebrities.

The streets started lining up early along Palm Canyon Drive. People wanted to get a good spot to see as thousands came to see the parade. I noticed a lot of people had to park a couple blocks away and walk to the parade site. People brought their children to see this really fun and colorful parade. The kids loved the clown characters and the people on stilts. They also liked it when the parade walkers handed out beads and candy. The adults liked it too as many were seen with lots of colored

beads around their necks. There were local politicians in the parade, some already in office and others seeking office. There were participants who came from San Diego and Fontana and other cities near by. Local businesses were in abundance also with large numbers of walkers. There were a few very huge floats and many big balloons and colorful parasols. There were people dancing on the larger floats like the square

checked in at the reception desk where tickets cost anywhere between $200$300. I was issued a Pan Am Experience Boarding Pass for flight 811 to Hawaii, Seat 7J in Clipper Class. The reason for the Hawaii “destination,” is that the airline, which was in business from 1927-December 4, 1991, would have celebrated 50 years of flights to the island. Commemorating that event, lovely women, accompanied by a small band playing Hawaiian music, entertained us with

traditional Hula dancing. It is said that Pam Am set the bar for glamour and sophistication as well as giving the masses the opportunity to travel. The “waiting room” is filled with historic memorabilia showcasing the people, places, and aviation paraphernalia germane to particular eras. Pre-boarding drinks were served in the boarding area and soon an announcement was made that Flight 811 to Hawaii was now boarding First Continues on Page 10

Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 29th annual Hoedown at Sundown was held at the Agua Caliente Resort Spa on Sat. Nov. 5th. Over 350 people attended this year’s party. There were the usual games, many silent auction items, and refreshments for guests in the lobby. People could get their photo taken in the local jail fixture as a momentum of the night. Patrick Evans served as Emcee and is also a board member of the YMCA.

This is a night for everyone to get dressed up in their best western wear, dust off those cowboy boots and hats and enjoy the westerly theme. They served a delicious buffet of lettuce salads, Corn and bean salad, and BBQ Beans. The meats included chicken, shredded pork and beef BBQ that was tender and tasty. For dessert, the guests found the cupcakes at the end of the room with two varieties to choose from. This western

fare is always well received. The Agua Caliente Resort Spa does a great job with the food. Refreshments were served at several stations in the lobby area, thanks to Kristen and Rick Shalhoub, a local McDonald family. Games included stacking tiles to form a tower, throwing rings on cowboy boots and guests could try their hand at roping an imitation calf with the help of an instructor. There was a large live auction with 11 items

on the list that brought in thousands of dollars. The raffle items were announced, and then the dancing started. The dance floor was filled with fancy cowboys and cowgirls. Big John was the DJ that provided the dance music. The title sponsor was The Commander Allen Fund with the Title-inKind sponsor Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa. It takes many sponsors to put on a successful event like this. The YMCA helps 4000

kids a day in the Coachella Valley. They provide many programs to keep the youth busy and out of trouble. This is such a much-needed program for our children to show them a greater way of life. They help keep the kids out of gangs with sports and healthy programs. Programs include day and resident camps, a variety of sports, swimming, Karate, pre-school and childcare, plus so much more.

Human Rights Campaign Garden Party

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The theme for this years 17th annual Human Rights Campaign Garden Party was “Equality Forward”. Over 750 tickets sold right away and many waited to come until the day of the party. I think there was way over 800 people in the back yard of Gary Kief. Kief generously donated his huge back yard for this event. It was a hot afternoon but there was plenty of shade from the trees and tents that were set up. The stage was put up on the hill and the program started after the sun went down behind the mountain. There was Free valet as there is limited parking in that area. Co-chairs were Lynn Trevor and Andy Linsky while Dana Adkins and Janet Zappala took turns on the stage as emcees. The Advocate of Equality award was given to Brad White and Alexis Ortega. Both have been very involved in the Advocacy of the LGBT/ HIV/AIDS Movements and are very active in programs in the Coachella Valley. There was an open Cocktail hour and a very large silent auction that wove around the grounds. Appetizers were served and a dessert table was set up. Volunteers brought bottles of cold water for the guests to keep cool. There were several speakers on the subject

By Desert Star Staff It’s the dream retirement many people anticipate for decades. Hang out around the pool all day. Play one round of golf after the other. Finally read that teetering stack of books on the nightstand. In retirement, every day is Saturday – only without the dread about what Monday morning back at the office might bring. But is endless recreation enough to satisfy still-vibrant retirees who have both the health and the mental capacity to continue to learn, explore and contribute to the world? Maybe not, says Ann Vanderslice (www. annvanderslice.com), president and CEO of Retirement Planning Strategies, which specializes in advising federal workers about their benefits. “As people near retirement, they have a great opportunity to map out a strategy to create a fulfilling, rewarding rest of their lives,” Vanderslice says. “Studies show that retirees with a plan have the easiest time transitioning into and being the most satisfied in retirement.” For many people, planning for retirement focuses almost solely on the financial aspect. They worry about saving enough so they don’t run out of money. But retirement also represents a lifestyle change, as people accustomed to heading to a job each day suddenly find themselves without any meaningful reason for getting out of bed. And all that free time, which seems enticing at first, can quickly become boring. Vanderslice suggests a few factors to consider for those seeking a more fulfilling retirement: • To work or not to work. It’s not unusual for people to continue to work in retirement,

at least part-time. In some cases, the extra income is needed or at least adds a little more security to the retiree’s financial outlook. But some people simply don’t feel fulfilled if they aren’t contributing something by working. “Often, I hear people say they’ve been working since they were teenagers and the thought of stopping just makes them uncomfortable,” Vanderslice says. • Volunteer – but volunteer wisely. Plenty of groups need volunteer help, such as charitable organizations, schools, libraries, animal shelters, museums and more. But beware of letting them take advantage of your availability. “You can have your calendar filled before you know what hit you,” Vanderslice says. “Pretty quickly, you may end up feeling like you put in a 40-hour work week.” She recommends taking the time to identify the causes and issues important to you. Make sure the organization is aware of the skills you have to offer so you aren’t just licking envelopes. “And don’t overcommit your schedule,” Vanderslice says. “You do want to leave yourself some time just to kick back.” • Be a lifelong learner. Retirement can be a great time to take a college class or learn how to play a musical instrument. “It’s proven that those who are lifelong learners have a greater sense of optimism and a lower chance of dementia,” Vanderslice says. “So if you’ve always wanted to learn more about philosophy, wanted to take a cooking class, or to learn a foreign language, now is the time.” “It’s certainly important to have a financial plan for retirement,” Vanderslice says. “But to truly have a happy and rewarding retirement, you’ll want to make plans for your ideal retirement lifestyle as well.”

Advocates Push for More Latino Votes in Texas

By Desert Star Staff HOUSTON – Many political pundits speculate that Texas could take a major step toward becoming a blue state on Tuesday, and believe the Latino vote could be the difference. Texas has the second largest bloc of Latino voters in the country, but historically, they have not turned out in high enough numbers to affect the outcome. Carlos Duarte, Texas director of Mi Familia Vota, is spending a lot of

time knocking on doors in Latino neighborhoods in Houston. He said they could be a major force in Texas politics, if they vote. “There’s always the hope that Latinos are just going to turn out proportionately to their numbers,” he said. “I think that it’s a gradual thing what that we have seen in the past, and that we will continue to see. I don’t expect to see 80 or 90 percent of Latinos turning out to vote.” Latinos currently make

up one-quarter of registered voters in Texas. Mi Familia Vota is a nonpartisan community organization with a goal of getting the state’s more than 5 million eligible Latino voters to the polls. Duarte said Latino turnout in Texas in 2012 was only 39 percent, well below the national Latino turnout of 48 percent. He said he has been getting positive feedback from most of the families he’s met. Duarte continued, “Something that we’ve always

seen is people saying, ‘I’m going to vote. I’m going to take my children with me,’ or ‘I’m going to take my parents with me.’ ‘I’m going to take my sister, but I am definitely voting.’ So, I do sense a whole a lot of enthusiasm which I hadn’t seen in the past.” Duarte added it’s unlikely that Texas will turn from a Republican to a Democratic state in this election, but with persistence, he believes it is possible. “Everybody’s talking

about ‘Latinos are turning out because of the attacks of Donald Trump.’ Bottom line: That obviously creates a context for people to participate, but unless there are real investments from all of the interested parties, we will continue to see a dismal turnout in Texas,” he explained. Duarte said voter education on critical issues, such as criminal justice and school funding, is the key to Latinos moving forward.

By Desert Star Staff FBI Director James Comey has told Congress that a new investigation by his agency of Hillary Clinton’s private email server has not unearthed any information that would warrant any charges being brought against the Democratic candidate.

Saying that his team “has been working around the clock,” studying emails on a laptop belonging to the husband of an aide of Hillary Clinton’s, Comey claimed the review of the additional material “from a device obtained in connection with an unrelated criminal

investigation” did not change the investigators’ previous conclusion regarding Clinton’s email practices. In July, the FBI said no charges were warranted in the case of the former secretary of state concerning her use of a private email server. “[We] have not changed our conclusions that we expressed in July with respect to Secretary Clinton,” Comey wrote in his letter on Sunday. Since late October, the FBI director has found himself in hot water following his announcement of new “appropriate investigative steps” in the months-long investigation into Clinton’s use of a private server while she served as America’s secretary of state. The FBI then obtained a search warrant that allowed it to scour through some 650,000 emails discovered on a laptop belonging to exCongressman Anthony Weiner and apparently also used by

his wife, Clinton’s closest aide, Huma Abedin.Commenting on the announcement that there would be no charges, Clinton’s campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri told reporters they were “glad that this matter is resolved.”Earlier Sunday, the chairman of Clinton’s campaign, John Podesta, accused the FBI chief of revealing the new investigation in the first place by calling it a “mistake.”I think the men and women of the FBI are doing a tremendous job out here across the country, but the leakers should shut up,” Podesta said in an interview with NBC News’ Meet the Press. House of Representatives Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi described the FBI letter as “a clean bill of health,” adding that it should “finally close the door on this Republicans sideshow.” Meanwhile, Dianne Feinstein, senior Democratic

Senator representing California, said that the FBI’s decision to reopen an investigation into the scandal in late October “has unfairly hurt the campaign of one candidate and changed the tenor of this election.” However, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC) remained unfazed by the announcement, saying that the latest review does not change the fact that classified information was “placed at risk.”Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway pointed out that despite the clearance given by the FBI to Clinton, the agency has not changed its previous conclusions. “This means she still was reckless and careless, still lied about classified info,” she tweeted.

By Angela Monroe, Anchor / Reporter Californians will be deciding whether or not to tax and legalize marijuana with Proposition 64. Still illegal on all levels with the feds, but California said yes to medical use in 1996. Marijuana is one of the budding topics this election season. California voters poised to decide again -- they said no four years ago -whether or not to approve recreational use of pot. “I voted against it already, I believe that as a child of the late 60s and early 70s when we heard about how marijuana was illegal and destructive and damaging to our children, this would reverse all of history,” said Palm Desert resident, Marianne Bouldin. “I’m for it because it will help people who really are medically in need be able to get it a lot easier

and it will probably also drive the medical marijuana prices down,” said Steven Brantley of Palm Springs. “We have young grandsons, daughters and I don’t want them to be tempted, I don’t want to make it easy.” “Have a deep concern in increase in traffic problems due to intoxication from marijuana,” said Brian and Phyllis Coosaiah of Palm Desert. He isn’t the only one concerned about the roads, the Auto Club of Southern California is saying no to Prop 64. “After the state of Washington legalized marijuana for recreational use, the number of fatal crashes involving a driver who recently tested positive for marijuana use more than doubled. That is alarming to us as California and four other states consider legalizing marijuana for recreational use,” said Doug Shupe of the Auto Club of Southern California.

The proposition would add a tax on cultivation and sales which would be going to a range of enforcement, research, and education programs. So far 22 million dollars has been spent in support with only $1.5 million against with much from law enforcement associations. Meanwhile, the city of Desert Hot Springs is cashing in on this green crop by welcoming a wave of marijuana cultivators to the city. “The city of Desert Hot Springs has a half a million dollars coming in this and maybe close to a million dollars next year but over the next five to ten years it could be tens of millions of dollars and with Prop 64 possibly passing, this could be a very positive step towards those revenues coming in quicker,” said Desert Hot Springs Mayor Scott Matas. Medical marijuana dispensaries are growing

across the desert with some saying it’s a healing agent that could help more people. “I smoke because of my anxiety and stress and whatnot, and being able to smoke marijuana, it would be nice to smoke it more freely,” said Twentynine Palms resident, Richard Borunda. It was 20 years ago that California became the first state to approve the use of medical marijuana. If Proposition 64 passes, all you need to be is over 21. “Progress is not perfection, I think there’s definitely some things in regards to the criminal aspects that as a provider for patient care, I am concerned with,” said Green Pearl Organic’s

owner, Nicole Salisbury. Salisbury is worried about the amount of pot a person could carry on them, but still they support and are preparing for Prop 64. “We use a system that’s already developed, it’s already been used and tested. They used it in Colorado they use it in Washington, Oregon, Colorado already and all it does is allow me to mark patients recreational, medical,” said Salisbury. You couldn’t smoke in public places, and basically pot would be put in the same class as alcohol. Soon voters will decide if they will weed out the law, or bring in the bud. Source KMIR

Calif. Cuts Number of Uninsured Children by More than Half

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California has made the biggest recent gains in the country in getting children signed up for health

insurance, according to a new report. Researchers at the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families found the Golden State cut its number of

uninsured children by 55 percent between 2013 and 2015, just after the Affordable Care Act went into effect. Mayra Alvarez, president of the Children’s Partnership

credits the state’s decision to fully implement the ACA, expanding Medi-Cal and creating a state marketplace, Covered California, that makes it easy to sign up. “As a one-stop shopping center, families are notified about what programs for which they or their children may qualify, both private plans, and public programs like Medi-Cal, making the process easier, but also helping secure coverage for more children that are eligible,” she explained. The report said 97 percent of California’s nine million children now have health insurance, which beats the national average by almost two percentage points. California’s numbers will look even better by next year, because the state began allowing undocumented

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Open enrollment has begun, but some Washingtonians could have a hard time choosing an insurance plan because health-coverage terminology is widely misunderstood. A survey conducted on behalf of Group Health found that, for instance, more than 40 percent of respondents couldn’t identify the proper definition of a deductible, which is a fixed amount of money paid before your health insurance begins to pay. Melinda Hews, executive director of the Health Insurance Exchanges at Group Health, said another important concept is the cost of premiums, or the amount paid for plans on a monthly basis, and that that can help unlock what kind of coverage

is best for a consumer. “There’s a general rule of thumb that we like to follow that the lower your monthly premium, the likelihood that your cost shares at the time of service are higher,” she explained. “So there’s this balance between what you pay every month versus what you pay when you seek service.” Less than half of respondents to the survey understood copays, which is the flat fee usually paid at the time a person receives a particular health service. Co-insurance was the least understood. It is the share of the total cost a patient pays for a health service. Hews said people are suffering from fatigue over health coverage because of the barrage of rhetoric involving the Affordable Care Act, and

that people can sometimes feel overwhelmed about decisions when it comes to choosing a plan. But she said people can save money if they take the time to choose the plan that works best for them and their families, and that doesn’t necessarily mean the plan with the cheapest premiums. “I think it’s worth taking the time to see if it might be a better value for you, given your use of health-care services, to buy a silver plan,” she said. “Slightly more money every month, but you get potentially better cost-sharing support from the federal government, as well as the premium tax credit.” Washingtonians can find health plans at WAhealthplanfinder.org. Folks need to apply by December 15th to get coverage starting in January.

children to enroll in MediCal this past May. So far, parents have signed up more than 135,000 children. Joan Alker, executive director of the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, said polls show most Americans are not aware of the success of these programs. “About half of Americans thought the number of uninsured children was actually increasing,” she said. “Only 28 percent were aware that the number has actually gone down. So, this is a success that we’ve had as a country, it’s not well known, and it’s something we can all feel good about.” The report said California still has more than 300,000 uninsured children, which is the second largest number in the country, behind Texas.

New CIF Rule Means Some Local Teams May Miss Playoffs By Julie Buehler Our local high school football teams wrapped up their regular season Friday night and with the new playoff rules adopted for this year, only 2 teams are guaranteed playoff bids while the rest of our valley teams have to wait until Sunday morning to discover their post season plans. The Rancho Mirage Rattlers, in only their third year of varsity action-- only 2 years removed from a 1-9 season, went unbeaten in league play and took home their first-ever league title behind a dominating win over Desert Hot Springs Friday night. Ranked 2nd in their division going into that game, the Rattlers are a very talented squad and should make a deep playoff run. Do not be surprised if they’re playing beyond Thanksgiving-a distinction offered to only CIF title contenders. In the DVL-- the La Quinta Blackhawks went undefeated in league play and head into Division 5 playoffs with a great shot at a CIF title as well. Benji Cordova and Justin Anderson continue to be

the offensive leaders of this team -- they combined for 6 scores Friday night against Cathedral City and Sunday morning we’ll find out who their first round opponent is. Those are the only 2 local teams confirmed in the playoffs. Under the new CIF rules, only league winners are guaranteed spots. But 3 other squads have a really good shot at getting in the tournament in their respective divisions. But they won’t know for sure until Sunday morning, after their season results are dropped into a mathematical equation that will spit out a division rankings. As long as they’re in the top 16-- they’re in. From the start of the season, the Mighty Arabs players told us they were on a mission to change the culture of CV High football. A 7-3 record will do just that. But will it be enough to make the playoffs? They beat Palm Desert for the first time in 17 years, won both rivalry games against Indio and Desert Mirage and finished third in the league. They were last ranked 13th in the CIF coach’s poll.

The defending DVL champs, Palm Springs, were off this week and used that time to induct a new group of former athletes into their Hall of Fame. The football team finished 2nd in the league, last year that would have delivered a playoff berth, but this year it only offers priority in Division 4. They’re ranked 6th in the coaches poll in that division, so the idea that they’d fall out of the Top 16 based on the CIF computer rankings is tough to imagine.

Perhaps no team is caught in the cross hairs of this new CIF rule quite like Shadow Hills. Their first year in the DVL, the Knights should be very proud of their 6-4 season and 3rd place finish in the league and last year, that 3rd place finish would ave guaranteed a playoff bid. But not this year. They needed a convincing win over Xavier Prep to get off the bubble in Division 10 and into the playoffs. They lost 42-23

attitude or opinion. Project 180: Turning Lives Around

By Angela Monroe, Anchor / Reporter INDIO -- A new program involving local high school students is trying to help youth succeed. The priority is to help students that may be at-risk because of grades, poverty or other issues at home. The program is giving

teenagers aged 15 to 18 in local continuation schools an opportunity to learn life skills, and the law. California Desert Trial Academy and its founder, KMIR Legal Analyst John Patrick Dolan, started the program called Project 180. A 180 is defined as a complete reversal in

GEMINI It’s time to reach out to those both near and far, communicating with them your recent thoughts, hopes, plans and goals. You’re to be like a great wind that blows all the amber leaves from the trees and on that day everyone knows winter is near. You are to communicate in such a way that people’s lives change in an instant. Are you traveling somewhere soon?

CANCER

VIRGO Perhaps you’re feeling a bit wounded. There’s something that must be understood at the heart of the matter, meaning within your heart. Are you working too hard, thinking too much or holding ancient self- criticism? Recognize those in your world you respect, honor and look up to. Make a list. Realize we love those we are most like. This revelation allows you a true reflection of self. You are they.

LIBRA You’ve had many life experiences; many relationships, hardships, abandonment, changes and transformations. At times, these can feel life threatening. However, as you reflect on them, you see how each has prepared and strengthened you for who you are now. A goodness, an understanding of values, a recognition of your abilities emerge. Like Venus (Libra’s ruler)m rising at sunset to herald the night, you have become the bright and shining Evening Star.

SCORPIO During Scorpio Sun it’s good to assess what you value, who you value and why. This is most important because in all Mystery Schools one enters their studies with the axiom, “Know Thyself.” The stars and planets reach down to us daily, helping us to know and understand ourselves. Some of the signs are able to comprehend this more easily (Scorpio and Pisces). Actually, Jupiter has made you into a bit of a Pisces lately!

community needs, you’ll find there’s a great need only you can fulfill. Have the intention to encourage and value others. Soon you will go into silence.

CAPRICORN The holiday season is about to begin. After helping those in need, after sudden events pushed you into unexpected travel, unexpected sadness, you may want a bit of solitude. Feeling a bit overwhelmed with the world you remain behind veils of privacy and protection. This is good and the appropriate choice especially for the family. And then, you step out into the world in service. Asking always, what is best for your heart to do?

You meet a loved one in the middle. The work you will do illuminates others. It’s seen and recognized. AQUARIUS An event places you in different surroundings. You find you must learn new ways of being. Perhaps a new (old) career emerges, travel takes precedence, rest too - all part of your next developmental stage. Is there a wound about something in form disappearing, dissolving into the great abyss of change? Having less prepares you for more opportunities, later, more happiness. When you can again feel at home.

Casino: Woman shown $43M jackpot actually owed $2.25 By KMIR News Staff NEW YORK - A woman who appeared to win a lifechanging $42.9 million jackpot at a New York City casino is threatening to sue after being told the big payout she was shown was simply the result of a malfunction. Katrina Bookman was playing the penny slot machine at Resorts World Casino in August when it displayed a message that read, “Printing Cash Ticket. $42,949,642.76.” She even took a selfie next to the screen to celebrate. But when Bookman tried to collect, the casino told her it was all a big mistake and she was only owed the $2.25 balance she had on the machine. “Machine malfunctions are rare, and we would like to extend our apologies to Ms. Bookman for any inconvenience this may have caused,” the casino said in a statement The New York State Gaming Commission investigated and said the

bogus payout was “clearly a display malfunction.” The machine was taken out of service, repaired and put back a day later, the commission said. The machine’s maximum payout is $6,500. Resorts World tells The Associated Press that the Gaming Commission told it the casino cannot legally pay Bookman even that amount because a malfunction voids all plays under state law. However, the Gaming Commission told the AP that there are no rules barring Resorts World from offering Bookman money to resolve the situation, even though she didn’t win anything. Resorts World said Bookman printed out a voucher ticket to receive her $2.25 balance on the machine, but her lawyer disputes that. Alan Ripka sent a letter to the casino demanding it resolve what he describes as “a terrible situation.” The casino responded that the

E N T E RTA I N M E N T ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ Rocks the Pantages BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

Photo by Joan Marcus While Hedwig began life behind the Berlin Wall in East Germany, the Tony Award winning rock musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” started out as a risque cabaret act off Broadway in 1998. In 2001, the off Broadway show morphed into a cult film before transitioning into a smash hit on the Great White Way in 2014 starring Neil Patrick Harris as Hedwig. Darren Criss (TVs “Glee”) took on the gender-bending role after Harris and now he, and the New York cast have arrived at the Hollywood Pantages for a four-week engagement. The book by John Cameron Mitchell, with music and lyrics by Stephen Trask, introduces us to an East Berlin chanteuse named Hedwig, who began life as Hansel behind the impenetrable Berlin Wall. Life was tough; His or her mother was undemonstrative and Hansel was eager to start life over somewhere else. We learn all of this as Criss, in high heels and even higher hair, regales us with the ups and downs of her life though comedic banter and song. She is surrounded

on stage by her East German band, the Angry Inch, performed by Justin Craig — music director, director, guitar, keyboards, Matt Duncan— bass, guitar, keyboards, Tim Mislock— guitar and Peter Yanowitz on drums. All four Inches also provide vocals. Rounding out the onstage cast is Lena Hall as Hedwig’s devoted husband Yitzhak, who also sings. Both Hall and Neil Patrick Harris received a Tony, and the show garnered a Tony for Best Revival. On stage at the Pantages Criss is a boundless fountain of energy as he sings, flounces and bounces non-stop for one hour and 40 minutes— without an intermission. His performance is amazing and brought the opening-night audience to their collective feet at the end of the show. “Cafe Society,” written and directed by Woody Allen, is a bittersweet romantic comedy starring Jesse Eisenberg in a role that would have been played by Allen in his younger days. Jesse is the New York nephew of an influential Hollywood agent (Steve Carell). Out of the blue, Carell receives a call from his sister asking him to help her son Bobby find a job in Tinseltown. Eventually, Bobby is hired by his uncle and falls in love with his uncle’s secretary (Kristen Stewart). As in all Allen films, the road to romance is a bumpy route. Sometimes Bobby returns to New York where he is swept up into high-society nightlife. Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Corey Stoll and Jeannie Berlin round out the cast list. Special features include a photo gallery, and a featurette entitled: “On The Red Carpet.” From Lionsgate, the film is rated PG-13 for some violence, a drug reference, suggestive material and smoking.

Class passengers. Everyone was elegantly attired, including some men in black tie and thankfully, for a change, not a flip-flop or cut off jeans were anywhere to be seen. Escorted to my seat by a beautiful young hostess wearing a uniform from the 1970s, I was delighted to see that a table sat between

four seats – two on each side – offering a convenience of yesteryear. Kicking off the food service, a menu of libations was distributed which listed 18 choices - from sparkling water and Coca Cola to premium wines, champagne, and specialty drinks such as Mile High Mai Tai and Pam Am Punch made with fresh pineapple juice, sour mix, blue curacao liqueur, white rum, and

vodka. Its description ends with “Puts a Puka Puka in your step! Indeed, a few of those, you’ll really be flying high. Although the dinner recreated authentic food, the taste was far from what we use to call airplane food, which now actually consists of a bag of nuts and a beverage. A crisp tossed salad with prawns was the starter, followed by a delicious, tender Beef Wellington offered as one of the entrees. During the meal service, with songs from the Great American Songbook piped in, we were entertained with several fashion shows in

By Brian Lowry Marvel braves a stumble with each dip into its grab bag of second-tier, lessrecognizable characters. But it won’t come with “Doctor Strange,” an extremely entertaining and sure-footed adaptation that manages to conjure more than enough magic to easily pass its spell check. Much of that has to do with a splendid cast, led by Benedict Cumberbatch. Having top-flight actors -- including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton and Mads Mikkelsen -- is especially helpful with this enterprise. That’s because some of the mysticalmumbo-jumbo dialogue -- as in, “Dormammu dwells in the dark dimension” -- could sound stilted or silly tripping off less talented tongues. Largely faithful to the comics, the film tells a straightforward origin story -- in hindsight, an area where Marvel has generally excelled. The first “Iron Man,” for example, is far more satisfying than either of its sequels. A brilliant neurosurgeon, Dr. Stephen Strange has his million-dollar hands mangled

in a terrible car accident. (The closing credits might elicit the biggest laugh with a disclaimer warning about the dangers of distracted driving.) Desperate to be restored, Strange begins exploring alternative means of healing, a search that ultimately leads him to Nepal, a hidden retreat and a bald sage known as the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton, in gloriousweirdness mode). Aided by her chief lieutenant Mordo (Ejiofor), they train him in the mystic arts. Those skills will soon by needed. A former acolyte (Mikkelsen) has gone rogue and is on the loose, determined along with his minions to release the aforementioned Dormammu, a magical creature who will bring the requisite death and destruction to Earth. The plot builds toward an inevitable showdown that, in traditional Marvel fashion, is probably the weakest part of the movie. Fortunately, director Scott Derrickson (who also collaborated on the script) ensures that it’s great fun getting to that point, with the landscape-bending spells and battle making especially good use of the 3D effects,

producing all kinds of dazzling visuals; and composer Michael Giacchino delivering one of his best scores. In some respects, “Doctor Strange” owes a debt to the Harry Potter movies, which have laid the groundwork for sorcerous combat. Those images, it’s worth noting, might also make the movie scarier for kids than most prior Marvel offerings. It’s facile to say that Cumberbatch -- classically trained, dashing actor on the brink of superstardom -- was born to play a superhero. But it’s hard to think of anyone who could have invested the role with all the necessary qualities with such seeming effortlessness. And yes, hang around for the Easter eggs, which help cement the good doctor’s place in Marvel’s larger cinematic universe. Swinton is equally terrific, as what amounts to Strange’s Mr. Miyagi. If there’s an odd woman out here, it’s Rachel McAdams, playing a medical colleague and one-time lover, with the script laboring to afford her screen time. “Forget everything you think

which the hostesses turned into models and strutted through the different cabins wearing the uniforms that were standard from decade to decade. After a while, I have to admit that looking through the window with a fluffy cloud-filled sky painted on the outside, I began to feel like I was actually on a plane sans the constant roar of the engines, which, by the way, is available on request. Disney and Marvel Studios premiered the first trailer for its upcoming film, “Doctor Strange,” on Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday night. you know,” the Ancient One tells Strange upon his arrival. But in fact, the opposite is true: Having successfully branched out with the likes of “Ant-Man,” Marvel has this genre down to a solid formula. And that should

play well not only with fans, but even those who might have to consult a comic book to master spelling “Dormammu.” “Dr. Strange” opens in the U.S. on November 4. It’s rated PG-13. Source KMIR/CNN www.desertstarweekly.com

Artist: Two Door Cinema Club Title: Gameshow (Glassnote Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Strokes, Duran Duran, Prince Tell me more: It has been four years since the release

of Northern Irish troupe Two Door Cinema Club’s incredible sophomore effort “Beacon.” That album, like the band’s 2010 debut “Tourist History,” was a snappy indie rock-styled affair filled with rapid-fire guitar lines and infectious choruses to match. Two Door Cinema Club’s highly-anticipated third album “Gameshow” delivers that sound on the inviting lead-off track “Are We Ready (Wreck)” and nowhere else. The majority of tracks on the disc recall the dance pop and electro funk of the ‘80s (think Chic or Prince) as well as recent dance-minded discs from Duran Duran and Neon Trees. Despite TDCC’s seemingly dramatic departure, there is plenty to celebrate on this terrific return. The title track is a swirling and driving synth pop delight; “Fever” is a lush and intoxicating dance floor foray featuring Alex Trimble’s falsetto vocals and a propulsive bass line. “Invincible” is a lovely neo-soul ballad likewise carved out of the ‘80s pop era, with little or no guitar until Sam Halliday comes in with a big solo for the track’s finale. Fans of sophisticated pop (notably David Bowie and Prince) will love the lush “Good Morning,” featuring an undeniable groove and artistic touches. Two Door Cinema Club is scheduled to perform at the Shrine Auditorium on Nov. 30, and at Harrah’s Resort Southern California in Valley Center, CA on Dec. 3, 2016. Information:

Now beloved hits such as the group’s “Needles & Pins” and “Love Potion Number Nine” are gathered on “The Very Best of the Searchers.” Many of the band’s early singles were covers of American hits, including “Sweets for my Sweet,” “Sugar and Spice” and “When You Walk in the Room,” with the Searchers layering their distinctive vocal harmonies on arrangements to make the songs their own. National Parks, A Force Of Nature By Pamela Price Let’s be clear: A stunning new book called Wild America does not deal with the fallout from the Presidential election. The focus rather is on the land, specifically the formation of our nation’s National Part Service in 1916. This was thanks to the vision of many, including John Muir, who said, “thousands of tired, nerveshaken over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home: that wilderness is a necessity; and mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of time and irrigating rivers but as fountains of life.” That vision, stated in 1901 is as relevant now as it was then, especially after this year’s contentious politics. Seeking the peace and beauty of 21 National Parks and ‘other protected areas is the journey upon which you will embark when perusing this 95 page visual odyssey of America’s scenic magnificence

from Sequoia & Kings Canyon and Yosemite in California to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (where Thomas Jefferson spent some down time while “contemplating the wonders of nature.”) This was brought to my attention by my ten-year old grandson who experienced, to a certain extent, Thomas Jefferson’s feelings, inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area was once inhabited by around “400 hillbilly families who were ‘almost completely cut off from the current of American life’. Ironically an estimated 50 million people live within a day’s drive away. It took the foresight of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s ‘ New Deal Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) public works relief program, Putting America’s unemployed to work within the Shenandoah, giving hope and purpose to 1,000 boys and young men who worked here. Maybe America’s new leadership will take a serious step backwards,

Photo by Arthur T. Lechtman for a change and consider the Shenandoah’s success in putting Americans back to work with the mission of preserving our national heritage. In just a few pages’ Wild America, a personal celebration of the National Parks by David Muench & Roly Smith published by www.interlinkbooks.com will

take you on a rare guided tour revealing more about America’s mesmerizing National Park history through photography that can be described only as majestic. According to Arthur Lechtman who took this book’s advice to heart, creating a one-week itinerary. “ You capture the moment and

remarkable images with just four National park destinations starting in Washington with Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens and work your way to Mount Hood Wilderness in the Cascades and Crater Lake in Oregon. Thank the authors of Wild America for motivating the journey,” he said.

of Jet Support Services Inc. Robert Book, and his wife Amy; Chairman and CEO of The Kraft Group and owner of the New England Patriots Robert Kraft; GUESS Founders Maurice and Paul Marciano; and Chairman and CEO of Wasserman Media Group Casey Wasserman and his wife, movie music supervisor, Laura. Celebrity guests in attendance included Julie Bowen, Gerard Butler, Robert De Niro, Joanna Krupa and Arnold Schwarzenegger. “This year marks a full decade that Cheryl and I have had the honor of chairing this fantastic event, and we are humbled by and grateful for the outpouring of support it receives year after year,” said Mr. Saban. “We are gratified to see that the FIDF’s important mission – to provide wellbeing and educational programs for the heroic men and women of the IDF – continues to resonate with the Los Angeles community.” Presiding as the evening’s master of ceremonies was Israeli actress and model Moran Atias. The event featured special performances by David Foster & Friends, TV-stars Laura

Bretan and Jordan Smith, and Jason McGee and The Choir. The gala featured a moving speech from Master Sgt. (Res.) Allison Bressand, a Lone Soldier – one who enlists in the IDF without any immediate family in Israel. Bressand served as a squad commander in the Israel Border Police and was responsible for stopping a terror attack last year. Originally from France, she moved to Israel to fulfill her late father’s dream of returning to the Jewish homeland. Bressand’s mother, who had not seen her daughter for nearly a year, was flown into Los Angeles from France by FIDF and surprised Allison onstage in an emotional reunion. The event also featured speeches from wounded Israeli soldiers Sgt. Ohad Benyichai, an Israeli commando who suffered a severe head wound during the infamous 2014 battle in Gaza’s Shejaiya neighborhood, and Israeli hero Master Sgt. (Res.) Omri Michaeli, who joined his special operations reserves unit immediately after returning from a trip abroad for Operation Protective Edge. During this important operation, he suffered

a gunshot wound and was led to the hospital wrapped in the Israeli flag, inadvertently becoming a national symbol. The top donation of the event was $6 million from Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, founder and president of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, who has contributed an excess of $30 million to FIDF. “The commitment of Israel’s soldiers to protecting their country and her citizens is truly inspiring and remarkable,” said Eckstein. “It is incumbent upon us to stand by these brave soldiers and support them in whatever way we can, so they know how deep our commitment is to their wellbeing and their futures.” Other distinguished guests included FIDF Western Region Founder and Chairman Emeritus Leo David; FIDF National President Peter Weintraub; FIDF National Board Member and Western Region President Tony Rubin and his wife, Linda; FIDF National Chairman Emeritus Nily Falic; FIDF National Director and CEO Maj. Gen. (Res.) Meir KlifiAmir; and FIDF Western Region Executive Director Miri Nash.

Massive recall of exploding Samsung washing machines By Desert Star Staff After the Samsung toploader washing machine was found to explode when operating at high speed, the company has recalled 2.8 million washers – just a month after having to recall its Galaxy 7 Note smartphone prone to catching on fire. Complaints started emerging of exploding Samsung washers a year ago, but the Consumer Product Safety Commission only announced on Friday that Samsung was issuing a recall for 2.8 million machines. CPSC received 733 complaints and said that nine people were reported injured from the toploaders – including a broken jaw, injured shoulder, and a fall.“We’re talking about ... a very serious hazard of the top of these washing machines completely blowing off,” CPSC chairman Elliot Kaye told ABC News. “It is a lot of reports.” One woman was hit after

the lid of her machine became airborne during its final spin cycle and hit her so hard she ended up in a cabinet sustaining blows to her jaw and head and bruising to her hip, according to ABC News. Two women filed a class action lawsuit in Indiana federal court against Samsung in March. Indiana resident Suzann Moore and Texas resident Michelle Soto Fielder said “Samsung Electronics America Inc. exposed them to unreasonable harm and unjustly received their money by selling them brand-new washing machines that exploded violently in their homes just a few years later, causing significant damage,” according to Law360. Kaye told ABC the problem was a design failure where the lids of the units weren’t “secured enough…the top just completely blows off.” In its recall notice issued, CPSC said the 733

Samsung washing machines are seen as an employee inspects refrigerators at a Samsung display store in Johannesburg. © Siphiwe Sibeko / Reuters complaints it had received were of washers experiencing “excessive vibration or the top detaching from the washing machine chassis.” The South Korean company has issued a recall on 34 different models of the top-loader that were sold after March 2011. Purchasers of

2.8 million machines can get the unit repaired for free in their home, get a rebate to purchase any new machine, or receive a full refund.Samsung Electronics is still trying to figure out why its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones were catching fire, the company said on Thursday. In October

the world’s largest maker of smartphones, memory chips and TVs stopped production on the Galaxy Note 7 series, after its batteries started catching fire. Some 2.5 million phones were recalled, wiping out Samsung’s mobile profit in the last quarter of 2016.

Border Patrol Discovers Narcotics Hidden in Car Muffler

Agents found 17 bundles of methamphetamine stuffed inside this car’s muffler. By Desert Star Staff SALTON CITY, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents from the Indio Station assigned to the Highway 86 checkpoint arrested a man suspected of smuggling

drugs inside his car’s exhaust system on Wednesday. The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m., when a 26-year-old man approached the Border Patrol checkpoint in a black

2004 Honda coupe. During primary inspection, the man stated that he was a United States citizen and presented a partially torn birth certificate. The agent referred the driver to secondary

for further inspection. During the inspection, a Border Patrol detection canine team alerted to the vehicle. Agents conducted a thorough inspection of the vehicle and discovered

National Adoption Month: Love is Love, Study Says By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A new study finds that adopted children of samesex couples experience no differences from peers being raised by households with a male and a female. Rachel Farr, a developmental psychologist and psychology professor at the University of Kentucky, studied nearly 100 families made up of a mix of two men, two women and couples of the opposite sex. After ten years of evaluating them, she reached one conclusion. “Parent sexual orientation,

the family structure, is not emerging as anything that’s having any sort of lasting effects,” she said. “Rather, it’s the processes going on within the family, the quality of family relationships, or parenting, that seem much more important.” Earlier this year, a federal judge ruled that banning same-sex couples from adopting children is unconstitutional, making gay adoption legal in all 50 states. It’s been legal in California since 2003. In her report, Farr also concluded that, overall, children had fewer behavior problems

over time when parents were less stressed and in more satisfying relationships. According to the U.S. Census, there are 594,000 same-sex couple households in the country, and 115,000 of them reported having children. Farr said while laws are catching up with society, research such as hers can aid in setting the policies of individual agencies and perceptions of birth mothers and fathers. “Individual adoption agencies might even have different policies that in some ways may be either November 9, 2016

discriminatory or just not as welcoming, and I think that is an area where we still need more research and more room

anomalies in the car’s exhaust system. Consequently, the agents discovered 17 bundles of methamphetamine stuffed inside the muffler. “Often, when our agents are conducting immigration inspections, they uncover other crimes,” said David S. Kim, Assistant Chief Patrol Agent. “On this occasion, an alert agent and a canine detection team worked together and arrested a methamphetamine smuggler.” The narcotics had a combined weight of 13.28 pounds with an estimated street value of $42,500. The man, the vehicle, and the narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation. In fiscal year 2017, El Centro Sector has seized more than 84.03 pounds of cocaine.

Upholding death row inmates’ “suicide burden”

By Desert Star Staff Chief United States District Judge for the Middle District of Alabama, W. Keith Watkins, has big-time beef with the medical profession. According to Judge Watkins, “modern medicine has orphaned Hippocrates and his Oath, in the name of patient self-determination and choice.” The entire medical community, Watkins decries, is violating the Hippocratic Oath by, “unleashing the genies of physician-assisted suicide, medical marijuana, drug and alcohol use.” But, worst of all, according to Watkins, they have been “countenancing medical procedures that the original [Hippocrates] Oath prohibited. For instance, the oldest version of the Oath says, ‘I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy.’ Today, that provision is history, aborted by modern medical ethicists.” Now, maybe you’re thinking, Judge Watkins must have been overheard saying these things at a private dinner. Or, maybe, he was caught on a hot mic at a gala after supping at the local country club? Perhaps, you know, Billy Bush was there? Nope. Watkins’ fire and brimstone attack is part of a 29-page federal court opinion

granting a motion for summary judgment filed by lawyers for the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC); ADOC was being sued by five death row inmates in Alabama who claim their impending executions by lethal injection with the controversial drug midazolam will cause them excruciating pain in violation of the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. The five condemned men in question (and all of Alabama’s death row population) have plenty of reason to fear a torturous end because: (1) Alabama’s last execution may have burned a man alive; (2) Alabama tilts the advantage in executions in favor of prosecutors; and (3) death row inmates in Alabama are human guinea pigs. In one particularly dyspeptic section of Judge Watkins’ sui generis opinion titled, “Alternative Method Evidence: Hippocrates and Hypocrites,” Watkins accuses doctors, nurses, ethicists, and everyone else involved in medicine, of standing “by passively as sodium thiopental and pentobarbital were ripped from [the] medical bag of compassionate pain management by a tiny cadre of death penalty abolitionists.” By dizzying turns of circular and impenetrable right-

wing logic, Judge Watkins’ opinion argues, it is primarily because of the medical community’s malfeasance that Alabama death row inmates can’t satisfy, “the burden of proving a known and available alternative method of execution that significantly reduces the risk of substantial pain in execution,” also known as “the ‘suicide burden’.” “Suicide burden,” you ask? Yes, indeed. But, when it comes to this abomination of jurisprudence, you can’t blame Judge Watkins (and yes, still no Billy Bush sightings here); when it comes to what’s been called disgustingly, for shorthand, the “suicide burden,” point the needle straight at Supreme Court Justice Samuel J. Alito instead. It is Alito’s opinion in the Supreme Court’s fractured five-to-four decision in Glossip v. Gloss, 135 S. Ct. 2726, 2737 (2015), that thrust the unconscionable, unethical, and I respectfully submit, unconstitutional burden -- upon death row inmates challenging the method of their execution -- to establish the existence of a known and available alternative method that is, “feasible, readily implemented, and in fact significantly reduce[s] a substantial risk of severe pain.”

I am not alone. As reported in sciencedaily.com: “Court orders demanding death row inmates to provide ‘specific, detailed and concrete alternatives,’ to a state’s lethal injection protocol compel those inmates to produce evidence that is impossible to obtain without forcing physicians and other clinicians to violate their medical ethics, according to Harvard bioethicists and legal experts. Such orders, therefore, the experts argue, pose an insurmountable hurdle for inmates seeking alternative methods of execution.” So, where does Judge Watkins’ opinion, issued on Halloween (which must have thrilled all of the ghouls) leave 74-year-old Tommy Arthur, scheduled to die by lethal injection on November 3, in the hellhole of Holman Prison, in Atmore, Alabama? The answer is dismal. But, just as gloomy and even harder to fathom is, where does it leave all compassionate, justice-loving Americans who reject torture, who believe in science, the Constitution, and, also, that the medical community is not some nefarious justicethwarting-conglomerate on a mission to harm us all?

CV Rep’s “Annapurna” travels the bumpy road of love, marriage, and more

Photos by Jim Cox. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The bumpy road of love, marriage, and everything else in between, is often filled with potholes we call life passages. There are precious few rose gardens out there, promised or not, and some aren’t even worth taking care of. But Hope springs eternal. Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre (CVREP) kicks off their 8th season with the production “Annapurna”, written by Sharr White and nicely directed by founding Artistic Director Ron Celona. In keeping with Celona’s promise to bring plays that address the 2016/17 season theme of “Love. Marriage, and Life Changing Events”, “Annapurna” is a bittersweet story of former married partners meeting after twenty years.

Emma (Anna Nicholas) tracks down her former alcoholic, poet/writer husband Ulysses (Eric Charles Jorgenson), to a trailer park in the middle of rural mountain high Colorado for a final reckoning. There are questions, deep hurts, and unresolved issues that force Emma to confront Ulysses after all these years. The play begins with the disheveled, mountain man-like bearded Ulysses getting ready to prepare breakfast in his mancave like digs, when Emma, his long divorced ex walks in the front door of his small, grungy trailer with two suitcases. He is not happy to see her despite a twenty-year absence. And she’s wondering if she made the right decision to confront him now that she sees him and his condition. For starters, he’s dying of emphysema and has an oxygen tube in his nose and is in a weakened, listless

condition. But, he hasn’t lost his ability to yell and shout at her like in the old days. Emma doesn’t push back against Ulysses’ boorish and bullying behavior. She appears calm and under control, going so far as to say this place needs a good scrub, and then begins to clean up. Then she opens up and tells Ulysses that she has permanently left her home and their twenty year-old son Sam (who is never seen only referred to) in order to alert Ulysses that Sam is on his way here to see his father after discovering a cache of letters that Ulysses had been sending to him via Emma’s mother over the last 10 years. The ‘backstory’ is a bit fuzzy and melodramatic as to what really happened to Sam when Ulysses, in one of his alcoholic blackouts may have caused the deafness in one of Sam’s ears. This is one of the reasons why Emma wants to confront her ex. Does he remember

striking his five year-old son? What happened? Ulysses says he has no recollection of anything that far back. He honestly can’t remember. The narrative of White’s play is not its strongest asset. It’s the performances of the actors that win the day. There is good onstage chemistry between Jorgenson and Nicholas, and both are always in the moment. I won’t go so far as saying that some in the audience will find relevancy in the play’s subject matter, but parents in the audience might smile a bit as to the tug of war that goes on in all marriages, and especially where children are concerned when one parent is absent from the home. There is light banter between Ulysses and Emma once the thaw begins. Perhaps, some vocal modulation between Jorgenson and Nicholas might better blunt the effect of yelling at each other all the time

which becomes somewhat offputting. At times, less is better. The technical credits at CV REP are always top tier. Resident Scenic Design wizard and multiple DTL award winner Jimmy Cuomo never disappoints. His grungy trailer home is terrific, as is the lighting design by Moira Wilkie Whitaker (also a recent Desert Theatre League (DTL) award winner, Costumes by Aalsa Lee, and sound design by Cricket S. Myers, Production Manager and Associate Set designer Doug Morris and Sound Tech by Karen Goodwin complete the creative team. The 90 minute play is performed without an intermission. Call the box office for reservations and ticket information at 760-296-2966. “Annapurna” performs at CV Repertory Theatre, Rancho Mirage through November 20, 2016.
